  1. God, it's so easy

  2. to get lost in the delusions of our own grandeur.

  3. To think that we must be involved in everything.

  4. We must have an opinion about everything.

  5. That we must control everything.

  6. But Lord, you alone are sovereign.

  7. You alone are king.

  8. And you have assigned to us

  9. our particular set of responsibilities,

  10. roles, relationships

  11. to be faithful in.

  12. And you call us to childlike faith

  13. to entrust the rest to you.

  14. Teach us that humility.

  15. Give us that faith this morning

  16. as we hear from you

  17. and from your word in Proverbs 6,

    Proverbs 6:1–19

  18. verses 1 to 19.

  19. In Jesus' holy name we pray.

  20. Amen.

  21. We're in Proverbs 6,

    Proverbs 6:1–19

  22. verses 1 to 19.

  23. I will read it out loud for us.

  24. My son,

  25. if you have put up security for your neighbor,

  26. have given your pledge for a stranger,

  27. if you are snared in the words of your mouth,

  28. caught in the words of your mouth,

  29. then do this, my son,

  30. and save yourself,

  31. for you have come into the hand of your neighbor.

  32. Go hasten and plead urgently with your neighbor.

  33. Give your eyes no sleep

  34. and your eyelids no slumber.

  35. Save yourself like a gazelle

  36. from the hand of the hunter,

  37. like a bird from the hand of the fowler.

  38. Go to the ant, O sluggard.

  39. Consider her ways and be wise.

  40. Without having any chief officer or ruler,

  41. she prepares her bread in summer

  42. and gathers her food in harvest.

  43. How long will you lie there, O sluggard?

  44. When will you arise from your sleep?

  45. A little sleep,

  46. a little slumber,

  47. a little folding of the hands to rest,

  48. and poverty will come upon you like a robber

  49. and want like an armed man.

  50. A worthless person,

  51. a wicked man,

  52. goes about with crooked speech,

  53. winks with his eyes,

  54. signals with his feet,

  55. points with his finger,

  56. with perverted heart,

  57. devises evil,

  58. continually sowing discord.

  59. Therefore calamity will come upon him

  60. suddenly.

  61. In a moment,

  62. he will be broken beyond healing.

  63. There are six things that the Lord hates.

  64. Seven that are an abomination to him.

  65. Haughty eyes,

  66. a lying tongue,

  67. and hands that shed innocent blood.

  68. A heart that devises wicked plans,

  69. feet that makes haste to run to evil.

  70. A false witness who breathes out lies

  71. and one who sows discord among brothers.

  72. This is God's holy and authoritative word.

  73. This is an unusual passage

  74. because it's sandwiched between two long sections

  75. that are both warnings against adultery.

  76. So Proverbs 5,

  77. that Ray preached on last week,

  78. and Proverbs 6, 20 to 7, 27.

  79. And you wonder what it's doing here

  80. between these two passages.

  81. But there is a thematic connection.

  82. Proverbs 5 warned in verse 3 and verse 20

  83. of a forbidden woman,

  84. which means literally a strange woman,

  85. as Ray pointed out last week.

  86. A woman that is strange

  87. rather than known or familiar to you

  88. because she is another man's wife.

  89. And to bolster this argument,

  90. Proverbs 5, verse 10,

    Proverbs 5:10

  91. once again used the word stranger

  92. and said this to paraphrase,

  93. you wouldn't labor long and hard

  94. only to see all the fruit and income

  95. of your labor go to the strangers,

  96. would you?

  97. And Proverbs 5, 17 added,

  98. should your springs be scattered abroad,

  99. streams of water in the streets?

  100. Let them be for yourself alone

  101. and not for strangers with you.

  102. So it's a recurring theme,

  103. a running theme that unites these passages,

  104. the thing of the identity of a stranger.

  105. That's in fact the main argument of chapter 5,

  106. that to commit adultery

  107. is to transgress your own boundary,

  108. that to move beyond what is rightfully yours,

  109. to infringe upon what is rightfully another's.

  110. Because as 1 Corinthians 7, verse 4 teaches us,

    1 Corinthians 7:4

  111. when you get married,

  112. the husband's body does not belong to him anymore,

  113. it belongs to his wife.

  114. And the wife's body does not belong to her anyway,

  115. it belongs to her husband.

  116. And so when you get married,

  117. you belong to one another

  118. and there's this mutuality and interdependence.

  119. And when you tamper with another man's wife

  120. or another woman's husband,

  121. you violate that sacred mutuality and interdependence.

  122. And so I don't know if you've ever gotten into a wrong car in the parking lot

  123. because it looked exactly like yours or tried to get in.

  124. I mean, one time a car with the exact same make and model and color as mine

  125. was for some reason parked right next to mine at Market Basket.

  126. And as I came out of Market Basket,

  127. this was at the time my key fob battery was dead.

  128. So I was using a manual key to open it.

  129. And here I might try to open this car and it wouldn't turn,

  130. the key wouldn't turn.

  131. And so I looked more closely at the car

  132. and recognized a scratch I'd never seen before.

  133. And now I'm getting frustrated.

  134. Did someone just scratch my car and leave?

  135. And then, of course, to my relief,

  136. I realized it's actually not my car at all.

  137. And my car was right next to it.

  138. And, of course, as soon as I realized that I was kind of looking around

  139. because I'm a little embarrassed, you know,

  140. you don't want to be seen trying to get into someone else's car.

  141. And the reason for that is because you have no business

  142. trying to get into someone else's car.

  143. It's not your car, right?

  144. And that's, but that's exactly what we do when we commit adultery.

  145. You have no business being in that relationship.

  146. It's not, that is not the relationship that God has put you in.

  147. You are transgressing the boundaries God's given you.

  148. We wouldn't ever think after a long day of work

  149. to go home to someone else's house to sleep.

  150. Not only would they call the police for intruding,

  151. but it's just not our place.

  152. It's not homey.

  153. We wouldn't rest it.

  154. We wouldn't think of it.

  155. But yet we often, in other areas of our life,

  156. think about things that way.

  157. We transgress the boundaries that God has given us.

  158. And so that was the main argument with chapter 5.

  159. Really, the main argument against adultery in Proverbs chapter 5

    Proverbs 5 chapter mention

  160. was mind your own business.

  161. Spouses have a mutual obligation to one another,

  162. and whether you have consent or not

  163. with a married woman or married man does not justify it

  164. because there's a sanctity of marriage that has been established.

  165. You have no business meddling in that relationship.

  166. And chapter 6 is actually continuing that same theme.

  167. So in verses 1 to 5, it tells us to mind our own business,

  168. to not become a surety to a stranger's debt.

