  1. Let me pray for the reading and preaching of God's word.

  2. Heavenly Father,

  3. we know that our salvation

  4. and every progress we make in the spiritual life,

  5. they depend on what Christ did,

  6. his death, his resurrection,

  7. and his sending of your Holy Spirit.

  8. Lord, we don't want to lose sight of that.

  9. We want to remember that truth daily.

  10. We want to live in accordance with that truth.

  11. Amen.

  12. Because that's where the power

  13. and perseverance for every believer come.

  14. So we pray that you'd remind us of that.

  15. And as you always do,

  16. speak to us this morning

  17. in the reading and preaching of your word.

  18. In Jesus' name we pray.

  19. Amen.

  20. Amen.

  21. Luke 24, verses 1 to 12.

    Luke 24:1–12

  22. But on the first day of the week,

  23. at early dawn,

  24. they went to the tomb,

  25. taking the spices they had prepared.

  26. And they found the stone rolled away from the tomb.

  27. But when they went in,

  28. they did not find the body of the Lord Jesus.

  29. While they were perplexed about this,

  30. behold,

  31. two men stood by them in dazzling apparel.

  32. And as they were frightened

  33. and bowed their faces to the ground,

  34. the men said to them,

  35. why do you seek the living among the dead?

  36. He is not here,

  37. but has risen.

  38. Remember how he told you while he was still in Galilee

  39. that the Son of Man must be delivered

  40. into the hands of sinful men

  41. and be crucified

  42. and on the third day rise.

  43. And they remembered his words.

  44. And returning from the tomb,

  45. they told all these things

  46. to the eleven and to all the rest.

  47. Now, it was Mary Magdalene and Joanna

  48. and Mary the mother of James

  49. and the other woman with them

  50. who told these things to the apostles.

  51. But these words seemed to them an idle tale,

  52. and they did not believe them.

  53. But Peter rose and ran to the tomb,

  54. stooping and looking in.

  55. He saw the linen cloths by themselves,

  56. and he went home marveling at what had happened.

  57. This is God's holy and authoritative word.

  58. Every single human being that has ever graced

  59. the history books that we read has died

  60. and is dead,

  61. except for one,

  62. our Lord Jesus.

  63. The death which has plagued humanity since Adam,

  64. the very first human,

  65. was defeated at the resurrection of our Lord Jesus.

  66. So that we who trust in him

  67. are promised eternal resurrection life.

  68. And if you really grasp this

  69. and come to grips with this reality,

  70. then your life is not going to be the same.

  71. You can't return to business as usual.

  72. It changes your life.

  73. It gives you his resurrection power.

  74. And that's my prayer for us this morning

  75. as we go through this passage,

  76. that we'll be confronted with the reality

  77. of the resurrection

  78. so that we live every day

  79. believing and remembering

  80. the good news that Jesus Christ

  81. was delivered, crucified,

  82. and raised to give us life.

  83. That's the main point of this passage.

  84. I'm going to talk about it in two points.

  85. First, we're going to talk about

  86. remembering the word of Christ.

  87. And secondly, we'll talk about

  88. believing the word of Christ.

  89. Before we dive right into our chapter, though,

  90. look back with me at the last two verses

  91. of chapter 23, which we covered last week.

  92. It says,

  93. So it was customary in those days

  94. for people, the loved ones that are remaining,

  95. to take the deceased person's body,

  96. to wash it, anoint it, and wrap it

  97. so that it doesn't decompose too rapidly.

  98. And so these faithful women

  99. who, unlike most of Jesus' 12 apostles,

  100. accompany Jesus to the end,

  101. they are getting ready for their life

  102. after Jesus.

  103. They expect Jesus' body to rot

  104. after his death.

  105. So they prepare spices and ornaments.

  106. And as all the faithful Jews did,

  107. these women, on the Sabbath,

  108. they rest according to the commandment.

  109. So Jesus has died,

  110. and now they are returning to their lives,

  111. their old lives,

  112. business as usual.

  113. But something unusual is about to happen.

  114. It says in verse 1 of chapter 24,

  115. But on the first day of the week

  116. at early dawn,

  117. they went to the tomb,

  118. taking the spices they had prepared.

  119. So the Jewish Sabbath runs from

  120. Friday sundown to Saturday sundown,

  121. but probably because it's hard

  122. to locate a cave in a tomb,

  123. a tomb in a cave that's in the dark

  124. in the middle of the night.

  125. They went away for daylight.

  126. And as soon as there's light

  127. at the crack of dawn,

  128. they go to anoint Jesus' body.

  129. And every one of the four gospels,

  130. as Luke does here,

  131. records that Jesus was raised from the dead

  132. on the first day of the week.

  133. They also use sometimes,

  134. as Luke later does,

  135. the more traditional formula that we know

  136. on the third day.

  137. But this is intentional.

  138. There is a reason why they say

  139. that Jesus was raised on the first day,

  140. and they emphasize that

  141. because it conveys a note of hope

  142. and renewal.

  143. And this is in the same way,

  144. that's for the same reason

  145. we like the new year.

  146. Something fresh,

  147. something new,

  148. a clean slate,

  149. a hope,

  150. new beginning.

  151. That's what that first day represents.

  152. Jesus' resurrection

  153. makes all things new.

  154. And that's why Christians

  155. from the earliest times

  156. switch their worship time and day

  157. to Sunday

  158. to commemorate the resurrection

  159. of the Lord Jesus

  160. and to worship on that day

  161. instead of on the Saturday,

  162. on the Sabbath,

  163. as Jews had historically done.

  164. And not just on the first day of the week,

  165. the woman also journeyed

  166. to the tomb,

  167. it says,

  168. at early dawn.

  169. And Luke,

  170. like John,

  171. makes use of this light-darkness motif

  172. throughout his gospel.

  173. Just before Jesus' birth,

  174. his would-be uncle,

  175. Zechariah,

  176. prophesies in Luke 1,

  177. 78-79,

  178. the sunrise shall visit us

  179. from on high

  180. to give light

  181. to those who sit in darkness

  182. and in the shadow of death

  183. to guide our feet

  184. into the way of peace.

  185. And Jesus teaches

  186. in Luke 11,

  187. 34-35,

  188. your eye is the lamp

  189. of your body.

  190. When your eye is healthy,

  191. your whole body

  192. is full of light.

  193. But when it is bad,

  194. your body is full of darkness.

  195. Therefore,

  196. be careful

  197. lest the light in you

  198. be darkness.

  199. And notably,

  200. just when Jesus

  201. was being delivered

  202. into the hands

  203. of sinful men

  204. to be tried and executed,

  205. Jesus said

  206. in Luke 22,

    Luke 22:53

  207. verse 53,

  208. when I was with you

  209. day after day

  210. in the temple,

  211. you did not lay hands on me,

  212. but this is your hour

  213. and the power

  214. of darkness.

  215. And when Jesus

  216. finally breathed his last,

  217. he says in Luke 23,

    Luke 23:44

  218. verse 44,

  219. there was darkness

  220. over the whole land.

  221. Luke is playing

  222. on this motif

  223. to tell us

  224. that something is happening.

  225. It's the early dawn.

  226. The woman had come

  227. to mourn Jesus.

  228. They had come

  229. to see death,

  230. a grotesque reality,

  231. but it's the first day

  232. of the week.

  233. It's early dawn

  234. and something strange

  235. and radical

  236. and new

  237. is afoot.

  238. And we find

  239. the first clue

  240. of Jesus' resurrection

  241. in verse 2.

  242. And they find

  243. the stone rolled

  244. away from the tomb.

  245. So in those days,

  246. a tomb cut in stone

  247. would be covered

  248. with this big

  249. kind of slab

  250. of disc-like stone.

  251. It'd be rolled

  252. in front of it

  253. to cover it up

  254. and keep people

  255. just that have

  256. no business

  257. being in there

  258. from getting into it.

  259. And so the fact

  260. that the stone

  261. is rolled away

  262. suggests some kind

  263. of tempering.

  264. Something's happened.

  265. But this doesn't

  266. deter the woman.

  267. Mark 16, 3,

  268. a parallel account

  269. tells us that

  270. the women were asking

  271. themselves,

  272. who among them

  273. will roll away

  274. the stone?

  275. So they're probably

  276. a little relieved

  277. that it's rolled away,

  278. but they're probably

  279. also troubled.

