  1. 1 Timothy 1, verses 12-17.

    1 Timothy 1:12–17

  2. I thank Him who has given me strength, Christ Jesus our Lord,

  3. because He judged me faithful, appointing me to His service.

  4. Though formerly I was a blasphemer, persecutor, and insolent opponent,

  5. but I received mercy because I had acted ignorantly in unbelief,

  6. and the grace of our Lord overflowed for me with the faith and love that are in Christ Jesus.

  7. The saying is trustworthy and deserving of full acceptance

  8. that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners of whom I am the foremost.

  9. But I received mercy for this reason, that in me as the foremost,

  10. Jesus Christ might display His perfect patience as an example to those who were to believe in Him for eternal life.

  11. To the King of the ages, immortal, invisible, the only God,

  12. be honor and glory forever and ever.

  13. Amen.

  14. This is God's holy and authoritative word.

  15. Christmas time in our country is, as you know, is full of gifts and good feelings.

  16. People watch classic films like It's a Wonderful Life, which I like as well,

  17. A Christmas Carol, that highlight kindness and generosity toward people,

  18. and they spend nearly $700 billion for themselves and others during November and December.

  19. That's just in the U.S.

  20. It's the two most profitable months of the year for retail businesses.

  21. And churches, likewise, are very busy during the season,

  22. putting on outreach events to reach their neighbors and friends,

  23. Christmas plays, candlelight services, drive-through nativities,

  24. and even live, I found out recently, live Christmas camels as attractions outside the church building.

  25. Apparently that's the thing.

  26. But beneath all the sentimentality and pageantry of Christmas,

  27. the true message of Christmas can easily be lost.

  28. And in our passage today, we get an unornamented look at the meaning of Christmas.

  29. And the heart of it is chapter 1, verse 15.

    Isaiah 1:15

  30. The saying is trustworthy and deserving of full acceptance

  31. that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners, of whom I am the foremost.

  32. That's what Christmas is all about.

  33. And that means we as people, we should entrust ourselves to Christ Jesus,

  34. who saves sinners by His mercy.

  35. That's the main point of this passage.

  36. And I'll first talk about it, talk about the recipient of mercy,

  37. and then the reason for mercy, and then the response to mercy throughout this passage.

  38. Paul begins this passage with thanksgiving in verse 12.

  39. I thank Him who has given me strength, Christ Jesus our Lord,

  40. because He judged me faithful, appointing me to His service.

  41. This verse is often misunderstood.

  42. Paul is thanking Jesus for appointing Him to His service,

  43. which is a continuation of the thought in verse 11,

  44. if you just look back one verse prior to this,

  45. where Paul spoke of how he has been entrusted with the gospel of the glory of the blessed God.

  46. So he's thanking Jesus for appointing Him to be the minister of the gospel.

  47. But the reason for this appointment is often misunderstood from this verse.

  48. Some people understand the clause,

  49. because He judged me faithful,

  50. to mean that Jesus entrusted the gospel to Paul,

  51. because Paul was already faithful to God.

  52. Or they think that it's because God foreknew that Paul would be faithful.

  53. God saw how hardworking Paul was,

  54. how upright he was,

  55. and how dependable he was.

  56. And having judged him faithful,

  57. He entrusted the precious gospel of Jesus Christ,

  58. the gospel, the goodness of salvation to Him.

  59. That's how people often understand it.

  60. But that's not what this clause means.

  61. If that's what is meant,

  62. it would contradict the rest of this passage,

  63. where Paul's talking about how he was not worthy of the service to which he was appointed.

  64. And he highlights in the whole passage how undeserving he was of the mercy that he received from God.

  65. So what then does verse 12 mean?

  66. The word faithful in verse 12

  67. is an adjectival form of the same Greek verb that was translated in verse 11 as entrusted.

  68. So it can be translated as trustworthy.

  69. That's in fact how this word is,

  70. this exact same word is translated in verse 15.

  71. The saying is trustworthy.

  72. And I think that's the way it should be translated here in verse 12 also.

  73. The New International Version,

  74. if you have the New International Version Bible,

  75. the NIV,

  76. it nails the translation of this verse.

  77. It says,

  78. I thank Christ Jesus our Lord,

  79. who has given me strength,

  80. that He considered me trustworthy,

  81. appointing me to His service.

  82. So I hope you're following the meaning.

  83. Paul's filled with wonderment and thanksgiving toward God,

  84. that he considered Him to be trustworthy.

  85. And God expressed His trust in Him

  86. by appointing Him to His service.

  87. So Paul's not saying that God appointed him or chose him

  88. because he was trustworthy.

  89. He's marveling and thanking God

  90. that He considered him trustworthy.

  91. You guys see the difference?

  92. I hope you're following.

  93. It's,

  94. he's saying,

  95. it's wonder that God considered me trustworthy.

  96. And I thank Him for that.

  97. And that's,

  98. this is all the more remarkable

  99. considering the rest of verse 13.

  100. Though formerly I was a blasphemer,

  101. persecutor,

  102. an insolent opponent.

  103. Paul's full of thanksgiving

  104. because he is amazed

  105. that God regarded him as trustworthy

  106. of this entrustment of the gospel

  107. even after all the blasphemy against Christ

  108. that he spewed,

  109. all the persecution of Christians,

  110. God's people,

  111. and his insolent opposition to God.

  112. These three words are very strong words

  113. of self-indictment

  114. and it becomes progressively worse.

  115. First,

  116. blasphemer,

  117. he says.

