  1. Luke chapter 10, verses 25 to 42.

    Luke 10:25–42

  2. And behold, a lawyer stood up to put him to the test, saying,

  3. Teacher, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?

  4. He said to him, What is written in the law?

  5. How do you read it?

  6. And he answered, You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart

  7. and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind

  8. and your neighbor as yourself.

  9. And he said to him, You have answered correctly.

  10. Do this and you will live.

  11. But he, desiring to justify himself, said to Jesus,

  12. And who is my neighbor?

  13. Jesus replied, A man was going down from Jerusalem to Jericho,

  14. and he fell among robbers who stripped him and beat him and departed,

  15. leaving him half dead.

  16. Now by chance, a priest was going down that road,

  17. and when he saw him, he passed by on the other side.

  18. So likewise, a Levite, when he came to the place and saw him,

  19. passed by on the other side.

  20. But a Samaritan, as he journeyed, came to where he was,

  21. and when he saw him, he had compassion.

  22. He went to him and bound up his wounds, pouring on oil and wine.

  23. Then he set him on his own animal and brought him to an inn and took care of him.

  24. And the next day, he took out two denarii and gave them to the innkeeper,

  25. saying, Take care of him, and whatever more you spend,

  26. I will repay you when I come back.

  27. Which of these three do you think proved to be a neighbor

  28. to the man who fell among the robbers?

  29. He said, The one who showed him mercy.

  30. And Jesus said to him, You go and do likewise.

  31. Now as they went on their way, Jesus entered a village,

  32. and a woman named Martha welcomed him into her house.

  33. And she had a sister called Mary,

  34. who sat at the Lord's feet and listened to his teaching.

  35. But Martha was distracted with much serving,

  36. and she went up to him and said,

  37. Lord, do you not care that my sister has left me to serve alone?

  38. Tell her then to help me.

  39. But the Lord answered her,

  40. Martha, Martha,

  41. you are anxious and troubled about many things,

  42. but one thing is necessary.

  43. Mary has chosen the good portion,

  44. which will not be taken away from her.

  45. This is God's infallible and authoritative word.

  46. The elusive pursuit of immortality

  47. has been at the heart of humanity's spiritual aspirations throughout history.

  48. And that's because God created us for eternal life.

  49. But as Genesis chapter 3, verses 22 to 24 teach us,

    Genesis 3:22–24

  50. he mercifully cut us off from that possibility of eternal life

  51. because of our sin,

  52. because we rebelled against him,

  53. lest we live forever in our state of rebellion and separation from God.

  54. God cut us off from that possibility.

  55. And ever since then,

  56. so many people have sought immortality apart from God,

  57. even though it is only to be found in him.

  58. And the Jews, likewise, are preoccupied with this question.

  59. And verse 25 says that,

  60. Behold, a lawyer stood up to put Jesus to the test.

  61. The lawyer in view here is not an attorney that we think of

  62. when we think of here the word lawyer,

  63. but a teacher of the Jewish law.

  64. It's a religious scholar and an expert of the Jewish Torah,

  65. the first five books of the Bible.

  66. And he stands up from the midst of the crowd and questions Jesus.

  67. Teacher, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?

  68. So as a Jew who believed in the promise of the resurrection life

  69. spoken of in Daniel, the book of Daniel,

  70. the scribe wants to make sure that he doesn't miss out in the end.

  71. How can I make sure that I will be raised

  72. to inherit that eternal resurrection life in the end?

  73. And Jesus answers his question with a counter question in verse 26,

  74. as he often does.

  75. He asks him,

  76. What is written in the law?

  77. How do you read it?

  78. This is a significant question because as Jesus says this,

  79. he reveals his belief that the answer,

  80. the correct answer to describe this lawyer's question

  81. is provided in the revealed will of God

  82. in the Old Testament scriptures.

  83. He points the Bible scholar back to the Bible.

  84. And the lawyer actually gives the correct answer.

  85. Jesus points that out in verse 28.

  86. And the answer is what we now know as the greatest commandment.

  87. In verse 27,

  88. You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart

  89. and with all your soul and with all your strength

  90. and with all your mind

  91. and your neighbor as yourself.

  92. Or the command which we had as part of our call to worship earlier today

  93. from Deuteronomy 6 verse 5,

    Deuteronomy 6:5

  94. The love of the Lord your God with all your heart and soul and strength and mind.

  95. That comes from Deuteronomy.

  96. And the command to love your neighbor as yourself

  97. comes from Leviticus chapter 19 verse 18.

    Leviticus 19:18

  98. So in sum, in the entire Old Testament,

  99. there were 613 commandments.

  100. And all of those were summarized in what we know as the Ten Commandments.

  101. And the Ten Commandments are really distilled in this greatest commandment.

  102. The first four of the Ten Commandments,

  103. which deal with our relationship to God,

  104. how we have to relate to Him,

  105. are summarized in the command to love the Lord your God

  106. with all your heart, soul, mind, and strength.

  107. And the command, the last six of the Ten Commandments,

  108. which deal with our relation to one another,

  109. is summarized in the command to love your neighbor as yourself.

  110. And that's why this is called the greatest commandment.

  111. It's the greatest commandment, not in the sense that it's one of many.

  112. It's like the best among all the other commandments.

  113. It's the one command, rather, that encompasses all of the other commands.

  114. And that's why in Matthew 22, 40,

  115. Jesus writes that all the law and the prophets hang on these two commandments.

  116. And that's why Paul writes repeatedly that the whole law is fulfilled

  117. in these double love commands.

  118. So then what then do these all-important love commands mean?

  119. When it comes to loving God,

  120. what's emphasized is the totality of devotion.

  121. We have to be totally devoted to Him.

  122. Notice the four times the word all is repeated.

  123. We have to love God with all our heart,

  124. and with all our soul,

  125. and with all our strength,

  126. and with all our mind.

  127. The word heart refers to the inner person.

  128. It's the seed of our thoughts and our beliefs,

  129. as the Bible uses the word.

  130. That's why in Luke 1, 51, and Luke 2, 35,

  131. it speaks of the thoughts of people's hearts.

  132. It's the inner person.

  133. The word soul refers to the spirit or life of a person.

  134. Strength refers to our might or energy.

  135. And mind refers to our cognitive faculty.

  136. And in English,

  137. we use these terms in vaguely interchangeable ways, don't we?

  138. We say things like,

  139. put your heart into it.

  140. Put your soul into it.

  141. Bear your heart to that person.

  142. Bear your soul to that person.

  143. What's on your mind?

  144. What's on your heart?

  145. Do it with all your strength.

  146. Do it with all your heart.

  147. So we use it interchangeably,

  148. and it's actually very similar in the Bible.

  149. These terms are used interchangeably in a lot of places.

  150. So it's kind of hard to pin them down

  151. and define it clearly and say,

  152. this means that, and that means that.

  153. And they overlap.

  154. And so what's being emphasized here

  155. is not that we are to use these four different faculties

  156. to worship God and to love Him,

  157. but rather that we are to use the totality

  158. of all of our abilities,

  159. all of our faculties,

  160. all that we are to love Him and follow Him.

  161. It calls for a reorientation of our whole selves

  162. to God's purposes and priorities.

  163. As I like to say,

  164. I frequently,

  165. that loving God,

  166. following Him,

  167. being His disciple,

  168. is not a part-time preoccupation.

  169. It's an all-consuming affair

  170. that requires total allegiance.

  171. When it comes to loving our neighbors,

  172. what's emphasized

  173. is not the totality of devotion,

  174. but selfless service.

  175. We are to love our neighbor as ourselves.

  176. Some people over-psychologize this verse,

  177. and they say that this means

  178. we must first love ourselves,

  179. because how can you love someone else

  180. unless you love someone as yourself

  181. unless you love yourself?

  182. And they use this verse

  183. to teach the importance of self-love

  184. or self-esteem,

  185. when that's precisely the opposite

  186. of what this verse is commanding.

