  1. Luke 22, verses 24 to 38.

    Luke 22:24–38

  2. A dispute also arose among them as to which of them was to be regarded as the greatest.

  3. And he said to them, the kings of the Gentiles exercise lordship over them,

  4. and those in authority over them are called benefactors.

  5. But not so with you.

  6. Rather, let the greatest among you become as the youngest and the leader as one who serves.

  7. For who is the greater, one who reclines at table or one who serves?

  8. Is it not the one who reclines at table?

  9. But I am among you as the one who serves.

  10. You are those who have stayed with me in my trials,

  11. and I assign to you as my father assigned to me a kingdom,

  12. that you may eat and drink at my table in my kingdom

  13. and sit on thrones judging the twelve tribes of Israel.

  14. Simon, Simon, behold, Satan demanded to have you,

  15. that he might sift you like wheat.

  16. But I have prayed for you, that your faith may not fail.

  17. And when you have turned again, strengthen your brothers.

  18. Peter said to him, Lord, I am ready to go with you both to prison and to death.

  19. Jesus said, I tell you, Peter,

  20. the rooster will not crow this day until you deny three times that you know me.

  21. And he said to them,

  22. When I sent you out with no money bag or knapsack or sandals,

  23. did you lack anything?

  24. They said nothing.

  25. He said to them,

  26. But now let the one who has a money bag take it,

  27. and likewise a knapsack.

  28. And let the one who has no sword sell his cloak and buy one.

  29. For I tell you that this scripture must be fulfilled in me.

  30. And he was numbered with the transgressors.

  31. For what is written about me has its fulfillment.

  32. And they said,

  33. Look, Lord, here are two swords.

  34. And he said to them,

  35. It is enough.

  36. This is God's holy and authoritative word.

  37. When someone is on his or her deathbed,

  38. there's a solemnity to those last moments,

  39. those final moments.

  40. And likely that person is going to be very selective with the words that he or she says,

  41. very intentional about the people that he spends time with.

  42. And we see a similar thing going on here in our passage,

  43. because Jesus is preparing for his death.

  44. He's impending death on the cross.

  45. He's gathered his 12 apostles to have a final Passover meal with them.

  46. And these are his parting remarks.

  47. His final instruction on what it means to be a Christian,

  48. what it means to be a follower of Christ,

  49. a disciple of Christ.

  50. And so we ought to all the more pay attention to what he tells us here.

  51. And the main point of this passage is this,

  52. that Christ's service, intercession, and suffering

  53. enable and exemplify Christian discipleship.

  54. And first we're going to look at Christ's service,

  55. and then Christ's intercession, and Christ's suffering.

  56. Let's look first at Christ's service in verses 24 to 30.

  57. In last week's passage, if you remember,

  58. Jesus told his disciples that the hand of him who betrays him,

  59. betrays me, he said, is with me on the table.

  60. That's a shocking thing to say,

  61. because to have table fellowship with someone,

  62. to eat this intimate meal with someone,

  63. is a gesture of trust.

  64. It's really you're saying that these are people,

  65. my trusted companions, my friends.

  66. And yet out of that intimate circle,

  67. there is a hand that is going to betray Jesus.

  68. And so it's no surprise that it says in verse 23 of chapter 22,

  69. the disciples began to question one another,

  70. which of them it would be that is going to do this.

  71. It's not me.

  72. Maybe it's you.

  73. You've been really quiet today.

  74. And it's not hard to imagine how that conversation

  75. then erupts into this in verse 24.

  76. A dispute also arose among them

  77. as to which of them was to be regarded as the greatest.

  78. I can imagine the scene.

  79. It's who among us will betray Jesus?

  80. Well, certainly not me.

  81. I'm the most loyal and important disciple of the 12.

  82. That's why Jesus always sends me out on his special missions.

  83. You're the most important?

  84. Certainly not.

  85. I'm the best preacher.

  86. I'm the best organizer.

  87. Did you open the eyes of the blind?

  88. Well, I did.

  89. And then you could see Peter and John

  90. maybe rearing their heads and,

  91. well, I think we have you all beat.

  92. Were you there at the transfiguration

  93. when Jesus was transformed before our very eyes

  94. into his glorious heavenly self?

  95. So apparently this was one of the favorite subjects

  96. to discuss among the disciples

  97. in the same way New Englanders always like to discuss

  98. who's the greatest quarterback, right?

  99. They're arguing who's the greatest disciple

  100. because they argued about this earlier

  101. in Luke chapter 9, verses 46 to 48 as well.

    Luke 9:46–48

  102. And Luke chooses a very colorful word

  103. to describe this argument.

  104. He says that a dispute arose among them.

  105. The word dispute in the Greek,

  106. the original Greek word,

  107. it's a compound word that literally means

  108. love of victory, love of glory.

  109. They are seeking to triumph over each other,

  110. to outshine each other.

  111. They want to one up all the other disciples.

  112. They want to be the greatest.

  113. But Jesus shows them another way in verses 25 to 26.

  114. And he said to them,

  115. the kings of the Gentiles exercise lordship over them,

  116. and those in authority over them

  117. are called the benefactors.

  118. Jesus uses many words here to describe

  119. those who were prominent and powerful

  120. among the Gentiles.

  121. Kings who exercise lordship,

  122. those in authority,

  123. and benefactors.

  124. That's probably the most confusing term used here

  125. because benefactor sounds very generous

  126. and benevolent, right?

  127. In English, it's a positive term

  128. in the way we use it.

  129. But in its original usage here in the Bible,

  130. it can refer not just to good people,

  131. but also to tyrants.

  132. It's a term that designates class,

  133. people who claim to be the patrons of society,

  134. the celebrities,

  135. those who have power and position

  136. that can bestow favor upon people.

  137. And they believe,

  138. they style themselves as benefactors,

  139. saying that you all,

  140. you commoners,

  141. have your livelihood because of us.

  142. They were the benefactors.

  143. And Gentile rulers set themselves

  144. over their subjects,

  145. lording it over them

  146. and styling themselves to be such patrons.

  147. But Jesus tells his disciples in verse 26,

  148. but not so with you.

  149. In the sentence,

  150. in the Greek,

  151. again,

  152. the pronoun you

  153. is fronted for emphasis.

  154. So it's literally,

  155. but you,

  156. not so.

  157. But you are not to be so.

  158. All the rulers in the world

  159. might behave that way,

  160. but you,

  161. my disciples,

  162. are not to do that.

  163. Rather,

  164. Jesus says,

  165. let the greatest among you

  166. become as the youngest

  167. and the leader as one who serves.

  168. Notice Jesus doesn't say that

  169. there ought to be no leaders.

