  1. Our passage this morning is 1 John chapter 2, verses 18 through chapter 3, verse 10.

    1 John 2:18

  2. Before we start, just a sound check. Does that sound good for everybody?

  3. Good.

  4. Verse 18.

  5. Children, it is the last hour, and as you have heard that Antichrist is coming,

  6. so now many Antichrists have come.

  7. Therefore, we know that it is the last hour.

  8. They went out from us, but they were not of us.

  9. For if they had been of us, they would have continued with us.

  10. But they went out, that it might become plain that they all are not of us.

  11. But you have been anointed by the Holy One, and you all have knowledge.

  12. I write to you, not because you do not know the truth, but because you know it,

  13. and because no lie is of the truth.

  14. Who is the liar but he who denies that Jesus is the Christ?

  15. This is the Antichrist.

  16. He who denies the Father and the Son.

  17. No one who denies the Son has the Father.

  18. Whoever confesses the Son has the Father also.

  19. Let what you heard from the beginning abide in you.

  20. If what you heard from the beginning abides in you,

  21. then you too will abide in the Son and in the Father.

  22. And this is the promise that he made to us, eternal life.

  23. I write these things to you about those who are trying to deceive you.

  24. But the anointing that you received from him abides in you, and you have no need that anyone should teach you.

  25. But as his anointing teaches you about everything, and is true and is no lie, just as it has taught you, abide in him.

  26. And now little children abide in him, so that when he appears we may have confidence and not shrink from him, and shame is at his coming.

  27. If you know that he is righteous, you may be sure that everyone who practices righteousness has been born of him.

  28. See what kind of love the Father has given to us, that we should be called children of God.

  29. And so we are.

  30. The reason why the world does not know us is that it did not know him.

  31. Beloved, we are God's children now, and what we will be has not yet been appeared.

  32. But we know that when he appears we shall be like him, because we shall see him as he is.

  33. And everyone who thus hopes in him purifies himself as he is pure.

  34. Everyone who makes a practice of sinning also practices lawlessness.

  35. Sin is lawlessness.

  36. You know that he appeared to take away sin, and in him there is no sin.

  37. No one who abides in him keeps on sinning, and no one who keeps on sinning has either seen him or known him.

  38. Little children, let no one deceive you.

  39. Whoever practices righteousness is righteous, as he is righteous.

  40. Whoever makes a practice of sinning is of the devil, for the devil has been sinning from the beginning.

  41. The reason the Son of God appeared was to destroy the works of the devil.

  42. No one born of God makes a practice of sinning, for God's seed abides in him,

  43. and he cannot keep on sinning because he has been born of God.

  44. By this it is evident who are the children of God, and who are the children of the devil.

  45. Whoever does not practice righteousness is not of God, nor is the one who does not love his brother.

  46. Let's pray.

  47. Lord, this morning we ask for your help as we open up your word and as we study this passage.

  48. Lord, we pray that you would shape us, that you would teach us, that you would encourage us at this time.

  49. Lord, that your word would be a sword and cut through what needs to be cut, and also lift up and strengthen those who need to be strengthened.

