  1. Well, we've arrived the last chapter of our study in the book

  2. of 1st Samuel. And so I hope you have your

  3. Bibles because we are going to cover this verse by verse First

    1 Samuel 31 chapter mention

  4. Samuel chapter 31. Last week, you and I received a

  5. glimpse of David's life. A final glimpse of his life in

  6. this story and it was themed by repentance renewal restoration

  7. and that should encourage our hearts.

  8. Because as we come to the close of this book, we know that David

  9. was fully restored in his walk with the Lord, But the holy

  10. spirit before the curtain completely Falls and the lights

  11. turn off on this stage of this section of an epic, Redemptive

  12. portion of God's history and his work.

  13. In the world, we are going to get a glimpse of Saul's final

  14. moments of his life. Not in the same way of David

  15. because David is going to be reintroduced to us and second

  16. Samuel, but that is not the case for Saul.

  17. This chapter is where it all ends for the men.

  18. This is where we will never see him again.

  19. This is a detailed account of Saul the first king of Israel's

  20. death, And just like every other portion of scripture though it

  21. is a historical account, it still has so much to offer us

  22. regarding our own walk with the Lord, especially the life of

  23. Saul who lacked that walk with the Lord and it should cause us

  24. to cling to the Lord, all the more, when we see just what is

  25. possible. When we turn away from God, when

  26. we walk away from our King and we choose to be Sovereign over

  27. our own lives. It is a very very dangerous

  28. direction, that one would head in two.

  29. But I think it's fitting that. As we as we close this book

  30. tonight that we would just pray. Thank God and ask him to help us

  31. in the remainder versus here and then trust that he will speak to

  32. us as he has in the past few months.

  33. Can we pray together? Let's pray.

  34. God, we thank you for this book. Lord.

  35. We are so prone to forget all that we hear even even by

  36. tomorrow, we can forget what we hear but we ask that you would

  37. be so gracious to us and that these things would be etched on

  38. our hearts. Lord, write them on the tablet

  39. of our hearts. Let them be remembered.

  40. Let them make such an impression on us that it would change the

  41. course of Our Lives. Lord, we pray.

  42. Oh, how we need the presence of the Holy Spirit.

  43. How we need the power of God lord, we confess our weakness.

  44. We confess that a church service can be so dead, they can be so

  45. repulsive because it lacks your presence, Your Truth.

  46. Your love in our hearts, Lord, breathe.

  47. He's on us, a fresh breath of God.

  48. Breathe on us. You alone can make dry bones

  49. live again. You alone can bring a Reviving

  50. to our hearts. You alone can ignite a fire in

  51. our bosom. And we just ask that your word

  52. would do that. Because Jeremiah says, it is

  53. like a fire and Jeremiah says, it is like a hammer that smashes

  54. The Rock. Lord, we just pray that this

  55. Bible study would not become like an ordinary study, just a

  56. transfer of data, but no life Lord, let life be known here.

  57. We beg of you. We just pray that tonight would

  58. be a Monumental Not Just moment for this ministry but for our

  59. own lives, only you can do it. Only, you can do it.

  60. Lord, Jesus, in your name, we pray.

  61. Amen. Let's read verse 1.

  62. Now, the Philistines were fighting against Israel and the

  63. men of Israel fled before the Philistines, and fell slain on

  64. Mount gilboa and the Philistines overtook Saul and his sons and

  65. the Philistines struck down Jonathan and have been a dab and

  66. malky schewe, the sons of Saul the battle pressed hard against

  67. Saul and The Archers found him and he was badly wounded by The

  68. Archers, then saw said to his armor Bearer, draw your sword

  69. and thrust me through with it. Less these Um, sighs come and

  70. thrust me through and mistreat me.

  71. But his armor Bearer would not for he.

  72. Feared greatly there for Saul took his own sword and fell upon

  73. it. And when it's armour-bearer saw

  74. that saw was dead. He also fell upon his sword and

  75. died with him. Thus Saw died and his three sons

  76. and his armor Bearer and all his men on the same day together.

  77. There's so much that will be said that could be said, I would

  78. tell you ahead of time that we may not be able to cover all

  79. that these verses can offer and that is certainly true.

  80. When we revisit tax to the Holy Spirit, seems to bring new

  81. light. But look at verse one with me

  82. very quickly. This is what I take out of it.

  83. When there's a summary of what's happening in this verse now, the

  84. Philistines were fighting against Israel and the men of

  85. Israel fled before the Philistines and fell slain on

  86. melt gilboa. The first thing that my mind

  87. goes to and perhaps, Oops, your mind goes somewhere else is how

  88. David was planning to be a part of this war.

  89. It's almost Unthinkable that that righteous man was going to

  90. participate in this battle against his own people, that

  91. David was actually going to have blood on his hands because he

  92. would be associated with those who have killed the Lord's

  93. anointed and his sons and the people of Israel all together.

  94. It's just a horrific thought, but you've heard it so many

  95. times when we came to that study of where our hearts can take us,

  96. when we separate ourselves from God's Rule and law and his

  97. spirit Control over us. We can we can do unspeakable

  98. things. I can tell you that there are

  99. Christians who have done things, that even the world hasn't done

  100. because they have left the comfort of the Holy Spirit and

  101. his fear and even Paul have seen that.

  102. Remember, when Paul with the Corinthian Church?

  103. He says this is this is not even stuff that the world does in 1st

  104. Corinthians 5. He said, how are you guys even

  105. tolerating this in the world were the world would blush at

  106. this? And so, when I look at this, I

  107. not only think of what David could have been doing.

