  1. Proverbs chapter 9 verses 1 to 18

    Proverbs 9 chapter mention

  2. To him who lacks sense, she says,

  3. Come, eat of my bread and drink of the wine I have mixed.

  4. Leave your simple ways and live and walk in the way of insight.

  5. Whoever corrects a scoffer gets himself abuse.

  6. And he who reproves a wicked man incurs injury.

  7. Do not reprove a scoffer or he will hate you.

  8. Reprove a wise man and he will love you.

  9. Give instruction to a wise man and he will be wiser still.

  10. Teach a righteous man and he will increase in learning.

  11. The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom.

  12. And the knowledge of the Holy One is insight.

  13. For by me your days will be multiplied and years will be added to your life.

  14. If you are wise, you are wise for yourself.

  15. If you scoff, you alone will bear it.

  16. The woman's folly is loud.

  17. She is seductive and knows nothing.

  18. She sits at the door of her house.

  19. She takes a seat on the highest places of the town.

  20. Calling to those who pass by, who are going straight on their way.

  21. Whoever is simple, let him turn in here.

  22. And to him who lacks sense, she says,

  23. Stolen water is sweet and bread eaten in secret is pleasant.

  24. But he does not know that the dead are there, that our guests are in the depths of Sheol.

  25. This is God's holy and authoritative word.

  26. As I mentioned earlier, chapters 1 to 9 is really a long prologue to the rest of Proverbs.

  27. And up to this point, the chapters are made up of longer narratives, poetic narratives.

  28. But starting in chapter 10, the short and witty sayings that we've come to associate with the word proverb predominate.

  29. So our passage for today then functions as kind of the conclusion of the prologue and a transition toward the rest of the book.

  30. Before we feast on the rich fare of wisdom's banquet in the rest of the Proverbs,

  31. we must first heed her call and humbly accept her invitation.

  32. That's what this passage is.

  33. And that's the main point of this passage, that only those who humble themselves and heed the call of wisdom

  34. will feast at her life-giving banquet.

  35. We see woman wisdom's call in verses 1 to 6.

  36. And then woman's folly's call, which is kind of a mirror image, contrasting image in verses 13 to 18.

  37. And then we see in the middle, as a point of emphasis, verses 7 to 12,

  38. which talks about the responses of the wise and the scoffer.

  39. And because it's intentionally structured in kind of this fashion to have mirroring images of woman wisdom and woman folly,

  40. and then in the middle, this how we ought to respond,

  41. we're going to look at woman wisdom's call and woman folly's call together,

  42. and then look at the response at the end.

  43. Let's look at verse 1.

  44. It tells us,

  45. Wisdom has built her house.

  46. She has hewn her seven pillars.

  47. The word house also means family or household.

  48. The building metaphor is primary here, as we can see in the mention of pillars.

  49. But woman wisdom's house building also foreshadows the building of households or families by her daughters.

  50. In chapter 14, verse 1, it says,

  51. The wisest of women builds her house, but folly with her own hands tears it down.

  52. Families thrive and homes flourish when there are wise women upholding them.

  53. That's why Psalm 144, verse 12, there also Psalm is praised,

    Psalms 144:12

  54. May our sons in their youth be like plants full grown,

  55. our daughters like corner pillars cut for the structure of a palace.

  56. Families are the foundation of society, and women are the pillars of those families.

  57. House building is not for the faint of heart.

  58. But while woman wisdom has built her house and hewn her pillars,

  59. we see in verse 14 that woman folly merely sits at the door of her house.

  60. This contrasts woman wisdom's industry with woman folly's laziness, her lethargy.

  61. Read verses 13 to 14 with me.

  62. The woman folly is loud.

  63. She's seductive and knows nothing.

  64. She sits at the door of her house.

  65. She takes a seat on the highest places of the town.

  66. So woman folly is loud.

  67. That's the same word that was used to describe the seductress in chapter 7, verse 11.

  68. She's loud and wayward is said there.

  69. Her feet do not stay at home.

  70. Now in the street, now in the market, in every corner she lies wait.

  71. The word loud means turbulent or restless.

  72. In contrast to woman wisdom who is busily working at her house,

  73. woman folly is an idle busybody,

  74. meddling in the affairs of others outside her home.

  75. She sits at the door of her house.

  76. She takes a seat on the highest places of the town.

  77. Woman wisdom is an industrious homebody.

  78. Woman folly is an idle busybody.

  79. She's always sitting, sitting about here and there.

  80. Woman wisdom, verse 2 continues,

  81. has slaughtered her beasts.

  82. She has mixed her wine.

  83. She has also set her table.

  84. So woman wisdom has finished building her house

  85. and has invited guests for a sumptuous feast,

  86. which represents the gourmet dishes of wisdom laid out in the rest of Proverbs.

  87. But this is contrasted with the description of wisdom,

  88. of woman folly in verse 13.

  89. It says,

  90. The woman folly is seductive and knows nothing.

  91. The word seductive,

  92. if you look at the footnote on the English Standard Version Bibles,

  93. if you have that,

  94. it says it can also be translated as full of simpleness.

  95. A woman wisdom's table is full of the richest fears of wisdom,

  96. but woman folly's head is empty.

  97. It's filled only with simplicity and ignorance.

  98. She has prepared no meat.

  99. She has mixed no wine.

  100. She has set no table.

  101. She has made no diligent preparation for her banquet.

  102. And the way they issued their respective invitations also differ.

  103. In verses 3 to 4,

  104. woman wisdom has sent out her young woman

  105. to call from the highest places in the town.

  106. Messengers have been formally sent out to invite the guests

  107. while woman wisdom completes her preparations at home.

