  1. Luke chapter 6 verses 37 to 49.

    Luke 6:37–49

  2. He also told them a parable.

  3. Can a blind man lead a blind man?

  4. Will they not both fall into a pit?

  5. A disciple is not above his teacher, but everyone, when he is fully trained, will be like his teacher.

  6. Why do you see the speck that is in your brother's eye, but do not notice the log that is in your own eye?

  7. How can you say to your brother,

  8. Brother, let me take out the speck that is in your eye.

  9. When you yourself do not see the log that is in your own eye, you hypocrite.

  10. First take the log out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to take out the speck that is in your brother's eye.

  11. For no good tree bears bad fruit, nor again does a bad tree bear good fruit.

  12. For each tree is known by its own fruit.

  13. For figs are not gathered from thorn bushes, nor are grapes picked from a bramble bush.

  14. The good person, out of the good treasure of his heart, produces good.

  15. And the evil person, out of his evil treasure, produces evil.

  16. For out of the abundance of the heart, his mouth speaks.

  17. Why do you call me, Lord, Lord, and not do what I tell you?

  18. Everyone who comes to me and hears my words and does them, I will show you what he is like.

  19. He is like a man building a house, who dug deep and laid the foundation on the rock.

  20. And when a flood arose, the stream broke against that house and could not shake it, because it had been well built.

  21. But the one who hears and does not do them is like a man who built a house on the ground without a foundation.

  22. When the stream broke against it, immediately it fell, and the ruin of that house was great.

  23. This is God's authoritative word.

  24. Heavenly Father, we come to you now wanting to hear from you.

  25. Lord, apart from the humility that Christ exemplified for us, we cannot rightly hear this message.

  26. To peel back our self-righteousness, our pride.

  27. To humble ourselves.

  28. To follow you, who alone is the true teacher.

  29. That can lead us to eternal life and salvation.

  30. So won't you please lead us, speak to us through your word.

  31. Humble us and help us to believe and obey.

  32. In Jesus' name we pray.

  33. Amen.

  34. Last week we studied the core of Jesus' ethical teaching.

  35. And the command to love our neighbors as ourselves.

  36. And the command even to love our enemies.

  37. And do good even to those who hate us and who do no good to us.

  38. And in today's passage, Jesus concludes teaching by really calling for self-examination.

  39. That are we true followers of Christ or not?

  40. What do true followers of Christ look like?

  41. And the main point of this passage is that we should follow Christ,

  42. who is the good teacher that saves us from our sins.

  43. And we'll just go through the sections.

  44. Forgiveness of Christ, follower of Christ, fruit of Christ,

  45. and the foundation of Christ that Jesus talks about in turn.

  46. And in the first section that I'm covering, verses 37 to 38,

  47. I read it last week because it's actually really part of last week's passage that I read.

  48. It fits better in that context.

  49. But because the sermon was getting too long, I didn't preach that.

  50. So I'm just going to tack this on to the last week's message if I can and go with the rest of it.

  51. Because in the preceding passage, Jesus taught us to love our enemies and do good even to those who are evil

  52. because we're imitating our heavenly Father.

  53. And verse 36 ended by saying,

  54. And so 37 and 38 are really continuing that thought, explaining what being merciful looks like.

  55. And Jesus explains that command to be merciful by giving two further negative commands

  56. and two positive commands that go with that.

  57. So he says,

  58. Judge not, and you will not be judged.

  59. Condemn not, and you will not be condemned.

  60. Forgive, and you will be forgiven.

  61. Give, and it will be given to you.

  62. This is a favorite verse that non-Christians like to quote two Christians.

  63. Maybe you've had this quoted to you before.

  64. Didn't Jesus teach you not to judge?

  65. Stop telling me that what I'm doing is sinful.

  66. You're so judgmental.

  67. However, the command not to judge here does not mean that we cannot form any kind of moral judgments.

  68. If you believe in any kind of morality, you have to form moral judgments in order to function in society, right?

  69. You have to be able to say that some things are morally right while other things are morally wrong.

  70. That kind of judgment is fundamental to and necessary for anyone who has a conscience.

  71. So the command to judge not does not mean that you shouldn't form any moral judgments.

  72. If that were the case, there would be no rule of law, no courts, no church discipline,

  73. which blatantly contradicts the teaching of Scripture from other places.

  74. So the command to judge not is rather more helpfully explained by the parallel phrase in verse 37.

  75. Condemn not.

  76. There's nothing wrong with calling sin a sin,

  77. as long as that moral judgment is shared with love

  78. and an earnest desire that that person would repent from his or her sin

  79. and turn to God for forgiveness.

  80. But when we judge, not inviting them toward God's mercy,

  81. but instead shunning them with condemnation,

  82. we're disobeying Jesus' command.

  83. If we're self-righteous, if instead of mourning over people's sins,

  84. we are gloating over their sins

  85. and eagerly pointing the finger of condemnation toward them,

  86. then we're disobeying Jesus' command.

  87. So in that case, we're placing ourselves in the seat of God's judgment

  88. where only He deserves to sit.

