  1. Luke chapter 19 verses 28 to 44.

    Luke 19:28–44

  2. And when he had said these things, he went on ahead going up to Jerusalem.

  3. When he drew near to Bethphagia and Bethany at the mount that is called Olivet,

  4. he sent two of the disciples saying,

  5. Go into the village in front of you, where on entering you will find a colt tie

  6. on which no one has ever yet sat.

  7. Untie it and bring it here.

  8. If anyone asks you, why are you untying it?

  9. You shall say this, the Lord has need of it.

  10. So those who were sent went away and found it just as he had told them.

  11. And as they were untying the colt, its owner said to them,

  12. Why are you untying the colt?

  13. And they said, the Lord has need of it.

  14. And they brought it to Jesus.

  15. And throwing their cloaks on the colt, they set Jesus on it.

  16. And as he rode along, they spread their cloaks on the road.

  17. As he was drawing near, already on the way down the mount of all this,

  18. the whole multitude of his disciples began to rejoice and praise God with a loud voice

  19. for all the mighty works that they had seen, saying,

  20. Blessed is the king who comes in the name of the Lord.

  21. Peace in heaven and glory in the highest.

  22. And some of the Pharisees in the crowd said to him,

  23. Teacher, rebuke your disciples.

  24. He answered, I tell you, if these were silent, the very stones would cry out.

  25. And when he drew near and saw the city, he wept over it, saying,

  26. Would that you, even you, had known on this day the things that make for peace.

  27. But now they are hidden from your eyes.

  28. For the days will come upon you when your enemies will set up a barricade around you

  29. and surround you and hem you in on every side

  30. and tear you down to the ground, you and your children within you.

  31. And they will not leave one stone upon another in you

  32. because you did not know the time of your visitation.

  33. This is God's holy and authoritative word.

  34. At the site of the, Boston being the site of the many crucial events of the American Revolution,

  35. fittingly boasts a splendid July 4th celebration each year.

  36. I don't know if any of you have been.

  37. This year, an estimated half million people, many of them clad in red, white, and blue,

  38. gathered along the Charles River Esplanade to celebrate Independence Day.

  39. If you've ever gone down to see Boston Pops concert and the fireworks,

  40. you understand the sheer scale of what I'm talking about.

  41. Half a million people.

  42. The energy is electric.

  43. Large crowds.

  44. They're shouting, clapping.

  45. It's thunderous.

  46. They're swarming from place to place.

  47. And these kinds of large crowds can make governing authorities and police forces very nervous

  48. because things can get out of hand.

  49. And given the right set of circumstances,

  50. a peaceful gathering of people can all of a sudden be ignited and become a violent mob.

  51. As we see later in Luke chapter 22, verse 7,

    Luke 22:7

  52. Jesus is here entering Jerusalem on the week of Passover.

  53. Passover.

  54. That means, it's the biggest Jewish celebration.

  55. That means hundreds of thousands of Jewish pilgrims from all over the Middle East and the Mediterranean region

  56. are gathering this week in Jerusalem to celebrate the Passover.

  57. Much like the hundreds of thousands of American patriots from all over New England

  58. gathering in Boston to celebrate Independence Day.

  59. And the similarity doesn't end there.

  60. Remember that the Passover, which the Jews had been celebrating for over 1400 years by this time,

  61. was a celebration of God's deliverance of Israel from their captivity in Egypt.

  62. It's pretty much the Jewish equivalent of Independence Day.

  63. Except, they weren't independent anymore.

  64. Now they were occupied by the Romans.

  65. And they had been waiting for God to send another deliverer like Moses or King David

  66. to free them from this Roman occupation.

  67. So now imagine celebrating Independence Day right under the noses of your occupiers.

  68. Can you see why this might make the Roman authorities nervous?

  69. You can just picture it.

  70. A Jewish family gathers around that night, around the hearth,

  71. and they're eating the Passover meal in solemnity.

  72. And then they begin to tell the story of the Exodus to their children.

  73. Our forefathers were enslaved by the Egyptians for nearly 300 years.

  74. They put slave drivers over them and worked them hard ruthlessly.

  75. And not only this, Pharaoh ordered that every newborn male Jewish boy be killed.

  76. But one survived.

  77. His name was Moses.

  78. He grew up, and as a man, he was called by God to rescue our people from Egypt.

  79. He split the Red Sea by God's power and delivered us from the Egyptians.

  80. And then they mutter under their breath,

  81. God can do it again.

  82. He will rescue us from the Romans.

  83. Because the Lord himself had prophesied,

  84. he promised in Deuteronomy 18.18,

  85. I will raise up for you a prophet like Moses from among your brothers,

  86. and I will put my words in his mouth,

  87. and he shall speak to you all that I command him.

  88. A prophet like Moses will come and deliver.

  89. That's the promise.

  90. So you can imagine the kind of nationalistic fervor

  91. that would have spread throughout the Passover celebrations.

  92. And that's why Pontius Pilate, the governor of Judea,

  93. is in Jerusalem, as we learn later in Luke chapter 23.

    Luke 23 chapter mention

  94. He normally resided in Caesarea,

  95. which is kind of the modern equivalent of where Tel Aviv would be in relation to Jerusalem.

  96. But he traveled to Jerusalem during the celebration of Passover to maintain order,

  97. because he knew what kind of gathering this was,

  98. how significant it was,

  99. how dangerous potentially it was.

  100. And by this time, Roman Empire has ruled,

  101. really, it's kind of their territorial peak,

  102. peak of their conquest.

  103. They know how to control the crowds.

  104. They know what's necessary.

  105. And it's in this mood that Jesus is approaching Jerusalem.

  106. And you have to understand that context to fully appreciate what's going on here.

  107. And we see the glory of the king.

  108. Look at verses 28 and 29.

  109. And when he had said these things,

  110. he went on ahead, going up to Jerusalem.

  111. When he drew near to Bethphage and Bethany,

  112. at the mount that is called Olivet,

  113. he sent two of the disciples.

  114. The names mentioned here are significant.

  115. First, Jesus is drawing near to Bethphage,

  116. which in Aramaic means house of unripe figs.

  117. Fresh figs, unripe figs.

  118. It recalls the parable of the barren fig tree

  119. that Jesus told in Luke chapter 13, verses 6 to 9.

    Luke 13:6–9

  120. In that parable, Jesus compared the nation of Israel to a fig tree

  121. that's about to be cut down because it's not bearing any fruit.

  122. And the name Bethphage is ironic.

  123. It's supposed to be.

  124. You're supposed to be the city of fresh, unripe fruit.

  125. Fruit figs.

  126. But the people of Israel are not fertile.

  127. They're not producing any fruit.

  128. It's barren.

  129. It's the house of no figs.

  130. And Luke also specifically mentions that Jesus stopped at the mount

  131. that is called Olivet.