  108. This shows intention and care.

  109. The verb call is singular,

  110. which shows that the young women do not speak for themselves,

  111. but rather are their mouthpieces for the woman wisdom.

  112. They speak for her.

  113. And these daughters of woman wisdom represent the messengers,

  114. the sages,

  115. such as the father and mother of this Proverbs,

  116. of the book of Proverbs,

  117. who relay Solomon's God-given wisdom to the future generations.

  118. In contrast to this,

  119. look at verses 14 to 15.

  120. Tell us that woman folly takes a seat on the highest places of the town,

  121. calling to those who pass by,

  122. who are going straight on their way.

  123. She has no messengers.

  124. All she does is try to distract and derail passersby.

  125. Her evil intentions are exposed in the fact that she takes unwitting passersby,

  126. those who may otherwise be proceeding straight on their way,

  127. to veer aside,

  128. to go astray.

  129. And notice also that both call from the highest places,

  130. the most visible location in town,

  131. in order to reach as many people as possible.

  132. In the ancient Near East,

  133. which is the context in which this book is written,

  134. only one person has the right to dwell on the highest point of the city.

  135. It's either the God of that city,

  136. in the temple,

  137. or the king of that city,

  138. in the palace.

  139. In the same way,

  140. in Jerusalem,

  141. the temple was at the peak of Mount Zion.

  142. And this confirms what we know from chapter 8 already,

  143. that woman wisdom stands for God,

  144. represents God.

  145. She is the word of God,

  146. by which the world was created.

  147. And as God's people say of the Lord in Jeremiah,

    Jeremiah 17:12

  148. chapter 17,

  149. verse 12,

  150. a glorious throne,

  151. literally a glorious seat,

  152. set on high from the beginning,

  153. is the place of our sanctuary.

  154. Only God deserves to sit on His glorious throne,

  155. on the highest place,

  156. and that's where His people are to worship Him.

  157. And so woman wisdom issues her invitations from the highest places in the town.

  158. The problem,

  159. however,

  160. is that woman folly

  161. also calls out from the highest places of the town.

  162. In fact,

  163. it says that she takes a seat.

  164. That's the same word that's often translated throne,

  165. or the seat of honor.

  166. She takes a seat on the highest places of the town.

  167. Common people back in the day did not sit on chairs.

  168. They would usually sit on floors.

  169. Or if they had extraordinary accommodations,

  170. they would sit on stools and benches.

  171. Only those in authority had chairs.

  172. Only the teachers sat on chairs.

  173. This is the origin of the practice of giving,

  174. gifting a literal chair

  175. to a teacher who has recently been promoted to professorship.

  176. And Proverbs chapter 20, verse 8,

    Proverbs 20:8

  177. mentions that a king who sits on the throne of judgment,

  178. the word throne,

  179. again,

  180. is the same word as seat.

  181. 1 Samuel 1, verse 9,

    1 Samuel 1:9

  182. says,

  183. Eli the priest was sitting on the seat

  184. beside the doorpost of the temple of the Lord.

  185. The seat by the temple

  186. from which the priests rendered their verdicts

  187. for God's people.

  188. And similarly,

  189. Matthew 23, verse 2,

    Matthew 23:2

  190. says that the scribes and the Pharisees

  191. sit on Moses' seat.

  192. It's a place of authority,

  193. prominence,

  194. teaching.

  195. So the fact that woman folly

  196. takes a seat

  197. on the highest places of the town

  198. almost certainly represents

  199. a place of prominence

  200. and of idolatrous worship.

  201. This brazen woman,

  202. despite the fact that she is full of simpleness

  203. and knows nothing,

  204. as verse 13 told us,

  205. presumes to sit on a seat

  206. on the highest places.

  207. She presumes to judge.

  208. She presumes to teach.

  209. She is an imposter.

  210. Ecclesiastes chapter 10,

    Ecclesiastes 10:5–6

  211. verses 5 to 6,

  212. laments the situation.

  213. It says,

  214. there is an evil

  215. that I have seen

  216. under the sun,

  217. as it were an error

  218. proceeding from the ruler.

  219. Folly

  220. is set

  221. in many

  222. high

  223. places.

  224. Ecclesiastes

    Ecclesiastes 10:5–6

  225. chapter 10,

  226. verses 5 to 6,

  227. says,

  228. folly is set

  229. in many

  230. high

  231. places.

  232. So don't believe

  233. something

  234. simply because

  235. someone in position

  236. of authority

  237. has said it.

  238. Remember that

  239. woman folly

  240. takes a seat

  241. on the highest

  242. places of the town.

  243. From the state houses

  244. and white houses

  245. built atop

  246. many hills

  247. throughout the world.

  248. From the ivory towers

  249. of academia,

  250. from the verified

  251. social media accounts

  252. of celebrities

  253. on Beverly Hills,

  254. from the high platforms

  255. and loud voices

  256. of Instagram

  257. and YouTube stars,

  258. from many

  259. of the highest

  260. places in the world,

  261. folly comes

  262. spewing forth.

  263. Their views

  264. might have currency

  265. in the culture.

  266. Their views

  267. might sound

  268. plausible,

  269. but if they have

  270. no tinge

  271. of the fear

  272. of God,

  273. no sense

  274. of the wisdom

  275. of God,

  276. no tint

  277. of the righteousness

  278. of God,

  279. then it's all folly.

  280. That's why

  281. we must test

  282. everything by

  283. the wisdom

  284. of God

  285. revealed in

  286. God's word.

  287. 16th century

  288. theologian

  289. John Calvin

  290. calls scripture

  291. the straight edge

  292. to which we

  293. must be shaped.