  89. And if we presume to sit on God's judgment seat by condemning others,

  90. God Himself says that He will condemn us.

  91. The assumed subject of the passive verbs in verses 37 and 38 is God.

  92. Judge not, and you will not be judged by God.

  93. Condemn not, and you will not be condemned by God.

  94. Forgive, and you will be forgiven by God.

  95. Give, and it will be given to you by God.

  96. This is what Greek grammarians call the divine passive.

  97. It assumes that God's the one who's acting and working in us and doing these things.

  98. And earlier in verse 31, Jesus commanded us,

  99. As you wish that others would do to you, do so to them.

  100. And so here in verses 37 and 38, God promised that as we do to others, He will do to us.

  101. This does not mean that we are saved by our good works.

  102. Salvation is a gift from God.

  103. We are saved by God.

  104. We are saved by God's grace through faith in Jesus Christ.

  105. But those who are saved do good works.

  106. You guys see the difference?

  107. And because those who are saved do good works,

  108. our good works become the basis for God's judgment in the end.

  109. We are saved by grace, but judged by our works.

  110. This is why we are commanded in Ephesians chapter 4, verse 32,

    Ephesians 4:32

  111. to forgive one another as God in Christ forgave you.

  112. It's because God has already forgiven us.

  113. We are to forgive one another.

  114. And God's forgiveness is the basis for our forgiveness.

  115. And for this reason, when we don't forgive one another,

  116. God will judge us as unforgiven people.

  117. We will not receive His forgiveness on the day of judgment.

  118. That's the meaning of condemn not, and you will not be condemned.

  119. Forgive, and you will be forgiven.

  120. And because forgiveness involves bearing the pain

  121. and really the cost of that person's offense against you,

  122. it's naturally connected to the idea of giving.

  123. And verse 38 says,

  124. Give, and it will be given to you.

  125. In the same way that we generously offer forgiveness to those who wrong us,

  126. we are to give generously of our finances as well.

  127. And Jesus promises this to those who are generous.

  128. He says,

  129. Good measure, pressed down, shaken together,

  130. running over will be put into your lap.

  131. For with the measure you use,

  132. it will be measured back to you.

  133. This is an illustration from kind of farming and commerce of agricultural goods.

  134. For example, when selling corn kernels in this day and age,

  135. they would really pour a measure into a container.

  136. And they would shake it up to make sure that it occupies all this,

  137. there's no empty space in the container.

  138. And they would press it down to make sure that there is no extra room.

  139. They'll pour some more, then they shall get some more.

  140. And then they'll literally, in order to give a full measure,

  141. keep on top of it so that it's overflowing,

  142. and then pour that into someone's lap

  143. to ensure that they are not getting deprived or cheated in any way.

  144. So that's a way a very generous seller would pour,

  145. lavish this thing that they're getting from them.

  146. And that's what God promises.

  147. If you give generously, if you give to others,

  148. I will pour back to you in good measure,

  149. pressed down, shaken together, running over onto your lap.

  150. And then for with the measure you use,

  151. it will be measured back to you.

  152. And this is consistent with the way God has taught us throughout Scripture.

  153. In Proverbs 11, 24 to 25,

  154. It says,

  155. To give to those who don't do evil to us,

  156. and to lend to those,

  157. give to those who have no way of returning the favor in any way.

  158. Because the reason, the basis for this is that God will reward us.

  159. If you give to poor who cannot repay you,

  160. God will reward you for that.

  161. And so entrusting ourselves to God's repayment

  162. is what enables us to give selflessly and sacrificially in this life,

  163. without expecting anything in return.

  164. And so then that tells us that the key to Christian generosity

  165. is not wealth,

  166. but faith in God's generosity.

  167. We give not out of the abundance of wealth,

  168. but out of the abundance of faith

  169. that God, who is generous, will give.

  170. That's the first point.

  171. And the second point,

  172. we see what it means to be the follower of Christ,

  173. the forgiveness of Christ.

  174. It goes with last week's passage.

  175. And here, Jesus really is concluding

  176. His main ethical teaching,

  177. and starting in verse 39,

  178. He calls His followers to self-examination,

  179. and He exhorts them to respond to His teaching

  180. by following Him and obeying His commands.

  181. So He begins in verse 39.

  182. He also told them a parable.

  183. Can a blind man lead a blind man?

  184. Will they not both fall into a pit?

  185. So Jesus uses two illustrations here

  186. to make the point that His hearers should follow Him.

  187. First illustration is one of a blind man, right?

  188. Following a blind man.

  189. And of course, it's absurd for a blind man

  190. to try to lead another blind man.

  191. And Jesus uses this picture to warn His disciples

  192. that they should be careful whom they follow.

  193. Because following someone who is spiritually blind

  194. will lead them to fall into a pit.

  195. And as I mentioned last week,

  196. Jesus' teaching here is directed primarily

  197. at His disciples.

  198. But there is a larger crowd,

  199. those who are around Him,

  200. that are not His disciples,

  201. which includes probably His critics,

  202. the Pharisees and the scribes as well.

  203. They're part of the great multitude of the people

  204. who are not His disciples.

  205. And especially because Jesus' teaching

  206. was preceded by,

  207. His sermon on the plain

  208. was preceded by His confrontation with the Pharisees.

  209. It's hard to ignore the fact

  210. that Jesus has the Pharisees in mind

  211. in the background as He says this.

  212. And in Matthew 15, 14,

  213. actually Jesus explicitly calls out the Pharisees

  214. as blind guides.

  215. So He says,

  216. If the blind lead the blind,

  217. both will fall into a pit.

  218. And Jesus makes a follow-up point in verse 40.

  219. A disciple is not above his teacher,

  220. but everyone, when he is fully trained,

  221. will be like his teacher.

