  1. All right, today we're studying Luke chapter 8, verse 4 through 21.

    Luke 8:4–21

  2. Please turn with me there while I open us up in prayer.

  3. Father, I pray that you would be with us,

  4. that you would prepare our hearts to receive your word,

  5. that your word would bear much good fruit.

  6. Father, I pray that it would be for your praise and for our good,

  7. and I pray that you would help me to speak faithfully from your word.

  8. And we pray in Christ's name, amen.

  9. So Luke chapter 8, verses 4 through 21.

    Luke 8:4–21

  10. And when a great crowd was gathering,

  11. and people from town after town came to him,

  12. he said in a parable,

  13. A sower went out to sow his seed,

  14. and as he sowed, some fell along the path,

  15. and was trampled underfoot.

  16. And the birds of the air devoured it,

  17. and some fell on the rock,

  18. and as it grew up, it withered away,

  19. because it had no moisture.

  20. And some fell among thorns,

  21. and the thorns grew up with it and choked it.

  22. And some fell into good soil,

  23. and grew, and yielded a hundredfold.

  24. As he said these things,

  25. he called out,

  26. He who has ears to hear,

  27. let him hear.

  28. And when his disciples asked him what this parable meant,

  29. he said,

  30. To you it has been given to know the secrets of the kingdom of God,

  31. but for others they are in parables,

  32. so that seeing they may not see,

  33. and hearing they may not understand.

  34. Now the parable is this,

  35. The seed is the word of God.

  36. The ones along the path are those who have heard,

  37. and the devil comes and takes away the word from their hearts,

  38. so that they may not believe and be saved.

  39. And the ones on the rock are those who,

  40. when they hear the word,

  41. receive it with joy.

  42. But these have no root.

  43. They believe for a while,

  44. and in time of testing fall away.

  45. And as for what fell among the thorns,

  46. they are those who hear,

  47. but as they go on their way,

  48. they are choked by the cares and riches and pleasures of life,

  49. and their fruit does not mature.

  50. As for that in the good soil,

  51. they are those who,

  52. hearing the word,

  53. hold it fast in an honest and good heart,

  54. and bear fruit with patience.

  55. No one after lighting a lamp covers it with a jar,

  56. or puts it under a bed,

  57. but puts it on a stand,

  58. so that those who enter may see the light.

  59. For nothing is hidden that will not be made manifest,

  60. nor is anything secret that will not be made known,

  61. that will not be known,

  62. and come to light.

  63. Take care then how you hear,

  64. for to the one who has,

  65. more will be given,

  66. and from the one who has not,

  67. even what he thinks that he has will be taken away.

  68. Then his mother and his brothers came to him,

  69. but they could not reach him because of the crowd.

  70. And he was told,

  71. Your mother and your brothers are standing outside,

  72. desiring to see you.

  73. But he answered them,

  74. My mother and my brothers are those who hear the word of God,

  75. and do it.

  76. Like many of you,

  77. Carolyn and I divide our chores at home.

  78. Some of them could go either way.

  79. I take out the trash,

  80. but Carolyn is perfectly fine at taking out the trash.

  81. She just doesn't like doing that,

  82. because it smells right.

  83. But laundry is something that Carolyn should do,

  84. because unfortunately,

  85. I have a history of shrinking our clothes.

  86. I don't want to.

  87. I don't try to.

  88. I really try not to.

  89. But some,

  90. I just miss the clothes, right?

  91. So like, for example,

  92. this sweater, right?

  93. I thought I'd wear it today.

  94. It's a little tight.

  95. I'm not trying to show off my dad bod,

  96. but it's,

  97. sleeves are kind of short,

  98. and it's one of my shrunken sweaters.

  99. So I'm just going to roll up my sleeves

  100. so I look hardworking instead of incompetent.

  101. But ultimately,

  102. it comes down to,

  103. I think,

  104. a failure to heed instructions for me, right?

  105. I want to be quick and efficient

  106. about getting stuff done,

  107. but I could just take an extra 30 seconds,

  108. read the instructions on the little tab,

  109. right,

  110. on my sweater,

  111. or just remember,

  112. Carolyn told me to check out the clothes

  113. before I wash it,

  114. and I could have avoided it, right?

  115. And that's what our passage is about this morning.

  116. We're studying Luke chapter 8,

    Luke 8:4–21

  117. verses 4 through 21,

  118. and the main theme of this passage is

  119. take care how you hear God's word.

  120. Take care how you hear God's word.

  121. Our passage is split up into three parts,

  122. consisting of the parable of the sower,

  123. in verses 4 through 15,

  124. proverbs around light,

  125. in verses 16 through 18,

  126. and the encounter with Jesus and his family,

  127. in verses 19 through 21.

  128. So let's dive into the first part.

  129. The section on the parable of the sower

  130. takes up most of our passage,

  131. and I'll be spending most of our time here.

  132. It includes the parable itself,

  133. a brief point about the purpose of parables,

  134. and an explanation of the parable.

  135. In verse 4,

  136. where we see that Jesus' ministry

  137. continues to attract a lot of attention,

  138. people from town after town, it says,

  139. have come to form a great crowd.

  140. So far, he's healed people of physical illnesses,

  141. such as leprosy and paralysis.

  142. He's freed them from demonic oppression.

  143. He's forgiven their sins,

  144. even raised the man from the dead.

  145. And people eerily want what Jesus is offering,

  146. but the situation isn't as positive as it may seem.

  147. For one, we know, we've learned that,

  148. along with the increase in popularity,

  149. there's been an increase in animosity and opposition.

  150. Right?

  151. The Jewish leaders, they oppose him.

  152. They don't like him.

  153. They don't like what he's saying and what he's doing.

  154. And also, just because people are,

  155. they want what Jesus is giving them,

  156. it doesn't mean that they're receiving Jesus himself.

  157. It doesn't mean that they want him himself.

  158. It's possible to love the gift more than the giver,

  159. and there are probably a lot of people in the crowd here

  160. who are only interested in Jesus at this superficial level.

