  1. Luke 11, 14 to 36.

  2. Now, he was casting out a demon that was mute.

  3. When the demon had gone out, the mute man spoke and the people marveled.

  4. But some of them said,

  5. He casts out demons by Beelzebul, the prince of demons.

  6. While others, to test him, kept seeking from him a sign from heaven.

  7. But he, knowing their thoughts, said to them,

  8. Every kingdom divided against itself is laid waste, and a divided household falls.

  9. And if Satan also is divided against himself, how will his kingdom stand?

  10. For you say that I cast out demons by Beelzebul.

  11. And if I cast out demons by Beelzebul, by whom do your sons cast them out?

  12. Therefore, they will be your judges.

  13. But if it is by the finger of God that I cast out demons,

  14. then the kingdom of God has come upon you.

  15. When a strong man, fully armed, guards his own palace, his goods are safe.

  16. But when one stronger than he attacks him and overcomes him,

  17. he takes away his armor in which he trusted and divides his spoil.

  18. Whoever is not with me is against me.

  19. And whoever does not gather with me scatters.

  20. When the unclean spirit has gone out of a person,

  21. it passes through waterless places seeking rest.

  22. And finding none, it says,

  23. I will return to my house from which I came.

  24. And when it comes, it finds the house swept and put in order.

  25. Then it goes and brings seven other spirits,

  26. more evil than itself,

  27. and they enter and dwell there.

  28. And the last state of that person is worse than the first.

  29. As he said these things,

  30. a woman in the crowd raised her voice and said to him,

  31. Blessed is the womb that bore you

  32. and the breasts at which you nursed.

  33. But he said,

  34. Blessed rather are those who hear the word of God and keep it.

  35. When the crowds were increasing,

  36. he began to say,

  37. This generation is an evil generation.

  38. It seeks for a sign,

  39. but no sign will be given to it except the sign of Jonah.

  40. For as Jonah became a sign to the people of Nineveh,

  41. so will the Son of Man be to this generation.

  42. The Queen of the South will rise up at the judgment

  43. with the men of this generation and condemn them.

  44. For she came from the ends of the earth

  45. to hear the wisdom of Solomon.

  46. And behold,

  47. something greater than Solomon is here.

  48. The men of Nineveh will rise up at the judgment

  49. with this generation and condemn it.

  50. For they repented at the preaching of Jonah.

  51. And behold,

  52. something greater than Jonah is here.

  53. No one,

  54. after lighting a lamp,

  55. puts it in a cellar or under a basket,

  56. but on a stand,

  57. so that those who enter may see the light.

  58. Your eye is the lamp of your body.

  59. When your eye is healthy,

  60. your whole body is full of light.

  61. But when it is bad,

  62. your body is full of darkness.

  63. Therefore,

  64. be careful,

  65. lest the light in you be darkness.

  66. If then,

  67. your whole body is full of light,

  68. having no part dark,

  69. it will be wholly bright,

  70. as when a lamp with its rays

  71. gives you light.

  72. This is God's holy and authoritative word.

  73. In an essay written in 1953 entitled,

  74. What is an agnostic?

  75. The British philosopher Bertrand Russell famously defined this widely used label.

  76. An agnostic, he says,

  77. thinks it is impossible to know the truth in matters such as God and the future life with which Christianity and other religions are concerned.

  78. Or, if not impossible,

  79. at least impossible at the present time.

  80. Are agnostics atheists?

  81. No.

  82. An atheist, like a Christian,

  83. holds that we can know whether or not there is a God.

  84. The Christian holds that we can know there is a God.

  85. The atheist, that we can know there is not.

  86. The agnostic suspends judgment,

  87. saying that there are not sufficient grounds either for affirmation or for denial.

  88. To a generation that is leery of commitment,

  89. like ours,

  90. this suspension of judgment can appear quite virtuous.

  91. I'm neither a dogmatic atheist or a dogmatic Christian.

  92. Both claim more than they can prove,

  93. but I am an agnostic.

  94. I don't form judgments without conclusive evidence.

  95. I occupy the middle ground.

  96. I'm a neutral, undecided party.

  97. But according to our passage today,

  98. this is neither wise nor virtuous.

  99. Because when it comes to spiritual matters,

  100. there is no neutral ground to stand on.

  101. To make no choice is to make a choice.

  102. And to suspend judgment on Jesus and his message

  103. is the same, in effect, as rejecting Jesus and his message.

  104. And so the main point of this passage

  105. that Jesus is getting across to us

  106. is that we must repent and believe in Jesus Christ,

  107. for there is no neutral ground.

  108. And Luke demonstrates this point

  109. with three sets of contrasts in this passage.

  110. First is Jesus versus Beelzebul.

  111. Second is hearing versus seeking signs.

  112. And third is light versus darkness.

  113. And the first contrast between Jesus and Beelzebul

  114. is interesting.

  115. It says in verse 14,

  116. Now Jesus was casting out a demon that was mute.

  117. When the demon had gone out,

  118. the mute man spoke,

  119. and the people marveled.

  120. The demon is described as mute

  121. because it's what the demon causes

  122. in the hosts that it occupies.

  123. Jesus casts out this demon

  124. so that the man can speak again,

  125. and the people, it says, marveled,

  126. which seems like initially a good reaction, right?

  127. It seems like a positive response.

  128. But it turns out that it's just,

  129. it's a mere fascination with what Jesus has done

  130. without faith.

  131. There's no response to him in faith.

  132. And we should heed this warning

  133. because marveling at Jesus is insufficient.

  134. We must not reduce Jesus and the works that he did

  135. and his teachings to a spectacle,

  136. a curiosity, an interest.

  137. Jesus is Christ the Lord,

  138. and he demands our faith and obedience

  139. in response to what he teaches.

  140. But this crowd does not respond that way.

  141. And instead, we see two different negative responses,

  142. which is a warning to us in verses 15 to 16.

  143. But some of them said,

  144. this is the first response,

  145. he casts out demons by Beelzebul,

  146. the prince of demons,

  147. while others,

  148. this is the second response,

  149. to test him,

  150. kept seeking from him a sign from heaven.

  151. So two negative responses.

  152. The first group responds with a smear campaign,

  153. misrepresenting Jesus' miracles

  154. as acts of Beelzebul,

  155. the prince of demons.

  156. Beelzebul probably comes from the name Beelzebul.

  157. Beel, as most of you know,

  158. is the name of the chief deity of the Canaanites

  159. that dwell the promised land that Israel later occupied.

  160. Zebul,

  161. Beel, that means lord.

  162. Zebul means high place,

  163. or lofty dwelling.

  164. So it probably refers to Beel as the lord of the high place,

  165. or the lord of the skies,

  166. as he was popularly called.

  167. It's conceptually similar to the way Ephesians 2,

    Ephesians 2:2

  168. verse 2 describes Satan

  169. as the prince of the power of the air.

  170. In the air,

  171. occupies this airy realm above the earth.

  172. And here,

  173. Beelzebul is just another name for Satan,

  174. which we see clearly later in verse 18.

  175. So the first group is smearing Jesus' ministry,

  176. misrepresenting him,

  177. saying that it's the act of Beelzebul.

  178. The second group responds with skepticism,

  179. disbelieving Jesus,

  180. and seeking further signs.

  181. And Jesus responds to both of these negative responses in turn.

  182. First, he addresses the smear campaign,

  183. people who are misrepresenting him,

  184. in verses 17 to 26.

  185. It says in verse 17 that Jesus knew their thoughts,

  186. and whenever this happens,

  187. this is now the fourth time we've been told

  188. that Jesus kind of perceives someone's thoughts,

  189. knows their hearts.

  190. Jesus is about to confront them with something.

  191. And again,

  192. that happens here in verses 17 to 18.

  193. Every kingdom divided against itself is laid waste,

  194. and a divided household falls.

  195. And if Satan also is divided against himself,

  196. how will his kingdom stand?

  197. For you say that I cast out demons by Beelzebul.

  198. Civil wars destroy nations.

  199. Divorces destroy families.

  200. Likewise,

  201. the kingdom of Satan,

  202. if divided,

  203. will crumble and fall.

  204. That's the logic.

  205. And Satan is not so stupid

  206. as to be divided against himself

  207. by opposing his own demonic forces.

  208. His influence is still clear

  209. and formidable throughout the world,

  210. and so it can't be that he is working against himself.