  222. In the ancient world,

  223. the teacher-disciple-student relationship

  224. was much more personal and intimate

  225. than it is now.

  226. Nowadays, there's a lot more self-study, right?

  227. Because there's an abundance of books

  228. and other digital resources

  229. that we can access so readily available.

  230. But in the ancient world,

  231. they didn't have that,

  232. so the students follow their teachers around everywhere,

  233. and they would watch them

  234. and learn from their example,

  235. and they would learn through oral instruction primarily,

  236. if the teacher is teaching them

  237. in what they say to them.

  238. And so given that background,

  239. Jesus is teaching His disciples

  240. that the teacher sets the upper limit,

  241. the ceiling of what the disciples can learn

  242. and become.

  243. And so because of that,

  244. they should be all the more thoughtful and careful

  245. about whom they choose to follow as their teacher.

  246. The implication.

  247. The implication, of course,

  248. is that they should not follow blind guides

  249. like the Pharisees,

  250. but that they should follow Him

  251. and seek to become more like Him.

  252. So who would you say are the people in your life

  253. that you follow?

  254. Who are the teachers in your life?

  255. The one you tend to rely on for guidance in life.

  256. Maybe it's a college professor,

  257. a pastor, or a community group leader,

  258. an author,

  259. a YouTube personality?

  260. Whoever it might be,

  261. you should make sure that your teacher

  262. is following Christ.

  263. Because you're going to end up where he or she is.

  264. And if you are someone that others look up to and follow,

  265. then you should make sure that you are not blind

  266. and that you are faithfully following Christ.

  267. As Robert Murray Mishane,

  268. he's a 19th century Scottish pastor,

  269. he once famously said this,

  270. the greatest need of my people

  271. is my own holiness.

  272. Your followers will become like you.

  273. That's a sobering thought

  274. that should make any aspiring leader tremble.

  275. Makes me tremble.

  276. Continuing the theme of spiritual sight,

  277. Jesus says in verses 41 to 42,

  278. Why do you see the speck

  279. that is in your brother's eye,

  280. but do not notice the log

  281. that is in your own eye?

  282. How can you say to your brother,

  283. Brother, let me take out the speck

  284. that is in your eye.

  285. When you yourself do not see the log

  286. that is in your own eye,

  287. you hypocrite.

  288. First, take the log out of your own eye

  289. and then you will see clearly

  290. to take out the speck

  291. that is in your brother's eye.

  292. The word log refers to

  293. one of the main beams of a house.

  294. When you're building a house,

  295. like that cross beam

  296. that goes through the entire structure.

  297. And speck refers to a small flake of wood,

  298. something like sawdust maybe

  299. that you've seen before.

  300. And so imagine two construction workers

  301. building a house together

  302. and one of them has the cross beam

  303. of the house sticking out of his eye.

  304. Obviously, that's not even possible.

  305. He'd be dead, right?

  306. But just imagine the scene.

  307. And this is supposed to be funny.

  308. And he looks at his co-worker

  309. who has a little sawdust in his eye

  310. and he looks to him and says,

  311. Hey, man, hey,

  312. you have sawdust in your eye.

  313. Come here.

  314. Let me get that out for you.

  315. It's ridiculous, right?

  316. It's Jesus using a humorous illustration

  317. to expose our prideful human tendency

  318. to be hyper-aware of the shortcomings

  319. and sins of other people

  320. but unaware of our own shortcomings and sins.

  321. That's a natural human sinful tendency.

  322. Jesus calls this man with the log in his eye

  323. a hypocrite,

  324. which in the Greek means actor or pretender.

  325. The man is a pretender

  326. because if he were really serious

  327. about dealing with sin,

  328. he would have dealt with his own sin,

  329. own graver sins,

  330. before confronting his brother.

  331. But instead, consciously or not,

  332. he pretends to be concerned

  333. for the holiness of his brother

  334. when he is really primarily concerned

  335. with elevating himself above his brother.

  336. It's so easy to fall into this kind of hypocrisy, isn't it?

  337. A boss at work berates an employee

  338. for a small mistake that he made,

  339. pointing out the fact that he has no attention to detail

  340. and that he is incompetent

  341. and wasting his time and pay.

  342. But as he does this,

  343. he fails to see that his self-righteousness,

  344. unrighteousness, prideful judgment,

  345. excessive anger, and harsh speech

  346. are far bigger problems

  347. than his employees' lack of attention to detail.

  348. A wife seems lonely and depressed

  349. and asks her husband to stay home one evening

  350. to spend time with her

  351. instead of going out to the work social.

  352. The husband responds by trying to remove

  353. the speck from her eye,

  354. giving a sanctimonious lecture

  355. on how much he sacrifices for her,

  356. telling her callously

  357. that she just needs to be more joyful in the Lord,

  358. and finally accusing her of being selfish

  359. and needy.

  360. But as he does this,

  361. the husband fails to see

  362. the log in his own eye,

  363. that because of his daily evening ritual

  364. of sports watching and video gaming,

  365. and because of his weekly weekend ritual

  366. of golf outings with his buddies,

  367. that he has hardly nourished and cherished his wife

  368. as the Bible calls him to,

  369. and his selfishness and neglect of his wife

  370. are far greater faults before the eyes of God

  371. than his wife's despondency.

