  1. Heavenly Father, we long to see

  2. your name exalted

  3. and the pride of man humbled.

  4. And that's the aim of this psalm.

  5. So Lord,

  6. we pray that you would

  7. humble us and bring us down so low

  8. to a point where we accurately

  9. assess who we are

  10. in light of how great you are.

  11. So that in our humility, in our

  12. emptiness,

  13. you might exalt us,

  14. you might fill us,

  15. you might be all in all.

  16. That you might finally receive the glory

  17. that is due to your name in our lives.

  18. In Jesus' name we pray.

  19. Amen.

  20. Psalm 127, verses 1 to 5.

    Psalms 127 chapter mention

  21. Unless the Lord builds the house,

  22. those who build it labor in vain.

  23. Unless the Lord watches over the city,

  24. the watchman stays awake in vain.

  25. It is in vain that you rise up early

  26. and go lay to rest,

  27. eating the bread of anxious toil.

  28. For he gives to his beloved sleep.

  29. Behold,

  30. children are a heritage from the Lord,

  31. the fruit of the womb,

  32. a reward.

  33. Like arrows in the hand of a warrior

  34. are the children of one's youth.

  35. Blessed is the man

  36. who fills his quiver with them.

  37. He shall not be put to shame

  38. when he speaks with his enemies

  39. in the gate.

  40. This is God's holy and authoritative word.

  41. There's a famous saying

  42. that you guys may have heard of.

  43. It says,

  44. Man proposes,

  45. but the Lord disposes.

  46. It's a famous translation

  47. of a Latin phrase

  48. that Thomas DeCempis

  49. made famous through his book,

  50. The Imitation of Christ.

  51. The Imitation of Christ.

  52. It's really a distillation

  53. of Proverbs 19, 21,

  54. which many of you are familiar with.

  55. Many are the plans

  56. in the mind of a man,

  57. but it is the purpose of the Lord

  58. that will stand.

  59. Because there is a widespread illusion

  60. among humankind

  61. that we are masters of our own fate.

  62. But the truth is that we control

  63. an infinitesimally small fraction,

  64. a small fraction of the myriad factors

  65. in life, in the world,

  66. in society,

  67. and around us

  68. that affect us,

  69. influence us.

  70. In fact,

  71. we are not in control at all

  72. if we really reflect on that reality.

  73. And Psalm 127

  74. is a timely reminder of that,

  75. that we should engage

  76. all of our endeavors

  77. with conscious dependence on the Lord.

  78. The first two verses,

  79. the first trophy,

  80. talks about the vanity

  81. of self-sufficiency.

  82. And then verses three to five

  83. talk about the blessedness

  84. of God dependency.

  85. So let's look at verses one to two.

  86. First,

  87. it repeats the phrase

  88. in vain three times.

  89. Unless the Lord builds the house,

  90. those who build it labor in vain.

  91. Unless the Lord watches over the city,

  92. the watchman stays awake in vain.

  93. It is in vain that you rise up early

  94. and go late to rest,

  95. eating the bread of anxious toil,

  96. for he gives to his beloved sleep.

  97. The word vanity here

  98. means worthlessness

  99. or futility,

  100. that it's futile,

  101. that it is for naught,

  102. it's a waste

  103. to engage in these activities

  104. apart from the Lord's superintendence.

  105. First,

  106. it says,

  107. unless the Lord builds the house,

  108. those who build it labor in vain.

  109. The Hebrew word for house

  110. is often used in scripture

  111. to refer to God's temple,

  112. the house of God.

  113. And for a number of reasons,

  114. I think that's the original context

  115. in which this psalm was composed.

  116. And I think it had the house

  117. and the household of God

  118. in view at first.

  119. First,

  120. if you look at

  121. the subtitle of the psalm,

  122. we know that it belongs

  123. to a collection

  124. that we've been in

  125. for a few months now,

  126. the Songs of Ascent,

  127. Psalms 120 to 134.

  128. The consistent theme

  129. of all the psalms

  130. in this collection,

  131. Songs of Ascent,

  132. is that it captures

  133. a longing

  134. for Jerusalem

  135. and for God's temple.

