  1. and then read the passage for today.

  2. Dear God, thank you for today.

  3. Thank you for bringing us all here.

  4. We pray, God, that as we read, as your word is read and preached, oh God,

  5. that you would just speak to us individually, God.

  6. Lord, we know that your word is alive and active, God.

  7. We pray that, yeah, we would really see you and know you

  8. and that your truth, oh God, would be made alive in our lives today.

  9. In Jesus' name.

  10. Okay, so I'm going to read from Luke 3, starting from verse, let's say, 21 to 413.

  11. Now, when all the people were baptized and when Jesus also had been baptized

  12. and was praying, the heavens were opened,

  13. and the Holy Spirit descended on him in bodily form like a dog.

  14. And a voice came from heaven,

  15. You are my beloved son.

  16. With you I am well pleased.

  17. Jesus, when he began his ministry, was about 30 years of age,

  18. being the son of, as was supposed, of Joseph,

  19. the son of Heli, the son of Metathat,

  20. the son of Levi,

  21. the son of Melchi,

  22. the son of Janiah,

  23. the son of Joseph,

  24. the son of Metathias,

  25. the son of Amos,

  26. the son of Nahum,

  27. the son of Esli,

  28. the son of Nagaiah,

  29. the son of Math,

  30. the son of Metathias,

  31. the son of Simeon,

  32. the son of Josek,

  33. the son of Judah,

  34. the son of Joannan,

  35. the son of Reza,

  36. the son of Zerubbabel,

  37. the Rons of Sons,

  38. the son of Sheltiel,

  39. the son of Mirai,

  40. the son of Melchi,

  41. the son of Adai,

  42. the son of Kosam,

  43. the son of El-Madan,

  44. the son of Er,

  45. the son of Joshua,

  46. the son of Eliezer,

  47. the son of Jorim,

  48. the son of Mat Corinthians,

  49. the son of Levi,

  50. the son of Simeon,

  51. the son of Judah,

  52. the son of Joseph,

  53. the son of JahХ notice,

  54. the son of Eliakim,

  55. the son of Meliah,

  56. the son of Mena,

  57. the son of Matatha,

  58. the son of Nathan,

  59. the son ofman,

  60. the son of David,

  61. the son of Jesse,

  62. the son of bat,

  63. the son of Boaz the son of Salah the son of Nashih the son of Aminadab the son of Ajme the son of Arnie

  64. the son of Hezron the son of Perez the son of Judah the son of Jacob the son of Isaac

  65. the son of Abraham the son of Terah the son of Nahor the son of Saruk the son of Rheul the son

  66. of Pellick the son of Eber the son of Shela the son of Canaan the son of Arfaxad the son of Shem

  67. the son of Noah, the son of Lamech, the son of Methuselah, the son of Enoch, the son of Jared,

  68. the son of Mahalel, the son of Canaan, the son of Anos, the son of Seth, the son of Adam, the son of God.

  69. And Jesus, full of the Spirit, returned from Jordan and was led by the Spirit in the wilderness for 40 days,

  70. being tempted by the devil. And he ate nothing during those days, and when they were ended, he was hungry.

  71. The devil said to him, If you are the son of God, command these stones to become bread.

  72. And Jesus answered him, It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone.

  73. And the devil took him up and showed him all the kingdoms of the world in the moment of time,

  74. and said to him, To you I will give all these authority and their glory, for it hath been delivered to me,

  75. and I give it to whom I will. If you then will worship me, it will all be yours.

  76. And Jesus answered him, It is written, You shall worship the Lord your God, and him only shall you serve.

  77. And he took him to Jerusalem and set him on the pinnacle of the temple, and said to him,

  78. If you are the son of God, throw yourself down from there, for it is written,

  79. He will command his angels concerning you to guard you.

  80. And on their hands they will bear you up, lest you strike your foot against the stone.

  81. And Jesus answered, It is said, You shall not put the Lord your God to the test.

  82. And when the devil had ended every temptation, he departed from him until an opportune time.

  83. This is the word of God.

  84. Thanks.

  85. Imagine meeting someone that's just gleaming with glory and charisma.

  86. And surely you think to yourself, This is a VIP.

  87. This is an important person.

  88. And that person walks right up to you with such gravitas that you feel tempted to bow down in his presence,

  89. almost to worship him.

  90. And that's what we see in Revelation chapter 22, verses 8 to 9.

    Revelation 22:8–9

  91. And after encountering an angel of God and hearing his words and seeing his visions,

  92. Apostle John says,

  93. When I heard and saw them, I fell down to worship at the feet of the angel who showed them to me.

  94. But he said to me, You must not do that.

  95. I am a fellow servant with you and your brothers, the prophets, and with those who keep the words of this book.

  96. Worship God.

  97. This great personage is merely a servant.

  98. Who then is the king that this servant ministers to?

  99. If this is the manner of the servant, what kind of a person could this king be?

  100. If this is the butler, what kind of a person is the master of the house?

  101. That's kind of where we find ourselves here in Luke chapter 3, 21.

    Luke 3 chapter mention

  102. Because in chapter 3, earlier in chapter 3, we met John the Baptist.

  103. And we were told about his birth, that he will be great before the Lord.

  104. And his birth was attended with such remarkable circumstances that murmurings and rumors about him spread all over the town and the entire region.

  105. And people were openly wondering to themselves,

  106. What then will this child be?

  107. The people were in expectation and all were questioning in their hearts concerning John whether he might be the Christ.

  108. Luke chapter 3, verses 15 to 16.

    Luke 3:15–16

  109. But John answered them all, saying,

  110. I baptize you with water, but he who is mightier than I is coming,

  111. the strap of whose sandals I am not worthy to untie.

  112. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire.

  113. So in the ancient Near East, right, the desert climate,

  114. people's feet were clad with open-toed sandals,

  115. and so it would always become caked with dirt.

  116. And so washing the feet, therefore, was a daily necessity,

  117. but this was considered such a demeaning task

  118. that Jews insisted that even slaves were not,

  119. Jewish slaves were not worthy of this task.

  120. That you should only have Gentile slaves do this,

  121. and Jewish slaves were not allowed to wash people's feet.

  122. And yet this great personage, this seeming VIP, the John the Baptist,

  123. says, I am not worthy to untie the sandals of this one who is to come.

  124. And so that's whom we are about to encounter.

  125. This great Jewish prophet, the powerful man of God,

  126. whom openly many wondered whether or not it was the Christ,

  127. says, no, this master is coming.

  128. It is not I.

  129. And that's whom we meet in Luke chapter 3, 21 to chapter 4, verse 13.

    Luke 3 chapter mention

  130. And in this passage, we learn that Jesus is the Son of God

  131. who represents and restores humanity to their rightful relationship with God.

  132. That's the main point of this passage.

  133. And we'll see that in three parts.

  134. First, we see the announcement of the Son of God.

  135. Second, we see the ancestry of the Son of God.

  136. And third, we see the allegiance of the Son of God.

  137. In verses 21 to 22, we say that,

  138. Now when all the people were baptized,

  139. and when Jesus also had been baptized and was praying,

  140. the heavens were opened,

  141. and the Holy Spirit descended on him in bodily form like a dove.

  142. And a voice came from heaven,

  143. You are my beloved Son, with you I am well pleased.

  144. In the parallel passage in Matthew chapter 3 and Mark chapter 1,

Matthew 3 chapter mention Mark 1 chapter mention

  145. We also learn that the Holy Spirit descended on Jesus after he was baptized.

  146. So that's the same.

  147. But Luke gives us the additional detail that it was, in fact,

  148. after Jesus was baptized,

  149. and while he was in the act of praying to God,

  150. that the heavens were opened,

  151. and the Holy Spirit descended on him.

  152. And a voice came from heaven.

  153. So God saw it fit to include four gospel accounts in Scripture,

  154. because each has its particular emphasis.

  155. And this emphasis on prayer is Luke's particular contribution.

  156. So in the pivotal moments of Jesus' life and ministry in the Gospel of Luke

  157. are all preceded by prayer.

  158. So before choosing his 12 disciples,

  159. who will go on to become the apostles and the foundation of the church,

  160. it says in Luke chapter 6, 12,

    Luke 6 chapter mention

  161. that all night Jesus continued in prayer to God.

  162. Immediately before Peter makes the breakthrough confession

  163. that Jesus is the Christ of God,

  164. Jesus was praying alone.

  165. And just before Jesus is transfigured with dazzling glory of God

  166. and joined by Moses and Elijah on the mountain,

  167. it says in Luke 9, 29,

  168. Jesus was praying.

  169. It was after Jesus finished praying in Luke chapter 11, verse 1,

    Luke 11:1

  170. that he teaches his disciples how to pray

  171. with the motto of the Lord's Prayer.

  172. And finally, before his impending arrest, trial, death, and resurrection,

  173. it says in Luke chapter 22, 41,

    Luke 22 chapter mention

  174. that Jesus knelt down and prayed.

  175. Why does this happen?

  176. Luke is intentionally driving home a point with this,

  177. because like the petals that the flower girl drops

  178. in preparation for the entrance of the bride,

  179. like the light that breaks on the horizon at dawn

  180. before the rising of the sun,

  181. God has appointed that prayer in the life of the spiritual person

  182. to be the forerunner to all of his blessings.

  183. We take for granted what was given to us

  184. if we receive it without asking,

  185. but we cherish it

  186. if it's given to us after much seeking.

  187. Like parents who are ready to give what is good to their children,

  188. but only ways that they would ask,

  189. because in the act of asking and giving,

  190. there's a deepening of love and trust.

  191. Our Heavenly Father stands ready to bestow what we would ask,

  192. ready to bestow on us every spiritual blessing

  193. in the heavenly places,

  194. awaiting that we would pray.

  195. And so this is really a side point here,

  196. but we are creatures of time,

  197. and so we like to mark days and weeks and years,

  198. and often we make resolutions for the new year,

  199. when January 1st comes.