  118. A few verses later in chapter 1,

  119. verse 20,

  120. Paul mentions two men

  121. whom he had excommunicated

  122. from the church fellowship

  123. because they were blaspheming.

  124. Same letter in chapter 6,

  125. Paul specifically says

  126. that Christians should behave

  127. in such a way

  128. so that the name of God

  129. and the teaching

  130. may not be reviled.

  131. That's the exact same word

  132. or be blasphemed.

  133. He also warns of false teachers

  134. who have an unhealthy craving

  135. for controversy

  136. and for quarrels about words

  137. which produce envy,

  138. dissension,

  139. slander,

  140. again,

  141. different translation,

  142. the same word,

  143. blasphemy,

  144. evil suspicions

  145. in chapter 6,

  146. verse 4.

  147. So all that to say

  148. that blasphemy

  149. is something that Paul

  150. is very concerned about

  151. throughout his letter to Timothy.

  152. Yet he describes himself

  153. as a blasphemer.

  154. He had spoken abusively

  155. and falsely

  156. about Christ and his church.

  157. Not only a blasphemer

  158. against God,

  159. but Paul was also

  160. a persecutor of God's people.

  161. Describing his life

  162. before conversion

  163. in Acts 26,

    Acts 26:10–11

  164. verses 10 to 11,

  165. Paul confesses this,

  166. I not only locked up

  167. many of the saints

  168. in prison

  169. after receiving authority

  170. from the chief priests,

  171. but when they were put to death,

  172. I cast my vote against them.

  173. And I punished them often

  174. in all the synagogues

  175. and tried to make them blaspheme.

  176. And in raging fury

  177. against them,

  178. I persecuted them

  179. even to foreign cities.

  180. Paul jailed Christians

  181. and he authorized

  182. their execution.

  183. He rabidly pursued Christians

  184. even outside

  185. of the Jewish jurisdiction,

  186. even to foreign cities.

  187. And not only was Paul

  188. a blasphemer of God

  189. and a persecutor of the church,

  190. he was, in general,

  191. an insolent opponent.

  192. This is the strongest term

  193. of the three.

  194. It can be translated

  195. alternatively as tyrant.

  196. It refers to people

  197. who violently

  198. and presumptuously

  199. transgress

  200. other people's rights,

  201. trespass

  202. other people's fears

  203. to inflict injury

  204. and insult.

  205. Paul was an insolent opponent

  206. of both Christ

  207. and the church.

  208. He pridefully transgressed

  209. against both God

  210. and people,

  211. presuming to know

  212. better than God,

  213. and violating the rights

  214. of Christians.

  215. That was Paul.

  216. The man that God

  217. singled out

  218. to be an apostle,

  219. to be a minister

  220. of the gospel,

  221. was not formerly

  222. a worshiper of Christ,

  223. supporter of the church,

  224. and a humble servant

  225. of God.

  226. No, he was instead

  227. a blasphemer,

  228. persecutor,

  229. and an insolent opponent.

  230. And this is why

  231. Paul calls his salvation

  232. and appointment

  233. to ministry

  234. a mercy.

  235. He continues

  236. in verse 13,

  237. But I received mercy

  238. because I had acted

  239. ignorantly in unbelief,

  240. and the grace

  241. of our Lord

  242. overflowed for me

  243. with the faith

  244. and love

  245. that are in Christ Jesus.

  246. He repeats

  247. that phrase

  248. again in verse 16,

  249. But I received

  250. mercy.

  251. And note the strong

  252. contrast indicated

  253. by that conjunction,

  254. But.

  255. Formerly,

  256. I was a blasphemer

  257. and persecutor

  258. and insolent opponent,

  259. but I received

  260. mercy.

  261. I am the foremost

  262. of sinners,

  263. but I received

  264. mercy.

  265. Even though I consider

  266. myself to be

  267. the very worst

  268. of sinners,

  269. I received mercy.

  270. That's what Paul

  271. is talking about here.

  272. The very nature

  273. of mercy

  274. is that it's undeserved.

  275. Those who believe

  276. that they are in the right

  277. don't ask for mercy.

  278. They ask for justice.

  279. People who believe

  280. that they are deserving

  281. or entitled

  282. to something,

  283. they don't ask

  284. for mercy.

  285. They ask for payment.

  286. They ask for their wage,

  287. their reward.

  288. People who cry

  289. for mercy

  290. are the people

  291. who recognize

  292. that they are undeserving,

  293. but because of

  294. their desperate need,

  295. they plead for it

  296. anyway.

  297. And Paul

  298. understands

  299. his calling

  300. to Christ,

  301. his salvation

  302. and his ministry

  303. as God's act

  304. of mercy.

  305. He's a recipient

  306. of mercy.

  307. As 4th century

  308. pastor and theologian

  309. Augustine writes,

  310. none he chooses

  311. is worthy,

  312. but choosing

  313. he makes them

  314. worthy.

  315. That God

  316. not only

  317. would save him,

  318. but also

  319. entrust him

  320. the gospel

  321. to Paul,

  322. that was

  323. an undeniable

  324. evidence

  325. of God's

  326. forgiveness

  327. and grace.

  328. 19th century

  329. British pastor

  330. Charles Sargent

  331. expressed

  332. a similar sentiment

  333. this way.

  334. I've always

  335. felt in my own

  336. mind

  337. that it was

  338. one of the

  339. clearest proofs

  340. that I had

  341. God's forgiveness

  342. of my many sins

  343. when I was

  344. trusted to

  345. preach the gospel.