  136. It depicts

  137. this metaphorical

  138. ascent

  139. toward the dwelling place

  140. of God.

  141. And secondly,

  142. the rest of the subtitle

  143. says,

  144. of Solomon.

  145. So,

  146. this means

  147. either that Solomon

  148. composed the psalm

  149. or that the psalm

  150. deals with the circumstances

  151. that are related

  152. to Solomon.

  153. And verse 1

  154. can be referring

  155. to the time

  156. when Solomon,

  157. of course,

  158. was building up

  159. Jerusalem

  160. and constructing

  161. the temple of God,

  162. the house of God.

  163. And then,

  164. thirdly,

  165. verse 2 says,

  166. the Lord gives

  167. to his beloved

  168. sleep.

  169. The phrase,

  170. his beloved,

  171. is likely

  172. a reference

  173. to Solomon

  174. because we know

  175. from 2 Samuel

    2 Samuel 12:24

  176. chapter 12

  177. verse 24

  178. and 25

  179. that the Lord's

  180. beloved

  181. is Solomon's

  182. nickname.

  183. It says

  184. in that passage,

  185. in that verse,

  186. 2 Samuel 12,

  187. 24,

  188. 25,

  189. the Lord loved

  190. Solomon

  191. and sent the message

  192. by Nathan the prophet.

  193. So,

  194. he called his name,

  195. Solomon's name,

  196. Jedediah

  197. because of the Lord.

  198. Jedediah means,

  199. literally,

  200. the Lord's beloved.

  201. It's the same word

  202. that's used here

  203. in this psalm.

  204. So,

  205. the subtitle

  206. gives us a clue

  207. to that,

  208. of Solomon.

  209. So,

  210. if Solomon wrote

  211. Psalm 127

  212. as the subtitle

  213. seems to suggest

  214. or if that's

  215. the original background

  216. in which the psalm

  217. was written,

  218. Solomon understood

  219. that unless

  220. the Lord

  221. builds his house,

  222. unless the Lord

  223. watches over his city,

  224. even the diligent

  225. construction efforts

  226. by the greatest

  227. architects

  228. and engineers

  229. and craftsmen,

  230. builders,

  231. even the vigilant

  232. defense of

  233. the bravest

  234. military

  235. would be for nothing.

  236. It would all be waste.

  237. But this doesn't mean

  238. that the psalm

  239. only applies

  240. to Solomon's

  241. original context.

  242. We know that

  243. this poem

  244. was included

  245. in the Psalter

  246. for God's people

  247. to use

  248. in corporate worship

  249. for generations

  250. to come.

  251. So,

  252. we know that's not

  253. the only context

  254. in which it applies.

  255. The word house

  256. is generic.

  257. It can refer

  258. not only to God's temple,

  259. but it can also refer

  260. to people's houses,

  261. literal,

  262. physical houses,

  263. or to their households,

  264. their families.

  265. And the rest of the psalm

  266. does seem to apply

  267. the phrase more

  268. generically in that way,

  269. to build a house

  270. in a metaphorical sense

  271. of building one's family

  272. as well.

  273. And so then,

  274. we can apply this

  275. to our own lives

  276. in a number of ways,

  277. and we could ask ourselves

  278. the questions

  279. like this,

  280. what is the house

  281. that you are laboring

  282. to build in your life?

  283. What is the city

  284. that you are watching

  285. over in your life?

  286. What do you worry

  287. about in life?

  288. However you answer

  289. that question,

  290. if the Lord

  291. is not in the picture,

  292. this psalm is telling us

  293. that it's in vain,

  294. it's futile,

  295. worthless.

  296. If we examine our lives,

  297. I think often

  298. we substitute

  299. our own names

  300. in the place of the Lord.

  301. If you look at verse 1,

  302. unless Sean

  303. builds the house,

  304. those who build it

  305. labor in vain.

  306. Unless Sean

  307. watches over the city,

  308. the watchman

  309. stays awake in vain.

  310. That's what I do sometimes

  311. in my sinfulness,

  312. right?

