  1. Good morning, my name is Sean. I'm one of the pastors of Trinity Kendrick Church.

  2. It's my privilege to preach God's Word to you this morning.

  3. We are in Luke chapter 14.

    Luke 14 chapter mention

  4. If you do not have a Bible, please raise your hand.

  5. And Sungmin's going around right now with a few Bibles that you can use.

  6. You could grab one and read it this morning while we're going through.

  7. So we've been going through the Gospel of Luke and we are in chapter 14, verses 25 to 35.

  8. Let me pray for the reading and preaching of God's Word.

  9. Heavenly Father, we are a people that are governed by your Word.

  10. Because we worship not a mute idol that cannot speak, but a God who speaks.

  11. A God to whom we are accountable.

  12. God who is Lord over our lives and over the universe.

  13. We come to you humbly, desiring to submit ourselves to your laws, to the guidance you provide in your Word.

  14. So please now teach us this morning what it means to be a follower of Christ.

  15. What it means to be a true disciple.

  16. And shape us more and more to be the kind of disciples you want us to be.

  17. In Jesus' name we pray.

  18. Amen.

  19. Amen.

  20. Luke 14, 25 to 35.

  21. Now great crowds accompanied him, and he turned and said to them,

  22. If anyone comes to me and does not hate his own father and mother, and wife and children, and brothers and sisters,

  23. yes, and even his own life, he cannot be my disciple.

  24. For which of you, desiring to build a tower, does not first sit down and count the cost, whether he has enough to complete it?

  25. Otherwise, when he has laid a foundation and is not able to finish, all who see it begin to mock him, saying,

  26. This man began to build and was not able to finish.

  27. Or what king, going out to encounter another king in war, will not sit down first and deliberate whether he is able with 10,000 to meet him who comes against him with 20,000?

  28. And if not, while the other is yet a great way off, he sends a delegation and asks for terms of peace.

  29. So therefore, any one of you who does not renounce all that he has cannot be my disciple.

  30. Salt is good, but if salt has lost its taste, how shall its saltiness be restored?

  31. It is of no use, either for the soil or for the manure pile.

  32. It is thrown away.

  33. He who has ears to hear, let him hear.

  34. This is God's infallible authoritative word.

  35. We've all made decisions in our lives that have proved costly at one point or another.

  36. Going to college, for example, is costly.

  37. It's not only a commitment of your next four years.

  38. It's, for many people, a commitment to repay debt for the next 10 or 20 years.

  39. Making that decision means that you're not going to be able to do a lot of other things.

  40. It's a consequential decision.

  41. It's a costly decision.

  42. Similarly, getting a pet is costly.

  43. Not only the cost of the pet itself, but the cost of vet visits, food, pet sitters, grooming, and time spent in walking and cleaning and entertaining the pet.

  44. It's a choice with consequences.

  45. Getting married is costly.

  46. Having children is costly.

  47. It transforms all of your relationships and radically reorients your life.

  48. Of course, there are many benefits to all these decisions.

  49. But there are also significant costs.

  50. The costs vary, but all of our decisions to varying degrees, small or large, have costs attached to them.

  51. And it's wise to think about those costs before we make those decisions.

  52. And our passage for today is a turning point in the Gospel of Luke.

  53. Because from chapter 11 until now, Jesus has spent most of the time really engaging in debate with the Jewish leaders, the Pharisees.

  54. And having kind of controversial conversations with them.

  55. But from now on until he dies on the cross for the sins of his people, the focus is really on Christian discipleship.

  56. What does it mean to be a disciple?

  57. To be a follower of Jesus?

  58. Jesus.

  59. And here in Luke 14, 25 to 35, Jesus teaches the crowds that are following him that they must renounce all other allegiances in order to follow him.

  60. That's the main point of our passage.

  61. We must renounce all other allegiances in order to follow Jesus.

  62. And it's a full commitment, not a halfway commitment.

  63. And in this passage, it talks about the impossibility of a halfway discipleship.

  64. And then a foolishness of halfway discipleship.

  65. And the uselessness of halfway discipleship.

  66. So first, let's talk about the impossibility of halfway discipleship in verses 25 to 27.

  67. Verse 25 begins this way.

  68. Now great crowds accompanied him, and Jesus turned and said to them.

  69. Luke frequently notes the presence of large crowds following Jesus.

  70. But instead of regaling the masses, entertaining them with a crowd-pleasing speech,

  71. often Jesus preaches his most hard-hitting messages when he has crowds following him.

  72. And that's because Jesus is not looking for adoring fans.

  73. Jesus is not looking for fans, but for committed disciples.

  74. He's not looking to boost his numbers or his approval ratings.

  75. And Jesus explains in the parable of the weeds in Matthew chapter 13,

    Matthew 13 chapter mention

  76. that whenever God plants the seed of the gospel, things grow.

  77. But within the wheat that grows, among the wheat that grow, there's also weeds.

  78. The weeds and the wheat always grow together.

  79. And so Jesus, because he understands this reality well,

  80. he's not impressed or swayed by the crowds, the size of the crowds that follow him.

  81. Instead of seeking to appease the crowds,

  82. so then Jesus appeals to them with this high call to discipleship.

  83. And actually he is actively trying to dissuade people

  84. who have not counted the cost of following Jesus from following him.

  85. He wants everyone that follows him to count the cost before following him.

  86. So Jesus says to the crowds in verses 26 to 27,

  87. If anyone comes to me and does not hate his own father and mother,

  88. and wife and children, and brothers and sisters, yes,

  89. and even his own life, he cannot be my disciple.