  280. Maybe they're wondering

  281. there was a grave robbery,

  282. which was common

  283. in those days,

  284. although that robber

  285. would not have found

  286. much to take

  287. in this tomb.

  288. So they head right on in,

  289. still expecting

  290. to find Jesus' body

  291. there.

  292. But,

  293. it says in verse 3,

  294. when they went in,

  295. they did not find

  296. the body

  297. of the Lord Jesus.

  298. Notice that there's

  299. a repetition

  300. of the word find

  301. in verses 2 to 3.

  302. It forms a nice contrast

  303. between verse 2

  304. and verse 3

  305. and heightens

  306. our expectation

  307. for the resurrection.

  308. Because in verse 2,

  309. they found

  310. the stone rolled away

  311. from the tomb.

  312. But when they went in,

  313. they did not find

  314. the body of the Lord.

  315. The stone they

  316. did not expect

  317. to find rolled away,

  318. they found rolled away.

  319. And the body

  320. that they did expect

  321. to find,

  322. they did not find.

  323. What could this

  324. possibly mean?

  325. So verse 4 continues,

  326. while they were

  327. perplexed about this,

  328. behold,

  329. two men stood by them

  330. in dazzling apparel.

  331. We learn later

  332. in verse 23

  333. that these are,

  334. in fact,

  335. angels.

  336. Throughout Scripture,

  337. angels often appear

  338. in the likeness

  339. of man,

  340. human likeness.

  341. And the dazzling apparel

  342. is a clue to this

  343. because Luke

  344. often describes

  345. heavenly beings

  346. with this word,

  347. dazzling.

  348. So example in Luke 9,

  349. 29 to 30,

  350. when Jesus is transfigured

  351. into his heavenly glory,

  352. it says that his clothing

  353. became dazzling white

  354. and behold,

  355. two men were talking

  356. with him.

  357. So this is,

  358. there's a lot of parallels

  359. between the transfiguration

  360. and the resurrection.

  361. And the presence

  362. of the two angels,

  363. it reflects

  364. the scriptural precedent

  365. for requiring

  366. two or three witnesses,

  367. at least two witnesses,

  368. in order to establish

  369. a testimony as valid.

  370. So earlier in Luke 10,

    Luke 10:1

  371. verse 1,

  372. Jesus sent out

  373. his disciples

  374. to proclaim

  375. the kingdom of God

  376. and of course

  377. when he did that,

  378. he sent them out

  379. two by two

  380. so that their testimony

  381. and witness is valid.

  382. And in Luke 23,

    Luke 23:16

  383. verse 16,

  384. Luke carefully noted

  385. that two civil authorities,

  386. not one,

  387. all the other

  388. gospel writers

  389. only note one,

  390. but Luke notes

  391. that both Herod

  392. and Pilate

  393. bore witness

  394. to Jesus' innocence.

  395. and so now,

  396. there's,

  397. and actually not even

  398. just during the trial,

  399. but also at his execution,

  400. both the centurion

  401. and the criminal

  402. crucified next to him

  403. declare his innocence.

  404. So in each juncture,

  405. Luke is very careful

  406. to show us

  407. there are two witnesses.

  408. This is a valid testimony.

  409. Jesus is innocent

  410. by all accounts.

  411. And here,

  412. his resurrection

  413. is attested to

  414. by two angels

  415. for that reason.

  416. And this is,

  417. this kind of literary emphasis

  418. is why you find

  419. some variations

  420. in the resurrection accounts.

  421. So some of the other

  422. gospel writers

  423. only include one angel

  424. and because that's not a focus.

  425. They only needed one angel

  426. to display their purposes,

  427. to fulfill their purposes

  428. in writing.

  429. So these discrepancies

  430. are not irreconcilable.

  431. They're complementary

  432. rather than contradictory

  433. findings.

  434. And what's important

  435. is that the basic framework

  436. is all the same

  437. in every single

  438. gospel account.

  439. All of the accounts

  440. are set in the early morning

  441. of the first day

  442. of the week, Sunday,

  443. with Mary Magdalene

  444. sometimes accompanied

  445. by other women

  446. going to the tomb.

  447. The resurrection occurs

  448. when the disciples

  449. are not expecting it.

  450. The initial reports

  451. are doubted.

  452. The women are the first

  453. to witness the empty tomb.

  454. The stone is rolled away.

  455. The tomb is empty.

  456. The angels appear.

  457. And then later,

  458. Jesus appears

  459. to a variety of people

  460. leading to firm

  461. belief in the early church

  462. in the bodily resurrection

  463. of Jesus.

  464. Every single one

  465. of the gospels,

  466. every single resurrection

  467. account has all of those

  468. skeletal consistencies.

  469. There's extraordinary

  470. consistency in that regard.

  471. And if you think about it

  472. a little bit further

  473. and you're tempted

  474. to doubt these accounts,

  475. the minor discrepancies

  476. in eyewitness reports

  477. are not all that surprising.

  478. People often wrongly assume

  479. that various eyewitness reports

  480. of the same event

  481. would be identical.

  482. But they rarely are.

  483. It's common knowledge

  484. among forensic scientists

  485. that eyewitness accounts vary

  486. because both human perception

  487. and human memory

  488. fluctuate and vary.

  489. And depending on who you are,

  490. what your background is,

  491. your attributes,

  492. and your experience,

  493. what you perceive,

  494. what makes the deepest impression

  495. on you,

  496. and how you interpret

  497. that sensory experience,

  498. it all varies.

  499. And how much you recall

  500. of it all varies.

  501. So if two independent eyewitnesses

  502. were to give in court

  503. an identical testimony

  504. to forensic lawyers,

  505. there would be a clear red flag

  506. that there was collusion involved,

  507. that they're not giving

  508. independent eyewitness testimonies.

  509. So the fact that there's

  510. some minor variations

  511. in these kinds,

  512. which, by the way,

  513. are not irreconcilable,

  514. shows that these are actually

  515. authentic accounts.

  516. That's not a fiction

  517. developed by the early church.

  518. With that aside,

  519. let's return to the text.

  520. After encountering the angels,

  521. it says in verse 5,

  522. and as they were frightened

  523. and bowed their faces

  524. to the ground,

  525. the men said to them,

  526. why do you seek

  527. the living among the dead?

  528. He is not here,

  529. but has risen.

  530. But the fear

  531. is a common response

  532. to angelic

  533. or divine encounters.

  534. But the angels

  535. offer hopeful words

  536. to them.

  537. Why do you seek

  538. the living among the dead?

  539. He is not here,

  540. but has risen.

  541. The verb has risen

  542. is actually passive

  543. in the Greek.

  544. So it should be

  545. has been raised.

  546. It's a divine passive.

  547. When there's a passive

  548. word that's not,

  549. doesn't have a subject

  550. that's identified,

  551. scripture writers

  552. are using a divine passive

  553. to indicate that God

  554. is the agent

  555. of that action.

  556. So who raised Jesus

  557. from the dead?

  558. God,

  559. the father himself,

  560. the almighty God,

  561. the creator of life

  562. himself,

  563. is the one who raised

  564. Jesus from the dead.

  565. And so the woman

  566. should not be searching

  567. for Jesus among the dead.

  568. He should be sought

  569. among the living.

  570. And this leads

  571. to a gentle prodding

  572. from the angels

  573. in verses six to seven.

  574. Remember how he told you

  575. while he was still

  576. in Galilee

  577. that the son of man

  578. must be delivered

  579. into the hands

  580. of sinful men

  581. and be crucified

  582. and on the third day

  583. rise.

  584. The angels are reminding

  585. the woman

  586. that Jesus

  587. had already told them

  588. that this would,

  589. exactly this thing

  590. would happen.

  591. And he did

  592. in multiple occasions.

  593. Luke 9, 22

  594. and Luke 18, 32, 33.

  595. Jesus prophesied

  596. of his suffering,

  597. his death,

  598. his resurrection

  599. on the third day,

  600. all of it.

  601. And this is the more

  602. traditional form

  603. of the third day.

  604. It's the tradition

  605. that's preserved

  606. in 1 Corinthians 15, 4

  607. and later in the

  608. Apostles Creed

  609. passed down to us

  610. that Jesus was raised

  611. on the third day.

