  1. We're taking a short hiatus from our sermon series in the Book of Proverbs,

  2. you know, to do a six-week sermon series through 1 John, John's first letter.

  3. We decided to do this for a number of reasons in light of what is happening with COVID-19,

  4. and since we have been displaced from our usual meeting space,

  5. it's a great opportunity for us to hone in on some of the fundamentals of the Christian faith

  6. and discipleship in a more intimate setting.

  7. The aim of 1 John is to reassure us in our faith by reaffirming the person and work of Jesus Christ, the gospel,

  8. and by emphasizing the importance of Christian obedience and love.

  9. And so this series lines up really well with the upcoming Holy Week as well, with Easter and Good Friday.

  10. And 1 John is one of the three letters in the Bible authored by Apostle John,

  11. and the letters are known as the Johannine Epistles.

  12. And specific and explicit personal references and historical references scattered throughout the letter

  13. suggest that this is a letter, but it's missing some of the usual characteristics of a letter,

  14. like an opening salutation or a closing remark.

  15. And that atypical structure suggests that maybe this was intended to be a general letter

  16. that would be circulated among the churches in Asia Minor, modern-day Turkey.

  17. And this was probably written in the late first century after Apostle John wrote the Gospel of John.

  18. And the situation on the ground is that there were some false teachers

  19. that were denying that Christ had come in the flesh,

  20. and their theology promoted sinful living.

  21. It condoned sinful living because they denied that as people who had true knowledge of God

  22. that they could be affected by sin, as we'll see in chapter 1.

  23. These false teachers were dividing the church,

  24. and some Christians had already seceded from the church, separated from the church.

  25. And so Apostle John is addressing some of these issues.

  26. So turn with me to 1 John.

  27. And before I proceed, I'm going to pray for us,

  28. for the reading and preaching of God's Word.

  29. Heavenly Father, we are so grateful to be able to gather in Your name,

  30. in Your presence.

  31. Lord, we long to be with those who are not able to be here.

  32. We pray, Lord, that You would curb the spread of this virus,

  33. that You would protect our loved ones, our church family,

  34. that You would guard our city,

  35. so that soon we'll be able to gather all again face to face.

  36. Oh, Lord, minister to us.

  37. Speak to us from Your Word.

  38. Lord, build us up as Your people.

  39. Fill us with Your Holy Spirit.

  40. Impress upon us deeply the good news of Jesus Christ.

  41. In Jesus' name we pray.

  42. Amen.

  43. Amen.

  44. 1 John chapter 1.

    1 John 1 chapter mention

  45. We'll go to chapter 2, verse 2.

  46. That which was from the beginning,

  47. which we have heard,

  48. which we have seen with our eyes,

  49. which we looked upon and have touched with our hands,

  50. concerning the Word of Life.

  51. The life was made manifest,

  52. and we have seen it,

  53. and testified to it,

  54. and proclaimed to You the eternal life,

  55. which was with the Father,

  56. and was made manifest to us.

  57. That which we have seen and heard,

  58. we proclaim also to You,

  59. so that You too may have fellowship with us.

  60. And indeed,

  61. our fellowship is with the Father,

  62. and with His Son, Jesus Christ.

  63. And we are writing these things,

  64. so that our joy may be complete.

  65. This is the message we have heard from Him,

  66. and proclaimed to you,

  67. that God is light,

  68. and in Him is no darkness at all.

  69. If we say we have fellowship with Him,

  70. while we walk in darkness,

  71. we lie and do not practice the truth.

  72. But if we walk in the light,

  73. as He is in the light,

  74. we have fellowship with one another,

  75. and the blood of Jesus, His Son,

  76. cleanses us from all sin.

  77. If we say we have no sin,

  78. we deceive ourselves,

  79. and the truth is not in us.

  80. If we confess our sins,

  81. He is faithful and just,

  82. to forgive us our sins,

  83. and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

  84. If we say we have not sinned,

  85. we make Him a liar,

  86. and His Word is not in us.

  87. My little children,

  88. I am writing these things to you,

  89. so that you may not sin.

  90. But if anyone does sin,

  91. we have an advocate with the Father,

  92. Jesus Christ, the righteous.

  93. He is the propitiation for our sins,

  94. and not for us only,

  95. but also for the sins of the whole world.

  96. This is God's holy and authoritative Word.

  97. Apostle John begins this letter

  98. in much the same way

  99. that he begins his Gospel.

  100. He says,

  101. That which was from the beginning,

  102. you'll probably know in John's Gospel,

  103. it begins,

  104. In the beginning was the Word,

  105. and the Word was with God,

  106. and the Word was God.

  107. And that, of course,

  108. is echoing Genesis 1, verse 1,

    Genesis 1:1

  109. with the first book of the Bible,

  110. which says,

  111. In the beginning,

  112. God created the heavens and the earth.

  113. So, Genesis 1, 1 says,

  114. In the beginning, God.

  115. And then John 1, 1 says,

  116. In the beginning, Word.

  117. So, John's making the point

  118. that before anything else existed,

  119. God was there,

  120. and with God,

  121. the Word of God was there,

  122. by which He created the world.

  123. And there was never a time

  124. when the Word of God didn't exist.

  125. And in John 1, verse 14,

    John 1:14

  126. Apostle John made a shocking statement.

  127. He said,

  128. And the Word became flesh

  129. and dwelt among us.

  130. And we have seen His glory,

  131. glory as of the only Son from the Father,

  132. full of grace and truth.

  133. So, John told us there in his Gospel

  134. that the Word,

  135. the pre-existent,

  136. the Word became incarnated.

  137. He took on human flesh

  138. and lived among us,

  139. and that this incarnate Word

  140. is Jesus Christ,

  141. the Son of God,

  142. the second person of the Trinity.

