  1. Heavenly Father, we have gathered this morning as your people.

  2. And we now incline our ears and our hearts toward your word because we believe that you seek to us, you Lord.

  3. We have this privilege of gathering in your name because of what you did on our behalf.

  4. And sending your son, Jesus.

  5. On Christmas Day, we live a perfect life, to die for our sins, and be raised for our justification.

  6. And that privilege, Lord, we do not want to take the rest.

  7. We ask God that you would strike us this morning on you with the wonder of Christmas.

  8. The wonder of Christ, the Lord, the Son of God.

  9. In Jesus' name we pray.

  10. Amen.

  11. Luke chapter 2.

    Luke 2 chapter mention

  12. I will go ahead and read out loud.

  13. Justin is supposed to read for this morning, but he's really sick.

  14. He's got a new clay.

  15. He's staying home.

  16. Maybe Luke chapter 2.

    Luke 2 chapter mention

  17. In those days, a decree went out from Caesar Augustus that all the world should be registered.

  18. This was the first registration when Quirinius was governor of Syria.

  19. And all went to be registered, each to his own town.

  20. And Joseph also went out from Galilee, from the town of Nazareth, to Judea, to the city of David, which is called Bethlehem.

  21. Because he was of the house and lineage of David.

  22. To be registered with Mary, his betrothed, who was with child.

  23. And while they were there, the time came for her to give birth.

  24. And she gave birth to her firstborn son and wrapped him in swaddling cloths and laid him in a manger.

  25. Because there was no place for them in the inn.

  26. And in the same region, there were shepherds out there, keeping watch over their flock by night.

  27. And an angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them.

  28. And they were filled with great fear.

  29. And the angel said to them, Fear not, for behold, I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people.

  30. For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord.

  31. And this will be a sign for you.

  32. You will find a baby wrapped in swaddling cloths and lying in a manger.

  33. And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly hosts, praising God and saying,

  34. Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace among those with whom he is pleased.

  35. When the angels went away from them into heaven, the shepherds said to one another,

  36. Let us go over to Bethlehem and see this thing that has happened, which the Lord has made known to us.

  37. And they went with haste and found Mary and Joseph and the baby lying in a manger.

  38. And when they saw it, they made known the saying that had been told them concerning this child.

  39. And all who heard it wondered at what the shepherds told them.

  40. But Mary, treasuring up all these things, pondering them in her heart.

  41. And the shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all they had heard and seen as it had been told.

  42. And at the end of eight days, when he was circumcised, he was called Jesus.

  43. It's the name given by the angel before he was conceived in the womb.

  44. And when the time came for their purification according to the law of Moses, they brought him up to Jerusalem to present him to the Lord.

  45. As it is written in the law of the Lord, every male who first opens the womb shall be called fully to the Lord,

  46. and to offer sacrifice according to what is said in the law of the Lord, a pair of turtledoves or two young pigeons.

  47. Now, there was a man in Jerusalem whose name was Simeon.

  48. And this man was righteous and devout, waiting for the consolation of Israel, and the Holy Spirit was upon him.

  49. And it had been revealed to him by the Holy Spirit that he would not see death before he had seen the Lord Christ.

  50. And he came in his spirit into the temple.

  51. And when the parents brought in the child Jesus to do for him according to the custom of the law,

  52. he took him up in his arms and blessed God and said,

  53. Lord, now you are letting your servant depart in peace according to your work.

  54. For my eyes have seen your salvation, that you are prepared in the presence of all peoples,

  55. of light for revelation to the Gentiles, and for glory to your people Israel.

  56. And his father and his mother marveled at what was said about him.

  57. And Simeon blessed them and said to Mary his mother,

  58. Behold, this child is appointed for the fall and rising of many in Israel,

  59. and for a sign that is opposed, and a sword will pierce to your own souls,

  60. so that the thoughts from many hearts may be revealed.

  61. And there was a prophetess, Anna, the daughter of Thania of the tribe of Asher.

  62. She was advanced in years, having lived with her husband seven years from when she was a virgin,

  63. and then as a widow until she was 84.

  64. She did not depart from the temple, worshipping with fasting and prayer at night and day.

  65. And coming up that very hour, she began to give thanks to God

  66. and to speak of him to all who were waiting for the redemption of Jerusalem.

  67. And when they had performed everything according to the law of the Lord,

  68. they returned into Galilee to their own town of Nazareth.

  69. And the child grew and became strong, filled with wisdom, and the favor of God was upon him.

  70. Now his parents went to Jerusalem every year at the feast of the Passover.

  71. And when he was 12 years old, they went up according to custom.

  72. And when the feast was ended, as they were returning, the boy Jesus stayed behind in Jerusalem.

  73. His parents did not know it, but supposing him to be in the group, they went a day's journey.

  74. But then they began to search for him among their relatives and acquaintances.

  75. And when they did not find him, they returned to Jerusalem, searching for him.

  76. After three days, they found him in the temple, sitting among the teachers,

  77. listening to them and asking them questions.

  78. And all who heard him were amazed at his understanding and his answer.

  79. And when his parents saw him, they were astonished.

  80. And his mother said to him,

  81. Son, why have you treated us so?

  82. Behold, your father and I have been searching for you in great distress.

  83. And he said to them,

  84. Why were you looking for me?

  85. Did you not know that I must be my father's house?

  86. And they did not understand the saying that he spoke to them.

  87. And he went down with them and came to Nazareth and submitted to them.

  88. And his mother treasured up all these things in her heart.

  89. And Jesus increased in wisdom and in stature and in favor with God and man.

  90. Always winter and never Christmas.

  91. I guess my recognized line.

  92. That's the condition in which we discover the imaginary world of Narnia in C.S. Lewis' book,

  93. The Lion, the Witch, and the Warbrook.

  94. And Christmas follows the winter solstice, which for us was this past Friday, December 21st,

  95. the shortest day of the year when the sun seemed to pass by only for a few fleeting moments.

  96. And in Narnia, it was always winter, never Christmas.

  97. The blistering cold kept people as shuddered in,

  98. and the frozen world seemed impervious to the faint rays of light.

  99. And this is an apt description of the world before the coming of Christ as well,

  100. which we celebrate on Christmas Day.

  101. God's people were looking for relief, looking for salvation,

  102. but their God, it seemed to them, was nowhere to be found.

  103. And some of them were starting to look elsewhere for salvation.

  104. Some of them had already resigned themselves to perpetual winter.

  105. But then Christmas came, and that's what Luke 2 is all about.

  106. It teaches us that we should believe in Christ the Lord,

  107. who has come to redeem God's people.

  108. And I will talk about the identity of Christ, the fourth phase.

  109. First, Jesus as the Christ, and then Jesus as the Lord, and then the Savior,

  110. and then finally as the Son of God.

  111. In verses 1 to 7, we see his identity as the Christ.

  112. Because in verses 1 to 2, it set the context for this important story.

  113. It says in verses 1 to 2,

  114. In those days, a decree went out from Caesar Augustus

  115. that all the world should be registered.

  116. This was the first registration when Quirinius was governor of Syria.

  117. In those days refers to the time of John the Baptist's birth,

  118. which we just talked about in the previous chapter.

  119. And it was during the reign of Caesar Augustus, also known as Octavian,

  120. who was the first emperor of the Roman Empire.

  121. And he reigned from 27 B.C. to 14 A.B.

  122. And during his reign, he issued a decree that called for the registration of all the world,

  123. meaning the entire Roman world.

  124. It's a generalization, but it's not really that much of an exaggeration,

  125. since the Roman Empire at the time occupied a sprawling territory

  126. from Western Europe to North Africa and the Middle East,

  127. and about 70 million people, which is about a third of the world's population.