  108. I also think of God's mercy because the only reason why

  109. David is not participating in this activity is because God

  110. intervened with his love God. Providentially came in with his

  111. power and created a conflict so that when David was with the

  112. Philistines, the leader says you gotta get out of here.

  113. You have no right to be with us and you and I see it through the

  114. lens of God's power and control. And we recognize that was God

  115. that That was the Lord, making sure that David would not move

  116. forward in his sin and his sin. And you and I know something of

  117. God's mercy, the greatest manifestation of God's grace and

  118. our lives. The thing that has put a stop to

  119. us heading towards destruction on that Broad Road is the cross

  120. of Jesus Christ. And if we're thinking, what

  121. could have David done? If God had not intervened, what

  122. could have shame would he have brought to his name?

  123. What kind of what kind of consequences could have

  124. resulted? If he had participated in this

  125. war? Once you do something

  126. devotional, and ask yourself, where do you think you would be

  127. if you did not realize God's mercy in the cross of Jesus

  128. Christ, have you ever thought about that?

  129. Have you ever thought where you would be right now on a Friday

  130. night? If Jesus Christ didn't change

  131. your heart. Have you ever thought where you

  132. would be, what kind of decisions you would be making?

  133. What kind of consequences you would be living with if Christ

  134. did not come and flood your heart with the revelation of his

  135. love? I wonder My heart ever becomes

  136. dull. I tend to think about it.

  137. Lord, where would I be right now?

  138. In this very moment this hour, what would I be thinking?

  139. Who would be in my company? What would my decisions?

  140. Look like, what would what would my convictions be?

  141. What kind of scars would I have inherited?

  142. And David, if you were to ask him, where would you be apart

  143. from the grace of God? He would tell you, I probably

  144. would have such a wretch of a testimony because I would have

  145. been part of a great Act of treason and disgrace.

  146. And you, and I can think, and think often of how God's mercy

  147. has saved us from, so much save this from so much.

  148. But we read here in verse 2, before we recognize that Saul

  149. and learn of his death, we are told that his sons have died.

  150. Three of his sons have died. Jonathan have been a dab and

  151. malky schewe. Now here's the thing.

  152. I can understand Saul dying. To be honest, I don't really

  153. have much issue with it. That man, had it coming.

  154. All the blood that he shed his have died.

  155. Three of his sons that seems just That seems right that

  156. punishment would come with no repentance after so many chances

  157. you still resist, this makes sense but my heart is a little

  158. honest with you and I maybe it's true and it resonates with your

  159. own heart. Why his sons Why did they have

  160. to die the same death as their father?

  161. Now we could take a further and say abinadab malky.

  162. Sure, I don't know much about them.

  163. I'm going to make the conclusion that they were and full

  164. participation with their father that they were willing to join

  165. him on his quest to hunt for an innocent man.

  166. The Lord's anointed in David and so they had that coming to your

  167. Allegiance is with evil. You'll inherit evil that just

  168. makes sense. But oh Jonathan Precious

  169. Jonathan God-fearing. Jonathan humble, Jonathan.

  170. How can this man be numbered among the transgressors?

  171. How can this man be found on the same Hill bloodied and bruised

  172. and destroyed among the wicked? You know, what?

  173. Some people say, the popular interpretation of this.

  174. Is that God for saw the trouble? That would come if Jonathan had

  175. continued to live. In other words, there would have

  176. been a potential division in Israel.

  177. If Jonathan Saul's son continue to Live While David occupied the

  178. throne, perhaps there would have been a civil issue in Israel

  179. concerning who the true successor was And so God spared

  180. much much, much trouble knowing ahead of time.

  181. What was to come about? And so he removes Jonathan off

  182. the scene in order that David's Journey not just to the throne

  183. but on the throne would be much easier and less turbulent.

  184. That is the popular interpretation.

  185. I don't know if I can, I can lean towards that.

  186. Why would that be the case? Maybe you agree with that and I

  187. can give you at least two reasons why I don't number one

  188. hasn't Jonathan already proven his loyalty.

  189. If Jonathan really wanted to get rid of David, it was it was when

  190. his dad was in power. No.

  191. That's the time when you're going to do it.

  192. Now, when David becomes king and he has everybody on his side,

  193. you want to do it when it's in seed form that would make sense.

  194. But we see the exact opposite he humbles himself.

  195. He says, I want to be second in command.

  196. I want to be by your side. I want to be your eighth.

  197. I recognize God's hand on your life makes sense, but there's

  198. even a second reason I believe and it's a very strong one if

  199. God really. Lee wanted to eliminate the

  200. threats from Saul's line that potentially could cause issues

  201. down the road, with David being on the throne.

  202. Then why didn't he take care of the other one?

  203. How many sons were killed in the battle?

  204. Is that all of Saul's Sons? Would you like to know the

  205. answer? It's in second.

    2 Samuel 2 chapter mention

  206. Samuel chapter 2, just a few chapters to the right?

  207. And notice what happens. In second Samuel chapter 2 verse

    2 Samuel 2:8

  208. 8. But Abner, the son of nerve

  209. commander of Saul's Army, took ish bichette the son of Saul and

  210. brought him over to Mahon Ian and made him King over Gilead,

  211. and Ash rights and just real and Ephraim him and Benjamin and all

  212. Israel. So there was another son of Saul

  213. who for whatever reason was not in battle on this particular day

  214. and when Saul was eliminated Abner the commander of his army

  215. took ishka chef and made him King over the remainder lands of

  216. Israel. So hold on for a second.

  217. If the popular interpretation is God wanted to remove the threats

  218. and David's life, moving forward then he missed somebody.

  219. No. Maybe you agree, I don't know.

  220. We can talk about it afterwards. So then why?

  221. Why? Why did why did Jonathan died?

  222. Here's my answer. I don't know.

  223. You can appeal to mystery sometimes.

  224. Because there are some things. That we just don't know.

  225. And that troubles us especially when it comes to the righteous

  226. suffering. When there is something that's

  227. premature concerning someone's life, whether its death or

  228. disease, or trauma, we wonder why a lot of things have

  229. explanation. You made sinful choices that led

  230. to this. But when you have a man who had

  231. moments where he showed greater Faith than even David, who is

  232. willing to risk so much to be associated with him to be taken

  233. at such a young age at the prime of his life and let's take it

  234. even further. I think David could have really

  235. used Jonathan and his life moving forward.

