  1. Luke 22, verses 1 to 23.

    Luke 22:1–23

  2. Now, the feast of unleavened bread drew near, which is called the Passover.

  3. And the chief priests and the scribes were seeking how to put him to death, for they fear the people.

  4. Then Satan entered into Judas called Iscariot, who was of the number of the twelve.

  5. He went away and conferred with the chief priests and officers how he might betray him to them.

  6. And they were glad and agreed to give him money.

  7. So he consented and sought an opportunity to betray him to them in the absence of a crowd.

  8. Then came the day of unleavened bread, on which the Passover lamb had to be sacrificed.

  9. So Jesus sent Peter and John, saying,

  10. Go and prepare the Passover for us, that we may eat it.

  11. They said to him, Where will you have us prepare it?

  12. He said to them, Behold, when you have entered the city, a man carrying a jar of water will meet you.

  13. Follow him into the house that he enters, and tell the master of the house,

  14. The teacher says to you, Where is the guest room where I may eat the Passover with my disciples?

  15. And he will show you a large upper room furnished.

  16. Prepare it there.

  17. And they went and found it, just as he had told them.

  18. And they prepared the Passover.

  19. And when the hour came, he reclined at table and the apostles with him.

  20. And he said to them, I have earnestly desired to eat this Passover with you before I suffer.

  21. For I tell you, I will not eat it until it is fulfilled in the kingdom of God.

  22. And he took a cup, and when he had given thanks, he said,

  23. Take this and divide it among yourselves.

  24. For I tell you that from now on I will not drink of the fruit of the vine until the kingdom of God comes.

  25. And he took bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it and gave it to them, saying,

  26. This is my body, which is given for you.

  27. Do this in remembrance of me.

  28. And likewise, the cup after they had eaten, saying,

  29. This cup that is poured out for you is the new covenant in my blood.

  30. But behold, the hand of him who betrays me is with me on the table.

  31. For the Son of Man goes as it has been determined.

  32. But woe to that man by whom he is betrayed.

  33. And they began to question one another, which of them it could be who was going to do this.

  34. This is God's holy and authoritative word.

  35. Everyone appreciates a good deal.

  36. We're elated when we find a good bargain at the grocery store.

  37. Or when our favorite sports team makes a good trade.

  38. Conversely, however, no one likes to be ripped off.

  39. No one likes to be short-changed.

  40. To get the short end of the stick.

  41. Least of all, us.

  42. And in our passage for today, we find two exchanges.

  43. First, a terrible exchange.

  44. And then, the great exchange.

  45. And both of them are extremely unfair.

  46. Unequal exchanges.

  47. But they work to our favor.

  48. By God's grace.

  49. First exchange we see is of Judah's exchange of his master for money.

  50. And the second exchange we see is Jesus' exchange of his life for our salvation.

  51. And the main point that Luke wants us to take away from us.

  52. We are to remember the Passover lamb who was sacrificed for our inclusion in the kingdom of God.

  53. So let's first look at Judah's exchange of his master for money.

  54. Verse 1 tells us that now the Feast of Unleavened Bread drew near, which is called the Passover.

  55. The Feast of Unleavened Bread was one of the most important festivals for which Jews, hundreds of thousands of pilgrims,

  56. gathered from all over the world to Jerusalem.

  57. Because that's where it had to be celebrated.

  58. On Passover Day, an unblemished year-old male lamb was sacrificed at the temple to commemorate Israel's exodus from Egypt.

  59. And then after sunset that day, which is, according to Jewish reckoning, when a new day would begin,

  60. after sunset they would eat this Passover lamb, thus beginning a week-long celebration,

  61. this festival called the bread, the Unleavened Bread.

  62. And because of this close connection between the Passover day and the Feast of Unleavened Bread,

  63. gospel writers often use those two terms interchangeably, which has led to some confusion among some people.

  64. But here it's referring to both.

  65. Ironically, however, as this holy feast is approaching,

  66. it's a feast that celebrates God's sparing and saving of Israel.

  67. And as this is approaching, the very leaders of Israel, the Jewish leaders,

  68. who should have been busy with preparation, preparing their hearts, preparing the temple for this great celebration,

  69. instead they are busy plotting to kill Jesus.

  70. Because in the preceding chapters we've seen over and over again how these chief priests and the scribes,

  71. they sought to discredit Jesus by asking Him thorny political questions

  72. and posing these theological dilemmas that they thought had no answers.

  73. But each time Jesus thwarted them and proved Himself to be the superior teacher.

  74. So that it said in Luke 20, verse 40,

    Luke 20:40

  75. they no longer dared to ask Him any question.

  76. And not only did Jesus outwit them,

  77. He directly exposed their hypocrisy

  78. and challenged their authority as the leaders among God's people.

  79. And all of this happened, Jesus did this,

  80. not in private quarters,

  81. but in the hearing of all the people out in the open.

  82. In fact,

  83. in these Jewish leaders' home court,

  84. right in their backyard,

  85. in the temple precincts.

  86. And so you can imagine they were embarrassed and enraged.

  87. And their prideful sulking soon hatched this murderous plot.

  88. And so it says in verse 2,

  89. And the chief priests and the scribes were seeking how to put Jesus to death,

  90. for they feared the people.

  91. Especially because there were so many pilgrims,

  92. hundreds and thousands of them in the city,

  93. and Jesus was very popular.

  94. There were many among them who were Jesus' followers and disciples.

  95. These chief priests and scribes did not dare to arrest Jesus in public,

  96. lest they cause an uproar in the city,

  97. riots, protests.

  98. And so they were plotting together,

  99. How can we get this done?

  100. How can we put Him to death without upsetting the masses?

  101. They were prevented from carrying out their murderous intent,

  102. not because they feared God,

  103. whom they are accountable to,

  104. which should have been the reason,

  105. but instead they were prevented by the fear of man.

  106. But it's not just the chief priests and the scribes

  107. that are plotting at this juncture.

  108. There are greater, stronger spiritual forces at work.

  109. It says in verse 3,

  110. Satan,

  111. Satan,

  112. Satan,

  113. Satan,

  114. who is not an adversary or accuser,

  115. he is described in Ephesians chapter 2, verse 2,

    Ephesians 2:2

  116. as the prince of the power of the air,

  117. the spirit that is now at work in the sons of disobedience.

  118. He is prince,

  119. a ruler among the evil spirits.

  120. He is at work in Judas' betrayal.

  121. So the language of entering into someone implies some kind of possession and control.

  122. And I don't want you,

  123. especially if you're a believer,

  124. here to fall prey to unwarranted fears about demon possession.

  125. So let me assure you that true believers indwelled by the spirit of God

  126. cannot become possessed by evil spirits.

  127. Now, Christians can give ground to the devil,

  128. give opportunity to the devil,

  129. and come under significant demonic attack and influence.

  130. That's why Ephesians 4, 26 to 27 teach us not to remain angry for long,

  131. lest we give an opportunity, a foothold to the devil.

  132. However, Christians cannot be possessed by the devil

  133. because Colossians 1, 13 says,

  134. God has delivered us,

  135. God's people,

  136. from the domain of darkness

  137. and transferred us into the kingdom of his beloved son.

  138. We now have a new allegiance.

  139. We're in a new kingdom,

  140. not under the prince of the power of the air's authority anymore.

  141. We're under Christ's authority in a new kingdom of God.

  142. And this is why whenever the New Testament speaks of demon possession,

  143. it invariably involves unbelievers, non-Christians.

  144. It happens in the context of evangelism.

  145. So in the Gospels, for example,

  146. when Jesus encounters an unbeliever who is demon-possessed,

  147. it says that Jesus casts them out,

  148. exorcises the demon.

  149. But in all of the New Testament epistles,

  150. letters that are written to the church,

  151. to God's people,

  152. there is not a single instruction on exorcism.

  153. When it comes to instructing believers on spiritual warfare,

  154. the language that the New Testament uses is remarkably consistent.

  155. 1 Peter 5, 9 says,

  156. resist the devil.

  157. Ephesians 6, 11 says,

  158. stand against the schemes of the devil.

