  1. Heavenly Father, your word is powerful.

  2. Through your word you create.

  3. Through your word you save, turn us into new creations.

  4. And it is before that mighty word we humble ourselves now and incline our ears.

  5. Lord, would you speak to us?

  6. Teach us about your son, Jesus Christ.

  7. And challenge us.

  8. Change us.

  9. So we become bold witnesses of the good news we receive from him.

  10. Amen.

  11. It's in his precious name we pray.

  12. Amen.

  13. Luke chapter 8, verses 22 to 39.

    Luke 8:22–39

  14. Amen.

  15. One day he got into a boat with his disciples and he said to them, let us go across to the other side of the lake.

  16. So they set out.

  17. And as they sailed, he fell asleep.

  18. And a windstorm came down on the lake and they were filling with water and were in danger.

  19. And they went and woke him saying, master, master, we are perishing.

  20. And he awoke and rebuked the wind and the raging waves.

  21. And they ceased.

  22. And there was a calm.

  23. He said to them, where is your faith?

  24. And they were afraid.

  25. And they marveled, saying to one another, who then is this that he commands even winds and water?

  26. And they obey him.

  27. Then they sailed to the country of the Gerasenes, which is opposite Galilee.

  28. When Jesus had stepped out on land, there met him a man from the city who had demons.

  29. For a long time he had worn no clothes, and he had not lived in a house but among the tombs.

  30. When he saw Jesus, he cried out and fell down before him and said with a loud voice,

  31. What have you to do with me, Jesus, son of the most high God?

  32. I beg you, do not torment me.

  33. For he had commanded the unclean spirit to come out of the man.

  34. For many a time it had seized him.

  35. He was kept under guard and bound with chains and shackles,

  36. but he would break the bonds and be driven by the demon into the desert.

  37. Jesus then asked him,

  38. What is your name?

  39. And he said,

  40. Legion.

  41. For many demons had entered him.

  42. And they begged him not to command them to depart into the abyss.

  43. Now, a large herd of pigs was feeding there on the hillside,

  44. and they begged him to let them enter these.

  45. So he gave them permission.

  46. Then the demons came out of the man and entered the pigs,

  47. and the herd rushed down the steep bank into the lake and drowned.

  48. When the herdsmen saw what had happened,

  49. they fled and told it in the city and in the country.

  50. Then people went out to see what had happened,

  51. and they came to Jesus and found the man from whom the demons had gone,

  52. sitting at the feet of Jesus,

  53. clothed and in his right mind.

  54. And they were afraid.

  55. And those who had seen and told them how the demon-possessed man had been healed.

  56. Then all the people of the surrounding country of the Gerasenes

  57. asked him to depart from them,

  58. for they were seized with great fear.

  59. So he got into the boat and returned.

  60. The man from whom the demons had gone begged that he might be with him,

  61. but Jesus sent him away, saying,

  62. Return to your home and declare how much God has done for you.

  63. And he went away, proclaiming throughout the whole city

  64. how much Jesus had done for him.

  65. This is the word of the Lord.

  66. It's not every day that we get to witness something that has extraordinary power,

  67. something eye-inspiring, so powerful that it's unnerving to be in the presence of.

  68. Maybe something like the tornadoes of the Great Plains of Oklahoma,

  69. or maybe earthquakes that can topple buildings,

  70. as in California or other places,

  71. or tsunamis like Indonesia and Japan.

  72. When you encounter something like that,

  73. it makes you feel so small,

  74. and it fills you with fear and wonder

  75. because of the sheer power and force of it.

  76. And here in this passage,

  77. they encounter such force of nature,

  78. but they encounter something even more powerful than that.

  79. They encounter a person who has power over nature

  80. and even over the evil spirits

  81. that can rule a human being.

  82. And this passage is intended to confirm for us,

  83. that's Luke's intention,

  84. Jesus' identity as the Son of God and the Messianic King.

  85. And in this passage, we learn that

  86. as those who have experienced Jesus' saving power,

  87. we should proclaim what he has done for us.

  88. That's really the main point of this passage.

  89. And the passage is divided into two sections.

  90. First section, we see Jesus' power over nature,

  91. verses 22 to 25,

  92. and then his power over demons in 26 to 39.

  93. First, let's look at his power over the demons

  94. in verses 22 to 25.

  95. So one day, Jesus invites his disciples

  96. to go and across to the other side of the lake.

  97. And verse 23 tells us that

  98. as they sailed, Jesus fell asleep.

  99. And the windstorm came down on the lake

  100. and they were filling with water and were in danger.

  101. So the lake in view is the Sea of Galilee,

  102. which sits about 700 feet below sea level,

  103. and it has hills surrounding it.

  104. And because of its geographic setting,

  105. the cool air rushing down the hills

  106. would sometimes collide with the warm air

  107. sitting on top of the sea,

  108. and it would create sudden storms.

  109. It's not an uncommon event.

  110. And so on this occasion,

  111. the windstorm that occurred in this manner

  112. was so severe that their ship was filling with water,

  113. and it was endangering the entire crew.

  114. But interestingly, Jesus was fast asleep.

  115. So verse 24 says,

  116. The disciples went and woke him, saying,

  117. Master, Master, we are perishing.

  118. Their later response to Jesus' miracle

  119. shows that they weren't expecting Jesus

  120. to perform a miracle.

  121. Since the ship is about to sink,

  122. they're kind of indignant that Jesus is sleeping.

  123. I mean, what is going on here?

  124. Surely we could use an extra pair of hands

  125. to mend the sail or at least dump some water out the boat.

  126. Like, what?

  127. Jesus, Master, Master, help, we are perishing.

  128. So this is not a faith-filled response,

  129. but it's a fearful response,

  130. a faithless response.

  131. And we can hear their panic

  132. in the way they repeat the word,

  133. Master, Master, Master.

  134. We're perishing.

  135. And when Jesus is woken up by his disciples,

  136. it says in verses 24 to 25,

  137. He rebuked the wind and the raging waves,

  138. and they ceased.

  139. And there was a calm.

  140. He said to them,

  141. Where is your faith?

  142. And they were afraid,

  143. and they marveled,

  144. saying to one another,

  145. Who then is this,

  146. that he commands even winds and water,

  147. and they obey him?

  148. So there's a deliberate contrast here

  149. that Luke is drawing

  150. between Jesus' sleeping

  151. and his disciples panicking.

  152. That's instructive for our own lives.

  153. Look at verse 23 one more time with me.

  154. It says,

  155. As they sailed,

  156. he fell asleep,

  157. and a windstorm came down on the lake,

  158. and they were filling with water

  159. and were in danger.

  160. Of course,

  161. it's the boat that's filling with water,

  162. but not the passengers themselves,

  163. but by saying that they,

  164. the disciples,

  165. were filling with water,

  166. Luke conveys this kind of sense

  167. of present immediate danger.

  168. It's an emergency.

  169. So the boat was getting swamped with water,

  170. and they were feeling swamped

  171. and overcome themselves,

  172. and so they wake Jesus up urgently,

  173. and notice the stark contrast,

  174. Jesus is sleeping

  175. while the disciples are getting swamped,

  176. in danger,

  177. and they say they are perishing.

  178. You wonder how they can be in the same boat, right?

  179. And the contrast is revealed,

  180. the point of the contrast is revealed

  181. in Jesus' implicit rebuke in verse 25.

  182. He said to them,

  183. where is your faith?

  184. Jesus is identifying the source

  185. of the disciples' fearfulness

  186. as their faithlessness.