  50. God, help us with distractions.

  51. Help us to focus on you.

  52. Help us to learn what it is to abide in you.

  53. And we ask these things in your holy name.

  54. Amen.

  55. Amen.

  56. I'm going to take keys out of my pocket because I play with them.

  57. So I'm going to get rid of that distraction.

  58. We live in a very strange time, as you guys know.

  59. A lot of things that we've had our whole life, that we've taken for granted, for the moment has been taken away.

  60. And you guys know this.

  61. I'm not telling you anything new.

  62. These things have been taken away in a way that we probably wouldn't have thought about before.

  63. Freedoms taken away.

  64. For safety reasons, our traveling freedoms have been greatly limited.

  65. For safety reasons, our church doesn't meet together in one spot.

  66. For safety reasons, we can't go to our normal workplaces and our classrooms.

  67. Sitting down and eating at a restaurant with friends.

  68. We just can't do that right now.

  69. For the time being, we live in a very different, a very strange world.

  70. And it drives us crazy sometimes, right?

  71. It's also depressing at times.

  72. But this life keeps going.

  73. And what are we as Christians to do with that?

  74. What are we to think or act?

  75. How are we to live in the midst of this new silence and yet global chaos?

  76. And that's what I want to dig in and pull out from our passage this morning.

  77. As we look at a couple things.

  78. We're going to be looking at the Antichrist and the children of Christ.

  79. How are we to live in these last days?

  80. And where do we find truth and eternal hope?

  81. The idea that John has given us from this passage this morning is this.

  82. He wants us to be warned of Antichrist.

  83. And we'll get into that.

  84. But he wants us to be reminded of the hope that we have in following the real Christ.

  85. Now from that statement, you can guess that we'll be talking about two different people.

  86. We'll be talking about the Antichrist.

  87. That is those who oppose Christ and followers of Christ.

  88. And for those two groups, we're going to be looking at who they are, how they live.

  89. And from that, we'll be able to know what they believe.

  90. So let's start with verse 18.

  91. It says,

  92. Children, it is the last hour, and as you have heard that Antichrist is coming, so now many Antichrists have come.

  93. Therefore, we know that it is the last hour.

  94. This word children, as Sean has mentioned before, is one that John has used in 1 John over a dozen times.

  95. It's not derogatory.

  96. It's not looking down, but it's loving.

  97. See, John is one of Jesus' disciples who's now an older elder in the church.

  98. And he has this love, this fondness for the people in the church.

  99. And so he calls them children.

  100. Children, it is the last hour, that is the last days.

  101. This is the time after Jesus' death, resurrection, and ascension.

  102. But before Jesus comes back, and that time of judgment.

  103. That time is the last days, this last hour that he's talking about.

  104. Hebrews 1 says,

  105. Long ago, at many times and in many ways, God spoke to our fathers by the prophets.

  106. But in these last days, he has spoken to us by his Son.

  107. We live in the last days.

  108. John is speaking to the people in the church of Ephesus in the last days.

  109. We're in the last days.

  110. And there is this Antichrist.

  111. What is he talking about?

  112. Near the end of the last days, before the final judgment,

  113. we can read in the Bible and in several passages that there will be an Antichrist.

  114. One who rises up and has power and authority from Satan.

  115. And the world will follow after and worship this person.

  116. I'm not going to get into that right now because we'll save that for when we go through Revelation.

  117. But John here is making us aware of two things that are connected.

  118. One is, in the end, there is an Antichrist that is coming.

  119. But before that time, right now, in our time, in John's time,

  120. there is a spirit of the Antichrist that is here and among us.

  121. It's at work.

  122. It's that battle that we feel,

  123. that spiritual battle between God and Satan,

  124. evil and good.

  125. John is concerned that the churches in and around Ephesus

  126. are going to be pulled into the teachings of these Antichrists.

  127. That is, those who are teaching something that is against what Christ has taught.

  128. So he's saying,

  129. we've heard that the Antichrist is coming

  130. and many forerunners of that Antichrist are already here and among us.

  131. So be warned and be on guard.

  132. The next verse starts to explain why.

  133. And it kind of should grab our attention a little bit.

  134. Let me explain as we read it.

  135. Verse 19.

  136. He's talking about people who were part of the church.

  137. People like us from the outside that look like are part of the church.

  138. People who worshiped and fellowshiped together.

  139. People who were in community groups with one another.

  140. They were people that left the church.

  141. And why?

  142. John says,

  143. because they were not of us.

  144. Because if they were,

  145. they would still be with us.

  146. So we can pick up here that there's this

  147. divine purpose for why they left.

  148. And that's to become evidence to us

  149. that they were not part of us.

  150. So the test here is they did not remain.

  151. That's how we know.

  152. That's the first characteristic.

  153. Now obviously we're not talking about

  154. people who have moved on.

  155. People who have

  156. have gone to another church,

  157. moved to another location.

  158. And we aren't necessarily talking about

  159. people who

  160. never truly believed in Jesus

  161. and fell away from the church.

  162. Although that would fit here

  163. because

  164. someone who doesn't believe,

  165. there is an aspect of

  166. denying Jesus.

  167. That is true.

  168. But here,

  169. John is warning us

  170. specifically about a certain group of people.

  171. Let's jump to verse 22

  172. and we'll take a look at that.

  173. Who is the liar

  174. but he who denies

  175. that Jesus is the Christ?

  176. This is the Antichrist.

  177. He who denies

  178. the Father and the Son.

  179. And this is the group

  180. that John wants to warn us against.

  181. Those who leave the church

  182. and those who deny

  183. that Jesus is the Christ.

  184. No one who denies the Son

  185. has the Father.

  186. Whoever confesses the Son

  187. has the Father also.

  188. So John is talking about

  189. people who have left the church

  190. who have denied Christ

  191. but that's not all.

  192. Looking at verse 26,

  193. it says,

  194. I write these things to you

  195. about those who are trying

  196. to deceive you.

  197. So they didn't just leave the church

  198. but they were looking

  199. to deceive others

  200. by peddling a false Christ,

  201. a counterfeit.

  202. They are seeking to infect others

  203. and further spread

  204. the spirit of the Antichrist

  205. that is already present

  206. in the world where we live.

  207. How was the church then

  208. and how is the church now

  209. protected against this deception?

  210. Yes, we are protected by God.

  211. That is true.

  212. We could give it that pat answer

  213. but John wants us

  214. to get more out of it

  215. than just saying

  216. we're protected by God.

  217. How are we protected by God?

  218. Looking back at verse 20,

  219. but you have been anointed

  220. by the Holy One

  221. and you all have knowledge.

  222. What does he mean first

  223. by the anointed by the Holy One?

  224. If we look back to the Old Testament,

  225. the anointing of someone

  226. that took place

  227. was this outward sign

  228. that something was happening

  229. as well as an inward change.

  230. So 1 Samuel 16, 13 says this

  231. about when David was anointed king.

  232. It says,

  233. Then Samuel took the horn of oil

  234. and anointed him

  235. in the midst of his brothers.

  236. And the spirit of the Lord

  237. rushed upon David

  238. from that day forward.

  239. So there was anointing physically

  240. but there was an anointing

  241. by the Holy Spirit.

  242. 2 Corinthians 1, 22 says,

  243. And it is God who establishes us

  244. with you in Christ

  245. and has anointed us

  246. and who has also put his seal on us

  247. and given us his spirit

  248. and our hearts as a guarantee.

