  1. 1137 to 54. I'll read it out loud for us.

  2. While Jesus was speaking, a Pharisee asked him to dine with him.

  3. So he went in and reclined at table.

  4. The Pharisee was astonished to see that he did not first wash before dinner.

  5. And the Lord said to him,

  6. Now, you Pharisees, cleanse the outside of the cup and of the dish.

  7. But inside you are full of greed and wickedness.

  8. You fools! Did not he who made the outside make the inside also?

  9. But give as alms those things that are within, and behold, everything is clean for you.

  10. But woe to you, Pharisees!

  11. For you tithe, mend, and rue, and every herb, and neglect justice and the love of God.

  12. These you ought to have done without neglecting the others.

  13. Woe to you, Pharisees!

  14. For you love the best seed in the synagogues and greetings in the marketplaces.

  15. Woe to you!

  16. For you are like unmarked graves, and people walk over them without knowing it.

  17. One of the lawyers answered him,

  18. Teacher, in saying these things, you insult us also.

  19. And he said,

  20. Woe to you, lawyers, also.

  21. For you loathe people with burdens hard to bear,

  22. and you yourselves do not touch the burdens with one of your fingers.

  23. Woe to you!

  24. For you build the tombs of the prophets whom your fathers killed.

  25. So you are witnesses, and you consent to the deeds of your fathers.

  26. For they kill them, and you build their tombs.

  27. Therefore also, the wisdom of God said,

  28. I will send them prophets and apostles, some of whom they will kill and persecute.

  29. So that the blood of all the prophets, shed from the foundation of the world,

  30. may be charged against this generation.

  31. From the blood of Abel, to the blood of Zechariah,

  32. who perished between the altar and the sanctuary.

  33. Yes, I tell you, it will be required of this generation.

  34. Woe to you, lawyers, for you have taken away the key of knowledge.

  35. You did not enter yourselves, and you hindered those who were entering.

  36. As he went away from there, the scribes and the Pharisees began to press him hard

  37. and to provoke him to speak about many things,

  38. lying in wait for him to catch him in something he might say.

  39. This is God's infallible and authoritative word.

  40. I don't know if you have ever sat through a sermon,

  41. wondering to yourself,

  42. Is this pastor talking about me and my situation?

  43. And most of the time, when I preach, I don't have a single person,

  44. like one person in mind.

  45. Usually it's several people or categories of people,

  46. since no temptation has overtaken you,

  47. except that which is common to men.

  48. For that reason, if you're dealing with something,

  49. it's no likelihood there are other people in the church dealing with it as well.

  50. But I do think specifically about our church when I prepare sermons,

  51. because my sermons are not preached for the world,

  52. but for you,

  53. for this local church.

  54. And that's why pastors do not,

  55. or at least should not,

  56. copy and paste sermons written by other pastors,

  57. even the best preachers in the world,

  58. and then preach it to their local churches.

  59. In the passage immediately preceding our passage for today,

  60. Jesus preached on the importance of believing and living in accordance with his message

  61. that the kingdom of God has dawned with his arrival as the Messiah and Savior of the world.

  62. And he spoke unflinchingly that this generation is an evil generation.

  63. It seeks for a sign,

  64. but no sign will be given to it except the sign of Jonah.

  65. And the sign of Jonah was in reference to his preaching,

  66. that his preaching to them to repent and to believe in him

  67. is the sign that God's giving to them.

  68. And as Jesus was saying these things,

  69. I'm sure some people were squirming in their seats thinking,

  70. oh man, Jesus is speaking directly to me.

  71. But then there were others

  72. who felt certain

  73. that Jesus

  74. was not speaking to them.

  75. They were the Pharisees,

  76. the scribes.

  77. The Pharisees were one of the four major religious groups,

  78. Jewish religious groups in the first century.

  79. They were the Jews who sought to purify

  80. and reform the Jewish community.

  81. And the scribes,

  82. who are called the lawyers in this passage,

  83. they were the religious academics

  84. who lended legal

  85. and scholarly support

  86. to the Pharisees' ministry,

  87. their interpretation of the Old Testament.

  88. So you could think of the Pharisees

  89. as kind of

  90. the ministers

  91. or the pastors.

  92. And then you could think of the lawyers,

  93. the scribes as the theologians,

  94. the seminary professors

  95. of the Jewish people.

  96. And as the Jewish leaders,

  97. the religious leaders

  98. and teachers of their day,

  99. and the context of this passage

  100. and what we've seen among the Pharisees

  101. and the scribes,

  102. they suggest that they would have been

  103. heartily saying their amens

  104. to what Jesus was saying

  105. about this evil generation.

  106. Because they were,

  107. they knew the generation was,

  108. they wanted to reform it.

  109. That was their entire agenda.

  110. Yes, Jesus, preach!

  111. Tell them!

  112. They don't listen to us!

  113. Maybe they'll listen to you!

  114. But Jesus is not about

  115. to let them off the hook.

  116. He lays into these

  117. religious leaders

  118. in Luke 11, 37 to 54.

  119. He speaks specifically

  120. of the hypocrisy of the Pharisees

  121. in verses 37 to 44.

  122. And he speaks of the hindrance

  123. he describes

  124. in verses 45 to 54.

  125. And the main point is

  126. that following Jesus

  127. involves not merely

  128. external conformity,

  129. but also internal conversion

  130. through the blood of Christ.

  131. So let's first look at

  132. the hypocrisy of the Pharisees.

  133. While Jesus was speaking,

  134. it says in verse 37,

  135. that a Pharisee

  136. asked him to dine with him,

  137. so he went in

  138. and reclined at table.

  139. This is the second

  140. of three occasions

  141. in the Gospel of Luke

  142. when Jesus accepts

  143. the invitation

  144. to a Pharisee's home.

  145. And throughout his ministry,

  146. Jesus has been drawing

  147. the ire of the Pharisees

  148. because Pharisees

  149. refused to associate

  150. with sinners,

  151. but Jesus constantly had

  152. as his companion sinners

  153. because he was calling

  154. them to repentance.

  155. And so the Pharisees

  156. didn't exactly get along

  157. with him that well.

  158. And yet,

  159. when a Pharisee

  160. asked him to dine with him,

  161. Jesus accepted the invitation

  162. because he knew

  163. that despite the Pharisee's

  164. self-righteousness,

  165. they were still sinners

  166. in need of the message

  167. of the Gospel

  168. that he brings.

  169. So he went in

  170. and reclined at table.

  171. And the word reclined

  172. suggests that this wasn't

  173. an ordinary family meal,

  174. as we've seen,

  175. where people sit down

  176. on a chair.

  177. But they're reclining,

  178. that means it's reversed

  179. to a special meal.

  180. It's a formal banquet

  181. where the guests

  182. are reclining

  183. on little mats,

  184. on cushions of some kind

  185. on the floor.

  186. And Jesus was likely

  187. the guest of honor

  188. at this special banquet

  189. since he was considered

  190. virtuous among Jews

  191. to invite itinerant

  192. Jewish teachers

  193. to their homes

  194. to have a discussion

  195. and to hear their lessons.

  196. And that's what Jesus

  197. called the teacher here,

  198. verse 45.

  199. And this kind of context

  200. of having theological

  201. and religious

  202. and philosophical instruction

  203. over a meal

  204. was very widely used

  205. in the Roman Empire.

  206. It came to be known later

  207. as a symposium,

  208. which is where we get

  209. the English word.

  210. So this is a common context.

  211. And at this special banquet,

  212. it says in verse 38,

  213. the Pharisee was astonished

  214. to see that Jesus

  215. did not first wash

  216. before dinner.

  217. So he was watching Jesus

  218. to see what he would do.

  219. And he was surprised

  220. that Jesus didn't wash

  221. his hands,

  222. he didn't wash himself

  223. before he ate.

  224. And the concern here

  225. is not with personal hygiene.

  226. The Pharisees couldn't care less.

  227. This is about ceremonial purity.

  228. Washing yourself before meals

  229. is described in the Old Testament,

  230. but really mostly

  231. for hygienic purposes

  232. and customary things to do.

  233. But they are never prescribed

  234. in the Old Testament

  235. as a commandment.

  236. You must wash your hands

  237. in this manner

  238. before you eat.

  239. And yet the Jews

  240. traditionally practiced

  241. ritual cleansing

  242. before meals.

  243. Mark chapter 7,

    Mark 7:1–4

  244. verses 1 to 4

  245. describe this Jewish tradition.

  246. Now when the Pharisees

  247. gathered to him

  248. with some of the scribes

  249. who had come from Jerusalem,

  250. they saw that some

  251. of his disciples

  252. ate with hands

  253. that were defiled,

  254. that is unwashed.

  255. For the Pharisees

  256. and all the Jews

  257. do not eat

  258. unless they wash

  259. their hands properly,

  260. holding to the tradition

  261. of the elders.

  262. And when they come

  263. from the marketplace,

  264. they do not eat

  265. unless they wash.

