  1. to them, which of you who has a friend will go to him at midnight and say to him, friend,

  2. lend me three loaves for a friend of mine has arrived on a journey and I have nothing to

  3. set before him.

  4. And he will answer from within, do not bother me.

  5. The door is now shut and my children are with me in bed.

  6. I cannot get up and give you anything.

  7. I tell you, though he will not get up and give him anything because he is his friend,

  8. yet because of his impudence, he will rise and give him whatever he needs.

  9. And I tell you, ask and it will be given to you.

  10. Seek and you will find.

  11. Knock and it will be opened to you.

  12. For everyone who asks, receives.

  13. And the one who seeks, finds.

  14. And to the one who knocks, it will be opened.

  15. What father among you, if his son asks for a fish, will instead of a fish give him a serpent?

  16. Or if he asks for an egg, will give him a scorpion?

  17. If you then, who are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children,

  18. how much more will the heavenly father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him?

  19. This is God's authoritative word.

  20. I have never in my life met a Christian who is stagnant, stuck,

  21. perhaps even backsliding and beset with many sins,

  22. that spends much time in prayer.

  23. Other pastors have made the same observation.

  24. 19th century Anglican pastor J.C. Ryle puts it this way.

  25. What is the reason that some believers are so much brighter and holier than others?

  26. I believe the difference in 19 cases out of 20 arises from different habits about private prayer.

  27. I believe that those who are not eminently holy pray little.

  28. And those who are eminently holy pray much.

  29. Most believers theoretically acknowledge the importance of prayer,

  30. but functionally we disavow its importance by the lack of prayer.

  31. Many of us know how prayer works, but we don't quite believe that it really works.

  32. Why should we pray?

  33. How should we pray?

  34. And Jesus teaches us in this passage that we should pray boldly to God

  35. because he is our heavenly father who is gracious to answer.

  36. And we'll look at that in two parts.

  37. First, how we should pray in verses 1 to 4

  38. and why we should pray in verses 5 to 13.

  39. Chapter 11 begins with these words,

  40. Now Jesus was praying in a certain place.

  41. More than any other gospel writer, Luke emphasizes the importance of prayer

  42. as we've seen over and over again throughout this book.

  43. In this gospel, every time before something happens that's very important,

  44. Jesus is always seen praying.

  45. After prayer, it was after prayer that Jesus was baptized

  46. and the Spirit descended on him, anointed him,

  47. and the voice of God the Father spoke,

  48. affirming him as God's beloved son.

  49. In Luke chapter 3.

    Luke 3 chapter mention

  50. After praying all night, it says Jesus chose his 12 disciples

  51. who will become the apostles of the church, Luke chapter 6.

    Luke 6 chapter mention

  52. After he prayed, Peter made the breakthrough confession

  53. that Jesus is the Messiah, the Christ of God.

  54. And after prayer, Jesus was transfigured on the mountain

  55. with the dazzling glory of his true sonship of God.

  56. And then it's after prayer, here he says again,

  57. Jesus was praying in a certain place.

  58. That's a signal to us as we're reading this

  59. that something significant is about to happen.

  60. And what follows is Jesus' teaching of his disciples

  61. on how to pray and why they should pray.

  62. In Luke 10, if you recall, Jesus sent out 72 of his disciples

  63. and they proclaimed the kingdom of God

  64. and they healed the sick.

  65. They returned triumphantly to Jesus saying,

  66. even the demons are subject to us in your name.

  67. But even these disciples who have experienced already

  68. so much of God's power and so much of God's authority,

  69. even after they have experienced so much ministerial success,

  70. they see in Jesus something that they still lack.

  71. They see in Jesus' habit of prayer

  72. something that they still must learn.

  73. They see that Jesus' authority, his power, his character,

  74. his love flow from his communion with God in prayer.

  75. And so in verse 1, they ask Jesus,

  76. they wait till he's finished.

  77. And when Jesus finished, one of his disciples said to him,

  78. Lord, teach us to pray as John taught his disciples.

  79. This is the only place in the Gospels

  80. where the disciples make such a direct request of Jesus

  81. to teach them something.

  82. They have been speaking to men throughout their ministry,

  83. but they want to now learn to speak to God as Jesus did.

  84. And so Jesus responds to them in verse 2,

  85. and he said to them,

  86. when you pray, say.

  87. So that phrase, when you pray,

  88. means when we pray, this is how we should pray.

  89. Jesus is setting the course,

  90. the direction for all of our future prayers.

  91. And that's why churches for 2,000 years

  92. have used this prayer, the Lord's Prayer,

  93. as a part of their worship service

  94. and to recite it during their worship service.

  95. And it's not wrong to use the Lord's Prayer in that way.

  96. But I do want to say this.

  97. We need to be careful that praying the Lord's Prayer

  98. does not become this mindless rote activity.

  99. In Matthew 15a, Jesus denounces the Pharisees

  100. by quoting Isaiah,

  101. this people honors me with their lips,

  102. but their heart is far from me.

  103. God will not be fooled by empty lip service.

  104. And likewise, he will not listen to prayers

  105. that have form but no substance.

  106. Prayers that have a lot of words but no heart,

  107. no faith.

  108. And by definition,

  109. rote learning is based on repetition, right?

  110. It's not based on comprehension necessarily.

  111. You can repeat something by rote

  112. without giving any thought at all

  113. to what you are saying

  114. and to what its meaning is.

  115. But being able to rattle off a prayer

  116. from memory is not enough.

  117. We need to be able to understand it

  118. and believe it.

  119. And we can see that in the fact

  120. that God's given us two different versions

  121. of the Lord's Prayer.

  122. One here in Luke chapter 11

    Luke 11 chapter mention

  123. and another one in Matthew 6.

  124. There are overlaps

  125. and the themes are very consistent and similar,

  126. but they're not identical in their wording.

  127. This shows us that what's critical

  128. is not the exact words you say here,

  129. but the themes, the subject matter,

  130. how we are to approach God.

  131. And so this Lord's Prayer

  132. is not kind of a magical formula

  133. or an incantation that you utter

  134. word for word in order to be effective.

  135. Jesus is not teaching us

  136. what exactly to say every time we pray,

  137. but he's teaching us how to pray.

  138. This is the pattern,

  139. a model that we are to follow.

  140. So let's look at the prayer itself

  141. in verses two to four.

  142. It has a very simple structure.

  143. It begins with an address of God,

  144. Father,

  145. followed by two second person declarations

  146. that pertain to God.

  147. Hallowed be your name,

  148. your kingdom come.

  149. And then those declarations,

  150. those requests are then followed

  151. by three first person plural supplications

  152. that pertain to us as God's people.

  153. Give us each day our daily bread

  154. and forgive us our sins.

  155. For we ourselves forgive everyone

  156. who is indebted to us

  157. and lead us not into temptation.

  158. Notice that there isn't a single I

  159. in this prayer.

  160. This doesn't mean that we are not allowed

  161. to pray for ourselves as individuals,

  162. but it does highlight the importance

  163. of praying to God as a community.

  164. Even when we pray alone in our prayer closets,

  165. we speak to God as members of the family of God.

  166. Whenever we address God as Father,

  167. we also remember the fact

  168. that by virtue of our union with God,

  169. union with Christ,

  170. and adoption into God the Father's family,

  171. we are united also to our brothers

  172. and sisters in Christ.

  173. So our prayers are always,

  174. have a communal nature.

  175. And that's the first feature of this prayer.

  176. We have to address God as Father.

  177. A Father is, of course, an authority figure.

  178. So there should be an appropriate reverence for God

  179. as we approach Him in prayer.

  180. But a Father, the word is also an endearing term.

  181. It's a relational term.

  182. So there's a sense of intimacy

  183. that comes with this as well.

  184. And this, of course, implies that

  185. if you do not have God as your Father,

  186. then you can't pray to Him

  187. and address Him as your Father.

  188. Because in a general sense,

  189. yes, it's true that all people,

  190. Christians and non-Christians,

  191. are offspring of God.

  192. In the sense that we've all been created by Him.

  193. So Paul uses it,

  194. talks about it in that sense in Acts 17,

  195. when he's addressing non-Christians,

  196. he says, we are indeed His offspring.

  197. But there is a special sense

  198. in which only Christians,

  199. those who confess Jesus Christ as their Lord,

  200. are the children of God.