  90. Whoever does not bear his own cross and come after me cannot be my disciple.

  91. This is the most blunt statement on Christian discipleship in the Gospel of Luke.

  92. And it's intentionally phrased in a way that's shocking and diametrical.

  93. When we hear the word hate, and as English speakers,

  94. we immediately think of it in terms of our emotion, right?

  95. Having a malicious intent towards someone or really despising someone.

  96. But Jesus is not teaching us here to despise our family members.

  97. Rather, the love and hate dichotomy is a Hebrew idiom

  98. that is frequently used to indicate the choice of one over another.

  99. When you're making an important consequential decision,

  100. and you're choosing one thing over another,

  101. that's often described in ancient Hebrew in terms of love and hate.

  102. So in English, we might say something like,

  103. I love God more than I love my family.

  104. But an ancient Jew would say,

  105. I love God and hate my family.

  106. It's to show the way they have made a clear choice to prefer one

  107. and to prioritize one over the other.

  108. It's not unlike a jealous sibling.

  109. Many of you guys have siblings.

  110. A jealous sibling that protests to his or her parent,

  111. you don't love me.

  112. Of course, what they really mean is,

  113. you don't love me as much as you love my brother or my sister.

  114. But they put it that way to communicate the fact

  115. that they have made a clear preference,

  116. a choice of one over the other.

  117. You don't love me.

  118. And so that's what's going on here.

  119. And you see this throughout the Bible.

  120. Genesis 29.30 says that Jacob loved Rachel more than Leah.

  121. But then it describes that priority this way in the following verses.

  122. It says,

  123. Jacob went into Rachel also,

  124. and he loved Rachel more than Leah,

  125. and served Laban for another seven years.

  126. When the Lord saw that Leah was hated,

  127. he opened her womb,

  128. but Rachel was bare.

  129. So the reality is,

  130. he loved Leah less than he loved Rachel,

  131. but that is described in terms of hate,

  132. that Leah was hated.

  133. It says,

  134. And Leah conceived and bore a son,

  135. and she called his name Reuben,

  136. for she said,

  137. Because the Lord has looked upon my affliction,

  138. for now my husband will love me.

  139. So that's what this is referring to.

  140. That's the same expression that is used later in Malachi 1.2-3,

  141. quoted in Romans 9.13,

  142. As it is written,

  143. Jacob I loved,

  144. but Esau I hated.

  145. Here God's not saying that he does not love Esau in an emotional sense.

  146. Rather, it's the language of covenantal election,

  147. that God chose to fulfill his promises to his people through Jacob,

  148. and not through Esau.

  149. That God chose Jacob over Esau.

  150. That's what that's expressing.

  151. It's a language of choice.

  152. And that's why,

  153. if you look at the parallel of this Luke passage in Matthew 10.37,

  154. the Hebrew idiom is explained in a more understandable way,

  155. this way,

  156. whoever loves father or mother more than me is not worthy of me.

  157. And whoever loves son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me.

  158. So then Jesus is not telling us literally to hate our family members.

  159. In fact,

  160. one of the Ten Commandments is to honor your father and mother.

  161. And 1 Timothy 5.8 teaches us that if anyone does not provide for his relatives,

  162. and especially for members of his household,

  163. he has denied the faith and is worse than an unbeliever.

  164. So you should love your families and take care of them.

  165. That's not what Jesus is talking about.

  166. But let's not water down what Jesus is saying, however.

  167. Because he is demanding that we make a clear choice.

  168. Because if you love your family more than you love Jesus,

  169. then you cannot be a disciple of Jesus.

  170. Notice the language that is used.

  171. It doesn't say that if you love your family more than you love me,

  172. that's not ideal.

  173. It says that it's impossible.

  174. He doesn't say that if you love your family more than me,

  175. then you'll be a bad disciple.

  176. No, he says if you love your family more than me,

  177. you cannot be my disciple.

  178. You must make a clear choice to prefer Jesus and following him

  179. over all other commitments and relationships.

  180. And this was particularly important in this context,

  181. in the ancient world,

  182. because Christians would encounter all kinds of persecution.

  183. And most Jews who would convert in this context

  184. to follow Jesus Christ

  185. would then be subsequently disowned

  186. and rejected by their own family members.

  187. And so this was a cost that they had to count and to bear.

  188. And in our church, actually,

  189. there are several people in our church

  190. that have experienced similar persecution

  191. or pressure from their own family members

  192. for following Jesus.

  193. But for most of us, we haven't experienced that.

  194. But even for us,

  195. this is an important requirement to heed.

  196. Do you love God more than you love your father and mother?

  197. Because Jesus says,

  198. if anyone comes to me

  199. and does not hate his own father and mother,

  200. he cannot be my disciple.

  201. Karen Fingerman,

  202. who teaches human development and family sciences

  203. at the University of Texas, Austin,

  204. published a paper last year

  205. entitled Millennials and Their Parents.

  206. We have a lot of millennials in our church.

  207. I think I barely made the cut.

  208. You guys don't believe me.

  209. So she's documenting the changes

  210. that have taken place in society

  211. that have made young adults more dependent on

  212. and closer to their parents than ever before.

  213. Some of the changes that she notes

  214. is that first,

  215. there was a rise of helicopter parenting

  216. and tiger moms

  217. who are involved in every facet of their kids' lives

  218. and really trying to dictate

  219. the course of their lives

  220. to the nth degree.

  221. So that's the first phenomenon.

  222. The second phenomenon

  223. was the simultaneous rise

  224. of the perceived importance of education

  225. and the cost of education,

  226. which means more and more people

  227. end up going to college

  228. and getting higher education

  229. and also end up being more in debt

  230. for a long time.