  266. So this is a reference

  267. to the tradition

  268. of the elders.

  269. This is extra-biblical.

  270. And it's not in Scripture itself.

  271. It's something the Jews

  272. have added to it.

  273. In fact,

  274. if you look at the Mishnah,

  275. which is a collection

  276. of Jewish commentary,

  277. they're teaching

  278. an authoritative tradition

  279. of the Jews,

  280. it says specifically

  281. that when you wash

  282. your hands before meals,

  283. you're supposed to

  284. wash it twice.

  285. You're supposed to

  286. pour water on your hand twice.

  287. And as you do that,

  288. however,

  289. the ritual cleansing

  290. only applies

  291. up to your wrist.

  292. So if you actually

  293. pour the water

  294. above the wrist,

  295. beyond the wrist,

  296. twice,

  297. and the water

  298. that touches

  299. the part that's

  300. not clean

  301. above the wrist,

  302. and the water

  303. flows back down

  304. to your hand,

  305. then you haven't

  306. washed properly.

  307. You're still unclean.

  308. So that's the length

  309. to which these Jews

  310. went to ensure

  311. that you're ritually

  312. clean before you

  313. are actually able

  314. to eat something.

  315. And Jesus is not

  316. willing to submit

  317. to these human traditions.

  318. And so he doesn't

  319. do this,

  320. intentionally or

  321. unintentionally,

  322. and the Pharisees

  323. are shocked

  324. that Jesus,

  325. this Jewish teacher,

  326. would flaunt

  327. this tradition.

  328. And he's judging him.

  329. He's surprised

  330. by that.

  331. And even though

  332. the Pharisee himself

  333. doesn't actually

  334. say anything

  335. to Jesus here,

  336. Jesus nonetheless

  337. perceives

  338. the Pharisee's

  339. astonishment

  340. and challenges

  341. his understanding

  342. of ritual purity.

  343. And so he says

  344. in verse 39,

  345. And the Lord

  346. said to him,

  347. this is Luke,

  348. the author of the gospel,

  349. calling Jesus Lord,

  350. which is a loaded word,

  351. right?

  352. Because God is called Lord

  353. in Luke chapter 1,

    Luke 1:43

  354. verse 43.

  355. And in Luke chapter 2,

    Luke 2 chapter mention

  356. 11,

  357. Jesus is described

  358. as a Savior

  359. who is Christ the Lord.

  360. So by intentionally

  361. using the word Lord here,

  362. Luke is highlighting

  363. the contrast,

  364. how out of line

  365. it is for this Pharisee

  366. to look down

  367. on Jesus

  368. for foregoing

  369. a ritual cleansing

  370. taught by the traditions

  371. of men.

  372. He is Jesus,

  373. the Lord,

  374. the Holy One of God.

  375. And this is

  376. the verdict of the Lord.

  377. He says in verses

  378. 39 to 40,

  379. Now you Pharisees

  380. cleanse the outside

  381. of the cup

  382. and of the dish,

  383. but inside you are

  384. full of greed

  385. and wickedness.

  386. You fools,

  387. did not he who made

  388. the outside

  389. make the inside also.

  390. The issue at hand

  391. was of course

  392. the washing of the body,

  393. the hand,

  394. before the meal.

  395. But Jesus uses

  396. the Pharisees'

  397. practice of ritual cleansing,

  398. the practice of

  399. ritually washing

  400. the cups and dishes

  401. as well

  402. that the Pharisees

  403. practiced

  404. to make a larger point.

  405. This is his illustration

  406. to make a larger point

  407. about ritual cleansing

  408. in general.

  409. Because the Pharisees

  410. were meticulous

  411. about making sure

  412. that every cup

  413. and dish that they used

  414. were ritually clean.

  415. But their concern

  416. with ritual purity

  417. was hypocritical

  418. because inside

  419. they were full of greed

  420. and wickedness.

  421. Greed is the word

  422. that refers to

  423. robbing somebody,

  424. plundering someone

  425. in other contexts.

  426. And the word wickedness

  427. is a general term

  428. for what is evil.

  429. Which is,

  430. the word evil

  431. is a key word

  432. throughout Luke chapter 11.

    Luke 11 chapter mention

  433. The word evil

  434. has been used five times

  435. in this chapter alone.

  436. And in verse 29

  437. Jesus said specifically

  438. that this generation

  439. is an evil generation.

  440. So by saying

  441. that the Pharisees

  442. are full of evil,

  443. the wickedness,

  444. which is non-form

  445. of the attitude evil

  446. in Greek.

  447. Jesus is saying

  448. explicitly

  449. that the Pharisees

  450. are not exempt.

  451. You thought that

  452. you were exempt

  453. from this criticism

  454. of this evil generation.

  455. You are full

  456. of the same evil.

  457. They too are part

  458. of this evil generation.

  459. They too need to repent

  460. of their sins

  461. and follow Jesus.

  462. When it comes

  463. to outward observances

  464. that people can see,

  465. the Pharisees

  466. were strict

  467. and detail-oriented.

  468. But when it came

  469. to the inward

  470. posture of obedience,

  471. what people cannot see,

  472. they were thoroughly wicked.

  473. And the illustration

  474. is powerful.

  475. What good is it

  476. to wash the outside

  477. of dishes, right?

  478. If on the inside

  479. there's still food stains.

  480. What good is it

  481. to wash the outside

  482. of your cups

  483. and water bottles

  484. when on the inside

  485. has green

  486. and white things

  487. growing?

  488. Would you drink

  489. from that?

  490. Jesus is charging

  491. the Pharisees

  492. of hypocrisy,

  493. which means to act,

  494. to pretend.

  495. The Pharisees

  496. are pretenders

  497. because if they

  498. were really concerned

  499. with holiness,

  500. they would have first

  501. dealt with their

  502. inward greed

  503. and wickedness.

  504. But instead,

  505. they are concerned

  506. with this outward

  507. minutiae

  508. of the Jewish

  509. religious tradition,

  510. which are not even

  511. in Scripture,

  512. but are instead

  513. accumulation

  514. of human tradition.

  515. And this is

  516. offensive to God.

  517. This is an affront

  518. to God

  519. because Jesus

  520. says in verse 40,

  521. Did not he

  522. who made the outside

  523. make the inside

  524. also?

  525. God not only

  526. made the outside

  527. of a person,

  528. but also the inside

  529. of a person.

  530. So both our outside

  531. and inside

  532. belong to God.

  533. Not merely

  534. what we say

  535. out in the open,

  536. but also

  537. our hidden thoughts.

  538. They belong

  539. to God.

  540. God is not merely

  541. concerned with

  542. what we do

  543. in public,

  544. but with everything

  545. we do,

  546. even in the privacy

  547. of our homes.

  548. How do we live

  549. when no one

  550. is looking?

  551. Because God

  552. is still watching.

  553. In what ways,

  554. this is a good time

  555. to ask ourselves,

  556. have we compartmentalized

  557. our lives?

  558. Perhaps on the outside,

  559. we are ever

  560. the polite person

  561. smiling at everyone,

  562. saying all the courteous

  563. and nice things,

  564. but in our hidden

  565. thoughts,

  566. we are full of

  567. prideful judgment

  568. and hatred.

  569. Behind closed doors,

  570. we are full of

  571. gossip and slander.

  572. Perhaps we speak

  573. gently and kindly

  574. to everybody

  575. on Sunday morning,

  576. but in the privacy

  577. of our homes,

  578. in the context

  579. of our workplace,

  580. we speak harshly

  581. and haughtily

  582. to our spouses,

  583. to our coworkers,

  584. to our roommates.

  585. Perhaps on the outside,

  586. perhaps on the outside,

  587. we are proficient

  588. at using

  589. the Christian lingo,

  590. saying all the amens

  591. in the right places,

  592. saying praise God

  593. at timely moments,

  594. and always asking people

  595. about their prayer requests,

  596. but we barely

  597. spend

  598. any time

  599. praying for the request

  600. we so diligently

  601. canvassed.

  602. Perhaps there is

  603. a jarring

  604. incongruity

  605. between

  606. the way you

  607. present yourself

  608. in the virtual world

  609. of Facebook

  610. and Instagram

  611. and the way you

  612. actually live

  613. in the real world.

  614. God made

  615. both

  616. the inside

  617. and the outside,

  618. and He's not

  619. looking for

  620. halfway Christians

  621. or surface Christians.

  622. He's looking for

  623. those who will

  624. follow Him

  625. with all their heart,

  626. soul,

  627. mind,

  628. and strength.

  629. Those who will

  630. give their whole lives

  631. to Him

  632. and live from

  633. the inside out

  634. in obedience to Him.

  635. That's what God

  636. is calling us to.

  637. So Jesus continues

  638. that point in verse 41,

  639. but give as alms

  640. those things

  641. that are within,

  642. and behold,

  643. everything is

  644. clean for you.

  645. In the context

  646. of a special banquet

  647. like this,

  648. it was customary

  649. to leave the door open.

