  1. Thank you.

  2. In Jesus' name we pray.

  3. In those days, Mary arose and went with haste to the hill country, to a town in Judah, and she entered the house of Zechariah and greeted Elizabeth.

  4. And when Elizabeth heard the greeting of Mary, the baby leapt in her womb.

  5. And Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit, and she exclaimed with a loud cry,

  6. Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb.

  7. And why is this granted to me, that the mother of my Lord should come to me?

  8. For behold, when the sound of your greeting came to my ears, the baby in my womb leapt for joy.

  9. And blessed is she who believed that there would be a fulfillment of what was spoken to her from the Lord.

  10. And Mary said,

  11. My soul magnifies the Lord, and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior.

  12. For he has looked on the humble estate of his servant.

  13. For behold, from now on all generations will call me blessed.

  14. For he who is mighty has done great things for me.

  15. And holy is his name.

  16. And his mercy is for those who fear him from generation to generation.

  17. He has shown strength with his arm.

  18. He has scattered the proud in the thoughts of their hearts.

  19. He has brought down the mighty from their thrones.

  20. And exalted those of humble estate.

  21. He has filled the hungry with good things.

  22. And the rich he has sent away empty.

  23. He has helped his servant Israel in remembrance of his mercy.

  24. As he spoke to our fathers, to Abraham, and to his offspring forever.

  25. And Mary remained with her about three months and returned to her home.

  26. Now the time came for Elizabeth to give birth.

  27. And she bore a son.

  28. And her neighbors and relatives heard that the Lord had shown great mercy to her.

  29. And they rejoiced with her.

  30. And on the eighth day they came to circumcise the child.

  31. And they would have called him Zechariah after his father.

  32. But his mother answered, No, he shall be called John.

  33. And they said to her, None of your relatives is called by this name.

  34. And they made signs to his father inquiring what he wanted him to be called.

  35. And he asked for a writing tablet and wrote, His name is John.

  36. And they all wondered.

  37. And immediately his mouth was opened.

  38. And his tongue loosed.

  39. And he spoke, Blessing God.

  40. And fear came on all their neighbors.

  41. And all these things were talked about through all the hill country of Judea.

  42. And all who heard them laid them up in their hearts, saying,

  43. What then will this child be?

  44. For the hand of the Lord was with him.

  45. And his father Zechariah was filled with the Holy Spirit and prophesied, saying,

  46. Blessed be the Lord God of Israel, for he has visited and redeemed his people,

  47. and has raised up a horn of salvation for us in the house of his servant David,

  48. as he spoke by the mouth of his holy prophets from of old,

  49. that we should be saved from our enemies and from the hand of all who hate us,

  50. to show the mercy promised to our fathers, and to remember his holy covenant,

  51. the oath that he swore to our father Abraham,

  52. to grant us that we, being delivered from the hand of our enemies,

  53. might serve him without fear in holiness and righteousness before him all our days.

  54. And you, child, will be called the prophet of the Most High,

  55. for you will go before the Lord to prepare his ways,

  56. to give knowledge of salvation to his people in the forgiveness of their sins,

  57. because of the tender mercy of our God,

  58. whereby the sunrise shall visit us from on high,

  59. to give light to those who sit in darkness and in the shadow of death,

  60. to guide our feet into the way of peace.

  61. The child grew and became strong in spirit.

  62. He was in the wilderness until the day of his public appearance to Israel.

  63. This is the word of the Lord.

  64. One of my favorite children's books is entitled The Carrot Seed.

  65. If any of you have read it, if some of you have kids,

  66. it goes like this, it's a very short book,

  67. it says,

  68. A little boy planted a carrot seed.

  69. His mother said,

  70. I'm afraid it won't come up.

  71. His father said,

  72. I'm afraid it won't come up.

  73. And his big brother said,

  74. It won't come up.

  75. Every day the little boy pulled up the weeds around the seed

  76. and sprinkled the ground with water.

  77. But nothing came up.

  78. And nothing came up.

  79. Everyone kept saying it wouldn't come up.

  80. But he still pulled up the weeds around it every day

  81. and sprinkled the ground with water.

  82. And then,

  83. one day,

  84. a carrot came up.

  85. Just as the little boy had known it would.

  86. It's a simple story about childlike faith.

  87. About perseverance.

  88. I don't know if the author is Christian,

  89. but it's really something that should characterize the Christian life.

  90. Childlike faith.

  91. Perseverance.

  92. Because we are called as God's people to live by faith.

  93. And not by sight.

  94. And this can be difficult,

  95. especially when what we see around us don't match up with what we believe.

  96. Yet,

  97. even when we are surrounded by naysayers,

  98. those who keep the faith

  99. will be rewarded

  100. and proven right

  101. in the end.

  102. And this passage serves to provide evidence of that.

  103. Assurance of the fact that those who humbly trust in the Lord

  104. will rejoice in the end for God's mercy.

  105. That those who humbly trust in the Lord

  106. will rejoice in the end for God's mercy.

  107. And so the first part we see in verses 39 to 56,

  108. Mary's faith and rejoicing.

  109. And in the second part we see

  110. Zechariah's faith and rejoicing.

  111. And we saw last week that

  112. Gabriel, the angel,

  113. gave announcements to Elizabeth and Mary.

  114. And after hearing from Gabriel

  115. that Elizabeth,

  116. her formerly barren relative,

  117. is now pregnant

  118. and that this is the sign for Mary

  119. that she will bear a son as a virgin

  120. named Jesus.

  121. Mary departs immediately to visit Elizabeth.

  122. It says in verses 39 to 40,

  123. follow along with me,

  124. In those days Mary arose

  125. and went with haste into the hill country

  126. to a town in Judah.

  127. And she entered the house of Zechariah

  128. and greeted Elizabeth.

  129. So her hasty departure,

  130. so she's not hesitating,

  131. she's not delaying,

  132. she goes immediately

  133. because she believes the word of the Lord

  134. and this is her response of obedience

  135. to God's announcement through his angel.

  136. And as she departs for Elizabeth,

  137. it doesn't take long for Mary

  138. to receive confirmation

  139. about the sign that Gabriel had given her.

