  1. Let me pray for the reading and preaching of God's word this morning.

  2. Heavenly Father,

  3. before the reading and preaching of your word,

  4. we pray to seek your help

  5. because we know our desperate situation.

  6. Because we know that

  7. we are powerless on our own

  8. to grasp eternal truth,

  9. to come to faith in them.

  10. Because we know that no matter how hard I preach,

  11. no matter how well prepared I am,

  12. apart from the work of your powerful Holy Spirit,

  13. not a single person will be saved.

  14. And so we ask

  15. that you

  16. speak to us this morning,

  17. address us,

  18. carry forth your word

  19. by the breath of your spirit

  20. so that we might hear

  21. and so that we might believe

  22. to your glory.

  23. In Jesus' name we pray.

  24. Amen.

  25. Amen.

  26. Luke 24,

    Luke 24:13–32

  27. verses 13 to 32.

  28. That very day,

  29. two of them were going to a village named Emmaus,

  30. about seven miles from Jerusalem.

  31. And they were talking with each other

  32. about all these things that had happened.

  33. While they were talking and discussing together,

  34. Jesus himself drew near and went with them.

  35. But their eyes were kept from recognizing him.

  36. And he said to them,

  37. what is this conversation

  38. that you are holding with each other as you walk?

  39. And they stood still,

  40. looking sad.

  41. Then one of them,

  42. named Cleopas,

  43. answered him,

  44. are you the only visitor to Jerusalem

  45. who does not know the things

  46. that have happened there in these days?

  47. And he said to them,

  48. what things?

  49. And they said to him,

  50. concerning Jesus of Nazareth,

  51. a man who was a prophet,

  52. mighty indeed,

  53. and word before God and all the people.

  54. And how our chief priests and rulers

  55. delivered him up to be condemned to death

  56. and crucified him.

  57. But we had hoped

  58. that he was the one to redeem Israel.

  59. Yes.

  60. And besides all this,

  61. it is now the third day

  62. since these things happened.

  63. Moreover,

  64. some women of our company amazed us.

  65. They were at the tomb early in the morning.

  66. And when they did not find his body,

  67. they came back saying

  68. that they had even seen a vision of angels

  69. who said that he was alive.

  70. Some of those who were with us

  71. went to the tomb

  72. and found it just as the woman had said,

  73. but him they did not see.

  74. And he said to them,

  75. O foolish ones,

  76. and slow of heart

  77. to believe all that the prophets have spoken.

  78. Was it not necessary

  79. that the Christ should suffer these things

  80. and enter into his glory?

  81. And beginning with Moses

  82. and all the prophets,

  83. he interpreted to them

  84. in all the scriptures

  85. the things concerning himself.

  86. So they drew near to the village

  87. to which they were going.

  88. He acted as if he were going further.

  89. But they urged him strongly,

  90. saying,

  91. Stay with us,

  92. for it is toward evening

  93. and the day is now far spent.

  94. So he went in to stay with them.

  95. When he was at table with them,

  96. he took the bread

  97. and blessed and broke it

  98. and gave it to them.

  99. And their eyes were opened.

  100. And they recognized him.

  101. And he vanished from their sight.

  102. They said to each other,

  103. Did not our hearts burn within us

  104. while he talked to us on the road,

  105. while he opened to us

  106. the scriptures.

  107. This is God's holy

  108. and authoritative word.

  109. Even if you don't teach vocationally

  110. like I do,

  111. you have probably taught someone something.

  112. We do all kinds of teaching informally

  113. in various contexts.

  114. And you may have experienced

  115. that gratifying moment

  116. when the person

  117. that you're teaching something to

  118. finally gets something

  119. that you're saying.

  120. That aha moment.

  121. The moment when the penny drops,

  122. as the expression goes.

  123. When something finally clicks

  124. in their minds

  125. and their eyes are open

  126. to new things.

  127. That teaching begins

  128. to affect that person.

  129. Changes the way they think

  130. where they do things.

  131. And one of the most humbling aspects

  132. of being a pastor

  133. and a preacher of God's word

  134. is that no matter how hard I try,

  135. I can't,

  136. in my own,

  137. produce that

  138. in the people that are listening.

  139. I can't open the spiritual eyes

  140. of a single human being

  141. to the wonders of the gospel

  142. of Jesus Christ.

  143. Christ.

  144. And that's the case

  145. not because of my personal limitations,

  146. of which admittedly there are many,

  147. but because of an inherently

  148. human limitation.

  149. This was the case

  150. even for the 19th century

  151. British pastor

  152. known as the Prince of Preachers,

  153. Charles Spurgeon.

  154. He puts it this way

  155. in one of his sermons.

  156. The gospel is preached

  157. in the ears of all.

  158. It only comes with power

  159. to some.

  160. The power that is in the gospel

  161. does not lie

  162. in the eloquence

  163. of the preacher.

  164. Otherwise,

  165. men would be

  166. the converter of souls.

  167. Nor does it lie

  168. in the preacher's learning.

  169. Otherwise,

  170. it would consist

  171. in the wisdom of man.

  172. The power which converts souls

  173. does not even lie

  174. in the preacher's simplicity.

  175. or adaptation

  176. to his work.

  177. That is a secondary agency,

  178. but not the cause.

  179. Again,

  180. the power which converts souls

  181. does not even lie

  182. in the pathos

  183. which the speaker

  184. may employ.

  185. Men may weep

  186. to the tragic muse

  187. in a theater

  188. as well as

  189. to prophetic strains

  190. in a chapel.

  191. Their creaturely passions

  192. may be impressed

  193. through the acting

  194. on the stage

  195. as well as

  196. by the utterance

  197. of God's own servants.

  198. No.

  199. There is something

  200. more than this

  201. needed.

  202. And where it is absent,

  203. all preaching

  204. is nothing.

  205. We might preach

  206. till our tongues

  207. rotted,

  208. till we should exhaust

  209. our lungs and die,

  210. but never a soul

  211. would be converted

  212. unless there were

  213. the mysterious power

  214. of the Holy Spirit

  215. going with it,

  216. changing the will

  217. of man.

  218. O sirs,

  219. we might as well

  220. preach to stone walls

  221. as preached to humanity

  222. unless the Holy Spirit

  223. is with the word

  224. to give it power

  225. to convert

  226. the soul.

  227. Our converts

  228. are worth nothing.

  229. If they are converted

  230. by man,

  231. they can be

  232. unconverted by man.

  233. If some charm

  234. or power

  235. of one preacher

  236. can bring them

  237. to Christ,

  238. some charm

  239. or power

  240. of another preacher

  241. can take them

  242. from Christ.

  243. True conversion

  244. is the work

  245. of the Holy Spirit

  246. and of the Holy Spirit

  247. alone.

  248. Our passage today

  249. is one of the

  250. clearest demonstrations

  251. of that reality

  252. in all of Scripture.

  253. It teaches us

  254. that God

  255. is the one

  256. who opens

  257. the eyes

  258. of our hearts

  259. so that we

  260. understand his word

  261. and believe

  262. in Christ,

  263. the Redeemer.

  264. That's the main point

  265. of this passage.

  266. And I will unpack

  267. that in two parts.

  268. First,

  269. we'll talk about

  270. believing in the

  271. spoken,

  272. word,

  273. in verses 13 to 27.

  274. And then we'll talk

  275. about partaking

  276. in the broken bread

  277. in verses 28 to 35.

  278. So let's first

  279. look at believing

  280. in the spoken word.

  281. So far in this

  282. last two chapters,

  283. we've seen

  284. two clues

  285. about Jesus'

  286. resurrection.

  287. First,

  288. the empty tomb.

  289. And second,

  290. the angelic announcement.

  291. But despite

  292. the woman

  293. sharing this news

  294. of Jesus'

  295. resurrection

  296. and the vision

  297. of the angels

  298. to the apostles

  299. and the disciples,

  300. it said in verse 10

  301. that they did not

  302. believe them.