  187. The verse does not command self-love.

  188. It assumes self-love

  189. and teaches us to subordinate

  190. our self-love to neighbor love.

  191. We naturally have our own interests in mind

  192. as human beings.

  193. We're naturally selfish.

  194. But Scripture commands us to look out

  195. not only for our own interests,

  196. but also for our neighbor's interests.

  197. Instead of being selfish

  198. with our time,

  199. with our relationships,

  200. with our money,

  201. we should be selfless

  202. toward our neighbor.

  203. It requires us to sacrifice.

  204. So to put it another way,

  205. to summarize the greatest commandment,

  206. it means to love God

  207. with our whole selves

  208. and to love our neighbor

  209. as ourselves.

  210. That's really the main point,

  211. main point of this passage.

  212. But that's still pretty abstract,

  213. isn't it?

  214. What does that look like?

  215. And so Luke actually

  216. helpfully illustrates

  217. the greatest commandment

  218. in very concrete terms

  219. in the following two stories.

  220. first is the parable

  221. of the Good Samaritan

  222. in verses 29 to 37,

  223. which show us

  224. what it looks like

  225. to love our neighbor

  226. as ourselves.

  227. And then,

  228. in the following story

  229. of Martha and Mary

  230. in verses 38 to 42,

  231. Luke teaches us

  232. how we ought to love God

  233. with our whole selves.

  234. So let's first look at

  235. what it means

  236. to love our neighbor

  237. as ourselves

  238. in verses 29 to 37.

  239. He says in verse 29

  240. that the lawyer,

  241. desiring to justify himself,

  242. said to Jesus,

  243. who is my neighbor?

  244. The lawyer wanted

  245. to prove himself right.

  246. He wanted to show himself

  247. to be righteous.

  248. So he asked a follow-up question,

  249. who is my neighbor?

  250. Expecting Jesus

  251. to kind of narrow down

  252. the definition a bit,

  253. narrow the scope

  254. of the commands

  255. to make it a little more feasible,

  256. accessible.

  257. He's my neighbor,

  258. my own family.

  259. Or maybe the people

  260. that live in the immediate vicinity.

  261. The ones in my condo.

  262. Or maybe only my fellow Jews,

  263. which is how most rabbis

  264. during this time

  265. interpreted that command.

  266. This lawyer wants

  267. and expects Jesus

  268. to restrict the definition

  269. of neighbor

  270. in a way that allows him

  271. to demonstrate

  272. that he has kept

  273. the greatest commandment.

  274. Oh yeah,

  275. I love my fellow Jews.

  276. I love my fellow people.

  277. We're also tempted

  278. at times like this,

  279. aren't we,

  280. to adopt

  281. the minimum requirement mentality

  282. in order to justify ourselves.

  283. Hebrews 10, 24 to 25

  284. commands us,

  285. let us consider

  286. how to stir up one another

  287. to love and good works

  288. and neglecting

  289. to meet together,

  290. not neglecting

  291. to meet together

  292. as is the habit of some,

  293. but encouraging one another.

  294. Scripture commands us

  295. not to neglect

  296. meeting together,

  297. but what exactly

  298. does it mean

  299. to neglect

  300. the meeting together?

  301. We try to define it.

  302. Surely,

  303. attending worship service

  304. once a month

  305. can't be considered

  306. neglect, right?

  307. If I always attend

  308. Easter and Christmas services,

  309. that's infrequent,

  310. sure,

  311. but that's not neglect,

  312. right?

  313. Well,

  314. I'm not part

  315. of a local church,

  316. but hey,

  317. I watch live stream services

  318. online and listen

  319. to sermon podcasts.

  320. Surely,

  321. that meets the requirement,

  322. doesn't it?

  323. We try to find

  324. the minimum requirement

  325. because we want

  326. to fulfill it

  327. and say

  328. and justify ourselves.

  329. 2 Corinthians 9,

  330. 6 to 7

  331. says,

  332. the point is this,

  333. whoever sows sparingly

  334. will also reap sparingly

  335. and whoever sows bountifully

  336. will also reap bountifully.

  337. Each one must give

  338. as he has decided

  339. in his heart,

  340. not reluctantly

  341. or under compulsion

  342. for God loves

  343. a cheerful giver.

  344. Okay,

  345. so God commands us

  346. to give to the church,

  347. but how much

  348. should we give?

  349. What's the minimum requirement?

  350. If I give a couple bucks

  351. every week cheerfully,

  352. that's enough,

  353. right?

  354. Tell me,

  355. how much do I need to give?

  356. I hear this question a lot.

  357. How much do I need to give?

  358. 10%?

  359. Just tell me,

  360. I'll do it.

  361. Tithing means

  362. maybe I'm slowing

  363. bountifully,

  364. right?

  365. Is it okay

  366. to give 10%

  367. after taxes?

  368. Okay,

  369. fine.

  370. I'll give 10%

  371. before taxes.

  372. Well,

  373. then I've done it,

  374. right?

  375. That means I've

  376. sold bountifully.

  377. I've met the requirement.

  378. Instead of wanting

  379. to obey God

  380. to the fullest,

  381. instead of wanting

  382. to remain

  383. in the center

  384. of his will,

  385. we look to fulfill

  386. the minimum requirement

  387. so we could

  388. get a passing grade.

  389. We're like a person

  390. who's trying to find

  391. all the loopholes

  392. in the tax code

  393. so we can pay

  394. as little tax

  395. as possible.

  396. That's not how

  397. Christian obedience

  398. is supposed to be

  399. and that's exactly

  400. what this lawyer

  401. is trying to do.

  402. So who exactly

  403. is my neighbor?

  404. Tell me exactly.

  405. Restrict it.

  406. Define it.

  407. Narrow it down

  408. for me so that

  409. I can fulfill it

  410. and feel good

  411. about myself

  412. and justify myself

  413. before the eyes of men.

  414. And Jesus replies

  415. in verses 30 to 35

  416. with the famous parable

  417. of the Good Samaritan.

  418. Begins this way.

  419. A man was going down

  420. from Jerusalem

  421. to Jericho

  422. and he fell

  423. among robbers

  424. who stripped him

  425. and beat him

  426. and departed

  427. leaving him half dead.

  428. This is a very

  429. realistic parable.

  430. The journey

  431. from Jerusalem

  432. to Jericho

  433. includes what is called

  434. the passage of blood.

  435. It's called that

  436. because there were

  437. so many robberies

  438. and murders

  439. that took place

  440. on that road.

  441. The winding desert road

  442. going down

  443. from Jerusalem

  444. to Jericho

  445. was surrounded

  446. by caves

  447. which made

  448. ideal hideouts

  449. for robbers,

  450. highway robbers.

  451. And this man

  452. in the parable

  453. runs into such robbers

  454. and they steal

  455. his stuff

  456. and leave him

  457. half dead

  458. and this man

  459. is now fighting

  460. for his life.

  461. If no one

  462. comes to his rescue

  463. he will die.

  464. But what good luck

  465. it says in verse 31

  466. not by chance

  467. a priest

  468. was going down

  469. that road.

  470. A priest

  471. a minister

  472. at the temple

  473. of God.

  474. Surely this man

  475. of God

  476. will come to the aid

  477. of this dying man

  478. but in a surprising

  479. turn of events

  480. it says that the priest

  481. when he saw him

  482. he passed by

  483. on the other side.

  484. He intentionally

  485. avoids the man.

  486. Various reasons

  487. are possible

  488. but we're not told

  489. exactly what it is

  490. so we can't know

  491. for sure.

  492. Perhaps he's fearful

  493. that there are more robbers

  494. just like the ones

  495. that attack this man

  496. and they don't want to

  497. he doesn't want to risk

  498. going anywhere near there.

  499. Perhaps he thinks

  500. the man might be dead

  501. because he's half dead

  502. he looks dead

  503. and he doesn't want to

  504. risk ritual impurity

  505. by coming into contact

  506. with the corpse

  507. since he's a priest.

