  1. Luke 21, verses 5 to 38.

    Luke 21:5–38

  2. And while some were speaking of the temple, how it was adorned with noble stones and offerings,

  3. he said, ask for these things that you see.

  4. The days will come and will not be left here one stone upon another that will not be thrown down.

  5. And they asked him, teacher, when will these things be?

  6. And what will be the sign when these things are about to take place?

  7. And he said, see that you are not led astray.

  8. For many will come in my name saying, I am he.

  9. And the time is at hand.

  10. Do not go after them.

  11. And when you hear of wars and tumults, do not be terrified.

  12. For these things must first take place.

  13. But the end will not be at once.

  14. Then he said to them, nation will rise against nation and kingdom against kingdom.

  15. There will be great earthquakes and in various places famines and pestilences.

  16. And there will be terrors and great signs from heaven.

  17. But before all this, they will lay their hands on you and persecute you,

  18. delivering you up to the synagogues and prisons.

  19. And you will be the same governors for my name's sake.

  20. This will be your opportunity to bear witness.

  21. Settle it therefore in your minds not to meditate beforehand how to answer.

  22. For I will give you a mouth and wisdom which none of your adversaries will be able to withstand or contradict.

  23. You will be delivered up even by parents and brothers and relatives and friends.

  24. And some of you they will put to death.

  25. You will be hated by all for my name's sake.

  26. But not a hair of your head will perish.

  27. By your endurance you will gain your lives.

  28. But when you see Jerusalem surrounded by armies,

  29. then know that its desolation has come near.

  30. Then let those who are in Judea flee to the mountains,

  31. and let those who are inside the city depart.

  32. And let not those who are out in the country enter it.

  33. For these are days of vengeance to fulfill all that is written.

  34. Alas, for women who are pregnant and for those who are nursing infants in those days.

  35. For there will be great distress upon the earth and wrath against this people.

  36. They will fall by the edge of the sword and be led captive among all nations.

  37. And Jerusalem will be trampled underfoot by the Gentiles

  38. until the times of the Gentiles are fulfilled.

  39. And there will be signs in sun and moon and stars

  40. and on the earth distress of nations in perplexity

  41. because of the roaring of the sea and the waves.

  42. People fainting with fear and with foreboding of what is coming on the world.

  43. For the powers of the heavens will be shaken.

  44. And when they will see the Son of Man,

  45. and then they will see the Son of Man coming in a cloud with power and great glory.

  46. Now when these things begin to take place,

  47. straighten up and raise your heads

  48. because your redemption is drawing near.

  49. And he told them a parable.

  50. Look at the fig tree and all the trees.

  51. As soon as they come out in leaf,

  52. you see for yourselves and know that the summer is already near.

  53. So also, when you see these things taking place,

  54. you know that the kingdom of God is near.

  55. Truly I say to you,

  56. this generation will not pass away until all has taken place.

  57. Heaven and earth will pass away,

  58. but my words will not pass away.

  59. But watch yourselves,

  60. lest your hearts be weighed down with dissipation and drunkenness and cares of this life.

  61. And that day come upon you suddenly like a trap.

  62. For it will come upon all who dwell on the face of the earth.

  63. Face of the whole earth.

  64. But stay awake at all times,

  65. praying that you may have strength to escape all these things that are going to take place

  66. and to stand before the Son of Man.

  67. And every day he was teaching in the temple,

  68. but at night he went out and lodged on a mountain called Olivet.

  69. And early in the morning all the people came to him in the temple to hear him.

  70. This is God's holy and authoritative word.

  71. Hopefully he won't cut in and out anymore.

  72. Jesus has been up to this point teaching every day in the temple.

  73. And ever since he entered Jerusalem at chapter 19.

  74. And some of the people that were with him were beginning to marvel at the temple,

  75. how beautiful it is, how magnificent it is.

  76. It says verse 5,

  77. They were speaking of the temple,

  78. how it was adorned with noble stones and offerings.

  79. And that spurs Jesus then to talk about how the temple will soon be destroyed

  80. and how that is connected to the coming of the end times.

  81. And so Jesus then goes on to teach more generally about the ultimate end times that is coming as well.

  82. And his main point here for us to learn is that we should bear enduring witness to Christ,

  83. watchfully waiting for his return and our redemption.

  84. And usually I have two or three points, but because of the,

  85. not all the points are very long.

  86. So bear with me.

  87. I'll talk about the destruction of the temple,

  88. the persecution of believers,

  89. fall of Jerusalem,

  90. disruptions in heaven and earth.

  91. These are all things that will precede the return of Christ.

  92. And so the exhortation to us,

  93. it finally is to be watchful.

  94. And the people were marveling at the temple.

  95. And this temple,

  96. the Jewish temple that they're marveling at,

  97. is not the first Jewish temple.

  98. The first,

  99. the original temple that Solomon built

  100. was destroyed by Nebuchadnezzar's Babylonian army in 586 BC.

  101. We see that in 2 Kings 25 and Jeremiah 52.

  102. A second temple built was built to replace that.

  103. It was built by the returning Jewish exiles from the Babylonian exile in 516 BC.

  104. It was led by Ezra and Nehemiah and Zerubbabel.

  105. But it says in Ezra chapter three,

  106. verse 12,

  107. that many of the priests and Levites and heads of father's houses,

  108. old men who had seen the first house,

  109. wept with a loud voice when they saw the foundation of this house being laid.

  110. Because compared to the first temple,

  111. the second temple was so shoddy and insignificant,

  112. they wept at the sight of it being erected.

  113. But when Herod I became the Roman king of Judea,

  114. ruling at the behest of the Roman emperor over the Jewish people in Judea,

  115. in the first century BC,

  116. he engaged in a lot of building projects to kind of showcase his greatness.

  117. And one of those projects was a complete refurbishment of the second temple.

  118. He overhauled it from top to bottom,

  119. building new foundation walls and enlarging the temple area by about 200,000 square yards,

  120. about twice the size of the original second temple,

  121. size of 30 football fields,

  122. to about 200,000 square yards.

  123. And this construction took over 80 years,

  124. and it was still ongoing,

  125. but still a lot of it was done by the time Jesus was ministering.

  126. It was undoubtedly an impressive structure,

  127. and so people are marveling at how it was adorned with noble stones,

  128. good quality stones,

  129. and offerings,

  130. which is a reference to ornaments of the temple dedicated to God,

  131. including like the gold-plated gates and such.

  132. And the first century Roman historian Tacitus described this temple as immensely opulent.

  133. Archaeologists have found stones that are 42 feet long,

  134. 11 feet high,

  135. and 14 feet deep,

  136. weighing over a million pounds that were used in the construction of this temple.

  137. These massive stones,

  138. if the temple were still,

  139. if the second temple were still intact,

  140. if it were still there,

  141. it would be more massive,

  142. these stones that were used,

  143. than any other ancient temple that existed.

  144. Now, the ornaments were similarly extravagant.

  145. First century Jewish historian Josephus writes that the gate opening into the temple

  146. was completely overlaid with gold,

  147. as was the whole wall around it.

  148. It had above it golden vines from which hung grape clusters as tall as a man,

  149. and it had golden doors 55 cubits high and 16 broad.

  150. Before these hung a veil of equal length of Babylonian tapestry

  151. with embroidery of blue and fine linen,

  152. of scarlet also,

  153. and of purple,

  154. wrought with marvelous skill.