  303. And that brings us

  304. to this most dramatic

  305. resurrection account

  306. in all of the Gospels.

  307. It says in verse 13,

  308. that very day,

  309. meaning still the same day

  310. of the preceding events,

  311. the Sunday morning

  312. of Resurrection Sunday,

  313. and two of them

  314. were going to a village

  315. named Emmaus

  316. about seven miles

  317. from Jerusalem.

  318. Two of them

  319. is a reference

  320. to the group

  321. of apostles

  322. and disciples

  323. that were just

  324. mentioned,

  325. the very group

  326. that did not believe

  327. the report of the woman.

  328. And one of them

  329. is named Cleopas,

  330. verse 18.

  331. And since he's not

  332. one of the remaining

  333. eleven apostles,

  334. and presumably

  335. his companion

  336. is also not an apostle

  337. since he's not named,

  338. these two are part

  339. of Jesus'

  340. larger group

  341. of disciples.

  342. And the fact

  343. that there's two

  344. of them should be

  345. alert to us already

  346. if you've been with us

  347. throughout the Gospel

  348. of Luke,

  349. because at every

  350. critical juncture

  351. of the Gospel

  352. of Luke,

  353. Luke has taken pains

  354. to tell us

  355. that there were

  356. two or at least

  357. three witnesses

  358. to attest to

  359. every event

  360. of Jesus' life.

  361. At his birth,

  362. at his trial,

  363. at his death,

  364. at his resurrection.

  365. So Luke wants

  366. to note here

  367. by showing us

  368. that there were

  369. two witnesses

  370. that this is not

  371. a fanciful story

  372. made up by a disciple

  373. who is eager

  374. for people's attention.

  375. It's a valid testimony

  376. confirmed by two witnesses.

  377. And they're headed

  378. to Emmaus

  379. from Jerusalem,

  380. meaning that they're

  381. likely headed home.

  382. They had come

  383. to Jerusalem

  384. as pilgrims

  385. to partake

  386. in the Passover feast,

  387. the biggest festival

  388. of the year

  389. for faithful Jews.

  390. And perhaps

  391. they had come

  392. hoping to witness

  393. Jesus' rise to power

  394. as the Messianic king.

  395. Maybe they even wanted

  396. to partake

  397. in a revolution,

  398. a political revolution,

  399. to overthrow

  400. the Roman Empire.

  401. But they had

  402. been disappointed.

  403. Jesus was crucified,

  404. buried,

  405. and despite

  406. titillating reports

  407. of the empty tomb,

  408. no one had

  409. seen Jesus

  410. in this gospel

  411. account in Luke.

  412. They decided

  413. that they have to

  414. get back

  415. to their normal lives.

  416. But on their journey,

  417. they could not get

  418. the significant events

  419. that had just

  420. transpired in Jerusalem

  421. out of their minds.

  422. So it says in verse 14,

  423. they were talking

  424. with each other

  425. about all these things

  426. that had happened.

  427. So earlier

  428. in chapter 24,

  429. verse 9,

  430. the woman returning

  431. from the tomb

  432. told all these things,

  433. the same phrase

  434. to them.

  435. And so all these things

  436. that they're talking

  437. about right now

  438. refers both to Jesus' death

  439. and to the reports

  440. of his resurrection.

  441. And it says in verse 15

  442. that they were talking

  443. and discussing together.

  444. The word discuss there

  445. means to debate.

  446. It means to argue.

  447. Earlier in chapter 22,

  448. verse 23,

  449. it was translated this way

  450. that saying more,

  451. they began to question

  452. one another,

  453. referring to the 12 apostles

  454. debating among themselves

  455. which of them

  456. will be the unfaithful

  457. disciple

  458. that betrays Jesus

  459. as he just predicted.

  460. And it's the same word

  461. that's used

  462. in Luke's sequel

  463. in Acts chapter 6,

    Acts 6:9

  464. verse 9,

  465. when it says

  466. that some of the Jews

  467. rose up

  468. and disputed

  469. with Stephen.

  470. It's a heated discussion

  471. because that dispute

  472. eventually leads

  473. to Stephen

  474. becoming the first

  475. Christian martyr.

  476. He's stoned to death

  477. as a result

  478. of that heated discussion.

  479. This is not just

  480. the kind of a casual

  481. small talk

  482. kind of conversation.

  483. This is an intense debate

  484. that these two disciples

  485. are having

  486. about the significance

  487. and the reality

  488. of the events

  489. that had just transpired

  490. on their way back home

  491. from Jerusalem.

  492. But while they were doing that,

  493. it says,

  494. Jesus himself

  495. drew near

  496. and went with them.

  497. It's so ironic.

  498. It's almost comical.

  499. While they are

  500. intensely debating,

  501. what just happened?

  502. Jesus died.

  503. But what are these women

  504. talking about

  505. that he's raised

  506. from the dead?

  507. These visions of angels.

  508. As they're doing it,

  509. Jesus himself

  510. comes alongside them

  511. and starts walking

  512. with them.

  513. But it says

  514. in verse 16,

  515. their eyes were kept

  516. from recognizing him.

  517. It's possible

  518. that the disciples

  519. failed to recognize Jesus

  520. because after his resurrection,

  521. he appeared to them

  522. in a different form.

  523. Mark 16, 12

  524. mentions that

  525. Jesus appeared

  526. in another form

  527. to the two

  528. of his disciples.

  529. But to focus

  530. on Jesus'

  531. altered appearance

  532. in this passage

  533. is to miss the point

  534. that Luke

  535. is himself making.

  536. Because Luke's focus

  537. is not on

  538. Jesus' appearance,

  539. but on the disciples'

  540. lack of spiritual vision.

  541. Their eyes

  542. were kept

  543. from recognizing him.

  544. This is another instance

  545. of the divine passive

  546. that biblical writers

  547. often use

  548. where God

  549. is the assumed subject

  550. of a passive verb

  551. that lacks a subject.

  552. In Luke 9,

    Luke 9:44–45

  553. verses 44 to 45,

  554. after Jesus

  555. predicted his death

  556. to his disciples

  557. very explicitly,

  558. he said that

  559. his disciples

  560. did not understand

  561. this saying

  562. and it was concealed

  563. from them

  564. so that they might

  565. not perceive it.

  566. similarly,

  567. in Luke 18,

    Luke 18:31–34

  568. verses 31 to 34,

  569. after Jesus prophesied

  570. that he would be

  571. delivered over

  572. to the Gentiles

  573. and will be mocked

  574. and shamefully treated

  575. and spit upon,

  576. and after flogging him,

  577. they will kill him

  578. and on the third day

  579. he will rise.

  580. He said that

  581. his disciples

  582. understood

  583. none of these things.

  584. The saying

  585. was hidden

  586. from them

  587. and they did not

  588. grasp

  589. what was said.

  590. These were all instances

  591. of divine concealment.

  592. God conceals

  593. until in his perfect time

  594. he reveals.

  595. To conceal

  596. and reveal

  597. spiritual realities

  598. is God's

  599. sovereign prerogative.

  600. And in this instance,

  601. God conceals

  602. the identity of Jesus

  603. from these two disciples.

  604. Verse 17 continues,

  605. And Jesus said to them,

  606. What is this conversation

  607. that you are holding

  608. with each other

  609. as you walk?

  610. And they stood still

  611. looking sad.

  612. It's a very dramatic moment.

  613. They were walking

  614. and as Jesus came

  615. alongside them,

  616. they didn't stop walking.

  617. They kept walking,

  618. probably assuming

  619. Jesus is another one

  620. of those pilgrims

  621. that are heading back

  622. from Jerusalem

  623. after the Passover feast.

  624. But then when Jesus

  625. asks this question,

  626. it stops them

  627. right in their tracks.

