  1. Psalm 119 verses 41 to 48 today.

    Psalms 119:41–48

  2. I'll read it out loud for us.

  3. It says,

  4. And take not the word of truth utterly out of my mouth, for my hope is in your rules.

  5. I will keep your law continually forever and ever, and I shall walk in a white place, for I have sought your precepts.

  6. I will also speak of your testimonies before kings, and shall not be put to shame, for I find my delight in your commandments, which I love.

  7. I will lift up my hands toward your commandments, which I love.

  8. And I will meditate on your statutes.

  9. So this strophe or stanza, this unit of poetry kind of begins with prayer for deliverance.

  10. Really, this whole section is about how those who delight in God's rules, God's law, those who trust in God's word, bear faithful witness to it.

  11. And the first part, the first three verses, verse 41 to 43, is a prayer.

  12. It's a prayer of a faithful witness.

  13. And then verses 44 to 48 is a pledge of a faithful witness.

  14. And so it begins with the prayer in verse 41.

  15. Let your steadfast love come to me, O Lord, your salvation according to your promise.

  16. And it seems that he's in a situation, kind of a bad situation that he needs God to save him from.

  17. And it seems that there's some enemies that are taunting him.

  18. So they're taunting him, saying, where is your God?

  19. God, if your God is all that you say he is, then why are all these things happening to you?

  20. And where is the God that you put so much hope in?

  21. But the psalmist hasn't abandoned his hope.

  22. He has held on.

  23. And so he asks God for deliverance.

  24. Lord, let your steadfast love, your unchanging love come to me.

  25. Your salvation according to the promises you have given me.

  26. And only then shall I have an answer for these people who are taunting me.

  27. So that's what he's holding on.

  28. This is a great picture of faith seeking understanding.

  29. I don't know if that's a phrase you guys have heard.

  30. Often when people, bad things happen to Christians,

  31. sometimes they get doubt which leads them to despair.

  32. This is happening to me.

  33. I don't know if God's really with me.

  34. I don't know if God really loves me.

  35. I don't know if God really is in control.

  36. It's a doubt that leads to despair.

  37. In contrast, faith seeking understanding says,

  38. you know, my experience is contrary to God's promise.

  39. What I know about God.

  40. But instead of saying, therefore God must not love me or God must not exist,

  41. faith seeking understanding says,

  42. this is what I believe and Lord, please help me to understand.

  43. I know this might.

  44. So instead of letting our experience dictate our faith,

  45. this person,

  46. this psalmist is letting his faith dictate his experience,

  47. make sense of what he's going through.

  48. Lord, I believe.

  49. Lord, I believe.

  50. But help me.

  51. Deliver me.

  52. Show me.

  53. That prove to me that your word is true,

  54. which, because I believe it, I hold on to it.

  55. And so he says,

  56. then he will be able to answer those who taunt him.

  57. And he will not take,

  58. and he prays, continues that prayer in verse 43.

  59. Take not the word of truth utterly out of my mouth,

  60. for my hope is in your rules.

  61. He's still hoping in God's word.

  62. And so he doesn't want God to take away his testimony.

  63. He wants him to preserve him,

  64. so that he can continue to bear witness to God's truth.

  65. And that's the prayer of a faithful witness.

  66. And then in the latter half of the psalm,

  67. we see the pledge,

  68. pledge of a faithful witness.

  69. It says in verse 44 and 45,

  70. I will keep your law continually forever and ever,

  71. and I shall walk in a wide place,

  72. for I have sought your precepts.

  73. So the word continually suggests without pause,

  74. without ceasing.

  75. And then forever and ever suggests without an end,

  76. without a terminus.

  77. So he's saying without ceasing,

  78. without pause and without end,

  79. I will continue to keep your law.

  80. I will keep your law.

  81. And so it shows to us

  82. what life of obedience should look like.

  83. Obedience is not just a part-time commitment,

  84. but rather it's an entire life,

  85. without break,

  86. lived toward the glory of God.