  612. And this also has

  613. biblical precedent

  614. and meaning.

  615. In Genesis 22,

  616. after journeying

  617. for three days

  618. in order to sacrifice

  619. his beloved son,

  620. the only son

  621. of his wife,

  622. Sarah, Isaac,

  623. Abraham is delivered

  624. on the third day.

  625. God provides a substitute,

  626. a lamb,

  627. to sacrifice

  628. so that Isaac

  629. can be spared.

  630. In Hosea 6,

  631. which we read

  632. for call to worship

  633. this morning,

  634. while prophesying

  635. of the impending judgment

  636. on the nation of Israel

  637. for their sins,

  638. he utters this promise,

  639. come,

  640. let us return to the Lord

  641. for he has torn us

  642. that he may heal us.

  643. He has struck us down

  644. and he will bind us up.

  645. After two days,

  646. he will revive us.

  647. On the third day,

  648. he will raise us up

  649. that we may live

  650. before him.

  651. And the prophet Jonah

  652. is swallowed up

  653. by a great fish

  654. and dwells in the belly

  655. of this great fish

  656. because of his disobedience

  657. to God.

  658. And it's on the third day

  659. that God delivers him.

  660. And Matthew 12,

  661. 40 makes an explicit

  662. connection between

  663. his third day

  664. resurrection of sorts

  665. and Christ's resurrection

  666. on the third day.

  667. So Jesus had very

  668. specifically predicted this.

  669. He said in Luke 18,

  670. 32 to 33,

  671. for he,

  672. referring to himself,

  673. will be delivered

  674. over to the Gentiles

  675. and will be mocked

  676. and shamefully treated

  677. and spit upon.

  678. And after flogging him,

  679. they will kill him.

  680. And on the third day,

  681. he will rise.

  682. As the history

  683. of redemption shows

  684. and as Jesus'

  685. own prophecy shows,

  686. the woman should have expected

  687. something to happen

  688. on the third day.

  689. They should have expected

  690. the resurrection.

  691. And so the angels

  692. exhort them

  693. to remember.

  694. They try to jog

  695. their memory.

  696. And their exhortation

  697. produces this pattern

  698. of word

  699. and response.

  700. In verse 6,

  701. the angels told the woman,

  702. remember how he told you.

  703. And then in verse 8,

  704. they respond.

  705. They remembered his words.

  706. In verse 5,

  707. the angel said to the woman,

  708. why do you seek

  709. the living among the dead?

  710. And in verse 9,

  711. we see the woman respond

  712. by returning from the tomb

  713. to the land of the living.

  714. So sandwiched between these

  715. word and response accounts

  716. is verse 7,

  717. which is the focal point

  718. of this entire passage,

  719. that the Son of Man

  720. must be delivered

  721. into the hands

  722. of sinful men

  723. and be crucified

  724. and on the third day rise.

  725. That's the heart

  726. of Christianity.

  727. That's the basic facts

  728. of the gospel.

  729. It says that the Son of Man

  730. must be delivered,

  731. but why is Jesus' betrayal

  732. and his sentence

  733. and execution

  734. and resurrection

  735. necessary?

  736. Luke often uses the word

  737. must or ought

  738. to describe something

  739. that God has foreordained.

  740. It's a divine necessity.

  741. Why is this

  742. a divine necessity?

  743. It says in Leviticus 17,

  744. 11,

  745. for the life

  746. of the flesh

  747. is in the blood

  748. and I have given it

  749. for you

  750. on the altar

  751. to make atonement

  752. for your souls.

  753. For it is the blood

  754. that makes atonement

  755. by the life.

  756. It's in the shedding

  757. of the life blood

  758. that there is atonement

  759. for sins

  760. because as Romans 6,

  761. 23 says,

  762. the wages of sin

  763. is death.

  764. Only death

  765. atones for sin.

  766. And all of the Old Testament

  767. sacrifices

  768. were intended

  769. to foreshadow,

  770. point to the ultimate

  771. atonement that takes place

  772. and that Hebrews 9,

  773. 12 describes.

  774. Jesus entered

  775. once for all

  776. into the holy places

  777. not by means

  778. of the blood

  779. of goats and calves

  780. but by means

  781. of his own blood.

  782. Thus securing

  783. an eternal redemption.

  784. There was a price

  785. that had to be paid.

  786. apart from us

  787. paying the price

  788. with our own death,

  789. there could be

  790. no satisfaction

  791. for sins.

  792. We were doomed.

  793. That was our fate.

  794. But Jesus

  795. took our place.

  796. He did

  797. what must happen.

  798. He did

  799. what was

  800. necessitated

  801. by our sins

  802. and by God's love

  803. towards sinners.

  804. And he did that

  805. by atoning

  806. for our sins

  807. and shedding

  808. his life blood

  809. pouring it out

  810. on our behalf.

  811. And so

  812. just as Adam,

  813. the first man

  814. and representative,

  815. the head of humanity,

  816. sinned

  817. and through his sin

  818. death came to all

  819. of humanity

  820. and now

  821. through Jesus

  822. the second Adam,

  823. the new

  824. and better Adam,

  825. the new representative

  826. of God's people,

  827. life,

  828. resurrection,

  829. eternal life

  830. comes to us.

  831. That's why

  832. it's a divine necessity.

  833. No one can be saved

  834. apart from Christ.

  835. I want all of you

  836. to understand this.

  837. There's no other God

  838. that can save us.

  839. There's no other man

  840. that can save us.

  841. There's no other religion

  842. that can save us.

  843. There's no other philosophy

  844. that can save us.

  845. There's no salvation

  846. apart from the name

  847. of Jesus Christ.

  848. And that's why

  849. it's so urgent

  850. to proclaim this message.

  851. That's why I say

  852. the same thing

  853. to you

  854. every week.

  855. Because there's no

  856. salvation

  857. apart

  858. from Jesus.

  859. We have to believe

  860. in him.

  861. many of you

  862. have already

  863. put your faith

  864. in Jesus Christ

  865. for which I'm

  866. so grateful.

  867. And if that's you,

  868. it's your responsibility

  869. to remember

  870. this truth

  871. always.

  872. The word

  873. remember

  874. is repeated

  875. twice

  876. in this passage.

  877. Verse 6,

  878. verse 8,

  879. it says,

  880. remember how he told you

  881. while he was still

  882. in Galilee

  883. that the son of man

  884. must be delivered

  885. into the hands

  886. of sinful men

  887. and be crucified

  888. and on the third day

  889. rise.

  890. That is the most

  891. important thing

  892. for you to remember

  893. every single day.

  894. Too often

  895. we forget

  896. this truth

  897. and remember

  898. everything else

  899. for our business

  900. as usual.

  901. But this is the one

  902. truth you must

  903. remember

  904. every day.

  905. The command

  906. remember

  907. is an important

  908. theological word

  909. throughout scripture.

  910. The verb

  911. remember

  912. occurs 222 times

  913. throughout the Old Testament.

  914. And that's just

  915. one word

  916. not counting

  917. all the other

  918. variations

  919. and synonyms

  920. of that word.

  921. And in the Bible

  922. remembering

  923. the redemptive

  924. acts of God

  925. in order

  926. that we might

  927. apply,

  928. reapply that truth

  929. and relive

  930. that truth

  931. in our lives

  932. is a central

  933. act

  934. of worship.

  935. You can't

  936. worship God

  937. rightly

  938. unless you

  939. remember him.

  940. Unless you

  941. remember who he is.

  942. Unless you

  943. remember what he

  944. has done.

  945. And that's why

  946. in Luke 22

    Luke 22:19

  947. verse 19

  948. when Jesus

  949. instituted the

  950. Lord's Supper

  951. he said

  952. this is my

  953. body

  954. which is

  955. given for you

  956. do this

  957. in remembrance

  958. of me.

  959. So do you

  960. remember

  961. the gospel

  962. daily in your

  963. lives?

  964. I guarantee

  965. if your life

  966. lacks

  967. spiritual

  968. power

  969. and life

  970. if you

  971. lack

  972. joy

  973. in your

  974. life

  975. if you

  976. find

  977. that

  978. your

  979. passion

  980. and zeal

  981. for God

  982. is lukewarm

  983. or cold

  984. I guarantee

  985. you're not

  986. remembering

  987. the gospel

  988. of Jesus

  989. Christ.

  990. there are

  991. many things

  992. that Christians

  993. can be

  994. tempted to

  995. make

  996. the center

  997. of their

  998. spiritual

  999. lives

  1000. but none

  1001. of them

  1002. can take

  1003. the place

  1004. of this

  1005. gospel.