  313. What arrogance

  314. and self-importance

  315. we are obsessed

  316. with how vital

  317. we are

  318. to our families

  319. and to our society,

  320. but the Lord says,

  321. no,

  322. that's not the truth.

  323. Unless the Lord

  324. builds the house,

  325. those who build it

  326. labor in vain.

  327. Unless the Lord

  328. watches over the city,

  329. the watchman

  330. stays awake in vain.

  331. Unless the Lord

  332. builds the church,

  333. all pastors

  334. labor in vain.

  335. we are not in control

  336. of our own lives.

  337. Our strict diet,

  338. exercise regimen

  339. for our health

  340. and well-being

  341. can be derailed

  342. by cancer

  343. or a car wreck.

  344. Our disciplined study

  345. and diligent work

  346. for our career success

  347. can be derailed

  348. by a recession.

  349. Our best laid plans

  350. can be derailed

  351. by a pandemic.

  352. And these are only

  353. the most dramatic

  354. examples, right?

  355. There are countless ways

  356. to demonstrate

  357. that we are simply

  358. not in control

  359. of our own lives.

  360. Now,

  361. I'm not saying

  362. forget about these things

  363. altogether.

  364. We should work diligently.

  365. We should take care

  366. of ourselves.

  367. We should be prudent.

  368. I mean,

  369. eating Oreos

  370. and drinking Coca-Cola

  371. every day,

  372. trusting that God's

  373. going to keep you healthy

  374. is not faith.

  375. That's presumption,

  376. right?

  377. That's not entrusting

  378. ourselves to God's

  379. purposes and priorities.

  380. That's co-opting God

  381. for our purposes

  382. and priorities, right?

  383. Similarly,

  384. being irresponsible

  385. during a pandemic

  386. and attending

  387. packed rock concerts

  388. and playing flag football

  389. with a whole bunch

  390. of people,

  391. presuming upon God's

  392. extraordinary protection

  393. while neglecting

  394. the ordinary means

  395. of protection

  396. that he has given us

  397. is not faith

  398. but presumption.

  399. It's difficult

  400. to balance this sometimes

  401. because presumption

  402. often masquerades

  403. as faith

  404. and faithlessness

  405. often masquerades

  406. as wisdom.

  407. And Numbers 13-14

  408. give us a good example

  409. give us good examples

  410. of both.

  411. After the Israelite spies

  412. returned from

  413. surveying the land

  414. of Canaan,

  415. the land that the Lord

  416. had promised to give them,

  417. they bring a

  418. discouraging report

  419. saying,

  420. all the people

  421. we saw in it

  422. are of great height

  423. and there we saw

  424. the Nephilim,

  425. the sons of Anak

  426. who come from the Nephilim

  427. and we seem to ourselves

  428. like grasshoppers

  429. and so we seem to them.

  430. So think about it

  431. from a worldly perspective.

  432. Would you want to go

  433. fighting against

  434. a society full of

  435. LeBron Jameses?

  436. Would you want to fight

  437. against a society

  438. full of Olympic athletes

  439. even when they

  440. outnumber you?

  441. That makes no sense.

  442. That is stupid.

  443. That is worldly-wise foolish.

  444. And so at that point

  445. people lose courage

  446. and rebel against the Lord

  447. saying it would have been

  448. better for them

  449. to stay in Egypt

  450. but Joshua and Caleb

  451. challenged them saying,

  452. the land which we

  453. passed through

  454. to spy it out

  455. is an exceedingly good land.

  456. If the Lord delights in us

  457. He will bring us

  458. into this land

  459. and give it to us.

  460. A land that flows

  461. with milk and honey.

  462. Only do not rebel

  463. against the Lord

  464. and do not fear

  465. the people of the land

  466. for they are bred for us.

  467. Literally,

  468. that's like,

  469. I guess that's Hebrew idiom

  470. for saying piece of cake.

  471. You know,

  472. they're bred for us.

  473. Their protection

  474. is removed from them

  475. and the Lord is with us.