  294. Slice everything

  295. by the straight edge

  296. of God's word

  297. and discard

  298. the rest.

  299. Discard all

  300. excess.

  301. Let's look

  302. more closely

  303. at the respective

  304. invitations

  305. of woman wisdom

  306. and woman folly.

  307. what they offer

  308. their provisions

  309. also are worlds

  310. apart.

  311. Verse 5,

  312. woman wisdom

  313. says,

  314. come,

  315. eat of my bread

  316. and drink

  317. of the wine

  318. I have mixed.

  319. Now contrast

  320. that with the

  321. meager proportions

  322. of the woman

  323. folly in verse 17.

  324. Stolen water

  325. is sweet

  326. and bread

  327. eaten in secret

  328. is pleasant.

  329. Wisdom

  330. offers bread,

  331. but folly

  332. offers bread

  333. eaten in secret,

  334. forbidden bread.

  335. There's an

  336. Arabic proverb

  337. that says

  338. everything forbidden

  339. is sweet.

  340. That is

  341. precisely

  342. woman wisdom's

  343. tactic.

  344. Woman folly's

  345. tactic,

  346. sorry.

  347. Just as the

  348. crafty serpent

  349. in Genesis 3

  350. enticed Eve

  351. to eat the

  352. forbidden fruit

  353. by impugning

  354. the goodness

  355. of God,

  356. she said,

  357. you will not

  358. surely die

  359. when you eat

  360. of that forbidden

  361. fruit,

  362. for God knows

  363. that when you

  364. eat of it

  365. your eyes

  366. will be opened

  367. and you will

  368. be like God

  369. knowing good

  370. and evil.

  371. That's how

  372. the serpent

  373. tempted Adam

  374. and Eve.

  375. That's Satan's

  376. bread and butter.

  377. That boundary

  378. that God has

  379. placed around you,

  380. that's not there

  381. to protect you,

  382. that's there

  383. to restrict you,

  384. deprive you

  385. of good.

  386. You know

  387. why that thing

  388. is forbidden?

  389. Not because

  390. it's bad for you,

  391. but because

  392. it's too good.

  393. God's withholding

  394. it from you.

  395. He doesn't

  396. have your best

  397. interest in mind.

  398. that's Satan's

  399. tactic.

  400. That's woman

  401. folly's tactic.

  402. She says,

  403. stolen water

  404. is sweet

  405. and bread

  406. eaten in secret

  407. is pleasant.

  408. And actually,

  409. that much

  410. is true,

  411. isn't it?

  412. Sin is

  413. often

  414. pleasurable.

  415. the problem,

  416. however,

  417. is that

  418. it's only

  419. half true.

  420. And a half

  421. truth

  422. masquerading

  423. as a whole

  424. truth

  425. is a whole

  426. lie,

  427. as is often

  428. said.

  429. Notice the

  430. contrast between

  431. what woman

  432. wisdom promises

  433. up front

  434. in verse 6

  435. and what woman

  436. folly fails

  437. to disclose

  438. in verse 18.

  439. Woman wisdom

  440. makes her offer

  441. up front

  442. in verse 6,

  443. leave your

  444. simple ways

  445. and live

  446. and walk

  447. in the way

  448. of insight.

  449. She promises

  450. life.

  451. That's the end,

  452. the goal of wisdom

  453. that that's

  454. what you're in

  455. for when you

  456. accept her

  457. invitation to

  458. join her banquet.

  459. You'll be given

  460. life abundant,

  461. eternal life.

  462. Now contrast

  463. that with

  464. verse 18.

  465. But he does

  466. not know

  467. that the dead

  468. are there,

  469. that her guests

  470. are in the

  471. depths of Sheol.

  472. Woman folly,

  473. stolen water

  474. and secret bread

  475. lead to death.

  476. Her house

  477. is a foyer

  478. that leads

  479. to the chamber

  480. of death.

  481. Her guests

  482. are in

  483. the depths

  484. of Sheol,

  485. the realm

  486. of the dead.

  487. But that's

  488. the thing,

  489. woman folly

  490. does not

  491. disclose

  492. that fact.

  493. It's not,

  494. there's no

  495. disclaimer.

  496. It's not

  497. in the fine

  498. print.

  499. It's the author

  500. of Proverbs

  501. that discloses

  502. this hidden

  503. fact to us.

  504. Woman folly's

  505. invitation

  506. is a deceptive

  507. half-truth

  508. and he

  509. who falls

  510. for her

  511. does not

  512. know this.

  513. This whole

  514. section on

  515. woman folly

  516. begins and

  517. ends with

  518. the phrase

  519. does not

  520. know.

  521. Verse 13

  522. says the

  523. woman folly

  524. knows nothing,

  525. literally does

  526. not know

  527. anything.

  528. And verse 18

  529. says that her

  530. dull subjects

  531. does not

  532. know.

  533. This is the

  534. deficiency that

  535. Proverbs is

  536. trying to

  537. correct.

  538. Sin is

  539. pleasurable for

  540. a time,

  541. yes,

  542. but like

  543. a drug

  544. that is

  545. enjoyable

  546. at first

  547. but enslaves

  548. and kills

  549. at last.

  550. Sin has

  551. a bitter

  552. end.

  553. Consider this

  554. parallel from

  555. Proverbs

    Proverbs 5:3–5

  556. chapter 5

  557. verses 3

  558. to 5.

  559. For the

  560. lips of a

  561. forbidden

  562. woman drip

  563. honey and

  564. her speech

  565. is smoother

  566. than oil.

