  1. Psalm 119 verses 121 to 128.

    Psalms 119:121–128

  2. And teach me your statutes.

  3. I am your servant.

  4. Give me understanding that I may know your testimony.

  5. It is time for the Lord to act.

  6. For your law has been broken.

  7. Therefore I love your commandments above gold, above fine gold.

  8. Therefore I consider all your precepts to be right.

  9. I hate every false way.

  10. That's the word of the Lord.

  11. When someone, when there's a powerless person that's being oppressed by people,

  12. they often appeal to those in authority and power, right?

  13. To rulers to give them justice.

  14. And that's kind of a similar situation here

  15. where the psalmist feels that he's being oppressed

  16. and is now going to God seeking justice.

  17. And so twice, in verse 121 and 122,

  18. he mentions the word oppressed.

  19. He says, I've done what is just and right.

  20. Do not lead me to my oppressors.

  21. Give your servant a pledge of good.

  22. Let not the insolent oppress me.

  23. And the word oppressed, it usually means to exploit.

  24. It's often used in context throughout the Old Testament

  25. to refer to exploiting someone that, for example, the poor,

  26. who is unable to repay a debt, for example, and exploiting them.

  27. So it's used in that context, in that kind of light,

  28. in Leviticus 19.13, Deuteronomy 24.14, 1 Samuel 12.3.

  29. And so that seems to be, so he's using that as a metaphor

  30. to talk about how he's being wronged, treated unjustly.

  31. He's being exploited wrongly by evildoers.

  32. And now he continues that kind of imagery when he says,

  33. he prays to God in verse 122,

  34. give your servant a pledge of good.

  35. So the expression to give a pledge of good

  36. literally means to stand surety for someone.

  37. So to basically, in modern terms,

  38. be a cosigner of a debt,

  39. to take responsibility for payment

  40. for someone that can't repay a debt, right?

  41. So he's continuing that same imagery.

  42. He's saying, the evildoers are oppressing me,

  43. they're exploiting me.

  44. And so give your servant a pledge of good.

  45. Be, stand surety for me.

  46. Take responsibility for me, for my debt,

  47. and pay for me.

  48. And basically, he's asking for justice.

  49. And the reason why the psalmist can cry out to God

  50. this boldly is because he says in verse 121,

  51. I have done what is just and right.

  52. He believes that he has lived with integrity.

  53. He has lived to please God.

  54. He has done what is just and right.

  55. And because it is just and right,

  56. he says in verse 123,

  57. my eyes long for your salvation

  58. and for the fulfillment of your righteous promise.

  59. So the word right in verse 121

  60. and the word righteous in verse 123

  61. are different forms of the exact same Hebrew word.

  62. And so there's a connection there.

  63. Because the psalmist has done what is right,

  64. it's right of God to fulfill his promise

  65. and to deliver him

  66. because the psalmist has done according to God's commands.

  67. And so he says,

  68. and not just,

  69. and he has done what is right

  70. as God's servant.

  71. That word is repeated three times in this passage.

  72. Verse 122,

  73. give your servant the pleasure of good.

  74. Verse 124,

  75. deal with your servant

  76. according to your steadfast love

  77. and teach me your statutes.

  78. And then 125,

  79. I am your servant.

  80. Give me understanding

  81. that I may know your testimony.

  82. So he's saying,

  83. I belong to you, Lord.

  84. I am yours.

  85. You owe me.

  86. You are responsible for me.

  87. So I'm being exploited in this situation.

  88. Please,

  89. as I am your servant,

  90. I belong to you.

  91. So be my surety.

  92. Stand surety for me

  93. and deliver me.

  94. And as he's doing that,

  95. as he's praying that,

  96. he's not just consumed

  97. with just being delivered from his own,

  98. the oppression that he's facing.

  99. Even though he says

  100. he has done what is just and right,

  101. he's lived according to God's commands,

  102. he's not complacent.

  103. He doesn't stop there.

  104. He says,

  105. and he asks,

  106. praise God to give him

  107. further understanding

  108. to teach him more and more of his words

  109. so that he can live even more

  110. in accordance with God's will.

  111. So that's what he prays

  112. in 124 and 125.

  113. Teach me your statues.

  114. I am your servant.

  115. Give me understanding

  116. that I may know your testimonies.