  346. I should think

  347. that if a

  348. prodigal came

  349. back to his

  350. father,

  351. the old gentleman

  352. would kiss him

  353. and receive him

  354. and rejoice

  355. greatly over him,

  356. but the next

  357. Saturday,

  358. the market day,

  359. the old gentleman

  360. would say,

  361. I cannot send

  362. young William

  363. to market

  364. that would be

  365. putting temptation

  366. in his way.

  367. Here,

  368. John,

  369. you have always

  370. been with me.

  371. Go to market

  372. and buy and sell

  373. for me,

  374. for all that I

  375. have is thine.

  376. William,

  377. you stay at home

  378. with me.

  379. He might not

  380. let him see

  381. all that he meant,

  382. but he would say

  383. to himself,

  384. dear boy,

  385. he's hardly fit

  386. for that great trust.

  387. I love him,

  388. but still,

  389. I hardly dare

  390. trust him

  391. as much as that.

  392. But see

  393. what my Lord

  394. did with me.

  395. When I came

  396. home to him

  397. as a poor

  398. prodigal,

  399. he said,

  400. here is my gospel.

  401. I will entrust

  402. you with it.

  403. Go and preach it.

  404. I bless his name

  405. that I have not

  406. preached anything else

  407. and I do not

  408. mean to begin

  409. to do so.

  410. That God

  411. would consider me

  412. trustworthy

  413. of stewarding

  414. the gospel

  415. of Jesus Christ,

  416. this precious,

  417. one-of-a-kind

  418. message of salvation

  419. for the world.

  420. After all that

  421. I had done

  422. against him,

  423. after all sins

  424. I had committed,

  425. what grace,

  426. what mercy.

  427. That's Paul's

  428. sentiment.

  429. Though Paul

  430. was undeserving,

  431. God saved him

  432. and gave him

  433. strength to be

  434. an apostle

  435. of Jesus Christ

  436. to discharge

  437. his sacred duty

  438. of ministering

  439. the gospel.

  440. And that's why

  441. Paul thanks God

  442. for strengthening

  443. him in verse 12.

  444. It's God's

  445. strengthening that

  446. enables Paul

  447. for the service

  448. that he is called

  449. to.

  450. And Paul is here

  451. speaking of his

  452. Damascus encounter

  453. with the spirit

  454. of Jesus

  455. on his road

  456. to Damascus.

  457. Because for Paul,

  458. his conversion

  459. to Christianity

  460. and his call

  461. to ministry,

  462. his commission

  463. to Christian ministry

  464. happened simultaneously.

  465. And Paul speaks

  466. of this reality

  467. again in verse 14.

  468. When he encountered

  469. Jesus,

  470. he says,

  471. the grace of our

  472. Lord overflowed

  473. for me

  474. with the faith

  475. and love

  476. that are in

  477. Christ Jesus.

  478. This is the content,

  479. the substance

  480. of the mercy

  481. that he received

  482. from Christ.

  483. Remember the triad

  484. of Paul's sins?

  485. This is,

  486. he described himself

  487. as a blasphemer,

  488. persecutor,

  489. and insolent opponent.

  490. Now that triad

  491. of Paul's sins

  492. now meets

  493. the triad

  494. of God's mercy.

  495. He says,

  496. the grace

  497. and faith

  498. and love

  499. that are in

  500. Christ Jesus

  501. overflowed

  502. for him.

  503. And that word

  504. overflowed

  505. is emphasized here

  506. in the Greek.

  507. It's actually

  508. the first word.

  509. It's intentionally

  510. fronted for emphasis.

  511. And I love

  512. that word.

  513. It's an unusual,

  514. rare word

  515. that it's likely

  516. actually Paul

  517. probably coined

  518. this word.

  519. He made it up

  520. to express

  521. just how

  522. super abundant

  523. God's mercy is.

  524. It's the same

  525. kind of word

  526. that Paul uses

  527. in Romans 5

    Romans 5:20

  528. verse 20

  529. where he says,

  530. where sin

  531. increased,

  532. grace abounded

  533. all the more.

  534. The grace

  535. of our Lord

  536. Jesus Christ

  537. along with

  538. the faith

  539. and love

  540. that are in him,

  541. it didn't drip

  542. down to us.

  543. It doesn't

  544. trickle down

  545. to us.

  546. It overflowed.

  547. It spilled over.

  548. It was poured

  549. out on us

  550. lavishly,

  551. generously,

  552. and unsparingly.

  553. Whatever

  554. Paul's sins

  555. were,

  556. they were

  557. overmatched

  558. by God's

  559. mercy.

  560. Wherever

  561. Paul had

  562. multiplied

  563. blasphemies,

  564. persecutions,

  565. and insolent

  566. opposition,

  567. the grace,

  568. faith,

  569. and love

  570. that are

  571. found in

  572. Jesus Christ

  573. abounded

  574. all the more.

  575. And so

  576. Paul had

  577. formerly acted

  578. ignorantly in

  579. unbelief as he

  580. said in verse 13,

  581. but now that

  582. unbelief is

  583. counteracted by

  584. this faith that

  585. he receives from

  586. Jesus.

  587. Paul was

  588. formerly a

  589. persecutor of

  590. the church,

  591. but now through

  592. Jesus he

  593. receives love for

  594. Christ and his

  595. church.

  596. And Paul was

  597. formerly a

  598. blasphemer and

  599. an insolent

  600. opponent of

  601. God,

  602. but now through

  603. Christ Jesus he

  604. becomes a

  605. humble recipient

  606. of grace.

  607. Grace means

  608. unmerited favor,

  609. a gift from

  610. God.

  611. And if you're a

  612. Christian, this is

  613. true for you too.