  161. But Jesus continues his mission.

  162. We read in chapter 4,

  163. Jesus came to proclaim good news to the poor,

  164. to proclaim liberty to the captives,

  165. and proclaim the year of the Lord's favor.

  166. So he continues to teach,

  167. and he teaches them in the form of parables here.

  168. What is a parable?

  169. In the Bible, they are illustrative comparisons

  170. meant to teach something.

  171. Jesus taught with some 60 different parables

  172. using illustrations from everyday life,

  173. like family, housekeeping, farming, like here.

  174. And his listeners,

  175. they don't need special knowledge or vocabulary

  176. to understand the illustrations in the parables.

  177. But the difficulty of parables

  178. is understanding the meaning underneath it all.

  179. So here's Jesus' parable.

  180. A sower goes out to sow his seed.

  181. He's just scattering the seed liberally,

  182. almost wastefully.

  183. He scatters seed.

  184. Some fall on unproductive ground,

  185. and others fall on productive ground.

  186. The unproductive parts have different issues.

  187. First, there's a soil along the path.

  188. So apparently in this field,

  189. there were paths for walking,

  190. walking through the field.

  191. And these seeds got stepped on,

  192. where they were easy pickings for birds,

  193. because the ground was hard-packed,

  194. and it couldn't go into the ground.

  195. Second, there was the soil on the rock.

  196. And when it says this,

  197. this isn't like earth with small rocks in there,

  198. but it's a thin layer of soil

  199. that sits on top of a base of limestone,

  200. which is apparently common

  201. in the Palestinian hill country.

  202. And these seeds,

  203. they were able to start growing,

  204. start germinating,

  205. but there wasn't enough soil to hold water

  206. for the seeds to grow.

  207. So they sprouted up quickly,

  208. but then they withered away.

  209. Then there's the soil with the thorns.

  210. There's nothing wrong with the soil itself.

  211. It's not hard-packed like the path

  212. or thin like on the rock.

  213. Instead, its growing potential

  214. is being used up by other plants,

  215. by thorns.

  216. Then there's only one type of productive ground.

  217. It's good soil,

  218. and it produces a huge yield,

  219. a hundredfold.

  220. Again, the illustration is pretty easy to understand

  221. what's happening on the surface.

  222. And then after the parable in verse 8,

  223. Jesus tells the crowd,

  224. he who has ears to hear,

  225. let him hear.

  226. It's an easy command for the crowds to overlook.

  227. It's a pretty short and simple phrase

  228. that Jesus says here,

  229. but everything in this chapter,

  230. in this passage,

  231. hinges on this one point

  232. because they need to take care

  233. how they listen to what Jesus is saying.

  234. Will they think about what he said,

  235. and will they consider its meaning

  236. and act upon it?

  237. Or will they ignore it,

  238. forget it,

  239. or will they give up

  240. in the middle of trying to apply it?

  241. And so the same is true of us

  242. regarding God's word.

  243. What good does it do to us

  244. if we hear the best preaching

  245. and the best teaching,

  246. but we don't think about it,

  247. we don't ponder its practical applications,

  248. we don't try to follow it in our lives,

  249. right?

  250. In verse nine,

  251. we see that there's a change in audience.

  252. They go from a huge crowd

  253. to speaking,

  254. Jesus speaking to just his disciples.

  255. His disciples come up to him.

  256. They know that Jesus isn't,

  257. he's obviously not giving a farming lesson,

  258. so they say,

  259. what does this parable mean?

  260. And before explaining the parables' meaning,

  261. Jesus briefly speaks

  262. to the purpose of parables.

  263. Maybe this is a question

  264. that's come across your mind.

  265. Why does Jesus speak in parables?

  266. They're hard to understand.

  267. If he's come to proclaim good news

  268. and free the captives,

  269. why does he speak in illustrations

  270. that aren't obvious,

  271. that some people won't understand, right?

  272. In verse 10,

  273. Jesus tells his disciples

  274. that parables serve a dual purpose.

  275. They reveal the secrets of God's kingdom

  276. to Jesus' disciples,

  277. and they also hide the meaning to others

  278. so that these people,

  279. they see,

  280. but they don't see.

  281. They hear,

  282. but they don't understand.

  283. So,

  284. if you guys remember,

  285. as I mentioned,

  286. Jesus is attracting big crowds,

  287. but in these crowds

  288. are people who have already heard

  289. Jesus' teaching,

  290. and they've rejected it,

  291. right?

  292. Although they've seen Jesus' heal sicknesses,

  293. raise a man from the dead even,

  294. they're still unreceptive to him

  295. and his teaching.

  296. So in this context,

  297. parables are given.

  298. Parables are a form of judgment.

  299. Those who are genuinely following Jesus

  300. and try to understand,

  301. to them are given the secrets of God's kingdom.

  302. But to those who have already received teaching

  303. but rejected it,

  304. to them further understanding is withheld.

  305. So it's like parables are,

  306. like they're a one-way mirror, right?

  307. From one side,

  308. if you try to look through,

  309. it's just a mirror,

  310. but on the other side,

  311. you get to look through

  312. and see what's on the other side.

  313. And this mirror is on a swivel, right?

  314. And what determines how the mirror is turned

  315. is the choice of a person's heart.

  316. Do you want to understand,

  317. and do you want to receive Jesus or not?

  318. Now, to be clear,

  319. it's not as if God is cheering for people

  320. to reject Jesus,

  321. and that's far from it.

  322. God wants everyone to be saved.

  323. So we read in 1 Timothy 2,

  324. God our Savior desires all people to be saved

  325. and to come to the knowledge of the truth.

  326. And in Ezekiel 33,

  327. we read,

  328. So God loves us.

  329. He wants what is good for us,

  330. and he's cheering for us to live and not die.

  331. And God is just.

  332. He's the one who judges us

  333. according to what is right and good.

  334. And maybe the idea of God

  335. using parables as judgment

  336. makes you squirm in your seat a little bit.