  236. Jonathan offered so much to David and I'm sure he had so

  237. much yet to offer with all the challenges that lay ahead.

  238. With all the Temptations that lie ahead, if he was able to

  239. speak into his ear at critical moments of his life, that

  240. changed his vision and gave him Faith.

  241. Why would God removes somebody so precious and beneficial to a

  242. man of God like David, Here's the here's the answer, I don't

  243. know. I don't know.

  244. And sometimes that's where we will find ourselves with, with

  245. God's leadership in our lives or in other people's lives.

  246. We're almost stunned. He was in the prime of his

  247. ministry. Why did God take him?

  248. She was a mother of two young children.

  249. Why is she gone? Serving the lord with everything

  250. within them. This generation could have used

  251. that Voice, we just don't know and sometimes the scripture

  252. gives us hints. Let's uh speak into God's mind

  253. to see that. He obviously knows something

  254. that we do not and he calls us to just rest in the way he

  255. orchestrates. His people in this life, can I

  256. show you? One example of that.

  257. It's a powerful portion of scripture that actually has

  258. brought many answers to these conflicts in my own heart.

  259. Not giving me the exact commentary on every particular

  260. circumstance. But enough for me to say God,

  261. you clearly know what's happening.

  262. And you are incredible in your dealings with, man.

  263. Even though it may, it may cause some friction to my faith.

  264. Isaiah chapter, 57. Take it to your to your heart

  265. and let it live there for the rest of your life and 57:10.

  266. And to look at this glorious Insight of how God deals with

  267. the righteous and mysterious ways.

  268. And yet at the same time, let's just get a little glimpse into

  269. the way he works. Notice what it said, in Isaiah

    Isaiah 57:1

  270. 57 verse 1, the righteous man perishes and no one lays it to

  271. heart, devout men are taken away.

  272. While no one understands for the righteous man is taken away from

  273. what calamity. I like, how the King James puts

  274. it. That the righteous man is taken

  275. away from the evil to what to come.

  276. He enters into peace, they rest in their beds, who walk in there

  277. uprightness. You understand what the Lord is

  278. saying here? We don't understand why devout

  279. men are taken away. We don't understand why the

  280. righteous are taken away, the righteous and the land.

  281. And here's one reason, among a thousand.

  282. For the righteous man is taken away from a future evil that

  283. will come, and God wants to spare them from that suffering.

  284. God does not want certain people to endorse certain kinds of

  285. Evil's whether it's societal or personal and so death for the

  286. righteous is a means to rescue them so that they can be

  287. protected from something that otherwise could have caused

  288. unnecessary harm or pain. That's just a drop in the

  289. bucket. Of how God works in the lives of

  290. the righteous. So why did God take Jonathan?

  291. I don't know. But all I do know according to a

  292. verse like this among many others is that there is

  293. something very good that he has in mind for doing.

  294. So I hope that blesses your heart never forget that

  295. scripture. And so three of his sons died.

  296. Including Jonathan, it is tragic, but God is wise and he

  297. is still in control and he's still righteous and we read on

  298. and what do we see that the battle pressed hard against

  299. Saul? And then in verse 4 we read

  300. something interesting. Saul said to his armor Bearer,

  301. draw your sword and thrust me through with it.

  302. Leslie's uncircumcised, come and thrust me through and mistreat

  303. me. But he wouldn't do it.

  304. He says he would not do it for he feared greatly.

  305. And so just imagine this king with arrows in his body bleeding

  306. knowing that he's going to die and so he calls upon his armor

  307. Bearer his assistant and he says, just finish me off.

  308. Rid me of the Earth, let me die. And there's some irony here.

  309. He would not touch him because he feared greatly and listen,

  310. the fear that this armor Bearer had this unnamed man was a

  311. righteous, holy fear. He would not touch Saul.

  312. Do you know how? I know that this was a good fear

  313. because when you go to chapter one of the next book, notice

  314. what David says? Because apparently, somebody did

  315. touch Saul. Somebody did do what this armor,

  316. bear would not do and kill Saul, even though he was, and his

  317. dying moments and the News came to David and when David heard

  318. it, he condemned the man who did it by saying, what and first and

  319. second Samuel 114. David said to him, how is it?

  320. You were not. Not Afraid.

  321. Not afraid to put out your hand, to destroy the Lord's anointed

  322. He condemned it, he didn't commend him.

  323. He rebuked him. In fact, he had him executed and

  324. so you take that truth with this armor bear and what he did not

  325. do and you realize that what he did was a very good thing, a

  326. very holy thing. And it's because he possesses

  327. something that saw himself lacked a fear.

  328. A holy righteous fear something that you've heard many times

  329. from this pulpit. And here's just one example of

  330. how this fear, the sense of reverence, this awareness of

  331. God's ability to hold us. Accountable for what we do, what

  332. we don't do it prevents you from moving forward and doing certain

  333. things. It paralyzes you in a holy way.

  334. Wrong fear paralyzes, you from doing, right?

  335. Good. Holy fear.

  336. Paralyzes you from doing that. Which is wrong.

  337. Do you understand it freezes you in that moment?

  338. And you realize, I can't move forward and makes makes your

  339. feet as though. It was just swallowed with

  340. cement and I can't keep going in this Direction.

  341. That's what that's what holy fear does and Saul act it his

  342. whole life and because he lacked it, he had come to this moment

  343. where he's asking, somebody to assist him in his suicide, If

  344. Saul had with this armor Bearer had, perhaps he would not be in

  345. this desperate devastating situation asking to be helped to

  346. kill himself. And so, this armour-bearer.

