  1. Today we are in chapter 17, verses 20 to 37.

  2. I encourage you to open your Bibles to Luke chapter 17, verses 20 to 37.

    Luke 17:20–37

  3. We did print it for you today in the worship guide.

  4. We usually do not do that because we want people to bring their Bibles

  5. so that they can see the context of the passages that they read.

  6. But if you don't have a Bible today, you can use the worship guide that we printed for you.

  7. Before I read and preach, let me pray for God's help.

  8. Heavenly Father, we gather once again around your Word

  9. because we believe that you speak today through your Word.

  10. Because we believe that you rule us through your Word.

  11. Because we believe that in your Word we find life and joy and peace.

  12. Because through it we come to saving knowledge of Jesus Christ.

  13. So we ask once again that you will address us from your Word.

  14. So that instead of being distracted by the currents of this world,

  15. that we might be able to maintain our focus and perseverance

  16. as we follow after your Son, Jesus Christ.

  17. So that we might live with awareness of and anticipation of

  18. the Kingdom of God that will be fulfilled

  19. as you promised.

  20. So now help us as we incline our ears to hear.

  21. In Jesus' name we pray. Amen.

  22. Luke 17, verses 20 to 37.

    Luke 17:20–37

  23. Being asked by the Pharisees when the Kingdom of God would come,

  24. He answered them,

  25. The Kingdom of God is not coming in ways that can be observed,

  26. nor will they say,

  27. Look, here it is, or there.

  28. For behold, the Kingdom of God is in the midst of you.

  29. And He said to the disciples,

  30. The days are coming when you will desire to see

  31. one of the days of the Son of Man,

  32. and you will not see it.

  33. And they will say to you,

  34. Look there, or look here.

  35. Do not go out or follow them.

  36. For as the lightning flashes and lights up the sky

  37. from one side to the other,

  38. so will the Son of Man be in His day.

  39. But first, He must suffer many things

  40. and be rejected by this generation.

  41. Just as it was in the days of Noah,

  42. so will it be in the days of the Son of Man.

  43. They were eating and drinking and marrying

  44. and being given in marriage,

  45. until the day when Noah entered the ark

  46. and the flood came and destroyed them all.

  47. Likewise, just as it was in the days of Lot,

  48. they were eating and drinking,

  49. buying and selling, planting and building.

  50. But on the day when Lot went out from Sodom,

  51. fire and sulfur rained from heaven

  52. and destroyed them all.

  53. So will it be on the day

  54. when the Son of Man is revealed.

  55. On that day, let the one who is on the housetop

  56. with his goods in the house

  57. not come down to take them away.

  58. And likewise, let the one who is in the field

  59. not turn back.

  60. Remember Lot's wife.

  61. Whoever seeks to preserve his life will lose it,

  62. but whoever loses his life will keep it.

  63. I tell you, in that night,

  64. there will be two in one bed,

  65. one will be taken and the other left.

  66. There will be two women grinding together.

  67. One will be taken and the other left.

  68. And they said to him,

  69. Where, Lord?

  70. He said to them,

  71. Where the corpse is,

  72. there the vultures will gather.

  73. This is God's holy and authoritative word.

  74. According to a poll conducted in 2012

  75. for Reuters,

  76. it spanned 20 countries,

  77. it said that one in seven people,

  78. about 14% of the world's population,

  79. believe that the world will end in their lifetime

  80. for one reason or another.

  81. And according to the Wikipedia page

  82. that lists all the dates

  83. that have been predicted for apocalyptic events,

  84. there have been no less than 173

  85. end-of-the-world predictions

  86. that have already come and gone.

  87. And most recently,

  88. Ronald Wineland,

  89. a leader of a cult that splintered off

  90. from a Christian denomination,

  91. predicted that Jesus would return

  92. on June 9, 2019.

  93. It's two months ago.

  94. He had previously predicted

  95. the world would end in 2011,

  96. and 2012,

  97. and 2013 as well.

  98. Such attempts to predict

  99. the end of the world

  100. often becomes obsessive

  101. and unhealthy.

