  1. Heavenly Father,

  2. we thank you

  3. that you speak to us as a loving Father.

  4. That you do not shy away from

  5. speaking the hard truth to us

  6. because you love us

  7. you seek our good.

  8. And Lord, this passage is a sobering passage.

  9. Even a frightful passage.

  10. But Lord, we pray

  11. that as we cherish the word

  12. you have given us,

  13. that you would ignite

  14. or even reignite

  15. our zeal,

  16. our passion

  17. for your glory.

  18. And that that would make us faithful

  19. in our relationships.

  20. That they would keep us

  21. and guard us from

  22. lust and adultery.

  23. And that we would be freshly reminded

  24. of

  25. the great price that you paid

  26. to reclaim

  27. your adulterous bride,

  28. us, your church.

  29. So now lead us and speak to us.

  30. In Jesus' name we pray.

  31. Amen.

  32. Amen.

  33. We're in Proverbs

    Proverbs 6:20

  34. chapter 6, verse 20

  35. to chapter 7, verse 27.

  36. I'll read out loud for us.

  37. My son,

  38. keep your father's commandment

  39. and forsake not

  40. your mother's teaching.

  41. Bind them on your heart

  42. always.

  43. Tie them around your neck.

  44. When you walk,

  45. they will lead you.

  46. When you lie down,

  47. they will watch over you.

  48. And when you awake,

  49. they will talk with you.

  50. For the commandment is a lamp

  51. and the teaching a light.

  52. And the reproofs of discipline

  53. are the way of life.

  54. To preserve you from the evil woman,

  55. from the smooth tongue

  56. of the adulteress.

  57. Do not desire her beauty

  58. in your heart.

  59. And do not let her capture you

  60. with her eyelashes.

  61. For the price of a prostitute

  62. is only a loaf of bread.

  63. But a married woman

  64. hunts down a precious life.

  65. Can a man carry fire

  66. next to his chest

  67. and his clothes not be burned?

  68. Or can one walk on hot coals

  69. and his feet not be scorched?

  70. So is he who goes

  71. into his neighbor's wife.

  72. None who touches her

  73. will go unpunished.

  74. People do not despise a thief

  75. if he steals

  76. to satisfy his appetite

  77. when he is hungry.

  78. But if he is caught,

  79. he will pay sevenfold.

  80. He will give all the goods

  81. of his house.

  82. He who commits adultery

  83. lacks sense.

  84. He who does it

  85. destroys himself.

  86. He will get wounds

  87. and dishonor

  88. and his disgrace

  89. will not be wiped away.

  90. For jealousy

  91. makes the man furious

  92. and he will not spare

  93. when he takes revenge.

  94. He will accept

  95. no compensation.

  96. He will refuse

  97. though you multiply gifts.

  98. My son,

  99. keep my words

  100. and treasure up

  101. my commandments with you.

  102. Keep my commandments

  103. and live.

  104. Keep my teaching

  105. as the apple of your eye.

  106. Bind them on your fingers.

  107. Write them

  108. on the tablet of your heart.

  109. Say to wisdom,

  110. you are my sister.

  111. And call in sight

  112. your intimate friend

  113. to keep you

  114. from the forbidden woman,

  115. from the adulteress

  116. with her smooth words.

  117. For at the window

  118. of my house

  119. I have looked out

  120. through my lattice

  121. and I have seen

  122. among the simple

  123. I have perceived

  124. among the youths

  125. a young man

  126. lacking sense

  127. passing along the street

  128. near her corner

  129. taking the road

  130. to her house

  131. in the twilight

  132. in the evening

  133. at the time

  134. of night

  135. and darkness.

  136. And behold,

  137. the woman meets him

  138. dressed as a prostitute

  139. wily of heart.

  140. She is loud

  141. and wayward.

  142. Her feet

  143. do not stay at home.

  144. Now in the street

  145. now in the market

  146. and at every corner

  147. she lies in wait.

  148. She seizes him

  149. and kisses him

  150. and with bold face

  151. she says to him,

  152. I have to offer sacrifices

  153. and today

  154. I paid my vows.

  155. So now

  156. I have come out

  157. to meet you

  158. to seek you eagerly

  159. and I have found you.

  160. I have spread my couch

  161. with coverings,

  162. colored linens

  163. from Egyptian linen.

  164. I perfumed my bed

  165. with myrrh,

  166. aloes,

  167. and cinnamon.

  168. Come,

  169. let us take

  170. our fill of love

  171. till morning.

  172. Let us delight

  173. ourselves with love.

  174. For my husband

  175. is not at home.

  176. He has gone

  177. on a long journey.

  178. He took a bag

  179. of money with him.

  180. At full moon

  181. he will come home.

  182. With much seductive speech

  183. she persuades him.

  184. With her smooth talk

  185. she compels him.

  186. All at once

  187. he follows her

  188. as an ox

  189. goes to the slaughter.

  190. Whereas a stag

  191. is caught fast

  192. till an arrow

  193. pierces its liver.

  194. As a bird

  195. rushes into a snare

  196. he does not know

  197. that it will cost him

  198. his life.

  199. And now

  200. O sons

  201. listen to me

  202. and be attentive

  203. to the words

  204. of my mouth.

  205. Let not your heart

  206. turn aside

  207. to her ways.

  208. Do not stray

  209. into her paths.

  210. For many a victim

  211. has she laid low

  212. and all her slain

  213. are a mighty throng.

  214. Her house

  215. is the way to shield

  216. going down

  217. to the chambers

  218. of death.

  219. This is God's

  220. holy and authoritative

  221. word.

  222. If someone were

  223. to compile

  224. a list of

  225. men and women

  226. whose lives

  227. and careers

  228. have been ruined

  229. by adultery

  230. that list would be

  231. too long to count.

  232. I still remember

  233. the

  234. Ashley Madison

  235. data leak

  236. from 2015.

  237. Some of you

  238. might remember that.

  239. when the website

  240. that promotes

  241. extramarital affairs

  242. was hacked.

  243. And the hackers

  244. leaked names

  245. of 30 million

  246. people

  247. who had used

  248. the website.

  249. And some of

  250. the leaked data

  251. included other

  252. personally identifying

  253. information like

  254. home addresses

  255. and search

  256. histories,

  257. credit card records.