  614. Notice that Paul

  615. doesn't say in

  616. verse 14,

  617. the grace of my

  618. Lord overflowed

  619. for me.

  620. He says the

  621. grace of our

  622. Lord overflowed

  623. for me, our

  624. Lord, because

  625. Paul is

  626. addressing his

  627. letter to

  628. Timothy, his

  629. disciple.

  630. And by

  631. extension, this

  632. statement applies

  633. to all who

  634. confess Jesus

  635. Christ as their

  636. Lord.

  637. His grace, along

  638. with faith and

  639. love, has

  640. overflowed for

  641. you.

  642. And Christ

  643. himself is the

  644. fountainhead of

  645. all this

  646. overflowing grace,

  647. faith, and love.

  648. Christ Jesus is

  649. mentioned four

  650. times in this

  651. passage alone.

  652. And Paul says

  653. in verse 14 that

  654. all these things

  655. overflowed for him

  656. in Christ Jesus.

  657. That's one of the

  658. most important

  659. phrases in the

  660. entire Bible.

  661. It's used nearly

  662. 90 times in the

  663. New Testament that

  664. we are in Christ

  665. Jesus.

  666. It speaks of our

  667. union with Christ,

  668. that we participate

  669. in Christ, that we

  670. are identified with

  671. Christ, that we

  672. are incorporated

  673. into Christ.

  674. And what this

  675. means, when Jesus

  676. was born in human

  677. likeness, he was

  678. born to identify

  679. with us so that he

  680. can represent us, so

  681. that he can bear our

  682. sins and iniquities

  683. and die on the

  684. cross in our place,

  685. and so that he can

  686. be raised from the

  687. dead, so that we

  688. can be united with

  689. him by faith and be

  690. restored to God and

  691. to spend eternity

  692. with him.

  693. That's the sweetest

  694. thing you could hear

  695. as a Christian, that

  696. we are in Christ

  697. Jesus.

  698. We are not in Adam

  699. anymore, our

  700. forefather who

  701. sinned against God

  702. and plunged us into

  703. our current state of

  704. brokenness and

  705. fallenness.

  706. We are now in

  707. Christ.

  708. We're in Christ.

  709. That means we are

  710. not on our own

  711. anymore.

  712. We don't stand on

  713. our own to bear the

  714. punishment for our

  715. sins all to

  716. ourselves.

  717. No, we are now in

  718. Christ because he

  719. paid for all our

  720. sins.

  721. That's what

  722. Christmas is all

  723. about.

  724. It's about the

  725. gospel of Jesus

  726. Christ, the good

  727. news of salvation.

  728. And verse 15 is as

  729. good a summary of

  730. the gospel as you

  731. will find in the

  732. entire Bible.

  733. The saying is

  734. trustworthy and

  735. deserving of full

  736. acceptance that

  737. Christ Jesus came

  738. into the world to

  739. save sinners of

  740. whom I am the

  741. foremost.

  742. This is the focal

  743. point of this

  744. entire passage.

  745. This passage also

  746. has a mirroring

  747. structure that we've

  748. seen throughout the

  749. gospel of Luke.

  750. Verse 12 and

  751. verse 17, they

  752. match each other,

  753. they mirror each

  754. other.

  755. He began with

  756. thanksgiving to

  757. God, he ends with

  758. praise to God, and

  759. he gives a

  760. contrasting statement

  761. about how sinful he

  762. was and how

  763. merciful God was

  764. toward him in

  765. verses 13 to 14

  766. and verse 16.

  767. Those two verses

  768. match each other.

  769. And the only verse

  770. that stands by

  771. itself without a

  772. matching element is

  773. verse 15 because

  774. that's the center,

  775. the crux that he's

  776. trying to bring our

  777. attention to.

  778. And that's this, the

  779. saying is trustworthy

  780. and deserving of

  781. full acceptance that

  782. Christ Jesus came into

  783. the world to save

  784. sinners of whom I am

  785. the foremost.

  786. most.

  787. In his letters to

  788. Timothy and Titus,

  789. five times Paul

  790. introduces a

  791. statement with this

  792. phrase, the saying

  793. is trustworthy.

  794. That's a signal that

  795. Paul is about to

  796. quote something, some

  797. piece of church

  798. creed, a traditional

  799. dogma that's been

  800. handed down that his

  801. audience would already

  802. be familiar with.

  803. This is a truth that

  804. is trustworthy that you

  805. already know and

  806. believe because this is

  807. what Christians of

  808. all, all Christians in

  809. all places at all

  810. times have believed.

  811. It's trustworthy and

  812. deserving of full

  813. acceptance that Christ

  814. Jesus came into the

  815. world to save sinners.

  816. And remember the word

  817. trustworthy is emphatic

  818. because he's repeated

  819. different forms of this

  820. word six times already

  821. in mere seven verses.

  822. He's emphasizing the

  823. importance of faith.

  824. That's why Christians are

  825. called believers.

  826. And this is what you

  827. must believe above

  828. everything else.

  829. The saying is

  830. trustworthy, deserving

  831. of full acceptance

  832. that Christ Jesus came

  833. into the world to save

  834. sinners of whom I am

  835. the foremost.

  836. That's the gospel of

  837. Jesus Christ.

  838. And it's good news

  839. because Jesus said

  840. earlier in Luke 5, 31

  841. and 32, those who are

  842. well have no need of a

  843. physician, but those who

  844. are sick.

  845. I have not come to call

  846. the righteous, but

  847. sinners to repentance.

  848. Salvation is not a

  849. tryout.