  102. And this was the case

  103. for ancient Jews as well.

  104. Many of them were preoccupied

  105. with reading astrological science

  106. to figure out

  107. when the end of the world would come.

  108. And they believed

  109. that the world,

  110. as they know,

  111. will come to an end

  112. when the Messiah comes,

  113. the Christ comes,

  114. to establish the kingdom of God.

  115. And so,

  116. it's not surprising then

  117. that after Jesus performs

  118. wondrous signs,

  119. such as healing lepers,

  120. and announcing the kingdom of God,

  121. that they asked Jesus

  122. this question

  123. at the beginning of our passage.

  124. When will the kingdom of God come?

  125. Verse 20.

  126. They're asking,

  127. if you claim that you are

  128. performing the signs of the kingdom,

  129. when will this kingdom

  130. of God's rule and authority

  131. actually come?

  132. And Jesus answered them this way

  133. in verses 20 to 21.

  134. The kingdom of God

  135. is not coming

  136. in ways that can be observed,

  137. nor will they say,

  138. look, here it is,

  139. or there,

  140. for behold,

  141. the kingdom of God

  142. is in the midst of you.

  143. There's no way,

  144. Jesus is saying,

  145. to observe

  146. the coming of the kingdom of God

  147. by studying the stars

  148. or the times.

  149. No one can say,

  150. look, here it is,

  151. or there it is,

  152. because the kingdom of God

  153. will not be tied

  154. to a specific,

  155. visible location

  156. like the kingdoms

  157. of this world.

  158. For behold,

  159. the kingdom of God

  160. is in the midst

  161. of you.

  162. And with this statement,

  163. Jesus is challenging

  164. the Pharisees'

  165. misunderstanding

  166. about the kingdom of God

  167. in two ways.

  168. First,

  169. they believe that

  170. the kingdom of God

  171. was still to come

  172. in the future

  173. and not yet here

  174. in any real sense.

  175. But Jesus is saying

  176. that the kingdom of God

  177. is already here.

  178. It has not been

  179. fully consummated yet,

  180. that does lie in the future,

  181. but it has already come

  182. in a real sense

  183. with Jesus.

  184. And so he says,

  185. it is in the midst of you.

  186. And second,

  187. the Pharisees believed

  188. that the kingdom of God

  189. will come with

  190. observable signs

  191. that we should look for,

  192. trying to set a timetable

  193. for Christ's return

  194. or for the kingdom of God.

  195. But Jesus tells us

  196. that there is no need

  197. to look around

  198. because the kingdom of God

  199. is in their very midst.

  200. Sometimes this phrase,

  201. in the midst of you,

  202. gets interpreted to mean

  203. that the kingdom of God

  204. is within us,

  205. in our hearts.

  206. And in the past,

  207. I have thought the same.

  208. But the more I think about it,

  209. I don't think that's what it means

  210. because Jesus is speaking here

  211. to the Pharisees

  212. who are the last people

  213. in the Gospels

  214. to whom Jesus will say,

  215. the kingdom of God

  216. is inside you.

  217. And secondly,

  218. Jesus is also,

  219. pointing out

  220. the fact that

  221. the kingdom of God

  222. is something that we enter in,

  223. something we,

  224. by submitting to

  225. the lordship of Christ,

  226. to the rule of God,

  227. it's something we enter into.

  228. The Gospels do not speak,

  229. usually,

  230. of the kingdom of God

  231. entering into us.

  232. He never speaks of it that way.

  233. And so Jesus is saying

  234. that the kingdom of God

  235. is God's rule,

  236. it's His domain,

  237. it's wherever Jesus reigns,

  238. and it's wherever Christ

  239. and His followers are,

  240. those who are the subjects

  241. of the king,

  242. the citizens of the kingdom of God.

  243. That's the kingdom.

  244. And Jesus is teaching the Pharisees

  245. the reality of that.

  246. And after He says that,

  247. Jesus then turns around

  248. to the very disciples

  249. who do belong

  250. to the kingdom of God.