  128. And the registration is basically a census.

  129. The world census actually originated in ancient Rome,

  130. and it played a crucial role in Roman governance,

  131. because it facilitated the assessment of taxes

  132. and the conscription of citizens for military service.

  133. So it was the ways in which kings and emperors kind of flexed their proverbial muscles,

  134. giving them an estimate of the extent of their financial and military power.

  135. And due to this mandated registration, verses 3 to 5,

  136. Tal has said all went to be registered, each to his own town,

  137. and Joseph also went up from Galilee from the town of Nazareth,

  138. to Judea, to the city of David, which is called Bethlehem,

  139. because he was of the house and lineage of David,

  140. to be registered with Mary, his betrothed, who was with child.

  141. It seems that the Jews, according to their custom,

  142. were required to go back to their ancestral homeland in order to register.

  143. And so Joseph knew that he lived in the region of Galilee,

  144. in a town of Nazareth.

  145. He had to journey back to Judea, to the city of David,

  146. which is called Bethlehem, because he was of the lineage of David.

  147. And this, of course, is not an incidental detail.

  148. It's important, intentional detail,

  149. because 1 Samuel 17, 12 tells us that now David was a son of an Ephrathite,

  150. of Bethlehem in Judah, named Jesse, who had eight sons.

  151. So, because of the divine promise in 2 Samuel 10,

  152. that the Davidic monarchy would continue forever,

  153. the Old Testament prophecies declared that the Messianic king that would come

  154. would be from the line of David.

  155. And Micah 5, chapter 5, verse 2 prophesied,

  156. But you, O Bethlehem Ephrathah,

  157. who are too little to be among the clans of Judah,

  158. from you shall come forth for me,

  159. one who is to be ruler in Israel,

  160. whose coming forth is from the old, from ancient of days.

  161. And so, even though Jesus was conceived in Mary,

  162. which was still a virgin,

  163. since lineage is traced through the Father,

  164. Jesus is born in the lineage of David,

  165. in Bethlehem, the city of David.

  166. And the implication, of course, is that Jesus is the Davidic king,

  167. the Christ, which means anointed one,

  168. the promised Messiah,

  169. that God's people have been waiting all this time for.

  170. By people, they have known, they have been conquered by the Assyrians,

  171. and then by the Babylonians, the Persians, and the Greeks,

  172. and then finally by the Romans.

  173. And there's seemingly endless subjugation of oppression.

  174. There always winter is about to come to an end.

  175. And the child in Mary's womb is the king who will end that winter and bring Christmas.

  176. And Augustus Caesar, who is only trying to flex his own royal muscles,

  177. unwittingly becomes the pawn of God's sovereign rule

  178. and brings about the fulfillment of this Old Testament prophecy,

  179. that the Messiah will be born in Bethlehem.

  180. He calls for senses to display his power,

  181. and God displays his own power and witness

  182. by bringing about the Messiah through his birth in Bethlehem.

  183. And if the coming of this long-awaited Christ is amazing,

  184. the circumstance of his birth is even more shocking.

  185. Look at verses 6 to 7 with me.

  186. And while they were there, the time came for her to give birth.

  187. And she gave birth to her firstborn son

  188. and wrapped him in swatling cloths

  189. and laid him in a manger

  190. because there was no place for them in the age.

  191. When the contractions start,

  192. you quickly have to make arrangements

  193. for the pregnant woman to give birth

  194. because the baby's birth is imminent.

  195. And inns in the ancient world

  196. usually had two sections.

  197. They had the first section for human occupancy,

  198. and they had a second section for animals,

  199. to house people's animals.

  200. Joseph and Mary needed to find lodging immediately,

  201. but because there was no place for them in the inn,

  202. it says, meaning the guest rooms were already occupied,

  203. they had to settle for a stable

  204. where the animals were usually housed.

  205. Church tradition holds that the stable

  206. was actually a cave,

  207. which was not uncommon in those days.

  208. And the church of the natively now

  209. sits in that site in Bethlehem.

  210. A manger is a box or trough in a stable

  211. from which the cattle eat.

  212. We had to get a privilege of baptizing

  213. a few people a few weeks ago in our church,

  214. and for our baptismal,

  215. we used a horse trough.

  216. I don't know if you guys knew that.

  217. It's never been used as a horse trough.

  218. It's only repurposed as a baptismal,

  219. so it's clean.

  220. But that's kind of what you're looking at.

  221. But this manger in which Jesus is born, however,

  222. is a trough that's in use.

  223. It's dirty, probably smelling.

  224. He's in a stable,

  225. and he has a manger for his cradle.

  226. While Caesar Augustus was busy

  227. counting his subjects

  228. so he could use them

  229. for himself and his kingdom,

  230. Jesus the Christ,

  231. the messianic king,

  232. came to be counted among us,

  233. and he's laid in a manger.

  234. And because of that,

  235. we know he's not like the kings of this world.

  236. He's not like the haughty kings of earth

  237. who are aloof from the cares of common life

  238. and refuse to associate with the lobe.

  239. Christ the king comes to the downtrodden

  240. and the lowly

  241. so that he might lift them up toward God.

  242. And because Christ the king came in a manger,

  243. because he came in weakness,

  244. in lowliness,

  245. he's able to empathize with our lowliness and weakness.

  246. Hebrews chapter 4, 15 to 16,

    Hebrews 4 chapter mention

  247. says this about Christ.

  248. For we do not have a high priest

  249. who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses,

  250. but one who in every respect

  251. has been tempted as we are,

  252. yet without sin.

  253. Let us then,

  254. with confidence,

  255. draw near to the throne of grace,

  256. that we may receive mercy

  257. and find grace

  258. to help in time of the meeting.

  259. Because Christ knows

  260. what it is like to be lowly and weak.

  261. Because Christ knows

  262. what it's like to be born

  263. into a broken and sinful world.

  264. Because of all of that,

  265. because Christ was laid in a manger,

  266. he's able to sympathize with our weaknesses,

  267. and we can be confident

  268. that when we approach him,

  269. we'll receive mercy and grace.

  270. So remember that truth.

  271. This Christmas is in the year to come.

  272. Don't forget for a moment

  273. that your hardships,

  274. your weaknesses,

  275. and your temptations,

  276. that you have to bear them alone.

  277. Christ knows,

  278. Christ sees,

  279. Christ sympathizes with your lowliness,

  280. because he's the manger king.

  281. And then this Jesus,

  282. who is the Christ,

  283. who is also the Lord,

  284. as verse 8 to 20 tells us.

  285. In verse 8,

  286. the scene shifts

  287. from the barn to the field.

  288. It says,

  289. And in the same region

  290. there were shepherds

  291. out in the field

  292. keeping watch

  293. over their flock by night.

  294. And verse 9 continues,

  295. And an angel of the Lord

  296. appeared to them,

  297. and the glory of the Lord

  298. shone around them,

  299. and they were filled

  300. with great fear.

  301. So the fact that this happened

  302. while the shepherds

  303. were keeping night watch

  304. paints kind of a wondrous scene,

  305. because out in the field

  306. in the middle of the night

  307. there would not be

  308. much light at all,

  309. especially in those days

  310. when there's not a lot of,

  311. there's no artificial light.

  312. So, but during this time,

  313. the glory of the Lord

  314. shone around them.

  315. In scripture,

  316. God's glory shines

  317. wherever he makes

  318. his presence felt,

  319. whenever he reveals

  320. his presence to people.

  321. The glory of God

  322. is kind of the sum

  323. of all of the divine attributes.

  324. His holiness,

  325. his beauty,

  326. his power,

  327. it's kind of the manifestation

  328. of Godness,

  329. display of divinity.