  170. He assumes that there are leaders.

  171. The Bible consistently affirms

  172. healthy leadership as a good thing.

  173. For example,

  174. Hebrews 13,

    Hebrews 13:7

  175. verse 7 says,

  176. Obey your leaders

  177. and submit to them,

  178. for they are keeping watch

  179. over your souls

  180. as those who will have

  181. to give an account.

  182. Let them do this with joy

  183. and not with groaning,

  184. for that would be

  185. of no advantage to you.

  186. So Jesus is not

  187. discounting leadership.

  188. Rather,

  189. he is here defining it,

  190. what it should look like.

  191. In the ancient world,

  192. the younger people

  193. got the most menial tasks

  194. and they had to serve

  195. the older people.

  196. And that's actually

  197. not just in the ancient world.

  198. Things haven't changed

  199. too much, right?

  200. That's the case

  201. even in our

  202. supposedly egalitarian society.

  203. Right?

  204. Rookies on sports teams

  205. have to grab the bagels

  206. and the newspapers

  207. for their teammates.

  208. They have to perform

  209. other embarrassing acts

  210. like wearing, you know,

  211. children's backpacks,

  212. Barbie doll backpacks

  213. to their games.

  214. Right?

  215. This is what I read.

  216. Junior,

  217. junior,

  218. junior office members,

  219. junior office members

  220. that are new to the office,

  221. they are tasked

  222. with taking meeting notes,

  223. right?

  224. And getting the coffee,

  225. fetching the food.

  226. The more senior members

  227. will not deign to do.

  228. Freshmen in high school,

  229. right?

  230. Freshmen in college

  231. are often dismissively treated,

  232. turn into memes,

  233. and excluded

  234. from certain social scenes,

  235. right?

  236. And privileges.

  237. But Jesus instructs

  238. his disciples

  239. not to exploit

  240. the seniority

  241. and authority

  242. to their selfish advantage.

  243. The most senior person

  244. should serve even

  245. like the most junior person.

  246. That means Christian leaders

  247. in the workplace

  248. should never talk down

  249. to their subordinates.

  250. They should never belittle

  251. other people's gifts

  252. and their contribution.

  253. God calls Christian men

  254. to be leaders

  255. in their homes.

  256. But a Christian husband

  257. who does not deign

  258. to wash dishes

  259. or do laundry

  260. because he sees them

  261. as beneath his dignity

  262. is not practicing

  263. Christian leadership.

  264. That's worldly leadership.

  265. a Christian husband

  266. who speaks condescendingly

  267. to his wife

  268. that doesn't listen

  269. to his wife

  270. but makes self-serving decisions

  271. is not practicing

  272. Christian leadership.

  273. That's worldly leadership.

  274. A Christian father

  275. who does not deign

  276. to play with his children

  277. to indulge them

  278. that refuses to change diapers

  279. because that's beneath his dignity

  280. is not practicing

  281. Christian leadership.

  282. A Christian pastor

  283. who avoids meeting

  284. with counseling

  285. the most difficult members

  286. who only meets with members

  287. who tithe the most

  288. who serve the most

  289. is not practicing

  290. Christian leadership.

  291. That's worldly leadership.

  292. The leaders among God's people

  293. should not be pulling rank

  294. on other church members.

  295. They should never use their authority

  296. to bully people into submission.

  297. They should never resort

  298. to shaming

  299. or blame shifting

  300. to maintain control

  301. and to protect themselves.

  302. This is why

  303. when we appoint our leaders

  304. we try to make a point

  305. that when we appoint our deacons

  306. we give them as gifts

  307. towels

  308. literal towels

  309. with our church logo

  310. emblazoned on it

  311. to remind them

  312. that they are not receiving

  313. a title

  314. that comes with a set

  315. of entitlements

  316. but that they are receiving

  317. a towel of service

  318. in the same way

  319. Jesus took the towel

  320. to wash the feet

  321. of his disciples.

  322. That's what it means

  323. to be a deacon.

  324. This is why

  325. when we ordain elders

  326. we give them a Bible

  327. and not a robe

  328. or a gavel

  329. to remind them

  330. that they are not

  331. the law.

  332. God's word

  333. is the law

  334. and they have authority

  335. in the church

  336. only insofar

  337. as they submit

  338. to God's word

  339. and apply what

  340. God's word teaches.

  341. They're servants

  342. ministers of God's word.

  343. Let the greatest

  344. among you

  345. become as the youngest

  346. and the leader

  347. as one who serves.

  348. Jesus is not

  349. nullifying authority

  350. but he is

  351. qualifying authority.

  352. Christian leadership

  353. is therefore

  354. to be characterized

  355. by Christ-like humility

  356. and service

  357. and not by a fragile

  358. approval craving

  359. and power grabbing

  360. ego.

  361. That's why

  362. 1 Peter 5

  363. specifically exhorts

  364. elders of the church

  365. to exercise oversight

  366. without domineering.

  367. And why

  368. should Christian leadership

  369. look like this?

  370. Jesus gives us

  371. the reason

  372. in verse 27

  373. for

  374. for

  375. who is the greater

  376. one who reclines

  377. at table

  378. or one who serves?

  379. Is it not the one

  380. who reclines

  381. at table?

  382. But I

  383. am among you

  384. as the one

  385. who serves.

  386. Jesus is asking

  387. a rhetorical question

  388. that has an obvious

  389. answer.

  390. When you go

  391. to a restaurant

  392. what does the

  393. power dynamic

  394. look like

  395. at the restaurant?

  396. There's a model,

  397. right?

  398. A truism

  399. among service

  400. providers.

  401. The customer

  402. is always right.

  403. It's not true

  404. but that's how

  405. they are taught

  406. to serve.

  407. Customer is king.

  408. It points

  409. to the importance

  410. of catering

  411. to the customer's

  412. expectations

  413. to ensure

  414. their satisfaction.

  415. It makes it obvious

  416. the one who waits

  417. at the table.

  418. The server

  419. does the bidding

  420. of the one

  421. who reclines

  422. at table.

  423. The one who is

  424. eating,

  425. the one who's

  426. reclining at table

  427. is the greater

  428. one.

  429. But,

  430. Jesus says,

  431. but I am

  432. among you

  433. as the one

  434. who serves.

  435. In the same way

  436. that Jesus

  437. emphasized the pronoun

  438. you in verse 26,

  439. but you are not so.

  440. He says here

  441. in verse 27,

  442. I,

  443. but I am

  444. among you

  445. as the one

  446. who serves.

  447. The one

  448. who reclines

  449. is greater

  450. than the one

  451. who serves.

  452. And if anyone

  453. deserves to recline

  454. at table

  455. to be served

  456. by the rest,

  457. that's Jesus.