  201. And that's the sense in which we address God

  202. in our prayers as Father.

  203. That's why it says

  204. in John 1, verses 12-13,

    John 1:12–13

  205. but to all who did receive Him,

  206. who believed in His name,

  207. that's Jesus' name,

  208. He gave the right to become children of God,

  209. who were born not of blood,

  210. nor of the will of the flesh,

  211. nor of the will of man,

  212. but of God.

  213. Only those who believe in Jesus Christ

  214. for salvation

  215. are given the right to become

  216. the children of God.

  217. Scripture speaks repeatedly of the fact

  218. that God does not hear the prayers

  219. of the wicked.

  220. Isaiah 59, 1-2,

  221. Behold, the Lord's hand is not shortened

  222. that He cannot save,

  223. or His ear dulled that He cannot hear.

  224. But your iniquities have made a separation

  225. between you and your God,

  226. and your sins have hidden His face from you

  227. so that He does not hear.

  228. It's our sins that separate us from God

  229. so that He does not hear.

  230. If you are not yet a follower of Jesus Christ,

  231. you do not have this access to God the Father,

  232. because you have been separated from Him

  233. by your sins.

  234. But there is one prayer

  235. that you still yet can pray,

  236. and that's the prayer

  237. that God will always hear and answer,

  238. and that's the prayer

  239. of your repentance of sin

  240. and your faith in Jesus Christ.

  241. It's the prayer for surrender to God

  242. and your dependence on God for salvation.

  243. In the Gospel of Luke,

  244. we see two prominent examples of prayers

  245. that are uttered by unbelievers,

  246. those who do not believe in Jesus yet.

  247. In Luke 18,

  248. the tax collector,

  249. who is keenly aware of his own sinfulness

  250. and unworthiness before God,

  251. he says,

  252. Standing far off,

  253. he would not even lift his eyes to heaven

  254. because he did not feel worthy,

  255. but he beat his breast saying,

  256. God, be merciful to me,

  257. a sinner.

  258. And Jesus says,

  259. I tell you,

  260. the man went down to his house justified.

  261. He heard that prayer of

  262. someone who did not know God yet.

  263. Similarly, in Luke 23, 42,

  264. the thief who is being crucified

  265. next to Jesus on the cross

  266. for his crimes,

  267. says to Jesus,

  268. Remember me when you come into your kingdom.

  269. That's the prayer of surrender,

  270. dependence on Jesus for salvation.

  271. And Jesus replies,

  272. Truly I say to you,

  273. today you will be with me in paradise.

  274. If you come to Jesus like that,

  275. with that prayer of surrender and dependence,

  276. he will not turn you away.

  277. That's the prayer I urge all of you

  278. who do not yet know Jesus Christ to pray,

  279. even today.

  280. It's an invitation.

  281. It's an invitation.

  282. Then when you pray that prayer,

  283. give your life to God,

  284. and you give a credible profession of faith

  285. that you truly are a follower of Christ,

  286. that's when you are baptized

  287. into the body of Christ

  288. and become a member of a local church.

  289. And when that happens to you,

  290. you're born again,

  291. the Spirit of God indwells you,

  292. and you can truly say to God,

  293. my Father,

  294. our Father in heaven.

  295. And for those of you already

  296. call God your Father,

  297. this doesn't mean that we can never pray

  298. directly to God the Son

  299. or to God the Holy Spirit.

  300. We see examples of people

  301. in the New Testament

  302. praying to the Lord Jesus directly

  303. in Acts 1, 24, 759.

  304. And even though there's no recorded prayers

  305. addressed directly to the Holy Spirit,

  306. we do see examples of prayer

  307. addressed to the Holy Spirit

  308. throughout church history.

  309. But there is a pattern,

  310. a dominant biblical pattern.

  311. And we see that again and again

  312. throughout Scripture.

  313. And you can see this in John 16.

  314. In that day you will ask nothing of me.

  315. Truly, truly, I say to you,

  316. whatever you ask of the Father

  317. in my name,

  318. He will give it to you.

  319. Until now,

  320. you have asked nothing in my name.

  321. Ask and you will receive

  322. that your joy may be full.

  323. So we are to pray to God the Father

  324. in the name of Jesus Christ the Son.

  325. To pray in the name of Jesus

  326. means to approach God through Jesus

  327. by the virtue of our union

  328. with Christ through faith.

  329. We pray through Jesus

  330. because He's our Savior,

  331. because He's our mediator,

  332. because He's our intercessor.

  333. And that means Jesus is standing before God

  334. and graciously gives,

  335. He gives to those who repent of their sins

  336. and trust in His name

  337. this basis to approach God the Father

  338. through Him.

  339. And that's why we end most of our prayers

  340. with the phrase,

  341. in Jesus' name we pray.

  342. To acknowledge the fact

  343. that we do not approach God

  344. on our own terms,

  345. on our own merit,

  346. but on the merits of Jesus,

  347. with the standing of Jesus.

  348. That doesn't mean you have to say the phrase

  349. every time.

  350. You can pray in the name of Jesus

  351. without saying,

  352. in Jesus' name we pray.

  353. In fact, there's no prayer

  354. recorded in the New Testament

  355. that ends with,

  356. in Jesus' name we pray.

  357. But even when you don't say that,

  358. you should mean that.

  359. Because we are incapable of pleasing God

  360. on our own merits.

  361. We are dead in sin,

  362. incapable of pleasing God.

  363. And it's because Jesus,

  364. God's beloved Son,

  365. died for our sins

  366. on the cross

  367. so that all who trust in Jesus

  368. can be counted righteous

  369. as He was.

  370. That's why we have access to God

  371. as our Father,

  372. because of Jesus,

  373. what He has done.

  374. That's why we pray through Jesus.

  375. And it's the Spirit of God

  376. that helps us,

  377. intercedes on our behalf,

  378. helps us as we pray.

  379. So we pray to God the Father

  380. through Jesus Christ

  381. and the Spirit of God

  382. joins us in that.

  383. So we pray with the Holy Spirit,

  384. in the Holy Spirit.

  385. That's the pattern we see

  386. throughout Scripture.

  387. It's hard for us to really

  388. kind of fathom

  389. the staggering implications of this.

  390. Because this means

  391. when we pray,

  392. we're not just mumbling to ourselves

  393. these half-coer words

  394. that you wonder

  395. whether we'll just vanish in thin air

  396. and we'll ever be heard by anybody.

  397. When you pray,

  398. you get caught up

  399. in the very communion

  400. and the communication

  401. of the triune God Himself.

  402. We are translated in our prayers

  403. to the throne room of God,

  404. the Father,

  405. speaking through Jesus,

  406. our mediator,

  407. with the Spirit of God

  408. by our side helping us.

  409. And if we just got a glimpse

  410. of what a tremendous thing

  411. it is to pray

  412. and what is happening

  413. as we're praying,

  414. it'd be difficult

  415. to get us to stop praying.

  416. Prayer is quite simply

  417. communication with God

  418. in the context of communion with God.

  419. Communication and communion,

  420. speaking and sharing

  421. in the life of the triune God.

  422. After addressing God as Father,

  423. we are to pray,

  424. hallowed be your name.

  425. This is the first of two requests

  426. that pertain directly to God.

  427. Hallowed be your name.

  428. Your kingdom come.

  429. And the name of God,

  430. as I said earlier,

  431. represents God.

  432. It stands for who He is.

  433. His character is all that He is.

  434. So to pray,

  435. hallowed be your name,

  436. is to pray that God

  437. would be honored as holy.

  438. Holy means set apart

  439. or consecrated.

  440. We're praying that God's name,

  441. that He will be recognized

  442. as a person who is separate from us,

  443. who is holy unlike us.

  444. So that means prayer is not

  445. about manipulating God

  446. for our purposes.

  447. It's not about finding

  448. some kind of therapeutic catharsis.

  449. Its purpose,

  450. the purpose of prayer,

  451. is to glorify God.

  452. That means everything we say

  453. in prayer,

  454. our prayer for daily provision,

  455. our prayer for pardon from sin,

  456. our prayer for protection from evil,

  457. has as its goal

  458. to make much of God

  459. and not make much of ourselves.

  460. It's a common thread

  461. that unites

  462. all non-Christian prayers

  463. is a way to exert control

  464. over a deity,

  465. to manipulate deity

  466. for our purposes.