  1006. Let me

  1007. give you

  1008. a few

  1009. examples

  1010. maybe

  1011. your

  1012. life

  1013. Christian

  1014. life

  1015. is

  1016. formalistic

  1017. you're

  1018. just going

  1019. through the

  1020. motions

  1021. and there

  1022. is no

  1023. dynamic

  1024. life

  1025. in the

  1026. Holy

  1027. Spirit

  1028. you're

  1029. bored

  1030. with

  1031. God

  1032. you're

  1033. indifferent

  1034. to his

  1035. word

  1036. you have

  1037. no hunger

  1038. for God

  1039. but then

  1040. what you

  1041. need

  1042. instead

  1043. of your

  1044. formalism

  1045. is the

  1046. gospel

  1047. to remember

  1048. that Christ

  1049. personally

  1050. died for

  1051. you

  1052. to reconcile

  1053. you to

  1054. God

  1055. that you

  1056. can have

  1057. this dynamic

  1058. relationship

  1059. with him

  1060. and be

  1061. filled

  1062. with his

  1063. living

  1064. spirit

  1065. that's

  1066. what

  1067. the

  1068. gospel

  1069. teaches

  1070. us

  1071. perhaps

  1072. your

  1073. Christian

  1074. life

  1075. is

  1076. legalistic

  1077. you're

  1078. trying

  1079. to earn

  1080. God's

  1081. favor

  1082. you're

  1083. relying

  1084. on your

  1085. own

  1086. righteousness

  1087. rather than

  1088. in the

  1089. righteousness

  1090. of Christ

  1091. when you're

  1092. diligent

  1093. in your

  1094. spiritual

  1095. pursuits

  1096. in your

  1097. daily

  1098. disciplines

  1099. and you're

  1100. succeeding

  1101. succeeding

  1102. at least

  1103. in your

  1104. mind

  1105. you become

  1106. prideful

  1107. conceited

  1108. but then

  1109. when you

  1110. sin

  1111. when you

  1112. feel like

  1113. you're

  1114. failing

  1115. you get

  1116. weighed down

  1117. with guilt

  1118. a burden

  1119. that you

  1120. cannot

  1121. bear

  1122. but what

  1123. you need

  1124. instead of

  1125. illegalism

  1126. is the

  1127. gospel

  1128. of Jesus

  1129. Christ

  1130. to remember

  1131. that there

  1132. is no

  1133. condemnation

  1134. for those

  1135. who are

  1136. in

  1137. Christ

  1138. Jesus

  1139. and that

  1140. Christ's

  1141. perfect

  1142. righteousness

  1143. is yours

  1144. through faith

  1145. in him

  1146. that's

  1147. what

  1148. humbles

  1149. you

  1150. and gives

  1151. you

  1152. love

  1153. toward

  1154. Christ

  1155. maybe

  1156. your

  1157. Christian

  1158. life

  1159. is

  1160. activistic

  1161. for sure

  1162. the gospel

  1163. transforms

  1164. us

  1165. to do

  1166. good

  1167. works

  1168. and seek

  1169. justice

  1170. Isaiah

  1171. 1 17

  1172. Micah

  1173. 6 8

  1174. but you're

  1175. so consumed

  1176. with the

  1177. evil

  1178. that is

  1179. out there

  1180. that you've

  1181. lost sight

  1182. of the

  1183. evil

  1184. within

  1185. you

  1186. so your

  1187. activism

  1188. has become

  1189. self-righteous

  1190. and strident

  1191. you've

  1192. forgotten

  1193. the sweet

  1194. grace of

  1195. God

  1196. and your

  1197. own

  1198. need

  1199. for

  1200. forgiveness

  1201. you've

  1202. become

  1203. so

  1204. focused

  1205. on

  1206. saving

  1207. this

  1208. world

  1209. that

  1210. you've

  1211. forgotten

  1212. that

  1213. God

  1214. so

  1215. loved

  1216. the

  1217. world

  1218. he

  1219. sent

  1220. his

  1221. only

  1222. son

  1223. already

  1224. to

  1225. save

  1226. it

  1227. but

  1228. what

  1229. you

  1230. need

  1231. instead

  1232. of

  1233. your

  1234. activism

  1235. is

  1236. the

  1237. gospel

  1238. of

  1239. Jesus

  1240. Christ

  1241. to

  1242. remember

  1243. that

  1244. you

  1245. yourself

  1246. is a

  1247. sinner

  1248. saved

  1249. by

  1250. the

  1251. grace

  1252. of

  1253. God

  1254. and

  1255. that

  1256. the

  1257. ultimate

  1258. hope

  1259. of

  1260. salvation

  1261. is

  1262. not

  1263. you

  1264. but

  1265. Jesus

  1266. perhaps

  1267. your

  1268. Christian

  1269. life

  1270. is

  1271. scholastic

  1272. you're

  1273. puffed up

  1274. with

  1275. knowledge

  1276. you can

  1277. wax

  1278. eloquent

  1279. on

  1280. Christology

  1281. the

  1282. theology

  1283. of

  1284. the

  1285. son

  1286. of

  1287. God

  1288. but

  1289. you

  1290. do

  1291. not

  1292. have

  1293. the

  1294. humility

  1295. of

  1296. Christ

  1297. you

  1298. can

  1299. debate

  1300. the

  1301. nuances

  1302. of

  1303. pneumatology

  1304. the

  1305. doctrine

  1306. of

  1307. the

  1308. Holy

  1309. Spirit

  1310. but

  1311. you

  1312. are

  1313. not

  1314. yourself

  1315. filled

  1316. with

  1317. the

  1318. Holy

  1319. Spirit

  1320. you

  1321. do

  1322. not

  1323. display

  1324. the

  1325. fruit

  1326. of

  1327. the

  1328. spirit

  1329. in

  1330. your

  1331. life

  1332. you

  1333. get

  1334. a

  1335. rise

  1336. out

  1337. of

  1338. nitpicking

  1339. books

  1340. and

  1341. articles

  1342. and

  1343. sermons

  1344. and

  1345. you're

  1346. intolerant

  1347. and

  1348. pridefully

  1349. critical

  1350. of

  1351. anyone

  1352. who

  1353. does

  1354. not

  1355. share

  1356. your

  1357. level

  1358. of

  1359. theological

  1360. precision

  1361. you

  1362. have

  1363. mastered

  1364. the

  1365. word

  1366. of

  1367. God

  1368. but

  1369. you

  1370. have

  1371. not

  1372. been

  1373. mastered

  1374. by

  1375. the

  1376. word

  1377. of

  1378. God

  1379. and

  1380. what

  1381. you

  1382. need

  1383. instead

  1384. of

  1385. your

  1386. scholasticism

  1387. is

  1388. the

  1389. gospel

  1390. to

  1391. remember

  1392. that

  1393. Christ

  1394. didn't

  1395. come

  1396. so

  1397. that

  1398. you

  1399. might

  1400. theorize

  1401. about

  1402. him

  1403. but

  1404. so

  1405. that

  1406. you

  1407. might

  1408. know

  1409. him

  1410. personally

  1411. and

  1412. experientially

  1413. so

  1414. that

  1415. you

  1416. might

  1417. be

  1418. humbled

  1419. by

  1420. the

  1421. grand

  1422. realities

  1423. of

  1424. the

  1425. gospel

  1426. and

  1427. be

  1428. built

  1429. up

  1430. in

  1431. love

  1432. that's

  1433. why

  1434. maybe

  1435. your

  1436. life

  1437. is

  1438. more

  1439. mystical

  1440. or

  1441. emotional

  1442. istic

  1443. and

  1444. for

  1445. sure

  1446. the

  1447. gospel

  1448. affects

  1449. our

  1450. emotions

  1451. as

  1452. well

  1453. if

  1454. our

  1455. emotions

  1456. are

  1457. not

  1458. affected

  1459. something

  1460. is

  1461. awry

  1462. but

  1463. you

  1464. go

  1465. beyond

  1466. that

  1467. your

  1468. faith

  1469. rests

  1470. unduly

  1471. on

  1472. the

  1473. highs

  1474. and

  1475. lows

  1476. of

  1477. your

  1478. emotions

  1479. so