  628. They stop.

  629. And it says

  630. that they were looking sad.

  631. that shows how fresh

  632. this grief is.

  633. It's been three days.

  634. They really had put

  635. their hopes in Jesus.

  636. But Jesus died.

  637. And they were sad.

  638. And they can't believe

  639. how clueless

  640. this companion is.

  641. One of them named Cleopas

  642. answers Jesus in this way

  643. in verse 18.

  644. Are you the only visitor

  645. to Jerusalem

  646. who does not know

  647. the things that have happened

  648. there in these days?

  649. In other words,

  650. have you been living

  651. under a rock?

  652. How can you not know

  653. what has happened?

  654. The whole city

  655. knows about it.

  656. But Jesus wants to hear

  657. their take on

  658. the recent events.

  659. So he feigns ignorance.

  660. He says,

  661. what things?

  662. It's so funny.

  663. And they say

  664. in verses 19 to 20,

  665. concerning Jesus

  666. of Nazareth,

  667. a man who was

  668. a prophet,

  669. mighty indeed

  670. and were before God

  671. and all the people.

  672. And how our chief

  673. priests and rulers

  674. delivered him up

  675. to be condemned

  676. to death

  677. and crucified him.

  678. So Jesus himself

  679. noted his prophetic

  680. identity throughout

  681. the gospel

  682. many times.

  683. And the crowds

  684. widely acclaimed

  685. Jesus to be a prophet.

  686. So this is not

  687. a surprising

  688. assessment of Jesus.

  689. He was a man

  690. who was a prophet,

  691. mighty indeed

  692. and word

  693. before God

  694. and all the people.

  695. But they say

  696. that their own

  697. people,

  698. the Jews,

  699. our chief priests,

  700. they say,

  701. our chief priests

  702. and rulers

  703. delivered him up

  704. to be condemned

  705. to death

  706. and crucified him.

  707. Of course,

  708. the Romans

  709. were involved

  710. in condemning

  711. Jesus to death

  712. and carrying out

  713. the execution.

  714. But these disciples

  715. lay the chief blame

  716. on their own leaders.

  717. for delivering Jesus

  718. and crucifying him.

  719. So the disciples

  720. are relaying to Jesus

  721. a summary report

  722. of what happened

  723. over these last three days.

  724. And then in verse 21,

  725. they start to get personal.

  726. But we,

  727. but we had hoped

  728. that he was the one

  729. to redeem Israel.

  730. it's really hard

  731. to imagine

  732. the depth

  733. of their disappointment.

  734. The Jewish people,

  735. if you study history,

  736. are some of the most

  737. persecuted

  738. and marginalized

  739. and oppressed people

  740. in all of human history.

  741. And they had been waiting

  742. for hundreds

  743. and hundreds of years

  744. for their redemption.

  745. And they thought

  746. their redeemer,

  747. the prophet said,

  748. Messiah,

  749. had finally come.

  750. They're putting

  751. all their hopes in him.

  752. And then just like that,

  753. after that triumphant entry

  754. to Jerusalem

  755. on Sunday,

  756. that very same week,

  757. tried,

  758. sentenced,

  759. crucified.

  760. They had hoped

  761. that he would redeem Israel.

  762. This is the hope

  763. that was first expressed

  764. by Zechariah's prophecy

  765. in Luke 1,

  766. 67 to 75.

  767. Blessed be the Lord God

  768. of Israel,

  769. for he has visited

  770. and redeemed his people

  771. and has raised up

  772. a horn of salvation

  773. for us

  774. in the house

  775. of his servant David.

  776. This expectation

  777. that Jesus would redeem Israel

  778. was confirmed

  779. by prophetess Anna

  780. in Luke 2,

    Luke 2:38

  781. verse 38.

  782. When she,

  783. at the time Jesus

  784. was being dedicated

  785. in the temple,

  786. when she gave thanks to God

  787. and spoke of Jesus

  788. to all who are waiting

  789. for the redemption

  790. of Jerusalem.

  791. to redeem

  792. is to pay

  793. for the freedom

  794. of a slave.

  795. To redeem

  796. is to pay

  797. for the forgiveness

  798. of a debtor,

  799. of a sinner.

  800. The idea of redemption

  801. primarily recalls

  802. in biblical background

  803. the Exodus.

  804. In order to commemorate

  805. how the Lord

  806. brought Israel

  807. out of Egypt

  808. from the house

  809. of slavery,

  810. commemorating

  811. that God

  812. did this

  813. by killing

  814. all the firstborn

  815. in the land

  816. of Egypt.

  817. Exodus 13

  818. commanded the Israelites

  819. consecrate

  820. all your firstborn

  821. by sacrificing

  822. to the Lord

  823. all the firstborn

  824. male animals

  825. and by redeeming

  826. all the firstborn

  827. sons.

  828. they had to pay,

  829. make a payment

  830. of redemption

  831. for their sons

  832. so that they

  833. could remember

  834. that their sons,

  835. their firstborn sons

  836. belonged to God.

  837. That they too

  838. deserved to die.

  839. The only reason

  840. they survived,

  841. the only reason

  842. Israel was redeemed

  843. out of their slavery

  844. in Egypt

  845. was because

  846. they killed

  847. the lamb

  848. following God's

  849. instruction

  850. and daubed its blood

  851. on their doorposts

  852. so that God

  853. went judging

  854. and killing

  855. the firstborns

  856. of all of Egypt

  857. passed over

  858. their households,

  859. sparing them.

  860. With this biblical

  861. and historical

  862. background in mind,

  863. we can better

  864. understand what it

  865. means that Jesus

  866. is the redeemer

  867. of Israel.

  868. To be sure,

  869. these two disciples

  870. and others

  871. probably had hoped

  872. that Jesus would

  873. redeem Israel

  874. from their political

  875. slavery to Roman

  876. empire as well.

  877. But biblically,

  878. the expectation

  879. for redemption

  880. goes way beyond that.

  881. Jesus is the one

  882. who pays

  883. for the forgiveness

  884. of their sins,

  885. for the freedom

  886. from slavery

  887. to sin

  888. and death.

  889. As Titus 2,

    Titus 2:14

  890. verse 14 says,

  891. Jesus Christ

  892. gave himself

  893. for us

  894. to redeem us

  895. from all lawlessness

  896. and to purify

  897. for himself

  898. a people

  899. for his own possession

  900. who are zealous

  901. for good works.

  902. Apart from Christ,

  903. we are all

  904. slaves to sin.

  905. apart from Christ,

  906. we're all debtors.

  907. But because Christ

  908. paid the price

  909. of our redemption

  910. by dying on the cross,

  911. we who have been

  912. united with Christ

  913. through faith

  914. have full forgiveness

  915. of our sins

  916. and freedom

  917. from slavery

  918. to sin.

  919. These two disciples

  920. had hope

  921. that Jesus

  922. was the one

  923. to redeem Israel.

  924. but he was killed.

  925. Their hope

  926. was snuffed out.

  927. But then something

  928. else happened.

  929. They continue

  930. in verses 22 to 24.

  931. Yes,

  932. and besides all this,

  933. it is now the third day

  934. since these things happened.

  935. Moreover,

  936. some woman

  937. of our company

  938. amazed us.

  939. They were at the tomb

  940. early in the morning

  941. and when they did not

  942. find his body,

  943. they came back

  944. saying that they had

  945. even seen a vision

  946. of angels

  947. who said that he was alive.

  948. Some of those

  949. who were with us

  950. went to the tomb

  951. and found it

  952. just as the woman

  953. had said,

  954. but him

  955. they did not see.

  956. Only Peter

  957. was mentioned

  958. as going to the tomb

  959. after hearing

  960. the woman's report

  961. in verse 12,

  962. but we find out here

  963. that Luke

  964. was being selective

  965. in his reporting earlier.