  132. It's noted again later in verse 37

  133. that Jesus was at the mount of olives.

  134. And this is because it was prophesied in Zechariah 14

  135. that the Messiah, the promised King of God

  136. who will redeem God's people,

  137. would come to Jerusalem and stand on the mount of olives.

  138. So this passage through many signals and clues

  139. is making it abundantly clear to us

  140. that Jesus is the messianic king

  141. that has come to rescue God's people.

  142. And that pair of ideas,

  143. the stubborn refusal of the people of God

  144. to recognize,

  145. their refusal to recognize God's king,

  146. Jesus' kingship,

  147. and Jesus' glorious reign,

  148. his messianic identity,

  149. they create this tension

  150. that kind of runs through the rest of the Gospel of Luke.

  151. And that tension continues to build

  152. as Jesus is drawing near to Jerusalem.

  153. That verb, as you saw here in verse 29,

  154. is a key word that's repeated

  155. throughout Jesus' journey to Jerusalem.

  156. And already in 1835 and 1911,

  157. the word was used

  158. to indicate that Jesus was drawing near to Jerusalem.

  159. And it will be used two more times in this passage

  160. in 1937 and 1941.

  161. At every point,

  162. the geographical marker

  163. is that Jesus is drawing near.

  164. That's where the confrontation

  165. is going to take place.

  166. That's where the climax

  167. of this salvation history narrative

  168. is going to be.

  169. And it will be resolved soon in Jerusalem.

  170. And so sending two of his disciples out,

  171. Jesus now instructs them this way

  172. in verses 30 to 31.

  173. Go into the village in front of you,

  174. where on entering you will find a colt tied

  175. on which no one has ever yet sat.

  176. Untie it and bring it here.

  177. If anyone asks you,

  178. why are you untying it?

  179. You shall say this,

  180. the Lord has need of it.

  181. The supernatural knowledge

  182. that Jesus is displaying here

  183. shows that he is in full control

  184. of what is going on.

  185. He's not just,

  186. it's not an accident

  187. that he is going to Jerusalem.

  188. What's going to happen to him there,

  189. he's not,

  190. he's not happening to him

  191. unbeknownst to him.

  192. He knows fully what is going on.

  193. And Jesus is aware

  194. that his two disciples

  195. will find a colt tied

  196. there in the village.

  197. That in and of itself

  198. is not all that remarkable.

  199. I mean,

  200. there could have been a number

  201. of colts in that village.

  202. But what's remarkable

  203. is that Jesus knows

  204. that this is a colt

  205. on which no one

  206. has ever yet sat.

  207. It suggests purity.

  208. Several Old Testament passages

  209. speak of bringing an animal

  210. for sacrifice

  211. that has never been worked

  212. and that has never worn a yoke.

  213. This is a brand new,

  214. unused, unadulterated,

  215. unbroken animal

  216. fit to be ridden by a king.

  217. Not only this,

  218. but Jesus also anticipates

  219. that someone might ask,

  220. why are you untying it?

  221. Of course,

  222. that's a natural question

  223. to ask a pair of strangers.

  224. On time,

  225. you're colt.

  226. But Jesus tells them

  227. to simply respond by saying,

  228. the Lord has need of it.

  229. Imagine that.

  230. It's hard to imagine

  231. how that would be

  232. an adequate answer

  233. to anybody.

  234. The Lord has need of it?

  235. Who's this Lord

  236. you're talking about?

  237. Do I know this Lord?

  238. But Jesus seems to think

  239. that this short reply

  240. will suffice.

  241. And that speaks to

  242. his kingship and authority.

  243. We've already seen

  244. multiple times

  245. throughout the Gospel of Luke

  246. that the term Lord,

  247. especially when used of Jesus,

  248. it has rich theological meaning.

  249. God was described as Lord

  250. early in chapter 1.

  251. In Luke 2.11,

  252. at Jesus' birth,

  253. he was described as a Savior

  254. who is Christ the Lord.

  255. He's referring to his kingship,

  256. his messianic identity.

  257. And in the ancient world,

  258. it was understood

  259. among the subjects

  260. of a kingdom

  261. that the king

  262. had the right

  263. to impress

  264. into his own service

  265. the properties

  266. of his subjects.

  267. they had a name

  268. for that.

  269. If a king comes by

  270. to your house

  271. and he sees a nice colt

  272. and he says,

  273. I have need of this,

  274. he had the right

  275. to take that,

  276. to claim that

  277. in precedence

  278. into his service.

  279. The subjects of the kingdom

  280. understood this.

  281. So Jesus is here

  282. acting like royalty.

  283. This is my prerogative

  284. as the king.

  285. And so,

  286. lo and behold,

  287. the disciples' journey

  288. to this village

  289. and it unfolds

  290. just as Jesus predicted.

  291. It says in verses

  292. 32 to 34,

  293. so those who were sent

  294. went away

  295. and found it

  296. just as he had told them.

  297. And as they were

  298. untying the colt,

  299. its owner said to them,

  300. why are you

  301. untying the colt?

  302. And they said,

  303. the Lord has need of it.

  304. There's a really

  305. powerful wordplay here

  306. that's not obvious

  307. in the English translation.

  308. In the Greek original,

  309. the word owners

  310. is literally

  311. masters.

  312. Or lords.

  313. It's the same word

  314. that is used

  315. of Jesus

  316. as the Lord.

  317. So then,

  318. there's a clash

  319. of lords

  320. in this scene.

  321. The lords of the donkey,

  322. the owners,

  323. the masters of the donkey,

  324. sorry,

  325. that sounds kind of funny.

  326. The lords of the donkey

  327. ask,

  328. why are you

  329. untying the colt?

  330. And Jesus' disciples

  331. simply answer them,

  332. the Lord

  333. has need of it.

  334. The Lord

  335. of creation

  336. has greater authority

  337. and takes priority

  338. over the lords

  339. of the colt.

  340. Christ the Lord

  341. is lord

  342. over all the other

  343. lords.

  344. And this wordplay

  345. reveals Jesus'

  346. sovereignty

  347. and authority

  348. in whatever it is

  349. in our own lives

  350. that we imagine

  351. ourselves to be

  352. lords over.

  353. Our families,

  354. our careers,

  355. our money,

  356. our time,

  357. our lives,

  358. the lordship

  359. of Christ

  360. takes precedence.

  361. The king

  362. has the right

  363. to impress

  364. into his service

  365. anything that

  366. belongs to us

  367. because they all

  368. ultimately

  369. belong to him.