  251. And then He says this,

  252. in verse 22,

  253. The days are coming

  254. when you will desire

  255. to see one of the days

  256. of the Son of Man

  257. and you will not see it.

  258. Even though the kingdom of God

  259. has already been started,

  260. inaugurated,

  261. Jesus speaks of a future day

  262. when it will be consummated,

  263. when the king will return

  264. in full glory

  265. and power and authority.

  266. There is this already here,

  267. but not yet fully here,

  268. aspect to the kingdom of God.

  269. A heavenly colony,

  270. so to speak,

  271. has been established

  272. here on earth.

  273. But the kingdom of God

  274. has not exerted its rule

  275. over the entirety

  276. of this world yet.

  277. And so Jesus says

  278. the days are coming.

  279. It's yet to come.

  280. When you will desire

  281. to see one of the days

  282. of the Son of Man

  283. and you will not see it.

  284. And the days are coming,

  285. it's referring to the future days.

  286. And one of the days

  287. is kind of an idiomatic way

  288. of saying first of the days.

  289. So these disciples,

  290. the days are coming

  291. when the followers of Christ

  292. will long to see the first

  293. of the fullness

  294. of the kingdom of God.

  295. The first day,

  296. the initial,

  297. the beginnings

  298. of the reign of Christ

  299. in full power.

  300. That's what they will long to see,

  301. but they will not see

  302. the Christ return that way.

  303. The phrase Son of Man

  304. is the most common way

  305. that Jesus refers to himself

  306. in the Gospels.

  307. And it's an allusion

  308. to Daniel chapter 7

    Daniel 7:13–14

  309. verses 13 to 14.

  310. Daniel said this,

  311. I saw in night visions

  312. and behold,

  313. with the clouds of heaven

  314. there came one

  315. like a Son of Man.

  316. And he came to the Ancient of Days,

  317. that's God,

  318. and was presented before him.

  319. And to him,

  320. the Son of Man,

  321. was given dominion

  322. and glory

  323. and a kingdom

  324. that all peoples,

  325. nations,

  326. and languages

  327. should serve him.

  328. His dominion

  329. is an everlasting dominion

  330. which shall not pass away.

  331. And his kingdom,

  332. one that shall not be destroyed.

  333. So this is the expectation

  334. that's behind

  335. this frenzy

  336. about the kingdom of God

  337. and the Son of Man.

  338. The Son of Man

  339. will come with

  340. the very authority

  341. of God himself

  342. to rule.

  343. But that time,

  344. Jesus says,

  345. lies in the future.

  346. It's not now.

  347. But this won't stop people

  348. from looking for him.

  349. It says in verse 23,

  350. and they will say to you,

  351. look there

  352. or look here.

  353. Do not go out

  354. or follow them.

  355. Jesus is warning us

  356. false rumors

  357. will circulate.

  358. Timetables

  359. will be proposed.

  360. But don't be deceived

  361. by them.

  362. Earlier in Luke

    Luke 9:23

  363. chapter 9,

  364. verse 23,

  365. he uses

  366. very similar verbs

  367. like this

  368. to describe

  369. following him,

  370. to describe

  371. Christian discipleship.

  372. He told them

  373. to come after him

  374. and to follow him.

  375. And Jesus

  376. is making a contrast here.

  377. In order to be

  378. faithful disciples

  379. who go after Christ

  380. and follow Christ,

  381. we cannot be disciples

  382. who go out

  383. after these rumors

  384. and timetables

  385. and follow these

  386. distractions

  387. because they really

  388. are distractions

  389. from true

  390. Christian discipleship.

  391. And Jesus

  392. gives us the reason

  393. why we should not

  394. be duped by these

  395. speculations

  396. in verse 24.

  397. For,

  398. as the lightning

  399. flashes

  400. and lights up the sky

  401. from one side

  402. to the other,

  403. so will the Son of Man

  404. be in his day.