  159. James 4, 7 says,

  160. resist the devil,

  161. and he will flee from you.

  162. Why?

  163. Because when it comes to believers,

  164. the exhortation is never to cast them out,

  165. because they're not in you,

  166. but rather it's to resist them,

  167. because they're outside of you,

  168. and are oppressing you,

  169. and attacking you,

  170. and pressing in on you.

  171. But Judas here is subject to internal possession.

  172. Satan enters into him.

  173. Now, that doesn't mean that Judas is not personally responsible for what he did.

  174. We see that his personal agency is not erased,

  175. because he still held accountable for his deed in verse 22 later.

  176. But there is a satanic conspiracy behind Judas' betrayal.

  177. Earlier in Luke chapter 4,

    Luke 4 chapter mention

  178. Satan appeared three times to tempt Jesus,

  179. to tempt him to take his life into his own hands,

  180. to disobey his father.

  181. But Jesus triumphed in that encounter,

  182. and overcame his temptations.

  183. And it's said at that point,

  184. in Luke chapter 4, verse 13,

    Luke 4:13

  185. that the devil, Satan,

  186. departed from Jesus until an opportune time.

  187. And since then,

  188. Satan has not appeared in the Gospel of Luke

  189. as a character,

  190. as a direct agent.

  191. He's been mentioned by other people,

  192. but he has never appeared as a character in the story.

  193. And this is when he first reappears

  194. after Jesus' temptation.

  195. So then this is the opportune time

  196. that he's been waiting for

  197. to finally, in his own mind,

  198. to try to get the best of Jesus.

  199. And we can see here that Satan is not,

  200. you know,

  201. waging his war on God's people

  202. and God's kingdom

  203. in a willy-nilly fashion,

  204. in an unplanned manner.

  205. He is planning.

  206. He's strategizing.

  207. He waits for the opportune time.

  208. He handpicks people like Judas

  209. with whom he can do great damage.

  210. It says in verses 3 to 5,

  211. Then Satan entered into Judas,

  212. called Iscariot,

  213. who was of the number of the twelve.

  214. He went away

  215. and conferred with the chief priests and officers

  216. how he might betray him to them.

  217. And they were glad

  218. and agreed to give him money.

  219. In order to avoid a public outcry,

  220. remember that the Jewish leaders

  221. were trying to figure out

  222. how to get Jesus arrested privately.

  223. And here is an insider,

  224. one of the number of the twelve,

  225. a member of the most exclusive

  226. and intimate group

  227. of Jesus' disciples,

  228. volunteering to betray

  229. his teacher and Lord.

  230. And this is a great boon

  231. to these Jewish leaders

  232. because he knows,

  233. Judas knows Jesus' schedule.

  234. He's itinerary.

  235. So he can direct the chief priests

  236. and the scribes

  237. to arrest Jesus

  238. in a secluded place

  239. outside of the view

  240. of the crowds.

  241. This has just fallen

  242. onto their laps.

  243. So of course,

  244. he says they were glad.

  245. They're delighted.

  246. And notice the terrible exchange

  247. that takes place here.

  248. It says in verse 3,

  249. Satan entered into Judas

  250. and it says in verse 4

  251. that Judas went away,

  252. that is,

  253. away from Jesus.

  254. The two words in the Greek

  255. enter and went

  256. are exactly the same

  257. except for the prefixes.

  258. So it highlights this contrast.

  259. Satan went into Judas

  260. so that Judas went away from Jesus.

  261. Satan entered into Judas

  262. so that Judas exited

  263. from Jesus' presence.

  264. It's a horrible exchange.

  265. An unthinkable betrayal

  266. by one of Jesus'

  267. most intimate companions.

  268. And why did Judas

  269. commit such a despicable act?

  270. What had Jesus done to him?

  271. The Bible only gives

  272. this one reason.

  273. Verse 5.

  274. And they were glad

  275. and agreed to give Judas money.

  276. Judas discerned

  277. that the Jewish leaders

  278. were hostile toward Jesus.

  279. He deduced that

  280. they intended to kill him,

  281. to harm him.

  282. And he went to them

  283. seeking to make a deal.

  284. I think I can make some money

  285. off of this.

  286. I see what they're up to.

  287. And he found

  288. the Jewish leaders'

  289. financial offer agreeable

  290. because it says in verse 6

  291. he consented.

  292. It's like a formal deal

  293. taking place.

  294. He consented

  295. and sought an opportunity

  296. to betray Jesus to them

  297. in the absence

  298. of a crowd.

  299. This is especially shocking

  300. because the Gospel of Luke,

  301. really more than any other gospel,

  302. warns against

  303. the love of money.

  304. Jesus has repeatedly warned

  305. about the love of money

  306. throughout this gospel.

  307. He said in Luke 16,

    Luke 16:13

  308. verse 13,

  309. No servant can serve

  310. two masters.

  311. For either he will hate

  312. the one

  313. and love the other,

  314. or he will be devoted

  315. to the one

  316. and despise

  317. the other.

  318. You cannot serve

  319. God and money.

  320. Judas could not serve

  321. both Jesus

  322. and money.

  323. And Judas chose money.

  324. He was a lover

  325. of money.

  326. John 12,

  327. 4-6 tell us

  328. that he was a thief

  329. who helped himself

  330. to the communal purse

  331. of Jesus

  332. and his 12 apostles

  333. to help himself.

  334. We have a catchphrase

  335. in English

  336. that dovetails well

  337. with this story.

  338. You've heard the phrase,

  339. follow the money,

  340. right?

  341. I looked up the origin.

  342. I think it comes from a movie

  343. that none of us

  344. have probably seen.

  345. If you want to identify

  346. the root of political corruption,

  347. if you want to identify

  348. the mastermind

  349. behind some criminal activity,

  350. follow the money.

  351. Ask yourself,

  352. who will profit

  353. from this venture?

  354. Because the money trail

  355. will inevitably

  356. lead you to the culprit.

  357. It's no wonder

  358. that 1 Timothy 6,

  359. 10 says,

  360. the love of money

  361. is a root

  362. of all kinds

  363. of evils.

  364. It is through

  365. this craving

  366. that some

  367. have wandered away

  368. from the faith

  369. and pierced themselves

  370. with many pangs.

  371. Judas

  372. wandered away

  373. from the faith

  374. and pierced himself

  375. with many pangs

  376. because he loved money.

  377. And this example

  378. of Judas' betrayal,

  379. one of the 12 apostles,

  380. one of the most trusted friends

  381. and followers of Jesus,

  382. is intended to teach us

  383. that being

  384. around Jesus

  385. doesn't necessarily

  386. indicate

  387. that we are

  388. with Jesus.

  389. It's possible

  390. to pay

  391. lip service

  392. to Jesus

  393. without actually

  394. loving him

  395. with your whole heart.

  396. it's possible

  397. to look like

  398. a Christian

  399. without being one.

  400. You may have

  401. all the

  402. cultural

  403. accoutrements

  404. of Christianity.

  405. You may very well

  406. have the appearance

  407. of being a Christian.

  408. But here's

  409. the true test.

  410. Is there anything

  411. that you love

  412. more

  413. than you love

  414. Jesus?

  415. Is there anyone

  416. that you love

  417. more

  418. than you love

  419. Jesus?

  420. There can be

  421. only one

  422. King,

  423. Lord,

  424. and God.

  425. In order to submit

  426. to Christ

  427. as our Lord

  428. and Savior,

  429. we have to

  430. subordinate

  431. all of our

  432. other relationships,

  433. interests,

  434. and allegiances,

  435. and priorities

  436. to following him

  437. and loving him

  438. and worshiping him

  439. and serving him.

  440. So do you crave

  441. the respect

  442. and approval

  443. of other people

  444. more than you desire

  445. Christ and his love?

  446. Do you want

  447. to be liked

  448. by your peers

  449. more than you want

  450. to become

  451. like Jesus?

  452. Do you want

  453. to be successful,

  454. wealthy,

  455. more than you want

  456. to be faithful

  457. to Jesus?

  458. Jesus.

  459. I'm not talking

  460. about trying

  461. and failing.