  143. And John's making that same

  144. shocking theological statement

  145. in a slightly different manner

  146. in the beginning of this letter.

  147. He says,

  148. That which was from the beginning,

  149. God was in the beginning.

  150. That which was from the beginning,

  151. which we have heard.

  152. This implies that

  153. that which was from the beginning

  154. was a message.

  155. It was the Word.

  156. Something you can hear.

  157. But then he continues in verse 1,

  158. Which we have seen with our eyes.

  159. Which we looked upon

  160. and have touched with our hands

  161. concerning the Word of life.

  162. So somehow,

  163. this Word of life,

  164. the message that we can hear,

  165. the Word by which God created the world,

  166. can be seen and touched.

  167. He's talking about Jesus' incarnation.

  168. It was made manifest physically

  169. and took on flesh.

  170. And this is really a shocking truth

  171. if you think about it,

  172. because the creator of the world

  173. became part of his creation.

  174. It's like the author of a book

  175. becoming a character in the book.

  176. It's maybe like Stan Lee

  177. appearing in Marvel films.

  178. Except he doesn't appear as a cameo.

  179. Jesus appears as the main protagonist

  180. of human history.

  181. And the creator who created it all

  182. became part of human history.

  183. And verse 2 continues,

  184. The life was made manifest

  185. and we have seen it

  186. and testified to it

  187. and proclaimed to you

  188. the eternal life

  189. which was with the Father

  190. and was made manifest to us.

  191. So John's proclaiming

  192. the message of salvation,

  193. the offer of eternal life.

  194. And this eternal life

  195. is not an abstract,

  196. impersonal thing,

  197. but it's a person.

  198. It's the word of life

  199. who was with the Father

  200. and was made manifest to us.

  201. That's why eternal life

  202. is found in the Son of God.

  203. John 3.16, as you know,

  204. For God so loved the world

  205. that He gave His only Son

  206. that whoever believes in Him

  207. should not perish

  208. but have eternal life.

  209. And John, along with Jesus'

  210. many disciples,

  211. personally, with His own eyes,

  212. witnessed this word of life.

  213. They saw Him with their own eyes

  214. and touched Him with their own hands.

  215. And note the repetition of words

  216. that pertain to eyewitnesses.

  217. Three times John says,

  218. We have seen the word of life.

  219. In other parts of the letter,

  220. when referring to himself

  221. as the author of the letter,

  222. John regularly uses

  223. the first person singular pronouns.

  224. I, my.

  225. But here, when he's writing

  226. about having been eyewitnesses

  227. of Jesus,

  228. he refers to himself

  229. in the first person plural,

  230. the we.

  231. And that's intentional

  232. because he's communicating to us

  233. that he was not a lone witness.

  234. The person and work of Jesus Christ

  235. that he's proclaiming

  236. now to his audience

  237. and through this letter to us

  238. now is authoritative.

  239. It's the authoritative apostolic message.

  240. Has the backing of all the apostles

  241. of Jesus Christ

  242. who witnessed Him behind it.

  243. It's the unified testimony

  244. of all people

  245. who witnessed personally

  246. the life, death, and resurrection,

  247. and ascension of Jesus.

  248. And John tells us

  249. his purpose is for writing

  250. in verses 3 to 4,

  251. So that you too

  252. may have fellowship with us.

  253. And indeed,

  254. our fellowship

  255. is with the Father

  256. and with His Son,

  257. Jesus Christ.

  258. And we are writing these things

  259. so that our joy

  260. may be complete.

  261. The first purpose

  262. is fellowship.

  263. So that you too

  264. may have fellowship with us.

  265. Keeping in mind

  266. that some have already

  267. strayed from the apostolic faith

  268. and have separated themselves

  269. from the church,

  270. this first century church,

  271. John wants to ensure

  272. that those who remain

  273. will persevere in faith

  274. and continue in fellowship

  275. with them.

  276. And the word fellowship

  277. means a little more

  278. than, you know,

  279. time for snacks

  280. or chit-chat

  281. in some church circles,

  282. right?

  283. The way we think about it.

  284. Fellowship time

  285. or fellowship hall.

  286. It's the place

  287. for refreshments.

  288. But it means

  289. so much more than that.

  290. Scripturally speaking,

  291. the word fellowship

  292. refers to how people

  293. are bound together

  294. relationally

  295. around the common cause

  296. or a mission.

  297. How we're bound together

  298. relationally

  299. around the common cause

  300. or a mission.

  301. It's similar to how

  302. in the Lord of the Rings

  303. trilogy,

  304. in the film trilogy,

  305. when the fellowship

  306. of the ring

  307. is formed.

  308. It's called the fellowship,

  309. right?

  310. And people come together

  311. to destroy

  312. Dark Lord Sauron's

  313. one ring

  314. to save Middle-earth

  315. and representatives

  316. from all the races

  317. gather,

  318. hobbits,

  319. man,

  320. elf,

  321. dwarf,

  322. and wizard.

  323. And they all swear

  324. to bond together

  325. as a brotherhood

  326. in order to fulfill

  327. this mission.

  328. Aragorn says,

  329. to Frodo,

  330. right?

  331. If by my life

  332. or death

  333. I can protect you,

  334. I will.

  335. You have my sword.

  336. And Legolas says,

  337. you have my bow.

  338. And Gimli says,

  339. and my axe.

  340. The fellowship

  341. of the saints,

  342. likewise,

  343. is a binding relationship

  344. formed around

  345. a common bond,

  346. a common mission,

  347. God-given mission.

  348. and church membership

  349. that is not like

  350. a gym membership

  351. or a club membership

  352. that you use

  353. at your convenience

  354. and leave

  355. when you don't feel like it.

  356. it's a fellowship.