  258. people

  259. and the leaked

  260. names included

  261. politicians,

  262. priests,

  263. military members,

  264. civil servants,

  265. and celebrities.

  266. Many resignations

  267. and divorces

  268. and in some cases

  269. even suicides

  270. followed.

  271. And one of the

  272. people affected

  273. was a pastor

  274. and a seminary

  275. professor who

  276. couldn't overcome

  277. the deep shame

  278. and fear

  279. that came with

  280. the exposure.

  281. So he left

  282. a heart-wrenching

  283. apology to his

  284. wife and took

  285. his own life.

  286. That's what

  287. Satan thrives on.

  288. He promises

  289. pleasure

  290. without pain.

  291. He promises

  292. sin

  293. without death.

  294. But Proverbs

  295. 620-727

  296. that we just read

  297. exposes

  298. his malicious

  299. lies.

  300. Chapter 6

  301. tells us

  302. the price

  303. of the adulteress

  304. and chapter 7

  305. tells us

  306. the lure

  307. of the adulteress.

  308. And the lure

  309. of the adulteress

  310. is such that

  311. a young man

  312. liking sense

  313. falls

  314. headlong

  315. into her trap

  316. hook,

  317. line,

  318. and sinker.

  319. And how can

  320. we be fortified

  321. against this

  322. dangerous temptation?

  323. This passage

  324. teaches us

  325. that we should

  326. treasure up

  327. the commandments

  328. of God

  329. so that they

  330. keep us

  331. from the trap

  332. of the adulteress.

  333. And if you're

  334. single,

  335. don't tune it out

  336. thinking that

  337. this doesn't

  338. apply to you.

  339. Jesus said

  340. in Matthew 5

  341. 27-28

  342. you have heard

  343. that it was said

  344. you shall not

  345. commit adultery

  346. but I tell you

  347. that everyone

  348. who looks

  349. at a woman

  350. lustfully

  351. has already

  352. committed adultery

  353. with her

  354. in his heart.

  355. Physical adultery

  356. is often preceded

  357. by heart adultery

  358. and this passage

  359. has helpful insights

  360. to keep us

  361. from both.

  362. And so first

  363. let's look at

  364. the price

  365. of the adulteress

  366. in chapter 6.

  367. It says

  368. in verses 20

  369. and 21

  370. Throughout the

  371. book of Proverbs

  372. the author

  373. frequently assumes

  374. the voice

  375. of the father

  376. and equates

  377. his voice

  378. with the commandments

  379. of God himself

  380. because he is

  381. a spokesperson

  382. for God.

  383. He's relaying

  384. the commandments

  385. of God

  386. to the future

  387. generations.

  388. But instructing

  389. a child

  390. was not

  391. an exclusive

  392. responsibility

  393. of the father.

  394. It's especially

  395. appropriate

  396. to note

  397. today

  398. on Mother's

  399. Day

  400. that the

  401. teaching

  402. of the mother

  403. is mentioned

  404. here also

  405. as it is

  406. in two other

  407. places in Proverbs.

  408. It says

  409. forsake

  410. not your

  411. mother's

  412. teaching.

  413. The saying

  414. that was

  415. popularized

  416. in the 1940s

  417. to recognize

  418. the often

  419. unheralded

  420. contributions

  421. of women

  422. is true.

  423. Behind every

  424. great man

  425. there is

  426. a great woman.

  427. 1 Timothy 6

  428. 9-10

  429. teaches

  430. that an

  431. elderly woman

  432. who desires

  433. to devote

  434. herself fully

  435. to praying

  436. for the church

  437. and serving

  438. the church

  439. in that way

  440. while receiving

  441. full financial

  442. care and provision

  443. from the church

  444. that they need

  445. to be qualified

  446. and that their

  447. qualification is

  448. that they need

  449. to have a

  450. reputation

  451. for good works.

  452. This is 1 Timothy 6

  453. 9-10.

  454. It then lists

  455. several examples

  456. of what having

  457. a good reputation

  458. for good works

  459. looks like.

  460. It lists things

  461. like showing

  462. hospitality

  463. washing the feet

  464. of the saints

  465. and caring

  466. for the afflicted.

  467. But before

  468. all of those

  469. things

  470. what heads

  471. the list

  472. is this

  473. surprising item

  474. that she

  475. has brought

  476. up children.

  477. Being a

  478. mother

  479. bringing up

  480. children

  481. teaching

  482. your children

  483. is a good

  484. commendable

  485. God-honoring

  486. work

  487. worthy of

  488. praise

  489. and recognition.

  490. It is a

  491. difficult work

  492. a sacrificial

  493. work

  494. a worthy

  495. work.

  496. And since

  497. the father

  498. and mother

  499. and you

  500. here

  501. have done

  502. a good

  503. job

  504. of teaching

  505. their

  506. children

  507. the father

  508. tells the

  509. son

  510. to bind

  511. their teaching

  512. on his

  513. heart

  514. always

  515. and to

  516. tie them

  517. around

  518. his neck.

  519. This is

  520. a figurative

  521. expression

  522. for a

  523. constant

  524. devotion.