  508. Whatever the reason

  509. the priest doesn't want

  510. anything to do

  511. with this dying man.

  512. And verse 32 continues

  513. so likewise a Levite

  514. when he came to the place

  515. and saw him

  516. passed by

  517. on the other side.

  518. Moses' brother Aaron

  519. his family

  520. and their descendants

  521. had the exclusive right

  522. to be priests

  523. in the temple of God.

  524. But the rest

  525. of the members

  526. of the tribe of Levi

  527. to which Aaron belonged

  528. took on lesser responsibilities

  529. around the temple

  530. and functioned

  531. as basically

  532. assistance to the priests.

  533. So they were also privileged

  534. they were a privileged class

  535. of religious elites.

  536. But the result

  537. is likewise disappointing.

  538. The Levite did get

  539. a little closer

  540. than the priest.

  541. It says that he came

  542. to the place

  543. and saw him

  544. but just like the priest

  545. he passed by

  546. on the other side.

  547. And at verse 32

  548. comes the twist

  549. of the story.

  550. After the Jewish priest

  551. then a Jewish Levite

  552. you would expect

  553. simply a Jew

  554. a Jewish lay person.

  555. You'd expect

  556. kind of an anti-clergy story

  557. where a priest

  558. and a Levite

  559. had failed

  560. but this common

  561. faithful Jewish man

  562. comes by

  563. and does the right thing.

  564. You see

  565. it's not about

  566. your titles.

  567. It's about

  568. being faithful.

  569. That's the story

  570. you would expect.

  571. But instead

  572. it says

  573. a Samaritan.

  574. In the Greek

  575. the word Samaritan

  576. is awkwardly placed

  577. as the very first word

  578. of the sentence

  579. unlike the words

  580. priest and Levite

  581. earlier

  582. in the earlier

  583. preceding verses.

  584. It's fronted there

  585. for emphasis

  586. for shock value.

  587. This wasn't the case

  588. earlier

  589. but now

  590. after the priest

  591. goes by

  592. on the other side

  593. the Levite

  594. goes by on the other side

  595. they both

  596. it says

  597. they saw the man

  598. and then they

  599. walked by

  600. on the other side

  601. but a Samaritan

  602. what is a Samaritan

  603. doing in this

  604. Jewish parable?

  605. I mentioned

  606. last week

  607. briefly

  608. that we know

  609. from the gospel

  610. of John

  611. that there was

  612. really bad blood

  613. in history

  614. between Jews

  615. and the Samaritans.

  616. The Samaritans

  617. were a mixed race

  618. of Jews

  619. and Gentiles

  620. they were half

  621. half breeds

  622. as Jews would call them.

  623. Instead of worshipping

  624. at Mount Zion

  625. in Jerusalem

  626. they argued

  627. that true worship

  628. should be held

  629. at Mount Gerizim

  630. in Shechem.

  631. For these reasons

  632. Jews not only

  633. viewed

  634. these Samaritans

  635. as ethnic

  636. half breeds

  637. they also saw them

  638. as religious

  639. heretics

  640. their deviants.

  641. So this is the point

  642. where you would expect

  643. the hero of the story

  644. to come

  645. and resolve

  646. the tension

  647. that's been building up

  648. but out comes

  649. a Samaritan

  650. and the Samaritan

  651. goes the full lengths

  652. to care for this dying man.

  653. It was said

  654. of both the priest

  655. and Levi

  656. that they had seen him

  657. but they passed by

  658. but the Samaritan

  659. when he sees the man

  660. it says he had compassion.

  661. He went to him

  662. and bound up his wounds

  663. pouring on oil

  664. and wine.

  665. Then he set him

  666. on his own animal

  667. and brought him

  668. to an inn

  669. and took care of him.

  670. So it's unclear

  671. what kind of cloth

  672. he would have had

  673. available to bandage

  674. this man's wound.

  675. He had to use

  676. some from his own cloak

  677. or maybe the turban

  678. or a piece of

  679. the linen undergarment

  680. to bind up the wounds.

  681. He does that

  682. but as he does that

  683. he also treats the wound.

  684. He uses his own supplies.

  685. He uses the oil

  686. to soothe the wound.

  687. He uses the alcohol

  688. the wine

  689. to disinfect it.

  690. And the oil and wine

  691. would have been

  692. his own provisions

  693. for travel

  694. but yet he gives it up

  695. in order to serve this man.

  696. And then

  697. since the man

  698. is in no shape to walk

  699. he comes down

  700. his own animal

  701. probably a mule

  702. which means

  703. he would have to walk

  704. the rest of the way

  705. and then he brings

  706. this wounded man

  707. to an inn

  708. and continues

  709. to take care of him.

  710. As if that weren't enough

  711. most people would have

  712. could have left

  713. the man there

  714. and left

  715. and gone his way

  716. and never come back

  717. and people would have

  718. still praised him

  719. for being a good Samaritan.

  720. But he doesn't

  721. stop there.

  722. He says in verse 35

  723. the next day

  724. he stays overnight

  725. the next day

  726. he took out

  727. two denarii

  728. and gave them

  729. to the innkeeper

  730. saying

  731. take care of him

  732. and whatever more

  733. you spend

  734. I will repay you

  735. when I come back.

  736. Since the wounded man

  737. had just been robbed

  738. he has no money

  739. to pay his way.

  740. And so the Samaritan

  741. seeing that

  742. the innkeeper

  743. would be reluctant

  744. to care for a man

  745. who can't pay

  746. for his stay

  747. he pays

  748. two denarii

  749. up front

  750. that's the equivalent

  751. of two days worth

  752. of wages

  753. full days worth

  754. of wages

  755. which would have

  756. been enough

  757. to pay for about

  758. 24 days

  759. at this kind of inn

  760. in this day and age.

  761. But even that's not

  762. the limit of this

  763. Samaritan's generosity

  764. and hospitality

  765. he assures

  766. the innkeeper

  767. in verse 35

  768. take care of him

  769. and whatever more

  770. you spend

  771. I will repay you

  772. when I come back.

  773. Please don't

  774. discontinue your care

  775. for this man

  776. and if I don't return

  777. before the money

  778. I paid you

  779. runs out

  780. be assured

  781. that I will return

  782. don't expect

  783. anything from him

  784. I will guarantee

  785. your compensation

  786. personally

  787. take nothing

  788. from him

  789. take everything

  790. from me.

  791. And after that

  792. shocking twist

  793. to the story

  794. Jesus asks

  795. a very pointed

  796. question

  797. verse 36

  798. which of these

  799. three

  800. do you think

  801. proved to be

  802. a neighbor

  803. to the man

  804. who fell

  805. among the robbers

  806. and the proud

  807. Jewish lawyer

  808. can't bring himself

  809. to say the word

  810. Samaritan.

  811. He replies

  812. in a roundabout way

  813. verse 37

  814. that the one

  815. who showed him

  816. mercy

  817. and Jesus said

  818. to him

  819. you

  820. go

  821. and do

  822. likewise.