  458. But he says,

  459. I'm the messianic king.

  460. I'm the son of God.

  461. I'm the savior

  462. of the world.

  463. But I,

  464. but I myself

  465. am among you

  466. as the one

  467. who serves.

  468. That's why

  469. Christian leadership

  470. is characterized

  471. by service.

  472. Because Christ's

  473. service

  474. enables and

  475. exemplifies

  476. Christian discipleship.

  477. Jesus,

  478. think about this,

  479. Jesus is the

  480. holy one,

  481. the sinless

  482. lamb of God,

  483. yet he died

  484. on the cross

  485. in the place

  486. of sinners.

  487. He's the son of God,

  488. yet he

  489. took on

  490. human flesh,

  491. became a son of man

  492. to live,

  493. to represent us.

  494. he is the king,

  495. but he served

  496. with his life

  497. and with his death.

  498. That's true greatness.

  499. That's

  500. Christian leadership.

  501. That means

  502. Christian leaders,

  503. I didn't fully

  504. understand this

  505. when I

  506. volunteered

  507. to become

  508. a Christian leader.

  509. and so many

  510. people,

  511. and I'm still

  512. learning this,

  513. and so many

  514. people don't

  515. understand this

  516. when they seek

  517. positions of

  518. authority

  519. in the church.

  520. Christian leaders

  521. are called

  522. to suffer

  523. at the hands

  524. of those

  525. whom they serve.

  526. They're called

  527. to receive

  528. criticisms,

  529. even unfair

  530. ones,

  531. graciously.

  532. they are called

  533. to heal

  534. the people

  535. who hurt

  536. them.

  537. They're called

  538. to be slandered

  539. by the very

  540. people that

  541. they counsel.

  542. They're called

  543. to give

  544. to people

  545. who give

  546. nothing back.

  547. They are called

  548. to teach people

  549. who will not

  550. listen.

  551. They're called

  552. to endure

  553. beatings

  554. and jail

  555. terms,

  556. not to

  557. protect themselves,

  558. but to protect

  559. the people

  560. that God

  561. entrusted to

  562. them.

  563. They are called

  564. to love

  565. people

  566. who don't

  567. appreciate

  568. them.

  569. They're called

  570. to serve

  571. people that

  572. want to

  573. replace

  574. them.

  575. Why?

  576. Because that's

  577. what Christ

  578. did.

  579. That's how

  580. Christ lived

  581. through

  582. humiliations

  583. and

  584. sufferings.

  585. Knowing well

  586. that this is

  587. not an easy

  588. command to

  589. obey,

  590. Jesus provides

  591. further

  592. motivation in

  593. verses 28

  594. to 30.

  595. You are

  596. those who

  597. have stayed

  598. with me

  599. in my

  600. trials,

  601. and I

  602. assign to

  603. you,

  604. as my

  605. father

  606. assigned to

  607. me,

  608. a kingdom

  609. that you

  610. may eat

  611. and drink

  612. at my

  613. table

  614. in my

  615. kingdom

  616. and sit

  617. on thrones

  618. judging

  619. the twelve

  620. tribes of

  621. Israel.

  622. So is

  623. there any

  624. reward for

  625. staying with

  626. Jesus in

  627. his trials?

  628. the answer

  629. is yes.

  630. And Jesus'

  631. promised reward

  632. is extravagant.

  633. Jesus bequeaths

  634. the kingdom

  635. that God the

  636. father himself

  637. gave to him

  638. to these

  639. twelve

  640. apostles.

  641. And notice the

  642. contrast between

  643. verses 29 to

  644. 30 and

  645. verses 25 to

  646. 27.

  647. Now,

  648. in this

  649. present life,

  650. now,

  651. they are not

  652. to behave like

  653. the kings of the

  654. Gentiles who

  655. exercise lordship.

  656. but Christ

  657. promises them

  658. a kingdom

  659. in the

  660. age to

  661. come

  662. where they

  663. will sit

  664. on thrones

  665. judging the

  666. twelve tribes

  667. of Israel.

  668. No,

  669. now you

  670. serve.

  671. Later you

  672. will rule.

  673. Later you

  674. will get to

  675. sit on

  676. thrones to

  677. judge.

  678. Now,

  679. they are not

  680. to be like

  681. those who

  682. recline at

  683. table.

  684. But Christ

  685. promises them

  686. that a day

  687. is coming

  688. when they

  689. will eat

  690. and drink

  691. at his

  692. table

  693. in his

  694. kingdom.

  695. The point

  696. of the

  697. contrast is

  698. obvious.

  699. You

  700. sacrifice,

  701. you serve,

  702. you suffer

  703. now.

  704. You endure

  705. humiliation and

  706. injustice for the

  707. sake of Christ

  708. now.

  709. But when the

  710. kingdom of God

  711. is fulfilled,

  712. you will get

  713. to recline

  714. at the

  715. eternal

  716. heavenly banquet

  717. with Jesus,

  718. your king

  719. himself.

  720. Christ

  721. will vindicate

  722. you and

  723. he will

  724. bestow on

  725. you honor,

  726. praise,

  727. and glory.

  728. Though the

  729. promise is

  730. given specifically

  731. to the

  732. twelve apostles,

  733. minus Judas,

  734. of course,

  735. and though they

  736. do have a

  737. unique role

  738. in standing

  739. among the

  740. people of

  741. God because

  742. they're the

  743. foundation of

  744. the church,

  745. the apostles,

  746. because the

  747. twelve are

  748. leaders and

  749. representatives

  750. of the

  751. whole people

  752. of God,

  753. we the

  754. church will

  755. also share

  756. in Christ's

  757. reign.

  758. Earlier in

  759. Luke 19

    Luke 19:11–27

  760. verses 11

  761. to 27 in

  762. the parable

  763. of the

  764. minus,

  765. Jesus speaking

  766. generally,

  767. not just of

  768. the twelve

  769. apostles,

  770. but generally

  771. of all those

  772. who serve

  773. God,

  774. he said he

  775. promised reward

  776. each of them,

  777. he promised to

  778. reward them

  779. with rule

  780. over cities

  781. in the kingdom

  782. of God.

  783. This is

  784. confirmed by

  785. other passages

  786. of scripture

  787. like Ephesians

  788. 2.6 that

  789. speak of

  790. believers being

  791. seated with

  792. Christ in

  793. heavenly places.

  794. And 2 Timothy

    2 Timothy 2:12

  795. 2 verse 12

  796. which promises

  797. that if we

  798. endure,

  799. we will also

  800. reign with

  801. Christ.

  802. God will

  803. have us

  804. share in

  805. his throne

  806. and his reign.