  462. We could try

  463. and fail

  464. and then repent

  465. and believe again.

  466. Everyone sins.

  467. Every Christian

  468. sins.

  469. But the difference

  470. between the Christian

  471. and the non-Christian

  472. is that a Christian

  473. always repents

  474. of his sins

  475. and turns

  476. toward Jesus

  477. in faith

  478. clinging to him

  479. for salvation.

  480. Is Jesus

  481. the one

  482. whom you

  483. are living for?

  484. No servant

  485. can serve

  486. two masters.

  487. This is the reality

  488. for either

  489. he will hate

  490. the one

  491. and love the other

  492. or he will be

  493. devoted to the one

  494. and despise the other.

  495. Human beings

  496. are by very

  497. nature

  498. servants.

  499. That's how

  500. God created us.

  501. That's why

  502. Philippians 2.7

  503. says that Jesus

  504. emptied himself

  505. by taking the form

  506. of a servant

  507. and what is that

  508. form like?

  509. Being born

  510. in the likeness

  511. of men.

  512. To be a human

  513. is to be

  514. a servant.

  515. Bob Dylan

  516. had it right.

  517. You've got to

  518. serve somebody.

  519. It's woven

  520. into the very

  521. fabric of

  522. human identity,

  523. human existence.

  524. The question is

  525. whom will

  526. you serve?

  527. There can only

  528. be one master

  529. and there's only

  530. one who is

  531. worthy to be

  532. your master

  533. and that is God.

  534. Is God

  535. your supreme

  536. authority

  537. in life?

  538. Are your beliefs,

  539. your behaviors,

  540. are they grounded

  541. in and guided

  542. by God's word?

  543. Or are you

  544. your own master?

  545. there's a word

  546. for that.

  547. A word

  548. for someone

  549. who claims

  550. to rule,

  551. claims to be

  552. a master,

  553. but doesn't

  554. have the right

  555. to rule.

  556. It's called

  557. rebellion.

  558. It's called

  559. treason.

  560. It's called

  561. sin.

  562. And we

  563. are all

  564. guilty

  565. of it.

  566. And that's

  567. what necessitates

  568. the second

  569. exchange,

  570. the great

  571. exchange.

  572. Let's turn to

  573. verses 7 to

  574. 23 here

  575. and it

  576. says the

  577. Passover

  578. that was

  579. approaching

  580. in verse

  581. 1 is now

  582. here.

  583. Then came

  584. the day

  585. of unleavened

  586. bread

  587. on which

  588. the Passover

  589. lamb had

  590. to be

  591. sacrificed.

  592. So Jesus

  593. sent Peter

  594. and John

  595. saying,

  596. go and

  597. prepare the

  598. Passover

  599. for us

  600. that we

  601. may eat

  602. it.

  603. But Peter

  604. and John

  605. are unaware

  606. of any

  607. prior arrangement

  608. that Jesus

  609. had made

  610. so they

  611. ask him

  612. in verse

  613. 9,

  614. where will

  615. you have

  616. us prepare

  617. it?

  618. And Jesus

  619. replied with

  620. a very

  621. specific set

  622. of instructions

  623. in verses

  624. 10 to

  625. 12,

  626. behold,

  627. when you

  628. have

  629. entered

  630. the city

  631. a man

  632. carrying

  633. a jar

  634. of water

  635. will meet

  636. you.

  637. Follow

  638. him

  639. into the

  640. house

  641. that he

  642. enters

  643. and tell

  644. the master

  645. of the

  646. house,

  647. the teacher

  648. says to

  649. you,

  650. where is

  651. the guest

  652. room where

  653. I may

  654. eat the

  655. Passover

  656. with my

  657. disciples?

  658. It's an

  659. amazing

  660. story.

  661. It reveals

  662. Jesus'

  663. foreknowledge,

  664. supernatural

  665. knowledge,

  666. but also

  667. the fact

  668. that he

  669. is in

  670. total

  671. control

  672. of the

  673. situation.

  674. It

  675. shows

  676. that Jesus

  677. is in

  678. full

  679. command

  680. of his

  681. destiny,

  682. his journey

  683. into Jerusalem

  684. and ultimately

  685. toward his

  686. death.

  687. And that's

  688. why Luke

  689. notes in

  690. verse 13

  691. with wonder,

  692. and they

  693. went and

  694. found it

  695. just as he

  696. had told.

  697. And they

  698. prepared the

  699. Passover.

  700. This is in

  701. here to show

  702. us that

  703. Jesus is

  704. not a pawn

  705. in the hand

  706. of Satan

  707. that entered

  708. into Judas

  709. or Judas.

  710. He is not

  711. a hapless

  712. man that

  713. happens to

  714. be in the

  715. wrong place

  716. at the

  717. wrong time.

  718. Jesus is

  719. the Lord

  720. of creation.

  721. He is the

  722. Son of God

  723. in total

  724. control,

  725. fully aware

  726. of all that

  727. is happening

  728. around him,

  729. and he's

  730. heading very

  731. deliberately

  732. to the

  733. cross where

  734. he will

  735. die for the

  736. sins of

  737. his people.

  738. This is

  739. his choice,

  740. and he's

  741. taking those

  742. steps.

  743. And Peter

  744. and John

  745. are preparing

  746. an unblemished

  747. Passover lamb

  748. for supper

  749. as Jesus,

  750. the blameless

  751. lamb of God,

  752. readies himself

  753. for the cross.

  754. And it says

  755. in verse 14

  756. that when the

  757. hour came,

  758. he reclined

  759. at table

  760. and the

  761. apostles

  762. with him.

  763. There's so

  764. much drama

  765. and anticipation

  766. building up

  767. to this meal.

  768. Notice the

  769. way Luke

  770. builds it up.

  771. He drums

  772. up the

  773. expectation.

  774. First,

  775. he told us

  776. in verse 1

  777. that the

  778. feast of

  779. unleavened

  780. bread drew

  781. near,

  782. which is

  783. called

  784. the

  785. Passover.

  786. The

  787. week-long

  788. feast was

  789. approaching,

  790. but not

  791. yet here.

  792. And then

  793. in verse 7

  794. he told us

  795. that then

  796. came the

  797. day of

  798. unleavened

  799. bread,

  800. on which

  801. the Passover

  802. lamb had

  803. to be

  804. sacrificed.

  805. And now

  806. finally in

  807. verse 14,

  808. when the

  809. hour came.

  810. So he

  811. goes from

  812. week to

  813. day to

  814. the very

  815. hour that's

  816. been building

  817. this up.

  818. What is

  819. this moment

  820. that he's

  821. looking forward

  822. to?

  823. And it's

  824. the feast,

  825. and Jesus

  826. is the

  827. guest of

  828. honor,

  829. and he's

  830. reclining at

  831. table,

  832. which shows

  833. that it's

  834. a formal

  835. banquet where

  836. they recline

  837. instead of

  838. sitting,

  839. and his

  840. disciples are

  841. with him.

  842. And Jesus

  843. says to his

  844. disciples in

  845. verse 15,

  846. I have

  847. earnestly

  848. desired to

  849. eat this

  850. Passover with

  851. you before

  852. I suffer.

  853. The

  854. Passover

  855. comes around

  856. every year.

  857. Jesus has

  858. celebrated this

  859. with him

  860. multiple times

  861. already.

  862. Why was

  863. Jesus

  864. particularly

  865. eager to

  866. eat this

  867. Passover?

  868. He tells us

  869. in verse 16,

  870. 4,

  871. I tell you,

  872. I will not

  873. eat of it

  874. until it is

  875. fulfilled in

  876. the kingdom

  877. of God.

  878. This is the

  879. last Passover

  880. meal before

  881. Jesus'

  882. suffering,

  883. his death.

  884. And he will

  885. not get to

  886. celebrate it

  887. again with

  888. them until,

  889. he says,

  890. until it,

  891. until the

  892. Passover is

  893. fulfilled in

  894. the kingdom of

  895. God.

  896. until the

  897. Passover is

  898. completed,

  899. brought to

  900. its intended

  901. end and

  902. fulfillment,

  903. Jesus will

  904. not eat of

  905. it again.