  357. And amazingly,

  358. this fellowship

  359. with us,

  360. John says,

  361. is fellowship

  362. with the Father

  363. and with His Son,

  364. Jesus Christ.

  365. Jesus is described

  366. here as the Son of God.

  367. Apostle Paul uses

  368. the word Son

  369. to refer to

  370. our Sonship,

  371. our adoption

  372. as sons

  373. to God,

  374. the Father as well.

  375. But Apostle John

  376. never uses

  377. the word Son

  378. that way.

  379. He never uses

  380. the Son

  381. to refer to

  382. children of God.

  383. That's the expression

  384. he prefers

  385. to refer to

  386. God's people,

  387. children of God.

  388. Only time he uses

  389. the word Son

  390. is in reference

  391. to Jesus

  392. because He is

  393. the unique Son.

  394. He is the only

  395. begotten Son.

  396. He is the only Son

  397. that shares

  398. the divine nature

  399. of God,

  400. His Father.

  401. And He is the Son of God

  402. and this Jesus

  403. is the Christ.

  404. And Christ means

  405. His Anointed One,

  406. the Messiah,

  407. the promised Savior King

  408. of God's people.

  409. And so that's the first purpose

  410. in John's writing

  411. so that

  412. you too may have

  413. fellowship with us

  414. and indeed

  415. our fellowship

  416. is with the Father

  417. and with the Son

  418. Jesus Christ.

  419. That's a powerful

  420. statement.

  421. Remember again

  422. the context of the letter.

  423. Some people have already

  424. seceded from the church.

  425. And John is saying here

  426. that the only way

  427. you have fellowship

  428. with God

  429. is by having fellowship

  430. with us.

  431. Those who proclaim

  432. the word of life.

  433. No one

  434. apart from

  435. the fellowship

  436. of people

  437. who hold fast

  438. to the apostolic faith

  439. in Jesus Christ

  440. can say

  441. to those who secede

  442. from it

  443. that they have

  444. fellowship with God.

  445. It's only the local churches

  446. that hold fast

  447. to this historic

  448. apostolic faith

  449. that can say

  450. to people

  451. who secede from it

  452. there is no fellowship

  453. with God

  454. apart from fellowship

  455. with us.

  456. Because we are

  457. in fellowship

  458. with God

  459. to be in fellowship

  460. with God

  461. is to be in fellowship

  462. with us.

  463. Just as a person

  464. cannot be united

  465. to Christ

  466. our head

  467. without being united

  468. to the church

  469. which is the body

  470. of Christ

  471. a person cannot

  472. be married

  473. to Christ

  474. our bridegroom

  475. without being part

  476. of the church

  477. which is the bride

  478. of Christ.

  479. And this is why

  480. it's inconsistent

  481. and unbiblical

  482. for people to say

  483. I'm a Christian

  484. but I'm not a member

  485. of any church.

  486. I have a relationship

  487. with Christ

  488. but I don't really

  489. have relationships

  490. with Christians.

  491. I've committed

  492. my life to Christ

  493. but I refuse

  494. to commit myself

  495. to a church.

  496. That kind of thinking

  497. is completely

  498. foreign to scripture.

  499. So the first purpose

  500. in John's writing

  501. is that people

  502. might have

  503. fellowship with Christ

  504. and His church

  505. and that's why

  506. this gathering

  507. is so precious.

  508. This is the fellowship

  509. with God.

  510. Apart from which

  511. there is no

  512. fellowship with God.

  513. That's how significant

  514. the church is

  515. in the way God

  516. views it.

  517. And the second purpose

  518. is given in verse 4

  519. and we are writing

  520. these things

  521. so that our joy

  522. may be complete.

  523. John feels

  524. such love

  525. and sense of responsibility

  526. for the churches

  527. to whom he is writing

  528. that apart from them

  529. continuing

  530. in this fellowship

  531. with him.

  532. His joy

  533. would be incomplete.

  534. He longs for them

  535. to remain in fellowship,

  536. stay with us,

  537. worship with us,

  538. love one another.

  539. Only then

  540. will my joy

  541. be complete.

  542. Likewise,

  543. we too should long

  544. for this completion

  545. of joy

  546. that every single

  547. one of our church members

  548. would continue

  549. in faith,

  550. persevere in faith,

  551. that we might

  552. earnestly pray

  553. for one another

  554. to maintain

  555. this fellowship

  556. of the saints

  557. so that we might

  558. last till the end

  559. and that our joy

  560. might be complete.

  561. And so having spoken

  562. of the word of life

  563. in verses 1 to 4,

  564. John speaks

  565. of the God of light

  566. in verses 5

  567. and following.

  568. He says in verse 5,

  569. this is the message

  570. we have heard from him

  571. and proclaimed to you

  572. that God is light

  573. and in him

  574. is no darkness

  575. at all.

  576. In the preceding verses,

  577. John said he is an eyewitness

  578. and a herald

  579. of the word of life.

  580. Now he defines

  581. the content

  582. of the message

  583. that he is proclaiming.

  584. And this is the message

  585. that God is light

  586. and in him

  587. is no darkness

  588. at all.

  589. Many people

  590. have speculated

  591. about the metaphysical

  592. nature of God

  593. but that's not

  594. what John is after

  595. when he says

  596. God is light.

  597. The following verses

  598. show that John

  599. is concerned here

  600. not with the

  601. metaphysical nature

  602. of God

  603. but with the

  604. moral character

  605. of God.

  606. God is light.

  607. That means there is

  608. no darkness

  609. in him at all.

  610. That's phrased

  611. in an intentionally

  612. emphatic

  613. and categorical way.

  614. There is no darkness

  615. in him,

  616. nothing at all.

  617. Habakkuk chapter 1

    Habakkuk 1:13

  618. verse 13 says

  619. of God,

  620. you who are

  621. of purer eyes

  622. than to see evil

  623. and cannot

  624. look at wrong.