  140. Because it says in verses 41 to 45,

  141. And when Elizabeth heard the greeting of Mary,

  142. the baby leapt in her womb,

  143. and Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit.

  144. And she exclaimed with a loud cry,

  145. Blessed are you among women,

  146. and blessed is the fruit of your womb.

  147. And why is this granted to me,

  148. that the mother of my Lord should come to me?

  149. For behold,

  150. when the sound of your greeting came to my ears,

  151. the baby in my womb left for joy.

  152. And blessed is she who believed

  153. that there would be a fulfillment

  154. of what was spoken to her from the Lord.

  155. So this is a fulfillment

  156. of what Gabriel announced

  157. in verses 15 to 17 of this same chapter,

  158. that John would be filled with the Holy Spirit

  159. even from his mother's womb.

  160. So this is a fulfillment of that.

  161. And he also announced that he will go,

  162. John will go before Jesus

  163. in the spirit and power of Elijah

  164. to make ready for the Lord a people prepared.

  165. And what we're seeing now here

  166. is that even in the womb,

  167. baby John is filled with the Holy Spirit,

  168. and he goes before Jesus

  169. and announces his coming.

  170. He's alerting his mother,

  171. here is the Lord,

  172. here is Jesus.

  173. And Elizabeth,

  174. having been alerted by her baby in her womb

  175. in this manner,

  176. is filled with the Holy Spirit herself

  177. and begins to bless Mary

  178. and the baby Jesus in her womb.

  179. And even though she is significantly senior to Mary,

  180. and she humbles herself before Mary

  181. and expresses her sense of grateful disbelief.

  182. Why is this granted to me

  183. that the mother of my Lord should come to me?

  184. The word Lord could simply refer to a human superior,

  185. but since just three verses later,

  186. Mary says,

  187. my soul magnifies the Lord,

  188. and that's in reference to God,

  189. it's hard not to see a reference

  190. to the divinity of Christ here,

  191. that Jesus is indeed God.

  192. He is the Son of God.

  193. He is the divine Lord,

  194. the King above all kings,

  195. the very Son of God,

  196. and because of that,

  197. this is the proper posture of Elizabeth.

  198. This is the proper posture for subjects

  199. who are paid a visit by their king.

  200. I don't know if you've ever met a celebrity in your life,

  201. or if you've seen someone else meet a celebrity,

  202. which is even funnier, right?

  203. It's a very interesting human phenomenon, right?

  204. Because in our culture,

  205. we view celebrities like this,

  206. this larger-than-life,

  207. kind of superhuman kind of figure, right?

  208. And some people just start jumping around and screaming

  209. because they can't help themselves,

  210. they can't handle themselves.

  211. And then other people freeze completely,

  212. they're starstruck,

  213. and are at a loss for words, right?

  214. And if that's how we react to other humans,

  215. however famous they may be,

  216. how much more when we are visited

  217. by the Lord God,

  218. the creator of the universe,

  219. the savior of the world,

  220. as Christians,

  221. we need to recover a little bit of a sense

  222. of that reverence and awe before God.

  223. Do we walk into a worship service

  224. like we are entering into the throne room of the king?

  225. Or are we casual, lackadaisical, bored?

  226. Do we open up our Bibles

  227. with humble submission

  228. as if the king is about to speak?

  229. Or do we read it with less interest

  230. and enthusiasm than we have for our emails?

  231. Do you recognize the staggering reality

  232. that we as God's people

  233. are indwelled by the very spirit of God?

  234. Do we live every moment of our lives

  235. as if we are before the very face of God?

  236. Why is this granted to me

  237. that my Lord should come to me?

  238. That's a great question

  239. that we need to ask more often.

  240. If we did, we'd become more grateful

  241. and humble people.

  242. After explaining that the baby in the womb

  243. left for joy at the sound of Mary's greeting,

  244. Elizabeth says in verse 45,

  245. Mary is blessed because she believed

  246. that there would be a fulfillment

  247. of what was spoken to her from the Lord.

  248. So notice how she phrases it.

  249. Instead of saying,

  250. blessed are you,

  251. which is the more natural way to speak

  252. when you're speaking to the person

  253. that's in front of you,

  254. she says, blessed is she,

  255. referring to Mary in the third person.

  256. And this is a way to kind of generalize the statement

  257. to make Mary a model of faith for everyone,

  258. every future believer

  259. that should be emulating Mary.

  260. She's basically saying,

  261. blessed is anyone who believes

  262. that there would be a fulfillment

  263. of what was spoken from the Lord.

  264. There is a blessedness,

  265. a happiness

  266. that characterizes the life of faith.

  267. And the reason for that is because

  268. faith is the way by which we appropriate

  269. and experience God's grace.

  270. Romans 8.1 says,

  271. there is therefore now no condemnation

  272. for those who are in Christ Jesus.

  273. And this is an objectively true statement.

  274. But when you are feeling overwhelmed

  275. by seemingly insurmountable sin in your life,

  276. when you feel weighed down with guilt,

  277. you have to believe that

  278. in order to experience subjectively

  279. that truth

  280. that there is no condemnation for you in Christ.

  281. Similarly, Ephesians 1.20-21 says,

  282. Christ is seated at God's right hand

  283. in the heavenly places,

  284. far above all rule and authority

  285. and power and dominion,

  286. and above every name that is named,

  287. not only in this age,

  288. but also in the one to come.

  289. That is objectively true.

  290. But when you are full of fear and anxiety,

  291. you have to believe it

  292. in order to experience the comfort

  293. and peace and freedom

  294. that comes from the sovereignty of Jesus Christ.

  295. Philippians 3.7-9 says that

  296. everything is rubbish

  297. compared to the surpassing worth

  298. of knowing Christ Jesus.

  299. But when you are tempted

  300. by the wealth of this world,

  301. the fame of this world,

  302. you have to believe God's word

  303. in order to resist

  304. the pool of worldly treasures

  305. and to cherish Christ above all.

  306. That's the blessedness of faith.

  307. To believe is to be blessed,

  308. to be happy,

  309. to be fortunate.

  310. And Mary was blessed

  311. because she believed

  312. that there would be a fulfillment

  313. of the word of the Lord.