  966. There were others

  967. that went with him

  968. and we know

  969. that that's confirmed

  970. by John 20,

  971. 33 to 10,

  972. which tells us

  973. that Apostle John

  974. also accompanied Peter

  975. to the tomb.

  976. But the most telling

  977. point of this

  978. recounting

  979. of what has happened

  980. is at the end

  981. of verse 24.

  982. They found it

  983. just as the woman

  984. had said,

  985. but him

  986. they did not see.

  987. Once again,

  988. there's a contrast

  989. between hearing

  990. and seeing,

  991. which we have seen

  992. frequently throughout

  993. the gospel of Luke.

  994. Luke has been telling us

  995. over and over again

  996. that instead of

  997. seeking to see,

  998. we should hear

  999. the gospel of Jesus Christ

  1000. and believe.

  1001. And that's again

  1002. his emphasis here.

  1003. We saw earlier

  1004. in verse 11

  1005. that the woman's report

  1006. of Jesus' resurrection

  1007. seemed to these disciples

  1008. an idle tale

  1009. and they did not

  1010. believe them.

1011. And so these two disciples

1012. on the road to Emmaus

  1013. lack faith.

  1014. They have heard

  1015. the report

  1016. but they're still waiting

  1017. for the decisive evidence.

  1018. They won't believe

  1019. until they see

  1020. the risen Jesus

  1021. with their own eyes.

  1022. And until then,

  1023. for them,

  1024. resurrection is just

  1025. hearsay,

  1026. a rumor.

1027. The irony of it all,

  1028. of course,

  1029. is that they have

  1030. Jesus

1031. right in front of them.

  1032. They're seeing

  1033. Jesus

  1034. yet they are not

  1035. seeing

  1036. because they do not

  1037. see with eyes

  1038. of faith.

  1039. So Jesus

  1040. roundly rebukes them

  1041. in verse 25.

  1042. O foolish ones

  1043. and slow of heart

  1044. to believe

  1045. all that the prophets

  1046. have spoken.

  1047. The exclamation,

  1048. O foolish one,

  1049. that conveys

  1050. Jesus' emotion.

  1051. He's passionately

  1052. lamenting

  1053. their lack of faith.

  1054. O foolish ones

  1055. and slow of heart

  1056. to believe.

  1057. Foolishness

  1058. literally means

  1059. lack of understanding,

  1060. a senselessness.

  1061. But it's not

  1062. merely a mental lapse

  1063. or an intellectual

  1064. deficiency

  1065. that leads to unbelief.

  1066. It's also

  1067. slowness of heart.

  1068. The heart

  1069. is a reference

  1070. to the center

  1071. of a person's

  1072. inner spiritual life.

  1073. The seedbed

  1074. of one's emotions,

  1075. will,

  1076. thoughts even.

  1077. The disciples

  1078. thought that

  1079. what was lacking

  1080. was the evidence.

  1081. They were waiting

  1082. to see Jesus

  1083. with their own eyes,

  1084. but what was

  1085. actually lacking

  1086. was their understanding.

  1087. They thought

  1088. that they were

  1089. waiting on God

  1090. to act

  1091. to redeem Israel,

  1092. but in reality,

  1093. it was their

  1094. spiritual sluggishness.

  1095. They were the ones

1096. that were slow of heart.

  1097. That's what

  1098. prevented them

  1099. from believing

  1100. in God's redemption

  1101. through Jesus.

  1102. Perhaps some of you

  1103. are here

  1104. and you do not

  1105. yet believe

  1106. in Jesus

  1107. because you

  1108. don't think

  1109. there is

  1110. enough evidence.

  1111. You won't

  1112. believe in God

  1113. until you see

  1114. an unmistakable

  1115. sign,

  1116. an indisputable

  1117. sign.

  1118. sign.

  1119. But God's

  1120. word

  1121. tells us

  1122. that our

  1123. unbelief

  1124. is a reflection

  1125. of our own

  1126. foolishness

  1127. and of our

  1128. own slowness

  1129. of heart

  1130. to believe.

  1131. So we are

  1132. not

  1133. excused

  1134. from our

  1135. unbelief

  1136. because the

  1137. blame lies

  1138. not with God

  1139. who failed

  1140. to reveal

  1141. himself,

  1142. but with us.

  1143. And notice

  1144. what Jesus

  1145. rebukes

  1146. these disciples

  1147. for in verse 25.

  1148. It's really

  1149. interesting.

  1150. He doesn't say

  1151. all foolish

  1152. ones and

  1153. slow of heart

  1154. to believe

  1155. even after

  1156. the vision

  1157. of angels.

  1158. He doesn't

  1159. say all foolish

  1160. ones and

  1161. slow of heart

  1162. to believe

  1163. even after

  1164. seeing the

  1165. empty tomb

  1166. or foolish

  1167. ones slow

  1168. of heart

  1169. to recognize

  1170. me and

  1171. believe in

  1172. me when

  1173. I'm right

  1174. in front

  1175. of you.

  1176. Jesus

  1177. doesn't say

  1178. that.

  1179. He says

  1180. instead

  1181. all foolish

  1182. ones and

  1183. slow of heart

  1184. to believe

  1185. all that

  1186. the prophets

  1187. have spoken.

  1188. Jesus

  1189. doesn't

  1190. rebuke them

  1191. for not

  1192. believing

  1193. what they

  1194. see with

  1195. their eyes.

  1196. Jesus

  1197. rebukes

  1198. them for

  1199. not

  1200. believing

  1201. what they

  1202. have heard

  1203. from the

  1204. scriptures

  1205. believers

  1206. because they

  1207. should have

  1208. believed

  1209. from what

  1210. they have

  1211. heard

  1212. in God's

  1213. word.

  1214. And so

  1215. Jesus

  1216. continues in

  1217. verse 26

  1218. was it not

  1219. necessary

  1220. that the

  1221. Christ should

  1222. suffer these

  1223. things and

  1224. enter into

  1225. his glory.

  1226. Luke often

  1227. uses this

  1228. language of

  1229. must or

  1230. necessity to

  1231. describe something

  1232. God has

  1233. foreordained.

  1234. he's saying

  1235. here that

  1236. his

  1237. humiliation

  1238. and his

  1239. glorification

  1240. his death

  1241. resurrection

  1242. and ascension

  1243. they were a

  1244. divine

  1245. necessity.

  1246. Scripture

  1247. demanded it

  1248. because it

  1249. was the

  1250. means that

  1251. God had

  1252. foreordained

  1253. and written

  1254. about throughout

  1255. his scriptures

  1256. for the

  1257. salvation of

  1258. his people.

