  1. Luke chapter 9, starting in verse 51, and I'll read all the way to chapter 10, verse 24.

    Luke 9 chapter mention

  2. When the days drew near for him to be taken up, he set his face to go to Jerusalem.

  3. And he sent messengers ahead of him who went and entered a village of the Samaritans to make preparations for him.

  4. But the people did not receive him because his face was set toward Jerusalem.

  5. And when his disciples, James and John, saw it, they said, Lord, do you want us to tell fire to come down from heaven and consume them?

  6. But he turned and rebuked them, and they went on to another village.

  7. As they were going along the road, someone said to him, I will follow you wherever you go.

  8. And Jesus said to him, foxes have holes and birds of the air have nests, but the Son of Man has nowhere to lay his head.

  9. To another he said, follow me.

  10. But he said, Lord, let me first go and bury my father.

  11. And Jesus said to him, leave the dead to bury their own dead.

  12. But as for you, go and proclaim the kingdom of God.

  13. Yet another said, I will follow you, Lord, but let me first say farewell to those in my home.

  14. Jesus said to him, no one who puts his hand to the plow and looks back is fit for the kingdom of God.

  15. After this, the Lord appointed 72 others and sent them on ahead of him, two by two, into every town and place where he himself was about to go.

  16. And he said to them, the harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few.

  17. Therefore, pray earnestly to the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into his harvest.

  18. Go your way.

  19. Behold, I am sending you out as lambs in the midst of wolves.

  20. Carry no money bag, no knapsack, no sandals and greet no one on the road.

  21. Whatever house you enter, first say, peace be to this house.

  22. And if a son of peace is there, your peace will rest upon him.

  23. But if not, it will return to you and remain in the same house, eating and drinking what they provide for the laborer deserves his wages.

  24. Do not go from house to house.

  25. Whenever you enter a town and they receive you, eat what is set before you.

  26. Heal the sick in it and say to them, the kingdom of God has come near to you.

  27. But whenever you enter a town and they do not receive you, go into its streets and say,

  28. even the dust of your town that clings to our feet, we wipe off against you.

  29. Nevertheless, know this, that the kingdom of God has come near.

  30. I tell you, it will be more bearable on that day for Sodom than for that town.

  31. Woe to you, Chorazin.

  32. Woe to you, Bethsaida.

  33. For if the mighty works done in you had been done in Tyre and Sidon,

  34. they would have repented long ago, sitting in sackcloth and ashes.

  35. But it will be more bearable in the judgment for Tyre and Sidon than for you.

  36. And you, Capernaum, will you be exalted to heaven?

  37. You shall be brought down to Hades.

  38. The one who hears you hears me.

  39. And the one who rejects you rejects me.

  40. And the one who rejects me rejects him who sent me.

  41. The 72 returned with joy, saying,

  42. Lord, even the demons are subject to us in your name.

  43. And he said to them,

  44. I saw Satan fall like lightning from heaven.

  45. Behold, I have given you authority to tread on serpents and scorpions

  46. and over all the power of the enemy, and nothing shall hurt you.

  47. Nevertheless, do not rejoice in this, that the spirits are subject to you,

  48. but rejoice that your names are written in heaven.

  49. In that same hour, he rejoiced in the Holy Spirit and said,

  50. I thank you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth,

  51. that you have hidden these things from the wise and understanding

  52. and revealed them to little children.

  53. Yes, Father, for such was your gracious will.

  54. All things have been handed over to me by my Father,

  55. and no one knows who the Son is except the Father,

  56. or who the Father is except the Son,

  57. and anyone to whom the Son chooses to reveal him.

  58. Then turning to the disciples, he said privately,

  59. Blessed are the eyes that see what you see.

  60. For I tell you that many prophets and kings desire to see what you see

  61. and did not see it,

  62. and to hear what you hear and did not hear it.

  63. This is the word of the Lord.

  64. Jesus revealed himself as the Messiah, as we saw,

  65. throughout chapter 9,

  66. and Peter made the momentous observation of profession

  67. that Jesus is the Christ of God,

  68. in chapter 9, verse 2.

  69. And in all three of the Synoptic Gospels,

  70. Matthew, Mark, and Luke,

  71. Peter's confession kind of is a pivot

  72. in which the narrative turns

  73. to Jesus' kind of unstoppable march toward the cross.

  74. That's why he says he set his face to go to Jerusalem.

  75. So he's about to go to die on the cross,

  76. to be raised from the dead,

  77. and to ascend to the right hand of the Father.

  78. That's where he is headed now.

  79. And coming to terms with the true messianic identity of Jesus

  80. forces us to make a difficult decision.

  81. Are we willing to follow such a Messiah?

  82. If Jesus really is a suffering Messiah,

  83. if Jesus really is going to the cross,

  84. and following him involves bearing our own cross,

  85. as Jesus taught us in chapter 9,

  86. then is it worth it?

  87. What does it mean to become a disciple of Jesus?

  88. And this passage seeks to answer those questions.

  89. And it does so in three parts.

  90. First, we see the price of discipleship.

  91. And then we see the proclamation of discipleship.

  92. And then lastly, we see the privilege of discipleship.

  93. First, let's look at the price of discipleship.

  94. After Jesus set his face to go to Jerusalem,

  95. it says in verses 52 to 53,

  96. that Jesus sent messengers ahead of him

  97. who went and entered the village of the Samaritans

  98. to make preparations for him.

  99. But the people did not receive him

  100. because his face was set toward Jerusalem.

  101. In the Greek, the phrase,

  102. sent messengers ahead of him,

  103. is literally sent messengers before his face.

  104. So there's actually a threefold repetition

  105. of the word face in these verses.

  106. Jesus set his face to go to Jerusalem

  107. and he sent messengers before his face.

  108. But the Samaritans rejected him

  109. because his face was set toward Jerusalem.

  110. And we know from the Gospel of John

  111. that there's some bad blood between Jews and Samaritans,

  112. which we'll see more closely in the next passage,

  113. next week.

  114. But here, Luke doesn't mention any of that.

  115. But I think there's a deeper reason for this conflict,

  116. the rejection of the Samaritans of Jesus and his disciples.

  117. And it's that Jesus' journey to Jerusalem

  118. is his journey to the cross, as he taught us.

  119. And when he set his face to go to Jerusalem,

  120. he was embracing all that is entailed

  121. in being the suffering Messiah

  122. who will die for the sins of God's people.

  123. And that radical redefinition

  124. of what it means to be the Christ,

  125. the king, the messianic king,

  126. was controversial not only among the Jews,

  127. but also among the Samaritans

  128. who were also waiting for a Messiah.

  129. And so he says in chapter 945

  130. that they didn't understand

  131. what Jesus was talking about.

  132. So he seems that that's what's going on here,

  133. that this is the price

  134. that the disciple of Christ also has to consider

  135. and pay.

  136. That the king that is rejected

  137. means his followers too will face rejection,

  138. and that's not a popular result.

  139. And so here, as Jesus is on his way,

  140. he's so determined to go through

  141. the territory of the Samaritans to Jerusalem,

  142. he faces rejection

  143. because of that determined course.

  144. Jesus was earlier rejected in Luke 8, 37

  145. among the Gentiles,

  146. those who were non-Jews.

  147. And now here he is rejected among the Samaritans

  148. who are like the half-Jews

  149. with mixed blood.