  567. But in the

  568. end she is

  569. bitter as

  570. wormwood,

  571. sharp as

  572. a two-edged

  573. sword.

  574. Her feet

  575. go down

  576. to death.

  577. Her steps

  578. follow the

  579. path to

  580. shield.

  581. The beginning

  582. of sin

  583. is sweet,

  584. but its

  585. end is

  586. bitter.

  587. The beginning

  588. of sin

  589. is smooth,

  590. but its

  591. end is

  592. sharp and

  593. cutting.

  594. It makes

  595. you feel

  596. alive for

  597. a moment,

  598. but it

  599. makes you

  600. dead forever.

  601. And that

  602. is what

  603. is ultimately

  604. at stake.

  605. Wisdom

  606. is not

  607. merely

  608. something that

  609. is expedient

  610. for us to

  611. have to

  612. navigate life.

  613. Folly

  614. is not

  615. merely an

  616. inconvenience.

  617. It's a

  618. matter of

  619. life and

  620. death.

  621. Woman

  622. wisdom

  623. said at

  624. the end

  625. of chapter

  626. 8,

  627. whoever

  628. finds me

  629. finds life

  630. and obtains

  631. favor from

  632. the Lord,

  633. but he

  634. who fails

  635. to find

  636. me injures

  637. himself.

  638. All who

  639. hate me

  640. love death.

  641. If you

  642. spurn

  643. wisdom,

  644. if you

  645. despise

  646. wisdom,

  647. you're not

  648. merely embracing

  649. a hard

  650. life,

  651. making life

  652. hard for

  653. yourself.

  654. You are

  655. loving

  656. death.

  657. And the

  658. language of

  659. wisdom and

  660. folly are

  661. commonly used

  662. in our

  663. culture,

  664. newspapers

  665. and news

  666. anchors

  667. often describe

  668. a crime

  669. as senseless.

  670. They use

  671. the word

  672. to refer to

  673. the fact

  674. that this

  675. crime had

  676. no rhyme

  677. or reason.

  678. It lacked

  679. sense.

  680. But in

  681. reality,

  682. all sins,

  683. even the

  684. sins that

  685. are celebrated

  686. in our

  687. culture,

  688. are senseless

  689. because they

  690. lead to

  691. death.

  692. A

  693. politician

  694. caught in

  695. a consensual

  696. extramarital

  697. relationship

  698. will never

  699. admit to

  700. sin,

  701. but they

  702. will admit

  703. that they

  704. were short

  705. sighted or

  706. inappropriate,

  707. that it

  708. was a

  709. lapse in

  710. judgment.

  711. But we

  712. must not

  713. let such

  714. euphemisms

  715. hide the

  716. ugliness

  717. and the

  718. morbid

  719. consequences

  720. of sin.

  721. Cornelius

  722. Plantinga

  723. puts it

  724. this way

  725. in his

  726. book,

  727. not the

  728. way it's

  729. supposed to

  730. be.

  731. A sinner

  732. will often

  733. not concede

  734. that he

  735. has been

  736. a knave,

  737. but he

  738. feels obliged

  739. to concede

  740. in effect

  741. that he

  742. has been

  743. a fool.

  744. And in

  745. so doing,

  746. ironically,

  747. he enters

  748. the mainstream

  749. of biblical

  750. thought and

  751. paves the

  752. path to

  753. sin.

  754. The Bible

  755. speaks of

  756. foolishness,

  757. folly of

  758. rejecting

  759. wisdom.

  760. sin.

  761. That's in

  762. the mainstream

  763. of how the

  764. Bible speaks

  765. of sin.

  766. And the

  767. bad news

  768. is that we

  769. have all

  770. sinned.

  771. We've all

  772. been fools.

  773. Note well

  774. that woman

  775. wisdom and

  776. woman folly

  777. are competing

  778. for the

  779. exact same

  780. crowd.

  781. Compare what

  782. they say in

  783. verse 4 and

  784. verse 16.

  785. It's the

  786. only part of

  787. the contrasting

  788. sections that

  789. is exactly

  790. identical.

  791. Whoever is

  792. simple, let

  793. him turn in

  794. here.

  795. The address

  796. him who

  797. lacks sense.

  798. The simple

  799. are those who

  800. have not yet

  801. turned toward

  802. the path of

  803. wisdom, but

  804. those who

  805. have not yet

  806. settled into

  807. the path of

  808. folly either.

  809. And there is

  810. good news

  811. embedded in

  812. this passage.

  813. It's fitting

  814. that woman

  815. folly would

  816. target those

  817. who are

  818. simple and

  819. lack sense,

  820. isn't it?

  821. That sounds

  822. like her

  823. kind of

  824. crowd, the

  825. kind of

  826. people who

  827. would be

  828. duped by

  829. her half

  830. truth.

  831. But what

  832. is remarkable

  833. is that woman

  834. wisdom also

  835. reaches out to

  836. the simpletons

  837. and the

  838. senseless.

  839. You would

  840. think that

  841. woman wisdom

  842. would leave

  843. the fools to

  844. woman folly

  845. and invite only

  846. those who are

  847. wise and

  848. full of

  849. understanding to

  850. come to

  851. her banquet.

  852. But she

  853. doesn't do

  854. that.

  855. She says in

  856. verses 4 to

  857. 6,

  858. whoever is

  859. simple,

  860. let him

  861. turn in

  862. here.

  863. To him

  864. who lacks

  865. sense,

  866. she says,

  867. come eat

  868. of my

  869. bread and

  870. drink of

  871. the wine

  872. I have

  873. mixed.

  874. Leave your

  875. simple ways

  876. and live

  877. and walk

  878. in the way

  879. of insight.