  155. It had columns that rose 40 feet high,

  156. and they were so thick that Josephus reports that it took three grown men

  157. to try to stretch out their arms in order to get around it.

  158. So imagine columns like the giant sequoias of the redwood forests.

  159. If the temple still stood today,

  160. we would be in awe of it,

  161. we'd take pictures of it.

  162. But Jesus is not impressed.

  163. He says in verse 6,

  164. As for these things that you see,

  165. the days will come when there will not be left here

  166. one stone upon another

  167. that will not be thrown down.

  168. This is because,

  169. as Jesus said to these people in Luke 19.46,

  170. they had turned a house of prayer into a den of robbers,

  171. a hideout for people who do evil things

  172. outside of the temple in their own lives

  173. and then come to find refuge.

  174. Instead of a place to seek God,

  175. it had been reduced to a den of robbers.

  176. So Jesus,

  177. because they rejected the messianic king that God sent,

  178. Jesus pronounced that the temple will be destroyed.

  179. And so he tells them here,

  180. and as people,

  181. I think we tend to value these kinds of visible monuments

  182. and historical landmarks,

  183. but Jesus is telling us,

  184. reminding us,

  185. they don't last forever.

  186. Consider the Massachusetts State House,

  187. designed by the same architect

  188. that designed the White House

  189. with its gilded 23-carat gold dome,

  190. or consider the famed Faneuil Hall,

  191. indelibly etched into American history.

  192. Many of you are Harvard students.

  193. Consider Harvard's Memorial Hall

  194. with high arched ceilings,

  195. timber roof,

  196. decorated with these

  197. august portraits

  198. of important people

  199. and lighted by stained glass windows,

  200. or the Weiner's Library,

  201. which,

  202. according to a college guidebook,

  203. is colonnaded on its front

  204. by immense pillars

  205. with elaborate Corinthian capitals,

  206. all of which stand at the head

  207. of a flight of stairs

  208. that would not disgrace

  209. the capital in Washington.

  210. Or consider MIT's

  211. McLaurin Building,

  212. which forms a U

  213. around the grassy Killian Court,

  214. facing the beautiful Charles River,

  215. with an impressive colonnade facade,

  216. and topped by 100 feet wide

  217. great dome

  218. modeled after the great Parthenon of Rome.

  219. Consider all these things,

  220. their buildings,

  221. their illustrated history,

  222. their revered traditions,

  223. their unparalleled reputations,

  224. and yet God is not impressed.

  225. We think these things will last.

  226. But they don't last forever.

  227. The people who were with us

  228. are not impressed

  229. by the external grandeur

  230. of the Jewish temple,

  231. but Jesus tells them

  232. not to be impressed

  233. because it will not last.

  234. Remember what God said

  235. in Isaiah chapter 66,

    Isaiah 66:1–2

  236. verses 1 to 2,

  237. Heaven is my throne,

  238. and the earth is my footstool.

  239. What is the house

  240. that you would build for me?

  241. And what is the place of my rest?

  242. All these things my hand has made,

  243. and so all these things came to be,

  244. but this is the one to whom I will look,

  245. he who is humble,

  246. and contrite in spirit,

  247. and trembles at my word.

  248. That's what God ultimately cares about,

  249. about us.

  250. He doesn't need us to do anything for him.

  251. There's nothing we can do

  252. to make him more glorious

  253. than he already is.

  254. There's nothing we can give to him

  255. that he doesn't already own.

  256. If we really understand this truth,

  257. it will set us free

  258. from being captive to this world.

  259. All worldly fame and recognition,

  260. what school you went to,

  261. where you work,

  262. what your position is,

  263. how much you earn,

  264. all worldly riches,

  265. the car you drive,

  266. the house you live in,

  267. the clothes you wear,

  268. all worldly accomplishments,

  269. the degrees you hold,

  270. the patents you earn,

  271. the laws you pass,

  272. the problems you solve,

  273. and the buildings you design,

  274. these things do not endure forever.

  275. What God cares about

  276. is that you are of humble

  277. and contrite spirit,

  278. and that you tremble at his word.

  279. What God cares about

  280. is that you do all your work,

  281. all these things,

  282. not out for your own glory,

  283. not out of love for yourself,

  284. but out of love for him,

  285. that you study,

  286. write,

  287. code,

  288. build,

  289. and work for him

  290. in faith and obedience.

  291. That's what gets God's attention.

  292. A person who is inwardly humble,

  293. submitted to him,

  294. not things that are outwardly grandiose.

  295. And the people are so startled

  296. by Jesus' prophecy

  297. because the temple

  298. was the center of their worship.

  299. And so they ask him in verse 7,

  300. Teacher,

  301. when will these things be?

  302. And what will be the sign

  303. when these things

  304. are about to take place?

  305. The destruction of the temple

  306. would be the end of life

  307. as they know it,

  308. and it would portend for them

  309. the beginning of the end times

  310. and the coming

  311. of the kingdom of God.

  312. And so Jesus answers

  313. their question

  314. not only by speaking

  315. of the signs

  316. that lead up to

  317. the destruction of the temple

  318. and the fall of Jerusalem,

  319. but also more generally

  320. about the ultimate end,

  321. about his second coming.

  322. But before he talks

  323. about these signs,

  324. Jesus tells them about

  325. what are not signs,

  326. things that will happen

  327. before the fall of Jerusalem,

  328. but are not necessarily indicators

  329. that the end is about to come.

  330. He says in verses 8 to 9,

  331. See that you are not led astray,

  332. for many will come in my name,

  333. saying,

  334. I am he,

  335. and the time is at hand.

  336. Do not go after them,

  337. and when you hear of wars

  338. and tumults,

  339. do not be terrified,

  340. for these things

  341. must first take place,

  342. but the end

  343. will not be at once.

  344. There will be people

  345. that come claiming

  346. to be the Messiah,

  347. saying,

  348. I am he.

  349. There will be timetables given,

  350. saying that it is now the time,

  351. the end time has come.

  352. There will be false rumors

  353. about Messiahs.

  354. Likewise,

  355. there will also be rumors

  356. of war and tumults.

  357. He says,

  358. You will hear of wars

  359. and tumults.

  360. There will be rumblings of war

  361. all throughout the world,

  362. but we should not be terrified,

  363. for these things

  364. must first take place,

  365. but the end

  366. will not be at once.

  367. These rumors

  368. of the Messiah,

  369. rumors of wars

  370. and revolutions

  371. are par for the course

  372. after the time

  373. of Jesus' death

  374. and resurrection

  375. and ascension.

  376. They're not unusual events.

  377. They will characterize

  378. life after Jesus' ascension.

  379. These are not necessarily

  380. indicators

  381. that Christ's coming

  382. is imminent.

  383. We know of

  384. at least two

  385. Messianic pretenders

  386. that existed

  387. right after Jesus' time

  388. before the destruction

  389. of the temple

  390. in 70 AD.

  391. Those are recorded

  392. in Acts 5.36

  393. and Acts 21.38

  394. as well.

  395. So this really did happen.

  396. It was fulfilled.

  397. But until Christ returns,

  398. we need not be terrified

  399. because we are not living

  400. in the dark.

  401. We expect these things.

  402. And then Jesus gives us

  403. a summary statement

  404. in verses 10-11

  405. of the signs

  406. that will precede the end

  407. that there will be wars

  408. among nations

  409. and natural disasters

  410. and unusual phenomena

  411. in the sky and land.