  200. And so let me remind you that we're also creatures of habit,

  201. and so I want to ask you a question.

  202. Do you have a habit of daily prayer?

  203. Have you set aside regular time and place to pray?

  204. Because you have not set a deliberate course to pray,

  205. then you have planned not to pray.

  206. Not to guilt trip you,

  207. but this is,

  208. I sincerely wish that we would all take advantage

  209. of the privilege that prayer is,

  210. seeing this pattern of blessing that follows it

  211. in the Gospel of Luke.

  212. And in verse 22,

  213. it tells us that while Jesus was praying,

  214. the Holy Spirit descended on him in bodily form,

  215. like a dove,

  216. and a voice came from heaven.

  217. You are my beloved son,

  218. with you I am well pleased.

  219. The word bodily describes the form

  220. in which the Spirit descended.

  221. It had substance,

  222. so it was visible to everybody.

  223. And then the phrase,

  224. like a dove,

  225. describes the manner in which the Spirit descended.

  226. So he did not descend as a dove.

  227. It says that he descended like a dove.

  228. It's describing the manner in which he came down.

  229. And there are significant parallels

  230. between this account

  231. and the account of creation in Genesis 1.

  232. First, in Genesis 1, verse 2,

    Genesis 1:2

  233. it uses bird language like here.

  234. It says that the Spirit of God

  235. was hovering over the face of the waters.

  236. And in that moment,

  237. as the Spirit is hovering like a bird,

  238. God speaks creation into this existence.

  239. And so something that's similarity,

  240. that parallel is suggesting

  241. that something of cosmic significance

  242. is brewing right now

  243. in Jesus' baptism

  244. and while he's praying

  245. that the Spirit of God is hovering

  246. and God the Father speaks.

  247. This is a turning point, really,

  248. in human history.

  249. Because the Jews had reckoned,

  250. starting around 435 B.C.,

  251. after the death of Malachi,

  252. Israel's last prophet,

  253. that God had ceased speaking.

  254. The Jews during this time of Jesus

  255. believed that since that time,

  256. God had only spoken to them

  257. through faint whispers,

  258. these echoes.

  259. God never spoke to them directly.

  260. Because of that,

  261. even the so-called prophets

  262. or the people who spoke,

  263. those words were not considered

  264. divinely authoritative

  265. like the previous sayings

  266. of the prophets.

  267. But here, once again,

  268. the voice of God

  269. is heard directly.

  270. Heaven at long last

  271. breaks those hundreds of years

  272. of silence.

  273. And God the Father's announcement,

  274. this dramatic speech,

  275. concerns Jesus' sonship.

  276. He says,

  277. You are my beloved son.

  278. With you, I am well pleased.

  279. So here we see a glimpse,

  280. an early glimpse,

  281. of the triune God,

  282. the Trinity.

  283. The loving Father,

  284. the beloved Son,

  285. and then the Holy Spirit

  286. who bestows and betokens God's love,

  287. who's a token of God's love.

  288. So this is an announcement

  289. of Jesus' divinity.

  290. He's the divine Son.

  291. He is the Son of Man,

  292. as we saw,

  293. but He's also the Son of God.

  294. And as such,

  295. He stands here

  296. as the Son of Man

  297. and Son of God

  298. who bridges heaven and earth

  299. and connects God to man.

  300. Where He stands,

  301. where Jesus stands,

  302. the heavens open.

  303. Where He stands,

  304. the Father speaks.

  305. And where He stands,

  306. the Spirit descends.

  307. He is the one mediator

  308. between God and men.

  309. And He's the one

  310. that establishes

  311. that broken communication line

  312. between God and men.

  313. He's the one

  314. who stands in the gap.

  315. He's the Son of God

  316. who represents

  317. and restores humanity

  318. to their rightful relationship

  319. with God.

  320. And this language of sonship

  321. not only communicates

  322. His divinity,

  323. His divine sonship,

  324. but also communicates

  325. the fact that Jesus

  326. is the Messianic King.

  327. It communicates His role.

  328. Because in the prophecy

  329. of Psalm chapter 2

    Psalms 2:7–8

  330. verses 7 to 8,

  331. it said,

  332. God said concerning

  333. the Messianic King,

  334. You are my Son.

  335. Today I have begotten you.

  336. Ask of me

  337. and I will make

  338. the nations your heritage

  339. and the ends of the earth

  340. your possession.

  341. And also in the Messianic prophecy

  342. of Isaiah 42.1,

  343. God said,

  344. Behold my servant

  345. whom I uphold,

  346. my chosen,

  347. in whom my soul delights,

  348. I put my spirit upon him.

  349. He will bring forth justice

  350. to the nations.

  351. You can think about

  352. what's happening here

  353. this way.

  354. So when you're applying

  355. for a job somewhere,

  356. it's kind of helpful

  357. to have an endorsement

  358. from the CEO

  359. of the company.

  360. And when you're,

  361. so this is God's endorsement

  362. of Jesus' ministry

  363. as the Messianic King

  364. who begins his ministry

  365. here after this.

  366. And because Luke writes

  367. in his sequel,

  368. the Acts of the Apostles

  369. in chapter 10,

  370. verse 37 to 38,

  371. that the early Christians

  372. saw this instance,

  373. the Jesus' baptism

  374. and the God the Father

  375. speaking from heaven

  376. to affirm his sonship,

  377. that this was a significant event

  378. that proved the identity

  379. of Jesus to the watching eyes.

  380. And they describe this event

  381. as the time

  382. when God anointed

  383. Jesus of Nazareth

  384. with the Holy Spirit

  385. and with power.

  386. Now, the language

  387. of anointing

  388. conveys the kingship

  389. because in the old days,

  390. kings were anointed

  391. at their inauguration.

  392. So this, in effect,

  393. is Jesus' royal inauguration.

  394. The king is coming

  395. into his kingdom.

  396. He's being anointed

  397. by the Holy Spirit.

  398. And this is not,

  399. by that I don't mean

  400. that Jesus is becoming

  401. the Son of God here.

  402. He is the eternal Son of God.

  403. He was born the Messianic King

  404. as Luke chapter 1 and 2

    Luke 1 chapter mention

  405. made clear.

  406. But this is when

  407. he is formally recognized,

  408. legitimized,

  409. and announced to the world

  410. and presented to the world

  411. as the Son of God on earth.

  412. That's the announcement

  413. of the Son of God.

  414. And after the announcement

  415. of the Son of God,

  416. we see the ancestry

  417. of the Son of God

  418. in verses 23 to 38.

  419. Nowadays,

  420. genetic testing websites

  421. like 23andMe

  422. are getting very popular,

  423. right?

  424. With many family tree records

  425. having been lost.

  426. People are curious

  427. to find out

  428. where they come from

  429. because our ancestry

  430. reveals something

  431. about ourselves,

  432. right?

  433. DNA tests.

  434. Nowadays,

  435. are fairly comprehensive.

  436. They reveal

  437. our congenital health risks,

  438. carrier status for genes

  439. that we could pass on

  440. to our children,

  441. as well as,

  442. of course,

  443. reveals our ethnicity

  444. and who our relatives are.

  445. And likewise,

  446. Luke here,

  447. for a similar purpose,

  448. includes the ancestry

  449. of Jesus.

  450. He has to reveal

  451. something about him,

  452. to tell us

  453. who he really is.

  454. And verse 23 says

  455. that Jesus,

  456. when he began his ministry,

  457. was about 30 years of age.

  458. This is not a throwaway statement.

  459. Luke doesn't provide

  460. an exact age

  461. at which Jesus began

  462. his ministry,

  463. but instead provides

  464. an approximate number

  465. and he rounds it to 30.

  466. And this is intentional

  467. because according to

  468. Numbers chapter 4,

    Numbers 4:3

  469. verse 3,

  470. 30 was the age

  471. at which priests

  472. were allowed

  473. to enter into the priesthood.

  474. According to Ezekiel

    Ezekiel 1:1

  475. chapter 1,

  476. verse 1,

  477. 30 was the age

  478. when Ezekiel,

  479. the prophet,

  480. was called into

  481. his prophetic ministry.

  482. And according to

  483. Genesis 41, 26,

  484. and 2 Samuel chapter 5,

    2 Samuel 5:4

  485. verse 4,

  486. 30 was also the age

  487. at which Joseph

  488. and David,

  489. respectively,

  490. began their reign

  491. as rulers,

  492. as kings.

  493. So Luke is telling us

  494. by this,

  495. that Jesus began

  496. his ministry

  497. at about 30 years of age

  498. to connect

  499. Jesus' inauguration

  500. with the three major offices

  501. of the Old Testament era,

  502. priest,

  503. prophet,

  504. and king.

  505. Jesus is the one

  506. who comprehensively

  507. encompasses

  508. and ultimately fulfills

  509. all the priestly,

  510. prophetic,

  511. and kingly offices

  512. among God's people.

  513. He's the one

  514. who fulfills it all.

  515. He's the one

  516. whom we have been

  517. waiting for.

  518. And at 30 years of age,

  519. he enters his service.

  520. And Jesus was,

  521. according to

  522. the rest of verse 23,

  523. the son,

  524. as was supposed,

  525. of Joseph.

  526. The parenthetical remark,

  527. as was supposed,

  528. is an acknowledgement

  529. of the virgin birth

  530. of Jesus.

  531. Jesus was legally

  532. reckoned the son

  533. of Joseph,

  534. but he was not actually

  535. the biological child

  536. of Joseph

  537. because he was born

  538. of the virgin Mary.

  539. And the point

  540. was made

  541. very sharply

  542. earlier in chapter 2,

  543. verse 48, 49,

  544. when Mary asked

  545. Jesus,

  546. Son,

  547. why have you

  548. treated us so?

  549. Behold,

  550. your father and I

  551. have been searching

  552. for you

  553. in great distress.

  554. But then Jesus

  555. responded

  556. by saying

  557. to them,

  558. Why were you

  559. looking for me?