  1259. for example

  1260. Isaiah

    Isaiah 53:5

  1261. chapter 53

  1262. verse 5

  1263. prophesied

  1264. that the

  1265. Messiah

  1266. would be

  1267. pierced

  1268. for our

  1269. transgressions

  1270. that he

  1271. would be

  1272. crushed

  1273. for our

  1274. iniquities

  1275. but then

  1276. later on

  1277. that after

  1278. suffering

  1279. these things

  1280. he would

  1281. be raised

  1282. he would

  1283. be given

  1284. glory

  1285. victory

  1286. for the

  1287. salvation

  1288. of many

  1289. and so

  1290. it was

  1291. necessary

  1292. that the

  1293. Christ

  1294. should

  1295. suffer

  1296. these

  1297. things

  1298. and enter

  1299. into

  1300. his

  1301. glory

  1302. just as

  1303. a grain

  1304. of wheat

  1305. must first

  1306. be buried

  1307. in the

  1308. earth

  1309. experiencing

  1310. a form

  1311. of death

  1312. in order

  1313. for it

  1314. to then

  1315. sprout up

  1316. into life

  1317. and bear

  1318. much

  1319. fruit

  1320. it was

  1321. necessary

  1322. for Jesus

  1323. to suffer

  1324. and die

  1325. as Hebrews

    Hebrews 2:14

  1326. chapter 2

  1327. verse 14

  1328. and 15

  1329. says

  1330. since

  1331. the children

  1332. of God

  1333. share in

  1334. flesh and

  1335. blood

  1336. Jesus

  1337. himself

  1338. likewise

  1339. partook

  1340. of the

  1341. same

  1342. things

  1343. that

  1344. through

  1345. death

  1346. he might

  1347. destroy

  1348. the one

  1349. who has

  1350. the power

  1351. of death

  1352. that is

  1353. the devil

  1354. and deliver

  1355. all those

  1356. who through

  1357. fear of

  1358. death

  1359. were subject

  1360. to lifelong

  1361. slavery

  1362. Jesus

  1363. had to

  1364. first

  1365. divest

  1366. himself

  1367. of his

  1368. heavenly

  1369. glory

  1370. and take

  1371. on human

  1372. flesh

  1373. so that

  1374. he might

  1375. take sinful

  1376. men and

  1377. women

  1378. who wallow

  1379. in shame

  1380. and dishonor

  1381. and lift

  1382. them up

  1383. to his

  1384. glory

  1385. Jesus

  1386. had to

  1387. first

  1388. die

  1389. in order

  1390. to defeat

  1391. death

  1392. on our

  1393. behalf

  1394. and raise

  1395. us up

  1396. to eternal

  1397. life

  1398. Jesus

  1399. had to

  1400. first

  1401. stoop

  1402. low

  1403. into

  1404. our

  1405. mire

  1406. of sin

  1407. in order

  1408. to raise

  1409. us up

  1410. and wash

  1411. us clean

  1412. that's

  1413. what Jesus

  1414. did on

  1415. the cross

  1416. he was

  1417. bearing

  1418. the weight

  1419. of our

  1420. sins

  1421. think about

  1422. it this

  1423. way

  1424. imagine

  1425. sin is

  1426. like a

  1427. great

  1428. boulder

  1429. beneath

  1430. which we

  1431. are all

  1432. being

  1433. crushed

  1434. we're

  1435. suffocating

  1436. underneath

  1437. it

  1438. utterly

  1439. hopeless

  1440. under

  1441. its

  1442. bone

  1443. crushing

  1444. heft

  1445. but

  1446. Christ

  1447. himself

  1448. crawls

  1449. underneath

  1450. it

  1451. and

  1452. and

  1453. appeared

  1454. that at

  1455. first

  1456. he

  1457. himself

  1458. was

  1459. overcome

  1460. by it

  1461. crushed

  1462. by its

  1463. massive

  1464. weight

  1465. he

  1466. disappeared

  1467. underneath

  1468. it

  1469. the rock

  1470. didn't

  1471. seem to

  1472. budge

  1473. at all

  1474. but

  1475. then

  1476. on the

  1477. third

  1478. day

  1479. with a

  1480. great

  1481. heave

  1482. as if

  1483. there's

  1484. an

  1485. earthquake

  1486. the

  1487. boulder

  1488. stirs

  1489. is lifted

  1490. up from

  1491. the ground

  1492. and

  1493. Jesus

  1494. emerges

  1495. from

  1496. the ground

  1497. to carry

  1498. that

  1499. massive

  1500. weight

  1501. and to

  1502. cast it

  1503. into the

  1504. seas

  1505. so that

  1506. we could

  1507. go free

  1508. his

  1509. suffering

  1510. his

  1511. humiliation

  1512. his

  1513. death

  1514. was

  1515. necessary

  1516. for our

  1517. redemption

  1518. and

  1519. then in

  1520. verse 27

  1521. Jesus

  1522. proceeds

  1523. to

  1524. show

  1525. these

  1526. disciples

  1527. this

  1528. truth

  1529. from

  1530. the

  1531. scriptures

  1532. he

  1533. says

  1534. and

  1535. beginning

  1536. with

  1537. Moses

  1538. and all

  1539. the

  1540. prophets

  1541. he

  1542. interpreted

  1543. to

  1544. them

  1545. in

  1546. all

  1547. the

  1548. scriptures

  1549. the

  1550. things

  1551. concerning

  1552. himself

  1553. Moses

  1554. and the

  1555. prophets

  1556. refer to

  1557. the two

  1558. of the

  1559. largest

  1560. sections

  1561. of the

  1562. Old

  1563. Testament

  1564. scripture

  1565. the

  1566. law

  1567. and the

  1568. prophets

  1569. it's

  1570. often

  1571. used

  1572. as a

  1573. shorthand

  1574. for the

  1575. entirety

  1576. of

  1577. scriptures

  1578. and

  1579. notice

  1580. the

  1581. repetition

  1582. of the

  1583. word

  1584. all

  1585. in

  1586. this

  1587. verse

  1588. beginning

  1589. with

  1590. Moses

  1591. and

  1592. all

  1593. the

  1594. prophets

  1595. he

  1596. interpreted

  1597. to

  1598. them

  1599. in

  1600. all

  1601. the

  1602. scripture

  1603. the

  1604. things

  1605. concerning

  1606. himself

  1607. in

  1608. other

  1609. words

  1610. Jesus

  1611. the

  1612. son

  1613. of

  1614. God

  1615. the

  1616. incarnate

  1617. word

  1618. the

  1619. word

  1620. become

  1621. flesh

  1622. himself

  1623. he

  1624. believed

  1625. that

  1626. all

  1627. of

  1628. scriptures

  1629. from

  1630. Genesis

  1631. and

  1632. now

  1633. to

  1634. revelation

  1635. spoke

  1636. of

  1637. him

  1638. he

  1639. fulfilled

  1640. all of

  1641. the

  1642. Old

  1643. Testament

  1644. scriptures

  1645. earlier

  1646. in

  1647. Luke

    Luke 16 chapter mention

  1648. chapter

  1649. 16

  1650. in

  1651. the

  1652. parable

  1653. of

  1654. the

  1655. rich

  1656. man

  1657. and

  1658. Lazarus

  1659. when

  1660. the

  1661. rich

  1662. man

  1663. who

  1664. was

  1665. in

  1666. torment

  1667. in

  1668. Hades

  1669. begged

  1670. Abraham

  1671. in

  1672. heaven

  1673. to

  1674. send

  1675. poor

  1676. Lazarus

  1677. who

  1678. was

  1679. in

  1680. heaven

  1681. with

  1682. him

  1683. to

  1684. send

  1685. Lazarus

  1686. to

  1687. his

  1688. brothers

  1689. who

  1690. are

  1691. living

  1692. in

  1693. ignorance

  1694. about

  1695. God

  1696. he

  1697. says

  1698. so

  1699. that

  1700. he

  1701. may

  1702. warn

  1703. them

  1704. lest

  1705. they

  1706. also

  1707. come

  1708. into

  1709. this

  1710. place

  1711. of

  1712. torment

  1713. Abraham

  1714. answered

  1715. them

  1716. this

  1717. way

  1718. they

  1719. have

  1720. Moses

  1721. and

  1722. the

  1723. prophets

  1724. let

  1725. them

  1726. hear

  1727. them

  1728. for

  1729. if

  1730. they

  1731. do

  1732. not

  1733. hear

  1734. Moses

  1735. and

  1736. the

  1737. prophets

  1738. neither

  1739. will

  1740. they

  1741. be

  1742. convinced

  1743. if

  1744. someone

  1745. should

  1746. rise

  1747. from

  1748. the

  1749. dead

  1750. those

  1751. words

  1752. are

  1753. literally

  1754. being

  1755. fulfilled

  1756. in

  1757. our

  1758. passage

  1759. Jesus

  1760. has

  1761. literally

  1762. been

  1763. raised

  1764. from

  1765. the

  1766. dead

  1767. and

  1768. he

  1769. is

  1770. announcing

  1771. to

  1772. them

  1773. this

  1774. redemption

  1775. God's

  1776. salvation

  1777. plan

  1778. and yet

  1779. these two

1780. disciples on the road to Emmaus do not believe

1781. because they have not listened to Moses and the prophets

1782. they have not listened to scriptures

1783. they are like two men who are tinkering around with like a new toy or a gadget