  370. This encounter

  371. with the donkey's

  372. owners

  373. and the fact

  374. that everything

  375. happens exactly

  376. as Jesus predicted

  377. shows just how

  378. in control

  379. Jesus is

  380. as he is

  381. approaching

  382. Jerusalem

  383. where he will

  384. die.

  385. And when the

  386. disciples bring

  387. back the donkey

  388. to Jesus

  389. it's finally

  390. clear now

  391. what the donkey

  392. is for.

  393. It's Passover

  394. you sacrifice

  395. a lamb

  396. not a donkey.

  397. What's a donkey

  398. for?

  399. It says in

  400. verse 35

  401. and they brought

  402. it to Jesus

  403. and throwing

  404. their cloaks

  405. on the colt

  406. they set

  407. Jesus

  408. on it.

  409. It's a

  410. glorious scene.

  411. Jesus

  412. rise

  413. on the donkey

  414. as he approaches

  415. Jerusalem.

  416. This is significant

  417. also because of

  418. another prophecy

  419. in Zechariah

  420. 9.9

  421. It described

  422. the messianic

  423. king in this way

  424. rejoice

  425. greatly

  426. O daughter

  427. of Zion

  428. shout aloud

  429. O daughter

  430. of Jerusalem

  431. behold

  432. your king

  433. is coming

  434. to you

  435. righteous

  436. and having

  437. salvation

  438. is he

  439. humble

  440. and mounted

  441. on a donkey

  442. on a colt

  443. the foal

  444. of a donkey

  445. again

  446. Jesus

  447. is the messianic

  448. king

  449. that is coming

  450. now

  451. there's a

  452. widespread

  453. misunderstanding

  454. that

  455. riding on a donkey

  456. is kind of

  457. this lowly

  458. and humble

  459. thing

  460. something that's

  461. reserved for

  462. common village folk

  463. but that's not

  464. true

  465. Jesus

  466. was a

  467. humble

  468. king

  469. he's described

  470. as humble

  471. in Zechariah

  472. 9.9

  473. but his

  474. humility

  475. does not

  476. stem from

  477. the lowliness

  478. of the donkey

  479. the fact that

  480. his vehicle

  481. is not that

  482. glorious

  483. rather it

  484. stems from

  485. his posture

  486. of submission

  487. and dependence

  488. on his father

  489. he's going

  490. ahead to

  491. Jerusalem

  492. with fully

  493. knowing that

  494. his crucifixion

  495. awaits him

  496. like a lamb

  497. being led

  498. to the slaughter

  499. Jesus

  500. is obediently

  501. submitting to

  502. his father

  503. and going

  504. to Jerusalem

  505. and that's

  506. where his

  507. humility

  508. lies

  509. the fact that

  510. he's riding

  511. on a donkey

  512. is not what

  513. makes him

  514. humble

  515. his humility

  516. lies in the

  517. fact that

  518. Jesus does

  519. not come to

  520. conquer by

  521. military force

  522. but he comes

  523. to bring peace

  524. between God

  525. and man

  526. through his

  527. death on the

  528. cross

  529. in fact

  530. riding on a

  531. donkey

  532. is not a

  533. sign of

  534. lowliness

  535. it's a sign

  536. of royalty

  537. to give you

  538. some examples

  539. judges 10

  540. 3-4

  541. it describes

  542. Jer of

  543. Gilead

  544. a judge

  545. of Israel

  546. for 22

  547. years

  548. ruler of

  549. Israel

  550. he says

  551. he had

  552. 30 sons

  553. who rode

  554. 30 donkeys

  555. and controlled

  556. 30 cities

  557. in Gilead

  558. riding a donkey

  559. is a symbol

  560. of rulership

  561. similarly

  562. in 1st Kings

  563. 1

  564. 32-35

  565. King David

  566. commands

  567. Zadok the priest

  568. and Nathan the prophet

  569. to have Solomon

  570. his son

  571. ride on his

  572. own mule

  573. in order

  574. to declare

  575. him king

  576. to prove

  577. to the people

  578. that he is

  579. in fact

  580. his chosen

  581. successor

  582. because he's

  583. riding on

  584. David's own

  585. mule

  586. finally there's

  587. a letter

  588. that archaeologists

  589. discovered

  590. from Mari

  591. it's an ancient

  592. Sumerian city

  593. same area

  594. as where

  595. this is taking

  596. place

  597. and it says

  598. verily you are

  599. the king

  600. of the Heneans

  601. but secondly

  602. you are the king

  603. of the Akkadians

  604. my lord

  605. should not

  606. ride a horse

  607. let my lord

  608. ride in a chariot

  609. or on a mule

  610. and he will

  611. thereby honor

  612. his royal head

  613. donkey riding

  614. is a sign

  615. of royalty

  616. it's of kingship

  617. it's not a sign

  618. of lowly

  619. common villagers

  620. a military general

  621. seeking to conquer

  622. a city

  623. would ride

  624. in galloping

  625. in on a stallion

  626. but a king

  627. who already

  628. owns the city

  629. would trot

  630. gently

  631. on a mule

  632. with dignity

  633. Jesus knows

  634. this full well

  635. and he commandeers

  636. a donkey

  637. on his way

  638. into Jerusalem

  639. this is intended

  640. to be an awe

  641. inspiring

  642. and breathtaking

  643. sight

  644. remember there are

  645. hundreds of

  646. thousands

  647. of pilgrims

  648. in and around

  649. Jerusalem

  650. for the celebration

  651. of the Passover

  652. every single

  653. one of them

  654. would have been

  655. arriving on foot

  656. and yet

  657. amidst a sea

  658. of people

  659. there is one man

  660. in the horizon

  661. rising above

  662. the rest

  663. one man

  664. who dares

  665. to ride

  666. a donkey

  667. in legal fashion

  668. while all

  669. others are

  670. walking

  671. Jesus

  672. is not

  673. being demure

  674. about his kingship

  675. he is

  676. putting the city

  677. on notice

  678. the king

  679. has come

  680. it's an amazing

  681. scene

  682. this is confirmed

  683. by verse 36

  684. which says

  685. that as he

  686. rode along

  687. the disciples

  688. spread their cloaks

  689. on the road

  690. spreading garments

  691. on the ground

  692. so that a person

  693. does not have to walk

  694. on the bare earth

  695. is a gesture

  696. of honor

  697. and respect

  698. to a king

  699. similar to the practice

  700. of rolling out

  701. the red carpet

  702. for presidents

  703. and other heads

  704. of state

  705. on formal occasions

  706. you can see

  707. an example

  708. of this

  709. in 2nd Kings

  710. 9.13

  711. where people

  712. lay their garments

  713. on the steps

  714. for the newly

  715. declared king

  716. Jehu

  717. to walk on

  718. this reminds me

  719. of the disciples

  720. doing this

  721. reminds me of

  722. Aladdin

  723. you guys have all