  231. And the third phenomenon

  232. is the lack of high-paying job opportunities

  233. when millennials first began

  234. to enter the workforce.

  235. And so all of these things

  236. have conspired together

  237. to make young adults

  238. stay with their parents

  239. or remain dependent on their parents

  240. for much longer

  241. than previous generations have.

  242. And through that,

  243. they also develop

  244. very close relationships at times

  245. where sometimes adversarial

  246. kind of love-hate relationship

  247. but still very much desiring

  248. to please their parents.

  249. But if you desire

  250. to please your parents,

  251. if your desire

  252. to become something,

  253. to make them proud,

  254. is more important to you

  255. than pleasing the Lord Jesus Christ,

  256. you cannot be a disciple

  257. of Jesus Christ.

  258. Similarly, Jesus says,

  259. if anyone comes to me

  260. and does not hate his own wife,

  261. he cannot be my disciple.

  262. Of course, the vice versa

  263. is also true.

  264. If your life revolves

  265. around your boyfriend

  266. or girlfriend

  267. and you cannot give them up

  268. even though

  269. they are unbelievers

  270. drawing you

  271. farther and farther away

  272. from the Lord,

  273. if your desire

  274. to please your husband

  275. or to please your wife

  276. outweighs your desire

  277. to please the Lord,

  278. then you cannot be

  279. a disciple of Jesus Christ.

  280. If your spouse

  281. is the center of your life

  282. and your purposes

  283. and priorities

  284. flow from them

  285. and not from God,

  286. not only is it detrimental

  287. to them

  288. because then you're

  289. drawing them away

  290. from the Lord,

  291. you cannot be

  292. a disciple of Christ.

  293. If anyone comes to me

  294. and does not hate

  295. his own children,

  296. he cannot be

  297. my disciple,

  298. Joseph Epstein,

  299. not to be confused

  300. with Jeffrey Epstein

  301. that's been in the news,

  302. is an acclaimed author

  303. who writes in

  304. a weekly standard,

  305. in the weekly standard,

  306. and he wrote this article

  307. entitled Kindergarchy,

  308. and he writes in it

  309. that for the past

  310. 30 years at least,

  311. we have been lavishing

  312. vast expense

  313. and anxiety

  314. on our children

  315. in ways that are

  316. unprecedented

  317. in American

  318. and in perhaps

  319. any other national life.

  320. Such has been

  321. the weight of all

  322. this concern

  323. about children

  324. that it has exercised

  325. the subtle

  326. but pervasive

  327. tyranny

  328. of its own.

  329. This is what I call

  330. Kindergarchy,

  331. dreary,

  332. boring,

  333. sadly misguided

  334. Kindergarchy.

  335. Kindergarchy,

  336. a rule by children,

  337. that parents,

  338. our societies,

  339. are ruled by children.

  340. If going to

  341. our children's

  342. Little League

  343. baseball game

  344. on a Sunday morning

  345. is more important

  346. than bringing them

  347. to a worship service,

  348. what message

  349. are we sending

  350. to our children?

  351. That their

  352. extracurricular activities

  353. are more important

  354. than God?

  355. That their future success,

  356. worldly success

  357. is more important

  358. than their faith

  359. and godliness?

  360. That God

  361. can be kept

  362. on the periphery

  363. because

  364. they have more

  365. important things

  366. to do?

  367. God told Abraham

  368. in Genesis 22

    Genesis 22:2

  369. verse 2,

  370. Take your son,

  371. your only son Isaac,

  372. whom you love,

  373. and go to the land

  374. of Moriah

  375. and offer him there

  376. as a burnt offering

  377. on the mountain

  378. of which I shall

  379. tell you.

  380. God fully intended

  381. to continue

  382. Abraham's line

  383. through Isaac

  384. and he had

  385. explicitly promised

  386. him that.

  387. Yet God says this

  388. in order to test

  389. Abraham

  390. because

  391. his allegiance

  392. to the Lord God

  393. must proceed,

  394. must be prioritized

  395. over his love

  396. and allegiance

  397. to even his

  398. only son.

  399. God

  400. will

  401. be

  402. to the Lord.

  403. We parents

  404. in the church

  405. should love

  406. our children

  407. like the apple

  408. of our eyes,

  409. but we should

  410. never love them

  411. more than we

  412. love the Lord.

  413. When we do,

  414. we teach them

  415. that they are

  416. the center

  417. of this universe,

  418. not God.

  419. And their attitudes

  420. and their actions

  421. and their future

  422. will be shaped

  423. by that

  424. dangerous delusion.

  425. Moreover,

  426. if anyone

  427. comes to me,

  428. Jesus says,

  429. and does not hate

  430. his own brothers

  431. and sisters,

  432. he cannot be

  433. my disciple.

  434. Maybe this is not

  435. as much of a

  436. prominent issue,

  437. but there are times

  438. sometimes siblings

  439. really,

  440. they have this

  441. kind of shared

  442. identity.

  443. They call,

  444. you know,

  445. they're like the Smiths

  446. or we're the Smiths.

  447. I use these names

  448. because there's no

  449. Smiths, I think.

  450. Right?

  451. We're the Smiths

  452. or we're the Joneses.

  453. We are like this.

  454. My family is like this.

  455. We roll like this.

  456. We stick together.

  457. And that can become

  458. idolatrous.

  459. Their family identity,

  460. their identity

  461. with their siblings

  462. becomes stronger

  463. than their Christian

  464. identity,

  465. their lordship to Christ,

  466. their allegiance

  467. to Christ.