  906. This is

  907. confirmed by

  908. verse 17 and

  909. 18 as well

  910. where he says,

  911. and he took a

  912. cup and when

  913. he had given

  914. thanks he

  915. said,

  916. take this

  917. and divide

  918. it among

  919. yourselves.

  920. For I tell

  921. you that

  922. from now

  923. on I

  924. will not

  925. drink of

  926. the fruit

  927. of the

  928. vine until

  929. the kingdom

  930. of God

  931. comes.

  932. The coming

  933. of the

  934. kingdom of

  935. God parallels

  936. the coming

  937. of the

  938. Son of

  939. Man that

  940. Jesus spoke

  941. of earlier

  942. in Luke

    Luke 21:27

  943. chapter 21

  944. verse 27.

  945. It's a

  946. reference to

  947. his second

  948. coming and

  949. the consummation

  950. of the

  951. kingdom of

  952. God.

  953. Until then,

  954. the kingdom

  955. of God,

  956. until the

  957. kingdom of

  958. God is

  959. fulfilled,

  960. Jesus will

  961. not drink

  962. this Passover

  963. wine or

  964. eat this

  965. Passover

  966. bread with

  967. his disciples

  968. again.

  969. That's why

  970. this meal is

  971. often called

  972. the Last

  973. Supper.

  974. That's true,

  975. but in

  976. another sense,

  977. this meal is

  978. actually the

  979. second to

  980. last supper.

  981. it's the

  982. penultimate

  983. supper because

  984. it foreshadows

  985. the eternal

  986. heavenly banquet

  987. that Jesus is

  988. anticipating and

  989. looking forward to

  990. celebrating with

  991. his disciples.

  992. This is why

  993. Jesus was so

  994. eager,

  995. desirous of

  996. this banquet.

  997. He wants to

  998. savor this

  999. banquet because

  1000. it's the last

  1001. time he'll get

  1002. to enjoy this

  1003. Passover with

  1004. his disciples

  1005. until that

  1006. time.

  1007. he wants to

  1008. enjoy this,

  1009. he looks

  1010. forward to

  1011. this because

  1012. it's to

  1013. him a

  1014. foreshadowing,

  1015. a picture of

  1016. that ultimate

  1017. banquet to

  1018. come.

  1019. I find this

  1020. very moving

  1021. that he says,

  1022. I earnestly

  1023. desire to eat

  1024. this Passover

  1025. with you.

  1026. Let me

  1027. illustrate why

  1028. this way.

  1029. when a man

  1030. takes his

  1031. wife out for

  1032. a date,

  1033. he should

  1034. say,

  1035. hey,

  1036. I reserved

  1037. the table at

  1038. a special

  1039. restaurant so

  1040. we could have

  1041. dinner together

  1042. this Friday

  1043. night.

  1044. I'm not going

  1045. to tell you

  1046. where it is

  1047. yet,

  1048. I don't

  1049. want to

  1050. surprise you,

  1051. but I

  1052. think you'll

  1053. really like

  1054. it.

  1055. I already

  1056. secured the

  1057. babysitters,

  1058. so be ready

  1059. for me when

  1060. I come home

  1061. at 5 p.m.

  1062. He shouldn't

  1063. say,

  1064. hey,

  1065. we don't

  1066. have anything

  1067. better to do

  1068. tonight.

  1069. You don't

  1070. go out to

  1071. eat?

  1072. What are you

  1073. in the mood

  1074. for?

  1075. I'm not

  1076. saying that

  1077. you can't

  1078. ever do

  1079. that,

  1080. but you

  1081. get the

  1082. point.

  1083. The first

  1084. ask shows

  1085. intention

  1086. and care,

  1087. while the

  1088. second ask

  1089. shows laziness

  1090. carelessness.

  1091. And Jesus

  1092. here is

  1093. definitely not

  1094. doing the

  1095. first.

  1096. He's

  1097. definitely not

  1098. doing the

  1099. second ask

  1100. in this

  1101. passage.

  1102. Everything

  1103. has been

  1104. preordained.

  1105. He has

  1106. been eagerly

  1107. anticipating,

  1108. desiring,

  1109. and looking

  1110. forward to

  1111. this banquet.

  1112. He had

  1113. arranged for

  1114. everything to

  1115. happen,

  1116. just as he

  1117. had said,

  1118. and he

  1119. tells these

  1120. disciples,

  1121. these bumbling

  1122. disciples,

  1123. these selfish

  1124. disciples,

  1125. these slow

  1126. to learn

  1127. disciples that

  1128. have been

  1129. pestering him,

  1130. pushing him,

  1131. the very

  1132. reason he's

  1133. headed to

  1134. the cross,

  1135. and he's

  1136. looking eagerly

  1137. forward to

  1138. this moment,

  1139. to eat with

  1140. them.

  1141. the Passover,

  1142. according to

  1143. Exodus 12,

  1144. was supposed to

  1145. be celebrated

  1146. with one's

  1147. own family.

  1148. But here,

  1149. Jesus,

  1150. as the head

  1151. of this new

  1152. household of

  1153. God that he

  1154. is forming,

  1155. he dines with

  1156. his disciples.

  1157. In Luke 18,

    Luke 18:28–30

  1158. verses 28 to

  1159. 30,

  1160. Peter has

  1161. said to

  1162. Jesus,

  1163. see,

  1164. we have left

  1165. our homes

  1166. and followed

  1167. you.

  1168. And Jesus

  1169. said to

  1170. him,

  1171. truly I say

  1172. to you,

  1173. there is

  1174. no one

  1175. who has

  1176. left house

  1177. or wife

  1178. or brothers

  1179. or parents

  1180. or children

  1181. for the sake

  1182. of the kingdom

  1183. of God,

  1184. who will not

  1185. receive many

  1186. times more

  1187. in this time

  1188. and in the

  1189. age to come

  1190. eternal life.

  1191. This scene,

  1192. this last

  1193. supper,

  1194. is an enactment

  1195. of the church,

  1196. the family of

  1197. God.

  1198. Jesus is

  1199. saying in

  1200. this meal,

  1201. you have

  1202. left your

  1203. homes,

  1204. you have

  1205. left your

  1206. families to

  1207. follow me.

  1208. Your home

  1209. is with

  1210. me now.

  1211. You're

  1212. part of

  1213. my family

  1214. now.

  1215. You're

  1216. going to

  1217. be a

  1218. guest

  1219. at the

  1220. eternal

  1221. banquet

  1222. that my

  1223. father's

  1224. preparing.

  1225. That's

  1226. Jesus'

  1227. heart.

  1228. John

  1229. 14,

  1230. 2 to

  1231. 3,

  1232. during the

  1233. same

  1234. Passover,

  1235. last

  1236. Passover meal

  1237. with the

  1238. disciples,

  1239. Jesus

  1240. says this,

  1241. in my

  1242. father's

  1243. house are

  1244. many rooms.

  1245. If it

  1246. were not

  1247. so,

  1248. would I

  1249. have

  1250. told you

  1251. that I

  1252. would go

  1253. to prepare

  1254. a place

  1255. for you?

  1256. And if

  1257. I go

  1258. and prepare

  1259. a place

  1260. for you,

  1261. I will

  1262. come

  1263. again,

  1264. and will

  1265. take you

  1266. to myself,

  1267. that where

  1268. I am,

  1269. you may

  1270. be also.

  1271. Jesus is

  1272. longing to

  1273. be with

  1274. his disciples

  1275. before his

  1276. departure,

  1277. as well as

  1278. his longing

  1279. to celebrate

  1280. this last

  1281. Passover meal

  1282. with him.

  1283. they're

  1284. explained

  1285. by this,

  1286. this is

  1287. what explains

  1288. Jesus'

  1289. earnest desire

  1290. to eat

  1291. the

  1292. Passover

  1293. with

  1294. them.

  1295. And if

  1296. you are

  1297. a child

  1298. of God,

  1299. if you're

  1300. a member

  1301. of the

  1302. family of

  1303. God,

  1304. with the

  1305. same

  1306. eager

  1307. anticipation,

  1308. it's for

  1309. you,

  1310. to join

  1311. you,

  1312. for you to

  1313. join him

  1314. at the

  1315. heavenly

  1316. banquet.