  405. If a lightning

  406. were to strike

  407. right now,

  408. no one's going

  409. to look around

  410. and wonder to themselves,

  411. did a lightning

  412. just strike?

  413. Because we're all

  414. going to know

  415. that lightning

  416. just struck

  417. because it's obvious.

  418. It comes with

  419. the crack

  420. of deafening thunder.

  421. It lights up the sky

  422. from one end

  423. to the other.

  424. It's visible.

  425. It's obvious.

  426. It's plain to everybody.

  427. And the return

  428. of Christ,

  429. the coming of the Son of Man

  430. and his full authority

  431. will be the same.

  432. There will be

  433. nothing to mistake

  434. about it.

  435. So there's no need

  436. to speculate

  437. or go searching

  438. for him

  439. because as one

  440. Bible scholar

  441. Alfred Plummer

  442. sums it up,

  443. none will foresee it

  444. and all will see it

  445. at once.

  446. But there is something

  447. that must happen

  448. before the Son of Man

  449. returns in glory.

  450. Jesus says

  451. in verse 25,

  452. The Son of Man's return

  453. in all power,

  454. glory,

  455. and authority

  456. will first be preceded

  457. by his suffering

  458. and rejection

  459. at the hands of men.

  460. In Luke,

  461. as in the other

  462. Synoptic Gospels,

  463. Jesus repeatedly predicts

  464. that he will suffer

  465. and die.

  466. But this is the only place

  467. of all the Gospels

  468. where Jesus connects

  469. his suffering

  470. with his glorious return

  471. in the future.

  472. And that juxtaposition

  473. is jarring.

  474. That glorious Son of Man

  475. that Daniel 7 talks about,

  476. he will first suffer

  477. and be rejected.

  478. That Son of Man

  479. who will light up the sky

  480. and have all dominion

  481. over all kingdoms,

  482. over all peoples

  483. and nations,

  484. who will judge the world

  485. and bring justice,

  486. that Son of Man

  487. will first suffer

  488. and be rejected

  489. by this generation.

  490. Jesus' reign

  491. in glory and power

  492. comes through the path

  493. of humility

  494. and suffering

  495. and that's instructive

  496. for us as people

  497. who seek to follow him

  498. in his footsteps.

  499. Sometimes Christians

  500. who emphasize

  501. the end times

  502. have this triumphalist

  503. attitude.

  504. We will conquer

  505. the world for Christ.

  506. We will win this nation

  507. back through our activism.

  508. We will grow

  509. ever more influential

  510. and powerful

  511. and prepare the world

  512. for Christ's return.

  513. We have all heard

  514. these slogans

  515. or rallying cries.

  516. But Jesus teaches us here

  517. that the glory,

  518. authority,

  519. and power

  520. await only those

  521. who go through

  522. suffering

  523. and rejection

  524. and humility.

  525. Jesus says later

  526. to his disciples

  527. in Luke chapter 21,

    Luke 21 chapter mention

  528. people will lay their hands

  529. on you

  530. and persecute you,

  531. delivering you up

  532. to the synagogues

  533. and prisons

  534. and you will be brought

  535. before kings

  536. and governors

  537. for my name's sake.

  538. This will be your opportunity

  539. to bear witness.

  540. The church that is not

  541. prepared for suffering

  542. is a church

  543. that is sure to decline

  544. because God intends

  545. for us to bear witness

  546. to this world

  547. in the context

  548. of suffering

  549. and rejection.

  550. We should expect

  551. rejection

  552. when we share

  553. the gospel of Jesus Christ

  554. with people.

  555. We should expect

  556. various forms

  557. of suffering

  558. and persecution

  559. in this life.

  560. To follow Christ

  561. is to submit

  562. to his lordship

  563. and to give up

  564. our selfish desires.

  565. To follow Christ

  566. is to

  567. consider others

  568. better than ourselves,

  569. to look out

  570. for their interests

  571. not merely our own.

  572. To follow Christ

  573. is to stand firmly

  574. on his word

  575. in a world

  576. that rejects

  577. God's word.

  578. All of these things

  579. necessarily

  580. lead to suffering.