  372. He's like an ophthalmologist

  373. trying to perform a delicate eye surgery

  374. while he himself has a golf ball-sized cataract

  375. in his eyes

  376. that prevents him from seeing clearly.

  377. Now, all this to say,

  378. this doesn't mean that,

  379. as Christians,

  380. we can never bring correction

  381. to a fellow believer.

  382. Colossians 3.16 tells us,

  383. Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly,

  384. teaching and admonishing one another

  385. in all wisdom.

  386. We're commanded,

  387. every single believer,

  388. to admonish one another,

  389. to speak the truth in love to one another.

  390. The Bible commands this.

  391. But it does mean

  392. that we should examine ourselves

  393. and acknowledge our own faults

  394. and confess our own sins

  395. before confronting someone else.

  396. Our own shortcomings and sins

  397. can blind us from seeing other people's

  398. shortcomings and sins clearly.

  399. So what are some logs in your life?

  400. Of course, the trouble is that

  401. for some of us,

  402. we have had these logs

  403. lodged in our eyes for so long,

  404. it's hard for us to see it.

  405. Lorraine Quig,

  406. who was an FBI

  407. counterintelligence operative,

  408. an undercover agent for 25 years,

  409. knows something about deception.

  410. And she writes in her book

  411. that the most difficult kind of deception

  412. to uncover

  413. is actually self-deception.

  414. She says,

  415. we've carefully,

  416. she says here,

  417. we tell ourselves

  418. we want to know the truth,

  419. but we're very selective

  420. about the kind of truth we seek.

  421. About others?

  422. Yes.

  423. And usually about world events

  424. and situations that impact us directly.

  425. But we are less receptive

  426. to revelations about ourselves.

  427. We've carefully packaged ourselves

  428. to look and act

  429. in a manner that ensures success

  430. in the world.

  431. Our ego has dressed us up

  432. for so long

  433. that many of us

  434. don't even know

  435. how to begin

  436. to peel back

  437. the layers of illusion,

  438. to expose cold,

  439. hard facts

  440. about ourselves.

  441. That's why we need help.

  442. So take time this week

  443. to ask a trusted Christian brother

  444. or sister

  445. to help you identify

  446. any logs

  447. in your life

  448. that you're

  449. oblivious to

  450. but it's obvious

  451. to others.

  452. The existence of logs

  453. in our eyes

  454. necessitates

  455. mutual admonishment

  456. among church members.

  457. But before admonishing

  458. one another,

  459. we should examine

  460. ourselves.

  461. That's the call.

  462. And having spoken

  463. of the blind,

  464. leading the blind,

  465. and a man whose sight

  466. is obscured by a log

  467. trying to help another man

  468. with a speck in his eye,

  469. Jesus explains

  470. the need for self-examination

  471. further in verses 43 to 45.

  472. This is where he talks

  473. about the fruit

  474. of Christ.

  475. We know that this passage

  476. is a further explanation

  477. of the preceding verses

  478. because it begins

  479. with the word for.

  480. He says,

  481. For,

  482. no good tree

  483. bears bad fruit,

  484. nor again does a bad tree

  485. bear good fruit.

  486. For each tree

  487. is known by its own fruit.

  488. For figs are not gathered

  489. from thorn bushes,

  490. nor are grapes

  491. picked from a bramble bush.

  492. The good person

  493. out of the good treasure

  494. of his heart

  495. produces good.

  496. And the evil person

  497. out of his evil treasure

  498. produces evil.

  499. For out of the abundance

  500. of the heart

  501. his mouth speaks.

  502. Once again,

  503. the theme

  504. is self-examination.

  505. This time,

  506. Jesus begins

  507. with the very simple

  508. observation

  509. that a good tree

  510. cannot bear bad fruit,

  511. and that a bad tree

  512. cannot bear good fruit.

  513. This is an impossibility.

  514. A good tree

  515. cannot bear bad fruit.

  516. Likewise,

  517. thorn bushes

  518. don't produce figs,

  519. nor do bramble bushes

  520. produce grapes.

  521. Figs are a delicious,

  522. nutritious fruit

  523. that grow in the Middle East,

  524. and of course,

  525. you wouldn't expect

  526. to find that

  527. among the thorn bushes.

  528. And the bramble bush,

  529. likewise,

  530. has prickles and thorns,

  531. and its leaves

  532. are serrated.

  533. You can get cut

  534. by the leaves as well.

  535. So it might make

  536. a good alternative

  537. for a barbed wire,

  538. but you're not going

  539. to find any grapes

  540. growing on them,

  541. and this is

  542. the obvious observation.

  543. But from this,

  544. Jesus makes

  545. the insightful

  546. spiritual observation

  547. that the good person

  548. out of the good treasure

  549. of his heart

  550. produces good,

  551. and the evil person

  552. out of his evil treasure

  553. produces evil,

  554. for out of the abundance

  555. of the heart

  556. his mouth speaks.

  557. There are several things

  558. that are very interesting

  559. about this,

  560. about verse 45.

  561. First,

  562. Jesus doesn't use

  563. the same absolute

  564. formulation

  565. that he used

  566. in his illustrations.

  567. Notice that Jesus

  568. doesn't say

  569. the good person

  570. does not

  571. or cannot

  572. produce evil.

  573. He does not say

  574. the evil person

  575. does not

  576. or cannot

  577. produce good.

  578. Instead,

  579. Jesus rewards it

  580. in a general

  581. positive formulation.