  467. But Christian prayer

  468. is not like this.

  469. It's to submit to Him,

  470. to say,

  471. hallowed be your name,

  472. your kingdom come.

  473. The second request

  474. of the prayer

  475. is also about God.

  476. It says,

  477. your kingdom come.

  478. The kingdom of God

  479. is the realm of God's dominion.

  480. It refers to God's rule

  481. over His people.

  482. So wherever there is

  483. the people of God

  484. who have submitted to His rule,

  485. there is where

  486. the kingdom of God is found.

  487. And the prayer then

  488. is for the culmination,

  489. the fulfillment

  490. of God's promised rule,

  491. that God's kingdom program

  492. would be worked out

  493. in every corner of the earth,

  494. that God's rule of justice

  495. and righteousness

  496. would be extended

  497. over every area of life.

  498. And we're asking

  499. that God will do that.

  500. God will bring up

  501. the fulfillment

  502. of the kingdom.

  503. But frequently,

  504. instead of saying,

  505. your kingdom come,

  506. prayers can sound more like,

  507. let my kingdom come.

  508. Make me successful.

  509. Make me rich.

  510. Make me powerful.

  511. Make me desirable

  512. and beautiful.

  513. But because the purpose

  514. of Christian prayer

  515. is hallowed be your name,

  516. the thesis of Christian prayer,

  517. the main point of it is,

  518. let your kingdom come,

  519. is to seek God's will

  520. to be done in our lives.

  521. Prayer is not about

  522. bargaining with God

  523. to get what we want.

  524. It's about surrendering

  525. our wills

  526. and conforming ourselves

  527. to His kingdom agenda.

  528. And so when we're praying rightly,

  529. we are thinking

  530. God's thoughts after Him.

  531. We're loving the things

  532. that He loves

  533. and we're desiring

  534. the things that He wills

  535. and that's what we seek

  536. in prayer.

  537. That's why 1 John 5,

  538. it says,

  539. and this is the confidence

  540. that we have toward Him,

  541. that if we ask anything

  542. according to His will,

  543. He hears us.

  544. And if we know

  545. that He hears us

  546. in whatever we ask,

  547. we know that we have

  548. the requests

  549. that we have asked of Him.

  550. when our prayers flow

  551. from your kingdom come,

  552. God answers all

  553. of our requests.

  554. A very practical

  555. and helpful way

  556. to practice

  557. praying in this manner

  558. is to pray

  559. through the Scriptures.

  560. I commend it

  561. to all of you guys.

  562. The Bible is God's

  563. revealed will for us.

  564. Everything we need to know

  565. to be saved,

  566. everything that we have

  567. to know

  568. to become mature Christians

  569. are contained

  570. here in the Scriptures.

  571. And because prayer

  572. is communication

  573. and communion with God,

  574. it makes sense

  575. to hear from His Word

  576. than to respond back

  577. to God in prayer.

  578. That's why we do,

  579. that's what we do

  580. whenever we respond

  581. to the reading

  582. and preaching

  583. of God's Word

  584. on a Sunday morning

  585. with the corporate

  586. prayer time.

  587. That's why every Wednesday

  588. during our corporate

  589. prayer service,

  590. we have a preaching

  591. from God's Word

  592. in Psalms

  593. before we pray.

  594. often believers

  595. struggle in prayer

  596. because they don't

  597. know what to say.

  598. They feel like

  599. they're saying

  600. the same old thing

  601. over and over

  602. and over again.

  603. And that also

  604. solves this issue.

  605. If you're praying

  606. through the Scriptures,

  607. if you're meditating

  608. on the Scriptures

  609. and you take a verse

  610. at a time,

  611. you reflect on it,

  612. see what God

  613. would say to you

  614. and for the church,

  615. and then you respond

  616. back to God

  617. those things in prayer,

  618. then you will find

  619. that the time

  620. will fly by the light

  621. faster than you

  622. are used to.

  623. And you have

  624. no shortage

  625. of things to pray for.

  626. Now praying

  627. your kingdom come

  628. doesn't mean

  629. that we can't

  630. pray for anything

  631. for ourselves.

  632. Because there are

  633. things that we need

  634. in order to love

  635. and serve God.

  636. So this is also

  637. for His kingdom.

  638. It is good and right

  639. to pray for those things.

  640. So the next three

  641. petitions in the Lord's

  642. prayer are personal

  643. requests.

  644. It goes from God's name

  645. and God's kingdom

  646. to give us,

  647. forgive us,

  648. lead us.

  649. And the content

  650. of our personal

  651. request to God

  652. has three parts.

  653. It's provision,

  654. pardon,

  655. and protection.

  656. And all our personal

  657. needs are accounted

  658. for in these three

  659. petitions.

  660. The first personal

  661. request is in verse

  662. three.

  663. Give us each day

  664. our daily bread.

  665. It's God who

  666. sustains us,

  667. so we must come

  668. to God for both

  669. physical and

  670. spiritual provision.

  671. And a petition

  672. that says,

  673. give us each day

  674. our daily bread

  675. assumes that

  676. each day

  677. we are daily

  678. walking with God.

  679. That our companionship

  680. with Him

  681. is not something

  682. that we turn to

  683. just in times of

  684. crises,

  685. but it's something

  686. that we engage

  687. in every single day.

  688. And this prayer

  689. for daily bread

  690. has in view

  691. God's provision

  692. of manna

  693. in the wilderness

  694. for Israel.

  695. Exodus 16

  696. tells us that

  697. when Israel

  698. was going through

  699. the wilderness

  700. to their promised land,

  701. they had no food

  702. to eat,

  703. but God rained

  704. manna,

  705. which is a type

  706. of bread

  707. described as a

  708. fine flaky

  709. like thing,

  710. like coriander

  711. seed,

  712. white wafers

  713. made with honey.

  714. He rained it

  715. from heaven.

  716. And he said

  717. that he did

  718. this daily

  719. with the dew

  720. of the morning.

  721. And the Israelites

  722. were instructed

  723. to collect

  724. a very specific

  725. amount depending

  726. on how many

  727. members they had

  728. in their families.

  729. And they recommended

  730. not to save

  731. any of it

  732. for the next day.

  733. And they recommended

  734. not to collect

  735. more than they need.

  736. And the uncollected

  737. manna on the ground

  738. melted when the sun

  739. grew hot during the day.

  740. And the manna

  741. that they tried

  742. to save for the next day

  743. rotted with worms.

  744. The point of it all

  745. was that God

  746. wanted Israel

  747. to live

  748. daily by faith

  749. in daily dependence

  750. on God

  751. for his provision.

  752. He's not going

  753. to give us

  754. a year's supply

  755. of spiritual blessings

  756. and food

  757. so that you can live

  758. without him

  759. for that next year.

  760. He wants us

  761. to come to him

  762. daily in dependence

  763. on him.

  764. And that's what

  765. Jesus teaches as well.

  766. He teaches this

  767. in Matthew 6

  768. 31-34

  769. Therefore do not

  770. be anxious

  771. saying

  772. what shall we eat

  773. or what shall we drink

  774. or what shall we eat

  775. what shall we wear

  776. for the Gentiles

  777. seek after these things

  778. and your heavenly Father

  779. knows that you need

  780. them all

  781. but seek first

  782. the kingdom of God

  783. and his righteousness

  784. and all these things

  785. will be added to you.

  786. Therefore

  787. do not be anxious

  788. about tomorrow

  789. for tomorrow

  790. will be anxious

  791. for itself.

  792. Sufficient

  793. for the day

  794. is its own trouble.

  795. Each day

  796. has enough trouble

  797. of its own.

  798. So God calls us

  799. to depend on him

  800. daily for those troubles

  801. and when we do

  802. he's promised

  803. to provide us

  804. and sustain us

  805. prove true.

  806. Sometimes

  807. we despair

  808. of the troubles

  809. and sufferings

  810. that fill our lives

  811. because we're worrying

  812. about tomorrow.

  813. Because we think

  814. to ourselves

  815. I can't keep going

  816. like this

  817. for another day

  818. another week

  819. another month

  820. another year.

  821. I don't know

  822. how I'm going

  823. to get food

  824. on the table

  825. for my family

  826. for the next month.

  827. I don't know

  828. how I'm going

  829. to last

  830. this entire winter

  831. with my depression.