  211. So using this reason,

  212. Jesus neutralizes the crowd's slander

  213. that he's casting out demons by Beelzebul.

  214. It's illogical.

  215. Jesus continues in verse 19,

  216. And if I cast out demons by Beelzebul,

  217. by whom do your sons cast them out?

  218. Therefore they will be your judges.

  219. So their own sons,

  220. their own,

  221. maybe not literal children,

  222. but people that come from them,

  223. they are casting out demons also.

  224. And we see examples of this,

  225. for example,

  226. in Acts 19,

  227. the sons of Sceva,

  228. they are also Jewish itinerant exorcists.

  229. And if they are doing these things too,

  230. and these Jews,

  231. from whom these itinerant Jewish exorcists come from,

  232. are accusing Jesus of casting out demons by Beelzebul,

  233. he's asking them,

  234. what about people from your own midst?

  235. What about those people whom you endorse?

  236. Your Jewish itinerant exorcists,

  237. who do they cast out demons with?

  238. Are they too using the power of Beelzebul?

  239. So Jesus is saying that exorcists,

  240. from their own number,

  241. will judge them

  242. for their slanderous dismissal of Jesus' ministry.

  243. And then Jesus states

  244. what is actually happening in verse 20.

  245. But if it is by the finger of God

  246. that I cast out demons,

  247. then the kingdom of God has come upon you.

  248. Jesus is casting out demons.

  249. It's not an activity of Beelzebul,

  250. but it is the activity of God Almighty.

  251. And it's the sign

  252. that the kingdom of God has come upon them.

  253. The phrase, the finger of God,

  254. is an allusion to Exodus,

    Exodus 8:19

  255. chapter 8, verse 19,

  256. where Moses brings various plagues

  257. upon the land of Egypt and upon Pharaoh

  258. because of his refusal

  259. to let God's people, Israelites,

  260. go to worship him in freedom

  261. rather than being enslaved in Egypt.

  262. The Egyptian court magicians

  263. are able to replicate

  264. using their tricks or sorcery

  265. to replicate Moses' first two plagues

  266. of turning the water into blood

  267. and then making frogs come up from the land.

  268. So they are able to replicate it.

  269. And so the Pharaoh hardens his heart.

  270. But when Moses turns the dust of the earth

  271. into gnats and plagues humans and animals

  272. all throughout Egypt,

  273. it says this,

  274. that the magicians

  275. tried by their secret arts

  276. to produce gnats,

  277. but they could not.

  278. So there were gnats on man and beast.

  279. Then the magician said to Pharaoh,

  280. Pharaoh, this is the finger of God.

  281. But Pharaoh's heart was hardened

  282. and he would not listen to them

  283. as the Lord had said.

  284. So Jesus is making an allusion

  285. to this account in multiple levels.

  286. First, Jesus is not performing

  287. some secret tricks

  288. or relying on the spiritual forces of darkness

  289. to cast out demons.

  290. Rather, his work is not of the same ilk

  291. as even these inferior Jewish itinerant exorcists.

  292. Rather, Jesus is casting out demons

  293. by the very finger of God.

  294. Yet, like Pharaoh who hardened his heart

  295. in spite of this clear demonstration

  296. of God's power,

  297. these crowds are also hardening their hearts

  298. against Jesus.

  299. Then Jesus uses an analogy

  300. to explain the situation further

  301. in verses 21 to 22.

  302. When a strong man fully armed

  303. guards his own palace,

  304. his goods are safe.

  305. But when one stronger than he

  306. attacks him and overcomes him,

  307. he takes away his armor in which he trusted

  308. and divides his spoil.

  309. So this analogy is taken from

  310. the messianic prophecy

  311. about the servant of the Lord

  312. that's coming

  313. in Isaiah 49, 24 to 25,

  314. which says,

  315. Can the prey be taken from the mighty

  316. or the captives of a tyrant be rescued?

  317. For thus says the Lord,

  318. Even the captives of the mighty

  319. shall be taken

  320. and the prey of the tyrant be rescued.

  321. For I will contend with those

  322. who contend with you

  323. and I will save your children.

  324. So this was God's promise.

  325. This is what he promised he would do

  326. with Jesus,

  327. the coming Messiah.

  328. And Jesus is saying that

  329. this is what is actually happening.

  330. Satan is the fully armed strong man

  331. who is guarding his own palace.

  332. The word palace can also be translated

  333. fortress or a castle.

  334. So this is really a military imagery.

  335. So Beelzebul,

  336. the Lord of the high place,

  337. is guarding his high castle.

  338. When the strong man is guarding his castle,

  339. he says his goods are safe.

  340. But when one stronger than he,

  341. and that's Jesus,

  342. attacks him

  343. and overcomes him,

  344. he takes away his armor

  345. in which he trusted

  346. and divides the spoil.

  347. This is the second time now

  348. Jesus is being described

  349. as the stronger one.

  350. One who is mightier.

  351. That's how John the Baptist

  352. earlier described him.

  353. One who is mightier than I

  354. is coming

  355. and he will baptize you

  356. with the Holy Spirit and fire.

  357. So Jesus is the stronger one.

  358. Satan is the strong one in the world

  359. but Jesus is stronger still

  360. and he is the mightier one

  361. who wields

  362. not the powers of evil forces,

  363. these minions,

  364. as Satan does,

  365. but with the Holy Spirit.

  366. He comes with the Holy Spirit

  367. of the Almighty God.

  368. Satan holds sway

  369. over this world

  370. but he is powerless

  371. before Christ the King.

  372. This is a wonderful image.

  373. Jesus coming as the conquering king,

  374. invading the kingdom of Satan,

  375. disarming the prince of demons

  376. and despoiling his goods.

  377. And the spoils

  378. that he takes from the evil one

  379. refer to the salvation benefits

  380. that Jesus secures for his people,

  381. the redemption from spiritual slavery,

  382. the salvation benefits,

  383. the forgiveness of sins,

  384. the Holy Spirit,

  385. his gifts and eternal life

  386. in the kingdom of God.

  387. We are called the inheritance of Christ,

  388. the special possession of God

  389. in Ephesians 1, 18.

  390. And so he comes to claim us,

  391. to save us,

  392. to despoil Satan and his kingdom.

  393. And as the redeemed people of God then,

  394. as people who have now joined him,

  395. we get to partake

  396. in this ongoing kingdom advance.

  397. And that's what Jesus is referring to

  398. when he promises Peter

  399. and the other apostles

  400. in Matthew 16, 18.

  401. And I tell you,

  402. you are Peter.

  403. On this rock,

  404. I will build my church

  405. and the gates of hell

  406. shall not prevail against it.

  407. Christians often read this promise

  408. as a promise of protection,

  409. as if we're huddled up

  410. in this secure bunker somewhere

  411. and the forces of hell

  412. cannot overcome it

  413. because Jesus is this bunker.

  414. But that's not the image

  415. that is being conveyed to us

  416. because gates are defensive structures.

  417. They're not offensive structures.

  418. They are built to keep enemies out.

  419. So what's being promised here

  420. is not protection from the assault

  421. of the enemies,

  422. but empowerment to assault the enemies.

  423. We are to invade the kingdom of Satan,

  424. the realm of the spiritually dead,

  425. and to liberate the captives

  426. and despoil his goods.

  427. That's what we get to partake in.

  428. That's what Christ did for us.

  429. We are weak,

  430. but Christ is the stronger one.

  431. There may be family members,

  432. friends, neighbors,

  433. and maybe even some of us

  434. who may seem so captive

  435. to the power of the enemy

  436. that our rescue seems hopeless,

  437. but we have to remember

  438. that we are going actually

  439. with the stronger one

  440. who is able to disarm

  441. and dispossess the strong one.

  442. If some of you are struggling

  443. in your fight,

  444. in your battle for holiness,

  445. I hope this encourages you

  446. in your daily spiritual warfare

  447. against the enemy

  448. because Satan is strong.

  449. He is a strong one,

  450. and it seems at times

  451. like his hold over us

  452. may be evident in our besetting sins

  453. or in the stubborn unbelief

  454. of our loved ones

  455. that we pray for,

  456. that we share the gospel with.

  457. It may make it seem

  458. like his whole sway of,

  459. his sway over us is unbreakable,

  460. but we have to remember

  461. that the stronger one

  462. is on our side.