  525. Some of

  526. you might

  527. remember

  528. from the

  529. 90s

  530. it was

  531. really

  532. popular

  533. in the

  534. 90s

  535. these

  536. WWJD

  537. bracelets

  538. What Would

  539. Jesus Do

  540. bracelets

  541. I wore

  542. them in

  543. middle

  544. school

  545. proudly

  546. in my

  547. school

  548. and

  549. it's

  550. kind of

  551. like that

  552. but in

  553. a more

  554. figurative

  555. and less

  556. literal

  557. sense

  558. we are

  559. to keep

  560. the

  561. commandments

  562. of God

  563. always

  564. near

  565. our

  566. minds

  567. and

  568. dear

  569. to

  570. our

  571. hearts

  572. we

  573. should

  574. read

  575. God's

  576. word

  577. we

  578. should

  579. meditate

  580. on

  581. God's

  582. word

  583. we

  584. should

  585. memorize

  586. God's

  587. word

  588. I

  589. had a

  590. zoom

  591. call

  592. with

  593. one

  594. of

  595. our

  596. church

  597. members

  598. this

  599. week

  600. who

  601. had

  602. a

  603. wall

  604. of

  605. truth

  606. in

  607. the

  608. room

  609. with

  610. whole

  611. bunch

  612. of

  613. sticky

  614. notes

  615. with

  616. these

  617. truths

  618. from

  619. scripture

  620. and

  621. Bible

  622. verses

  623. to serve

  624. as a

  625. constant

  626. reminder

  627. to

  628. live

  629. with

  630. the

  631. life

  632. giving

  633. truths

  634. of

  635. God

  636. in

  637. mind

  638. let

  639. me

  640. ask

  641. you

  642. what

  643. does

  644. your

  645. mind

  646. wander

  647. to

  648. is

  649. your

  650. mind

  651. full

  652. of

  653. God's

  654. word

  655. or

  656. is

  657. it

  658. full

  659. of

  660. the

  661. world

  662. what

  663. does

  664. your

  665. heart

  666. treasure

  667. is

  668. what

  669. do

  670. you

  671. love

  672. what

  673. stirs

  674. up

  675. your

  676. soul

  677. what

  678. ignites

  679. your

  680. passion

  681. is

  682. it

  683. to

  684. know

  685. and

  686. to

  687. do

  688. the

  689. will

  690. of

  691. God

  692. or

  693. is

  694. it

  695. the

  696. gospel

  697. of

  698. our

  699. Lord

  700. Jesus

  701. Christ

  702. is

  703. it

  704. the

  705. commandments

  706. of

  707. God

  708. our

  709. Father

  710. have

  711. you

  712. bound

  713. those

  714. things

  715. in

  716. your

  717. heart

  718. have

  719. you

  720. tied

  721. it

  722. around

  723. your

  724. neck

  725. and

  726. here's

  727. why

  728. that's

  729. important

  730. it

  731. says

  732. in

  733. verse

  734. 22

  735. when you

  736. walk

  737. they will

  738. lead

  739. you

  740. when you

  741. lie

  742. down

  743. they will

  744. watch

  745. over

  746. you

  747. and when

  748. you

  749. awake

  750. they will

  751. talk

  752. with

  753. you

  754. this

  755. verse

  756. personifies

  757. the commandments

  758. of God

  759. these commandments

  760. will

  761. and

  762. what a

  763. comforting

  764. thought

  765. whether

  766. you're

  767. active

  768. or

  769. sedentary

  770. whether

  771. you're

  772. outdoors

  773. or

  774. indoors

  1455. desire

  1456. her

  1457. beauty

  1458. in

  1459. our

  1460. heart

  1461. this

  1462. forms

  1463. a

  1464. contrast

  1465. with

  1466. verse

  1467. 21

1468. which taught us to bind God's commandments on our heart.

1469. If we fortify our hearts with the beauty and the goodness of God's commandments,

1470. we will not be captured by the beauty of a neighbor's wife.

1471. The gaze of the adulteress will be unable to pierce our hearts.

1472. Verse 26 and following supply the reasons why we ought to guard ourselves against the adulteress.

1473. Four, the price of a prostitute is only a loaf of bread, but a married woman hunts down a precious life.

1474. This is the price of the adulteress.

1475. The price of a prostitute is a loaf, but the price of an adulteress is a life.

1476. The author is not encouraging us to seek out prostitutes instead of committing adultery.

1477. Sexual immorality of all shapes and form are prohibited throughout scripture,

1478. and hiring a prostitute for sex is explicitly condemned in 1 Corinthians chapter 6.

    1 Corinthians 6 chapter mention

1479. Solomon wants us to avoid both prostitution and adultery.

1480. He's merely noting that sleeping with a married woman has far worse consequences than sleeping with a prostitute.

1481. In terms of economic cost, the prostitute is actually more expensive.

  1482. The adulteress is free.

1483. But in terms of the physical and social cost, the adulteress is far more costly than a prostitute.

  1484. Adultery destroys marriages.

  1485. It wrecks homes.

  1486. It even takes lives.

1487. In verses 27 to 35, the father then explains that this punishment for adultery is both inescapable and interminable.

  1488. It has no end.

1489. The devastating consequence of adultery leaves no exits and has no end.

  1490. First, it's inescapable.

1491. It says in verses 27 to 29,

1492. The obvious answer to these rhetorical questions is no.

1493. You cannot carry fire or walk on hot coals without being burned.

1494. Likewise, none who touches his neighbor's wife will go unpunished.

1495. In Hebrew, the words for man, wife, and fire all are sibilant.

1496. They all have S sounds.

1497. They're very similar in sounds.

1498. So when you hear that sound association between the man, wife, and fire,

1499. whenever it establishes the association, the connection between the sin and the consequence

1500. and the punishment even more closely and tightly.

1501. So whenever you feel tempted to lust after a neighbor's wife or a husband,

  1502. think about fire.

1503. That's the association that the author of Proverbs is trying to make for us.

1504. Whenever you feel a spark or a flame rising up inside you for a neighbor's wife or a husband,

1505. don't think of metaphorical fire.

1506. Think of real fire, fire that burns and consumes and scorches and leaves scars and kills.

1507. And don't for a moment think that you can get away with it.

1508. That no one will find out.

1509. God sees everything and he is the ultimate judge overall.

1510. And his word declares that none who touches his neighbor's wife will go unpunished.

  1511. None.

1512. And the adulterer has no excuse.

1513. There is no mitigating circumstance that makes adultery more acceptable.

1514. It says in verses 30 to 32,

1515. If you steal to satisfy your hunger, it's still wrong.

1516. And if you're caught, you will be held accountable.

1517. However, at least people will pity you.

1518. But not so with the adulterer.

1519. He who commits adultery lacks sense.

1520. He who does it destroys himself.

1521. No one will pity you.

1522. Instead, they will say that you destroyed yourself.

1523. The thief might end up losing everything he has, all of his possessions.

1524. But the adulterer will lose his life itself.

1525. Adultery is senseless and its destructive consequences inescapable.

1526. And not only is the ruin inescapable, it's also interminable.

1527. It says in verse 33,

1528. He will get wounds and dishonor and his disgrace will not be wiped away.

1529. In much of the ancient world, adultery was legally punishable,

1530. either by whipping or by the death penalty.