  330. And so God's presence

  331. is powerfully being manifest

  332. around the shepherds

  333. in the midst

  334. of a dark night.

  335. And understandably,

  336. shepherds are filled

  337. with great fear

  338. in the presence of God,

  339. but the angel reassured them

  340. in verses 10 to 14

  341. this way,

  342. Fear not,

  343. for behold,

  344. I bring you good news,

  345. a great joy

  346. that will be for all the people.

  347. For unto you

  348. is born this day

  349. in the city of David

  350. a Savior

  351. who is Christ the Lord.

  352. And this will be

  353. a sign for you.

  354. You will find

  355. a baby wrapped

  356. in swaddling cloths

  357. and wine in a manger.

  358. And suddenly

  359. there was with the angel

  360. a multitude of the heavenly hosts

  361. praising God

  362. and saying,

  363. Glory to God in highest

  364. and on earth peace

  365. among those

  366. with whom he is pleased.

  367. Verse 1,

  368. we noted that

  369. in verse 1

  370. we noted that

  371. Jesus was born

  372. during the reign

  373. of Caesar Augustus.

  374. And there's an interesting

  375. parallel with his life

  376. and the things

  377. we hear about his reign.

  378. Because during his reign,

  379. the Greek cities in Asia

  380. had decided to rearrange

  381. their calendar

  382. to begin the year

  383. on Augustus' birthday

  384. due to the claim

  385. that he had been sent

  386. as a savior

  387. to them

  388. to make an end

  389. to all war.

  390. And there are

  391. Greek inscriptions

  392. that archaeologists

  393. have found

  394. from that era

  395. that claim

  396. that Augustus' birth

  397. marks the beginning

  398. of the message

  399. of, quote,

  400. good news

  401. and peace for the Lord.

  402. In fact,

  403. there was an altar

  404. to Augustan peace

  405. that stood in Rome

  406. commemorating

  407. the unchallenged power

  408. and peace

  409. of the Roman Empire.

  410. And given this context,

  411. the language used

  412. in these verses

  413. invite an intentional

  414. comparison.

  415. Who is the real savior?

  416. Who is the real

  417. bringer of good news?

  418. Who brings peace

  419. on earth?

  420. Who establishes

  421. an eternal kingdom?

  422. By all appearances

  423. at this time

  424. of Jesus' birth,

  425. it seems like

  426. the right answer

  427. is Caesar Augustus.

  428. But Luke tells us

  429. that the right answer

  430. is actually

  431. that baby

  432. wrapped in swaddling

  433. cloths

  434. lying in a manger.

  435. And history

  436. has borne out

  437. Luke's testimony.

  438. While the Roman Empire

  439. came to an end

  440. in 476 AD,

  441. the kingdom of God

  442. continues to expand

  443. in and through

  444. the 2,000 year old church.

  445. And Caesar Augustus

  446. brought a political peace

  447. that lasted a short while,

  448. but Christ brings

  449. eternal peace

  450. with God

  451. and through that

  452. with our brothers

  453. and sisters in Christ.

  454. Caesar Augustus

  455. saved his subjects

  456. for a short while

  457. from the ravages of war,

  458. but Christ saves

  459. his people

  460. from sin and death

  461. onto eternal life.

  462. Caesar Augustus

  463. brought good news

  464. for some,

  465. but Christ brings

  466. good news

  467. for all

  468. who would believe.

  469. Okay.

  470. And what is

  471. this good news?

  472. Why is the coming

  473. of Christ

  474. good news?

  475. This is explained

  476. by the three terms

  477. that the angel

  478. uses to describe Jesus.

  479. He says

  480. that he is Savior,

  481. that he is Christ,

  482. and that he is Lord.

  483. And I'll talk about

  484. Jesus' identity

  485. as a Savior

  486. in my next point,

  487. but for now,

  488. Jesus,

  489. he says,

  490. is the Christ,

  491. which means

  492. anointed one,

  493. that he's the Messiah,

  494. and that's not surprising

  495. because we've seen

  496. his Davidic lineage

  497. in the previous passage.

  498. What's surprising,

  499. though,

  500. is the phrase

  501. Christ the Lord.

  502. Because the word

  503. Lord is consistently

  504. used throughout

  505. the Gospel of Luke

  506. to refer to God.

  507. It's really,

  508. it has in its background

  509. the Old Testament

  510. proper name of God,

  511. which is rendered

  512. as the Lord.

  513. This is an audacious

  514. identification.

  515. In the same way

  516. that Elizabeth

  517. earlier in chapter 1,

  518. verse 43,

  519. called Jesus my Lord,

  520. here Jesus

  521. is being identified

  522. with the Lord God,

  523. the creator

  524. of the universe.

  525. Jesus is not only

  526. the Christ,

  527. the Davidic Messiah,

  528. the king sent by God,

  529. he's also the Lord God himself.

  530. And what is the sign

  531. of this good news?

  532. It says in verse 12,

  533. this will be a sign

  534. for you,

  535. you will find a baby

  536. wrapped in sparkling cloths

  537. and lying in a manger.

  538. That's crazy,

  539. right?

  540. Think about it.

  541. The word baby

  542. is used to refer

  543. to the infant Jesus

  544. only twice in all four

  545. of the gospel accounts.

  546. And both of those instances

  547. are in Luke chapter 2.

    Luke 2 chapter mention

  548. And there's something

  549. jarring about that image

  550. because the Lord,

  551. the eternal,

  552. timeless Son of God,

  553. the Word of God,

  554. is born on earth

  555. as a babbling,

  556. crying,

  557. breastfeeding,

  558. diaper-sowing baby.

  559. I hope you get

  560. how mind-blowing that is.

  561. We see Jesus

  562. once again

  563. through this incarnation,

  564. taking on human flesh,

  565. occupying the place

  566. of the weak

  567. and the low.

  568. After this

  569. unidentified angel

  570. makes the announcement,

  571. he's suddenly joined

  572. by a multitude

  573. of the heavenly hosts

  574. of angels,

  575. praising God,

  576. saying,

  577. glory to God

  578. in the highest

  579. and on earth

  580. peace among those

  581. with whom he's pleased.

  582. The highest

  583. is referenced

  584. to the highest

  585. of heavens.

  586. So it's the first half

  587. of the angelicals' praise

  588. described the effect

  589. of Christ coming

  590. in heaven

  591. and the second half

  592. described the effect

  593. of Christ coming

  594. on earth.

  595. In heaven,

  596. God receives glory

  597. and praise

  598. because of Christ

  599. and on earth,

  600. people with whom

  601. God is pleased

  602. receive peace.

  603. And the people

  604. with whom God

  605. is pleased

  606. is a reference

  607. to the kind of people

  608. that were mentioned

  609. earlier in Mary's

  610. song of praise

  611. in chapter 1,

  612. verse 50,

  613. that God's mercy

  614. is for those

  615. who fear him.

  616. God is pleased

  617. with those

  618. who revere

  619. and worship God,

  620. people who humble

  621. themselves before God.

  622. And these are they

  623. who belong to him.

  624. And with them,

  625. God is pleased

  626. and he keeps them peace.

  627. Not peace

  628. in terms of

  629. a ceasefire,

  630. a rest from war,

  631. the peace with God,

  632. which is the key concept

  633. in Luke and Acts.

  634. And note the contrast

  635. between verse 10

  636. and verse 14.

  637. Verse 10 said

  638. that this good news

  639. of great joy

  640. is brought for all

  641. the people,

  642. but God's peace,

  643. it says in verse 14,

  644. will rest only among

  645. those with whom

  646. he is pleased.

  647. The good news

  648. invites all people,

  649. but only those

  650. who humble themselves

  651. and come to God

  652. in faith

  653. will benefit

  654. from that peace.