  823. verse 37

  824. can be translated

  825. more literally

  826. this way

  827. the one

  828. who did

  829. mercy

  830. it's the same

  831. word

  832. the word

  833. do

  834. the one

  835. who did

  836. mercy

  837. and Jesus

  838. said to him

  839. you go

  840. and do

  841. likewise

  842. there's an

  843. emphasis

  844. the repetition

  845. of the idea

  846. of doing

  847. and Jesus

  848. is driving

  849. home a point

  850. and notice

  851. how masterfully

  852. Jesus turns

  853. the lawyer's

  854. question around

  855. because what

  856. was the lawyer's

  857. initial question

  858. it was

  859. who is my

  860. neighbor

  861. he wanted

  862. to define

  863. the terms

  864. and delimit

  865. the concept

  866. of neighbor

  867. so that he

  868. can justify

  869. himself

  870. and say

  871. that he

  872. performed

  873. his minimal

  874. duty

  875. but Jesus

  876. shifts the

  877. focus

  878. from defining

  879. who it is

  880. to doing

  881. the word

  882. do has come

  883. up twice

  884. already

  885. in verse

  886. 25

  887. the lawyer

  888. asked

  889. what shall

  890. I do

  891. to inherit

  892. eternal

  893. life

  894. and Jesus

  895. said in

  896. verse 28

  897. you have

  898. answered

  899. correctly

  900. do this

  901. and you

  902. will live

  903. and here

  904. in verse

  905. 37

  906. he says

  907. follow the

  908. one

  909. example

  910. of the

  911. one

  912. who did

  913. mercy

  914. you go

  915. and do

  916. likewise

  917. instead of

  918. trying to

  919. qualify

  920. bible's

  921. demands

  922. on your

  923. life

  924. instead of

  925. trying to

  926. limit it

  927. confine it

  928. make it

  929. manageable

  930. focus on

  931. obeying it

  932. the real

  933. question is

  934. not

  935. who is

  936. my

  937. neighbor

  938. it's

  939. am I

  940. a neighbor

  941. don't

  942. ask who

  943. your

  944. neighbor

  945. is

  946. be a

  947. neighbor

  948. love

  949. and

  950. serve

  951. whomever

  952. you

  953. come

  954. across

  955. that has

  956. a need

  957. that you

  958. can

  959. meet

  960. your

  961. neighbor

  962. is not

  963. just

  964. your

  965. fellow

  966. countrymen

  967. your

  968. neighbor

  969. is not

  970. just

  971. your

  972. blood

  973. relatives

  974. your

  975. neighbor

  976. is not

  977. just

  978. those

  979. who

  980. share

  981. your

  982. ethnicity

  983. or race

  984. your

  985. neighbor

  986. is not

  987. just

  988. someone

  989. who

  990. shares

  991. your

  992. theological

  993. views

  994. or your

  995. political

  996. opinions

  997. your

  998. neighbor

  999. is not

  1000. just

  1001. the people

  1002. who

  1003. look

  1004. like

  1005. you

  1006. and

  1007. speak

  1008. like

  1009. you

  1010. your

  1011. neighbor

  1012. is not

  1013. the people

  1014. you like

  1015. the people

  1016. you love

  1017. to serve

  1018. it's

  1019. anyone

  1020. who has

  1021. a need

  1022. that you

  1023. can meet

  1024. that you

  1025. come across

  1026. and there's

  1027. a wider

  1028. lesson here

  1029. for Jesus

  1030. his disciples

  1031. as well

  1032. because

  1033. Jesus

  1034. has

  1035. repeatedly

  1036. up to

  1037. this

  1038. point

  1039. in chapter

  1040. 9 and

  1041. 10

  1042. told his

  1043. disciples

  1044. that

  1045. to be a

  1046. follower of

  1047. Jesus

  1048. is to

  1049. represent

  1050. Jesus

  1051. and since

  1052. Jesus

  1053. represents

  1054. God

  1055. the

  1056. father

  1057. they

  1058. too

  1059. as

  1060. disciples

  1061. of

  1062. Jesus

  1063. represent

  1064. God

  1065. himself

  1066. and

  1067. that's

  1068. why

  1069. he

  1070. said

  1071. in

  1072. Luke

  1073. 9

  1074. 48

  1075. and

  1076. here

  1077. and

  1078. also

  1079. in

  1080. Luke

  1081. 10

  1082. 16

  1083. the

  1084. one

  1085. who

  1086. hears

  1087. you

  1088. hears

  1089. me

  1090. and

  1091. the

  1092. one

  1093. who

  1094. rejects

  1095. you

  1096. rejects

  1097. me

  1098. and

  1099. the

  1100. child

  1101. of

  1102. God

  1103. the

  1104. disciple

  1105. of

  1106. Christ

  1107. by

  1108. virtue

  1109. of

  1110. his

  1111. or

  1112. her

  1113. identification

  1114. with

  1115. Jesus

  1116. by

  1117. virtue

  1118. of

  1119. their

  1120. union

  1121. with

  1122. Jesus

  1123. through

  1124. faith

  1125. carries

  1126. with

  1127. him

  1128. or

  1129. herself

  1130. the

  1131. dignity

  1132. and

  1133. authority

  1134. of

  1135. God

  1136. himself

  1137. and

  1138. that

  1139. means

  1140. by

  1141. implication

  1142. what

  1143. we

  1144. do

  1145. for

  1146. any

  1147. of

  1148. the

  1149. followers

  1150. of

  1151. Jesus

  1152. we

  1153. do

  1154. for

  1155. Jesus

  1156. himself

  1157. in

  1158. addition

  1159. to

  1160. that

  1161. wonderful

  1162. truth

  1163. Jesus

  1164. repeatedly

  1165. pronounced

  1166. fearful

  1167. judgment

  1168. on

  1169. those

  1170. who

  1171. reject

  1172. him

  1173. and

  1174. his

  1175. followers

  1176. he

  1177. taught

  1178. his

  1179. disciples

  1180. to

  1181. wipe

  1182. the

  1183. dust

  1184. off

  1185. their

  1186. feet

  1187. as

  1188. they

  1189. leave

  1190. towns

  1191. that

  1192. reject

  1193. them

  1194. and

  1195. their

  1196. message

  1197. as

  1198. a

  1199. sign

  1200. against

  1201. them

  1202. as

  1203. a

  1204. testimony

  1205. against

  1206. them

  1207. that

  1208. they

  1209. will

  1210. be

  1211. rejected

  1212. and

  1213. condemned

  1214. by

  1215. God

  1216. on

  1217. judgment

  1218. day

  1219. should

  1220. they

  1221. persist

  1222. in

  1223. their

  1224. stubborn

  1225. rejection

  1226. of

  1227. Christ

  1228. so

  1229. in

  1230. light

  1231. of

  1232. all

  1233. this

  1234. you

  1235. can

  1236. kind

  1237. of

  1238. see

  1239. why

  1240. the

  1241. disciples

  1242. might

  1243. have

  1244. a

  1245. misunderstanding

  1246. and

  1247. we

  1248. saw

  1249. their

  1250. misunderstanding

  1251. earlier

  1252. in chapter

  1253. 9

  1254. verses

  1255. 51

  1256. to

  1257. 55

  1258. when

  1259. they

  1260. came

  1261. to

  1262. a

  1263. Samaritan

  1264. village

  1265. they're at

  1266. a Samaritan

  1267. village

  1268. and they

  1269. reject

  1270. them

  1271. and the

  1272. disciples

  1273. are

  1274. understandably

  1275. upset

  1276. and they

  1277. asked

  1278. and they

  1279. but

  1280. Jesus

  1281. rebuked

  1282. them

  1283. and

  1284. this

  1285. parable

  1286. of the

  1287. good

  1288. Samaritan

  1289. serves

  1290. as a

  1291. corrective

  1292. to