  650. It's a public meal

  651. so that uninvited guests

  652. could enter in

  653. and be flies on the wall

  654. and listen to this

  655. religious or philosophical

  656. dialogue.

  657. And at the end

  658. of the feast,

  659. poor were also

  660. welcomed in

  661. so that they can

  662. beg for the leftovers

  663. and walk away

  664. with some alms

  665. given to them

  666. by charitable people.

  667. And in light

  668. of this context,

  669. what Jesus says

  670. about giving alms

  671. is it stinks.

  672. Because the Pharisees

  673. could host lavish

  674. banquets like this

  675. and give alms

  676. to the poor,

  677. but their hearts

  678. were not in it.

  679. They despised

  680. the lowly,

  681. sinful people.

  682. But instead

  683. of a mere

  684. outward generosity,

  685. they should,

  686. as Jesus is saying,

  687. cultivate an inward

  688. love and compassion

  689. toward them.

  690. Give as alms

  691. those things

  692. that are within,

  693. and behold,

  694. everything is clean

  695. for you.

  696. If you are sanctified

  697. inwardly,

  698. then everything you do

  699. will be acceptable

  700. to God.

  701. Because as Jesus said

  702. earlier in Luke

    Luke 6:45

  703. chapter 6,

  704. verse 45,

  705. the good person

  706. out of the good

  707. treasure of his heart

  708. produces good,

  709. and the evil person

  710. out of his evil

  711. treasure produces evil.

  712. For out of the abundance

  713. of the heart

  714. his mouth speaks.

  715. because heart

  716. is the wellspring

  717. of life,

  718. because the heart

  719. that governs

  720. our inward disposition

  721. posture,

  722. governs what we do

  723. outwardly.

  724. If we are sanctified

  725. inwardly,

  726. if we give of God

  727. inwardly,

  728. it will come out

  729. on the outside.

  730. After giving the

  731. summary judgment

  732. of the Pharisees

  733. as those who are,

  734. who cleanse the outside

  735. but not the inside,

  736. in verses 42 to 44,

  737. Jesus pronounces

  738. three woes

  739. on the Pharisees

  740. that further explain

  741. their hypocrisy.

  742. The woe is the

  743. opposite of a blessing.

  744. It's announcing pity

  745. for someone's misfortune.

  746. Woe to you,

  747. Pharisees.

  748. And the first woe

  749. is in verse 42.

  750. Woe to you,

  751. Pharisees,

  752. for you tithe

  753. mint and rue

  754. and every herb

  755. and neglect justice

  756. and the love of God.

  757. These you ought to have

  758. done without neglecting

  759. the others.

  760. Following the Old Testament

  761. law,

  762. the Pharisees gave

  763. a tenth of all

  764. their material possessions

  765. to God

  766. to be used

  767. for God's worship

  768. and for the ministry

  769. of God's people.

  770. That's what we call

  771. a tithe.

  772. But the Pharisees,

  773. as they did

  774. to everything else,

  775. they took this

  776. to the extreme

  777. and they cut

  778. an exact tenth

  779. of even the smallest

  780. herbs like mint

  781. and rue

  782. in order to tithe them.

  783. Can you imagine

  784. them on a table?

  785. It's a little mint

  786. cut over a tenth of it

  787. to make sure

  788. they can bring it

  789. to the temple.

  790. They calculated

  791. their tithe

  792. to the smallest,

  793. the decimal point,

  794. the very last penny.

  795. But even though

  796. they obeyed

  797. the commandment

  798. to tithe,

  799. even to the minutest

  800. detail,

  801. they neglected

  802. justice

  803. and the love of God.

  804. The word justice

  805. refers to doing

  806. what is right

  807. to our neighbors,

  808. giving them

  809. what is their just due,

  810. and loving God

  811. refers to our orientation

  812. toward God.

  813. Really together,

  814. those two words

  815. are shorthand

  816. for the greatest

  817. commandment

  818. that Jesus taught

  819. earlier in Luke

    Luke 10 chapter mention

  820. chapter 10,

  821. 27.

  822. You shall love

  823. the Lord your God

  824. with all your heart,

  825. with all your soul,

  826. and with all your strength,

  827. and with all your mind,

  828. and your neighbor

  829. as yourself.

  830. Love to God

  831. and justice

  832. to our neighbors.

  833. The Pharisees

  834. go to great lengths

  835. to obey

  836. the least

  837. of the commands

  838. of God,

  839. yet they neglect

  840. the greatest

  841. of God's commands.

  842. Jesus doesn't say,

  843. notice that,

  844. he doesn't say

  845. that the Pharisees

  846. are wrong to tithe.

  847. He doesn't condemn

  848. them for the practice.

  849. He says,

  850. these you ought

  851. to have done

  852. without neglecting

  853. the others.

  854. Their obedience

  855. to God

  856. was disproportioned.

  857. It was

  858. misprioritized.

  859. They obeyed

  860. the smallest letter

  861. of the law,

  862. but not the heart

  863. and the spirit

  864. of the law.

  865. Are we overly

  866. concerned

  867. with

  868. one or two

  869. minor areas

  870. of obedience

  871. to the expense

  872. of more important

  873. areas of obedience?

  874. Perhaps we're

  875. extremely concerned

  876. with being on time

  877. at the worship service.

  878. Being on time

  879. for worship service

  880. is a good thing,

  881. but do we,

  882. in the name

  883. of punctuality

  884. and reverence

  885. for God,

  886. impatiently

  887. cut off

  888. other cars

  889. and honk

  890. at other drivers,

  891. and angrily

  892. chew out

  893. our spouses

  894. and our children

  895. for making us

  896. late.

  897. perhaps we're

  898. extremely concerned

  899. with exegetical

  900. and theological

  901. minutiae,

  902. overly eager

  903. to point out

  904. people's sins,

  905. overly eager

  906. to point out

  907. the smallest

  908. of their

  909. theological error.

  910. prayer.

  911. And in the name

  912. of theological

  913. precision

  914. and holiness,

  915. we sinfully

  916. judge

  917. and tear down

  918. our brothers

  919. and sisters

  920. in Christ.

  921. What aspect

  922. of the spiritual

  923. life most

  924. preoccupies you?

  925. Are you

  926. obsessed with

  927. tithing,

  928. mint,

  929. rue,

  930. and every herb,

  931. or are you

  932. focused on

  933. the justice

  934. and on

  935. the love

  936. of God?

  937. Jesus

  938. pronounces the

  939. second woe

  940. in verse 43,

  941. Woe to you

  942. Pharisees,

  943. for you love

  944. the best seed

  945. in the synagogues

  946. and greetings

  947. in the marketplaces.

  948. The Pharisees

  949. were always

  950. competing with

  951. each other

  952. for the most

  953. respected

  954. positions

  955. as they gathered

  956. in worship

  957. at the synagogues.

  958. You can see

  959. this from

  960. even the Puritan

  961. practice.

  962. If you visit,

  963. have you guys

  964. ever been

  965. to the old

  966. North Church?

  967. It's a spot

  968. on the Freedom

  969. Trail.

  970. One of the

  971. oldest churches

  972. in the country.

  973. It's located

  974. in the North

  975. End,

  976. and if you

  977. go,

  978. you can still

  979. see the old

  980. box pews.

  981. And these

  982. box pews,

  983. they all have

  984. keys in them,

  985. interestingly.

  986. Can you imagine

  987. all these seeds

  988. having keys

  989. and you're

  990. owing a key

  991. to it?

  992. You had to

  993. pay for it.

  994. You had to

  995. pay for these

  996. box pews,

  997. and only the

  998. people who

  999. had the keys

  1000. could sit

  1001. on them.

  1002. And of course,

  1003. only the

  1004. wealthiest people

  1005. could afford

  1006. such pews,

  1007. especially the

  1008. ones that

  1009. were near

  1010. the front,

  1011. which were

  1012. the most

  1013. prominent

  1014. positions,

  1015. and whenever

  1016. one suddenly

  1017. became open,

  1018. there would

  1019. be a bidding

  1020. war.

  1021. And sometimes

  1022. they would

  1023. get in fist

  1024. fights for

  1025. these prominent

  1026. seats,

  1027. which is an

  1028. embarrassing

  1029. thing to

  1030. share,

  1031. I know,

  1032. because these

  1033. are,

  1034. they did

  1035. this in

  1036. the churches.

  1037. But that's

  1038. kind of exactly

  1039. what Jesus

  1040. is talking

  1041. about.

  1042. A similar

  1043. thing was

  1044. happening among

  1045. the Jewish

  1046. leaders in

  1047. the synagogue.

  1048. They sought

  1049. the best seat

  1050. in the

  1051. synagogues

  1052. because it

  1053. was a

  1054. status

  1055. symbol.

  1056. Yes,

  1057. I get to

  1058. sit here

  1059. in the

  1060. front.

  1061. We have

  1062. the total

  1063. opposite

  1064. problem.