  150. And soon he will be rejected

  151. by the Jews themselves in Jerusalem.

  152. And that's the pattern,

  153. the kind of the trajectory

  154. of the Gospel of Luke.

  155. But the disciples don't take

  156. this rejection very well.

  157. They're the proud Jews,

  158. and these are the half-breed Samaritans.

  159. And yet they have the audacity

  160. to reject their Messiah.

  161. And so James and John,

  162. whom Jesus nicknamed

  163. the Sons of Thunder in Mark 3, 17,

  164. they react with appropriately

  165. thunderous indignation.

  166. In verse 54,

  167. And when his disciples,

  168. James and John,

  169. saw it,

  170. they said,

  171. Lord, do you want us to tell fire

  172. to come down from heaven

  173. and consume them?

  174. Seems a bit dramatic,

  175. but that's exactly what had happened

  176. to those who opposed Prophet Elijah

  177. in the Old Testament.

  178. Those soldiers that were sent

  179. to arrest him

  180. were consumed by fire.

  181. So they must have

  182. that precedent in mind

  183. as they suggest this.

  184. But Jesus rebukes them.

  185. He says,

  186. He turned and rebuked them,

  187. and they went on

  188. to another village.

  189. So it's not that Jesus

  190. is totally against

  191. any form of judgment.

  192. He himself will later

  193. speak of judgment

  194. in verses 10 to 16.

  195. But what he's teaching here

  196. is that he came

  197. in his first coming

  198. in grace

  199. to save his people.

  200. He has not come to judge.

  201. He will return

  202. in his second coming,

  203. in his glory to judge.

  204. But for the disciples

  205. who are ministering

  206. and living in between

  207. those two comings of Christ,

  208. they are not to retaliate,

  209. even in the face of rejection.

  210. And this is a helpful correction to us.

  211. We count it a virtue

  212. to be well-liked.

  213. We don't like to face rejection.

  214. But as our culture

  215. becomes increasingly post-Christian

  216. and moves on from its

  217. kind of Christian underpinnings,

  218. the saving message

  219. of Jesus Christ

  220. is going to be

  221. increasingly ridiculed

  222. and rejected.

  223. And so we shouldn't be surprised

  224. by the kind of

  225. the trials

  226. and suffering

  227. that we face

  228. as followers of Christ.

  229. That's the price

  230. of discipleship

  231. that Jesus is speaking of.

  232. He doesn't sugarcoat that.

  233. And as Jesus continues

  234. on his way to Jerusalem,

  235. he encounters

  236. three potential followers.

  237. And Jesus' conversation

  238. with them

  239. is very counterintuitive.

  240. Usually when you have

  241. potential followers,

  242. you want to win them over,

  243. lure them,

  244. show them why

  245. it would be worth it.

  246. But this is how

  247. he reacts to them.

  248. He says in verses 57 to 58,

  249. As they were going

  250. along the road,

  251. someone said to him,

  252. I will follow you

  253. wherever you go.

  254. And Jesus said to him,

  255. Foxes have holes

  256. and birds of the air

  257. have nests,

  258. but the Son of Man

  259. has nowhere to lay his head.

  260. He's expressing a desire

  261. to become a disciple of Jesus.

  262. That's what the language

  263. of following implies.

  264. And in the ancient

  265. Jewish context,

  266. the disciple would travel

  267. everywhere with their teacher

  268. and sit at their feet

  269. to learn the Jewish laws.

  270. But Jesus knows

  271. that following him

  272. involves much more

  273. than simply learning

  274. like a typical Jewish disciple.

  275. But it's a dangerous road.

  276. It's a costly road

  277. because the Son of Man

  278. has nowhere to lay his head.

  279. This is one of his favorite ways

  280. of referring to himself

  281. as the representative

  282. of humankind before God.

  283. And throughout his ministry,

  284. Jesus was a homeless teacher.

  285. He was at the mercy

  286. of the hospitality of others.

  287. And because he preaches

  288. a counterintuitive

  289. and countercultural message

  290. of the cross

  291. that he came to die

  292. as the king

  293. to pay the penalty

  294. for the sins of his people,

  295. the disciples also face

  296. suffering and rejection

  297. and they have to count the cost

  298. before they can follow him.

  299. Verses 59 to 60 continue.

  300. It gets even harsher seemingly.

  301. To another he said,

  302. follow me.

  303. But he said,

  304. Lord, let me first go

  305. and bury my father.

  306. And Jesus said to him,

  307. leave the dead

  308. to bury their own dead.

  309. But as for you,

  310. go and proclaim

  311. the kingdom of God.

  312. This is a shocking statement,

  313. right, to us.

  314. But it would have been

  315. even more shocking

  316. in the ancient world

  317. because there,

  318. arranging for the burial

  319. of your parents

  320. was considered

  321. a sacred duty.

  322. One of the most important duties

  323. within the family.

  324. In fact,

  325. even though coming into contact

  326. with the dead

  327. was ritually defiling

  328. in Judaism,

  329. the Old Testament scriptures

  330. made special exceptions

  331. when it came to

  332. burying your relatives.

  333. So it said in Leviticus 21,

  334. 1 to 3,

  335. no one shall make himself

  336. unclean for the dead

  337. among his people

  338. except for his closest relatives,

  339. his mother,

  340. his father,

  341. his son,

  342. his daughter,

  343. his brother,

  344. or his virgin sister

  345. who is near to him

  346. because she has had no husband.

  347. For her,

  348. he may make himself

  349. unclean.

  350. But Jesus tells this man

  351. to leave the dead,

  352. to bury their own dead.

  353. But as for you,

  354. go and proclaim

  355. the kingdom of God.

  356. Jesus is not teaching

  357. his followers

  358. to neglect their families.

  359. We know that

  360. because in 1 Timothy 5,

  361. 8,

  362. it says,

  363. but if anyone

  364. does not provide

  365. for his relatives

  366. and especially

  367. for members

  368. of his household,

  369. he has denied the faith

  370. and is worse

  371. than an unbeliever.

  372. So Jesus is not making

  373. a literal point here,

  374. but he's using

  375. a figurative language

  376. to establish

  377. a spiritual principle.

  378. And we know

  379. that this is figurative

  380. because dead people

  381. can't bury dead people.

  382. They're already dead.

  383. So Jesus is not referring

  384. to the physically dead,

  385. but he's referring

  386. to those who are

  387. spiritually dead.

  388. So in Luke 7,

  389. 11 to 17,

  390. if you guys remember,

  391. Jesus touched

  392. the funeral bear

  393. of the dead son

  394. of the widow of nine.

  395. And in Luke 8,

  396. 49 to 56,

  397. Jesus touched

  398. the dead daughter

  399. of Jairus.

  400. But in both of those cases,

  401. contrary to expectation,

  402. instead of Jesus

  403. being defiled

  404. by coming into contact

  405. with the dead,

  406. the dead were instead

  407. raised to new life.

  408. Jesus imparted life

  409. to them.

  410. And that's because

  411. Jesus,

  412. as he taught in John,

  413. that he said,

  414. I am the resurrection

  415. and the life.

  416. Whoever believes in me,

  417. though he die,

  418. yet shall he live.

  419. And everyone who lives

  420. and believes in me

  421. shall never die.

  422. So Jesus' kind of

  423. resuscitation of the dead

  424. in the Gospels

  425. functioned as a foretaste

  426. of the eternal resurrection life

  427. that he promises

  428. all of his followers.