1784. or a tool that they just received as a present

1785. it's a really intense discussion they are earnestly debating what it's for

  1786. I think it's for this

1787. no then it wouldn't have this button right here I don't think it's for that it's for that

1788. and they seem really smart and serious and articulate but then it's all silly if they're ignoring the instruction manual

1789. they should have known better

1790. these two disciples were intensely debating the significance of the recent events was Jesus really the Messiah

  1791. why did he die

1792. what does it all mean

1793. are these reports of the resurrection true

  1794. but all along

1795. the scriptures that they claimed to believe

  1796. had explained

  1797. everything

  1798. had prophesied of everything

1799. and too many people nowadays

  1800. still do the same

1801. you sit around debating God

  1802. and religion

  1803. and Jesus

1804. oh no one really knows

  1805. God they say

1806. no one really knows the way of salvation

1807. all religions are basically the same

1808. they're all talking about the same thing

1809. getting to the same place

1810. they're all partial pictures of this ultimate reality

  1811. that's what they say

1812. well that sentiment sounds noble

  1813. and humble

  1814. until we remember

  1815. that God has actually

  1816. revealed himself to us

1817. God has spoken through his scriptures

  1818. God has said

  1819. in his word

  1820. that to know him

  1821. and to love him

  1822. and to worship him

1823. is the reason we were created

1824. that's the purpose and meaning of our lives

1825. God has said in his scriptures

  1826. that he has accomplished

  1827. his salvation plan

  1828. through his son

  1829. Jesus Christ

  1830. through his death

  1831. and resurrection

1832. God has said in his word

  1833. that if we confess

  1834. with our mouth

  1835. that Jesus is Lord

  1836. and if we believe

  1837. in our hearts

  1838. that he

  1839. has been raised

  1840. from the dead

1841. that we will be saved

  1842. God has spoken

  1843. he has revealed himself

1844. and for us to listen

  1845. to all of that

1846. and then to plead ignorance

  1847. and to claim uncertainty

  1848. that's not humility

  1849. that's hubris

  1850. that's foolishness

  1851. slowness of heart

  1852. to believe

1853. and these very same scriptures

1854. are being proclaimed to you

  1855. right now

  1856. do you believe it

  1857. we must believe

  1858. in the spoken word

1859. but we also must partake

  1860. in the broken bread

  1861. that's my second point

1862. it says in verses 28 to 29

  1863. so they drew near

  1864. to the village

1865. to which they were going

  1866. he acted as if

  1867. he were going further

  1868. but they urged him

  1869. strongly saying

  1870. stay with us

1871. for it is toward evening

1872. and the day is not far spent

  1873. so he went in

  1874. to stay with them

1875. so as they're approaching Emmaus

  1876. as Jesus acted

1877. as if he were going further

  1878. this is typical

  1879. kind of Middle Eastern

  1880. Asian courtesy

  1881. you don't impose

  1882. on others

  1883. hospitality

  1884. in this culture

  1885. by asking them

  1886. hey I don't have

  1887. a place to stay

  1888. for the night

1889. can I stay at your place

  1890. this evening

  1891. you don't ask that

  1892. in this culture

  1893. because to do so

  1894. would be a breach

  1895. of etiquette

  1896. because by asking them

  1897. you're really forcing

  1898. their hand

  1899. because now they can't

  1900. say no

  1901. because if they know

  1902. that brings great shame

1903. to them in that culture

  1904. so instead

  1905. even though Jesus

1906. wanted to stay with them

  1907. he acted as if

  1908. he were going further

  1909. but the disciples

  1910. urged him strongly

  1911. saying stay with us

  1912. this too is typical

  1913. Middle Eastern hospitality

1914. when your guest tells you

  1915. hey I really need

  1916. to get going

  1917. you assume

  1918. that they're just

  1919. being polite

  1920. they don't want

  1921. to over stay

  1922. they don't want

  1923. to be rude

  1924. so you insist

  1925. that they stay

  1926. no you really

  1927. must stay

  1928. when your guest

  1929. tells you

  1930. I have had enough

  1931. food to eat

  1932. I'm full

  1933. you assume

  1934. that they're just

  1935. being demure

  1936. and then you keep

  1937. heaping more food

  1938. onto their plates

  1939. so when the disciples

  1940. insist that Jesus

  1941. stay with them

  1942. he says okay

  1943. he obliges

  1944. he stays with them

  1945. in verse 30

1946. when he was at table

  1947. with them

  1948. he took the bread

  1949. and blessed

  1950. and broke it

1951. and gave it to them

  1952. this verse

  1953. shares numerous parallels

  1954. with two other

  1955. significant meals

  1956. that have taken place

1957. in the gospel of Luke

  1958. first was the feeding

  1959. of the 5,000

  1960. in Luke 9 verse 16

    Luke 9:16

  1961. and the second

  1962. was the last supper

  1963. Luke chapter 22

    Luke 22:19

  1964. verse 19

  1965. and in all three

  1966. of these meals

  1967. Jesus does the same

  1968. things

  1969. in the same

  1970. order

  1971. he takes the bread

  1972. he blesses it

  1973. or give thanks

  1974. for it

  1975. he breaks it

  1976. and he gives it

  1977. to his disciples

  1978. at the institution

  1979. of the Lord's

  1980. supper

  1981. in Luke 22

    Luke 22:19

  1982. verse 19

  1983. Jesus took bread

  1984. and when he had

  1985. given thanks

  1986. he broke it

1987. and gave it to them

  1988. saying this is my

  1989. body

  1990. which is given

  1991. for you

  1992. do this

  1993. in remembrance

  1994. of me

  1995. so it's

  1996. significant

  1997. and not

  1998. an accident

  1999. that in the

  2000. breaking of bread

  2001. as it says

  2002. in verse 31

  2003. their eyes

  2004. were opened

  2005. and they

  2006. recognized him

  2007. and he vanished

  2008. from their sight

  2009. once again

  2010. a divine passive

  2011. their eyes

  2012. were opened

  2013. who opened

  2014. their eyes

  2015. it was God

  2016. who opened

  2017. their eyes

  2018. it's a reference

  2019. to their spiritual

  2020. sight

  2021. because they had

  2022. no trouble

  2023. finding their

  2024. way to Emmaus

  2025. their eyes

  2026. physically are

  2027. working

  2028. but they lacked

  2029. spiritual vision

  2030. but they

  2031. were

  2032. because it says

  2033. in verse 16

  2034. they were kept

  2035. from recognizing

  2036. Jesus

  2037. but now

  2038. in the breaking

  2039. of bread

  2040. their eyes

  2041. are opened

  2042. the verb

  2043. to open

  2044. occurs six times

  2045. in the gospel

  2046. of Luke

  2047. and in the sequel

  2048. the book of Acts

  2049. and in all six

  2050. occurrences

  2051. it refers to

  2052. divine revelation

  2053. when God

  2054. sovereignly

  2055. opens

  2056. something

  2057. opens the eyes

  2058. of people