1531. So the adulterer might literally end up with wounds and literally lose his life.

1532. And the word wound is a noun form of the same word touch that was used in verse 29.

1533. So this wordplay reinforces the inevitable consequence of adultery.

1534. Whoever touches a married woman sexually will be touched with violence.

1535. But the physical punishment is not the end of it.

1536. He will also get dishonor.

1537. There is no way to make restitution for adultery.

1538. Because you can't undo it.

  1539. You can't repay a wrong spouse.

1540. The wounds and dishonor and disgrace that befall the adulterer are therefore permanent.

1541. They will not be wiped away.

1542. It will be a permanent blotch on your record.

1543. And here's why the punishment is so severe.

1544. It says in verses 34 to 35,

1545. You can put a price tag on all of your property.

1546. Their loss can be compensated.

1547. But your wife, your husband, their loyalty, their affection,

  1548. these are priceless things,

1549. and there is no adequate compensation for their loss.

1550. Even if you try to appease the cuckold,

  1551. the grieved husband,

  1552. with bribes,

1553. his jealous anger will not be pacified,

1554. and he will exact revenge.

1555. We are to consider this high price of the adulteress

1556. and treasure up the commandments of God.

1557. And having spoken of the price,

1558. now the stage turns in chapter 7

1559. to the lure of the adulteress in chapter 7.

1560. The tactics used by the adulteress

  1561. to capture foolish men,

  1562. to trap them.

  1563. But before he does,

  1564. he reiterates the importance

1565. of treasuring up the commandments of God again

  1566. in verses 1 to 5.

  1567. As I read it,

1568. please listen for the repetition of the word keep.

  1569. It says,

1570. My son, keep my words

1571. and treasure up my commandments with you.

1572. Keep my commandments and live.

1573. Keep my teaching as the apple of your eye.

1574. Bind them on your fingers.

1575. Write them on the tablet of your heart.

  1576. Say to wisdom,

  1577. You are my sister

1578. and call inside your intimate friend

1579. to keep you from the forbidden woman,

1580. from the adulteress with her smooth words.

1581. The repetition of the word keep

1582. emphasizes the main point of this passage

1583. that the only way to be kept from the adulteress

1584. is to keep the commandments of God in our hearts.

1585. If you want to be guarded from the adulteress,

1586. you must guard God's word within you.

1587. The commandments of God should be cherished

1588. and guarded like the apple of your eye

1589. that are so delicate and essential,

  1590. important that we protect.

  1591. It's instinctive, right?

  1592. I think that's why it's so hard.

1593. I don't know how people who wear contacts do it.

1594. I can't keep my eyes open even when I try

1595. because it's our instinct to protect it.

1596. Likewise, we're to keep, guard,

1597. God's word in our hearts

1598. as the apple of our eye.

1599. Verses four to five contrast

  1600. befriending wisdom

  1601. with befriending the adulteress.

  1602. It says,

1603. Say to wisdom, you are my sister.

1604. Call inside your intimate friend

  1605. or your relative.

1606. And the word forbidden woman

  1607. is once again,

1608. literally it means strange woman.

  1609. It's a reference to the woman

1610. that does not belong to your family,

1611. the person that is not your wife,

  1612. but your neighbor's wife,

  1613. a strange woman.

1614. If you want to be protected

1615. from the seduction of the strange woman,

  1616. make wisdom your familial

  1617. and familiar woman.

1618. If you want to remain estranged

  1619. from the adulteress,

1620. make God's wisdom familiar to yourself.

1621. And as a cautionary tale,

1622. the father uses an example

  1623. of a foolish man

1624. who succumbs to the lure of the adulteress

1625. in the rest of the chapter.

1626. He says in verses six to eight,

1627. For at the window of my house,

1628. I have looked out through my lattice

1629. and I've seen among the simple,

1630. I perceived among the youths,

1631. a young man lacking sense,

1632. passing along the street near her corner,

1633. taking the road to her house

  1634. in the twilight,

  1635. in the evening,

1636. at the time of night and darkness.

1637. These verses contrast the father

  1638. who is looking out

1639. from the window of my house,

1640. from the senseless young man

1641. who takes the road to her house.

  1642. The father is safe

1643. where every faithful, stable man

  1644. should be a knight

  1645. at his own house.

1646. But the foolish young man

1647. is roaming the streets near her house.

1648. He's at the wrong place.

1649. Earlier in Proverbs chapter five,

  1650. verse eight warned us,

1651. Keep your way far from the adulteress

1652. and do not go near the door of her house.

1653. We're supposed to stay far away

  1654. from the adulteress.

1655. We are not even to go near the door of her house,

  1656. let alone go in.

1657. Ray helpfully used two weeks ago

  1658. the illustration of Joseph

  1659. in Genesis chapter 39.

    Genesis 39 chapter mention

1660. He literally fled the advances

  1661. of Potiphar's wife

1662. and he refused even to be in her presence

1663. because she was trying to seduce him.

1664. Likewise, we're to flee the temptress.

1665. Maybe you don't outright look at pornography,

1666. but are you going near it?

1667. Are you looking at certain Facebook

  1668. or Instagram profiles

1669. where you know you will find pictures

  1670. of scantily clad people?

  1671. Are you watching suggestive

1672. or sensuous videos on YouTube?

  1673. The stage warns us,

1674. Don't even go near her house.

  1675. Is there a co-worker

1676. that is throwing inappropriate gazes

  1677. in your direction

1678. or making overt advances toward you?

  1679. Don't go wandering

1680. near his or her cubicle

  1681. to indulge your curiosity.

1682. Stay far away from her.

  1683. Transfer to another department.

  1684. Get another office.

1685. Maybe get even another job.

1686. Don't even go near her house.

  1687. Stay in your house

  1688. with your spouse.

  1689. Are you traveling?

1690. Don't go to the nude beach.

1691. Don't wander around the swimming pool

1692. trying to check out who is there.

1693. Don't go to the bar alone.

  1694. Ask the hotel staff

  1695. to disconnect your cable

1696. or remove the TV from your room

  1697. beforehand if necessary.

1698. Don't even go near her house.

1699. Not only was this young man

  1700. in the wrong place,

  1701. he was also there

  1702. at the wrong time.