  1293. them

  1294. yes

  1295. those

  1296. who

  1297. reject

  1298. Christ

  1299. and

  1300. his

  1301. disciples

  1302. will

  1303. face

  1304. judgment

  1305. but

  1306. that

  1307. will

  1308. be

  1309. at

  1310. Jesus

  1311. second

  1312. coming

  1313. and

  1314. not

  1315. his

  1316. first

  1317. coming

  1318. and

  1319. Jesus

  1320. comes

  1321. first

  1322. in

  1323. grace

  1324. to

  1325. save

  1326. and

  1327. then

  1328. he

  1329. will

  1330. come

  1331. again

  1332. a

  1333. second

  1334. time

  1335. in

  1336. glory

  1337. to

  1338. judge

  1339. but

  1340. for

  1341. those

  1342. who

  1343. live

  1344. between

  1345. those

  1346. two

  1347. comings

  1348. we

  1349. are

  1350. to

  1351. be

  1352. messengers

  1353. not

  1354. of

  1355. bad

  1356. news

  1357. but

  1358. of

  1359. the

  1360. good

  1361. news

  1362. of

  1363. Jesus

  1364. Christ

  1365. the

  1366. message

  1367. of

  1368. salvation

  1369. so

  1370. yes

  1371. we

  1372. are

  1373. to

  1374. love

  1375. and

  1376. serve

  1377. our

  1378. brothers

  1379. and

  1380. sisters

  1381. in

  1382. Christ

  1383. as

  1384. if

  1385. we're

  1386. serving

  1387. Christ

  1388. himself

  1389. and

  1390. we

  1391. would

  1392. but

  1393. because

  1394. they

  1395. represent

  1396. Jesus

  1397. but

  1398. this

  1399. does

  1400. not

  1401. mean

  1402. that

  1403. we

  1404. are

  1405. not

  1406. to

  1407. make

  1408. this

  1409. point

  1410. Jesus

  1411. intentionally

  1412. uses

  1413. a

  1414. priest

  1415. and

  1416. a

  1417. Levite

  1418. as

  1419. negative

  1420. examples

  1421. in

  1422. this

  1423. parable

  1424. because

  1425. if

  1426. anyone

  1427. in

  1428. this

  1429. culture

  1430. in

  1431. this

  1432. time

  1433. would

  1434. have

  1435. been

  1436. considered

  1437. lovers

  1438. of

  1439. God

  1440. it

  1441. would

  1442. have

  1443. been

  1444. the

  1445. priest

  1446. it

  1447. would

  1448. have

  1449. been

  1450. the

  1451. Levite

  1452. but

  1453. they

  1454. failed

  1455. to

  1456. observe

  1457. the

  1458. greatest

  1459. commandment

  1460. why

  1461. because

  1462. they

  1463. did

  1464. not

  1465. love

  1466. their

  1467. neighbor

  1468. as

  1469. themselves

  1470. Jesus

  1471. is

  1472. here

  1473. explicitly

  1474. rejecting

  1475. the

  1476. kind

  1477. of

  1478. mystical

  1479. spirituality

  1480. that

  1481. is

  1482. divorced

  1483. from

  1484. service

  1485. to

  1486. mankind

  1487. this

  1488. lawyer

  1489. had

  1490. devoted

  1491. his

  1492. life

  1493. to

  1494. studying

  1495. God's

  1496. word

  1497. his

  1498. laws

  1499. and

  1500. that's

  1501. excellent

  1502. and

  1503. we

  1504. should

  1505. all

  1506. strive

  1507. to

  1508. do

  1509. that

  1510. and

  1511. maybe

  1512. many

  1513. of

  1514. you

  1515. have

  1516. read

  1517. the

  1518. Bible

  1519. through

  1520. many

  1521. times

  1522. from

  1523. cover

  1524. to

  1525. cover

  1526. but

  1527. if

  1528. you

  1529. profess

  1530. to

  1531. love

  1532. God

  1533. but

  1534. your

  1535. love

  1536. for

  1537. God

  1538. is

  1539. not

  1540. evidenced

  1541. by

  1542. your

  1543. love

  1544. of

  1545. neighbor

  1546. then

  1547. your

  1548. love

  1549. of

  1550. God

  1551. and

  1552. love

  1553. of

  1554. neighbor

  1555. go

  1556. together

  1557. loving

  1558. our

  1559. neighbor

  1560. as

  1561. ourselves

  1562. is

  1563. a

  1564. necessary

  1565. expression

  1566. of

  1567. our

  1568. love

  1569. for

  1570. God

  1571. then

  1572. in

  1573. verses

  1574. 38

  1575. to

  1576. 42

  1577. Luke

  1578. gives

  1579. us

  1580. a

  1581. picture

  1582. of

  1583. the

  1584. opposite

  1585. imbalance

  1586. and

  1587. teaches

  1588. us

  1589. what

  1590. loving

  1591. God

  1592. with

  1593. our

  1594. whole

  1595. selves

  1596. looks

  1597. like

  1598. he

  1599. says

  1600. in

  1601. verses

  1602. 38

  1603. to

  1604. 39

  1605. read

  1606. with

  1607. me

  1608. now

  1609. as

  1610. they

  1611. went

  1612. on

  1613. their

  1614. way

  1615. Jesus

  1616. entered

  1617. a

  1618. village

  1619. and

  1620. a

  1621. woman

  1622. named

  1623. Martha

  1624. welcomed

  1625. him

  1626. into

  1627. her

  1628. house

  1629. and

  1630. she

  1631. had

  1632. a

  1633. sister

  1634. called

  1635. Mary

  1636. who

  1637. sat

  1638. at

  1639. the

  1640. Lord's

  1641. feet

  1642. and

  1643. listened

  1644. to

  1645. his

  1646. teaching

  1647. earlier

  1648. in

  1649. Luke

  1650. 8

  1651. we

  1652. saw

  1653. that

  1654. women

  1655. were

  1656. among

  1657. Jesus

  1658. wider

  1659. group

  1660. of

  1661. followers

  1662. which

  1663. would

  1664. have

  1665. been

  1666. shocking

  1667. in

  1668. this

  1669. day

  1670. and

  1671. age

  1672. and

  1673. here

  1674. we

  1675. see

  1676. an

  1677. even

  1678. more

  1679. explicit

  1680. statement

  1681. of

  1682. that

  1683. truth

  1684. Mary

  1685. sat

  1686. at

  1687. the

  1688. Lord's

  1689. feet

  1690. and

  1691. listened

  1692. to

  1693. this

  1694. teaching

  1695. this

  1696. is

  1697. the

  1698. language

  1699. of

  1700. discipleship

  1701. that

  1702. occurs

  1703. again

  1704. and

  1705. again

  1706. throughout

  1707. the

  1708. gospels

  1709. she

  1710. is

  1711. one

  1712. of

  1713. the

  1714. disciples

  1715. sitting

  1716. at

  1717. Jesus

  1718. feet

  1719. and

  1720. learning

  1721. from

  1722. him

  1723. his

  1724. followers

  1725. taught

  1726. men

  1727. and

  1728. women

  1729. are

  1730. heirs

  1731. of

  1732. the

  1733. heavenly

  1734. inheritance

  1735. in

  1736. Christ

  1737. Jesus

  1738. the

  1739. equality

  1740. of

  1741. men

  1742. and

  1743. women

  1744. that

  1745. our

  1746. culture

  1747. assumes

  1748. owes

  1749. its

  1750. existence

  1751. to

  1752. Christ

  1753. teaching

  1754. there

  1755. would

  1756. have

  1757. been

  1758. many

  1759. in

  1760. this

  1761. context

  1762. who

  1763. would

  1764. have

  1765. been

  1766. scandalized

  1767. by

  1768. Mary's

  1769. boldness

  1770. and

  1771. even

  1772. more

  1773. by

  1774. Jesus

  1775. acceptance

  1776. of

  1777. her

  1778. but

  1779. among

  1780. her

  1781. fiercest

  1782. critics

  1783. we

  1784. find

  1785. her

  1786. very

  1787. own

  1788. sister

  1789. Martha

  1790. it

  1791. says

  1792. in

  1793. verse

  1794. 40

  1795. that

  1796. unlike

  1797. Mary

  1798. who

  1799. sat

  1800. at

  1801. the

  1802. Lord's