  412. And then Jesus

  413. elaborates on these

  414. in the following passages.

  415. It kind of serves

  416. as a thesis statement

  417. for verses 20-26,

  418. verse 10 and verse 11 does.

  419. But before all of these

  420. designs will take place,

  421. Jesus says further

  422. in verse 12

  423. that there will be

  424. persecution of believers.

  425. That's my second point.

  426. They will lay their hands

  427. on you

  428. and persecute you,

  429. delivering you up

  430. to the synagogues

  431. and prisons.

  432. And you will be

  433. the things

  434. and governors

  435. for my name's sake.

  436. Persecution,

  437. according to Jesus,

  438. is not a sign

  439. that the end

  440. is imminent.

  441. Persecution,

  442. and here,

  443. followers of Christ,

  444. he says,

  445. will be delivered up

  446. to the synagogues

  447. and prisons,

  448. which suggests

  449. religious authorities.

  450. And also,

  451. we will be brought

  452. before kings

  453. and governors,

  454. which suggests

  455. civil authorities,

  456. political authorities.

  457. And all of this

  458. persecution will be,

  459. Jesus says,

  460. for my name's sake.

  461. This phrase

  462. is repeated twice

  463. in this passage,

  464. here in verse 12

  465. and later in verse 17.

  466. Already in Luke,

  467. John the Baptist

  468. has been imprisoned

  469. for bearing witness

  470. to Jesus.

  471. And other followers

  472. of Jesus

  473. are imprisoned

  474. in Luke's sequel

  475. in the book of Acts

  476. up to 16 times.

  477. And then,

  478. they testify

  479. before civil authorities

  480. on many occasions.

  481. And all of that happens

  482. because of Jesus,

  483. for the sake

  484. of Jesus' name.

  485. That phrase

  486. is repeated 17 times

  487. in the book of Acts.

  488. It shows the centrality

  489. of a Christian's

  490. allegiance to Jesus.

  491. That's what our lives

  492. are to be about.

  493. About the name of Jesus,

  494. advancing his name,

  495. we live for his sake

  496. and not our own.

  497. So if I were to ask you,

  498. is it obvious

  499. to those around you

  500. that you are living

  501. for Jesus' name's sake?

  502. Or are they more likely

  503. to conclude

  504. when they observe

  505. your life from the outside

  506. that you are living

  507. for your own sake?

  508. This is a question

  509. that we all need

  510. to ask ourselves

  511. because often

  512. the absence of persecution

  513. is a sign

  514. not of how principled

  515. and moral

  516. our society is,

  517. but of how impoverished

  518. our witness to Christ is.

  519. persecution is not

  520. out of the ordinary

  521. for the Christian.

  522. It's normal.

  523. It's to be expected

  524. in the life

  525. following Jesus' ascension.

  526. And Jesus says

  527. in verse 13,

  528. this will be

  529. your opportunity

  530. to bear witness.

  531. We will be persecuted

  532. for bearing witness

  533. to Jesus,

  534. but the persecution

  535. itself will provide

  536. further opportunities,

  537. a platform

  538. for bearing witness

  539. to Jesus

  540. because when people

  541. mock us for our faith,

  542. when people persecute us

  543. for our faith,

  544. when people bring us

  545. to public courts,

  546. we're being brought

  547. for the hearing

  548. of many.

  549. Our faith

  550. is becoming

  551. made an issue

  552. and gives us

  553. an opportunity

  554. to bear witness

  555. to Jesus

  556. and tell them

  557. about our faith

  558. and about the hope

  559. that we have

  560. in Jesus.

  561. And so it's

  562. an opportunity

  563. for witness.

  564. This is kind of

  565. really a radical way

  566. to think about it

  567. and look at it

  568. because if preserving

  569. ourselves

  570. or promoting

  571. ourselves

  572. is the primary

  573. goal of our lives,

  574. then persecution,

  575. of course,

  576. is undesirable.

  577. It's a setback.

  578. It's a disappointment.

  579. But if

  580. proclamation

  581. of Jesus,

  582. if promoting

  583. Christ

  584. is our ultimate

  585. goal in life,

  586. then persecution

  587. is not a setback

  588. or a disappointment.

  589. it's an opportunity,

  590. a golden chance

  591. to bear witness

  592. to Jesus

  593. and how precious

  594. he is to us.

  595. And he says

  596. we need not worry

  597. about persecution

  598. because it's not

  599. a threat to us.

  600. It's an opportunity

  601. and Jesus

  602. will teach us

  603. by his spirit

  604. what to say.

  605. He says in verses

  606. 14 to 15,

  607. settle it therefore

  608. in your minds

  609. not to meditate

  610. beforehand

  611. how to answer

  612. for I will give you

  613. a mouth and wisdom

  614. which none of your

  615. adversaries will be able

  616. to withstand

  617. or contradict.

  618. Jesus said something

  619. very similar earlier

  620. in Luke 12

    Luke 12:11–12

  621. verses 11 to 12

  622. when he said

  623. that when we're

  624. brought for trial

  625. to the religious

  626. authorities

  627. that we don't need

  628. to worry about

  629. defending ourselves

  630. or worry about

  631. what to say

  632. because he said

  633. therefore

  634. the Holy Spirit

  635. will teach you

  636. in that very hour

  637. what you ought to say.

  638. That's what Jesus

  639. is promising here.

  640. I will give you

  641. a mouth and wisdom

  642. and that phrase

  643. mouth and wisdom

  644. recalls

  645. Exodus chapter 4

    Exodus 4:10–12

  646. verses 10 to 12

  647. when God calls Moses

  648. to go to Egypt

  649. to deliver Israel

  650. from their captivity

  651. and this is

  652. Moses' excuse.

  653. He says

  654. O my Lord

  655. I am not eloquent

  656. either in the past

  657. or since

  658. you have spoken

  659. to your servant

  660. but I am slow

  661. of speech

  662. and of tongue

  663. but the Lord

  664. said to him

  665. who has made

  666. man's mouth

  667. who makes him

  668. mute

  669. or deaf

  670. or seeing

  671. or blind

  672. is it not I

  673. the Lord

  674. now therefore

  675. go

  676. and I will be

  677. with your mouth

  678. and teach you

  679. what you shall

  680. speak.

  681. God who created

  682. the human mouth

  683. God who is the

  684. embodiment of all

  685. wisdom

  686. will himself

  687. help you

  688. when you are

  689. being interrogated

  690. persecuted

  691. for the sake

  692. of Jesus' name.

  693. So you need not

  694. worry.

  695. God will teach you

  696. what to say

  697. and help you

  698. to say it.

  699. How many times

  700. have you

  701. given that excuse

  702. the same excuse

  703. that Moses has given

  704. for not bearing

  705. witness to Jesus?

  706. I'm not eloquent.

  707. I'm slow

  708. of speech.

  709. I don't have

  710. all the answers.

  711. When God

  712. gives you

  713. an opportunity

  714. to witness

  715. in that context

  716. you don't need

  717. to worry

  718. about being

  719. ridiculed

  720. persecuted

  721. mocked

  722. for your beliefs.

  723. When that happens

  724. when the opportunity

  725. comes

  726. Jesus himself

  727. the Lord God

  728. himself

  729. will give you

  730. a wisdom

  731. and a mouth

  732. to speak.

  733. And we see

  734. this fulfilled

  735. throughout the book

  736. of Acts.