  724. seen the movie

  725. I haven't seen

  726. the live action one

  727. but there's a scene

  728. where Genie

  729. what does he turn him into

  730. he turns Aladdin

  731. into a real prince

  732. and he's coming in

  733. to introduce himself

  734. to Jasmine

  735. and he's saying

  736. telling everybody

  737. to make way

  738. he's to genuflect

  739. and show some respect

  740. right

  741. that's exactly what

  742. these disciples are doing

  743. they're rolling out

  744. the red carpet

  745. putting their clothes

  746. so that everybody

  747. sees around them

  748. you see what we're

  749. doing here

  750. you see what kind

  751. of person this is

  752. we're attending

  753. to the king

  754. make way

  755. show some respect

  756. and the rest

  757. of Jesus' disciples

  758. not just his

  759. immediate circle

  760. of twelve apostles

  761. but the larger

  762. multitude of disciples

  763. that knew about him

  764. and followed him

  765. they catch on

  766. to what is going on

  767. and then join in

  768. on the festivities

  769. in Jerusalem

  770. approaching Jerusalem

  771. it says in verses

  772. 37 to 38

  773. as he was drawing near

  774. already on the way

  775. down the Mount

  776. of Olives

  777. the whole multitude

  778. of his disciples

  779. began to rejoice

  780. and praise God

  781. with a loud voice

  782. for all the mighty works

  783. that they had seen

  784. saying

  785. blessed is the king

  786. who comes

  787. in the name of the Lord

  788. peace in heaven

  789. and glory

  790. in the highest

  791. they're worshipping

  792. they're praising God

  793. on account of the mighty works

  794. that Jesus has done

  795. up to this point

  796. in the gospel of Luke

  797. Jesus has made

  798. lepers clean

  799. he has made

  800. the deaf speak

  801. the blind see

  802. the lame walk

  803. he has made

  804. demoniacs free

  805. and he has proclaimed

  806. all along

  807. the good news

  808. of the kingdom

  809. of God

  810. and it says

  811. he brings peace

  812. in heaven

  813. and glory

  814. in the highest

  815. this is an echo

  816. of what the angels

  817. announced

  818. at the birth

  819. of Jesus

  820. in chapter 2

  821. verses 10 to 14

  822. there at the beginning

  823. of Jesus' life

  824. a multitude

  825. of the heavenly host

  826. he said

  827. praised God

  828. saying glory

  829. glory to God

  830. in the highest

  831. and on earth

  832. peace among those

  833. with whom he is pleased

  834. and now at the end

  835. of Jesus' life

  836. the whole multitude

  837. of his disciples

  838. same one

  839. began to rejoice

  840. and praise God

  841. saying peace

  842. in heaven

  843. and glory

  844. in the highest

  845. do you guys see

  846. the kind of

  847. the juxtaposition

  848. they're supposed

  849. to be paired together

  850. you're supposed to see them

  851. because on the one

  852. it's angels

  853. saying there's now

  854. peace on earth

  855. and now

  856. it's the disciples

  857. saying

  858. there's peace

  859. in heaven

  860. multitude

  861. Jesus is bringing

  862. together

  863. in his person

  864. and in his work

  865. heaven and the earth

  866. he's serving

  867. as the mediator

  868. between God

  869. and man

  870. as it says

  871. in 1 Timothy 2

  872. 5

  873. all of humanity

  874. has sinned against God

  875. that includes

  876. all of us

  877. instead of submitting

  878. to his rule

  879. we rebelled against him

  880. and became his enemies

  881. we have all done that

  882. we were alienated

  883. from God

  884. by our sins

  885. and God

  886. was alienated

  887. from us

  888. by his wrath

  889. towards sinners

  890. Jesus

  891. came to bridge

  892. this gap

  893. and reconcile

  894. us to God

  895. as the one

  896. mediator

  897. by dying

  898. on the cross

  899. as our substitute

  900. to pay the penalty

  901. for our sins

  902. and in doing that

  903. Jesus

  904. atones for our sins

  905. therefore taking away

  906. what alienated us

  907. from God

  908. and he also

  909. appeases

  910. God's wrath

  911. thereby taking away

  912. what alienated God

  913. from us

  914. he brings peace

  915. in heaven

  916. peace on earth

  917. so that there's

  918. angels praising him

  919. and disciples

  920. on earth

  921. praising him

  922. some of you

  923. have not yet

  924. been reconciled

  925. to God

  926. you remain

  927. God's enemy

  928. because you

  929. have not

  930. repented

  931. of your sins

  932. because you

  933. have not

  934. submitted to him

  935. you feel

  936. this restlessness

  937. of life

  938. apart

  939. from God

  940. the lingering

  941. sense that

  942. things are not

  943. the way

  944. they are supposed

  945. to be

  946. that you're

  947. missing something

  948. you have no

  949. peace

  950. you don't feel

  951. whole

  952. what you need

  953. more than

  954. anything else

  955. is peace

  956. with God

  957. the forgiveness

  958. of sins

  959. reconciliation

  960. with God

  961. that's what

  962. Jesus has

  963. come to

  964. offer us

  965. the son of

  966. God

  967. the messianic

  968. king

  969. has come

  970. to broker

  971. the peace

  972. between God

  973. and man

  974. if you only

  975. turn to him

  976. and believe

  977. in him

  978. and pledge

  979. your allegiance

  980. to him

  981. you will

  982. be saved

  983. you will

  984. have peace

  985. this picture

  986. of Jesus

  987. reception

  988. in Jerusalem

  989. is an

  990. invitation

  991. to us

  992. to receive

  993. Jesus

  994. as our

  995. king

  996. and to

  997. cry out

  998. like the

  999. disciples

  1000. here

  1001. blessed

  1002. is the

  1003. king

  1004. who

  1005. comes

  1006. in the

  1007. name

  1008. of

  1009. the

  1010. Lord

  1011. that

  1012. line

  1013. is

  1014. actually

  1015. a

  1016. quotation

  1017. from

  1018. the

  1019. Old

  1020. Testament

  1021. it's

  1022. from

  1023. 118

  1024. verse

  1025. 26

  1026. it

  1027. speaks

  1028. of

  1029. the

  1030. welcome

  1031. that

  1032. the

  1033. messianic

  1034. king

  1035. would

  1036. receive

  1037. from

  1038. his

  1039. people

  1040. interestingly

  1041. Jesus

  1042. quoted

  1043. this

  1044. Psalm

  1045. earlier

  1046. in

  1047. Luke

    Luke 13 chapter mention

  1048. chapter

  1049. 13

  1050. as

  1051. well

  1052. and

  1053. there

  1054. he

  1055. was

  1056. pronouncing

  1057. prophetic

  1058. judgment

  1059. over