  468. Their allegiance

  469. to their brothers

  470. and sisters

  471. trump their allegiance

  472. to Jesus.

  473. And if they do,

  474. they cannot be

  475. a disciple of Jesus.

  476. And lastly,

  477. Jesus says in verse 26,

  478. If anyone comes to me

  479. and does not hate

  480. even his own life,

  481. he cannot be

  482. my disciple.

  483. If we love ourselves

  484. more than we love Christ,

  485. if we seek our glory

  486. more than we seek

  487. Christ's glory,

  488. if we live for ourselves

  489. rather than living for God,

  490. then we cannot be

  491. his disciple.

  492. Jesus continues that thought

  493. in verse 27,

  494. Whoever does not bear

  495. his own cross

  496. and come after me

  497. cannot be my disciple.

  498. A true disciple of Christ

  499. bears his own cross.

  500. Just as Jesus

  501. bore his cross

  502. and died to save

  503. his people

  504. from sin and death,

  505. we as followers of Christ

  506. must bear our own crosses.

  507. And the cross

  508. is a picture

  509. of total submission.

  510. We must surrender

  511. completely

  512. to God's authority.

  513. Paul puts it this way

  514. in Galatians 2.20,

  515. I have been crucified

  516. with Christ.

  517. It is no longer

  518. I who live,

  519. but Christ

  520. who lives in me.

  521. And the life

  522. I now live

  523. in the flesh,

  524. I live by faith

  525. in the Son of God

  526. who loved me

  527. and gave himself

  528. for me.

  529. to bear one's cross

  530. is to die to oneself

  531. and to live

  532. to Christ.

  533. We cannot remain

  534. the Lord of our own lives

  535. and make Christ

  536. our Lord

  537. at the same time.

  538. If Christ will be Lord,

  539. then we must

  540. be his servants.

  541. We must be willing

  542. to make sacrifices

  543. for Christ.

  544. We must be willing

  545. to suffer for Christ.

  546. We must be willing

  547. to say,

  548. no matter

  549. what it costs me,

  550. I will follow Christ.

  551. And it is in that

  552. submission and obedience

  553. that we are to go

  554. after Jesus.

  555. Note the sense

  556. of movement

  557. in this description

  558. of discipleship.

  559. Verse 26 speaks

  560. of coming to Jesus

  561. and then verse 27

  562. speaks of coming

  563. after Jesus,

  564. following in his

  565. footsteps,

  566. right?

  567. The coming to

  568. emphasizes the initial

  569. entry,

  570. coming after

  571. emphasizes the ongoing

  572. pursuit of God.

  573. It means to follow

  574. the pattern of Christ.

  575. Sometimes people think

  576. that they have come

  577. to Jesus

  578. and that that's the end

  579. of their Christian story.

  580. They believed,

  581. they've been baptized,

  582. but then they become

  583. complacent

  584. and stagnant.

  585. But that's not

  586. how Christian

  587. discipleship works.

  588. We come to him

  589. in order to go

  590. after him.

  591. There's a journey,

  592. a movement,

  593. growth

  594. that's supposed

  595. to happen

  596. year after year.

  597. Hannah and I

  598. keep several plants

  599. in our house

  600. and after having

  601. had several plants

  602. die under my

  603. expert care,

  604. I now can guess

  605. fairly accurately

  606. when plants

  607. are about to die.

  608. Because a plant

  609. usually stops

  610. growing

  611. before it dies.

  612. I know that doesn't

  613. sound revolutionary

  614. at all.

  615. It was to me.

  616. It still looks alive

  617. for a little while.

  618. It looks alive

  619. for a while,

  620. but if it's not

  621. growing at all,

  622. that's a warning sign

  623. to me.

  624. Okay,

  625. that thing is going

  626. to die.

  627. Because a plant

  628. that's not growing

  629. is dying.

  630. In contrast,

  631. I can know that

  632. a plant is alive

  633. because it's growing.

  634. It grows

  635. imperceptibly.

  636. I don't see,

  637. I've never,

  638. you know,

  639. I've never caught it

  640. in the app.

  641. I never see the plant

  642. growing.

  643. You know,

  644. but then I see it

  645. one day,

  646. I'm like,

  647. okay,

  648. there's a leaf,

  649. new leaf that's

  650. just unfurled.

  651. Oh,

  652. here's a new shoot

  653. that I had never

  654. noticed before.

  655. It grows imperceptibly,

  656. but undeniably,

  657. every plant that is alive

  658. grows.

  659. grows.

  660. The Christian life

  661. is much the same way.

  662. Those who come to

  663. Jesus in earnest

  664. continue to go

  665. after Him.

  666. And they become

  667. more like Him

  668. because they are

  669. pursuing Him

  670. and following in

  671. His footsteps.

  672. Their words and

  673. actions reflect

  674. Jesus more

  675. and more.

  676. They might not

  677. see themselves

  678. growing.

  679. They might not

  680. catch their growth

  681. in the act.

  682. But as they look

  683. back,

  684. months ago,

  685. years ago,

  686. they notice

  687. that they have

  688. grown.

  689. So unless we

  690. love Jesus

  691. more than we

  692. love our family,

  693. we cannot be

  694. His disciple.

  695. Unless we love

  696. Jesus more than

  697. we love even

  698. ourselves,

  699. we cannot be

  700. His disciple.

  701. There's one more

  702. concrete requirement

  703. that Jesus lays

  704. down for us

  705. in this passage,

  706. and it comes

  707. toward the end

  708. in verse 33

  709. as kind of a

  710. summary statement.