  1065. Nobody wants

  1066. to sit in

  1067. the front

  1068. for some

  1069. reason.

  1070. You guys

  1071. just sit

  1072. in the

  1073. front.

  1074. But they

  1075. wanted to

  1076. be highly

  1077. regarded.

  1078. They wanted

  1079. to be seen

  1080. as important.

  1081. And they

  1082. wanted to,

  1083. they loved

  1084. greetings in

  1085. the market

  1086. places.

  1087. Jesus is not

  1088. simply saying

  1089. that these

  1090. Pharisees,

  1091. you know,

  1092. loved people

  1093. and wanted

  1094. people to

  1095. say hi

  1096. to them.

  1097. This is a

  1098. reference to

  1099. these formal

  1100. elaborate

  1101. greetings that

  1102. the Jews

  1103. were expected

  1104. to lavish on

  1105. respected

  1106. persons,

  1107. highly regarded

  1108. persons.

  1109. Pharisees wanted

  1110. people to see

  1111. them in their

  1112. flowing roads.

  1113. And when they

  1114. were caught

  1115. them, they

  1116. would come

  1117. to be like,

  1118. oh, most

  1119. revered

  1120. Pharisee or

  1121. rabbi,

  1122. the peerless

  1123. scholar of the

  1124. law, the

  1125. doctor of

  1126. theology,

  1127. the

  1128. compassionate

  1129. champion

  1130. of piety.

  1131. You kind

  1132. philanthropist,

  1133. what an

  1134. honor it

  1135. is for me

  1136. to be

  1137. greeted by

  1138. your presence.

  1139. The Pharisees

  1140. were engaged

  1141. in a popularity

  1142. contest, but

  1143. Jesus rebukes

  1144. them for this.

  1145. Do we

  1146. seek the

  1147. approval of

  1148. man rather

  1149. than the

  1150. approval of

  1151. God?

  1152. God.

  1153. do we

  1154. want to be

  1155. seen by

  1156. others as

  1157. important, as

  1158. successful, as

  1159. godly, as

  1160. mature?

  1161. Are we

  1162. eager to show

  1163. off how many

  1164. Bible references

  1165. we know?

  1166. Do we

  1167. subtly let

  1168. on to

  1169. so that people

  1170. can see just

  1171. how many

  1172. hours we

  1173. spend praying

  1174. each day?

  1175. Do we

  1176. like to

  1177. pray long,

  1178. flowery prayers,

  1179. eloquent prayers

  1180. to impress

  1181. those around

  1182. us rather

  1183. than focusing

  1184. on speaking

  1185. to God?

  1186. Are we

  1187. eager to

  1188. show people

  1189. just how

  1190. much we

  1191. give to

  1192. the church?

  1193. Or how

  1194. much we

  1195. sacrifice and

  1196. serve?

  1197. Do we

  1198. despise

  1199. humble service

  1200. in the

  1201. background and

  1202. seek only

  1203. the prominent

  1204. positions on

  1205. the stage?

  1206. and then

  1207. if we do

  1208. this, we

  1209. do not get

  1210. the recognition

  1211. and praise

  1212. that we

  1213. crave, we

  1214. throw temper

  1215. tantrums.

  1216. Nobody

  1217. notices me

  1218. when I'm

  1219. serving.

  1220. Nobody

  1221. sees how

  1222. mature I

  1223. am.

  1224. Why is

  1225. that woman

  1226. serving in

  1227. that role?

  1228. I'm just

  1229. as gifted

  1230. as she

  1231. is.

  1232. Why is

  1233. that man

  1234. in the

  1235. place of

  1236. leadership?

  1237. Surely I

  1238. am just

  1239. as qualified

  1240. as he

  1241. is.

  1242. If we

  1243. serve to

  1244. get credit

  1245. for ourselves,

  1246. God does

  1247. not get

  1248. the credit.

  1249. If we

  1250. serve in

  1251. our own

  1252. strength

  1253. without

  1254. acknowledging

  1255. the gifts

  1256. of God,

  1257. that all

  1258. that we

  1259. have comes

  1260. from God,

  1261. and that

  1262. all that

  1263. we do

  1264. is the

  1265. outworking

  1266. of the

  1267. grace of

  1268. God

  1269. within

  1270. us,

  1271. then we

  1272. are robbing

  1273. God of

  1274. his glory.

  1275. And that

  1276. too is

  1277. hypocrisy.

  1278. Acting

  1279. like we

  1280. want to

  1281. glorify

  1282. God

  1283. when we're

  1284. really

  1285. concerned

  1286. with

  1287. glorifying

  1288. ourselves.

  1289. And the

  1290. final woe

  1291. against the

  1292. Pharisees

  1293. is pronounced

  1294. in verse

  1295. 44.

  1296. Woe to

  1297. you,

  1298. for you

  1299. are like

  1300. unmarked

  1301. graves,

  1302. and people

  1303. walk over

  1304. them without

  1305. knowing it.

  1306. Numbers 19

  1307. 11 taught

  1308. that coming

  1309. into physical

  1310. contact with

  1311. the dead

  1312. brought ceremonial

  1313. uncleanness.

  1314. And so to

  1315. avoid,

  1316. so the Jews

  1317. avoided graves.

  1318. And unless

  1319. they were

  1320. burying their

  1321. family members,

  1322. they didn't

  1323. go near

  1324. the graves.

  1325. And unmarked

  1326. graves were

  1327. particularly dangerous

  1328. for ceremonial

  1329. defilement

  1330. because you

  1331. can't see

  1332. them.

  1333. You can't

  1334. spot them.

  1335. They're not

  1336. marked.

  1337. It's like

  1338. going to a

  1339. cemetery and

  1340. it's all

  1341. grass and

  1342. there's

  1343. dead

  1344. people all

  1345. under

  1346. you,

  1347. but you

  1348. don't

  1349. know where

  1350. they are.

  1351. The Pharisees,

  1352. ironically,

  1353. they were the

  1354. highly respected

  1355. religious leaders

  1356. of their

  1357. communities.

  1358. The people

  1359. followed their

  1360. teaching and

  1361. example,

  1362. and yet they

  1363. were like

  1364. unmarked

  1365. graves.

  1366. And people

  1367. unknowingly

  1368. were rendered

  1369. unclean

  1370. by following

  1371. them,

  1372. coming into

  1373. contact with

  1374. them,

  1375. because the

  1376. Pharisees

  1377. were spiritually

  1378. dead inside,

  1379. even the

  1380. outwardly they

  1381. had the

  1382. appearance of

  1383. life.

  1384. So Christian

  1385. brothers and

  1386. sisters,

  1387. we all might

  1388. have the

  1389. outward appearance

  1390. of life,

  1391. but are we

  1392. alive on the

  1393. inside?

  1394. God,

  1395. this is an

  1396. especially

  1397. important question

  1398. for you to

  1399. answer if you

  1400. have taken it

  1401. upon yourself

  1402. to teach,

  1403. lead,

  1404. or disciple

  1405. other believers.

  1406. If we don't

  1407. have the life

  1408. of God within

  1409. us,

  1410. if we are

  1411. hypocrites,

  1412. who are clean

  1413. on the outside,

  1414. but dirty on

  1415. the inside,

  1416. if we fixate on

  1417. minutiae,

  1418. while ignoring the

  1419. most important

  1420. things,

  1421. if we seek

  1422. our glory

  1423. rather than

  1424. the glory of

  1425. God,

  1426. then our

  1427. example and

  1428. our teaching

  1429. will not merely

  1430. be in vain,

  1431. they will be

  1432. spiritually deadly

  1433. for those around

  1434. us.

  1435. So I want to

  1436. exhort you this

  1437. morning as the

  1438. 19th century

  1439. pastor J.C.

  1440. Ryle once

  1441. exhorted his

  1442. own congregation,

  1443. let us leave

  1444. the whole passage

  1445. with a settled

  1446. determination to

  1447. watch and pray

  1448. against hypocrisy

  1449. and religion.

  1450. Whatever we are

  1451. as Christians,

  1452. let us be

  1453. real,

  1454. thorough,

  1455. genuine,

  1456. and sincere.

  1457. Let us

  1458. abhor all

  1459. affectation

  1460. and part

  1461. acting in

  1462. the things

  1463. of God as

  1464. that which

  1465. is utterly

  1466. loathsome in

  1467. Christ's eyes.

  1468. We may be

  1469. weak and

  1470. erring and

  1471. frail and

  1472. come far

  1473. short of our

  1474. aims and

  1475. desires,

  1476. but at any

  1477. rate,

  1478. if we

  1479. profess to

  1480. believe in

  1481. Christ,

  1482. let us

  1483. be true.

  1484. Let us

  1485. rather be

  1486. weak,

  1487. failing,

  1488. Christians who

  1489. fall short,

  1490. yet be

  1491. true,

  1492. then be

  1493. fake.