  249. So John is saying

  250. that we've been anointed

  251. with the Holy Spirit.

  252. And this signifies

  253. an inward transformation

  254. that has begun.

  255. This is not a work of us

  256. but one of God.

  257. And because of that,

  258. he says,

  259. You all have knowledge.

  260. Verse 21 says,

  261. I write to you

  262. not because you do not know the truth

  263. but because you know it

  264. and because no lie

  265. is of the truth.

  266. So their guard then

  267. and our guard now

  268. against these deceptions

  269. is the anointing work

  270. done by God

  271. and the knowledge of truth

  272. that we have been given

  273. through that.

  274. We have been given the truth

  275. and there is no lie in it.

  276. It isn't a true story

  277. unless it's completely true.

  278. The real truth

  279. means that there's no lie in it.

  280. I think of

  281. if someone goes to court

  282. and they go to testify,

  283. the promise that they have to make

  284. is I promise to tell the truth,

  285. the whole truth

  286. and nothing but the truth.

  287. The reason why is

  288. as we all know,

  289. sometimes we've told stories

  290. and we'll twist it

  291. just a little bit.

  292. Maybe we'll leave something out.

  293. Something,

  294. a slight variation,

  295. usually to make us look better

  296. or to take some of the fault

  297. off of us.

  298. But this is not the truth.

  299. That's because it has

  300. a little bit of a lie in it.

  301. And so John is telling us

  302. the truth that we have been given

  303. has no lie in it.

  304. That's how we are able to guard

  305. against these false teachings

  306. by that knowledge

  307. that we have through

  308. this anointing.

  309. If we look at verses 24 and 25,

  310. it says,

  311. Let what you heard

  312. from the beginning

  313. abide in you.

  314. If what you heard

  315. from the beginning

  316. abides in you,

  317. then you too will abide

  318. in the Son

  319. and in the Father.

  320. And this is the promise

  321. that He made us,

  322. eternal life.

  323. He repeats that word,

  324. abide,

  325. three times

  326. just in those two verses.

  327. To abide,

  328. meaning to remain

  329. or to dwell in.

  330. Let the gospel

  331. that you heard

  332. from the beginning

  333. remain

  334. and dwell

  335. inside of you.

  336. If the gospel

  337. of Christ

  338. remains in you,

  339. then you will remain

  340. in Christ

  341. and in the Father.

  342. And the promise

  343. from that

  344. is eternal life.

  345. Think of the end

  346. of John 3, 16.

  347. Whoever believes

  348. in Him

  349. being Jesus

  350. will not perish

  351. but have eternal life.

  352. the truth about

  353. Jesus Christ

  354. abides in us.

  355. And when we abide

  356. in Him,

  357. there is eternal life.

  358. And that's a promise.

  359. That's a God promise

  360. for us.

  361. Verse 27.

  362. But the anointing

  363. that you receive

  364. from Him

  365. abides in you

  366. and you have no need

  367. that anyone

  368. should teach you.

  369. But as His anointing

  370. teaches you

  371. about everything

  372. and is true

  373. and is no lie,

  374. just as it has taught you,

  375. abide in Him.

  376. So the anointing

  377. talked about

  378. in verse 20,

  379. this anointing

  380. by the Holy Spirit

  381. from which we have knowledge,

  382. that knowledge

  383. we receive,

  384. that knowledge

  385. abides in us.

  386. What knowledge

  387. is He talking about here?

  388. He's talking about

  389. the gospel,

  390. the gospel-saving knowledge

  391. of Jesus Christ.

  392. That's what we've been given

  393. in that anointing,

  394. the knowledge

  395. of who Jesus is,

  396. His God incarnate

  397. sent to earth

  398. to pay the penalty

  399. for our sins

  400. on the cross.

  401. It's His victory

  402. over death and sin,

  403. His ascension back

  404. to heaven.

  405. It's not knowledge

  406. of some counterfeit Christ,

  407. but it's a true,

  408. authentic Christ.

  409. That's the knowledge

  410. that we have

  411. from our anointing,

  412. our indwelling

  413. of the Holy Spirit

  414. that has come on us.

  415. It opens our eyes

  416. and it gives us

  417. this knowledge

  418. that we didn't have before.

  419. This is Holy Spirit

  420. God work

  421. that is taking place.

  422. This is not a work of man.

  423. This is not something

  424. we can go and achieve

  425. and find out.

  426. No person can do this.

  427. When John says,

  428. you have no need

  429. that anyone should teach you,

  430. it doesn't mean

  431. that we don't need

  432. anyone to teach us

  433. about God.

  434. We don't need anyone

  435. to teach us about the Bible

  436. or how we live.

  437. That would go against

  438. many verses in the Bible

  439. about teaching one another

  440. and what the scriptures

  441. are used for.

  442. It also doesn't make sense

  443. because here we find

  444. that John is teaching us something.

  445. So why would John say,

  446. you don't need a teacher

  447. as he's teaching us?

  448. So that's obviously

  449. not what it means.

  450. He's talking about

  451. the knowledge

  452. that we receive

  453. from God

  454. in the beginning.