  87. And I love the following image in verse 45.

  88. And I shall, when he's doing this,

  89. I shall walk in a wide place,

  90. for I have sought your precepts.

  91. I love that image because,

  92. like sometimes when,

  93. as Christians,

  94. we think about the word precepts,

  95. God's law,

  96. God's rule,

  97. we can think of it as a restrictive thing,

  98. you know,

  99. a narrow thing.

  100. It's restrictive.

  101. It's something that limits us, right?

  102. Constrains us.

  103. But the psalmist describes it as,

  104. when he seeks the precepts of God,

  105. he says,

  106. I shall walk in a wide place.

  107. This is the spaciousness of obedience.

  108. There's a sense of spaciousness,

  109. of freedom,

  110. liberty that comes with obedience.

  111. It's in the same way,

  112. you know,

  113. it's only the musician that disciplines him or herself

  114. to do these tedious finger-strengthening exercises,

  115. or scales,

  116. that can later play these difficult,

  117. you know,

  118. exquisite pieces of music,

  119. with freedom and joy,

  120. right?

  121. It's that,

  122. it's that,

  123. and in the same way,

  124. it's the,

  125. I mean,

  126. if you think of a writer,

  127. right,

  128. an author,

  129. it's,

  130. it's those who have disciplined themselves

  131. with learning the conventions of grammar

  132. and diction,

  133. and,

  134. and,

  135. and really these literary principles

  136. that can later really experiment

  137. and write freely and,

  138. and joyfully,

  139. and,

  140. and with flourish.

  141. And so it's the discipline,

  142. and that reminds me of the,

  143. of a quote that I've used before

  144. from G.K. Chesterton

  145. in his book,

  146. Orthodoxy.

  147. He comments on this paradoxical aspect

  148. of God's law.

  149. He says,

  150. the more I considered Christianity,

  151. the more I found that while it had established

  152. a rule and order,

  153. the chief aim of that order

  154. was to give room for good things

  155. to run wild.

  156. It's the,

  157. the,

  158. the freedom to obey.

  159. It,

  160. it gives us protection,

  161. boundaries,

  162. in order,

  163. in which we can run wild.

  164. There's a spaciousness.

  165. God makes it wide.

  166. I shall walk in a wide place,

  167. for I have sought your precepts.

  168. And,

  169. and then he,

  170. and he continues his pledge

  171. in verse 46,

  172. I will also speak of your testimonies

  173. before kings

  174. and shall not be put to shame.

  175. And that's,

  176. and it's,

  177. there's an emphasis on giving testimony

  178. earlier in verse,

  179. right,

  180. 42 and 43.

  181. He spoke of bearing witness,

  182. giving testimony to his enemies

  183. who taunt him.

  184. And now here,

  185. he's saying,

  186. even before kings,

  187. he will bear testimony,

  188. he will bear witness to God's word

  189. and he will not be ashamed.

  190. And,

  191. and this is,

  192. it's a good question to ask,

  193. do we have this kind of confidence

  194. as a psalmist

  195. that we will not be put to shame

  196. when we share,

  197. bear witness to God's word.

  198. That even

  199. when we're before

  200. the wisest of people in the world,

  201. do we have faith

  202. that God's word

  203. will prove still wiser?

  204. Even before the best philosophers

  205. of this age,

  206. do we have confidence

  207. that God's word

  208. will prove truer?

  209. Right?

  210. And,

  211. and even,

  212. even among the,

  213. you know,

  214. the most noble

  215. or moral people in the world,

  216. do we have confidence

  217. that God's word

  218. will be still more noble

  219. and more,

  220. more beautiful

  221. and moral

  222. and better

  223. in every way.

  224. And,

  225. and,

  226. and the psalmist

  227. has that confidence

  228. where he says,

  229. even before kings,

  230. I know I will not be ashamed

  231. and he puts,

  232. he,

  233. he bears witness

  234. to God's word

  235. and he pledges

  236. to continue to do that.

  237. And the reason

  238. is amazing.

  239. Verse 47,

  240. for I find my delight

  241. in your commandments

  242. which I love.

