  1. Let's pray.

  2. Let's pray.

  3. Heavenly Father,

  4. we acknowledge this morning as we come,

  5. as we come to worship you,

  6. that there is no wisdom that is sufficient for us,

  7. for our time,

  8. than your wisdom.

  9. And so, Father, we do not come

  10. to a roundtable discussion.

  11. We do not come to a panel of experts.

  12. God, we come to the reading and preaching of your word.

  13. We look to you, Father.

  14. Teach us.

  15. Humble us.

  16. We are waiting to hear from you,

  17. to be guided by your word,

  18. to be changed by your word.

  19. In Jesus' name we pray.

  20. Amen.

  21. Amen.

  22. Please turn with me to Proverbs chapter 10.

    Proverbs 10 chapter mention

  23. We are now entering the main body of the book of Proverbs.

  24. This is what the,

  25. this is the proverbial feast that the woman of wisdom,

  26. the woman, lady wisdom,

  27. has been inviting us to in chapters 8 to 9.

  28. Amen.

  29. Amen.

  30. Amen.

  31. Amen.

  32. Amen.

  33. Amen.

  34. Proverbs chapter 10,

    Proverbs 10:1–22

  35. verses 1 to 22.

  36. The Proverbs of Solomon.

  37. A wise son makes a glad father,

  38. but a foolish son is a sorrow to his mother.

  39. Treasures gained by wickedness do not profit,

  40. but righteousness delivers from death.

  41. The Lord does not let the righteous go hungry,

  42. but he thwarts the craving of the wicked.

  43. A slack hand causes poverty,

  44. but the hand of the diligent makes rich.

  45. He who gathers in summer is a prudent son,

  46. but he who sleeps in harvest is a son who brings shame.

  47. Blessings are on the head of the righteous,

  48. but the mouth of the wicked conceals violence.

  49. The memory of the righteous is a blessing,

  50. but the name of the wicked will rot.

  51. The wise of heart will receive commandments,

  52. but a babbling fool will come to ruin.

  53. Whoever walks in integrity walks securely,

  54. but he who makes his ways crooked will be found out.

  55. Whoever winks the eye causes trouble,

  56. and a babbling fool will come to ruin.

  57. The mouth of the righteous is a fountain of life,

  58. but the mouth of the wicked conceals violence.

  59. Hatred stirs up strife,

  60. but love covers all offenses.

  61. On the lips of him who has understanding,

  62. wisdom is found,

  63. but a rod is for the back of him who lacks sense.

  64. The wise lay up knowledge,

  65. but the mouth of a fool brings ruin near.

  66. A rich man's wealth is his strong city.

  67. The poverty of the poor is their ruin.

  68. The wage of the righteous leads to life.

  69. The gain of the wicked to sin.

  70. Whoever heeds instruction is on the path to life,

  71. but he who rejects reproof leads others astray.

  72. The one who conceals hatred has lying lips,

  73. and whoever utters slander is a fool.

  74. When words are many,

  75. transgression is not lacking,

  76. but whoever restrains his lips is prudent.

  77. The tongue of the righteous is choice silver.

  78. The heart of the wicked is of little worth.

  79. The lips of the righteous feed many,

  80. but fools die for lack of sense.

  81. The blessing of the Lord makes rich,

  82. and he adds no sorrow with it.

  83. This is God's holy and authoritative word.

  84. The first verse of this chapter begins by saying that these are the Proverbs of Solomon.

  85. Solomon, as I mentioned in my first sermon in the book of Proverbs,

  86. to introduce the book,

  87. is a compilation of wisdom collections from various authors.

  88. Solomon is the principal author,

  89. and this is a section that's dedicated to him.

  90. In this first section of the Solomonic Proverbs,

    Proverbs 10:1

  91. chapter 10, verse 1, to chapter 22, verse 16,

  92. there's a total of 375 verses,

  93. and the Jews practiced kind of numerology in a way,

  94. like they would put a numerical value on each Hebrew letters of the alphabet.

  95. And if you add up the numerical value of the name Solomon,

  96. it's 375.