  314. And because of her faith,

  315. she was able to obey

  316. in anticipation of that fulfillment

  317. and as a result,

  318. experience the joy

  319. and satisfaction

  320. and fulfillment

  321. that comes from that.

  322. Those who humbly trust in the Lord

  323. will rejoice in the end

  324. for His mercy.

  325. And that's what we see

  326. in Mary's hymn of praise

  327. in verses 46-56.

  328. Mary begins the hymn

  329. with two parallel poetic lines

  330. in verses 46-47.

  331. She says,

  332. My soul magnifies the Lord

  333. and my spirit rejoices

  334. in God my Savior.

  335. To magnify means

  336. to make large

  337. or to make great,

  338. to make much of something

  339. or someone,

  340. to praise someone.

  341. And Mary magnifies the Lord

  342. not like a microscope

  343. that makes something really small

  344. appear larger than they really are,

  345. but more like a telescope

  346. that takes something

  347. that is huge,

  348. like a faraway star,

  349. appear as they really are.

  350. in their true size.

  351. She magnifies God.

  352. What she's doing

  353. as she does that

  354. is she's appreciating God

  355. as He really is

  356. in His bigness,

  357. in His majesty,

  358. in His glory.

  359. So we praise His greatness

  360. not to make God appear great,

  361. but because He is great.

  362. So that's what Mary is doing.

  363. She magnifies the Lord.

  364. And the parallel line says,

  365. My spirit rejoices in God my Savior.

  366. This is so helpful.

  367. The fact that the words magnify

  368. and the word rejoice

  369. are in parallel construction

  370. is illuminating

  371. because magnifying God

  372. consists in rejoicing in Him.

  373. You guys follow what I'm saying?

  374. Glorifying God

  375. consists in delighting in Him.

  376. Praising God

  377. consists in enjoying God.

  378. This is the insight

  379. that C.S. Lewis

  380. arrived at in his book

  381. Reflections on the Psalms.

  382. He writes,

  383. I think we delight to praise

  384. what we enjoy

  385. because the praise

  386. not merely expresses

  387. but completes the enjoyment.

  388. It is its appointed consummation.

  389. It is not out of compliment

  390. that lovers keep on telling one another

  391. how beautiful they are.

  392. The delight is incomplete

  393. till it is expressed.

  394. When we see a splendid sunset

  395. and we exclaim with a sigh of longing,

  396. Oh, that's so beautiful.

  397. We don't say that

  398. to compliment the sunset.

  399. We say that

  400. because that is the way

  401. in which we delight in it

  402. and enjoy the sunset

  403. by praising it,

  404. by exclaiming about it.

  405. In the same way,

  406. that's what it means

  407. to praise God,

  408. to magnify the Lord.

  409. It means to enjoy Him

  410. and to rejoice in Him.

  411. And that's why

  412. the book of Revelation

  413. describes heaven

  414. as a place

  415. where God's people

  416. are forever praising Him.

  417. And some people

  418. read that description

  419. in Revelation

  420. and think to themselves,

  421. Oh, heaven must be

  422. insufferably boring.

  423. Forever?

  424. Forever?

  425. Far?

  426. Go far from it.

  427. Heaven is where we delight

  428. in God.

  429. We enjoy Him forever.

  430. It is where His love for us

  431. and our love for Him

  432. are experienced

  433. in infinite fullness

  434. without any hindrance

  435. to prevent us.

  436. Heaven is a world of joy.

  437. It's a world of love

  438. as Jonathan Edwards,

  439. a theologian, calls it.

  440. And compared to that,

  441. the mutual enjoyment

  442. and ecstasy

  443. between even a husband

  444. and wife

  445. is a pale shadow.

  446. There dwells God the Father

  447. who in love

  448. chose us

  449. before the foundation

  450. of the world

  451. and predestined us

  452. for adoption to Himself.

  453. Ephesians 1.45

  454. There dwells God the Father

  455. who so loved us

  456. that He gave His only Son

  457. that we might believe in Him

  458. and not perish

  459. but have eternal life.

  460. That's where He dwells.

  461. There dwells God the Son

  462. who showed us

  463. the greatest love there is

  464. by laying down

  465. His own life

  466. for His friends

  467. by dying on the cross

  468. for our sins.

  469. There dwells

  470. the Spirit of God,

  471. the Holy Spirit

  472. who has poured out

  473. God's love

  474. into our hearts

  475. as it says in Romans 5.5

  476. That's heaven.

  477. That's where

  478. we praise God forever.

  479. And so Jonathan Edwards

  480. as he says in his sermon

  481. Heaven a world full of love

  482. There in heaven

  483. this fountain of love

  484. this eternal three in one

  485. is set open

  486. without any obstacle

  487. to hinder access to it.

  488. There this glorious God

  489. is manifested

  490. and shines forth

  491. in full glory

  492. in beams of love

  493. There the fountain

  494. overflows

  495. in streams

  496. and rivers of love

  497. and delight.

  498. enough for all

  499. to drink at

  500. and to swim in

  501. yea so as to overflow

  502. the world as it were

  503. with a deluge

  504. a flood

  505. of love

  506. That's

  507. the sure hope

  508. of the Christian.