  463. Our victory is assured,

  464. and it is our destiny

  465. to gain more and more ground

  466. in the battles

  467. until the war is won in fullness

  468. because Christ has won

  469. the decisive battle on the cross

  470. and victory is assured to us.

  471. The demons flee at the mention

  472. of the name of Christ,

  473. Christ the King,

  474. the kingdom of Satan is falling,

  475. not because of internal discord,

  476. not because of a civil war,

  477. but because of an external,

  478. overwhelming invasion

  479. by Jesus Christ and his church.

  480. That's why earlier in Luke 10,

  481. 17 to 18,

  482. when his disciples,

  483. 72 disciples returned with joy

  484. from their mission,

  485. saying,

  486. Lord, Lord,

  487. even the demons are subject to us,

  488. subject to us in your name,

  489. Jesus replied to them,

  490. I saw Satan fall

  491. like lightning from heaven.

  492. Through the ministry of Christ

  493. and his followers,

  494. Satan falls from his high abode

  495. and is dispossessed.

  496. In 1 Kings chapter 1,

    1 Kings 1 chapter mention

  497. we find the derogatory form

  498. of the word Beelzebul.

  499. They change it to Beelzebub,

  500. which means Lord of the flies.

  501. That's where the title

  502. of the novel comes from.

  503. And so in reality,

  504. when with the coming of Jesus,

  505. the Lord of the skies

  506. is reduced to the Lord of the flies.

  507. That's what Jesus does.

  508. And because this is a cosmic battle

  509. that is being waged over the entire world,

  510. there is no neutral ground.

  511. There are no Switzerland's

  512. in this spiritual arena.

  513. So Jesus says in verse 23,

  514. whoever is not with me

  515. is against me.

  516. And whoever does not

  517. outgather with me scatters.

  518. So the first clause of this verse

  519. is using military imagery.

  520. And the second clause

  521. is using agricultural imagery.

  522. Whoever is not with Jesus,

  523. meaning if you're not fighting

  524. on Jesus' side,

  525. you're on the opposite side.

  526. You're against Jesus

  527. and allied with Beelzebul.

  528. And the second clause says,

  529. whoever does not gather

  530. with Jesus scatters.

  531. The word gather is a term

  532. used to refer to

  533. the harvesting of crops.

  534. Luke used it earlier

  535. in chapter 3 verse 17

  536. in the same context

  537. where John the Baptist says

  538. Jesus is the mightier one.

  539. So his winnowing fork

  540. is in his hand

  541. to clear his threshing floor

  542. and to gather the wheat

  543. into his barn.

  544. But the chaff he will burn

  545. with unquenchable fire.

  546. So Jesus is doing

  547. a gathering work.

  548. He is collecting his wheat,

  549. his people.

  550. And those who belong to him,

  551. they gather with him.

  552. They participate in his work

  553. to gather the wheat

  554. into his barn.

  555. But those who reject him,

  556. the chaff, rather,

  557. will be scattered by the wind

  558. and consumed by the fire

  559. of judgment.

  560. Those who do not join Jesus

  561. in gathering the harvest

  562. will instead join Satan

  563. in scattering the harvest

  564. and they will be scattered with it.

  565. There is no neutral middle ground.

  566. And Jesus elaborates

  567. on this reality

  568. in verses 24 to 26.

  569. When the unclean spirit

  570. has gone out of a person,

  571. it passes through

  572. waterless places seeking rest.

  573. And finding none,

  574. it says,

  575. I will return to my house

  576. from which I came.

  577. And when it comes,

  578. it finds the house

  579. swept and put in order.

  580. Then it goes and brings

  581. seven other spirits

  582. more evil than itself

  583. and they enter and dwell there.

  584. And the last state

  585. of that person

  586. is worse than the first.

  587. So Jesus uses

  588. an illustration

  589. of a demoniac

  590. to highlight the importance

  591. of responding

  592. to Jesus' message

  593. with faith and obedience.

  594. Because when an unclean spirit

  595. is cast out of a person,

  596. it passes through

  597. waterless places.

  598. So a waterless place

  599. is an arid place,

  600. a wilderness.

  601. It's the proverbial abode

  602. of evil spirits.

  603. They wander like nomads

  604. in the wastelands

  605. where there is no life,

  606. where there is no water.

  607. So Jesus was tempted

  608. by the devil earlier

  609. in Luke chapter 4

    Luke 4 chapter mention

  610. in the wilderness.

  611. Likewise,

  612. in Luke 8, 29,

  613. we saw the garrison demoniac

  614. when he was possessed

  615. by a demon

  616. would be driven

  617. to the wilderness.

  618. So that's what we're seeing here,

  619. waterless places

  620. seeking rest.

  621. But as they're roaming

  622. through these waterless places

  623. seeking rest,

  624. they are not satisfied

  625. with their nomadic existence

  626. in the wilderness.

  627. They don't find rest

  628. that they are seeking.

  629. They desire to be housed.

  630. So the exorcised demon says,

  631. I will return

  632. to my house

  633. from which I came.

  634. When it returns,

  635. the person it used

  636. to dwell in

  637. is found,

  638. is to have a sound mind now,

  639. has an ordered life,

  640. but still unoccupied.

  641. So then it recruits

  642. seven other spirits

  643. more evil than itself

  644. so they could together

  645. occupy the person

  646. and dwell inside him

  647. in a much more permanent way.

  648. So the number seven

  649. is a symbol of completeness.

  650. So it refers to

  651. full occupancy,

  652. a total control.

  653. And the last state

  654. of that person

  655. is worse

  656. than the first.

  657. We as human beings

  658. have been created

  659. with the capacity

  660. to house spirits.

  661. If an evil spirit

  662. is cast out

  663. of a person,

  664. that person does not,

  665. and then that person

  666. does not put his faith

  667. in Jesus

  668. and is indwelled

  669. by God's spirit,

  670. the Holy Spirit,

  671. then he is still

  672. vulnerable

  673. to the return

  674. of still more

  675. evil spirits.

  676. We were created

  677. for the spirit's indwelling,

  678. the Holy Spirit's indwelling,

  679. because God

  680. intends to dwell

  681. with us.

  682. That's his ultimate goal.

  683. The ultimate goal

  684. of creation

  685. is that we become

  686. his dwelling place.

  687. And if we do not say

  688. yes to God,

  689. then we are saying

  690. yes to the devil.

  691. There's no neutral zone.

  692. We can't stay

  693. unoccupied

  694. and uninfluenced

  695. by the spiritual realm.

  696. We're either with Christ

  697. or against him.

  698. This principle

  699. is true literally,

  700. but it can also be applied

  701. more broadly

  702. in a figurative sense.

  703. And 2 Peter

  704. seems to be doing that.

  705. 2 Peter 2,

    2 Peter 2:20–22

  706. verse 20 to 22.

  707. For if,

  708. after they have escaped

  709. the defilements

  710. of the world

  711. through the knowledge

  712. of our Lord

  713. and Savior Jesus Christ,

  714. they are again

  715. entangled in them

  716. and overcome,

  717. the last state

  718. has become worse

  719. for them

  720. than the first.

  721. For it would have

  722. been better for them

  723. never to have known

  724. the way of righteousness

  725. than after knowing it

  726. to turn back

  727. from the holy commandment

  728. delivered to them.

  729. what the true proverb

  730. says has happened

  731. to them.

  732. The dog returns

  733. to its own vomit

  734. and the soul,

  735. after washing herself,

  736. returns to wallow

  737. in the mire.

  738. If you encounter

  739. Christ in some way

  740. and come into contact

  741. with his representatives,

  742. the church,

  743. and you experience

  744. a measure of deliverance

  745. from the sins

  746. that made your

  747. former life miserable,

  748. maybe you overcome

  749. addictions

  750. to alcohol

  751. or opioids,

  752. maybe addictions

  753. to gambling

  754. or pornography,

  755. or maybe with the help

  756. of the Christian community

  757. and some biblical teaching

  758. on financial stewardship,

  759. you escape

  760. the vicious cycle

  761. of financial

  762. irresponsibility,

  763. debt,

  764. and poverty.

  765. Or maybe you overcome

  766. anorexia

  767. or you escape

  768. gang involvement.

  769. Whatever it may be,

  770. all of these things happen

  771. in churches,

  772. but if you experience

  773. a measure of that deliverance

  774. but you don't

  775. persevere

  776. and put your faith

  777. in Jesus Christ,

  778. you try to take

  779. the gifts of God

  780. whilst leaving

  781. the giver

  782. of the good gifts

  783. behind.