  850. It's a bailout.

  851. It's not for the

  852. righteous.

  853. It's for sinners.

  854. It's not help for those

  855. who help themselves.

  856. It's help for those who

  857. can't help themselves.

  858. It's not the survival of

  859. the fittest or the

  860. holiest.

  861. It is the salvation of

  862. those who humble

  863. themselves and acknowledge

  864. their sinfulness and

  865. unworthiness before God.

  866. There will be no saint in

  867. heaven that pats himself

  868. on the back and says,

  869. oh, I got here because of

  870. my many good deeds.

  871. Not a single one.

  872. There will be no saint in

  873. heaven who does not think

  874. himself to be a sinner

  875. saved by God's mercy.

  876. If you think you're a good

  877. person, if you think you

  878. deserve to go to heaven,

  879. surely if anyone gets in,

  880. I'll qualify.

  881. If that's you, you are part

  882. of the most at-risk population

  883. for falling into the fires

  884. of hell.

  885. Because you're self-righteous.

  886. Because you're prideful.

  887. Because you think you are

  888. self-sufficient and have no

  889. need for God's salvation.

  890. Jesus is not saying that

  891. there are actually people who

  892. are not sick and therefore

  893. don't need help.

  894. There's no one righteous.

  895. Everyone is sick with sin.

  896. And only those who

  897. acknowledge that fact

  898. and come to Jesus,

  899. the great physician for

  900. healing, will be saved.

  901. Yes, the church is a

  902. hospital for the sick.

  903. But it's not a hospital for

  904. people who refuse treatment

  905. insisting that they're not

  906. sick.

  907. Church is for those who

  908. acknowledge their

  909. sinfulness.

  910. The saying is trustworthy

  911. and deserving of full

  912. acceptance that Christ Jesus

  913. came into the world to save

  914. sinners of whom I am the

  915. foremost.

  916. Paul considers himself to be

  917. the foremost sinner.

  918. Can you believe that?

  919. And it almost sounds like

  920. he's proud of it.

  921. Why is that?

  922. It's because the worse

  923. sinner that he is,

  924. the more sins that he admits

  925. do, the greater the grace

  926. that overflowed from Christ

  927. Jesus to him.

  928. Highlighting his own

  929. sinfulness, Paul understands,

  930. magnifies the mercy of God.

  931. That's why as Christians,

  932. we don't have to hide our

  933. sins and wear masks and

  934. pretend that everything is

  935. okay.

  936. We don't have to be

  937. defensive.

  938. We should freely confess our

  939. sins to one another in order

  940. to magnify the grace of God

  941. in our lives.

  942. And it's by confessing our

  943. sins to one another that we

  944. receive God's mercy and find

  945. healing, as it says in James 5,

  946. 16.

  947. A Christian should live with an

  948. ever-present awareness that he

  949. is a forgiven sinner.

  950. That's who we are.

  951. That's what Paul did.

  952. That's why he uses the present

  953. tense when he says,

  954. I am the foremost.

  955. Not because he's currently

  956. blaspheming God and

  957. persecuting the church.

  958. No, he is living a holy life now.

  959. But still he says, I am the

  960. foremost because he is

  961. ever-presently aware of what a

  962. sinner he once was and how much

  963. he has been forgiven by God.

  964. John Stott, a British

  965. theologian puts it this way.

  966. Paul was so vividly aware of his

  967. own sins that he could not

  968. conceive that anybody could be

  969. worse.

  970. Are you more aware of your own

  971. sins or of the sins of others?

  972. We're not responsible for other

  973. people's sins.

  974. We're not going to be held

  975. accountable for them by God.

  976. But you will be held accountable

  977. for all of your own sins.

  978. Now that doesn't mean as a

  979. church we keep each other

  980. accountable.

  981. That is, we're called to that as

  982. brothers and sisters in Christ.

  983. What I'm speaking about is

  984. payment for sin.

  985. You're not going to have to pay

  986. for someone else's sin in the

  987. end.

  988. But you will have to pay for all

  989. of your own sins.

  990. So are you aware of your own

  991. sins?

  992. Remember your sins.

  993. Remember what you were formerly

  994. like so that you can remember

  995. the mercy of Christ and so that

  996. you don't lose your sense of

  997. wonder at God's mercy.

  998. 17th century.

  999. I don't know.

  1000. I didn't realize I was quoting all

  1001. these English pastors and

  1002. theologians.

1003. It's like the third one.

1004. The 17th century English pastor,

1005. they produce some good theologians,

  1006. I guess.

  1007. Yeah.

1008. John Bunyan in his autobiography,

1009. which is so aptly titled,

1010. Grace Abounding to the Chief of

  1011. Sinners.

  1012. He writes this,

1013. Oh, the remembrance of my great

1014. sins, of my great temptations,

1015. and of my great fears of perishing

  1016. forever.

1017. They bring afresh into my mind the

1018. remembrance of my great help, my

1019. great support from heaven, and the

1020. great grace that God extended to

  1021. such a wretch as I.

  1022. Christian brothers and sisters,

1023. it is our daily duty to remember

1024. our sins so that we can remember

1025. Christ's mercy because only then

1026. we will be filled with joy and

  1027. gratitude.

1028. Only then will our hearts delight in

1029. Christ rather than in the relatively

1030. trivial and fleeting pleasures of

  1031. this world.

1032. Only then will your heart be fortified

  1033. against pride and self-righteousness.

1034. And if you're not yet a follower of

1035. Christ, this is what the good news

  1036. means for you.

1037. Maybe you are a blasphemer,

  1038. persecutor, and insolent opponent.