  347. Is someone to be more noble and honored than this King?

  348. He is more royalty than this leader.

  349. I don't care what kind of crown he was wearing.

  350. I don't care what kind of Throne.

  351. He sits on this armor. Bear was more Rich, more

  352. prosperous, More Valiant and more strong than King Saul ever

  353. was, because he had something that King Saul never had a fear

  354. of God, fear of God. Get this fear, ask God to make

  355. this fear real in you and you will see the great prevention

  356. and protection. That will come from.

  357. It one that saw obviously did not have and it led him into

  358. great danger. But notice the motive of why

  359. Saul is asking for this. This armor Bearer to slay him.

  360. He says, so that these uncircumcised come and thrust me

  361. through. I don't want them to mistreat

  362. me. I don't want them to humiliate

  363. me and it makes you wonder if he remembered the days of Judges

  364. when when Samson was taken by the Philistines, and he was made

  365. a fool, he was turned into a clown.

  366. Saul says, I would not have it. kill me, kill me so that they

  367. would not have a chance at me, but I think it's even more than

  368. that, so that The story would be told that I died in this way and

  369. not in a way that would humiliate my name.

  370. For the rest of History. Do you know what I see here?

  371. Saw since we've known him except for the first few steps of his

  372. rule as a king. Had a priority in life that

  373. superseded all other motives all other desires and that was this.

  374. I want to win the honor of man. No matter what it costs me, I

  375. want people to love me. I want people to praise me.

  376. I want people to adore me so much, so that, even if it costs

  377. me to displease God, I will do it.

  378. And he has proven it in so many ways.

  379. He took the credit from his own son, Jonathan when he took over

  380. a Garrison of the Philistines, he said Saul has done this move

  381. forward and what happens Saul himself?

  382. Elf creates a monument after a failed attempt to take over the

  383. amalekites. Move forward a little bit after

  384. that when Samuel rebukes him and says you disobeyed God saw was

  385. not concerned by the fact that he sinned against God.

  386. He says, okay, okay, I sent but would you walk with me back?

  387. So that the elders and the rest of the people know that I still

  388. have favor with you and favor with God though, he had

  389. fractured his relationship with the Lord.

  390. It wasn't about the relationship of the Lord.

  391. It was my reputation, Samuel, please.

  392. Let's go to the house of God together so people don't think

  393. that you're angry with me. Saul spent years chasing a man

  394. because they sang more about him than himself.

  395. And here's Saul listen to this. In his final moments of Life,

  396. what's rushing through his mind. I want to make sure that I die

  397. with a certain dignity. What should have you been doing

  398. saw? Crying out to God.

  399. For Mercy, you're about to meet your maker.

  400. And God was merciful enough to you to tell you prophetically

  401. that you were going to die in this way.

  402. And yet, with all the heads up and all the warning, you were

  403. still concerned about how your name will be treated, how your

  404. body will be handled, what kind of dignity you will die with.

  405. So this man went to the Grave with this self-absorption, with

  406. this longing for his legacy to be recognized in a certain way.

  407. And so severe was this. So cancerous was this desire,

  408. you know what he's willing to do?

  409. He's not now willing to kill a man like David, he's willing to

  410. kill himself. I'm willing to kill myself.

  411. So that I can, I can leave behind a certain taste in

  412. people's mouths. You know, when I looked at this

  413. I thought it is no different today.

  414. The Great Lengths that people are willing to go to in order to

  415. win the approval of man. The praise of, man, the love of

  416. man, the recognition of man. You know, we've come to a point

  417. in our society. That the things that go viral

  418. today are just people embarrassing themselves.

  419. The United recognize that things that are viral today, are not

  420. talented things, they're not Noble things, they're not holy

  421. things, they're stupid things. And sometimes they destroy that

  422. person's reputation, sometimes it destroys their own bodies.

  423. The Great Lengths that people are willing to go to do you know

  424. that even suicide attempts, listen to how messed up.

  425. This, is that when people kill themselves they do it for

  426. attention. That they didn't get any

  427. recognition throughout their lives.

  428. So they think to themselves at least when I do this, I can get

  429. some people to recognize my life and recognize me and to mourn

  430. over me and to lament over me. So, I will kill myself.

  431. And so I want to tell you today, that there is nothing.

  432. That I can think of apart from sin itself.

  433. That is more deadly than to be dominated by this desire.

  434. Of people would just love me all that people would just recognize

  435. me. And I just need this attention.

  436. You headed for some dangerous decisions.

  437. This man went from willing to destroy his family, destroy

  438. David to, now willing to kill himself for the sake of not

  439. being known as a failure. I don't want to read too much

  440. into this but I'm wondering. Saul's calling.

  441. According to 1st, Samuel 9 was that he was anointed to take

  442. care of the Philistines to get rid of them.

  443. That's exactly why he was anointed.

  444. And here he is being overtaken by the Philistines.

  445. He's a failure. He's a failure.

  446. And he rather be known as dying from his own man than dying from

  447. his enemies, the enemies that he was anointed to destroy.

  448. But, no concern about eternity. No concern about meeting God.

  449. All these concern about is me, me me until his dying moments.

  450. If you and I think that it will take a deathbed for somebody to

  451. truly repent. You're wrong.

  452. People will die with their pride.

  453. People will die with their love for money.

  454. People will die with their lust. People will die in their sin.

  455. We scroll down and notice something in verse 6, thus all

  456. died and his three sons and his armor Bearer and all his men on

  457. the same day together. On the same day, saw his sons

  458. and his army were annihilated And that's a very Grim picture.

  459. But you know what? I see something quite amazing

  460. about it all his men. And this is the beauty about

  461. studying the Bible. This is the beauty about being

  462. familiar with the text because in your devotional time, you're

  463. not just getting something. In the immediate context, you're

  464. connecting true that you've gathered over the weeks and then

  465. you're able to come to certain Revelations.