  97. So this is his mark on this collection,

  98. saying this is my wisdom he's trying to impart to us.

  99. And the whole collection is dedicated to helping us to live with the fear of the Lord.

  100. And the first collection can be divided into two general subsections.

  101. Chapter 10, verse 1, to chapter 15, verse 29,

  102. speaks of living righteously before the just Lord,

  103. before the justice of the Lord.

  104. And then chapter 15, verse 30, to chapter 22, verse 16,

  105. is about living humbly before the sovereign Lord.

  106. It's about humility before the sovereignty of God.

  107. And so this first section,

  108. which is broadly about living righteously before the just Lord,

  109. is made up of a series of contrasts between the righteous and the wicked.

  110. And it seeks to motivate us to live righteously

  111. by keeping the justice of God in view.

  112. And considering this common overarching theme,

  113. these five chapters really should be preached together.

  114. But that would make for a very long sermon,

  115. which I hear is not advisable, especially over Zoom.

  116. So for many days, I debated in my mind how to preach this.

  117. And we could preach it topically,

  118. meaning just pulling all these,

  119. lifting various verses from different contexts

  120. and then compiling them together to fit a topic.

  121. Or we could preach it just kind of chronologically

  122. as we've been doing, chapter by chapter,

  123. in which case you get the benefit of the context of each verse.

  124. And what we're going to try to do is to attempt a hybrid

  125. where we will cover it chapter by chapter,

  126. but we'll bring in other verses that are related to it

  127. so that it gets both its immediate context

  128. and the nuances of the entire book of Proverbs

  129. on a given topic.

  130. So today we're looking at chapter 10, verses 1 to 22,

  131. which contrasts the prosperity of the worker

  132. versus the poverty of the talker.

  133. Next week, we'll look at chapter 10, verse 23,

  134. to chapter 12, 28,

  135. which contrasts the permanence of the upright

  136. versus the impermanence of the crooked,

  137. particularly salient topic.

  138. And keep in mind that chapter 10 to 15,

  139. all of it is a series of contrasts

  140. between the righteous and the wicked.

  141. And what we're supposed to take from it

  142. is that even though the wicked prosper

  143. and injustices prevail in this world,

  144. this is a painfully relevant reality in our present world,

  145. but we ought to live nonetheless righteously

  146. knowing that the Lord is just.

  147. He will ultimately repay everyone

  148. according to their word and deed.

  149. And the main theme of today's passage

  150. is that those who wish to see the prosperity of the Lord

  151. should work diligently and speak sparingly.

  152. And so first, it tells us that the diligent

  153. will get rich in verses 1 to 5.

  154. And then it tells us that the babbler will meet ruin

  155. in verses 6 to 14.

  156. And then it tells us in verses 15 to 22

  157. to store up wealth and words.

  158. So let's look at verses 1 to 5 first,

  159. which tells us that the diligent will get rich.

  160. Though not in a naive, unrealistic way.

  161. So let's look at what it actually says.

  162. Subunit begins in verse 1,

  163. ends in verse 5.

  164. And then verse 2 to 3

  165. speak of the connection between wealth and ethics

  166. in a complementary way.

  167. Treasures gained by wickedness do not profit,

  168. but righteousness delivers from death.

  169. The Lord does not let the righteous go hungry,

  170. but He thwarts the craving of the wicked.

  171. So on the one hand,

  172. some people do gain treasures by wickedness.

  173. Verse 2 concedes that much.

  174. However, Solomon insists that such treasures

  175. do not profit.

  176. Obviously, treasures are by definition profitable.

  177. So he's not speaking here of material, temporal profit,

  178. but of eternal, spiritual profit.

  179. You might prosper by wickedness

  180. during your short life here on earth,

  181. but treasures so gained will be useless

  182. on the day of judgment.

  183. But righteousness delivers from death.

  184. This is paralleled by Proverbs chapter 11, verse 4,

    Proverbs 11:4

  185. which is,

  186. Do not profit in the day of wrath,

  187. but righteousness delivers from death.

  188. Only righteousness will deliver

  189. from the wrath of God on the day of judgment.