  1317. He is

  1318. earnestly

  1319. desired

  1320. to eat

  1321. this

  1322. Passover

  1323. with

  1324. you.

  1325. Do you

  1326. look forward

  1327. to that?

  1328. Does that

  1329. anticipation

  1330. shape the

  1331. way you

  1332. live now?

  1333. As Jesus

  1334. continues in

  1335. this meal

  1336. with his

  1337. disciples,

  1338. he says

  1339. in verse

  1340. 19,

  1341. and he

  1342. took bread,

  1343. when he

  1344. had given

  1345. thanks,

  1346. he broke

  1347. it and

  1348. gave it

  1349. to them,

  1350. saying,

  1351. this is

  1352. my body

  1353. which is

  1354. given for

  1355. you.

  1356. Do this

  1357. in remembrance

  1358. of me.

  1359. Jesus is

  1360. using

  1361. figurative

  1362. language

  1363. here.

  1364. Scripture

  1365. nowhere

  1366. describes

  1367. the bread

  1368. as

  1369. becoming

  1370. the

  1371. physical

  1372. body

  1373. of

  1374. Christ

  1375. in

  1376. any

  1377. shape

  1378. or

  1379. form.

  1380. Just

  1381. as

  1382. when

  1383. Jesus

  1384. says

  1385. in

  1386. John

    John 10:9

  1387. 10

  1388. verse

  1389. 9,

  1390. I

  1391. am

  1392. the

  1393. door,

  1394. if

  1395. anyone

  1396. enters

  1397. by me,

  1398. he

  1399. will

  1400. be

  1401. saved.

  1402. He

  1403. doesn't

  1404. mean

  1405. by

  1406. that

  1407. he

  1408. is

  1409. a

  1410. literal

  1411. door

  1412. with

  1413. a

  1414. handle,

  1415. but

  1416. he

  1417. is

  1418. the

  1419. door

  1420. to

  1421. heaven

  1422. in a

  1423. figurative

  1424. sense.

  1425. The

  1426. bread

  1427. which

  1428. can

  1429. easily

  1430. be

  1431. broken

  1432. represents

  1433. the

  1434. body

  1435. of

  1436. Christ

  1437. because

  1438. the

  1439. body

  1440. of

  1441. Christ

  1442. will

  1443. soon

  1444. be

  1445. broken

  1446. on

  1447. the

  1448. cross

  1449. for

  1450. the

  1451. spiritual

  1452. nourishment

  1453. and

  1454. salvation

  1455. of

  1456. many.

  1457. God

  1458. That's

  1459. why

  1460. Jesus

  1461. says

  1462. here,

  1463. this

  1464. is

  1465. my

  1466. body

  1467. which

  1468. is

  1469. given

  1470. for

  1471. you.

  1472. This

  1473. is

  1474. my

  1475. body

  1476. which

  1477. is

  1478. given

  1479. on

  1480. your

  1481. behalf.

  1482. There's

  1483. a

  1484. substitutionary

  1485. and

  1486. sacrificial

  1487. aspect

  1488. to what

  1489. Jesus

  1490. is

  1491. talking

  1492. about

  1493. here,

  1494. to

  1495. his

  1496. death

  1497. on

  1498. the

  1499. cross.

  1500. You

  1501. can

  1502. see

  1503. that

  1504. also

  1505. in

  1506. the

  1507. wine

  1508. that

  1509. they

  1510. drink.

  1511. Verse

  1512. 20

  1513. says,

  1514. and

  1515. likewise

  1516. the

  1517. cup

  1518. after

  1519. they

  1520. had

  1521. eaten,

  1522. saying,

  1523. this

  1524. cup

  1525. that is

  1526. for

  1527. you,

  1528. is

  1529. the

  1530. new

  1531. covenant

  1532. in my

  1533. blood.

  1534. And

  1535. who

  1536. is

  1537. Jesus

  1538. speaking

  1539. to?

  1540. For

  1541. whom

  1542. is

  1543. the

  1544. body

  1545. of

  1546. Christ

  1547. broken

  1548. and

  1549. the

  1550. blood

  1551. of

  1552. Christ

  1553. poured

  1554. out?

  1555. Jesus

  1556. is

  1557. speaking

  1558. to

  1559. his

  1560. family,

  1561. to

  1562. his

  1563. disciples,

  1564. to

  1565. his

  1566. followers,

  1567. those

  1568. who

  1569. have

  1570. been

  1571. adopted

  1572. into

  1573. the

  1574. family

  1575. of

  1576. God

  1577. through

  1578. repentance

  1579. and

  1580. faith.

  1581. Because

  1582. sinners,

  1583. rebels

  1584. guilty

  1585. of high

  1586. treason

  1587. cannot

  1588. hope

  1589. to

  1590. join

  1591. the

  1592. heavenly

  1593. banquet

  1594. in the

  1595. kingdom

  1596. of

  1597. God.

  1598. They

  1599. deserve

  1600. to be

  1601. shot

  1602. out

  1603. of

  1604. the

  1605. kingdom

  1606. and

  1607. punished

  1608. for

  1609. their

  1610. rebellion.

  1611. And

  1612. that's

  1613. what we

  1614. all

  1615. deserved.

  1616. But

  1617. God

  1618. in

  1619. Christ

  1620. reconciles

  1621. us

  1622. to

  1623. himself.

  1624. He

  1625. takes

  1626. the

  1627. people

  1628. that

  1629. have

  1630. broken

  1631. their

  1632. covenant

  1633. with

  1634. God

  1635. and

  1636. enters

  1637. into

  1638. a

  1639. new

  1640. covenant

  1641. with

  1642. them

  1643. through

  1644. Jesus.

  1645. And

  1646. that's

  1647. what

  1648. Jesus

  1649. is

  1650. speaking

  1651. of

  1652. here.

  1653. The

  1654. new

  1655. covenant

  1656. is

  1657. an

  1658. allusion

  1659. to

  1660. 31

  1661. verses

  1662. 31

  1663. to

  1664. 33

  1665. where

  1666. God

  1667. promises

  1668. to

  1669. establish

  1670. a new

  1671. covenant

  1672. where

  1673. he

  1674. puts

  1675. the

  1676. law

  1677. of

  1678. God

  1679. into

  1680. people's

  1681. hearts

  1682. to

  1683. transform

  1684. people's

  1685. hearts

  1686. so that

  1687. they

  1688. desire

  1689. to

  1690. and

  1691. follow

  1692. God's

  1693. word

  1694. instead of

  1695. constantly

  1696. rebelling

  1697. and disobeying

  1698. as Israel

  1699. historically

  1700. has done.

  1701. Our

  1702. covenant

  1703. is a

  1704. legally

  1705. binding

  1706. relational

  1707. commitment

  1708. much like

  1709. a marriage

  1710. between

  1711. a man

  1712. and a

  1713. woman

  1714. or the

  1715. relationship

  1716. between

  1717. a parent

  1718. and a

  1719. child.

  1720. That's

  1721. why it's

  1722. not surprising

  1723. that God

  1724. often describes

  1725. himself as

  1726. Israel's

  1727. husband

  1728. or the

  1729. church's

  1730. husband

  1731. and he

  1732. calls

  1733. Israel

  1734. his

  1735. firstborn

  1736. son.

  1737. These are

  1738. very intimate

  1739. and intensive

  1740. relationships

  1741. and they

  1742. also have

  1743. legal aspects

  1744. to it.

  1745. You could

  1746. examine that

  1747. in our

  1748. own

  1749. lives.

  1750. A

  1751. father

  1752. is

  1753. legally

  1754. required

  1755. to

  1756. provide

  1757. for

  1758. his

  1759. child

  1760. just

  1761. as

  1762. husband

  1763. and

  1764. wife

  1765. are

  1766. legally

  1767. joined

  1768. together

  1769. and are

  1770. responsible

  1771. for

  1772. one

  1773. another.