  807. that's so

  808. magnanimous.

  809. God is the

  810. creator and

  811. we are

  812. creatures.

  813. God's the

  814. king and

  815. we are his

  816. servants,

  817. slaves.

  818. God is the

  819. potter.

  820. We are his

  821. pottery.

  822. And yet

  823. after our

  824. lifetime of

  825. haltering

  826. witness and

  827. faltering

  828. faithfulness,

  829. Christ will

  830. take us.

  831. If we

  832. endure to

  833. the end,

  834. stay with

  835. Christ to

  836. the end,

  837. he will

  838. take us

  839. and seat

  840. us on

  841. his throne

  842. to share

  843. in his

  844. reign in

  845. the kingdom

  846. of God.

  847. That should

  848. motivate us

  849. to follow in

  850. the pattern of

  851. service that

  852. Christ set for

  853. us.

  854. Christ's

  855. service.

  856. And not

  857. only Christ's

  858. service, but

  859. Christ's

  860. intercession on

  861. our behalf also

  862. enables and

  863. exemplifies Christian

  864. discipleship.

  865. That's my

  866. second point.

  867. Jesus says in

  868. verse 31,

  869. Simon,

  870. Simon,

  871. behold,

  872. Satan demanded

  873. to have you

  874. that he might

  875. sift you like

  876. wheat,

  877. calling someone's

  878. name twice like

  879. this in this

  880. culture conveys

  881. particular earnestness

  882. and affection.

  883. That's what he

  884. said earlier when

  885. he said,

  886. Martha,

  887. Martha.

  888. That's what he

  889. said when he

  890. said,

  891. Jerusalem,

  892. Jerusalem.

  893. So now he

  894. says,

  895. Simon,

  896. Simon.

  897. And though

  898. Jesus is

  899. addressing Peter

  900. here specifically,

  901. the pronoun

  902. you in

  903. verse 31,

  904. which occurs

  905. twice there in

  906. verse 31,

  907. is in both

  908. instances plural.

  909. So it's

  910. actually you

  911. all referring

  912. to all the

  913. apostles.

  914. Satan has

  915. demanded to

  916. have all of

  917. the apostles.

  918. He has

  919. demanded to

  920. sift all

  921. these apostles

  922. like wheat.

  923. In the same

  924. way, he

  925. demanded to

  926. have Job in

  927. Job chapter

    Job 1:6–12

  928. 1,

  929. verses 6 to

  930. 12,

  931. in order to

  932. afflict him

  933. and to

  934. tempt him to

  935. renounce his

  936. allegiance to

  937. God.

  938. Satan is

  939. trying to

  940. do the

  941. same with

  942. these 12

  943. apostles.

  944. He's asked

  945. of them.

  946. He wants

  947. to sift

  948. them.

  949. But he

  950. has a

  951. particular

  952. design for

  953. Peter because

  954. Peter is the

  955. first among

  956. equals.

  957. He's the

  958. leader among

  959. the 12

  960. apostles.

  961. He's the

  962. spokesperson.

  963. And sifting

  964. is a very

  965. vivid image.

  966. When farmers

  967. harvest wheat,

  968. there's a

  969. lot of

  970. debris that

  971. come with

  972. the wheat,

  973. the kernels.

  974. So in

  975. order to

  976. isolate the

  977. grains, they

  978. use a

  979. sieve, move

  980. it back and

  981. forth to

  982. separate the

  983. wheat from

  984. the debris.

  985. The wheat

  986. falls through

  987. the small

  988. holes to the

  989. ground.

  990. The larger

  991. debris, they

  992. get caught

  993. and get

  994. picked off.

  995. That's what

  996. Satan is

  997. trying to

  998. do.

  999. With Peter

  1000. and the

  1001. apostles, he

  1002. wants to

  1003. expose them

  1004. as a

  1005. fraud, as

  1006. debris, to

  1007. pick them

  1008. off and

  1009. discard them.

  1010. But this

  1011. is what

  1012. Satan does,

  1013. not just

  1014. with the

  1015. 12 apostles.

  1016. This is what

  1017. he seeks to

  1018. do with

  1019. every believer

  1020. as well.

  1021. 1 Peter

    1 Peter 5:8

  1022. chapter 5

  1023. verse 8

  1024. warns us

  1025. your

  1026. adversary,

  1027. the devil,

  1028. prowls

  1029. around like

  1030. a roaring

  1031. lion,

  1032. seeking

  1033. someone to

  1034. devour.

  1035. When we

  1036. believed in

  1037. Jesus Christ

  1038. and confessed

  1039. him as our

  1040. Lord and

  1041. Savior, we

  1042. were transferred

  1043. from the

  1044. dominion of

  1045. evil to

  1046. the dominion

  1047. of light,

  1048. the dominion

  1049. of Christ,

  1050. the kingdom

  1051. of God.

  1052. And precisely

  1053. because we're

  1054. no longer

  1055. Satan's

  1056. slaves,

  1057. we are

  1058. by definition

  1059. his enemies.

  1060. We have

  1061. targets on

  1062. our backs.

  1063. It should

  1064. come as no

  1065. surprise to

  1066. us that

  1067. there's

  1068. spiritual

  1069. warfare

  1070. around us.

  1071. But Satan

  1072. is not

  1073. the only

  1074. actor in

  1075. this story.

  1076. Look at

  1077. what Jesus

  1078. says in

  1079. verse 32.

  1080. But I

  1081. have prayed

  1082. for you

  1083. that your

  1084. faith may

  1085. not fail.

  1086. And when you

  1087. have turned

  1088. again,

  1089. strengthen

  1090. your

  1091. brothers.

  1092. This is a

  1093. remarkable

  1094. thing that

  1095. Jesus says

  1096. here.

  1097. Think about

  1098. it for a

  1099. moment.

  1100. Satan is

  1101. sifting you

  1102. with menace.

  1103. He seeks

  1104. to destroy

  1105. you.

  1106. He is a

  1107. roaring lion

  1108. prowling about

  1109. seeking to

  1110. devour you.

  1111. But don't

  1112. you worry.

  1113. I pray for

  1114. you.

  1115. if that

  1116. sounds ridiculous

  1117. to us,

  1118. it's because

  1119. we have so

  1120. little faith

  1121. in the

  1122. power of

  1123. prayer.

  1124. Nowadays,

  1125. I read a

  1126. lot of

  1127. people on

  1128. social media

  1129. say things

  1130. like,

  1131. sending

  1132. good vibes

  1133. your way.

  1134. You know,

  1135. I appreciate

  1136. the thought,

  1137. I really

  1138. do.