  737. Jesus continues

  738. in verses 16

  739. and 17

  740. you'll be delivered

  741. up even by parents

  742. and brothers

  743. and relatives

  744. and friends

  745. and some of you

  746. they will put

  747. to death.

  748. You'll be hated

  749. by all for my

  750. namesake.

  751. In some cases

  752. followers of Jesus

  753. will even be

  754. betrayed

  755. by their parents

  756. brothers

  757. relatives

  758. and friends.

  759. some of them

  760. will be put

  761. to death.

  762. This shows

  763. what Luke

  764. has been saying

  765. over and over

  766. again throughout

  767. the gospel

  768. that our

  769. allegiance to

  770. Jesus

  771. must trump

  772. even our

  773. allegiance

  774. to our

  775. family members.

  776. We will be

  777. hated

  778. by many

  779. for his

  780. namesake.

  781. All I think

  782. here is

  783. hyperbolic

  784. all kinds

  785. of people

  786. will hate

  787. us

  788. because of

  789. our

  790. allegiance

  791. to Christ.

  792. But

  793. Jesus promises

  794. in verses

  795. 18 to 19

  796. not a

  797. hair

  798. of your

  799. head

  800. will

  801. perish.

  802. By your

  803. endurance

  804. you will

  805. gain

  806. your

  807. lives.

  808. A

  809. single

  810. strand

  811. of

  812. hair

  813. is

  814. really

  815. the most

  816. insignificant

  817. part of

  818. our

  819. bodies.

  820. We lose

  821. about

  822. hundred

  823. strands

  824. of

  825. hair

  826. per

  827. day.

  828. I

  829. know

  830. that's

  831. hard

  832. to

  833. believe

  834. but

  835. that's

  836. what

  837. they

  838. estimate.

  839. So

  840. saying

  841. not a

  842. hair

  843. of your

  844. head

  845. will

  846. perish

  847. is

  848. metaphorical.

  849. Jesus

  850. is

  851. saying

  852. here

  853. no

  854. harm

  855. will

  856. come

  857. upon

  858. you.

  859. Now

  860. if you're

  861. paying

  862. attention

  863. that should

  864. raise

  865. the

  866. question

  867. how

  868. can

  869. that

  870. be

  871. possibly

  872. the

  873. case?

  874. Didn't

  875. Jesus

  876. just

  877. say

  878. literally

  879. some

  880. of

  881. you

  882. they

  883. will

  884. put

  885. to

  886. death?

  887. That

  888. sounds

  889. like

  890. a little

  891. more

  892. than

  893. a

  894. hair

  895. to

  896. me.

  897. The

  898. context

  899. suggests

  900. here

  901. that

  902. Jesus

  903. is

  904. not

  905. speaking

  906. of

  907. temporal

  908. well-being

  909. but

  910. of

  911. our

  912. eternal

  913. well-being.

  914. It's

  915. similar

  916. to what

  917. Jesus

  918. says

  919. in

  920. Matthew

  921. 10

  922. 28

  923. do

  924. not

  925. fear

  926. those

  927. who

  928. kill

  929. the

  930. body

  931. but

  932. cannot

  933. kill

  934. the

  935. soul

  936. whether

  937. fear

  938. him

  939. who

  940. can

  941. destroy

  942. both

  943. soul

  944. and

  945. body

  946. in

  947. hell.

  948. Your

  949. soul

  950. God

  951. is

  952. saying

  953. which

  954. you

  955. have

  956. entrusted

  957. to

  958. me

  959. is

  960. in

  961. my

  962. sovereign

  963. hands

  964. and

  965. no

  966. one

  967. can

  968. touch

  969. you.

  970. Even

  971. your

  972. body

  973. they

  974. might

  975. kill

  976. but

  977. I

  978. will

  979. raise

  980. you

  981. up

  982. in

  983. a

  984. new

  985. glorious

  986. resurrection

  987. body

  988. in

  989. the

  990. end.

  991. So

  992. don't

  993. you

  994. fear

  995. them.

  996. Not

  997. a

  998. hair

  999. of

  1000. your

  1001. head

  1002. will

  1003. perish.

  1004. By

  1005. your

  1006. endurance

  1007. even

  1008. through

  1009. death

  1010. you

  1011. will

  1012. gain

  1013. your

  1014. lives.

  1015. The

  1016. word

  1017. life

  1018. there

  1019. lives

  1020. there

  1021. is

  1022. often

  1023. translated

  1024. soul.

  1025. It's

  1026. the

  1027. same

  1028. more

  1029. that

  1030. Jesus

  1031. used

  1032. in

  1033. Luke

  1034. 9

  1035. 23

  1036. 25

  1037. That's

  1038. the

  1039. saving

  1040. of

  1041. life

  1042. that

  1043. Jesus

  1044. is

  1045. talking

  1046. about.

  1047. Yes

  1048. you

  1049. might

  1050. die

  1051. for

  1052. his

  1053. name

  1054. sake

  1055. but

  1056. your

  1057. soul

  1058. will

  1059. be

  1060. well

  1061. you

  1062. will

  1063. be

  1064. preserved

  1065. to

  1066. the

  1067. end.

  1068. If

  1069. you

  1070. endure

  1071. through

  1072. persecution

  1073. not a

  1074. hair

  1075. of

  1076. your

  1077. head

  1078. will

  1079. perish.

  1080. Endurance

  1081. is a

  1082. Christian

  1083. virtue

  1084. that is

  1085. praised

  1086. often

  1087. throughout

  1088. the

  1089. New

  1090. Testament.

  1091. It

  1092. assumes

  1093. difficulty.

  1094. You

  1095. don't

  1096. endure

  1097. something

  1098. that's

  1099. easy.

  1100. Bearing

  1101. witness

  1102. to

  1103. Jesus

  1104. living

  1105. as a

  1106. Christian

  1107. will

  1108. not

  1109. come

  1110. easily.

  1111. It

  1112. requires

  1113. endurance,

  1114. perseverance.

  1115. It

  1116. will

  1117. come

  1118. with

  1119. its

  1120. own

  1121. share

  1122. of

  1123. suffering

  1124. and

  1125. persecution.

  1126. But

  1127. Jesus

  1128. teaching

  1129. us

  1130. here

  1131. that

  1132. it's

  1133. worth

  1134. it.

  1135. We

  1136. must

  1137. endure.

  1138. And

  1139. then in

  1140. verses

  1141. 20 to

  1142. 24

  1143. Jesus

  1144. returns

  1145. to the

  1146. topic

  1147. of

  1148. the

  1149. destruction

  1150. of

  1151. the

  1152. temple

  1153. and

  1154. the

  1155. fall

  1156. of

  1157. Jerusalem.

  1158. He

  1159. says

  1160. But

  1161. when you

  1162. see

  1163. Jerusalem

  1164. surrounded

  1165. by

  1166. armies

  1167. that

  1168. know

  1169. that

  1170. its

  1171. desolation

  1172. has

  1173. come

  1174. near.