  625. James 1.13

  626. says God cannot

  627. be tempted

  628. with evil

  629. and he himself

  630. tempts no one.

  631. There is no darkness

  632. in God

  633. and God cannot

  634. sin.

  635. He can do

  636. no evil.

  637. God cannot

  638. lie.

  639. It's such a

  640. simple truth

  641. but it has

  642. far-reaching

  643. implications

  644. if we really

  645. believe it

  646. and live with it

  647. in mind

  648. because that means

  649. God has never

  650. done a single

  651. one of us

  652. any wrong.

  653. God is not

  654. doing anything

  655. evil or wrong

  656. even in what's

  657. happening right now

  658. with the COVID-19.

  659. All the suffering

  660. in your life,

  661. all the tragedies

  662. in your life,

  663. all the difficulties

  664. and disappointments

  665. in your life,

  666. they were not

  667. evil from God.

  668. We might not

  669. be able to see

  670. God's providence

  671. with the naked eye

  672. but we have to

  673. look with eyes

  674. of faith

  675. to believe

  676. that God is light

  677. and in Him

  678. is no darkness

  679. at all.

  680. And another

  681. implication of the

  682. reality that God

  683. is light is that

  684. those who have

  685. fellowship with

  686. God who is light

  687. cannot walk

  688. in darkness.

  689. You can't carry

  690. a flashlight

  691. with you

  692. and expect

  693. to find darkness

  694. because it's

  695. going to light up

  696. wherever you go.

  697. Likewise,

  698. no Christian

  699. persists

  700. in unrepentant

  701. sin

  702. because to do

  703. so is to prove

  704. that one does not

  705. have fellowship

  706. with God

  707. only those

  708. who walk

  709. in the light

  710. of God

  711. partake in

  712. the fellowship

  713. between God

  714. and His people.

  715. In the following

  716. verses,

  717. John fleshes out

  718. the practical

  719. implications

  720. of this theological

  721. truth by using

  722. a series of

  723. conditional statements.

  724. He mentions

  725. three false

  726. claims that

  727. the false

  728. teachers were

  729. teaching

  730. and after

  731. mentioning each

  732. one,

  733. he counters

  734. them with

  735. the application

  736. of the truth

  737. that God

  738. is light.

  739. First one we see

  740. in verse 6,

  741. if we say

  742. we have

  743. fellowship

  744. with Him

  745. while we

  746. walk in

  747. darkness,

  748. we lie

  749. and do not

  750. practice

  751. the truth.

  752. If we claim

  753. to know God,

  754. to possess

  755. the word of

  756. life,

  757. and yet

  758. simultaneously

  759. walk in

  760. darkness,

  761. we are

  762. guilty of

  763. two offenses.

  764. First,

  765. we lie.

  766. We are

  767. hypocrites

  768. who lie

  769. about the

  770. fact that

  771. we have

  772. fellowship

  773. with God

  774. when we

  775. actually

  776. don't.

  777. Since

  778. there is

  779. no darkness

  780. in God

  781. at all,

  782. those who

  783. walk in

  784. the darkness

  785. cannot

  786. possibly

  787. have

  788. fellowship

  789. with God.

  790. And notice

  791. how Apostle

  792. John doesn't

  793. say demurely,

  794. well,

  795. I don't know

  796. what's going

  797. on in their

  798. hearts,

  799. whether they

  800. have real

  801. faith or

  802. not,

  803. that's between

  804. them and

  805. God.

  806. No,

  807. he doesn't

  808. say that.

  809. He says

  810. unapologetically

  811. and assuredly

  812. that those

  813. who say

  814. that they

  815. have fellowship

  816. with God

  817. while walking

  818. in darkness

  819. are lying

  820. because you

  821. cannot do

  822. that.

  823. It is

  824. impossible

  825. for you

  826. to do

  827. that

  828. while you

  829. are walking

  830. in fellowship

  831. with God.

  832. Either

  833. they're lying

  834. or God

  835. is and

  836. God

  837. cannot

  838. lie.

  839. By no

  840. means

  841. let God

  842. be true

  843. though everyone

  844. were a liar.

  845. Romans

    Romans 3:4

  846. chapter 3

  847. verse 4.

  848. That's the

  849. first offense

  850. that we

  851. lie.

  852. The second

  853. offense in

  854. making such

  855. a claim

  856. is this,

  857. that we

  858. do not

  859. practice the

  860. truth.

  861. This isn't

  862. speaking merely

  863. of not

  864. telling the

  865. truth.

  866. The phrase

  867. practice the

  868. truth is

  869. also used

  870. in the

  871. gospel of

  872. chapter 3

  873. verses 19

  874. to 21.

  875. And it

  876. says,

  877. And this

  878. is the

  879. judgment.

  880. The light

  881. has come

  882. into the

  883. world and

  884. people love

  885. the darkness

  886. rather than

  887. the light

  888. because their

  889. works were

  890. evil.

  891. For

  892. everyone who

  893. does wicked

  894. things hates

  895. the light

  896. and does

  897. not come

  898. to the

  899. light,

  900. lest his

  901. works should

  902. be exposed.

  903. But whoever

  904. does what

  905. is true

  906. comes to

  907. the light

  908. so that

  909. it may

  910. be clearly

  911. seen that

  912. his works

  913. have been

  914. carried out

  915. in God.

  916. So the

  917. phrase

  918. does what

  919. is true

  920. is exactly

  921. the same

  922. phrase as

  923. practice the

  924. truth in

  925. 1 John.

  926. And those

  927. phrases are

  928. contrasted in

  929. John chapter

    John 3 chapter mention

  930. 3 with

  931. doing wicked

  932. things.