  509. Those who say

  510. that praising God

  511. is boring

  512. betray their only

  513. impoverished understanding

  514. of God

  515. their own

  516. anemic appreciation

  517. of God

  518. to glorify God

  519. is to enjoy Him

  520. to magnify God

  521. is to rejoice in Him

  522. and then

  523. in verses 48 to 50

  524. Mary gives the reasons

  525. why she magnifies

  526. and rejoices

  527. in the Lord

  528. and the first reason

  529. is in verse 48

  530. for

  531. He has looked

  532. on the humble estate

  533. of His servant

  534. for behold

  535. from now on

  536. all generations

  537. will call me

  538. blessed

  539. well here in chapter 1

  540. verse 38

  541. Mary said

  542. behold I am

  543. the servant

  544. of the Lord

  545. let it be to me

  546. according to your word

  547. and Mary once again

  548. here describes herself

  549. as God's servant

  550. the word is

  551. is a reference

  552. to a bond servant

  553. a slave

  554. Mary acknowledged

  555. that her estate

  556. is humble

  557. she is lowly

  558. and yet

  559. God from on high

  560. has looked

  561. on her

  562. and has made her

  563. the mother

  564. of Jesus Christ

  565. the Savior

  566. of the world

  567. and for this

  568. she says

  569. all generations

  570. will call

  571. me blessed

  572. and verse 48

  573. is paralleled

  574. by verses 49 to 50

  575. it says

  576. for

  577. He who is mighty

  578. has done great things

  579. for me

  580. and holy is His name

  581. and His mercy

  582. is for those

  583. who fear Him

  584. from generation

  585. to generation

  586. verse 49

  587. is a flip side

  588. of verse 48

  589. 48 focuses on

  590. Mary's poverty

  591. her impoverishment

  592. and verse 49

  593. focuses on

  594. God's lavishness

  595. His generosity

  596. verse 48

  597. focuses on

  598. Mary's weakness

  599. verse 49

  600. focuses on

  601. God's might

  602. verse 48

  603. focuses on

  604. Mary's lowliness

  605. and verse 49

  606. focuses on

  607. the greatness

  608. of what God

  609. has done for her

  610. anyway

  611. even though Mary

  612. was undeserving

  613. and lowly

  614. God has bestowed

  615. on her

  616. unprecedented honor

  617. from on

  618. high

  619. and likewise

  620. the end of

  621. verse 48

  622. is paralleled

  623. by verse 50

  624. from now on

  625. all generations

  626. will call me

  627. blessed

  628. because God's

  629. mercy is for

  630. those who fear

  631. Him from

  632. generation

  633. to generation

  634. because God

  635. is merciful

  636. to those

  637. who fear

  638. Him

  639. to those

  640. who humble

  641. themselves

  642. before Him

  643. Mary as the

  644. recipient of

  645. God's mercy

  646. will be called

  647. blessed by

  648. all generations

  649. and the phrase

  650. from now on

  651. is an important

  652. Lukean phrase

  653. it indicates

  654. a significant

  655. change that

  656. took place

  657. when Jesus

  658. came to

  659. earth

  660. the change

  661. that took

  662. place in

  663. God's

  664. redemption

  665. plan

  666. so that

  667. from now

  668. on

  669. nothing

  670. is the

  671. same

  672. and so

  673. for the

  674. world

  675. and for

  676. Mary

  677. nothing

  678. will be

  679. the same

  680. again

  681. now Mary

  682. will be

  683. called

  684. blessed

  685. forever

  686. and if

  687. God is

  688. merciful

  689. to the

  690. humble

  691. then the

  692. converse

  693. the opposite

  694. of that

  695. statement

  696. is also

  697. true

  698. and that's

  699. what Mary

  700. turns to

  701. next in

  702. verses 51

  703. to 53

  704. he has

  705. shown

  706. strength

  707. with his

  708. arm

  709. he has

  710. scattered

  711. the proud

  712. in the

  713. thoughts

  714. of their

  715. hearts

  716. he has

  717. brought

  718. down

  719. the mighty

  720. from their

  721. thrones

  722. and exalted

  723. those of

  724. humble estate

  725. he has

  726. filled the

  727. hungry

  728. with good

  729. things

  730. and the

  731. rich

  732. he has

  733. sent

  734. away

  735. empty

  736. this is

  737. echoing

  738. what we

  739. see

  740. repeatedly

  741. throughout

  742. the entire

  743. years

  744. that God's

  745. consistent

  746. mode of

  747. operation

  748. is to

  749. oppose

  750. the proud

  751. but give

  752. grace

  753. to the

  754. humble

  755. and that's

  756. what Mary

  757. sees God

  758. doing through

  759. the conception

  760. of Jesus

  761. Christ

  762. the God

  763. who is

  764. mighty

  765. has brought

  766. down the

  767. mighty

  768. from their

  769. thrones

  770. and instead

  771. has exalted

  772. those of

  773. humble estate

  774. so it's not

  775. King Herod

  776. who will get

  777. the last laugh

  778. as a Davidic

  779. Messiah

  780. wannabe

  781. it's not

  782. the Roman

  783. Emperor

  784. Augustus

  785. who will prevail

  786. in the end

  787. but it will be

  788. King Jesus

  789. born from

  790. the womb

  791. of lowly

  792. Mary

  793. who will

  794. triumph

  795. and establish

  796. the kingdom

  797. of God

  798. the oppressors

  799. will be scattered

  800. and the oppressed

  801. people of God

  802. will be gathered

  803. around the throne

  804. of Jesus

  805. and this reality

  806. is so certain

  807. that even though

  808. it hasn't happened

  809. yet

  810. Mary uses

  811. the past tense

  812. to describe it

  813. it's what

  814. grammarians call

  815. the prophetic

  816. past

  817. it's so certain

  818. to happen

  819. that even though

  820. it lies in the

  821. future

  822. they use the

  823. past tense

  824. to describe

  825. as if

  826. it had

  827. already

  828. happened

  829. as if

  830. it has

  831. already

  832. happened

  833. because that's

  834. how certain

  835. it is

  836. Paul speaks

  837. of this reality

  838. too doesn't he

  839. about how God

  840. gives grace

  841. to the humble

  842. in 1 Corinthians

  843. 1 27-29

  844. God chose

  845. what is

  846. foolish in the

  847. world to shame