  880. What a

  881. gracious and

  882. lavish invitation.

  883. Though we

  884. have all

  885. sinned,

  886. though we

  887. have all

  888. had our

  889. share of

  890. godless

  891. foolishness

  892. in our

  893. lives,

  894. wisdom invites

  895. us to

  896. partake in

  897. her banquet.

  898. Her

  899. banquet is

  900. not a

  901. high-browed,

  902. high-nosed

  903. affair.

  904. It's not an

  905. exclusive party

  906. for those of

  907. righteous and

  908. noble bearing.

  909. It's for

  910. simpletons and

  911. the sinners

  912. like us.

  913. And

  914. wisdom's

  915. banquet

  916. prefigures

  917. the heavenly

  918. banquet that

  919. Jesus speaks

  920. of in

  921. Luke chapter

    Luke 14 chapter mention

  922. 14.

  923. There in

  924. Jesus'

  925. parable of

  926. the great

  927. banquet,

  928. the master

  929. of the

  930. feast says

  931. to his

  932. servants,

  933. go out

  934. quickly to

  935. the streets

  936. and lanes

  937. of the

  938. city and

  939. bring in

  940. the poor

  941. and crippled

  942. and blind

  943. and lame.

  944. In that

  945. day and age,

  946. the poor

  947. and the

  948. disabled were

  949. precisely the

  950. kinds of

  951. people that

  952. people omitted

  953. from their

  954. guest list.

  955. But Jesus

  956. seeks out

  957. precisely such

  958. people.

  959. that's

  960. because

  961. Jesus,

  962. when the

  963. Pharisees

  964. and the

  965. scribes

  966. grumbled

  967. at why

  968. he was

  969. dining with

  970. sinners and

  971. tax collectors

  972. in Luke

    Luke 5 chapter mention

  973. chapter 5,

  974. Jesus answered

  975. them this

  976. way,

  977. those who

  978. are well

  979. have no

  980. need of

  981. a physician,

  982. but those

  983. who are

  984. sick,

  985. I've not

  986. come to

  987. call the

  988. righteous,

  989. but sinners

  990. to repentance.

  991. That's the

  992. heart of God

  993. for sinners

  994. like you

  995. and me.

  996. we often

  997. superimpose

  998. on God

  999. the

  1000. characteristics

  1001. that we

  1002. see in

  1003. sinful

  1004. humanity.

  1005. In our

  1006. world,

  1007. beautiful

  1008. people

  1009. despise

  1010. ugly

  1011. people.

  1012. In our

  1013. world,

  1014. sophisticated

  1015. people despise

  1016. simple-minded

  1017. people.

  1018. In our

  1019. world,

  1020. wealthy

  1021. people despise

  1022. poor

  1023. people.

  1024. Successful

  1025. people despise

  1026. failed

  1027. people.

  1028. And so

  1029. we think

  1030. that since

  1031. God is so

  1032. holy,

  1033. and since

  1034. God is so

  1035. wise,

  1036. he must

  1037. despise us

  1038. and want

  1039. nothing to

  1040. do with

  1041. sinners and

  1042. fools like

  1043. us,

  1044. but this

  1045. cannot be

  1046. further from

  1047. the truth.

  1048. Woman

  1049. wisdom,

  1050. her target

  1051. audience,

  1052. are the

  1053. simpletons

  1054. and the

  1055. senseless

  1056. of this

  1057. world,

  1058. and the

  1059. wisdom of

  1060. God

  1061. beckons us

  1062. to come

  1063. to her

  1064. banquet.

  1065. And so

  1066. we're faced

  1067. with a

  1068. choice.

  1069. whether to

  1070. accept

  1071. woman

  1072. wisdom's

  1073. invitation

  1074. or woman

  1075. folly's

  1076. invitation,

  1077. and this

  1078. is the

  1079. most

  1080. consequential

  1081. decision we

  1082. make in

  1083. this life.

  1084. So verses

  1085. 7 to 12

  1086. seek to

  1087. guide us

  1088. by giving

  1089. us examples

  1090. of how the

  1091. wise and

  1092. the scoffer

  1093. respond to

  1094. woman wisdom.

  1095. verses 7

  1096. to 8

  1097. warn us,

  1098. whoever

  1099. corrects a

  1100. scoffer gets

  1101. himself abuse,

  1102. and he

  1103. who reproves

  1104. a wicked

  1105. man incurs

  1106. injury.

  1107. Do not

  1108. reprove a

  1109. scoffer or

  1110. he will

  1111. hate you.

  1112. The

  1113. scoffer

  1114. refers to

  1115. someone who

  1116. is too

  1117. prideful to

  1118. listen or

  1119. to submit to

  1120. anyone's

  1121. instruction.

  1122. He has an

  1123. over-inflated

  1124. ego.

  1125. He is

  1126. immune to

  1127. correction and

  1128. is never

  1129. known to

  1130. change his

  1131. mind.

  1132. Three times

  1133. the sage

  1134. tells us

  1135. that it

  1136. is no

  1137. use to

  1138. try to

  1139. correct the

  1140. scoffer

  1141. because when

  1142. you do,

  1143. you will

  1144. get yourself

  1145. abuse and

  1146. injury and

  1147. hatred.

  1148. The scoffer

  1149. will heap

  1150. abuses on

  1151. you and

  1152. berate you.

  1153. In trying to

  1154. help him,

  1155. you only earn

  1156. his hatred.