  455. That knowledge

  456. when Christ

  457. opened our eyes,

  458. that anointing

  459. that took place,

  460. no one can teach

  461. that to us

  462. and that knowledge

  463. does not change.

  464. The truth

  465. about the authentic Christ,

  466. the cross,

  467. the gospel message,

  468. that remains the same.

  469. In verse 21,

  470. he says,

  471. because you know it.

  472. You are given it,

  473. you know it,

  474. and we don't move away

  475. from that message

  476. to anything new.

  477. There is no new truth.

  478. There's no new way

  479. of following God.

  480. There isn't,

  481. it's not like technology

  482. that we have

  483. that gets old,

  484. it gets slow,

  485. and so we want

  486. a newer model.

  487. There are features

  488. that we're missing out on.

  489. This knowledge

  490. that we've been given

  491. strengthens us,

  492. it helps us,

  493. it builds our faith,

  494. it helps us to abide

  495. in Him,

  496. and never changes.

  497. The Holy Spirit

  498. that works and moves

  499. in each of us

  500. will never move beyond

  501. or be contrary

  502. to what the Bible teaches.

  503. I'm going to say that again

  504. just so that you hear,

  505. the Holy Spirit,

  506. the work that the Holy Spirit

  507. does in each one of us

  508. as Christians

  509. will never move you

  510. beyond or contrary

  511. to what the Bible teaches.

  512. So if you're being led

  513. towards something

  514. or someone

  515. that the Bible teaches against,

  516. you need to check that

  517. because it's not

  518. of the Holy Spirit.

  519. That foundational knowledge

  520. is true,

  521. and we are to abide

  522. in that truth.

  523. So we talked about

  524. the Antichrist,

  525. those who deny Christ,

  526. and how we are guarded

  527. and should be on guard

  528. against them.

  529. The second part

  530. of our passage

  531. this morning,

  532. we're going to be looking

  533. at what it means

  534. to follow the real Christ.

  535. Guarding against Antichrist,

  536. following the real Christ,

  537. and the hope

  538. that is ours

  539. in that.

  540. As we look at

  541. what it means

  542. to follow Christ,

  543. John is showing us

  544. two groups of people.

  545. He's showing us

  546. children of God.

  547. He's also showing us

  548. children of the devil.

  549. How you live

  550. will indicate

  551. which one of those groups

  552. you are in.

  553. You're a child of God

  554. or you're a child of the devil.

  555. As John ends chapter 2

  556. and moves into chapter 3,

  557. he continues this concept

  558. of abiding.

  559. Verse 28,

  560. And now little children,

  561. abide in him

  562. so that when he appears

  563. you may have confidence

  564. and not shrink from him

  565. in shame of his coming.

  566. We are to abide in him,

  567. to continue in him,

  568. in the truth

  569. that we have been taught

  570. and given

  571. from the Holy Spirit.

  572. And if we do,

  573. then we are confident

  574. when he returns.

  575. Why?

  576. Because confident

  577. that we remain

  578. in the truth

  579. until he came back

  580. from us.

  581. We can't be confident

  582. if we left

  583. and we followed

  584. another truth.

  585. Verse 29,

  586. If you know

  587. that he is righteous,

  588. you may be sure

  589. that everyone

  590. who practices righteousness

  591. has been born of him.

  592. In other words,

  593. we, children of God,

  594. know that Jesus

  595. is righteous.

  596. And we also know

  597. that all who do

  598. what is right

  599. are God's children.

  600. Romans 3.10

  601. says this,

  602. None is righteous,

  603. no not one.

  604. No one understands

  605. and no one seeks

  606. after God.

  607. He is the righteous one.

  608. Those who practice

  609. righteousness

  610. are born of him

  611. because in and of ourselves

  612. we don't follow

  613. after righteousness.

  614. So for us to do that,

  615. we have to be born,

  616. born again,

  617. of Christ.

  618. So it takes us

  619. to chapter 3.

  620. And it starts off

  621. with a beautiful verse

  622. about our true identity.

  623. Verse 1,

  624. See what kind of love

  625. the Father has given to us

  626. that we should be called

  627. children of God

  628. and so we are.

  629. It says,

  630. See what kind of love.

  631. What do we see?

  632. What love

  633. have we been given?

  634. We've been given

  635. the name

  636. of being called

  637. children of God.

  638. And not just called that,

  639. but he also adds,

  640. and we are.

  641. We are children of God.

  642. In our life,

  643. we are called

  644. different things

  645. and we are known

  646. to different people

  647. in different ways

  648. by functions

  649. that we do,

  650. by areas

  651. where we serve,

  652. roles that we play.

  653. But as a Christian,

  654. if you trust in Jesus,

  655. above all those things

  656. for all of your life,

  657. you are known

  658. as a child of God.

  659. If you trust in Jesus

  660. and you believe in him

  661. and you remain

  662. in that truth,

  663. you are a child of God.

  664. God finished,

  665. or God,

  666. John finishes the verse

  667. with this statement.

  668. He says,

  669. The reason why the world

  670. does not know you

  671. is that it did not know him.

  672. John chapter 1

    John 1:9–11

  673. verses 9 through 11

  674. says this,

  675. The true light,

  676. which gives light

  677. to everyone,

  678. was coming into the world.

  679. This is talking about Jesus

  680. coming to the world.