  560. Did you not know

  561. that I must be

  562. in my father's house?

  563. Jesus explicitly

  564. claimed

  565. his divine

  566. sonship

  567. over and above

  568. his sonship

  569. to Joseph

  570. and Mary?

  571. And then

  572. from here

  573. through verse 38,

  574. we see this,

  575. he's trying

  576. to ask

  577. his ancestry

  578. as the son

  579. of God.

  580. Now,

  581. it's,

  582. at this point,

  583. I should address this

  584. because you might

  585. be aware of it already

  586. or it will come up

  587. as you're reading

  588. the scriptures

  589. because the gospel

  590. of Matthew

  591. also provides

  592. a genealogy

  593. of Jesus,

  594. but the two lists

  595. are actually

  596. quite different.

  597. For example,

  598. Matthew lists

  599. 41 male heads

  600. of families

  601. while Luke

  602. lists 57.

  603. From David

  604. to Jesus,

  605. there are,

  606. in fact,

  607. only two

  608. overlapping names.

  609. And the discrepancy

  610. begins immediately

  611. with Joseph's father

  612. because Luke

    Luke 23:23

  613. chapter 23,

  614. verse 23

  615. says that

  616. Joseph

  617. is the son

  618. of Heli,

  619. but Matthew

    Matthew 1 chapter mention

  620. chapter 1,

  621. 16

  622. says that

  623. Joseph's father

  624. was,

  625. in fact,

  626. a man named

  627. Jacob.

  628. This sets off

  629. two kind of

  630. deviations

  631. that don't converge

  632. again until

  633. King David.

  634. And in order to

  635. understand this

  636. discrepancy,

  637. we need to address

  638. a few things

  639. about ancient

  640. Jewish genealogies

  641. in general.

  642. First,

  643. the word father

  644. can be used

  645. narrowly to refer

  646. to one's immediate

  647. biological father,

  648. or it could refer

  649. more broadly,

  650. as we do in English,

  651. to one's ancestor.

  652. And likewise,

  653. the word son

  654. can narrowly refer

  655. to one's immediate

  656. biological child,

  657. but it can also

  658. refer more broadly

  659. to one's descendant.

  660. It's the same

  661. in English

  662. as in Hebrew

  663. and Greek,

  664. which is why

  665. Matthew can say

  666. in chapter 1

  667. that Jesus

  668. is the son of David.

  669. David is not

  670. his immediate father.

  671. David is his ancestor.

  672. So that's the first point.

  673. Second is that

  674. genealogies

  675. are not always exhaustive.

  676. In fact,

  677. they are often selective.

  678. For example,

  679. Matthew explicitly says

  680. in Matthew chapter 1,

    Matthew 1:17

  681. verse 17,

  682. so all the generations

  683. from Abraham to David

  684. were 14 generations,

  685. and from David

  686. to the deportation

  687. to Babylon,

  688. 14 generations,

  689. and from the deportation

  690. to Babylon

  691. to the Christ,

  692. 14 generations.

  693. I don't know

  694. if you're following

  695. the pattern,

  696. but there's obviously

  697. an organizational scheme there.

  698. He's not just listing

  699. all the names.

  700. He's intentionally

  701. giving 14 names

  702. from each major eras

  703. of Jewish history,

  704. of Israel's history.

  705. And I think

  706. the organizational scheme

  707. comes from Gematria.

  708. Gematria is a method

  709. by which Jews

  710. assigned a numerical value

  711. to each Hebrew letter

  712. so that someone's name

  713. can be added up

  714. and given a number value.

  715. So according to this method,

  716. the name David

  717. has the numerical value

  718. of 14.

  719. Which is likely

  720. why Matthew lists

  721. three sets of 14s

  722. to prove that Jesus

  723. is indeed

  724. the son of David

  725. as Matthew begins

  726. his book with

  727. in chapter 1,

  728. verse 1.

  729. The book of the genealogy

  730. of Jesus Christ,

  731. the son of David.

  732. So in other words,

  733. there's a scheme.

  734. These genealogies

  735. don't list all the names.

  736. They leave some names out.

  737. They're selected.

  738. That's the second point.

  739. The third point,

  740. which is crucial

  741. for understanding this,

  742. is that Jews

  743. practice

  744. levirate marriage

  745. as stipulated

  746. in Deuteronomy 25.

  747. This meant that

  748. when a man

  749. who is married,

  750. if he dies

  751. without a son

  752. to carry on his name,

  753. it was his brother's

  754. duty to produce

  755. a son for him

  756. by taking his brother's

  757. surviving wife,

  758. the widow,

  759. as his own wife.

  760. Now this was,

  761. this seems strange

  762. and foreign to us,

  763. but this was

  764. an important custom

  765. in Israel

  766. because the Jews'

  767. inheritance

  768. in God's promised land

  769. was directly tied

  770. to their ancestry,

  771. the tribe that they

  772. belonged to,

  773. the family that they

  774. belonged to.

  775. So if they had no son,

  776. if the man had no son

  777. to his name,

  778. it would mean that

  779. his family

  780. and all of his

  781. progeny

  782. would be permanently

  783. blotted out

  784. from the record

  785. of the nation of Israel

  786. and God's

  787. intended promises.

  788. So this,

  789. so this is why

  790. the Levirate marriage

  791. was important,

  792. but this can obviously,

  793. you can figure out,

  794. complicate some genealogies

  795. because if,

  796. if a son of a Levirate marriage

  797. would,

  798. because son of a Levirate marriage

  799. would be considered

  800. legally the son

  801. of the deceased man,

  802. the dead man,

  803. but physically

  804. he would be

  805. the son of his brother.

  806. You guys see that?

  807. Now why,

  808. why are,

  809. why is this important?

  810. So all these,

  811. with all these factors in mind,

  812. we can make sense

  813. of the discrepancy

  814. between Matthew and Luke.

  815. Uh,

  816. several plausible explanations

  817. have been proposed

  818. throughout church history.

  819. I,

  820. the one that I like best

  821. that I think is the best

  822. explanation for it

  823. is that Matthew

  824. is providing

  825. the royal genealogy.

  826. So the line of people

  827. who would have been

  828. the legal heirs

  829. to the Davidic throne.

  830. And while Luke

  831. is providing

  832. the physical genealogy,

  833. the line of people

  834. from whom Joseph

  835. was physically descended.

  836. So then even though

  837. Jacob was the legal

  838. heir of David,

  839. uh,

  840. because he died

  841. without a son,

  842. his relative,

  843. perhaps a brother

  844. or a half-brother,

  845. Heli,

  846. had a son

  847. in his name

  848. through Levit marriage

  849. to Jacob's widow.

  850. That was Joseph.

  851. Which is why

  852. Matthew and Luke

  853. would be both correct

  854. in saying that

  855. either Jacob

  856. was the father of Joseph

  857. or Heli

  858. was the father of Joseph.

  859. Um,

  860. this would explain

  861. why Matthew's

  862. and Luke's genealogies,

  863. uh,

  864. uh,

  865. are identical.

  866. They converge

  867. and are identical

  868. starting David and up.

  869. I think it's because

  870. Matthew is concerned

  871. with preserving

  872. the royal genealogy,

  873. so after David

  874. it becomes all messed up.

  875. It would be different

  876. from Luke and Luke and Mark,

  877. but it's exactly the same

  878. from David and onward.

  879. Uh,

  880. and this would also explain

  881. why,

  882. if you look at Matthew's

  883. genealogy,

  884. he includes all the kings

  885. from Judah,

  886. from David to Jequaniah,

  887. but Luke's genealogy

  888. contains no king of Judah

  889. except King David,

  890. right?

  891. So I think this is

  892. a good explanation

  893. of the,

  894. the deviation.

  895. So,

  896. notwithstanding

  897. this discrepancy,

  898. the point that they're

  899. making is the same

  900. and it's consistent

  901. in Matthew and Luke

  902. that regardless

  903. of which method

  904. you use to trace

  905. their line,

  906. Jesus' line goes

  907. back to King David.

  908. The point is that

  909. Jesus is the rightful

  910. heir to David's throne.

  911. And not only to David,

  912. from David to Abraham

  913. there's perfect agreement

  914. as well.

  915. So Jesus is not only

  916. the son of David,

  917. he's also of the

  918. seed of Abraham,

  919. he's the fulfillment

  920. of the promise

  921. that God had given

  922. to Abraham

  923. to the nation

  924. of Israel.

  925. And Abraham is,

  926. so Abraham is as far

  927. back as Matthew goes

  928. in his genealogy,

  929. but from verses 34

  930. to 38,

  931. Luke goes back

  932. even further.

  933. So look at

  934. verses 34 to 38

  935. with me.

  936. So he,

  937. going back to

  938. the genealogy

  939. provided in Genesis

    Genesis 11 chapter mention

  940. chapter 11

  941. and 5,

  942. Luke goes all

  943. the way back,

  944. it says in verse 38,

  945. the son of Seth,

  946. the son of Adam,

  947. the son of God.

  948. By going all the way

  949. back to Adam,

  950. who was created

  951. directly by God

  952. and therefore called

  953. the son of God,

  954. Luke is showing

  955. that Jesus,

  956. the true son of God,

  957. identified with

  958. all of humanity.

  959. He,

  960. like us,

  961. is of the seed

  962. of Adam.

  963. The son of God

  964. took on human flesh

  965. and became

  966. one of us.

  967. He is in fact

  968. the new

  969. and better

  970. Adam.

  971. God created

  972. Adam in his image

  973. to rule

  974. over the earth

  975. as his representative,

  976. God's representative.

  977. But instead,

  978. Adam rebelled

  979. against God

  980. and sought to

  981. rule for himself,

  982. sought to do

  983. his own will.

  984. And because Adam

  985. was the fountainhead

  986. of humanity,

  987. the first human,

  988. he represented

  989. all of us

  990. in God's creative design.