  169. Don't co-sign a stranger's loan.

  170. Verses 6 to 11 tell us to mind our own business,

  171. to put our heads down and go to work,

  172. to make provisions for our own life instead of being a slugger

  173. that does not work unless someone forces him to.

  174. Verses 12 to 19 tell us also to mind our own business,

  175. to not be an instigator that sows discord among brothers.

  176. So to summarize, the main point of this passage is

  177. mind your own business and attend to the responsibilities

  178. and relations God has given to you specifically.

  179. Now please don't misunderstand me.

  180. Sometimes we use that phrase, you know,

  181. mind your own business,

  182. to rebuff people who do rightfully have an interest in our lives.

  183. Like our own parents,

  184. our own spouses,

  185. our own bosses,

  186. our own brothers and sisters in Christ.

  187. If we tell these people to mind their own business,

  188. that's just selfish irresponsibility and rebellion.

  189. To mind our own business in a biblical sense

  190. is the opposite of selfish irresponsibility.

  191. It means to be responsible citizens.

  192. It means to fulfill our own obligations.

  193. It's what 1 Thessalonians chapter 4 verses 9 to 12 talk about.

    1 Thessalonians 4:9–12

  194. It says,

  195. Now concerning brotherly love,

  196. you have no need for anyone to write to you.

  197. For you yourselves have been taught by God to love one another.

  198. For that indeed is what you are doing

  199. to all the brothers throughout Macedonia.

  200. But we urge you brothers to do this more and more

  201. and to aspire to live quietly

  202. and to mind your own affairs

  203. and to work with your hands

  204. as we instructed you

  205. so that you may walk properly before outsiders

  206. and be dependent on no one.

  207. Notice that in that passage,

  208. this 1 Thessalonians chapter 4,

    1 Thessalonians 4 chapter mention

  209. that living quietly,

  210. minding our own affairs,

  211. working with our hands

  212. so that we may walk properly before outsiders

  213. and be dependent on no one,

  214. that these things are not a sign of selfishness

  215. but rather an expression of brotherly love.

  216. That's how that passage began.

  217. One of the important ways we love one another

  218. within the family of God

  219. is by faithfully fulfilling

  220. the responsibilities and roles

  221. God has given us particularly.

  222. And that faithfulness

  223. is born of faith in God's sovereignty

  224. that He is the one that's ultimately in charge

  225. and oversees all that we do not have our business in.

  226. And when we faithfully do that,

  227. this passage teaches us

  228. that in verses 1 to 5,

  229. that we will not be a surety.

  230. Verses 6 to 11,

  231. that we will not be a sluggard.

  232. And verses 12 to 19,

  233. that we will not be a sower of discord.

  234. So that's the way my outline

  235. as we go through this passage.

  236. So first,

  237. minding our own business

  238. and attending to the responsibilities

  239. and relations God has given us

  240. entails not becoming a surety.

  241. A surety is a person

  242. who makes him or herself

  243. a guarantor of another person's debt.

  244. A cosigner of a loan.

  245. It says in verses 1 to 3 of our passage,

  246. My son,

  247. if you have put up security for your neighbor,

  248. have given your pledge for a stranger,

  249. if you are snared in the words of your mouth,

  250. caught in the words of your mouth,

  251. then do this, my son,

  252. and save yourself,

  253. for you have come into the hand of your neighbor.

  254. Go,

  255. hasten and plead urgently with your neighbor.

  256. Now this is not,

  257. I want to add this important qualification,

  258. this is not a prohibition

  259. of helping and being generous to our neighbors.

  260. For example,

  261. Deuteronomy chapter 15,

    Deuteronomy 15:7–11

  262. verses 7 to 11,

  263. it specifically commands

  264. that if among you,

  265. one of your brothers should become poor

  266. in any of your towns within your land

  267. that the Lord your God is giving you,

  268. you shall not harden your heart

  269. or shut your hand against your poor brother,

  270. but you shall open your hand to him

  271. and lend him sufficient for his need,

  272. whatever it may be.

  273. Take care,

  274. lest there be an unworthy thought in your heart

  275. and say,

  276. the seventh ear,

  277. the ear of release is near,

  278. and your eye look grudgingly on your poor brother

  279. and you give him nothing.

  280. And he cry to the Lord against you

  281. and you be guilty of sin.

  282. You shall give to him freely

  283. and your heart shall not be grudging

  284. when you give to him

  285. because for this,

  286. the Lord your God will bless you

  287. in all your work

  288. and all that you undertake.

  289. For there will never cease to be poor in the land.

  290. Therefore,

  291. I command you,

  292. you shall open wide your hand to your brother,

  293. to the needy and to the poor in your land.

  294. So on the sabbatical year,

  295. to give you some Old Testament background,

  296. the seventh year,

  297. God's people were commanded

  298. to cancel the debt

  299. of all of their fellow Israelites.

  300. And God is saying in this passage

  301. that even when the sabbatical year

  302. is just around the corner,

  303. that his people should lend generously,

  304. knowing full well

  305. that they may never get the money back

  306. because of the sabbatical year.

  307. God always explicitly prohibited his people,

  308. on top of that,

  309. from charging interest on loans.

  310. Exodus 22, 25 says,

  311. if you lend money to any of my people with you

  312. who is poor,

  313. you shall not be like a money lender to him

  314. and you shall not exact interest from him.

  315. And of course,

  316. the goal of that command

  317. is to prohibit exploitation

  318. since those who seek to borrow money

  319. are usually the neediest people.

  320. That's why they're coming to you,

  321. to borrow money.

  322. And so it usually was considered unjust.

  323. It's an injustice,

  324. an exploitation of someone

  325. in their time of greatest need

  326. and that it actually worsened

  327. their financial condition

  328. instead of improving it.

  329. So that was the logic behind that.

  330. In certain cases,

  331. Israelites were allowed

  332. to demand securities for a loan.

  333. The security was usually a garment

  334. which represented the borrower himself,

  335. meaning that should the borrower

  336. fail to repay his debt,

  337. he would be pressed into servitude

  338. in order to render a service

  339. equal to the amount of the debt he owed.

  340. But even that practice

  341. was prohibited in scripture

  342. for certain more vulnerable populations.

  343. For example,

  344. Deuteronomy 24, verse 17 says,

    Deuteronomy 24:17

  345. you shall not pervert the justice

  346. due to the sojourner,

  347. a foreigner that doesn't have

  348. legal rights within the country,

  349. or to the fatherless,

  350. or take a widow's garment in pledge.