  581. So have you

  582. accepted this reality?

  583. Are you prepared

  584. to suffer for Christ?

  585. Nobody ever said

  586. that following Christ

  587. will be free

  588. of hardship.

  589. But is following

  590. Christ better?

  591. Is following

  592. Christ sweeter?

  593. Is following

  594. Christ to experience

  595. his comfort

  596. and guidance

  597. every step of the way?

  598. Absolutely.

  599. Because in suffering

  600. with Christ

  601. we have fellowship

  602. with him.

  603. He is with us

  604. and he is worth

  605. forsaking the entire

  606. world for.

  607. And because of this

  608. we can endure.

  609. Looking forward

  610. to the fact that

  611. the suffering

  612. in this life

  613. is not the end.

  614. It's not the final word.

  615. There will be glory

  616. that comes.

  617. There will be redemption,

  618. vindication

  619. that comes

  620. when Christ

  621. returns.

  622. Whether we die

  623. before he comes

  624. and go to him

  625. or whether we remain

  626. alive for his return

  627. we will see him

  628. face to face.

  629. And when we see him

  630. face to face

  631. the demons

  632. that we have been

  633. fighting both literal

  634. and figurative

  635. will be subdued

  636. underneath

  637. our feet.

  638. The world

  639. that had hated Christ

  640. and had persecuted

  641. his people

  642. will be repaid.

  643. the sins

  644. that had plagued

  645. us

  646. in this life

  647. that we had fought

  648. so long against

  649. will be behind us

  650. forever

  651. and all of our sorrows

  652. will be washed away

  653. and he will wipe

  654. away our tears

  655. and we will get

  656. to behold

  657. Christ's gracious

  658. and loving face

  659. the face of our Savior

  660. the one whom we

  661. today dream about

  662. and fight for

  663. and long for

  664. and persevere

  665. for.

  666. it's only by

  667. remembering this

  668. by living with

  669. awareness of

  670. and anticipation

  671. for the kingdom

  672. of God

  673. that we can

  674. persevere to the

  675. end

  676. and be faithful

  677. to Christ

  678. in the midst

  679. of our sufferings.

  680. And so Jesus

  681. continues this

  682. teaching in

  683. verses 26

  684. to 30

  685. verse 26

  686. just as it was

  687. in the days of

  688. Noah

  689. so will it be

  690. in the days

  691. of the Son of Man

  692. they were eating

  693. and drinking

  694. and marrying

  695. and being given

  696. in marriage

  697. until the day

  698. when Noah

  699. entered the ark

  700. and the flood

  701. came and destroyed

  702. them all

  703. likewise

  704. just as it was

  705. in the days

  706. of Lot

  707. they were eating

  708. and drinking

  709. and buying

  710. and selling

  711. and planting

  712. and building

  713. but on the day

  714. when Lot

  715. went out

  716. from Sodom

  717. fire and sulfur

  718. rained from heaven

  719. and destroyed them all

  720. So will it be on the day when the Son of Man is revealed.

  721. Jesus compares the time leading up to the return of Christ, His return in power.

  722. He compares that to the times of Noah and Lot.

  723. During the times of Noah and Lot, the people of that age were characterized by really unprecedented wickedness, desperate wickedness.

  724. And that's why they received such severe judgment.

  725. In Noah's time, by a flood that drowned them all during Lot's time, fired himself a kind of volcanic-like punishment raining from heaven.

  726. And only Noah and Lot and their families escaped these judgments.

  727. And they alone were prepared for God's judgment.

  728. And Jesus warns about that in the same way.

  729. And note the comparison that Jesus is making. It's very interesting.

  730. Because even though the times of Noah and Lot were characterized by great wickedness,

  731. Jesus makes nothing of how wicked they were.

  732. And Jesus is not trying to say here that His generation and the people that will be there at the time of Christ's return will be extraordinarily wicked.