  190. It doesn't matter how much money you have,

  191. how much power you have.

  192. In the end,

  193. you will die like the rest of humanity,

  194. and the currency of this world will have no value.

  195. Only the righteous will be granted eternal life.

  196. On the other hand,

  197. while it is true that the wicked

  198. do sometimes prosper in this life,

  199. verse 3 says,

  200. The Lord does not let the righteous go hungry,

  201. but He thwarts the craving of the wicked.

  202. This is the general principle

  203. by which God has ordered the universe to work.

  204. God satisfied the hunger of the righteous,

  205. but thwarts the craving of the wicked.

  206. So verses 2 and 3,

  207. they complement each other

  208. to paint a fuller picture,

  209. more nuanced picture.

  210. The Lord opposes the cravings of the wicked in this world,

  211. but there are exceptions where the wicked prosper.

  212. Nonetheless,

  213. they will not avoid God's justice forever.

  214. They will meet their due on the day of judgment,

  215. and the righteous will prosper forever.

  216. Now, turn with me.

  217. I'm going to rely primarily on chapter 10 and chapter 13

  218. throughout this passage,

  219. so keep your finger on chapter 10,

  220. but turn with me to chapter 13 for a moment.

  221. Verses 21 to 25.

  222. We'll linger here for a little while.

  223. We see here clearly that

  224. Proverbs does not teach that the righteous

  225. will never in any circumstances go hungry,

  226. and it explains why.

  227. Because verse 2,

  228. as verse 2 of chapter 10 conceded,

  229. the wicked do prosper sometimes,

  230. even at the expense of the righteous.

  231. But chapter 13 fills out the picture some more.

  232. 21 to 25.

  233. It says,

  234. Disaster pursues sinners,

  235. but the righteous are rewarded with good.

  236. A good man leaves an inheritance

  237. to his children's children,

  238. but the sinner's wealth is laid up for the righteous.

  239. The fallow ground of the poor

  240. would yield much food,

  241. but it is swept away through injustice.

  242. Whoever spares the rod hates his son,

  243. but he who loves him

  244. is diligent to discipline him.

  245. The righteous has enough

  246. to satisfy his appetite,

  247. but the belly of the wicked suffers want.

  248. First, there is the general assurance

  249. that the righteous will be rewarded

  250. and the sinners will be thwarted.

  251. Disaster pursues sinners.

  252. That's a hunting metaphor.

  253. Sinners might run free for a little while,

  254. but disaster hounds them,

  255. and eventually it will catch up with them

  256. no matter how long it takes.

  257. And the evil that they inflicted on others

  258. will boomerang back to them.

  259. In contrast,

  260. the righteous are rewarded with good.

  261. The good deeds of the righteous

  262. will return to them

  263. and do good to them in the end.

  264. And that's why verse 22 says,

  265. A good man leaves an inheritance

  266. to his children's children,

  267. but the sinner's wealth

  268. is laid up for the righteous.

  269. The good man is rewarded with good.

  270. In this case,

  271. the ability to pass on one's inheritance

  272. to his children and grandchildren.

  273. In contrast,

  274. the sinner,

  275. though he may have accumulated

  276. much wealth during his life,

  277. will be caught by the disaster

  278. that pursues sinners.

  279. There are, however,

  280. two things that stand in the way

  281. of passing on righteous wealth.

  282. First, verse 23 qualifies verse 21.

  283. The fallow ground of the poor

  284. would yield much food,

  285. but it is swept away through injustice.

  286. In Exodus chapter 23,

    Exodus 23:10–11

  287. verses 10 to 11,

  288. the Israelites are commanded,

  289. For six years you shall sow your land

  290. and gather in its yield,

  291. but the seventh year you shall let it rest

  292. and lie fallow,

  293. that the poor of your people may eat,

  294. and what they leave,

  295. the beasts of the field may eat.

  296. You shall do likewise with your vineyard

  297. and with your olive orchard.