  582. He says,

  583. the good person

  584. out of the good

  585. treasure of his heart

  586. produces good,

  587. and the evil person

  588. out of his evil treasure

  589. produces evil.

  590. This is a general truth.

  591. It's not that

  592. this is what

  593. is generally true

  594. of good people

  595. and good evil people,

  596. that you can tell

  597. by their fruit

  598. what they do

  599. in their lives.

  600. We saw earlier

  601. that Jesus called

  602. his disciples

  603. to do good

  604. even to their enemies.

  605. So the same idea

  606. here of doing good

  607. refers to doing

  608. something that's

  609. morally good,

  610. something good works,

  611. what we might call

  612. good works.

  613. And so he makes

  614. the point,

  615. it's not that a good

  616. person can never

  617. do any wrong,

  618. but that there's

  619. a consistency there

  620. and a pattern there

  621. that a good person

  622. does good things.

  623. Because what the person

  624. does flows out

  625. from the treasure

  626. of his heart.

  627. This is an extremely

  628. important principle

  629. because our actions

  630. and speech

  631. are not caused

  632. by our circumstances

  633. or our environment,

  634. but by our hearts.

  635. it's our sinful

  636. human tendency

  637. to blame others.

  638. And so we say,

  639. well, if my roommates

  640. weren't so lazy

  641. and incompetent,

  642. then I wouldn't be

  643. so frustrated and angry.

  644. It's tempting

  645. to think that way,

  646. but the sinful anger

  647. comes from

  648. your own heart.

  649. If only I made

  650. more money,

  651. then I wouldn't be

  652. so greedy

  653. and stingy.

  654. It's tempting

  655. to think that way,

  656. but greed

  657. comes from

  658. your own heart.

  659. The circumstances

  660. provide the context

  661. for your behavior,

  662. but they are not

  663. the cost.

  664. After a concrete floor

  665. is laid

  666. in a building,

  667. on a building,

  668. sometimes engineers

  669. do a load test

  670. to investigate

  671. its structural integrity.

  672. If there's not

  673. enough compressive

  674. strength in the concrete,

  675. it will crack

  676. under the weight.

  677. And when concrete

  678. fails in this way,

  679. the cause of the failure

  680. is not the weight,

  681. but the concrete's

  682. lack of structural integrity.

  683. It was already

  684. defective,

  685. and the weight

  686. merely exposed

  687. that defect.

  688. And that's the same

  689. thing here.

  690. This calls for

  691. honest self-evaluation.

  692. We should look

  693. around ourselves,

  694. look at the fruit

  695. of our lives,

  696. in our families,

  697. in our church,

  698. in our workplaces.

  699. Am I bearing

  700. good fruit

  701. or bad fruit?

  702. Because the fruit

  703. we produce

  704. outwardly reflects

  705. what's inside

  706. our hearts.

  707. While this is true

  708. generally of all

  709. behaviors,

  710. Jesus has a

  711. particular emphasis,

  712. focus in this passage

  713. on our speech.

  714. He concludes

  715. verse 45.

  716. This is the second

  717. surprising thing

  718. about this verse.

  719. For out of the

  720. abundance of the

  721. heart,

  722. his mouth speaks.

  723. The heart is

  724. the fountain

  725. of the mouth.

  726. What comes out

  727. of the mouth

  728. comes up

  729. from the heart.

  730. This focus

  731. on speech

  732. connects this passage

  733. back to verses

  734. 39 to 42,

  735. where Jesus

  736. mentioned a teacher

  737. who misleads

  738. his disciple

  739. and a man

  740. who brings

  741. misguided correction

  742. to his brother.

  743. There's a particular

  744. warning here

  745. to those who

  746. aspire to teach

  747. others,

  748. those who speak

  749. a lot.

  750. For out of the

  751. abundance,

  752. the overflow

  753. of the heart,

  754. your mouth speaks.

  755. So we are to

  756. guard our hearts,

  757. guard your inner

  758. life,

  759. guard what you

  760. love and cherish

  761. in your heart,

  762. and make sure

  763. that you examine

  764. the fruit of any

  765. teacher you acquire

  766. for yourself.

  767. who then

  768. is the teacher

  769. that we should

  770. follow?

  771. That's the main

  772. point that Jesus

  773. has been getting

  774. at all this time,

  775. and he makes it

  776. explicit in verses

  777. 46 to 49,

  778. when he talks

  779. about the foundation

  780. of Christ.

  781. He says in verses

  782. 46 to 47,

  783. why do you call

  784. me Lord,

  785. Lord,

  786. and not do

  787. what I tell you?

  788. Everyone who

  789. comes to me

  790. and hears my

  791. words and does

  792. them,

  793. I will show

  794. you what he

  795. is like.

  796. What's the point

  797. of calling Jesus

  798. Lord,

  799. or Master,

  800. Teacher,

  801. or God,

  802. if you don't

  803. do what he

  804. tells you?

  805. The repetition

  806. of the word

  807. Lord is emphatic,

  808. and it kind of

  809. almost suggests

  810. this kind of

  811. insincere

  812. servility.

  813. It's someone

  814. who is fawning

  815. over Jesus.

  816. Oh, Lord,

  817. Lord,

  818. teach us.

  819. Lord,

  820. Lord,

  821. lead us.

  822. Lord,

  823. Lord,

  824. speak to us.