  476. Do not fear them.

  477. Now the people,

  478. however,

  479. don't listen to Joshua

  480. and Caleb

  481. and they try instead

  482. to stone him to death

  483. forcing the Lord

  484. to intervene

  485. and show up in His glory

  486. to put the fear of God

  487. back into their hearts.

  488. And as a punishment

  489. for their faithfulness

  490. the Lord decrees

  491. that Israel will have to

  492. wander the wilderness

  493. for 40 years

  494. and none of the people

  495. who grumbled against Him

  496. will enter the promised land.

  497. Only their children

  498. and Joshua and Caleb

  499. who are faithful to Him.

  500. And now at that point

  501. people regret

  502. what they have done

  503. and they proceed

  504. to march toward battle

  505. against the Amalekites

  506. and the Canaanites

  507. despite the fact

  508. that the Lord

  509. had already declared

  510. that He's no longer

  511. with them in battle.

  512. And so it says

  513. in Numbers 14

    Numbers 14:44–45

  514. verses 44 to 45

  515. Now this episode

  516. is a picture of a contrast

  517. between faith

  518. and presumption.

  519. Joshua and Caleb

  520. had faith

  521. that God would give them

  522. victory in line

  523. with His purposes

  524. and priorities.

  525. The people of Israel

  526. on the other hand

  527. vacillated between

  528. faithlessness

  529. and presumption

  530. which are actually

  531. two sides of the same coin

  532. because both have man

  533. rather than God

  534. at the center

  535. of their outlook.

  536. Measuring their military strength

  537. up against that

  538. of the Canaanites

  539. and judging their prospect

  540. for victory

  541. purely in human terms

  542. without putting God

  543. in the equation

  544. and then losing courage

  545. and refusing to go up

  546. in the battle.

  547. That's faithlessness.

  548. Of course

  549. from the point

  550. of worldly wisdom

  551. it was stupid

  552. and foolish

  553. to fight

  554. when your strength

  555. is small

  556. compared to that

  557. of your enemies

  558. but it's not stupid

  559. if God is on your side.

  560. Likewise

  561. insisting on

  562. going up into battle

  563. when you are outnumbered

  564. and when you don't have

  565. God's special assurance

  566. of deliverance

  567. thinking that you could win

  568. that's presumption.

  569. we have to avoid both.

  570. Now in our area

  571. where we live

  572. in Cambridge

  573. a city full of

  574. competent people

  575. self-sufficient people

  576. we more often find

  577. faithlessness

  578. masquerading as

  579. wisdom.

  580. Many people are anxious

  581. and fearful

  582. because they believe

  583. that they are

  584. masters of their own fate

  585. and that is

  586. the truth

  587. if you

  588. come to grip

  589. with it

  590. a terrifying possibility

  591. if that is true.

  592. But verse 2

  593. exhorts us otherwise

  594. it says

  595. it is in vain

  596. that you rise up early

  597. and go late to rest

  598. eating the bread

  599. of anxious toil

  600. for he gives

  601. to his beloved sleep.

  602. So let me ask you

  603. these questions

  604. what keeps you up

  605. at night?

  606. What preoccupies you

  607. with anxiety?