  933. So to

  934. not practice

  935. the truth,

  936. not practice

  937. the truth,

  938. to not do

  939. the truth,

  940. is to fail

  941. to live

  942. in accordance

  943. with the

  944. truth.

  945. It means

  946. to violate

  947. the truth

  948. by sinning.

  949. And then

  950. in verse

  951. 7 John

  952. counters this

  953. false conditional

  954. statement with

  955. the true

  956. one.

  957. But if

  958. we walk

  959. in the

  960. light as

  961. he is

  962. in the

  963. light,

  964. we have

  965. fellowship

  966. with one

  967. another and

  968. the blood

  969. of Jesus

  970. his son

  971. cleanses

  972. us from

  973. all sin.

  974. In verse

  975. 6 John

  976. said that

  977. those who

  978. walk in

  979. darkness

  980. do not

  981. have fellowship

  982. with God.

  983. So you'd

  984. expect him

  985. here in

  986. verse 7

  987. to say

  988. that those

  989. who walk

  990. in the

  991. light

  992. will have

  993. fellowship

  994. with God.

  995. But instead

  996. he says

  997. that those

  998. who walk

  999. in the

  1000. light

  1001. have

  1002. fellowship

  1003. with

  1004. one

  1005. another.

  1006. Again,

  1007. that reiterates

  1008. what John

  1009. said earlier,

  1010. namely,

  1011. that true

  1012. fellowship

  1013. with God

  1014. is always

  1015. expressed

  1016. in fellowship

  1017. with one

  1018. another,

  1019. with God's

  1020. people.

  1021. But what

  1022. does it mean

  1023. to walk

  1024. in the

  1025. light?

  1026. This

  1027. verse is

  1028. also

  1029. informed

  1030. by the

  1031. passage

  1032. from

  1033. John

  1034. 3

  1035. I

  1036. read

  1037. earlier.

  1038. In that

  1039. passage,

  1040. to come

  1041. to the

  1042. light

  1043. or to

  1044. walk

  1045. in the

  1046. light

  1047. means to

  1048. receive

  1049. the

  1050. person

  1051. and

  1052. work

  1053. of

  1054. Jesus

  1055. Christ,

  1056. to

  1057. believe

  1058. in the

  1059. gospel

  1060. of

  1061. Jesus

  1062. Christ.

  1063. It's

  1064. the

  1065. opposite

  1066. of

  1067. remaining

  1068. in

  1069. darkness

  1070. in

  1071. order

  1072. to

  1073. hide

  1074. one's

  1075. sin.

  1076. To

  1077. walk

  1078. in the

  1079. light

  1080. therefore

  1081. is to

  1082. bring

  1083. the

  1084. light

  1085. of

  1086. God

  1087. to

  1088. bear

  1089. upon

  1090. our

  1091. own

  1092. sins

  1093. so

  1094. renounced.

  1095. I think

  1096. I've told

  1097. the story

  1098. to some

  1099. of you.

  1100. When I

  1101. was in

  1102. college,

  1103. I led

  1104. an

  1105. investigative

  1106. Bible

  1107. study

  1108. for some

  1109. non-Christian

  1110. friends.

  1111. I had

  1112. a friend

  1113. who would

  1114. consistently

  1115. come to

  1116. every

  1117. Bible

  1118. study

  1119. and

  1120. then

  1121. stay

  1122. long

  1123. after

  1124. to have

  1125. some

  1126. intense

  1127. debates,

  1128. philosophical

  1129. debates,

  1130. theological

  1131. debates.

  1132. I would

  1133. reason with

  1134. him and

  1135. plead with

  1136. him for

  1137. hours.

  1138. And one

  1139. day,

  1140. I thought

  1141. maybe one

  1142. day he'll

  1143. come to

  1144. faith,

  1145. but after

  1146. one of

  1147. these long

  1148. debates,

  1149. my friend

  1150. said to

  1151. me,

  1152. Sean,

  1153. I understand

  1154. what you're

  1155. saying and

  1156. understand all

  1157. the Christian

  1158. arguments,

  1159. but the

  1160. crux of the

  1161. matter is

  1162. this,

  1163. I like

  1164. girls and

  1165. I like

  1166. sleeping

  1167. around with

  1168. them.

  1169. And if I

  1170. become a

  1171. Christian,

  1172. I have to

  1173. stop doing

  1174. that and

  1175. I am

  1176. not about

  1177. to do

  1178. that.

  1179. I was

  1180. speechless.

  1181. Because he's

  1182. so brutally

  1183. honest.

  1184. But that's

  1185. actually more

  1186. honest than

  1187. a lot of

  1188. people who

  1189. reject Christ.

  1190. Because according

  1191. to this

  1192. passage, at

  1193. the heart of

  1194. every rejection

  1195. of Christ is

  1196. a stubborn

  1197. refusal to

  1198. conform to

  1199. God's ways

  1200. and to

  1201. insist on

  1202. one's own

  1203. ways.

  1204. People reject

  1205. Christ because

  1206. they don't want

  1207. to renounce

  1208. their ways.

  1209. They don't

  1210. want to follow

  1211. Christ.

  1212. they don't

  1213. want to

  1214. bring their

  1215. lives into

  1216. the light

  1217. of Christ.

  1218. And we

  1219. see the

  1220. second false

  1221. claim made

  1222. by those

  1223. who have

  1224. succeeded from

  1225. the church

  1226. in verse

  1227. 8.

  1228. If we

  1229. say we

  1230. have no

  1231. sin,

  1232. we deceive

  1233. ourselves

  1234. and the

  1235. truth is

  1236. not in

  1237. us.

  1238. This is a

  1239. slight variation

  1240. of verse

  1241. 6.

  1242. Some people

  1243. claim that

  1244. they have

  1245. no sin,

  1246. meaning they

  1247. claim to

  1248. have not

  1249. sinned.