  187. They panicked whilst he rested

  188. because the difference is in the faith.

  189. The fact that Jesus was with them

  190. did not keep the disciples

  191. from getting caught in a dangerous storm,

  192. and later in Luke's sequel to his gospel,

  193. the Acts of the Apostles,

  194. the book of Acts,

  195. the fact that the Holy Spirit

  196. is with the disciples

  197. does not keep them from getting martyred

  198. and persecuted for their faith in Jesus.

  199. So the fact that you are a Christian

  200. and that God is with you

  201. does not mean that your entire life

  202. will be smooth sailing.

  203. However, the fact that God is with you

  204. does mean that you can trust him

  205. and rest in him

  206. in the midst of your trials and sufferings.

  207. Do you feel swamped in your life?

  208. Do you feel like you're being overcome?

  209. Do you feel threatened by your life's circumstances?

  210. Do you fear that you are perishing?

  211. What you're facing has not caught God by surprise.

  212. He's still reigning majestically from his throne,

  213. and he has total control

  214. over the minutest detail

  215. of this world and of your life.

  216. And that all-powerful,

  217. all-knowing God

  218. is not a cruel tyrant,

  219. but he is your loving father

  220. if you are a Christian.

  221. He's your gracious helper.

  222. And it's faith in that reality

  223. that dispels fear from our lives,

  224. and that faith is the key

  225. to resting in God.

  226. Psalm 121, 1-4 says this,

  227. The God who made heaven and earth

  228. is our help,

  229. and it's because the God who keeps us

  230. does not sleep

  231. that we as his people

  232. can sleep in peace.

  233. A faith-filled Christian

  234. can, and they still do,

  235. get tired and sleep-deprived,

  236. but a faith-filled Christian

  237. is never restless.

  238. So if your life is characterized

  239. by restless busyness,

  240. a frantic attempt

  241. to regain control of your lives

  242. that seem to be spiraling out of control,

  243. or frantic attempt

  244. to avoid something

  245. that you dread and fear,

  246. then let Jesus' incisive question

  247. dwell in your mind today.

  248. Where is your faith?

  249. Is God God or not?

  250. Does he care for you or not?

  251. Even when we are manning the ship,

  252. it's the Lord who is ultimately

  253. in control and driving our lives.

  254. Only those who have faith,

  255. Jesus teaches here,

  256. can sleep on a ship

  257. being tossed to and fro

  258. by the waves.

  259. And Jesus' admonishment

  260. of his disciples

  261. for their lack of faith

  262. in this passage

  263. does make it appropriate

  264. for us to apply it

  265. to ourselves

  266. and encourage us,

  267. ourselves,

  268. really to trust in God

  269. and have faith in him

  270. in the midst of our circumstances.

  271. But that's actually

  272. not the main point

  273. of this passage.

  274. The main point comes

  275. at the end,

  276. verse 25,

  277. when the apostles

  278. themselves ask,

  279. who then is this

  280. that he commands

  281. even winds and water

  282. and they obey him?

  283. Because this question

  284. comes at the end

  285. of the section,

  286. it's what's emphasized

  287. and what sums up

  288. this entire episode.

  289. So who is this Jesus

  290. that even the winds

  291. and water,

  292. these inanimate

  293. and powerful forces

  294. of nature,

  295. they obey him?

  296. Look again at the language

  297. used,

  298. verse 24,

  299. Jesus rebuked the wind

  300. and the raging waves.

  301. He spoke to them

  302. as if they're people.

  303. He spoke to them

  304. as if they're well-trained pets

  305. that will respond

  306. to his every command.

  307. It's similar to how

  308. Jesus rebuked the fever

  309. earlier in chapter 4.

  310. Who then is this

  311. that he commands

  312. even winds and water

  313. and they obey him?

  314. And this is a weighty question

  315. because throughout

  316. the Old Testament,

  317. it's God himself

  318. who commands winds

  319. and water.

  320. Psalm 104.3,

  321. Psalm 135.7

  322. describes God

  323. as the one who brings

  324. forth wind

  325. from his storehouses.

  326. Psalm 104.3

  327. describes

  328. God poetically

  329. as the one who rides

  330. on the wings

  331. of the wind.

  332. Not only that,

  333. recalling God's deliverance

  334. from Israel,

  335. deliverance of Israel

  336. from Egypt

  337. through the Red Sea,

  338. the Old Testament

  339. frequently describes

  340. God as the one

  341. who rebukes

  342. the sea

  343. and makes it dry.

  344. It's God

  345. who rebukes

  346. the sea

  347. throughout Scripture.

  348. So when Jesus

  349. rebukes the sea

  350. and it does

  351. his bidding,

  352. when the storm

  353. calms down,

  354. the question

  355. is automatically

  356. raised.

  357. Who then

  358. is this

  359. that he commands

  360. even winds and water

  361. and they obey him?

  362. And the only

  363. biblically

  364. consistent answer

  365. to that question

  366. is that Jesus

  367. is the Lord God.

  368. So do you know

  369. about this Jesus?

  370. If even winds

  371. and the waves

  372. obey him,

  373. Luke is implying

  374. that Jesus is someone

  375. we should follow

  376. and obey.

  377. And some of you

  378. are here today

  379. not yet as followers

  380. of Jesus Christ

  381. but as observers.

  382. Considering the teachings

  383. and the claims

  384. of Jesus,

  385. wondering who Jesus is,

  386. and these accounts

  387. are not a product

  388. of people's imagination.

  389. The earliest followers

  390. of Jesus

  391. were not politically

  392. powerful

  393. and following Jesus

  394. meant persecution,

  395. exclusion,

  396. and martyrdom

  397. for many of them.

  398. They persisted

  399. as witness

  400. of Jesus Christ

  401. not because

  402. it was socially,

  403. financially,

  404. or politically

  405. advantageous for them

  406. but because

  407. they had been

  408. confronted by

  409. events like this.

  410. And ultimately

  411. the death

  412. and resurrection

  413. of Jesus

  414. that forced them

  415. to come to terms

  416. with who Jesus

  417. really is.

  418. Who is this man?

  419. The Gospel of Luke

  420. is not a fairy tale.

  421. In fact,

  422. from the beginning

  423. to the end

  424. it has clear marks

  425. of the best

  426. of Greek historiography.

  427. Sir William Ramsey

  428. is a 20th century,

  429. he was a Scottish

  430. archaeologist,

  431. he died.

  432. By the time

  433. he died though,

  434. he was considered

  435. the foremost authority

  436. on the history

  437. of Asia Minor.

  438. And he was trained

  439. in the Tübingen

  440. school of thought.

  441. It's the German

  442. skeptical thought

  443. line of theology

  444. where people doubted

  445. the reliability

  446. of the New Testament.

  447. That's how he was trained.

  448. And he brought

  449. that skeptical lens

  450. to the Bible

  451. not expecting it

  452. to have any accuracies

  453. with the decisive

  454. bias against it.

  455. But as he was studying

  456. Luke in particular

  457. and the geographical

  458. and historical details

  459. that he included

  460. and with great precision,

  461. he wrote this,

  462. Luke is a historian

  463. of the first rank.

  464. Not merely are his statements

  465. of fact trustworthy,

  466. he should be placed

  467. along with the very

  468. greatest of historians.

  469. Who do you say

  470. Jesus is?

  471. Who then is this

  472. that he commands

  473. even the winds

  474. and water

  475. and they obey him?