  466. So here's an example of that, I read this the Saul died and his

  467. three sons and his Armor Bearer and all his men.

  468. And this thought comes to mind except 600 of them who were once

  469. pledged to him, but fled him and were now joined to David,

  470. Remember that man, that band of men, right?

  471. 600 men who were once under, the rule of Saul, who decided this

  472. man is not God's chosen one, he is God's chosen one.

  473. And so we will leave with our families to join and pledge our

  474. allegiance to him, no matter what it costs us and it cost

  475. them a lot. For years, they went from cave

  476. to Cave living in discomfort Misery, the fear of the unknown

  477. for years. They didn't know what was going

  478. to happen. Next, there was challenging

  479. circumstances, they didn't know how they were going to feed

  480. their families. They didn't know where they were

  481. going to settle. They didn't know when this was

  482. going to come to an end. and with all of that, when you look

  483. at the end of the story, Was it worth it?

  484. Was it worth it to disconnect from Saul and to choose David.

  485. And the answer is obviously to the same person.

  486. Yes. Because judgment came, and they

  487. were rescued from that judgment because of one decision that

  488. they made years ago, we will side with David, the anointed

  489. one of God. And you're a believer that has

  490. pledged your allegiance to the anointed one of God.

  491. Have you not? And the person of Jesus Christ.

  492. And you and I even in the promised land America are still

  493. in a wilderness. And there is much trouble being

  494. associated with this Jesus. It is unpopular at times.

  495. It is uncomfortable at times. It invites trials and

  496. tribulations that perhaps you would have not walk through if

  497. you just lived for your little American dream and your nice

  498. little stuff and your sin. But the same way that it was

  499. worth it for these men so shall it be with those who are under

  500. King Jesus Rule and Reign today? Because just around the corner,

  501. David is going to be exalted and he's going to sit upon a throne

  502. and he will Usher in peace and security and surely, these men

  503. will know a certain reward for choosing to serve David when it

  504. costs them so much. So now it's hard now, it's

  505. difficult. You have to put up with a lot,

  506. but what is this brief moment? It is literally a breath and

  507. compared to Eternity and there is a time when Jesus will come

  508. and Rule and reign in this world and he will rid of Satan who has

  509. been ruining this world as he's running this world and you and I

  510. will know a sigh of relief that will echo down into the ages and

  511. we will I'm sure if our minds allow us to to think to

  512. ourselves. Why did We complain?

  513. Why did we Pat out though that I would have suffered more o that

  514. I would have sacrificed more and light of the glories that we are

  515. enjoying today. We are not judged for all

  516. eternity. We are spared and not just spare

  517. but we are enjoying the riches of Christ being exalted.

  518. Like these men will enjoy so much reward for choosing David

  519. and not being among those who were slain And so we see that.

  520. Yeah, all his men did. But there was a little Remnant,

  521. a small little pocket of men who avoided it.

  522. Who avoided it? Yes, a small little pocket.

  523. You know, the more I walk with Jesus, the more I realize how

  524. narrow the narrow road is man. It's really narrow more narrow

  525. than I thought when I start walking with Jesus, But what

  526. keeps a Believer walking when they feel their shoulders

  527. rubbing against? The very narrowness of that

  528. path. What's to come?

  529. It'll be worth it when we see Jesus exalted. and so we see

  530. that in verse 7, We're not going to cover that men of Israel,

  531. fled certain men. Knowing what happened in the

  532. Philistines came and occupied certain regions, but look at

  533. verse 8, the next day, when the Philistines came to strip, the

  534. slain, they found Saul and his three sons, fallen on Mal

  535. gilboa. So they cut off his head and

  536. stripped off his armor and sent Messengers throughout the land

  537. of the Philistines to carry the good news to the house of their

  538. idols. And to the people, So, it's all

  539. you're worried about being mistreated.

  540. They decapitated you and they're about to hang you like an

  541. ornament in their walls. But I looked at this, and a

  542. certain portion of its stood out to me in the King James and new

  543. King. James, it doesn't say to carry

  544. the good news. It would just say to publish it,

  545. which is the same concept that he is to be in the nasb would

  546. say. They came to carry the good news

  547. to the house of their idols. And to the people we killed saw,

  548. we killed his sons. We got their King.

  549. We got their leader. And here's what came to mind

  550. when I read this today. What was good news for the

  551. enemies of God is bad news for the people of God.

  552. What was good news for the enemies of God.

  553. Is bad news for the people of God.

  554. Now flip it. it is often the case that what is good news,

  555. what is good news for the people of God is seen as horrific news

  556. for those who are unbelieving and are enemies of God, And I

  557. can't think of a more relevant application to that principle

  558. than the recent leak. Of the document from the Supreme

  559. Court that is planning to overturn.

  560. Roe v-- Wade. Me want to see how an Old

  561. Testament story can apply to today, there is one example.

  562. Oh, do you think that Wicked people are some Fringe minority

  563. that live and maximum security prisons.

  564. Now all you got to do is just take a little peek into society

  565. itself and realize that people who have nice jobs and nice cars

  566. and nice little white picket homes are exploding with rage.

  567. Because they have just learned that, it's now, possible for

  568. them to not have the easy access to murder babies.

  569. Like they would like to Evil. Is in your neighborhood.

  570. Wickedness is just around the corner.

  571. And you see it in the ancient times where he was good news to

  572. kill those who belong to the true.

  573. God, you and I are seeing it today and we will see it only

  574. intensify in the days to come. But I want to tell you that this

  575. warped. Mentality is a result of the

  576. same result of what these men are doing, worshiping, false

  577. gods. In the form of idolatry or in

  578. the form of self worship. When you do that and you deviate

  579. from the Lord, you inherit strange ways of thinking and you

  580. believe and fight for that, which is evil, and that which

  581. God condemns When this whole thing was really at its peak and

  582. I'm sure it's going to revisit us when it really comes closer

  583. to the date where they're going to actually make this law.