  784. You have left

  785. yourself unoccupied

  786. and vulnerable

  787. and when you fall away

  788. from the influence

  789. of the evil one,

  790. the last state

  791. will be worse

  792. than the first.

  793. putting off

  794. your sins

  795. is not enough.

  796. You can't do that

  797. without also putting

  798. on the righteousness

  799. of Christ.

  800. Our minds and hearts

  801. are much like our bellies

  802. in the sense that

  803. they always need

  804. to be filled.

  805. The only way

  806. to stop eating

  807. junk food

  808. is to eat healthy food

  809. so you're full

  810. and you don't crave

  811. junk food

  812. because our stomach

  813. needs to be filled

  814. with something.

  815. We need to put it off

  816. and we need to put it on.

  817. Our minds are never

  818. blank slates

  819. and our hearts

  820. are never empty vessels.

  821. They need to be

  822. filled with things

  823. and unless they're filled

  824. with the treasures

  825. of God himself,

  826. they will fill up

  827. with the trinkets

  828. of this world.

  829. An experience

  830. of Jesus

  831. is not enough.

  832. We must believe

  833. in Jesus

  834. and obey Jesus.

  835. We have to repent

  836. and believe in Jesus Christ

  837. because there is

  838. no neutral ground.

  839. That's the first contrast

  840. that Luke sets before us.

  841. The choice between

  842. Jesus and Beelzebul.

  843. The second contrast

  844. Luke sets before us

  845. is between hearing

  846. and seeking signs

  847. in verses 27 to 32.

  848. Having addressed

  849. the slanderers

  850. who were smearing

  851. his ministry,

  852. now he's turning

  853. to address the skeptics

  854. who were trying

  855. to test him,

  856. questioning him

  857. and asking for a sign.

  858. But before he does that,

  859. there's a brief intermission

  860. that kind of sets up

  861. his following teaching.

  862. It says in verse 27,

  863. verse 27,

  864. As Jesus said these things,

  865. a woman in the crowd

  866. raised her voice

  867. and said to him,

  868. Blessed is the womb

  869. that bore you

  870. and the breasts

  871. at which you nursed.

  872. Among a sea of people

  873. who are attributing

  874. Jesus' work

  875. to the work of Beelzebul

  876. and otherwise,

  877. other people

  878. who are questioning him,

  879. there is a faithful woman,

  880. one woman who actually

  881. believes what Jesus

  882. is teaching

  883. and she pronounces

  884. the blessedness

  885. of the mother

  886. who bore Jesus,

  887. which is an indirect way

  888. of praising Jesus himself.

  889. It's like saying,

  890. Hey, I'm so thankful

  891. that you were born.

  892. You're saying,

  893. you're expressing thanks

  894. for that person,

  895. gratefulness to that person.

  896. And what this woman

  897. is saying is quite true.

  898. In fact,

  899. it's confirmed

  900. by Luke himself.

  901. In Luke chapter 1,

    Luke 1:42

  902. verse 42,

  903. Elizabeth said of Mary,

  904. mother of Jesus,

  905. Blessed are you among women

  906. and blessed is the fruit

  907. of your womb.

  908. And Mary herself,

  909. after learning

  910. that she will give birth

  911. to the Messiah

  912. and conceive Jesus

  913. by the Holy Spirit,

  914. she said in chapter 1,

  915. verse 47 to 48,

  916. My soul magnifies the Lord

  917. and my spirit rejoices

  918. in God my Savior,

  919. for he has looked on

  920. the humble estate

  921. of his servant,

  922. for behold,

  923. from now on,

  924. all generations

  925. will call me blessed.

  926. So what this woman

  927. is saying is very true.

  928. Mary is blessed.

  929. The womb that bore Jesus

  930. is blessed.

  931. But Jesus doesn't want

  932. the people listening to him

  933. to focus on the blessedness

  934. of his blood family.

  935. So he responds in verse 28,

  936. Blessed rather are those

  937. who hear the word of God

  938. and keep it.

  939. This is very similar to

  940. what Jesus said earlier

  941. in chapter 8.

  942. Then his mother

  943. and his brothers came to him,

  944. but they could not reach him

  945. because of the crowd.

  946. And he was told,

  947. Your mother and your brothers

  948. are standing outside.

  949. I desire to see you.

  950. But he answered them,

  951. My mother and my brothers

  952. are those who hear

  953. the word of God

  954. and do it.

  955. Again and again

  956. throughout the Gospel of Luke,

  957. Jesus expresses the priority

  958. of the faith family

  959. over the blood family.

  960. This is not because

  961. caring for our family members

  962. is unimportant.

  963. Scripture in other places

  964. clearly commands that.

  965. We're called to honor

  966. our father and mother.

  967. We're called to care

  968. for relatives

  969. in 1 Timothy 5.8.

  970. But it's because

  971. Jesus is responding

  972. to the word of God

  973. that Jesus repeatedly

  974. hammers home.

  975. It's because these people

  976. are responding

  977. to the word of God

  978. that Jesus proclaimed

  979. that we are to respond

  980. with faith and obedience

  981. because that message

  982. is so urgent.

  983. Jesus doesn't want

  984. the crowd to get caught up

  985. in the VIP status

  986. of his family members.

  987. Oh wow,

  988. that's Jesus' mother

  989. over there.

  990. Wow,

  991. that's his brother.

  992. These things

  993. do not have

  994. eternal consequence.

  995. How you respond

  996. to the proclamation

  997. of the Gospel.

  998. Whether you respond

  999. in faith

  1000. and obedience

  1001. or not to Jesus,

  1002. that has

  1003. eternal consequence.

  1004. So you should be

  1005. concerned about that

  1006. instead of being

  1007. fascinated

  1008. with this.

  1009. blessed rather

  1010. are those

  1011. who hear the word

  1012. of God

  1013. and keep it.

  1014. It is blessed

  1015. to be the earthly

  1016. mother of Jesus.

  1017. Yes,

  1018. that's true.

1019. But it is more blessed

  1020. to become

  1021. an adopted

  1022. child of God

  1023. by hearing

  1024. and keeping

  1025. the word of God.

  1026. Sometimes we can

  1027. get prideful

  1028. and give

  1029. undue

  1030. weight

  1031. to our

  1032. spiritual pedigree.

  1033. some of us

  1034. have had

  1035. faithful

  1036. godly parents,

  1037. even

  1038. grandparents.

  1039. Perhaps

  1040. some of us

  1041. are descended

  1042. from famous

  1043. spiritual giants

  1044. of ages past

  1045. or related

  1046. to some

  1047. Christian celebrity.

  1048. Some of us

  1049. have great

  1050. training,

  1051. theological

  1052. education.

  1053. having

  1054. godly

  1055. parents,

  1056. having

  1057. those

  1058. relations

  1059. is a

  1060. blessing

  1061. and a

  1062. privilege,

  1063. of course.

  1064. But what

  1065. matters is

  1066. whether or

  1067. not we

  1068. hear the

  1069. word of

  1070. God

  1071. and keep

  1072. it.

  1073. Being

  1074. related to

  1075. a godly

  1076. person does

  1077. not make

  1078. us godly.

  1079. What matters

  1080. is that we

  1081. own our

  1082. faith

  1083. and obey

  1084. God

  1085. ourselves.

  1086. after

  1087. emphasizing

  1088. the

  1089. necessity

  1090. of

  1091. hearing

  1092. and

  1093. keeping

  1094. God's

  1095. word,

  1096. Jesus

  1097. continues

  1098. his

  1099. teaching

  1100. in

  1101. verses

  1102. 29

  1103. to

  1104. 32.

  1105. Here

  1106. his

  1107. focus

  1108. is on

  1109. those

  1110. others

  1111. earlier

  1112. that

  1113. were

  1114. questioning

  1115. him

  1116. and

  1117. testing

  1118. him

  1119. and

  1120. seeking

  1121. a

  1122. sign

  1123. from

  1124. heaven.

  1125. He

  1126. says

  1127. in

  1128. verses

  1129. 29

  1130. to

  1131. 30,

  1132. this

  1133. generation

  1134. is

  1135. an

  1136. evil

  1137. generation.