  655. And this passage

  656. enjoins us to believe

  657. with the examples

  658. of the shepherds

  659. and Mary

  660. because we saw

  661. that the shepherds

  662. in verse 16,

  663. they went with haste

  664. in obedience

  665. to the angels' words,

  666. just like Mary

  667. before them

  668. in chapter 1

  669. went with haste

  670. to Elizabeth

  671. after hearing

  672. the angels' announcement.

  673. And it says,

  674. and it says in Mary

  675. that even though

  676. the crowds

  677. who were there

  678. who heard

  679. the shepherds' views,

  680. they wondered

  681. at what the shepherds

  682. told them,

  683. verses 18 to 19.

  684. It says,

  685. but,

  686. contrast,

  687. but Mary

  688. treasured up

  689. all these things,

  690. pondering them

  691. in her heart.

  692. There's a contrast

  693. there between

  694. the crowds

  695. who wondered

  696. and Mary

  697. who treasured

  698. and pondered.

  699. The announcement

  700. that the baby

  701. in a manger

  702. is a Savior

  703. who is Christ the Lord,

  704. it piqued

  705. the crowd's interest.

  706. Who wouldn't be

  707. interested in hearing

  708. something like that?

  709. It tickled their ears,

  710. but it did not

  711. pierce their hearts.

  712. So they moved on

  713. with their lives.

  714. But Mary,

  715. on the other hand,

  716. it says,

  717. she did not move on.

  718. She treasured up

  719. all these things,

  720. pondering them

  721. in her heart.

  722. Some of you

  723. are visiting us

  724. because this is

  725. a Christmas service.

  726. And some of you

  727. are not yet a follower

  728. of Jesus Christ.

  729. But regardless of why

  730. you came in here

  731. this morning,

  732. which is the good news

  733. that you are hearing now,

  734. the good news,

  735. the same news

  736. that the shepherds

  737. announced,

  738. that the angel announced

  739. is what you're hearing

  740. now,

  741. the same message.

  742. How will you respond

  743. to this good news?

  744. Will you be like

  745. the people in Bethlehem

  746. who merely wandered

  747. and then moved on

  748. with their lives?

  749. Or will you be like

  750. Mary who treasured

  751. these things

  752. and pondered them

  753. in her heart?

  754. Will you respond

  755. with faith

  756. and obedience?

  757. The scene shifts

  758. once again

  759. in verses 21-40

  760. this time to the temple

  761. where we see

  762. Jesus' identity

  763. as the Savior.

  764. It says in verses

  765. 21-24,

  766. and at the end

  767. of eight days

  768. when he was circumcised

  769. he was called

  770. Jesus,

  771. the name given

  772. by the angel

  773. before he was conceived

  774. in the womb.

  775. And when the time

  776. came for their purification

  777. according to the law

  778. of Moses,

  779. they brought him

  780. up to Jerusalem

  781. to present him

  782. to the Lord

  783. as it is written

  784. in the law

  785. of the Lord.

  786. Every male

  787. who first opens

  788. the womb

  789. shall be called

  790. holy to the Lord

  791. and to offer

  792. a sacrifice

  793. according to

  794. what is sent

  795. in the law

  796. of the Lord.

  797. A pair of turtle doves

  798. or two young people.

  799. We saw earlier

  800. in verse 11

  801. the angel

  802. called Jesus

  803. a Savior

  804. and the name

  805. Jesus

  806. given here

  807. according to

  808. the angel's

  809. announcement

  810. means the Lord

  811. saves.

  812. And there are

  813. two specific reasons

  814. why Joseph and Mary

  815. traveled to the temple

  816. in Jerusalem

  817. with baby Jesus

  818. and they both

  819. have something to do

  820. with the Old Testament law.

  821. The first purpose

  822. is this,

  823. the purification

  824. according to

  825. the law of Moses.

  826. Due to the discharge

  827. of blood

  828. during the birth

  829. a woman with a second birth

  830. was required

  831. by the Old Testament law

  832. to go through

  833. a ceremony

  834. of purification

  835. in Leviticus

    Leviticus 12 chapter mention

  836. chapter 12.

  837. And according to

  838. Leviticus chapter 12

    Leviticus 12:6–8

  839. verses 6 to 8

  840. the purification ritual

  841. required two sacrifices.

  842. The sacrifices

  843. of a male lamb

  844. a year old

  845. for a burnt offering

  846. and a pigeon

  847. or a turtle dove

  848. for a sin offering.

  849. But it's specified

  850. that in the event

  851. that the woman

  852. and her husband

  853. cannot afford

  854. a male lamb

  855. a year old

  856. for burnt offering

  857. they could

  858. substitute

  859. with the

  860. substitute

  861. the lamb

  862. by using

  863. two turtle doves

  864. or two pigeons

  865. instead.

  866. And that's actually

  867. what Joseph and Mary

  868. do here

  869. which shows us

  870. that they were

  871. not well off.

  872. They could not afford

  873. a male lamb

  874. a year old

  875. so they substitute

  876. a pigeon

  877. or a turtle dove.

  878. They bring the poor

  879. people's offering

  880. to God

  881. and that's the first

  882. purpose.

  883. That's purification.

  884. The second purpose

  885. was to present

  886. Jesus to the Lord

  887. as it is written

  888. in the law

  889. of the Lord

  890. to every male

  891. who first opens

  892. the womb

  893. shall be called

  894. holy to the Lord

  895. meaning set apart

  896. for the Lord

  897. and to offer

  898. sacrifice according

  899. to what is said

  900. in the law

  901. of the Lord.

  902. So in Exodus 13

  903. God said that

  904. every firstborn male

  905. in Israel

  906. belongs to him.

  907. Every firstborn male

  908. animal

  909. had to be

  910. sacrificed

  911. to the Lord

  912. and every firstborn

  913. son

  914. had to be

  915. redeemed

  916. for the redemption

  917. price of five shekels

  918. specified in Numbers

    Numbers 18 chapter mention

  919. chapter 18.

  920. So this requirement

  921. was in commemoration

  922. of the Passover

  923. when God struck down

  924. the Egyptians

  925. by killing all

  926. the firstborn sons

  927. of the Egyptians

  928. and all their

  929. firstborn male animals

  930. because Pharaohs

  931. stubbornly refused

  932. to let God's people

  933. Israel go

  934. from their slavery.

  935. And there's

  936. this kind of

  937. retributive justice here

  938. because in Exodus

    Exodus 4 chapter mention

  939. chapter 4.22

  940. and elsewhere

  941. God calls Israel

  942. his people

  943. my firstborn son.

  944. And so Egypt's

  945. firstborn sons

  946. are struck down

  947. for enslaving

  948. God's firstborn son.

  949. And that concept

  950. of the firstborn son

  951. is important

  952. of course because

  953. of the right

  954. of inheritance

  955. in this culture.

  956. By virtue of being

  957. the firstborn son

  958. Jesus belonged to God

  959. and since God

  960. explicitly prohibits

  961. child sacrifice

  962. he makes a provision

  963. for the redemption

  964. of the firstborn son

  965. instead

  966. through the payment

  967. of a ransom

  968. price.

  969. And all of these

  970. rituals and sacrifices

  971. serve as signs

  972. that prefigure

  973. the coming

  974. of Jesus Christ

  975. because he's

  976. described in

  977. Colossians chapter 1

    Colossians 1:15

  978. verse 15

  979. as the firstborn

  980. of all creation.

  981. That's who Jesus is.

  982. That does not mean

  983. that Jesus was

  984. the first being

  985. ever created

  986. by God.

  987. It's referring

  988. to his right

  989. of inheritance

  990. because Jesus

  991. is an uncreated being.