  832. I don't know

  833. how I'm going

  834. to make it through

  835. the demanding

  836. early years

  837. of my children.

  838. I don't know

  839. how I can get

  840. through this illness.

  841. I don't know

  842. how I'm going

  843. to keep living

  844. with my difficult

  845. spouse.

  846. But God

  847. is not asking

  848. us to worry

  849. about tomorrow

  850. or the next

  851. week

  852. or the month

  853. or the next year.

  854. He tells us

  855. to worry about

  856. today.

  857. Look to God

  858. for your help

  859. and ask for

  860. his sustaining

  861. grace for today

  862. and you will find

  863. that there is

  864. sufficient grace

  865. for you.

  866. Lamentations 3

  867. 22-23

  868. The steadfast love

  869. of the Lord

  870. never ceases.

  871. His mercies

  872. never come

  873. to an end.

  874. They are new

  875. every morning.

  876. Great is your

  877. faithfulness.

  878. As people

  879. who work hard

  880. to provide

  881. for ourselves

  882. and for our families

  883. we can forget

  884. to depend on God

  885. for daily bread.

  886. But we need

  887. to recognize

  888. that our daily

  889. provision comes

  890. from God

  891. even if we

  892. work really hard

  893. to get them.

  894. The intellect

  895. that we have

  896. the abilities

  897. that we have

  898. the opportunities

  899. that we have

  900. the jobs

  901. that we have

  902. the health

  903. that we have

  904. that enable us

  905. to work

  906. where do you

  907. think they came

  908. from?

  909. They all came

  910. from God.

  911. God.

  912. So each day

  913. we go to work

  914. we should

  915. thank God

  916. for his

  917. daily provision.

  918. But more

  919. than just

  920. physical provision

  921. is in view

  922. here.

  923. Because in

  924. John 6

  925. Jesus says

  926. I am

  927. the bread

  928. of life.

  929. The true

  930. bread

  931. that the bread

  932. that Moses

  933. brought down

  934. from heaven

  935. pointed to.

  936. The fulfillment

  937. of it all.

  938. Jesus is the

  939. ultimate

  940. spiritual

  941. bread

  942. bread

  943. of life.

  944. He is the

  945. one who

  946. gives spiritual

  947. nourishment

  948. to us.

  949. Daily we

  950. should seek

  951. life,

  952. peace,

  953. and joy,

  954. and rest

  955. that come

  956. from only

  957. Christ

  958. to live

  959. in this

  960. world.

  961. Daily we

  962. need his

  963. strength to

  964. subdue our

  965. sinful flesh.

  966. Daily we

  967. need Jesus

  968. to cry out

  969. for him

  970. for his

  971. spiritual

  972. provision.

  973. Maybe

  974. some of you

  975. have been

  976. hungry for

  977. a while.

  978. Are you

  979. relying on

  980. the experience

  981. of God's

  982. grace

  983. yesterday

  984. or a

  985. year ago

  986. or when

  987. you first

  988. came to

  989. faith

  990. to sustain

  991. you now?

  992. God has

  993. new

  994. grace,

  995. new

  996. mercies

  997. sufficient

  998. for you

  999. today.

  1000. So the

  1001. first

  1002. three

  1003. petitions

  1004. of the

  1005. Lord's

  1006. prayer

  1007. that we've

  1008. just seen

  1009. hallowed

  1010. be your

  1011. name,

  1012. your

  1013. kingdom

  1014. come,

  1015. give us

  1016. each

  1017. day our

  1018. daily

  1019. bread.

  1020. They

  1021. mirror the

  1022. three

  1023. temptations

  1024. that Jesus

  1025. faced in

  1026. the wilderness

  1027. in Luke

  1028. 4 in

  1029. reverse

  1030. order.

  1031. The devil

  1032. tempted

  1033. Jesus to

  1034. throw himself

  1035. down from

  1036. the pinnacle

  1037. of the

  1038. temple in

  1039. an attempt

  1040. to force

  1041. God's hand

  1042. and make

  1043. him demonstrate

  1044. his care

  1045. for Jesus.

  1046. But Jesus

  1047. responded,

  1048. you shall

  1049. not put the

  1050. Lord your

  1051. God to

  1052. the test.

  1053. Instead of

  1054. trying to

  1055. manipulate God

  1056. and use

  1057. him to

  1058. make much

  1059. of

  1060. ourselves,

  1061. see how

  1062. loved I

  1063. am,

  1064. see how

  1065. great I

  1066. am.

  1067. Jesus

  1068. refused to

  1069. test God

  1070. because

  1071. in the

  1072. temple,

  1073. that is the

  1074. place where

  1075. God's name

  1076. should be

  1077. hallowed.

  1078. His name

  1079. should be

  1080. honored as

  1081. holy.

  1082. The devil

  1083. also tempted

  1084. Jesus by

  1085. showing him

  1086. all the

  1087. kingdoms of

  1088. the world

  1089. in a

  1090. moment's

  1091. time and

  1092. saying to

  1093. him,

  1094. to you,

  1095. I will

  1096. give all

  1097. this authority

  1098. and glory

  1099. for it has

  1100. been delivered

  1101. to me and

  1102. I will

  1103. give it

  1104. to whom

  1105. I will.

  1106. If you

  1107. then will

  1108. worship

  1109. me,

  1110. it will

  1111. all be

  1112. yours.

  1113. But

  1114. Jesus

  1115. resisted

  1116. the devil

  1117. saying,

  1118. you shall

  1119. worship

  1120. the Lord

  1121. your God

  1122. and him

  1123. only shall

  1124. you serve.

  1125. Instead of

  1126. seeking the

  1127. glory and

  1128. authority of

  1129. the kingdoms

  1130. for ourselves

  1131. apart from

  1132. God,

  1133. we are to

  1134. pray,

  1135. let your

  1136. kingdom come

  1137. God.

  1138. And

  1139. lastly,

  1140. the devil

  1141. tempted Jesus

  1142. while he

  1143. was hungry

  1144. saying,

  1145. if you

  1146. are the

  1147. son of

  1148. God,

  1149. command

  1150. this stone

  1151. to become

  1152. bread.

  1153. But

  1154. Jesus

  1155. resisted

  1156. and reaffirmed

  1157. his allegiance

  1158. to God,

  1159. depended on

  1160. him to

  1161. live by

  1162. every word

  1163. that proceeds

  1164. from the

  1165. mouth of

  1166. God,

  1167. to depend

  1168. on his

  1169. provision.

  1170. So these

  1171. three temptations

  1172. that Jesus

  1173. faced represent

  1174. the kinds of

  1175. temptations that

  1176. we will face

  1177. as his

  1178. followers on a

  1179. daily basis

  1180. until the

  1181. day we

  1182. die.

  1183. God

  1184. and these

  1185. are the

  1186. devil's

  1187. main

  1188. strategies

  1189. to get

  1190. us to

  1191. reject,

  1192. to renounce

  1193. God,

  1194. our allegiance

  1195. to God

  1196. and to

  1197. live for

  1198. ourselves

  1199. and to

  1200. go after

  1201. the idols

  1202. of this

  1203. world.

  1204. But in

  1205. our passage,

  1206. Jesus is

  1207. giving us

  1208. a tool

  1209. with which

  1210. we can

  1211. fight this

  1212. spiritual

  1213. battle to

  1214. counteract the

  1215. schemes of

  1216. the enemy

  1217. and that's

  1218. by praying,

  1219. Father,

  1220. hallowed be

  1221. your name,

  1222. your kingdom

  1223. come,

  1224. give us

  1225. each day

  1226. our daily

  1227. bread.

  1228. And the

  1229. fourth petition

  1230. and the

  1231. second personal

  1232. request,

  1233. it flows from

  1234. these first

  1235. three because

  1236. as sinful

  1237. people who

  1238. are not yet

  1239. perfected in

  1240. the image of

  1241. Christ,

  1242. we will fail

  1243. to follow

  1244. God,

  1245. we will fail

  1246. to hallow

  1247. God's name,

  1248. we will fail

  1249. to seek first

  1250. his kingdom,

  1251. we will fail

  1252. to depend on

  1253. him for daily

  1254. bread.

  1255. So it should

  1256. be the habit

  1257. of the

  1258. Christian life

  1259. to seek

  1260. God's

  1261. forgiveness.