1703. It says in verse 90,

1704. He was taking the road to her house

  1705. in the twilight,

  1706. in the evening,

1707. at the time of night and darkness.

1708. Notice that repetition of words

  1709. that suggest night time

  1710. and darkness.

  1711. It's the opposite

1712. of following the commandments of God

  1713. which was described

  1714. in chapter 6, verse 23

  1715. as a lamp and a light.

1716. As John chapter 3, verses 19 to 20 put it,

    John 3:19–20

  1717. People love the darkness

  1718. rather than the light

1719. because their works were evil.

1720. For everyone who does wicked things

  1721. hates the light

1722. and does not come to the light

1723. lest his works should be exposed.

1724. What does this mean for us?

  1725. Secrecy.

  1726. Shame.

  1727. Hiding from others.

  1728. Shirking responsibility.

  1729. Fleeing accountability.

  1730. Finding cover at night.

  1731. This is the environment

  1732. that incubates sin.

1733. We are to avoid such darkness.

1734. We are to instead live in the light.

1735. Confess our sins to one another.

1736. Expose our sins to the light of Christ.

  1737. Be transparent.

  1738. Be vulnerable.

1739. Seek accountability from one another.

  1740. In such an environment,

  1741. in the light,

  1742. sin suffocates.

  1743. It withers away.

1744. When you're in the wrong place

  1745. at the wrong time,

  1746. it's no surprise

1747. that you encounter the adulteress.

  1748. Verses 10 to 12

  1749. describe her this way.

  1750. And behold,

  1751. the woman meets him

  1752. dressed as a prostitute,

  1753. wily of heart.

1754. She is loud and wayward.

1755. Her feet do not stay at home.

  1756. Now in the street,

  1757. now in the market,

  1758. and at every corner,

  1759. she lies in wait.

1760. As if she had been waiting

  1761. to pounce on him.

  1762. It says,

  1763. behold,

  1764. she's just right there.

  1765. All of a sudden,

  1766. the woman meets him.

  1767. And she's dressed as a prostitute,

  1768. probably revealing clothes

  1769. intended to seduce.

  1770. And it says,

1771. she is wily of heart.

  1772. She is not genuine.

  1773. She's not authentic.

1774. She hides the true intentions

  1775. of her heart.

1776. She is loud and wayward,

1777. both in the sounds she makes

1778. and in the places she goes.

1779. She is out of bounds.

  1780. She is disruptive.

1781. Her feet do not stay at home.

  1782. Now in the street,

  1783. now in the market,

  1784. and every corner,

  1785. she lies in wait.

1786. Unlike the father who was home,

1787. this woman is never home.

1788. She's not an industrious woman

1789. who works busily at home.

1790. She is rather a busy body,

  1791. scurrying about to meddle

1792. in the affairs of others.

1793. Instead of the wife who is praised

  1794. in 1 Peter 3, verse 4,

    1 Peter 3:4

1795. for possessing the imperishable beauty,

1796. imperishable beauty of a gentle

  1797. and quiet spirit,

1798. the adulteress is loud and wayward.

  1799. Unlike godly young women

1800. who are commanded in Titus 2,

    Titus 2:3–5

  1801. verses 3-5,

  1802. and 1 Timothy 5,

    1 Timothy 5:11–14

  1803. verses 11-14,

1804. to love their husbands and children

1805. and to manage their households,

  1806. the adulteress' feet

1807. do not stay at home.

1808. She does not love her husband

  1809. and children.

  1810. She's not dedicated

  1811. to her household.

  1812. And the adulteress' actions

1813. and speech in verses 13-21,

  1814. provide uncanny insight

  1815. into how the temptations

1816. of lust and adultery function.

1817. If I could summarize the insights,

1818. I can summarize it into four things.

1819. First, the adulteress creates a pretext.

1820. Second, the adulteress appeals to pride.

1821. Third, the adulteress entices with pleasure.

  1822. And fourth,

  1823. she promises impunity.

  1824. This is her tactic.

1825. First, it says in verses 13-15,

1826. that the adulteress seizes him

  1827. and kisses him,

1828. and with bold face she says to him,

1829. I had to offer sacrifices,

1830. and today I paid my vows.

1831. So now I have come out to meet you.

  1832. She's first creating a pretext.

1833. She claims to be a religious person

1834. and claims that she has made a vow

1835. to offer a sacrifice to her deity

1836. and that today she has finally fulfilled her vow.

1837. Now what does that have to do

  1838. with anything here?

  1839. The Canaanite fertility cult

  1840. required fellowship sacrifices

1841. where the worshiper sacrifices an animal

1842. and shares a meal with his or her deity.

1843. Now a female who offers such sacrifice

1844. as a part of that communal meal

1845. were required to have sexual intercourse

  1846. with the male partner.

1847. This is the Canaanite fertility cult.

1848. So she claims that she needs this young man.

  1849. However, since the adulteress

1850. has been described already in verse 5

  1851. as having smooth words

  1852. and in verse 10

1853. as being wily of heart,

  1854. I'm inclined to think

1855. that this is merely a pretext

1856. and not a genuine religious concern.

1857. The seductress creates a pretext for intimacy.

1858. Think about how people might do that.

1859. Hey, I've been really depressed

  1860. and lonely lately.

1861. My husband has been traveling

  1862. too much for work.

1863. He doesn't care about me at all.

1864. Hey, do you want to come over to my house

  1865. and keep me company

  1866. and have a drink?

1867. I could really use some

  1868. company, friendship.

1869. Or someone else might say,

1870. well, we've been so overworked

1871. by our boss, haven't we?

1872. Do you want to go to a spa together

  1873. this weekend to relax,

  1874. let off steam?

  1875. The adulteress first creates

  1876. a pretext.

1877. Second, she appeals to pride.

1878. Look at how the adulteress

1879. butters up the young man

  1880. before eating him alive.

  1881. She says,

1882. I have come to meet you,

  1883. to seek you eagerly,

1884. and I have found you.

  1885. She's saying,

  1886. I need a male partner

  1887. to complete my sacrifice,

  1888. and you,

1889. you handsome hunk of a man.

1890. You are just the right person.

1891. I've been eagerly looking for you.

  1892. And finally,

  1893. I have found you.

1894. Can you imagine how special

  1895. this young man felt?