  351. The sojourners who lacked legal protection,

  352. orphans who lacked fatherly protection,

  353. widows who lacked their husband's provision

  354. and protection,

  355. were never in any circumstance

  356. to be taken advantage of.

  357. You are not allowed

  358. to take a security from them.

  359. And so,

  360. the Bible encourages

  361. love for neighbor

  362. and generosity toward the poor,

  363. and Proverbs chapter 6,

    Proverbs 6:1

  364. verse 1,

  365. does not contradict that.

  366. What's in view here

  367. is something different.

  368. It is warning against

  369. putting up security

  370. for your neighbor,

  371. on behalf of your neighbor.

  372. You're not lending here

  373. to a needy neighbor.

  374. You're not giving

  375. to a poor neighbor.

  376. You're, in essence,

  377. assuming their debt

  378. and taking full responsibility

  379. for their financial situation.

  380. And biblical wisdom literature

  381. consistently warns

  382. against that practice.

  383. And note the word

  384. at the end of verse 1

  385. that's parallel

  386. to the word neighbor.

  387. My son,

  388. if you have put up security

  389. for your neighbor,

  390. have given your pledge

  391. for a stranger.

  392. That should ring a bell

  393. because of all the connection

  394. to the theme of stranger

  395. we've seen in chapter 5.

  396. Stranger,

  397. that's the keyword

  398. that explains

  399. what he means

  400. by the word neighbor here

  401. because the word neighbor

  402. in Hebrew

  403. has a very wide

  404. semantic range.

  405. It can mean

  406. a lot of different things

  407. depending on its context.

  408. Similar to the English word friend,

  409. right?

  410. When you say

  411. a friend,

  412. you could mean

  413. an acquaintance,

  414. a Facebook friend

  415. that you have never seen before.

  416. Or you could mean

  417. a friend,

  418. meaning your best friend

  419. that you grew up with

  420. and is,

  421. is,

  422. has been,

  423. was in your wedding

  424. or is going to be

  425. in your wedding,

  426. right?

  427. So friend can mean

  428. a number of different things.

  429. Same thing with the word neighbor

  430. in scripture.

  431. And so the word neighbor here

  432. is given context

  433. by the word stranger.

  434. So this stranger

  435. is not someone

  436. that is familiar to you.

  437. This is not a brother

  438. that you are responsible for.

  439. This is someone

  440. that is not within

  441. your circle of relationships

  442. and responsibilities.

  443. Remember that

  444. in chapter five,

  445. the adulterous woman,

  446. another man's wife,

  447. was described

  448. as a strange woman.

  449. And Proverbs chapter 27,

    Proverbs 27:13

  450. verse 13

  451. makes a very interesting

  452. suggestive connection.

  453. It says,

  454. take a man's garment

  455. when he has put up security

  456. for a stranger

  457. and hold it in pledge

  458. when he puts up security

  459. for an adulteress.

  460. So what might,

  461. what might be in view here

  462. is that a seductive adulteress

  463. can lure a foolish man

  464. into putting up security

  465. for her debt.

  466. So if you're putting up security

  467. for your wife or sister,

  468. that's one thing.

  469. But for a stranger,

  470. for an adulteress,

  471. don't ever do that.

  472. That's what the problem,

  473. what this problem is saying.

  474. Let me ask you,

  475. have you ever rashly

  476. taken responsibility

  477. for something

  478. that is not

  479. your responsibility?

  480. Have you ever tried

  481. to play the hero

  482. in something

  483. that really

  484. is none of your business?

  485. Have you

  486. been out of your depths

  487. because you have been

  488. meddling in

  489. trying to control

  490. things that are

  491. outside of your control?

  492. The exhortation

  493. in this proverb

  494. is mind your own business

  495. and attend

  496. to the responsibilities

  497. and relations

  498. God has given you.

  499. And putting up security

  500. for a stranger

  501. is not one

  502. of those responsibilities.

  503. But if you've already

  504. done that,

  505. there's advice

  506. for you here too.

  507. If you have already

  508. done that,

  509. as verse 2 says,

  510. you've given your pledge

  511. for a stranger.

  512. If you are snared

  513. in the words of your mouth,

  514. caught in the words

  515. of your mouth,

  516. verse 3 says,

  517. then do this,

  518. my son,

  519. and save yourself.

  520. For you have come

  521. into the hand

  522. of your neighbor.

  523. Go hasten

  524. and plead urgently

  525. with your neighbor.

  526. The phrase,

  527. give your pledge,

  528. in verse 2,

  529. is literally,

  530. you know,

  531. clap your hand,

  532. you know,

  533. clap your hand

  534. in Hebrew.

  535. It's a gesture

  536. that people back then

  537. used to seal

  538. an agreement,

  539. much like nowadays

  540. we shake hands,

  541. right?

  542. And so,

  543. there's a word play

  544. then in verse 3,

  545. you have come

  546. into the hand

  547. of your neighbor.

  548. In other words,

  549. if you clap your hand

  550. to make yourself

  551. a surety for a stranger,

  552. you come into the hand

  553. under the power

  554. of that stranger.

  555. You have been snared

  556. or caught

  557. in the words

  558. of your mouth

  559. by what you said

  560. with your very own mouth.

  561. You have entrapped yourself.

  562. This is self-inflicted

  563. predicament.

  564. In order to save yourself

  565. from this

  566. unfortunate situation,

  567. you should go

  568. hasten

  569. and plead urgently

  570. with your neighbor.

  571. Now,

  572. you may have

  573. a footnote

  574. in your Bible

  575. next to the word

  576. hasten.

  577. The English

  578. standard version

  579. that I'm using

  580. as a footnote

  581. there,

  582. that the word

  583. can also be translated

  584. humble yourself.

  585. I think that's

  586. a better translation.

  587. The word that is

  588. translated as

  589. plead urgently

  590. and literally means

  591. to bother.

  592. So,

  593. if you take those things,

  594. the New American Standard

  595. Bible translates

  596. the end of verse 3

  597. this way,

  598. I think is very

  599. helpful,

  600. accurate.

  601. It says,

  602. Go,

  603. humble yourself

  604. and importune

  605. your brother.

  606. Importune your brother.

  607. It means to humble yourself

  608. and plead urgently

  609. and persistently

  610. even to the point

  611. of embarrassment.

  612. Like the importunate widow

  613. in Luke 18

    Luke 18:1–8

  614. verses 1-8

  615. who persistently

  616. pleads for justice

  617. to a wicked judge

  618. so that the judge,

  619. even though he has

  620. no regard for God

  621. or humanity,

  622. he says,

  623. because this widow

  624. keeps bothering me,

  625. I will give her justice

  626. so that she will not

  627. beat me down

  628. by her continual coming.