  1175. Then

  1176. let

  1177. those

  1178. who

  1179. are

  1180. in

  1181. Judea

  1182. flee

  1183. to

  1184. the

  1185. mountains

  1186. and

  1187. let

  1188. those

  1189. who

  1190. are

  1191. inside

  1192. the

  1193. city

  1194. depart

  1195. and

  1196. let

  1197. not

  1198. those

  1199. who

  1200. are

  1201. out

  1202. in

  1203. the

  1204. country

  1205. enter

  1206. it

  1207. for

  1208. these

  1209. are

  1210. days

  1211. of

  1212. vengeance

  1213. to

  1214. fulfill

  1215. all

  1216. that

  1217. is

  1218. written

  1219. alas

  1220. for

  1221. women

  1222. who

  1223. are

  1224. pregnant

  1225. and

  1226. for

  1227. those

  1228. who

  1229. are

  1230. nursing

  1231. infants

  1232. in

  1233. those

  1234. days

  1235. for

  1236. there

  1237. will

  1238. be

  1239. great

  1240. distress

  1241. upon

  1242. the

  1243. earth

  1244. and

  1245. wrath

  1246. against

  1247. this

  1248. people

  1249. you

  1250. will

  1251. fall

  1252. by

  1253. the

  1254. edge

  1255. of

  1256. the

  1257. sword

  1258. and

  1259. be

  1260. led

  1261. captive

  1262. among

  1263. all

  1264. nations

  1265. the

  1266. siege

  1267. of

  1268. Jerusalem

  1269. will

  1270. bring

  1271. its

  1272. desolation

  1273. and

  1274. this

  1275. will

  1276. be

  1277. so

  1278. severe

  1279. Jesus

  1280. predicts

  1281. that

  1282. those

  1283. who

  1284. live

  1285. in

  1286. the

  1287. wider

  1288. region

  1289. around

  1290. the

  1291. city

  1292. should

  1293. depart

  1294. they

  1295. should

  1296. flee

  1297. into

  1298. the

  1299. mountains

  1300. those

  1301. who

  1302. are

  1303. inside

  1304. the

  1305. city

  1306. should

  1307. depart

  1308. and

  1309. leave

  1310. the

  1311. city

  1312. and

  1313. those

  1314. who

  1315. are

  1316. just

  1317. outside

  1318. the

  1319. city

  1320. in

  1321. the

  1322. country

  1323. should

  1324. not

  1325. enter

  1326. it

  1327. everyone

  1328. should

  1329. avoid

  1330. Jerusalem

  1331. because

  1332. that's

  1333. how

  1334. severe

  1335. the

  1336. judgment

  1337. will

  1338. be

  1339. because

  1340. and

  1341. this

  1342. was

  1343. fulfilled

  1344. in

  1345. 70

  1346. AD

  1347. in

  1348. 66

  1349. AD

  1350. the

  1351. Jewish

  1352. people

  1353. in

  1354. Jerusalem

  1355. they

  1356. rebelled

  1357. against

  1358. the

  1359. Roman

  1360. per

  1361. Vespasian

  1362. besieged

  1363. Jerusalem

  1364. and

  1365. eventually

  1386. by the

  1388. until

  1389. the

  1390. times

  1391. of

  1392. the

  1393. Gentiles

  1394. are

  1395. fulfilled

  1396. this

  1397. remark

  1398. in

  1399. verse

  1400. 24

  1401. shows

  1402. the

  1403. Gentile

  1404. predominance

  1405. in

  1406. the

  1407. age

  1408. that

  1409. continues

  1410. after

  1411. Jesus

  1412. ascension

  1413. and

  1414. that

  1415. will

  1416. be

  1417. the

  1419. until

  1420. the

  1422. of

  1423. the

  1424. Gentiles

  1425. are

  1426. fulfilled

  1427. that's

  1428. likely

  1429. related

  1430. to

  1431. the

  1432. idea

  1433. in

  1434. Genesis

    Genesis 48:19

  1435. 48

  1436. verse

  1437. 19

  1438. where

  1439. Jacob

  1440. also

  1441. named

  1442. Israel

  1443. places

  1444. his hands

  1445. on his

  1446. grandson

  1447. Ephraim

  1448. and he

  1449. blesses

  1450. him

  1451. and he

  1452. says

  1453. this

  1454. as he's

  1455. blessing

  1456. him

  1457. his

  1458. seed

  1459. would

  1460. become

  1461. the

  1462. fullness

  1463. of

  1464. the

  1465. nations

  1466. fullness

  1467. of

  1468. the

  1469. Gentiles

  1470. which

  1471. in

  1472. turn

  1473. is

  1474. related

  1475. to

  1476. God's

  1477. promise

  1478. to

  1479. Abraham

  1480. that

  1481. all

  1482. nations

  1483. all

  1484. peoples

  1485. will

  1486. be

  1487. blessed

  1488. and so

  1489. salvation

  1490. is from

  1491. the Jews

  1492. because it

  1493. comes

  1494. through

  1495. a

  1496. Jewish

  1497. Messiah

  1498. Jesus

  1499. Christ

  1500. many

  1501. of the

  1502. Jews

  1503. however

  1504. rejected

  1505. the

  1506. Messiah

  1507. and

  1508. their

  1509. hearts

  1510. were

  1511. hardened

  1512. leading to

  1513. Jerusalem's

  1514. destruction

  1515. but

  1516. Jesus

  1517. prophesies

  1518. here

  1519. that

  1520. a

  1521. time

  1522. is

  1523. coming

  1524. when

  1525. the

  1526. times

  1527. of

  1528. the

  1529. Gentiles

  1530. are

  1531. fulfilled

  1532. this

  1533. remark

  1534. seems

  1535. to

  1536. hold

  1537. out

  1538. hope

  1539. that

  1540. there

  1541. will

  1542. be

  1543. a

  1544. future

  1545. restoration

  1546. of

  1547. Israel

  1548. there

  1549. will

  1550. be

  1551. people

  1552. there

  1553. will

  1554. be

  1555. an

  1556. influx

  1557. of

  1558. Jews

  1559. that

  1560. come

  1561. to

  1562. faith

  1563. in

  1564. Jesus

  1565. Christ

  1566. Paul

  1567. is

  1568. likely

  1569. referring

  1570. to

  1571. this

  1572. as

  1574. in

  1575. Romans

    Romans 11:25

  1626. full

  1627. hardening

  1628. of

  1629. the

  1630. Jews

  1631. there's

  1632. a

  1633. partial

  1634. hardening

  1635. so

  1636. that

  1637. many

  1638. of

  1639. the

  1641. reject

  1642. Jesus

  1643. some

  1652. a

  1654. is

  1655. coming

  1656. when

  1657. that

  1659. will be

  1661. and

  1662. that

  1663. will

  1664. be

  1668. of

  1669. the

  1670. Gentiles

  1822. has

  1823. been

  1825. southeast

  1826. rather

  1827. than

  1828. northwest

  1829. so that

  1830. it's

  1831. now

  1832. in

  1833. Niger

  1834. Africa

  1835. it's

  1836. expected

  1849. it

  1856. full

  1857. circle

  1858. back

  1895. Christianity

  1896. has

  1907. Europe

  1908. the

  1909. United

  1910. States

  1911. in

  1912. South

  1913. America

  1914. and now

  1915. in

  1916. Africa

  1917. and

  1918. Asia

  1919. as

  1920. well

1921. it's the times of the Gentiles

  1922. is being fulfilled.

1923. All nations all over the ends

1924. of the ends of the earth

1925. are coming to faith in Jesus Christ

  1926. and now contrast that

  1927. with Islam.

1928. The center of gravity for Islam

1929. is now in the Middle East.

1930. It has always been in the Middle East.

  1931. Hinduism's center of gravity,

  1932. Buddhism's center of gravity

1933. have both always been in Asia

1934. now and at its inception.

