  1. 1.16, I'm going to read it out loud for us.

  2. I love the Lord because He has heard my voice and my pleas for mercy.

  3. Because He inclined His ear to me, therefore I will call on Him as long as I live.

  4. The snares of death encompassed me, the pangs of Sheol laid hold on me.

  5. I suffered distress and anguish.

  6. Then I called on the name of the Lord.

  7. O Lord, I pray, deliver my soul.

  8. Gracious is the Lord and righteous.

  9. Our God is merciful.

  10. The Lord preserves the simple.

  11. When I was brought low, He saved me.

  12. Return, O my soul, to your rest.

  13. For the Lord has dealt bountifully with you.

  14. For you have delivered my soul from death, my eyes from tears, my feet from stumbling.

  15. I will walk before the Lord in the land of the living.

  16. I believed.

  17. Even when I spoke, I am greatly afflicted.

  18. I said in my alarm, all mankind are liars.

  19. What shall I render to the Lord for all His benefits to me?

  20. I will lift up the cup of salvation and call on the name of the Lord.

  21. I will pay my vows to the Lord in the presence of all His people.

  22. Precious in the sight of the Lord is the death of His saints.

  23. O Lord, I am your servant.

  24. I am your servant, the son of your maidservant.

  25. You have lost my bonds.

  26. I will offer to you the sacrifice of thanksgiving and call on the name of the Lord.

  27. I will pay my vows to the Lord in the presence of all His people,

  28. in the courts of the house of the Lord, in your midst, O Jerusalem.

  29. So praise the Lord.

  30. I don't know if any of you guys have had a close shave with death.

  31. Yeah?

  32. Tell us about it.

  33. One time I almost choked on steak.

  34. But like I literally was not breathing.

  35. But we had PMT over for dinner that night.

  36. So she actually did a time look on me.

  37. Praise God.

  38. Not a very great story, but it was really scary.

  39. It must have been scary.

  40. What was going through your mind?

  41. What was going through your mind after you were saved?

  42. Thank God Angela was here.

  43. Yeah.

  44. What a not coincidence, right?

  45. Yeah.

  46. Yeah, I like ran up to the fridge to get water

  47. because that's what my 12-year-old self thought would be the best thing for me.

  48. And Angela was like, come here.

  49. And so she was like doing the high look and it didn't work the first time.

  50. I was like, I'm going to die.

  51. Oh my gosh, I'm going to see Jesus.

  52. Goodbye world.

  53. But then it came out.

  54. Wow.

  55. Yeah.

  56. That's great.

  57. Yeah, it's a great story.

  58. I think you guys probably heard of our story when we spun out of the highway

  59. because of black ice.

  60. That's probably the closest we ever came to it.

  61. It's like a...

  62. And then afterward, it's just that relief.

  63. Like you think you might die and then you don't.

  64. And it's just that relief, overwhelming sense of relief.

  65. And then not much else matters at that point.

  66. Like I don't care that my car's totaled.

  67. My family's okay.

  68. You know, like it's like a...

  69. It's like...

  70. So the psalmist, like that kind of context,

  71. it's because the psalmist has just had a very close shave with death.

  72. Hey John.

  73. We're in Psalm 116.

  74. Your shirt still looks new.

  75. How's that possible?

  76. We're not special occasions.

  77. You don't wear it enough.

  78. You wear it enough too much.

  79. I sleep in my mind.

  80. And so the psalmist has had a close shave with death.

  81. And he's experiencing this sense of relief.

  82. And he's remembering how God delivered him in verses 12, verses 1 to 11.

  83. And then in verses 12 to 19, which is kind of the second half,

  84. he's speaking about rendering to God the vows he made when he was in trouble.

  85. So remembering God's deliverance and then rendering his vows to the Lord.

  86. So in the first part, verses 1 to 11,

  87. it's about remembering God's deliverance.

  88. And it begins this way in verse 1.

  89. I love the Lord because he has heard my voice and my pleas for mercy.

  90. And we see this over and over again through our scripture.

  91. God doesn't hear us because we love and serve him.

  92. We love and serve him because he hears us, because he loves us,

  93. because he has shown his mercy.