  476. Jesus is not just

  477. a great teacher

  478. or a sage.

  479. He claimed to be

  480. the son of God

  481. and his works

  482. attest to that reality.

  483. And if he really is

  484. who he said he is,

  485. that he is worthy

  486. of our worship.

  487. He is worthy

  488. of our complete

  489. submission

  490. and allegiance.

  491. And if you're not yet

  492. a follower of Christ,

  493. I urge you this morning

  494. to come to terms

  495. with who he is

  496. today.

  497. Having demonstrated

  498. Jesus' power

  499. over nature,

  500. Luke next recounts

  501. an event

  502. that demonstrates

  503. his power

  504. over spirits.

  505. In verses 26

  506. to 39,

  507. he has power

  508. not only over

  509. the physical realm

  510. but also over

  511. the spiritual realm.

  512. When the waters

  513. come down once again,

  514. it says in verse 26

  515. that Jesus and his

  516. disciples sailed

  517. to the country

  518. of the Gerasenes,

  519. which is opposite

  520. Galilee.

  521. And it's important

  522. to note that this

  523. is a Gentile region.

  524. It's the Gentile region

  525. opposite Galilee

  526. where primarily

  527. non-Jews lived.

  528. Verse 27 continues,

  529. When Jesus had stepped

  530. out on land,

  531. there met him

  532. a man from the city

  533. who had demons.

  534. For a long time

  535. he had worn no clothes

  536. and he had not lived

  537. in a house

  538. but among the tombs.

  539. Luke tells us

  540. that this stranger

  541. had demons,

  542. plural.

  543. Multiple demons

  544. have possessed this man

  545. and this is confirmed

  546. later by verse 30

  547. as well.

  548. Luke does use

  549. the singular

  550. in verse 29

  551. to refer to them

  552. as a unity

  553. in an abstraction

  554. of the demon

  555. but this is a plural,

  556. this is a multiple possession.

  557. There are many demons

  558. who have indwelled this man

  559. and so that's not,

  560. this is not an ordinary

  561. demon possession.

  562. And as a result

  563. he went around naked

  564. for many years

  565. but he's probably

  566. covered with scars,

  567. no clothes,

  568. so much shame

  569. and ostracism

  570. that comes with that

  571. as well.

  572. And he lived

  573. among the tombs

  574. so he's really living

  575. a ghastly existence.

  576. And the Jews

  577. in particular

  578. considered contact

  579. with the dead

  580. including the tomb

  581. and being in the vicinity

  582. of the dead

  583. it brought ritual uncleanness

  584. according to Numbers 19.

  585. So the fact

  586. that this man

  587. is living among the tombs

  588. highlights this man's

  589. uncleanness.

  590. Not only is he possessed

  591. by an unclean spirit

  592. he's ritually unclean

  593. he's among the dead.

  594. Everything about

  595. this place

  596. and this man

  597. is unclean.

  598. And verse 28

  599. tells us that

  600. when he saw Jesus

  601. he cried out

  602. and fell down

  603. before him

  604. and said with a loud voice

  605. what have you to do

  606. with me Jesus

  607. son of the most high God

  608. I beg you

  609. do not torment me.

  610. Of course

  611. this is not really

  612. the man speaking

  613. but the demons

  614. who not control him

  615. and once again

  616. Christ's identity

  617. comes to the fore.

  618. Who is this man?

  619. And unlike

  620. Jesus' disciples

  621. who have trouble

  622. recognizing Jesus

  623. for who he really is

  624. these demons

  625. have no trouble

  626. they say clearly

  627. he's the son

  628. of the most high God

  629. recognizing his

  630. superior authority

  631. and power

  632. and to demonstrate

  633. that they prostrate

  634. themselves before him

  635. and they say

  636. two things.

  637. First

  638. they say

  639. what have you

  640. to do with me?

  641. He's saying

  642. basically

  643. Jesus

  644. what do you

  645. the son of the most high God

  646. have to do with me

  647. unclean spirit?

  648. We have nothing

  649. to do with each other

  650. so let's leave

  651. each other alone.

  652. Second

  653. the demons

  654. get more specific

  655. and they say

  656. I beg you

  657. do not torment me.

  658. So they fear

  659. some kind of torment

  660. something that Jesus

  661. can do to them

  662. and exactly

  663. what kind of torment

  664. is in view

  665. will be explained

  666. later in verse 31.

  667. So they were

  668. begging Jesus

  669. this way

  670. and the reason

  671. is given here

  672. for he had commanded

  673. the unclean spirit

  674. to come out of the man

  675. for many a time

  676. it had seized him

  677. he was kept under guard

  678. and bound with chains

  679. and shackles

  680. but he would break the bonds

  681. and be driven by the demon

  682. into the desert.

  683. So Jesus

  684. had commanded

  685. the unclean spirit

  686. to come out of the man

  687. which suggests

  688. that the demon

  689. was inside the man

  690. and the demon

  691. was begging Jesus

  692. not to torment him

  693. after he comes out.

  694. So Luke gives us

  695. further details

  696. in verses 30 to 31

  697. but before he does that

  698. just

  699. just

  700. for a moment

  701. he tells us

  702. how unmanageable

  703. this demoniac

  704. really was.

  705. The demon

  706. it seems

  707. there were cycles

  708. of possessions

  709. he took over

  710. this man's life

  711. on many occasions

  712. and even though

  713. people tried to

  714. restrain him

  715. with shackles

  716. chains

  717. literally

  718. they tried to

  719. tame him

  720. put him under guard

  721. they put guards

  722. on him

  723. yet this man

  724. with some kind

  725. of superhuman strength

  726. probably demonic

  727. would break the bonds

  728. and be driven

  729. by the demon

  730. into the desert.

  731. this man

  732. was uncontrollable

  733. because he was

  734. controlled by a demon

  735. but Jesus does

  736. hear what was

  737. previously

  738. unimaginable

  739. he holds

  740. a seemingly

  741. sane conversation

  742. with this man

  743. or rather

  744. with the demons

  745. controlling the man

  746. it says in verse 30

  747. Jesus then asked him

  748. what is your name?

  749. some people

  750. make much

  751. of this

  752. dialogue

  753. people who are

  754. I think

  755. maybe a little bit

  756. too fascinated

  757. with demons

  758. and exercising demons

  759. they say

  760. this is the process

  761. you're supposed

  762. to name them first

  763. and then you can

  764. control them

  765. that's not

  766. what this is about

  767. at all

  768. there are many

  769. occasions when

  770. Jesus simply

  771. expels demons

  772. without naming

  773. them at all

  774. that's not what's

  775. going on here

  776. but it does show

  777. Jesus' power

  778. and his complete

  779. peace and control

  780. over this situation

  781. you think

  782. when you're faced

  783. with such a

  784. terrifying human

  785. being

  786. you immediately

  787. try to do

  788. something

  789. but here

  790. Jesus has no

  791. he's not in a

  792. hurry

  793. he's not fearful

  794. what is your name?