  337. I know it makes me a little uncomfortable.

  338. But at a deeper level,

  339. I also know that

  340. I want God to be just.

  341. I need him to be just.

  342. A God who sees wrong and evil

  343. yet is unwilling or unable

  344. to do anything about it,

  345. that's no God at all.

  346. We need God to see the injustices

  347. of this world and to judge.

  348. We need God to see

  349. the mosque shooting in New Zealand this week

  350. and to hold people accountable for that.

  351. Right?

  352. So what does this all mean for us?

  353. Well, we need to take care how we listen.

  354. How are you coming to God's word this morning?

  355. What is your attitude?

  356. Is your heart soft and receptive to God's word?

  357. Do you seek to understand and obey it?

  358. Then be joyful

  359. because God is revealing

  360. the secrets of his kingdom to you.

  361. Right?

  362. Keep seeking understanding.

  363. Keep asking questions.

  364. Be diligent in applying what you've learned.

  365. Or do you reject what God says?

  366. It holds no weight with you.

  367. You're your own boss,

  368. your own God.

  369. Only you gets the final say in your life.

  370. Then don't expect any more fodder

  371. for your rejection

  372. and your contempt

  373. and your indifference.

  374. But I do hope for better things

  375. for us here today.

  376. In verse 11,

  377. Jesus explains this parable

  378. to his disciples.

  379. So let's listen carefully

  380. to its meaning.

  381. The seed is the word of God

  382. and the soil,

  383. the first soil,

  384. the soil on the path

  385. represents those who hear the word,

  386. but the devil comes

  387. and takes it from their hearts

  388. so they can't believe

  389. and be saved.

  390. The second soil on the rock

  391. represents those

  392. who do receive God's word

  393. and initially receive it with joy,

  394. but in times of testing,

  395. they fall away.

  396. The third soil with the thorns

  397. represents those

  398. who hear God's word,

  399. but God's word can't produce

  400. mature fruit in their lives

  401. because they're choked

  402. by the cares and riches

  403. and pleasures of life.

  404. And the fourth soil,

  405. the good soil,

  406. represents those

  407. who hear the word

  408. and they hold it fast

  409. in an honest and good heart

  410. and bear fruit with patience.

  411. I'm pointing out

  412. a few additional things

  413. from this parable.

  414. First, there's nothing different

  415. with what the soils receive,

  416. right?

  417. They all get the same seed.

  418. It's not like the first soil

  419. gets like old

  420. and rotten fruit or seeds

  421. and the fourth gets fresh

  422. and strong young seeds,

  423. right?

  424. They're all the same.

  425. Deficiency is not in God's word,

  426. but with the response

  427. of the hearer.

  428. Second, the good soil

  429. is commended for bearing fruit.

  430. What is fruit?

  431. Fruit is a person's response

  432. to God's word

  433. that is consistent

  434. with God's word, right?

  435. Responding consistently

  436. with God's word.

  437. So for example,

  438. when God says

  439. in Philippians chapter 4,

    Philippians 4 chapter mention

  440. do not be anxious

  441. about anything,

  442. but in everything

  443. by prayer and supplication

  444. with thanksgiving,

  445. let your requests

  446. be made known to God.

  447. Then when we feel anxious,

  448. we pray to God

  449. about that anxiety,

  450. about the source

  451. of that anxiety.

  452. We take it to him.

  453. When God says

  454. in Romans chapter 8,

    Romans 8 chapter mention

  455. and we know

  456. that for those

  457. who love God,

  458. all things work together

  459. for good.

  460. For those who are called

  461. according to his purpose,

  462. when a person faces trials

  463. and difficulties in life,

  464. we go to God

  465. and trust

  466. that he's using

  467. those circumstances

  468. for our good, right?

  469. And when God says

  470. in Matthew chapter 28,

    Matthew 28 chapter mention

  471. go therefore

  472. and make disciples

  473. of all nations,

  474. baptizing them

  475. in the name

  476. of the Father

  477. and of the Son

  478. and of the Holy Spirit.

  479. The hearer prioritizes

  480. helping others

  481. follow Jesus, right?

  482. So fruit is a positive

  483. response to God's word

  484. in the form of trust

  485. in God

  486. and obedience

  487. to his word.

  488. Third thing about,

  489. an additional thing

  490. about these parables

  491. or this parable,

  492. the soils in this parable

  493. represent different kinds

  494. of individuals

  495. and their overall response

  496. to God's word.

  497. It's not meant

  498. to represent

  499. a person's progression

  500. in the Christian life.

  501. It's not like you go

  502. from soil one

  503. to two to three to four,

  504. right?

  505. And it doesn't represent

  506. specific moments

  507. in our lives

  508. where sometimes

  509. we're hard-hearted,

  510. sometimes we're receptive,

  511. sometimes we give

  512. into temptation.

  513. Now, of course,

  514. that's true.

  515. Sometimes we do have

  516. different responses

  517. to God's word

  518. in our life,

  519. but that's not

  520. what this passage

  521. is about,

  522. and so we shouldn't

  523. try to make it

  524. say something

  525. that it's not

  526. trying to say.

  527. So instead,

  528. when looking at

  529. the totality

  530. of a person's life,

  531. that individual,

  532. how do they respond

  533. to God's word?

  534. Are they fruitful

  535. or unfruitful?

  536. And that's the question

  537. to ask ourselves.

  538. Which kind of soil

  539. am I?

  540. When I look at my

  541. life picture overall,

  542. what response

  543. have I given

  544. to God's word?

  545. Maybe this is a hard

  546. question for you

  547. to answer

  548. because honestly,

  549. you've never really

  550. heard God's word

  551. communicated to you

  552. or clearly in a way

  553. that demands a response

  554. because maybe you've

  555. heard of God's word

  556. as some nebulous thing,

  557. right?

  558. Like the Bible

  559. is God's word.

  560. That's true,

  561. right?

  562. But there is a

  563. central message

  564. in God's word

  565. that he communicates

  566. to us

  567. and that demands

  568. a response from us.