  1480. you're

  1481. unstable

  1482. and

  1483. your

  1484. pursuit

  1485. of

  1486. God

  1487. is

  1488. unsustainable

  1489. going

  1490. from

  1491. one

  1492. emotional

  1493. high

  1494. to

  1495. the

  1496. next

  1497. without

  1498. any

  1499. enduring

  1500. steadfast

  1501. devotion

  1502. and

  1503. service

  1504. to

  1505. God

  1506. but

  1507. instead

  1508. what

  1509. you

  1510. need

  1511. is

  1512. the

  1513. gospel

  1514. to

  1515. remember

  1516. that

  1517. though

  1518. your

  1519. subjective

  1520. feelings

  1521. might

  1522. change

  1523. the

  1524. objective

  1525. reality

  1526. of what

  1527. Christ

  1528. has

  1529. done

  1530. for

  1531. you

  1532. never

  1533. changes

  1534. no matter

  1535. how bad

  1536. of a

  1537. day

  1538. you're

  1539. having

  1540. it's

  1541. by

  1542. remembering

  1543. that

  1544. that

  1545. you

  1546. grow

  1547. perhaps

  1548. one last

  1549. example

  1550. your

  1551. Christian

  1552. life

  1553. is

  1554. anthropocentric

  1555. man

  1556. centered

  1557. it's

  1558. all

  1559. about

  1560. you

  1561. fulfilling

  1562. your

  1563. life

  1564. meeting

  1565. your

  1566. perceived

  1567. needs

  1568. self

  1569. actualization

  1570. you see

  1571. Christ

  1572. as a

  1573. therapist

  1574. and not

  1575. as a

  1576. savior

  1577. you act

  1578. as if

  1579. God

  1580. exists

  1581. to make

  1582. you feel

  1583. better

  1584. about

  1585. yourself

  1586. but

  1587. instead

  1588. what

  1589. you need

  1590. is the

  1591. gospel

  1592. of

  1593. Jesus

  1594. Christ

  1595. to

  1596. remember

  1597. that

  1598. the

  1599. death

  1600. and

  1601. resurrection

  1602. of

  1603. Christ

  1604. is a

  1605. demonstration

  1606. not only

  1607. of his

  1608. love

  1609. for you

  1610. but also

  1611. of his

  1612. holiness

  1613. and justice

  1614. and how

  1615. unworthy

  1616. and sinful

  1617. you are

  1618. to receive

  1619. it

  1620. the gospel

  1621. exalts

  1622. the glory

  1623. of God's

  1624. grace

  1625. not your

  1626. deservingness

  1627. none of

  1628. these other

  1629. ways that I

  1630. mentioned

  1631. consists

  1632. of remembering

  1633. the crucified

  1634. and risen

  1635. Christ

  1636. but for

  1637. you

  1638. the way

  1639. you live

  1640. must be

  1641. different

  1642. you must

  1643. remember

  1644. the gospel

  1645. because that's

  1646. how we grow

  1647. and persevere

  1648. as Christians

  1649. Colossians 1

  1650. 21 to 23

  1651. puts it this

  1652. way

  1653. and you

  1654. who once

  1655. were alienated

  1656. in a hostile

  1657. in mind

  1658. doing evil

  1659. deeds

  1660. Christ

  1661. has now

  1662. reconciled

  1663. in his

  1664. body of

  1665. flesh

  1666. by his

  1667. death

  1668. in order

  1669. to present

  1670. you holy

  1671. and blameless

  1672. and above

  1673. reproach

  1674. before him

  1675. if indeed

  1676. you continue

  1677. in the faith

  1678. stable and

  1679. steadfast

  1680. not shifting

  1681. from the hope

  1682. of the gospel

  1683. that you

  1684. heard

  1685. it is

  1686. not shifting

  1687. from the hope

  1688. of the gospel

  1689. that you

  1690. have already

  1691. heard

  1692. that's how

  1693. you persevere

  1694. that's how

  1695. you become

  1696. presented to

  1697. God holy

  1698. and blameless

  1699. and above

  1700. reproach

  1701. so is the

  1702. gospel

  1703. functionally

  1704. your hope

  1705. before God

  1706. or has the

  1707. gospel become

  1708. unessential

  1709. and irrelevant

  1710. to your

  1711. Christian life

  1712. and also

  1713. those who

  1714. remember

  1715. the word

  1716. of Christ

  1717. must retell

  1718. the word

  1719. of Christ

  1720. there is a

  1721. transmission

  1722. of testimony

  1723. here

  1724. from the

  1725. angels

  1726. first

  1727. reminding

  1728. the woman

  1729. of what

  1730. Jesus

  1731. had told

  1732. them

  1733. in verses

  1734. five to

  1735. eight

  1736. and from

  1737. the woman

  1738. to the

  1739. apostles

  1740. and the

  1741. disciples

  1742. in verse

  1743. nine

  1744. and then

  1745. it says

  1746. in verse

  1747. nine

  1748. that they

  1749. told all

  1750. these things

  1751. to the

  1752. eleven

  1753. which is

  1754. no longer

  1755. twelve

  1756. but eleven

  1757. because Judas

  1758. the betrayer

  1759. is gone

  1760. and to all

  1761. the rest

  1762. and then

  1763. later in

  1764. verse 14

  1765. we see

  1766. two of

  1767. the disciples

  1768. talking with

  1769. each other

  1770. about all

  1771. these things

  1772. that had

  1773. happened

  1774. so there's

  1775. ongoing

  1776. transmission

  1777. of the

  1778. good news

  1779. of Jesus

  1780. Christ's

  1781. death and

  1782. resurrection

  1783. throughout

  1784. chapter 24

  1785. because Christians

  1786. are witnesses

  1787. of Jesus

  1788. Christ

  1789. we bear

  1790. witness

  1791. to his

  1792. death

  1793. and resurrection

  1794. that's why

  1795. we're here

  1796. transmission

  1797. is essential

  1798. because unless

  1799. the witnesses

  1800. retell the

  1801. good news

  1802. of Jesus

  1803. no one

  1804. will hear

  1805. and believe

  1806. it

  1807. notice

  1808. notice

  1809. how

  1810. Luke

  1811. emphasizes

  1812. this

  1813. it's

  1814. not

  1815. when

  1816. the

  1817. woman

  1818. see

  1819. the

  1820. empty

  1821. tomb

  1822. that

  1823. they

  1824. believe

  1825. did you

  1826. guys

  1827. see

  1828. that

  1829. sometimes

  1830. we

  1831. think

  1832. oh man

  1833. if only

  1834. I had

  1835. a chance

  1836. to see

  1837. the

  1838. empty

  1839. tomb

  1840. with my

  1841. own

  1842. two

  1843. eyes

  1844. and I

  1845. would

  1846. believe

  1847. in the

  1848. resurrection

  1849. no

  1850. they

  1851. don't

  1852. believe

  1853. it

  1854. after

  1855. they

  1856. see

  1857. the

  1858. empty

  1859. tomb

  1860. they

  1861. believe

  1862. it

  1863. after

  1864. they

  1865. hear

  1866. the

  1867. good

  1868. news

  1869. and

  1870. this

  1871. is

  1872. consistent

  1873. with

  1874. Luke's

  1875. emphasis

  1876. Luke

  1877. 11

  1878. 29

  1879. 32

  1880. where

  1881. Jesus

  1882. said

  1883. no

  1884. sign

  1885. will

  1886. be

  1887. given

  1888. except

  1889. the

  1890. sign

  1891. of

  1892. Jonah

  1893. in

  1894. that

  1895. context

  1896. he's

  1897. referring

  1898. to

  1899. the

  1900. preaching

  1901. of

  1902. Jonah

  1903. which

  1904. became

  1905. a

  1906. sign

  1907. to

  1908. the

  1909. people

  1910. of

  1911. Nineveh

  1912. so

  1913. likewise

  1914. it's

  1915. the

  1916. preaching

  1917. the