  584. I thought to myself, all these people chanting, we must defend

  585. a woman's right to choose. I thought you couldn't Define a

  586. woman. Oh no.

  587. But men have no right to weigh in on the abortion issue will?

  588. I thought men can now get pregnant.

  589. Well, you know, a fetus Is Not a Human Being, or really.

  590. So why is it that in many places?

  591. You can be prosecuted for double homicide if you kill a pregnant

  592. woman? This is the inconsistency, the

  593. self-sabotaging logic that a society inherits when they

  594. reject God. They can't even keep up with

  595. themselves. And I'm telling you, if you

  596. think it's ridiculous today, it's only going to get crazier.

  597. It's only going to get more maniacal and evil and twisted,

  598. and warped. Let me give you an example.

  599. I want you to actually answer this question on What occasion

  600. would you give a gift to somebody?

  601. Christmas birthday. Yeah, happy occasions for you

  602. Romantics when you just want to surprise your loved one and just

  603. give something to show your appreciation, right?

  604. Have you ever thought about giving gifts to someone?

  605. Because to preachers died and they're happy that they don't

  606. have to hear your sermons anymore?

  607. Some of you look stunned. I didn't just come up with that

  608. that's in the Bible. Yes, let me show you just an

  609. example of what we're headed towards you.

  610. Think we're living in evil days today.

  611. Go to Revelation chapter 11, I want to show you something

    Revelation 11 chapter mention

  612. that's quite astounding. In Revelation 11 verse 9.

    Revelation 11:9

  613. We read, if we read of these two witnesses that have unusual

  614. power and ability during the end times who will preach in a

  615. certain way and even perform certain Miracles that will be a

  616. testimony to a generation that the true God is, in fact alive

  617. and well. And he commands for your

  618. repentance and he calls for you to turn from your ways before

  619. it's too late but in God's. Perfect Sovereign plan.

  620. He after their testimony is Pleat will allow Satan to kill

  621. these two witnesses and we're not going to cover who these

  622. Witnesses could be. There's a principle that we want

  623. to see here after these two witnesses are slain.

  624. Notice what happens in verse 9 of Revelation, 11 for three and

  625. a half days, some of the peoples and tribes and languages, and

  626. Nations will gaze at their dead bodies and refused to let them

  627. be placed in a tomb. It's why we got to read our

  628. Bibles slowly think about it, peoples and tribes, and

  629. languages, and Nations is that one nation or plural Nations.

  630. Can you explain how John? Just under a hundred years

  631. before Christ or after Christ. Saw something.

  632. Where Nations at the same time, we're able to look at one event

  633. in one part of the world and be able to simultaneously at the

  634. same time, get a feed of what's Happening.

  635. Any idea. Yes, the very thing that's in

  636. your phone in some in our hands. And so, John even foresaw that

  637. there is going to be an ability for Nations and tribes and

  638. peoples to look at one event at the same time and and leading up

  639. to our day processing. What is John seeing and now it's

  640. like oh yeah, it's the iPhone. The Bible is amazing, isn't it?

  641. And verse 10 and those who dwell on the earth Will Rejoice over

  642. them and make Merry and exchanged presence because these

  643. two prophets have been a torment to those who dwell on the Earth.

  644. So not only are they going to broadcast it live?

  645. The people around the world were it's going to be so depraved, so

  646. ugly. So dark that when these two holy

  647. righteous, men who will perform Miracles are finally dead, they

  648. will send gifts to each other as though it was Christmas.

  649. And I looked at that word torment, they were a torment to

  650. those who dwell on the earth and that were torment is not used

  651. often in the Book of Revelation. And when I said, where else is

  652. tormented, use the exact same word, where is it used in the

  653. even in the original and I realized just three chapters

  654. later, you see it again and notice the context in which the

  655. same word torment is brought up when it speaks about hell.

  656. To those who take the mark of the beast, to those who worship

  657. the Antichrist and verse 10 of Revelation, 14.

  658. Look what the Bible says, he will also drink.

  659. This is the consequence that judgment the wine of God's Wrath

  660. poured, full strength into the cup of his anger and he will be

  661. tormented with fire and sulfur in the presence of the Holy

  662. Angels and in the presence of the Lamb, the same word torment,

  663. so make the connection. Check this out.

  664. The word used to describe the, the horrible pain and suffering,

  665. that will come upon those who reject Christ and embrace.

  666. The Antichrist is the very same word that is used to describe

  667. the reaction of those who hear the preaching of two Godly men.

  668. It was held to them. They don't want to hear the

  669. truth. They didn't want to hear that.

  670. They needed to repent. They didn't want to hear that.

  671. God was coming. And so it was held to their

  672. soul. The same way, it will be

  673. literal. Hell for those who reject

  674. Christ. Can you imagine that?

  675. Can you imagine being so depraved to be tormented by

  676. something that is happening right now?

  677. I've seen some really disappointed faces while

  678. preaching I've seen some but I've never seen somebody

  679. tormented. That day is coming.

  680. Consider that. And we scroll down here and are

  681. taxed as we close very briefly, very soon.

  682. Rather and verse 10, they put his armor in the temple of

  683. ashtaroth and they fastened his body to the wall of Beth Shan.

  684. But when the inhabitants of Jabez Gilead heard what the

  685. Philistines had done to Saul all the Valiant men are rose and

  686. went all night and took the body of Saw and the bodies of his

  687. sons from the wall of Beth Chan and they came to jabish and

  688. burned them. They're the reason why they

  689. burned them. It's perhaps the stench.