  1060. the

  1061. nation

  1062. of

  1063. Israel

  1064. which

  1065. had

  1066. rejected

  1067. him

  1068. he

  1069. said

  1070. at

  1071. that

  1072. point

  1073. in

  1074. Luke

  1075. 13

  1076. behold

  1077. your

  1078. house

  1079. is

  1080. forsaken

  1081. and

  1082. I

  1083. tell

  1084. you

  1085. you

  1086. will

  1087. not

  1088. see

  1089. me

  1090. until

  1091. you

  1092. say

  1093. blessed

  1094. is

  1095. he

  1096. who

  1097. comes

  1098. in

  1099. the

  1100. name

  1101. of

  1102. the

  1103. Lord

  1104. now

  1105. that

  1106. moment

  1107. in

  1108. the

  1109. gospel

  1110. of

  1111. Luke

  1112. was

  1113. a

  1114. pivot

  1115. point

  1116. in

  1117. Jesus

  1118. ministry

  1119. up

  1120. to

  1121. that

  1122. point

  1123. Jesus

  1124. had

  1125. been

  1126. ministering

  1127. generally

  1128. to

  1129. all

  1130. people

  1131. of

  1132. Israel

  1133. and

  1134. calling

  1135. them

  1136. to

  1137. repentance

  1138. and

  1139. salvation

  1140. however

  1141. from

  1142. that

  1143. point

  1144. on

  1145. after

  1146. he

  1147. says

  1148. you

  1149. have

  1150. rejected

  1151. me

  1152. your

  1153. house

  1154. has

  1155. been

  1156. forsaken

  1157. and

  1158. you

  1159. will

  1160. not

  1161. see

  1162. me

  1163. until

  1164. you

  1165. say

  1166. blessed

  1167. is

  1168. the

  1169. one

  1170. who

  1171. comes

  1172. in

  1173. name

  1174. of

  1175. the

  1176. Lord

  1177. after

  1178. that

  1179. point

  1180. Jesus

  1181. focuses

  1182. on

  1183. instructing

  1184. his

  1185. disciples

  1186. and

  1187. it's

  1188. these

  1189. disciples

  1190. that

  1191. are

  1192. right

  1193. now

  1194. proclaiming

  1195. blessed

  1196. is

  1197. the

  1198. king

  1199. who

  1200. comes

  1201. in

  1202. the

  1203. name

  1204. of

  1205. the

  1206. Lord

  1207. and

  1208. that

  1209. begs

  1210. the

  1211. question

  1212. will

  1213. the

  1214. people

  1215. will

  1216. the

  1217. nation

  1218. of

  1219. Israel

  1220. will

  1221. they

  1222. receive

  1223. Jesus

  1224. as

  1225. their

  1226. king

  1227. as

  1228. the

  1229. disciples

  1230. have

  1231. done

  1232. as

  1233. the

  1234. disciples

  1235. are

  1236. proclaiming

  1237. will

  1238. they

  1239. finally

  1240. recognize

  1241. Jesus

  1242. as

  1243. their

  1244. long

  1245. awaited

  1246. Messiah

  1247. or

  1248. will

  1249. they

  1250. reject

  1251. him

  1252. finally

  1253. as

  1254. they

  1255. did

  1256. in

  1257. chapter

  1258. 13

  1259. and

  1260. we

  1261. see

  1262. a

  1263. decisive

  1264. clue

  1265. to

  1266. that

  1267. question

  1268. verse

  1269. 39

  1270. and

  1271. some

  1272. of

  1273. the

  1274. Pharisees

  1275. in

  1276. the

  1277. crowd

  1278. said

  1279. to

  1280. him

  1281. teacher

  1282. rebuke

  1283. your

  1284. disciples

  1285. notice

  1286. the

  1287. contrast

  1288. between

  1289. what

  1290. Jesus

  1291. his

  1292. disciples

  1293. call

  1294. him

  1295. and

  1296. what

  1297. the

  1298. Pharisees

  1299. call

  1300. him

  1301. the

  1302. disciples

  1303. call

  1304. him

  1305. king

  1306. the

  1307. Pharisees

  1308. call

  1309. him

  1310. teacher

  1311. that

  1312. reveals

  1313. the

  1314. reason

  1315. for

  1316. the

  1317. Pharisees

  1318. objection

  1319. the

  1320. Pharisees

  1321. see

  1322. Jesus

  1323. only

  1324. as

  1325. another

  1326. rabbi

  1327. another

  1328. Jewish

  1329. teacher

  1330. so

  1331. to

  1332. them

  1333. it's

  1334. not

  1335. only

  1336. inappropriate

  1337. but

  1338. it's

  1339. near

  1340. blasphemous

  1341. for

  1342. Jesus

  1343. disciples

  1344. to

  1345. declare

  1346. blessed

  1347. is

  1348. the

  1349. king

  1350. who

  1351. comes

  1352. in

  1353. the

  1354. name

  1355. of

  1356. the

  1357. Lord

  1358. so

  1359. they're

  1360. flustered

  1361. and

  1362. they're

  1363. trying

  1364. to

  1365. regain

  1366. control

  1367. of

  1368. the

  1369. situation

  1370. and

  1371. they

  1372. ask

  1373. Jesus

  1374. hey

  1375. Jesus

  1376. teacher

  1377. rebuke

  1378. your

  1379. disciples

  1380. but

  1381. instead

  1382. of

  1383. rebuking

  1384. his

  1385. disciples

  1386. Jesus

  1387. rebukes

  1388. the

  1389. Pharisees

  1390. in

  1391. verse

  1392. 40

  1393. he

  1394. answered

  1395. I

  1396. tell

  1397. you

  1398. if

  1399. these

  1400. were

  1401. silent

  1402. the

  1403. very

  1404. stones

  1405. would

  1406. cry

  1407. out

  1408. praising

  1409. Jesus

  1410. as

  1411. God's

  1412. anointed

  1413. king

  1414. is

  1415. so

  1416. appropriate

  1417. it's

  1418. so

  1419. necessary

  1420. if

  1421. Jesus

  1422. his

  1423. disciples

  1424. don't

  1425. praise

  1426. him

  1427. the

  1428. very

  1429. stones

  1430. would

  1431. cry

  1432. out

  1433. stones

  1434. you

  1435. use

  1436. intention

  1437. the

  1438. stones

  1439. are

  1440. unthinking

  1441. unfeeling

  1442. inanimate

  1443. objects

  1444. yet

  1445. not

  1446. praising

  1447. Jesus

  1448. would

  1449. be

  1450. such

  1451. an

  1452. egregious

  1453. oversight

  1454. in

  1455. this

  1456. scene

  1457. it

  1458. would

  1459. be

  1460. such

  1461. a

  1462. flagrant

  1463. violation

  1464. of

  1465. the

  1466. creational

  1467. order

  1468. of

  1469. even

  1470. societal

  1471. order

  1472. that

  1473. these

  1474. very

  1475. stones

  1476. that

  1477. you

  1478. are

  1479. standing

  1480. on

  1481. would

  1482. be

  1483. compelled

  1484. to

  1485. praise

  1486. him

  1487. this

  1488. is

  1489. a

  1490. stinging

  1491. rebuke

  1492. even

  1493. the

  1494. rocks

  1495. know

  1496. who

  1497. I

  1498. am

  1499. and yet

  1500. do you

  1501. Pharisees

  1502. who claim

  1503. to be

  1504. the teachers

  1505. of God's

  1506. people

  1507. not know

  1508. who I

  1509. am

  1510. do you

  1511. feel compelled

  1512. to worship

  1513. Christ

  1514. the king

  1515. if you

  1516. really

  1517. saw

  1518. his

  1519. unparalleled

  1520. worth

  1521. his glory

  1522. his

  1523. righteousness

  1524. his mercy

  1525. his grace

  1526. his love

  1527. then you

  1528. would concur

  1529. with

  1530. Jesus'

  1531. assessment

  1532. if

  1533. these

  1534. were

  1535. silent