  569. In the words of Jesus

  570. in Mark chapter 1,

    Mark 1 chapter mention

  571. the time has come.

  572. The kingdom of God

  573. has come near.

  574. Repent and believe

  575. the good news.

  576. So Jesus tells us

  577. the good news

  578. of how we can be saved

  579. from God's judgment

  580. and enter into his rule

  581. and reign,

  582. which is known

  583. as his kingdom,

  584. right?

  585. That's his rule

  586. and his reign.

  587. The way things are

  588. right now

  589. aren't the way

  590. that things were

  591. meant to be.

  592. We were originally

  593. intended to be

  594. under God's rule.

  595. God in his power

  596. and beauty,

  597. he made the universe

  598. that we live in.

  599. God in his love

  600. and joy made us

  601. to know him

  602. in relationship

  603. for us to belong

  604. to him as his people.

  605. And as the one

  606. who created us,

  607. he rightfully has

  608. authority over our lives.

  609. In our lives,

  610. we were to acknowledge

  611. and honor him.

  612. We were to delight

  613. and be satisfied in him.

  614. We were to obey him,

  615. thank him,

  616. praise him,

  617. but none of us

  618. experience this

  619. in our lives

  620. as we ought to.

  621. None of us know God

  622. like this.

  623. We all fall short

  624. of who God made us

  625. to be.

  626. We read in Romans

    Romans 1 chapter mention

  627. chapter 1,

  628. for although they knew

  629. God,

  630. they did not honor him

  631. as God

  632. or give thanks to him,

  633. but they became futile

  634. in their thinking

  635. and their foolish hearts

  636. were darkened.

  637. Claiming to be wise,

  638. they became fools

  639. and exchanged the glory

  640. of the immortal God

  641. for images resembling

  642. mortal man

  643. and birds

  644. and animals

  645. and creeping things.

  646. And that's us,

  647. that's speaking of us.

  648. Instead of acknowledging

  649. God as God,

  650. we reject him

  651. and we ignore him.

  652. Instead of honoring him,

  653. we doubt that he's good

  654. and he loves us.

  655. Instead of being satisfied

  656. in him as the one

  657. who provides for us,

  658. we choose to rely

  659. on ourselves

  660. or on money

  661. or anything else really.

  662. And so we fail

  663. to meet God's standards

  664. for us

  665. and this is what

  666. the Bible calls sin.

  667. In our sin,

  668. God judges us

  669. because, again,

  670. God is just

  671. as part of his character.

  672. Romans tells us,

  673. for the wages of sin

  674. is death.

  675. And then Isaiah 59 says,

  676. but our iniquities

  677. have made a separation

  678. between you

  679. and your God

  680. and your sins

  681. have hidden his face

  682. from you

  683. so that he does not hear.

  684. Also in Romans,

  685. he will render

  686. to each one

  687. according to his works.

  688. For those who are self-seeking

  689. and do not obey the truth

  690. but obey unrighteousness,

  691. there will be wrath

  692. and fury.

  693. And as a description

  694. in Romans,

  695. Mark,

  696. sorry,

  697. in Mark 9,

  698. hell is described

  699. as where their worm

  700. does not die

  701. and the fire

  702. is not quenched.

  703. I think sometimes

  704. we tend to think

  705. of our sins

  706. as not that bad,

  707. not that serious.

  708. It's kind of like

  709. a parking ticket.

  710. Like, yes,

  711. I technically

  712. did something wrong

  713. and I have to pay for it

  714. but it's not that big

  715. of a deal, right?

  716. Overall,

  717. I'm a good person

  718. and there aren't

  719. serious consequences

  720. to this

  721. but sin

  722. is far more serious

  723. and far deeper

  724. and far more hateful

  725. than I often think of it.

  726. Sin is saying to God,

  727. God, no,

  728. I reject

  729. your authority over me

  730. and I declare

  731. my independence

  732. from you.

  733. It's saying to God,

  734. you're not good enough,

  735. you don't love me enough

  736. and you don't really

  737. care for me

  738. so I need to

  739. care and provide

  740. for myself.

  741. You're not really

  742. wise enough

  743. to know what's best for me

  744. so I need to figure

  745. things out for myself.

  746. You're not really

  747. strong enough

  748. to get things done

  749. for me

  750. so I need to

  751. rely on myself

  752. and sin is saying

  753. no to God

  754. and turning to

  755. other things

  756. to fill God's place

  757. in our lives.

  758. It's like if my

  759. one-year-old daughter,

  760. Caladriel,

  761. were to come up to me

  762. and Carol and say,

  763. you know,

  764. you're not doing a good job,

  765. you're not doing good enough,

  766. like,

  767. I'm good, right?

  768. I'm on my own.

  769. Even though, like,

  770. we love her, right?

  771. That's absurd.

  772. We're trying our best for her

  773. and if God

  774. is who he says he is,

  775. if he's good

  776. and loving,

  777. he's compassionate

  778. and powerful,

  779. if he's holy

  780. and the one

  781. who created everything

  782. and rightfully owns everything,

  783. then we see how hateful

  784. and wrong it is

  785. to reject him.

  786. So far,

  787. this is not good news,

  788. like Jesus said,

  789. right?

  790. This is pretty bad news.

  791. We're all sinners

  792. and under the just wrath

  793. and condemnation of God,

  794. we deserve punishment.

  795. But the good news

  796. is that God's solution

  797. for our sin

  798. is the sacrificial death

  799. and resurrection

  800. of Jesus Christ,

  801. the Son,

  802. like we've been singing about

  803. this morning.

  804. In Isaiah chapter 53,

    Isaiah 53 chapter mention

  805. it says,

  806. Surely he has borne our griefs

  807. and carried our sorrows,

  808. yet we esteemed him stricken,

  809. smitten by God,

  810. and afflicted.

  811. He was pierced

  812. for our transgressions,

  813. he was crushed

  814. for our iniquities.