  825. But it's all

  826. a show.

  827. It's a hypocrisy.

  828. Because they

  829. don't do

  830. what he

  831. says.

  832. Earlier in

  833. chapter,

  834. earlier in

  835. this chapter,

  836. Luke 6,

    Luke 6:18

  837. verse 18,

  838. before Jesus

  839. began the

  840. sermon,

  841. we are told

  842. that a great

  843. multitude of

  844. people came

  845. to hear him.

  846. The word

  847. come and

  848. word hear,

  849. these two

  850. words are

  851. repeated in

  852. verse 47,

  853. as Jesus

  854. brings this

  855. sermon to a

  856. close.

  857. But he adds

  858. a third word,

  859. a new word.

  860. He says,

  861. everyone who

  862. comes to

  863. me and

  864. hears my

  865. words and

  866. does them,

  867. I will show

  868. you what he

  869. is like.

  870. It's,

  871. yes,

  872. they've come

  873. to hear him,

  874. but coming

  875. is not

  876. enough.

  877. Hearing is

  878. not enough.

  879. You must

  880. do what

  881. Jesus has

  882. taught you

  883. to do.

  884. As

  885. Christians,

  886. we love to

  887. pray for

  888. discernment and

  889. guidance in

  890. our lives,

  891. don't we?

  892. I'm the same

  893. way.

  894. And it's good

  895. and right

  896. that we

  897. desire to

  898. figure out

  899. what God's

  900. will is for

  901. us so we

  902. can follow

  903. him.

  904. But for

  905. every decision

  906. where his

  907. will is not

  908. perfectly clear

  909. and we need

  910. to exercise

  911. discernment and

  912. wisdom and

  913. prayer,

  914. for every one

  915. of those,

  916. there are

  917. hundreds of

  918. decisions where

  919. God's will

  920. is perfectly

  921. clear and

  922. revealed to

  923. us in

  924. his word,

  925. the

  926. scriptures.

  927. believers.

  928. You might

  929. not know what

  930. your long-term

  931. career is

  932. supposed to

  933. be,

  934. but you do

  935. know this

  936. from Colossians

  937. 3.23,

  938. that whatever

  939. you do,

  940. work heartily

  941. as for the

  942. Lord and

  943. not for

  944. men.

  945. You might

  946. not know

  947. exactly who

  948. you're supposed

  949. to marry,

  950. but you do

  951. know this.

  952. 2 Corinthians

  953. 6.14 says,

  954. do not be

  955. unequally yoked

  956. with unbelievers.

  957. 1 Thessalonians

  958. 4.3 says,

  959. abstain from

  960. sexual immorality.

  961. You know

  962. these things

  963. which refers

  964. to any

  965. sexual immorality

  966. outside of

  967. marriage.

  968. You want

  969. to know

  970. more of

  971. God's will

  972. in your

  973. life.

  974. Are you

  975. obeying

  976. what you

  977. already know

  978. about God's

  979. will in

  980. your life?

  981. We always

  982. want God

  983. to speak to

  984. us,

  985. but if God

  986. were to

  987. speak right

  988. now in

  989. an audible

  990. way,

  991. would you

  992. obey Him?

  993. Because God

  994. has spoken

  995. to us.

  996. through Jesus

  997. Christ.

  998. And God's

  999. word has

  1000. been recorded

  1001. and preserved

  1002. for us

  1003. in this

  1004. book.

  1005. Maybe

  1006. there's a

  1007. lack of

  1008. clarity

  1009. in our

  1010. lives

  1011. regarding

  1012. God's

  1013. will

  1014. because

  1015. there's

  1016. a lack

  1017. of

  1018. obedience

  1019. in our

  1020. lives

  1021. regarding

  1022. what God

  1023. has already

  1024. revealed.

  1025. God's

  1026. need for

  1027. obedience

  1028. is the

  1029. point of

  1030. the

  1031. illustration

  1032. that Jesus

  1033. uses in

  1034. verses 48

  1035. to 49.

  1036. He is like

  1037. a man

  1038. building a

  1039. house

  1040. who dug

  1041. deep and

  1042. laid the

  1043. foundation

  1044. on the

  1045. rock

  1046. and when

  1047. a flood

  1048. arose,

  1049. the stream

  1050. broke

  1051. against the

  1052. house

  1053. and could

  1054. not shake

  1055. it

  1056. because it

  1057. had been

  1058. well built.

  1059. But the

  1060. one who

  1061. hears

  1062. and does

  1063. not do

  1064. them is

  1065. like a

  1066. man who

  1067. built a

  1068. house on

  1069. the ground

  1070. without a

  1071. foundation.

  1072. When the

  1073. stream broke

  1074. against it,

  1075. immediately it

  1076. fell and

  1077. the ruin of

  1078. that house

  1079. was great.

  1080. The person

  1081. who obeys

  1082. Jesus'

  1083. teaching is

  1084. building a

  1085. house on

  1086. the rock,

  1087. on a

  1088. foundation,

  1089. which will

  1090. withstand the

  1091. floods that

  1092. rise up

  1093. against it.

  1094. But the

  1095. person who

  1096. disobeys

  1097. Jesus'

  1098. teaching is

  1099. building a

  1100. house without

  1101. a foundation,

  1102. just on

  1103. the dirt,

  1104. which will

  1105. collapse

  1106. immediately

  1107. into great

  1108. ruin when

  1109. the judgment

  1110. of God's

  1111. flood comes.