1935. The gospel of Jesus Christ, however,

  1936. is for all nations.

  1937. He has always been,

1938. has always had an outward orientation.

  1939. It was God's intention

  1940. that through Israel,

1941. through the coming of the Jewish Messiah,

  1942. Jesus Christ,

  1943. that salvation would come

  1944. to all peoples.

1945. and this is why we as a church

1946. is part of the great mission of God

  1947. to evangelize the nations.

1948. That's why we pray for the nations

  1949. and the people groups.

1950. Because God intends for His good news

1951. to be heard among all the nations.

1952. We're still living in fulfillment

  1953. of this prophecy

1954. of what Jesus said in Acts 1.8.

1955. But you will receive power

1956. when the Holy Spirit comes upon you

1957. and you will be in Jerusalem

1958. and in all Judea and Samaria

1959. and to the end of the earth.

1960. That's why we should bear

  1961. enduring witness to Christ,

1962. watchfully waiting for His return

  1963. and our redemption.

1964. So having answered the question

1965. about the destruction of the temple

1966. and the fall of Jerusalem

  1967. and about the signs

  1968. that precede those events,

1969. Jesus now turns His attention

  1970. in verse 25

1971. to the signs of the ultimate end.

  1972. And this is because,

  1973. as I said before,

  1974. the destruction of Jerusalem

1975. and the destruction of the temple

  1976. is connected

  1977. to the Jewish perception

  1978. of the end times.

  1979. It signals

1980. the view of the end.

1981. That means the end is imminent.

1982. Not in the sense that,

  1983. you know,

1984. it's going to be next week

  1985. or next year,

1986. but in the sense that

1987. the hourglass has been turned over,

  1988. the clock is ticking.

  1989. It's impending.

1990. The end and Christ's return

  1991. is impending

1992. in the same way that

  1993. yours and my death

  1994. is impending.

1995. Not that we're going to die

  1996. next week.

  1997. We might.

  1998. We don't know that.

  1999. But that it's looming

  2000. and coming inevitably.

  2001. Time is ticking.

  2002. Our days are numbered.

2003. The finish line is visible.

2004. The end is in sight.

2005. And the destruction of the temple

2006. and the fall of Jerusalem

  2007. has marked that.

  2008. And this final end

  2009. will be preceded

  2010. by the following signs

  2011. in verses 25 to 26.

  2012. There will be signs

2013. in sun and moon and stars

  2014. and on the earth

  2015. distress of nations

  2016. in perplexity

  2017. because of the roaring

2018. of the sea and the waves.

  2019. People fainting with fear

  2020. and with foreboding

  2021. of what is coming

  2022. on the world

  2023. for the powers

  2024. of the heavens

  2025. will be shaken.

  2026. The nations

  2027. that were reigning

  2028. over the Jews

  2029. and over the world

  2030. will now experience distress

  2031. because of the roaring

2032. of the sea and the waves.

  2033. This is probably connected

  2034. to the great earthquakes

  2035. that were mentioned

  2036. earlier in verse 11.

2037. And there will be signs

2038. in sun, moon, and stars.

2039. The powers of the heavens

  2040. will be shaken.

  2041. This is connected

  2042. to the terrors

  2043. and great signs

  2044. from heaven

  2045. mentioned also

  2046. in verse 11.

  2047. We don't know

  2048. what these signs

  2049. entail exactly.

  2050. The details

2051. are not known to us.

  2052. But we know

  2053. that they will be

  2054. cosmic in scope

  2055. and we know

2056. that they will be terrifying

  2057. according to what

  2058. Jesus is describing here.

  2059. It will make people

  2060. faint with fear

  2061. and with foreboding

  2062. of what is coming

  2063. on the world.

  2064. It will make

  2065. normal people

  2066. not, you know,

  2067. very superstitious

  2068. and speculative people

  2069. that are always

2070. kind of a little bit

  2071. worried and

  2072. but it will make

  2073. normal people

  2074. fearful,

  2075. full of foreboding

  2076. for what is coming

  2077. to the world.

  2078. And only after

  2079. these signs

  2080. will Christ return.

  2081. It says in verses

  2082. 27 to 28,

  2083. and then they will

2084. see the Son of Man

  2085. coming in a cloud

  2086. with power

  2087. and great glory.

  2088. Now when these things

  2089. begin to take place,

  2090. straighten up

  2091. and raise your heads

  2092. because your redemption

  2093. is drawing near.

  2094. Jesus is here

  2095. making a direct allusion

  2096. to Daniel chapter 7

    Daniel 7:13–14

  2097. verses 13 to 14

  2098. where Daniel prophesied

  2099. that a man like,

2100. someone like a Son of Man

  2101. will come to God

2102. to the Ancient of Days

2103. and you will be given

  2104. dominion, glory

  2105. and a kingdom

  2106. and that all peoples

  2107. and nations

  2108. and language

  2109. should serve him.

  2110. And so,

  2111. I think when

  2112. this presence of God

  2113. coming in a cloud,

2114. I think when most people

  2115. think about it,

  2116. we imagine the

  2117. Renaissance pictures

  2118. that we've seen

  2119. of Jesus kind of

  2120. riding a cloud

  2121. like you're riding

  2122. on a longboard

  2123. or a skateboard.

  2124. You know,

  2125. it's like,

2126. but that's not what Luke

  2127. is talking about here.

  2128. It says that

2129. He comes in a cloud.

  2130. Right?

2131. This is the same language

  2132. that was used

  2133. in Luke 9,

  2134. 34-35.

  2135. When a cloud came

  2136. and overshadowed

  2137. Jesus and His disciples

  2138. and a voice came

  2139. out of the cloud

  2140. saying,

  2141. This is my Son,

  2142. my Chosen One.

  2143. Listen to Him.

  2144. So the cloud

2145. is not just a vehicle

  2146. for Jesus.

  2147. It's actually

  2148. a representation

  2149. of God's presence,

  2150. of Jesus'

  2151. divine presence.

  2152. Just like the

  2153. pillar of cloud

  2154. that represents Jesus

  2155. at the Exodus,

  2156. in Exodus 13,

  2157. a cloud here

  2158. signifies the presence

  2159. of God,

  2160. the revelation

  2161. of deity.

  2162. So Jesus then

  2163. is saying this,

  2164. right now He is

  2165. veiled in His glory.

2166. He's the Son of Man,

  2167. the Messianic King.

2168. But at His second coming

  2169. He will come

  2170. in His full

  2171. divine glory

  2172. and power

2173. as the Son of God.

  2174. And He will

  2175. ascertain

  2176. the nations.

  2177. So when these things,

  2178. the signs that Jesus

  2179. has spoken of,

  2180. begin to take place,

  2181. He instructs us

  2182. and His disciples,

  2183. straighten up,

  2184. raise your head,

  2185. because your redemption

  2186. is drawing near.

  2187. While the nations

  2188. and the kingdoms

  2189. are cowering

  2190. with fear

  2191. and foreboding

  2192. about what is coming

  2193. on the world,

2194. we are to straighten up

  2195. and raise our heads

  2196. confidently

  2197. because we know

  2198. exactly

  2199. what is coming

  2200. in the end.

2201. We are not a people

2202. who fear the end times.

  2203. We do not fear

  2204. doomsday.

  2205. We are people

  2206. who watchfully

  2207. wait for the end

  2208. because our redemption

  2209. is drawing near.