  681. He was in the world

  682. and the world

  683. was made through him,

  684. yet the world

  685. did not know him.

  686. He came to his own

  687. and his own people

  688. did not receive him.

  689. So it feels weird at first

  690. where John tells us

  691. that we are children of God

  692. and then he follows it up

  693. with the world

  694. doesn't know us

  695. because it doesn't know him.

  696. But really,

  697. they're connected

  698. if we think about it.

  699. We shouldn't be surprised

  700. because children of God

  701. is not something

  702. that the world knows.

  703. We aren't to be surprised

  704. when people don't understand

  705. our call to follow Christ.

  706. when we step out in faith

  707. and trust in God

  708. when there is nothing

  709. humanly visible

  710. to put our hope in.

  711. And that's what we're called to do.

  712. When we're called to be examples

  713. of showing forth

  714. the love of Christ

  715. instead of living for ourselves,

  716. the world will not understand this

  717. because the world

  718. does not know the God

  719. who is calling us

  720. to do these things.

  721. Next, John reminds us again

  722. of our identity

  723. in verses 2 and 3.

  724. Beloved, we are God's children now

  725. and what we will be

  726. has not yet appeared.

  727. But we know that when it appears

  728. we shall be like him

  729. because we shall see him

  730. as he is.

  731. And everyone who thus hopes in him

  732. purifies himself

  733. as he is pure.

  734. What we will be

  735. has not appeared yet.

  736. is what he's talking about

  737. is our glorified bodies.

  738. That is not taking place yet.

  739. We know that.

  740. Bodies that will never get old,

  741. never get sick,

  742. never get cancer,

  743. never wear out.

  744. And to be

  745. completely

  746. done with sin,

  747. it will be glorious

  748. when we will be like Christ.

  749. when those two things

  750. are taken away,

  751. death and sin.

  752. And sometimes,

  753. depending on the day,

  754. we're not sure

  755. which one is worse.

  756. Sometimes they both are.

  757. Sickness and pain

  758. in ourselves,

  759. pain and death

  760. in other people

  761. that we love.

  762. On other days,

  763. our struggles are with sin.

  764. our daily battles

  765. against pride

  766. and anger

  767. and lust.

  768. We see the struggles

  769. in ourself.

  770. We see the struggles

  771. in those around us.

  772. And it makes life hard.

  773. But we know that God

  774. has us here

  775. in 2020

  776. during this pandemic

  777. for a purpose.

  778. But we also

  779. can't wait

  780. until death

  781. and sin

  782. are no more.

  783. John says,

  784. when He appears,

  785. we will be like Him.

  786. At that moment

  787. that Christ our Savior

  788. comes back,

  789. we will be like Him,

  790. changed forever

  791. and no sin

  792. in us.

  793. Our thoughts,

  794. our opinions,

  795. our actions,

  796. our speech,

  797. they will be pure

  798. and sinless.

  799. There will be

  800. no temptation

  801. towards things

  802. of the flesh.

  803. There will be

  804. no weakness

  805. in our body.

  806. There will be

  807. no flaws,

  808. no disease.

  809. We will be perfect,

  810. filled with the Holy Spirit

  811. and in complete

  812. communion

  813. with God,

  814. our Maker.

  815. We will be like Him

  816. because we shall

  817. see Him

  818. as He is.

  819. New glorified bodies

  820. seeing God

  821. in a way

  822. we've never seen before.

  823. Why?

  824. Because we've never

  825. been able to see

  826. like that before.

  827. To be able to see

  828. with sin

  829. and death

  830. and pain

  831. gone from us.

  832. The way God

  833. intended us

  834. to see Him

  835. in the beginning.

  836. He follows that up

  837. in verse 3.

  838. And everyone

  839. who thus

  840. hopes in Him

  841. purifies himself

  842. as He is pure.

  843. That is,

  844. if our trust

  845. is in Him,

  846. we will want

  847. to be like Him.

  848. That's part

  849. of the sanctification

  850. work that the Holy Spirit

  851. does in us,

  852. in each one of us.

  853. We know that

  854. when Jesus comes back,

  855. we will be like Him

  856. and our bodies glorified.

  857. We also know

  858. that He is pure,

  859. meaning He is

  860. holy and undefined.

  861. He is without sin.

  862. Everyone who

  863. hopes in Him,

  864. who truly believes

  865. in Jesus Christ

  866. and what He has done

  867. for us,

  868. purifies Himself.

  869. That is,

  870. we try to live holy.

  871. We try to live undefiled

  872. as Jesus

  873. is holy and undefiled.

  874. We practice

  875. holy living.

  876. We practice

  877. at being pure

  878. because Christ

  879. is pure.

  880. and Christ

  881. is coming

  882. for us.

  883. In verse 4,

  884. we see another group

  885. of people

  886. practicing something

  887. different.

  888. We know that

  889. Christ is,

  890. sorry,

  891. wrong paragraph,

  892. everyone who

  893. makes a practice

  894. of sinning

  895. also practices

  896. lawlessness.

  897. This is in verse 4.

  898. Sin is lawlessness.

  899. Lawlessness

  900. is what it sounds

  901. like it is.

  902. It is a condition

  903. of being without

  904. law.