  1112. This image

  1113. is an

  1114. allusion to

  1115. Ezekiel

  1116. 13,

  1117. 9-14,

  1118. where God

  1119. denounces the

  1120. false prophets

  1121. of Israel.

  1122. He says this

  1123. to the false

  1124. prophets,

  1125. My hand

  1126. will be

  1127. against the

  1128. prophets who

  1129. see false

  1130. visions and

  1131. who give

  1132. lying divinations.

  1133. They shall

  1134. not be in

  1135. the council

  1136. of my

  1137. people,

  1138. nor be

  1139. enrolled in

  1140. the register

  1141. of the

  1142. house of

  1143. Israel,

  1144. nor shall

  1145. they enter

  1146. the land

  1147. of Israel,

  1148. and you

  1149. shall know

  1150. that I

  1151. am the

  1152. Lord God,

  1153. precisely

  1154. because they

  1155. have misled

  1156. my people,

  1157. saying,

  1158. Peace,

  1159. when there

  1160. is no

  1161. peace,

  1162. and because

  1163. when the

  1164. people build

  1165. a wall,

  1166. these prophets

  1167. smear it

  1168. with whitewash,

  1169. say to those

  1170. who smear it

  1171. with whitewash,

  1172. that it shall

  1173. fall.

  1174. There will

  1175. be a

  1176. deluge of

  1177. rain,

  1178. and you,

  1179. O great

  1180. hailstones,

  1181. will fall,

  1182. and a stormy

  1183. wind break out,

  1184. and when the

  1185. wall falls,

  1186. will it not

  1187. be said to

  1188. you,

  1189. where is the

  1190. coating with

  1191. which you

  1192. smeared it?

  1193. Therefore,

  1194. thus says the

  1195. Lord God,

  1196. I will make

  1197. a stormy

  1198. wind break

  1199. out in my

  1200. wrath,

  1201. and there

  1202. shall be a

  1203. deluge of

  1204. rain in my

  1205. anger,

  1206. and great

  1207. hailstones in

  1208. wrath to make

  1209. a full end,

  1210. and I will

  1211. break down the

  1212. wall that you

  1213. have smeared

  1214. with whitewash,

  1215. and bring it

  1216. down to the

  1217. ground,

  1218. so that its

  1219. foundation will

  1220. be laid bare.

  1221. God's judgment

  1222. was at hand

  1223. against sinful

  1224. Israel,

  1225. but the false

  1226. prophets of

  1227. Israel were

  1228. giving them

  1229. false assurances,

  1230. proclaiming peace

  1231. when there is no

  1232. peace in sight,

  1233. and by doing

  1234. that,

  1235. they were

  1236. basically smearing

  1237. whitewash on a

  1238. wall that was

  1239. about to crumble.

  1240. Instead of fixing

  1241. the cracks on the

  1242. wall,

  1243. they masked it

  1244. with whitewash,

  1245. and pretended like

  1246. everything was

  1247. okay,

  1248. and God

  1249. promised to

  1250. send a flood

  1251. of rain that

  1252. will tear down

  1253. the wall and

  1254. expose their

  1255. hypocrisy.

  1256. Jesus making a

  1257. similar point.

  1258. If we hear

  1259. Jesus,

  1260. but don't obey

  1261. him,

  1262. we are whitewashing

  1263. our walls that

  1264. are crumbling

  1265. down.

  1266. We're building a

  1267. house without a

  1268. foundation.

  1269. We're pretending

  1270. that obedience

  1271. doesn't matter.

  1272. We're pretending

  1273. that our sins

  1274. are not serious,

  1275. and Jesus warns

  1276. us,

  1277. if you do that,

  1278. the house of your

  1279. life will fall

  1280. into great ruin

  1281. on that day

  1282. of judgment.

  1283. Our sins

  1284. are grave,

  1285. and they have

  1286. eternal consequences.

  1287. You must repent

  1288. and turn to Jesus

  1289. for salvation.

  1290. You must turn

  1291. to him in faith,

  1292. cling to him,

  1293. and follow him

  1294. in obedience.

  1295. This is an

  1296. urgent and

  1297. desperate

  1298. situation.

  1299. exactly a month

  1300. ago,

  1301. a mining

  1302. dam

  1303. in

  1304. Burmadino,

  1305. Brazil,

  1306. collapsed due

  1307. to structural

  1308. failure.

  1309. And the New York

  1310. Times posted a

  1311. frightening video

  1312. of the incident.

  1313. I don't know if

  1314. you guys have

  1315. seen it.

  1316. It's like a

  1317. tidal wave

  1318. of mud.

  1319. The collapse

  1320. released 11.7

  1321. million cubic

  1322. meters of

  1323. toxic mud

  1324. and buried

  1325. more than

  1326. 150 people

  1327. alive.

  1328. And this

  1329. sent a

  1330. chilling fear

  1331. throughout Brazil's

  1332. mining heartland

  1333. because there

  1334. are 87 other

  1335. dams like this

  1336. one,

  1337. which is held

  1338. up by little

  1339. more than

  1340. sand and

  1341. silt.

  1342. 83 of those

  1343. 87 dams have

  1344. been rated by the

  1345. Brazilian government

  1346. as equally

  1347. vulnerable or

  1348. worse.