  94. We love him because he first loved us.

  95. And so the key to greater love for God always is remembering God's deliverance.

  96. So if we don't love God, if we don't feel zeal for him,

  97. if we feel lukewarm in our affections,

  98. if we feel ourselves getting bigger and bigger in our lives

  99. and we're having less of God in our lives,

  100. we need to remember God's deliverance.

  101. And this section has a roughly chiastic structure.

  102. That's a mirroring symmetrical structure.

  103. And so you can see that clearly in verses 2 to 9.

  104. So verse 2 says,

  105. I will call on him as long as I live.

  106. And that mirrors verse 9.

  107. It says,

  108. I will walk before the Lord in the land of the living.

  109. And then verses 3 to 4,

  110. which recall how the psalmist cried out to the Lord,

  111. deliver my soul from the suffering and threat of death.

  112. That mirrors verses 7 to 8,

  113. which say,

  114. you have delivered my soul from death.

  115. So just similar concepts, ideas,

  116. and mirroring.

  117. And not all of us have experienced close shave with death,

  118. but all of us as Christians have experienced

  119. God's rescue from the spiritual death

  120. that the Bible describes, right,

  121. over and over again.

  122. Ephesians 2.5 says that we were all once dead in our trespasses,

  123. but made alive together with Christ.

  124. So we're people who, by definition,

  125. have passed from death to life.

  126. And it was more than just a close shave, right?

  127. We were actually dead in our trespasses and sins.

  128. But Christ delivered us

  129. while we were rotten to the core,

  130. spiritually speaking,

  131. corpses.

  132. Christ delivered us from death

  133. by dying on the cross for our sins

  134. in our place

  135. so that we might be redeemed.

  136. We might be counted as righteous.

  137. And the logic of Psalm 116

  138. is that those who have been delivered by God

  139. from death

  140. should live for God in life.

  141. And we owe Him our lives.

  142. We live because of Him

  143. so we should live for Him.

  144. And the spiritual life we experience here and now

  145. because of Jesus Christ

  146. like the eternal resurrection life

  147. that we will have in the future

  148. are to be lived in worship of God.

  149. Our life is to be life of worship.

  150. And what God has done for us

  151. is all the more amazing

  152. when we remember who God is

  153. and who we are.

  154. And that's what verse 5 and 6 are getting at.

  155. Verse 5 is an affirmation of who God is.

  156. And verse 6 is a statement

  157. of our relative unworthiness before God.

  158. Verse 5 says,

  159. Gracious is the Lord and righteous.

  160. Our God is merciful.

  161. In contrast, verse 6 says,

  162. We are simple.

  163. We were brought low.

  164. But because God is gracious and merciful,

  165. He saved us.

  166. And this is in stark contrast

  167. to our human friends and allies.

  168. He says in verses 10 to 11,

  169. the psalmist says,

  170. I believed,

  171. even when I spoke,

  172. I am greatly afflicted.

  173. So he's saying,

  174. even when I was crying out to God,

  175. I am greatly afflicted.

  176. He believed in the Lord.

  177. And he's saying,

  178. I said in my alarm,

  179. all mankind are liars.

  180. And so,

  181. this is the first part of that.

  182. Verse 10 is cited in Paul's letter

  183. to 2 Corinthians 4,

    2 Corinthians 4:13–14

  184. verses 13 to 14,

  185. where he says that

  186. in spite of the affliction

  187. that we experience as Christians,

  188. suffering that we experience in life,

  189. we believe,

  190. he says,

  191. and so we also speak,

  192. knowing that he who raised the Lord Jesus

  193. will raise us also with Jesus

  194. and bring us with you into his presence.

  195. So even in the midst of great affliction,

  196. like the psalmist is going through,

  197. even when our experience

  198. in our present life

  199. is just suffering

  200. and tribulation,

  201. we can still persist in faith

  202. in God's ultimate deliverance.

  203. So when the psalmist was in desperate need,

  204. no man came to his aid.

  205. Their promise of friendship

  206. and loyalty proved empty.