  991. So when he said

  992. he failed

  993. every single

  994. one of us

  995. so that everyone

  996. after him,

  997. that's all of us,

  998. is born into sin.

  999. But Jesus comes

  1000. as the new

  1001. and better Adam,

  1002. the son of God,

  1003. who represents

  1004. and restores humanity

  1005. to their rightful

  1006. relationship with God.

  1007. Look at Romans 5,

  1008. 12 to 29.

1009. He puts it this way.

  1010. Therefore,

  1011. just as sin

  1012. came into the world

  1013. through one man,

  1014. Adam,

  1015. and death

  1016. through sin,

  1017. much more

  1018. will those

  1019. who receive

  1020. the abundance

  1021. of grace

  1022. and the free gift

  1023. of righteousness

  1024. reign in life

  1025. through the one man,

  1026. Jesus Christ.

  1027. Therefore,

  1028. as one trespass

  1029. led to condemnation

  1030. for all men,

  1031. so one act

  1032. of righteousness

  1033. leads to justification

  1034. and life

  1035. for all men.

1036. For as by the one man's

  1037. disobedience

  1038. the many were made

  1039. sinners,

1040. so by the one man's

  1041. obedience

  1042. the many will be

  1043. made righteous.

  1044. if you are

  1045. a human being,

1046. which all of you are,

  1047. right,

  1048. then you are born

  1049. identifying

  1050. with Adam.

  1051. You were born

  1052. identifying

  1053. with his fall.

  1054. And as sinners,

  1055. we all deserve

  1056. God's judgment.

  1057. But God sent Jesus

  1058. as the new Adam.

  1059. See,

  1060. imagine failing

  1061. over and over again

  1062. for generation

  1063. after generation

  1064. after generation.

  1065. Every man

  1066. and every woman

  1067. had failed.

  1068. Here is God's plan

  1069. laid up for them

  1070. and every single one

  1071. of them had failed

  1072. and we were without

  1073. hope and lost.

  1074. No way of being

  1075. reconciled

  1076. and gotten restored

  1077. to right in relationship

  1078. with him.

  1079. But finally comes

  1080. that one man

  1081. who can restore us,

  1082. who can represent us,

  1083. who can fulfill

  1084. God's desire

  1085. and that's Jesus

  1086. the new Adam

  1087. and he succeeds

  1088. where Adam

  1089. had failed

  1090. by obeying

  1091. God the Father

  1092. perfectly

  1093. and dying

  1094. on the cross

  1095. for sinners.

  1096. So that all those

  1097. who renounce

  1098. themselves,

  1099. renounce their sins

  1100. and entrust themselves

  1101. to Jesus

  1102. may be forgiven

  1103. of their sins.

  1104. If you're here

  1105. this morning

  1106. and you have not

  1107. yet aligned yourself

  1108. with Jesus,

  1109. then Adam

  1110. is still your head

  1111. and your representative

  1112. and you will perish

  1113. as the object

  1114. of God's

  1115. righteous wrath.

  1116. but you can

  1117. align yourself

  1118. with Jesus

  1119. instead today

  1120. so that he

  1121. can be your head

  1122. and representative.

  1123. Then the penalty

  1124. of our sins

  1125. is laid on Jesus

  1126. which he paid

  1127. for on the cross

  1128. and his righteousness

  1129. and the rewards

  1130. that follow

  1131. are laid up

  1132. to us,

  1133. counted as ours.

  1134. That's why

  1135. 1 Corinthians 15

  1136. 22 says,

  1137. For in Adam

  1138. all die,

  1139. so also in Christ

  1140. all will be made

  1141. alive.

  1142. Are you in Adam

  1143. today

  1144. or are you

  1145. in Christ

  1146. today?

  1147. In Adam

  1148. is death

  1149. but in Christ

  1150. is life

  1151. everlasting.

  1152. So if you are

  1153. not a Christian

  1154. yet,

  1155. then this ancestry

  1156. of the Son

  1157. of God

  1158. is inviting you

  1159. to choose

  1160. Christ

  1161. and be restored

  1162. to a proper

  1163. relationship

  1164. with God.

  1165. So after telling

  1166. us about Jesus'

  1167. ancestry

  1168. in chapter 4

  1169. verses 1 to 13

  1170. Luke tells us

  1171. about the allegiance

  1172. of the Son

  1173. of God.

  1174. As the Son

  1175. of God,

  1176. Jesus displays

  1177. unyielding allegiance

  1178. to God the Father.

  1179. He says in

  1180. verses 1 to 2

  1181. of chapter 4,

  1182. read with me,

  1183. Jesus,

  1184. full of the Holy

  1185. Spirit,

  1186. returned from the

  1187. Jordan and was

  1188. led by the Spirit

  1189. in the wilderness

  1190. for 40 days,

  1191. being tempted

  1192. by the devil.

  1193. The devil

  1194. is a Greek

  1195. equivalent of

  1196. the Hebrew

  1197. word Satan

  1198. and it means

  1199. accuser

  1200. or slanderer.

  1201. It doesn't

  1202. merely refer to

  1203. demons

  1204. or evil

  1205. spirits

  1206. but to

  1207. Satan,

  1208. the head

  1209. honcho

  1210. of them

  1211. all.

  1212. But notice

  1213. the way

  1214. the sentence

  1215. is structured.

  1216. The devil

  1217. is not

  1218. the protagonist

  1219. of this

  1220. story.

  1221. Jesus is

  1222. and the Holy

  1223. Spirit is.

  1224. We're told

  1225. twice that

  1226. Jesus was

  1227. full of the

  1228. Holy Spirit

  1229. and he was

  1230. led by the

  1231. Holy Spirit

  1232. into being

  1233. tempted by the

  1234. devil.

  1235. It's the

  1236. Spirit's

  1237. fullness

  1238. and leading

  1239. that brings

  1240. Jesus to

  1241. 40 days

  1242. to be tempted

  1243. by the

  1244. devil.

  1245. The devil

  1246. is simply

  1247. playing foil

  1248. to Jesus

  1249. in order to

  1250. highlight Jesus'

  1251. faithful allegiance

  1252. to the Father

1253. as the Son of God.

  1254. This is insightful

  1255. for us

  1256. and we can apply

  1257. this to our lives

  1258. because being

  1259. tempted to sin

  1260. is not the same

  1261. thing as sinning.

  1262. If Jesus can be

  1263. tempted,

1264. so can all of us

  1265. and we will face

  1266. many temptations

  1267. in our lives.

  1268. But in the midst

  1269. of all of that,

  1270. this is also comforting

  1271. because we see

  1272. that even in

  1273. our temptations

  1274. and trials,

  1275. even in the

  1276. toughest moments,

  1277. even when it

  1278. seems like the

  1279. devil is calling

  1280. all the shots

  1281. in our lives,

  1282. in fact,

  1283. the Lord God

  1284. is in charge.

  1285. The Spirit of God

  1286. is leading

  1287. sovereignly.

  1288. And so,

  1289. if you feel

  1290. discouraged by the

  1291. trials and temptations

  1292. that you are facing

  1293. today in your life

  1294. and your situation

  1295. now,

  1296. you can know

  1297. from this

  1298. in Jesus'

  1299. example that

  1300. God is

  1301. in control,

  1302. that God

  1303. is the one

  1304. that's in charge.

  1305. He is at work

  1306. in and through

  1307. all of that.

  1308. As Charles Spurgeon

  1309. once said,

  1310. the refiner

  1311. is never very far

  1312. from the mouth

  1313. of the furnace

  1314. when his gold

  1315. is in the fire.

  1316. The word

  1317. to tempt

  1318. can also be

  1319. translated as

  1320. to test.

  1321. And depending

  1322. on the context,

  1323. it can mean

  1324. to tempt someone

  1325. in order to

  1326. make them fail

  1327. and discredit them.

  1328. Or it can mean

  1329. to test someone

  1330. to show

  1331. their true worth

  1332. and approve

  1333. them and

  1334. accredit them.

  1335. So,

  1336. it has both

  1337. nuances here

  1338. because while

  1339. it's the devil

  1340. that tempts

  1341. Jesus in order

  1342. to discredit him,

  1343. the Spirit of God

  1344. leads him into this

  1345. to test him

  1346. so that he can

  1347. accredit him,

  1348. approve him

  1349. in preparation

  1350. for the ministry

  1351. that he's about

  1352. to begin.

  1353. And this period

  1354. of testing

  1355. lasted 40 days

  1356. which,

  1357. like all the other

  1358. numbers that we've

  1359. seen so far,

  1360. is not a

  1361. throwaway number.

  1362. It has symbolic

  1363. significance

  1364. and is used

  1365. frequently throughout

  1366. the Old Testament.

  1367. But the most

  1368. important connection

  1369. to the Old Testament

  1370. is that Moses

  1371. fasted for 40 days

  1372. before receiving

  1373. the covenant

  1374. law from God

  1375. on behalf

  1376. of God's people.

  1377. And also,

  1378. Israel,

  1379. God's people,

  1380. wandered in the

  1381. wilderness

  1382. for 40 years.

  1383. So here,

  1384. Jesus' 40-day

  1385. journey into

  1386. the wilderness

  1387. parallels the

  1388. journey of Israel

  1389. for 40 years

  1390. in the wilderness.

  1391. And since

  1392. Jesus

  1393. uses

  1394. scripture,

  1395. citations

  1396. from Deuteronomy,

  1397. which tells

  1398. about Moses'

  1399. 40 days of

  1400. fast as well

  1401. as Israel's

  1402. journey in

  1403. the wilderness,

  1404. Jesus is here

  1405. being portrayed

  1406. as the

  1407. representative,

  1408. as a new

  1409. Israel,

  1410. the people,

  1411. the God,

  1412. the Son of God

  1413. who represents,

  1414. because Israel

  1415. is described

  1416. in Exodus

  1417. as God's

  1418. firstborn son.