  1536. the

  1537. very

  1538. stones

  1539. would

  1540. cry

  1541. out

  1542. what

  1543. an

  1544. injustice

  1545. that

  1546. he's

  1547. not

  1548. being

  1549. praised

  1550. that

  1551. is

  1552. the

  1553. greatest

  1554. injustice

  1555. in

  1556. all

  1557. of

  1558. creation

  1559. that

  1560. Jesus

  1561. the

  1562. king

  1563. the

  1564. son

  1565. of

  1566. God

  1567. our

  1568. benefactor

  1569. our

  1570. savior

  1571. is not

  1572. worshipped

  1573. by every

  1574. tongue

  1575. in this

  1576. world

  1577. that

  1578. is the

  1579. greatest

  1580. injustice

  1581. in this

  1582. world

  1583. if you

  1584. really saw

  1585. who he

  1586. really is

  1587. praise

  1588. to him

  1589. would roll

  1590. off your

  1591. tongue

  1592. would not

  1593. be like

  1594. pulling

  1595. teeth

  1596. are you

  1597. more full

  1598. of grumbling

  1599. against God

  1600. than praise

  1601. to him

  1602. are you

  1603. more

  1604. self

  1605. absorbed

  1606. than

  1607. captivated

  1608. by God

  1609. are you

  1610. more

  1611. impressed

  1612. with

  1613. yourself

  1614. your

  1615. abilities

  1616. your

  1617. accomplishments

  1618. than with

  1619. who God

  1620. is and

  1621. what he

  1622. has done

  1623. are you

  1624. eager

  1625. to worship

  1626. God

  1627. do you

  1628. look forward

  1629. to gathering

  1630. with the

  1631. people of

  1632. God

  1633. to worship

  1634. to render

  1635. the praise

  1636. that is due

  1637. to his

  1638. name

  1639. it's

  1640. tragic

  1641. that we

  1642. as human

  1643. beings

  1644. who rule

  1645. the earth

  1646. with our

  1647. intelligence

  1648. and technological

  1649. advancements

  1650. we claim

  1651. so much

  1652. superiority

  1653. over the

  1654. rest of

  1655. creation

  1656. while missing

  1657. our fundamental

  1658. purpose

  1659. in life

  1660. that we

  1661. were created

  1662. to worship

  1663. God

  1664. which even

  1665. the inanimate

  1666. objects

  1667. of creation

  1668. recognize

  1669. we live

  1670. without

  1671. acknowledging

  1672. what even

  1673. the rocks

  1674. know

  1675. that Jesus

  1676. is king

  1677. that Jesus

  1678. is the son

  1679. of God

  1680. and he

  1681. is worthy

  1682. of our

  1683. worship

  1684. if you

  1685. are silent

  1686. the very

  1687. stones

  1688. would cry

  1689. out

  1690. are you

  1691. crying out

  1692. in praise

  1693. or do you

  1694. hear the

  1695. stones

  1696. crying out

  1697. all around

  1698. Jesus

  1699. knew

  1700. that his

  1701. hearts

  1702. were hardened

  1703. Jesus

  1704. knew

  1705. that he

  1706. would be

  1707. rejected

  1708. by his

  1709. own

  1710. people

  1711. in Jerusalem

  1712. and so

  1713. it says

  1714. in verses

  1715. 41 to

  1716. 42

  1717. and when

  1718. he drew

  1719. near

  1720. and saw

  1721. the city

  1722. he wept

  1723. over it

  1724. saying

  1725. would that

  1726. you

  1727. even you

  1728. had known

  1729. on this

  1730. day

  1731. the things

  1732. that make

  1733. for peace

  1734. but now

  1735. they are hidden

  1736. from your eyes

  1737. this is the only

  1738. place in the

  1739. gospel of Luke

  1740. where Jesus

  1741. is described

  1742. as weeping

  1743. and that word

  1744. it's the same

  1745. word that was

  1746. used earlier

  1747. in Luke

    Luke 7 chapter mention

  1748. chapter 7

  1749. to describe

  1750. the sinful

  1751. woman

  1752. who was

  1753. so overcome

  1754. with emotion

  1755. so grateful

  1756. to God

  1757. it says

  1758. that she

  1759. wept

  1760. at Jesus

  1761. feet

  1762. and she

  1763. shed

  1764. enough tears

  1765. that she

  1766. was able

  1767. to wash

  1768. Jesus feet

  1769. with her

  1770. tears

  1771. it's the same

  1772. word

  1773. weeping

  1774. that was used

  1775. to describe

  1776. in that same

  1777. chapter

  1778. in Luke

  1779. 7

  1780. to describe

  1781. a widow

  1782. who had

  1783. no one

  1784. no one

  1785. surviving her

  1786. no one

  1787. to take care

  1788. of her

  1789. a widow

  1790. who had

  1791. just lost

  1792. her only

  1793. son

  1794. weeping

  1795. during the

  1796. funeral procession

  1797. that's the word

  1798. that describes

  1799. Jesus here

  1800. it's not

  1801. describing a

  1802. silent shedding

  1803. of a tear

  1804. or two

  1805. it's describing

  1806. the kind of

  1807. heart-wrenching

  1808. audible

  1809. sob that you

  1810. hear

  1811. that just

  1812. heaves

  1813. and comes

  1814. from the chest

  1815. and convulses

  1816. your entire body

  1817. that's the kind

  1818. of weeping

  1819. that Jesus

  1820. is doing

  1821. here

  1822. because

  1823. of Jerusalem

  1824. that rejects

  1825. him

  1826. you could

  1827. hear

  1828. his

  1829. longing

  1830. in his

  1831. lament

  1832. would

  1833. that you

  1834. even you

  1835. had known

  1836. on this

  1837. day

  1838. the things

  1839. that make

  1840. for peace

  1841. oh how I

  1842. wish

  1843. that you

  1844. could have

  1845. known

  1846. this

  1847. peace

  1848. this is

  1849. what I

  1850. came to

  1851. do

  1852. I came

  1853. to give

  1854. you

  1855. this

  1856. peace

  1857. but instead

  1858. of receiving

  1859. me

  1860. as your

  1861. king

  1862. you've

  1863. rejected

  1864. me

  1865. the king

  1866. of peace

  1867. is right

  1868. before their

  1869. eyes

  1870. yet his

  1871. peace

  1872. is hidden

  1873. from them

  1874. because of

  1875. their hardness

  1876. of heart

  1877. 2nd Peter

  1878. chapter 3

  1879. verse 9

  1880. teaches us

  1881. that God

  1882. does not

  1883. wish

  1884. that any

  1885. should perish

  1886. but that

  1887. all should

  1888. reach

  1889. repentance

  1890. notwithstanding

  1891. the fact

  1892. that God

  1893. freely

  1894. and sovereignly

  1895. chooses

  1896. his people

  1897. for salvation

  1898. the Bible

  1899. also teaches

  1900. that he

  1901. wants

  1902. all

  1903. to be

  1904. saved

  1905. this is

  1906. not a

  1907. contradiction

  1908. it's a

  1909. paradox

  1910. that finds

  1911. its resolution

  1912. in God's

  1913. infinite

  1914. mind

  1915. the two

  1916. propositions

  1917. are only

  1918. seemingly

  1919. contradictory

  1920. in reality

  1921. they express

  1922. a profound

  1923. truth

  1924. and what

  1925. we see

  1926. in Jesus'