  1039. Maybe you're a thief, a domestic

  1040. abuser, and a murderer.

  1041. Maybe you're a gossip, a liar, a

  1042. slanderer.

  1043. Maybe you're a porn addict, alcoholic,

  1044. or a drug addict.

  1045. Maybe you're a fornicator, a

  1046. homosexual, or an adulterer.

  1047. Maybe you're a sexist, a

  1048. Jewish, and a racist.

1049. Whatever your past is like,

1050. whoever you might be, if you would

1051. only repent of your sins and believe

1052. in Jesus Christ for salvation,

1053. if you would only renounce yourself,

1054. your own sovereignty and independence,

1055. and pledge allegiance to Jesus Christ,

1056. then from the fountainhead of Jesus

1057. will flow, overflow for you,

1058. grace, love, faith sufficient to meet

  1059. all of your needs.

1060. Where sin increased, his grace will

  1061. abound all the more.

1062. And not only that, he will empower you

1063. and entrust to you the precious gospel

  1064. of Jesus Christ.

1065. He will make you his ambassador,

1066. his representative to relay his message

1067. of salvation to the world.

1068. Not everybody is called to proclaim

1069. the gospel as a vocation, as his job.

1070. But if you are a Christian,

1071. it is your calling to share the gospel

1072. of Jesus Christ with your family,

  1073. friends, neighbors, and coworkers.

1074. That is the calling of every single Christian.

1075. It is amazing grace that God would entrust to us

1076. the precious gospel of Jesus

  1077. to sinners like us.

1078. And having given his profile as a recipient of mercy,

1079. Paul proceeds to talk about the reasons for mercy,

1080. and he gives two reasons.

1081. One is in verse 13, and another in verse 16.

1082. He says in verse 13,

  1083. It's the first reason.

1084. Paul's not saying that he deserved mercy

1085. because he has sinned ignorantly in unbelief.

  1086. As I've explained,

1087. deserved mercy is a contradiction in terms.

1088. Now, think of it this way.

1089. If you're pulled over by a police officer

  1090. for going 80 on a 60-mile-per-hour highway,

1091. it's no use for you to tell him,

  1092. I didn't know the speed limit was 60.

1093. You're still going to get your ticket

1094. because ignorance does not erase your guilt.

1095. You're still guilty of the misdemeanor or infraction.

1096. However, if you tell the police officer

1097. that you are speeding because you got a phone call,

1098. that your wife is giving birth,

1099. he will probably still give you a ticket.

1100. But he might be more gracious to you

  1101. because that's a mitigating factor.

1102. What Paul's saying here is similar to that.

1103. He's not saying that ignorance and unbelief

1104. makes him deserving of mercy.

1105. He's saying that ignorance and unbelief

  1106. were a mitigating factor

1107. that God took into consideration.

1108. Ignorance does not diminish your guilt,

1109. but it does make pardon and forgiveness easier.

1110. The Bible consistently makes the distinction

1111. between unintentional sins and defiant sins,

1112. or between ignorant sins and willful sins.

  1113. For example, Numbers 15, 22-31

  1114. prescribes various sin offerings

  1115. for unintentional sins.

1116. But at the end of that passage in verse 30,

  1117. it says,

  1118. In other words,

1119. all kinds of unintentional sins may be forgiven,

1120. but there is no forgiveness for willful,

  1121. knowing, presumptuous, defiant,

  1122. high-handed sins against God.

1123. That's what Bible calls elsewhere

1124. the blasphemy against the Holy Spirit.

  1125. To know God,

1126. to have experienced something of His presence,

1127. and yet to defy Him,

  1128. to turn against Him,

1129. and with a high hand sin against Him.

1130. Luke also makes this distinction later

  1131. in Luke 23, verse 34,

    Luke 23:34

1132. when Jesus is hanging on the cross,

1133. He prays for the people that are crucifying Him.

  1134. He says,

  1135. Father, forgive them,

1136. for they know not what they do.

1137. On the basis that people who are crucifying Jesus

  1138. don't know what they're actually doing,

1139. Jesus prays on their behalf

1140. that God might mercifully forgive them.

1141. So what Paul's saying here is similar.

1142. He's saying that God mercifully took into account

1143. the fact that Paul was formerly acting

  1144. ignorantly in unbelief.

  1145. That's the first reason.

1146. And the second reason for mercy

1147. is given in verse 16.

1148. But I received mercy for this reason,

  1149. that in me,

  1150. as the foremost,

  1151. Jesus Christ might display

  1152. His perfect patience

1153. as an example to those

1154. who were to believe in Him

  1155. for eternal life.

1156. This is so remarkable to me.

  1157. This is Apostle Paul

  1158. giving the reason

1159. why he thinks he was saved.

  1160. Remember that this is

  1161. arguably,

1162. and in my mind pretty clearly,

1163. the best theologian to ever live on earth.

1164. Not counting Jesus, of course.

1165. He's the object of theology.

  1166. He's God.

  1167. This is Apostle Paul

1168. who wrote most of the New Testament,

1169. inspired the authoritative word of God.

  1170. This is Apostle Paul

  1171. who planted churches

1172. in most of the known world at the time.

1173. This is the Apostle Paul

1174. probably because of his preaching of the gospel.

1175. Tens of thousands of people

1176. are now in the presence of the Lord.

  1177. And he says,

  1178. what's the reason

  1179. why God saved me?

  1180. He does not say,

  1181. God gave me mercy

1182. so that I might become

1183. the greatest theologian in the world

1184. and write most of the New Testament.