  795. and he says

  796. legion

  797. for many demons

  798. had entered him

  799. the word legion

  800. comes from the

  801. Latin word

  802. for a military

  803. unit made up

  804. of a thousand

  805. soldiers

  806. we don't know

  807. if that's literal

  808. here

  809. that this is

  810. literally a

  811. thousand demons

  812. but there's

  813. definitely a lot

  814. of demons

  815. and this name

  816. introduces the

  817. element of

  818. spiritual warfare

  819. what's happening

  820. here

  821. what we're

  822. viewing right

  823. now is a

  824. form of

  825. spiritual warfare

  826. here is literally

  827. an army

  828. a thousand unit

  829. legion

  830. army of

  831. demons

  832. and here's

  833. Jesus

  834. our champion

  835. and you

  836. would expect

  837. an epic battle

  838. but there's

  839. no fight

  840. only a brief

  841. discussion

  842. of the

  843. terms of

  844. surrender

  845. demon says

  846. in verse

  847. 28

  848. he said

  849. in 28

  850. I beg you

  851. do not

  852. torment me

  853. he now

  854. elaborates

  855. in verse

  856. 31

  857. they begged

  858. him not

  859. to command

  860. them to

  861. depart

  862. into

  863. the

  864. abyss

  865. so the

  866. torment

  867. that they

  868. feared

  869. is some

  870. kind of

  871. confinement

  872. in what

  873. is called

  874. the abyss

  875. we don't

  876. know exactly

  877. what the

  878. abyss

  879. is

  880. but

  881. 2 Peter

    2 Peter 2:4

  882. chapter 2

  883. verse 4

  884. does mention

  885. a place

  886. called the

  887. chains of

  888. gloomy

  889. darkness

  890. where

  891. disobedient

  892. angels are

  893. kept until

  894. the final

  895. judgment

  896. it seems

  897. that that's

  898. maybe what

  899. the legion

  900. is fearing

  901. and seeking

  902. to avoid

  903. please don't

  904. send us

  905. to the

  906. abyss

  907. it's a

  908. remarkable

  909. display

  910. of Jesus

  911. power

  912. here is

  913. an army

  914. of demons

  915. and here's

  916. a demonic

  917. whom no

  918. man could

  919. control

  920. and here

  921. he is

  922. prostrate

  923. before Jesus

  924. begging him

  925. and verses

  926. 32 to

  927. 33

  928. continue the

  929. story

  930. now a

  931. large herd

  932. of pigs

  933. was feeding

  934. there on

  935. the hillside

  936. and they

  937. begged him

  938. to let

  939. them enter

  940. these

  941. so he

  942. gave them

  943. permission

  944. then the

  945. demons

  946. came out

  947. of the

  948. man

  949. and entered

  950. the pigs

  951. and the

  952. herd

  953. rushed

  954. down

  955. the

  956. steep

  957. banks

  958. into

  959. the

  960. lake

  961. and

  962. drowned

  963. anything's

  964. better than

  965. the abyss

  966. since Jesus

  967. will not let

  968. them indwell

  969. a man

  970. they will

  971. settle for

  972. indwelling

  973. animals

  974. and they

  975. begged Jesus

  976. for the

  977. permission

  978. to do

  979. so

  980. so and

  981. we're not

  982. told why

  983. Jesus gives

  984. them

  985. permission

  986. but the

  987. fact that

  988. Jesus is

  989. in the

  990. position of

  991. giving out

  992. these

  993. permission

  994. slips

  995. to these

  996. demon

  997. armies

  998. serves

  999. to reveal

  1000. Jesus

  1001. extent

  1002. the extent

  1003. of his

  1004. authority

  1005. these

  1006. powerful

  1007. demons

  1008. can't

  1009. even

  1010. enter

  1011. the

  1012. pigs

  1013. without

  1014. Jesus'

  1015. express

  1016. permission

  1017. so the

  1018. demons

  1019. enter the

  1020. pigs

  1021. and drive

  1022. them

  1023. down the

  1024. steep

  1025. bank

  1026. into

  1027. the

  1028. lake

  1029. and

  1030. some

  1031. people

  1032. get to

  1033. this

  1034. point

  1035. of the

  1036. story

  1037. and

  1038. they

  1039. think

  1040. poor

  1041. pigs

  1042. but that's

  1043. to miss

  1044. the point

  1045. of the

  1046. story

  1047. first

  1048. these

  1049. pigs

  1050. are a

  1051. visual

  1052. representation

  1053. of the

  1054. havoc

  1055. that the

  1056. demons

  1057. were wreaking

  1058. inside

  1059. the man

  1060. so our

  1061. first instinct

  1062. should be

  1063. praise

  1064. and rejoicing

  1065. at the

  1066. man's

  1067. deliverance

  1068. and not

  1069. lament

  1070. for the

  1071. pigs

  1072. God cares

  1073. about the

  1074. animals

  1075. yes

  1076. that much

  1077. is clear

  1078. from

  1079. Jonah

  1080. 411

  1081. when God

  1082. says that

  1083. the numerous

  1084. cattle in

  1085. the city

  1086. of Nineveh

  1087. is one of

  1088. the reasons

  1089. why he

  1090. didn't want

  1091. to destroy

  1092. it in the

  1093. first place

  1094. he cares

  1095. about the

  1096. animals

  1097. but no

  1098. creature

  1099. in this

  1100. world

  1101. compares

  1102. to the

  1103. value

  1104. of a

  1105. human

  1106. being

  1107. created

  1108. in the

  1109. image

  1110. of God

  1111. there's

  1112. no question

  1113. what's

  1114. more

  1115. important

  1116. no

  1117. hesitation

  1118. second

  1119. these

  1120. pigs

  1121. are in

  1122. a

  1123. Gentile

  1124. region

  1125. Jews

  1126. wouldn't

  1127. even

  1128. keep

  1129. them

  1130. so

  1131. presumably

  1132. they're

  1133. being

  1134. raised

  1135. for human

  1136. consumption

  1137. anyway

  1138. they just

  1139. died a

  1140. little

  1141. early

  1142. the humans

  1143. get

  1144. they miss

  1145. out

  1146. and the

  1147. third

  1148. thing

  1149. is that

  1150. Luke

  1151. is making

  1152. a larger

  1153. narrative

  1154. point

  1155. since the

  1156. Old Testament

  1157. scriptures

  1158. categorize

  1159. pigs

  1160. also as

  1161. ritually

  1162. unclean

  1163. and therefore

  1164. unfit

  1165. for Jews

  1166. to consume

  1167. the biblical

  1168. reason for

  1169. this is

  1170. given in

  1171. Leviticus

  1172. 11

  1173. 7

  1174. and the

  1175. pig

  1176. because it

  1177. parts the

  1178. hoof

  1179. and is

  1180. cloven

  1181. footed

  1182. but does

  1183. not

  1184. chew

  1185. the

  1186. cud

  1187. is

  1188. unclean

  1189. to

  1190. you

  1191. that's

  1192. not the

  1193. reason why

  1194. we normally

  1195. think of

  1196. them as

  1197. unclean

  1198. right

  1199. pigs still