  815. Upon him

  816. was the chastisement

  817. that brought us peace

  818. and with his wounds

  819. we are healed.

  820. All we like sheep

  821. have gone astray,

  822. we have turned everyone

  823. to his own way

  824. and the Lord

  825. has laid on him

  826. the iniquity

  827. of us all.

  828. So,

  829. God's got a problem

  830. on his hands.

  831. He's just

  832. so he needs to punish us

  833. but he also loves us

  834. and wants to save us

  835. from that punishment.

  836. So what does he do?

  837. How can he spare us

  838. from the punishment

  839. but still be just?

  840. And his solution

  841. is he sends Jesus

  842. to be born as a man

  843. to live a perfect life

  844. and therefore he saves us

  845. from the punishment

  846. that we deserve.

  847. Instead of being regarded

  848. as perfect and good

  849. like Jesus deserves,

  850. he's regarded as a sinner,

  851. as being a liar,

  852. a drunk,

  853. a murderer,

  854. a thief,

  855. being a proud man

  856. and a selfish man,

  857. all the ways

  858. that we've fallen short

  859. of God's standards for us.

  860. And 2 Corinthians 5 says,

  861. for our sake

  862. he made him to be sin

  863. who knew no sin

  864. so that in him

  865. we might become

  866. the righteousness of God.

  867. Jesus is our substitute.

  868. He switches places

  869. with us

  870. and we don't deserve it.

  871. This is God's grace,

  872. his undeserved goodness.

  873. And his salvation

  874. from sin is complete.

  875. He doesn't just forgive us

  876. but he promises us

  877. power to overcome

  878. that sin

  879. and he ultimately

  880. gives us freedom

  881. from the presence

  882. of sin itself.

  883. So God forgives us

  884. our uncontrolled anger

  885. but he doesn't leave us

  886. just to be angry

  887. all the time, right?

  888. He enables us to grow

  889. in self-control,

  890. patience,

  891. in love,

  892. in gentleness.

  893. And then when we die

  894. we move on from this life

  895. and he gives us eternal life,

  896. a life free from that sin

  897. so we don't,

  898. we can overcome

  899. that battle

  900. that we're facing every day.

  901. And so God has accomplished

  902. all of this for us

  903. but we must respond.

  904. It's like medicine, right?

  905. It can be the best medicine

  906. in the world

  907. and cure your illness

  908. but if you don't take it

  909. you can't experience

  910. its benefits.

  911. And so we can either

  912. accept and receive

  913. what he's done for us

  914. or we can reject it.

  915. To accept God's message

  916. we must turn away from sin

  917. and turn in trust

  918. toward Jesus.

  919. It's personally saying

  920. something like

  921. yes Lord Jesus

  922. I will trust you

  923. and only you.

  924. I am a sinner

  925. and I need you to save me.

  926. I'm reaching out

  927. to grab onto your hand.

  928. Save me

  929. or I die.

  930. Right?

  931. And for those of you

  932. who have heard

  933. this good news before

  934. who have received Jesus

  935. into your life

  936. let me encourage you

  937. to keep doing that.

  938. To continue receiving Jesus

  939. because the way

  940. the way in

  941. to the Christian life

  942. is also the way forward

  943. in the Christian life.

  944. We continue every day

  945. to repent of sins

  946. and to turn to Jesus

  947. in faith.

  948. And as we do

  949. we resemble Jesus

  950. more and more

  951. and we bear fruit

  952. in our lives.

  953. So this is the gospel.

  954. This is the good news

  955. of salvation

  956. and all of God's word

  957. centers around Jesus

  958. and what he's done for us.

  959. So the question is

  960. what will you do with it?

  961. How will you respond?

  962. What kind of soil

  963. are you?

  964. Take care how

  965. you hear God's word.

  966. Are you the first soil?

  967. Maybe you think

  968. this message

  969. isn't for you.

  970. You turn it down

  971. and ignore it

  972. maybe politely.

  973. It seems irrelevant

  974. and impractical.

  975. There are more important

  976. things in life.

  977. You need to work.

  978. You need to find

  979. someone to marry.

  980. You need to live life

  981. to the fullest

  982. and reach your full potential.

  983. But what could be

  984. more relevant

  985. and practical

  986. than securing

  987. your present

  988. and future well-being?

  989. And what's the point

  990. of working at things

  991. like marriage

  992. and work

  993. and everything else

  994. apart from God

  995. who gives us

  996. meaning for these things

  997. and makes it possible

  998. to do these things

  999. well?

  1000. Maybe you have

  1001. doubts and concerns.

  1002. Maybe this sounds

  1003. somewhat compelling

  1004. but you're not sure.

  1005. You're not sure

  1006. if this message

  1007. is actually true

  1008. and credible.

  1009. And that's okay.

  1010. It might not seem

  1011. that all of this

  1012. fits into a unified

  1013. and cohesive whole

  1014. but if that's you

  1015. don't stay there.

  1016. Take the next step.

  1017. Ask those questions.

  1018. Don't rest

  1019. until you're satisfied

  1020. with the answers.

1021. If you'd like to talk

  1022. with someone

  1023. please talk to me

  1024. or Matt or Sean

  1025. and we'd love

  1026. to talk with you

  1027. and question with you

  1028. and wrestle with you.

  1029. Jesus says

  1030. in Matthew chapter 7

    Matthew 7 chapter mention

1031. ask and it will be

  1032. given to you.

1033. Seek and you will find.

1034. Knock and it will be

  1035. open to you.

  1036. And Jesus

1037. he's true to his word.

  1038. He's trustworthy.

  1039. We can trust him.

1040. Be warned that this is

  1041. neither a light affair

  1042. nor a neutral one.

  1043. What is at stake

  1044. is your eternal well-being.

1045. And you have an enemy

  1046. who wants to steal

  1047. this message

  1048. and harm you.

  1049. The spiritual realm

  1050. is unseen

  1051. but it's not

  1052. non-existent

  1053. nor inactive.

  1054. The devil's schemes

  1055. can be subtle

  1056. but they're devastating.