  2210. This is referring

  2211. not to our redemption

  2212. from sin,

  2213. which Jesus accomplished

  2214. through His life,

  2215. death,

  2216. and resurrection,

  2217. but to our redemption

  2218. from our sinful,

  2219. broken world

  2220. and the redemption

  2221. of our bodies.

  2222. Paul speaks of this

  2223. in Romans 8,

  2224. for the creation

  2225. waits with eager longing

  2226. for the revealing

2227. of the sons of God.

  2228. For the creation

  2229. was subjected

  2230. to futility,

  2231. not willingly,

  2232. but because of Him

  2233. who subjected it,

2234. in hope that the creation

2235. itself will be set free

  2236. from its bondage

  2237. to corruption

  2238. and obtain the freedom

  2239. of the glory

2240. of the children of God.

  2241. For we know

  2242. that the whole creation

  2243. has been groaning together

2244. in the pains of childbirth

  2245. until now.

2246. And not only the creation,

  2247. but we ourselves,

2248. who have the first fruits

  2249. of the Spirit,

  2250. groan inwardly

  2251. as we wait eagerly

  2252. for adoption as sons,

  2253. the redemption

  2254. of our bodies.

  2255. That's what all creation

  2256. longs for

  2257. because our creation

  2258. is fallen.

  2259. The brokenness

  2260. that we see

  2261. in the created order

  2262. is a result

  2263. of the fall.

  2264. It's been subjected

  2265. to futility

  2266. and will be redeemed

2267. just like our sinful flesh

  2268. is a result

  2269. of the fall.

  2270. And that too

  2271. will be redeemed.

  2272. Our bodies

  2273. will be redeemed.

  2274. And so we are

  2275. to be confident

  2276. and wait expectantly

  2277. for Jesus' return.

  2278. And that brings me

  2279. to my final point

  2280. which is the main

  2281. exhortation

  2282. of this passage.

  2283. Be watchful.

  2284. Jesus first tells

  2285. a parable

  2286. in verses 29 to 31.

2287. Look at the fig tree

  2288. and all the trees.

  2289. As soon as they

  2290. come out and leave

  2291. you see for yourselves

2292. and know that the summer

  2293. is already near.

2294. So also when you see

  2295. these things take place

2296. you know that the kingdom

  2297. of God is near.

2298. Fig trees were very common

  2299. trees in Palestine

  2300. and they are completely

  2301. bare in the winter.

  2302. So in the spring

  2303. when the leaves

  2304. begin to shoot out

  2305. the change

  2306. is quite dramatic

  2307. and obvious.

  2308. and so that's

  2309. the imagery

  2310. that Jesus is using

  2311. just like

  2312. the shooting

  2313. buds

  2314. in the leaves

  2315. in the spring

  2316. signals

  2317. the summer.

  2318. Jesus tells us

  2319. that we can discern

  2320. the nearness

2321. of the kingdom of God

  2322. by observing the signs

  2323. that he has just

  2324. told us about.

  2325. But look at what

  2326. Jesus says

  2327. so emphatically

  2328. in verses 32 to 33.

2329. Truly I say to you

  2330. this generation

  2331. will not pass away

2332. until all has taken place.

  2333. Heaven and earth

  2334. will pass away

  2335. but my words

  2336. will not pass away.

  2337. Three times

  2338. Jesus uses the word

  2339. pass away here

  2340. to emphasize

  2341. the certainty

  2342. of his teaching.

  2343. This generation

  2344. will not pass away

  2345. until these things

  2346. have taken place.

  2347. Heaven and earth

  2348. will pass away

  2349. but my words

  2350. will not pass away.

  2351. Even the thing

  2352. that seems so certain

  2353. to us

  2354. like heaven and earth

  2355. will pass away.

  2356. Seems so permanent

  2357. to us

  2358. but my words

  2359. Jesus' words

  2360. are more permanent

  2361. than that

  2362. more enduring

  2363. than that.

  2364. I don't think

  2365. Jesus means here

  2366. that he will return

  2367. in the lifetime

  2368. of his hearers

2369. if that's what he means

2370. he didn't keep his promise.

  2371. Rather I think

  2372. he's referring to

  2373. these things

  2374. that he mentions

  2375. in the preceding verse

  2376. in verse 31

  2377. in the lesson

  2378. of the fig tree.

  2379. And the phrase

  2380. these things

  2381. is repeated four times

  2382. in verses 5 to 9

  2383. and it refers there

  2384. consistently

  2385. to the destruction

  2386. of the temple

  2387. and the fall

  2388. of Jerusalem.

  2389. So Jesus is here

  2390. referring to the signs

  2391. that mark

  2392. the beginning

  2393. of the end

2394. and not to the end

  2395. itself.

2396. That's why he still says

  2397. the kingdom is near

  2398. when these signs come

  2399. not that the kingdom

  2400. is fully here.

  2401. Now verse 28

  2402. when these things

  2403. begin to take place

  2404. begin to take place

  2405. straighten up

  2406. and raise your head

  2407. because your redemption

  2408. is drawing near.

  2409. These things

  2410. will begin

  2411. to take place.

  2412. They will be fulfilled

  2413. in the lifetime

  2414. of Jesus' hearers

  2415. and that's exactly

  2416. what happened

  2417. in 70 AD.

  2418. And because

  2419. that was fulfilled

  2420. the return

  2421. of Christ

  2422. and the redemption

  2423. of our bodies

  2424. also will certainly

  2425. happen.

  2426. In fact

  2427. it's more certain

  2428. than the seeming

  2429. permanence

  2430. of the heavens

  2431. and the earth.

  2432. Jesus is teaching

  2433. us here

  2434. to make sure

  2435. we understand

  2436. and are aware

  2437. and expecting

  2438. the return of Christ

  2439. and living in light

  2440. of that reality.

  2441. And that prepares

  2442. his exhortation

  2443. in verses 34-35

  2444. but watch yourselves

  2445. lest your hearts

  2446. be weighed down

  2447. with dissipation

  2448. and drunkenness

2449. and cares of this life

  2450. and that day

  2451. come upon you

  2452. suddenly like a trap

  2453. for it will come

  2454. upon all who dwell

  2455. on the face

  2456. of the whole earth

  2457. but stay awake

  2458. at all times

  2459. praying that you

  2460. may have strength

  2461. to escape all these

  2462. things that are

  2463. going to take place

  2464. and to stand

2465. before the Son of Man.