  608. maybe it is

  609. what people think

  610. of you

  611. maybe

  612. it is

  613. concern of

  614. keeping yourself

  615. and or your family

  616. and friends

  617. healthy

  618. maybe it is

  619. making sure

  620. that you are

  621. getting paid

  622. and putting food

  623. on the table

  624. maybe it is

  625. advancing your career

  626. being successful

  627. you might

  628. you know

  629. be more careful

  630. with sanitary things

  631. and social distancing

  632. than anybody else

  633. in the world

  634. you might work

  635. more hours

  636. than anybody else

  637. in the world

  638. you might study

  639. harder than anybody

  640. else in the world

  641. you might be more

  642. gifted than anybody

  643. else in the world

  644. but it is all in vain

  645. if the Lord

  646. is not with you

  647. in your endeavors

  648. that is the vanity

  649. of self-sufficiency

  650. especially for the Christian

  651. and then in contrast

  652. in verses 3-5

  653. the psalmist

  654. gives us this picture

  655. of the blessedness

  656. of God dependency

  657. he says

  658. behold

  659. children are a heritage

  660. from the Lord

  661. the fruit of the womb

  662. a reward

  663. notice the contrast

  664. in verse

  665. between verse 2

  666. and verse 3

  667. it's described

  668. as the bread

  669. of anxious toil

  670. that we lose sleep over

  671. always toiling

  672. trying to earn our way

  673. towards survival

  674. and self-adventment

  675. and contrast

  676. that with the phrase

  677. of verse 3

  678. the fruit of the womb

  679. of reward

  680. not anxious toil

  681. but a reward

  682. that God graciously gives

  683. and this is the picture

  684. of what happens

  685. when the Lord

  686. builds a house

  687. the Lord builds

  688. the household

  689. children are a heritage

  690. through the womb

  691. a reward

  692. it's given by the Lord

  693. not earned

  694. by clawing our way

  695. and pulling ourselves

  696. up by our own

  697. bootstraps

  698. and then verse 4

  699. continues

  700. so the two images

  701. of building one's house

  702. and one's household

  703. and of watching

  704. over a city

  705. guarding a city

  706. in verse 1

  707. both of those

  708. have their kind of

  709. matching sections

  710. in verses 3 to 5

  711. children are heritage

  712. fruit of the womb

  713. of reward

  714. and our children

  715. that we're blessed with

  716. when we're in our youth

  717. they grow up

  718. and are able to

  719. stand with us

  720. to defend us

  721. and to come by our side

  722. like arrows

  723. in the hand of a warrior

  724. this is the city

  725. this is the household

  726. that is built up securely

  727. that is protected

  728. by the Lord

  729. and that is described

  730. not as in vain

  731. it's not vanity

  732. but rather it is

  733. blessedness

  734. our own striving

  735. and our own

  736. and our own

  737. self-sufficiency

  738. is vanity

  739. but our striving

  740. in the Lord

  741. in God dependency

  742. is blessedness

  743. verse 5

  744. blessed is the man

  745. who fills his quiver

  746. with them

  747. he shall not be put

  748. to shame

  749. when he speaks

  750. with his enemies

  751. in the gate

  752. and

  753. and ultimately

  754. like all the psalms

  755. and like all

  756. passages of scripture

  757. this is fulfilled

  758. in the Lord Jesus

  759. who is the

  760. who is described

  761. in 1 Corinthians

  762. as the builder

  763. the one

  764. who

  765. who

  766. who builds

  767. the household

  768. of God

  769. ultimately

  770. in

  771. in the

  772. strength of the Lord

  773. in the spirit

  774. of the Lord

  775. and he

  776. does everything

  777. well

  778. and

  779. and he

  780. was a picture

  781. during his life

  782. of being completely

  783. entrusted to his father

  784. saying and doing

  785. only what he saw

  786. his father say

  787. and do

  788. and

  789. and in

  790. in perfect

  791. example of that

  792. he died on the cross

  793. in obedience to the father

  794. in perfect submission

  795. not

  796. not working

  797. for the bread

  798. of anxious toil

  799. but trusting

  800. his father

  801. resting in him

  802. and out of that

  803. came

  804. the fruitful

  805. the fruit of the womb

  806. a reward

  807. the fruit of many children

  808. in the household of God

  809. all of our salvation

  810. and

  811. and

  812. and that is what

  813. gives us all

  814. when we hope

  815. that even

  816. even

  817. when

  818. the circumstances

  819. in this world

  820. are not ideal

  821. even when things

  822. are not going

  823. the way we would like

  824. it is

  825. God dependency

  826. that is blessed

  827. not self-sufficiency

  828. and

  829. and when we trust in him

  830. and live in that way

  831. God

  832. we

  833. our lives too

  834. will be fruitful

  835. in much the same way

  836. Jesus life

  837. even though it may have

  838. looked like

  839. a tragedy

  840. from a worldly

  841. point of view

  842. was fruitful

  843. towards salvation

  844. of many

  845. so let's

  846. um