  629. So,

  630. that's what Proverbs

    Proverbs 6:3

  631. chapter 6 verse 3

  632. is telling us to do.

  633. The stranger

  634. that you put up security

  635. for is obviously

  636. not going to be eager

  637. to release you

  638. so plead urgently

  639. and persistently

  640. and shamelessly

  641. so that he or she

  642. might release you

  643. from the legal obligation

  644. before the payment

  645. is due.

  646. Now,

  647. the father continues

  648. his admonition

  649. in verses 4-5.

  650. Give your eyes

  651. no slumber,

  652. no sleep,

  653. and your eyelids

  654. no slumber.

  655. Save yourself

  656. like a gazelle

  657. from the hand

  658. of the hunter,

  659. like a bird

  660. from the hand

  661. of the fowler.

  662. Once again,

  663. the word hand

  664. is repeated.

  665. You see it four times

  666. in these first five verses.

  667. At first,

  668. the son foolishly

  669. clapped his hand

  670. in pledge

  671. so that he came

  672. into the hand

  673. of his neighbor.

  674. Now,

  675. he must free himself

  676. from this trap

  677. like a gazelle

  678. from the hand

  679. of the hunter,

  680. like a bird

  681. from the hand

  682. of the fowler.

  683. It's the stranger's hand

  684. that's in view here

  685. that he must escape

  686. like a gazelle

  687. or the bird from.

  688. And this extended metaphor

  689. of hunting

  690. and being hunted

  691. and caught

  692. and ensnared

  693. is really helpful

  694. because it inverts

  695. the assumed

  696. power dynamic.

  697. Right?

  698. When you put up

  699. security for a stranger,

  700. when you co-sign a loan,

  701. it makes you feel like

  702. you are in charge.

  703. Right?

  704. It makes you feel like

  705. you are the benefactor

  706. and that this debtor

  707. is subject

  708. to your goodwill.

  709. But in reality,

  710. what this passage

  711. is teaching us

  712. is when you put up

  713. security for a stranger,

  714. you become the subject

  715. to his goodwill.

  716. You are now

  717. his beneficiary.

  718. He has successfully

  719. ensnared you

  720. and you will be impoverished

  721. if he refuses

  722. to repay his own debt.

  723. So moments ago,

  724. he was begging you

  725. to put up security

  726. for him,

  727. but now you must

  728. beg him

  729. to release you.

  730. That's the folly

  731. of becoming a surety.

  732. Instead,

  733. it says,

  734. we should mind

  735. our own business

  736. and attend

  737. to the responsibilities

  738. and relations

  739. God has given to us.

  740. Right?

  741. I mean,

  742. think about how urgent

  743. this is.

  744. A bird caught

  745. by the fowler

  746. is not going to say,

  747. well,

  748. let me take a nap first

  749. and finish eating this food

  750. and then try to flee.

  751. Right?

  752. I mean,

  753. that's not how you think

  754. when you're trapped.

  755. Similarly,

  756. you should think about it

  757. that way.

  758. If you have come under,

  759. pledge,

  760. if you become a surety,

  761. give your eyes no sleep,

  762. your eyes no slumber,

  763. you have been trapped.

  764. Extricate yourself

  765. as soon as you possibly can.

  766. It's the first order

  767. of business.

  768. And he says,

  769. untimely sleep

  770. and dilly-dallying

  771. and procrastination

  772. and laziness

  773. can ruin you.

  774. And that thought

  775. of untimely sleep

  776. and laziness

  777. and procrastination,

  778. it prompts the father

  779. to warn the son

  780. against being a sluggard

  781. in verses 6 to 11.

  782. That's my second point.

  783. He says in verses 6 to 8,

  784. Go to the aunt,

  785. O sluggard,

  786. consider her ways

  787. and be wise.

  788. Without having any chief officer

  789. or ruler,

  790. she prepares her bread

  791. in summer

  792. and gathers her food

  793. in harvest.

  794. Now,

  795. he uses

  796. a form of direct address.

  797. He says,

  798. O sluggard,

  799. in order to dramatize

  800. and emphasize this warning.

  801. But the implied audience

  802. is still the son.

  803. He doesn't want the son

  804. to become like the sluggard.

  805. So he says,

  806. Go to the aunt,

  807. you know,

  808. waking him up

  809. from his slumber.

  810. Go.

  811. Consider her ways

  812. and be wise.

  813. The father points out

  814. that an aunt

  815. gathers and stores grain

  816. during the summer

  817. so that he can survive

  818. the winter

  819. when there is little

  820. food to gather.

  821. Not only is this

  822. relatively insignificant creature

  823. more forward-thinking

  824. and industrious

  825. than the sluggard,

  826. it's also more

  827. responsible

  828. and self-starting.

  829. Right?

  830. Look at it again.

  831. It says,

  832. Without having any chief

  833. officer

  834. or ruler,

  835. she prepares her bread

  836. in summer

  837. and gathers her food

  838. in harvest.

  839. Nobody orders the aunt

  840. to do that.

  841. Go grab the breadcrumb

  842. at this time

  843. from this place

  844. and bring it

  845. and store it here.

  846. Nobody decides

  847. her duties for her

  848. but the aunt

  849. does it anyway.

  850. She knows from her

  851. God-given insect instinct

  852. what her responsibilities

  853. and relations are

  854. and she fulfills them

  855. admirably.

  856. The aunt knows

  857. to mind her own business

  858. and attend to her

  859. God-given responsibilities

  860. and relations.

  861. The sluggard,

  862. on the other hand,

  863. does not.

  864. So the aunt's

  865. industry

  866. and independence

  867. put the sluggard

  868. to shame.

  869. Verses 9-11

  870. describe the sluggard

  871. this way,

  872. How long will you

  873. lie there,

  874. O sluggard?

  875. When will you

  876. arise from your sleep?

  877. A little sleep,

  878. a little slumber,

  879. a little folding

  880. of the hands

  881. to rest

  882. and poverty

  883. will come upon you

  884. like a robber

  885. and want

  886. like an armed man.

  887. The interrogative words

  888. emphasize time,

  889. right?

  890. How long

  891. will you

  892. lie there?

  893. When will you

  894. arise from your sleep?

  895. So there's an implied

  896. rebuke in those words.

  897. The sluggard has already

  898. been lying there

  899. and sleeping for far

  900. too long.

  901. From the perspective

  902. of the father,

  903. the sluggard's slumber

  904. is endless.

  905. When?

  906. How long?

  907. It seems endless.

  908. But from the perspective

  909. of the sluggard,

  910. note the contrast

  911. that the father

  912. gives voice to

  913. in verse 10,

  914. it's just

  915. a little sleep,

  916. a little slumber,

  917. a little folding

  918. of the hands

  919. to rest.