  1057. C.S. Lewis

  1058. the author

1059. of the Chronicles of Narnia

  1060. wrote many other works

  1061. and one of them

  1062. is the Screwtape Letters.

  1063. It's a fictional set

  1064. of letters

  1065. from a senior demon

  1066. named Screwtape

  1067. to his nephew

  1068. called Wormwood

  1069. who's a junior tempter.

  1070. Right?

  1071. So he's mentoring

  1072. his nephew

  1073. and Wormwood

  1074. is responsible

  1075. for getting a man

  1076. known as the patient

  1077. to hell.

  1078. So in one episode

  1079. Screwtape writes

  1080. to Wormwood,

  1081. I once had a patient

  1082. a sound atheist

  1083. who used to read

  1084. in the British Museum.

1085. One day as he sat reading

  1086. I saw a train of thought

  1087. in his mind

  1088. beginning to go

  1089. the wrong way.

  1090. The enemy,

  1091. God because they're demons,

  1092. right?

1093. Of course was at his elbow

  1094. in a moment.

  1095. Before I knew where I was

  1096. I saw my 20 years' work

  1097. beginning to totter.

1098. If I lost my mind,

  1099. lost my head

  1100. and begun to attempt

  1101. a defense by argument

1102. I should have been undone.

1103. But I was not such a fool.

  1104. I struck instantly

1105. at the part of the man

  1106. which I had best

  1107. under my control

  1108. and suggested

1109. that it was just about time

  1110. he had some lunch.

  1111. The enemy presumably

  1112. made the counter suggestion,

  1113. you know how

1114. one can never quite overhear

1115. what he says to them,

1116. that this was more important

  1117. than lunch.

  1118. At least I think

1119. that must have been his line

  1120. for when I said,

  1121. quite.

  1122. In fact,

  1123. much too important

  1124. to tackle it

1125. at the end of a morning.

  1126. The patient brightened up

  1127. considerably

  1128. and by the time

  1129. I had added

  1130. much better comeback

  1131. after lunch

  1132. and go into it

  1133. with a fresh mind.

  1134. He was already

  1135. halfway to the door.

1136. Once he was in the street,

  1137. the battle was won.

  1138. I showed him a newsboy

  1139. shouting the midday paper

  1140. and a number 73 bus

  1141. going past

  1142. and before he reached

1143. the bottom of the steps

1144. I had got into him

  1145. an unalterable conviction

  1146. that whatever odd ideas

  1147. might come into a man's head

1148. when he was shut up alone

  1149. with his books,

1150. a healthy dose of real life

  1151. by which he meant

1152. the bus and the newsboy

1153. was enough to show him

1154. that all that sort of thing

  1155. just couldn't be true.

  1156. He knew he'd had

  1157. a narrow escape

  1158. and in later years

  1159. was fond of articulate,

  1160. of talking about

  1161. that inarticulate sense

  1162. for actuality

  1163. which is our ultimate

  1164. safeguard against

  1165. the aberrations

  1166. of mere logic.

  1167. He is now safe

  1168. in our Father's house.

  1169. So take the time

  1170. to seriously consider

  1171. God's word.

  1172. Is it reasonable?

  1173. Is it credible?

  1174. Does it resonate

  1175. with what you've experienced

  1176. in life?

1177. And so ask those questions.

1178. So that's the first soil.

  1179. Maybe you're one

  1180. of the other two

  1181. unproductive soils.

  1182. The second soil

  1183. on the rock

  1184. or the third soil

  1185. with the thorns.

1186. So both of these soils

  1187. allow God's word

1188. to germinate to a degree

  1189. but neither

  1190. lets it fully grow

  1191. and be fruitful.

  1192. Unlike the first

  1193. and fourth soils,

  1194. it's unclear

  1195. if these people

  1196. are saved, right?

  1197. But the point

  1198. of this parable

  1199. isn't about

  1200. where that line

  1201. is between faith

  1202. and unbelief.

  1203. The point is about

  1204. how we can best

  1205. live the Christian life.

1206. So only the fourth soil

  1207. does that.

  1208. So it's unclear

  1209. in this passage.

  1210. The second soil

  1211. represents a shallow faith

  1212. that cannot survive

  1213. the pressures

  1214. of persecution.

  1215. God's free salvation

  1216. is an amazing gift

  1217. and totally worth it

  1218. but it does have

  1219. its costs.

  1220. It does have

  1221. its difficulties

  1222. and one of them

  1223. is persecution.

  1224. This makes sense

  1225. because as Jesus'

  1226. disciples,

  1227. we follow

  1228. in Jesus' steps

  1229. and he was persecuted

  1230. and he died.

1231. He died on the cross.

  1232. In Cambridge Mass

  1233. in the United States

  1234. of America

1235. in this day and age,

  1236. our persecution

  1237. will likely not

  1238. take the form

  1239. of physical abuse

  1240. and imprisonment

  1241. and death.

  1242. More likely,

  1243. it'll involve

  1244. social rejection

  1245. and contempt,

  1246. being thought of

  1247. as intolerant

  1248. or small-minded

  1249. or dumb

  1250. or being too

  1251. morally uptight.

  1252. You might be

  1253. the only one

  1254. of your colleagues

  1255. at your firm

  1256. who doesn't enjoy

  1257. getting hammered

  1258. regularly

  1259. or who isn't

  1260. living and sleeping

  1261. with your girlfriend

  1262. or boyfriend

1263. and when the pressure's on,

  1264. how do you respond?

  1265. Don't give in

  1266. to the pressure

1267. but cling to God's word.

  1268. Follow in the footsteps

  1269. of the Lord Jesus.

  1270. Hebrews chapter 12 says,

    Hebrews 12 chapter mention

  1271. Therefore,

  1272. since we are surrounded

  1273. by so great

  1274. a cloud of witnesses,

1275. let us also lay aside

  1276. every weight

  1277. and sin which clings

  1278. so closely

  1279. and let us run

  1280. with endurance

1281. the race that is set

  1282. before us.