  1262. Verse 4

  1263. says,

  1264. and forgive

  1265. us our

  1266. sins,

  1267. for we

  1268. ourselves

  1269. forgive

  1270. everyone

  1271. who is

  1272. indebted

  1273. to us.

  1274. This verse

  1275. reveals that

  1276. the primary

  1277. debt that

  1278. Luke has

  1279. in mind

  1280. is not

  1281. financial debt

  1282. but it's

  1283. spiritual debt,

  1284. it's the

  1285. debt of

  1286. sin.

  1287. We are to

  1288. ask God

  1289. for forgiveness

  1290. for our

  1291. sins.

  1292. And the

  1293. reason why

  1294. we can

  1295. approach

  1296. God

  1297. and seek

  1298. his

  1299. forgiveness,

  1300. the reason

  1301. that he

  1302. gives here

  1303. is that

  1304. we

  1305. ourselves

  1306. forgive

  1307. everyone

  1308. who is

  1309. indebted

  1310. to us.

  1311. Earlier

  1312. in Luke

    Luke 6:31

  1313. chapter 6

  1314. verse 31,

  1315. Jesus

  1316. commanded us,

  1317. as you

  1318. wish that

  1319. others

  1320. would do

  1321. to you,

  1322. do so

  1323. to them.

  1324. And then

  1325. he explained

  1326. this in

  1327. verses 37

  1328. to 38,

  1329. judge not

  1330. and you

  1331. will not

  1332. be judged,

  1333. condemn not

  1334. and you

  1335. will not

  1336. be condemned,

  1337. forgive and

  1338. you will be

  1339. forgiven,

  1340. give and

  1341. it will be

  1342. given to

  1343. you.

  1344. The implied

  1345. subject of

  1346. all of these

  1347. passive verbs

  1348. is God.

  1349. So if we

  1350. do not judge

  1351. others wrongly,

  1352. God will not

  1353. judge us.

  1354. If we forgive

  1355. them, God

  1356. will also

  1357. forgive us.

  1358. This is

  1359. not because

  1360. our doing

  1361. good works

  1362. in like

  1363. forgiving

  1364. others

  1365. becomes the

  1366. basis for

  1367. salvation.

  1368. Rather,

  1369. these good

  1370. works that

  1371. we do,

  1372. us forgiving

  1373. other people

  1374. is the

  1375. evidence of

  1376. our salvation

  1377. because salvation

  1378. is a gift

  1379. from God.

  1380. We're saved

  1381. by God's

  1382. grace through

  1383. faith in

  1384. Jesus Christ

  1385. but those

  1386. who are

  1387. saved by

  1388. Jesus Christ

  1389. do good

  1390. works.

  1391. And part

  1392. of that good

  1393. works is how

  1394. we extend

  1395. forgiveness to

  1396. others.

  1397. That's why

  1398. in Ephesians

  1399. 4,

  1400. 32,

  1401. it says

  1402. we are

  1403. committed to

  1404. forgive one

  1405. another as

  1406. God in

  1407. Christ forgave

  1408. you.

  1409. It's because

  1410. God has

  1411. already forgiven

  1412. us that we

  1413. are to forgive

  1414. one another.

  1415. God's forgiveness

  1416. is the basis

  1417. for our

  1418. forgiveness.

  1419. And for that

  1420. reason, if we

  1421. don't forgive

  1422. other people,

  1423. God will

  1424. judge us as

  1425. unforgiven

  1426. people.

  1427. We will not

  1428. receive his

  1429. ultimate forgiveness

  1430. on the day of

  1431. judgment.

  1432. So we

  1433. can only

  1434. pray to

  1435. God,

  1436. forgive us

  1437. our sins

  1438. if we are

  1439. also honestly

  1440. willing to

  1441. extend the

  1442. same forgiveness

  1443. that we expect

  1444. of God to

  1445. others.

  1446. Unforgiveness

  1447. is a grave

  1448. sin.

  1449. It imprisons

  1450. us to anger

  1451. and bitterness

  1452. and resentment.

  1453. It cannibalizes

  1454. our joy.

  1455. It spells our

  1456. ultimate doom.

  1457. God's

  1458. sin.

  1459. Because only

  1460. those who

  1461. forgive will

  1462. be finally

  1463. forgiven.

  1464. And the

  1465. final petition

  1466. in Luke's

  1467. version of

  1468. the Lord's

  1469. prayer is

  1470. for protection,

  1471. spiritual

  1472. protection.

  1473. Lead us

  1474. not into

  1475. temptation.

  1476. The prayer

  1477. for pardon

  1478. from sin

  1479. flows naturally

  1480. into this

  1481. prayer for

  1482. protection so

  1483. that we might

  1484. be kept

  1485. from further

  1486. sins.

  1487. This doesn't

  1488. mean that

  1489. God's the

  1490. one that

  1491. leads us

  1492. to temptation.

  1493. James 1.13

  1494. says clearly

  1495. that God

  1496. tempts no

  1497. one.

  1498. But because

  1499. it is in

  1500. his power

  1501. to fortify

  1502. us and

  1503. guide us

  1504. away from

  1505. sin,

  1506. we should

  1507. pray to

  1508. him in

  1509. this way.

  1510. It's an

  1511. admission of

  1512. our own

  1513. weakness.

  1514. We're

  1515. acknowledging

  1516. that apart

  1517. from God's

  1518. powerful

  1519. intervention

  1520. on our

  1521. behalf,

  1522. we are

  1523. powerless to

  1524. withstand the

  1525. temptations

  1526. that come

  1527. our way.

  1528. Christians

  1529. are not

  1530. self-confident

  1531. and self-righteous

  1532. people,

  1533. but people

  1534. who are

  1535. humbly

  1536. dependent

  1537. on God

  1538. in prayer.

  1539. This is

  1540. how we

  1541. should pray.

  1542. Then in

  1543. verses 5

  1544. to 13,

  1545. Jesus teaches

  1546. us why

  1547. we should

  1548. pray.

  1549. And Jesus

  1550. sets out

  1551. this hypothetical

  1552. scenario in

  1553. verses 5

  1554. to 7.

  1555. Which of

  1556. you who

  1557. has a

  1558. friend will

  1559. go to

  1560. him at

  1561. midnight and

  1562. say to

  1563. him,

  1564. friend,

  1565. lend me

  1566. three loaves,

  1567. for a

  1568. friend of

  1569. mine has

  1570. arrived on

  1571. a journey,

  1572. and I

  1573. have nothing

  1574. to set

  1575. before him.

  1576. And he

  1577. will answer

  1578. from within,

  1579. do not

  1580. bother me,

  1581. the door

  1582. is now

  1583. shut,

  1584. and my

  1585. children

  1586. are with

  1587. me in

  1588. bed.

  1589. I

  1590. cannot

  1591. get up

  1592. and give

  1593. you

  1594. anything.

  1595. Hospitality,

  1596. as we've

  1597. been seeing,

  1598. was prized

  1599. very highly

  1600. in the

  1601. ancient

  1602. world,

  1603. and it

  1604. was this

  1605. man's

  1606. obligation,

  1607. even if

  1608. his guest

  1609. arrived really

  1610. late at

  1611. night,

  1612. midnight,

  1613. like in

  1614. this case,

  1615. to still

  1616. set out

  1617. food for

  1618. two

  1619. unideal

  1620. options.

  1621. The first

  1622. option was

  1623. to say,

  1624. hey,

  1625. sorry,

  1626. don't have

  1627. food,

  1628. just wait

  1629. till tomorrow

  1630. and be a

  1631. bad host.

  1632. That's the

  1633. first option.

  1634. The second

  1635. option is

  1636. to be a

  1637. rude neighbor

  1638. and go to

  1639. a neighbor

  1640. and be like,

  1641. hey,

  1642. I don't have

  1643. food and I

  1644. have a guest,

  1645. please give me

  1646. some food.

  1647. So you

  1648. either got to

  1649. be a rude

  1650. neighbor or

  1651. a bad

  1652. host,

  1653. so not good

  1654. options on

  1655. either side.

  1656. And so he

  1657. goes,

  1658. he opts for

  1659. the second

  1660. option,

  1661. he opts to

  1662. be a rude

  1663. neighbor,

  1664. so he goes

  1665. over to his

  1666. neighbor and

  1667. says,

  1668. hey,

  1669. man,

  1670. I'm in a

  1671. real pickle

  1672. here.