  1200. have the

  1201. reputation

  1202. of being

  1203. unclean

  1204. nowadays

  1205. and that's

  1206. because they

  1207. don't really

  1208. sweat

  1209. so they

  1210. need to

  1211. cool their

  1212. body down

  1213. by regulating

  1214. temperature

  1215. by wallowing

  1216. basically taking

  1217. mud baths

  1218. so we think

  1219. that they're

  1220. unclean

  1221. because of

  1222. it

  1223. but apparently

  1224. as I was

  1225. doing some

  1226. research about

  1227. this

  1228. they're one

  1229. of the

  1230. cleanest

  1231. animals

  1232. around

  1233. unlike dogs

  1234. and cats

  1235. that like to

  1236. pee and poop

  1237. in their living

  1238. quarters and

  1239. eating quarters

  1240. actually pigs

  1241. will refuse to

  1242. do that

  1243. unless they

  1244. have to

  1245. and so

  1246. pigs are

  1247. apparently clean

  1248. animals in that

  1249. sense

  1250. hygienically clean

  1251. but they're

  1252. ritually unclean

  1253. and that's the

  1254. larger point

  1255. and why are they

  1256. ritually unclean

  1257. and the reason is

  1258. kind of puzzling

  1259. right

  1260. Leviticus 11

  1261. said because

  1262. they part the

  1263. hoof but it's

  1264. cloven footed

  1265. and does not

  1266. chew the

  1267. cud

  1268. and the reason

  1269. is this

  1270. it's that

  1271. they are

  1272. a deviation

  1273. from God's

  1274. creative design

  1275. animals that

  1276. have parted

  1277. who were

  1278. supposed to

  1279. chew the

  1280. cud

  1281. that's the

  1282. type of

  1283. animal

  1284. the category

  1285. that they

  1286. belong to

  1287. and because

  1288. it's a

  1289. hybrid of

  1290. that

  1291. it represents

  1292. a deviation

  1293. of God's

  1294. creation

  1295. design

  1296. and of

  1297. course

  1298. this is

  1299. intended to

  1300. teach a

  1301. larger lesson

  1302. for the

  1303. people of

  1304. God

  1305. the Jews

  1306. he's teaching

  1307. them that

  1308. as a

  1309. chosen

  1310. people of

  1311. God

  1312. that you

  1313. ought to

  1314. be set

  1315. apart

  1316. and you

  1317. ought to

  1318. be clean

  1319. and you

  1320. ought to

  1321. live in a

  1322. manner that's

  1323. consistent with

  1324. God's

  1325. creative design

  1326. unlike these

  1327. Gentiles

  1328. unlike the

  1329. rest of the

  1330. nations

  1331. and that's

  1332. the lesson

  1333. that these

  1334. dietary

  1335. restrictions

  1336. convey

  1337. these are

  1338. unclean

  1339. they're not

  1340. consistent with

  1341. the creative

  1342. design of

  1343. God

  1344. so Luke is

  1345. making a

  1346. larger point

  1347. that it's

  1348. and it's

  1349. no accident

  1350. that Jesus

  1351. enters a

  1352. Gentile

  1353. region

  1354. encounters a

  1355. demoniac

  1356. who lives

  1357. among the

  1358. tombs

  1359. which is

  1360. unclean

  1361. who is

  1362. possessed

  1363. by an

  1364. unclean

  1365. spirit

  1366. expressly

  1367. described that

  1368. way in

  1369. verse 29

  1370. and so

  1371. that they

  1372. and expels

  1373. them to

  1374. enter the

  1375. unclean

  1376. pigs

  1377. when they

  1378. go off the

  1379. cliff

  1380. and they

  1381. die

  1382. Jesus

  1383. is driving

  1384. out

  1385. uncleanness

  1386. from

  1387. this

  1388. Gentile

  1389. region

  1390. he is

  1391. bringing

  1392. even

  1393. the

  1394. Gentiles

  1395. from

  1396. the

  1397. nations

  1398. into

  1399. God's

  1400. glorious

  1401. salvation

  1402. plan

  1403. this

  1404. point

  1405. is

  1406. emphasized

  1407. over and

  1408. over again

  1409. in the

  1410. gospel of

  1411. Luke

  1412. Ephesians

  1413. 2

  1414. 11 to

  1415. 13

  1416. 11 to

  1417. 16

  1418. rather

  1419. puts it

  1420. this

  1421. way

  1422. therefore

  1423. remember

  1424. that at

  1425. one time

  1426. you

  1427. Gentiles

  1428. in the

  1429. flesh

  1430. called

  1431. the

  1432. uncircumcision

  1433. by what

  1434. is called

  1435. the

  1436. circumcision

  1437. which is

  1438. made in

  1439. the flesh

  1440. by hands

  1441. remember

  1442. that you

  1443. were at

  1444. that time

  1445. separated

  1446. from

  1447. Christ

  1448. alienated

  1449. from the

  1450. commonwealth

  1451. of Israel

  1452. and strangers

  1453. to the

  1454. covenants

  1455. of promise

  1456. having no

  1457. hope

  1458. and without

  1459. God

  1460. in the

  1461. world

  1462. but now

  1463. in

  1464. Christ

  1465. Jesus

  1466. you

  1467. who

  1468. once

  1469. were

  1470. far

  1471. off

  1472. have

  1473. been

  1474. brought

  1475. near

  1476. by

  1477. the

  1478. blood

  1479. of

  1480. Christ

  1481. for

  1482. he

  1483. himself

  1484. is

  1485. our

  1486. peace

  1487. who

  1488. has

  1489. made

  1490. us

  1491. both

  1492. one

  1493. and

  1494. has

  1495. broken

  1496. down

  1497. in

  1498. his

  1499. flesh

  1500. the

  1501. dividing

  1502. wall

  1503. of

  1504. hostility

  1505. by

  1506. abolishing

  1507. the

  1508. law

  1509. of

  1510. commandments

  1511. expressed

  1512. in

  1513. ordinances

  1514. that

  1515. he

  1516. might

  1517. create

  1518. in

  1519. himself

  1520. one

  1521. new

  1522. man

  1523. in

  1524. place

  1525. of

  1526. the

  1527. two

  1528. so

  1529. making

  1530. peace

  1531. and

  1532. might

  1533. reconcile

  1534. us

  1535. both

  1536. to

  1537. the

  1538. Jews

  1539. had

  1540. broken

  1541. their

  1542. covenant

  1543. with

  1544. God

  1545. and

  1546. the

  1547. Gentiles

  1548. were

  1549. excluded

  1550. from

  1551. this

  1552. covenant

  1553. with

  1554. God

  1555. and

  1556. both

  1557. were

  1558. alienated

  1559. from

  1560. God

  1561. separated

  1562. from

  1563. him

  1564. because

  1565. of

  1566. their

  1567. sins

  1568. and

  1569. excluded

  1570. from

  1571. the

  1572. kingdom

  1573. of

  1574. God

  1575. but

  1576. Jesus

  1577. Christ

  1578. reconciles

  1579. them

  1580. both

  1581. by

  1582. reconciling

  1583. them

  1584. to

  1585. God

  1586. so

  1587. that

  1588. in

  1589. him

  1590. they

  1591. are

  1592. brought

  1593. together

  1594. as

  1595. one

  1596. new

  1597. humanity

  1598. and

  1599. citizens

  1600. of the

  1601. kingdom

  1602. of

  1603. God

  1604. Jesus

  1605. does