  1803. feet

  1804. and

  1805. listened

  1806. to

  1807. his

  1808. teaching

  1809. Martha

  1810. was

  1811. distracted

  1812. with

  1813. much

  1814. serving

  1815. and

  1816. she

  1817. went

  1818. up

  1819. to

  1820. him

  1821. and

  1822. said

  1823. Lord

  1824. do

  1825. you

  1826. not

  1827. care

  1828. that

  1829. my

  1830. sister

  1831. has

  1832. left

  1833. me

  1834. to

  1835. serve

  1836. alone

  1837. tell

  1838. her

  1839. then

  1840. to

  1841. help

  1842. me

  1843. hosting

  1844. a

  1845. large

  1846. group

  1847. in

  1848. your

  1849. house

  1850. is

  1851. not

  1852. a

  1853. small

  1854. feat

  1855. many

  1856. of

  1857. you

  1858. guys

  1859. have

  1860. done

  1861. it

  1862. some

  1863. of

  1864. you

  1865. guys

  1866. do

  1867. it

  1868. probably

  1869. a little

  1870. too

  1871. frequently

  1872. we

  1873. don't

  1874. know how

  1875. large a crowd

  1876. is here

  1877. but at

  1878. the very

  1879. least

  1880. we could

  1881. assume

  1882. that

  1883. Jesus

  1884. and his

  1885. inner

  1886. circle

  1887. the 12

  1888. apostles

  1889. were present

  1890. so that's

  1891. at least

  1892. 13

  1893. guests

  1894. and

  1895. some

  1896. of you

  1897. have cooked

  1898. for a

  1899. group

  1900. that

  1901. size

  1902. before

  1903. and it's

  1904. a

  1905. difficult

  1906. work

  1907. a

  1908. former

  1909. seminary

  1910. professor

  1911. of mine

  1912. marveled

  1913. at this

  1914. kind

  1915. of

  1916. hospitality

  1917. he

  1918. said

  1919. he called

  1920. it a

  1921. minor

  1922. miracle

  1923. he said

  1924. a good

  1925. cook can

  1926. take

  1927. cold

  1928. food

  1929. and get

  1930. it into

  1931. the

  1932. refrigerator

  1933. at one

  1934. time

  1935. the hot

  1936. food

  1937. in the

  1938. stove

  1939. at another

  1940. time

  1941. and it

  1942. all comes

  1943. out at

  1944. the same

  1945. time

  1946. and everybody

  1947. has a

  1948. good

  1949. time

  1950. isn't that

  1951. amazing

  1952. but it

  1953. doesn't

  1954. always go

  1955. that

  1956. smoothly

  1957. some

  1958. of you

  1959. have

  1960. also

  1961. experienced

  1962. how

  1963. hard

  1964. it is

  1965. to

  1966. juggle

  1967. several

  1968. things

  1969. at once

  1970. in the

  1971. kitchen

  1972. by

  1973. yourself

  1974. oh no

  1975. the dough

  1976. is rising

  1977. a little

  1978. too much

  1979. that

  1980. that meat

  1981. is burning

  1982. in the

  1983. fire

  1984. that soup

  1985. is boiling

  1986. over

  1987. and you're

  1988. scurrying over

  1989. in a hurry

  1990. and trying to

  1991. take a plate

  1992. and then you

  1993. drop it of

  1994. course

  1995. because you're

  1996. in a hurry

  1997. and it

  1998. shatters

  1999. on the

  2000. ground

  2001. and you're

  2002. starting to

  2003. feel a little

  2004. bit

  2005. overwhelmed

  2006. Martha was

  2007. having one

  2008. of those

  2009. days

  2010. she's

  2011. overwhelmed

  2012. she's

  2013. distracted

  2014. and she

  2015. remembers

  2016. wait I

  2017. have a

  2018. sister

  2019. Mary

  2020. Mary

  2021. doesn't

  2022. respond

  2023. so she

  2024. sneaks over

  2025. to the

  2026. living room

  2027. takes a

  2028. peek

  2029. and behold

  2030. you should

  2031. be here

  2032. this is

  2033. your place

  2034. where she's

  2035. sitting

  2036. at the

  2037. feet

  2038. of the

  2039. Lord

  2040. Jesus

  2041. listening

  2042. to him

  2043. Martha

  2044. is slaving

  2045. away in

  2046. the kitchen

  2047. and here's

  2048. Mary just

  2049. sitting

  2050. doing

  2051. nothing

  2052. to make

  2053. this party

  2054. happen

  2055. and so

  2056. Mary is

  2057. indignant

  2058. she loses

  2059. it when

  2060. she sees

  2061. Mary

  2062. notice she

  2063. doesn't even

  2064. go to

  2065. Mary

  2066. discreetly

  2067. and be

  2068. like hey

  2069. Mary can

  2070. you come

  2071. over here

  2072. and she

  2073. goes straight

  2074. to Jesus

  2075. right up

  2076. to him

  2077. and she

  2078. says this

  2079. to Jesus

  2080. Lord

  2081. do you

  2082. not care

  2083. that my

  2084. sister has

  2085. left me

  2086. to serve

  2087. alone

  2088. tell her

  2089. then to

  2090. help

  2091. me

  2092. do you

  2093. feel

  2094. Martha's

  2095. frustration

  2096. here

  2097. because I

  2098. do

  2099. I have

  2100. a lot

  2101. of sympathy

  2102. for Martha

  2103. I think

  2104. many of

  2105. you do

  2106. too

  2107. I think

  2108. Cambridge

  2109. is a

  2110. city

  2111. full of

  2112. Martha's

  2113. I'm

  2114. one of

  2115. them

  2116. there's

  2117. no doubt

  2118. that Martha

  2119. felt that

  2120. Jesus

  2121. would be

  2122. sympathetic

  2123. to her

  2124. concern

  2125. don't you

  2126. care

  2127. Jesus

  2128. she knew

  2129. Jesus

  2130. cared for

  2131. her

  2132. so she

  2133. asked

  2134. Jesus

  2135. to send

  2136. Mary

  2137. back to

  2138. the

  2139. kitchen

  2140. to help

  2141. her

  2142. fully

  2143. expecting

  2144. that

  2145. Mary

  2146. would

  2147. listen

  2148. to

  2149. Jesus

  2150. but

  2151. Jesus

  2152. answer

  2153. is as

  2154. firm

  2155. as it

  2156. is

  2157. gracious

  2158. he

  2159. says

  2160. in

  2161. verses

  2162. 41

  2163. to

  2164. 42

  2165. Martha

  2166. Martha

  2167. you

  2168. are

  2529. Jesus

  2548. in

  2549. Luke

  2550. 10

  2551. 22

  2552. Jesus

  2553. said

  2554. all

  2555. things

  2556. have

  2557. been

  2558. handed

  2559. over

  2560. to

  2562. by

  2563. my

  2565. and

  2566. no

  2576. or

  2577. who

  2578. the

  2579. father

  2580. is

  2581. except

  2582. the

  2583. son

  2584. and

  2585. anyone

  2586. to

  2587. whom

  2588. the

  2589. son

  2590. chooses

  2591. to

  2592. reveal

  2593. him

  2594. Jesus

  2595. is

  2596. the

  2597. son

  2598. of

  2599. God

  2600. and

  2601. it's

  2602. his

  2603. exclusive

  2607. God

  2608. the

  2609. father

  2610. to

  2611. us

  2612. and

  2613. therefore

  2614. we

  2615. are

  2616. to

  2617. sit

  2618. at

  2619. his

  2620. feet

  2621. and

  2622. listen

  2623. to

  2624. him

  2625. Jesus

  2626. said

  2627. to

  2628. the

  2630. that

  2631. if

  2632. we

  2633. love

  2634. God

  2635. with

  2636. our

  2637. whole

  2638. selves

  2639. and

  2640. love

  2641. our

  2642. neighbor

  2643. as

  2644. ourselves

  2645. that

  2646. we

  2647. would

  2648. inherit

  2649. eternal

  2650. life

  2651. this

  2652. is

  2653. not

  2654. a

  2655. form

  2656. of

  2657. works

  2658. righteousness

  2659. that

  2660. if

  2661. we

  2662. will