  920. Notice how vague

  921. and incremental

  922. that is, right?

  923. I mean,

  924. it seems harmless.

  925. Oh, a little sleep.

  926. Oh, I'll just snooze

  927. just for a little while.

  928. Oh, I'll get that done

  929. just a little later.

  930. Right?

  931. Bible scholar

  932. Derek Kittner

  933. puts it insightfully.

  934. He says,

  935. he does not,

  936. the sluggard,

  937. he does not

  938. commit himself

  939. to a refusal

  940. but deceives himself

  941. by the smallness

  942. of his surrenders.

  943. So by inches

  944. and minutes,

  945. his opportunity

  946. slips away.

  947. The sluggard

  948. is reluctant

  949. to make a firm

  950. time commitment.

  951. So he delays

  952. incrementally

  953. and indefinitely.

  954. He hates deadlines.

  955. He shirks

  956. responsibilities.

  957. He flees

  958. pressure.

  959. Sleep is like

  960. a drug

  961. for the sluggard.

  962. It's the means

  963. by which he escapes

  964. the painful realities

  965. of life,

  966. the difficulties

  967. of life.

  968. And we can be tempted

  969. to think in the same way,

  970. can't we?

  971. What are some urgent

  972. and important things

  973. in your life

  974. that you keep pushing back

  975. little by little?

  976. Perhaps it requires

  977. discipline.

  978. Perhaps it's unpleasant.

  979. Perhaps it's

  980. seeking reconciliation

  981. with the Christian

  982. brother or sister

  983. that you have

  984. sinned against.

  985. perhaps it's

  986. calling your parents.

  987. Perhaps it's

  988. getting a laborious

  989. work project done.

  990. Perhaps it's

  991. applying for jobs.

  992. Perhaps it's

  993. studying for exams.

  994. Perhaps it's

  995. getting up early

  996. in the morning

  997. to read your Bible

  998. and pray.

  999. Maybe it's exercising.

  1000. Maybe it's finding

  1001. and committing

  1002. to a local church.

  1003. What have you

  1004. been delaying

  1005. unnecessarily

  1006. to your own peril?

  1007. You might think

  1008. it's just a little

  1009. folding of the hands

  1010. to rest,

  1011. but the Father warns,

  1012. and poverty

  1013. will come upon you

  1014. like a robber

  1015. and want

  1016. like an armed man.

  1017. The Father warns

  1018. of poverty

  1019. and want.

  1020. He doesn't merely

  1021. say that you won't

  1022. be rich.

  1023. He doesn't merely

  1024. say that you will

  1025. be middle class.

  1026. No, he says

  1027. that you will

  1028. be impoverished

  1029. and lack

  1030. the basic

  1031. necessities of life.

  1032. The Hebrew word

  1033. that is translated

  1034. poverty here

  1035. in verse 11

  1036. only occurs

  1037. in the book

  1038. of Proverbs.

  1039. It always

  1040. has a negative

  1041. connotation.

  1042. It doesn't refer

  1043. to just not

  1044. having enough

  1045. disposable income

  1046. and living from

  1047. paycheck to paycheck.

  1048. No, it refers

  1049. to destitution,

  1050. not having

  1051. enough food

  1052. to eat.

  1053. And it's not

  1054. a coincidence

  1055. that the Bible

  1056. never uses

  1057. the adjective

  1058. poor

  1059. to describe

  1060. the condition

  1061. of a sluggard

  1062. that becomes

  1063. destitute.

  1064. The word

  1065. poor

  1066. in contrast

  1067. to the word

  1068. poverty

  1069. is used

  1070. in the Bible

  1071. primarily

  1072. to refer

  1073. to those

  1074. who are poor

  1075. because of

  1076. circumstances

  1077. that are

  1078. outside of

  1079. their control.

  1080. And almost

  1081. uniformly

  1082. they are

  1083. the object

  1084. of God's

  1085. special compassion

  1086. and care

  1087. in Scripture.

  1088. So Proverbs

  1089. 19.17

  1090. says,

  1091. whoever is

  1092. generous

  1093. to the

  1094. poor

  1095. lends

  1096. to the

  1097. Lord

  1098. and he

  1099. meaning

  1100. God

  1101. will repay

  1102. him

  1103. for his

  1104. deed.

  1105. God cares

  1106. for the

  1107. poor

  1108. but the

  1109. impoverished

  1110. sluggard

  1111. is another

  1112. story

  1113. altogether.

  1114. This is

  1115. not the

  1116. case

  1117. for charity.

  1118. Poverty

  1119. and want

  1120. in wisdom

  1121. literature

  1122. are result

  1123. of divine

  1124. judgment

  1125. for sins

  1126. such as

  1127. slothfulness,

  1128. stinginess,

  1129. love of luxury,

  1130. carelessness,

  1131. and idle talk

  1132. which we'll all

  1133. see throughout

  1134. the book of

  1135. Proverbs

  1136. as we go

  1137. through.

  1138. And poverty

  1139. is not

  1140. deferential

  1141. toward its

  1142. victims.

  1143. Verse 11

  1144. says that it

  1145. comes like a

  1146. robber which

  1147. conveys the

  1148. sudden,

  1149. stealthy way

  1150. in which

  1151. poverty comes

  1152. and like

  1153. an armed

  1154. man which

  1155. conveys the

  1156. violent,

  1157. forcible way

  1158. in which

  1159. poverty comes.

  1160. So you

  1161. can't always

  1162. indulge in a

  1163. little more

  1164. sleep and

  1165. expect to

  1166. arouse

  1167. yourself for

  1168. work just

  1169. in time to

  1170. avoid poverty.

  1171. It doesn't

  1172. work like that.

  1173. Poverty comes

  1174. unannounced,

  1175. unexpectedly,

  1176. unavoidably.

  1177. It's similar

  1178. to why so

  1179. many drivers

  1180. I think fall

  1181. asleep on

  1182. the road.

  1183. They think

  1184. that they

  1185. could arouse

  1186. themselves when

  1187. they start to

  1188. feel themselves

  1189. falling asleep.

  1190. They don't

  1191. realize that

  1192. even though

  1193. that pre-sleep

  1194. stages are

  1195. gradual,

  1196. when they

  1197. actually fall

  1198. asleep,

  1199. it's almost

  1200. instantaneous.

  1201. There's no

  1202. way to pull

  1203. yourself out

  1204. of that once

  1205. it's too

  1206. late.