  298. So they were supposed to let the land rest fallow,

  299. fallow, uncultivated,

  300. on the seventh year,

  301. so that,

  302. and then they were not to harvest that year,

  303. so that the natural produce of the land

  304. in that seventh year

  305. would all go to the poor of that land,

  306. and they would have to eat to their fill

  307. and even save some for the future.

  308. And Proverbs 13, 23 says

  309. that the fallow ground of the poor

  310. would otherwise yield much food,

  311. but unfortunately,

  312. it is swept away through injustice.

  313. People don't leave the land fallow.

  314. As we see in Israel's history

  315. throughout the Old Testament,

  316. they don't follow this command well,

  317. and so the poor are not fed,

  318. and they go hungry,

  319. even the righteous poor

  320. who deserve to eat.

  321. Second, verse 24 qualifies verse 22.

  322. So verse 23 qualifies 21,

  323. verse 24 qualifies 22.

  324. Whoever spares the rod hates his son,

  325. but he who loves him

  326. is diligent to discipline him.

  327. This is where we get the expression

  328. spare the rod and spoil the child.

  329. The Bible,

  330. in contrast to the prevailing wisdom

  331. of our culture,

  332. does not believe

  333. that children are

  334. kind of innocent angels

  335. that society then subsequently

  336. corrupts and ruins.

  337. Proverbs 22, 15 says

  338. that folly is bound up

  339. in the heart of a child,

  340. but the rod of discipline

  341. drives it far from him.

  342. We'll address parenting

  343. and corporal punishment

  344. at greater length

  345. when we get to chapter 22,

  346. but for now,

  347. it suffices to say

  348. that some form of discipline

  349. for our children is necessary.

  350. Children are not born innocent angels.

  351. Children are born misguided,

  352. and therefore,

  353. they need course correction.

  354. That's what the Bible teaches us.

  355. Not disciplining our children

  356. is in fact unloving,

  357. and the failure of discipline

  358. is what threatens

  359. the promise of verse 22

  360. that a good man

  361. leaves an inheritance

  362. to his children's children.

  363. An undisciplined child

  364. will grow up

  365. to squander all of his inheritance.

  366. Nevertheless,

  367. the general truth still holds,

  368. and it says in chapter 13,

  369. verse 25,

  370. the righteous has enough

  371. to satisfy his appetite,

  372. but the belly of the wicked

  373. suffers want.

  374. Now, that brings us back

  375. to chapter 10.

  376. The fact that the Lord

  377. does not let the righteous

  378. go hungry,

  379. as it says in verse 3.

  380. But that doesn't mean

  381. that the righteous

  382. don't have to do any work,

  383. or that they could just

  384. wait passively for God

  385. to put food on their tables.

  386. God's provision

  387. does not make man's work

  388. unnecessary.

  389. Verses 4 to 5

  390. make that clear.

  391. It says,

  392. A slack hand

  393. causes poverty,

  394. but the hand of the diligent

  395. makes rich.

  396. He who gathers in summer

  397. is a prudent son,

  398. but he who sleeps in harvest

  399. is a son who brings shame.

  400. The reason why

  401. the righteous prosper

  402. is because the righteous

  403. are diligent.

  404. God has ordained

  405. that the righteous

  406. will prosper

  407. by their hard work.

  408. Notice the contrast

  409. between the slack hand

  410. and the diligent hand

  411. and between gathering

  412. and sleeping.

  413. Divine provision

  414. usually comes

  415. through human work.

  416. This is why

  417. it's appropriate for us

  418. to thank God

  419. for the jobs we work

  420. and the income we earn

  421. because it's ultimately

  422. all from Him.

  423. And turn with me

  424. one more time

  425. back to chapter 13.

  426. I'm going to do that

  427. two more times.

  428. This is the second time.

  429. I'm covering most

  430. of chapter 13

  431. and chapter 10

  432. this morning.

  433. Chapter 13

  434. this time to verses

  435. 7 to 11.

  436. This also emphasizes

  437. the value of hard work

  438. and frugal living.

  439. And note well

  440. that frugal living

  441. is not the same thing

  442. as stingy living

  443. as the other proverbs

  444. later in this series

  445. will make clear.