  1157. It reminds

  1158. me of what

  1159. Jesus said in

  1160. Matthew 7

    Matthew 7:6

  1161. verse 6,

  1162. Do not give

  1163. dogs what

  1164. is holy,

  1165. and do not

  1166. throw your

  1167. pearls before

  1168. pigs,

  1169. lest they

  1170. trample them

  1171. underfoot and

  1172. turn to

  1173. attack you.

  1174. The wise

  1175. man is a

  1176. study in

  1177. contrast.

  1178. It says in

  1179. verses 8 to

  1180. 9,

  1181. Reprove a

  1182. wise man

  1183. and he

  1184. will love

  1185. you.

  1186. Give

  1187. instruction to

  1188. a wise

  1189. man and

  1190. he will

  1191. be still

  1192. wiser.

  1193. Teach a

  1194. righteous man

  1195. and he will

  1196. increase in

  1197. learning.

  1198. This

  1199. threefold

  1200. affirmation of

  1201. the wise

  1202. man's

  1203. teachability

  1204. contrasts the

  1205. scoffer's

  1206. incorrigibility.

  1207. If you

  1208. prove a

  1209. scoffer,

  1210. he hates

  1211. you,

  1212. but if you

  1213. reprove a

  1214. wise man,

  1215. he loves

  1216. you.

  1217. If you

  1218. correct a

  1219. scoffer,

  1220. you get

  1221. abuse,

  1222. but if you

  1223. correct the

  1224. wise man,

  1225. he increases

  1226. in learning.

  1227. The word

  1228. learning in

  1229. verse 9 is a

  1230. noun form of

  1231. the verb

  1232. get in

  1233. verse 7,

  1234. so it

  1235. highlights the

  1236. contrast even

  1237. more.

  1238. When you

  1239. instruct a

  1240. scoffer that

  1241. bounces off,

  1242. he repels

  1243. instruction,

  1244. it bounces off

  1245. and strikes

  1246. you.

  1247. But if you

  1248. instruct the

  1249. wise man,

  1250. he gets

  1251. wisdom,

  1252. he learns.

  1253. It's ironic,

  1254. the scoffer who

  1255. needs wisdom

  1256. most rejects

  1257. it,

  1258. and the

  1259. wise man who

  1260. already has a

  1261. measure of

  1262. wisdom receives

  1263. it eagerly.

  1264. The wiser you

  1265. get, the

  1266. humbler you

  1267. get.

  1268. This is

  1269. because, as

  1270. verse 10 says,

  1271. the fear of

  1272. the Lord is

  1273. the beginning

  1274. of wisdom,

  1275. and the

  1276. knowledge of

  1277. the Holy

  1278. One is

  1279. insight.

  1280. To know

  1281. God is to

  1282. fear Him,

  1283. to revere

  1284. Him.

  1285. It refers not

  1286. merely to

  1287. knowing God

  1288. in a just

  1289. knowing about

  1290. Him, but

  1291. rather personally

  1292. knowing Him,

  1293. experientially

  1294. knowing Him.

  1295. And when you

  1296. know and

  1297. relate to

  1298. God rightly,

  1299. you revere

  1300. and worship

  1301. Him, you

  1302. obey Him.

  1303. To have the

  1304. fear of the

  1305. Lord is to

  1306. live in the

  1307. presence of

  1308. God, under

  1309. the authority

  1310. of God, and

  1311. for the glory

  1312. of God.

  1313. And that,

  1314. the fear of

  1315. the Lord is

  1316. the beginning,

  1317. not the

  1318. end of

  1319. wisdom.

  1320. When you

  1321. fear the

  1322. Lord, you

  1323. cannot be

  1324. slothful, because

  1325. you live under

  1326. His watchful eye.

  1327. When you

  1328. fear the

  1329. Lord, you

  1330. do not

  1331. gossip or

  1332. slander, because

  1333. you know He

  1334. hears you.

  1335. When you

  1336. fear the

  1337. Lord, you

  1338. do not

  1339. boast, because

  1340. you know how

  1341. indebted you

  1342. are to Him, and

  1343. how dependent you

  1344. are on Him.

  1345. When you

  1346. fear the

  1347. Lord, you

  1348. do not grumble

  1349. or complain

  1350. about your

  1351. life circumstances,

  1352. because you

  1353. submit to His

  1354. superior wisdom

  1355. and sovereignty.

  1356. When you

  1357. fear the

  1358. Lord, you

  1359. do not

  1360. oppress the

  1361. poor, the

  1362. widows, and

  1363. the orphans,

  1364. because you

  1365. know that He

  1366. will judge

  1367. justly.

  1368. When you

  1369. fear the

  1370. Lord, you

  1371. do not

  1372. fear what

  1373. man can

  1374. do to

  1375. you, because

  1376. you trust in

  1377. His sovereignty

  1378. and power.

  1379. The fear of

  1380. the Lord is

  1381. the beginning

  1382. of wisdom,

  1383. and the

  1384. knowledge of

  1385. Holy One

  1386. is insight.

  1387. And then

  1388. verse 11

  1389. provides further

  1390. incentive for

  1391. acquiring wisdom.

  1392. For by me

  1393. your days will

  1394. be multiplied

  1395. and years

  1396. will be added

  1397. to your

  1398. life.

  1399. Once again,

  1400. wisdom promises

  1401. life, and

  1402. verse 12

  1403. lays the

  1404. responsibility

  1405. squarely on

  1406. the individual's

  1407. shoulders.

  1408. If you are

  1409. wise, you are

  1410. wise for

  1411. yourself.

  1412. If you

  1413. scoff,

  1414. you alone

  1415. will bear

  1416. it.

  1417. This doesn't

  1418. mean that

  1419. your wisdom

  1420. or folly

  1421. doesn't affect

  1422. anyone else

  1423. in your life.