  117. I think this kind of highlights

  118. the fact that the more we learn

  119. and learn God's word,

  120. the more we dive deeply into God's word,

  121. the more we learn

  122. that it really is unfathomable.

  123. No one can plumb its death, right?

  124. And likewise,

  125. the more we obey God,

  126. the more we become like God,

  127. the more we realize

  128. how lacking we are,

  129. how unholy we are,

  130. how selfish we are,

  131. how sinful we are, right?

  132. So it's kind of a paradox.

  133. There's a Puritan prayer

  134. that we've used in the past

  135. as a confession of sin

  136. in our church.

  137. It's entitled Paradox.

  138. And it goes this way.

  139. It says,

  140. O changeless God,

  141. under the conviction of your spirit,

  142. we learn that the more we do,

  143. the worse we are.

  144. The more we know you,

  145. the less we know.

  146. The more holiness we have,

  147. the more sinful we are.

  148. The more we love,

  149. the more there is to love.

  150. And the psalmist,

  151. as someone who does

  152. what is just and right,

  153. knows that there's more

  154. to be learned.

  155. Teach me your statutes.

  156. Give me understanding

  157. that I may know

  158. your testimonies.

  159. And when God comes

  160. to his deliverance,

  161. it won't just be

  162. giving him

  163. what is due to him,

  164. giving him his right,

  165. but it will also be

  166. in the punishing

  167. of evildoers, right?

  168. So that's why

  169. verse 126 says,

  170. It is time for the Lord

  171. to act,

  172. for your law

  173. has been broken.

  174. And God's going

  175. to punish evildoers

  176. and reward the righteous.

  177. And therefore,

  178. he concludes

  179. in verses 127 and 128

  180. with two therefore sentences.

  181. Therefore,

  182. I love your commandments

  183. and above gold,

  184. above fine gold.

  185. That's an often used

  186. imagery, right?

  187. I mean,

  188. I think even just

  189. in the psalms

  190. that we've been going through

  191. on Wednesday,

  192. we've seen that

  193. multiple times, right?

  194. That God's word

  195. is more precious

  196. than gold,

  197. even fine gold, right?

  198. And often it's described

  199. as sweeter than honey,

  200. than honey from the honeycomb,

  201. right?

  202. And if you think about it,

  203. that's a really profound

  204. thing to say

  205. because how many people

  206. in our world,

  207. in our society,

  208. I mean,

  209. sacrifice their integrity,

  210. sacrifice their friends,

  211. sacrifice their family,

  212. sacrifice their own health

  213. to get wealthy, right?

  214. they value wealth.

  215. So many people live

  216. for monies,

  217. live for fine gold.

  218. But the psalmist is saying,

  219. no,

  220. I love your commandments

  221. above gold,

  222. above fine gold.

  223. That's a really high praise.

  224. It's saying,

  225. I value this.

  226. I cherish God's word.

  227. I want to live

  228. in accordance with it.

  229. And not only that,

  230. he says,

  231. therefore,

  232. verse 120,

  233. I consider all your precepts

  234. to be right.

  235. I hate every false way.

  236. He considers all of God's precepts

  237. to be right.

  238. He doesn't presume

  239. to put himself above God's word,

  240. to judge it,

  241. to determine right for himself,

  242. to say,

  243. whatever I deem right,

  244. whatever seems right to me

  245. is right.

  246. He says,

  247. no,

  248. I consider all your precepts

  249. to be right.

  250. He seeks to live

  251. in accordance with God's word.

  252. He says,

  253. I hate every false way.

  254. Notice the contrast

  255. between 27 and 128.

  256. He says,

  257. I love your commandments.

  258. And then he says,

  259. I hate every false way.

  260. That love-hate dichotomy,

  261. you really can't have one

  262. without the other.

  263. You can't say,

  264. I love God's commandments

  265. and then say,

  266. well,

  267. I condone

  268. false evil ways.

  269. To condone

  270. false evil ways

  271. is to spurn righteousness,

  272. is to spurn

  273. God's commandments.

  274. You can't have one

  275. without the other.

  276. To love God's commandments,

  277. you need to hate

  278. evil doing.

  279. You have to hate sin.

  280. And the only way

  281. to hate sin

  282. is to love God's commandments

  283. and to do it.

  284. So that's what,

  285. that's the dichotomy

  286. that you see there.