  1185. He doesn't say,

  1186. God gave me mercy

  1187. because he knew

1188. that I would plant churches

1189. in most of the known world

  1190. and share the gospel

1191. with tens of thousands of people.

  1192. Paul says,

1193. this is why he thinks he was saved.

  1194. He received mercy.

1195. No, God gave me mercy

1196. so that he could use me

  1197. as an example

  1198. of how gracious

  1199. and patient he is.

  1200. Because I'm such a wretched sinner.

  1201. Because I'm so undeserving

  1202. of his salvation.

1203. That's why God saved me.

1204. So that when people look at me,

  1205. they will say,

1206. well, if God could save him,

1207. he could surely save me.

1208. If God would have mercy on me,

1209. he would surely have mercy on me.

  1210. On him,

1211. he would surely have mercy on me.

  1212. That's why Paul thinks

1213. God had mercy on him.

  1214. Jesus didn't save us

  1215. because we're great.

  1216. He saves us

  1217. because he's great.

  1218. Jesus didn't save us

1219. because he saw great potential in us.

  1220. He saves us

1221. because he sees in us

  1222. a potential

  1223. to reveal God's mercy

  1224. and grace in.

  1225. brothers and sisters,

  1226. we're in trouble

1227. if we start to be more impressed

  1228. with ourselves

  1229. than with God.

1230. If we start to be more impressed

  1231. with our own righteousness

  1232. than with God's mercy.

  1233. Salvation is not

  1234. primarily about us.

  1235. the primary purpose

  1236. of our salvation

  1237. is to display

  1238. the glory of God,

  1239. to display

  1240. the mercy of God.

  1241. That's why Paul

  1242. concludes,

  1243. fittingly,

  1244. this passage

  1245. with praise to God.

  1246. And that brings me

  1247. to my final point,

  1248. the response to mercy.

  1249. Paul began this passage

  1250. with thanksgiving to Christ

  1251. in verse 12.

  1252. I thank him

1253. who has given me strength,

  1254. Christ Jesus,

  1255. our Lord,

  1256. because he judged me

  1257. faithful,

  1258. appointing me

  1259. to his service.

  1260. And he also ends

  1261. this passage

  1262. with praise to God

  1263. in verse 17.

1264. To the king of the ages,

  1265. immortal,

  1266. invisible,

  1267. the only God,

  1268. be honor and glory

  1269. forever and ever.

  1270. Amen.

  1271. Amen.

1272. And in this concluding verse,

  1273. Paul describes God

  1274. with the triad again

  1275. of attributes.

  1276. Remember Christ's grace,

  1277. faith,

  1278. and love

  1279. overflow to meet

  1280. Paul's blasphemy,

  1281. persecution,

  1282. and insolence.

1283. Now all honor and glory

  1284. is due to God

1285. because he is the king

  1286. of the ages,

  1287. immortal,

  1288. invisible.

  1289. These three words,

  1290. the word ages

  1291. is the exact same

  1292. Greek word

  1293. that's translated

  1294. in verse 16

  1295. as eternal.

  1296. So it's saying

  1297. that God

  1298. is the king

  1299. of the ages,

  1300. meaning king

  1301. of all ages,

  1302. king of eternity.

  1303. And in the Greek,

  1304. the word ages,

  1305. immortal,

  1306. invisible,

  1307. they all start

  1308. with the exact

  1309. same letter.

  1310. So it's alliterative.

  1311. So to capture

  1312. that in English,

  1313. we might say

  1314. something like this,

  1315. to the king

  1316. of infinity,

  1317. immortal,

  1318. invisible,

  1319. the only God,

  1320. be honor and glory

  1321. forever and ever.

  1322. Amen.

  1323. Amen.

  1324. Because salvation

  1325. is entirely of God.

  1326. Only God

  1327. deserves the honor

  1328. and glory.

  1329. We can't take

  1330. an ounce of credit

  1331. for our own salvation.

  1332. God deserves

  1333. all the honor

  1334. and glory

  1335. because the basis

  1336. of our salvation

  1337. is not our merit,

  1338. but God's mercy.

  1339. Only God

  1340. deserves

  1341. the honor

  1342. and glory

  1343. forever.

  1344. Think about this.

  1345. God is infinite.

  1346. We are

  1347. bound to time,

  1348. temporal,

  1349. perishing,

  1350. finite beings.

  1351. God's immortal

  1352. and incorruptible.

  1353. We are decaying

  1354. and dying.

  1355. God dwells

  1356. in unapproachable light.

  1357. He's transcendent.

  1358. He's untouchable.

  1359. He's invisible.

  1360. But we are visible.

  1361. We're touchable.

  1362. We're flesh and bones.

  1363. And yet,

  1364. this God

  1365. deigns to send

  1366. His Son

1367. in the form of man

  1368. to save

  1369. us.

  1370. this makes God's mercy

  1371. all the more staggering.

  1372. This is not

  1373. dispassionate,

  1374. you know,

  1375. abstract theology

  1376. for Paul.

  1377. That's why he

  1378. spontaneously breaks out

  1379. into praise

  1380. in verse 17.

  1381. This is for him

  1382. very practical

  1383. and very personal.

  1384. For him,

  1385. theology,

  1386. which is the study

  1387. of God,

  1388. always leads

  1389. to doxology,

  1390. which is the worship

  1391. of God.

  1392. That's how theology

  1393. should be.

  1394. It should be steeped

  1395. in gratitude.

  1396. It should be impassioned

  1397. with love for God.

  1398. It should be

  1399. bubbling over

  1400. at all times

  1401. with praise

  1402. and worship to God.