  429. And that should inform

  430. how we interpret

  431. Jesus' command here.

  432. Leave the dead

  433. to bury their own dead,

  434. but as for you,

  435. go and proclaim

  436. the kingdom of God.

  437. That's what that means here.

  438. Even the spiritually dead

  439. can take care

  440. of their own parents.

  441. But only a Christian

  442. can proclaim

  443. the kingdom of God.

  444. So you must go do it.

  445. Even the spiritually dead

  446. can work hard

  447. to earn a living

  448. for their families.

  449. But only a Christian

  450. can proclaim

  451. the kingdom of God.

  452. God.

  453. So you must go do it.

  454. Even the spiritually dead

  455. can study hard

  456. to earn their degrees,

  457. win grants,

  458. and make breakthrough

  459. contributions

  460. in their academic disciplines

  461. and advance human knowledge.

  462. But only a Christian

  463. can proclaim

  464. the kingdom of God.

  465. This is not to belittle

  466. the activities

  467. and relationships

  468. that preoccupy

  469. our human lives,

  470. but simply to express

  471. the priority

  472. and necessity

  473. of proclaiming

  474. the kingdom of God.

  475. In short,

  476. what Jesus is saying here is

  477. there is no temporal duty

  478. that is so important

  479. that we should neglect

  480. or delay

  481. following Christ

  482. for it.

  483. Arranging for the care

  484. and burial

  485. of our aged parents

  486. is important.

  487. Schooling our children

  488. and taking them

  489. to music lessons

  490. and little league games

  491. are important.

  492. Alleviating poverty

  493. and abolishing

  494. human trafficking

  495. are important.

  496. But while we do

  497. all of these things,

  498. we must not forget

  499. the important truth

  500. that the world's

  501. greatest need

  502. and our unique ability

  503. as Christians

  504. meet in the proclamation

  505. of the kingdom of God.

  506. That's our unique

  507. responsibility

  508. and prerogative.

  509. This man had a very good,

  510. reasonable request

  511. to make of Jesus.

  512. He just wanted to

  513. honor his parents

  514. and give them

  515. a proper burial

  516. before he left

  517. to follow Jesus

  518. as a disciple.

  519. But Jesus says

  520. even that

  521. is an insufficient

  522. excuse

  523. for postponing

  524. Christian discipleship

  525. because an important

  526. thing must never

  527. take precedence

  528. over the ultimate thing.

  529. Because a good thing

  530. must never take precedence

  531. over the best thing.

  532. Some people say,

  533. well, after I have

  534. graduated from school

  535. and when I'm less busy,

  536. I will really follow Christ

  537. and serve Him.

  538. After I climb

  539. the corporate ladder

  540. to a point where

  541. I have built sufficient wealth

  542. and job security,

  543. then I will really

  544. follow Christ.

  545. After I'm married

  546. and have a family,

  547. I will really follow Christ

  548. and serve Him.

  549. After my kids

  550. are grown up,

  551. I will really then

  552. apply myself

  553. to following Christ.

  554. That's not how

  555. Christian discipleship works.

  556. That's what Jesus

  557. is saying.

  558. His command

  559. doesn't necessarily mean

  560. that all of us

  561. have to leave

  562. our day jobs

  563. and leave our families

  564. to move to a foreign country

  565. as a Christian missionary.

  566. It might mean that

  567. for some of us,

  568. but that's not what

  569. it necessarily means

  570. for all of us.

  571. But what it does mean

  572. is that all of our lives'

  573. purposes and priorities

  574. have to be radically

  575. reoriented with Christ

  576. as the center.

  577. Because following Christ

  578. subordinates

  579. and subsumes

  580. all of our other

  581. obligations.

  582. So then,

  583. are you faithfully involved

  584. in the worship

  585. and fellowship

  586. of the church?

  587. what are the relations

  588. and activities

  589. that you have allowed

  590. to push out

  591. your priority

  592. of following Christ

  593. and proclaiming

  594. the kingdom of God?

  595. Have you been sharing

  596. the good news

  597. of Jesus Christ

  598. with your friends

  599. and neighbors?

  600. Because you may be,

  601. very well be,

  602. the only Christian

  603. close enough

  604. to them to proclaim

  605. the kingdom of God.

  606. Do you realize

  607. that that's precisely

  608. where our unique ability

  609. as Christians

  610. and the world's

  611. most desperate need

  612. meet?

  613. That's what that means.

  614. Leave the dead

  615. to bury their own dead.

  616. But as for you,

  617. go and proclaim

  618. the kingdom of God.

  619. We encounter

  620. a third candidate

  621. in verses 61 to 62.

  622. Yet another said,

  623. I will follow you, Lord,

  624. but let me first

  625. say farewell

  626. to those at my home.

  627. Jesus said to him,

  628. no one who puts

  629. his hand to the plow

  630. and looks back

  631. is fit

  632. for the kingdom of God.

  633. This is an allusion

  634. to 1 Kings 19

    1 Kings 19:19–21

  635. verses 19 to 21.

  636. That's where

  637. prophet Elijah

  638. calls Elisha

  639. to become

  640. his disciple.

  641. It says,

  642. so Elisha,

  643. so he departed

  644. from there

  645. and found Elisha,

  646. the son of Shaphat,

  647. who was plowing

  648. with 12 yoke of oxen

  649. in front of him.

  650. And he was

  651. with the 12th.

  652. Elisha passed by him

  653. and cast his cloak

  654. upon him.

  655. And he left the oxen

  656. and ran after Elisha

  657. and said,

  658. let me kiss my father

  659. and my mother

  660. and then I will follow you.

  661. And he said to him,

  662. go back again

  663. for what have I done

  664. to you?

  665. And he returned

  666. from following him

  667. and took the yoke

  668. of oxen

  669. and sacrificed them

  670. and boiled their flesh

  671. with the yokes

  672. of the oxen

  673. and gave it to the people

  674. and they ate.

  675. Then he arose

  676. and went after Elisha

  677. and assisted him.

  678. So in this passage,

  679. Elisha

  680. literally looks back

  681. while he's plowing

  682. the field.

  683. But more importantly,

  684. he figuratively looks back

  685. from plowing the field.

  686. He's called

  687. to the prophetic ministry

  688. by Prophet Elijah.

  689. But he says

  690. he needs some time

  691. to put his former life

  692. in order.

  693. He's going to settle

  694. some accounts.

  695. He's going to sell

  696. all the things

  697. related to his day job,

  698. sell the oxen,

  699. get some money

  700. for his family.

  701. He's going to kiss

  702. his father and mother goodbye

  703. and then he joins him.

  704. And this was

  705. an urgent mission.

  706. They lived

  707. in a desperate time

  708. under the wicked king,

  709. Ahab.

  710. And yet,

  711. and Elijah was given

  712. a once-in-a-lifetime

  713. opportunity to follow

  714. one of the greatest

  715. prophets of old,

  716. Elijah.

  717. Yet even in that context,

  718. Elijah was given

  719. the freedom

  720. to return

  721. and to settle

  722. his accounts

  723. and to first say

  724. goodbye to his family.

  725. But Luke

  726. and Jesus here

  727. is intentionally

  728. drawing a contrast

  729. to convey

  730. the reality

  731. that following Christ

  732. is far more urgent

  733. than that.

  734. What Elisha

  735. had the luxury

  736. to do.