  1606. this

  1607. by

  1608. dying

  1609. on

  1610. the

  1611. cross

  1612. for

  1613. our

  1614. sins

  1615. as

  1616. the

  1617. atoning

  1618. sacrifice

  1619. and

  1620. he

  1621. fulfills

  1622. the

  1623. entire

  1624. requirement

  1625. all the

  1626. requirements

  1627. of the

  1628. law

  1629. by

  1630. doing

  1631. that

  1632. his

  1633. blood

  1634. becomes

  1635. the

  1636. agent

  1637. of

  1638. our

  1639. cleansing

  1640. so

  1641. that

  1642. all

  1643. those

  1644. who

  1645. acknowledge

  1646. their

  1647. sinfulness

  1648. and

  1649. humbly

  1650. come

  1651. to

  1652. him

  1653. and

  1654. entrust

  1655. themselves

  1656. to

  1657. Jesus

  1658. for

  1659. salvation

  1660. are

  1661. cleansed

  1662. of

  1663. their

  1664. sins

  1665. and

  1666. reconciled

  1667. to

  1668. God

  1669. have

  1670. peace

  1671. with

  1672. God

  1673. that's

  1674. what

  1675. we

  1676. do

  1677. when

  1678. that's

  1679. what

  1680. we

  1681. practice

  1682. and

  1683. express

  1684. when

  1685. we

  1686. observe

  1687. passing

  1688. of

  1689. the

  1690. peace

  1691. as

  1692. a

  1693. part

  1694. of

  1695. our

  1696. service

  1697. we

  1698. have

  1699. peace

  1700. with

  1701. each

  1702. other

  1703. only

  1704. because

  1705. that

  1706. hostility

  1707. the

  1708. dividing

  1709. wall

  1710. has

  1711. been

  1712. broken

  1713. down

  1714. because

  1715. of

  1716. our

  1717. union

  1718. with

  1719. Christ

  1720. our

  1721. reconciliation

  1722. with

  1723. God

  1724. we're

  1725. now

  1726. common

  1727. citizens

  1728. in the

  1729. kingdom

  1730. of

  1731. God

  1732. when

  1733. the

  1734. Nazis

  1735. invaded

  1736. France

  1737. in order

  1738. to

  1739. appease

  1740. Hitler

  1741. the

  1742. Portuguese

  1743. dictator

  1744. Antonio

  1745. de

  1746. Oliveira

  1747. Salazar

  1748. issued a

  1749. decree

  1750. that

  1751. no

  1752. Jew

  1753. is to be

  1754. granted passage

  1755. to

  1756. Portugal

  1757. even if they were

  1758. fleeing from

  1759. the Nazis

  1760. but

  1761. Aristides

  1762. de

  1763. Souza

  1764. Mendez

  1765. I don't

  1766. know if

  1767. you guys

  1768. have

  1769. heard

  1770. the

  1771. name

  1772. there's

  1773. a

  1774. big

  1775. Portuguese

  1776. population

  1777. here

  1778. so

  1779. he's

  1780. kind

  1781. of

  1782. like

  1783. a

  1784. folk

  1785. hero

  1786. here

  1787. but

  1788. he

  1789. was

  1790. a

  1791. Portuguese

  1792. consul

  1793. at the

  1794. time

  1795. this

  1796. decree

  1797. went

  1798. out

  1799. in

  1800. the

  1801. country

  1802. of

  1803. Portugal

  1804. and

  1805. he

  1806. made

  1807. this

  1808. announcement

  1809. to

  1810. his

  1811. staff

  1812. I

  1813. cannot

  1814. allow

  1815. all

  1816. you

  1817. people

  1818. to

  1819. die

  1820. many

  1821. of you

  1822. are

  1823. Jews

  1824. and

  1825. our

  1826. constitution

  1827. clearly

  1828. states

  1829. that

  1830. neither

  1831. the

  1832. religion

  1833. nor

  1834. the

  1835. political

  1836. beliefs

  1837. of

  1838. foreigners

  1839. can

  1840. be

  1841. used

  1842. as

  1843. a

  1844. pretext

  1845. for

  1846. refusing

  1847. to

  1848. allow

  1849. them

  1850. to

  1851. stay

  1852. in

  1853. Portugal

  1854. I've

  1855. decided

  1856. to be

  1857. faithful

  1858. to

  1859. that

  1860. principle

  1861. but

  1862. I

  1863. shall

  1864. resign

  1865. for

  1866. all

  1867. that

  1868. the

  1869. only

  1870. way

  1871. I

  1872. can

  1873. respect

  1874. my

  1875. faith

  1876. as

  1877. a

  1878. Christian

  1879. is

  1880. to

  1881. act

  1882. in

  1883. accordance

  1884. with

  1885. the

  1886. dictates

  1887. of

  1888. my

  1889. conscience

  1890. so

  1891. he

  1892. stayed

  1893. in

  1894. his

  1895. post

  1896. and

  1897. he

  1898. issued

  1899. approximately

  1900. 30,000

  1901. visas

  1902. to

  1903. Jews

  1904. and

  1905. other

  1906. stateless

  1907. refugees

  1908. what

  1909. Jesus

  1910. did

  1911. for

  1912. us

  1913. as

  1914. our

  1915. mediator

  1916. is

  1917. far

  1918. greater

  1919. than

  1920. what

  1921. he

  1922. did

  1923. what

  1924. that

  1925. man

  1926. did

  1927. for

  1928. the

  1929. Jews

  1930. we

  1931. were

  1932. not

  1933. only

  1934. aliens

  1935. but

  1936. we

  1937. were

  1938. rebels

  1939. undeserving

  1940. of

  1941. access

  1942. into

  1943. the

  1944. kingdom

  1945. of

  1946. God

  1947. we

  1948. were

  1949. facing

  1950. imminent

  1951. death

  1952. and

  1953. not

  1954. only

  1955. physical

  1956. death

  1957. but

  1958. eternal

  1959. spiritual

  1960. death

  1961. because

  1962. of

  1963. our

  1964. sins

  1965. but

  1966. Jesus

  1967. grants

  1968. us

  1969. passage

  1970. he

  1971. signs

  1972. our

  1973. papers

  1974. with

  1975. his

  1976. blood

  1977. he

  1978. reconciles

  1979. us

  1980. to

  1981. God

  1982. the

  1983. father

  1984. and

  1985. makes

  1986. us

  1987. citizens

  1988. in

  1989. the

  1990. kingdom

  1991. of

  1992. God

  1993. that's

  1994. what

  1995. we

  1996. call

  1997. the

  1998. gospel

  1999. the

  2000. good

  2001. news

  2002. of

  2003. Jesus

  2004. Christ

  2005. we

  2006. have

  2007. a

  2008. mediator

  2009. in

  2010. the

  2011. consulate

  2012. of

  2013. the

  2014. kingdom

  2015. of

  2016. God

  2017. have

  2018. you

  2019. heard

  2020. of

  2021. him

  2022. if

  2023. you

  2024. turn

  2025. to

  2026. him

  2027. in

  2028. faith

  2029. he

  2030. will

  2031. surely

  2032. save

  2033. one

  2034. of my

  2035. favorite

  2036. hymns

  2037. is

  2038. how firm

  2039. a

  2040. foundation

  2041. and

  2042. its

  2043. last

  2044. verse

  2045. says

  2046. this

  2047. the

  2048. soul

  2049. that

  2050. on

  2051. Jesus

  2052. has

  2053. leaned

  2054. for

  2055. repose

  2056. I

  2057. will

  2058. not

  2059. I

  2060. will

  2061. not

  2062. desert

  2063. to

  2064. his

  2065. foes

  2066. that

  2067. soul

  2068. though

  2069. all

  2070. hell

  2071. should

  2072. endeavor

  2073. to

  2074. shake

  2075. I'll

  2076. never

  2077. no

  2078. never

  2079. no

  2080. never

  2081. forsake