  1403. That's true theology.

  1404. And that's why Paul

1405. uses so many personal pronouns

  1406. in this passage.

1407. He uses the personal pronoun

  1408. I

  1409. six times

  1410. and the pronoun

  1411. me

  1412. twice.

  1413. The mercy

  1414. of Christ

  1415. is personal

  1416. to Paul

  1417. and likewise

  1418. we ought to

  1419. personally

  1420. entrust ourselves

  1421. to Christ Jesus

  1422. who saves sinners

  1423. by his mercy.

  1424. Brothers and sisters,

  1425. I know

  1426. that you

  1427. understand

  1428. the gospel

  1429. of Jesus Christ

  1430. in your head

  1431. and that you believe

  1432. that it's true.

1433. But I want to ask you

  1434. this morning,

  1435. is the gospel

  1436. of Jesus Christ

  1437. real

  1438. in your heart

  1439. this morning?

  1440. or is it just

  1441. theoretical to you?

  1442. Is the mercy

  1443. of Jesus Christ

  1444. personal to you?

1445. Can you speak of it

  1446. with I's

  1447. and me's?

  1448. Or can you only

  1449. speak of it

  1450. in terms of

  1451. they's

  1452. and them's?

  1453. Is this

  1454. your faith

  1455. or is this

  1456. your parents' faith?

  1457. Is this

  1458. your friends'

  1459. faith?

  1460. Is this

  1461. your spouse's

  1462. faith?

  1463. Is this

  1464. your other

  1465. church members'

  1466. faith?

  1467. Can you say

  1468. this is my faith?

  1469. Jesus is my

  1470. Lord,

  1471. my Savior,

  1472. that I

  1473. have received

  1474. mercy.

  1475. Can you

  1476. say that?

  1477. are you

  1478. excited

  1479. to worship

  1480. God along

  1481. with your

  1482. brothers and

  1483. sisters?

  1484. Are you

  1485. eager to

  1486. share the

  1487. gospel with

  1488. your friends

  1489. and your

  1490. family and

  1491. your neighbors?

  1492. Or are you

  1493. just going

  1494. through the

  1495. motions?

  1496. this saying

  1497. is trustworthy

  1498. and worthy

  1499. of full

  1500. acceptance

  1501. that Christ

  1502. Jesus came

  1503. into the

  1504. world to

  1505. save sinners

  1506. of whom I

  1507. am the

  1508. foremost.

  1509. I hope

  1510. you can

  1511. say amen

  1512. to that.

  1513. That's how

  1514. Paul concludes

  1515. this passage

  1516. by saying

  1517. amen.

  1518. And this

  1519. is an

  1520. invitation to

  1521. his readers

  1522. to join

  1523. him in

  1524. affirming

  1525. what he

  1526. has just

  1527. said.

  1528. It was

  1529. common practice

  1530. among the

  1531. Jews in the

  1532. Old Testament

  1533. to respond

  1534. to the

  1535. praise of

  1536. God with

  1537. this

  1538. declaration

  1539. of

  1540. affirmation.

  1541. Amen.

  1542. It means

  1543. I believe.

  1544. So be

  1545. it.

  1546. It affirms

  1547. that what

  1548. has been

  1549. said is

  1550. valid and

  1551. binding.

  1552. And this

  1553. practice has

  1554. been continued

  1555. by Christians

  1556. over the

  1557. last two

  1558. millennia.

  1559. Because

  1560. the saying

  1561. is trustworthy

  1562. and deserving

  1563. of full

  1564. acceptance

  1565. that Christ

  1566. Jesus came

  1567. into the

  1568. world to

  1569. save sinners.

  1570. We should

  1571. say amen.

  1572. This is

  1573. true.

  1574. It's not

  1575. hypothetical.

  1576. It's actual.

  1577. It's real.

  1578. So we don't

  1579. respond with

  1580. this quizzical

  1581. maybe.

  1582. We say

  1583. amen.

  1584. I was a

  1585. blasphemer,

  1586. persecutor,

  1587. and insolent

  1588. opponent.

  1589. I was the

  1590. foremost of

  1591. sinners,

  1592. but I,

  1593. but I

  1594. received

  1595. mercy.

  1596. Amen.

  1597. I believe

  1598. it.

  1599. To the

  1600. king of

  1601. the ages,

  1602. immortal,

  1603. invisible,

  1604. the only

  1605. God,

  1606. the honor

  1607. and glory

  1608. forever and

  1609. ever,

  1610. because it

  1611. is the

  1612. deepest

  1613. desire of

  1614. our own

  1615. hearts to

  1616. see this

  1617. merciful God

  1618. praised and

  1619. honored and

  1620. glorified,

  1621. so we don't

  1622. respond with

  1623. the lukewarm

  1624. men.

  1625. But with a

  1626. hearty

  1627. amen,

  1628. so be

  1629. it.

  1630. I pray

  1631. all of you

  1632. this morning

  1633. will one

  1634. day be able

  1635. to say

  1636. from the

  1637. very bottom

  1638. of your

  1639. hearts,

  1640. amen to

  1641. that.

  1642. please take

  1643. a moment

  1644. not to

  1645. reflect

  1646. on this

  1647. truth.

  1648. If you

  1649. want to,

  1650. you can

  1651. close your

  1652. eyes.

  1653. I

  1654. received

  1655. mercy.

  1656. Think about

  1657. that reality.

  1658. Reflect on

  1659. that.

  1660. And then

  1661. we're going

  1662. to spend

  1663. some time

  1664. praying out

  1665. loud as a

  1666. church.