  1673. I have a

  1674. buddy in

  1675. town,

  1676. but I

  1677. don't have

  1678. any food

  1679. to serve

  1680. him.

  1681. Please

  1682. just give

  1683. me three

  1684. loaves.

  1685. I'll make

  1686. sure to pay

  1687. you back.

  1688. Look at the

  1689. words of

  1690. you.

  1691. He says,

  1692. lend me

  1693. three loaves.

  1694. It's like

  1695. a technical

  1696. business

  1697. transaction.

  1698. He wants

  1699. to pay

  1700. him back.

  1701. And then

  1702. Jesus then

  1703. asks,

  1704. do you

  1705. think this

  1706. friend will

  1707. reply?

  1708. Do not

  1709. bother me.

  1710. The door

  1711. is not

  1712. shut and

  1713. my children

  1714. are with

  1715. me in

  1716. bed.

  1717. I

  1718. cannot

  1719. get up

  1720. and give

  1721. you

  1722. anything.

  1723. Do you

  1724. think that

  1725. this person

  1726. will respond

  1727. that way?

  1728. So this

  1729. seems to

  1730. be a

  1731. typical

  1732. ancient

  1733. house

  1734. where the

  1735. whole

  1736. family

  1737. sleeps

  1738. on

  1739. one

  1740. mat.

  1741. So he

  1742. has

  1743. children

  1744. with him

  1745. in bed.

  1746. And the

  1747. doors shut

  1748. and the

  1749. doors in

  1750. this context

  1751. would have

  1752. had a

  1753. wooden

  1754. or iron

  1755. bar placed

  1756. through these

  1757. rings on

  1758. the door

  1759. panels.

  1760. So it

  1761. would have

  1762. created a

  1763. lot of

  1764. creaking

  1765. wood

  1766. noise as

  1767. well as

  1768. clanking

  1769. metal

  1770. noise.

  1771. And if

  1772. you know

  1773. about

  1774. children and

  1775. sleeping,

  1776. no

  1777. children

  1778. want

  1779. to

  1780. sleep.

  1781. It's a

  1782. struggle to

  1783. put them

  1784. to bed

  1785. sometimes.

  1786. He's

  1787. lying with

  1788. his

  1789. children

  1790. in bed

  1791. and rude

  1792. knock on

  1793. the door

  1794. at

  1795. midnight.

  1796. You can

  1797. imagine

  1798. the tension.

  1799. This guy's

  1800. understandably

  1801. upset.

  1802. But do

  1803. you think

  1804. this man,

  1805. this man,

  1806. this friend

  1807. had the

  1808. audacity,

  1809. the

  1810. shamelessness

  1811. to come

  1812. disturb

  1813. their

  1814. peaceful

  1815. night,

  1816. and do

  1817. you think

  1818. this friend

  1819. will refuse

  1820. this

  1821. shameless

  1822. man?

  1823. And Jesus

  1824. gives the

  1825. answer in

  1826. verse 8,

  1827. I tell you,

  1828. though he

  1829. will not

  1830. get up

  1831. and give

  1832. him

  1833. anything

  1834. because

  1835. he is

  1836. his

  1837. friend,

  1838. yet because

  1839. of his

  1840. impudence,

  1841. he will

  1842. rise and

  1843. give him

  1844. whatever he

  1845. needs.

  1846. Isn't that

  1847. true?

  1848. I mean,

  1849. he's already

  1850. disturbed them

  1851. and bothered

  1852. them and

  1853. probably

  1854. woken up

  1855. his

  1856. children.

  1857. This friend

  1858. will get up

  1859. and give

  1860. the man

  1861. the bread

  1862. he needs

  1863. out of

  1864. sheer

  1865. disbelief,

  1866. probably

  1867. scowling at

  1868. him,

  1869. shaking his

  1870. head and

  1871. thrusting the

  1872. bread to

  1873. him.

  1874. Here,

  1875. take it.

  1876. Now leave

  1877. me alone.

  1878. We're so

  1879. familiar with

  1880. the concept

  1881. of prayer,

  1882. so familiar

  1883. with the

  1884. Lord's

  1885. prayer that

  1886. the audacity

  1887. of it all

  1888. doesn't shock

  1889. us like it

  1890. should.

  1891. Because all

  1892. the petitions

  1893. in the Lord's

  1894. prayer,

  1895. if you look

  1896. at them,

  1897. they're all

  1898. imperatives,

  1899. they're

  1900. commands.

  1901. Jesus'

  1902. prayer is

  1903. not full

  1904. of ifs

  1905. and woulds

  1906. and mights.

  1907. Rather,

  1908. they are

  1909. bold,

  1910. direct,

  1911. hallowed

  1912. be your

  1913. name,

  1914. your kingdom

  1915. come,

  1916. give us

  1917. each day

  1918. our daily

  1919. bread,

  1920. forgive us

  1921. our sins,

  1922. lead us

  1923. not into

  1924. temptation.

  1925. These are

  1926. bold,

  1927. bracing

  1928. prayers.

  1929. And that's

  1930. how God

  1931. wants us

  1932. to pray

  1933. to Him.

  1934. Isaiah

  1935. 62

  1936. says,

  1937. you who

  1938. put the

  1939. Lord in

  1940. remembrance,

  1941. those who

  1942. put the

  1943. Lord in

  1944. remembrance

  1945. are those

  1946. who pray

  1947. to God

  1948. and bring

  1949. to God

  1950. to remember

  1951. the things

  1952. that He

  1953. promised

  1954. Him.

  1955. God,

  1956. remember

  1957. you said

  1958. this to

  1959. us?

  1960. Remember

  1961. you promised

  1962. this to

  1963. us?

  1964. We're

  1965. asking

  1966. you.

  1967. We're

  1968. bringing

  1969. to your

  1970. remembrance.

  1971. He

  1972. says,

  1973. you who

  1974. put the

  1975. Lord in

  1976. remembrance,

  1977. take no

  1978. rest and

  1979. give God

  1980. no rest

  1981. until He

  1982. establishes

  1983. Jerusalem and

  1984. makes it a

  1985. praise in

  1986. the earth.

  1987. This is how

  1988. God's Word

  1989. teaches us

  1990. to pray.

  1991. Give God

  1992. no rest.

  1993. Prevail

  1994. upon Him.

  1995. Remind

  1996. Him of

  1997. the promises

  1998. contained in

  1999. His Word.

  2000. Approach

  2001. Him in

  2002. prayer with

  2003. shameless

  2004. audacity.

  2005. go to

  2006. Him

  2007. frequently

  2008. and at

  2009. all

  2010. times

  2011. and

  2012. don't

  2013. let

  2014. Him

  2015. off

  2016. the

  2017. hook.

  2018. Persevere

  2019. in your

  2020. prayers

  2021. until He

  2022. grants it

  2023. to you.

  2024. That's how

  2025. the saints

  2026. have prayed

  2027. in ages

  2028. past.

  2029. Jacob,

  2030. he says

  2031. in Genesis

  2032. 30,

  2033. he wrestled

  2034. with God

  2035. all throughout

  2036. the night

  2037. saying to

  2038. God,

  2039. I will

  2040. not let

  2041. you go

  2042. unless you

  2043. bless me.

  2044. Colossians

  2045. 4,

  2046. 12,

  2047. Paul says

  2048. this,

  2049. Epaphras,

  2050. who is

  2051. one of

  2052. you,

  2053. a servant

  2054. of Christ

  2055. Jesus,

  2056. greets

  2057. you,

  2058. always

  2059. struggling

  2060. on your

  2061. behalf

  2062. in His

  2063. prayers

  2064. that you

  2065. may stand

  2066. mature

  2067. and fully

  2068. assured

  2069. in all

  2070. the will

  2071. of God.

  2072. The word

  2073. struggle

  2074. is the

  2075. word,

  2076. same word

  2077. that is

  2078. used to

  2079. describe a

  2080. wrestling

  2081. contest,

  2082. an

  2083. athletic

  2084. contest.

  2085. Do you

  2086. wrestle with

  2087. God in

  2088. your prayers?

  2089. Do you

  2090. wrestle with

  2091. God on

  2092. behalf of

  2093. your brothers

  2094. and sisters

  2095. that they

  2096. might stand

  2097. mature before

  2098. God?

  2099. Well,

  2100. how I

  2101. wish

  2102. all of

  2103. us,

  2104. if I

  2105. had

  2106. people

  2107. who

  2108. were

  2109. wrestling

  2110. on my

  2111. behalf

  2112. this way,

  2113. there are

  2114. people

  2115. wrestling

  2116. for you

  2117. in

  2118. prayer.