  1494. Following

  1495. Jesus

  1496. involves not

  1497. merely external

  1498. conformity,

  1499. but also

  1500. internal

  1501. conversion

  1502. through the

  1503. blood of

  1504. Christ.

  1505. And as

  1506. Jesus denounces

  1507. the hypocrisy

  1508. of the Pharisees,

  1509. an expert of

  1510. the Jewish

  1511. law,

  1512. a scribe

  1513. dares to

  1514. step into

  1515. Jesus'

  1516. line of

  1517. fire.

  1518. Teacher,

  1519. in saying

  1520. these things,

  1521. you insult

  1522. us also.

  1523. To

  1524. translate that,

  1525. he's saying,

  1526. Jesus,

  1527. I think you're

  1528. a little out

  1529. of line

  1530. here.

  1531. Surely you

  1532. don't intend

  1533. to insult

  1534. upstanding

  1535. moral citizens

  1536. like us,

  1537. but you're

  1538. getting a little

  1539. bit carried

  1540. away because

  1541. these Pharisees

  1542. are one

  1543. of us,

  1544. so please

  1545. stop.

  1546. These

  1547. lawyers and

  1548. theologians,

  1549. they were

  1550. allied.

  1551. These lawyers

  1552. aided the

  1553. Pharisees in

  1554. their ministry,

  1555. so they were

  1556. squirming in

  1557. their seats as

  1558. the Pharisees

  1559. were being

  1560. denounced in

  1561. this way,

  1562. but Jesus

  1563. doesn't stop.

  1564. He addresses

  1565. the lawyers

  1566. directly as

  1567. well.

  1568. He says

  1569. in verse

  1570. 46,

  1571. Woe to

  1572. you lawyers

  1573. also,

  1574. for you

  1575. loathe people

  1576. with burdens

  1577. hard to

  1578. bear,

  1579. and you

  1580. yourselves

  1581. do not

  1582. touch the

  1583. burdens

  1584. with one

  1585. of your

  1586. fingers.

  1587. Much like

  1588. the Pharisees

  1589. insistence

  1590. on a very

  1591. particular

  1592. ritual

  1593. cleansing

  1594. prior to

  1595. meals,

  1596. the lawyers

  1597. had developed

  1598. hundreds of

  1599. rules that

  1600. went beyond

  1601. the warrant,

  1602. the boundaries

  1603. of Scripture.

  1604. By doing

  1605. this,

  1606. they loaded

  1607. people with

  1608. burdens hard

  1609. to bear,

  1610. with burdens

  1611. that God

  1612. did not intend

  1613. for them

  1614. to bear.

  1615. And one of

  1616. the clearest

  1617. examples of

  1618. this was

  1619. their observance,

  1620. their legalistic

  1621. observance of

  1622. the Sabbath,

  1623. because Exodus

  1624. 20 does

  1625. command us,

  1626. remember the

  1627. Sabbath day

  1628. by keeping

  1629. holy,

  1630. right?

  1631. Six days

  1632. you shall

  1633. labor and

  1634. do all

  1635. your work,

  1636. but the

  1637. seventh day

  1638. you shall

  1639. not do

  1640. any work.

  1641. That was

  1642. the simple

  1643. command.

  1644. Six days

  1645. work,

  1646. seventh day

  1647. do not

  1648. work.

  1649. Remember

  1650. your Sabbath.

  1651. But the

  1652. lawyers,

  1653. these Jewish

  1654. lawyers,

  1655. they took

  1656. that simple

  1657. command and

  1658. attached dozens

  1659. of prickly

  1660. rules to

  1661. it.

  1662. So one

  1663. such example

  1664. of this is

  1665. this,

  1666. it says,

  1667. a man may

  1668. carry an

  1669. object in

  1670. his right

  1671. hand or

  1672. in his

  1673. left hand,

  1674. in his

  1675. bosom or

  1676. in his

  1677. shoulder,

  1678. and if they

  1679. did that,

  1680. they would be

  1681. guilty of

  1682. breaking the

  1683. Sabbath,

  1684. if they use

  1685. any of those

  1686. body parts to

  1687. carry an

  1688. object on

  1689. a Sabbath.

  1690. However,

  1691. if he carried

  1692. an object on

  1693. the back of

  1694. his hand,

  1695. or with

  1696. his foot,

  1697. or with

  1698. his mouth,

  1699. or with

  1700. his elbow,

  1701. or with

  1702. his ear,

  1703. or in

  1704. his hair,

  1705. or in

  1706. his wallet,

  1707. as long as

  1708. the wallet is

  1709. carried mouth

  1710. downwards,

  1711. or between

  1712. his wallet and

  1713. his shirt,

  1714. or in the

  1715. hem of his

  1716. shirt,

  1717. or in his

  1718. shoe,

  1719. or in his

  1720. sandal,

  1721. then he

  1722. would not

  1723. be guilty

  1724. of breaking

  1725. the Sabbath.

  1726. Isn't that

  1727. crazy?

  1728. It's

  1729. ridiculous.

  1730. I was

  1731. reading that.

  1732. That's from

  1733. the Mishnah.

  1734. Unlike

  1735. Jesus who

  1736. said in

  1737. Matthew 11,

  1738. come to

  1739. me all

  1740. who labor

  1741. and are

  1742. heavy laden

  1743. and I

  1744. will give

  1745. you rest.

  1746. Take my

  1747. yoke upon

  1748. you and

  1749. learn from

  1750. me for

  1751. I am

  1752. gentle and

  1753. lowly in

  1754. heart and

  1755. you will

  1756. find rest

  1757. for your

  1758. souls for

  1759. my yoke

  1760. is easy

  1761. and my

  1762. burden

  1763. is light.

  1764. These

  1765. Jewish

  1766. lawyers

  1767. loaded

  1768. people with

  1769. burdens

  1770. hard to

  1771. bear.

  1772. They

  1773. added to

  1774. God's

  1775. perfect

  1776. law these

  1777. imperfect

  1778. human

  1779. traditions.

  1780. They

  1781. complicated

  1782. God's

  1783. law with

  1784. complex

  1785. legal

  1786. details

  1787. that were

  1788. difficult

  1789. for people

  1790. to follow

  1791. let alone

  1792. understand.

  1793. Sometimes

  1794. we too

  1795. can be

  1796. tempted

  1797. to take

  1798. matters

  1799. that are

  1800. spiritually

  1801. indifferent

  1802. and then

  1803. elevate them

  1804. to level

  1805. of God's

  1806. law.

  1807. 1 Timothy

    1 Timothy 5:2

  1808. 5 verse

  1809. 2

  1810. it does

  1811. teach us

  1812. that men

  1813. are to

  1814. treat

  1815. older

  1816. women

  1817. in the

  1818. church

  1819. as

  1820. mothers

  1821. younger

  1822. women

  1823. as

  1824. sisters

  1825. in

  1826. all

  1827. purity.

  1828. So if

  1829. you're

  1830. a man

  1831. and you

  1832. start to

  1833. get romantically

  1834. involved

  1835. with a

  1836. young

  1837. woman in

  1838. the church

  1839. you should

  1840. treat her

  1841. like a

  1842. sister

  1843. in all

  1844. purity

  1845. until

  1846. you're

  1847. married.

  1848. I do

  1849. believe

  1850. that has

  1851. far

  1852. reaching

  1853. implications

  1854. because

  1855. there are

  1856. a lot

  1857. of men

  1858. who do

  1859. all kinds

  1860. of things

  1861. that they

  1862. would never

  1863. think to

  1864. do with

  1865. their

  1866. sisters.

  1867. But despite

  1868. this principle

  1869. the Bible

  1870. does not

  1871. say

  1872. that the

  1873. two

  1874. can never

  1875. go on a

  1876. date by

  1877. themselves.

  1878. The Bible

  1879. does not

  1880. say

  1881. that they

  1882. can never

  1883. hold hands

  1884. or hug.

  1885. Sometimes

  1886. pastors

  1887. and Christians

  1888. lay those

  1889. extra rules

  1890. down.

  1891. 1 Timothy

    1 Timothy 2:9–10

  1892. chapter 2

  1893. verses

  1894. 9 to

  1895. 10

  1896. teach

  1897. women

  1898. to

  1899. adorn

  1900. themselves

  1901. in

  1902. respectable

  1903. apparel

  1904. with

  1905. modesty

  1906. and

  1907. self-control

  1908. not with

  1909. braided hair

  1910. and gold

  1911. or pearls

  1912. or costly

  1913. attire

  1914. but with

  1915. what is

  1916. proper for

  1917. women who

  1918. profess

  1919. godliness

  1920. with good

  1921. works.

  1922. That is

  1923. commanded

  1924. in Scripture.

  1925. But the

  1926. Bible does

  1927. not say

  1928. that a

  1929. woman

  1930. therefore

  1931. should wear

  1932. only full

  1933. length

  1934. dresses

  1935. as some

  1936. churches

  1937. teach.