  2082. I'll

  2083. never

  2084. no

  2085. never

  2086. no

  2087. never

  2088. forsake

  2089. that's

  2090. our

  2091. Lord

  2092. our

  2093. Savior

  2094. Jesus

  2095. Christ

  2096. after

  2097. the

  2098. herd

  2099. of

  2100. pigs

  2101. drown

  2102. the

  2103. episode

  2104. causes

  2105. a

  2106. stir

  2107. and

  2108. the

  2109. news

  2110. of

  2111. Jesus

  2112. what

  2113. he

  2114. did

  2115. to

  2116. this

  2117. crazy

  2118. man

  2119. spreads

  2120. in the

  2121. city

  2122. and

  2123. the

  2124. country

  2125. so that

  2126. some

  2127. people

  2128. journey

  2129. to

  2130. the

  2131. country

  2132. of

  2133. the

  2134. garrisons

  2135. to see

  2136. for

  2137. themselves

  2138. and it

  2139. says in

  2140. verse 35

  2141. that they

  2142. came to

  2143. Jesus

  2144. and found

  2145. the man

  2146. from whom

  2147. the demons

  2148. had gone

  2149. sitting at

  2150. the feet

  2151. of Jesus

  2152. clothed

  2153. and in

  2154. his right

  2155. mind

  2156. and they

  2157. were afraid

  2158. so this

  2159. is a picture

  2160. of the

  2161. man's

  2162. full

  2163. restoration

  2164. before

  2165. the demons

  2166. were inside

  2167. the man

  2168. now they

  2169. had gone

  2170. before

  2171. the man

  2172. had worn

  2173. no clothes

  2174. but now

  2175. he is

  2176. clothed

  2177. and before

  2178. the man

  2179. was out of

  2180. his mind

  2181. and crying

  2182. out in

  2183. a loud

  2184. voice

  2185. like a

  2186. man

  2187. that he

  2188. was

  2189. but now

  2190. he is

  2191. in his

  2192. right

  2193. mind

  2194. before

  2195. he was

  2196. roaming

  2197. among

  2198. the

  2199. tombs

  2200. and was

  2201. driven

  2202. to

  2203. the

  2204. desert

  2205. by the

  2206. demons

  2207. and no

  2208. one

  2209. was able

  2210. to

  2211. restrain

  2212. him

  2213. but now

  2214. he is

  2215. sitting

  2216. at the

  2217. feet

  2218. of

  2219. Jesus

  2220. voluntarily

  2221. the phrase

  2222. sitting at

  2223. the feet

  2224. implies

  2225. discipleship

  2226. as the

  2227. request

  2228. that he

  2229. brings

  2230. that he

  2231. may be

  2232. with

  2233. Jesus

  2234. those are

  2235. both

  2236. languages

  2237. of

  2238. discipleship

  2239. that's

  2240. where the

  2241. pupils sit

  2242. when they're

  2243. with their

  2244. teachers

  2245. at the

  2246. feet

  2247. of the

  2248. teachers

  2249. that's

  2250. the technical

  2251. way of

  2252. describing

  2253. their

  2254. relationship

  2255. so before

  2256. this man

  2257. wanted nothing

  2258. to do

  2259. with Jesus

  2260. but now

  2261. he is

  2262. submitted

  2263. to Jesus

  2264. and receiving

  2265. instruction

  2266. from him

  2267. and

  2268. verses

  2269. 37

  2270. to 39

  2271. contrast

  2272. the

  2273. response

  2274. of this

  2275. cured

  2276. demoniac

  2277. from that

  2278. of the

  2279. other

  2280. witnesses

  2281. please

  2282. read

  2283. again

  2284. with me

  2285. 37

  2286. to 39

  2287. then

  2288. all

  2289. the

  2290. people

  2291. of the

  2292. surrounding

  2293. country

  2294. of the

  2295. garrisones

  2296. asked him

  2297. to depart

  2298. from them

  2299. for they

  2300. were seized

  2301. with great

  2302. fear

  2303. so he

  2304. got into

  2305. the boat

  2306. and returned

  2307. the man

  2308. from whom

  2309. the demons

  2310. had gone

  2311. begged

  2312. that he

  2313. might be

  2314. with him

  2315. but Jesus

  2316. sent him

  2317. away

  2318. saying

  2319. return

  2320. to your

  2321. home

  2322. and declare

  2323. how much

  2324. God has

  2325. done

  2326. for you

  2327. and he

  2328. went away

  2329. proclaiming

  2330. throughout the

  2331. whole city

  2332. how much

  2333. Jesus

  2334. had done

  2335. for him

  2336. there's a

  2337. theme

  2338. a running

  2339. theme

  2340. of fear

  2341. in this

  2342. entire

  2343. passage

  2344. verse 25

  2345. said that

  2346. after Jesus

  2347. calmed the

  2348. storm

  2349. the disciples

  2350. were afraid

  2351. verse 35

  2352. says that

  2353. after seeing

  2354. the demoniac

  2355. healed

  2356. and in his

  2357. right mind

  2358. the people

  2359. were afraid

  2360. and now

  2361. here again

  2362. it says

  2363. in verse 37

  2364. that they

  2365. were seized

  2366. with great

  2367. fear

  2368. when you

  2369. encounter

  2370. power of

  2371. this

  2372. magnitude

  2373. when you

  2374. find yourself

  2375. in the

  2376. presence

  2377. of a

  2378. divine

  2379. representative

  2380. that is

  2381. the only

  2382. proper

  2383. response

  2384. of a

  2385. weak

  2386. human

  2387. being

  2388. unless

  2389. you have

  2390. faith

  2391. unless

  2392. you have

  2393. reason

  2394. to approach

  2395. him

  2396. with boldness

  2397. so the

  2398. people in

  2399. the city

  2400. ask Jesus

  2401. to leave

  2402. because they're

  2403. afraid of

  2404. Jesus

  2405. and what

  2406. he is

  2407. capable

  2408. of doing

  2409. and what

  2410. that implies

  2411. for them

  2412. if this

  2413. is who

  2414. Jesus

  2415. really

  2416. is

  2417. what

  2418. does

  2419. that

  2420. mean

  2421. for

  2422. me

  2423. obviously

  2424. they can't

  2425. live the

  2426. same way

  2427. anymore

  2428. I wonder

  2429. if any

  2430. of you

  2431. are afraid

  2432. of Jesus

  2433. if Jesus

  2434. really is

  2435. God

  2436. then he

  2437. demands

  2438. your

  2439. allegiance

  2440. your life

  2441. will never

  2442. be the

  2443. same

  2444. again

  2445. are you

  2446. afraid

  2447. of the

  2448. radical

  2449. change

  2450. in lifestyle

  2451. that Jesus

  2452. demands

  2453. of you

  2454. are you

  2455. afraid

  2456. of what

  2457. you might

  2458. lose

  2459. are you

  2460. afraid

  2461. what he

  2462. might say

  2463. to you

  2464. these

  2465. men

  2466. lost

  2467. a herd

  2468. of pigs

  2469. maybe

  2470. you lose

  2471. your worldly

  2472. preoccupations

  2473. your selfish

  2474. ambitions

  2475. but Jesus

  2476. has come

  2477. into

  2478. your

  2479. garrison

  2480. country

  2481. and he

  2482. is bringing

  2483. cleansing

  2484. forgiveness

  2485. and healing

  2486. and will you

  2487. now refuse

  2488. him

  2489. in contrast

  2490. to these