  1138. He

  1139. seeks

  1140. for

  1141. a

  1142. sign

  1143. but

  1144. no

  1145. sign

  1146. will

  1147. be

  1148. given

  1149. to

  1150. it

  1151. except

  1152. the

  1153. sign

  1154. of

  1155. Jonah.

  1156. For

  1157. as

  1158. Jonah

  1159. became

  1160. a

  1161. sign

  1162. to

  1163. the

  1164. people

  1165. of

  1166. Nineveh

  1167. so

  1168. will

  1169. the

  1170. son

  1171. of

  1172. man

  1173. be

  1174. to

  1175. this

  1176. generation.

  1177. These

  1178. people

  1179. keep in

  1180. mind

  1181. just

  1182. witnessed

  1183. Jesus

  1184. heal

  1185. a

  1186. mute

  1187. man

  1188. by

  1189. casting

  1190. out

  1191. a

  1192. demon

  1193. but

  1194. they

  1195. are

  1196. still

  1197. seeking

  1198. a

  1199. sign

  1200. from

  1201. heaven.

  1202. These

  1203. are

  1204. great

  1205. examples

  1206. to point

  1207. out

  1208. whenever

  1209. people

  1210. ask

  1211. for

  1212. signs

  1213. like

  1214. hey

  1215. if

  1216. God

  1217. were

  1218. to

  1219. prove

  1220. himself

  1221. to

  1222. me

  1223. in

  1224. this

  1225. way

  1226. then

  1227. I

  1228. would

  1229. that

  1230. they

  1231. still

  1232. don't

  1233. believe

  1234. there

  1235. is

  1236. no

  1237. such

  1238. proof

  1239. that

  1240. would

  1241. relieve

  1242. all

  1243. doubts

  1244. at

  1245. some

  1246. point

  1247. you

  1248. must

  1249. take

  1250. that

  1251. step

  1252. of

  1253. faith

  1254. and

  1255. this

  1256. betrays

  1257. these

  1258. people's

  1259. doubting

  1260. hearts

  1261. they

  1262. are

  1263. faithless

  1264. not

  1265. because

  1266. they

  1267. lack

  1268. the

  1269. sign

  1270. but

  1271. because

  1272. of

  1273. the

  1274. sinfulness

  1275. of

  1276. their

  1277. hearts

  1278. their

  1279. skepticism

  1280. is

  1281. not

  1282. a

  1283. fair

  1284. minded

  1285. skepticism

  1286. but

  1287. a

  1288. biased

  1289. one

  1290. it's

  1291. a

  1292. settled

  1293. skepticism

  1294. that

  1295. will

  1296. admit

  1297. no

  1298. evidence

  1299. that

  1300. forces

  1301. them

  1302. to

  1303. change

  1304. their

  1305. position

  1306. so

  1307. the

  1308. crowd

  1309. skepticism

  1310. is

  1311. similar

  1312. to

  1313. what

  1314. we

  1315. saw

  1316. with

  1317. with

  1318. king

  1319. herod

  1320. early

  1321. in

  1322. luke

  1323. 9

  1324. herod

  1325. too

  1326. had

  1327. heard

  1328. of

  1329. jesus

  1330. but

  1331. instead

  1332. of

  1333. believing

  1334. him

  1335. he

  1336. sought

  1337. to

  1338. see

  1339. him

  1340. because

  1341. he

  1342. wanted

  1343. him

  1344. to

  1345. perform

  1346. some

  1347. sign

  1348. for

  1349. him

  1350. as

  1351. we

  1352. see

  1353. later

  1354. in

  1355. luke

  1356. 23

  1357. 8

  1358. Romans

  1359. 10

  1360. 17

  1361. tells

  1362. us

  1363. clearly

  1364. faith

  1365. comes

  1366. from

  1367. hearing

  1368. and

  1369. hearing

  1370. and

  1371. keeping

  1372. the

  1373. word

  1374. instead

  1375. of

  1376. pandering

  1377. to

  1378. their

  1379. presumptuous

  1380. demands

  1381. for

  1382. a

  1383. sign

  1384. from

  1385. heaven

  1386. and

  1387. jesus

  1388. did

  1389. throughout

  1390. his

  1391. ministry

  1392. perform

  1393. signs

  1394. and

  1395. wonders

  1396. and

  1397. he

  1398. used

  1399. that

  1400. to

  1401. help

  1402. people

  1403. who

  1404. were

  1405. genuinely

  1406. seeking

  1407. him

  1408. and

  1409. wanted

  1410. to

  1411. believe

  1412. in

  1413. him

  1414. but

  1415. he

  1416. does

  1417. not

  1418. pander

  1419. to

  1420. indulge

  1421. the

  1422. whims

  1423. of

  1424. people

  1425. who

  1426. have

  1427. a

  1428. settled

  1429. skepticism

  1430. of

  1431. faithless

  1432. generation

  1433. instead

  1434. he

  1435. rebukes

  1436. them

  1437. because

  1438. following

  1439. God

  1440. requires

  1441. faith

  1442. and

  1443. humility

  1444. to

  1445. take

  1446. God

  1447. at

  1448. his

  1449. word

  1450. and

  1451. submit

  1452. to

  1453. and

  1454. those

  1455. people

  1456. who

  1457. will

  1460. God

  1461. on

  1462. his

  1464. will

  1466. obey

  1467. God

  1468. on

  1469. his

  1471. either

  1472. those

  1473. who

  1474. demand

  1475. some

  1476. kind

  1477. of

  1478. miracle

  1479. a sign

  1480. on

  1481. demand

  1482. that

  1483. will

  1484. remove

  1485. all

  1486. doubt

  1487. show

  1488. that

  1489. they're

  1490. not

  1491. willing

  1492. to

  1493. submit

  1494. to

  1495. God

  1496. in

  1497. every

  1498. aspect

  1499. of

  1500. their

  1501. life

  1502. they

  1503. will

  1504. seek

  1505. to

  1506. conform

  1507. God

  1508. to

  1509. their

  1511. purposes

  1512. as

  1513. even

  1514. after

  1515. and

  1523. except

  1524. the

  1525. sign

  1526. of

  1527. Jonah

  1528. in

  1529. a

  1530. similar

  1531. verse

  1532. in

  1533. Matthew

  1534. 12

  1535. 40

  1536. Jesus

  1537. makes

  1538. the

  1540. connection

  1541. between

  1542. the

  1543. sign

  1544. of

  1545. Jonah

  1546. because

  1547. Jonah

  1548. was

  1549. three

  1550. days

  1551. and

  1552. three

  1553. nights

  1554. in

  1555. the

  1556. belly

  1557. of

  1558. a

  1559. great

  1560. fish

  1561. and

  1562. Jesus

  1563. will

  1564. be

  1565. three

  1567. in

  1568. the

  1569. heart

  1570. of

  1573. so

  1574. there

  1575. the

  1579. to

  1580. Jesus

  1581. death

  1582. and

  1584. but

  1585. here

  1586. in

  1587. the

  1588. gospel

  1589. of

  1590. Luke

  1591. the

  1592. focus

  1593. is

  1594. different

  1595. Luke

  1596. is

  1597. focusing

  1598. on

  1599. a

  1600. different

  1601. point

  1602. with

  1603. the

  1604. comparison

  1605. to

  1606. Jonah

  1607. here

  1608. the

  1610. of

  1611. contact

  1612. between

  1613. Jonah

  1614. and

  1615. Jesus

  1616. is

  1626. the

  1627. belly

  1628. of

  1631. but

  1632. it's

  1640. of

  1644. became

  1645. a

  1678. and

  1679. we

  2061. the

  2062. fact

  2063. that

  2064. we

  2065. as

  2066. followers

  2067. of

  2068. Christ

  2069. are

  2070. the

  2071. light

  2072. of

  2073. the

  2074. world

  2075. and

  2076. that

  2077. we

  2078. are

  2079. to

  2080. let

  2081. that

  2082. shine

  2083. by

  2084. doing

  2085. good

  2086. works

  2087. in

  2088. the

  2089. world

  2090. but

  2091. in

  2092. Luke

  2093. the

  2094. emphasis

  2095. is

  2096. not

  2097. on

  2098. our

  2099. identity

  2100. as

  2101. the

  2102. light

  2103. of

  2104. the

  2105. world

  2106. rather

  2107. it's

  2108. on

  2109. the

  2110. fact

  2111. that

  2112. Jesus

  2113. is