  1250. what they

  1251. probably mean

  1252. is that

  1253. they have

  1254. not sinned

  1255. since the

  1256. time they

  1257. came to

  1258. have this

  1259. so-called

  1260. knowledge of

  1261. the truth

  1262. or the

  1263. knowledge of

  1264. God they

  1265. claim to

  1266. have.

  1267. But to

  1268. claim such

  1269. things,

  1270. to say that

  1271. I have

  1272. not sinned,

  1273. I do not

  1274. sin,

  1275. is to deceive

  1276. ourselves,

  1277. it says.

  1278. It's to lie

  1279. to ourselves.

  1280. Those who

  1281. claim to have

  1282. fellowship with

  1283. God while

  1284. walking in

  1285. darkness

  1286. lie to

  1287. others.

  1288. Those who

  1289. say that they

  1290. have no sin

  1291. lie to

  1292. themselves.

  1293. Because no

  1294. one can

  1295. claim to

  1296. be without

  1297. sin,

  1298. without deceiving

  1299. themselves,

  1300. without either

  1301. minimizing or

  1302. masking sin,

  1303. or denying

  1304. sin altogether,

  1305. that sin

  1306. is sin.

  1307. For example,

  1308. people commit

  1309. fornication and

  1310. adultery,

  1311. and then they

  1312. say that it's

  1313. true love.

  1314. People live

  1315. selfishly,

  1316. in a self-centered

  1317. way,

  1318. and then they

  1319. say that

  1320. that's self-care.

  1321. People abuse

  1322. others in the

  1323. home, in the

  1324. classroom, in the

  1325. workplace, and

  1326. then they say

  1327. it's maintaining

  1328. discipline and

  1329. order.

  1330. People are

  1331. lazy, and

  1332. they call it

  1333. being laid

  1334. back.

  1335. People cast

  1336. their lack of

  1337. faith as

  1338. reasonableness

  1339. and wisdom.

  1340. people are

  1341. envious, and

  1342. they pass it

  1343. off as

  1344. righteous

  1345. indignation.

  1346. People are

  1347. pridefully and

  1348. sinfully

  1349. judgmental, and

  1350. then they call

  1351. it moral

  1352. courage.

  1353. They call

  1354. cowardice

  1355. humility, and

  1356. meekness.

  1357. They call

  1358. gossip

  1359. concern.

  1360. they pass

  1361. off being a

  1362. mocker as

  1363. being witty.

  1364. They excuse

  1365. permissiveness and

  1366. licentiousness as

  1367. progressiveness and

  1368. tolerance.

  1369. They call

  1370. selfish ambition

  1371. and greed

  1372. drivenness,

  1373. industriousness.

  1374. We deceive

  1375. ourselves, that

  1376. we have no

  1377. sin.

  1378. But when we

  1379. do, the

  1380. truth is not

  1381. in us.

  1382. And that

  1383. phrase is

  1384. parallel to

  1385. verse 10,

  1386. His word is

  1387. not in us.

  1388. To claim that

  1389. one has no

  1390. sin is to

  1391. give evidence

  1392. of the fact

  1393. that Jesus,

  1394. who is the

  1395. way, the

  1396. truth, and

  1397. the life, is

  1398. not in us.

  1399. That the

  1400. word of

  1401. life, the

  1402. Jesus Christ,

  1403. is not in

  1404. us.

  1405. In contrast,

  1406. it says in

  1407. verse 9,

  1408. if we

  1409. confess our

  1410. sins, He

  1411. is faithful

  1412. and just to

  1413. forgive us

  1414. our sins and

  1415. to cleanse us

  1416. from all

  1417. unrighteousness.

  1418. What's in

  1419. view here is

  1420. confessing our

  1421. sins to God,

  1422. who alone can

  1423. forgive sins.

  1424. But in the

  1425. same way that

  1426. fellowship with

  1427. God is

  1428. necessarily

  1429. expressed in

  1430. our fellowship

  1431. with one

  1432. another, our

  1433. confession of

  1434. sins to

  1435. God also

  1436. involves

  1437. confessing

  1438. our sins

  1439. to one

  1440. another.

  1441. That's why

  1442. James 5,

    James 5:16

  1443. verse 16

  1444. says,

  1445. Therefore,

  1446. confess your

  1447. sins to

  1448. one another

  1449. and pray

  1450. for one

  1451. another that

  1452. you may be

  1453. healed.

  1454. The prayer

  1455. of a

  1456. righteous

  1457. person has

  1458. great power

  1459. as it is

  1460. working.

  1461. Only those

  1462. who declare

  1463. themselves sick

  1464. can be

  1465. treated.

  1466. Only those

  1467. who declare

  1468. themselves dirty

  1469. can be

  1470. cleansed.

  1471. only those

  1472. who declare

  1473. themselves

  1474. sinful

  1475. can be

  1476. forgiven

  1477. because God

  1478. is faithful

  1479. and just

  1480. to forgive

  1481. us our

  1482. sins and

  1483. to cleanse

  1484. us from

  1485. all unrighteousness.

  1486. God's

  1487. faithfulness

  1488. refers to

  1489. His

  1490. trustworthiness

  1491. that He

  1492. will fulfill

  1493. all of

  1494. His promises

  1495. that He

  1496. will always

  1497. be true

  1498. to His

  1499. word.

  1500. And God's

  1501. justice

  1502. elsewhere

  1503. translated as

  1504. righteousness

  1505. refers to

  1506. the fact that

  1507. God always

  1508. does what

  1509. is right.

  1510. And then

  1511. in verse 10

  1512. gives us

  1513. the final

  1514. conditional

  1515. statement

  1516. which seeks

  1517. to correct

  1518. the misconception

  1519. of the

  1520. false

  1521. teachers.