  711. It says,

  712. So therefore,

  713. any one of you

  714. who does not

  715. renounce all

  716. that he has

  717. cannot be

  718. my disciple.

  719. Notice the

  720. parallel structure.

  721. This too is a

  722. requirement for

  723. Christian discipleship.

  724. Unless we

  725. renounce all

  726. that we have,

  727. we cannot be

  728. Christ's disciple.

  729. Not just our

  730. family,

  731. not just ourselves,

  732. but also our

  733. possessions.

  734. everything that

  735. we have,

  736. everything that

  737. belongs to us.

  738. If we're

  739. preoccupied with

  740. accumulating wealth,

  741. if we love

  742. saving and or

  743. spending money

  744. more than we

  745. love Christ

  746. and serving Him,

  747. if we are more

  748. about maximizing

  749. our earning

  750. potential than

  751. following Jesus

  752. Christ,

  753. then we are

  754. not Christ's

  755. disciples.

  756. We cannot be.

  757. remember from

  758. earlier in Luke

  759. 14,

  760. 18 to 20,

  761. that the primary

  762. excuses that

  763. people gave for

  764. not following Jesus

  765. and entering into

  766. the kingdom of God,

  767. the banquet of God,

  768. were one's

  769. possessions,

  770. one's vocation,

  771. and one's

  772. family.

  773. It is no wonder

  774. then that here

  775. Jesus puts this

  776. requirement so

  777. starkly.

  778. Halfway

  779. discipleship is

  780. not merely

  781. sub-ideal,

  782. it's

  783. impossible.

  784. we must

  785. renounce all

  786. other allegiances,

  787. including our

  788. family,

  789. ourselves,

  790. and our own

  791. possessions,

  792. to follow

  793. Christ.

  794. And having

  795. spoken of the

  796. impossibility of

  797. halfway discipleship,

  798. he now comments

  799. on the foolishness

  800. of halfway

  801. discipleship in

  802. verses 28 to

  803. 33,

  804. using two

  805. illustrations.

  806. Our first

  807. illustration is in

  808. verses 28 to

  809. 30,

  810. please read with

  811. me.

  812. It says,

  813. for which of

  814. you,

  815. desiring to

  816. build a

  817. tower,

  818. does not

  819. first sit

  820. down and

  821. count the

  822. cost,

  823. whether he

  824. has enough

  825. to complete

  826. it.

  827. Otherwise,

  828. when he has

  829. laid a

  830. foundation and

  831. is not able

  832. to finish,

  833. all who see

  834. it begin to

  835. mock him,

  836. saying,

  837. this man

  838. began to

  839. build and

  840. was not

  841. able to

  842. finish.

  843. The word

  844. tower here

  845. likely,

  846. most likely

  847. refers to a

  848. watchtower that

  849. people in the

  850. ancient world

  851. built over

  852. their vineyards

  853. or over their

  854. houses.

  855. It's a

  856. protective

  857. measure so

  858. you can

  859. stand guard

  860. at the

  861. watchtower and

  862. see from

  863. afar when

  864. people are

  865. coming.

  866. It was not

  867. a small

  868. financial

  869. undertaking.

  870. It speaks

  871. of foundations.

  872. It has a

  873. foundation.

  874. It's a

  875. massive

  876. structure.

  877. Maybe it's

  878. similar nowadays

  879. in modern

  880. days like

  881. a home

  882. addition that

  883. you pay

  884. for.

  885. It's a

  886. major cost.

  887. The average

  888. cost of

  889. adding a

  890. room nowadays,

  891. they say

  892. that it

  893. costs $44,000.

  894. So it's

  895. not a

  896. small sum

  897. of money

  898. that this

  899. person is

  900. speaking of.

  901. And it's

  902. not money

  903. that you

  904. just happen

  905. to have

  906. lying around

  907. inside a

  908. piggy bank

  909. somewhere.

  910. And sometimes

  911. I walk into

  912. a grocery

  913. store without

  914. checking how

  915. much money

  916. I have in

  917. my wallet

  918. because I'm

  919. just buying a

  920. few small

  921. things and I

  922. assume that I

  923. have enough

  924. money in my

  925. wallet.

  926. But imagine

  927. if you were

  928. trying to add

  929. room to your

  930. house.

  931. house.

  932. That's not

  933. something that

  934. you just

  935. kind of

  936. casually stumble

  937. into and

  938. think,

  939. okay, I

  940. think I'll

  941. add a

  942. house, you

  943. know, add

  944. a room to

  945. my house

  946. today.

  947. No, you

  948. have to

  949. check your

  950. bank account.

  951. You have to

  952. check to

  953. make sure that

  954. you have

  955. enough money

  956. to complete

  957. the project

  958. that you're

  959. about to

  960. start.

  961. Sitting down

  962. and counting

  963. the cost,

  964. whether I have

  965. enough to

  966. complete it.

  967. A half-built

  968. bathroom that

  969. has a toilet

  970. and a faucet

  971. but no water

  972. pipes is

  973. useless.

  974. So he

  975. says,

  976. when he

  977. has laid

  978. a foundation

  979. and is

  980. not able

  981. to finish,

  982. all who

  983. see it

  984. begin to

  985. mock him

  986. saying,

  987. this man

  988. began to

  989. build and

  990. was not

  991. able to

  992. finish.

  993. It's

  994. foolish to

  995. undertake

  996. something so

  997. consequential,

  998. so big,

  999. so costly

  1000. without first

  1001. estimating the

  1002. expenses.