  2114. the

  2115. light

  2116. of

  2117. the

  2118. world

  2119. and

  2120. he

  2121. is

  2122. through

  2123. his

  2124. public

  2125. ministry

  2126. shining

  2127. his

  2128. light

  2129. on

  2130. us

  2131. and

  2132. so

  2133. the

  2134. focus

  2135. in

  2136. Luke

  2137. is

  2138. not

  2139. on

  2140. us

  2141. shining

  2142. it

  2143. but

  2144. on

  2145. Jesus

  2146. shining

  2147. his

  2148. light

  2149. and

  2150. our

  2151. response

  2152. to

  2153. our

  2154. by

  2155. believing

  2156. and

  2157. receiving

  2158. that

  2159. light

  2160. so

  2161. Matthew

  2162. emphasizes

  2163. so

  2164. we

  2165. are

  2166. to

  2167. believe

  2168. in

  2169. the

  2170. good

  2171. news

  2172. of

  2173. Jesus

  2174. Christ

  2175. so

  2176. that

  2177. we

  2178. do

  2179. the

  2180. good

  2181. works

  2182. for

  2183. Jesus

  2184. Christ

  2185. and

  2186. Matthew

  2187. emphasizes

  2188. the

  2189. latter

  2190. doing

  2191. good

  2192. works

  2193. Luke

  2194. emphasizes

  2195. the

  2196. former

  2197. so

  2198. Matthew

  2199. tells us

  2200. to be

  2201. the

  2202. light

  2203. Luke

  2204. tells

  2205. us

  2206. to

  2207. see

  2208. the

  2209. light

  2210. and

  2211. that's

  2212. the

  2213. point

  2214. here

  2215. because

  2216. in

  2217. the

  2218. narrative

  2219. of

  2220. Jesus'

  2221. birth

  2222. in

  2223. Luke

    Luke 1 chapter mention

  2224. chapter

  2225. 1

  2226. Jesus

  2227. is

  2228. called

  2229. the

  2230. sunrise

  2231. that

  2232. visits

  2233. God's

  2234. people

  2235. from

  2236. on

  2237. high

  2238. to

  2239. give

  2240. light

  2241. to

  2242. those

  2243. who

  2244. sit

  2245. in

  2246. darkness

  2247. likewise

  2248. in

  2249. Luke

    Luke 2:32

  2250. chapter

  2251. 2

  2252. verse

  2253. 32

  2254. Jesus

  2255. says

  2256. that

  2257. he

  2258. will

  2259. be

  2260. a

  2261. light

  2262. for

  2263. the

  2264. revelation

  2265. to

  2266. the

  2267. Gentiles

  2268. and

  2269. for

  2270. glory

  2271. to

  2272. God's

  2273. people

  2274. Israel

  2275. so

  2276. in

  2277. our

  2278. passage

  2279. also

  2280. Jesus

  2281. is

  2282. the

  2283. lamp

  2284. the

  2285. lit

  2286. lamp

  2287. that

  2288. should

  2289. be

  2290. placed

  2291. on

  2292. a

  2293. stand

  2294. so

  2295. that

  2296. those

  2297. who

  2298. enter

  2299. may

  2300. see

  2301. the

  2302. light

  2303. it's

  2304. the

  2305. light

  2306. that

  2307. divides

  2308. those

  2309. in

  2310. darkness

  2311. and

  2312. those

  2313. in

  2314. the

  2315. light

  2316. Jesus

  2317. shining

  2318. the

  2319. light

  2320. Jesus

  2321. uses

  2322. that

  2323. illustration

  2324. further

  2325. in

  2326. verses

  2327. 34

  2328. to

  2329. 36

  2330. your

  2331. eye

  2332. is

  2333. the

  2334. lamp

  2335. of

  2336. your

  2337. body

  2338. when

  2339. your

  2340. eye

  2341. is

  2342. healthy

  2343. your

  2344. whole

  2345. body

  2346. is

  2347. full

  2348. of

  2349. light

  2350. but

  2351. when

  2352. it

  2353. is

  2354. bad

  2355. your

  2356. body

  2357. is

  2358. full

  2359. of

  2360. darkness

  2361. therefore

  2362. be

  2363. careful

  2364. lest

  2365. the

  2366. light

  2367. in

  2368. you

  2369. be

  2370. darkness

  2371. if

  2372. then

  2373. your

  2374. whole

  2375. body

  2376. is

  2377. full

  2378. of

  2379. light

  2380. having

  2381. no

  2382. part

  2383. dark

  2384. it

  2385. will

  2386. be

  2387. holy

  2388. bright

  2389. as

  2390. when

  2391. a

  2392. lamp

  2393. with

  2394. its

  2395. rays

  2396. gives

  2397. you

  2398. light

  2399. so

  2400. receiving

  2401. light

  2402. through

  2403. the

  2404. eye

  2405. is

  2406. a

  2407. metaphor

  2408. for

  2409. receiving

  2410. Christ's

  2411. message

  2412. through

  2413. faith

  2414. and

  2415. believing

  2416. it

  2417. in

  2418. your

  2419. heart

  2420. and

  2421. that's

  2422. why

  2423. 2nd

  2424. Corinthians

  2425. 4

  2426. 6

  2427. it

  2428. says

  2429. God

  2430. who

  2431. said

  2432. let

  2433. light

  2434. shine

  2435. out

  2436. of

  2437. darkness

  2438. has

  2439. shown

  2440. in

  2441. our

  2442. hearts

  2443. to

  2444. give

  2445. the

  2446. light

  2447. of

  2448. the

  2449. knowledge

  2450. of

  2451. the

  2452. glory

  2453. of

  2454. God

  2455. in

  2456. the

  2457. face

  2458. of

  2459. Jesus

  2460. Christ

  2461. the

  2462. eye

  2463. stands

  2464. for

  2465. the

  2466. light

  2467. and

  2468. the

  2469. whole

  2470. body

  2471. becomes

  2472. full

  2473. of

  2474. light

  2475. and

  2476. the

  2477. word

  2478. that

  2479. is

  2480. translated

  2481. healthy

  2482. literally

  2483. means

  2484. focused

  2485. it

  2486. means

  2487. it

  2488. refers

  2489. to

  2490. having

  2491. singleness

  2492. of

  2493. purpose

  2494. so

  2495. if

  2496. our

  2497. spiritual

  2498. eye

  2499. is

  2500. focused

  2501. it's

  2502. open

  2503. and

  2504. it's

  2505. determined

  2506. and

  2507. it's

  2508. focused

  2509. on

  2510. Christ

  2511. then

  2512. we

  2513. are

  2514. able

  2515. to

  2516. perceive

  2517. the

  2518. light

  2519. of

  2520. Christ

  2521. so

  2522. that

  2523. it

  2524. gives

  2525. a

  2526. sight

  2527. and

  2528. we're

  2529. able

  2530. to

  2531. see

  2532. everything

  2533. and

  2534. have

  2535. light

  2536. in

  2537. our

  2538. lives

  2539. so

  2540. when

  2541. you

  2542. hear

  2543. the

  2544. word

  2545. of

  2546. God

  2547. and

  2548. keep

  2549. it

  2550. that's

  2551. how

  2552. you

  2553. become

  2554. spiritually

  2555. healthy

  2556. and

  2557. radiate

  2558. the

  2559. light

  2560. of

  2561. Christ

  2562. it's

  2563. again

  2564. either

  2565. or

  2566. it's

  2567. not

  2568. a

  2569. both

  2570. end

  2571. you

  2572. either

  2573. have

  2574. a

  2575. functioning

  2576. eye

  2577. of

  2578. eye

  2579. of

  2580. the

  2581. heart

  2582. and

  2583. see

  2584. the

  2585. light

  2586. of

  2587. Christ

  2588. and

  2589. receive

  2590. it

  2591. or

  2592. you're

  2593. blind

  2594. and

  2595. you

  2596. live

  2597. in

  2598. darkness

  2599. if

  2600. you're

  2601. not

  2602. yet

  2603. a

  2604. follower

  2605. of

  2606. Jesus

  2607. Christ

  2608. and

  2609. you're

  2610. here

  2611. with

  2612. us

  2613. then

  2614. I

  2615. urge

  2616. you

  2617. to

  2618. receive

  2619. this

  2620. light

  2621. of

  2622. Christ

  2623. because

  2624. no

  2625. sign

  2626. will

  2627. be

  2628. given

  2629. to

  2630. you

  2631. except

  2632. the