  992. He's the second person

  993. of the Trinity

  994. as John chapter 1

    John 1:1–3

  995. verse 1 to 3

  996. made clear.

  997. But he is the

  998. firstborn of all creation

  999. meaning that he lays

  1000. claim on all creation

  1001. as an inheritance

  1002. because he is

  1003. the son of God.

  1004. But Jesus

  1005. and so this is

  1006. Jesus the firstborn son

  1007. and then according

  1008. to John 1 29

  1009. Jesus is also

  1010. the lamb of God

  1011. who takes away

1012. the sin of the world.

  1013. He's the Passover lamb

  1014. sacrificed

  1015. for us.

  1016. So to a couple

  1017. that cannot afford

  1018. to sacrifice

  1019. the male lamb

  1020. for purification

  1021. and therefore

  1022. must substitute

  1023. a pigeon

  1024. or a turtle

  1025. to them

  1026. comes

  1027. the lamb

  1028. of God

  1029. who will die

  1030. as the atoning

  1031. sacrifice

  1032. the ultimate

  1033. substitute

  1034. for our

  1035. purification.

  1036. Joseph and Mary

  1037. present Jesus

  1038. at the temple

  1039. and pay

  1040. his redemption

  1041. price

  1042. and the ransom

  1043. that they pay

  1044. points to

  1045. the ultimate

  1046. ransom

  1047. that God

  1048. himself pays

  1049. with the death

  1050. of his one

  1051. and only son

  1052. Jesus Christ

  1053. to redeem

  1054. his people

  1055. from slavery

  1056. to sin and death.

  1057. That's why Jesus

  1058. describes his own

  1059. mission this way

  1060. in Mark 10 45

  1061. the son of man

  1062. came not to be

  1063. served but to serve

  1064. and to give his

  1065. life as a ransom

  1066. for many.

  1067. Because Jesus

  1068. died on the cross

  1069. for our sins

1070. as the son of God

  1071. we can be spared

  1072. as God's people

  1073. and become adopted

  1074. children of God.

  1075. That's how Jesus

  1076. is the savior.

  1077. He saves others

  1078. by not sparing

  1079. himself.

  1080. He delivers

  1081. others by

  1082. delivering himself

  1083. over to be

  1084. crucified in the

  1085. hands of sin.

  1086. In verses 25

  1087. to 28

  1088. a man named

  1089. Simeon enters

  1090. the scene

  1091. and corroborates

  1092. this.

  1093. Verse 25

  1094. says that Simeon

  1095. was righteous

  1096. and devout

  1097. waiting for the

  1098. consolation of

  1099. Israel and the

  1100. Holy Spirit

  1101. was upon him

  1102. and God

  1103. had promised

  1104. this man

  1105. that he would

  1106. not die

  1107. until he had

  1108. seen with his

  1109. eyes the

  1110. Lord's Christ.

  1111. And this man

  1112. who had been

  1113. waiting and looking

  1114. out for the

  1115. Lord's Christ

  1116. of course

  1117. recognizes him

  1118. immediately

  1119. when baby

  1120. Jesus is brought

  1121. into the temple

  1122. to be presented

  1123. for redemption.

  1124. And he's quite

  1125. eager.

  1126. Hopefully he asks

  1127. for permission

  1128. but he takes

  1129. the baby

  1130. Jesus up in

  1131. his arms

  1132. and lifts

  1133. him up

  1134. and he

  1135. praises God

  1136. this way

  1137. in verses

  1138. 29 to 32.

  1139. Lord

  1140. now you are

  1141. letting your

  1142. servant

  1143. depart

  1144. in peace

  1145. according to

  1146. your word

  1147. where my

  1148. eyes have

  1149. seen

  1150. your salvation

  1151. that you have

  1152. prepared in the

  1153. presence of

  1154. all peoples

  1155. a life for

  1156. revelation to

  1157. the Gentiles

  1158. and for glory

  1159. to your people

  1160. Israel.

  1161. Seeing the

  1162. Lord's Christ

  1163. in verse 26

  1164. parallels my

  1165. eyes have seen

  1166. your salvation

  1167. in verse 30.

  1168. The Lord's

  1169. Christ is

  1170. the salvation.

  1171. So seeing

  1172. salvation

  1173. he sees

  1174. salvation

  1175. when he sees

  1176. the Lord's

  1177. Christ.

  1178. And Jesus

  1179. because he is

  1180. the salvation

  1181. he will be

  1182. a light for

  1183. revelation

  1184. for Gentiles

  1185. and for glory

  1186. to God's

  1187. people Israel.

  1188. Christ brings

  1189. light to Gentiles

  1190. who live in

  1191. darkness

  1192. and this will

  1193. be for Israel's

  1194. glory because

  1195. Christ is the

  1196. Lord the

  1197. Savior he came

  1198. from among

  1199. them.

  1200. He was one of

  1201. them.

  1202. Sometimes people

  1203. dismiss the Old

  1204. Testament as being

  1205. narrow and

  1206. ethnocentric

  1207. but right from

  1208. the beginning

  1209. from the book

  1210. of Genesis

  1211. and onward

  1212. God says

  1213. repeatedly that

  1214. eventually

  1215. ultimately the

  1216. salvation plan

  1217. is for all

  1218. the nations.

  1219. The reason why

  1220. the Jewish nation

  1221. has such a

  1222. prominent place

  1223. in God's

  1224. redemption

  1225. history in

  1226. the Old

  1227. Testament

  1228. is because

  1229. it's from

  1230. them among

  1231. the Jewish

  1232. people that

  1233. Christ the

  1234. Lord will be

  1235. born who

  1236. brings salvation

  1237. to all

  1238. nations.

  1239. He is the

  1240. Davidic king

  1241. the Savior

  1242. of the Lord.

  1243. And having

  1244. praise God

  1245. for the

  1246. birth of

  1247. Jesus,

  1248. Simeon has

  1249. a specific

  1250. word for

  1251. Mary in

  1252. verse 34

  1253. 35.

  1254. Behold,

  1255. this child is

  1256. appointed for

  1257. the fall and

  1258. rising of

  1259. many in

  1260. Israel and

  1261. for a sign

  1262. that is

  1263. opposed.

  1264. And a

  1265. sword will

  1266. pierce through

  1267. your own

  1268. soul also,

  1269. so that

  1270. thoughts from

  1271. many hearts

  1272. may be

  1273. healed.

  1274. It was

  1275. prophesied in

  1276. Isaiah 8,

  1277. 14-15,

  1278. and Isaiah

  1279. 28-16,

  1280. that the

  1281. Messiah would

  1282. be a rock.

  1283. He would be

  1284. a rock that

  1285. causes some

  1286. people to

  1287. stumble,

  1288. but he will

  1289. also be a

  1290. rock that

  1291. serves as a

  1292. precious

  1293. cornerstone of

  1294. a sure

  1295. foundation for

  1296. others.

  1297. For those

  1298. who reject

  1299. Christ, he

  1300. will be the

  1301. rock of

  1302. stumbling that

  1303. caused them

  1304. to fall,

  1305. but for

  1306. those who

  1307. receive him

  1308. in faith,

  1309. Christ will

  1310. be the

  1311. precious

  1312. cornerstone

  1313. that supports

  1314. them up.

  1315. Jesus'

  1316. coming is

  1317. such an

  1318. earth-shattering

  1319. event, such

  1320. a history-defying

  1321. event, that

  1322. his identity

  1323. and ministry

  1324. divide the

  1325. whole world

  1326. into two

  1327. parts.