  1938. 1 Corinthians

    1 Corinthians 6 chapter mention

  1939. chapter 6

  1940. 19 to

  1941. 20

  1942. does

  1943. teach

  1944. that

  1945. your

  1946. body

  1947. is

  1948. a

  1949. temple

  1950. of

  1951. the

  1952. Holy

  1953. Spirit

  1954. within

  1955. you

  1956. whom

  1957. you

  1958. have

  1959. from

  1960. God

  1961. you

  1962. are

  1963. not

  1964. your

  1965. own

  1966. for

  1967. you

  1968. are

  1969. bought

  1970. with

  1971. a

  1972. price

  1973. so

  1974. glorify

  1975. God

  1976. with

  1977. your

  1978. body

  1979. in

  1980. your

  1981. body

  1982. 1 Corinthians

  1983. 10

  1984. 31

  1985. also

  1986. says

  1987. whether

  1988. you

  1989. eat

  1990. or

  1991. drink

  1992. or

  1993. whatever

  1994. you

  1995. do

  1996. all

  1997. to

  1998. the

  1999. glory

  2000. of

  2001. God

  2002. but

  2003. the

  2004. Bible

  2005. does

  2006. not

  2007. teach

  2008. that

  2009. we

  2010. should

  2011. all

  2012. be

  2013. pescatarians

  2014. and

  2015. vegetarians

  2016. and

  2017. cut out

  2018. all

  2019. inorganic

  2020. and processed

  2021. foods

  2022. from our

  2023. lives

  2024. Psalm

    Psalms 127:3

  2025. 127

  2026. verse

  2027. 3

  2028. does

  2029. teach

  2030. us

  2031. that

  2032. children

  2033. are

  2034. heritage

  2035. from

  2036. the

  2037. Lord

  2038. the

  2039. fruit

  2040. of

  2041. the

  2042. womb

  2043. a

  2044. reward

  2045. but

  2046. the

  2047. Bible

  2048. does

  2049. not

  2050. teach

  2051. that

  2052. therefore

  2053. all

  2054. contraceptives

  2055. are

  2056. evil

  2057. and

  2058. that

  2059. married

  2060. couples

  2061. should

  2062. have

  2063. as

  2064. many

  2065. children

  2066. as

  2067. they

  2068. can

  2069. possibly

  2070. have

  2071. physically

  2072. Ephesians

    Ephesians 6 chapter mention

  2073. chapter 6

  2074. 18

  2075. teaches

  2076. to

  2077. pray

  2078. at

  2079. all

  2080. times

  2081. in

  2082. the

  2083. spirit

  2084. with

  2085. all

  2086. prayer

  2087. and

  2088. supplication

  2089. but

  2090. scripture

  2091. does

  2092. not

  2093. say

  2094. that

  2095. we

  2096. have

  2097. to

  2098. close

  2099. our

  2100. eyes

  2101. and

  2102. pray

  2103. on

  2104. our

  2105. knees

  2106. every

  2107. time

  2108. we

  2109. pray

  2110. or

  2111. that

  2112. we

  2113. have

  2114. to

  2115. use

  2116. the

  2117. rosary

  2118. or

  2119. to

  2120. repeat

  2121. certain

  2122. phrases

  2123. over

  2124. and

  2125. over

  2126. again

  2127. it

  2128. doesn't

  2129. commend

  2130. those

  2131. things

  2132. if

  2133. we

  2134. idealize

  2135. our

  2136. personal

  2137. preferences

  2138. or

  2139. our

  2140. human

  2141. opinions

  2142. to

  2143. the

  2144. level

  2145. of

  2146. God's

  2147. law

  2148. if

  2149. we

  2150. fail

  2151. to

  2152. distinguish

  2153. the

  2154. biblical

  2155. principles

  2156. from

  2157. our

  2158. personal

  2159. practices

  2160. then

  2161. we

  2162. lay

  2163. undue

  2164. burdens

  2165. on

  2166. people

  2167. make

  2168. it

  2169. more

  2170. difficult

  2171. for

  2172. them

  2173. to

  2174. follow

  2175. God

  2176. to

  2177. make

  2178. things

  2179. worse

  2180. not

  2181. only

  2182. did

  2183. these

  2184. lawyers

  2185. lay

  2186. heavy

  2187. burdens

  2188. on

  2189. the

  2190. people

  2191. they

  2192. also

  2193. did

  2194. not

  2195. touch

  2196. the

  2197. burdens

  2198. with

  2199. one

  2200. of

  2201. their

  2202. fingers

  2203. they

  2204. were

  2205. happy

  2206. to

  2207. multiply

  2208. regulations

  2209. but

  2210. when

  2211. it

  2212. came

  2213. to

  2214. actually

  2215. helping

  2216. people

  2217. follow

  2218. these

  2219. regulations

  2220. patiently

  2221. teaching

  2222. them

  2223. explaining

  2224. to

  2225. them

  2226. walking

  2227. alongside

  2228. them

  2229. and

  2230. motivating

  2231. them

  2232. they

  2233. did

  2234. nothing

  2235. after

  2236. loading

  2237. these

  2238. people

  2239. up

  2240. with

  2241. these

  2242. heavy

  2243. burdens

  2244. they

  2245. did

  2246. not

  2247. lift

  2248. the

  2249. finger

  2250. to

  2251. help

  2252. them

  2253. instead

  2254. they

  2255. just

  2256. pointed

  2257. their

  2258. finger

  2259. at

  2260. them

  2261. in

  2262. condemnation

  2263. they

  2264. crushed

  2265. them

  2266. so

  2267. Jesus

  2268. pronounces

  2269. the

  2270. second

  2271. woe

  2272. over

  2273. these

  2274. scribes

  2275. in

  2276. verses 47

  2277. to 48

  2278. woe

  2279. so

  2280. you

  2281. are

  2282. witnesses

  2283. and you

  2284. consent

  2285. to the

  2286. deeds

  2287. of your

  2288. fathers

  2289. for

  2290. they

  2291. kill

  2292. them

  2293. and you

  2294. build

  2295. their

  2296. tombs

  2297. not

  2298. only

  2299. do

  2300. these

  2301. scribes

  2302. lay

  2303. misleading

  2304. and heavy

  2305. burdens

  2306. on

  2307. God's

  2308. people

  2309. when

  2310. God

  2311. sends

  2312. his

  2313. prophets

  2314. to

  2315. redirect

  2316. them

  2317. they

  2318. bury

  2319. these

  2320. prophets

  2321. these

  2322. two

  2323. verses

  2324. 47

  2325. and 48

  2326. are

  2327. structured

  2328. with

  2329. matching

  2330. mirroring

  2331. statements

  2332. it begins

  2333. by saying

  2334. your

  2335. fathers

  2336. built

  2337. the

  2338. tomb

  2339. your

  2340. fathers

  2341. killed

  2342. the

  2343. prophets

  2344. and

  2345. you

  2346. built

  2347. the

  2348. tombs

  2349. of the

  2350. prophets

  2351. whom

  2352. your

  2353. fathers

  2354. killed

  2355. and it

  2356. ends

  2357. with the

  2358. reverse

  2359. of the

  2360. same

  2361. statement

  2362. and the

  2363. intention

  2364. of that

  2365. structure

  2366. is to

  2367. bring

  2368. focus

  2369. to the

  2370. middle

  2371. which

  2372. is

  2373. so

  2374. you

  2375. are

  2376. witnesses

  2377. and you

  2378. consent

  2379. to the

  2380. deeds

  2381. of your

  2382. father

  2383. that's

  2384. what

  2385. Jesus

  2386. is

  2387. talking

  2388. about

  2389. he's

  2390. not

  2391. talking

  2392. about

  2393. literal

  2394. tomb

  2395. building

  2396. that it's

  2397. a problem

  2398. for them

  2399. to build

  2400. tombs

  2401. for these

  2402. prophets

  2403. he's

  2404. saying

  2405. that you

  2406. are

  2407. figuratively

  2408. finishing

  2409. what your

  2410. fathers

  2411. started

  2412. your

  2413. fathers

  2414. killed

  2415. the

  2416. prophets

  2417. of the

  2418. Lord

  2419. and you

  2420. make sure

  2421. they stay

  2422. dead

  2423. and buried

  2424. they kill

  2425. them

  2426. you make

  2427. their

  2428. tombs

  2429. you consent

  2430. to their

  2431. deeds

  2432. by the

  2433. way

  2434. you

  2435. reject

  2436. me

  2437. the

  2438. ultimate

  2439. prophet

  2440. of the

  2441. Lord

  2442. Jesus

  2443. continues

  2444. in

  2445. verses

  2446. 49

  2447. to

  2448. 51

  2449. therefore

  2450. also

  2451. the

  2452. wisdom

  2453. of

  2454. God

  2455. said

  2456. I

  2457. will

  2458. send

  2459. them

  2460. prophets

  2461. and

  2462. apostles

  2463. some