  737. The disciple of Christ

  738. does not have

  739. the luxury

  740. to do

  741. because it's a matter

  742. of eternal life.

  743. And like the two

  744. preceding cases,

  745. this case too

  746. is more illustrative

  747. than literal.

  748. What Jesus is saying

  749. is you cannot

  750. have split

  751. allegiances.

  752. You cannot follow

  753. after two things

  754. at once.

  755. The Israelites

  756. after their deliverance

  757. from their slavery

  758. in Egypt,

  759. after the Exodus,

  760. they looked back

  761. on their time

  762. of slavery

  763. and they said,

  764. well,

  765. maybe it would have

  766. been better there

  767. than being in the wilderness

  768. here in freedom.

  769. Lot's wife,

  770. if you guys remember,

  771. when she was rescued

  772. from Sodom

  773. as he was being destroyed,

  774. she looked back

  775. longingly

  776. at that city

  777. that was being destroyed

  778. and was turned

  779. into a pillar of salt.

  780. Jesus is issuing

  781. a warning

  782. that's similar.

  783. He's saying,

  784. don't look back

  785. at your former life.

  786. When you're called

  787. to Christ,

  788. don't look,

  789. don't be lured

  790. by the things

  791. of this world.

  792. Have no regrets

  793. about following Christ.

  794. Hold fast

  795. to your confession

  796. because no one

  797. who puts his hand

  798. to the plow

  799. and looks back

  800. is fit

  801. for the kingdom

  802. of God.

  803. When you're plowing

  804. a field

  805. with an ox,

  806. the goal

  807. is to plow

  808. a straight furrow

  809. and just

  810. a little distraction

  811. looking around

  812. and looking back

  813. could veer you

  814. off course.

  815. And because of that,

  816. in the ancient world,

  817. in a lot of ancient literature,

  818. that metaphor,

  819. that image

  820. of plowing a field

  821. was used

  822. to convey

  823. a sense of discipline

  824. and focus,

  825. a dedication,

  826. a single-minded dedication

  827. to a task.

  828. And that's what

  829. Jesus is calling

  830. Christian disciples

  831. to an unwavering

  832. discipline

  833. and a focus.

  834. And Jesus is not saying

  835. that if you ever falter

  836. in your faith

  837. and look back

  838. from following Christ

  839. that you will automatically

  840. be disqualified.

  841. He's gracious.

  842. Jesus later restores

  843. Apostle Peter

  844. even after he denies

  845. Jesus three times.

  846. But Jesus is saying

  847. that following Christ

  848. requires focus

  849. and dedication

  850. much like

  851. plowing a field.

  852. Following Christ

  853. is an all-consuming

  854. affair.

  855. It's not a side gig

  856. or a hobby.

  857. Following Christ

  858. should be

  859. our first love,

  860. should be

  861. our great purpose,

  862. our consuming passion,

  863. our life's work.

  864. Not just for ministers

  865. and missionaries

  866. but for every Christian.

  867. And following Christ,

  868. I admit

  869. and many of you

  870. can testify

  871. will often feel

  872. like an uphill climb.

  873. That's because

  874. we're fighting

  875. our sinful flesh.

  876. That's because

  877. we're going up

  878. against the currents

  879. of the sinful world.

  880. And as soon as

  881. you align yourself

  882. to Jesus Christ,

  883. you become

  884. the sworn enemy

  885. of Satan

  886. and his demonic minions

  887. because we're engaged

  888. in this cosmic

  889. spiritual warfare.

  890. And because of that,

  891. there will be

  892. hard days.

  893. There will be

  894. very hard days.

  895. And there will be

  896. suffering.

  897. And there will be

  898. temptations.

  899. And there will be

  900. persecutions.

  901. But don't

  902. look

  903. back.

  904. Keep your hands

  905. on the plow.

  906. Plow ahead.

  907. Keep going

  908. because your

  909. great reward,

  910. Jesus Christ

  911. himself,

  912. awaits you.

  913. we need to

  914. constantly

  915. encourage each

  916. other

  917. with this

  918. truth

  919. in this way.

  920. We're always

  921. being tempted

  922. to look back,

  923. to look around.

  924. But we need

  925. to call each

  926. other

  927. when our eyes

  928. begin to

  929. wander.

  930. Keep plowing.

  931. That's the

  932. price of

  933. discipleship.

  934. Nowadays,

  935. sometimes it

  936. feels like

  937. churches are

  938. in a mad

  939. dash to see

  940. how quickly

  941. they can

  942. lower the

  943. bar of

  944. Christian

  945. discipleship.

  946. you don't

  947. have enough

  948. people joining

  949. your church.

  950. Easy.

  951. Just lower

  952. the bar so

  953. less people

  954. are offended

  955. and more

  956. people are

  957. comfortable

  958. in the

  959. pews.

  960. You can

  961. be a church

  962. member without

  963. coming to the

  964. worship service

  965. regularly.

  966. You can be a

  967. Christian without

  968. believing what

  969. the Bible

  970. teaches.

  971. You can be a

  972. Christian without

  973. changing your

  974. lifestyle.

  975. You can be a

  976. Christian without

  977. renouncing your

  978. sins.

  979. You can be a

  980. Christian and

  981. still live for

  982. yourself.

  983. These are

  984. soul-destroying

  985. lies.

  986. Don't

  987. believe them.

  988. Jesus raises

  989. the bar

  990. impossibly high.

  991. Why?

  992. Because Christian

  993. discipleship is

  994. hard.

  995. And unless you

  996. set the bar

  997. high, people

  998. who climb

  999. over are not

  1000. going to make

  1001. it to the end

  1002. of the journey.

  1003. That's the

  1004. price of

  1005. discipleship.

  1006. And then in

  1007. verses 1 to

  1008. 16 of chapter

  1009. 10, we see the

  1010. proclamation of

  1011. discipleship.

  1012. He had sent

  1013. out 12

  1014. apostles earlier

  1015. in chapter

  1016. 9, but here

  1017. he sent 72

  1018. others and

  1019. sent them on

  1020. ahead of him

  1021. two by two

  1022. into every town

  1023. and place where

  1024. he himself is

  1025. about to go.

  1026. As you have

  1027. seen throughout

  1028. the Gospel of

  1029. Luke, numbers

  1030. are significant.

  1031. He sends

  1032. them two by

  1033. two so that

  1034. they can bear

  1035. a credible

  1036. witness to

  1037. whether or not

  1038. someone accepts

  1039. or rejects the

  1040. Gospel of

  1041. Jesus Christ.

  1042. That was the

  1043. standard given

  1044. in Deuteronomy

  1045. 19.15 for

  1046. establishing a

  1047. credible witness.

  1048. And that's

  1049. why in the

  1050. cases of

  1051. church discipline

  1052. and excommunication

  1053. you need two

  1054. or three

  1055. witnesses.

  1056. It has to

  1057. happen in

  1058. the context

  1059. of the

  1060. gathered

  1061. church, the

  1062. corporate

  1063. body.

  1064. 72 is also

  1065. significant.

  1066. Jesus chose

  1067. the 12 earlier

  1068. to represent

  1069. as an allusion

  1070. to the 12

  1071. tribes of

  1072. Israel to

  1073. signal the

  1074. fact that he

  1075. is reconstituting

  1076. God's people.

  1077. But now here

  1078. he picks 72

  1079. for this

  1080. reason because

  1081. in Genesis

  1082. 10,

  1083. chapter 10

  1084. verses 1 to

  1085. 31, it

  1086. begins this

  1087. way.