  1328. Everybody is

  1329. defined according

  1330. to God by

  1331. how they relate

  1332. to Jesus

  1333. Christ.

  1334. And as

  1335. Jesus does

  1336. this, as he

  1337. divides the

  1338. world through

  1339. his ministry,

  1340. Simeon notes,

  1341. a sword will

  1342. pierce through

  1343. Mary's own

  1344. sword also.

  1345. The word

  1346. sword refers

  1347. to a large

  1348. and broad

  1349. double-edged

  1350. sword, which

  1351. makes this

  1352. image quite

  1353. graphic.

  1354. It's referring

  1355. to sharp

  1356. emotional

  1357. pain that

  1358. Mary will

  1359. experience as

  1360. a result of

  1361. Jesus' life

  1362. and ministry.

  1363. And of

  1364. course, that

  1365. pain comes

  1366. to a

  1367. climax in

  1368. Jesus'

  1369. crucifixion

  1370. when Mary,

  1371. according to

  1372. John 1925,

  1373. is looking at

  1374. him, watching

  1375. him in the

  1376. presence of

  1377. his son,

  1378. her son's,

  1379. crucifixion.

  1380. That's the

  1381. cost of

  1382. bearing the

  1383. son of

  1384. God, who

  1385. properly

  1386. belongs not

  1387. to her, but

  1388. to the

  1389. Lord.

  1390. And after

  1391. Simeon, a

  1392. prophetess named

  1393. Anna also

  1394. comes up, we

  1395. have a lot of

  1396. actually Annas in

  1397. our church.

  1398. And Anna is

  1399. a godly woman,

  1400. a devoted

  1401. person like

  1402. Simeon.

  1403. before the

  1404. death and

  1405. resurrection of

  1406. Christ and

  1407. the subsequent

  1408. outcome of

  1409. the Spirit,

  1410. actually only

  1411. five women

  1412. out in

  1413. Scripture,

  1414. before the

  1415. coming of

  1416. the Spirit,

  1417. are described

  1418. as true

  1419. prophetess.

  1420. Only five

  1421. in the Old

  1422. Testament and

  1423. here.

  1424. Miriam,

  1425. Deborah,

  1426. Koda,

  1427. Isaiah's

  1428. unnamed

  1429. wife, and

  1430. lastly, Anna.

  1431. So Anna is

  1432. a special

  1433. vessel of

  1434. God's

  1435. revelation.

  1436. And she

  1437. was so

  1438. devoted that

  1439. instead of

  1440. remarrying after

  1441. being widowed

  1442. after a short

  1443. few years,

  1444. she remained

  1445. the widow

  1446. until she

  1447. was 84,

  1448. worshipping with

  1449. fasting and

  1450. prayer daily in

  1451. the temple,

  1452. giving her

  1453. life exclusively

  1454. to the service

  1455. of God.

  1456. And this

  1457. godly and

  1458. reliable

  1459. prophetess of

  1460. the Lord,

  1461. after seeing

  1462. Jesus,

  1463. began to

  1464. give thanks

  1465. to God

  1466. and speak

  1467. of Him

  1468. to all

  1469. who were

  1470. waiting for

  1471. the redemption

  1472. of Jerusalem.

  1473. He's the

  1474. long-awaitest

  1475. Savior that

  1476. is to come.

  1477. And then

  1478. in the last

  1479. section,

  1480. verses 41 to

  1481. 52,

  1482. we move

  1483. past Jesus'

  1484. infancy to

  1485. an account

  1486. from Jesus'

  1487. boyhood,

  1488. which teaches

  1489. that Jesus

  1490. is also the

  1491. Son of

  1492. God.

  1493. As faithful

  1494. Jews,

  1495. Jesus'

  1496. parents went

  1497. to Jerusalem

  1498. every year

  1499. at the

  1500. feast of

  1501. the Passover,

  1502. and on

  1503. one such

  1504. occasion,

  1505. when Jesus

  1506. was 12

  1507. years old,

  1508. as the

  1509. family made

  1510. a return

  1511. trip from

  1512. Jerusalem,

  1513. verses 43

  1514. to 45

  1515. follows this,

  1516. the boy

  1517. Jesus stayed

  1518. behind in

  1519. Jerusalem,

  1520. his parents

  1521. did not know

  1522. it,

  1523. but supposing

  1524. him to be

  1525. in the

  1526. group,

  1527. they went

  1528. a day's

  1529. journey,

  1530. but then

  1531. they began

  1532. to search

  1533. for him

  1534. among their

  1535. relatives and

  1536. acquaintances,

  1537. and when

  1538. they did not

  1539. find him,

  1540. they returned

  1541. to Jerusalem

  1542. searching for him.

  1543. So for these

  1544. kinds of

  1545. major trips,

  1546. it was common

  1547. for an entire

  1548. village to travel

  1549. together,

  1550. so they would

  1551. have quite the

  1552. wedding,

  1553. Joseph and Mary

  1554. would be

  1555. accompanied by

  1556. their extended

  1557. family as well

  1558. as their

  1559. neighbors from

  1560. the village

  1561. of Nazareth,

  1562. and this is

  1563. why,

  1564. even though

  1565. Jesus wasn't

  1566. with them

  1567. during the

  1568. first day's

  1569. journey,

  1570. Joseph and

  1571. Mary kind

  1572. of assumed

  1573. that he

  1574. was in

  1575. the group

  1576. somewhere,

  1577. and so

  1578. they didn't

  1579. worry too

  1580. much,

  1581. but then at

  1582. the end

  1583. of the day,

  1584. when everyone

  1585. gets together

  1586. again to settle

  1587. down for the

  1588. night,

  1589. Joseph and

  1590. Mary discover

  1591. that Jesus

  1592. is not in

  1593. the group,

  1594. so they

  1595. frantically

  1596. search for

  1597. him,

  1598. and eventually

  1599. return to

  1600. Jerusalem

  1601. in search

  1602. of him,

  1603. and they

  1604. find something

  1605. astonishing in

  1606. verse 46,

  1607. it says,

  1608. after three

  1609. days,

  1610. they find

  1611. him in

  1612. the temple,

  1613. sitting among

  1614. the teachers,

  1615. listening to

  1616. them and

  1617. asking them

  1618. questions.

  1619. It was

  1620. common for

  1621. Jewish teachers

  1622. of the law

  1623. to be surrounded

  1624. by students

  1625. who sat by

  1626. their feet

  1627. to receive

  1628. instruction,

  1629. so the

  1630. technical way

  1631. to describe

  1632. that relationship

  1633. is for them

  1634. to sit before

  1635. the teacher's

  1636. feet,

  1637. as it says

  1638. in Acts 22

  1639. 3,

  1640. but that

  1641. typical scene

  1642. is kind of

  1643. mixed up here

  1644. in verse 46,

  1645. because Jesus

  1646. is not sitting

  1647. before the

  1648. teachers' feet,

  1649. he says he's

  1650. sitting among

  1651. the teachers,

  1652. listening to

  1653. them and

  1654. questioning them.

  1655. In verse 47,

  1656. it says,

  1657. and all who

  1658. heard him

  1659. were amazed

  1660. at his

  1661. understanding

  1662. and his

  1663. answers.

  1664. The word

  1665. understanding

  1666. here refers

  1667. to penetrated

  1668. insight.

  1669. Jesus is

  1670. a full

  1671. conversational

  1672. partner

  1673. with these

  1674. teachers of

  1675. the law,

  1676. and in fact,

  1677. he dazzles

  1678. them with

  1679. his own

  1680. penetrating

  1681. insights,

  1682. his understanding

  1683. and his

  1684. answers to

  1685. the questions

  1686. and problems

  1687. that they

  1688. pose.