  2119. Hannah

  2120. and I

  2121. wrestle

  2122. for you

  2123. in

  2124. prayer.

  2125. Our

  2126. elders,

  2127. our

  2128. leadership

  2129. team,

  2130. we

  2131. wrestle

  2132. for you

  2133. in

  2134. prayer.

  2135. Do you

  2136. wrestle

  2137. for one

  2138. another

  2139. in

  2140. prayer?

  2141. There's

  2142. no

  2143. victory,

  2144. there's

  2145. no

  2146. blessing,

  2147. there's

  2148. no

  2149. progress,

  2150. no

  2151. growth,

  2152. no

  2153. sanctification,

  2154. some of

  2155. that falls

  2156. on us.

  2157. when you

  2158. see a

  2159. brother or

  2160. sister

  2161. struggling

  2162. with the

  2163. besetting

  2164. sin,

  2165. do you

  2166. wrestle

  2167. with

  2168. God?

  2169. God,

  2170. you

  2171. promised,

  2172. you

  2173. promised

  2174. that you

  2175. give

  2176. him

  2177. power

  2178. to be

  2179. victorious.

  2180. Why

  2181. aren't

  2182. you

  2183. giving

  2184. it

  2185. to

  2186. him?

  2187. God,

  2188. you

  2189. promised

  2190. that you

  2191. will

  2192. help

  2193. her

  2194. when

  2195. she

  2196. is

  2197. anxious.

  2198. Why

  2199. don't

  2200. you

  2201. help

  2202. her,

  2203. God?

  2204. Do you

  2205. wrestle

  2206. with

  2207. God?

  2208. prayer

  2209. is the

  2210. stuff

  2211. of

  2212. battle

  2213. and

  2214. it's

  2215. in

  2216. the

  2217. struggle

  2218. of

  2219. prayer

  2220. that

  2221. kingdoms

  2222. of

  2223. darkness

  2224. fall.

  2225. It's

  2226. in

  2227. the

  2228. struggle

  2229. of

  2230. prayer

  2231. that

  2232. spiritual

  2233. victories

  2234. are

  2235. won

  2236. and

  2237. no

  2238. wonder

  2239. of

  2240. course

  2241. it's

  2242. hard

  2243. to

  2244. pray

  2245. because

  2246. our

  2247. enemies

  2248. oppose

  2249. it

  2250. with

  2251. all

  2252. their

  2253. might.

  2254. But

  2255. you

  2256. don't

  2257. skip

  2258. it

  2259. just

  2260. because

  2261. it's

  2262. hard.

  2263. We

  2264. must

  2265. pray.

  2266. Our

  2267. monthly

  2268. three

  2269. days

  2270. of

  2271. prayer

  2272. and

  2273. fasting

  2274. begins

  2275. tomorrow.

  2276. It

  2277. concludes

  2278. with

  2279. our

  2280. weekly

  2281. prayer

  2282. service

  2283. on

  2284. Wednesdays.

  2285. Those

  2286. are

  2287. ways

  2288. you

  2289. can

  2290. get

  2291. involved

  2292. to

  2293. pray.

  2294. You

  2295. can

  2296. find

  2297. a

  2298. prayer

  2299. guide

  2300. on

  2301. our

  2302. website

  2303. tomorrow.

  2304. Prioritize

  2305. those

  2306. things.

  2307. Come

  2308. to

  2309. pray

  2310. before

  2311. the

  2312. service.

  2313. Join

  2314. the

  2315. prophecy

  2316. team

  2317. to

  2318. pray

  2319. at

  2320. 9.

  2321. 15

  2322. a.m.

  2323. Pray

  2324. in

  2325. your

  2326. own

  2327. private

  2328. prayer

  2329. closets.

  2330. Find

  2331. accountability

  2332. and pray

  2333. shamelessly,

  2334. boldly,

  2335. and

  2336. frequently,

  2337. and

  2338. persistently,

  2339. and you

  2340. will see

  2341. life and

  2342. fruit

  2343. come from

  2344. that.

  2345. Even

  2346. this

  2347. friend

  2348. gave

  2349. the

  2350. villager

  2351. the

  2352. three

  2353. loaves

  2354. of

  2355. bread

  2356. so

  2357. that

  2358. he

  2359. wouldn't

  2360. be

  2361. bothered

  2362. anymore.

  2363. How

  2364. much

  2365. more

  2366. than

  2367. will

  2368. God

  2369. who

  2370. is

  2371. our

  2372. gracious

  2373. loving

  2374. father

  2375. give

  2376. us

  2377. what

  2378. we

  2379. pray

  2380. for.

  2381. That's

  2382. Jesus'

  2383. logic

  2384. in

  2385. verses

  2386. 9-10.

  2387. And I

  2388. tell you

  2389. ask

  2390. and it

  2391. will

  2392. be

  2393. given

  2394. to

  2395. you.

  2396. Seek

  2397. and you

  2398. will

  2399. find

  2400. knock

  2401. and it

  2402. will

  2403. be

  2404. opened

  2405. to

  2406. you.

  2407. For

  2408. everyone

  2409. who

  2410. asks

  2411. receives

  2412. and the

  2413. one

  2414. who

  2415. seeks

  2416. finds

  2417. and to

  2418. the

  2419. one

  2420. who

  2421. knocks

  2422. it

  2423. will

  2424. be

  2425. opened.

  2426. So

  2427. simple

  2428. isn't

  2429. it?

  2430. Ask

  2431. and it

  2432. will

  2433. be

  2434. given

  2435. to

  2436. you.

  2437. But we

  2438. like to

  2439. qualify

  2440. that,

  2441. complicate

  2442. that,

  2443. and nuance

  2444. that until

  2445. it virtually

  2446. nullifies

  2447. the amazing

  2448. promise that

  2449. it contains.

  2450. Yes,

  2451. it does

  2452. presume that

  2453. we are

  2454. praying for

  2455. what is

  2456. good.

  2457. Because in

  2458. the following

  2459. verses,

  2460. Jesus explicitly

  2461. says,

  2462. I will not

  2463. give you

  2464. what is

  2465. not good.

  2466. We might

  2467. think something

  2468. is good

  2469. for us.

  2470. It might

  2471. actually be

  2472. bad for

  2473. us.

  2474. That's

  2475. true.

  2476. But this

  2477. promise

  2478. still

  2479. stands.

  2480. Ask

  2481. and it

  2482. will

  2483. be

  2484. given

  2485. to

  2486. you.

  2487. Jesus

  2488. continues

  2489. in

  2490. verses

  2491. 11-13,

  2492. What

  2493. father

  2494. among

  2495. you,

  2496. if his

  2497. son

  2498. asks

  2499. for

  2500. a

  2501. fish,

  2502. will

  2503. instead

  2504. of

  2505. a

  2506. fish

  2507. give

  2508. him

  2509. a

  2510. serpent?

  2511. Or

  2512. if

  2513. he

  2514. asks

  2515. for

  2516. an

  2517. egg,

  2518. will

  2519. give

  2520. him

  2521. a

  2522. scorpion?

  2523. If

  2524. you

  2525. then

  2526. who

  2527. are

  2528. evil

  2529. know

  2530. how

  2531. to

  2532. give

  2533. good

  2534. gifts

  2535. to

  2536. your

  2537. children,

  2538. how

  2539. much

  2540. more

  2541. will

  2542. the

  2543. heavenly

  2544. father

  2545. give

  2546. the

  2547. holy

  2548. spirit

  2549. to

  2550. those

  2551. who

  2552. ask

  2553. him?

  2554. There

  2555. are

  2556. several

  2557. important

  2558. contrasts

  2559. that

  2560. Jesus

  2561. is

  2562. making

  2563. here.

  2564. First,

  2565. he

  2566. contrasts

  2567. the

  2568. father

  2569. among

  2570. us,

  2571. earthly

  2572. parents,

  2573. from

  2574. the

  2575. heavenly

  2576. father.

  2577. And

  2578. Jesus'

  2579. assessment

  2580. of

  2581. earthly

  2582. fathers

  2583. is

  2584. not

  2585. at

  2586. all

  2587. flattering.