  848. the wise

  849. God chose

  850. what is weak

  851. in the world

  852. to shame

  853. the strong

  854. God chose

  855. what is low

  856. and despised

  857. in the world

  858. even things

  859. that are not

  860. to bring to

  861. nothing

  862. things that

  863. are so

  864. that no

  865. human being

  866. might boast

  867. in the presence

  868. of God

  869. those who claim

  870. to be wise

  871. in this world

  872. and then reject

  873. the word of God

  874. will not be saved

  875. but only those

  876. who profess

  877. their ignorance

  878. submit to God's

  879. wisdom

  880. those who claim

  881. to be strong

  882. and deny

  883. their need

  884. for God

  885. will not be

  886. saved

  887. but only those

  888. who acknowledge

  889. their weakness

  890. and cry out

  891. to God

  892. for help

  893. those who claim

  894. to be high

  895. and noble

  896. and powerful

  897. and spurn

  898. God

  899. as their

  900. Lord

  901. will not

  902. be saved

  903. but only

  904. those who

  905. humble themselves

  906. before God

  907. and serve

  908. him as

  909. their Lord

  910. and by

  911. choosing to

  912. save us

  913. through Jesus

  914. in this way

  915. Jesus who

  916. ascended to

  917. his throne

  918. and established

  919. his kingdom

  920. by redeeming

  921. people for

  922. himself

  923. by dying

  924. on the cross

  925. God destroys

  926. all human

  927. pride and

  928. pretension

  929. we cannot

  930. save ourselves

  931. that's why

  932. Paul says

  933. in 2nd

  934. Corinthians

  935. 12

  936. 9

  937. I will

  938. boast

  939. all the

  940. more

  941. gladly

  942. of my

  943. weaknesses

  944. so that

  945. the power

  946. of Christ

  947. may rest

  948. upon me

  949. some of you

  950. are in a

  951. season of

  952. being humbled

  953. by God

  954. if God's

  955. humbling you

  956. right now

  957. if you feel

  958. like you're

  959. being laid

  960. low

  961. by God

  962. maybe it's

  963. failing in

  964. school

  965. maybe it's

  966. being disrespected

  967. by your

  968. peers

  969. maybe it's

  970. being unemployed

  971. maybe it's

  972. the weight

  973. of sin

  974. that makes

  975. you feel

  976. undeserving

  977. of God's

  978. salvation

  979. if God's

  980. making you

  981. feel weak

  982. right now

  983. don't let

  984. that drive

  985. you to

  986. despair

  987. let that

  988. drive you

  989. to Christ

  990. and boast

  991. in your

  992. weakness

  993. because there

  994. you will

  995. find the

  996. power of

  997. Christ

  998. rest on

  999. God

  1000. brings down

  1001. the mighty

  1002. from their

  1003. thrones

  1004. and exalts

  1005. those of

  1006. humble estate

  1007. a Puritan

  1008. prayer puts

  1009. it beautifully

  1010. this way

  1011. as water

  1012. rests not

  1013. on barren

  1014. hill summits

  1015. but flows

  1016. down to

  1017. fertilize

  1018. lowest

  1019. veils

  1020. make me

  1021. the lowest

  1022. of the

  1023. Lord

  1024. my spiritual

  1025. riches may

  1026. exceedingly

  1027. abound

  1028. gives grace

  1029. to the

  1030. whole

  1031. and Mary

  1032. concludes her

  1033. hymn

  1034. by recalling

  1035. the promises

  1036. that God

  1037. had made

  1038. to her

  1039. forefathers

  1040. in verses

  1041. 54 to

  1042. 55

  1043. he has

  1044. helped

  1045. his

  1046. servant

  1047. Israel

  1048. in

  1049. remembrance

  1050. of his

  1051. mercy

  1052. as he

  1053. spoke

  1054. to our

  1055. fathers

  1056. to Abraham

  1057. and to

  1058. his

  1059. offspring

  1060. forever

  1061. God

  1062. remembered

  1063. his

  1064. mercy

  1065. toward

  1066. his

  1067. people

  1068. he

  1069. remembered

  1070. the

  1071. commitment

  1072. that he

  1073. had made

  1074. toward

  1075. his

  1076. people

  1077. it's a

  1078. sad thing

  1079. to be

  1080. forgotten

  1081. isn't it

  1082. whether it's

  1083. your

  1084. best friend

  1085. that forgets

  1086. your birthday

  1087. or your

  1088. spouse

  1089. that forgets

  1090. your anniversary

  1091. or your

  1092. aging

  1093. grandparent

  1094. forgets

  1095. your name

  1096. or a

  1097. grandparent

  1098. that gets

  1099. forgotten

  1100. and neglected

  1101. even when

  1102. they pass

  1103. no one

  1104. knows

  1105. Israel

  1106. has for

  1107. many years

  1108. now felt

  1109. forgotten

  1110. and forsaken

  1111. by God

  1112. and yet

  1113. God

  1114. has proven

  1115. decisively

  1116. through Jesus

  1117. that he

  1118. remembers

  1119. them

  1120. he has

  1121. remembered

  1122. them

  1123. and has

  1124. intervened

  1125. on their

  1126. behalf

  1127. in mercy

  1128. and as

  1129. Jesus

  1130. served

  1131. to remind

  1132. Mary

  1133. of God's

  1134. remembering

  1135. his mercy

  1136. let Jesus

  1137. and his

  1138. gracious

  1139. saving acts

  1140. remind you

  1141. also of the

  1142. fact that

  1143. God has

  1144. and continues

  1145. to remember

  1146. you

  1147. Satan

  1148. our enemy

  1149. will accuse

  1150. you

  1151. and lie

  1152. to you

  1153. saying that

  1154. you are

  1155. forgotten

  1156. by God

  1157. that's why

  1158. these things

  1159. are happening

  1160. to you

  1161. you're

  1162. forsaken

  1163. he doesn't

  1164. care

  1165. but let

  1166. Christ

  1167. stand guard

  1168. over your

  1169. mind

  1170. and guard

  1171. over your

  1172. heart

  1173. and dispel

  1174. those lies

  1175. because God

  1176. remembers his

  1177. mercy

  1178. toward you

  1179. and Jesus

  1180. and his life

  1181. and his death

  1182. and his

  1183. resurrection

  1184. is the proof

  1185. of that

  1186. once and

  1187. for all

  1188. those who

  1189. humbly

  1190. trust in

  1191. the Lord

  1192. will rejoice

  1193. in the end

  1194. for his

  1195. mercy

  1196. that's

  1197. Mary's

  1198. faith

  1199. and rejoicing

  1200. and then she

  1201. returns home

  1202. after spending

  1203. three months

  1204. with Elizabeth