  1207. And so

  1208. they don't

  1209. pull over

  1210. at the

  1211. first indication

  1212. that they

  1213. are sleepy

  1214. or falling

  1215. asleep.

  1216. Instead,

  1217. they say

  1218. a little

  1219. longer,

  1220. a few

  1221. more

  1222. miles,

  1223. and then

  1224. bam,

  1225. car wreck.

  1226. Poverty is

  1227. similar.

  1228. It will come

  1229. upon you

  1230. like a

  1231. robber,

  1232. like an

  1233. armed man.

  1234. You thought

  1235. you were

  1236. getting away

  1237. with the

  1238. little shortcuts

  1239. here and

  1240. there,

  1241. a few

  1242. wasted hours

  1243. here and

  1244. there,

  1245. and then

  1246. bam,

  1247. you lose

  1248. your job.

  1249. You thought

  1250. you could

  1251. skim the

  1252. books and

  1253. pull an

  1254. all-nighter

  1255. the day

  1256. before your

  1257. exam,

  1258. relying on

  1259. your own

  1260. intelligence

  1261. to bail

  1262. you out

  1263. as it

  1264. has done

  1265. before.

  1266. A little

  1267. more video

  1268. games,

  1269. a few

  1270. more episodes,

  1271. and then

  1272. bam,

  1273. you fail

  1274. the exam.

  1275. You thought

  1276. you could

  1277. miss church

  1278. just a few

  1279. times,

  1280. well,

  1281. that wasn't

  1282. so bad,

  1283. and then

  1284. a few

  1285. more times,

  1286. a little

  1287. more spiritual

  1288. neglect,

  1289. and then

  1290. bam,

  1291. unbelief

  1292. and spiritual

  1293. hardness

  1294. have sunk

  1295. into your

  1296. heart.

  1297. By the

  1298. time you

  1299. realize that

  1300. you're in

  1301. trouble,

  1302. it's already

  1303. too late.

  1304. So the

  1305. passage exhorts

  1306. us,

  1307. mind your

  1308. own business

  1309. and attend

  1310. to the

  1311. responsibilities

  1312. and relations

  1313. God has

  1314. given you.

  1315. The third

  1316. category of

  1317. person that

  1318. the father

  1319. warns the

  1320. son against

  1321. becoming is

  1322. a worthless

  1323. person,

  1324. or more

  1325. literally,

  1326. a man of

  1327. worthlessness.

  1328. He is twice

  1329. described in

  1330. verses 14 and

  1331. 19 as a

  1332. sower of

  1333. discord.

  1334. This is an

  1335. agitator,

  1336. a rabble

  1337. rouser,

  1338. a troublemaker,

  1339. a person who

  1340. incites discord

  1341. and disunity

  1342. against God

  1343. and against

  1344. humanity.

  1345. The term

  1346. worthlessness is

  1347. almost a

  1348. catch-all term

  1349. for all kinds

  1350. of rebellious

  1351. wickedness,

  1352. so much so

  1353. that the

  1354. Hebrew word

  1355. behind that,

  1356. belial,

  1357. is used as

  1358. a name for

  1359. the devil in

  1360. 2 Corinthians

    2 Corinthians 6:15

  1361. chapter 6,

  1362. verse 15.

  1363. And the

  1364. kind of

  1365. things that

  1366. he does,

  1367. this worthless

  1368. man does,

  1369. is described

  1370. colorfully in

  1371. verses 12 to

  1372. 14.

  1373. He goes out

  1374. with crooked

  1375. speech,

  1376. winks with

  1377. his eyes,

  1378. signals with

  1379. his feet,

  1380. points with

  1381. his finger,

  1382. with perverted

  1383. heart,

  1384. devises evil,

  1385. continually

  1386. sowing discord.

  1387. Many body

  1388. parts are used

  1389. to describe this

  1390. worthless man's

  1391. behavior.

  1392. He is

  1393. described as

  1394. having a

  1395. crooked speech.

  1396. It's literally

  1397. crooked mouth,

  1398. which refers to

  1399. his slanderous

  1400. and false

  1401. speech.

  1402. His winking

  1403. eyes betray

  1404. deception.

  1405. I think people

  1406. in various

  1407. cultures still

  1408. do that.

  1409. It's like,

  1410. you say one

  1411. thing, but

  1412. when you're

  1413. meaning another

  1414. thing, you

  1415. wink, right?

  1416. You're deceiving

  1417. people.

  1418. He signals

  1419. his feet,

  1420. or more

  1421. literally,

  1422. he shuffles

  1423. with his feet.

  1424. The parallel

  1425. in verse 18

  1426. describes feet

  1427. that make haste

  1428. to run to

  1429. evil.

  1430. So the

  1431. shuffling feet

  1432. is likely

  1433. a reference

  1434. to a busy

  1435. body just

  1436. restlessly

  1437. nosing about

  1438. plotting evil

  1439. and stirring

  1440. up the pot

  1441. and meddling

  1442. in other

  1443. people's

  1444. business.

  1445. Shuffling

  1446. feet.

  1447. He points

  1448. with his

  1449. finger,

  1450. right?

  1451. Mocking,

  1452. ridiculing,

  1453. caricaturing,

  1454. and accusing,

  1455. blaming all

  1456. of the stems

  1457. ultimately from

  1458. the perverted

  1459. heart,

  1460. which devises

  1461. evil,

  1462. continually

  1463. sowing discord.

  1464. And all of

  1465. these body

  1466. parts are used

  1467. to show

  1468. that this

  1469. sower of

  1470. discord

  1471. instigates

  1472. conflict and

  1473. agitates

  1474. crowd with

  1475. his whole

  1476. self.

  1477. He leverages

  1478. everything he

  1479. has to do

  1480. this.

  1481. He is a

  1482. deceptive and

  1483. destructive force

  1484. in society,

  1485. sowing

  1486. misunderstanding,

  1487. suspicion,

  1488. hatred,

  1489. and violence.

  1490. He is the

  1491. polar opposite

  1492. of the wise

  1493. man who

  1494. minds his

  1495. own business

  1496. and attends

  1497. to his

  1498. God-given

  1499. responsibilities

  1500. and relations.

  1501. The worthless

  1502. man minds

  1503. others'

  1504. business,

  1505. meddles in

  1506. their affairs,

  1507. their responsibilities,

  1508. their relations,

  1509. and the

  1510. prevalence of

  1511. such worthless

  1512. men explain

  1513. why our

  1514. society is so

  1515. fractured.

  1516. And we have

  1517. to be careful

  1518. not to follow

  1519. in the path

  1520. of the

  1521. sower of

  1522. discord,

  1523. right?