  1522. If we

  1523. say we

  1524. have not

  1525. sinned

  1526. we make

  1527. Him a

  1528. liar

  1529. and His

  1530. word is

  1531. not in

  1532. us.

  1533. You

  1534. probably

  1535. noticed

  1536. this is

  1537. very similar

  1538. to verse

  1539. 8.

  1540. The only

  1541. difference

  1542. between this

  1543. and verse

  1544. 8 is

  1545. that in

  1546. verse 8

  1547. He's

  1548. saying we

  1549. have no

  1550. sin in

  1551. the present

  1552. tense

  1553. indicating

  1554. an ongoing

  1555. achievement

  1556. of sinlessness

  1557. and then

  1558. in verse

  1559. 10

  1560. it's in

  1561. the perfect

  1562. tense

  1563. it's saying

  1564. we have

  1565. not sinned

  1566. indicating the

  1567. condition of

  1568. being innocent

  1569. of not having

  1570. sinned

  1571. a state of

  1572. innocence.

  1573. So verse 8

  1574. is saying I

  1575. do not sin

  1576. verse 10

  1577. is saying I

  1578. have not

  1579. sinned

  1580. but if we

  1581. say I

  1582. have not

  1583. sinned

  1584. John argues

  1585. we make

  1586. God a

  1587. liar and

  1588. His word

  1589. is not

  1590. in us.

  1591. Verse 6

  1592. said that if

  1593. we claim to

  1594. have fellowship

  1595. with God

  1596. but walk

  1597. in darkness

  1598. we lie

  1599. to others.

  1600. Verse 10

  1601. tells us that if

  1602. we claim to

  1603. be without

  1604. sin we

  1605. make God

  1606. out to be

  1607. a liar.

  1608. Verse 8

  1609. says that if

  1610. we claim not

  1611. to sin we

  1612. lie about

  1613. ourselves.

  1614. Verse 10

  1615. says that if

  1616. we claim to

  1617. not sin to

  1618. have no sin

  1619. we make God

  1620. out to be a

  1621. liar because

  1622. God says in

  1623. His word that

  1624. all have

  1625. sinned and

  1626. fall short of

  1627. the glory of

  1628. God.

  1629. Having addressed

  1630. the fallacies of

  1631. the false

  1632. teachers John

  1633. transitions in

  1634. chapter 2

  1635. verse 1 to

  1636. addressing the

  1637. recipients of

  1638. his letter in

  1639. very personal

  1640. terms.

  1641. Instead of

  1642. using we

  1643. and are and

  1644. including the

  1645. apostolic witnesses

  1646. along with him

  1647. in the collective

  1648. as he has done

  1649. up to this

  1650. point he says

  1651. in chapter 2

  1652. verse 1

  1653. my little

  1654. by this point

  1655. probably in the

  1656. 90s this letter

  1657. was written so

  1658. Apostle John

  1659. would have been

  1660. quite old by

  1661. this time and

  1662. he is as an

  1663. elder of this

  1664. church writing

  1665. very affectionately

  1666. as a spiritual

  1667. father and

  1668. exhorting the

  1669. churches and

  1670. he is telling

  1671. them lest they

  1672. think that all

  1673. this talk about

  1674. we all sin we

  1675. need to confess

  1676. our sins to

  1677. one another lest

  1678. they think that

  1679. that means sin

  1680. is okay.

  1681. He tells them

  1682. no I am writing

  1683. these things to

  1684. you so that you

  1685. may not sin.

  1686. Yes sin is a

  1687. reality yes we

  1688. should confess our

  1689. sins but that

  1690. does not mean we

  1691. should condone sin

  1692. or turn a blind

  1693. eye to sin or

  1694. minimize sin.

  1695. No we to bring

  1696. sin into the

  1697. light of Christ

  1698. is to expose

  1699. it for the

  1700. heinous evil

  1701. that it is

  1702. and ask Christ

  1703. to deal with it

  1704. because we are

  1705. unable to.

  1706. But because

  1707. John does

  1708. acknowledge the

  1709. reality of sin

  1710. in the lives of

  1711. believers he is

  1712. quick to remind

  1713. us but if

  1714. anyone does

  1715. sin we have

  1716. an advocate with

  1717. the father

  1718. Jesus Christ

  1719. the righteous.