  1774. We

  1775. can

  1776. see

  1777. that

  1778. in

  1779. the

  1780. benefits

  1781. like

  1782. shared

  1783. health

  1784. insurance,

  1785. disability,

  1786. joint

  1787. taxes,

  1788. etc.

  1789. Our

  1790. covenant

  1791. with

  1792. God

  1793. likewise

  1794. is

  1795. intimately

  1796. and

  1797. intensely

  1798. relational

  1799. but it's

  1800. also

  1801. legally

  1802. binding.

  1803. That's

  1804. what a

  1805. covenant

  1806. is.

  1807. We

  1808. have

  1809. duties,

  1810. obligations

  1811. that we

  1812. are to

  1813. perform

  1814. before

  1815. God.

  1816. The

  1817. old

  1818. covenant

  1819. was

  1820. established

  1821. at the

  1822. time of

  1823. the

  1824. Exodus

  1825. when in

  1826. Exodus

    Exodus 24:8

  1827. 24

  1828. verse

  1829. 8

  1830. Moses

  1831. took

  1832. the

  1833. blood

  1834. of

  1835. the

  1836. sacrificed

  1837. oxen

  1838. and

  1839. sprinkled

  1840. it

  1841. on

  1842. the

  1843. people

  1844. setting

  1845. them

  1846. apart

  1847. and

  1848. marking

  1849. them

  1850. as

  1851. people

  1852. who

  1853. are

  1854. holy

  1855. to

  1856. God

  1857. set

  1858. apart

  1859. for

  1860. God's

  1861. special

  1862. purposes.

  1863. But

  1864. in

  1865. the

  1866. new

  1867. covenant

  1868. it

  1869. says

  1870. in

  1871. chapter

  1872. 10

  1873. verses

  1874. 19

  1875. to

  1876. 22

  1877. It's

  1878. the

  1879. sprinkling

  1880. of

  1881. Jesus'

  1882. blood

  1883. that

  1884. established

  1885. the

  1886. new

  1887. covenant

  1888. and

  1889. this

  1890. explains

  1891. a very

  1892. curious

  1893. omission

  1894. in

  1895. this

  1896. passage.

  1897. Notice

  1898. it says

  1899. in

  1900. verse

  1901. 7

  1902. Then

  1903. came

  1904. the

  1905. day

  1906. of

  1907. unleavened

  1908. bread

  1909. on

  1910. which

  1911. the

  1912. Passover

  1913. lamb

  1914. had

  1915. to

  1916. be

  1917. sacrificed.

  1918. You're

  1919. supposed

  1920. to

  1921. sacrifice

  1922. a

  1923. lamb.

  1924. That's

  1925. the

  1926. centerpiece

  1927. of

  1928. the

  1929. meal

  1930. during

  1931. Passover.

  1932. But

  1933. look

  1934. through

  1935. this

  1936. passage.

  1937. There's

  1938. not

  1939. a

  1940. single

  1941. mention

  1942. of

  1943. the

  1944. eating

  1945. of

  1946. the

  1947. lamb

  1948. during

  1949. this

  1950. supper.

  1951. It

  1952. only

  1953. mentions

  1954. the

  1955. bread.

  1956. And

  1957. the

  1958. wine.

  1959. Why

  1960. is

  1961. this

  1962. the

  1963. case?

  1964. It's

  1965. because

  1966. Jesus

  1967. is

  1968. the

  1969. ultimate

  1970. Passover

  1971. lamb.

  1972. Because

  1973. Luke

  1974. wants

  1975. to

  1976. make

  1977. sure

  1978. that

  1979. the

  1980. focus

  1981. as

  1982. we

  1983. read

  1984. this

  1985. account

  1986. is

  1987. not

  1988. on

  1989. the

  1990. lamb

  1991. that

  1992. atones

  1993. but

  1994. on

  1995. Jesus

  1996. that

  1997. atones

  1998. on

  1999. the

  2000. cross.

  2001. When

  2002. the

  2003. Old

  2004. Testament

  2005. people

  2006. of

  2007. God

  2008. Israel

  2009. they

  2010. were

  2011. enslaved

  2012. in

  2013. Egypt

  2014. God

  2015. delivered

  2016. them

  2017. with

  2018. mighty

  2019. signs

  2020. like

  2021. the

  2022. Exodus

  2023. and

  2024. this

  2025. is

  2026. what

  2027. the

  2028. Passover

  2029. celebrates

  2030. the

  2031. last

  2032. and

  2033. the

  2034. greatest

  2035. sign

  2036. was

  2037. that

  2038. of

  2039. the

  2040. Passover

  2041. which

  2042. is

  2043. recorded

  2044. in

  2045. Exodus

  2046. 12.