  1205. shortly before

  1206. John's birth

  1207. and in verses

  1208. 57 to 80

  1209. the focus

  1210. shifts back

  1211. to John's

  1212. parents

  1213. and we see

  1214. Zechariah's

  1215. faith

  1216. and rejoicing

  1217. verses 57

  1218. to 58

  1219. am I not

  1220. coming out

  1221. of the mic

  1222. anymore

  1223. verses 57

  1224. to 58

  1225. tell us

  1226. of John's

  1227. birth

  1228. it says

  1229. now the

  1230. time came

  1231. for Elizabeth

  1232. to give

  1233. birth

  1234. and she

  1235. bore a

  1236. son

  1237. and her

  1238. neighbors

  1239. and relatives

  1240. heard that

  1241. the Lord

  1242. had shown

  1243. great mercy

  1244. to her

  1245. and they

  1246. rejoiced

  1247. with her

  1248. so this

  1249. is further

  1250. fulfillment

  1251. of the

  1252. angel's

  1253. announcement

  1254. in chapter

  1255. 1

  1256. verses 13

  1257. to 17

  1258. the angel's

  1259. word that

  1260. John would

  1261. be filled

  1262. with the

  1263. Holy Spirit

  1264. even from

  1265. his mother's

  1266. womb

  1267. was fulfilled

  1268. when he

  1269. left with

  1270. joy at

  1271. the greeting

  1272. of Mary

  1273. and now

  1274. the angel's

  1275. word that

  1276. Elizabeth

  1277. would bear

  1278. a son

  1279. is fulfilled

  1280. in exactly

  1281. those words

  1282. and the

  1283. promise that

  1284. you will

  1285. have joy

  1286. and gladness

  1287. and many

  1288. will rejoice

  1289. at his birth

  1290. from verse 14

  1291. is also

  1292. fulfilled

  1293. because now

  1294. people are

  1295. rejoicing along

  1296. with Elizabeth

  1297. and Zechariah

  1298. and so

  1299. Elizabeth does

  1300. bear a son

  1301. many rejoice

  1302. with her

  1303. and joy

  1304. is really

  1305. a running

  1306. theme

  1307. throughout

  1308. this passage

  1309. that recount

  1310. the birth

  1311. of John

  1312. and Jesus

  1313. and now

  1314. that John's

  1315. been born

  1316. the announcement

  1317. that the angel's

  1318. been fulfilled

  1319. it's not time

  1320. for Zechariah

  1321. and Elizabeth

  1322. to obey God

  1323. because the angel

  1324. had also

  1325. commanded them

  1326. in verse 13

  1327. you shall

  1328. call his name

  1329. John

  1330. now verses

  1331. 59 to 66

  1332. tell us about

  1333. John's naming

  1334. remember

  1335. in verse 6

  1336. that Zechariah

  1337. and Elizabeth

  1338. were both

  1339. righteous

  1340. and blameless

  1341. in obeying

  1342. God's commandments

  1343. and so they

  1344. followed God's

  1345. commandments

  1346. to circumcise

  1347. the baby

  1348. on the eighth

  1349. day

  1350. as it says

  1351. in verse 59

  1352. and then

  1353. their relatives

  1354. who were there

  1355. for the birth

  1356. and the circumcision

  1357. want to name

  1358. the child

  1359. Zechariah

  1360. after his father

  1361. which was

  1362. customary to do

  1363. in this culture

  1364. but Elizabeth

  1365. likely having

  1366. conferred with

  1367. Zechariah already

  1368. answers them

  1369. in verse 60

  1370. no

  1371. he shall

  1372. he shall

  1373. be called

  1374. John

  1375. but they

  1376. protest

  1377. these are

  1378. stubborn

  1379. relatives

  1380. none of your

  1381. relatives

  1382. is called

  1383. by this

  1384. name

  1385. what are you

  1386. thinking

  1387. it was

  1388. customary

  1389. among the

  1390. Jews

  1391. to name

  1392. children

  1393. after their

  1394. relatives

  1395. so they

  1396. take it

  1397. up with

  1398. Zechariah

  1399. perhaps

  1400. thinking

  1401. to themselves

  1402. that

  1403. Elizabeth

  1404. is going

  1405. rogue

  1406. and hadn't

  1407. consulted

  1408. her husband

  1409. and perhaps

  1410. thinking

  1411. to themselves

  1412. well surely

  1413. Zechariah

  1414. would want

  1415. us to name

  1416. his only

  1417. son

  1418. after him

  1419. so they

  1420. it says

  1421. that they

  1422. made signs

  1423. to his

  1424. father

  1425. inquiring

  1426. what he

  1427. wanted him

  1428. to be

  1429. called

  1430. so based

  1431. on this

  1432. verse

  1433. I suggested

  1434. to you

  1435. last week

  1436. that Zechariah

  1437. must have

  1438. been struck

  1439. a death

  1440. not merely

  1441. mute

  1442. because they're

  1443. making signs

  1444. to him

  1445. instead of

  1446. asking him

  1447. the question

  1448. that's what

  1449. a majority

  1450. of the Bible

  1451. scholars think

  1452. but as I was

  1453. studying this

  1454. passage I

  1455. think I was

  1456. wrong so I

  1457. want to

  1458. retract that

  1459. from last

  1460. week

  1461. I think

  1462. what's

  1463. happening

  1464. is

  1465. because the

  1466. word to

  1467. make sign

  1468. can also

  1469. mean to

  1470. motion

  1471. or to

  1472. nod

  1473. or to

  1474. gesture

  1475. towards

  1476. someone

  1477. using

  1478. your

  1479. body

  1480. and so

  1481. because

  1482. this

  1483. passage

  1484. only speaks

  1485. of him

  1486. losing

  1487. his speech

  1488. it doesn't

  1489. specifically

  1490. mention him

  1491. losing his

  1492. hearing also

  1493. I think it's

  1494. more likely

  1495. that he's

  1496. just unable

  1497. to speak

  1498. so he's

  1499. hearing all

  1500. this conversation

  1501. and Elizabeth

  1502. is talking

  1503. they're asking

  1504. Elizabeth

  1505. hey what

  1506. should we

  1507. name him

  1508. Elizabeth

  1509. says his

  1510. name shall

  1511. be John

  1512. so Zechariah

  1513. is hearing

  1514. all this

  1515. but they

  1516. want his

  1517. confirmation

  1518. so they

  1519. gesture to

  1520. him

  1521. hey so

  1522. what do you

  1523. think

  1524. so he's

  1525. I think that's

  1526. what is going

  1527. on and so

  1528. because he can't

  1529. speak they bring

  1530. him a writing

  1531. tablet so he

  1532. can write his

  1533. response and

  1534. he says his

  1535. name is

  1536. John

  1537. right he

  1538. doesn't say

  1539. his name

  1540. shall be

  1541. John he