1896. She's appealing to his vanity.

  1897. You are special.

1898. What woman can refuse you?

1899. Why be tied down by someone

  1900. who doesn't appreciate you?

1901. Oh, but I appreciate you.

1902. I know your true value.

1903. This is far from the truth,

  1904. of course.

  1905. There is, in fact,

  1906. nothing especially impressive

  1907. about this young man

  1908. except he is dim-witted.

  1909. And his adulteress

  1910. is anything but discriminating.

1911. We were told in verse 12,

  1912. now in the street,

  1913. now in the market,

  1914. in every corner

  1915. she lies in wait.

1916. Later it says in verse 26,

  1917. many a victim

  1918. has she laid low,

  1919. and all her slain

  1920. are a mighty throng.

  1921. This adulteress

  1922. is not discriminating.

  1923. She's not picky.

  1924. She is everywhere,

  1925. and she solicits everyone

  1926. who is foolish enough

  1927. to come near her.

  1928. We should be wary

  1929. of flatterers in general,

  1930. but let us beware,

  1931. lest we duped

  1932. by the adulteress.

1933. So she appeals to pride,

  1934. and her third tactic

  1935. is that she entices

  1936. with pleasure.

  1937. She knows that

  1938. human beings

  1939. are creatures of desire,

  1940. of the senses.

1941. So she says in verses 16-18,

1942. I have spread my couch

  1943. with coverings,

  1944. colored linens

  1945. from Egyptian linen.

1946. I have perfumed my bed

  1947. with myrrh,

  1948. aloes,

  1949. and cinnamon.

  1950. Come,

1951. let us take our fill

  1952. of love till morning.

  1953. Let us delight ourselves

  1954. with love.

  1955. The adulteress

  1956. arouses the man's senses

1957. in order to take advantage

  1958. of him.

1959. She has already seized him

  1960. and kissed him

  1961. in verse 13.

  1962. Now she entices him

  1963. with even more pleasure.

1964. The couch is parallel to bed.

1965. It refers not to where you sit,

1966. but to where you sleep,

  1967. where you recline.

1968. And she has covered her bed

  1969. with soft, luxurious,

  1970. imported linen

  1971. from Egypt

  1972. for tactile pleasure.

  1973. Soft.

1974. She has perfumed her bed

  1975. with myrrh,

  1976. aloes,

  1977. and cinnamon

  1978. for olfactory pressure

  1979. for her to delight

  1980. the smell.

  1981. These are spices

  1982. that are mentioned

  1983. in Song of Songs

    Song of Solomon 4:14

  1984. chapter 4,

  1985. verse 14

  1986. as arousing romantic love.

  1987. She continues,

1988. let us take our fill.

  1989. Literally,

1990. that means drink our fill

  1991. of love till morning.

  1992. Let us delight ourselves

  1993. with love.

  1994. She's now even offering

  1995. gustatory pleasure,

  1996. taste,

1997. even if it's only euphemism

  1998. for sexual intercourse.

  1999. In short,

  2000. the adulteress arouses

  2001. all of the man's

  2002. sensual desires.

  2003. We need to learn

  2004. to control,

  2005. to have self-control,

  2006. to control these desires

  2007. if we are not

  2008. to be overcome

  2009. by the tactics

  2010. of the adulteress.

  2011. And fourth,

  2012. finally,

  2013. the adulteress

  2014. promises impunity.

  2015. She says in verses

  2016. 9 to 20,

  2017. for my husband

  2018. is not at home.

  2019. He has gone

  2020. on a long journey.

2021. He took a bag of money

  2022. with him

  2023. at full moon

2024. and he will come home.

  2025. In other words,

  2026. she's saying,

  2027. you have nothing

  2028. to worry about

  2029. because my husband's

  2030. not home

2031. and he won't be home

  2032. for a long time.

  2033. I saw him

  2034. take a full bag

  2035. of money,

  2036. which means

  2037. he took a lot

  2038. of provisions,

  2039. which suggests

  2040. a long journey.

  2041. He won't be back

  2042. till full moon,

  2043. which is probably

  2044. referring to 14 days

  2045. if she made her

  2046. sacrifices

  2047. in new moon.

  2048. But this too

  2049. is a lie

  2050. since the father

  2051. already told us

  2052. in verse 29

  2053. that none

  2054. who touches her

  2055. will go unpunished.

  2056. And verse 34

  2057. warned us

  2058. that the jealousy

  2059. in chapter 6,

  2060. verse 34,

  2061. jealousy makes

  2062. a man furious

  2063. and he will not

  2064. spare when he

  2065. takes revenge.

  2066. But that's the devil's

  2067. deceptive tactic,

  2068. isn't it?

  2069. He always makes us

  2070. think that we can

  2071. get away with it.

  2072. No one will see.

  2073. No one will know.

  2074. In the secret

  2075. of her apartment,

  2076. in the secret

  2077. of your private browser,

  2078. no one will know.

  2079. But all these things

  2080. have a way

  2081. of being revealed.

  2082. It's just a matter

  2083. of time

  2084. because the all-seeing

  2085. and all-knowing God

  2086. will hold you

  2087. to account.

  2088. And notice how

  2089. blunt and shameless

  2090. this adulteress is.

  2091. She plainly says

  2092. that her husband

  2093. is coming back.

  2094. She's implying

  2095. that, hey,

2096. by the time she comes

  2097. back, you better

  2098. be out of here.

  2099. She's not offering

  2100. this young man

  2101. love and commitment.

  2102. She's blatantly

  2103. soliciting casual

  2104. sex without commitment.

  2105. But that, too,

  2106. appeals to the folly

  2107. of the young man.

  2108. Not only is this

  2109. adulteress promising

  2110. impunity,

  2111. she also guarantees

  2112. immunity from any

  2113. sort of responsibility.

2114. You mean I can have you

  2115. without giving you

  2116. anything?

2117. You mean I can use you

  2118. for pleasure

  2119. without taking any

  2120. responsibility

2121. to take care of you?

  2122. In this way,

  2123. with much seductive speech,

  2124. she persuades him.

  2125. With her smooth talk,

  2126. she compels him.

2127. It says in verse 21,

2128. The young man is by this

  2129. point completely taken.