  1349. This

  1350. highlights the

  1351. mortal danger

  1352. of building a

  1353. house on dirt

  1354. without a

  1355. foundation.

  1356. And it's a

  1357. good illustration

  1358. of the

  1359. eternal danger

  1360. of refusing to

  1361. follow Christ.

  1362. The situation

  1363. for sinners

  1364. is far

  1365. more

  1366. precarious

  1367. than

  1368. that of

  1369. the

  1370. Brazilian

  1371. residents

  1372. living

  1373. right near

  1374. those

  1375. dams.

  1376. Let me

  1377. ask you,

  1378. are you a

  1379. good person?

  1380. Jesus said

  1381. earlier in

  1382. verse 45,

  1383. the good

  1384. person out of

  1385. the good

  1386. treasure of

  1387. his heart

  1388. produces

  1389. good.

  1390. Are you a

  1391. good person?

  1392. That's a

  1393. trick question.

  1394. Christian

  1395. ethicist

  1396. Louis Smedes

  1397. wrote a

  1398. brilliantly

  1399. titled book

  1400. called

  1401. A Pretty

  1402. Good

  1403. Person,

  1404. pointing out

  1405. the fact

  1406. that most

  1407. people in

  1408. this world

  1409. see themselves

  1410. as a

  1411. pretty good

  1412. person.

  1413. But this

  1414. is the

  1415. most dangerous

  1416. delusion

  1417. that the

  1418. devil has

  1419. ever duped

  1420. humanity

  1421. with.

  1422. Because

  1423. later in

  1424. Luke 18,

  1425. 18-19,

  1426. a self-righteous

  1427. ruler asks

  1428. Jesus,

  1429. good teacher,

  1430. what must

  1431. I do to

  1432. inherit eternal

  1433. life?

  1434. And Jesus

  1435. replies,

  1436. why do you

  1437. call me

  1438. good?

  1439. No one

  1440. is good

  1441. except God

  1442. alone.

  1443. Jesus is not

  1444. denying that

  1445. he is good.

  1446. He is good

  1447. because he

  1448. is the

  1449. Son of God,

  1450. the second

  1451. person of

  1452. the Trinity.

  1453. But Jesus

  1454. is challenging

  1455. the rich

  1456. young rulers

  1457. shallow

  1458. understanding

  1459. of moral

  1460. goodness.

  1461. As we

  1462. see later

  1463. in that

  1464. passage,

  1465. when the

  1466. ruler

  1467. claims to

  1468. have,

  1469. he claims

  1470. to have

  1471. kept all

  1472. the Ten

  1473. Commandments,

  1474. he thought

  1475. he was a

  1476. pretty good

  1477. person.

  1478. And he

  1479. thought that

  1480. he was

  1481. being

  1482. deferential

  1483. toward

  1484. Jesus

  1485. by calling

  1486. him good.

  1487. Hey,

  1488. I'm pretty

  1489. good.

  1490. Hey,

  1491. good teacher,

  1492. let's have

  1493. a conversation.

  1494. But Jesus

  1495. exposes the

  1496. man's deficient

  1497. understanding

  1498. of goodness.

  1499. You think

  1500. you're good?

  1501. there is

  1502. no human

  1503. being that

  1504. can rightly

  1505. claim to

  1506. be good.

  1507. No one is

  1508. good except

  1509. God alone

  1510. because every

  1511. single human

  1512. being has

  1513. rebelled

  1514. against God,

  1515. has sinned

  1516. against him,

  1517. and deserves

  1518. eternal punishment.

  1519. We're not

  1520. good people.

  1521. but the

  1522. good God

  1523. sent us

  1524. a good

  1525. teacher

  1526. to instruct

  1527. us in the

  1528. way of

  1529. salvation.

  1530. So are

  1531. you following

  1532. Jesus Christ?

  1533. Following

  1534. Jesus Christ

  1535. means we

  1536. follow him

  1537. to the

  1538. cross

  1539. where Jesus

  1540. out of his

  1541. love for us

  1542. in order to

  1543. save us

  1544. out of his

  1545. love and

  1546. obedience to

  1547. the Father,

  1548. he dies

  1549. to pay

  1550. the penalty

  1551. of our

  1552. sins.

  1553. Jesus was

  1554. good,

  1555. he was

  1556. perfectly

  1557. righteous,

  1558. yet he

  1559. met the

  1560. ruin and

  1561. calamity of

  1562. the cross

  1563. that should

  1564. have fallen

  1565. on us,

  1566. that we

  1567. deserved,

  1568. so that we

  1569. might be

  1570. spared from

  1571. the wrath

  1572. of God.

  1573. That's the

  1574. good news

  1575. of Jesus

  1576. Christ.

  1577. Do you

  1578. believe it?

  1579. have you

  1580. renounced

  1581. your sins

  1582. and have

  1583. you pledged

  1584. allegiance to

  1585. Christ the

  1586. King?

  1587. That's the

  1588. most important

  1589. question.

  1590. We should

  1591. follow Christ

  1592. who is a

  1593. good teacher

  1594. that saves

  1595. us from

  1596. our sins.

  1597. Take a

  1598. moment to

  1599. reflect on

  1600. that.

  1601. You can

  1602. close your

  1603. eyes if

  1604. you

  1605. prefer.

  1606. How is

  1607. the Lord

  1608. Jesus

  1609. calling you

  1610. to follow

  1611. him today?

  1612. Amen.