  2047. Some

  2048. of

  2049. you

  2050. already

  2051. know

  2052. that

  2053. as

  2054. Egypt

  2055. was

  2056. oppressing

  2057. Israel

  2058. which

  2059. God

  2060. calls

  2061. his

  2062. firstborn

  2063. son

  2064. in

  2065. Exodus

    Exodus 4:22

  2066. chapter

  2067. 4

  2068. verse

  2069. 22

  2070. God

  2071. strikes

  2072. down

  2073. all

  2074. the

  2075. firstborn

  2076. sons

  2077. in

  2078. the

  2079. land

  2080. of

  2081. Egypt

  2082. both

  2083. man

  2084. and

  2085. animals

  2086. but

  2087. God

  2088. spares

  2089. the

  2090. Israelites

  2091. who

  2092. according

  2093. to

  2094. his

  2095. instruction

  2096. slaughtered

  2097. a

  2098. lamb

  2099. without

  2100. blemish

  2101. and

  2102. took

  2103. its

  2104. blood

  2105. and

  2106. daubed

  2107. it

  2108. smeared

  2109. it

  2110. on

  2111. the

  2112. lintels

  2113. of

  2114. the

  2115. door

  2116. posts

  2117. the

  2118. Lord

  2119. God

  2120. then

  2121. saw

  2122. the

  2123. blood

  2124. of

  2125. the

  2126. lamb

  2127. on

  2128. the

  2130. and

  2131. as

  2132. he

  2133. was

  2134. going

  2135. through

  2136. Egypt

  2137. to

  2138. kill

  2139. the

  2140. firstborns

  2141. he

  2142. passed

  2143. over

  2144. the

  2145. Israelite

  2146. households

  2147. and

  2148. after

  2149. that

  2150. great

  2151. judgment

  2152. Israel

  2153. was

  2154. finally

  2155. liberated

  2156. from

  2157. its

  2158. slavery

  2159. in

  2160. Egypt

  2161. and

  2162. so

  2163. this

  2165. Passover

  2166. lamb

  2167. that

  2168. ransomed

  2169. people

  2170. that's

  2171. who

  2172. Jesus

  2173. is

  2174. that

  2175. Passover

  2176. lamb

  2177. couldn't

  2178. in an

  2179. ultimate

  2180. and real

  2181. sense

  2182. atone

  2183. for the

  2184. sins

  2185. of

  2186. human

  2188. but

  2189. it

  2190. pointed

  2191. to

  2192. Jesus

  2193. it

  2194. foreshadowed

  2195. Jesus

  2196. and

  2197. that's

  2198. why

  2199. John

  2200. 1

  2201. 29

  2202. says

  2203. Jesus

  2204. is

  2205. the

  2206. lamb

  2207. of

  2208. God

  2209. who

  2210. takes

  2211. away

  2212. the

  2213. sin

  2214. of

  2215. the

  2216. world

  2217. that's

  2218. why

  2219. 1

  2220. Corinthians

  2221. 5

  2222. 7

  2223. says

  2224. Christ

  2225. is

  2226. our

  2227. Passover

  2228. lamb

  2229. who

  2230. has

  2231. been

  2232. sacrificed

  2233. because

  2234. Christ

  2235. the

  2236. lamb

  2237. of

  2238. God

  2239. has

  2240. been

  2241. sacrificed

  2242. in

  2243. our

  2244. place

  2245. we

  2246. even

  2247. though

  2248. we

  2249. are

  2250. sinners

  2251. deserving

  2252. of

  2253. eternal

  2254. death

  2255. can be

  2256. spared

  2257. because

  2258. Christ's

  2259. body

  2260. was

  2261. broken

  2262. because

  2263. his

  2264. blood

  2265. was

  2266. poured

  2267. out

  2268. we

  2269. do not

  2270. have to

  2271. shed

  2272. blood

  2273. or be

  2274. broken

  2275. God

  2276. man

  2277. this

  2278. man

  2279. man

  2280. man

  2281. asserts

  2282. himself

  2283. against

  2284. God

  2285. and

  2286. puts

  2287. himself

  2288. where

  2289. only

  2290. God

  2291. deserves

  2292. to

  2293. be

  2294. God

  2295. sacrifices

  2296. himself

  2297. for

  2298. man

  2299. and

  2300. puts

  2301. himself

  2302. where

  2303. only

  2304. man

  2305. deserves

  2306. to

  2307. be

  2308. man

  2309. claims

  2310. prerogatives

  2311. that belong

  2312. to God

  2313. alone

  2314. God

  2315. accepts

  2316. penalties

  2317. that belong

  2318. to man

  2319. alone

  2320. this

  2321. is the

  2322. great

  2323. exchange

  2324. the

  2325. sinless

  2326. son of

  2327. man

  2328. died

  2329. in the

  2330. place

  2331. of

  2332. sinful

  2333. men

  2334. and if

  2335. we only

  2336. knew

  2337. what

  2338. kind

  2339. of

  2340. person

  2341. Jesus

  2342. really

  2343. is

  2344. how

  2345. glorious

  2346. he

  2347. is

  2348. how

  2349. holy

  2350. and

  2351. worthy

  2352. he

  2353. is

  2354. how

  2355. good

  2356. he

  2357. is

  2358. and

  2359. if

  2360. we

  2361. only

  2362. knew

  2363. how

  2364. depraved

  2365. we

  2366. are

  2367. how

  2368. sinful

  2369. we

  2370. are

  2371. in

  2372. the

  2373. core

  2374. and

  2375. the

  2376. depth

  2377. of

  2378. our

  2379. being

  2380. how

  2381. selfish

  2382. we

  2383. are

  2384. we

  2385. will

  2386. never

  2387. cease

  2388. to

  2389. stand

  2390. in

  2391. awe

  2392. of

  2393. this

  2394. great

  2395. exchange

  2396. that's

  2397. what

  2398. Jesus

  2399. is

  2400. already

  2401. looking

  2402. ahead

  2403. to

  2404. in

  2405. verses

  2406. 21

  2407. to

  2408. 22

  2409. but

  2410. behold

  2411. the

  2412. hand

  2413. of

  2414. him

  2415. who

  2416. betrays

  2417. me

  2418. is

  2419. with

  2420. me

  2421. on

  2422. the

  2423. table

  2424. for

  2425. the

  2426. son

  2427. of

  2428. man

  2429. goes

  2430. as

  2431. it

  2432. has

  2433. been

  2434. determined

  2435. but

  2436. woe

  2437. to

  2438. that

  2439. man

  2440. by

  2441. whom

  2442. he

  2443. is

  2444. betrayed

  2445. look at

  2446. how

  2447. verse

  2448. 22

  2449. so aptly

  2450. captures

  2451. both

  2452. divine

  2453. sovereignty

  2454. and

  2455. human

  2456. responsibility

  2457. for

  2458. the

  2459. son

  2460. of

  2461. man

  2462. goes

  2463. as

  2464. it

  2465. has

  2466. been

  2467. determined

  2468. who

  2469. determined

  2470. this

  2471. this

  2472. is

  2473. in

  2474. the

  2475. perfect

  2476. passive

  2477. tense

  2478. this

  2479. it's

  2480. been

  2481. determined

  2482. this

  2483. assumes

  2484. God

  2485. as

  2486. the

  2487. agent

  2488. of

  2489. the

  2490. act

  2491. it's

  2492. what

  2493. Greek

  2494. grammarians

  2495. call

  2496. the

  2497. divine

  2498. passive

  2499. it's

  2500. been

  2501. predetermined

  2502. predestined

  2503. by

  2504. God

  2505. that

  2506. Jesus

  2507. Christ

  2508. his

  2509. son

  2510. would

  2511. die

  2512. on

  2513. the

  2514. cross

  2515. for

  2516. the

  2517. sins

  2518. of

  2519. his

  2520. people

  2521. and

  2522. be

  2523. raised

  2524. from

  2525. the

  2526. dead

  2527. for

  2528. their

  2529. salvation

  2530. but

  2531. this

  2532. does

  2533. not

  2534. mean

  2535. that

  2536. Judas

  2537. is

  2538. not

  2539. responsible

  2540. Jesus

  2541. says

  2542. woe

  2543. pity

  2544. to

  2545. that

  2546. man

  2547. by

  2548. whom

  2549. he

  2550. is

  2551. betrayed

  2552. it's

  2553. Judas

  2554. who

  2555. betrayed

  2556. Jesus

  2557. and

  2558. he

  2559. will

  2560. be

  2561. held

  2562. accountable

  2563. to

  2564. God

  2565. for

  2566. his

  2567. treachery

  2568. and

  2569. so

  2570. Jesus

  2571. says

  2572. woe

  2573. a pity

  2574. what a pity

  2575. for

  2576. Judas

  2577. and

  2578. the word

  2579. betray

  2580. which

  2581. literally

  2582. means

  2583. to

  2584. hand

  2585. over

  2586. or

  2587. to

  2588. deliver

  2589. up

  2590. to

  2591. give

  2592. up

  2593. is

  2594. a

  2595. key

  2596. word

  2597. that's

  2598. repeated

  2599. throughout

  2600. the

  2601. gospel

  2602. of

  2603. Luke

  2604. and

  2605. it's

  2606. the

  2607. word

  2608. that

  2609. is

  2610. consistently

  2611. used

  2612. to

  2613. refer

  2614. to

  2615. Jesus

  2616. betrayal

  2617. and

  2618. death

  2619. and

  2620. interestingly

  2621. it's

  2622. the

  2623. very

  2624. same

  2625. word

  2626. that

  2627. the

  2628. New

  2629. Testament

  2630. authors

  2631. pick

  2632. up

  2633. to

  2634. describe

  2635. how

  2636. God

  2637. the

  2638. father

  2639. delivered

  2640. up

  2641. handed

  2642. over

  2643. his

  2644. own