  1139. But frankly,

  1140. you sending

  1141. me good vibes

  1142. doesn't do

  1143. me any

  1144. good.

  1145. What in

  1146. the world

  1147. is vibes

  1148. anyway,

  1149. right?

  1150. But I

  1151. think

  1152. Christians

  1153. often think

  1154. of prayer

  1155. in the

  1156. same way.

  1157. We think

  1158. prayer is

  1159. like a

  1160. Christian

  1161. equivalent

  1162. of sending

  1163. good vibes

  1164. or keeping

  1165. our fingers

  1166. crossed.

  1167. But that

  1168. is a

  1169. gross

  1170. devaluation

  1171. of prayer.

  1172. When we

  1173. ask each

  1174. other,

  1175. please pray

  1176. for me,

  1177. when we

  1178. tell each

  1179. other,

  1180. I will

  1181. pray for

  1182. you,

  1183. these are

  1184. not mere

  1185. pleasantries.

  1186. When you

  1187. say,

  1188. I will

  1189. pray for

  1190. you,

  1191. you're

  1192. saying,

  1193. you're not

  1194. saying,

  1195. oh,

  1196. let's just

  1197. hope for

  1198. the best.

  1199. You're

  1200. saying,

  1201. I will

  1202. go to

  1203. battle

  1204. for you.

  1205. You're

  1206. saying,

  1207. I will

  1208. go run

  1209. this

  1210. difficult

  1211. errand

  1212. for you.

  1213. I will

  1214. go to

  1215. the king

  1216. himself

  1217. and speak

  1218. for you.

  1219. That's

  1220. what prayer

  1221. is.

  1222. Think of

  1223. it this

  1224. way,

  1225. when you're

  1226. talking to

  1227. a customer

  1228. service agent,

  1229. but he or

  1230. she doesn't

  1231. seem to

  1232. understand the

  1233. gravity of the

  1234. situation,

  1235. or they don't

  1236. have enough

  1237. authorization to

  1238. actually help

  1239. you,

  1240. what do you

  1241. do?

  1242. You say,

  1243. hey,

  1244. can I

  1245. please talk

  1246. to your

  1247. manager?

  1248. manager,

  1249. you're

  1250. escalating

  1251. the case.

  1252. So you

  1253. can talk

  1254. to someone

  1255. that actually

  1256. has a

  1257. power to

  1258. do something

  1259. to help

  1260. you.

  1261. Similarly,

  1262. when we

  1263. pray,

  1264. we're

  1265. saying,

  1266. I'm

  1267. done

  1268. trying to

  1269. sort out

  1270. my

  1271. problems

  1272. and my

  1273. friends

  1274. and my

  1275. families,

  1276. my

  1277. church's

  1278. concerns

  1279. with mere

  1280. mortals.

  1281. I'm

  1282. escalating

  1283. the case,

  1284. I'm

  1285. going to

  1286. take it

  1287. to the

  1288. throne

  1289. of heaven,

  1290. to God

  1291. himself.

  1292. That's

  1293. what prayer

  1294. is.

  1295. What Jesus

  1296. says to

  1297. Peter only

  1298. makes sense

  1299. when we

  1300. understand

  1301. that

  1302. properly.

  1303. Simon,

  1304. Simon,

  1305. behold,

  1306. Satan

  1307. demanded

  1308. to have

  1309. you,

  1310. that he

  1311. might

  1312. sift you

  1313. like

  1314. wheat,

  1315. but I

  1316. have

  1317. prayed

  1318. for you

  1319. that your

  1320. faith may

  1321. not fail.

  1322. And Jesus

  1323. prays for

  1324. us as

  1325. well.

  1326. Hebrews

  1327. 7,

  1328. 23 to

  1329. 25,

  1330. they say

  1331. the former

  1332. priests

  1333. were many

  1334. in number

  1335. because they

  1336. were prevented

  1337. by death

  1338. from continuing

  1339. in office.

  1340. But Christ

  1341. holds his

  1342. priesthood

  1343. permanently

  1344. because he

  1345. continues

  1346. forever.

  1347. Consequently,

  1348. he's able to

  1349. save to the

  1350. uttermost

  1351. those who

  1352. draw near

  1353. to God

  1354. through him

  1355. since he

  1356. always lives

  1357. to make

  1358. intercession

  1359. for them.

  1360. Jesus

  1361. lives

  1362. forever

  1363. at the

  1364. right hand

  1365. of God

  1366. the Father

  1367. and he

  1368. is

  1369. presently

  1370. making

  1371. intercession

  1372. for you.

  1373. When you

  1374. fear that

  1375. your faith

  1376. will fail,

  1377. when you

  1378. fear that

  1379. the tempter,

  1380. the devil

  1381. would prevail

  1382. in your life,

  1383. remember that

  1384. Jesus is

  1385. praying for

  1386. you.

  1387. He has

  1388. your back

  1389. and he

  1390. is interceding

  1391. for you

  1392. at the

  1393. Father's

  1394. right hand.

  1395. He has

  1396. the year

  1397. of the

  1398. God

  1399. Almighty

  1400. and his

  1401. mighty

  1402. intercession

  1403. for you

  1404. never

  1405. fails.

  1406. The second

  1407. and third

  1408. stanza

  1409. of the

  1410. Charles

  1411. Wesley hymn

  1412. Arise,

  1413. my soul

  1414. arise,

  1415. describe

  1416. Christ's

  1417. intercession

  1418. on our

  1419. behalf

  1420. beautifully.

  1421. He says,

  1422. he ever

  1423. lives

  1424. above

  1425. for me

  1426. to intercede,

  1427. his all

  1428. redeeming

  1429. love,

  1430. his precious

  1431. blood

  1432. to plead,

  1433. his blood

  1434. atoned

  1435. for every

  1436. race,

  1437. his blood

  1438. atoned

  1439. for every

  1440. race,

  1441. and sprinkles

  1442. now the

  1443. throne

  1444. of grace.

  1445. Five

  1446. bleeding

  1447. wounds

  1448. he bears

  1449. received

  1450. on Calvary,

  1451. they pour

  1452. effectual

  1453. prayers,

  1454. they strongly

  1455. plead for

  1456. me,

  1457. forgive him,

  1458. oh forgive,

  1459. they cry,

  1460. forgive him,

  1461. oh forgive,

  1462. they cry,

  1463. nor let

  1464. that

  1465. ransomed

  1466. sinner

  1467. die.