  1524. It's so easy

  1525. nowadays when

  1526. everything from

  1527. law to

  1528. even health

  1529. seems partisan

  1530. and politicized.

  1531. It's so easy

  1532. to represent

  1533. unfairly and

  1534. uncharitably

  1535. those whom

  1536. we disagree

  1537. with.

  1538. It's so easy

  1539. to wink

  1540. with our eyes

  1541. at our

  1542. followers or

  1543. friends,

  1544. to point

  1545. with our

  1546. fingers,

  1547. to pass

  1548. blame,

  1549. mock,

  1550. even demonize

  1551. the other.

  1552. It's so easy

  1553. to devise

  1554. evil in

  1555. our hearts,

  1556. seeking the

  1557. ill or

  1558. downfall of

  1559. another person

  1560. instead of

  1561. seeking their

  1562. good and

  1563. speaking well

  1564. of them.

  1565. Have you

  1566. made a

  1567. caustic or

  1568. snarky

  1569. comment that

  1570. sows discord

  1571. rather than

  1572. peace?

  1573. Have you

  1574. shared an

  1575. article or

  1576. meme that

  1577. is misleading

  1578. because it

  1579. contains only

  1580. half the

  1581. truth?

  1582. We should

  1583. always strive

  1584. to represent

  1585. those who

  1586. disagree with

  1587. us in

  1588. the most

  1589. honest and

  1590. compelling way

  1591. possible.

  1592. That's what it

  1593. means to

  1594. follow Matthew

    Matthew 7:12

  1595. chapter 7

  1596. verse 12.

  1597. Whatever you

  1598. wish that

  1599. others would

  1600. do to you,

  1601. do also to

  1602. them.

  1603. I think the

  1604. vast influx of

  1605. available knowledge

  1606. to us through

  1607. the internet seems

  1608. to have made

  1609. many of us,

  1610. our knowledge,

  1611. a mile wide

  1612. but an inch

  1613. deep.

  1614. We live in

  1615. the shallows,

  1616. as the

  1617. Pulitzer Prize

  1618. nominated author

  1619. Nicholas Carr

  1620. puts it.

  1621. we have

  1622. much knowledge

  1623. but little

  1624. wisdom.

  1625. And as a

  1626. result we have

  1627. become slow

  1628. to hear and

  1629. quick to speak,

  1630. quick to anger,

  1631. rather than as

  1632. James 1.19 says,

  1633. quick to hear,

  1634. slow to speak,

  1635. slow to anger.

  1636. If that's the

  1637. case, brother and

  1638. sister, we are

  1639. in danger of

  1640. becoming

  1641. sowers of

  1642. discord, men

  1643. and women of

  1644. worthlessness.

  1645. So let's not

  1646. get sucked into

  1647. this and

  1648. instead heed

  1649. the warning of

  1650. the father in

  1651. verse 15.

  1652. Therefore,

  1653. calamity will

  1654. come upon him

  1655. suddenly.

  1656. In a moment,

  1657. he will be

  1658. broken beyond

  1659. healing.

  1660. The judgment

  1661. predicted here is

  1662. very similar to

  1663. the sudden and

  1664. violent poverty

  1665. that comes upon

  1666. the sluggard in

  1667. verse 11.

  1668. The sore of

  1669. discord too will

  1670. be overcome by

  1671. calamity suddenly

  1672. and he will be

  1673. broken beyond

  1674. healing.

  1675. So causing

  1676. trouble spells

  1677. trouble for the

  1678. troublemaker.

  1679. The sore of

  1680. discord will

  1681. himself be

  1682. broken.

  1683. And to

  1684. reinforce this

  1685. teaching, the

  1686. father reiterates

  1687. the offenses of

  1688. the sore of

  1689. discord in

  1690. verses 16 to

  1691. 19 using many

  1692. parallel body

  1693. parts going from

  1694. head to toe.

  1695. It says,

  1696. there are six

  1697. things that the

  1698. Lord hates,

  1699. seven that are

  1700. an abomination

  1701. to him,

  1702. haughty eyes,

  1703. a lying tongue

  1704. and hands that

  1705. shed innocent

  1706. blood,

  1707. a heart that

  1708. devises wicked

  1709. plans, feet

  1710. that make haste

  1711. to run to

  1712. evil.

  1713. And then he

  1714. adds two more,

  1715. a false witness

  1716. who breathes

  1717. out lies and

  1718. one who sows

  1719. discord among

  1720. brothers.

  1721. The use of

  1722. ascending numbers

  1723. going from six

  1724. things that the

  1725. Lord hates to

  1726. seven that are

  1727. an abomination

  1728. to him is a

  1729. poetic device,

  1730. it's a rhetorical

  1731. device that serves

  1732. to escalate and

  1733. emphasize what

  1734. he's trying to

  1735. say, that the

  1736. Lord despises

  1737. these things.

  1738. So they are

  1739. an abomination

  1740. to him.

  1741. And the

  1742. haughty eyes,

  1743. a lying tongue

  1744. and blood

  1745. shedding hands,

  1746. plotting heart,

  1747. evil chasing

  1748. feet, a lying

  1749. witness and

  1750. one who sows

  1751. discord among

  1752. brothers, they

  1753. all have this

  1754. in common,

  1755. that they are

  1756. all disruptive,

  1757. that they are

  1758. all anti-social

  1759. behaviors.

  1760. They claw out

  1761. the thread of

  1762. trust from the

  1763. fabric of society

  1764. so that it

  1765. unravels into

  1766. ugly chaos.

  1767. they disrupt

  1768. and destroy

  1769. family relations

  1770. that are

  1771. precious to

  1772. God.

  1773. And by

  1774. bringing in

  1775. the Lord

  1776. in verse

  1777. 16, in

  1778. climactic

  1779. fashion, the

  1780. father gets

  1781. to the heart

  1782. of the matter

  1783. in all of

  1784. his advice.

  1785. The reason

  1786. why he warns

  1787. us against

  1788. being a surety,

  1789. a sluggard,

  1790. and a sore

  1791. discord is

  1792. not merely

  1793. because it's

  1794. harmful to

  1795. ourselves,

  1796. but even more

  1797. importantly because

  1798. these things are

  1799. offensive to

  1800. God.

  1801. they are sins

  1802. against God

  1803. and the order

  1804. he has instituted

  1805. in our world

  1806. and the roles

  1807. that he has

  1808. assigned in

  1809. particular to

  1810. us.

  1811. And so he's

  1812. telling us that

  1813. we are to

  1814. mind our own

  1815. business and

  1816. attempt to

  1817. responsibilities and

  1818. relations God

  1819. has given us.