  1720. we now he's

  1721. referring to

  1722. we John and

  1723. the people that

  1724. are receiving

  1725. his letter we

  1726. have an advocate

  1727. with the father

  1728. Jesus Christ

  1729. the righteous

  1730. we have an

  1731. ancient enemy

  1732. Satan right

  1733. his name means

  1734. the accuser

  1735. he accuses

  1736. us

  1737. condemns

  1738. us

  1739. slanders

  1740. us

  1741. but fear

  1742. not because

  1743. it says we

  1744. also have

  1745. an advocate

  1746. the one

  1747. who takes

  1748. up our

  1749. cause

  1750. defends

  1751. us in

  1752. the court

  1753. of God's

  1754. justice

  1755. the one

  1756. who speaks

  1757. for us

  1758. when we

  1759. are stumbling

  1760. for words

  1761. and are

  1762. unable to

  1763. defend

  1764. ourselves

  1765. because

  1766. Jesus has

  1767. ascended to

  1768. the heavens

  1769. and is at

  1770. the seated

  1771. at the right

  1772. hand of

  1773. God the

  1774. father

  1775. and he's

  1776. interceding

  1777. for us

  1778. he's advocating

  1779. for us

  1780. defending us

  1781. and that's

  1782. why Hebrews

  1783. 4 16

  1784. says let

  1785. us then

  1786. with confidence

  1787. draw near

  1788. to the throne

  1789. of grace

  1790. that we may

  1791. receive mercy

  1792. and find

  1793. grace

  1794. to help

  1795. in time

  1796. of need

  1797. but let me

  1798. ask you

  1799. how can

  1800. Jesus

  1801. advocate

  1802. for sinners

  1803. for people

  1804. who are

  1805. guilty

  1806. people whose

  1807. verdict is

  1808. guilty

  1809. how can

  1810. Jesus

  1811. advocate

  1812. for sinners

  1813. in front

  1814. of an

  1815. impartial

  1816. just

  1817. judge

  1818. there's

  1819. something

  1820. that I

  1821. glossed over

  1822. earlier in

  1823. chapter 1

  1824. verse 9

  1825. he said

  1826. if we

  1827. confess our

  1828. sins

  1829. he's

  1830. faithful

  1831. and

  1832. just

  1833. to

  1834. forgive

  1835. us

  1836. our

  1837. sins

  1838. and to

  1839. cleanse

  1840. us

  1841. from

  1842. all

  1843. unrighteousness

  1844. the word

  1845. just

  1846. there means

  1847. righteousness

  1848. it's the

  1849. same word

  1850. it's the

  1851. adjectival

  1852. form

  1853. of the

  1854. word

  1855. righteousness

  1856. so then

  1857. there's a

  1858. contrast

  1859. there

  1860. a word

  1861. play

  1862. there

  1863. God

  1864. is

  1865. righteous

  1866. to

  1867. cleanse

  1868. us

  1869. from

  1870. all

  1871. unrighteousness

  1872. but

  1873. how can

  1874. it be

  1875. righteous

  1876. to

  1877. clear

  1878. the

  1879. unrighteous

  1880. x

  1881. exodus

    Exodus 34:7

  1882. 34

  1883. verse 7

  1884. when

  1885. god

  1886. reveals

  1887. his

  1888. character

  1889. to

  1890. his

  1891. people

  1892. he

  1893. spoke

  1894. of

  1895. his

  1896. righteousness

  1897. and

  1898. justice

  1899. and

  1900. he

  1901. said

  1902. he

  1903. will

  1904. by

  1905. no

  1906. means

  1907. clear

  1908. the

  1909. guilty

  1910. he

  1911. commanded

  1912. his

  1913. people

  1914. in

  1915. exodus

    Exodus 23:7

  1916. chapter

  1917. 23

  1918. verse

  1919. 7

  1920. do

  1921. not

  1922. kill

  1923. the

  1924. innocent

  1925. and

  1926. righteous

  1927. for

  1928. I

  1929. will

  1930. not

  1931. acquit

  1932. the

  1933. wicked

  1934. it

  1935. is

  1936. inconsistent

  1937. with

  1938. his

  1939. character

  1940. to

  1941. acquit

  1942. the

  1943. wicked

  1944. to

  1945. clear

  1946. the

  1947. unrighteous

  1948. so

  1949. how

  1950. is

  1951. it

  1952. just

  1953. for

  1954. god

  1955. to

  1956. clear

  1957. the

  1958. unrighteous

  1959. how

  1960. is

  1961. it

  1962. righteous

  1963. of

  1964. god

  1965. to

  1966. cleanse

  1967. the

  1968. unrighteous

  1969. the

  1970. answer

  1971. is in

  1972. this

  1973. verse

  1974. because

  1975. of

  1976. jesus

  1977. christ

  1978. the

  1979. righteous

  1980. it

  1981. is

  1982. the

  1983. righteousness

  1984. of christ

  1985. that

  1986. pleads

  1987. for

  1988. us

  1989. verse

  1990. 2

  1991. explains

  1992. this

  1993. he

  1994. is

  1995. the

  1996. propitiation

  1997. for

  1998. our

  1999. sins

  2000. and

  2001. not

  2002. for

  2003. ours

  2004. only

  2005. but

  2006. also

  2007. for

  2008. the

  2009. sins

  2010. of

  2011. the

  2012. whole

  2013. world

  2014. just

  2015. to

  2016. clarify

  2017. that

  2018. not

  2019. only

  2020. for

  2021. our

  2022. sins

  2023. but

  2024. also

  2025. for

  2026. the

  2027. sins

  2028. of

  2029. the

  2030. whole

  2031. world

  2032. that

  2033. doesn't

  2034. mean

  2035. that

  2036. everyone

  2037. in

  2038. the

  2039. world

  2040. automatically

  2041. is

  2042. saved

  2043. because

  2044. of

  2045. Jesus

  2046. that

  2047. blatantly

  2048. contradicts

  2049. other

  2050. parts

  2051. of

  2052. scripture

  2053. and

  2054. even

  2055. things

  2056. that

  2057. John

  2058. says

  2059. later

  2060. in

  2061. his

  2062. letter

  2063. chapter

  2064. 5

  2065. what

  2066. he

  2067. means

  2068. here

  2069. is

  2070. that

  2071. Jesus

  2072. pays

  2073. for

  2074. the

  2075. sins

  2076. of

  2077. the

  2078. whole

  2079. world

  2080. without

  2081. distinction

  2082. not

  2083. without

  2084. exception

  2085. meaning

  2086. he does

  2087. this

  2088. for

  2089. all

  2090. peoples

  2091. Jews

  2092. and

  2093. Gentiles

  2094. Asian

  2095. people

  2096. African

  2097. people

  2098. European

  2099. people

  2100. American

  2101. people

  2102. Australian

  2103. people

  2104. God

  2105. does

  2106. it

  2107. for

  2108. all

  2109. peoples

  2110. Jesus

  2111. his

  2112. atonement

  2113. is

  2114. sufficient

  2115. for

  2116. all

  2117. though

  2118. it

  2119. is

  2120. only

  2121. efficient

  2122. for

  2123. God's

  2124. chosen

  2125. people

  2126. John