  690. There were so decomposed, they were so rotting.

  691. That the best thing to do is to just burn them, it wasn't

  692. because that was their primary choice.

  693. Verse 13 and they took their bones and buried them under the

  694. tamarisk. Tree and jabish and fasted 7

  695. days. Look at verse 12.

  696. All the Valiant men arose. Very dark chapter.

  697. I mean, it's ends the book in a low. but there's a glimmer of

  698. hope here and somebody made the wonderful observation, remember,

  699. Saul, the king died, all of Israel's Army vanquished, yet at

  700. the same time though, it seems such so despairing and so,

  701. Filled with hopelessness. God had a king ready to be

  702. exalted. He's waiting there.

  703. And so these men thought that they had the king and the

  704. kingdom, Destroyed and yet God and in a moment has another king

  705. ready to be raised up destroyed all the armies of Israel.

  706. Well looking for swallow, there are there are Valiant men still

  707. in Israel. And here's the point, God always

  708. has a people God always has a people listen.

  709. I don't know about you that bless me especially with the

  710. condition of the church in the west.

  711. When all we've been seeing is a highlight reel of failures in

  712. ministries, and administers always seen is one giant fall

  713. after the next, some, even questionable in their walk with

  714. the Lord to begin with. But who have a name big enough

  715. to cause the, the Philistines of Our Generation.

  716. To boast in their gods and boast in their way of life to say.

  717. This is what this is the failure that the people of God are we

  718. want nothing to do with them. They are weak.

  719. They can't even stay consistent with our own convictions.

  720. With all of that that's happening.

  721. God still has a people. God is still raising up faithful

  722. anointed leaders and God still has a remnant of valiant

  723. courageous God-fearing. People always throughout all of

  724. history that has always been the case, the choice you and I have

  725. is whether we Want to be a part of that or not, and we all have

  726. that choice. But here's my question, why the

  727. men of Jabez Gilead? Why did they honor Saul?

  728. Why did they show this? Great respect even risking their

  729. own lives to go into enemy territory and to try to pull

  730. down their bodies. Why any idea

  731. Very good. Lord.

  732. Did you hear the answer? This is not the first time that

  733. we see JBS Gilead. In fact, jabish Gilead.

  734. Is found just a few moments after Saul was truly anointed to

  735. be king. And that's in first Samuel, 11,

  736. and I want you to turn there very briefly, just to see what's

  737. happening there. And first Samuel 11, The

  738. ammonites threatened, a group of Israelites from jabish Gilead.

  739. In verse 1. Then the hash the am and I went

  740. up and besieged jabish Gilead and all the men of jabish.

  741. Said than the hash make a treaty with us, and we will serve you.

  742. But in the hash, the ammonites said to them on this condition,

  743. I will make a treaty with you that I gouge out all your right

  744. eyes and thus bring disgrace on all Israel.

  745. You want to make a deal, here's the deal.

  746. I won't kill you. Just let me make you all blind

  747. at least with half your vision. They bring this news to saw the

  748. spirit of God rushes upon Saul and he brings a mighty

  749. Deliverance for the citizens of Jabez Gilead.

  750. Years passed by saw looks a lot different than he did in first

  751. Samuel 11. And yet in his death.

  752. The citizens and the inhabitants of Jabez Gilead said he

  753. delivered us. We must honor him.

  754. We must respect him, he did something for us, we must do

  755. something for him. Now we can apply that principle

  756. in our need to honor on a horizontal level but what

  757. greater motivation than to realize, what we what we must

  758. give to Christ. We must give to him.

  759. He is not an imperfect King. He is not a sporadic King, he

  760. always is faithful. He doesn't just deliver us at

  761. one time, he continues to deliver us and save us and

  762. rescue us. And if that is the case, then

  763. should we not risk it all to honor him?

  764. Should we not? I remember when I first got

  765. saved. And we did some little thing at

  766. a church, a little skit. And they asked me to do as I

  767. can. Okay, I'll do it.

  768. So I just wanted to be nice. And they asked me to share a few

  769. lines at the end of The Skit. So I did and it was all about

  770. how Christ sacrificed for us and so I made the point if Christ

  771. had sacrificed so much for him for us.

  772. How much more should we sacrifice for him?

  773. Amen. Amen.

  774. Amen. Currents close.

  775. You know and then I guess somebody in the crowd didn't

  776. like what I said. And so they came up to me and

  777. they said You know, you said, if Christ sacrificed so much for

  778. us, what should we sacrifice for him?

  779. And he said, brother, Christ's sacrifice everything.

  780. We don't need to do anything for him.

  781. And I had so many questions in that moment.

  782. But I thought to myself, do you understand the depth of his

  783. sacrifice? Do you understand the depth of

  784. his sacrifice? Does it make you a mobile?

  785. Is that the Revelation that you have that it makes you just sit

  786. on your your hands? You see what Jeb has Gilly.

  787. I did this great campaign. To honoring Saul was all pumping

  788. from a heart filled with one thing and that's gratitude.

  789. And that is the greatest quality of service to Christ when it

  790. comes from the stream of Thanksgiving.

  791. If not you will burn yourself out, if not, you will easily

  792. fall into the pit of legalism. If what we're doing is not from

  793. the place of Thanksgiving them. Why are we doing it?

  794. Is it performance-based, is it? Because it's our duty?

  795. What everything that you and I do comes from gratitude and the

  796. depth of our gratitude comes from the depth of the revelation

  797. of what he's done and that will affect the depth of our service

  798. to him. So when somebody says something

  799. like that to me just I don't know what it was but Only thing

  800. I left from there was perhaps this man does not understand

  801. what Christ deserves. Yes, we don't work to save

  802. ourselves, that's that's basic. But what comes about in your

  803. life when you reflect on what he's done and what jabish Gilead

  804. is doing with something that happened years ago and you and I

  805. likewise do something today based on what happened, 2,000

  806. years ago, that affected you now that change you now, I would

  807. love to end there but there's a verse left and verse 13 and

  808. that's where I would like us to end and they took their bones

  809. and buried them under the tamarisk.