  2588. He

  2589. says,

  2590. if

  2591. you,

  2592. then

  2593. who

  2594. are

  2595. evil,

  2596. know

  2597. how

  2598. to

  2599. give

  2600. good

  2601. gifts

  2602. to

  2603. your

  2604. children,

  2605. Sean,

  2606. you're

  2607. an

  2608. evil

  2609. parent,

  2610. but you

  2611. still

  2612. know how

  2613. to give

  2614. good

  2615. gifts

  2616. to your

  2617. children,

  2618. and that's

  2619. true.

  2620. I give

  2621. them a lot

  2622. of good

  2623. gifts.

  2624. You

  2625. think I,

  2626. as your

  2627. heavenly

  2628. father,

  2629. will not

  2630. give you

  2631. good

  2632. gifts

  2633. that you

  2634. ask

  2635. for?

  2636. This is

  2637. referring to

  2638. the

  2639. spiritual

  2640. blessings,

  2641. because

  2642. earlier in

  2643. Luke 10

  2644. 19,

  2645. Jesus

  2646. gave

  2647. his

  2648. disciples

  2649. the

  2650. authority

  2651. to tread

  2652. upon

  2653. serpents

  2654. and scorpions

  2655. and over

  2656. all the

  2657. power of

  2658. the enemy.

  2659. So the

  2660. serpents

  2661. and scorpions

  2662. are both

  2663. venomous

  2664. beasts

  2665. that

  2666. symbolize,

  2667. represent

  2668. the

  2669. poisonous

  2670. power

  2671. of the

  2672. enemies

  2673. of God.

  2674. And

  2675. they're

  2676. being

  2677. contrasted

  2678. here

  2679. with the

  2680. good

  2681. gifts

  2682. which

  2683. is

  2684. summed

  2685. up

  2686. in

  2687. the

  2688. Holy

  2689. Spirit.

  2690. He's

  2691. not

  2692. going to

  2693. give

  2694. you

  2695. bad

  2696. things.

  2697. Maybe

  2698. you think

  2699. that God's

  2700. handing you

  2701. over to

  2702. the devil.

  2703. He is

  2704. never

  2705. going to

  2706. hand you

  2707. over to

  2708. the devil.

  2709. He's

  2710. never

  2711. going to

  2712. make you

  2713. subject to

  2714. his

  2715. power

  2716. influence

  2717. when you

  2718. ask him

  2719. for good

  2720. things.

  2721. He's

  2722. not

  2723. going to

  2724. leave

  2725. you

  2726. alone

  2727. and

  2728. abandon

  2729. you

  2730. to

  2731. suffer

  2732. under

  2733. his

  2734. death

  2735. grip.

  2736. He's

  2737. going

  2738. to

  2739. give

  2740. you

  2741. good

  2742. gifts.

  2743. He's

  2744. our

  2745. good

  2746. and

  2747. gracious

  2748. Father.

  2749. And

  2750. the

  2751. Spirit

  2752. of God

  2753. is the

  2754. sum of

  2755. all of

  2756. his

  2757. blessings.

  2758. Our

  2759. union

  2760. with

  2761. Christ

  2762. comes

  2763. through

  2764. the

  2765. Spirit.

  2766. Our

  2767. adoption

  2768. into

  2769. his

  2770. family

  2771. comes

  2772. through

  2773. the

  2774. Spirit.

  2775. The

  2776. joy

  2777. and

  2778. comfort

  2779. peace

  2780. and

  2781. rest

  2782. we

  2783. experience

  2784. in

  2785. Jesus

  2786. they

  2787. come

  2788. through

  2789. the

  2790. Holy

  2791. Spirit.

  2792. He

  2793. will

  2794. give

  2795. you

  2796. the

  2797. Holy

  2798. Spirit

  2799. make

  2800. you

  2801. a

  2802. child

  2803. of

  2804. God.

  2805. And

  2806. all

  2807. of

  2808. these

  2809. privileges

  2810. are

  2811. ours

  2812. because

  2813. of what

  2814. Jesus

  2815. has

  2816. done

  2817. for

  2818. us.

  2819. we

  2820. were

  2821. not

  2822. worthy

  2823. to

  2824. be

  2825. his

  2826. children.

  2827. We

  2828. failed.

  2829. We

  2830. brought

  2831. shame

  2832. to our

  2833. heavenly

  2834. father.

  2835. But

  2836. because

  2837. he

  2838. loved

  2839. us

  2840. and

  2841. he

  2842. wanted

  2843. to

  2844. bring

  2845. us

  2846. and

  2847. restore

  2848. us

  2849. to

  2850. his

  2851. family

  2852. restore

  2853. us

  2854. as

  2855. his

  2856. heirs

  2857. God

  2858. sent

  2859. his

  2860. beloved

  2861. son

  2862. the

  2863. perfectly

  2864. obedient

  2865. son

  2866. and

  2867. he

  2868. took

  2869. our

  2870. shame.

  2871. He

  2872. died

  2873. for

  2874. our

  2875. sins

  2876. but

  2877. he

  2878. was

  2879. worthy

  2880. and

  2881. because

  2882. Jesus

  2883. was

  2884. worthy

  2885. he

  2886. was

  2887. raised

  2888. from

  2889. the

  2890. dead

  2891. because

  2892. he

  2893. was

  2894. righteous

  2895. death

  2896. could

  2897. not

  2898. hold

  2899. him

  2900. down

  2901. and

  2902. he

  2903. was

  2904. raised

  2905. and

  2906. those

  2907. who

  2908. trust

  2909. in

  2910. Jesus

  2911. are

  2912. united

  2913. to

  2914. him

  2915. so

  2916. that

  2917. those

  2918. who

  2919. call

  2920. Jesus

  2921. Lord

  2922. can

  2923. call

  2924. his

  2925. father

  2926. our

  2927. father

  2928. that's

  2929. what

  2930. enables

  2931. us

  2932. to

  2933. pray

  2934. I

  2935. went

  2936. to

  2937. a

  2938. birthday

  2939. party

  2940. recently

  2941. for

  2942. a

  2943. toddler

  2944. and

  2945. whenever

  2946. you go

  2947. to

  2948. something

  2949. like

  2950. that

  2951. it's

  2952. crazy

  2953. there's

  2954. a lot

  2955. of

  2956. crying

  2957. wailing

  2958. there's

  2959. a lot

  2960. of

  2961. giggling

  2962. and laughing

  2963. a lot

  2964. of

  2965. screaming

  2966. a lot

  2967. of

  2968. scolding

  2969. but

  2970. what's

  2971. amazing

  2972. is

  2973. the

  2974. parents

  2975. in

  2976. this

  2977. cacophony

  2978. of

  2979. noise

  2980. they

  2981. hear

  2982. their

  2983. child

  2984. cry

  2985. and

  2986. they

  2987. know

  2988. right

  2989. away

  2990. it's

  2991. their

  2992. child

  2993. out

  2994. of

  2995. the

  2996. dozens

  2997. they

  2998. hear

  2999. their

  3000. child

  3001. cry

  3002. and they

  3003. know

  3004. when

  3005. their

  3006. children

  3007. cry

  3008. this

  3009. has

  3010. been

  3011. demonstrated

  3012. over the

  3013. years

  3014. people

  3015. have

  3016. studied

  3017. it

  3018. it's

  3019. true

  3020. why

  3021. because

  3022. they

  3023. are

  3024. familiar

  3025. with

  3026. the

  3027. voice

  3028. of

  3029. their

  3030. children

  3031. because

  3032. they're

  3033. attentive

  3034. to

  3035. the

  3036. voice

  3037. of

  3038. their

  3039. children

  3040. and

  3041. our

  3042. heavenly

  3043. father

  3044. is

  3045. attentive

  3046. to

  3047. your

  3048. voice

  3049. our

  3050. heavenly

  3051. father

  3052. is

  3053. familiar

  3054. with

  3055. your

  3056. voice

  3057. when

  3058. you

  3059. pray

  3060. he

  3061. hears

  3062. and

  3063. he

  3064. promised

  3065. ask

  3066. and

  3067. it

  3068. will

  3069. be

  3070. given

  3071. to

  3072. you

  3073. so

  3074. seek

  3075. God

  3076. in

  3077. prayer

  3078. through

  3079. Jesus