  1419. And so here,

  1420. Jesus is the

  1421. new firstborn,

  1422. the new son

  1423. who represents

  1424. God's people

  1425. and succeeds

  1426. where Israel

  1427. had failed.

  1428. Now let's look

  1429. at the specific

  1430. aspects of the

  1431. three temptations.

  1432. It says at

  1433. the end of

  1434. verse 2 that

  1435. Jesus ate

  1436. nothing during

  1437. those days,

  1438. and when they

  1439. were ended,

  1440. he was hungry.

  1441. This is an

  1442. extended fast,

  1443. and remember

  1444. that while

  1445. Jesus is fully

  1446. God,

  1447. he's also

  1448. fully man,

  1449. and naturally

  1450. he was hungry.

  1451. And it is

  1452. at this

  1453. vulnerable moment

  1454. that the devil

  1455. palaces on him,

  1456. and he speaks

  1457. for the first

  1458. time in verse 3.

  1459. If you are

  1460. the Son of God,

  1461. command this

  1462. stone to

  1463. become bread.

  1464. We saw

  1465. earlier at

  1466. Jesus' baptism

  1467. that God the

  1468. Father said

  1469. that Jesus

  1470. is his

  1471. beloved Son,

  1472. and then in

  1473. the genealogy,

  1474. we saw that

  1475. Jesus is the

  1476. Son of Adam,

  1477. the Son of God.

  1478. So once the

  1479. main theme

  1480. of this entire

  1481. section is that

  1482. Jesus is the

  1483. Son of God,

  1484. and that theme

  1485. is running

  1486. through these

  1487. temptation accounts

  1488. as well,

  1489. because the

  1490. devil's temptations

  1491. hinge upon that

  1492. truth,

  1493. because it begins,

  1494. if you are

  1495. the Son of God,

  1496. and he repeats

  1497. that again in

  1498. verse 9,

  1499. if you are

  1500. the Son of God,

  1501. throw yourself

  1502. down from here.

  1503. Now, by asking

  1504. if you are

  1505. the Son of God,

  1506. the devil is not

  1507. questioning Jesus'

  1508. identity as the

  1509. Son of God,

  1510. because the

  1511. grammatical

  1512. construction,

  1513. this is what

  1514. Greek grammarians

  1515. call the first

  1516. class condition,

  1517. which means it

  1518. assumes that the

  1519. condition is true,

  1520. if you are

  1521. the Son of God.

  1522. It's assumed

  1523. that that is

  1524. true.

  1525. He is the

  1526. Son of God.

  1527. So it could

  1528. really better be

  1529. translated as,

  1530. since you are

  1531. the Son of God,

  1532. since you are

  1533. the Son of God,

  1534. do this and

  1535. this.

  1536. So the devil is

  1537. certain that

  1538. Jesus is the

  1539. Son of God,

  1540. and the devil

  1541. knows that

  1542. Jesus knows

  1543. that he is

  1544. the Son of God.

  1545. He's not

  1546. playing, you

  1547. know, dare

  1548. game or using

  1549. reverse psychology

  1550. to make Jesus

  1551. sin.

  1552. He's saying

  1553. that he's

  1554. rather trying

  1555. to get Jesus

  1556. to misuse

  1557. his prerogative

  1558. as the Son of

  1559. God and

  1560. act independently

  1561. of his

  1562. Father's will.

  1563. The first

  1564. temptation is

  1565. a temptation

  1566. of appetite.

  1567. Right?

  1568. There's nothing

  1569. wrong with

  1570. the appetite

  1571. for bread

  1572. in and of

  1573. itself.

  1574. God designed

  1575. us to be

  1576. hungry for

  1577. food,

  1578. but Jesus

  1579. is here

  1580. tempted to

  1581. doubt God's

  1582. provision for

  1583. him and to

  1584. provide for

  1585. himself.

  1586. It brings

  1587. into question

  1588. the way God

  1589. is leading

  1590. Jesus into

  1591. the wilderness

  1592. for testing.

  1593. Right?

  1594. We can see

  1595. this in the

  1596. way Jesus

  1597. answers the

  1598. devil in

  1599. verse 4.

  1600. It is written,

  1601. man shall not

  1602. live by bread

  1603. alone.

  1604. Right?

  1605. Jesus is here

  1606. quoting from

  1607. Deuteronomy

    Deuteronomy 8:3

  1608. chapter 8

  1609. verse 3

  1610. where Moses

  1611. tells the

  1612. Israelites,

  1613. he humbled

  1614. you and

  1615. let you

  1616. hunger and

  1617. fed you

  1618. with manna

  1619. which you

  1620. did not

  1621. know nor

  1622. did your

  1623. fathers know

  1624. that he

  1625. might make

  1626. you know

  1627. that the

  1628. man does

  1629. not live

  1630. by bread

  1631. alone.

  1632. But man

  1633. lives by

  1634. every word

  1635. that comes

  1636. from the

  1637. mouth of

  1638. the Lord.

  1639. God humbled

  1640. the Israelites

  1641. by letting

  1642. them experience

  1643. hunger and

  1644. then instead

  1645. of giving

  1646. them all the

  1647. food that

  1648. they will

  1649. need for

  1650. their entire

  1651. journey of

  1652. wilderness,

  1653. God gave

  1654. them just

  1655. enough manna

  1656. to last

  1657. them one

  1658. day so

  1659. that every

  1660. single day

  1661. they would

  1662. be forced

  1663. to depend

  1664. on God

  1665. for his

  1666. daily

  1667. provision.

  1668. This was

  1669. intended to

  1670. make Israel

  1671. depend on

  1672. God and

  1673. look to

  1674. him.

  1675. they were

  1676. to learn

  1677. humility and

  1678. submission but

  1679. instead of

  1680. learning to

  1681. depend on

  1682. God they

  1683. learned to

  1684. rebel against

  1685. God, to

  1686. grumble,

  1687. complain,

  1688. to unbelief.

  1689. Jesus is

  1690. facing the

  1691. same temptation

  1692. here.

  1693. The devil is

  1694. asking him

  1695. aren't you

  1696. the son of

  1697. God?

  1698. Aren't you

  1699. starving?

  1700. Where is

  1701. your father?

  1702. Doesn't he

  1703. care?

  1704. Doesn't he

  1705. provide for

  1706. you?

  1707. Take things

  1708. into your

  1709. own hands.

  1710. Here you

  1711. can provide

  1712. for yourself

  1713. better than

  1714. he can.

  1715. Turn this

  1716. stone into

  1717. bread.

  1718. This is

  1719. representative

  1720. really of

  1721. all the

  1722. temptations

  1723. of any

  1724. kinds of

  1725. temptation

  1726. that we

  1727. face as

  1728. well.

  1729. Temptations

  1730. of appetite.

  1731. What are

  1732. your appetites

  1733. that have

  1734. grown in

  1735. ordinate in

  1736. your life?

  1737. That's

  1738. become unruly.

  1739. The devil

  1740. tempts us

  1741. in similar

  1742. ways.

  1743. Aren't you

  1744. a child

  1745. of God?

  1746. Where is

  1747. your father?

  1748. Aren't you

  1749. lonely?

  1750. lonely?

  1751. Date that

  1752. non-Christian

  1753. girlfriend.

  1754. Marry that

  1755. man that's

  1756. no good

  1757. for you.

  1758. Take things

  1759. into your

  1760. own hands.

  1761. Don't wait

  1762. on God

  1763. and trust

  1764. in his

  1765. provision.

  1766. Aren't you

  1767. in need?

  1768. Don't you

  1769. want to

  1770. eat at

  1771. those nice

  1772. restaurants?

  1773. Don't you

  1774. want to

  1775. buy those

  1776. clothes?

  1777. Don't you

  1778. want to

  1779. feel more

  1780. attractive?

  1781. Don't you

  1782. want to be

  1783. perceived as

  1784. more successful?

  1785. Don't you

  1786. want to

  1787. lust after

  1788. that woman

  1789. and fantasize

  1790. about her?

  1791. Don't you

  1792. want to

  1793. drink that

  1794. extra pint

  1795. of beer

  1796. that will

  1797. tip you

  1798. over the

  1799. edge?

  1800. Why are

  1801. you

  1802. depriving

  1803. yourself

  1804. of all

  1805. these

  1806. things?

  1807. Where is

  1808. your father?

  1809. Aren't you

  1810. a child

  1811. of God?

  1812. Why isn't

  1813. he caring

  1814. for you?

  1815. even if

  1816. you're

  1817. trying to

  1818. meet a

  1819. genuine

  1820. legitimate

  1821. need that

  1822. you really

  1823. have?

  1824. Is your

  1825. posture

  1826. toward God

  1827. of humble

  1828. dependence

  1829. clinging to

  1830. him for

  1831. his provision

  1832. looking to

  1833. him as

  1834. your Lord

  1835. and as

  1836. your God

  1837. and as

  1838. your King

  1839. or are

  1840. you taking

  1841. things into

  1842. your own

  1843. hands?

  1844. In

  1845. Matthew 6

  1846. 25 to

  1847. 34

  1848. Jesus says

  1849. therefore I

  1850. tell you

  1851. do not be

  1852. anxious about

  1853. your life

  1854. what you

  1855. will eat

  1856. or what

  1857. you will

  1858. drink

  1859. nor about

  1860. your body

  1861. what you

  1862. will put

  1863. on

  1864. is not

  1865. life more

  1866. than food

  1867. and the

  1868. body more

  1869. than clothing

  1870. but seek

  1871. first the

  1872. kingdom of

  1873. God and

  1874. his righteousness

  1875. and all

  1876. these things

  1877. will be added

  1878. to you.

  1879. You seek to

  1880. satisfy your

  1881. appetites more

  1882. than humbly

  1883. obeying God.

  1884. Are you

  1885. seeking and

  1886. advancing the

  1887. kingdom of

  1888. God in your

  1889. life or are

  1890. you merely

  1891. in a

  1892. serial pursuit

  1893. of satisfying

  1894. your appetites?