  1088. These are the

  1089. generations of

  1090. the sons of

  1091. Noah, Shem,

  1092. and Ham,

  1093. and Japheth.

  1094. Sons were

  1095. born to them

  1096. after the

  1097. flood.

  1098. So this is

  1099. kind of a

  1100. starting over

  1101. of the line

  1102. of humanity

  1103. after the

  1104. flood judgment.

  1105. And it

  1106. lists 72

  1107. names.

  1108. And it

  1109. says after

  1110. at the end,

  1111. these are the

  1112. sons of Shem

  1113. by their

  1114. clans,

  1115. their languages,

  1116. their lands,

  1117. and their

  1118. nations.

  1119. And from

  1120. these, the

  1121. nations spread

  1122. abroad on the

  1123. earth after the

  1124. flood.

  1125. That's what it

  1126. says in verse

  1127. 31.

  1128. And that's why

  1129. Genesis chapter

    Genesis 10 chapter mention

  1130. 10 is called

  1131. the table of

  1132. the nations.

  1133. And by sending

  1134. out 72

  1135. disciples,

  1136. Jesus is

  1137. signifying the

  1138. fact that

  1139. Christian mission

  1140. is not

  1141. restrictive,

  1142. it's not

  1143. merely to the

  1144. Jews, but

  1145. it's to all

  1146. national and

  1147. ethnic people

  1148. groups of

  1149. earth.

  1150. because our

  1151. God is not

  1152. a local

  1153. deity, he's

  1154. not a regional

  1155. deity, but he's

  1156. the God of all

  1157. creation, he's

  1158. the God over

  1159. all the

  1160. nations, and

  1161. so his

  1162. worship is due

  1163. from every

  1164. nation and

  1165. all tribes

  1166. and peoples

  1167. and tongues.

  1168. That's what

  1169. this is about.

  1170. It's the cosmic

  1171. mission that we

  1172. get to be a

  1173. part of.

  1174. Take a look

  1175. at this map

  1176. that I'm

  1177. projecting for you.

  1178. It's from a

  1179. book entitled

  1180. The Atlas of

  1181. Global

  1182. Christianity.

  1183. The colors

  1184. display the

  1185. percentage of

  1186. majority

  1187. religions.

  1188. Blue is

  1189. Christianity,

  1190. green

  1191. concentrated

  1192. heavily in

  1193. North Africa

  1194. and the

  1195. Middle East

  1196. is Islam,

  1197. pink

  1198. concentrated in

  1199. India is

  1200. Hinduism,

  1201. orange is

  1202. for Buddhism,

  1203. and the tan

  1204. color in much

  1205. of China

  1206. represents

  1207. agnosticism.

  1208. And that

  1209. multicolored

  1210. region in the

  1211. center represents

  1212. the areas of

  1213. greatest missions

  1214. need.

  1215. And that

  1216. map might make

  1217. us think that

  1218. Christians are a

  1219. minority in those

  1220. regions, those

  1221. countries, because

  1222. people there are

  1223. more resistant to

  1224. the gospel.

  1225. But that would be

  1226. a false

  1227. assumption.

  1228. Take a look at

  1229. this next map

  1230. that shows

  1231. people's

  1232. responsiveness

  1233. to evangelism.

  1234. the darker the

  1235. color, the

  1236. more responsive

  1237. they are.

  1238. There's no

  1239. reason why we

  1240. shouldn't be going

  1241. to those

  1242. places.

  1243. the harvest is

  1244. plentiful.

  1245. Laborers are

  1246. few.

  1247. I pray, hope, that

  1248. our church sends

  1249. many missionaries to

  1250. these places.

  1251. People are coming to

  1252. know the Lord in

  1253. these places.

  1254. And it's our

  1255. calling as the

  1256. people of God to

1257. go to the ends of

  1258. the earth so that

  1259. God who deserves

  1260. all glory and

  1261. honor and praise

  1262. is worshipped from

  1263. every nation, tribe,

  1264. and tongue.

  1265. That's our

  1266. greatest consuming

  1267. desire to see him

  1268. glorified among all

  1269. the nations.

  1270. That's what this

  1271. mission is about.

  1272. And as Jesus

  1273. sends out the 72,

  1274. he tells them this

  1275. in verse 2,

  1276. the harvest is

  1277. plentiful, but the

  1278. laborers are few.

  1279. therefore pray

  1280. earnestly to the

  1281. Lord of the harvest

  1282. to send out

  1283. laborers into

  1284. his harvest.

  1285. This single

  1286. verse dispels

  1287. two of the most

  1288. pernicious lies

  1289. that prevent

  1290. Christians from

  1291. proclaiming the

  1292. good news of

  1293. Jesus Christ.

  1294. First is the

  1295. lie that evangelism

  1296. is futile,

  1297. that no one

  1298. wants to hear

  1299. the good news of

  1300. Jesus Christ.

  1301. but Jesus

  1302. tells us here

  1303. that the harvest

  1304. is plentiful.

  1305. Even here in the

  1306. United States of

  1307. America, even here

  1308. in New England,

  1309. the frozen chosen

  1310. they say.

  1311. The harvest

  1312. is plentiful.

  1313. Yes, we will face

  1314. rejection sometimes.

  1315. There is a

  1316. threshold of pain

  1317. to cross, but

  1318. there are still

  1319. plenty of people

  1320. who respond

  1321. favorably to the

  1322. gospel.

  1323. The harvest is

  1324. plentiful.

  1325. What is lacking

  1326. is not the

  1327. harvest as we

  1328. like to think,

  1329. but it is the

  1330. workers, the

  1331. labors that are

  1332. lacking.

  1333. The labors are

  1334. few, and one of

  1335. the purposes of

  1336. discipleship is to

  1337. increase the

  1338. labor force, the

  1339. workforce that

  1340. will go into

  1341. this harvest.

  1342. So, he tells us,

  1343. pray earnestly to

  1344. the Lord of the

  1345. harvest to send

  1346. out laborers into

  1347. his harvest.

  1348. This part exposes

  1349. the second line.

  1350. The second line

  1351. that says we are

  1352. responsible for

  1353. creating the

  1354. harvest.

  1355. It's our job to

  1356. get people

  1357. converted.

  1358. That's not our

  1359. job.

  1360. God is the

  1361. Lord of the

  1362. harvest.

  1363. He is the

  1364. Lord of the

  1365. harvest.

  1366. It's his

  1367. harvest.

  1368. He is the

  1369. one that gets

  1370. it ready.

  1371. We simply go

  1372. and tell people

  1373. about the

  1374. saving news of

  1375. Jesus Christ,

  1376. and it's up to

  1377. God to enable

  1378. them to hear

  1379. and believe it.

  1380. So, if you're

  1381. telling people

  1382. about Jesus,

  1383. which I know

  1384. many of you

  1385. are,

  1386. regardless of

  1387. how many or

  1388. how few of

  1389. them become

  1390. Christians as a

  1391. result of your

  1392. testimony,

  1393. you're being

  1394. faithful to your

  1395. calling.

  1396. You're being

  1397. faithful as a

  1398. Christian disciple.

  1399. Does Romans 10

  1400. not say this?