  2633. sign

  2634. of

  2635. Jonah

  2636. Jonah

  2637. was

  2638. a

  2639. sign

  2640. to

  2641. the

  2642. people

  2643. of

  2644. Nineveh

  2645. of

  2646. their

  2647. need

  2648. to

  2649. repent

  2650. of

  2651. their

  2652. sins

  2653. and

  2654. turn

  2655. to

  2656. God

  2657. and

  2658. you

  2659. too

  2660. have

  2661. this

  2662. morning

  2663. received

  2664. that

  2665. same

  2666. sign

  2667. in

  2668. the

  2669. reading

  2670. and

  2671. preaching

  2672. of

  2673. God's

  2674. word

  2675. so

  2676. will

  2677. you

  2678. turn

  2679. then

  2680. from

  2681. your

  2682. self

  2683. focused

  2684. and

  2685. oriented

  2686. life

  2687. to

  2688. living

  2689. a

  2690. God

  2691. oriented

  2692. God

  2693. centered

  2694. life

  2695. C.S.

  2696. Lewis

  2697. the

  2698. famous

  2699. Oxford

  2700. professor

  2701. and

  2702. atheist

  2703. who

  2704. became

  2705. a

  2706. Christian

  2707. later

  2708. in

  2709. life

  2710. said

  2711. this

  2712. I

  2713. believe

  2714. in

  2715. Christianity

  2716. as I

  2717. believe

  2718. that

  2719. the

  2720. sun

  2721. has

  2722. risen

  2723. not

  2724. only

  2725. because

  2726. I

  2727. see

  2728. it

  2729. but

  2730. because

  2731. by

  2732. it

  2733. I

  2734. see

  2735. everything

  2736. else

  2737. when

  2738. you

  2739. receive

  2740. the

  2741. light

  2742. of

  2743. Christ

  2744. through

  2745. faith

  2746. his

  2747. light

  2748. illuminates

  2749. everything

  2750. else

  2751. in

  2752. our

  2753. lives

  2754. so

  2755. that

  2756. we

  2757. can

  2758. exclaim

  2759. like

  2760. all

  2761. believers

  2762. do

  2763. I

  2764. once

  2765. was

  2766. blind

  2767. but

  2768. now

  2769. I

  2770. see

  2771. you

  2772. can't

  2773. wait

  2774. for

  2775. a

  2776. sign

  2777. to

  2778. prove

  2779. to

  2780. you

  2781. don't

  2782. wait

  2783. to

  2784. see

  2785. in

  2786. order

  2787. to

  2788. believe

  2789. but

  2790. believe

  2791. that

  2792. you

  2793. might

  2794. see

  2795. and

  2796. this

  2797. teaching

  2798. is

  2799. also

  2800. a

  2801. sobering

  2802. warning

  2803. to

  2804. any

  2805. Christian

  2806. that

  2807. is

  2808. trying

  2809. to

  2810. straddle

  2811. both

  2812. light

  2813. and

  2814. darkness

  2815. as

  2816. Colossians

  2817. 1

  2818. 13

  2819. to

  2820. 14

  2821. says

  2822. God

  2823. has

  2824. delivered

  2825. us

  2826. from

  2827. the

  2828. domain

  2829. of

  2830. darkness

  2831. and

  2832. transferred

  2833. us

  2834. to

  2835. the

  2836. kingdom

  2837. of

  2838. his

  2839. beloved

  2840. son

  2841. in

  2842. whom

  2843. we

  2845. redemption

  2846. the

  2847. forgiveness

  2848. of

  2849. sins

  2850. we

  2851. we

  2852. were

  2853. all

  2854. sinners

  2855. under

  2856. the

  2857. oppression

  2858. of

  2859. Satan

  2860. the

  2868. to

  2869. sin

  2870. by

  2871. the

  2872. strong

  2873. one

  2874. but

  2875. God

  2876. sent

  2877. his

  2878. son

  2879. Jesus

  2880. Christ

  2881. as

  2882. our

  2883. champion

  2884. he's

  2885. the

  2886. stronger

  2887. one

  2888. who

  2889. defeats

  2890. Beelzebul

  2891. and

  2892. he

  2893. does

  2894. this

  2895. by

  2896. dying

  2897. on

  2898. the

  2899. cross

  2900. for

  2901. our

  2902. sins

  2903. so

  2904. that

  2905. we

  2906. are

  2907. freed

  2908. from

  2909. the

  2910. guilt

  2911. and

  2912. the

  2913. penalty

  2914. of

  2915. sin

  2916. so

  2917. that

  2918. the

  2919. strong

  2920. one

  2921. the

  2922. Beelzebul

  2923. does

  2924. not

  2925. have

  2926. any

  2927. claim

  2928. on

  2929. us

  2930. anymore

  2931. he

  2932. does

  2933. not

  2934. have

  2935. any

  2936. legal

  2937. claim

  2938. on

  2939. us

  2940. to

  2941. keep

  2942. us

  2943. bound

  2944. because

  2945. we

  2946. have

  2947. been

  2948. freed

  2949. from

  2950. our

  2951. slavery

  2952. to

  2953. sin

  2954. we

  2955. were

  2956. all

  2957. once

  2958. ignorant

  2959. sinners

  2960. groping

  2961. in the

  2962. darkness

  2963. not

  2964. knowing

  2965. our

  2966. way

  2967. out

  2968. seeking

  2969. something

  2970. to

  2971. show

  2972. us

  2973. a

  2974. way

  2975. but

  2976. Jesus

  2977. came

  2978. as

  2979. the

  2980. light

  2981. to

  2982. illuminate

  2983. the

  2984. eyes

  2985. of

  2986. our

  2987. hearts

  2988. so

  2989. that

  2990. we

  2991. might

  2992. see

  2993. and

  2994. follow

  2995. the

  2996. way

  2997. that

  2998. he

  2999. shines

  3000. for

  3001. us

  3002. there

  3003. is

  3004. a

  3005. decisive

  3006. break

  3007. that

  3008. takes

  3009. place

  3010. when

  3011. we

  3012. become

  3013. a

  3014. Christian

  3015. between

  3016. light

  3017. and

  3018. darkness

  3019. you

  3020. can't

  3021. keep

  3022. one

  3023. foot

  3024. in

  3025. the

  3026. kingdom

  3027. of

  3028. Satan

  3029. and

  3030. one

  3031. kingdom

  3032. one

  3033. the

  3034. other

  3035. foot

  3036. in

  3037. the

  3038. kingdom

  3039. of

  3040. God

  3041. becoming

  3042. a

  3043. Christian

  3044. means

  3045. we

  3046. renounce

  3047. our

  3048. sinful

  3049. flesh

  3050. and

  3051. selfish

  3052. pride

  3053. and

  3054. a

  3055. Christian

  3056. that's

  3057. why

  3058. by

  3059. definition

  3060. is

  3061. someone

  3062. who

  3063. turns

  3064. toward

  3065. Jesus

  3066. in

  3067. faith

  3068. so

  3069. is

  3070. there

  3071. in

  3072. your

  3073. life

  3074. a

  3075. sin

  3076. that

  3077. you

  3078. are

  3079. harboring

  3080. are

  3081. you

  3082. willfully

  3083. disobeying

  3084. the

  3085. clear

  3086. commands

  3087. of

  3088. scripture

  3089. have

  3090. you

  3091. resigned

  3092. yourself

  3093. to

  3094. sinful

  3095. habits

  3096. a

  3097. Christian

  3098. still

  3099. sins

  3100. yes

  3101. but

  3102. it

  3103. is

  3104. never

  3105. an

  3106. unrepentant

  3107. sin

  3108. a

  3109. sin

  3110. that

  3111. we

  3112. resign

  3113. ourselves

  3114. to

  3115. no

  3116. a

  3117. Christian

  3118. renounces

  3119. sin

  3120. we

  3121. bring

  3122. it

  3123. to

  3124. the

  3125. cross

  3126. daily

  3127. to

  3128. Jesus

  3129. Christ

  3130. and

  3131. after

  3132. each

  3133. occasion

  3134. and

  3135. a

  3136. Christian

  3137. fights

  3138. for

  3139. holiness

  3140. daily

  3141. then

  3142. strive

  3143. to

  3144. put

  3145. that

  3146. sinful

  3147. flesh

  3148. to

  3149. death

  3150. that's

  3151. what

  3152. it

  3153. means

  3154. to

  3155. be

  3156. a

  3157. Christian

  3158. light