  1895. That's the

  1896. first temptation

  1897. the temptation

  1898. of appetite.

  1899. Yes we

  1900. need bread

  1901. for life

  1902. but life

  1903. is not

  1904. for bread.

  1905. The point

  1906. the purpose

  1907. of our life

  1908. is to do

  1909. the will

  1910. of God

  1911. which is why

  1912. Jesus says

  1913. in John 4

  1914. 34

  1915. my food

  1916. is to do

  1917. the will

  1918. of him

  1919. who sent

  1920. me

  1921. and to

  1922. finish

  1923. his work.

  1924. that's

  1925. my food.

  1926. That's

  1927. what's

  1928. prior.

  1929. That's

  1930. what's

  1931. most

  1932. important.

  1933. The second

  1934. temptation

  1935. is a

  1936. temptation

  1937. to

  1938. ambition.

  1939. It says

  1940. in verses

  1941. 5 to 7

  1942. and the

  1943. devil took

  1944. him up

  1945. and showed

  1946. him all

  1947. the kingdoms

  1948. of the

  1949. world

  1950. in a

  1951. moment

  1952. of

  1953. time

  1954. and

  1955. said

  1956. to

  1957. him

  1958. to

  1959. you

  1960. I

  1961. will

  1962. give

  1963. all the

  1964. authority

  1965. and their

  1966. glory

  1967. for it

  1968. has been

  1969. delivered

  1970. to me

  1971. and I

  1972. give it

  1973. to whom

  1974. I

  1975. will.

  1976. If you

  1977. then

  1978. will

  1979. worship

  1980. me

  1981. it

  1982. will

  1983. all

  1984. be

  1985. yours.