  1401. For everyone

  1402. who calls on

  1403. the name of

  1404. the Lord will

  1405. be saved.

  1406. How then will

  1407. they call on

  1408. him unless

  1409. they have

  1410. believed?

  1411. And how

  1412. could they

  1413. believe if

  1414. they have

  1415. never heard?

  1416. And how

  1417. can they

  1418. hear unless

  1419. someone preaches

  1420. to them?

  1421. And how can

  1422. someone preach

  1423. unless they

  1424. are sent?

  1425. And we can

  1426. add to that

  1427. this verse

  1428. in Luke 10.

  1429. How are they

  1430. going to be

  1431. sent unless

  1432. you pray

  1433. earnestly to

  1434. the Lord of

  1435. the harvest for

  1436. laborers?

  1437. It begins

  1438. with earnest

  1439. prayer for

  1440. more laborers.

  1441. And the

  1442. laborers go,

  1443. and then they're

  1444. sent, and

  1445. then they

  1446. preach, and

  1447. then they

  1448. hear, and

  1449. then they

  1450. believe, and

  1451. then they

  1452. are saved.

  1453. It's great

  1454. that we pray

  1455. for the

  1456. salvation of

  1457. our non-Christian

  1458. friends and

  1459. neighbors.

  1460. We need to

  1461. go beyond

  1462. that.

  1463. Pray for

  1464. ourselves, that

  1465. God may

  1466. embolden us as

  1467. his witnesses,

  1468. that God may

  1469. give us open

  1470. doors of

  1471. opportunity to

  1472. share the

  1473. gospel with

  1474. people.

  1475. We need

  1476. more laborers.

  1477. And these

  1478. laborers that

  1479. are raised

  1480. up must be

  1481. prepared for

  1482. suffering,

  1483. sacrifice, and

  1484. service.

  1485. Because Jesus

  1486. says in verse

  1487. 3,

  1488. Go your way,

  1489. behold, I am

  1490. sending you out

  1491. as lambs in

  1492. the midst of

  1493. wolves.

  1494. If the

  1495. verses weren't

  1496. so morbid,

  1497. like it's

  1498. almost humorous,

  1499. right?

  1500. This is

  1501. their kind

  1502. of final

  1503. huddle before

  1504. they're sent

  1505. out into

  1506. this mission.

  1507. Everyone

  1508. bring your

  1509. hands in,

  1510. right?

  1511. Let's go.

  1512. Lamb among

  1513. wolves.

  1514. What?

  1515. Conquering

  1516. lions?

  1517. How about

  1518. that?

  1519. Lamb among

  1520. wolves.

  1521. Why?

  1522. Because Jesus

  1523. was the

  1524. slain lamb

  1525. of God.

  1526. And we

  1527. go as his

  1528. representatives.

  1529. And so

  1530. when we

  1531. represent him

  1532. and when we

  1533. obey him,

  1534. when we

  1535. live for him,

  1536. and as a

  1537. result of

  1538. that we

  1539. suffer,

  1540. ridicule

  1541. and suffering,

  1542. we become

  1543. pictures for

  1544. this world to

  1545. see of the

  1546. slain lamb

  1547. of God

  1548. himself.

  1549. That's the

  1550. privilege of

  1551. being lamb

  1552. among wolves.

  1553. We are

  1554. living

  1555. pictures,

  1556. metaphors of

  1557. Christ,

  1558. our king,

  1559. our slain

  1560. lamb.

  1561. That's the

  1562. glorious

  1563. calling.

  1564. And Jesus

  1565. continues his

  1566. challenging

  1567. instruction in

  1568. verse 4,

  1569. carry no

  1570. money bag,

  1571. no knapsack,

  1572. no sandals,

  1573. and greet no

  1574. one on the

  1575. road.

  1576. The task

  1577. is so

  1578. urgent that

  1579. the disciples,

  1580. like a farmer

  1581. who only looks

  1582. forward while

  1583. plowing the

  1584. field,

  1585. are to avoid

  1586. distractions by

  1587. greeting no

  1588. one on the

  1589. road.

  1590. They are to

  1591. go straight to

  1592. their destinations

  1593. and proclaim

  1594. the kingdom of

  1595. God.

  1596. And as they

  1597. go,

  1598. they're to

  1599. travel lightly

  1600. and deliberately

  1601. forego extra

  1602. provisions.

  1603. Jesus is not

  1604. telling them to

  1605. go barefoot.

  1606. What he's telling

  1607. them is do not

  1608. carry sandals.

  1609. They're already

  1610. wearing sandals.

  1611. He's telling

  1612. them not to

  1613. carry an extra

  1614. pair of sandals.

  1615. Don't pack

  1616. anything extra.

  1617. These instructions

  1618. for missions

  1619. work are not

  1620. normative for

  1621. us today,

  1622. as I mentioned

  1623. a couple weeks

  1624. ago.

  1625. And the reason

  1626. for that is

  1627. because Jesus

  1628. explicitly modifies

  1629. this instruction

  1630. later in Luke

    Luke 22:35–37

  1631. chapter 22

  1632. verses 35 to

  1633. 37.

  1634. He says to

  1635. them,

  1636. When I sent

  1637. you out with

  1638. no money bag

  1639. or knapsack

  1640. or sandals,

  1641. did you lack

  1642. anything?

  1643. They said

  1644. nothing.

  1645. He said to

  1646. them,

  1647. But now let

  1648. the one who

  1649. has a money

  1650. bag take it

  1651. and likewise

  1652. a knapsack

  1653. and let the

  1654. one who has

  1655. no sword

  1656. sell his cloak

  1657. and buy one.

  1658. For I tell

  1659. you that the

  1660. scripture must be

  1661. fulfilled.

  1662. in me

  1663. and he was

  1664. numbered with

  1665. the transgressors

  1666. for what is

  1667. written about

  1668. me has

  1669. its fulfillment.

  1670. So that's

  1671. the instruction

  1672. that Jesus

  1673. gives just

  1674. before he's

  1675. arrested and

  1676. dies on the

  1677. cross.

  1678. So he

  1679. explicitly

  1680. modifies this

  1681. instruction.

  1682. And the

  1683. reason why

  1684. he changes

  1685. it is because

  1686. now that

  1687. Jesus is

  1688. dying and

  1689. being treated

  1690. as a sinner,

  1691. he's being

  1692. persecuted and

  1693. killed on

  1694. account of him,

  1695. all those who

  1696. follow him

  1697. will face

  1698. similar

  1699. fates and

  1700. so they can

  1701. no longer

  1702. count on

  1703. the receptivity

  1704. and hospitality

  1705. of the people

  1706. that they

  1707. minister to.

  1708. So they

  1709. have to

  1710. take provisions

  1711. for themselves.

  1712. So that's

  1713. why that

  1714. changes later.

  1715. But even if

  1716. the specific

  1717. practice doesn't

  1718. apply to us

  1719. now, the

  1720. principle that

  1721. is taught here

  1722. in Luke

    Luke 10 chapter mention

  1723. chapter 10

  1724. applies to us

  1725. because by, as I

  1726. mentioned before,

  1727. there's a Bible

  1728. commentator who

  1729. calls this a

  1730. calculated deficit.