2130. It says in verses 22-23,

2131. All at once he follows

2132. her, as an ox goes

  2133. to the slaughter,

2134. whereas a stag is caught

  2135. fast till an arrow

  2136. pierces its liver.

  2137. As a bird rushes

  2138. into a snare,

  2139. he does not know

2140. that it will cost him

  2141. his life.

  2142. Already in chapter 6,

  2143. verses 25-26,

  2144. the sage used words

  2145. like hunt and capture

  2146. to refer to what

  2147. the adulteress does.

  2148. And here he is

  2149. expanding that image.

2150. The adulteress is a predator

  2151. and the foolish man

  2152. who engages her

  2153. is a prey.

  2154. Men who commit adultery

  2155. sometimes describe

2156. the thrill of the hunt.

2157. They say that there is

  2158. something exciting

  2159. about pursuing

  2160. a forbidden woman,

  2161. of stealing

  2162. a woman from a neighbor.

  2163. But the wise man

  2164. knows that the feeling

  2165. of hunting

  2166. is an illusion.

  2167. You are actually

  2168. the prey being hunted.

  2169. Your supposed

  2170. supposed conquest

  2171. is actually

  2172. your fatal defeat.

  2173. Like an ox

  2174. going to the slaughter.

  2175. Like a stag

  2176. caught

  2177. and pierced

  2178. by an arrow.

  2179. Bird rushing

  2180. into a snare.

  2181. The adulteress

2182. has set a death trap.

  2183. And the father

  2184. closes his lesson

  2185. on the price

  2186. and lure

  2187. of the adulteress

  2188. the same way

  2189. he opened his teaching

  2190. by exhorting them,

  2191. his sons,

  2192. to heed his words.

  2193. He says in verses

  2194. 24-27,

  2195. And now,

  2196. O sons,

  2197. listen to me

  2198. and be attentive

  2199. to the words

  2200. of my mouth.

  2201. Let not your heart

  2202. turn aside

  2203. to her ways.

  2204. Do not stray

  2205. into her paths.

  2206. For many a victim

  2207. has she laid low

  2208. and all her slain

  2209. are a mighty throng.

  2210. Her house

2211. is the way to shield

  2212. going down

  2213. to the chambers

  2214. of death.

  2215. The adulteress's

  2216. bedchamber

  2217. of pleasure

  2218. is in reality

  2219. a foyer

  2220. that leads

  2221. to the chamber

  2222. of death.

  2223. Far from being

  2224. her only

  2225. extramarital lover,

  2226. she has laid low

  2227. and slain

  2228. a mighty throng

  2229. of virile men.

  2230. And throughout

  2231. chapter 7,

  2232. the father has

  2233. emphasized

  2234. the importance

  2235. of words,

  2236. hasn't he?

2237. He said in verse 1,

  2238. My son,

  2239. keep my words.

  2240. And in verse 2,

  2241. keep my teaching.

  2242. He says again

  2243. in verse 24,

  2244. Listen to me,

  2245. be attentive

  2246. to my words.

  2247. And this father's

  2248. teaching

  2249. on the one hand

  2250. is contrasted

  2251. with the seductive

  2252. speech,

  2253. literally seductive

  2254. teaching

  2255. and smooth

  2256. talk of the

  2257. adulteress

  2258. in verse 21.

  2259. So we are

  2260. faced with the

  2261. choice of

  2262. listening to

  2263. the father,

  2264. his teaching,

  2265. or the adulterer's

  2266. teaching.

  2267. These competing

  2268. words are always

  2269. circulating around us.

  2270. They're really

  2271. actually competing

  2272. worldviews.

  2273. And we have to

  2274. choose to believe

  2275. the commandments

  2276. of God.

  2277. Because the reality

  2278. is underneath

  2279. every sin,

  2280. there is

  2281. unbelief.

  2282. Behind every

  2283. sin,

  2284. behind every

  2285. adultery,

  2286. there is the

  2287. lie of the

  2288. enemy that we

  2289. have believed

  2290. instead of the

  2291. word of God.

  2292. The lie that

  2293. God is withholding

  2294. something desirable

  2295. and good from us

  2296. that you should

  2297. take into your

  2298. own hands.

  2299. the lie that

  2300. we can enjoy

  2301. sin and escape

  2302. its inevitable

  2303. consequences of

  2304. death.

  2305. We must expose

  2306. these lies with

  2307. the truths of

  2308. God.

  2309. We must treasure

  2310. up the commandments

  2311. of God so that

  2312. they keep us

  2313. from the trap

  2314. of the adulteress.

  2315. But what are

  2316. we to do

  2317. since we have

  2318. already fallen

  2319. for the trap

  2320. of the adulteress?

  2321. What are we to

  2322. do when we are

  2323. already in the

  2324. foyer that leads

  2325. to the chamber

  2326. of death?

  2327. Throughout the

  2328. book of Hosea,

  2329. God compares

  2330. himself to an

  2331. aggrieved husband

  2332. and his people

  2333. to an adulterous

  2334. wife.

  2335. He contends

  2336. with his people

  2337. in the book of

  2338. Hosea that in

  2339. spite of having

  2340. made a covenant

  2341. with him,

  2342. that they have

  2343. whored after

  2344. other gods.

  2345. That's what we

  2346. have done to

  2347. God.

  2348. all of humanity

  2349. belongs to what

  2350. Jesus described

  2351. in Mark 8, 38

  2352. as an adulterous

  2353. generation.

  2354. We are all

  2355. guilty,

  2356. deserving of

  2357. death and

  2358. condemnation.

  2359. And as

  2360. Proverbs 6,

    Proverbs 6:35

  2361. verse 35

  2362. said,

  2363. the husband

  2364. who was cheated

  2365. on will

  2366. accept no

  2367. compensation.

  2368. The word that

  2369. is translated

  2370. compensation is

  2371. the same Hebrew

  2372. word that is

  2373. translated in

  2374. multiple places

  2375. throughout the

  2376. Old Testament

  2377. as ransom.

  2378. Ransom is

  2379. the price of

  2380. redemption.

  2381. It is the

  2382. payment for

  2383. wrongdoing to

  2384. settle grievances

  2385. of the

  2386. injured

  2387. party.