  1689. And finding

  1690. Jesus sitting

  1691. casually among

  1692. the teachers

  1693. and conversing

  1694. with them

  1695. is understandably

  1696. upsetting to

  1697. the parents

  1698. who have

  1699. been searching

  1700. practically for

  1701. them for

  1702. three days.

  1703. So Mary

  1704. scolds them

  1705. in verse 48,

  1706. Son,

  1707. why have

  1708. you treated

  1709. us so?

  1710. Behold,

  1711. your father

  1712. and I

  1713. have been

  1714. searching for

  1715. you in

  1716. great distress.

  1717. But if they

  1718. were astounded

  1719. earlier,

  1720. Jesus' response

  1721. floors them

  1722. in verse 49,

  1723. Why were

  1724. you looking

  1725. for me?

  1726. Did you

  1727. not know

  1728. that I

  1729. must be

  1730. in my

  1731. father's

  1732. house?

  1733. If Jesus

  1734. weren't really

  1735. the son of

  1736. God,

  1737. if this

  1738. weren't true,

  1739. this would

  1740. be like the

  1741. height of

  1742. insolence,

  1743. right?

  1744. How dare

  1745. you,

  1746. child,

  1747. talk to me

  1748. this way,

  1749. but that

  1750. because he

  1751. is the

  1752. son of

  1753. God,

  1754. this is

  1755. true.

  1756. And look

  1757. at the

  1758. contrast

  1759. between

  1760. verse 48

  1761. and verse

  1762. 49.

  1763. In verse

  1764. 48,

  1765. Mary addresses

  1766. Jesus as

  1767. son,

  1768. and then

  1769. she

  1770. emphasizes

  1771. your

  1772. father and

  1773. I have

  1774. been looking

  1775. for you.

  1776. And Jesus'

  1777. response

  1778. directly answers

  1779. that.

  1780. Why are you

  1781. surprised?

  1782. Do you not

  1783. know that I

  1784. must be in

  1785. my father's

  1786. house?

  1787. He's been

  1788. in his

  1789. father's

  1790. house this

  1791. whole time.

  1792. This reveals

  1793. Jesus'

  1794. self-awareness

  1795. and identity

  1796. and purpose,

  1797. his priority.

  1798. He must

  1799. be in

  1800. his

  1801. father's

  1802. house.

  1803. It's a

  1804. necessity

  1805. placed upon

  1806. him through

  1807. his true

  1808. identity as

  1809. the son

  1810. of God.

  1811. Biologically,

  1812. as a human

  1813. being,

  1814. Jesus is

  1815. the son of

  1816. Mary.

  1817. Genealogically,

  1818. Joseph is

  1819. Jesus'

  1820. father.

  1821. But spiritually,

  1822. internally,

  1823. Jesus is the

  1824. son of God.

  1825. God.

  1826. This is such a

  1827. bold statement

  1828. that Joseph

  1829. and Mary

  1830. are taken

  1831. aback.

  1832. They don't

  1833. quite even

  1834. understand what

  1835. Jesus means

  1836. by this.

  1837. And nevertheless,

  1838. verse 41 tells

  1839. us that in

  1840. spite of his

  1841. identity as the

  1842. son of God,

  1843. Jesus was

  1844. submissive to

  1845. his earthly

  1846. parents.

  1847. And Mary,

  1848. once again,

  1849. treasured up all

  1850. these things in

  1851. her heart.

  1852. You can see

  1853. Jesus' growth and

  1854. progression in

  1855. this chapter by

  1856. looking at what

  1857. words are used

  1858. to describe him,

  1859. to call him.

  1860. Because verse

  1861. 52 provides

  1862. another growth

  1863. chart for

  1864. child genes for

  1865. us.

  1866. It says,

  1867. And Jesus

  1868. increased in

  1869. wisdom and

  1870. in stature and

  1871. in favor with

  1872. God and

  1873. men.

  1874. In this

  1875. chapter,

  1876. Jesus has

  1877. gone from

  1878. being a

  1879. baby in

  1880. verse 16

  1881. to a

  1882. child in

  1883. verse 40

  1884. to a

  1885. boy in

  1886. verse 43.

  1887. And finally

  1888. here in

  1889. verse 52,

  1890. he simply

  1891. referred to

  1892. by his

  1893. name,

  1894. Jesus.

  1895. And this

  1896. is a

  1897. noteworthy

  1898. statement that

  1899. reveals Jesus'

  1900. nature as

  1901. being both

  1902. fully God

  1903. and fully

  1904. man,

  1905. because it

  1906. says that

  1907. he increased

  1908. in three

  1909. categories,

  1910. wisdom,

  1911. stature,

  1912. and favor.

  1913. Jesus grew

  1914. mentally,

  1915. physically,

  1916. and morally

  1917. in terms of

  1918. the favorable

  1919. moral standing

  1920. he had before

  1921. God and

  1922. men.

  1923. Jesus did

  1924. not have

  1925. all of

  1926. these things

  1927. in fullness

  1928. from the

  1929. beginning.

  1930. He increased

  1931. in them.

  1932. Jesus is

  1933. fully the

  1934. Son of

  1935. God,

  1936. but in

  1937. his full

  1938. identity as

  1939. Son of

  1940. Man,

  1941. he grew

  1942. and he

  1943. increased

  1944. in these

  1945. things.

  1946. His divine

  1947. nature and

  1948. his human

  1949. nature are

  1950. united

  1951. separately and

  1952. eternally in

  1953. the person

  1954. of Jesus

  1955. Christ.

  1956. And throughout

  1957. this entire

  1958. chapter,

  1959. we've seen

  1960. the greatness

  1961. of Jesus

  1962. according to

  1963. heaven's

  1964. estimation,

  1965. salvation,

  1966. put right

  1967. next to

  1968. side-by-side

  1969. with his

  1970. lowliness

  1971. from an

  1972. earthy

  1973. perspective.

  1974. And if

  1975. you are

  1976. ready to

  1977. follow Christ,

  1978. brothers and

  1979. sisters,

  1980. this is

  1981. your calling

  1982. as well.

  1983. Because if

  1984. you wish to

  1985. follow Jesus

  1986. Christ,

  1987. the path that

  1988. we too must

  1989. follow to the

  1990. greatness that

  1991. he has is

  1992. the path to

  1993. lowliness.

  1994. To reach

  1995. glory, the

  1996. Christian must

  1997. walk through

  1998. the path of

  1999. humility.

  2000. Philippians

    Philippians 2 chapter mention

  2001. chapter 2,

  2002. 3-8 puts

  2003. it this way,

  2004. do nothing

  2005. from selfish

  2006. ambition or

  2007. conceit, but

  2008. in humility

  2009. count others

  2010. more significant

  2011. than yourselves.

  2012. Let each of

  2013. you look not

  2014. only to his

  2015. own interests,

  2016. but also to

  2017. the interests

  2018. of others.

  2019. Have this

  2020. mind among

  2021. yourselves,

  2022. which is

  2023. yours in

  2024. Christ Jesus,

  2025. who, though

  2026. he was in

  2027. the form of

  2028. God, did

  2029. not count

  2030. equality with

  2031. God a thing

  2032. to be grasped,

  2033. but emptied

  2034. himself, taking

  2035. the form of

  2036. a servant,

  2037. being born in

  2038. the likeness of

  2039. man, and

  2040. being found in

  2041. human form, he

  2042. humbled himself

  2043. by becoming

  2044. obedient to the

  2045. point of death,

  2046. even death on

  2047. a cross.

  2048. Christ established

  2049. the pattern in

  2050. which we are to

  2051. walk.

  2052. So don't pretend

  2053. like you have

  2054. everything put

  2055. together.

  2056. Share your

  2057. weakness with

  2058. your fellow

  2059. Christian brothers

  2060. and sisters.