  2645. son

  2646. this

  2647. is

  2648. in

  2649. Romans

  2650. 4

  2651. 25

  2652. Jesus

  2653. our

  2654. Lord

  2655. was

  2656. delivered

  2657. up

  2658. for

  2659. our

  2660. trespasses

  2661. and

  2662. raised

  2663. for

  2664. our

  2665. justification

  2666. Romans

  2667. 8

  2668. 32

  2669. says

  2670. he

  2671. who

  2672. did

  2673. not

  2674. spare

  2675. his

  2676. own

  2677. son

  2678. but

  2679. gave

  2680. him

  2681. up

  2682. or

  2683. delivered

  2684. him

  2685. up

  2686. for

  2687. us

  2688. all

  2689. how

  2690. will

  2691. he

  2692. not

  2693. also

  2694. with

  2695. him

  2696. graciously

  2697. give

  2698. us

  2699. all

  2700. things

  2701. and

  2702. as

  2703. Luke

  2704. himself

  2705. puts

  2706. it

  2707. in

  2708. his

  2709. sequel

  2710. Acts

  2711. 2

  2712. 23

  2713. this

  2714. Jesus

  2715. delivered

  2716. up

  2717. into

  2718. the

  2719. definite

  2720. plan

  2721. and

  2722. foreknowledge

  2723. of

  2724. God

  2725. you

  2726. crucified

  2727. and

  2728. killed

  2729. by the

  2730. hands

  2731. of

  2732. lawless

  2733. men

  2734. the

  2735. hands

  2736. of

  2737. lawless

  2738. men

  2739. the

  2740. hands

  2741. of

  2742. Judas

  2743. the

  2744. traitor

  2745. even

  2746. the

  2747. hands

  2748. of

  2749. Satan

  2750. himself

  2751. all

  2752. of

  2753. those

  2754. without

  2755. exception

  2756. play

  2757. into

  2758. God's

  2759. sovereign

  2760. hands

  2761. God

  2762. and

  2763. that

  2764. should

  2765. be

  2766. a

  2767. comfort

  2768. to

  2769. us

  2770. no

  2771. wind

  2772. of

  2773. fortune

  2774. no

  2775. whim

  2776. of

  2777. men

  2778. can

  2779. alter

  2780. the

  2781. course

  2782. of

  2783. human

  2784. history

  2785. can

  2786. alter

  2787. God's

  2788. sovereign

  2789. control

  2790. over

  2791. your

  2792. life

  2793. yes

  2794. you're

  2795. responsible

  2796. for

  2797. your

  2798. actions

  2799. but

  2800. everything

  2801. you do

  2802. whether

  2803. you are

  2804. for

  2805. God

  2806. or

  2807. against

  2808. God

  2809. ultimately

  2810. plays

  2811. into

  2812. his

  2813. sovereign

  2814. hands

  2815. that's

  2816. why

  2817. it's

  2818. a

  2819. comfort

  2820. to

  2821. believers

  2822. because

  2823. for

  2824. a

  2825. Christian

  2826. seeing

  2827. God's

  2828. kingdom

  2829. come

  2830. on

  2831. earth

  2832. as

  2833. it

  2834. is

  2835. heaven

  2836. seeing

  2837. God's

  2838. will

  2839. fulfilled

  2840. here

  2841. in

  2842. our

  2843. lives

  2844. that's

  2845. our

  2846. greatest

  2847. desire

  2848. and

  2849. if

  2850. that's

  2851. the

  2852. case

  2853. then

  2854. we

  2855. can

  2856. take

  2857. comfort

  2858. because

  2859. that

  2860. desire

  2861. will

  2862. be

  2863. fulfilled

  2864. our

  2865. goal

  2866. will

  2867. be

  2868. accomplished

  2869. because

  2870. God's

  2871. plan

  2872. will

  2873. prevail

  2874. in

  2875. the

  2876. end

  2877. but

  2878. this

  2879. passage

  2880. leaves

  2881. no

  2882. room

  2883. for

  2884. resignation

  2885. and

  2886. passivity

  2887. Jesus

  2888. gives

  2889. us

  2890. a

  2891. command

  2892. here

  2893. and

  2894. I

  2895. think

  2896. this

  2897. is

  2898. our

  2899. main

  2900. exhortation

  2901. verse

  2902. 19

  2903. do

  2904. this

  2905. in

  2906. remembrance

  2907. of

  2908. me

  2909. this

  2910. is

  2911. not

  2912. a

  2913. re-sacrifice

  2914. of

  2915. Jesus

  2916. on

  2917. the

  2918. altar

  2919. but

  2920. it's

  2921. a

  2922. remembrance

  2923. of

  2924. the

  2925. once

  2926. and

  2927. for

  2928. all

  3102. we

  3168. will

  3169. be

  3170. despised

  3171. as

  3172. he

  3173. was

  3174. it's

  3175. by

  3176. remembering

  3177. the

  3178. gospel

  3179. that we

  3180. live

  3181. faithfully

  3182. to

  3183. Christ

  3184. and

  3185. that's

  3186. why

  3187. we

  3188. gather

  3189. regularly

  3190. as

  3191. it

  3192. says

  3193. in

  3194. Hebrews

  3195. 3

  3196. we

  3197. exhort

  3198. one

  3199. another

  3200. every

  3201. day

  3202. as

  3203. long

  3204. it

  3205. is

  3206. called

  3207. today

  3208. as

  3209. it

  3210. says

  3211. in

  3212. Hebrews

  3213. 10

  3214. we

  3215. do

  3216. not

  3217. neglect

  3218. meeting

  3219. together

  3220. but

  3221. we

  3222. encourage

  3223. one

  3224. another

  3225. why

  3226. because

  3227. sin

  3228. has

  3229. a

  3230. hardening

  3231. and

  3232. numbing

  3233. effect

  3234. on

  3235. our

  3236. hearts

  3237. we

  3238. are

  3239. forgetful

  3240. people

  3241. we

  3242. can

  3243. drift

  3244. into

  3245. unbelief

  3246. that's

  3247. why

  3248. we

  3249. must

  3250. take

  3251. care

  3252. to

  3253. remember

  3254. God's

  3255. truth

  3256. we

  3257. need

  3258. to

  3259. exhort

  3260. one

  3261. another

  3262. remind

  3263. each

  3264. other

  3265. and

  3266. that's

  3267. why

  3268. we're

  3269. here

  3270. that's

  3271. why

  3272. every

  3273. week

  3274. 52

  3275. Sundays

  3276. of the

  3277. year

  3278. we

  3279. proclaim

  3280. Christ

  3281. crucified

  3282. from

  3283. this

  3284. pulpit

  3285. that's

  3286. why

  3287. every

  3288. Sunday

  3289. 52

  3290. Sundays

  3291. of the

  3292. year

  3293. we

  3294. celebrate

  3295. the

  3296. Lord's

  3297. supper

  3298. to

  3299. remember

  3300. what

  3301. Christ

  3302. did

  3303. for

  3304. us

  3305. to

  3306. proclaim

  3307. what

  3308. Christ

  3309. did

  3310. for

  3311. us

  3312. and

  3313. for

  3314. those

  3315. of

  3316. you

  3317. who

  3318. are

  3319. not

  3320. yet

  3321. followers

  3322. of

  3323. Christ

  3324. we'll

  3325. celebrate

  3326. the

  3327. Lord's

  3328. supper

  3329. at the

  3330. end

  3331. of

  3332. our

  3333. service

  3334. but

  3335. you

  3336. will

  3337. not

  3338. be

  3339. able

  3340. to

  3341. partake

  3342. because

  3343. the

  3344. Lord's

  3345. supper

  3346. is

  3347. a

  3348. picture

  3349. of

  3350. your

  3351. inclusion

  3352. in

  3353. the

  3354. family

  3355. of

  3356. God

  3357. that

  3358. you

  3359. have

  3360. believed

  3361. in

  3362. Jesus

  3363. that

  3364. you

  3365. are

  3366. partaking

  3367. in

  3368. the

  3369. body

  3370. broken

  3371. for

  3372. you

  3373. and

  3374. the

  3375. blood

  3376. poured

  3377. out

  3378. for

  3379. you

  3380. that's

  3381. what

  3382. that

  3383. signifies

  3384. it

  3385. serves

  3386. to

  3387. assure

  3388. God's

  3389. people

  3390. that

  3391. they

  3392. are

  3393. indeed

  3394. in

  3395. the

  3396. people

  3397. in

  3398. the

  3399. family

  3400. of

  3401. God

  3402. but

  3403. don't

  3404. take

  3405. this

  3406. as

  3407. an

  3408. excluding

  3409. gesture

  3410. receive

  3411. this

  3412. as

  3413. our

  3416. you

  3417. to

  3419. to

  3420. Jesus

  3421. because

  3422. Jesus

  3423. says

  3425. John

  3427. 35

  3430. I

  3434. of

  3435. life

  3436. whoever

  3437. comes

  3438. to

  3439. me

  3440. shall

  3441. not

  3442. hunger

  3443. and

  3444. whoever

  3445. believes

  3446. in

  3447. me

  3448. shall

  3449. never

  3450. thirst

  3451. but

  3452. I

  3453. said

  3454. to

  3455. you

  3456. that

  3457. you

  3458. have

  3459. seen

  3460. me

  3461. and

  3462. yet

  3463. do

  3464. not

  3465. believe

  3466. all

  3467. that

  3468. the

  3469. father

  3470. gives

  3471. me

  3472. will

  3473. come

  3474. to

  3475. me

  3476. and

  3477. whoever

  3478. me

  3479. I

  3480. will

  3481. never

  3482. cast

  3484. this

  3485. is

  3486. our

  3504. the

  3509. to

  3510. reflect

  3511. on

  3512. that

  3513. and

  3514. let

  3515. thank

  3516. you