  2059. so that they

  2060. might perceive

  2061. so that they

  2062. might understand

  2063. and in nearly

  2064. all of those

  2065. occurrences

  2066. it specifically

  2067. refers to

  2068. God

  2069. revealing himself

  2070. through his

  2071. scriptures

  2072. and that

  2073. connection

  2074. is made

  2075. explicitly

  2076. here

  2077. in verses

  2078. 31 to 32

  2079. their eyes

  2080. were opened

  2081. and they

  2082. recognized him

  2083. and he vanished

  2084. from their sight

  2085. they said to

  2086. each other

  2087. did not our

  2088. hearts burn

  2089. with us

  2090. while he

  2091. talked to

  2092. us on

  2093. the road

  2094. while he

  2095. opened to

  2096. us

  2097. the scriptures

  2098. formerly

  2099. they were

  2100. slow of heart

  2101. to believe

  2102. but when

  2103. Jesus was

  2104. opening up

  2105. the scriptures

  2106. to them

  2107. their hearts

  2108. burned

  2109. with the light

  2110. of knowledge

  2111. and the fire

  2112. of passion

  2113. and the opening

  2114. up of the

  2115. scriptures

  2116. is what

  2117. prepares them

  2118. and is what's

  2119. connected to

  2120. the opening

  2121. up there

  2122. of their

  2123. spiritual

  2124. eyes

  2125. which happens

  2126. in the breaking

  2127. of bread

  2128. and this

  2129. sequence

  2130. anticipates

  2131. the corporate

  2132. worship of the

  2133. church

  2134. in all future

  2135. generations

  2136. where the

  2137. word

  2138. and sacrament

  2139. become the

  2140. focal points

  2141. a true

  2142. church

  2143. is a

  2144. gathering

  2145. of believers

  2146. where the

  2147. word of

  2148. Christ

  2149. is spoken

  2150. and the

  2151. bread of

  2152. Christ

  2153. is broken

  2154. that's the

  2155. definition

  2156. of the

  2157. church

  2158. a true

  2159. church

  2160. is where

  2161. the

  2162. scriptures

  2163. are opened

  2164. and the

  2165. sacrament

  2166. is eaten

  2167. and this

  2168. episode is

  2169. also a

  2170. culmination

  2171. of the

  2172. motif of

  2173. blindness

  2174. and sight

  2175. that Luke

  2176. has been

  2177. using over

  2178. and over

  2179. again

  2180. in Luke

    Luke 4:18–19

  2181. chapter 4

  2182. verses 18

  2183. to 19

  2184. Jesus

  2185. gave his

  2186. mission

  2187. statement

  2188. at the

  2189. onset

  2190. of his

  2191. public

  2192. ministry

  2193. and that

  2194. was this

  2195. the spirit

  2196. of the

  2197. Lord

  2198. is upon

  2199. me

  2200. because

  2201. he has

  2202. anointed

  2203. me to

  2204. proclaim

  2205. good news

  2206. to the

  2207. poor

  2208. he has

  2209. sent me

  2210. to proclaim

  2211. liberty

  2212. to the

  2213. captives

  2214. and recovering

  2215. of sight

  2216. to the

  2217. blind

  2218. to set

  2219. at liberty

  2220. those who

  2221. are oppressed

  2222. to proclaim

  2223. the ear

  2224. of the

  2225. Lord's

  2226. favor

  2227. these

  2228. verses

  2229. were

  2230. structured

  2231. in a

  2232. mirroring

  2233. chiastic

  2234. structure

  2235. to highlight

  2236. the middle

  2237. element

  2238. the center

  2239. element

  2240. the recovering

  2241. of sight

  2242. to the

  2243. blind

  2244. opening

  2245. the eyes

  2246. of the

  2247. blind

  2248. literally

  2249. Jesus

  2250. does that

  2251. as well

  2252. but even

  2253. more importantly

  2254. figuratively

  2255. is what

  2256. Jesus

  2257. came to

  2258. earth

  2259. to do

  2260. in Luke

    Luke 6:39

  2261. chapter 6

  2262. verse 39

  2263. he uses a

  2264. parable of

  2265. blindness

  2266. can a blind

  2267. man lead

  2268. a blind

  2269. man

  2270. will they

  2271. not both

  2272. fall into a

  2273. pit

  2274. a disciple

  2275. is not

  2276. above his

  2277. teacher

  2278. but everyone

  2279. when he is

  2280. fully trained

  2281. will be

  2282. like his

  2283. teacher

  2284. verse

  2285. chapter 8

  2286. verse 10

  2287. Jesus spoke

  2288. of those

  2289. people

  2290. who are

  2291. seeing

  2292. yet do

  2293. not see

  2294. the truth

  2295. and this

  2296. recurring theme

  2297. of Jesus

  2298. leading his

  2299. blind

  2300. disciples

  2301. to see

  2302. comes to

  2303. a climax

  2304. in this

  2305. chapter

  2306. in the

  2307. road to

  2308. Emmaus

  2309. when their

  2310. eyes are

  2311. finally

  2312. opened

  2313. and this

  2314. opening of

  2315. eyes

  2316. in the

  2317. breaking

  2318. of bread

  2319. is a

  2320. wonderful

  2321. reversal

  2322. of what

  2323. happened

  2324. in the

  2325. fall

  2326. Genesis

    Genesis 3:6–7

  2327. chapter 3

  2328. verses 6

  2329. to 7

  2330. it says

  2331. that Eve

  2332. took

  2333. of the

  2334. fruit of

  2335. the tree

  2336. of knowledge

  2337. of good

  2338. and evil

  2339. and ate

  2340. she also

  2341. gave some

  2342. to her

  2343. husband

  2344. who was

  2345. with her

  2346. and he

  2347. ate

  2348. then the

  2349. eyes

  2350. of both

  2351. were opened

  2352. and they

  2353. knew

  2354. that they

  2355. were

  2356. naked

  2357. notice

  2358. all the

  2359. verbal

  2360. perils

  2361. take

  2362. give

  2363. eat

  2364. eyes

  2365. opened

  2366. at the

  2367. fall

  2368. when the

  2369. first man

  2370. and woman

  2371. disobeyed

  2372. God

  2373. and took

  2374. and ate

  2375. and gave

  2376. from the

  2377. forbidden

  2378. tree

  2379. their eyes

  2380. were open

  2381. to sin

  2382. their eyes

  2383. were open

  2384. to their

  2385. nakedness

  2386. and shame

  2387. their eyes

  2388. were open

  2389. to death

  2390. and in

  2391. the new

  2392. covenant

  2393. Christ

  2394. takes

  2395. and gives

  2396. us to

  2397. eat

  2398. the bread

  2399. which

  2400. represents

  2401. his body

  2402. that hung

  2403. on the

  2404. tree

  2405. of the

  2406. cross

  2407. the fruit

  2408. that he

  2409. takes

  2410. from that

  2411. tree

  2412. and gives

  2413. to us

  2414. is his

  2415. own body

  2416. and when we

  2417. eat of it

  2418. our eyes

  2419. are open

  2420. again to

  2421. his glory

  2422. our eyes

  2423. are open

  2424. to eternal

  2425. life

  2426. and as

  2427. if to

  2428. say

  2429. that as

  2430. long as

  2431. our

  2432. spiritual

  2433. eyes

  2434. are open

  2435. as long

  2436. as the

  2437. eyes of

  2438. our hearts

  2439. are open

  2440. seeing

  2441. Jesus

  2442. physically

  2443. is not

  2444. necessary

  2445. right after

  2446. that opening

  2447. of their

  2448. eyes

  2449. he says

  2450. Jesus

  2451. vanished

  2452. from

  2453. their

  2454. sight

  2455. Jesus

  2456. resurrection

  2457. body

  2458. is obviously

  2459. no longer

  2460. subject to

  2461. physical

  2462. limitations

  2463. as soon

  2464. as the

  2465. disciples

  2466. see with

  2467. faith

  2468. they do

