  1. We're in Psalm 119, verses 97 to 104.

    Psalms 119:97–104

  2. It's the main...

  3. Psalm 119, 97 to 104.

  4. Oh, how I love your law.

  5. It is my meditation all the day.

  6. Your commandment makes me wiser than my enemies,

  7. for it is ever with me.

  8. I have more understanding than all my teachers,

  9. for your testimonies are my meditation.

  10. I understand more than the aged,

  11. for I keep your precepts.

  12. I hold back my feet from every evil way

  13. in order to keep your word.

  14. I do not turn aside from your rules,

  15. for you have taught me.

  16. How sweet are your words to my taste,

  17. sweeter than honey to my mouth.

  18. Through your precepts, I get understanding.

  19. Therefore, I hate every false way.

  20. About 92%, they say, of Americans own at least one Bible.

  21. And they say that the average household has three Bibles.

  22. That's pretty crazy, huh?

  23. However, as George Gallup,

  24. he's the famous pollster,

  25. the Gallup polls are named after.

  26. He's probably the leading pollster on religion in the country.

  27. And the way he puts it is,

  28. we revere the Bible as a country,

  29. but we don't read it.

  30. We revere the Bible, we don't read it.

  31. And one of his surveys shows that

  32. fewer than half of the Americans

  33. can name the first book of the Bible,

  34. which I'm confident all of you can do.

  35. Only a third know who preached the Sermon on the Mount.

  36. Many of the people named Billy Graham

  37. as the person who preached the Sermon on the Mount.

  38. And the quarter of the Americans who were surveyed

  39. don't even know what is celebrated on Easter,

  40. that they don't believe that that's the celebration

  41. of Jesus' resurrection from the dead.

  42. So biblical literacy has steadily declined,

  43. even while the percentage of people

  44. who are college educated has been going up steadily, right?

  45. It's tripled, really, actually, since 1935.

  46. But I agree with what Teddy Roosevelt,

  47. 26th president of the country, said.

  48. He said this,

  49. a thorough knowledge of the Bible

  50. is worth more than a college education.

  51. And Roosevelt was not a slouch academically.

  52. He went to Harvard for undergrad,

  53. went to Columbia for law school.

  54. Even during his presidential campaigns,

  55. he dedicated about three hours or more

  56. to reading and learning about a wide range of topics,

  57. including history and ornithology, of all things.

  58. And yet he believed, despite all of that,

  59. that a thorough knowledge of the Bible

  60. is worth more than a college education.

  61. And I think that squares with the teaching

  62. of Psalm 119, 97 to 104.

  63. I think the main point of this psalm

  64. is that as students in the school of God,

  65. we are to know God's word and keep it.

  66. And so first, it talks about,

  67. in the first four verses, knowing God's word.

  68. And then in the second half,

  69. it talks about keeping God's word.

  70. And so let's talk about knowing God's word first.

  71. The psalmist begins with an admiration of God's law

  72. in verse 97.

  73. Oh, how I love your law.

  74. It is my meditation all the day.

  75. I mean, I think this is a common human phenomenon.

  76. We think about the things we love.

  77. That's what our minds gravitate toward

  78. when we're kind of just, I guess,

  79. letting our minds drift.

  80. And likewise, the psalmist meditate on God's law

  81. all the day, it says,

  82. because he loved God's law.

  83. And so we all believe the scriptures,

  84. but do we all love the scriptures?

  85. Because that's where we find the mind of God, right?

  86. We hear the voice of God.

  87. There's a fourth century Christian bishop

  88. from Milan named Ambrose,

  89. and he put it this way.

  90. He says,

  91. as in paradise,

  92. in the Garden of Eden,

  93. as in paradise,

  94. God walks in the holy scriptures seeking man.

  95. Do we see scripture that way?

  96. That God is there to speak to us through it,

  97. and he is speaking us from it.

  98. And we love God's word because of that

  99. and think about it all the day.

  100. And the psalmist tells us

  101. why he loves God's word so much

  102. in verses 98 to verse 100.

  103. Your commandment makes me wiser than my enemies,

  104. for it is ever with me.

  105. I have more understanding than all my teachers,

  106. for your testimonies are my meditation.

  107. I understand more than the aged,

  108. for I keep your precepts.

  109. Three comparative sentences

  110. that talk about why he loves God's word so much.