  733. He doesn't say that.

  734. The only comparison He's making here is not of their depravity, but of their unawareness.

  735. Of the fact that they will be unsuspecting when Christ returns.

  736. They will be immersed in their normal, harmless, day-to-day activities.

  737. Like eating and drinking, marrying and being given in marriage, buying and selling, planting and building.

  738. And that's precisely the point.

  739. People will be going about their business as usual when the Son of Man returns in full glory and power.

  740. They will be completely oblivious to the fact that their eternal fate hangs in the balance.

  741. Jesus made a similar point earlier in Luke chapter 14 where people in a parable refused the invitation to God's heavenly banquet

    Luke 14 chapter mention

  742. because of their preoccupation with their property, their family and their jobs.

  743. These are necessary preoccupations of life.

  744. There's nothing inherently sinful about them.

  745. But even these harmless occupations, these concerns, they're not valid reasons for neglecting to pursue Jesus Christ.

  746. And if they become the reason why we do not pursue Jesus Christ, then they will become fatal reasons.

  747. They will become the reasons that damn us for eternity.

  748. This is an important point for us to recognize.

  749. I firmly believe that if you look at the spiritual obituary of the people that are in hell at the end of the days,

  750. many of them will have very ordinary sentences.

  751. Not that they committed heinous crimes,

  752. but that they were given to day-to-day preoccupations so that they were blind to Christ's message.

  753. That they didn't believe in Jesus.

  754. You can be unprepared for the return of Christ because you're consumed with being a serial adulterer.

  755. But you can also be unprepared because you're simply trying to be a devoted spouse and a family man.

  756. You can be unprepared for the return of Christ because you're a hedonist running headlong after all these illicit pleasures of life.

  757. But you can also be unprepared because you're simply distracted with working and earning money and buying and eating food.

  758. Christian writer C.S. Lewis illustrates this idea in a very imaginative way in his books, The Screwtape Letters.

  759. The Screwtape Letters is a series of dialogues between two demons.

  760. One is named Screwtape.

  761. He's kind of the senior devil.

  762. And he is advising kind of, I guess, an intern or whatever, Wormwood.

  763. And he advises him, interestingly, to involve his patient, his human subject, in ordinary kind of small sins.

  764. And he writes it this way.

  765. You will say that these are very small sins.

  766. And doubtless, like all young tempters, you are anxious to be able to report spectacular wickedness.

  767. But do remember, the only thing that matters is the extent to which you separate the man from the enemy.

  768. That's God.

  769. It does not matter how small the sins are, provided that their cumulative effect is to edge the man away from the light and out into the nothing.

  770. Murder is no better than cards if cards can do the trick.

  771. Indeed, the safest road to hell is the gradual one, the gentle slope, soft underfoot, without sudden turnings, without milestones, without signposts.

  772. Murder is no better than cards if cards can do the trick.

  773. Even things that are harmless in and of themselves, such as eating, drinking, buying and selling, planting and building, and marrying and being given in marriage.

  774. If they prevent us from being followers of Christ.

  775. If they lead us away from Christ, they'll lead us unawares down the path to hell.

  776. And that's why Jesus is warning his disciples sternly here.

  777. Don't be caught unprepared when the Son of Man returns to render his final judgment.

  778. Be expectant.

  779. Live with awareness of and anticipation for the kingdom of God.

  780. And if we live with such awareness and anticipation for Christ's return,

  781. we will not be encumbered by the things of this world.