  1468. When you

  1469. feel burdened,

  1470. weighed down

  1471. by guilt

  1472. and condemnation,

  1473. remember that

  1474. Christ's

  1475. blood

  1476. pleads

  1477. for you,

  1478. he's at

  1479. the right

  1480. hand of the

  1481. father

  1482. interceding

  1483. for you,

  1484. saying he

  1485. belongs

  1486. to me,

  1487. she

  1488. is my

  1489. child,

  1490. they've

  1491. been clothed

  1492. with my

  1493. righteousness,

  1494. and I

  1495. will preserve

  1496. them to

  1497. the end,

  1498. that's

  1499. what Christ

  1500. is doing

  1501. for you.

  1502. And Jesus

  1503. has full

  1504. confidence

  1505. that his

  1506. prayer will

  1507. be answered,

  1508. so he

  1509. says to

  1510. Peter,

  1511. and when

  1512. you have

  1513. turned

  1514. again,

  1515. strengthen

  1516. your

  1517. brothers.

  1518. Jesus

  1519. knows that

  1520. Peter will

  1521. go astray,

  1522. but he

  1523. also knows

  1524. that he

  1525. will turn

  1526. back again,

  1527. thanks to

  1528. his prayers.

  1529. This is so

  1530. instructive for

  1531. us,

  1532. because Jesus

  1533. knows that

  1534. Peter will

  1535. be restored

  1536. among the

  1537. twelve apostles

  1538. as a leader,

  1539. and he

  1540. gives him

  1541. here a

  1542. great commission

  1543. to strengthen

  1544. his fellow

  1545. brothers,

  1546. but this

  1547. teaches us

  1548. that he

  1549. who is

  1550. given this

  1551. great commission

  1552. to strengthen

  1553. his brothers

  1554. is not

  1555. someone who

  1556. is strong,

  1557. is not

  1558. someone who

  1559. is invincible,

  1560. it's not

  1561. someone who

  1562. never falls,

  1563. but it's

  1564. someone who

  1565. falls and

  1566. then rises

  1567. again.

  1568. It's

  1569. someone who

  1570. goes astray,

  1571. but turns

  1572. back again.

  1573. It's

  1574. someone who

  1575. sins,

  1576. but

  1577. repents

  1578. again.

  1579. So don't

  1580. you ever

  1581. believe the

  1582. lie of the

  1583. enemy that

  1584. tells you that

  1585. God cannot

  1586. use you because

  1587. of your past,

  1588. that God

  1589. will not use

  1590. you because

  1591. of your

  1592. sins,

  1593. that God

  1594. will not

  1595. use you

  1596. because of

  1597. your failures.

  1598. 1 Corinthians

  1599. 1, 27-29

  1600. says,

  1601. God chose

  1602. what is

  1603. foolish in

  1604. the world

  1605. to shame

  1606. the wise.

  1607. God chose

  1608. what is

  1609. weak in

  1610. the world

  1611. to shame

  1612. the strong.

  1613. God chose

  1614. what is

  1615. low and

  1616. despised in

  1617. the world,

  1618. even things

  1619. that are

  1620. not,

  1621. to bring

  1622. to nothing

  1623. things that

  1624. are,

  1625. so that

  1626. no human

  1627. being might

  1628. boast in

  1629. the presence

  1630. of God.

  1631. God's

  1632. standard

  1633. mode of

  1634. operation.

  1635. He does

  1636. this to

  1637. humble the

  1638. pride of

  1639. man and

  1640. glorify his

  1641. own name,

  1642. so that if

  1643. you're living

  1644. in sin

  1645. today,

  1646. renounce it

  1647. before God.

  1648. Turn again

  1649. and then

  1650. strengthen your

  1651. brothers,

  1652. strengthen your

  1653. sisters.

  1654. Don't remain

  1655. self-focused,

  1656. just inwardly

  1657. turn onto

  1658. yourself,

  1659. orient yourself

  1660. instead toward

  1661. others,

  1662. move on

  1663. from your

  1664. sins,

  1665. renounce

  1666. them,

  1667. turn to

  1668. Christ,

  1669. and strengthen

  1670. your church

  1671. family.

  1672. But Peter

  1673. didn't quite

  1674. understand that

  1675. this is how

  1676. God likes to

  1677. do things,

  1678. at least not

  1679. yet.

  1680. So with all

  1681. the bravado

  1682. that he can

  1683. muster up,

  1684. he says in

  1685. verse 33,

  1686. Lord,

  1687. I am ready

  1688. to go with

  1689. you both to

  1690. prison and

  1691. to death.

  1692. But Jesus

  1693. kind of brings

  1694. him back down

  1695. to earth,

  1696. verse 34,

  1697. I tell you,

  1698. Peter,

  1699. the rooster

  1700. will not

  1701. crow this

  1702. day until

  1703. you deny

  1704. three times

  1705. that you

  1706. know me.

  1707. A rooster's

  1708. crow in the

  1709. night anticipates

  1710. the sunrise.

  1711. So Jesus

  1712. is saying

  1713. here that

  1714. before the

  1715. night is

  1716. over,

  1717. you will

  1718. deny three

  1719. times that

  1720. you even

  1721. know me.

  1722. Peter will

  1723. be in

  1724. prison for

  1725. Christ later

  1726. in Acts

  1727. 5.

  1728. Peter will

  1729. be martyred

  1730. for Christ.

  1731. hung upside

  1732. down on a

  1733. cross.

  1734. But not

  1735. before he

  1736. fails miserably

  1737. and denies

  1738. Jesus three

  1739. times.

  1740. Not before he

  1741. is humbled

  1742. and taught to

  1743. depend on

  1744. God.

  1745. Pride goes

  1746. before

  1747. destruction.

  1748. Peter thought

  1749. he could stand

  1750. with Jesus in

  1751. his own strength,

  1752. but Jesus

  1753. tells him

  1754. that he

  1755. can't.

  1756. Not once

  1757. or twice,

  1758. but three

  1759. times he

  1760. refused to

  1761. admit that

  1762. he even

  1763. knows Jesus,

  1764. let alone

  1765. admit that

  1766. he is one

  1767. of Jesus'

  1768. twelve

  1769. apostles.

  1770. This is a

  1771. sobering

  1772. warning for

  1773. all of us.

  1774. Therefore

  1775. let anyone

  1776. who thinks

  1777. that he

  1778. stands

  1779. take heed

  1780. lest he

  1781. fall.

  1782. It says

  1783. in 1

  1784. Corinthians

  1785. 10-12.

  1786. Don't ever

  1787. get secure

  1788. in your own

  1789. abilities,

  1790. in your

  1791. own willpower,

  1792. your

  1793. resolutions.

  1794. Instead

  1795. lean on

  1796. God's

  1797. strength,

  1798. his

  1799. sustaining

  1800. power.

  1801. Lean on

  1802. Christ's

  1803. intercession

  1804. on your

  1805. behalf.