  1927. reaction

  1928. here is

  1929. one side

  1930. of that

  1931. and it

  1932. is real

  1933. there is

  1934. grief

  1935. in our

  1936. king

  1937. to see

  1938. people

  1939. lost

  1940. and perishing

  1941. without him

  1942. there is

  1943. grief

  1944. in our

  1945. king

  1946. for to

  1947. see

  1948. people

  1949. his own

  1950. subjects

  1951. refuse

  1952. peace

  1953. that he

  1954. is

  1955. extending

  1956. to

  1957. them

  1958. he

  1959. mourns

  1960. over

  1961. our

  1962. stubborn

  1963. refusal

  1964. to

  1965. follow

  1966. him

  1967. are

  1968. you

  1969. spurning

  1970. the

  1971. peace

  1972. that

  1973. he

  1974. is

  1975. offering

  1976. to

  1977. you

  1978. as a result

  1979. of this

  1980. Jesus

  1981. prophesies

  1982. of the

  1983. impending

  1984. judgment

  1985. of Jerusalem

  1986. in verses

  1987. 43 to

  1988. 44

  1989. for the

  1990. days

  1991. will come

  1992. upon you

  1993. when your

  1994. enemies

  1995. will set

  1996. up a

  1997. barricade

  1998. around you

  1999. and surround

  2000. you

  2001. and hem

  2002. you in

  2003. on every

  2004. side

  2005. and tear

  2006. you down

  2007. to the

  2008. ground

  2009. you and

  2010. your children

  2011. within you

  2012. and they

  2013. will not

  2014. leave one

  2015. stone

  2016. upon

  2017. another

  2018. in you

  2019. because you

  2020. did not

  2021. know the

  2022. time of

  2023. your

  2024. visitation

  2025. these

  2026. images

  2027. of

  2028. besiegement

  2029. death

  2030. of

  2031. children

  2032. and

  2033. destruction

  2034. of the

  2035. city

  2036. are all

  2037. taken

  2038. from

  2039. various

  2040. Old

  2041. Testament

  2042. prophecies

  2043. about

  2044. God's

  2045. judgment

  2046. and the

  2047. punishment

  2048. of his

  2049. people

  2050. punishment

  2051. of his

  2052. rebellious

  2053. people

  2054. and these

  2055. prophecies

  2056. were fulfilled

  2057. around

  2058. 37 years

  2059. later

  2060. in 70

  2061. AD

  2062. by what

  2063. came to

  2064. be known

  2065. in history

  2066. as the

  2067. siege

  2068. of

  2069. Jerusalem

  2070. the

  2071. Jews

  2072. had

  2073. rebelled

  2074. against

  2075. the Roman

  2076. Empire

  2077. in 66

  2078. AD

  2079. and in

  2080. 70

  2081. AD

  2082. Emperor

  2083. Vespasian

  2084. besieged

  2085. Jerusalem

  2086. and eventually

  2087. destroyed both

  2088. the Jewish

  2089. temple

  2090. and the

  2091. city

  2092. the people

  2093. of Jerusalem

  2094. refused to

  2095. accept Jesus

  2096. as their

  2097. king

  2098. when he

  2099. visited

  2100. them

  2101. and as a

  2102. result

  2103. 37 years

  2104. later

  2105. they're

  2106. visited

  2107. by

  2108. another

  2109. king

  2110. the Roman

  2111. king

  2112. and destroyed

  2113. by him

  2114. but that's

  2115. only temporal

  2116. judgment

  2117. for the

  2118. people

  2119. of

  2120. Jerusalem

  2121. those

  2122. who

  2123. refuse

  2124. to

  2125. submit

  2126. to

  2127. Christ

  2128. will

  2129. face

  2130. eternal

  2131. judgment

  2132. in the

  2133. afterlife

  2134. as well

  2135. Jesus

  2136. spoke of

  2137. this

  2138. briefly

  2139. in the

  2140. preceding

  2141. parable

  2142. of

  2143. chapter

  2144. 19

  2145. verses

  2146. 11

  2147. to

  2148. 27

  2149. which

  2150. we

  2151. talked

  2152. about

  2153. last

  2154. week

  2155. there

  2156. he

  2157. compared

  2158. himself

  2159. to

  2160. a

  2161. noble

  2162. man

  2163. who

  2164. must

  2165. travel

  2166. to a

  2167. far

  2168. country

  2169. to

  2170. receive

  2171. a

  2172. kingdom

  2173. and

  2174. then

  2175. return

  2176. and

  2177. during

  2178. his

  2182. of

  2183. the

  2184. nobleman's

  2185. candidacy

  2186. for

  2187. kingship

  2188. and

  2189. then

  2190. sent

  2191. a

  2192. delegation

  2193. after

  2194. him

  2195. to

  2196. protest

  2197. to

  2198. the

  2199. king

  2200. the

  2201. controlling

  2202. king

  2203. that's

  2204. appointing

  2205. him

  2206. as

  2207. a

  2209. regent

  2210. that

  2211. he's

  2212. not

  2213. fit

  2214. for

  2215. kingship

  2216. and

  2217. then

  2218. after

  2219. he did

  2220. receive

  2221. the

  2222. kingship

  2223. and

  2224. returned

  2225. Jesus

  2226. he said

  2227. in

  2228. verse

  2229. 27

  2230. but

  2231. ask

  2232. for

  2233. these

  2234. enemies

  2235. of

  2236. mine

  2237. who

  2238. did

  2239. not

  2240. want

  2241. me

  2242. to

  2243. reign

  2244. over

  2245. them

  2246. bring

  2247. them

  2248. here

  2249. and

  2250. slaughter