  2464. of whom

  2465. they

  2466. will

  2467. kill

  2468. and

  2469. persecute

  2470. so

  2471. that

  2472. the

  2473. blood

  2474. of

  2475. all

  2476. the

  2477. prophets

  2478. shed

  2479. from

  2480. the

  2481. foundation

  2482. of

  2483. the

  2484. world

  2485. may

  2486. be

  2487. charged

  2488. against

  2489. this

  2490. generation

  2491. from

  2492. the

  2493. blood

  2494. of

  2495. Abel

  2496. to

  2497. the

  2498. blood

  2499. of

  2500. Zechariah

  2501. who

  2502. perished

  2503. between

  2504. the

  2505. altar

  2506. and

  2507. the

  2508. sanctuary

  2509. yes

  2510. I

  2511. tell

  2512. you

  2513. it

  2514. will

  2515. be

  2516. required

  2517. of

  2518. this

  2519. generation

  2520. Jesus

  2521. is

  2522. not

  2523. citing

  2524. from

  2525. a

  2526. book

  2527. of

  2528. scripture

  2529. here

  2530. but

  2531. he's

  2532. alluding

  2533. generally

  2534. to

  2535. God's

  2536. wisdom

  2537. borne out

  2538. by

  2539. Israel's

  2540. history

  2541. so

  2542. even

  2543. though

  2544. God

  2545. knew

  2546. that

  2547. his

  2548. people

  2549. would

  2550. kill

  2551. and

  2552. persecute

  2553. his

  2554. prophets

  2555. and

  2556. apostles

  2557. God

  2558. sent

  2559. them

  2560. anyway

  2561. so

  2562. that

  2563. people

  2564. might

  2565. be

  2566. held

  2567. accountable

  2568. because

  2569. they

  2570. heard

  2571. the

  2572. message

  2573. and

  2574. rejecting

  2575. them

  2576. intentionally

  2577. after

  2578. hearing

  2579. the

  2580. message

  2581. and

  2582. shedding

  2583. the

  2584. blood

  2585. of

  2586. these

  2587. prophets

  2588. they

  2589. will

  2590. be

  2591. held

  2592. accountable

  2593. by

  2594. God

  2595. he

  2596. says

  2597. from

  2598. the

  2599. blood

  2600. of

  2601. Abel

  2602. to

  2603. the

  2604. blood

  2605. of

  2606. Zechariah

  2607. Abel

  2608. as you

  2609. recall

  2610. was

  2611. killed

  2612. by

  2613. Cain

  2614. his

  2615. brother

  2616. because

  2617. Cain

  2618. resented

  2619. the fact

  2620. that

  2621. Abel

  2622. was

  2623. more

  2624. righteous

  2625. than

  2626. he

  2627. was

  2628. and

  2629. that

  2630. he

  2631. offered

  2632. a

  2633. more

  2634. acceptable

  2635. sacrifice

  2636. to

  2637. God

  2638. than

  2639. he

  2640. did

  2641. and

  2642. so

  2643. Cain

  2644. murdered

  2645. his

  2646. brothers

  2647. Abel

  2648. is

  2649. called

  2650. here

  2651. the

  2652. first

  2653. the

  2654. martyr

  2655. and

  2656. Zechariah

  2657. is not

  2658. a reference

  2659. to

  2660. the

  2661. prophet

  2662. Zechariah

  2663. who wrote

  2664. the book

  2665. of

  2666. Zechariah

  2667. but

  2668. it's

  2669. a reference

  2670. to

  2671. the prophet

  2672. Zechariah

  2673. mentioned

  2674. in

  2675. 2nd

  2676. Chronicles

  2677. chapter

  2678. 24

  2679. verses

  2680. 20

  2681. to

  2682. 25

  2683. he

  2684. says

  2685. that

  2686. Zechariah

  2687. denounced

  2688. the

  2689. transgressions

  2690. of the

  2691. people

  2692. of

  2693. Judah

  2694. but

  2695. then

  2696. by

  2697. the

  2698. command

  2699. of

  2700. the

  2701. king

  2702. the

  2703. people

  2704. stoned

  2705. him

  2706. with

  2707. stones

  2708. in

  2709. the

  2710. court

  2711. of

  2712. the

  2713. house

  2714. of

  2715. the

  2716. Lord

  2717. in

  2718. the

  2719. temple

  2720. precinct

  2721. within

  2722. the

  2723. house

  2724. of

  2725. God

  2726. itself

  2727. these

  2728. people

  2729. killed

  2730. the

  2731. prophet

  2732. of

  2733. the

  2734. Lord

  2735. and

  2736. according

  2737. to

  2738. the

  2739. Jewish

  2740. canonical

  2741. order

  2742. the

  2743. book

  2744. order

  2745. of

  2746. the

  2747. Old

  2748. Testament

  2749. Zechariah

  2750. is the

  2751. last

  2752. prophet

  2753. to be

  2754. martyred

  2755. in this

  2756. way

  2757. so

  2758. this

  2759. is

  2760. basically

  2761. from

  2762. the

  2763. first

  2764. to

  2765. the

  2766. last

  2767. you

  2768. will

  2769. be

  2770. held

  2771. accountable

  2772. for

  2773. all

  2774. of

  2775. them

  2776. why

  2777. because

  2778. they

  2779. are

  2780. rejecting

  2781. Christ

  2782. the

  2783. ultimate

  2784. prophet

  2785. and

  2786. in

  2787. doing

  2788. tradition

  2789. of

  2790. their

  2791. fathers

  2792. who

  2793. killed

  2794. the

  2795. prophets

  2796. they're

  2797. continuing

  2798. their

  2799. work

  2800. and

  2801. therefore

  2802. they'll

  2803. be

  2804. held

  2805. accountable

  2806. for

  2807. them

  2808. all

  2809. if

  2810. our

  2811. Christianity

  2812. is

  2813. merely

  2814. about

  2815. external

  2816. conformity

  2817. and not

  2818. internal

  2819. conversion

  2820. through

  2821. the

  2822. blood

  2823. of

  2824. Christ

  2825. then

  2826. we

  2827. too

  2828. are

  2829. doing

  2830. exactly

  2831. what

  2832. the

  2833. scribes

  2834. were

  2835. doing

  2836. the

  2837. last

  2838. woe

  2839. is

  2840. in

  2841. verse

  2842. 52

  2843. woe

  2844. to

  2845. you

  2846. lawyers

  2847. for

  2848. you

  2849. have

  2850. taken

  2851. away

  2852. the

  2853. key

  2854. to

  2855. knowledge

  2856. the

  2857. key

  2858. of

  2859. knowledge

  2860. you

  2861. did

  2862. not

  2863. enter

  2864. yourselves

  2865. and

  2866. you

  2867. hindered

  2868. those

  2869. who

  2870. were

  2871. entering

  2872. even

  2873. though

  2874. these

  2875. teachers

  2876. of

  2877. God's

  2878. law

  2879. believed

  2880. that

  2881. they

  2882. held

  2883. the

  2884. key

  2885. to

  2886. eternal

  2887. life

  2888. to

  2889. the

  2890. kingdom

  2891. of

  2892. God

  2893. they

  2894. in fact

  2895. did

  2896. not

  2897. have

  2898. the

  2899. key

  2900. themselves

  2901. they

  2902. could

  2903. not

  2904. enter

  2905. themselves

  2906. in fact

  2907. they

  2908. were

  2909. hindering

  2910. people

  2911. who

  2912. were

  2913. entering

  2914. instead

  2915. of

  2916. clarifying

  2917. God's

  2918. word

  2919. they

  2920. complicated

  2921. God's

  2922. word

  2923. by adding

  2924. human

  2925. traditions

  2926. and

  2927. regulations

  2928. instead

  2929. of

  2930. accepting

  2931. the

  2932. prophets

  2933. of

  2934. the

  2935. Lord

  2936. and

  2937. listening

  2938. to

  2939. them

  2940. they

  2941. rejected

  2942. them

  2943. and

  2944. turned

  2945. other

  2946. people

  2947. away

  2948. from

  2949. them

  2950. and

  2951. by

  2952. doing

  2953. these

  2954. things

  2955. these

  2956. lawyers

  2957. hindered

  2958. people

  2959. from

  2960. knowing

  2961. God

  2962. entering

  2963. into

  2964. his

  2965. kingdom

  2966. hypocrisy

  2967. and false

  2968. teaching

  2969. heresy

  2970. these

  2971. are

  2972. not

  2973. just

  2974. problems

  2975. for

  2976. us

  2977. they're

  2978. hindrances

  2979. to

  2980. other

  2981. people

  2982. around

  2983. us

  2984. this

  2985. is a

  2986. heavy

  2987. hitting

  2988. message

  2989. and

  2990. if

  2991. you're

  2992. like

  2993. me

  2994. you've

  2995. been

  2996. convicted

  2997. by

  2998. this

  2999. passage