  905. In this case,

  906. we're talking about

  907. God's law.

  908. So to be lawless

  909. is to be without

  910. God's law,

  911. whether by ignorance

  912. or deliberate

  913. violation against it.

  914. And that's what

  915. verse 4 says

  916. is sin.

  917. Sin is lawlessness.

  918. Sin is to be

  919. without God's law.

  920. You don't want it.

  921. You're ignorant

  922. of it.

  923. You have your own

  924. law.

  925. That's lawlessness.

  926. That's sin.

  927. Verse 5,

  928. you know that he

  929. appeared in order

  930. to take away sin.

  931. John the Baptist

  932. testified to this

  933. at Jesus'

  934. baptism in

  935. John 1.

  936. He says,

  937. the next day

  938. he saw Jesus

  939. coming toward him

  940. and he said,

  941. Behold the Lamb

  942. of God

  943. who takes away

  944. the sins of the world.

  945. He came to take away

  946. sins by dying

  947. on the cross,

  948. by taking our

  949. punishment

  950. and paying the price

  951. for our sin.

  952. That's what makes

  953. it possible for us

  954. to repent

  955. and to ask forgiveness.

  956. And in that,

  957. our sins

  958. are taken away.

  959. And then the rest

  960. of verse 5 says,

  961. And in him

  962. there is no sin.

  963. We know this.

  964. He could not

  965. have died for us

  966. if you had

  967. any sin in him.

  968. 2 Corinthians 5.21

  969. pulls those truths

  970. together in this.

  971. For our sake

  972. he made him

  973. to be sin

  974. who knew no sin.

  975. So that in him

  976. we might become

  977. the righteousness

  978. of God.

  979. He did not know sin

  980. and his sacrifice

  981. made it possible

  982. for our sins

  983. to be taken away.

  984. We know that Jesus

  985. came to take away sin

  986. and we know that in him

  987. there is no sin.

  988. And that is the great

  989. thing to know.

  990. But what do we do

  991. with that knowledge

  992. that Jesus had no sin

  993. and he took away

  994. our sin?

  995. How does that affect

  996. our daily living?

  997. sin?

  998. Look at verse 6.

  999. No one who abides

  1000. in him

  1001. keeps on sinning.

  1002. No one who keeps

  1003. on sinning

  1004. has either seen him

  1005. or known him.

  1006. We talked earlier

  1007. about abiding.

  1008. That is to

  1009. remain

  1010. or dwell

  1011. in Christ

  1012. and the knowledge

  1013. of who he is.

  1014. If we remain

  1015. in Christ

  1016. then we cannot

  1017. keep sinning.

  1018. They oppose

  1019. each other.

  1020. They both

  1021. can't happen

  1022. together.

  1023. It is like saying

  1024. you remain healthy

  1025. and you keep

  1026. getting sick.

  1027. You can't do both.

  1028. There is a connection

  1029. between the words

  1030. abiding and keeping.

  1031. You can't abide

1032. or remain in one thing

  1033. while keeping

  1034. and remaining

  1035. something else.

  1036. You can't remain

  1037. honest

  1038. while keeping up

  1039. a lie.

  1040. Both cannot happen.

  1041. And John helps

  1042. nail this down

  1043. for us.

  1044. If you keep

  1045. on sinning

  1046. you cannot

  1047. know him

  1048. is what he is

  1049. saying.

  1050. Genuine Christians

  1051. that know God

  1052. that abide in Christ

  1053. because they believe

  1054. in who he is

  1055. cannot make a

  1056. practice of sinning

  1057. because they

  1058. are making a

  1059. practice of

  1060. abiding in Christ

  1061. and we can't

  1062. do both.

  1063. That practice

  1064. to practice

  1065. something

  1066. is to

  1067. continue in it.

  1068. To do it

  1069. repeatedly

  1070. on a regular

  1071. basis or pattern.

  1072. A lot of times

  1073. it is to get

  1074. better at something.

  1075. I want to get

  1076. better at guitar

  1077. so I will

  1078. practice it.

  1079. I want to get

  1080. better at running

  1081. so I run

  1082. more.

  1083. So if you

  1084. practice

  1085. or make a

  1086. practice of

  1087. sinning

  1088. you cannot

  1089. be a child

  1090. of God.

  1091. What do you

  1092. do with

  1093. your sin?

  1094. Is there

  1095. a sin

  1096. that you're

  1097. practicing

  1098. and not

  1099. fighting against?

  1100. A sin

  1101. that you're

  1102. not letting

  1103. go of?

  1104. Do you

  1105. hide it?

  1106. Do you

  1107. continue in

  1108. it?

  1109. Maybe

  1110. perfect it

  1111. so people

  1112. don't notice

  1113. it and

  1114. you enjoy

  1115. it more?

  1116. That's what

  1117. it is to

  1118. practice

  1119. sinning.

  1120. Verse 7

  1121. he says,

  1122. Little children

  1123. let no one

  1124. deceive you.

  1125. Whoever

  1126. practices

  1127. righteousness

  1128. is righteous

  1129. as he

  1130. is righteous.

  1131. John is

  1132. going after

  1133. two things

  1134. here.

  1135. One is

  1136. the false

  1137. teaching of

  1138. the Antichrist.