  1806. Don't ever

  1807. think that

  1808. you are

  1809. immune to

  1810. certain

  1811. sins.

  1812. Oh, I

  1813. don't deal

  1814. with those

  1815. issues,

  1816. so I can

  1817. do these

  1818. things while

  1819. they can't.

  1820. We're all

  1821. capable of

  1822. failing.

  1823. I hope

  1824. you

  1825. understand

  1826. this,

  1827. because this

  1828. is going

  1829. to preserve

  1830. you for

  1831. the rest

  1832. of your

  1833. life.

  1834. If you're

  1835. looking for

  1836. a strong

  1837. pastor,

  1838. this is not

  1839. the right

  1840. church for

  1841. you.

  1842. I have

  1843. no confidence

  1844. in myself

  1845. that I can

  1846. persevere to

  1847. the end.

  1848. there's no

  1849. guarantee

  1850. that I

  1851. will never

  1852. stumble and

  1853. sin and

  1854. bring

  1855. disrepute to

  1856. Christ and

  1857. his church.

  1858. I fear

  1859. that sometimes.

  1860. I don't

  1861. know sometimes

  1862. how many

  1863. years I'll

  1864. have left

  1865. in pastoral

  1866. ministry.

  1867. I want to

  1868. make it to

  1869. the end,

  1870. but I

  1871. don't know

  1872. if I

  1873. will.

  1874. what gives

  1875. me hope

  1876. is Christ

  1877. is preserving

  1878. me.

  1879. He's

  1880. with me.

  1881. He walks

  1882. with me.

  1883. He

  1884. strengthens

  1885. me when

  1886. my hands

  1887. are weak.

  1888. You're

  1889. going to

  1890. hit times

  1891. in your

  1892. life when

  1893. you're

  1894. going to

  1895. feel the

  1896. same.

  1897. How can

  1898. I make

  1899. it as

  1900. a Christian?

  1901. How can

  1902. I keep

  1903. going?

  1904. How can

  1905. I keep

  1906. fighting

  1907. these sins?

  1908. How can

  1909. I keep

  1910. giving?

  1911. How can

  1912. I keep

  1913. loving?

  1914. Christ

  1915. will

  1916. preserve

  1917. you.

  1918. He will

  1919. hold you

  1920. fast.

  1921. And the

  1922. fact that

  1923. it's not

  1924. our own

  1925. strength of

  1926. resolve,

  1927. but Christ's

  1928. intercession

  1929. on our

  1930. behalf that

  1931. decisively

  1932. preserves

  1933. us,

  1934. should encourage

  1935. us freely

  1936. to confess

  1937. our sins

  1938. to each

  1939. other,

  1940. to admit

  1941. our weaknesses

  1942. and shortcomings

  1943. to each

  1944. other.

  1945. As

  1946. Christians,

  1947. we never

  1948. need to

  1949. hide our

  1950. weaknesses

  1951. and shortcomings

  1952. in order to

  1953. look stronger

  1954. and better

  1955. than we

  1956. actually are.

  1957. We don't

  1958. need to

  1959. do that.

  1960. The people

  1961. in the

  1962. world have

  1963. to do

  1964. that.

  1965. We don't

  1966. because we

  1967. have been

  1968. accepted by

  1969. Christ as

  1970. weak and

  1971. sinful

  1972. people.

  1973. His grace

  1974. is sufficient

  1975. for us and

  1976. His power

  1977. is made

  1978. perfect in

  1979. our weakness.

  1980. It's when

  1981. we're weak

  1982. that we

  1983. experience God's

  1984. power.

  1985. It's when

  1986. we're

  1987. humble that

  1988. we receive

  1989. God's

  1990. grace.

  1991. So if

  1992. you're

  1993. despairing

  1994. and you're

  1995. feeling

  1996. weak,

  1997. when you

  1998. feel like

  1999. you're

  2000. giving up,

  2001. acknowledge

  2002. your weakness

  2003. and shortcomings

  2004. and cling

  2005. to God.

  2006. Pray to

  2007. Him for

  2008. strength.

  2009. And finally,

  2010. not only

  2011. Christ's

  2012. service and

  2013. intercession,

  2014. but also

  2015. Christ's

  2016. suffering

  2017. enables

  2018. and

  2019. exemplifies

  2020. Christian

  2021. discipleship.

  2022. Jesus

  2023. instructs

  2024. His

  2025. disciples

  2026. this way

  2027. in

  2028. verses

  2029. 35 to

  2030. 36,

  2031. When I

  2032. sent you

  2033. out with

  2034. no money

  2035. bag or

  2036. knapsack or

  2037. sandals,

  2038. did you

  2039. lack

  2040. anything?

  2041. They said

  2042. nothing.

  2043. He said

  2044. to them,

  2045. But now

  2046. let the

  2047. one who

  2048. has a

  2049. money

  2050. bag take

  2051. it,

  2052. and likewise

  2053. a knapsack,

  2054. and let

  2055. the one

  2056. who has

  2057. no sword

  2058. sell his

  2059. cloak and

  2060. buy one.

  2061. Jesus is

  2062. alluding here

  2063. to Luke 9

  2064. when He

  2065. sent out the

  2066. twelve to

  2067. proclaim the

  2068. kingdom of

  2069. God,

  2070. and also

  2071. to Luke

  2072. 10 when He

  2073. sent out the

  2074. seventy-two

  2075. disciples to

  2076. proclaim the

  2077. kingdom of

  2078. God and

  2079. to heal

  2080. the sick.

  2081. At that

  2082. time,

  2083. Jesus

  2084. instructed His

  2085. disciples in

  2086. Luke 10

    Luke 10:4

  2087. verse 4,

  2088. carry no

  2089. money bag,

  2090. no knapsack,

  2091. no sandals,

  2092. because He

  2093. wanted them to

  2094. travel lightly,

  2095. forego extra

  2096. provisions and

  2097. the time it

  2098. takes to

  2099. prepare them,

  2100. and to depend

  2101. on the

  2102. hospitality of

  2103. the people who

  2104. receive them

  2105. and their

  2106. message.

  2107. And when

  2108. they followed

  2109. Jesus'

  2110. instructions in

  2111. that way,

  2112. they lacked

  2113. nothing.

  2114. But now,

  2115. Jesus says,

  2116. let the

  2117. one who

  2118. has the

  2119. money

  2120. bag take

  2121. it,

  2122. and likewise

  2123. a knapsack,

  2124. and let the

  2125. one who

  2126. has no

  2127. sword sell

  2128. his cloak

  2129. and buy

  2130. one.

  2131. But why

  2132. the sudden

  2133. change?