  1918. proclamation

  1919. of the

  1920. gospel

  1921. that's

  1922. the

  1923. sign

  1924. by

  1925. which

  1926. all

  1927. of

  1928. us

  1929. ought

  1930. to

  1931. believe

  1932. and

  1933. that's

  1934. why

  1935. Romans

  1936. 10

  1937. 14

  1938. to

  1939. 17

  1940. says

  1941. this

  1942. how

  1943. then

  1944. will

  1945. they

  1946. call

  1947. on

  1948. him

  1949. in

  1950. whom

  1951. they

  1952. have

  1953. not

  1954. believed

  1955. and

  1956. how

  1957. are

  1958. they

  1959. to

  1960. believe

  1961. in

  1962. him

  1963. of

  1964. whom

  1965. they

  1966. have

  1967. never

  1968. heard

  1969. and

  1970. how

  1971. are

  1972. they

  1973. to

  1974. hear

  1975. without

  1976. someone

  1977. preaching

  1978. and

  1979. how

  1980. are

  1981. they

  1982. to

  1983. preach

  1984. unless

  1985. they

  1986. are

  1987. sent

  1988. so

  1989. faith

  1990. comes

  1991. from

  1992. hearing

  1993. and

  1994. hearing

  1995. through

  1996. the

  1997. word

  1998. of

  1999. Christ

  2000. saving

  2001. faith

  2002. comes

  2003. by

  2004. hearing

  2005. the

  2006. word

  2007. of

  2008. Christ

  2009. that

  2010. means

  2011. brothers

  2012. and

  2013. sisters

  2014. we

  2015. must

  2016. tell

  2017. the

  2018. gospel

  2019. of

  2020. Jesus

  2021. Christ

  2022. if

  2023. you

  2024. don't

  2025. tell

  2026. it

  2027. people

  2028. will

  2029. not

  2030. hear

  2031. it

  2032. that

  2033. means

  2034. they

  2035. won't

  2036. believe

  2037. it

  2038. it's

  2039. really

  2040. as

  2041. simple

  2042. as

  2043. that

  2044. if

  2045. you

  2046. don't

  2047. tell

  2048. your

  2049. neighbors

  2050. your

  2051. neighbors

  2052. will

  2053. not

  2054. hear

  2055. and

  2056. believe

  2057. and

  2058. for

  2059. those

  2060. who

  2061. hear

  2062. the

  2063. word

  2064. of

  2065. Christ

  2066. of

  2067. course

  2068. there

  2069. is

  2070. a

  2071. responsibility

  2072. to

  2073. believe

  2074. it

  2075. and

  2076. some

  2077. of

  2078. you

  2079. are

  2080. here

  2081. not

  2082. yet

  2083. followers

  2084. of

  2085. Christ

  2086. and

  2087. I

  2088. want

  2089. to

  2090. exhort

  2091. you

  2092. in

  2093. particular

  2094. with

  2095. the

  2096. second

  2097. point

  2098. leaving

  2099. the

  2100. word

  2101. of

  2102. Christ

  2103. it

  2104. says

  2105. in

  2106. verses

  2107. 10

  2108. to

  2109. 11

  2110. now

  2111. it

  2112. was

  2113. Mary

  2114. Magdalene

  2115. and

  2116. Joanna

  2117. and

  2118. Mary

  2119. the

  2120. mother

  2121. of

  2122. James

  2123. and

  2124. the

  2125. other

  2126. woman

  2127. with

  2128. them

  2129. who

  2130. told

  2131. these

  2132. things

  2133. to

  2134. the

  2135. apostles

  2136. but

  2137. these

  2138. words

  2139. seemed

  2140. to

  2141. them

  2142. Mary

  2143. Magdalene

  2144. and

  2145. Joanna

  2146. who

  2147. were

  2148. already

  2149. mentioned

  2150. in

  2151. chapter

  2152. 8

  2153. and

  2154. Mary

  2155. the

  2156. mother

  2157. of

  2158. James

  2159. this

  2160. is

  2161. a

  2162. reference

  2163. to

  2164. Mary

  2165. the

  2166. mother

  2167. of

  2168. James

  2169. the

  2170. younger

  2171. as

  2172. Mark

  2173. 15

  2174. 40

  2175. puts

  2176. it

  2177. this

  2178. designation

  2179. distinguishes

  2180. James

  2181. James

  2182. the

  2183. younger

  2184. who

  2185. is

  2186. the

  2187. son

  2188. of

  2189. Mary

  2190. and

  2191. Clopas

  2192. from

  2193. the

  2194. James

  2195. that

  2196. we're

  2197. probably

  2198. more

  2199. familiar

  2200. with

  2201. the

  2202. James

  2203. the

  2204. other

  2205. James

  2206. apostle

  2207. James

  2208. who

  2209. is

  2210. the

  2211. son

  2212. of

  2213. Zebedee

  2214. and

  2215. Salome

  2216. so

  2217. then

  2218. Mary

  2219. is

  2220. the

  2221. mother

  2222. of

  2223. James

  2224. the

  2225. younger

  2226. who

  2227. is

  2228. the

  2229. near

  2230. kin

  2231. of

  2232. Jesus

  2233. and

  2234. therefore

  2235. sometimes

  2236. described

  2237. as

  2238. the

  2239. Lord's

  2240. brother

  2241. he's

  2242. the

  2243. author

  2244. of

  2245. the

  2246. book

  2247. of

  2248. James

  2249. so

  2250. these

  2251. women

  2252. are

  2253. women

  2254. of

  2255. stature

  2256. they

  2257. are

  2258. godly

  2259. women

  2260. they

  2261. are

  2262. credible

  2263. women

  2264. they

  2265. were

  2266. commended

  2267. in

  2268. 8

  2269. verses

  2270. 2

  2271. to

  2272. 3

  2273. for

  2274. their

  2275. devotion

  2276. to

  2277. the

  2278. Lord

  2279. and

  2280. his

  2281. apostles

  2282. they

  2283. provided

  2284. for

  2285. them

  2286. out

  2287. of

  2288. their

  2289. own

  2290. means

  2291. and

  2292. the

  2293. fact

  2294. that

  2295. all

  2296. of

  2297. the

  2298. gospel

  2299. accounts

  2300. record

  2301. that

  2302. the

  2303. first

  2304. report

  2305. of

  2306. the

  2307. resurrection

  2308. was

  2309. by

  2310. woman

  2311. is

  2312. remarkable

  2313. considering

  2314. the

  2315. status

  2316. of

  2317. woman

  2318. in

  2319. the

  2320. ancient

  2321. world

  2322. to

  2323. Jewish

  2324. historian

  2325. Josephus

  2326. writes

  2327. in

  2328. one

  2329. of

  2330. his

  2331. books

  2332. against

  2333. Apion

  2334. but

  2335. let

  2336. not

  2337. the

  2338. testimony

  2339. of

  2340. woman

  2341. be

  2342. admitted

  2343. on

  2344. account

  2345. of

  2346. the

  2347. levity

  2348. and

  2349. boldness

  2350. of

  2351. their

  2352. sex

  2353. since

  2354. it

  2355. is

  2356. probable

  2357. that

  2358. they

  2359. may

  2360. not

  2361. speak

  2362. truth

  2363. either

  2364. out

  2365. of

  2366. hope

  2367. of

  2368. gain

  2369. or

  2370. fear

  2371. of

  2372. punishment

  2373. similarly

  2374. the

  2375. Talmud

  2376. which is

  2377. a

  2378. compilation

  2379. of

  2380. Jewish

  2381. rabbinical

  2382. oral

  2383. teachings

  2384. and

  2385. commentary

  2386. on

  2387. that

  2388. it

  2389. stipulates

  2390. that

  2391. woman

  2392. may

  2393. not

  2394. in fact

  2395. second

  2396. century

  2397. Greek

  2398. philosopher

  2399. Kelsus

  2400. who

  2401. made

  2402. a

  2403. career

  2404. out

  2405. of

  2406. mocking

  2407. Christians

  2408. and

  2409. persecuting

  2410. Christians

  2411. made

  2412. this

  2413. precise

  2414. point

  2415. arguing

  2416. that

  2417. Christian

  2418. doctrine

  2419. of

  2420. the

  2421. resurrection

  2422. was

  2423. based

  2424. on

  2425. the

  2426. testimony

  2427. of

  2428. half

  2429. frantic

  2430. self