  1820. Unfortunately,

  1821. apart from

  1822. Christ, we all

  1823. have the

  1824. perverted hearts

  1825. that devise evil

  1826. that this passage

  1827. speaks of.

  1828. Twice in

  1829. verse 14 and

  1830. verse 18,

  1831. this passage

  1832. describes the

  1833. perverted heart

  1834. that is at

  1835. the root of

  1836. wickedness.

  1837. Verse 14 says

  1838. that the

  1839. worthless man

  1840. with perverted

  1841. heart devises

  1842. evil,

  1843. continually

  1844. sowing discord.

  1845. So people

  1846. argue whether

  1847. the adverb

  1848. continually goes

  1849. with sowing

  1850. discord or

  1851. devising evil,

  1852. but if you

  1853. follow the

  1854. punctuation

  1855. that was

  1856. provided by

  1857. the Jewish

  1858. scribes and

  1859. scholars in

  1860. the 10th

  1861. century,

  1862. the adverb

  1863. actually goes

  1864. with devising

  1865. evil.

  1866. So it's

  1867. saying that

  1868. our perverted

  1869. hearts are

  1870. continually

  1871. devising evil.

  1872. That's what

  1873. our perverted

  1874. hearts are

  1875. doing all

  1876. the time.

  1877. So it's

  1878. actually corroborated

  1879. by Genesis

  1880. 6-5 when it

  1881. says,

  1882. the Lord

  1883. saw that

  1884. the wickedness

  1885. of man was

  1886. great in

  1887. the earth

  1888. and that

  1889. every intention

  1890. of the

  1891. thoughts of

  1892. his heart

  1893. was only

  1894. evil

  1895. continually.

  1896. Our

  1897. wicked

  1898. hearts,

  1899. perverted

  1900. hearts are

  1901. continually

  1902. manufacturing

  1903. evil.

  1904. That's why

  1905. the theologian

  1906. and reformer

  1907. John Calvin

  1908. put it this

  1909. way,

  1910. man's

  1911. nature is

  1912. a perpetual

  1913. factory of

  1914. idols.

  1915. And what

  1916. are we to

  1917. do about

  1918. this?

  1919. I mean,

  1920. this passage

  1921. emphasizes taking

  1922. responsibility for

  1923. ourselves,

  1924. right?

  1925. Verse 3,

  1926. verse 5

  1927. tells us,

  1928. save yourself,

  1929. save yourself

  1930. from legal

  1931. trouble,

  1932. save yourself

  1933. from economic

  1934. ruin,

  1935. save yourself,

  1936. but there's

  1937. one thing

  1938. that we

  1939. cannot save

  1940. ourselves from

  1941. and that is

  1942. our own

  1943. sinful hearts.

  1944. For that,

  1945. we need a

  1946. savior.

  1947. Jesus,

  1948. whose name

  1949. means to

  1950. save,

  1951. to deliver,

  1952. is described

  1953. in scripture

  1954. as the

  1955. savior of

  1956. the world,

  1957. John 4,

  1958. 42.

  1959. He is the

  1960. one who

  1961. fulfills the

  1962. prophecy of

  1963. Ezekiel 36,

    Ezekiel 36:25–26

  1964. verse 25-26,

  1965. when God

  1966. promised to

  1967. give us new

  1968. hearts,

  1969. because there's

  1970. no hope for

  1971. us with the

  1972. perverted hearts.

  1973. Only way that

  1974. we can be

  1975. saved,

  1976. only way we

  1977. can obey

  1978. God and

  1979. believe in

  1980. him and

  1981. be faithful

  1982. to the

  1983. responsibilities

  1984. and relations

  1985. he has

  1986. given us

  1987. is by

  1988. receiving

  1989. this new

  1990. heart that

  1991. God promises

  1992. on and

  1993. that comes

  1994. to us only

  1995. through Jesus

  1996. Christ,

  1997. because Jesus

  1998. cleanses us

  1999. by dying for

  2000. our sins on

  2001. the cross,

  2002. he's victorious

  2003. in being raised

  2004. from the dead

  2005. and he fills

  2006. us with his

  2007. Holy Spirit

  2008. by whom we

  2009. are born again

  2010. to new

  2011. creation,

  2012. with new

  2013. hearts.

  2014. God

  2015. does this

  2016. for us

  2017. while we

  2018. are his

  2019. enemies,

  2020. as Romans

  2021. 5 talks

  2022. about it.

  2023. Look at the

  2024. words that I

  2025. use,

  2026. he says,

  2027. these are

  2028. things,

  2029. these things

  2030. that we

  2031. have all

  2032. done are

  2033. an abomination

  2034. to God.

  2035. That's a word

  2036. that we don't

  2037. use very often,

  2038. is it?

  2039. I don't

  2040. think I

  2041. ever say

  2042. that I

  2043. abominate

  2044. something.

  2045. I mean,

  2046. that's a

  2047. pretty strong

  2048. word,

  2049. abominate

  2050. something.

  2051. Maybe the

  2052. only thing

  2053. I can think

  2054. of abominating

  2055. is maybe

  2056. like a

  2057. cockroach

  2058. or something.

  2059. It's

  2060. just revolting.

  2061. And that's

  2062. what we

  2063. were in

  2064. our sins

  2065. to God.

  2066. This

  2067. disgusting

  2068. cockroach

  2069. should have

  2070. just squashed

  2071. to death

  2072. instead.

  2073. That's what

  2074. we deserved.

  2075. We should

  2076. have been

  2077. punished.

  2078. We should

  2079. have been

  2080. consigned

  2081. to eternal

  2082. damnation.

  2083. We should

  2084. have died.

  2085. And yet

  2086. God is

  2087. merciful to

  2088. us because

  2089. He,

  2090. at the same

  2091. time,

  2092. He has

  2093. this wrath

  2094. towards

  2095. sinners.

  2096. He has

  2097. this

  2098. unparalleled

  2099. love.

  2100. So He

  2101. makes a

  2102. way for

  2103. us to

  2104. be saved

  2105. from the

  2106. wrath of

  2107. God,

  2108. from the

  2109. sins that

  2110. He

  2111. abominates.

  2112. And that

  2113. is through

  2114. Jesus.

  2115. And it's

  2116. only through

  2117. faith in

  2118. Jesus that

  2119. we learn

  2120. truly

  2121. to live

  2122. with the

  2123. wisdom of

  2124. God that

  2125. is taught

  2126. in this

  2127. book of

  2128. Proverbs.

  2129. He has

  2130. to live

  2131. with the

  2132. wisdom of God

  2133. that is taught

2134. in this book of Proverbs.