  1003. There's a

  1004. skyscraper in

  1005. Pyongyang,

  1006. North Korea.

  1007. It's called

  1008. Ryugyeong Hotel.

  1009. It's the

  1010. tallest

  1011. skyscraper in

  1012. North Korea,

  1013. 1,080 feet,

  1014. 105 floors,

  1015. but it

  1016. remains to

  1017. this day

  1018. unfinished.

  1019. Construction

  1020. for it

  1021. began in

  1022. 1987,

  1023. but problems

  1024. with building

  1025. materials as

  1026. well as a

  1027. prolonged

  1028. economic crisis

  1029. have prevented

  1030. its completion

  1031. to this day.

  1032. So according

  1033. to the

  1034. Guinness World

  1035. Records,

  1036. Ryugyeong Hotel

  1037. holds the

  1038. dubious

  1039. distinction of

  1040. being the

  1041. tallest

  1042. unoccupied

  1043. building in

  1044. the world.

  1045. It's

  1046. embarrassing.

  1047. The

  1048. skyscraper that

  1049. was supposed

  1050. to be a

  1051. monument to

  1052. North Korean

  1053. technological

  1054. advancement at

  1055. the 13th World

  1056. Festival of

  1057. Youth and

  1058. Students in

  1059. 1989,

  1060. instead now

  1061. stands to

  1062. this day in

  1063. 2019 as

  1064. the monument

  1065. to their

  1066. poor planning.

  1067. men.

  1068. This is the

  1069. foolishness of

  1070. halfway

  1071. discipleship.

  1072. If you

  1073. wear the

  1074. name of

  1075. Christ and

  1076. call yourself

  1077. a Christian,

  1078. but you

  1079. live in

  1080. contrast to

  1081. his teachings,

  1082. it's

  1083. embarrassing

  1084. to Christ.

  1085. Christ.

  1086. If you

  1087. say that

  1088. Christ is

  1089. your Lord,

  1090. but you're

  1091. not willing

  1092. to do what

  1093. he commands,

  1094. then it's

  1095. pointless.

  1096. If you

  1097. don't

  1098. persevere in

  1099. your faith

  1100. and obedience

  1101. to the end

  1102. of your

  1103. life,

  1104. and you

  1105. fall away

  1106. from Christ,

  1107. it's futile.

  1108. It's like

  1109. having an

  1110. unfinished

  1111. tower.

  1112. The second

  1113. illustration,

  1114. verses 31

  1115. to 32,

  1116. makes the

  1117. similar point.

  1118. It says,

  1119. Or what

  1120. king,

  1121. going out to

  1122. encounter another

  1123. king in war,

  1124. will not sit

  1125. down first and

  1126. deliberate whether

  1127. he is able with

  1128. 10,000 to meet

  1129. him who comes

  1130. against him with

  1131. 20,000?

  1132. And if not,

  1133. while the other

  1134. is yet a great

  1135. way off,

  1136. he sends a

  1137. delegation that

  1138. asks for

  1139. terms of

  1140. peace.

  1141. Just think

  1142. about how

  1143. foolish that

  1144. is.

  1145. This king

  1146. and his

  1147. kingdom is

  1148. under attack

  1149. and he

  1150. only has

  1151. half the

  1152. number of

  1153. soldiers as

  1154. the invading

  1155. king.

  1156. But imagine

  1157. that in spite

  1158. of that clear

  1159. numerical

  1160. disadvantage,

  1161. this king

  1162. without counsel

  1163. lunges headlong

  1164. into battle

  1165. without strategizing

  1166. with his generals

  1167. about how to

  1168. overcome this

  1169. deficit.

  1170. He's going

  1171. to get

  1172. destroyed.

  1173. war is

  1174. not a

  1175. video game

  1176. that you

  1177. can start

  1178. over

  1179. anytime you

  1180. want.

  1181. Foolishly

  1182. going to

  1183. war without

  1184. adequate

  1185. preparation

  1186. will have

  1187. devastating

  1188. consequences

  1189. and so

  1190. any king

  1191. with any

  1192. common sense

  1193. will carefully

  1194. assess the

  1195. dire situation

  1196. and determine

  1197. whether he

  1198. has enough

  1199. to go to

  1200. war.

  1201. And if

  1202. not,

  1203. he will

  1204. send for

  1205. a delegation

  1206. to ask for

  1207. terms of

  1208. peace.

  1209. Likewise,

  1210. following Christ

  1211. is not

  1212. a stroll

  1213. in the

  1214. park.

  1215. It's not

  1216. a video

  1217. game.

  1218. It's not

  1219. a casual

  1220. undertaking.

  1221. It requires,

  1222. it determines

  1223. one's eternal

  1224. fate.

  1225. It raises

  1226. the stakes,

  1227. asks questions

  1228. of life

  1229. and death

  1230. and it may

  1231. come with

  1232. suffering

  1233. and persecution.

  1234. It may

  1235. come,

  1236. it will

  1237. come at

  1238. great personal

  1239. cost to

  1240. yourself

  1241. and to

  1242. your own

  1243. life and

  1244. for these

  1245. reasons it

  1246. requires

  1247. serious

  1248. consideration.

  1249. Have you

  1250. considered

  1251. becoming a

  1252. follower of

  1253. Christ?

  1254. Do you

  1255. know what

  1256. Christ

  1257. demands of

  1258. you?

  1259. Do you

  1260. know what

  1261. the Christian

  1262. life entails?

  1263. If you're

  1264. not yet a

  1265. follower of

  1266. Christ,

  1267. I urge you

  1268. this morning

  1269. to answer

  1270. these questions

  1271. for yourself,

  1272. to consider,

  1273. to deliberate

  1274. seriously.