  1542. says his

  1543. name is

  1544. John

  1545. different from

  1546. the way

  1547. Elizabeth

  1548. phrased it

  1549. that's his

  1550. name because

  1551. God says

  1552. so

  1553. that's the

  1554. name that

  1555. God commanded

  1556. me to give

  1557. him that's

  1558. the name that

  1559. the angel

  1560. announced so

  1561. it's not a

  1562. matter what I

  1563. shall name

  1564. him his

  1565. name is

  1566. John whether

  1567. I like it

  1568. or not I

  1569. don't have

  1570. any choice in

  1571. this matter so

  1572. this shows

  1573. John's submission

  1574. and obedience

  1575. to God in

  1576. that period of

  1577. being struck

  1578. with muteness

  1579. Zechariah has

  1580. learned to

  1581. trust God

  1582. and the

  1583. agreement of

  1584. Zechariah and

  1585. Elizabeth on

  1586. this unusual

  1587. name fills the

  1588. crowd with

  1589. wonder he

  1590. says and

  1591. then immediately

  1592. Zechariah's

  1593. mouth was

  1594. opened and

  1595. his tongue

  1596. loosed and

  1597. he spoke

  1598. blessing God

  1599. now that the

  1600. word God's

  1601. word has been

  1602. fulfilled a

  1603. sign of muteness

  1604. that God had

  1605. given to

  1606. Zechariah is

  1607. also fulfilled

  1608. and comes to

  1609. an end so

  1610. that Zechariah

  1611. is able to

  1612. speak and

  1613. then verse

  1614. 65 tells us

  1615. that as a

  1616. result of that

  1617. fear came on

  1618. all their

  1619. neighbors so

  1620. we're told of

  1621. three different

  1622. reactions of

  1623. the relatives and

  1624. neighbors in this

  1625. passage right

  1626. verse 58 told us

  1627. that they rejoiced

  1628. that a son was

  1629. born to an old

  1630. formerly barren

  1631. couple verse

  1632. 63 they

  1633. wondered at

  1634. John's

  1635. untraditional

  1636. name and the

  1637. fact that

  1638. Zechariah and

  1639. Elizabeth agreed

  1640. on that and

  1641. then in verse

  1642. 65 they are

  1643. filled with

  1644. reverential fear

  1645. that after

  1646. seeing Zechariah

  1647. speak again

  1648. miracle of

  1649. restored speech

  1650. so these

  1651. three things

  1652. all point to

  1653. the fact that

  1654. John is not

  1655. an ordinary

  1656. child this

  1657. new baby

  1658. becomes the

  1659. talk of the

  1660. town and

  1661. the entire

  1662. region and

  1663. the people

  1664. leave Elizabeth

  1665. and Zechariah's

  1666. home saying to

  1667. themselves what

  1668. then will this

  1669. child be for

  1670. the hand of the

  1671. Lord was with

  1672. him and just

  1673. as the

  1674. fulfillment of

  1675. God's promise

  1676. to Mary in

  1677. verses 39 to

  1678. 45 was

  1679. accompanied in

  1680. Mary's by

  1681. Mary's hymn of

  1682. praise now the

  1683. fulfillment of God's

  1684. promise to

  1685. Zechariah here

  1686. is also

  1687. accompanied by

  1688. Zechariah's

  1689. hymn this is

  1690. probably what he

  1691. spontaneously burst

  1692. out with when

  1693. his speech was

  1694. restored and he

  1695. says he blessed

  1696. God because that's

  1697. the first thing he

  1698. says and this

  1699. came in the

  1700. inspiration of the

  1701. Holy Spirit verse

  1702. 67 tells that

  1703. Zechariah was

  1704. filled with the

  1705. Holy Spirit and

  1706. prophesied it's a

  1707. prophetic hymn

  1708. inspired by the

  1709. Spirit and the

  1710. hymn has two

  1711. sections in verses

  1712. 68 to 75 Zechariah

  1713. speaks of what God

  1714. has done and

  1715. then in the rest

  1716. of it 76 to 79

  1717. he speaks of what

  1718. his son John will

  1719. do so what God

  1720. has done is

  1721. described in verses

  1722. 68 to 69

  1723. blessed be the

  1724. Lord God of

  1725. Israel for he

  1726. has visited and

  1727. redeemed his

  1728. people and has

  1729. raised up a horn

  1730. of salvation for

1731. us in the house of

  1732. his servant David

  1733. what God does for

  1734. his people here is

  1735. described in terms

  1736. of three words

  1737. visitation redemption

  1738. and salvation

  1739. first God has

  1740. visited his people

  1741. the word visit is

  1742. an important word

  1743. for Luke he uses

  1744. it repeatedly

  1745. throughout the

  1746. gospel and also

  1747. in the book of

  1748. Acts which he also

  1749. wrote and it

  1750. always conveys

  1751. God's gracious

  1752. intervention on

  1753. behalf of his

  1754. people and in this

  1755. passage is repeated

  1756. again in verse 78

  1757. later to refer to

  1758. the coming of the

  1759. Messiah so the way

  1760. God visits his

  1761. people is through

  1762. Jesus the promised

  1763. messianic king from

  1764. the line of David

  1765. the visitation of

  1766. God happens through

  1767. the incarnation of

  1768. Jesus Christ Jesus

  1769. becoming a human

  1770. taking on human

  1771. flesh and living

  1772. among us that's why

  1773. Jesus is called

  1774. Emmanuel which means

  1775. God with us in

  1776. Christ who came we

1777. have God with us in

  1778. the spirit of God

  1779. who indwells us we

1780. have God with us we

  1781. have been visited by

  1782. the God of salvation

  1783. God of all creation

  1784. and the second God

  1785. has redeemed his

  1786. people redemption

  1787. conveys the idea of

  1788. purchasing the rights

  1789. of a slave commenting

  1790. on the Exodus Moses

  1791. says in Deuteronomy 15

  1792. 15 you shall remember

1793. that you were a slave

1794. in the land of Egypt

1795. and the Lord your God

  1796. redeemed you so then

  1797. the redemption of

  1798. Israel from Egypt meant

1799. that they were no longer

  1800. slaves to Pharaoh but

  1801. slaves to the Lord

1802. they had been freed and

1803. no longer enslaved to a

1804. fellow man but to their

  1805. creator as they were

1806. intended to be that's the

  1807. meaning of redemption

  1808. God's people would no

  1809. longer be enslaved to

  1810. their enemies or

  1811. oppressors but they will

  1812. be slaves of the

  1813. gracious Lord God

  1814. servants of God that's