  446. First,

  447. verses 7 to 8

  448. give us insight

  449. to the behavior

  450. of the rich and poor people.

  451. It says,

  452. One pretends to be rich

  453. yet has nothing.

  454. Another pretends

  455. to be poor

  456. yet has great wealth.

  457. The ransom

  458. of a man's life

  459. is his wealth

  460. but a poor man

  461. hears no threat.

  462. I remember hearing

  463. the story

  464. of a prominent

  465. Christian speaker

  466. who was traveling

  467. and he was getting

  468. picked up at the airport.

  469. The person

  470. that was supposed

  471. to pick him up

  472. was the son

  473. of this really,

  474. really,

  475. really wealthy

  476. Christian businessman

  477. who had donated

  478. millions of dollars

  479. to various

  480. Christian charities

  481. that this man,

  482. the speaker,

  483. serves on the board of.

  484. And so his son

  485. is picking him up

  486. and he's waiting

  487. at the airport

  488. and to his surprise,

  489. this son pulls up

  490. in this junk of a car.

  491. And he couldn't

  492. suppress his curiosity

  493. so on his ride back

  494. he asked him,

  495. So hey,

  496. I mean,

  497. I know

  498. how well off

  499. you guys are

  500. so I'm just wondering

  501. why you guys are

  502. driving a car like this.

  503. And the son told him,

  504. so I actually complained

  505. about that to my father

  506. one time

  507. and he told me,

  508. Son,

  509. we have enough money

  510. to line up

  511. our entire driveway

  512. with dozens of Humvees

  513. but we don't

  514. because we don't need

  515. to flaunt our wealth

  516. just because we are wealthy

  517. and our money

  518. ultimately belongs

  519. to the Lord

  520. and we want to use it

  521. for His glory

  522. and not our vanity.

  523. Plus our car

  524. still drives smoothly

  525. and we don't need

  526. to replace it.

  527. Now this story

  528. captures the spirit

  529. of verse 7.

  530. One pretends to be rich

  531. yet has nothing.

  532. Another pretends

  533. to be poor

  534. yet has great wealth.

  535. The rich may live

  536. frugally

  537. well below his means

  538. but the poor

  539. may live lavishly

  540. well beyond his means

  541. perhaps out of a desire

  542. to be perceived

  543. as wealthy

  544. and important

  545. and powerful.

  546. But appearances,

  547. this proverb teaches us,

  548. ultimately,

  549. doesn't matter.

  550. Appearance doesn't matter.

  551. In a crisis

  552. when one's life

  553. is threatened,

  554. the rich may use

  555. his wealth

  556. as the ransom

  557. to save himself

  558. but a poor man

  559. hears no threat

  560. says in verse 9.

  561. The poor man

  562. has nothing to lose

  563. and will take his life

  564. into his own hands.

  565. He will be unable

  566. to save himself.

  567. And as a result,

  568. it says,

  569. the light of the righteous

  570. rejoices

  571. but the lamp

  572. of the wicked

  573. will be put out.

  574. Putting out

  575. someone's light

  576. refers to

  577. killing them,

  578. to taking the light

  579. out of somebody.

  580. And the righteous

  581. rich will rejoice

  582. which literally means

  583. to shine

  584. or beam.

  585. The righteous rich

  586. will beam with life

  587. but the wicked poor

  588. will be extinguished.

  589. This refers

  590. to their ultimate doom.

  591. And how can you

  592. avoid this fate?

  593. Verses 10 to 11

  594. of chapter 13

  595. tell us,

  596. By insolence

  597. comes nothing

  598. but strife

  599. but with those

  600. who take advice

  601. is wisdom.

  602. Wealth gained

  603. hastily

  604. will dwindle

  605. but whoever

  606. gathers little

  607. by little

  608. will increase it.

  609. You avoid

  610. the fate

  611. of the wicked

  612. poor

  613. by humbling

  614. yourself

  615. and heeding

  616. the wisdom

  617. of Proverbs.

  618. And according

  619. to Proverbs,

  620. those who wish

  621. to see the prosperity

  622. of the Lord

  623. should work

  624. diligently.