  111. It's because God's word makes him wiser than his enemies,

  112. gives him more understanding than all his teachers,

  113. and makes him understand even more than the aged.

  114. It sounds a little bit arrogant

  115. if you just read that maybe out of context,

  116. but it's not arrogance in himself

  117. as much as he's boasting in God's word,

  118. the virtues of merits of God's word.

  119. And of course, it's assuming that the enemies

  120. and the teachers and the aged that are mentioned here

  121. do not know or keep God's word,

  122. like the psalmist is doing.

  123. Because if they were,

  124. obviously they would be wise also.

  125. Because scripture contains the wisdom of God,

  126. who is wiser than all the teachers and elders of this world.

  127. Knowing and keeping God's word

  128. makes us wiser than them all.

  129. And this refers to more than,

  130. and I think that's the knowledge that matters

  131. more than any other kind of knowledge.

  132. And it's referring to much more

  133. than just theoretical knowledge.

  134. Notice it says in verse 100,

  135. I understand more than the aged,

  136. for because I keep your precepts.

  137. In the way people usually talk about scriptures,

  138. we wouldn't expect the word keep

  139. to appear there in that sentence.

  140. You would more likely to read something like,

  141. I understand more than the aged,

  142. for I study your precepts.

  143. Right?

  144. But instead it says,

  145. I understand more than the aged,

  146. for I keep your precepts.

  147. And it's keeping God's word

  148. that has led him to an increased understanding

  149. of God and his word.

  150. So there is a kind of a practical

  151. and experiential aspect

  152. to understanding God's word.

  153. Just as, you know,

  154. mastering music theory

  155. doesn't by itself make you

  156. an accomplished musician.

  157. Right?

  158. And just like, you know,

  159. studying the mechanics

  160. of shooting a basketball,

  161. which I've done many times

  162. through YouTube,

  163. does not make me

  164. a good basketball player.

  165. Merely knowing the content

  166. of God's word likewise

  167. doesn't make us understand it.

  168. It doesn't,

  169. there's a kind of understanding

  170. that only comes through practice.

  171. Right?

  172. Just like you don't quite understand

  173. what it means to walk by faith,

  174. not by sight.

  175. Right?

  176. Until you do it.

  177. Until you walk by faith.

  178. Until you,

  179. in spite of what you see,

  180. live by faith.

  181. As it says in 2 Corinthians 5, 7.

  182. And so it says in John 13, 17,

  183. if you know these things,

  184. blessed are you if you do them.

  185. So as students in the school of God,

  186. we are to know God's word

  187. and keep it.

  188. And from there,

  189. the psalmist pivots

  190. using verse 100

  191. to speak about keeping God's word

  192. in verses 101 to 104.

  193. And it says there,

  194. I hold back my feet

  195. from every evil way

  196. in order to keep your word.

  197. I do not turn aside from your rules,

  198. for you have taught me.

  199. The psalmist keeps away

  200. from every evil way

  201. in order to keep God's word.

  202. Because God's word contains

  203. no evil,

  204. no falsity,

  205. in order to keep it,

  206. we must hold back our feet

  207. from every evil way.

  208. And it says that he does not

  209. turn aside from the rules

  210. God has taught him.

  211. So he doesn't stray

  212. to the left or to the right.

  213. He stays right on the path

  214. of God's rules.

  215. And then he continues

  216. in verse 103,

  217. how sweet are your words

  218. to my taste,

  219. sweeter than honey

  220. to my mouth.

  221. Honey, I mean,

  222. we just had a whole bunch

  223. of candy for Halloween.

  224. Nowadays,

  225. there's a lot of things

  226. that are sweeter.

  227. When you think of something sweet,

  228. you don't necessarily

  229. think of honey, right?

  230. But back in the day,

  231. honey was a rare commodity.

  232. You can't just walk

  233. into a grocery store

  234. and get honey for cheap

  235. because people hadn't discovered

  236. yet how to crystallize sugar, right?

  237. That didn't happen

  238. until the fourth century.

  239. So honey was a coveted

  240. and rare sweetener

  241. that can be added

  242. to all kinds of food and drinks.

  243. And so now,

  244. even though nowadays

  245. we can imagine

  246. a lot of things

  247. we might rather have

  248. than honey,

  249. back then honey was like,

  250. that's the sweet stuff, right?

  251. That's what you want,

  252. like, you know,

  253. to add to your food.