  782. And that's what Jesus emphasizes in verses 31 to 32.

  783. On that day, let the one who is on the housetop with the goods in the house not come down to take them away.

  784. And likewise, let the one who is in the field not turn back.

  785. Remember Lot's wife.

  786. If you have ever done a fire drill at school, you are familiar with these instructions.

  787. First, stop whatever you are doing immediately.

  788. Second, do not gather your belongings.

  789. Leave everything behind.

  790. And third, head straight to the emergency exit.

  791. You guys have all heard these instructions.

  792. As a child, I always wondered why my teachers told me not to gather my belongings.

  793. If there's a fire, I don't want my stuff to burn.

  794. Why should I leave them behind?

  795. Of course, the rationale is that seconds can be the difference between life and death as a fire spreads.

  796. And the moments spent gathering your belongings can be your very undoing.

  797. And trying to carry, lug those luggages along with you can prevent you from a speedy exit.

  798. And it can in fact block other people from exiting as well.

  799. Jesus is getting at the same idea.

  800. On that day, let the one who is on the housetop with his goods in the house not come down to take them away.

  801. And likewise, let the one who is in the field not turn back.

  802. When Jesus returns, there will be no time to go back and gather our belongings.

  803. When Jesus returns, there will be no second chances, no time to change our mind.

  804. We will have to leave all of our earthly possessions and preoccupations behind us.

  805. And so Jesus warns us, remember Lot's wife.

  806. In Genesis 19, when God destroys Sodom and Gomorrah because of their exceeding wickedness,

  807. Lot's family alone is rescued because they're warned beforehand.

  808. And as the family is escaping, Lot's wife, it says, looked back at Sodom that was being destroyed.

  809. And she became a pillar of salt as punishment.

  810. Lot's wife could not leave the life she knew behind.

  811. She looked back with regret and longing and was punished as a result and became a pillar of salt.

  812. 19th century preacher Charles Spurgeon says this about Lot's wife, that she was, quote,

  813. almost saved, but not quiet.

  814. How tragic is that verdict?

  815. What are your worldly attachments?

  816. What are you trying to salvage from this world?

  817. The paycheck you worked hard for?

  818. The spouse or family you always wanted?

  819. The house you had dreamed of?

  820. The retirement you saved for?

  821. Are these things keeping you from following Christ?

  822. Will they say of you when you die, almost saved, but not quiet?

  823. Jesus continues in verse 33,

  824. Whoever seeks to preserve his life will lose it,

  825. but whoever loses his life will keep it.

  826. Whoever clings to his own life and tries to maintain his autonomy and rebellion against God,

  827. instead of surrendering his or her life to God,

  828. will actually end up losing his life.

  829. But whoever forsakes his own life for the sake of following Christ will end up saving it.

  830. So let me ask you, what good is grabbing your laptop only to be consumed by the fire?

  831. What good is having all the respect and power you could accumulate in this world?

  832. What good is being beautiful and desirable and famous?

  833. What good is a billion dollars?

  834. If after all, at the end of your days, you perish eternally apart from Christ?

  835. Only those who lose their lives in order to live for Christ will find eternal life.

  836. Only those who have a healthy disinterest in the things of this world

  837. will actually live in a way that gives evidence of interest in the kingdom of heaven.

  838. So I tell you, Jesus says in verses 34 to 35,

  839. Just to clarify, this is not speaking about the popular concept of rapture.

  840. I don't know if some of you guys have heard of that.

  841. It's the idea that all believers will instantaneously be transported from earth to heaven

  842. before Christ's return, or depending on how you view it, that could vary.

  843. But that idea of a rapture is not actually a biblical idea.

  844. It was popularized by the fictional series Left Behind.

  845. I don't know if you've read it.

  846. It's entertaining, but it's fiction.

  847. That idea of a rapture that you may be familiar with

  848. was invented by a man named John Nelson Darby in the 19th century.

  849. It has no historical basis in church history.

  850. It has no scriptural basis in God's word.

  851. It's based on a misinterpretation of 1 Corinthians 15, verse 52.

    1 Corinthians 15:52

  852. The only kind of rapture that the Bible speaks of is in 1 Thessalonians 4, verse 17,

    1 Thessalonians 4:17

  853. where it says that those who are alive at the time of Christ's return, who are left,

  854. will be caught up in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air,

  855. and so will always be with the Lord.

  856. That's the only kind of rapture that the Bible speaks of.

  857. And there, the word to meet the Lord in the air is not speaking of departing

  858. and being transported away from earth.

  859. It's actually the word that is used when you go out of your house

  860. to greet a guest that's coming so that you could usher them in into your house.