  2251. them

  2252. before

  2253. me

  2254. citizens

  2255. who

  2256. rebel

  2257. against

  2258. their

  2259. king

  2260. are

  2261. no

  2262. longer

  2263. worthy

  2264. to

  2265. be

  2266. called

  2267. citizens

  2268. they

  2269. have

  2270. committed

  2271. treason

  2272. now

  2273. they

  2274. are

  2275. enemies

  2276. of

  2277. the

  2278. king

  2279. a

  2280. time

  2281. of

  2282. reckoning

  2283. is

  2284. coming

  2285. to

  2286. all

  2287. of

  2288. us

  2289. and

  2290. all

  2291. of

  2292. us

  2293. who

  2294. refuse

  2295. to

  2296. submit

  2297. to

  2298. Christ

  2299. as

  2300. our

  2301. Lord

  2302. will

  2303. be

  2304. treated

  2305. as

  2306. treasonous

  2307. enemies

  2308. when

  2309. Christ

  2310. returns

  2311. from

  2312. heaven

  2313. to

  2314. fully

  2315. establish

  2316. the

  2317. kingdom

  2318. of

  2319. God

  2320. and

  2321. this

  2322. is

  2323. necessary

  2324. you

  2325. cannot

  2326. rule

  2327. there

  2328. cannot

  2329. be

  2330. peace

  2331. in

  2332. a

  2333. kingdom

  2334. when

  2335. there

  2336. are

  2337. rebels

  2338. and

  2339. treason

  2340. it's

  2341. necessary

  2342. because

  2343. if

  2344. Christ

  2345. is

  2346. to

  2347. rule

  2348. rebels

  2349. must

  2350. be

  2351. eliminated

  2352. but

  2353. Christ

  2354. has

  2355. not

  2356. yet

  2357. returned

  2358. with

  2359. the

  2360. fullness

  2361. of

  2362. his

  2363. kingdom

  2364. he

  2365. is

  2366. still

  2367. in

  2368. the

  2369. far

  2370. country

  2371. so to

  2372. speak

  2373. and

  2374. he

  2375. is

  2376. biding

  2377. his

  2378. time

  2379. with

  2380. patient

  2381. endurance

  2382. because

  2383. in

  2384. his

  2385. first

  2386. visitation

  2387. which

  2388. is

  2389. what

  2390. we're

  2391. seeing

  2392. here

  2393. in

  2394. Luke

  2395. Jesus

  2396. came

  2397. in

  2398. grace

  2399. to

  2400. save

  2401. sinners

  2402. he

  2403. he

  2404. he

  2405. he

  2406. was

  2407. in

  2408. full

  2409. control

  2410. of

  2411. the

  2412. series

  2413. of

  2414. events

  2415. that

  2416. led

  2417. to

  2418. his

  2419. crucifixion

  2420. in

  2421. Jerusalem

  2422. he

  2423. went

  2424. nonetheless

  2425. so that

  2426. he

  2427. might

  2428. die

  2429. for

  2430. the

  2431. sins

  2432. of

  2433. those

  2434. who

  2435. will

  2436. trust

  2437. him

  2438. and

  2439. so that

  2440. he

  2441. might

  2442. be

  2443. raised

  2444. from

  2445. the

  2446. dead

  2447. by

  2448. his

  2449. heavenly

  2450. father

  2451. so that

  2452. he

  2453. could

  2454. grant

  2455. eternal

  2456. life

  2457. and

  2458. victory

  2459. to

  2460. his

  2461. followers

  2462. and

  2463. it's

  2464. the

  2465. subjects

  2466. normally

  2467. the

  2468. subjects

  2469. and the

  2470. citizens

  2471. of the

  2472. kingdom

  2473. but

  2474. in

  2475. this

  2476. case

  2477. our

  2478. king

  2479. gave

  2480. his

  2481. life

  2482. to

  2483. redeem

  2484. our

  2485. insignificant

  2486. lives

  2487. by

  2488. comparison

  2489. he

  2490. was

  2491. the

  2492. perfect

  2493. righteous

  2494. son

  2495. of

  2496. God

  2497. but

  2498. he

  2499. was

  2500. punished

  2501. for

  2502. our

  2503. rebellion

  2504. and

  2505. sinfulness

  2506. that

  2507. we

  2508. can

  2509. be

  2510. now

  2511. reconciled

  2512. to

  2513. God

  2514. through

  2515. Jesus

  2516. and

  2517. adopted

  2518. into

  2519. his

  2520. family

  2521. that's

  2522. the

  2523. good

  2524. news

  2525. of

  2526. Jesus

  2527. his

  2528. first

  2529. visitation

  2530. Jesus

  2531. comes

  2532. in

  2533. grace

  2534. to

  2535. save

  2536. after

  2537. his

  2538. resurrection

  2539. Jesus

  2540. ascended

  2541. to

  2542. heaven

  2543. to

  2544. reign

  2545. at

  2546. his

  2547. father's

  2548. right

  2549. hand

  2550. and

  2551. he

  2552. promised

  2553. to

  2554. return

  2555. to

  2556. bring

  2557. about

  2558. the

  2559. fullness

  2560. of

  2561. the

  2562. kingdom

  2563. of

  2564. God

  2565. and

  2566. in

  2567. that

  2568. second

  2569. visitation

  2570. Jesus

  2571. comes

  2572. in

  2573. glory

  2574. to

  2575. judge

  2576. the

  2577. time

  2578. to

  2579. accept

  2580. Jesus

  2581. offer

  2582. of

  2583. peace

  2584. will

  2585. be

  2587. we

  2589. now

  2590. a

  2591. people

  2592. who

  2593. are

  2594. living

  2595. between

  2596. Christ's

  2597. two

  2598. visitations

  2599. and the

  2600. same

  2602. that's

  2603. faced

  2604. the