  1139. and we

  1140. didn't get

  1141. into it

  1142. earlier

  1143. but this

  1144. was part

  1145. of what

  1146. the false

  1147. teaching was

  1148. about at

  1149. this time.

  1150. That the

  1151. son of

  1152. man remained

  1153. spiritual

  1154. and never

  1155. came in a

  1156. physical form.

  1157. They were

  1158. separated.

  1159. So by

  1160. implication

  1161. our spiritual

  1162. beings

  1163. remain separate

  1164. from our

  1165. physical

  1166. being.

  1167. To be

  1168. more specific

  1169. the Antichrist

  1170. were teaching

  1171. that their

  1172. spiritual life

  1173. was disconnected

  1174. from their

  1175. physical

  1176. actions.

  1177. So they

  1178. could have

  1179. a pure

  1180. spiritual

  1181. life

  1182. and their

  1183. sinful

  1184. physical

  1185. actions

  1186. didn't

  1187. affect it.

  1188. They could

  1189. be righteous

  1190. but not

  1191. practice

  1192. righteousness.

  1193. John says

  1194. no,

  1195. this cannot

  1196. be.

  1197. The nature

  1198. of our

  1199. spiritual

  1200. life is

  1201. shown in

  1202. our physical

  1203. actions.

  1204. Who we

  1205. are in

  1206. our hearts

  1207. will come

  1208. out in

  1209. how we

  1210. act.

  1211. If you're

  1212. children of

  1213. God,

  1214. you will

  1215. act and

  1216. have a

  1217. life like

  1218. you were

  1219. a child

  1220. of God.

  1221. If you

  1222. are a

  1223. child of

  1224. the devil,

  1225. then you

  1226. will live

  1227. that way.

  1228. You will

  1229. practice

  1230. sinning.

  1231. You will

  1232. not want

  1233. the law

  1234. of God.

  1235. You will

  1236. want

  1237. lawlessness.

  1238. What we

  1239. believe

  1240. comes out

  1241. in how

  1242. we live.

  1243. If you

  1244. follow

  1245. righteousness,

  1246. that is

  1247. Jesus Christ,

  1248. then you

  1249. will practice

  1250. righteousness.

  1251. sinning.

  1252. The other

  1253. side of

  1254. that,

  1255. in verse

  1256. 8,

  1257. it says,

  1258. whoever makes

  1259. the practice

  1260. of sinning

  1261. is of

  1262. the devil.

  1263. For the

  1264. devil has

  1265. been doing

  1266. it from

  1267. the beginning.

  1268. Like we

  1269. read in

  1270. verse 4,

  1271. if you

  1272. practice

  1273. sinning,

  1274. you practice

  1275. lawlessness,

  1276. and that is

  1277. rebellion

  1278. towards God.

  1279. The rest

  1280. of verse

  1281. 8 says,

  1282. the reason

  1283. the Son of

  1284. God appeared

  1285. was to

  1286. destroy the

  1287. works of

  1288. the devil.

  1289. So he

  1290. came to

  1291. take away

  1292. sin,

  1293. we just

  1294. talked about

  1295. that,

  1296. and he

  1297. came to

  1298. destroy

  1299. lawlessness

  1300. and rebellion

  1301. against him.

  1302. Back in

  1303. verse 1,

  1304. we saw the

  1305. kind of love

  1306. that we've

  1307. been given.

  1308. We are

  1309. called a

  1310. child of

  1311. God.

  1312. In

  1313. verse 2,

  1314. called God's

  1315. children.

  1316. And now

  1317. in these last

  1318. two verses,

  1319. verses 9 and

  1320. 10,

  1321. John goes a

  1322. little deeper

  1323. with that

  1324. concept of

  1325. being a

  1326. child of

  1327. God.

  1328. Verse 9

  1329. says,

  1330. no one

  1331. born of

  1332. God,

  1333. meaning no

  1334. child of

  1335. God,

  1336. makes a

  1337. practice of

  1338. sinning.

  1339. This points

  1340. out what we

  1341. saw earlier,

  1342. that there's

  1343. a category of

  1344. people that

  1345. are born of

  1346. God.

  1347. It is those

  1348. who practice

  1349. righteousness.

  1350. Why?

  1351. It's not

  1352. because any

  1353. of us have

  1354. some innate

  1355. level of

  1356. righteousness in

  1357. ourselves.

  1358. Verse 9

  1359. goes on to

  1360. tell us,

  1361. it's because

  1362. God's seed

  1363. abides in

  1364. him.

  1365. The meaning

  1366. of that

  1367. could be a

  1368. couple different

  1369. things,

  1370. both of which

  1371. are true,

  1372. and they're

  1373. connected

  1374. together.

  1375. God's seed

  1376. could be the

  1377. word of

  1378. God that

  1379. brings salvation.

  1380. It could

  1381. mean the

  1382. presence of

  1383. the Holy

  1384. Spirit in

  1385. our life as

  1386. a Christian

  1387. that brings

  1388. about our

  1389. regeneration.

  1390. Both of

  1391. those are

  1392. actions that

  1393. take place

  1394. on every

  1395. person who

  1396. is born

  1397. again.

  1398. God's seed

  1399. abides in

  1400. him.