  3159. cannot

  3160. reside

  3161. in

  3162. a

  3163. room

  3164. without

  3165. repelling

  3166. the

  3167. darkness

  3168. 1st

  3169. John

  3170. 1

  3171. puts

  3172. it

  3173. this

  3174. way

  3175. this

  3176. is

  3177. the

  3178. message

  3179. we

  3180. have

  3181. heard

  3182. from

  3183. him

  3184. and

  3185. proclaim

  3186. to

  3187. you

  3188. that

  3189. God

  3190. is

  3191. light

  3192. and

  3193. in

  3194. him

  3195. is

  3196. no

  3197. darkness

  3198. at

  3199. all

  3200. if

  3201. we

  3202. say

  3203. we

  3204. have

  3205. fellowship

  3206. with

  3207. him

  3208. while

  3209. we

  3210. walk

  3211. in

  3212. darkness

  3213. we

  3214. lie

  3215. and

  3216. do

  3217. not

  3218. practice

  3219. the

  3220. truth

  3221. but

  3222. if

  3223. we

  3224. walk

  3225. in

  3226. the

  3227. light

  3228. as

  3229. he

  3230. is

  3231. in

  3232. the

  3233. light

  3234. we

  3235. have

  3236. fellowship

  3237. with

  3238. one

  3239. another

  3240. and

  3241. the

  3242. blood

  3243. of

  3244. Jesus

  3245. his

  3246. son

  3247. cleanses

  3248. us

  3249. from

  3250. all

  3251. sin

  3252. this

  3253. is

  3254. why

  3255. we

  3256. can

  3257. confess

  3258. our

  3259. sins

  3260. to

  3261. one

  3262. another

  3263. this

  3264. is

  3265. why

  3266. we

  3267. can

  3268. bring

  3269. our

  3270. sins

  3271. to

  3272. light

  3273. this

  3274. is

  3275. why

  3276. we

  3277. can

  3278. come

  3279. to

  3280. Jesus

  3281. instead

  3282. of

  3283. hiding

  3284. in

  3285. our

  3286. shame

  3287. and

  3288. cowering

  3289. we

  3290. can

  3291. bring

  3292. it

  3293. to

  3294. Jesus

  3295. because

  3296. we

  3297. know

  3298. that

  3299. when

  3300. we

  3301. do

  3302. when

  3303. we

  3304. walk

  3305. in

  3306. the

  3307. light

  3308. our

  3309. sins

  3310. are

  3311. exposed

  3312. it

  3313. loses

  3314. its

  3315. power

  3316. Christ

  3317. heals

  3318. us

  3319. and

  3320. his

  3321. light

  3322. fills

  3323. us

  3324. the

  3325. blood

  3326. of

  3327. Christ

  3328. washes

  3329. us

  3330. away

  3331. from

  3332. our

  3333. sins

  3334. and

  3335. it's

  3336. in

  3337. doing

  3338. that

  3339. in

  3340. repentance

  3341. and

  3342. obedience

  3343. in

  3344. repentance

  3345. and

  3346. faith

  3347. in

  3348. repentance

  3349. and

  3350. faith

  3351. again

  3352. and

  3353. again

  3354. in

  3355. day

  3356. to

  3357. day

  3358. walk

  3359. repenting

  3360. again

  3361. and

  3362. believing

  3363. in

  3364. Jesus

  3365. again

  3366. for

  3367. the

  3368. forgiveness

  3369. of

  3370. sins

  3371. that's

  3372. how

  3373. we

  3374. make

  3375. progress

  3376. in

  3377. our

  3378. walk

  3379. in

  3380. our

  3381. obedience

  3382. in

  3383. our

  3384. sanctification

  3385. in

  3386. our

  3387. day to

  3388. day

  3389. experience

  3390. this

  3391. might

  3392. feel

  3393. really

  3394. slow

  3395. just

  3396. like

  3397. the

  3398. way

  3399. we

  3400. experience

  3401. light

  3402. it

  3403. seems

  3404. instantaneous

  3405. to

  3406. us

  3407. right

  3408. when

  3409. there's

  3410. light

  3411. or

  3412. when

  3413. you

  3414. click

  3415. on

  3416. the

  3417. switch

  3418. flip

  3419. on

  3420. the

  3421. switch

  3422. light

  3423. just

  3424. comes

  3425. immediately

  3426. it

  3427. seems

  3428. instantaneous

  3429. to

  3430. us

  3431. because

  3432. light

  3433. is

  3434. so

  3435. quick

  3436. but

  3437. when

  3438. you

  3439. slow

  3440. it

  3441. way

  3442. down

  3443. you

  3444. can

  3445. actually

  3446. see

  3447. light

  3448. moving

  3449. light

  3450. spreading

  3451. our

  3452. life

  3453. even

  3454. though

  3455. it

  3456. seems

  3457. like

  3458. a

  3459. long

  3460. time

  3461. in

  3462. light

  3463. of

  3464. eternity

  3465. is

  3466. just

  3467. the

  3468. moment

  3469. we

  3470. are

  3471. living

  3472. in

  3473. that

  3474. moment

  3475. that

  3476. slow

  3477. down

  3478. moment

  3479. when

  3480. that

  3481. light

  3482. is

  3483. filling

  3484. the

  3485. room

  3486. it's

  3487. hard

  3488. for

  3489. us

  3490. sometimes

  3491. to

  3492. see

  3493. it

  3494. moving

  3495. but

  3496. when

  3497. you

  3498. look

  3499. back

  3500. on

  3501. your

  3502. life

  3503. five

  3504. years

  3505. ago

  3506. even

  3507. a

  3508. year

  3509. ago

  3510. you

  3511. see

  3512. the

  3513. progress

  3514. that's

  3515. been

  3516. made

  3517. you

  3518. see

  3519. how

  3520. previously

  3521. dark

  3522. spots

  3523. have

  3524. been

  3525. lit

  3526. that's

  3527. our

  3528. life

  3529. but

  3530. this

  3531. is

  3532. just

  3533. a

  3534. moment

  3535. on

  3536. the

  3537. way

  3538. to

  3539. eternity

  3540. when

  3541. we

  3542. will

  3543. be

  3544. filled

  3545. for

  3546. eternity

  3547. with

  3548. the

  3549. fullness

  3550. of

  3551. the

  3552. light

  3553. of

  3554. Christ

  3555. I

  3556. hope

  3557. that

  3558. gives

  3559. you

  3560. hope

  3561. today

  3562. in

  3563. your

  3564. battle

  3565. in

  3566. your

  3567. walk

  3568. with

  3569. Christ

  3570. please

  3571. reflect

  3572. on

  3573. that

  3574. truth

  3575. for

  3576. a

  3577. moment

  3578. and

  3579. we'll

  3580. respond

  3581. together

  3582. by

  3583. praying

  3584. actually

  3585. you

  3586. know

  3587. what

  3588. I'm

  3589. going to

  3590. pray

  3591. for us

  3592. now

  3593. because

  3594. we have

  3595. a slightly

  3596. different

  3597. plan

  3598. for this

  3599. prayer

  3600. this

  3601. morning

  3602. God

  3603. we pray

  3604. that you

  3605. will help

  3606. us

  3607. to live

  3608. with

  3609. this reality

  3610. ever present

  3611. before us

  3612. that

  3613. Jesus

  3614. who is

  3615. the light

  3616. of the

  3617. world

  3618. has shown

  3619. into our

  3620. hearts

  3621. that

  3622. we

  3623. have

  3624. received

  3625. him

  3626. and

  3627. that

  3628. we

  3629. are

  3630. increasingly

  3631. more

  3632. and

  3633. more

  3634. becoming

  3635. his

  3636. little

  3637. lights

  3638. the

  3639. conduits

  3640. of

  3641. his

  3642. light

  3643. reflectors

  3644. of

  3645. his

  3646. light

  3647. and

  3648. Lord

  3649. we

  3650. pray

  3651. that

  3652. you

  3653. will

  3654. blot

  3655. out

  3656. the

  3657. darkness

  3658. that

  3659. lingers

  3660. that

  3661. you

  3662. will

  3663. light

  3664. them

  3665. up

  3666. in

  3667. the

  3668. glory

  3669. of

  3670. Christ

  3671. that

  3672. you

  3673. would

  3674. daily

  3675. bring