  2663. be

  2664. saved

  2665. by

  2666. the

  2667. good

  2669. that

  2670. we

  2671. do

  2672. we're

  2673. saved

  2674. by

  2675. the

  2676. grace

  2677. of

  2678. God

  2679. and

  2680. here's

  2681. how

  2682. those

  2683. two

  2684. work

  2685. together

  2686. because

  2687. loving

  2688. God

  2689. with

  2690. our

  2691. whole

  2692. selves

  2693. is

  2694. an

  2695. expression

  2696. of

  2697. and

  2698. it's

  2699. an

  2700. entailment

  2701. of

  2702. listening

  2703. to

  2704. Jesus

  2705. and

  2706. following

  2707. him

  2708. that's

  2709. why

  2710. 1st

  2711. John

  2712. 4

  2713. 15

  2714. 16

  2715. compares

  2716. them

  2717. this

  2718. way

  2719. whoever

  2720. confesses

  2721. that

  2722. Jesus

  2723. is

  2724. the

  2725. son

  2726. of

  2727. God

  2728. God

  2729. abides

  2730. in

  2731. him

  2732. and

  2733. he

  2734. in

  2735. God

  2736. so

  2737. we

  2738. have

  2739. come

  2740. to

  2741. know

  2742. and

  2743. to

  2744. believe

  2745. the

  2746. love

  2747. that

  2748. God

  2749. has

  2750. for

  2751. us

  2752. God

  2753. is

  2754. love

  2755. and

  2756. whoever

  2757. abides

  2758. in

  2759. love

  2760. abides

  2761. in

  2762. God

  2763. abides

  2764. in

  2765. him

  2766. if

  2767. we

  2768. confess

  2769. Jesus

  2770. then

  2771. God

  2772. abides

  2773. in

  2774. us

  2775. if

  2776. we

  2777. love

  2778. God

  2779. then

  2780. God

  2781. abides

  2782. in

  2783. us

  2784. and

  2785. these

  2786. are

  2787. parallel

  2788. statements

  2789. because

  2790. Jesus

  2791. is

  2792. God's

  2793. chosen

  2794. representative

  2795. and

  2796. to

  2797. believe

  2798. in

  2799. him

  2800. and

  2801. to

  2802. follow

  2803. him

  2804. is

  2805. to

  2806. love

  2807. God

  2808. and

  2809. we

  2810. have

  2811. all

  2812. failed

  2813. in

  2814. this

  2815. regard

  2816. to

  2817. love

  2818. God

  2819. with

  2820. our

  2821. whole

  2822. selves

  2823. and

  2824. to

  2825. love

  2826. our

  2827. neighbor

  2828. as

  2829. ourselves

  2830. and

  2831. we

  2832. were

  2833. therefore

  2834. cut off

  2835. forever

  2836. from

  2837. the

  2838. prospect

  2839. of

  2840. inheriting

  2841. eternal

  2842. life

  2843. but

  2844. that's

  2845. why

  2846. God

  2847. the

  2848. father

  2849. sent

  2850. his

  2851. only

  2852. son

  2853. Jesus

  2854. to

  2855. die

  2856. for

  2857. us

  2858. to

  2859. save

  2860. us

  2861. so

  2862. that

  2863. he

  2864. might

  2865. represent

  2866. us

  2867. so

  2868. that

  2869. we

  2870. don't

  2871. stand

  2872. for

  2873. ourselves

  2874. in

  2875. the

  2876. court

  2877. of

  2878. God's

  2879. judgment

  2880. but

  2881. that

  2882. Jesus

  2883. might

  2884. stand

  2885. for

  2886. us

  2887. because

  2888. Jesus

  2889. in

  2890. his

  2891. life

  2892. he

  2893. said

  2894. he

  2895. obeyed

  2896. his

  2897. father

  2898. and

  2899. loved

  2900. his

  2901. father

  2902. perfectly

  2903. that's

  2904. what

  2905. we

  2906. should

  2907. have

  2908. done

  2909. but

  2910. we

  2911. did

  2912. not

  2913. love

  2914. him

  2915. perfectly

  2916. but

  2917. Jesus

  2918. did

  2919. but

  2920. even

  2921. though

  2922. he

  2923. obeyed

  2924. perfectly

  2925. he

  2926. loved

  2927. God

  2928. perfectly

  2929. he

  2930. died

  2931. he

  2932. didn't

  2933. need

  2934. to

  2935. die

  2936. he

  2937. was

  2938. the

  2939. one

  2940. human

  2941. being

  2942. that

  2943. didn't

  2944. need

  2945. to

  2946. die

  2947. but

  2948. he

  2949. died

  2950. so

  2951. that

  2952. he

  2953. might

  2954. take

  2955. our

  2956. place

  2957. because

  2958. that's

  2959. what

  2960. we

  2961. deserved

  2962. and

  2963. he

  2964. was

  2965. raised

  2966. from

  2967. the

  2968. dead

  2969. to

  2970. make

  2971. us

  2972. alive

  2973. in

  2974. him

  2975. again

  2976. and

  2977. he

  2978. fills

  2979. us

  2980. with

  2981. the

  2982. very

  2983. living

  2984. spirit

  2985. of

  2986. God

  2987. so

  2988. that

  2989. we

  2990. might

  2991. inherit

  2992. eternal

  2993. life

  2994. and

  2995. so

  2996. that

  2997. in

  2998. this

  2999. life

  3000. even

  3001. though

  3002. imperfectly

  3003. we

  3004. might

  3005. truly

  3006. love

  3007. him

  3008. with

  3009. our

  3010. whole

  3011. selves

  3012. and

  3013. love

  3014. our

  3015. neighbor

  3016. as

  3017. ourselves

  3018. that's

  3019. the

  3020. good

  3021. news

  3022. of

  3023. Jesus

  3024. Christ

  3025. that's

  3026. the

  3027. word

  3028. of

  3029. Christ

  3030. that

  3031. we

  3032. have

  3033. to

  3034. listen

  3035. to

  3036. the

  3037. parable

  3038. of

  3039. the

  3040. good

  3041. Samaritan

  3042. rejected

  3043. the

  3044. idea

  3045. that

  3046. we

  3047. could

  3048. love

  3049. God

  3050. without

  3051. loving

  3052. our

  3053. neighbors

  3054. the

  3055. story

  3056. of

  3057. Martha

  3058. and

  3059. Mary

  3060. teaches

  3061. us

  3062. not

  3063. to

  3064. neglect

  3065. the

  3066. love

  3067. of

  3068. God

  3069. for

  3070. the

  3071. love

  3072. and

  3073. service

  3074. of

  3075. our

  3076. neighbors

  3077. and

  3078. there's

  3079. an

  3080. order

  3081. and

  3082. a

  3083. priority

  3084. to

  3085. that

  3086. hospitality

  3087. is

  3088. not a

  3089. light

  3090. thing

  3091. in

  3092. the

  3093. ancient

  3094. world

  3095. it

  3096. was

  3097. prized

  3098. very

  3099. highly

  3100. in

  3101. fact

  3102. being

  3103. hospitable

  3104. is

  3105. a

  3106. consistent

  3107. biblical

  3108. requirement

  3109. for

  3110. an

  3111. elder

  3112. a

  3113. pastor

  3114. of

  3115. a

  3116. church

  3117. but

  3118. even

  3119. serving

  3120. others

  3121. must

  3122. not

  3123. displace

  3124. the

  3125. priority

  3126. of

  3127. listening

  3128. to

  3129. God

  3130. and

  3131. his

  3132. word

  3133. verse

  3134. 40

  3135. says

  3136. that

  3137. Martha

  3138. was

  3139. distracted

  3140. with

  3141. much

  3142. serving

  3143. the

  3144. word

  3145. serve

  3146. is

  3147. the

  3148. same

  3149. Greek

  3150. word

  3151. that

  3152. also

  3153. means

  3154. to

  3155. minister

  3156. it's

  3157. the

  3158. word

  3159. that

  3160. sometimes

  3161. gets

  3162. translated

  3163. as

  3164. deacon

  3165. ministry

  3166. is

  3167. a

  3168. good

  3169. thing

  3170. serving

  3171. is

  3172. a

  3173. good

  3174. thing

  3175. but

  3176. if

  3177. it

  3178. leads

  3179. us

  3180. to