  2431. deceived

  2432. woman

  2433. so

  2434. it

  2435. would

  2436. have

  2437. been

  2438. a

  2439. point

  2440. of

  2441. embarrassment

  2442. in

  2443. the

  2444. ancient

  2445. world

  2446. that

  2447. the

  2448. first

  2449. witnesses

  2450. of

  2451. Christ

  2452. resurrection

  2453. were

  2454. women

  2455. but

  2456. none

  2457. of

  2458. the

  2459. gospel

  2460. writers

  2461. try

  2462. to

  2463. hide

  2464. or

  2465. minimize

  2466. this

  2467. fact

  2468. and

  2469. I

  2470. think

  2471. this

  2472. is

  2473. evidence

  2474. of

  2475. the

  2476. authenticity

  2477. of

  2478. the

  2479. resurrection

  2480. accounts

  2481. and

  2482. of

  2483. the

  2484. integrity

  2485. of

  2486. the

  2487. authors

  2488. who

  2489. are

  2490. writing

  2491. it

  2492. and

  2493. it

  2494. also

  2495. shows

  2496. that

  2497. in

  2498. Christ's

  2499. economy

  2500. in

  2501. the

  2502. divine

  2503. economy

  2504. both

  2505. men

  2506. and

  2507. women

  2508. are

  2509. called

  2510. to

  2511. be

  2512. children

  2513. of

  2514. God

  2515. and

  2516. witnesses

  2517. of

  2518. Jesus

  2519. Christ

  2520. to

  2521. share

  2522. the

  2523. good

  2524. news

  2525. of

  2526. Jesus

  2527. with

  2528. their

  2529. neighbors

  2530. and

  2531. with

  2532. the

  2533. world

  2534. but

  2535. unfortunately

  2536. verse 11

  2537. says that

  2538. these words

  2539. of the

  2540. woman

  2541. seemed

  2542. to

  2543. them

  2544. the

  2545. apostles

  2546. and the

  2547. other

  2548. disciples

  2549. an

  2550. idle

  2551. tale

  2552. man

  2553. I'm

  2554. thinking

  2555. about

  2556. apostle

  2557. James

  2558. at

  2559. least

  2560. he

  2561. should

  2562. have

  2563. listened

  2564. to

  2565. his

  2566. mother

  2567. they

  2568. did

  2569. not

  2570. believe

  2571. them

  2572. the

  2573. word

  2574. translated

  2575. idle

  2576. tale

  2577. is a

  2578. Greek

  2579. word

  2580. that

  2581. usually

  2582. describes

  2583. a

  2584. delirious

  2585. talk

  2586. of

  2587. really

  2588. sick

  2589. people

  2590. almost

  2591. a

  2592. hallucination

  2593. a

  2594. delusion

  2595. delirium

  2596. nonsense

  2597. and

  2598. this

  2599. should

  2600. correct

  2601. any

  2602. mistaken

  2603. assumption

  2604. that

  2605. modern

  2606. people

  2607. might

  2608. have

  2609. that

  2610. people

  2611. in

  2612. the

  2613. ancient

  2614. world

  2615. believe

  2616. in

  2617. things

  2618. like

  2619. the

  2620. resurrection

  2621. only

  2622. because

  2623. they

  2624. were

  2625. more

  2626. gullible

  2627. and

  2628. prone

  2629. to

  2630. believe

  2631. in

  2632. fantastical

  2633. stories

  2634. no

  2635. that's

  2636. not

  2637. the

  2638. case

  2639. in

  2640. what

  2641. age

  2642. of

  2643. human

  2644. history

  2645. was

  2646. resurrection

  2647. ever

  2648. a

  2649. normal

  2650. day

  2651. to

  2652. day

  2653. thing

  2654. it

  2655. was

  2656. hard

  2657. for

  2658. them

  2659. to

  2660. believe

  2661. just

  2662. as

  2663. it's

  2664. difficult

  2665. for

  2666. many

  2667. people

  2668. today

  2669. but

  2670. we

  2671. must

  2672. believe

  2673. and

  2674. this

  2675. passage

  2676. contrasts

  2677. the

  2678. faith

  2679. of

  2680. the

  2681. woman

  2682. with

  2683. the

  2684. unbelief

  2685. of

  2686. the

  2687. apostles

  2688. and

  2689. exhorts

  2690. us

  2691. to

  2692. believe

  2693. the

  2694. good

  2695. news

  2696. that

  2697. Jesus

  2698. Christ

  2699. was

  2700. delivered

  2701. crucified

  2702. and

  2703. raised

  2704. to

  2705. give

  2706. us

  2707. life

  2708. and

  2709. this

  2710. resurrection

  2711. is an

  2712. essential

  2713. element

  2714. of our

  2715. faith

  2716. apart from

  2717. Jesus'

  2718. resurrection

  2719. there is

  2720. no

  2721. salvation

  2722. for

  2723. sinners

  2724. and

  2725. and

  2726. that's

  2727. and

  2728. and

  2729. and

  2730. if

  2731. Christ

  2732. has

  2733. not

  2734. been

  2735. raised

  2736. then

  2737. our

  2738. preaching

  2739. is

  2740. in

  2741. vain

  2742. and

  2743. your

  2744. faith

  2745. is

  2746. in

  2747. vain

  2748. and

  2749. if

  2750. Christ

  2751. has

  2752. not

  2753. been

  2754. raised

  2755. your

  2756. faith

  2757. is

  2758. futile

  2759. and

  2760. you

  2761. are

  2762. still

  2763. in

  2764. your

  2765. sins

  2766. if

  2767. Christ

  2768. has

  2769. not

  2770. been

  2771. raised

  2772. if

  2773. he

  2774. just

  2775. died

  2776. that

  2777. his

  2778. death

  2779. his

  2780. atoning

  2781. death

  2782. would

  2783. not

  2784. be

  2785. effective

  2786. we

  2787. would

  2788. still

  2789. be

  2790. in

  2791. our

  2792. sins

  2793. so

  2794. it's

  2795. a

  2796. mistake

  2797. to

  2798. think

  2799. that

  2800. Christ

  2801. death

  2802. alone

  2803. is

  2804. sufficient

  2805. for

  2806. our

  2807. redemption

  2808. it's

  2809. not

  2810. as

  2811. Romans

  2812. 425

  2813. says

  2814. Christ

  2815. was

  2816. delivered

  2817. up

  2818. for

  2819. our

  2820. trespasses

  2821. and

  2822. raised

  2823. for

  2824. our

  2825. justification

  2826. Romans

  2827. 510

  2828. adds

  2829. if

  2830. while

  2831. we

  2832. were

  2833. enemies

  2834. we

  2835. were

  2836. reconciled

  2837. to

  2838. God

  2839. by

  2840. the

  2841. death

  2842. of

  2843. his

  2844. son

  2845. much

  2846. more

  2847. now

  2848. that

  2849. we

  2850. are

  2851. reconciled

  2852. shall

  2853. we

  2854. be

  2855. saved

  2856. by

  2857. punishment

  2858. we

  2859. are

  2860. reconciled

  2861. to

  2862. God

  2863. but

  2864. we

  2865. are

  2866. not

  2867. saved

  2868. in

  2869. full

  2870. until

  2871. his

  2872. resurrection

  2873. life

  2874. the

  2875. death

  2876. of

  2877. Christ

  2878. and

  2879. the

  2880. resurrection

  2881. of

  2882. Christ

  2883. are

  2884. inseparable

  2885. if

  2886. Christ

  2887. had

  2888. died

  2889. and

  2890. he

  2891. was

  2892. not

  2893. raised

  2894. it

  2895. would

  2896. mean

  2897. that

  2898. he

  2899. was

  2900. swallowed

  2901. up

  2902. by

  2903. death

  2904. it

  2905. would

  2906. mean

  2907. that

  2908. his

  2909. sacrifice

  2910. was

  2911. not

  2912. accepted

  2913. it

  2914. would

  2915. mean

  2916. that

  2917. he

  2918. was

  2919. overwhelmed

  2920. by

  2921. the

  2922. weight

  2923. of

  2924. sin

  2925. it

  2926. would

  2927. mean

  2928. that

  2929. darkness

  2930. a

  2931. dead

  2932. savior

  2933. cannot

  2934. give

  2935. life

  2936. to