  3000. I've

  3001. done

  3002. this

  3003. and

  3004. that's

  3005. where

  3006. we

  3007. receive

  3008. hope

  3009. in

  3010. verses

  3011. 53

  3012. to

  3013. 54

  3014. as

  3015. Jesus

  3016. went

  3017. away

  3018. from

  3019. there

  3020. the

  3021. scribes

  3022. and

  3023. the

  3024. Pharisees

  3025. began

  3026. to

  3027. press

  3028. him

  3029. hard

  3030. and

  3031. to

  3032. provoke

  3033. him

  3034. to

  3035. speak

  3036. about

  3037. many

  3038. things

  3039. lying

  3040. in

  3041. wait

  3042. for

  3043. him

  3044. to

  3045. catch

  3046. him

  3047. in

  3048. something

  3049. he

  3050. might

  3051. say

  3052. what

  3053. is

  3054. this

  3055. pointing

  3056. to

  3057. from

  3058. this

  3059. point

  3060. on

  3061. the

  3062. hostility

  3063. of

  3064. the

  3065. scribes

  3066. and

  3067. the

  3068. Pharisees

  3069. against

  3070. Jesus

  3071. escalates

  3072. sharply

  3073. until

  3074. chapters

  3075. 22

  3076. to

  3077. 23

  3078. when

  3079. they

  3080. plot

  3081. and

  3082. execute

  3083. their

  3084. plot

  3085. to

  3086. arrest

  3087. Jesus

  3088. using

  3089. the

  3090. civil

  3091. authorities

  3092. and

  3093. to

  3094. bring

  3095. him

  3096. to

  3097. his

  3098. death

  3099. on

  3100. the

  3101. cross

  3102. and

  3103. that's

  3104. the

  3105. most

  3106. important

  3107. point

  3108. from

  3109. this

  3110. passage

  3111. because

  3112. we

  3113. have

  3114. all

  3115. done

  3116. this

  3117. I

  3118. have

  3119. done

  3120. this

  3121. we

  3122. pretended

  3123. to

  3124. be

  3125. righteous

  3126. on

  3127. the

  3128. outside

  3129. even

  3130. though

  3131. we're

  3132. sinful

  3133. on

  3134. the

  3135. inside

  3136. but

  3137. that's

  3138. why

  3139. Jesus

  3140. died

  3141. outwardly

  3142. as

  3143. a

  3144. sinner

  3145. he

  3146. died

  3147. a

  3148. sinner's

  3149. death

  3150. even

  3151. though

  3152. inwardly

  3153. he

  3154. was

  3155. the

  3156. only

  3157. man

  3158. in

  3159. human

  3160. history

  3161. that

  3162. had

  3163. no

  3164. sin

  3165. we

  3166. have

  3167. moralistically

  3168. and

  3169. legalistically

  3170. kept

  3171. the

  3172. minutia

  3173. of

  3174. the

  3175. law

  3176. while

  3177. neglecting

  3178. the

  3179. more

  3180. important

  3181. commands

  3182. and

  3183. that's

  3184. why

  3185. Jesus

  3186. had

  3187. to

  3188. live

  3189. a

  3190. perfect

  3191. life

  3192. of

  3193. obedience

  3194. and

  3195. he

  3196. died

  3197. to

  3198. satisfy

  3199. the

  3200. requirements

  3201. all

  3202. the

  3203. requirements

  3204. of

  3205. the

  3206. law

  3207. from

  3208. the

  3209. minutia

  3210. to

  3211. the

  3212. most

  3213. important

  3214. we

  3215. have

  3216. sought

  3217. prominent

  3218. seats

  3219. and

  3220. long

  3221. greetings

  3222. from

  3223. people

  3224. robbing

  3225. God

  3226. of

  3227. his

  3228. glory

  3229. and

  3230. that's

  3231. why

  3232. Jesus

  3233. had

  3234. to

  3235. die

  3236. on

  3237. the

  3238. cross

  3239. the

  3240. lowest

  3241. seat

  3242. reserved

  3243. for

  3244. criminal

  3245. slaves

  3246. and

  3247. he

  3248. endured

  3249. the

  3250. mockery

  3251. and

  3252. humiliation

  3253. from

  3254. people

  3255. so

  3256. that

  3257. we

  3258. might

  3259. be

  3260. seated

  3261. with

  3262. God

  3263. and

  3264. be

  3265. ushered

  3266. into

  3267. his

  3268. glory

  3269. life

  3270. eternal

  3271. we

  3272. have

  3273. all

  3274. at

  3275. one

  3276. point

  3277. rebelled

  3278. against

  3279. God

  3280. by

  3281. living

  3282. for

  3283. ourselves

  3284. and

  3285. for

  3286. our

  3287. glory

  3288. rather

  3289. than

  3290. for

  3291. him

  3292. but

  3293. by

  3294. doing

  3295. this

  3296. we

  3297. put

  3298. ourselves

  3299. squarely

  3300. in the

  3301. line

  3302. of

  3303. the

  3304. Pharisees

  3305. and

  3306. the

  3307. scribes

  3308. who

  3309. are

  3310. accountable

  3311. to

  3312. God

  3313. for

  3314. the

  3315. blood

  3316. of

  3317. all

  3318. the

  3319. prophets

  3320. and

  3321. the

  3322. most

  3323. important

  3324. blood

  3325. that

  3326. we

  3327. have

  3328. shed

  3329. through

  3330. this

  3331. resistance

  3332. and

  3333. rebellion

  3334. is

  3335. the

  3336. blood

  3337. of

  3338. Jesus

  3339. the

  3340. ultimate

  3341. prophet

  3342. the

  3343. Messiah

  3344. the

  3345. Son

  3346. of

  3347. God

  3348. but

  3349. this

  3350. is

  3351. the

  3352. amazing

  3353. thing

  3354. the

  3355. blood

  3356. of

  3357. Abel

  3358. cries

  3359. out

  3360. for

  3361. our

  3362. for

  3363. vengeance

  3364. the

  3365. blood

  3366. of

  3367. Zechariah

  3368. clamors

  3369. for

  3370. our

  3371. condemnation

  3372. the

  3373. blood

  3374. of

  3375. all

  3376. of

  3377. these

  3378. prophets

  3379. call

  3380. for

  3381. justice

  3382. for

  3383. us

  3384. to

  3385. be

  3386. condemned

  3387. to

  3388. eternal

  3389. destruction

  3390. in

  3391. hell

  3392. but

  3393. Hebrews

  3394. 12

  3395. 24

  3396. tells

  3397. us

  3398. that

  3399. the

  3400. sprinkled

  3401. blood

  3402. of

  3403. Jesus

  3404. speaks

  3405. a

  3406. better

  3407. word

  3408. than

  3409. the

  3410. blood

  3411. of

  3412. Abel

  3413. the

  3414. blood

  3415. of

  3416. Jesus

  3417. does

  3418. not

  3419. cry

  3420. out

  3421. for

  3422. vengeance

  3423. the

  3424. blood

  3425. of

  3426. Jesus

  3427. cries

  3428. out

  3429. for

  3430. our

  3431. vindication

  3432. the

  3433. blood

  3434. of

  3435. Jesus

  3436. cries

  3437. out

  3438. for

  3439. our

  3440. justification

  3441. the

  3442. blood

  3443. of

  3444. Jesus

  3445. declares

  3446. that

  3447. our

  3448. sins

  3449. so

  3450. grave

  3451. and

  3452. our

  3453. spiritual

  3454. conditions

  3455. so

  3456. lethal

  3457. have

  3458. been

  3459. made

  3460. right

  3461. have

  3462. been

  3463. paid

  3464. for

  3465. have

  3466. been

  3467. made

  3468. new

  3469. through

  3470. what

  3471. Jesus

  3472. did

  3473. by

  3474. dying

  3475. on

  3476. the

  3477. cross

  3478. for

  3479. our

  3480. sins

  3481. and

  3482. being

  3483. raised

  3484. to

  3485. new

  3486. life

  3487. that's

  3488. what we

  3489. call the

  3490. gospel of

  3491. Jesus

  3492. Christ

  3493. and

  3494. that's

  3495. the

  3496. hope

  3497. that

  3498. this

  3499. passage

  3500. points

  3501. us

  3502. to

  3503. take

  3504. a

  3505. moment

  3506. now

  3507. to

  3508. reflect

  3509. on

  3510. this

  3511. reality

  3512. for

  3513. a few

  3514. moments

  3515. in

  3516. what

  3517. areas

  3518. of

  3519. your

  3520. life

  3521. is

  3522. the

  3523. Lord

  3524. calling

  3525. to

  3526. repentance

  3527. and

  3528. greater

  3529. conformity

  3530. to

  3531. Christ

  3532. in

  3533. what

  3534. ways

  3535. is

  3536. God

  3537. calling

  3538. to

  3539. rely

  3540. less

  3541. on

  3542. your

  3543. self

  3544. righteousness

  3545. but

  3546. on

  3547. the

  3548. righteousness

  3549. of

  3550. Christ

  3551. For