  207. So he declared,

  208. all mankind are liars.

  209. But God,

  210. he is true.

  211. God,

  212. he is faithful.

  213. Gracious is the Lord

  214. and righteous

  215. and God is merciful.

  216. It's similar to kind of

  217. what Paul writes about

  218. toward the end of his life

  219. in 2 Timothy 4,

    2 Timothy 4:16–18

  220. verses 16 to 18.

  221. He says,

  222. at my first defense,

  223. this is his trial in Rome.

  224. At my first defense,

  225. no one came to stand by me,

  226. but all deserted me.

  227. But the Lord stood by me

  228. and strengthened me.

  229. So I was rescued

  230. from the lion's mouth.

  231. The Lord will rescue me

  232. from every evil deed

  233. and bring me safely

  234. into his heavenly kingdom.

  235. So this is a really

  236. wonderful promise.

  237. Our best friends

  238. might betray us,

  239. right?

  240. Our fathers and mothers

  241. might reject us.

  242. Our spouses might leave us,

  243. but God is faithful

  244. and true.

  245. All mankind are liars,

  246. but the Lord,

  247. he is gracious and true.

  248. And so we can cry out

  249. like the psalmist,

  250. I believe,

  251. even when I spoke,

  252. I am greatly afflicted.

  253. And because of God's

  254. unchanging character,

  255. that's why we can have

  256. unwavering faith,

  257. even in the face of death,

  258. both physical death

  259. and spiritual death.

  260. Even when we experience

  261. tragedy, tragedies,

  262. defeats in our lives,

  263. we can have faith.

  264. I believe,

  265. even when I spoke,

  266. I am greatly afflicted.

  267. And after remembering

  268. God's deliverance,

  269. in verses 12 to 19,

  270. the psalmist speaks

  271. of rendering his vows

  272. to the Lord in worship.

  273. And he begins

  274. with the rhetorical question,

  275. what shall I render

  276. to the Lord

  277. for all his benefits to me?

  278. I love that it's phrased

  279. as a rhetorical question

  280. because it kind of conveys

  281. that sense of

  282. there's nothing I can do.

  283. Like, there's nothing

  284. I can do to repay,

  285. to render enough

  286. to God

  287. for what he has done for me,

  288. for all the benefits

  289. that I have enjoyed.

  290. What shall we render

  291. to the Lord?

  292. Yet even though

  293. we can't repay,

  294. we have to respond somehow

  295. because we can't help ourselves.

  296. So the psalmist answers

  297. the question himself

  298. in verses 13 to 19.

  299. And that too

  300. is structured symmetrically

  301. like the first section.

  302. So verse 13,

  303. he speaks of

  304. lifting up the cup of salvation

  305. and calling upon

  306. the name of the Lord.

  307. And then that matches

  308. verse 17,

  309. which speaks of

  310. offering the sacrifice

  311. of thanksgiving

  312. and calling

  313. upon the name

  314. of the Lord.

  315. So this is a picture

  316. of worship at the temple.

  317. Lifting up the cup

  318. is a libation offering,

  319. wine offering.

  320. Offering the sacrifice

  321. is probably an animal sacrifice,

  322. thanksgiving.

  323. And then verses 14 and 18

  324. are exactly the same.

  325. I will pay my vows

  326. to the Lord

  327. in the presence

  328. of all his people.

  329. So the first section

  330. dealt with what God has done.

  331. And this section

  332. is dealing with

  333. how we should respond.

  334. We have to pay our vows

  335. to the Lord

  336. in the presence

  337. of all his people.

  338. A vow is a voluntary

  339. but a binding agreement.

  340. We enter into it voluntarily

  341. but once we've made it

  342. it's binding.

  343. And so a believer

  344. in this situation,

  345. the psalmist,

  346. has said to the Lord,

  347. Lord, if you deliver me

  348. from this threat,

  349. I vow to do such and such

  350. for your glory.

  351. And so by entrusting himself

  352. to God's deliverance,

  353. the psalmist has put

  354. certain obligations

  355. upon himself

  356. as a worshiper of God.

  357. And this is explained further

  358. in verse 15 to 16.