  2491. fearful

  2492. people

  2493. the healed

  2494. man

  2495. wants to

  2496. follow

  2497. Jesus

  2498. on his

  2499. journey

  2500. as a

  2501. disciple

  2502. because

  2503. he

  2504. has

  2505. experienced

  2506. Jesus

  2507. saving

  2508. power

  2509. but

  2510. interestingly

  2511. Jesus

  2512. denies

  2513. the man's

  2514. request

  2515. and sends

  2516. him away

  2517. saying

  2518. return

  2519. to your

  2520. home

  2521. and declare

  2522. how much

  2523. God

  2524. has done

  2525. for you

  2526. sometimes

  2527. God

  2528. tells us

  2529. no

  2530. when we

  2531. ask

  2532. for good

  2533. things

  2534. because

  2535. he

  2536. has

  2537. in mind

  2538. things

  2539. that are

  2540. better

  2541. and in

  2542. this

  2543. case

  2544. the

  2545. garrison

  2546. demoniac

  2547. becomes

  2548. the first

  2549. gentile

  2550. missionary

  2551. to this

  2552. country

  2553. that would

  2554. otherwise

  2555. have no

  2556. witness

  2557. for the

  2558. gospel

  2559. of Jesus

  2560. Christ

  2561. he's

  2562. entrusted

  2563. with

  2564. taking

  2565. the

  2566. good

  2567. news

  2568. of

  2569. Jesus

  2570. Christ

  2571. to

  2572. his

  2573. city

  2574. and

  2575. to

  2576. his

  2577. country

  2578. and

  2579. the

  2580. man

  2581. does

  2582. exactly

  2583. this

  2584. it says

  2585. he was

  2586. proclaiming

  2587. throughout

  2588. the whole

  2589. city

  2590. how much

  2591. Jesus

  2592. had done

  2593. for him

  2594. and the

  2595. word

  2596. proclaim

  2597. is the

  2598. technical

  2599. word

  2600. that

  2601. refers

  2602. to

  2603. the

  2604. proclaiming

  2605. the

  2606. preaching

  2607. of the

  2608. good

  2609. news

  2610. of

  2611. Jesus

  2612. Christ

  2613. it's

  2614. the

  2615. same

  2616. word

  2617. that

  2618. Jesus

  2619. used

  2620. earlier

  2621. in

  2622. chapter

  2623. four

  2624. to

  2625. refer

  2626. to

  2627. his

  2628. mission

  2629. he came

  2630. to

  2631. proclaim

  2632. the

  2633. year

  2634. of

  2635. the

  2636. Lord's

  2637. favor

  2638. and

  2639. this

  2640. is

  2641. not

  2642. only

  2643. the

  2644. task

  2645. of

  2646. vocational

  2647. preachers

  2648. it's

  2649. the

  2650. task

  2651. of

  2652. every

  2653. single

  2654. Christian

  2655. if

  2656. you're

  2657. a

  2658. disciple

  2659. of

  2660. Christ

  2661. you're

  2662. called

  2663. to

  2664. proclaim

  2665. the

  2666. good

  2667. news

  2668. of

  2669. Jesus

  2670. Christ

  2671. how

  2672. much

  2673. has

  2674. Jesus

  2675. done

  2676. for

  2677. you

  2678. the

  2679. demoniac

  2680. is

  2681. an

  2682. obviously

  2683. extreme

  2684. case

  2685. but

  2686. every

  2687. Christian

  2688. has

  2689. experienced

  2690. Jesus

  2691. saving

  2692. power

  2693. that's

  2694. why

  2695. verse

  2696. 36

  2697. is

  2698. those

  2699. who

  2700. have

  2701. seen

  2702. it

  2703. told

  2704. him

  2705. how

  2706. the

  2707. demon

  2708. possessed

  2709. man

  2710. had

  2711. been

  2712. healed

  2713. the

  2714. word

  2715. heal

  2716. is

  2717. literally

  2718. saved

  2719. it's

  2720. the

  2721. verbal

  2722. form

  2723. of

  2724. the

  2725. noun

  2726. salvation

  2727. this

  2728. demoniac

  2729. healing

  2730. from

  2731. his

  2732. demon

  2733. possession

  2734. is

  2735. a

  2736. picture

  2737. of

  2738. the

  2739. Christian

  2740. salvation

  2741. do

  2742. you

  2743. proclaim

  2744. to

  2745. all

  2746. those

  2747. around

  2748. you

  2749. how

  2750. much

  2751. Jesus

  2752. has

  2753. done

  2754. for

  2755. you

  2756. there's

  2757. an

  2758. interesting

  2759. and I

  2760. think

  2761. intentional

  2762. contrast

  2763. between

  2764. Jesus'

  2765. command

  2766. and the

  2767. demoniac's

  2768. obedience

  2769. in verse

  2770. 39

  2771. I hope

  2772. you noticed

  2773. it in the

  2774. scripture

  2775. reading

  2776. Jesus

  2777. tells him

  2778. to go

  2779. declare

  2780. how much

  2781. God

  2782. has

  2783. done

  2784. for

  2785. you

  2786. but

  2787. the

  2788. man

  2789. goes

  2790. proclaiming

  2791. how

  2792. much

  2793. Jesus

  2794. has

  2795. done

  2796. for

  2797. him

  2798. because

  2799. Luke

  2800. is

  2801. once

  2802. again

  2803. making

  2804. a

  2805. statement

  2806. about

  2807. Jesus'

  2808. identity

  2809. Jesus

  2810. is

  2811. God's

  2812. ultimate

  2813. the

  2814. final

  2815. agent

  2816. the

  2817. messenger

  2818. he

  2819. speaks

  2820. the

  2821. very

  2822. words

  2823. of

  2824. God

  2825. in

  2826. fact

  2827. Jesus

  2828. is

  2829. the

  2830. son

  2831. of

  2832. God

  2833. and

  2834. all

  2835. the

  2836. saving

  2837. works

  2838. of

  2839. God

  2840. the

  2841. father

  2842. are

  2843. carried

  2844. out

  2845. through

  2846. his

  2847. son

  2848. Jesus

  2849. Christ

  2850. how

  2851. much

  2852. has

  2853. Jesus

  2854. done

  2855. for

  2856. you

  2857. look

  2858. at

  2859. the

  2860. demoniac

  2861. radical

  2862. transformation

  2863. you

  2864. may

  2865. not

  2866. have

  2867. been

  2868. demon

  2869. possessed

  2870. but

  2871. everyone

  2872. at

  2873. one

  2874. point

  2875. was

  2876. ruled

  2877. by

  2878. Satan

  2879. Ephesians

    Ephesians 2:2

  2880. chapter

  2881. 2

  2882. verse

  2883. 2

  2884. teaches

  2885. that

  2886. all

  2887. unbelievers

  2888. knowingly

  2889. or not

  2890. follow

  2891. the prince

  2892. of the

  2893. power

  2894. of the

  2895. air

  2896. referring

  2897. to

  2898. Satan

  2899. who

  2900. rules

  2901. over

  2902. the

  2903. invisible

  2904. realm

  2905. of

  2906. evil

  2907. spirits

  2908. we

  2909. were

  2910. once

  2911. under

  2912. his

  2913. tyrannical

  2914. rule

  2915. we

  2916. were

  2917. opposed

  2918. to

  2919. God

  2920. and

  2921. his

  2922. will

  2923. for

  2924. our

  2925. lives

  2926. oppressed

  2927. by

  2928. the

  2929. legion

  2930. of

  2931. demons

  2932. but

  2933. God

  2934. sent

  2935. us

  2936. a

  2937. champion

  2938. he

  2939. sent

  2940. his

  2941. divine

  2942. warrior

  2943. he

  2944. sent

  2945. Christ

  2946. the

  2947. king

  2948. to

  2949. conquer

  2950. sin