  625. Wealth gained

  626. hastily

  627. will dwindle

  628. but whoever

  629. gathers little

  630. by little

  631. will increase it.

  632. The word hastily

  633. literally means

  634. by vapor

  635. or by air.

  636. It refers to

  637. all empty

  638. and fanciful

  639. and insubstantial

  640. means

  641. of gaining wealth.

  642. So that means

  643. don't get fooled

  644. by the

  645. get rich

  646. quick schemes.

  647. That means

  648. don't be lured

  649. into gambling.

  650. It means

  651. don't throw away

  652. your money

  653. trying to win

  654. the lottery.

  655. It means

  656. don't try

  657. to scam

  658. people

  659. and to get

  660. rich quickly.

  661. Don't buy

  662. into the

  663. promise

  664. of easy

  665. money.

  666. Gaining

  667. wealth

  668. hastily

  669. involves

  670. the idolization

  671. of wealth

  672. and the

  673. love of money.

  674. Wealth

  675. at all

  676. costs

  677. and it

  678. will bring

  679. your ruin.

  680. It will be

  681. your undoing.

  682. The biblical

  683. way to gain

  684. wealth,

  685. the wise

  686. way to gain

  687. wealth

  688. is little

  689. by little.

  690. That literally

  691. means by

  692. hand.

  693. Something that

  694. you do

  695. by hand

  696. takes time.

  697. You're

  698. supposed to

  699. gain wealth

  700. gradually

  701. and diligently.

  702. Lasting wealth

  703. is gained

  704. incrementally

  705. through diligent

  706. work,

  707. not explosively

  708. through a

  709. stroke of

  710. luck

  711. or crime.

  712. And now

  713. returning to

  714. chapter 10

  715. verse 4.

  716. A slack

  717. hand

  718. causes

  719. poverty

  720. but the

  721. hand

  722. of the

  723. diligent

  724. makes

  725. rich.

  726. Now

  727. having

  728. taught us

  729. that the

  730. diligent

  731. will get

  732. rich

  733. in verses

  734. 1-5,

  735. Solomon

  736. now

  737. contrasts

  738. this

  739. with

  740. verses

  741. 6-14

  742. where he

  743. tells us

  744. that the

  745. babbler

  746. will meet

  747. ruin.

  748. Now

  749. verses

  750. 6-14

  751. are stitched

  752. together

  753. by various

  754. repeated

  755. themes

  756. and phrases.

  757. There's a lot

  758. of reference

  759. to the

  760. body parts

  761. which is

  762. an imagery

  763. that's used

  764. to contrast

  765. the righteous

  766. and the

  767. wicked.

  768. Verses

  769. 6-7

  770. say this

  771. that blessings

  772. are on the

  773. head of the

  774. righteous

  775. but the

  776. mouth of

  777. the wicked

  778. conceals

  779. violence.

  780. The memory

  781. of the

  782. righteous

  783. is a

  784. blessing

  785. but the

  786. name of

  787. the wicked

  788. will rot.

  789. Our actions

  790. in this

  791. life

  792. though you

  793. might escape

  794. punishment

  795. in this

  796. life

  797. our actions

  798. have

  799. consequences.

  800. It's

  801. idiomatic in

  802. Hebrew to

  803. say that

  804. blessing

  805. comes upon

  806. someone's

  807. head.

  808. That's

  809. why when

  810. a person

  811. blesses

  812. someone

  813. in the

  814. Bible

  815. they lay

  816. their

  817. hands

  818. on

  819. their

  820. head.

  821. And

  822. the

  823. righteous

  824. during

  825. their

  826. lives

  827. was

  828. blessed

  829. and

  830. was

  831. a

  832. blessing

  833. to

  834. others.

  835. And

  836. so in

  837. their

  838. death

  839. it says

  840. their

  841. memory

  842. in

  843. people's

  844. heads

  845. will be

  846. a

  847. blessing.

  848. In

  849. contrast

  850. the

  851. wicked

  852. during

  853. their

  854. lives

  855. concealed

  856. violence

  857. wreaking

  858. havoc

  859. with

  860. their

  861. deceptive

  862. mouth.