  1731. by traveling

  1732. with no extra

  1733. provisions, the

  1734. disciples were

  1735. intentionally

  1736. handicapped,

  1737. intentionally given

  1738. a calculated

  1739. deficit so

  1740. that they're

  1741. forced to

  1742. depend on

  1743. God's

  1744. provision, so

  1745. that they

  1746. have to

  1747. minister by

  1748. faith and

  1749. not by

  1750. sight, and

  1751. so that they

  1752. have to

  1753. expect God

  1754. and pray to

  1755. God to

  1756. supply all

  1757. of their

  1758. spiritual and

  1759. material

  1760. shortfalls.

  1761. That's the

  1762. nature of

  1763. Christian

  1764. mission and

  1765. discipleship.

  1766. Similarly, you

  1767. might feel

  1768. inadequate for

  1769. the task of

  1770. evangelism and

  1771. discipleship.

  1772. Will I have

  1773. the right

  1774. words to

  1775. say?

  1776. What if I

  1777. don't have the

  1778. answers to

  1779. their questions?

  1780. What if they

  1781. reject me and

  1782. think I'm

  1783. stupid?

  1784. I'm so sinful,

  1785. am I even

  1786. worthy to be

  1787. an ambassador

  1788. for Christ?

  1789. But God

  1790. sends all of

  1791. us with all

  1792. of those nagging

  1793. questions,

  1794. because even

  1795. the most

  1796. seasoned and

  1797. gifted evangelists

  1798. among us are

  1799. sent with the

  1800. calculated deficit.

  1801. So we find our

  1802. sufficiency not in

  1803. ourselves, but in

  1804. the Lord of the

  1805. harvest.

  1806. And one of the

  1807. means that God

  1808. uses to provide for

  1809. his servants will

  1810. be people of

  1811. peace.

  1812. Jesus says in

  1813. verses 5 to

  1814. 8, whatever

  1815. house you enter

  1816. first say, peace

  1817. be to this

  1818. house, and if a

  1819. son of peace is

  1820. there, your

  1821. peace will rest

  1822. upon him.

  1823. But if not, it

  1824. will return to

  1825. you and remain

  1826. in the same

  1827. house, eating and

  1828. drinking what they

  1829. provide, for the

  1830. laborer deserves his

  1831. wages.

  1832. Do not go from

  1833. house to house.

  1834. Whenever you enter a

  1835. town and they

  1836. receive you, eat

  1837. what is set before

  1838. you.

  1839. The biblical

  1840. concept of peace

  1841. is not just an

  1842. absence of

  1843. conflict, but it's

  1844. a spiritual

  1845. wholeness of

  1846. being rightly

  1847. ordered and

  1848. being in proper

  1849. relation to God

1850. and to the rest of

  1851. creation.

  1852. It's a wholeness.

  1853. And so this is

  1854. not just a

  1855. greeting, but it's

  1856. a blessing.

  1857. It's really a

  1858. promise of

  1859. salvation should

  1860. they receive these

  1861. messengers and

  1862. believe in their

  1863. message.

  1864. And so these

  1865. people of peace, the

1866. son of peace is a

  1867. reference to the

  1868. child of the

  1869. kingdom that Jesus

  1870. mentioned earlier.

  1871. These are those who

1872. are like the child, who

  1873. believe in Jesus, who

  1874. come with humble

  1875. faith to Jesus and

  1876. receive and provide

  1877. for his disciples.

  1878. And when received

  1879. into home, the

  1880. disciples are to

  1881. heal the sick and

  1882. say to them, the

  1883. kingdom of God has

  1884. come near to you.

  1885. And they are to

  1886. announce the kingdom

1887. of God and to give

  1888. evidence of the

  1889. kingdom of God by

  1890. healing the sick.

  1891. But it says in

  1892. verses 10 to 12,

  1893. whenever you enter a

  1894. town and they do

  1895. not receive you, go

  1896. into its streets and

1897. say, even the dust of

  1898. your own town that

1899. clings to our feet, we

  1900. wipe off against you.

  1901. Nevertheless, know

  1902. this, that the

  1903. kingdom of God has

  1904. come near.

  1905. I tell you, it

  1906. will be more

  1907. bearable on that

  1908. day for Sodom than

  1909. for that town.

  1910. So wiping off the

  1911. dust from your feet,

1912. as we talked about a

1913. few weeks ago, is a

  1914. dramatic gesture that

  1915. conveys that you have

  1916. nothing more to do

  1917. with this town.

  1918. It's a symbol of

  1919. judgment.

  1920. And the disciples are

1921. still to tell them that

1922. the kingdom of God has

  1923. come near.

  1924. But notice the

  1925. important distinction

  1926. between what they are

1927. to say to those who

  1928. receive them in verse

1929. 9 and what they are to

1930. say here to those who

  1931. reject them.

  1932. Earlier they were to

  1933. say to those who

  1934. receive them, the

  1935. kingdom of God has

  1936. come near to you.

  1937. But here they are

  1938. simply to say the

  1939. kingdom of God has

  1940. come near, but not

  1941. to you.

  1942. The kingdom of God

  1943. has come.

  1944. It is still near.

  1945. But to those who

  1946. reject the disciples

1947. of Christ, it has not

  1948. come to them.

1949. They are still on the

  1950. outside looking in.

  1951. And Jesus pronounces a

  1952. series of judgments.

1953. He says, I tell you,

  1954. it will be more

  1955. bearable on that day

  1956. for Sodom than for

  1957. that town.

  1958. Sodom is kind of

  1959. the perfect example of

1960. sin city in the Bible,

  1961. right?

  1962. So infamous for its

  1963. wickedness that God

  1964. literally destroyed it

  1965. with fire and brimstone

  1966. in Genesis 19.

  1967. That's where the

  1968. phrase fire and

  1969. brimstone comes from.

  1970. And Jesus says here

  1971. that that's how bad

  1972. Sodom was.

1973. Yet on the day of

  1974. final judgment, what

  1975. God renders his

  1976. verdict, the towns that

  1977. reject Jesus' followers

1978. will face a more severe

  1979. judgment even than

  1980. Sodom.

  1981. And then he pronounces

1982. woes on several of the

  1983. cities in the Jewish

  1984. region of Galilee, that

  1985. their judgment will be

  1986. worse than the wicked

  1987. cities of Tyre and

  1988. Sidon from the Old

  1989. Testament.

  1990. And there's a reason

  1991. why the current

  1992. generation is accountable

  1993. for the current

  1994. generation since Jesus'

  1995. time, and that includes

  1996. us, we're liable to

  1997. greater punishment than

1998. even the worst of the

  1999. past generations because

  2000. we have received the

  2001. greater revelation.

  2002. And therefore, we'll be

  2003. held accountable for

  2004. more.

  2005. Jesus explains this in

  2006. verse 16.

2007. The one who hears you

2008. hears me, and the one

  2009. who rejects you rejects

2010. me, and the one who

  2011. rejects me rejects him

  2012. who sent me.

  2013. The disciples of Christ

  2014. represent the power and

  2015. authority of Christ

  2016. himself, and Christ

  2017. represents the power and

  2018. authority of God the

  2019. Father himself.

  2020. So to reject the

2021. disciples of Christ is to

  2022. reject God himself, and

  2023. the past generations

2024. didn't have this kind of

  2025. revelation, this kind of

  2026. privilege.

  2027. We've benefited from the

  2028. personal visitation of the

  2029. incarnate God.

  2030. We have benefited from

  2031. unprecedented demonstrations

2032. of the power of the

  2033. Spirit, and for that

  2034. reason, we'll be held

  2035. accountable for more than

  2036. the previous generation.