1815. why the purpose of God's

  1816. redemption is given this

  1817. way in verses 74 to 75

1818. read with me that we

  1819. being delivered from

1820. the hand of our enemies

  1821. might serve him without

  1822. fear in holiness and

  1823. righteousness before him

1824. all our days that's what

1825. Jesus did for us first

  1826. Peter 1 18 to 19 says

  1827. that Christians have been

  1828. ransomed with the precious

1829. blood of Christ the blood of

1830. Christ his death his life

1831. given for us is the

  1832. ransom the redemption

1833. price that God paid for

1834. us we were all once

1835. slaves of sin as Romans 6

  1836. says but because Jesus

1837. paid the penalty of our

1838. sin and redeemed us from

1839. by dying on the cross in

1840. our place we are not free

1841. to serve God and that's

  1842. why 1st Corinthians 7 23

1843. says you were bought with

1844. the price do not become

1845. bond servants of men we

  1846. have been delivered from

1847. the hand of our enemies

1848. that we might serve God

  1849. without fear in holiness

  1850. and righteousness before

1851. him all our days so are

1852. you serving God with your

1853. life and if not God whom

1854. are you serving where does

  1855. your ultimate allegiance lie

  1856. are you serving yourself

  1857. are you a workaholic

  1858. enslaved to your boss

1859. are you serving your city is that

  1860. where your primary ultimate

1861. allegiance is because to serve

1862. God is what Christ redeemed you

1863. for paid for with his own

  1864. blood so if you're a Christian

  1865. that's where your ultimate

1866. allegiance lies you are not

1867. your own you were bought with

1868. a price so glorify God and then

1869. third so that second is

1870. redemption third idea is salvation

1871. verse 69 says that God has raised

1872. up a horn of salvation for us in

1873. the house of his servant David the

1874. horn of salvation comes from the

1875. image of a horned ox that gores its

1876. enemies into submission right this

1877. expression is used in second

  1878. Samuel 22 3 and Psalm 18 2 to

1879. refer to God himself so this too is

1880. to imply the divinity of the son of

1881. God the Jesus and by dying on the

1882. cross for us and then being raised

1883. from the dead Jesus defeats sin and

1884. death and subdues all the spiritual

1885. forces of evil so that they no longer

1886. have any claim on those who have been

1887. united to Christ by faith and not only are

1888. spiritual enemies but also the

1889. physical enemies of God's people as

1890. well will be subdued by the Lord

1891. open doors is is a is a Christian

1892. foundation that serves Christians in

1893. persecuted areas throughout the world

1894. and they published a report at the

1895. beginning of this year summarizing last

1896. year's finding and research and it

1897. states that one in 12 Christians that's

1898. about 215 million total live in an

1899. area where they face high level of

1900. persecution for their faith in 2017 3066

1901. Christians were killed 1252 were

1902. abducted nearly 800 church buildings

1903. were defaced and 1020 Christians were

1904. raped or sexually harassed for their

1905. faith just a few days ago a hundred

1906. underground Christians in China were

1907. arrested and it's estimated that about

  1908. hundred thousand Christians have

1909. already been arrested so far this year

  1910. in China

1911. all because they pledged their ultimate

1912. allegiance not to any earthly ruler but

  1913. to Christ their king

1914. all those who have hated and oppressed God's

1915. people will be defeated by the horn of

1916. salvation at Jesus second coming those

1917. who humbly trust in the Lord will

1918. return in the end for his mercy and then

1919. in verses 76 to 79 Zechariah turns his

1920. attention to what his son John will do he

1921. says and you child will be called the

1922. prophet of the most high for you will

1923. go before the Lord to prepare his ways to

1924. give knowledge of salvation to his people

1925. in the forgiveness of their sins so

1926. John's subordinate supportive role to

1927. Jesus is clearly laid out here because in

1928. verse 32 Jesus was described as the son of

1929. the most high but John is the prophet of

1930. the most high Jesus was called Lord in

1931. verse 42 and John is the one who prepares

1932. the way for the Lord and Jesus is the horn

1933. of salvation as I said in 69 John is the

1934. one who gives knowledge of salvation he

1935. will point to Jesus that they might

1936. receive forgiveness of their sins and

1937. then in verses 70 to 79 Zechariah

1938. recounts once more why God's salvation

1939. has come because of the tender mercy of

1940. our God whereby the sunrise shall visit us

1941. from on high to give light to those who

1942. sit in darkness and in the shadow of

1943. death to guide our feet into the way of

1944. peace the sunrise that will visit us is

1945. another reference to Jesus who says in

1946. John 8 verse 12 I am the light of the

    John 8:12

1947. world whoever follows me will not walk in

1948. darkness but will have the light of life

1949. without light we would be groping around in

1950. the darkness unable to find our way but

1951. Jesus has come to give light to those who

1952. sit in darkness and in the shadow of death to

1953. guide our feet into the way of peace Jesus is

1954. the light that illuminates our darkened

1955. minds he's the light that dispels the

1956. darkness hidden in our hearts and the

1957. reason why the light of the world comes to

1958. us is summarized in this one word here in

  1959. verse 78 God's mercy God's tender

1960. compassionate mercy this is now the fifth

1961. time that the word mercy has been used in

1962. this passage alone it's the key word of

1963. this passage in the Greek translation of

1964. the Hebrew Old Testament the word mercy

1965. most often translates the Hebrew word that

1966. means steadfast love God's loving kindness

1967. love for people who do not know the

1968. not deserve it the overflow of God's

1969. God's kindness that finds its basis not in

1970. the worthiness of the recipients but in the

1971. bondfulness the generosity of the

1972. Giver so let me ask me ask you a question

1973. on judgment day of God's heavenly court what