  2388. But there

  2389. is no

  2390. adequate

  2391. ransom

  2392. for

  2393. adultery.

  2394. And the

  2395. same is

  2396. true for

  2397. spiritual

  2398. adultery.

  2399. Only

  2400. punishment

  2401. that

  2402. suffices

  2403. is death.

  2404. How do

  2405. you put a

  2406. price tag on

  2407. the loyalty

  2408. of your

  2409. spouse,

  2410. on the

  2411. love of

  2412. your spouse?

  2413. How do

  2414. you put a

  2415. price tag

  2416. on

  2417. faithfulness?

  2418. And we

  2419. have been

  2420. unfaithful

  2421. to God.

  2422. There is

  2423. no ransom

  2424. that can

  2425. pay for

  2426. that sin.

  2427. But in

  2428. that same

  2429. book of

  2430. Hosea,

  2431. when God

  2432. is indicting

  2433. His people

  2434. of adultery,

  2435. in chapter

  2436. 11 verses

  2437. 8 to 9,

  2438. God also

  2439. says this.

  2440. This was

  2441. our assurance

  2442. of pardon

  2443. this morning.

  2444. God says,

  2445. How can I

  2446. give you

  2447. up, O

  2448. Ephraim?

  2449. How can I

  2450. hand you

  2451. over, O

  2452. Israel?

  2453. How can I

  2454. make you

  2455. like Adma?

  2456. How can I

  2457. treat you

  2458. like Zeboim?

  2459. My heart

  2460. recoils

  2461. within me.

  2462. My compassion

  2463. grows warm

  2464. and tender.

  2465. I will not

  2466. execute my

  2467. burning anger.

  2468. I will not

  2469. again destroy

  2470. Ephraim,

  2471. for I am

  2472. God and

  2473. not a man,

  2474. the Holy

  2475. One in

  2476. your midst.

  2477. And I

  2478. will not

  2479. come in

  2480. wrath.

  2481. Even as

  2482. our Holy

  2483. God is

  2484. repulsed

  2485. by our

  2486. adultery,

  2487. His very

  2488. heart

  2489. recoils

  2490. within Him.

  2491. It draws

  2492. back

  2493. from severe

  2494. judgment.

  2495. Even as

  2496. our Holy

  2497. God,

  2498. our just

  2499. God,

  2500. is burning

  2501. with righteous

  2502. anger and

  2503. wrath against

  2504. sinners,

  2505. His compassion

  2506. at the same

  2507. time grows

  2508. warm and

  2509. tender.

  2510. And God

  2511. says that

  2512. He does

  2513. this,

  2514. for I am

  2515. God and

  2516. not a man,

  2517. the Holy

  2518. One in your

  2519. midst,

  2520. and I will

  2521. not come

  2522. in wrath.

  2523. God,

  2524. we don't

  2525. deserve this.

  2526. It is like

  2527. a man to

  2528. be vengeful

  2529. and wrathful

  2530. and to be

  2531. severe in

  2532. judgment,

  2533. but it is

  2534. like God

  2535. to be

  2536. merciful,

  2537. slow to

  2538. anger,

  2539. forgiving,

  2540. wickedness,

  2541. and rebellion.

  2542. And yes,

  2543. God is

  2544. holy.

  2545. Yes,

  2546. God is

  2547. just,

  2548. and His

  2549. judgment day

  2550. will come,

  2551. but His

  2552. heart of hearts,

  2553. in His heart of

  2554. hearts,

  2555. He recoils,

  2556. He melts

  2557. with compassion

  2558. for undeserving

  2559. sinners like us,

  2560. and so the

  2561. Lord God

  2562. Himself makes

  2563. a way for

  2564. our redemption,

  2565. and He

  2566. sends

  2567. His only

  2568. Son,

  2569. the Son of

  2570. God,

  2571. to take on

  2572. human flesh,

  2573. to become

  2574. the Son of

  2575. Man.

  2576. And it

  2577. says in

  2578. Matthew 20,

  2579. 28,

  2580. that even

  2581. the Son of

  2582. Man came

  2583. not to be

  2584. served,

  2585. but to

  2586. serve,

  2587. and to

  2588. give His

  2589. life as

  2590. a ransom

  2591. for many.

  2592. Jesus,

  2593. our

  2594. bridegroom,

  2595. the one

  2596. we were

  2597. betrothed

  2598. to,

  2599. the husband

  2600. we cheated

  2601. on,

  2602. takes

  2603. upon

  2604. Himself

  2605. the penalty

  2606. of death

  2607. that we

  2608. deserve for

  2609. our infidelity.

  2610. and He

  2611. dies on

  2612. the cross

  2613. for our

  2614. sins.

  2615. And that's

  2616. why He

  2617. says in

  2618. Ephesians 5,

  2619. 25 to

  2620. 27,

  2621. husband,

  2622. love your

  2623. wives as

  2624. Christ loved

  2625. the church

  2626. and gave

  2627. Himself up

  2628. for her,

  2629. that He

  2630. might sanctify

  2631. her,

  2632. having

  2633. cleansed her

  2634. by the

  2635. washing of

  2636. water with

  2637. the word,

  2638. so that He

  2639. might present

  2640. the church

  2641. to Himself

  2642. in splendor

  2643. without spot

  2644. or wrinkle

  2645. or any such

  2646. thing,

  2647. that she

  2648. might be

  2649. holy and

  2650. without

  2651. blemish.

  2652. our

  2653. Heavenly

  2654. Father

  2655. paid the

  2656. bright price

  2657. of our

  2658. redemption

  2659. and our

  2660. eternal

  2661. bridegroom

  2662. Jesus Christ

  2663. was the

  2664. ransom price

  2665. He paid.

  2666. And it is

  2667. through this

  2668. wonderful news

  2669. that we call

  2670. the gospel

  2671. that we

  2672. are sanctified

  2673. as God's

  2674. people,

  2675. the church,

  2676. that we

  2677. are prepared

  2678. for our

  2679. heavenly

  2680. glorious

  2681. wedding day

  2682. when we

  2683. as God's

  2684. people will

  2685. be presented

  2686. to Jesus

  2687. in splendor

  2688. without spot

  2689. or wrinkle

  2690. or any

  2691. such thing.