  1275. the Christian

  1276. life is

  1277. not for

  1278. the faint

  1279. hearted,

  1280. it's not

  1281. for casual

  1282. observers

  1283. and lukewarm

  1284. fans.

  1285. In order

  1286. to be a

  1287. disciple of

  1288. Christ,

  1289. we must

  1290. renounce

  1291. all other

  1292. allegiances

  1293. because

  1294. Christ the

  1295. King will

  1296. have no

  1297. life.

  1298. You can

  1299. only pledge

  1300. allegiance to

  1301. one King.

  1302. Think about

  1303. it this way,

  1304. at a U.S.

  1305. naturalization

  1306. ceremony,

  1307. which I

  1308. got to

  1309. attend at

  1310. Red Sox

  1311. for my

  1312. naturalization

  1313. ceremony,

  1314. it was

  1315. really cool,

  1316. but that's

  1317. irrelevant,

  1318. sorry.

  1319. One of the

  1320. things that

  1321. you have to

  1322. say in

  1323. your vow

  1324. of allegiance

  1325. is this,

  1326. it begins

  1327. like this,

  1328. I hereby

  1329. declare on

  1330. oath that

  1331. I absolutely

  1332. and entirely

  1333. renounce and

  1334. abjure all

  1335. allegiance and

  1336. fidelity to any

  1337. foreign prince

  1338. potented

  1339. state or

  1340. sovereignty of

  1341. whom or

  1342. which I

  1343. have heretofore

  1344. been a

  1345. subject or

  1346. citizen.

  1347. I don't

  1348. think people

  1349. actually think

  1350. about it when

  1351. they recite

  1352. that oath.

  1353. That's a

  1354. serious

  1355. commitment.

  1356. It's

  1357. exclusive.

  1358. You're

  1359. renouncing all

  1360. your other

  1361. previous

  1362. allegiances.

  1363. Why?

  1364. Because you

  1365. cannot be a

  1366. U.S.

  1367. citizen while

  1368. pledging

  1369. allegiance to a

  1370. foreign country.

  1371. in order to

  1372. enjoy the

  1373. privileges of

  1374. citizenship in

  1375. this country,

  1376. you must

  1377. renounce your

  1378. obligations to

  1379. other nations.

  1380. In order to

  1381. enjoy the

  1382. protection provided

  1383. by this

  1384. country,

  1385. you need to

  1386. pledge to not

  1387. support another

  1388. country,

  1389. which is

  1390. undermining your

  1391. very own

  1392. protection,

  1393. which comes from

  1394. this country.

  1395. That's the

  1396. nature of

  1397. relationships,

  1398. nature of

  1399. citizenship,

  1400. and these

  1401. allegiances.

  1402. becoming

  1403. likewise a

  1404. citizen of

  1405. the kingdom

  1406. of God

  1407. requires the

  1408. renunciation of

  1409. our citizenship in

  1410. the kingdom of

  1411. this world.

  1412. You cannot serve

  1413. two masters.

  1414. others.

  1415. So it's foolish to

  1416. try to do

  1417. otherwise.

  1418. That's the

  1419. foolishness of

  1420. halfway

  1421. discipleship.

  1422. And the

  1423. last point

  1424. Jesus makes

  1425. is of the

  1426. uselessness of

  1427. halfway

  1428. discipleship in

  1429. verses 34

  1430. to 35.

  1431. He says,

  1432. salt is good,

  1433. but if salt has

  1434. lost its taste,

  1435. how shall its

  1436. saltiness be

  1437. restored?

  1438. It is of no

  1439. use,

  1440. either for the

  1441. soil or for

  1442. the manure pile.

  1443. It is thrown

  1444. away.

  1445. He who has ears

  1446. to hear,

  1447. let him hear.

  1448. Salt is good,

  1449. it says.

  1450. What does it

  1451. mean for salt

  1452. to be good?

  1453. Luke uses the

  1454. word good earlier

  1455. in his gospel to

  1456. tell us that we

  1457. are to be like

  1458. good trees planted

  1459. on good soil in

  1460. order to bear good

  1461. fruit.

  1462. So good is a

  1463. word that he

  1464. specifically uses to

  1465. refer to

  1466. the right

  1467. Christian

  1468. discipleship.

  1469. A true

  1470. Christian that

  1471. bears fruit,

  1472. that is responsive

  1473. to the word of

  1474. God, that grows

  1475. on good soil.

  1476. So saltiness is

  1477. the mark of the

  1478. Christian because

  1479. salt is good.

  1480. This is quite

  1481. appropriate metaphor

  1482. for the Christian

  1483. because of its

  1484. preserving properties,

  1485. you know,

  1486. disinfecting

  1487. properties,

  1488. especially in a

  1489. day when they

  1490. didn't have

  1491. refrigeration,

  1492. it was a sign,

  1493. really a symbol

  1494. of permanence.

  1495. A salt,

  1496. that's what

  1497. preserves food.

  1498. And it's

  1499. extremely important

  1500. and essential to

  1501. life for many of

  1502. these reasons,

  1503. but the primary

  1504. function that Luke

  1505. seems to have in

  1506. view is spelled

  1507. out in verse 35.

1508. It is of no use

  1509. either for the soil

  1510. or for the manure

  1511. pile.

  1512. What's in view here

  1513. is salt's function

  1514. as a fertilizer.

  1515. A little bit of

  1516. salt can activate

  1517. nutrients in the soil

  1518. for the plants

  1519. but control the

  1520. growth of weed.

  1521. It can also be

  1522. used to enrich

  1523. manure to make

  1524. it more effective

  1525. as a fertilizer.