  1283. Looking to Jesus,

  1284. the founder and perfecter

  1285. of our faith,

  1286. who for the joy

1287. that was set before him

  1288. endured the cross,

  1289. despising the shame

  1290. and is seated

  1291. at the right hand

1292. of the throne of God.

  1293. Consider him

  1294. who endured from sinners

  1295. such hostility

  1296. against himself

1297. so that you may not

  1298. grow weary

  1299. or faint-hearted.

  1300. So Jesus went

  1301. through the same thing

  1302. and what he did

1303. was he set his eyes,

  1304. set his focus

  1305. on the joy

  1306. before him

1307. and not on the difficulties.

  1308. So forget

  1309. about that persecution.

  1310. It's only for a moment,

  1311. even if it's for

  1312. your whole lifetime.

  1313. Look to the Lord

  1314. and consider the joy

  1315. set before you,

1316. the joy of being with Christ,

  1317. of loving him

  1318. in return

  1319. and response

  1320. with your life.

  1321. Look to other Christians

  1322. around for love

  1323. and support as well.

  1324. Don't go it alone.

  1325. The third soil

  1326. also fails

  1327. to produce mature fruit

  1328. and maybe

  1329. this represents

  1330. your life.

  1331. It represents

  1332. those who

  1333. are choked out

  1334. by an excessive

  1335. concern

  1336. for earthly affairs,

  1337. for earthly pleasures,

  1338. for one's welfare

  1339. and possessions

  1340. and comfort.

  1341. I say excessive

  1342. because

  1343. these things

  1344. aren't insignificant

  1345. or unimportant.

  1346. The issue

  1347. is one

  1348. of misplaced priorities.

  1349. There's

  1350. too much concern,

  1351. too much energy,

  1352. too much time

  1353. and space

  1354. in hearts and minds

  1355. given to these things.

1356. So what does this look like?

1357. You might worry too much

1358. about how to take care

  1359. of yourself financially,

  1360. your income,

  1361. retirement funds,

  1362. your home,

  1363. so you overwork

  1364. to get more stuff,

  1365. to get more money,

  1366. to get that house,

  1367. to get those clothes.

  1368. Maybe our top priority

  1369. is finding a spouse.

  1370. So even though

  1371. you're at a great church

  1372. that helps you grow

  1373. in love and faith,

  1374. you hop from church

  1375. to church

  1376. looking for

  1377. the best looking group

  1378. of singles

  1379. and you don't

  1380. put down roots.

  1381. Or maybe you're

  1382. all about

  1383. maxing out

  1384. life's pleasures.

1385. You want to step foot

  1386. in every continent

  1387. in your life,

  1388. go to 100 countries,

  1389. add to your list

  1390. of restaurants

  1391. you've eaten.

  1392. And again,

1393. it's not that these things

  1394. are bad in themselves,

  1395. it's that

  1396. if they take

  1397. too much energy

  1398. and too much time,

  1399. if these pursuits

  1400. take up

  1401. too much

  1402. of the space

  1403. of your life,

  1404. then not enough

  1405. is given

  1406. to God's word

  1407. so that it can

  1408. manifest results

  1409. in your life.

  1410. There's not enough

  1411. time to read

  1412. God's word,

  1413. to meditate on it,

  1414. to spend meaningful

  1415. time in conversation

  1416. with God

  1417. in prayer,

  1418. building relationships

  1419. with other Christians

  1420. to encourage them,

  1421. developing relationships

  1422. with non-Christians

  1423. to share Christ's love

  1424. with them.

  1425. And you might know

  1426. and agree that

  1427. these things are good,

  1428. you're just too busy,

  1429. you're too tired

  1430. for anything else.

  1431. God might be

  1432. on your priority list

  1433. just at number 10

  1434. or number 2

  1435. but not number 1.

  1436. Or are you

  1437. the four soil?

  1438. Of these four soils,

1439. this is the only one

  1440. that is commended

  1441. and that we should

  1442. strive to be like.

  1443. We are to respond

  1444. with an honest

  1445. and good heart

  1446. which means a heart

  1447. that is humble,

  1448. sincere,

  1449. that seeks to do

  1450. what is right

  1451. and people with

  1452. honest and good hearts

  1453. are receptive

  1454. to God's word.

1455. We are to hold fast

  1456. to the word

  1457. which is a description

  1458. of faith.

  1459. When persecution

  1460. and trials

  1461. come in life,

  1462. instead of focusing

  1463. on the difficulties

  1464. or the stress

  1465. or contempt of others,

  1466. we choose to cling

  1467. to God's word

  1468. and persevere.

  1469. When we're ridiculed

  1470. for not drinking

  1471. excessively

  1472. or we're belittled

  1473. for choosing

  1474. to honor God

  1475. with sex,

  1476. we might think

  1477. of Matthew 5,

    Matthew 5:8

  1478. verse 8.

  1479. Blessed are the pure

  1480. in heart

1481. for they shall see God.

  1482. We consider it better

  1483. to see God

  1484. and have God

  1485. than to have

  1486. the fleeting pleasures

  1487. of life

  1488. or the good opinion

  1489. of others.

  1490. This soil also bears

  1491. fruit with patience.

  1492. Patience is necessary

  1493. because bearing fruit

  1494. takes time, right?

1495. It can seem slow going

  1496. or unsuccessful.

  1497. But when things

  1498. don't go our way,

  1499. when we don't see

  1500. results fast enough,

1501. or you seem to be

  1502. dealing with the same

1503. sins over and over again

  1504. and you're not

  1505. making progress,

  1506. you don't give up,

  1507. but you persevere.

  1508. You're patient.

  1509. You keep going.

1510. And I pray that we

  1511. would all be

  1512. this fourth soil,

  1513. that we would be

  1514. humble,

  1515. that we would be

  1516. sincere to receive

  1517. God's word,

  1518. and we would hold

  1519. onto it with

  1520. perseverance and

  1521. patience so that

  1522. God's word can do

  1523. its work in our

  1524. heart and in our

  1525. lives.