  810. Tree and jabish and fasted seven days.

  811. The Bible does not give details for no reason.

  812. Sometimes the Revelation is in the small minut details and

  813. here's the detail. Why do I need to know what kind

  814. of trees saw was buried under? Do you know why?

  815. Because this is not the first time that a tamarisk tree.

  816. Is mentioned alongside with Saul.

  817. And it's very significant to realize the last place where

  818. Saul is mentioned sitting under this kind of tree and connecting

  819. it with where he ends his life. The last time where Saul is seen

  820. with a tamarisk tree, is in 1st Samuel, 5:40, and that is the

  821. official. Last verse of this Bible study?

  822. When you go there, you'll notice something quite powerful. 22:6.

  823. Now Saul heard that David was discovered and the men who were

  824. with him saw was sitting at gibeah under the tamarisk tree

  825. on the height with his spear in his hand and all his servants

  826. were standing about him. Do you remember this study?

  827. Saul was at one of his greatest Heights or you can say greatest

  828. Lowe's. With his jealousy and his pride

  829. in his envy and here he is sitting underneath this tree

  830. with a spear in his hand. And he is so consumed with rage

  831. and so overwhelmed with evil that he even commands the priest

  832. from knob to be slaughtered because he thought that there

  833. were conspiring against him by helping David.

  834. And so this man who's sitting in this position of authority but

  835. not just Authority, who is sitting and using his authority

  836. to perform. Great evil to satisfy his pride

  837. to satisfy the lust of the flesh.

  838. Check this out. God has a, such a wonderful

  839. sense of humor. Kills him.

  840. And has him buried by the bones, under the same type of tree.

  841. And I think there's a statement there.

  842. And here's the statement. God knows how to Humble the

  843. proud. And the very same place, where

  844. you exercised, your evil and your sin, and thought that you

  845. were Untouchable and thought that you were surrounded by

  846. supporters and thought you had so much Authority.

  847. That very same place. Can become your grave, Listen,

  848. God knows how to Humble the proud and he can do it in very

  849. creative ways. And so he would not be known as

  850. the great commander, who sat under the tamarisk tree, he

  851. would be known as the man who was decapitated, brutalized who

  852. failed in his mission and was buried under the tamarisk tree.

  853. May God help us finish? Well, May God help us finish?

  854. Well, I don't want to just start really well.

  855. I want to finish well. I want to finish with on or not

  856. before men. I want to finish with with God's

  857. Commendation in my life. What use is it what use is it if

  858. men right about you or praise you who cares?

  859. But to know that we bring a smile to his face face because

  860. no matter what's all new in his life, no matter what kind of

  861. satisfaction that he would enjoy with the moments that he

  862. received some kind of recognition.

  863. All of that would fade as he stood before the glory of God.

  864. God. So keep that in mind as we end

  865. this book, what better way of ending it with the thought of

  866. Lord, help me finish. Well, And please, if you are

  867. sitting in a position like Saul was at one point where you think

  868. you can hold onto your sin and cos more sin.

  869. And entertain it with no Consequence.

  870. The Lord is so merciful, he will get your attention.

  871. He will let you experience his Mercy.

  872. He will wake you up with his goodness.

  873. All these things will come about but there comes a point where he

  874. says enough is enough. Have to put an end to this.

  875. And he did it with Saul and what awaits us.

  876. What awaits us saw was the big problem, right?

  877. He's out of the way, he's out of the way.

  878. It's done. Now, it's just going to be a

  879. Utopia and Israel. No, no.

  880. We have a whole nother book with a brand new challenges with

  881. brand new Revelations that come with it.

  882. Let's just ask the Lord to help us.

  883. Lord, we thank you for this study.

  884. And we asked you from the bottom of our hearts.

  885. Oh God. Please, please help us live for

  886. you, right? Thank you.

  887. Lord, that you still have a Remnant, thank you, Lord, that

  888. you still have a plan that in these dark days, Laura things

  889. are still under your control. Lord, we just ask that in these

  890. times, we would be found among those who are courageous and

  891. faithful unto you. Although we thank you for Jesus.

  892. We choose to live for him now before Heaven, before painless

  893. existence, before glories, that will in rapturous Lord, when

  894. it's difficult when it's hard, when it's challenging, we choose

  895. to pledge our allegiance to the Lord Jesus Christ.

  896. And even if it's a small number or God, we still want to be in

  897. that number. Lord, let these truths change

  898. us, and Lord, prepare us for this next study, be with us as

  899. you've been with us, in 1st Samuel in Jesus mighty name we

  900. pray, amen. Amen.

  901. Even before we sing, here's, there's benefit to this from

  902. time to time. Sometimes, I don't want us to

  903. just go with the routine because we go on autopilot mode, just,

  904. just where you're sitting right now.

  905. As we end this book, Reflect on all that you've heard in the

  906. past few weeks and months. I know it can be overwhelming to

  907. think about but just something that you maybe even just from

  908. today. Apply it and then bring it

  909. before the Lord, and just speak to the Lord.

  910. And just, we'll just spend a few moments doing that.

  911. Lord. I believe you're the same God

  912. that, I, that I just heard about and Lord, I'm just asking you to

  913. do a work in my heart. And even if your dull and even

  914. if you were distracted, this entire Bible study, which is

  915. very possible. Tell him tell him to help you

  916. tell him to rescue from that place.

  917. After that, we will fellowship and we will laugh and we will

  918. enjoy ourselves, but just in this moment between you and God

  919. and just if you guys can play softly, just something softly,

  920. just even the guitar and then we will sing together and then we

  921. will move forward, okay? Just fellowship with the Lord.