  287. And,

  288. and,

  289. having gone through

  290. the entire stanza,

  291. we're left with the,

  292. with the realization

  293. that,

  294. though relatively speaking,

  295. maybe in some ways

  296. we have lived justly

  297. and righteously

  298. as the psalmist claims

  299. to have in truth

  300. according to,

  301. in light of God's

  302. ultimate perfect standards,

  303. all of us

  304. have broken God's law,

  305. right?

  306. And it says in verse 126,

  307. it is time

  308. for the Lord to act

  309. for your law

  310. has been broken.

  311. That should leave us

  312. trembling in fear

  313. because we have

  314. broken God's law.

  315. And it is time

  316. for the Lord God

  317. to act,

  318. to bring justice,

  319. to punish evil doers.

  320. That's our plight.

  321. And,

  322. and,

  323. and that's where

  324. this psalm really points

  325. to its fulfillment

  326. in Jesus.

  327. It says over and over again,

  328. describes a servant

  329. who does right,

  330. servant who is just,

  331. servant of God

  332. who,

  333. who has done

  334. what is right.

  335. And,

  336. and that really points

  337. to the servant

  338. of the Lord

  339. that Isaiah prophesies

  340. about over and over again.

  341. The servant of the Lord

  342. will come to do right,

  343. to bring justice,

  344. as it says in Isaiah 42,

  345. 2,

  346. 1,

  347. Behold my servant

  348. whom I uphold,

  349. my chosen in whom

  350. my soul delights.

  351. I put my spirit upon him.

  352. He will bring forth

  353. justice to the nations.

  354. Then Jesus is described

  355. over and over again

  356. throughout the New Testament

  357. as a fulfillment

  358. of this servant of the Lord

  359. that Isaiah prophesies about.

  360. And,

  361. of course,

  362. the classic passage

  363. that we're all familiar with,

  364. Isaiah 53,

    Isaiah 53:4–11

  365. verses 4 to 11,

  366. it says this about

  367. the servant of the Lord.

  368. Surely he has borne our griefs

  369. and carried our sorrows,

  370. yet we esteemed him

  371. stricken,

  372. smitten by God,

  373. and afflicted.

  374. But he was pierced

  375. for our transgressions.

  376. He was crushed

  377. for our iniquities.

  378. Upon him was the chastisement

  379. that brought us peace,

  380. and with his wounds

  381. we are healed.

  382. All we like sheep

  383. have gone astray.

  384. We have turned everyone

  385. to his own way,

  386. and the Lord has laid on him

  387. the iniquity of us all.

  388. He was oppressed,

  389. just like the psalmist

  390. is saying here.

  391. He was oppressed,

  392. he was afflicted,

  393. yet he opened not his mouth.

  394. Like a lamb that is led

  395. to the slaughter,

  396. and like a sheep

  397. that before it shears

  398. is silent,

  399. so he opened not his mouth.

  400. By oppression and judgment

  401. he was taken away.

  402. Out of the anguish

  403. of his soul

  404. he shall see

  405. and be satisfied.

  406. By his knowledge

  407. shall the righteous one,

  408. my servant,

  409. make many to be

  410. accounted righteous,

  411. and he shall bear

  412. their iniquities.

  413. So Jesus really fulfills

  414. this servant,

  415. this servant that's here

  416. in our stanza,

  417. Psalm 119, 121-128.

  418. He was oppressed,

  419. like the psalmist,

  420. but he was oppressed

  421. and he did not get justice

  422. because he should have been,

  423. he should have triumphed,

  424. he should have been,

  425. he should have experienced victory

  426. and triumph and glory

  427. while during his time on earth,

  428. but instead he was oppressed,

  429. instead he was killed

  430. on the cross

  431. because he was standing in

  432. for us

  433. who deserved,

  434. who had broken God's laws,

  435. but he was standing in for us.

  436. He died in our place,

  437. crucified for our sins

  438. so that his righteousness

  439. can be imputed to us

  440. and the privileges

  441. that he alone deserves

  442. can be enjoyed by us.

  443. And so it's because

  444. of what Jesus has done

  445. in fulfilling this psalm

  446. that we now can really apply

  447. this psalm

  448. to our own lives.

  449. And cry out to God

  450. and pray to God

  451. in the same way

  452. as the psalmist does here.

  453. Thank you.

  454. Thank you.