  1526. So that's the

  1527. parable of the

  1528. sower and of the

  1529. soils.

  1530. There are two more

  1531. sections in this

  1532. passage that I will

  1533. spend less time on.

  1534. Verse 16 refers to

1535. a lamp being put on

1536. a stand so that it

  1537. can be used

  1538. effectively rather than

  1539. hidden under a jar

  1540. or bed.

  1541. This light refers to

  1542. Jesus and his

  1543. teaching.

  1544. He was not given

  1545. to be hidden,

  1546. but Jesus shines to

  1547. his hearers in this

  1548. world and Jesus

  1549. demands a response.

  1550. And we can reflect

1551. that as well as we

1552. obey him and as we

  1553. reflect his teaching

  1554. to others.

  1555. Light has a revealing

  1556. and exposing quality

  1557. as well.

  1558. And so just like

  1559. sunlight will hit

  1560. things in our world

  1561. and it shows its

  1562. colors, by our

  1563. response when God's

  1564. word comes to us,

  1565. we reveal our hearts

  1566. and our thoughts

  1567. regarding God,

  1568. whether we receive

  1569. him or not.

1570. In verse 18, we are

  1571. commanded to take

  1572. care how we hear.

  1573. Those who hear in

  1574. faith, trusting and

  1575. obeying what they've

  1576. heard and understood

  1577. so far, they will

  1578. receive more spiritual

  1579. blessing to understand,

  1580. to trust, to obey

  1581. more.

  1582. But those who don't

  1583. receive what they've

  1584. already been given

  1585. will lose even what

  1586. little they have.

  1587. There's no neutral

  1588. ground.

  1589. And I think this

  1590. makes sense in a

  1591. practical way too.

  1592. I mean, I heard

  1593. Carolyn, I think,

  1594. this week talk about

  1595. in the workplace how

  1596. if you have something

  1597. important to do, you

  1598. give it to the

  1599. busiest person in the

  1600. office.

1601. Why do you do that?

  1602. They're busy because

  1603. they're responsible and

  1604. they get things done,

  1605. right?

  1606. So that's similar here.

  1607. Do you find that

  1608. you've had a soft and

  1609. receptive heart earlier,

1610. but now your heart is

  1611. somewhat dull,

  1612. hardened, confused in

  1613. understanding?

  1614. It's worth some

  1615. self-reflection to see

1616. if there's any area of

  1617. disobedience in your

  1618. lives.

  1619. Maybe God spoke to

  1620. you about some area,

1621. but you fail to listen

  1622. and obey.

1623. So be sure to obey God

  1624. in that area before

  1625. expecting more.

  1626. Finally, in verses 19

1627. through 21, we see an

  1628. encounter between Jesus

1629. and his mother and his

  1630. brothers.

1631. They come to see him,

1632. but they can't reach him.

1633. And Jesus is told this.

  1634. The crowd might have

  1635. expected Jesus after

  1636. hearing this to say,

  1637. my family is here,

  1638. everyone make way,

  1639. clear a path, right?

  1640. They're important to me.

1641. But instead of doing that,

  1642. he takes the opportunity

  1643. to give a lesson.

  1644. Who is Jesus' family?

1645. Who is special to him?

1646. Not his family by blood,

1647. but those who hear and do

  1648. God's word.

  1649. Now to be clear,

  1650. this isn't to devalue

  1651. human relationships.

1652. God places a high value

  1653. on our family relationships.

  1654. For example,

  1655. in 1 Timothy 5,

  1656. we read,

1657. but if anyone does not

  1658. provide for his relatives

  1659. and especially for members

  1660. of his household,

1661. he has denied the faith

1662. and is worse than an

  1663. unbeliever.

  1664. And in John 19,

  1665. while Jesus was hanging

1666. on the cross in the middle

  1667. of being crucified,

1668. he's mindful to take care

  1669. of his mother.

  1670. It says,

1671. when Jesus saw his mother

  1672. and the disciple whom

  1673. he loved standing nearby,

1674. he said to his mother,

  1675. woman,

  1676. behold your son.

1677. Then he said to the disciple,

  1678. behold your mother.

  1679. And from that hour,

  1680. the disciple took her

  1681. to his own home.

1682. So he was a good,

  1683. good eldest son,

  1684. right,

1685. to make sure that his mother

  1686. was taken care of

  1687. after he died.

  1688. And so this isn't

1689. so much lowering a family,

  1690. but it's an elevation

1691. of the family of God,

  1692. right?

1693. Those who hear the gospel

  1694. and trust Jesus

  1695. enter into God's family,

1696. a family centered around God

  1697. that will last

  1698. into eternity.

  1699. So my friends,

  1700. brothers and sisters,

  1701. it's my desire

  1702. that we would all

  1703. be family members

1704. in the family of God.

1705. Don't you want to be

1706. a child of the God

  1707. of the universe

  1708. who made you

  1709. and loves you?

  1710. But that choice

1711. is up to each of us.

  1712. Will you choose

1713. to be in Jesus' family?

  1714. Will you choose

  1715. to listen

  1716. to God's word carefully?

  1717. Will you hold on

  1718. and persevere

  1719. and be patient

  1720. and bear fruit

  1721. and therefore show evidence

1722. that you belong to God?

1723. I pray that it would be so

  1724. with each of us.

  1725. Please take a moment

1726. to reflect on today's message

  1727. as we move into

  1728. our time of prayer.

  1729. Amen.

  1730. Amen.

  1731. Amen.

  1732. Amen.

  1733. Amen.

  1734. Amen.

  1735. Amen.

  1736. Amen.

  1737. Amen.

  1738. Amen.

  1739. Amen.

  1740. Amen.

  1741. Amen.

  1742. Amen.

  1743. Amen.

  1744. Amen.

  1745. Amen.

  1746. Amen.

  1747. Amen.

  1748. Amen.

  1749. Amen.

  1750. Amen.