  1986. Some

  1987. people

  1988. ask

  1989. at this

  1990. point

  1991. whether or

  1992. not

  1993. Satan

  1994. is

  1995. bluffing

  1996. here

  1997. because

  1998. they

  1999. don't

  2000. really

  2001. think

  2002. that

  2003. Satan

  2004. has

  2005. this

  2006. kind

  2007. of

  2008. power

  2009. to

  2010. offer

  2011. Jesus

  2012. all

  2013. the

  2014. kingdoms

  2015. of

  2016. the

  2017. world

  2018. and

  2019. their

  2020. glory

  2021. but

  2022. I

  2023. think

  2024. it's

  2025. kind

  2026. of

  2027. missing

  2028. the

  2029. point

  2030. of

  2031. the

  2032. narrative

  2033. to

  2034. ask

  2035. that

  2036. question

  2037. because

  2038. Jesus

  2039. obviously

  2040. treats

  2041. it

  2042. as

  2043. a

  2044. real

  2045. temptation

  2046. and

  2047. this

  2048. is

  2049. consistent

  2050. with

  2051. the

  2052. fact

  2053. that

  2054. the

  2055. devil

  2056. is

  2057. described

  2058. in several

  2059. instances

  2060. throughout

  2061. the

  2062. New

  2063. Testament

  2064. as

  2065. the

  2066. ruler

  2067. of

  2068. this

  2069. world

  2070. this

  2071. doesn't

  2072. mean

  2073. of course

  2074. that

  2075. the

  2076. devil

  2077. is

  2078. a

  2079. rival

  2080. authority

  2081. to

  2082. God

  2083. he

  2084. says

  2085. that

  2086. all

  2087. this

  2088. authority

  2089. and

  2090. their

  2091. glory

  2092. has

  2093. been

  2094. delivered

  2095. to

  2096. me

  2097. meaning

  2098. the

  2099. devil

  2100. has

  2101. subordinate

  2102. authority

  2103. to

  2104. God

  2105. and

  2106. has

  2107. nothing

  2108. but

  2109. that

  2110. which

  2111. God

  2112. himself

  2113. has

  2114. delivered

  2115. to

  2116. him

  2117. has

  2118. allowed

  2119. him

  2120. and

  2121. permitted

  2122. him

  2123. to

  2124. have

  2125. so

  2126. it's

  2127. interesting

  2128. though

  2129. here

  2130. that

  2131. Luke

  2132. ties

  2133. all

  2134. of

  2135. this

  2136. world's

  2137. authority

  2138. and

  2139. glory

  2140. the

  2141. political

  2142. institutional

  2143. powers

  2144. he

  2145. ties

  2146. it

  2147. to

  2148. the

  2149. devil

  2150. that

  2151. this

  2152. world

  2153. is

  2154. under

  2155. the

  2156. devil's

  2157. influence

  2158. until

  2159. it's

  2160. wrested

  2161. from

  2162. his

  2163. control

  2164. by

  2165. the

  2166. returning

  2167. king

  2168. when

  2169. he

  2170. consummates

  2171. his

  2172. kingdom

  2173. on

  2174. earth

  2175. that's

  2176. why

  2177. it's

  2178. a

  2179. mistake

  2180. for

  2181. us

  2182. as

  2183. Christians

  2184. to

  2185. conflate

  2186. the

  2187. kingdom

  2188. of

  2189. God

  2190. with

  2191. any

  2192. of

  2193. the

  2194. kingdoms

  2195. of

  2196. this

  2197. world

  2198. it

  2199. doesn't

  2200. matter

  2201. how

  2202. nice

  2203. or

  2204. great

  2205. these

  2206. earthly

  2207. kingdoms

  2208. are

  2209. we

  2210. can't

  2211. ever

  2212. conflate

  2213. the

  2214. two

  2215. entirely

  2216. because

  2217. even

  2218. though

  2219. we

  2220. can

  2221. influence

  2222. the

  2223. kingdoms

  2224. of

  2225. this

  2226. world

  2227. by

  2228. varying

  2229. degrees

  2230. we

  2231. could

  2232. never

  2233. put

  2234. our

  2235. hope

  2236. and

  2237. trust

  2238. entirely

  2239. on

  2240. them

  2241. because

  2242. that's

  2243. not

  2244. the

  2245. kingdom

  2246. of

  2247. God

  2248. the

  2249. main

  2250. thrust

  2251. that's

  2252. a

  2253. side

  2254. point

  2255. the

  2256. main

  2257. thrust

  2258. of

  2259. this

  2260. temptation

  2261. is

  2262. authority

  2263. and

  2264. glory

  2265. in

  2266. this

  2267. world

  2268. because

  2269. Jesus

  2270. actually

  2271. has

  2272. been

  2273. promised

  2274. authority

  2275. and

  2276. glory

  2277. he

  2278. is

  2279. destined

  2280. to

  2281. rule

  2282. as

  2283. the

  2284. son

  2285. of

  2286. God

  2287. as

  2288. the

  2289. messianic

  2290. king

  2291. so

  2292. once

  2293. again

  2294. it's

  2295. not

  2296. wrong

  2297. for

  2298. the

  2299. son

  2300. of

  2301. God

  2302. to

  2303. seek

  2304. these

  2305. things

  2306. the

  2307. problem

  2308. is

  2309. in

  2310. the

  2311. way

  2312. in

  2313. which

  2314. the

  2315. son

  2316. of

  2317. God

  2318. claims

  2319. this

  2320. authority

  2321. and

  2322. glory

  2323. because

  2324. God

  2325. the

  2326. father

  2327. has

  2328. appointed

  2329. that

  2330. his

  2331. son

  2332. would

  2333. attain

  2334. glory

  2335. through

  2336. the

  2337. humiliation

  2338. of

  2339. the

  2340. cross

  2341. and

  2342. through

  2343. his

  2344. death

  2345. because

  2346. God

  2347. the

  2348. father

  2349. has

  2350. appointed

  2351. that

  2352. his

  2353. son

  2354. would

  2355. attain

  2356. authority

  2357. through

  2358. service

  2359. but

  2360. this

  2361. is a

  2362. temptation

  2363. to

  2364. short

  2365. circuit

  2366. that

  2367. divine

  2368. ordained

  2369. process

  2370. aren't

  2371. you

  2372. the

  2373. son

  2374. of

  2375. God

  2376. isn't

  2377. all

  2378. this

  2379. authority

  2380. and

  2381. glory

  2382. supposed

  2383. to

  2384. be

  2385. yours

  2386. well

  2387. then

  2388. take

  2389. it

  2390. I

  2391. offer

  2392. it

  2393. to

  2394. you

  2395. here

  2396. all

  2397. you

  2398. have

  2399. to

  2400. do

  2401. is

  2402. renounce

  2403. your

  2404. allegiance

  2405. to

  2406. God

  2407. pledge

  2408. your

  2409. allegiance

  2410. to

  2411. me

  2412. bow

  2413. down

  2414. to

  2415. me

  2416. and

  2417. worship

  2418. me

  2419. and

  2420. Jesus

  2421. answers

  2422. the devil

  2423. by quoting

  2424. scripture

  2425. once again

  2426. in verse

  2427. 8

  2428. it is

  2429. written

  2430. you

  2431. shall

  2432. worship

  2433. the

  2434. Lord

  2435. your

  2436. God

  2437. and

  2438. him

  2439. only

  2440. shall

  2441. you

  2442. serve

  2443. this

  2444. is

  2445. a

  2446. quotation

  2447. from

  2448. Deuteronomy

  2449. 6

  2450. 13

  2451. to

  2452. 14

  2453. and

  2454. recalls

  2455. Israel's

  2456. idolatry

  2457. in the

  2458. wilderness

  2459. in

  2460. Exodus

  2461. 32

  2462. when

  2463. they

  2464. make

  2465. golden

  2466. calf

  2467. and worship

  2468. it

  2469. as

  2470. their

  2471. God

  2472. in

  2473. Moses

  2474. absence

  2475. when

  2476. he

  2477. was

  2478. receiving

  2479. the

  2480. covenant

  2481. laws

  2482. actually

  2483. fasting

  2484. they

  2485. recognized

  2486. that

  2487. they

  2488. need

  2489. divine

  2490. sponsorship

  2491. in order

  2492. to be

  2493. successful

  2494. in their

  2495. conquest

  2496. of the

  2497. promised

  2498. land

  2499. but

  2500. since

  2501. their

  2502. conquest

  2503. was not

  2504. about

  2505. the glory

  2506. of God

  2507. it was

  2508. not about

  2509. pursuing

  2510. God

  2511. but because

  2512. it was

  2513. about

  2514. their

  2515. national

  2516. glory

  2517. as

  2518. Israel

  2519. because

  2520. it was

  2521. for

  2522. them

  2523. and not

  2524. for

  2525. God

  2526. they

  2527. quickly

  2528. when

  2529. they

  2530. realized

  2531. that

  2532. God's

  2533. not

  2534. with

  2535. him

  2536. this

  2537. golden

  2538. calf

  2539. this

  2540. temptation

  2541. is

  2542. about

  2543. ambition

  2544. selfish

  2545. ambition

  2546. leads

  2547. to

  2548. idolatry

  2549. and

  2550. whether

  2551. or not

  2552. we have

  2553. godly

  2554. ambition

  2555. or

  2556. selfish

  2557. ambition

  2558. is

  2559. revealed

  2560. by

  2561. what

  2562. costs

  2563. we're

  2564. willing

  2565. to pay

  2566. to

  2567. fulfill

  2568. that

  2569. ambition

  2570. are

  2571. you

  2572. willing

  2573. to

  2574. compromise

  2575. your

  2576. principles

  2577. in order

  2578. to

  2579. climb

  2580. the

  2581. ladder

  2582. of

  2583. success

  2584. yes

  2585. you

  2586. want

  2587. to do

  2588. great

  2589. things

  2590. for

  2591. God

  2592. that's

  2593. great

  2594. but

  2595. is

  2596. that

  2597. really

  2598. for

  2599. God

  2600. or

  2601. is

  2602. that

  2603. for

  2604. you

  2605. yes

  2606. you

  2607. want

  2608. that

  2609. promotion

  2610. yes

  2611. you

  2612. want

  2613. that

  2614. job

  2615. yes

  2616. you

  2617. want

  2618. to

  2619. get

  2620. into

  2621. that

  2622. school

  2623. but

  2624. is

  2625. that

  2626. really

  2627. for

  2628. God

  2629. or

  2630. is

  2631. that

  2632. for

  2633. you

  2634. are

  2635. you

  2636. willing

  2637. to

  2638. neglect

  2639. your

  2640. love

  2641. for

  2642. God

  2643. to

  2644. put

  2645. your

  2646. pursuit

  2647. of

  2648. God

  2649. on

  2650. the

  2651. back

  2652. burner

  2653. so

  2654. that

  2655. you

  2656. can

  2657. pursue

  2658. those

  2659. things

  2660. if so

  2661. that's

  2662. an

  2663. indicator

  2664. that

  2665. you've

  2666. succumbed

  2667. to

  2668. this

  2669. temptation

  2670. of

  2671. ambition

  2672. Jesus

  2673. refused

  2674. to

  2675. serve

  2676. himself

  2677. the

  2678. Lord

  2679. only

  2680. he

  2681. says

  2682. I

  2683. will

  2684. serve

  2685. the

  2686. third

  2687. and

  2688. final

  2689. temptation

  2690. we

  2691. see

  2692. is

  2693. the

  2694. temptation

  2695. of

  2696. affirmation

  2697. he

  2698. says

  2699. in

  2700. verses

  2701. 9

  2702. to

  2703. 11

  2704. and

  2705. he

  2706. took

  2707. him

  2708. to

  2709. Jerusalem

  2710. and

  2711. set

  2712. him

  2713. on

  2714. the

  2736. it

  2739. he

  2760. the

  2762. perhaps

  2763. catching

  2764. on that

  2765. Jesus

  2766. was

  2767. answering

  2768. all his

  2769. temptations

  2770. satisfactorily

  2771. from

  2772. scripture

  2773. the devil

  2774. tries to

  2799. like

  2800. heretics

  2801. is

  2802. quick

  2803. to

  2804. quote

  2805. scripture

  2806. the

  2807. fact

  2808. that

  2809. you

  2810. can

  2811. quote

  2812. scripture

  2813. doesn't

  2814. necessarily

  2815. mean

  2816. that

  2817. you

  2818. are

  2819. saying

  2820. something

  2821. that

  2822. is

  2823. actually

  2824. scriptural

  2825. because

  2826. people

  2827. often

  2828. misquote

  2829. scripture

  2830. and

  2831. manipulate

  2832. it

  2833. for

  2834. their

  2837. as

  2852. the

  2853. text

  2854. without

  2855. its

  2857. is

  2858. a

  2859. pretext

  2860. in

  2861. its

  2862. original

  2863. context

  2864. Psalm

  2865. 91

  2866. spoke

  2867. about

  2868. how

  2869. God

  2870. will

  2871. guard

  2872. and

  2873. protect

  2874. us

  2875. as we

  2876. walk

  2877. with

  2878. him

  2879. and

  2880. trust

  2881. in

  2882. him

  2883. right

  2884. the

  2885. psalm

  2886. called

  2887. for

  2888. humble

  2889. submission

  2890. dependence

  2891. on God

  2892. walking

  2893. with him

  2894. entrusting

  2895. yourself

  2896. to him

  2897. but the

  2898. devil

  2899. is

  2900. tempting

  2901. Jesus

  2902. instead

  2903. to

  2904. presume

  2905. on that

  2906. and to

  2907. take

  2908. things

  2909. out of

  2910. God's

  2911. hands

  2912. and into

  2913. his own

  2914. this is a

  2915. temptation

  2916. of affirmation

  2917. that puts

  2918. man

  2919. not God

  2920. at

  2921. the center

  2922. it puts

  2923. man on

  2924. the driver's

  2925. seat

  2926. aren't

  2927. you

  2928. the

  2930. of

  2931. God

  2932. make

  2933. God

  2934. prove

  2935. his

  2936. care

  2937. and

  2938. protection

  2939. by