  2061. confess your

  2062. sins to one

  2063. another.

  2064. Don't try to

  2065. go in alone

  2066. trying to earn

  2067. salvation with

  2068. your own moral

  2069. living, self-righteousness.

  2070. Instead, renounce

  2071. your self-righteousness

  2072. and cling to

  2073. Christ's righteousness

  2074. alone for

  2075. salvation.

  2076. Don't live to

  2077. advance your own

  2078. interests.

  2079. Look to the

  2080. interests of

  2081. others as

  2082. Christ sacrificed

  2083. for you.

  2084. Humble yourself

  2085. before others.

  2086. Don't lift

  2087. yourself up by

  2088. bringing others

  2089. down with

  2090. your words.

  2091. Count others

  2092. more significant

  2093. than yourself.

  2094. If you're not

  2095. yet a follower

  2096. of Christ,

  2097. this Christmas

  2098. is also an

  2099. invitation to

  2100. you.

  2101. 1 Timothy

    1 Timothy 2:5

  2102. chapter 2

  2103. verse 5

  2104. says,

  2105. For there is

  2106. one God

  2107. and there is

  2108. one mediator

  2109. between God

  2110. and man,

  2111. the man

  2112. Christ Jesus.

  2113. All of

  2114. humanity

  2115. rebelled

  2116. against God

  2117. and sinned

  2118. against Him

  2119. by resorting

  2120. to living

  2121. according to

  2122. their own

  2123. wills rather

  2124. than following

  2125. the will of

  2126. God.

  2127. And the

  2128. just penalty

  2129. for that

  2130. treason is

  2131. eternal man.

  2132. Because God

  2133. who was the

  2134. defended party

  2135. is an eternal

  2136. king.

  2137. Someone of

  2138. eternal

  2139. will.

  2140. And this is

  2141. too high a

  2142. price for any

  2143. man to

  2144. afford.

  2145. That's why

  2146. Psalm 49

  2147. 7-8 says

  2148. that truly

  2149. a man,

  2150. no man,

  2151. can ransom

  2152. another or

  2153. give to God

  2154. the price of

  2155. his life.

  2156. For the

  2157. ransom of

  2158. their life

  2159. is costly

  2160. and can

  2161. never

  2162. suffice.

  2163. Only God

  2164. can pay

  2165. to bear

  2166. the ransom

  2167. price of

  2168. a man's

  2169. life.

  2170. And yet

  2171. man,

  2172. humankind

  2173. must bear

  2174. the punishment

  2175. because man

  2176. is responsible.

  2177. Hebrews 2-14-18

  2178. tells that

  2179. because God's

  2180. people were

  2181. of flesh

  2182. and blood

  2183. that Christ

  2184. too had to

  2185. be made

  2186. like us

  2187. to take on

  2188. flesh and

  2189. blood

  2190. so that in

  2191. every respect

  2192. He might be

  2193. able to make

  2194. propitiation

  2195. for the sins

  2196. of His people.

  2197. That's why

  2198. Christ alone

  2199. is the

  2200. sufficient

  2201. Savior

  2202. because He

  2203. is both

  2204. the Son

  2205. of God

  2206. and the

  2207. Son of

  2208. Man.

  2209. He's the

  2210. one mediator

  2211. between God

  2212. and man.

  2213. And the

  2214. only way

  2215. to be saved

  2216. is to

  2217. entrust

  2218. yourself

  2219. to Him.

  2220. I begin

  2221. with an

  2222. illustration

  2223. from the

  2224. first book

  2225. in C.S.

  2226. Lewis'

  2227. series,

  2228. Chronicles of

  2229. Narnia.

  2230. And in

  2231. the last

  2232. book of

  2233. the series,

  2234. The Last

  2235. Battle,

  2236. when the

  2237. last great

  2238. battle is

  2239. being waged

  2240. for the

  2241. fate of

  2242. Narnia,

  2243. the last

  2244. king,

  2245. Tyrion and

  2246. all his

  2247. loyal servants

  2248. are forced

  2249. to make

  2250. a last

  2251. stand

  2252. against

  2253. the

  2254. enemies.

  2255. And they're

  2256. forced into

  2257. a small

  2258. stable on

  2259. top of

  2260. a hill.

  2261. And Tyrion

  2262. is amazed

  2263. to discover

  2264. that this

  2265. small stable

  2266. is actually

  2267. a portal

  2268. to another

  2269. world.

  2270. And this

  2271. is what he

  2272. says.

  2273. This is what

  2274. the book

  2275. says.

  2276. Tyrion

  2277. looked round

  2278. and again

  2279. and could

  2280. hardly

  2281. believe his

  2282. eyes.

  2283. There was

  2284. the blue

  2285. sky overhead

  2286. and grassy

  2287. country spreading

  2288. as far as

  2289. he could

  2290. see in

  2291. every direction

  2292. and his

  2293. new friends

  2294. all around

  2295. him laughing.

  2296. It seems

  2297. then,

  2298. said Tyrion,

  2299. smiling

  2300. himself,

  2301. that the

  2302. stable seen

  2303. from within

  2304. and the

  2305. stable seen

  2306. from without

  2307. are two

  2308. different

  2309. places.

  2310. Yes,

  2311. said the

  2312. Lord

  2313. Diggory,

  2314. its

  2315. inside is

  2316. bigger than

  2317. its outside.

  2318. Yes,

  2319. said Queen

  2320. Lucy,

  2321. in our

  2322. world too,

  2323. a stable

  2324. once had

  2325. something inside

  2326. it that

  2327. was bigger

  2328. than our

  2329. whole world.

  2330. That's the

  2331. mystery and

  2332. wonder of

  2333. Christmas,

  2334. that once a

  2335. stable held

  2336. something that

  2337. was bigger

  2338. than our

  2339. whole world.

  2340. That Christ

  2341. the Lord

  2342. came to

  2343. redeem God's

  2344. people.

  2345. In the

  2346. human,

  2347. as a

  2348. human

  2349. being,

  2350. this

  2351. manger

  2352. king,

  2353. king in

  2354. the

  2355. manger,

  2356. this is

  2357. God's

  2358. plan for

  2359. salvation.

  2360. Dietrich

  2361. Bonhoeffer

  2362. comments on

  2363. this reality

  2364. in his book,

  2365. God is in

  2366. the manger.

  2367. He asks,

  2368. who among

  2369. us will

  2370. celebrate

  2371. Christmas

  2372. correctly?

  2373. Whoever

  2374. finally lays

  2375. down all

  2376. power,

  2377. all honor,

  2378. all reputation,

  2379. all vanity,

  2380. all arrogance,

  2381. all individualism

  2382. beside the

  2383. manger,

  2384. whoever remains

  2385. lowly and

  2386. lets God

  2387. alone be

  2388. high,

  2389. whoever looks

  2390. at the

  2391. child in

  2392. the manger

  2393. and sees

  2394. the glory

  2395. of God

  2396. precisely in

  2397. his

  2398. lowliness,

  2399. they are

  2400. those who

  2401. will celebrate

  2402. Christmas

  2403. properly.

  2404. So lay

  2405. aside your

  2406. tribes,

  2407. self-righteousness

  2408. and humbly

  2409. submit yourself

  2410. to the

  2411. king whose

  2412. cradle was

  2413. the manger

  2414. and whose

  2415. throne is

  2416. the cross.

  2417. Then and

  2418. only then

  2419. you will

  2420. celebrate

  2421. Christmas

  2422. correctly.

  2423. Let's

  2424. reflect on

  2425. this truth

  2426. a moment

  2427. and I'll

  2428. work it out.

  2429. For a few

  2430. moments we'll

  2431. respond by

  2432. praying a lot

  2433. to you.