  1424. Human beings

  1425. were created

  1426. to be social

  1427. beings, and

  1428. for better or

  1429. worse, we

  1430. live in an

  1431. interconnected

  1432. world.

  1433. And so

  1434. everything you

  1435. do affects

  1436. other people.

  1437. If you

  1438. choose wisdom,

  1439. it will affect

  1440. those around

  1441. you.

  1442. If you

  1443. choose folly,

  1444. it will affect

  1445. those around

  1446. you.

  1447. Nonetheless,

  1448. the primary

  1449. beneficiary

  1450. will be

  1451. you.

  1452. You're not

  1453. choosing wisdom

  1454. primarily for

  1455. the benefit

  1456. of others.

  1457. This is for

  1458. yourself.

  1459. It will

  1460. benefit you.

  1461. It will

  1462. impart life

  1463. to you.

  1464. It's

  1465. therefore all

  1466. the more

  1467. urgent that

  1468. you choose

  1469. wisdom for

  1470. yourself.

  1471. It's your

  1472. responsibility

  1473. and yours

  1474. alone.

  1475. And this

  1476. digression,

  1477. or this

  1478. centerpiece

  1479. of the

  1480. responses of

  1481. the wise

  1482. man and

  1483. the scoffer

  1484. serve as a

  1485. warning to

  1486. woman wisdom's

  1487. target audience.

  1488. This simple.

  1489. Will you be a

  1490. wise man or

  1491. a scoffer?

  1492. That depends on

  1493. how you respond

  1494. to the call of

  1495. woman wisdom.

  1496. If you heed

  1497. her call, you

  1498. become a

  1499. wise man.

  1500. If you ignore

  1501. her call, you

  1502. become a

  1503. scoffer.

  1504. A

  1505. modernized

  1506. alternative

  1507. title for the

  1508. book of

  1509. Proverbs could

  1510. be God's

  1511. wisdom for

  1512. dummies or

  1513. life skills for

  1514. dummies.

  1515. I've never

  1516. owned any of

  1517. the books in

  1518. the four

  1519. dummies series.

  1520. You guys know

  1521. what I'm talking

  1522. about, right?

  1523. The popular

  1524. four dummies

  1525. series.

  1526. I think they

  1527. have one for

  1528. everything that

  1529. I can imagine.

  1530. But if I

  1531. owned one of

  1532. those books,

  1533. I think I'd

  1534. be embarrassed

  1535. to read it

  1536. in public.

  1537. Because in

  1538. my pride, I

  1539. want to be

  1540. seen reading

  1541. the book for

  1542. experts.

  1543. I want to be

  1544. reading the

  1545. book for

  1546. smarty pants,

  1547. not for

  1548. dummies.

  1549. And that's

  1550. precisely the

  1551. point.

  1552. Acquiring the

  1553. wisdom of

  1554. God requires

  1555. humility.

  1556. Wisdom calls

  1557. out the

  1558. simple.

  1559. We must

  1560. acknowledge that

  1561. we are

  1562. simple, that

  1563. we do lack

  1564. sense, that

  1565. we need

  1566. correction and

  1567. learning.

  1568. Only then do

  1569. we diligently

  1570. seek the

  1571. wisdom of

  1572. God.

  1573. As woman

  1574. wisdom invites

  1575. us to do

  1576. in verses

  1577. 4-6, we

  1578. must turn and

  1579. leave our

  1580. ways.

  1581. Leave our

  1582. simple ways.

  1583. In order to

  1584. walk in the

  1585. right path of

  1586. wisdom, it's

  1587. no use insisting

  1588. that you're on

  1589. the right path

  1590. anyway, or that

  1591. the sins that

  1592. you commit in

  1593. your life are

  1594. tolerable, that

  1595. they're okay.

  1596. That doesn't get

  1597. us anywhere.

  1598. In order to

  1599. walk in the

  1600. right path of

  1601. wisdom, we

  1602. must first admit

  1603. that we're

  1604. going in the

  1605. wrong direction

  1606. and turn.

  1607. That's what it

  1608. means to repent

  1609. of our sins and

  1610. to believe in

  1611. God.

  1612. It is then and

  1613. only then that

  1614. we become wise

  1615. because that's

  1616. the way that

  1617. God has chosen

  1618. to save

  1619. sinners.

  1620. As I

  1621. mentioned

  1622. earlier, woman

  1623. wisdom prefigures

  1624. Jesus Christ and

  1625. her promises

  1626. ultimately point

  1627. to and are

  1628. fulfilled by the

  1629. person and

  1630. work of Jesus

  1631. Christ.

  1632. Christ.

  1633. This is why

  1634. Jesus is

  1635. described in

  1636. 1 Corinthians

    1 Corinthians 1 chapter mention

  1637. chapter 1 as

  1638. the wisdom

  1639. from God.

  1640. Jesus has

  1641. prepared for us

  1642. a banquet that

  1643. imparts eternal

  1644. life.

  1645. But in order to

  1646. enter, we must

  1647. humble ourselves

  1648. and heed his

  1649. call.

  1650. We have all

  1651. eaten the

  1652. secret bread of

  1653. woman folly.

  1654. We have all

  1655. drunk her

  1656. stolen water.

  1657. and as her

  1658. guests, we

  1659. were destined

  1660. for the depths

  1661. of Sheol as

  1662. verse 18 says,

  1663. but God did

  1664. not give up on

  1665. us even then.

  1666. He sent his

  1667. only son, Jesus

  1668. Christ, the

  1669. wisdom from God

  1670. to rescue us.