  861. So the going up to meet the Lord in the air is you meet Him in heaven,

  862. in the air, so you can come down with Him to be a part of His rule and reign

  863. in the new heavens and the new earth.

  864. So it's not talking about rapture that you're disappearing.

  865. So that's not in view here at all in verses 34 to 35.

  866. What I think is in view here is instead at the final judgment,

  867. there will be a clear separation between those who belong to Christ

  868. and those who do not.

  869. By all outward appearances, humanly speaking, they will be indistinguishable,

  870. but they will be distinguished by their allegiance to Christ.

  871. They could be roommates or siblings or husband and wife sharing one bed in a room,

  872. sleeping at night, but one will be taken and the other left.

  873. They could be next door neighbors or co-workers grinding at the mill together,

  874. the ones you share your desk with, the ones that you are in the same project with,

  875. but one will be taken and the other left.

  876. That's why the urgency to share the gospel is ever present with us.

  877. And even though Jesus already taught His disciples in verses 23 to 24

  878. that there's no reason to look for this and search for His return,

  879. it will be as plain and visible to all like a lightning that lights up the sky,

  880. disciples can't help but to still ask at the end here in verse 37,

  881. where, Lord?

  882. Where will all these things take place?

  883. Where will the Son of Man descend?

  884. Where will the separation of the righteous and the wicked take place?

  885. And Jesus reiterates His earlier point by quoting a proverb.

  886. Where the course is, there the vultures will gather.

  887. Jesus uses the same proverb in Matthew 24, 28,

  888. and there, and likely here as well,

  889. I think Jesus is just using that to make a general point.

  890. It's similar to the English proverb that we're familiar with,

  891. where there's smoke, there's fire.

  892. If you see smoke, that's evidence that there's fire somewhere.

  893. In the same way, wherever the vultures are gathered,

  894. you can be sure that there is a corpse.

  895. So the presence of vultures invariably indicate that there's a corpse.

  896. In a similar way, when you observe these things that Jesus speaks of,

  897. when the judgment is taking place, there will be no mistaking it.

  898. There will be no missing it.

  899. It will be obvious when it happens.

  900. Jesus will certainly return to judge the world,

  901. and He will appear when people are least expecting Him.

  902. And when He comes, there will be no opportunity to change our minds last minute.

  903. His judgment will be final,

  904. and that's why we as God's people must live with awareness of

  905. and anticipation for the Kingdom of God.

  906. But I want to ask you,

  907. if you are all prepared for His coming,

  908. some of you have not yet put your faith in Jesus Christ,

  909. how then can you prepare for this fearful judgment?

  910. How can you escape God's judgment?

  911. Jesus hinted at this earlier in verse 25 when He said,

  912. But first, the Son of Man must suffer many things

  913. and be rejected by this generation.

  914. Jesus is on His way right now to Jerusalem

  915. to die on the cross for the sins of those who put their faith in Him.

  916. And He does it for our sake.

  917. Jesus is the loyal Son of God

  918. who alone does not deserve to be punished.

  919. None of us deserve to escape the flood judgment

  920. that befell Noah's population.

  921. None of us deserves to escape the sulfur and fire

  922. that came on Lot's generation.

  923. We all deserve God's fearful wrath

  924. because we have rebelled against Him

  925. even though we are creatures that belong to Him,

  926. are accountable to Him.

  927. We have lived for ourselves,

  928. for our own glory,

  929. for our own selfish pleasures,

  930. instead of living for God.

  931. Someone must pay the price.

  932. And God, out of His love for us,

  933. sent His only Son, Jesus Christ,

  934. to pay the penalty for our sins on the cross

  935. so that we who believe in Him

  936. might be forgiven of our sins.

  937. might be received as good subjects,

  938. citizens in good standing of the kingdom of God.

  939. And as people who have experienced that mercy and grace,

  940. that's how we live now

  941. without seeking to preserve our own lives.

  942. We live to lose our lives for the sake of Christ

  943. with awareness and anticipation

  944. for the kingdom of God.