  2466. Jesus brings

  2467. our attention

  2468. here

  2469. not to

  2470. millennialism

  2471. Zionism

  2472. Armageddon

  2473. rebuilding

  2474. the third temple

  2475. he doesn't give us

  2476. these details

  2477. he's not concerned

  2478. with them

  2479. what he's concerned

  2480. about here

  2481. is that these signs

  2482. that not so that

  2483. they would make us

  2484. always devoting ourselves

  2485. to pouring ourselves

  2486. over newspapers

  2487. and staring out

  2488. at observatories

  2489. in order to accurately

  2490. prognosticate the end

  2491. that's not his goal

  2492. his goal

  2493. in telling us

  2494. about these signs

  2495. is that we live

  2496. watchfully

  2497. and faithfully

  2498. that we bear

  2499. enduring witness

  2500. to Jesus

  2501. watchfully waiting

  2502. for his return

  2503. and for our redemption

  2504. so the word

  2505. dissipation

  2506. refers to

  2507. kind of a

  2508. drunken headache

  2509. a hangover

  2510. the result of

  2511. the intoxication

  2512. that he speaks of

  2513. here

  2514. drunkenness

  2515. Jesus warns us

2516. not to let our hearts

  2517. be weighed down

  2518. with dissipation

  2519. and drunkenness

  2520. and cares

  2521. of this life

  2522. too many people

  2523. in this world

  2524. live with a

  2525. spiritual hangover

  2526. because they are

  2527. drunk with the cares

  2528. of this life

  2529. with worldly concerns

  2530. it's such an

  2531. appropriate image

  2532. because a drunk

  2533. person

  2534. is unprepared

  2535. and unaware

  2536. and oblivious

  2537. incapable

  2538. of what it means

  2539. spiritually

  2540. to be weighed down

  2541. with dissipation

  2542. and drunkenness

  2543. and cares

  2544. of this life

  2545. maybe your life

  2546. is characterized

  2547. by a constant

  2548. pursuit of pleasure

  2549. you live for the

  2550. next drink

  2551. for the next

  2552. sexual conquest

  2553. for the next

  2554. high

  2555. and it doesn't

  2556. have to be

  2557. these

  2558. vices

  2559. your life

  2560. could also be

  2561. characterized more

  2562. by the ordinary

  2563. cares of this life

  2564. you're weighed down

  2565. with dissipation

  2566. by your next

  2567. exam

  2568. next project

  2569. your next

  2570. paycheck

  2571. your next job

  2572. your next

  2573. tv show

  2574. your next

  2575. sports game

  2576. your next

  2577. vacation

  2578. the ordinary

  2579. cares of this

  2580. life

  2581. can so

  2582. weigh us

  2583. down

  2584. with dissipation

  2585. intoxicate us

  2586. these things

  2587. these things

  2588. are dangerous

  2589. because they

  2590. are intoxicating

  2591. they seem so

  2592. ordinary

  2593. and so normal

  2594. and so harmless

  2595. but if they

  2596. steal us

  2597. from being

  2598. sensitive to

  2599. christ

  2600. and his

  2601. priorities

  2602. and purposes

  2603. in our lives

  2604. it's the same

  2605. effect as being

  2606. drunk on them

  2607. they're intoxicating

  2608. but what's the

  2609. point

  2610. i want to ask

  2611. you

  2612. dear brothers

  2613. and sisters

  2614. in the church

  2615. what's the

  2616. point of

  2617. enduring all

  2618. the suffering

  2619. in this life

  2620. fighting all

  2621. the battles

  2622. against sin

  2623. coming faithfully

  2624. ministering to

  2625. each other

  2626. speaking the

  2627. truth and

  2628. loving

  2629. what's the

  2630. point

  2631. of doing

  2632. all this

  2633. and enduring

  2634. this life

  2635. if we're not

  2636. waiting for

  2637. our bridegroom

  2638. we're not

  2639. prostitutes

  2640. used and

  2641. discarded

  2642. our bridegroom

  2643. is coming

  2644. he's preparing

  2645. us right now

  2646. for that

  2647. glorious day

  2648. of his

  2649. return

  2650. we are not

  2651. orphans

  2652. without father

  2653. we are not

  2654. citizens

  2655. without a

  2656. king

  2657. our king

  2658. is coming

  2659. back

  2660. that's why

  2661. we work

  2662. that's why

  2663. we pray

  2664. that's why

  2665. we persevere

  2666. that's why

  2667. we fight

  2668. the battle

  2669. of faith

  2670. every day

  2671. because we

  2672. wait for

  2673. him to

  2674. come back

  2675. to redeem

  2676. us

  2677. if that

  2678. doesn't

  2679. motivate your

  2680. brothers and

  2681. sisters

  2682. we're not

  2683. living as

  2684. we ought

  2685. to

  2686. it's going

  2687. to be

  2688. difficult

  2689. because we

  2690. live in a

  2691. world full

  2692. of distractions

  2693. and cares

  2694. it will be

  2695. difficult

  2696. because the

  2697. world is

  2698. full of

  2699. suffering and

  2700. turmoil

  2701. is ravaged

  2702. by war

  2703. and natural

  2704. disasters

  2705. this will be

  2706. difficult

  2707. bearing witness

  2708. to Jesus

  2709. and be

  2710. faithful to

  2711. him

  2712. will be

  2713. many false

  2714. messiahs and

  2715. false religions

  2716. that seek to

  2717. lead us astray

  2718. it will be

  2719. difficult because

  2720. we will be

  2721. persecuted by

  2722. religious authorities

  2723. civil authorities

  2724. some of us

  2725. will even be

  2726. betrayed by

  2727. our own

  2728. friends and

  2729. family

  2730. we could

  2731. never endure

  2732. these things

  2733. for the sake

  2734. of anyone else

  2735. in the world

  2736. or for the sake

  2737. of anyone else

  2738. in human history

2739. but we can do it

  2740. for Jesus'

  2741. sake

  2742. because he

  2743. was the man

  2744. of sorrows

  2745. who suffered

  2746. and died

  2747. in our place

  2748. on the cross

  2749. because he

  2750. was the true

  2751. messiah

  2752. that came

  2753. and laid

  2754. down his

  2755. life to

  2756. save us

  2757. and make

  2758. us born

  2759. again

  2760. because Jesus

  2761. was persecuted

  2762. by the religious

  2763. authorities

  2764. and the civil

  2765. authorities

  2766. for our

  2767. sake

  2768. because he

  2769. was mocked

  2770. by his

  2771. friends and

  2772. family

  2773. because he

  2774. died

  2775. and was

  2776. raised from

  2777. the dead

  2778. so that we

  2779. might enjoy

  2780. eternal

  2781. resurrection

  2782. life

  2783. and so

  2784. what we

  2785. would never

  2786. do for

  2787. anyone else

  2788. we do

  2789. for his

  2790. namesake

  2791. as it

  2792. says in

  2793. Hebrews 12

  2794. we read this

  2795. for our

  2796. assurance of

  2797. pardon today

  2798. therefore since

  2799. we are

  2800. surrounded by

  2801. so great

  2802. a cloud

  2803. of witnesses

  2804. let us

  2805. also lay

  2806. aside

  2807. every weight

  2808. and sin

  2809. which clings

  2810. so closely

  2811. and let us

  2812. run with

  2813. endurance

  2814. the race

  2815. that is set

  2816. before us

  2817. looking to

  2818. Jesus

  2819. the founder

  2820. and perfecter

  2821. of our faith

  2822. who for the

  2823. joy that was

  2824. set before

  2825. him

  2826. endured the

  2827. cross

  2828. despising the

  2829. shame

  2830. and is seated

  2831. at the right

  2832. hand of the

  2833. throne of

  2834. God

  2835. we can

  2836. endure because

  2837. Jesus endured

  2838. for us

  2839. because for the

  2840. joy set before

  2841. him of our

  2842. redemption

  2843. Jesus endured

  2844. the cross for

  2845. us

  2846. so let us

  2847. now for his

  2848. sake

  2849. bear enduring

  2850. witness to

  2851. Jesus

  2852. and be

  2853. watchful and

  2854. expectant for

  2855. his return

  2856. and

  2857. second

  2858. of

  2859. falling

  2860. to

  2861. guys

  2862. to

  2863. come on

  2864. and

  2865. just

  2866. do