  1671. Jesus,

  1672. left the glory

  1673. that he had with

  1674. the father from

  1675. before the world

  1676. began, took on

  1677. human flesh.

  1678. He humbled

  1679. himself and

  1680. became obedient

  1681. to death, even

  1682. death on a

  1683. cross.

  1684. Jesus, the

  1685. very incarnation

  1686. of the wisdom

  1687. of God, endured

  1688. the penalty of

  1689. folly that we

  1690. had incurred.

  1691. He takes our

  1692. place and

  1693. instead of us,

  1694. he descends to

  1695. the dead so

  1696. that from there

  1697. he might be

  1698. raised from the

  1699. dead to impart

  1700. his eternal

  1701. resurrection life

  1702. to all those

  1703. who turn aside

  1704. to him and

  1705. heed his call.

  1706. That's the

  1707. gospel of

  1708. Jesus Christ,

  1709. the good news

  1710. of Jesus Christ.

  1711. And this

  1712. wisdom confounds

  1713. the world.

  1714. Who would have

  1715. thought of a

  1716. God who takes

  1717. on human flesh?

  1718. Who would have

  1719. thought of a

  1720. crucified king?

  1721. But it was

  1722. God's pleasure to

  1723. confound the

  1724. wisdom of the

  1725. world, the

  1726. shallow and

  1727. empty wisdom of

  1728. this world in

  1729. order to reveal

  1730. the depth and

  1731. fullness of

  1732. his divine

  1733. wisdom.

  1734. Corinthians

  1735. chapter 1

  1736. verses 18 to

  1737. 31 say this,

  1738. For the word

  1739. of the cross is

  1740. folly to those

  1741. who are perishing,

  1742. but to us who

  1743. are being saved

  1744. it is the power

  1745. of God.

  1746. For it is

  1747. written, I will

  1748. destroy the

  1749. wisdom of the

  1750. wise and the

  1751. discernment of

  1752. the discerning I

  1753. will thwart.

  1754. For consider your

  1755. calling, brothers.

  1756. Not many of you

  1757. were wise according

  1758. to worldly

  1759. standards.

  1760. Not many were

  1761. powerful.

  1762. Not many were

  1763. of noble birth.

  1764. But God chose

  1765. what is foolish

  1766. in the world

  1767. to shame the

  1768. wise.

  1769. God chose what

  1770. is weak in the

  1771. world to shame

  1772. the strong.

  1773. God chose what

  1774. is low and

  1775. despised in the

  1776. world, even

  1777. things that are

  1778. not to bring to

  1779. nothing things

  1780. that are, so

  1781. that no human

  1782. being might boast

  1783. in the presence of

  1784. God.

  1785. And because of

  1786. him, you are in

  1787. Christ Jesus who

  1788. became to us

  1789. wisdom from

  1790. God, righteousness

  1791. and sanctification

  1792. and redemption, so

  1793. that as it is

  1794. written, let the

  1795. one who boasts

  1796. boast in the

  1797. Lord.

  1798. Thanks be to

  1799. God.

  1800. Are you

  1801. discouraged that

  1802. you are weak and

  1803. foolish?

  1804. foolish?

  1805. Do you hesitate

  1806. to come to the

  1807. banquet of Jesus

  1808. in your filthy

  1809. sin-ridden rags?

  1810. Remember, woman

  1811. wisdom, she calls

  1812. out to the simple

  1813. and addresses those

  1814. who lack sense.

  1815. She invites us to

  1816. come eat hover

  1817. bread, drink of the

  1818. wine she has mixed.

  1819. Wisdom calls out

  1820. from the highest of

  1821. places to the

  1822. lowest of sinners.

  1823. sinners.

  1824. Consider what God

  1825. says in Isaiah 57

    Isaiah 57:15

  1826. verse 15.

  1827. I dwell in the

  1828. high and holy

  1829. place and also

1830. with him who is of

  1831. a contrite and

  1832. lowly spirit.

  1833. To revive the

  1834. spirit of the

  1835. lowly and to

  1836. revive the heart

  1837. of the contrite.

  1838. This verse tells

  1839. us that there are

  1840. two places in

  1841. the world where

  1842. the presence of

  1843. God is especially

  1844. manifest.

  1845. First is the

  1846. high and holy

  1847. place, God's

  1848. dwelling place, a

  1849. heavenly place.

  1850. Second is within

  1851. the heart of the

  1852. contrite and

  1853. lowly.

  1854. That's where

  1855. God dwells.

  1856. The admission

  1857. of your lowliness,

  1858. the admission of

  1859. your unworthiness,

  1860. your weakness,

  1861. your sinfulness,

  1862. forgiveness is

  1863. not a hindrance

  1864. to coming into

  1865. the banquet of

  1866. the kingdom of

  1867. God.

  1868. It is a

  1869. prerequisite for

  1870. entry into the

  1871. banquet of the

  1872. kingdom of God

  1873. because only those

  1874. who humble

  1875. themselves and

  1876. heed the call of

  1877. wisdom can

  1878. feast at her

  1879. life-giving

  1880. banquet.

  1881. Let me close

  1882. by reading the

  1883. first verse of

  1884. an old hymn,

  1885. Come,

  1886. ye sinners.

  1887. sinners.

  1888. Come,

  1889. ye sinners,

  1890. poor and

  1891. needy,

  1892. weak and

  1893. wounded,

  1894. sick and

  1895. sore.

  1896. Jesus ready

  1897. stands to

  1898. save you,

  1899. full of

  1900. pity,

  1901. love,

  1902. and power.

  1903. Amen.

  1904. Amen.

  1905. Amen.