  1526. However, he says,

  1527. if salt has lost

  1528. its taste,

  1529. how shall its

  1530. saltiness be

  1531. restored?

  1532. And the Greek

  1533. word translated

  1534. here as lose

  1535. its taste

  1536. literally means

  1537. to become foolish.

  1538. He's saying salt

  1539. when it becomes

  1540. foolish, what

  1541. good is it

  1542. anymore?

  1543. What use does

  1544. it have anymore?

  1545. It's a metaphor

  1546. for Christian

  1547. discipleship.

  1548. The answer is,

  1549. of course, it

  1550. cannot be restored.

  1551. We have some

  1552. chemists in the

  1553. room, they might

  1554. object that salt

  1555. cannot lose its

  1556. saltiness by

  1557. definition because

  1558. when it does,

  1559. it would cease to

  1560. be salt.

  1561. And that's true

  1562. if I did my

  1563. Google research

  1564. correctly.

  1565. But that defeats

  1566. the point of the

  1567. metaphor.

  1568. In this part of

  1569. the ancient world,

  1570. salt was likely

  1571. derived from the

  1572. Dead Sea by

  1573. evaporation.

  1574. And so the residue

  1575. would have contained

  1576. salt, real salt,

1577. but it will also be

  1578. mixed with other

  1579. minerals that are

  1580. not salty.

  1581. And that can be

  1582. mistaken for salt.

  1583. So often people

  1584. saw this as salt

  1585. losing its saltiness.

  1586. And this was a

  1587. common problem in

  1588. the ancient world.

  1589. And salt that is

  1590. mixed with these

  1591. other minerals that

  1592. are not salt would

  1593. be useless for

  1594. preserving and

  1595. purifying, flavoring,

  1596. and even as in

  1597. view here,

  1598. fertilizing.

  1599. Similarly, a

  1600. Christian that

  1601. loses his

  1602. Christ-likeness,

  1603. a halfway disciple,

  1604. the so-called

  1605. Christian that

  1606. becomes foolish,

  1607. loses his

  1608. usefulness.

  1609. He's useless for

  1610. preserving what is

  1611. good and right in

  1612. this world.

  1613. He's useless for

  1614. halting the moral

  1615. decay of society.

  1616. He's useless for

  1617. purifying the sinful

  1618. world and bringing

  1619. the light of Christ,

  1620. his healing, to this

  1621. world.

  1622. He's useless for

  1623. flavoring this world

  1624. with the goodness of

  1625. God.

  1626. But beside all of

  1627. those things, a

  1628. halfway disciple is

  1629. useless for the

  1630. primary purpose that

1631. Luke has in view of

  1632. fertilizing.

  1633. A true salty

  1634. Christian fertilizes

  1635. the soil so that

  1636. people's hearts are

  1637. fertile so that they

1638. respond to the seed of

  1639. the gospel and produce

  1640. good fruit that

  1641. pleases God.

  1642. A true disciple is a

1643. good tree that sits on

  1644. good soil and bears

1645. good fruit, but to lose

1646. our saltiness is to lose

  1647. our Christian identity, to

  1648. have no good.

  1649. That's the uselessness of

  1650. halfway discipleship.

  1651. And here's the reason

  1652. why Christian

1653. discipleship is so all or

  1654. nothing.

1655. We can think about it in

  1656. relational terms.

1657. The level of intimacy that

  1658. you enjoy in a

  1659. relationship is directly

  1660. proportionate to the level

1661. of priority you accord to

  1662. that relationship.

1663. Can you imagine a man

  1664. proposing to a woman

  1665. this way?

1666. Would you like to marry

  1667. me and become the

  1668. second most important

  1669. woman in my life?

1670. I will love you very

  1671. much.

  1672. I'll love my mom a

  1673. little more, but I

1674. will love you very much.

1675. Or can you imagine a

  1676. man saying, hey, I'm

  1677. going to love you.

1678. You're going to be the

  1679. second best woman.

1680. I love my sister more.

1681. But I'll also love you.

  1682. You'll always be second

  1683. in my heart.

1684. Who would say yes to

  1685. such a lousy proposal?

  1686. The depth of commitment

  1687. and intimacy involved in

  1688. marriage demands primacy

  1689. and priority.

1690. It's not enough to love

  1691. your spouse second best.

  1692. She must be first.

  1693. Among all your human

  1694. relationships.

1695. In the same way, God

1696. has loved us with a

  1697. consuming, jealous love.

  1698. love.

1699. We have sinned and rebelled

  1700. against him.

  1701. We have been unfaithful

  1702. to him.

1703. And as a result of that,

  1704. we have been unlovable,

  1705. unworthy.

1706. And yet God the Father

  1707. sent his only son,

1708. Jesus, to die for our

  1709. sins on the cross,

  1710. to woo us.

  1711. Jesus' life, death, and

  1712. resurrection is the

  1713. divine proposal.

  1714. follow me.

  1715. Follow me.

1716. Be the bride of Christ.

1717. That's how the church is

  1718. described in God's word.

1719. And because of what Christ

1720. has done, because he bore his

1721. cross for us, he cannot demand

1722. that we bear our cross to follow

  1723. him.

1724. Because that's the kind of

  1725. relationship that he has

  1726. offered to us.

1727. That's the kind of commitment

1728. and cost he was willing to

  1729. pay for us.

1730. And so now he says,

1731. the only way you can have

  1732. this kind of relationship

1733. with me is you must make me

  1734. first in your heart,

  1735. in your life.

  1736. That's the privilege.

1737. But the privilege comes with

  1738. the cost.

  1739. Thank you.

  1740. Thank you.

  1741. Thank you.