  1401. That is

  1402. born of

  1403. God,

  1404. and that's

  1405. why we

  1406. are called

  1407. children of

  1408. God.

  1409. 2 Corinthians

  1410. 5.17

  1411. says,

  1412. therefore,

  1413. if anyone

  1414. is in

  1415. Christ,

  1416. he is a

  1417. new creation.

  1418. Old has

  1419. passed away,

  1420. behold,

  1421. the new

  1422. has come.

  1423. We cannot

  1424. keep sinning

  1425. and be

  1426. born of

  1427. God,

  1428. just like

  1429. we cannot

  1430. abide in

  1431. Christ and

  1432. continue to

  1433. walk in

  1434. sin.

  1435. it is

  1436. from your

  1437. life,

  1438. your

  1439. actions,

  1440. even the

  1441. intents of

  1442. your heart,

  1443. because we

  1444. can't all see

  1445. each other's

  1446. heart.

  1447. We can

  1448. be seething

  1449. one another.

  1450. We can

  1451. look good,

  1452. but have a

  1453. sinful heart.

  1454. In those

  1455. things,

  1456. in our

  1457. actions,

  1458. in our

  1459. intents,

  1460. and in

  1461. our life,

  1462. we show

  1463. who we

  1464. are.

  1465. Verse 10

  1466. says,

  1467. by this,

  1468. practicing

  1469. righteousness,

  1470. or practicing

  1471. sin,

  1472. is evident

  1473. who are

  1474. the children

  1475. of God

  1476. and who

  1477. are the

  1478. children of

  1479. the devil.

  1480. Whoever does

  1481. not practice

  1482. righteousness

  1483. is not of

  1484. God,

  1485. nor is the

  1486. one who

  1487. does not

  1488. love his

  1489. brother.

  1490. So as we

  1491. look at

  1492. this passage,

  1493. as we see

  1494. that John

  1495. wants to

  1496. warn us

  1497. against this

  1498. deception

  1499. of the

  1500. Antichrists

  1501. that are

  1502. among us,

  1503. and wants

  1504. to remind

  1505. us of

  1506. the hope

  1507. we have

  1508. in following

  1509. Christ.

  1510. Our

  1511. question

  1512. today to

  1513. think about

  1514. is,

  1515. what do we

  1516. practice?

  1517. What do

  1518. you practice?

  1519. Do you

  1520. practice

  1521. righteousness?

  1522. Do you

  1523. practice

  1524. holiness?

  1525. Do you

  1526. practice

  1527. those things

  1528. because you

  1529. have a

  1530. God who

  1531. died for

  1532. you and

  1533. is coming

  1534. back for

  1535. you,

  1536. who has

  1537. called you

  1538. a child

  1539. of God

  1540. and loves

  1541. you?

  1542. Or do

  1543. you

  1544. practice

  1545. sinning?

  1546. Do you

  1547. practice doing

  1548. the things

  1549. that you

  1550. want to

  1551. do and

  1552. not living

  1553. for God?

  1554. Do you

  1555. work at

  1556. making

  1557. righteousness

  1558. your habit,

  1559. your routine

  1560. for living?

  1561. God,

  1562. let's

  1563. close in

  1564. prayer.

  1565. Lord,

  1566. thank you

  1567. for your

  1568. word.

  1569. Thank you

  1570. for the

  1571. promises

  1572. that you

  1573. give us

  1574. of what

  1575. it is to

  1576. be a

  1577. child of

  1578. God.

  1579. And Lord,

  1580. at the same

  1581. time,

  1582. we need

  1583. correction

  1584. to keep

  1585. us from

  1586. doing what

  1587. we want

  1588. to do,

  1589. going after

  1590. the things

  1591. of this

  1592. world that

  1593. bring death,

  1594. going after

  1595. things that

  1596. pull us

  1597. away from

  1598. who you

  1599. are.

  1600. So Lord,

  1601. we pray

  1602. that you

  1603. would help

  1604. us as

  1605. we think

  1606. about this

  1607. passage,

  1608. as we

  1609. meditate on

  1610. the thought

  1611. of what

  1612. we worship

  1613. and where

  1614. do we

  1615. abide?

  1616. Do we

  1617. abide in

  1618. sin?

  1619. Do we

  1620. abide in

  1621. righteousness?

  1622. Do we

  1623. look to

  1624. you at

  1625. a time

  1626. where we

  1627. can see

  1628. no hope

  1629. in anything

  1630. else?

  1631. When things

  1632. that we

  1633. thought were

  1634. solid begin

  1635. to fade

  1636. away and

  1637. are taken

  1638. away from

  1639. us?

  1640. Does our

  1641. trust and

  1642. our hope

  1643. in you

  1644. remain

  1645. knowing

  1646. that you

  1647. have given

  1648. us eternal

  1649. life?

  1650. Knowing that

  1651. you have

  1652. called us

  1653. children of

  1654. God?

  1655. And so

  1656. we are.

  1657. Lord, I

  1658. pray that you

  1659. would help

  1660. us with

  1661. that.

  1662. I pray that

  1663. you would

  1664. comfort us

  1665. in those

  1666. truths this

  1667. morning,

  1668. Lord.

  1669. We pray

  1670. these things

  1671. in your

  1672. holy name.

  1673. Amen.

  1674. Amen.