  359. Precious in the sight

  360. of the Lord

  361. is the death of his saints.

  362. That's verse 15.

  363. This is sometimes

  364. misunderstood by people.

  365. It doesn't mean

  366. that God is pleased by

  367. or eager for

  368. the deaths of his saints.

  369. Come on, more people.

  370. Come die for me.

  371. You know, it's like

  372. that's not what

  373. this is talking about.

  374. The word precious

  375. is used most often

  376. throughout scripture

  377. to refer to precious stones.

  378. And the word means

  379. rare, costly,

  380. weighty.

  381. So it's the exact opposite

  382. of what pagans

  383. in the ancient world

  384. frequently said.

  385. And what they said was,

  386. whom the gods love

  387. die young.

  388. Because they want

  389. these people to be with them

  390. because they love them.

  391. So they make them die young.

  392. So that's what

  393. the pagans said.

  394. But this is the exact opposite

  395. of that.

  396. The psalmist is saying

  397. that the death

  398. of one of his people

  399. is not something

  400. that God brings about

  401. flippantly.

  402. It's rather something

  403. that's weighty to him.

  404. It's serious to him.

  405. It's significant to him

  406. and costly to him.

  407. We are valuable to him

  408. is what he's saying.

  409. And that's why

  410. he saved us.

  411. Verse 16,

  412. O Lord,

  413. I am your servant.

  414. I am your servant,

  415. the son of your maidservant.

  416. You have lost

  417. my bonds.

  418. So in the

  419. bonds

  420. referred to here

  421. is probably

  422. the same snare

  423. of death

  424. mentioned in verse 3.

  425. So God

  426. loosed him

  427. from the bonds

  428. of death.

  429. And by crying out

  430. to him for salvation,

  431. by crying out to God

  432. that he would free us

  433. from the bondage

  434. of death,

  435. we have put ourselves

  436. under a certain obligation.

  437. We become his servants.

  438. Or rather,

  439. because we are his servants,

  440. God responds

  441. to free us

  442. because we are his people.

  443. And according

  444. to Exodus 21,

    Exodus 21:4

  445. verse 4,

  446. the children of slaves

  447. belong to the master.

  448. And so this

  449. is referring

  450. to that concept.

  451. As heirs

  452. of the servants

  453. of God,

  454. the slaves of God,

  455. we too belong

  456. to God.

  457. We are the chosen people,

  458. his elect.

  459. We are his servants.

  460. And for that reason,

  461. because of our relationship

  462. to him,

  463. we're valuable to him.

  464. And so God

  465. intervenes

  466. to free us

  467. from death

  468. and so that we might

  469. be free to serve him.

  470. What Paul talks

  471. about in Romans 6,

  472. but thanks be to God

  473. that you who were

  474. once slaves of sin

  475. have become obedient

  476. from the heart

  477. to the standard of teaching

  478. to which you were committed

  479. and having been set free

  480. from sin

  481. have become slaves

  482. of righteousness.

  483. So we are slaves of God,

  484. right,

  485. according to this passage.

  486. We were bought

  487. with a price.

  488. And as the property

  489. of God,

  490. we are to practice

  491. absolute obedience,

  492. total submission,

  493. and exclusive preoccupation

  494. with his purposes

  495. and priorities.

  496. Sometimes we're uncomfortable

  497. with that kind of language,

  498. but that's the reality,

  499. right?

  500. So as Christians,

  501. brothers and sisters,

  502. we have to ask ourselves,

  503. right,

  504. are you preoccupied

  505. with pleasing your master?

  506. Is that what consumes you?

  507. Or are we merely

  508. pleasing ourselves

  509. with our lives?

  510. Because nothing else

  511. loosed our bonds.

  512. It was the Lord,

  513. God who loosed our bonds.

  514. God loosed our bonds.

  515. God purchased us

  516. with the blood of Christ

  517. and so we belong to him.

  518. And those who have been

  519. delivered by God

  520. from death

  521. should live for God

  522. in life.

  523. That's really the main point

  524. of this psalm.

  525. Let's respond to that

  526. with the song.