  2469. not need

  2470. to see

  2471. with eyes

  2472. and that

  2473. should be

  2474. encouragement

  2475. to us

  2476. because we

  2477. don't get

  2478. to see

  2479. Jesus

  2480. physically

  2481. this is

  2482. Luke's

  2483. encouragement

  2484. to us

  2485. without

  2486. seeing

  2487. you can

  2488. see

  2489. you can

  2490. believe

  2491. God

  2492. opens the

  2493. eyes of

  2494. our hearts

  2495. so that we

  2496. understand his

  2497. word and

  2498. believe in

  2499. Christ the

  2500. redeemer

  2501. and this

  2502. reality should

  2503. drive us to

  2504. our knees

  2505. it should

  2506. lead us to

  2507. prayer

  2508. when you

  2509. realize that

  2510. you are

  2511. absolutely

  2512. powerless

  2513. to save

  2514. that family

  2515. member

  2516. that neighbor

  2517. that friend

  2518. that you

  2519. love dearly

  2520. when you

  2521. realize really

  2522. that you

  2523. cannot save

  2524. that person

  2525. you can't

  2526. help but

  2527. pray

  2528. it drives

  2529. you to

  2530. your

  2531. knees

  2532. sovereign

  2533. God

  2534. open

  2535. their

  2536. eyes

  2537. so that

  2538. they

  2539. might

  2540. see

  2541. so that

  2542. they

  2543. might

  2544. know

  2545. you

  2546. and

  2547. believe

  2548. in

  2549. you

  2550. this

  2551. is why

  2552. apostle

  2553. Paul

  2554. prays

  2555. this way

  2556. Ephesians

  2557. 1

  2558. 17

  2559. to

  2560. 19

  2561. that

  2562. the

  2563. God

  2564. of

  2565. our

  2566. Lord

  2567. Jesus

  2568. Christ

  2569. the

  2570. father

  2571. of

  2572. glory

  2573. may

  2574. give

  2575. you

  2576. the

  2577. spirit

  2578. of

  2579. wisdom

  2580. and

  2581. of

  2582. revelation

  2583. in

  2584. the

  2585. knowledge

  2586. of

  2587. him

  2588. having

  2589. the

  2590. eyes

  2591. of

  2592. your

  2593. hearts

  2594. enlightened

  2595. that

  2596. you

  2597. may

  2598. know

  2599. what

  2600. is

  2601. the

  2602. hope

  2603. to

  2604. which

  2605. he

  2606. has

  2607. called

  2608. you

  2609. what

  2610. are

  2611. the

  2612. riches

  2613. of

  2614. his

  2615. glorious

  2616. inheritance

  2617. in

  2618. the

  2619. saints

  2620. and

  2621. what

  2622. is

  2623. the

  2624. immeasurable

  2625. greatness

  2626. of

  2627. his

  2628. power

  2629. toward

  2630. us

  2631. who

  2632. believe

  2633. that

  2634. immeasurable

  2635. greatness

  2636. of

  2637. his

  2638. power

  2639. that

  2640. glorious

  2641. inheritance

  2642. that

  2643. we

  2644. as

  2645. believers

  2646. have

  2647. experienced

  2648. we

  2649. have

  2650. not

  2651. come

  2652. to

  2653. that

  2654. experience

  2655. because

  2656. of

  2657. our

  2658. own

  2659. abilities

  2660. God

  2661. has

  2662. revealed

  2663. that

  2664. to

  2665. us

  2666. the

  2667. spirit

  2668. has

  2669. opened

  2670. the

  2671. eyes

  2672. of

  2673. our

  2674. hearts

  2675. and

  2676. that

  2677. should

  2678. be

  2679. our

  2680. prayer

  2681. for

  2682. our

  2683. loved

  2684. ones

  2685. every

  2686. day

  2687. because

  2688. unless

  2689. God

  2690. himself

  2691. illuminates

  2692. the

  2693. eyes

  2694. of

  2695. our

  2696. hearts

  2697. no

  2698. person

  2699. can

  2700. see

  2701. this

  2702. should

  2703. also

  2704. make

  2705. us

  2706. cherish

  2707. and

  2708. prioritize

  2709. the

  2710. corporate

  2711. worship

  2712. of the

  2713. church

  2714. the

  2715. means

  2716. of

  2717. grace

  2718. that

  2719. God

  2720. has

  2721. given

  2722. us

  2723. if

  2724. you

  2725. are

  2726. lacking

  2727. in

  2728. faith

  2729. and

  2730. zeal

  2731. this

  2732. morning

  2733. I

  2734. exhorted

  2735. to

  2736. open

  2737. up

  2738. God's

  2739. scriptures

  2740. ask him

  2741. to speak

  2742. to you

  2743. and give

  2744. you

  2745. understanding

  2746. listen

  2747. to the

  2748. reading

  2749. and

  2750. preaching

  2751. of

  2752. God's

  2753. word

  2754. avidly

  2755. and

  2756. prayerfully

  2757. on

  2758. Sunday

  2759. mornings

  2760. partake

  2761. in the

  2762. breaking

  2763. of

  2764. bread

  2765. and

  2766. the

  2767. fellowship

  2768. of

  2769. believers

  2770. in the

  2771. local

  2772. church

  2773. these

  2774. are

  2775. means

  2776. of

  2777. grace

  2778. that

  2779. God

  2780. has

  2781. furnished

  2782. his

  2783. people

  2784. with

  2785. these

  2786. are

  2787. the

  2788. means

  2789. by

  2790. which

  2791. God

  2792. conveys

  2793. his

  2794. saving

  2795. grace

  2796. to

  2797. us

  2798. these

  2799. are

  2800. not

  2801. optional

  2802. for

  2803. the

  2804. spiritual

  2805. flourishing

  2806. of

  2807. God's

  2808. people

  2809. that's

  2810. why

  2811. Hebrews

  2812. 10

  2813. 24

  2814. 25

  2815. says

  2816. let

  2817. us

  2818. consider

  2819. how

  2820. to

  2821. stir

  2822. up

  2823. one

  2824. another

  2825. to

  2826. love

  2827. and

  2828. good

  2829. works

  2830. not

  2831. neglecting

  2832. to

  2833. meet

  2834. together

  2835. as

  2836. is

  2837. the

  2838. habit

  2839. of

  2840. some

  2841. but

  2842. encouraging

  2843. one

  2844. another

  2845. all the

  2846. more

  2847. as you

  2848. see

  2849. the

  2850. day

  2851. drawing

  2852. near

  2853. that

  2854. day

  2855. of

  2856. Christ's

  2857. return

  2858. of

  2859. our

  2860. full

  2861. redemption

  2862. of

  2863. our

  2864. of

  2865. the

  2866. consummation

  2867. of

  2868. our

  2869. union

  2870. with

  2871. Christ

  2872. that

  2873. day

  2874. that

  2875. we

  2876. look

  2877. forward

  2878. to

  2879. every

  2880. day

  2881. of

  2882. our

  2883. lives

  2884. that

  2885. day

  2886. is

  2887. coming

  2888. and

  2889. when

  2890. that

  2891. day

  2892. comes

  2893. our

  2894. faith

  2895. will

  2896. turn

  2897. to

  2898. sight

  2899. we

  2900. will

  2901. see

  2902. everything

  2903. but

  2904. until

  2905. then

  2906. we

  2907. must

  2908. see

  2909. with

  2910. faith

  2911. and

  2912. in

  2913. order

  2914. to

  2915. do

  2916. that

  2917. we

  2918. need

  2919. each

  2920. other

  2921. to

  2922. remind

  2923. each

  2924. other

  2925. to

  2926. exhort

  2927. each

  2928. other

  2929. because

  2930. there's

  2931. no

  2932. eternal

  2933. life

  2934. apart

  2935. from

  2936. it

  2937. please

  2938. take a

  2939. moment to

  2940. reflect on

  2941. that

  2942. truth

  2943. and

  2944. afterward

  2945. we will

  2946. respond

  2947. by

  2948. praying

  2949. out

  2950. loud

  2951. together

  2952. as

  2953. a

  2954. church

  2955. happy

  2956. ever

  2957. we

  2958. do

  2959. this

  2960. it

  2961. for

  2962. the

  2963. us

  2964. have

  2965. to