  2937. anyone

  2938. and

  2939. it's

  2940. because

  2941. Christ

  2942. conquered

  2943. death

  2944. and

  2945. that

  2946. Luke

  2947. calls

  2948. him

  2949. this

  2950. is

  2951. amazing

  2952. the

  2953. Lord

  2954. Jesus

  2955. he

  2956. says

  2957. in

  2958. verse

  2959. three

  2960. when

  2961. they

  2962. went

  2963. in

  2964. they

  2965. did

  2966. not

  2967. find

  2968. the

  2969. body

  2970. of

  2971. the

  2972. Lord

  2973. Jesus

  2974. Jesus

  2975. has

  2976. been

  2977. called

  2978. Lord

  2979. before

  2980. but

  2981. it's

  2982. always

  2983. a little

  2984. ambiguous

  2985. because

  2986. that's

  2987. the same

  2988. word

  2989. that can

  2990. just

  2991. be used

  2992. to

  2993. generically

  2994. mean

  2995. sir

  2996. even

  2997. though

  2998. I

  2999. do

  3000. think

  3001. Luke

  3002. intends

  3003. it

  3004. with

  3005. more

  3006. theological

  3007. weight

  3008. often

  3009. throughout

  3010. the

  3011. gospel

  3012. and

  3013. of

  3014. course

  3015. the

  3016. name

  3017. Jesus

  3018. we've

  3019. seen

  3020. many

  3021. times

  3022. before

  3023. as

  3024. well

  3025. but

  3026. this

  3027. is

  3028. the

  3029. only

  3030. time

  3031. Luke

  3032. uses

  3033. this

  3034. title

  3035. it

  3036. combines

  3037. the

  3038. name

  3039. of

  3040. Jesus

  3041. with

  3042. the

  3043. word

  3044. Lord

  3045. to

  3046. form

  3047. this

  3048. exalted

  3049. title

  3050. the

  3051. Lord

  3052. Jesus

  3053. this

  3054. is

  3055. the

  3056. only

  3057. time

  3058. he

  3059. uses

  3060. that

  3061. but

  3062. then

  3063. in

  3064. his

  3065. sequel

  3066. the

  3067. book

  3068. of

  3069. Christ

  3070. ascension

  3071. Jesus

  3072. is

  3073. called

  3074. the

  3075. Lord

  3076. Jesus

  3077. 18

  3078. times

  3079. it's

  3080. only

  3081. after

  3082. his

  3083. resurrection

  3084. that we

  3085. see

  3086. Jesus

  3087. as

  3088. the

  3089. exalted

  3090. Lord

  3091. that we

  3092. saw

  3093. only a

  3094. glimpse

  3095. of

  3096. during

  3097. his

  3098. transfiguration

  3099. he

  3100. is

  3101. now

  3102. the

  3103. Lord

  3104. Jesus

  3105. who

  3106. demands

  3107. our

  3108. submission

  3109. he's

  3110. the

  3111. Lord

  3112. Jesus

  3113. who

  3114. is

  3115. worthy

  3116. of

  3117. our

  3118. worship

  3119. he's

  3120. the

  3121. Lord

  3122. Jesus

  3123. who

  3124. rules

  3125. over

  3126. all

  3127. creation

  3128. yes

  3129. he was

  3130. treated

  3131. like the

  3132. scum

  3133. of the

  3134. earth

  3135. when he

  3136. was

  3137. alive

  3138. before

  3139. his

  3140. crucifixion

  3141. he was

  3142. treated

  3143. like a

  3144. criminal

  3145. he was

  3146. treated

  3147. like

  3148. rubbish

  3149. but

  3150. now

  3151. he's

  3152. the

  3153. Lord

  3154. Jesus

  3155. before

  3156. whom

  3157. every

  3158. knee

  3159. must

  3160. bow

  3161. and

  3162. every

  3163. tongue

  3164. confess

  3165. he

  3166. is

  3167. Lord

  3168. that's

  3169. the

  3170. God

  3171. we

  3172. serve

  3173. and

  3174. he

  3175. was

  3176. raised

  3177. bodily

  3178. there's

  3179. some

  3180. people

  3181. who

  3182. claim

  3183. to be

  3184. Christian

  3185. but

  3186. then

  3187. say

  3188. that

  3189. Jesus

  3190. resurrection

  3191. is

  3192. metaphorical

  3193. or

  3194. mystical

  3195. that

  3196. though

  3197. he

  3198. is

  3199. physically

  3200. dead

  3201. that

  3202. his

  3203. spirit

  3204. lives

  3205. among

  3206. us

  3207. or

  3208. that

  3209. though

  3210. he

  3211. is

  3212. dead

  3213. his

  3214. memory

  3215. lives

  3216. forever

  3217. but

  3218. that's

  3219. patronizing

  3220. nonsense

  3221. it

  3222. doesn't

  3223. even

  3224. take

  3225. seriously

  3226. the

  3227. actual

  3228. gospel

  3229. accounts

  3230. of

  3231. the

  3232. resurrection

  3233. there

  3234. was

  3235. no

  3236. body

  3237. there

  3238. it

  3239. was

  3240. an

  3241. empty

  3242. tomb

  3243. which

  3244. means

  3245. Jesus

  3246. was

  3247. raised

  3248. bodily

  3249. if

  3250. Christ

  3251. was

  3252. not

  3253. raised

  3254. bodily

  3255. that

  3256. means

  3257. death

  3258. still

  3259. has

  3260. not

  3261. been

  3262. defeated

  3263. the

  3264. effects

  3265. of

  3266. sin

  3267. has

  3268. not

  3269. been

  3270. reversed

  3271. if

  3272. Christ

  3273. bodily

  3274. resurrection

  3275. that

  3276. it's

  3277. his

  3278. bodily

  3279. resurrection

  3280. that's

  3281. the

  3282. basis

  3283. for

  3284. our

  3285. hope

  3286. that

  3287. in

  3288. the

  3289. future

  3290. we

  3291. would

  3292. have

  3293. resurrected

  3294. bodies

  3295. and

  3296. that's

  3297. really

  3298. what

  3299. baptism

  3300. represents

  3301. which

  3302. we have

  3303. the privilege

  3304. of doing

  3305. this

  3306. morning

  3307. baptism

  3308. in

  3309. water

  3310. which

  3311. is

  3312. the

  3313. initial

  3314. right

  3315. of

  3316. becoming

  3317. a

  3318. Christian

  3319. it

  3320. signifies

  3321. our

  3322. union

  3323. with

  3324. Jesus

  3325. in

  3326. his

  3327. death

  3328. and

  3329. resurrection

  3330. our

  3331. submersion

  3332. in

  3333. water

  3334. signifies

  3335. our

  3336. death

  3337. our

  3338. death

  3339. to

  3340. sin

  3341. our

  3342. death

  3343. to

  3344. our

  3345. former

  3346. life

  3347. our

  3348. death

  3349. to our

  3350. independence

  3351. and

  3352. sovereignty

  3353. and we

  3354. rise from

  3355. that

  3356. with new

  3357. life

  3358. in

  3359. Christ

  3360. we go

  3361. down

  3362. into the

  3363. water

  3364. with the

  3365. squalor

  3366. of our

  3367. sin

  3368. we emerge

  3369. washed

  3370. by the

  3371. blood

  3372. of

  3373. Christ

  3374. that's

  3375. what

  3376. baptism

  3377. signifies

  3378. and the

  3379. people who

  3380. are getting

  3381. baptized

  3382. today

  3383. have put

  3384. their

  3385. faith

  3386. in

  3387. Jesus

  3388. that he

  3389. died

  3390. for them

  3391. and

  3392. they're

  3393. saying

  3394. that

  3395. I

  3396. will

  3397. I

  3398. will

  3399. live

  3400. for

  3401. no

  3402. one

  3403. else

  3404. but

  3405. the

  3406. Lord

  3407. Jesus

  3408. I

  3409. will

  3410. serve

  3411. no

  3412. other

  3413. master

  3414. but

  3415. the

  3416. Lord

  3417. Jesus

  3418. that's

  3419. what

  3420. that

  3421. means

  3422. and

  3423. if you

  3424. have not

  3425. yet put

  3426. your faith

  3427. in Jesus

  3428. I urge

  3429. you this

  3430. morning

  3431. to do

  3432. that

  3433. that

  3434. you