  243. I will lift up my hands

  244. toward your commandments

  245. which I love

  246. and I will meditate

  247. on your statutes.

  248. The phrase lifting up my hands,

  249. it's,

  250. it's usually,

  251. it's a kind of a gesture

  252. of prayer

  253. and when it's used

  254. in scripture,

  255. it's usually referring

  256. to God.

  257. I lift up my hands to God.

  258. It's a way of stretching

  259. your hands out to God.

  260. But here,

  261. interestingly,

  262. that it,

  263. that's,

  264. that the state of God,

  265. it says,

  266. I will lift up my hands

  267. toward your commandments.

  268. commandments.

  269. So,

  270. because the commandments

  271. of God

  272. speak of God,

  273. reveal God,

  274. stand for God.

  275. And,

  276. and here,

  277. and,

  278. and,

  279. and,

  280. and it's hard to miss

  281. kind of the relational

  282. and almost even romantic,

  283. right,

  284. overtones,

  285. right,

  286. which I love,

  287. right?

  288. it's,

  289. it reminds me of the word,

  290. the English word we have,

  291. like a bibliophile,

  292. right?

  293. Someone who loves books,

  294. right?

  295. Lovers of books.

  296. And,

  297. and there's a,

  298. there's a sense which,

  299. right?

  300. I mean,

  301. Kim's,

  302. Kim's one of them,

  303. right?

  304. Yeah,

  305. yeah.

  306. And,

  307. there's a sense in which

  308. you can really fall in love

  309. with the book,

  310. right?

  311. Like,

  312. I mean,

  313. it's,

  314. it engages,

  315. unlike,

  316. I don't know,

  317. TV shows or movies

  318. that imagine things for you.

  319. When you read a book,

  320. you have to use your own imagination.

  321. It engages you in a different way.

  322. You kind of really get immersed

  323. in the world

  324. and you get really,

  325. you can get really enamored

  326. with the characters

  327. and so there's a sense

  328. which you can really fall in love

  329. with a book

  330. and you feel like it's a relationship.

  331. You get to know someone.

  332. But,

  333. this is true in a much profound,

  334. much more profound way

  335. with scripture

  336. because God presently

  337. speaks

  338. from his word.

  339. It's a way in which

  340. we relate to God,

  341. hear from him

  342. and we could even pray

  343. back scripture to him.

  344. and,

  345. and so,

  346. and so,

  347. it's not inappropriate

  348. for the psalmist to say,

  349. I love God's commandments.

  350. I delight in God's commandments.

  351. I love him

  352. and,

  353. and that's the love

  354. that we should cultivate

  355. and it's those who love God's word

  356. that bear faithful witness to it.

  357. and,

  358. and this is,

  359. it's,

  360. and that's why

  361. because he loves it,

  362. it says,

  363. he,

  364. he,

  365. and he was going to bear

  366. a faithful witness to it

  367. and we know that in the end

  368. his faith

  369. and his hope

  370. will not be disappointed

  371. because God always delivers

  372. on his promises

  373. and his deliverance

  374. ultimately

  375. is seen in,

  376. he's seen the fulfillment

  377. of God's promises

  378. in Jesus Christ.

  379. Jesus is the,

  380. is the,

  381. is what the promise,

  382. all the promises

  383. of the Old Testament

  384. point to

  385. and in his life,

  386. death and resurrection,

  387. he,

  388. he brings the salvation

  389. that is promised

  390. and,

  391. and by,

  392. and delivering us

  393. from our sins,

  394. dying for our sins,

  395. being raised from the dead

  396. to give us new eternal

  397. resurrection life

  398. and,

  399. and now,

  400. and as people

  401. who are on that other side

  402. of,

  403. of,

  404. of,

  405. the salvation history,

  406. as people who have

  407. experienced this,

  408. have seen the fulfillment

  409. of God's promises

  410. which this psalmist

  411. was only holding out

  412. for and hoping in,

  413. we all the more

  414. should love God's word

  415. and bear witness to it.

  416. That's really the main point

  417. of this psalm.