  2134. Jesus gives

  2135. His reason in

  2136. verse 37,

  2137. for I tell

  2138. you that this

  2139. scripture must be

  2140. fulfilled in

  2141. me.

  2142. And He was

  2143. numbered with

  2144. the transgressors,

  2145. for what is

  2146. written about

  2147. me has its

  2148. fulfillment.

  2149. Jesus is

  2150. quoting from

  2151. Isaiah 53,

    Isaiah 53:12

  2152. verse 12,

  2153. which we read

  2154. in our

  2155. assurance of

  2156. pardon this

  2157. morning.

  2158. It's a

  2159. prophecy that

  2160. says that

  2161. Messiah will

  2162. pour out His

  2163. soul to

  2164. death and

  2165. be numbered

  2166. with the

  2167. transgressors,

  2168. thereby bearing

  2169. the sin of

  2170. many and

  2171. making intercession

  2172. for the

  2173. transgressors.

  2174. Jesus is

  2175. saying that

  2176. this prophecy

  2177. is fulfilled

  2178. in His

  2179. impending

  2180. death on

  2181. the cross.

  2182. He will

  2183. be treated

  2184. as a

  2185. sinner,

  2186. as a

  2187. lawbreaker,

  2188. as a

  2189. rebel,

  2190. and He

  2191. will be

  2192. persecuted

  2193. and killed.

  2194. And if

  2195. you claim

  2196. to follow

  2197. as your

  2198. King and

  2199. your God

  2200. and your

  2201. Lord,

  2202. the man

  2203. that was

  2204. crucified and

  2205. killed for

  2206. treason,

  2207. you're going

  2208. to be treated

  2209. the same

  2210. way.

  2211. So they

  2212. can no

  2213. longer count

  2214. on the

  2215. hospitality and

  2216. receptivity of

  2217. the people,

  2218. but instead

  2219. must provide

  2220. for themselves.

  2221. Christ's

  2222. suffering

  2223. sets the

  2224. pattern for

  2225. our Christian

  2226. lives.

  2227. The

  2228. apostles,

  2229. however,

  2230. as they have

  2231. often done,

  2232. misunderstand

  2233. Jesus'

  2234. teaching.

  2235. They take

  2236. Jesus'

  2237. words,

  2238. let the

  2239. one who

  2240. has no

  2241. sword sell

  2242. his cloak

  2243. and buy

  2244. one,

  2245. as a

  2246. literal

  2247. call to

  2248. arms.

  2249. And they

  2250. say in

  2251. verse 38,

  2252. look,

  2253. Lord,

  2254. here are

  2255. two swords.

  2256. It's kind

  2257. of funny,

  2258. actually,

  2259. if you think

  2260. about it,

  2261. because if

  2262. they're going

  2263. to be part

  2264. of the

  2265. Messiah's

  2266. revolutionary

  2267. army,

  2268. maybe they

  2269. think that

  2270. they can

  2271. avert the

  2272. suffering and

  2273. death that

  2274. Jesus keeps

  2275. predicting for

  2276. himself by

  2277. fighting for

  2278. him.

  2279. But think

  2280. about it,

  2281. if you're

  2282. going against

  2283. all of

  2284. Jewish

  2285. leadership and

  2286. also all

  2287. the Roman

  2288. authorities,

  2289. I mean,

  2290. what are you

  2291. going to do

  2292. with two

  2293. swords?

  2294. It's

  2295. woefully

  2296. inadequate.

  2297. They've

  2298. missed the

  2299. point,

  2300. so Jesus

  2301. just says

  2302. to them,

  2303. it's

  2304. enough.

  2305. That's

  2306. not what

  2307. Jesus has

  2308. in mind.

  2309. When

  2310. Jesus

  2311. instructs

  2312. his

  2313. disciples

  2314. to buy

  2315. a sword,

  2316. that's a

  2317. metaphor for

  2318. provision

  2319. and preparedness,

  2320. not a

  2321. literal call

  2322. to arms.

  2323. This is

  2324. why later

  2325. at Jesus'

  2326. arrest in

  2327. verses 47

  2328. and 53,

  2329. when the

  2330. disciples

  2331. ask,

  2332. Lord,

  2333. shall we

  2334. strike with

  2335. a sword?

  2336. And Peter

  2337. strikes the

  2338. servant of

  2339. the high

  2340. priest and

  2341. cuts off

  2342. his right

  2343. ear,

  2344. but Jesus

  2345. does not

  2346. commend him

  2347. for that.

  2348. He says,

  2349. no more

  2350. of this,

  2351. and that he

  2352. touches the

  2353. ear of the

  2354. servant and

  2355. heals him.

  2356. This is also

  2357. why in Luke's

  2358. sequel in the

  2359. book of Acts,

  2360. the church

  2361. always responds

  2362. to persecution

  2363. with nonviolence.

  2364. Christ never

  2365. took up the

  2366. sword to

  2367. kill.

  2368. He never

  2369. forced his

  2370. subjects to

  2371. his cause.

  2372. He went to

  2373. the cross

  2374. instead,

  2375. and he died

  2376. for the sins

  2377. of his people.

  2378. So it's

  2379. Christ's

  2380. suffering,

  2381. not conquest,

  2382. that exemplifies

  2383. Christian

  2384. discipleship.

  2385. Jesus could

  2386. have called

  2387. legions of

  2388. his angels

  2389. to come to

  2390. his aid and

  2391. overthrow both

  2392. the Jewish

  2393. leadership and

  2394. the Roman

  2395. Empire,

  2396. but instead

  2397. Jesus let

  2398. himself be

  2399. delivered over

  2400. into the

  2401. hands of

  2402. wicked men.

  2403. usually in

  2404. warfare,

  2405. countless

  2406. soldiers are

  2407. sacrificed to

  2408. protect the

  2409. commander-in-chief,

  2410. but in this

  2411. epic spiritual

  2412. warfare, the

  2413. king himself

  2414. died to

  2415. spare his

  2416. subjects.

  2417. It's only

  2418. when we know

  2419. and believe

  2420. Jesus in

  2421. his suffering

  2422. that we can

  2423. suffer in his

  2424. life.

  2425. It's because

  2426. Christ has

  2427. served us,

  2428. because Christ

  2429. has interceded

  2430. for us,

  2431. because Christ

  2432. has suffered

  2433. for us,

  2434. that we can

  2435. be Christian

  2436. disciples.

  2437. thus,

  2438. them

  2439. normale,

  2440. not

  2441. him

  2442. souvenir

  2443. company,

  2444. for us.

  2445. And

  2446. of course,

  2447. may

  2448. he

  2449. sayes,

  2450. he

  2451. need

  2452. her

  2453. self-

  2454. Ann

  2455. asc municipal,