  3181. be

  3182. distracted

  3183. with

  3184. much

  3185. serving

  3186. if

  3187. it

  3188. makes

  3189. us

  3190. anxious

  3191. and

  3192. troubled

  3193. about

  3194. many

  3195. things

  3196. these

  3197. are

  3198. warning

  3199. signs

  3200. that

  3201. we

  3202. are

  3203. losing

  3204. sight

  3205. of

  3206. what

  3207. is

  3208. most

  3209. important

  3210. and

  3211. I

  3212. say

  3213. this

  3214. we

  3215. have

  3216. a

  3217. church

  3218. full

  3219. of

  3220. very

  3221. hard

  3222. working

  3223. servants

  3224. with

  3225. amazing

  3226. deacons

  3227. in our

  3228. church

  3229. but

  3230. I

  3231. don't

  3232. want

  3233. the

  3234. busyness

  3235. of

  3236. our

  3237. service

  3238. to

  3239. distract

  3240. us

  3241. from

  3242. listening

  3243. to

  3244. Jesus

  3245. it's

  3246. easy

  3247. for

  3248. us

  3249. as

  3250. a

  3251. church

  3252. to

  3253. give

  3254. in

  3255. to

  3256. the

  3257. idolatry

  3258. of

  3259. more

  3260. let's

  3261. do

  3262. more

  3263. let's

  3264. have

  3265. more

  3266. more

  3267. programs

  3268. more

  3269. ministries

  3270. more

  3271. people

  3272. but

  3273. sometimes

  3274. less

  3275. is

  3276. more

  3277. and

  3278. if

  3279. there

  3280. are

  3281. ways

  3282. to

  3283. simplify

  3284. our

  3285. gatherings

  3286. so

  3287. that

  3288. more

  3289. people

  3290. can

  3291. be

  3292. attentive

  3293. to

  3294. God's

  3295. word

  3296. I

  3297. think

  3298. we

  3299. should

  3300. strive

  3301. for

  3302. that

  3303. so

  3304. many

  3305. of

  3306. us

  3307. work

  3308. ourselves

  3309. down

  3310. to

  3311. the

  3312. bone

  3313. work

  3314. work

  3315. work

  3316. serve

  3317. and

  3318. serve

  3319. and

  3320. serve

  3321. as

  3322. if

  3323. our

  3324. validation

  3325. before

  3326. the

  3327. eyes

  3328. of

  3329. God

  3330. depend

  3331. on

  3332. that

  3333. performance

  3334. that

  3335. success

  3336. as if

  3337. we're

  3338. really

  3339. convinced

  3340. that

  3341. God

  3342. needs

  3343. us

  3344. God

  3345. does

  3346. not

  3347. need

  3348. us

  3349. he

  3350. can

  3351. raise

  3352. up

  3353. rocks

  3354. to

  3355. sing

  3356. his

  3357. praises

  3358. if

  3359. he

  3360. wanted

  3361. to

  3362. it

  3363. says

  3364. in

  3365. Luke

  3366. 19

  3367. 40

  3368. he

  3369. can

  3370. accomplish

  3371. his

  3372. sovereign

  3373. purposes

  3374. without

  3375. us

  3376. but

  3377. he

  3378. chose

  3379. to

  3380. save

  3381. us

  3382. because

  3383. he

  3384. loved

  3385. us

  3386. we

  3387. are

  3388. not

  3389. his

  3390. hired

  3391. hands

  3392. we

  3393. are

  3394. his

  3395. children

  3396. Jesus

  3397. said

  3398. I

  3399. do

  3400. not

  3401. call

  3402. you

  3403. my

  3404. servants

  3405. I

  3406. call

  3407. you

  3408. my

  3409. friends

  3410. so

  3411. are

  3412. you

  3413. spending

  3414. time

  3415. at

  3416. his

  3417. feet

  3418. are

  3419. you

  3420. spending

  3421. time

  3422. in

  3423. his

  3424. presence

  3425. do

  3426. you

  3427. listen

  3428. to

  3429. him

  3430. through

  3431. the

  3432. reading

  3433. of

  3434. his

  3435. word

  3436. do

  3437. you

  3438. talk

  3439. to

  3440. him

  3441. through

  3442. prayer

  3443. do

  3444. you

  3445. love

  3446. him

  3447. with

  3448. your

  3449. heart

  3450. soul

  3451. mind

  3452. and

  3453. strength

  3454. and

  3455. I

  3456. don't

  3457. mean

  3458. that

  3459. just

  3460. we

  3461. automatically

  3462. because

  3463. we

  3464. live

  3465. in

  3466. the

  3467. United

  3468. States

  3469. of

  3470. America

  3471. we

  3472. automatically

  3473. understand

  3474. that

  3475. to

  3476. mean

  3477. individually

  3478. personal

  3479. devotion

  3480. time

  3481. personal

  3482. prayer

  3483. time

  3484. in

  3485. fact

  3486. most

  3487. of

  3488. the

  3489. time

  3490. those

  3491. kinds

  3492. of

  3493. commands

  3494. are

  3495. given

  3496. in

  3497. scripture

  3498. it's

  3499. corporate

  3500. even

  3501. here

  3502. Mary

  3503. is

  3504. sitting

  3505. in

  3506. the

  3507. group

  3508. of

  3509. disciples

  3510. among

  3511. the

  3512. disciples

  3513. at

  3514. the

  3515. feet

  3516. of

  3517. Jesus

  3518. do

  3519. you

  3520. prioritize

  3521. that

  3522. time

  3523. because

  3524. unless

  3525. our

  3526. hearts

  3527. are

  3528. pulsating

  3529. with

  3530. the

  3531. love

  3532. of

  3533. God

  3534. you

  3535. cannot

  3536. love

  3537. your

  3538. neighbor

  3539. as

  3540. yourself

  3541. because

  3542. unless

  3543. you

  3544. have

  3545. listened

  3546. to

  3547. the

  3548. word

  3549. of

  3550. God

  3551. you

  3552. cannot

  3553. rightly

  3554. do

  3555. the

  3556. works

  3557. of

  3558. God

  3559. because

  3560. unless

  3561. you

  3562. have

  3563. been

  3564. ministered

  3565. to

  3566. by

  3567. God

  3568. you

  3569. cannot

  3570. minister

  3571. for

  3572. God

  3573. we

  3574. have

  3575. to

  3576. love

  3577. God

  3578. with

  3579. our

  3580. whole

  3581. selves

  3582. love

  3583. our

  3584. neighbor

  3585. as

  3586. ourselves

  3587. brothers

  3588. and

  3589. sisters

  3590. I

  3591. want

  3592. you

  3593. to

  3594. feel

  3595. freedom

  3596. and

  3597. release

  3598. from

  3599. this

  3600. liberating

  3601. truth

  3602. because

  3603. you

  3604. don't

  3605. need

  3606. to

  3607. be

  3608. busy

  3609. in

  3610. yourself

  3611. trying

  3612. to

  3613. prove

  3614. yourself

  3615. to

  3616. the

  3617. Lord

  3618. you

  3619. don't

  3620. need

  3621. to

  3622. be

  3623. anxious

  3624. and

  3625. troubled

  3626. for

  3627. many

  3628. things

  3629. you

  3630. don't

  3631. need

  3632. to

  3633. be

  3634. distracted

  3635. with

  3636. much

  3637. serving

  3638. because

  3639. the

  3640. hard

  3641. work

  3642. of

  3643. being

  3644. accepted

  3645. by

  3646. God

  3647. the

  3648. hard

  3649. work

  3650. of

  3651. being

  3652. able

  3653. to

  3654. be

  3655. admitted

  3656. to

  3657. his

  3658. presence

  3659. that

  3660. hard

  3661. work

  3662. has

  3663. been

  3664. done

  3665. by

  3666. Jesus

  3667. on

  3668. the

  3669. cross

  3670. and

  3671. because

  3672. he

  3673. said

  3674. it

  3675. is

  3676. finished

  3677. we

  3678. can

  3679. now

  3680. sit

  3681. at

  3682. his

  3683. feet

  3684. we

  3685. can

  3686. listen

  3687. to

  3688. him

  3689. here

  3690. to

  3691. on

  3692. his

  3693. them