  2037. That's the fearful

  2038. judgment that our

  2039. neighbors and friends who

2040. do not know the Lord

  2041. face.

  2042. It's our responsibility to

2043. tell them, to warn them

2044. about it, and that's the

  2045. loving thing to do.

  2046. A 20th century American

  2047. pastor named Lee Rutland

  2048. Scarborough once said

2049. this, if we could only have

  2050. a five-minute glimpse into

2051. hell, our evangelism would be

  2052. changed for a lifetime.

2053. Do you really know the

2054. peril that awaits those who

  2055. perish apart from Christ?

  2056. People being tormented in

2057. hell for eternity are not

2058. going to be impressed that we

2059. were too polite to warn

  2060. them.

2061. We just don't get it

  2062. sometimes.

2063. I include myself in that.

2064. Do we really believe that

2065. Jesus Christ is the only way

  2066. to salvation or not?

2067. Do we really believe in life

  2068. eternal?

2069. Do we really believe in God

2070. our Father, in Christ the

2071. Son, in the Holy Spirit?

2072. Do we really believe in the

  2073. name of Jesus?

  2074. Because Jesus instructed his

2075. disciples to greet no one on

2076. the road because that's how

  2077. urgent this task is.

2078. But are we so distracted by

  2079. the trinkets and frivolities

2080. and pleasantries of this life

2081. that we have lost sight of the

  2082. irreplaceability and the

  2083. urgency of this proclamation?

2084. It's the proclamation of the

  2085. discipleship.

2086. The price of discipleship is high

  2087. and the proclamation of

  2088. discipleship is imperative and

2089. what motivates us still to pay

2090. that price and proclaim the

2091. gospel is the privilege of

  2092. discipleship that Jesus speaks

  2093. of in verses 17 to 24.

  2094. Please read verses 17 to 20

  2095. with me.

2096. The 72 returned with joy

2097. saying, Lord, even the demons

2098. are subject to us in your name.

2099. And he said to them, I saw

  2100. Satan falling like lightning

  2101. from heaven.

2102. Behold, I have given you

2103. authority to tread on serpents

2104. and scorpions and over all the

2105. power of the enemy and nothing

  2106. shall hurt you.

2107. Nevertheless, do not rejoice in

2108. this, that the spirits are

2109. subject to you, but rejoice that

2110. your names are written in

  2111. heaven.

2112. They return with joy seeing that

2113. even the demons are subject to

2114. the name of Jesus Christ.

2115. They have the authority to tread on

2116. serpents and scorpions and that

2117. meaning of that phrase is explained

2118. by the next phrase, and over all the

2119. power of the enemy and nothing

  2120. shall hurt you.

  2121. So serpents and scorpions

2122. represent powers of the enemy.

2123. So we shouldn't be going out in

2124. search for serpents and scorpions

2125. trying to step on them to test

  2126. this authority.

  2127. They symbolize, they're venomous

2128. beasts that symbolize the poisonous

2129. power of evil and they will not

2130. prevail against true disciples of

2131. Christ because God will protect and

2132. preserve us from the power of the

  2133. enemy.

2134. But it's not this authority and

2135. power that's the chief source of

  2136. our joy.

2137. Rather, the chief source of our joy is

2138. that our names are written in

  2139. heaven.

2140. Those who have been united with Jesus

2141. Christ by faith are included in that

  2142. heavenly roll call.

2143. We're in the census of heaven.

  2144. If refugees fleeing life-threatening

2145. situations, they break down with

2146. tearful joy that their names are on

2147. that immigration list, how much more

2148. should we rejoice that we have been

2149. spared from eternity in hell?

2150. That we will get to share eternity

2151. with God, who is the infinite

2152. perfection of all that is good and

2153. right and beautiful and glorious.

2154. That even though we face trials and

2155. tribulations here, even though we are

2156. strangers and exiles here on earth,

2157. that we have a home in heaven, that we

2158. have a citizenship in the kingdom of

2159. God, that any, we have an inheritance

2160. in the family of God.

2161. That's the joy of knowing Jesus

  2162. Christ.

2163. And if you're not yet a follower of

2164. Christ, I want to exhort you.

2165. This is how you come to know that joy.

  2166. Verses 21 and 22.

2167. In that same hour, Jesus rejoiced in the

  2168. Holy Spirit and said,

2169. I thank you, Father, Lord of heaven and

2170. earth, that you have hidden these things

2171. from the wise and understanding and

2172. reveal them to little children.

2173. Yes, Father, for such was your gracious

  2174. will.

2175. All things have been handed over to me by

  2176. my father.

2177. And no one knows who the son is except

2178. the father or who the father is except

2179. the son and anyone to whom the son

  2180. chooses to reveal him.

2181. Jesus is the one mediator between God

  2182. and man.

2183. No one comes to the father except through

  2184. him.

2185. And Jesus, as the son of God, has the

2186. exclusive privilege of revealing God the

2187. father to us and bringing us into

  2188. relationship with him.

2189. And the initiative doesn't lie with us.

  2190. It lies with him.

2191. No one knows who the father is except the

2192. son and anyone to whom the son chooses

  2193. to reveal him.

  2194. It's his sovereign choice.

2195. That's what the doctrine of election is

  2196. about.

2197. It's Jesus who sovereignly chooses who

2198. will be whom he will reveal God the

  2199. father to.

2200. But then how can we know if we are among

  2201. God's chosen people?

2202. Verse 21 tells us, you have hidden these

2203. things from the wise and understanding and

2204. reveal them to little children.

2205. Those to whom God has revealed himself are

  2206. called little children.

2207. And that's the key that unlocks the

  2208. privilege of discipleship.

2209. Jesus said earlier in Luke 9, 48, whoever

2210. receives this child in my name receives me.

2211. And whoever receives me receives him who

  2212. sent me.

2213. For he who is least among you is the one

  2214. who is great.

2215. Those who rely on their own wisdom, their

2216. own righteousness, their own morality

2217. cannot come to know God.

2218. Only those who become like little

  2219. children.

2220. Only those who humble themselves before

  2221. God.

2222. Only those who become the least.

2223. Only those who acknowledge that their

2224. righteousness is insufficient and repent

  2225. of their sins.

2226. Only those who acknowledge that their

2227. wisdom is insufficient and confess their

  2228. ignorance before God.

2229. Only those who abandon all hope of

2230. saving themselves and entrust themselves

2231. and cling entirely to the Jesus Christ

2232. who was sent to die for our sins on the

2233. cross and was raised from the dead on the

2234. third day and ascended to the right hand of

  2235. the father.

2236. Those who cling to him alone like a child

2237. that clings desperately to his parent.

  2238. He alone.

2239. She alone will be saved.

  2240. That's the little child.

2241. Only such people are the little children to

2242. whom God has revealed himself.

2243. So I urge you to do that today.

  2244. Humble yourselves today.

2245. Become children of God today.

  2246. Amen.

  2247. Amen.

  2248. Amen.

  2249. Amen.

  2250. Amen.

  2251. Amen.

  2252. Amen.

  2253. Amen.

  2254. Amen.

  2255. Amen.

  2256. Amen.

  2257. Amen.

  2258. Amen.

  2259. Amen.

  2260. Amen.

  2261. Amen.

  2262. Amen.

  2263. Amen.