  2940. jumping

  2941. off

  2942. the

  2943. temple

  2944. notice

  2945. that

  2946. the devil

  2947. doesn't

  2948. just

  2949. take

  2950. him

  2951. to

  2952. a

  2953. high

  2954. mountain

  2955. any

  2956. high

  2957. mountain

  2958. would

  2959. have

  2960. done

  2961. if

  2962. it

  2963. were

  2964. just

  2965. about

  2966. jumping

  2967. off

  2968. and

  2969. trusting

  2970. him

  2971. but

  2972. he

  2973. takes

  2974. him

  2975. to

  2976. the

  2977. pinnacle

  2978. of

  2979. the

  2980. temple

  2981. why

  2982. because

  2983. that's

  2984. the

  2985. house

  2986. of

  2987. God

  2988. here

  2989. surely

  2990. God

  2991. is

  2992. in

  2993. this

  2994. place

  2995. let's

  2996. do

  2997. a

  2998. little

  2999. trust

  3000. fall

  3001. throw

  3002. yourself

  3003. make

  3004. God

  3005. prove

  3006. his

  3007. care

  3008. and

  3009. protection

  3010. for

  3011. you

  3012. but

  3013. Jesus

  3014. once

  3015. again

  3016. rebuffs

  3017. Satan

  3018. with

  3019. scripture

  3020. he

  3021. quotes

  3022. from

  3023. Deuteronomy

  3024. 616

  3025. in

  3026. verse

  3027. 12

  3028. it

  3029. is

  3030. said

  3031. you

  3032. shall

  3033. not

  3034. put

  3035. the

  3036. Lord

  3037. your

  3038. God

  3039. to

  3040. the

  3041. test

  3042. Deuteronomy

  3043. 616

  3044. mentions

  3045. this

  3046. that

  3047. you

  3048. shall

  3049. not

  3050. put

  3051. the

  3052. Lord

  3053. your

  3054. God

  3055. to

  3056. the

  3057. test

  3058. as

  3059. you

  3060. tested

  3061. him

  3062. in

  3063. Massa

  3064. and

  3065. about

  3066. this

  3067. incident

  3068. this

  3069. is

  3070. when

  3071. the

  3072. Israelites

  3073. doubted

  3074. God's

  3075. provision

  3076. of

  3077. water

  3078. they

  3079. said

  3080. there's

  3081. no

  3082. water

  3083. to

  3084. drink

  3085. in

  3086. this

  3087. wilderness

  3088. it

  3089. would

  3090. have

  3091. been

  3092. better

  3093. for

  3094. us

  3095. to

  3096. stay

  3097. in

  3098. Egypt

  3099. why

  3100. did

  3101. you

  3102. bring

  3103. me

  3104. out

  3105. of

  3106. Egypt

  3107. and

  3108. about

  3109. this

  3110. incident

  3111. Exodus

  3112. 17

  3113. 7

  3114. says

  3115. that

  3116. and

  3117. he

  3118. called

  3119. the

  3120. name

  3121. of

  3122. the

  3123. place

  3124. Massa

  3125. in

  3126. Meribah

  3127. because

  3128. of

  3129. the

  3130. quarreling

  3131. of

  3132. the

  3133. people

  3134. the

  3135. temptation

  3136. of

  3137. affirmation

  3138. is

  3139. the

  3140. Lord

  3141. among

  3142. us

  3143. or

  3144. not

  3145. does

  3146. God

  3147. care

  3148. about

  3149. us

  3150. or

  3151. not

  3152. Jesus

  3153. is

  3154. being

  3155. tempted

  3156. to

  3157. test

  3158. the

  3159. father's

  3160. approval

  3161. of

  3162. him

  3163. as

  3164. his

  3165. son

  3166. rather

  3167. than

  3168. trusting

  3169. him

  3170. and

  3171. Satan

  3172. trying

  3173. to

  3174. get

  3175. him

  3176. to

  3177. create

  3178. this

  3179. artificial

  3180. situation

  3181. to

  3182. force

  3183. God's

  3184. hand

  3185. to

  3186. show

  3187. his

  3188. care

  3189. how

  3190. often

  3191. do

  3192. we

  3193. do

  3194. this

  3195. if

  3196. you

  3197. heal

  3198. me

  3199. if

  3200. you

  3201. heal

  3202. my

  3203. child

  3204. of

  3205. this

  3206. disease

  3207. then

  3208. I

  3209. will

  3210. know

  3211. that

  3212. you

  3213. are

  3214. there

  3215. for

  3216. me

  3217. and

  3218. care

  3219. for

  3220. me

  3221. if

  3222. you

  3223. do

  3224. this

  3225. for

  3226. me

  3227. then

  3228. I

  3229. will

  3230. believe

  3231. if

  3232. you

  3233. do

  3234. this

  3235. for

  3236. me

  3237. then

  3238. I

  3239. will

  3240. know

  3241. and

  3242. I

  3243. will

  3244. be

  3245. your

  3246. loyal

  3247. servant

  3248. me

  3249. me

  3250. puts

  3251. man

  3252. at

  3253. the

  3254. center

  3255. instead

  3256. of

  3257. submitting

  3258. humbly

  3259. to

  3260. God

  3261. and

  3262. following

  3263. God

  3264. as

  3265. the

  3266. center

  3267. and

  3268. the

  3269. driving

  3270. point

  3271. of

  3272. our

  3273. lives

  3274. Jesus

  3275. succeeds

  3276. here

  3277. where

  3278. Israel

  3279. had

  3280. failed

  3281. and

  3282. this

  3283. should

  3284. be a

  3285. consolation

  3286. for

  3287. us

  3288. because

  3289. how many

  3290. times

  3291. have

  3292. we

  3293. fallen

  3294. to

  3295. all

  3296. of

  3297. these

  3298. temptations

  3299. the

  3300. temptations

  3301. of

  3302. affirmation

  3303. of

  3304. ambition

  3305. the

  3306. temptations

  3307. of our

  3308. appetite

  3309. we have

  3310. fallen

  3311. again

  3312. and again

  3313. and again

  3314. and again

  3315. so that

  3316. we have

  3317. no hope

  3318. of being

  3319. reconciled

  3320. to God

  3321. but that's

  3322. why Jesus

  3323. came as a

  3324. representative

  3325. and it

  3326. says in

  3327. verse 13

  3328. something very

  3329. provocative

  3330. and when

  3331. the devil

  3332. had ended

  3333. every

  3334. temptation

  3335. he departed

  3336. from him

  3337. until

  3338. an

  3339. opportune

  3340. time

  3341. Jesus

  3342. is not

  3343. confronted

  3344. directly by

  3345. Satan

  3346. the devil

  3347. between

  3348. chapter 4

  3349. verse 13

  3350. here and

  3351. chapter 22

  3352. verse 3

  3353. in the gospel

  3354. of Luke

  3355. he does

  3356. confront

  3357. minor demons

  3358. and unclean

  3359. spirits

  3360. in between

  3361. but

  3362. there's no

  3363. direct

  3364. confrontation

  3365. with Satan

  3366. the devil

  3367. when

  3368. does

  3369. Satan

  3370. return

  3371. why

  3372. is the

  3373. statement

  3374. here

  3375. because

  3376. the

  3377. opportune

  3378. time

  3379. is when

  3380. Jesus

  3381. is taken

  3382. to the

  3383. cross

  3384. because

  3385. we have

  3386. failed

  3387. because

  3388. we had

  3389. succumb

  3390. to the

  3391. temptations

  3392. of appetite

  3393. and of

  3394. affirmation

  3395. and ambition

  3396. because we

  3397. have failed

  3398. in these

  3399. ways

  3400. someone

  3401. has to

  3402. stand

  3403. for us

  3404. someone

  3405. has to

  3406. pay

  3407. for our

  3408. sins

  3409. someone

  3410. has to

  3411. stand

  3412. in our

  3413. place

  3414. to bear

  3415. the

  3416. punishment

  3417. the guilt

  3418. that we

  3419. have incurred

  3420. for ourselves

  3421. and so

  3422. that opportune

  3423. time comes

  3424. this son

  3425. of man

  3426. this son

  3427. of God

  3428. who should

  3429. never

  3430. be

  3431. never be

  3432. subjected

  3433. to the

  3434. work of

  3435. the evil

  3436. one

  3437. who should

  3438. never be

  3439. subjected

  3440. to the

  3441. penalties

  3442. of sin

  3443. to him

  3444. that moment

  3445. that should

  3446. not have

  3447. come

  3448. comes

  3449. because he

  3450. takes our

  3451. place

  3452. and dies

  3453. on the

  3454. cross

  3455. in our

  3456. stead

  3457. and so

  3458. that

  3459. for all

  3460. those who

  3461. repent of

  3462. their sins

  3463. and believe

  3464. in Jesus

  3465. Christ

  3466. we become

  3467. adopted

  3468. children

  3469. of God

  3470. he takes

  3471. runaway

  3472. slaves

  3473. and adopts

  3474. them as

  3475. his own

  3476. through

  3477. Jesus

  3478. Christ

  3479. he takes

  3480. rebels

  3481. and restores

  3482. them to

  3483. as heirs

  3484. of his

  3485. inheritance

  3486. that's what

  3487. God the

  3488. father does

  3489. through his

  3490. son

  3491. Jesus

  3492. Christ

  3493. because

  3494. Jesus

  3495. is the

  3496. son of

  3497. God

  3498. who

  3499. represents

  3500. and restores

  3501. humanity

  3502. to their

  3503. rightful

  3504. relationship

  3505. with

  3506. God

  3507. long

  3508. long

  3509. long

  3510. after

  3511. that

  3512. voice

  3513. from

  3514. heaven

  3515. saying

  3516. this

  3517. is

  3518. my

  3519. beloved

  3520. son

  3521. have

  3522. faded

  3523. and receded

  3524. into the

  3525. background

  3526. in the

  3527. wilderness

  3528. of 40

  3529. days

  3530. of fasting

  3531. and when

  3532. he's receiving

  3533. these temptations

  3534. Jesus

  3535. must hold fast

  3536. to his

  3537. identity

  3538. as the

  3539. son of

  3540. God

  3541. and that's

  3542. our

  3543. calling

  3544. for us

  3545. as well

  3546. when you're

  3547. tempted

  3548. in these

  3549. ways to

  3550. neglect

  3551. that

  3552. when you're

  3553. tempted

  3554. to question

  3555. when the

  3556. devil asks

  3557. you

  3558. aren't you

  3559. the child

  3560. of God

  3561. does God

  3562. really care

  3563. is he really

  3564. with you

  3565. you must

  3566. remember the

  3567. voice of God

  3568. that says

  3569. this is my

  3570. beloved

  3571. child

  3572. perhaps you're

  3573. telling yourself

  3574. sure if I

  3575. heard the

  3576. voice of

  3577. God

  3578. speaking from

  3579. heaven

  3580. announcing that

  3581. I'm the

  3582. child of

  3583. God

  3584. well then I

  3585. too will

  3586. have unwavering

  3587. faith

  3588. like Jesus

  3589. but we

  3590. do have

  3591. that assurance

  3592. because Romans

  3593. 8 15

  3594. to 16

  3595. tells us

  3596. this

  3597. we have

  3598. we do not

  3599. receive

  3600. the spirit

  3601. of slavery

  3602. to fall

  3603. back into

  3604. fear

  3605. but you

  3606. have received

  3607. the spirit

  3608. of adoption

  3609. as sons

  3610. by whom

  3611. we cry

  3612. Abba

  3613. father

  3614. the spirit

  3615. himself bears

  3616. witness with

  3617. our spirit

  3618. that we

  3619. are children

  3620. of God

  3621. this is not

  3622. projected

  3623. there but

  3624. continues in

  3625. verse 17

  3626. if children

  3627. then heirs

  3628. heirs of

  3629. God and

  3630. fellow heirs

  3631. with Christ

  3632. provided we

  3633. suffer with

  3634. him in order

  3635. that we may

  3636. also be

  3637. glorified

  3638. with him

  3639. we have

  3640. the very

  3641. spirit of

  3642. God

  3643. the same

  3644. spirit of

  3645. God who

  3646. descended like

  3647. a dove

  3648. unto Jesus

  3649. we have

  3650. the very

  3651. spirit of

  3652. God

  3653. indwelling

  3654. us

  3655. and assuring

  3656. us

  3657. that we

  3658. are adopted

  3659. children of

  3660. God

  3661. so that we

  3662. can cry

  3663. out to

  3664. God the

  3665. father

  3666. as Abba

  3667. father

  3668. and that

  3669. we can

  3670. be assured

  3671. that we

  3672. are heirs

  3673. with Jesus

  3674. Christ

  3675. that he

  3676. is our

  3677. fellow heir

  3678. that he

  3679. is our

  3680. brother

  3681. in the

  3682. kingdom

  3683. of God

  3684. that we

  3685. will be

  3686. glorified

  3687. with him

  3688. because we

  3689. have that

  3690. assurance

  3691. we can

  3692. stand fast

  3693. in temptations

  3694. hold fast

  3695. to our

  3696. identity

  3697. we are

  3698. children of

  3699. God

  3700. take a

  3701. moment now

  3702. to just

  3703. reflect on

  3704. that reality

  3705. in what

  3706. ways has

  3707. Satan

  3708. challenged

  3709. your identity

  3710. in Christ

  3711. in what

  3712. ways have

  3713. you

  3714. failed to

  3715. trust

  3716. Christ

  3717. as the

  3718. son of

  3719. God

  3720. who

  3721. restores

  3722. you

  3723. to right

  3724. relationship

  3725. with him

  3726. take a

  3727. moment and

  3728. afterward we

  3729. will respond

  3730. by praying

  3731. out loud

  3732. together

  3733. as a

  3734. church

  3735. you