  254. And the psalmist is saying,

  255. using that as an analogy,

  256. saying that God's word

  257. tastes sweeter than honey.

  258. And it's such an intimate metaphor,

  259. right?

  260. Tasting something,

  261. taste and see that the Lord is good,

  262. Psalm 34.

  263. It's more intimate

  264. and personal

  265. than like any of our other

  266. sensory perceptions.

  267. It's like,

  268. not like seeing

  269. or touching

  270. or even smelling, right?

  271. Those are all things

  272. that are external to us, right?

  273. Yet tasting,

  274. it involves ingesting.

  275. It becomes a part of you, right?

  276. It's,

  277. and that's how intimately

  278. the psalmist is acquainted

  279. with God's word.

  280. He knows the sweet taste

  281. of scripture.

  282. And I think that's the key

  283. to keeping God's word.

  284. In his book,

  285. Desiring God,

  286. John Piper,

  287. writes about it this way.

  288. He says,

  289. I know of no other way

  290. to triumph over sin long term

  291. than to gain a distaste for it

  292. because of a superior satisfaction

  293. in God.

  294. Right?

  295. We develop a distaste for sin

  296. by savoring the sweet taste

  297. of God's word,

  298. by knowing it

  299. and keeping it.

  300. And then verse 104

  301. concludes this stanza

  302. by bringing it full circle.

  303. It began in verse 97

  304. with the declaration,

  305. Oh, how I love your law.

  306. And then it ends

  307. with the declaration,

  308. I hate every false way.

  309. So if you love

  310. the way of God's law,

  311. you hate every other way

  312. that contradicts it, right?

  313. As students in the school of God,

  314. we are to know

  315. God's word and keep it.

  316. And when we devote our lives

  317. to knowing and keeping

  318. God's word,

  319. cover to cover,

  320. without fail,

  321. it brings us to Jesus.

  322. It brings us to Jesus Christ

  323. because He is the incarnate Word

  324. to whom the inscripturated Word,

  325. the written Word,

  326. bears witness.

  327. And it says in 1 Corinthians 1,

  328. 18 to 24,

  329. For the word of the cross

  330. is folly to those

  331. who are perishing,

  332. but to us who are being saved,

  333. it is the power of God.

  334. For it is written,

  335. I will destroy the wisdom

  336. of the wise,

  337. and the discernment

  338. of the discerning

  339. I will thwart.

  340. Where is the one

  341. who is wise?

  342. Where is the scribe?

  343. Where is the debater

  344. of this age?

  345. Has not God made foolish

  346. the wisdom of the world?

  347. For since in the wisdom of God

  348. the world did not know God

  349. through wisdom,

  350. it pleased God

  351. through the folly

  352. of what we preach

  353. to save those who believe.

  354. For Jews demand signs

  355. and Greeks seek wisdom,

  356. but we preach Christ crucified,

  357. a stumbling block to Jews

  358. and folly to Gentiles,

  359. but to those who are called,

  360. both Jews and Greeks,

  361. Christ the power of God

  362. and the wisdom of God.

  363. For the foolishness of God

  364. is wiser than men,

  365. and the weakness of God

  366. is stronger than men.

  367. This really echoes

  368. the spirit of this stanza

  369. of Psalm 119.

  370. The word of Christ

  371. stumps the wise

  372. and the discerning

  373. of this world.

  374. It makes us wiser

  375. than our enemies,

  376. even though they might see it

  377. as foolishness.

  378. It makes us,

  379. the gospel of Jesus Christ,

  380. the word of Christ,

  381. makes us wiser

  382. than our enemies,

  383. more learned

  384. than our teachers,

  385. and more understanding

  386. than even the aged.

  387. Because it's the wisdom

  388. that no man could have imagined

  389. or foreseen,

  390. that the Son of God

  391. would become

  392. the Son of Man

  393. to make sons of men

  394. like the sons of God.

  395. That the Holy One

  396. would die for sinful ones

  397. to make them saints,

  398. holy,

  399. and set apart for God.

  400. In the person and work

  401. of Jesus Christ

  402. and His life,

  403. death,

  404. and resurrection,

  405. we see the fulfillment

  406. of this psalm.

  407. And it's as we believe

  408. in the word of Christ,

  409. in the gospel,

  410. and live in accordance

  411. with it,

  412. that we taste

  413. the sweetness of God

  414. and develop a distaste

  415. for the bitterness of sin.