  863. So in

  864. their

  865. death

  866. their

  867. name

  868. will

  869. never

  870. be

  871. invoked

  872. on

  873. people's

  874. mouths.

  875. Rather

  876. they will

  877. be

  878. forgotten

  879. and their

  880. names

  881. will rot

  882. like

  883. their

  884. bodies

  885. in the

  886. grave.

  887. It's

  888. typical

  889. in

  890. Hebrew

  891. culture

  892. to

  893. invoke

  894. the

  895. name

  896. of

  897. a

  898. godly

  899. person

  900. in

  901. a

  902. blessed

  903. individual

  904. in

  905. order

  906. to

  907. bless

  908. others.

  909. So for

  910. example

  911. in

  912. Ruth

    Ruth 4:11

  913. chapter

  914. 4

  915. verse

  916. 11

  917. when

  918. Boaz

  919. makes

  920. a

  921. pledge

  922. to

  923. marry

  924. Ruth

  925. the

  926. elders

  927. say

  928. this

  929. we

  930. are

  931. witnesses

  932. may

  933. the

  934. Lord

  935. make

  936. the

  937. woman

  938. who

  939. is

  940. coming

  941. into

  942. your

  943. house

  944. like

  945. Rachel

  946. and

  947. Leah

  948. who

  949. together

  950. built

  951. up

  952. the

  953. house

  954. of

  955. Israel

  956. they're

  957. blessing

  958. Ruth

  959. Now

  960. verse

  961. 8

  962. says

  963. that

  964. wise

  965. of

  966. heart

  967. will

  968. come

  969. to

  970. ruin

  971. and

  972. the

  973. second

  974. half

  975. of

  976. this

  977. verse

  978. is

  979. matched

  980. by

  981. verse

  982. 10

  983. whoever

  984. wings

  985. the

  986. eye

  987. causes

  988. trouble

  989. and

  990. a

  991. babbling

  992. fool

  993. will

  994. come

  995. to

  996. ruin

  997. now

  998. there's

  999. the

  1000. contrast

  1001. between

  1002. the

  1003. wise

  1004. of

  1005. heart

  1006. and

  1007. the

  1008. fool

  1009. who

  1010. is

  1011. wise

  1012. in

  1013. their

  1014. own

  1015. eyes

  1016. in

  1017. chapter

  1018. 3

  1019. verse

  1020. 7

  1021. so

  1022. the

  1023. wise

  1024. of

  1025. heart

  1026. are

  1027. humble

  1028. and

  1029. receptive

  1030. to

  1031. instruction

  1032. and

  1033. teaching

  1034. and

  1035. correction

  1036. they

  1037. will

  1038. receive

  1039. commandments

  1040. in

  1041. contrast

  1042. the

  1043. fool

  1044. who

  1045. is

  1046. wise

  1047. in

  1048. his

  1049. own

  1050. eyes

  1051. he

  1052. wings

  1053. the

  1054. eye

  1055. causes

  1056. trouble

  1057. they

  1058. are

  1059. wise

  1060. in

  1061. their

  1062. own

  1063. eyes

  1064. so

  1065. they

  1066. use

  1067. their

  1068. wings

  1069. with

  1070. their

  1071. knowing

  1072. wings

  1073. in

  1074. order

  1075. to

  1076. deceive

  1077. and

  1078. but

  1079. in

  1080. the

  1081. end

  1082. the

  1083. result

  1084. is

  1085. the

  1086. same

  1087. a

  1088. babbling

  1089. fool

  1090. will

  1091. come

  1092. to

  1093. ruin

  1094. babbling

  1095. fool

  1096. is

  1097. literally

  1098. foolish

  1099. of

  1100. lip

  1101. a

  1102. folly

  1103. is

  1104. often

  1105. discovered

  1106. first

  1107. on a

  1108. person's

  1109. lips

  1110. he

  1111. is

  1112. quick

  1113. to

  1114. speak

  1115. he

  1116. airs

  1117. his

  1118. opinions

  1119. widely

  1120. because

  1121. he

  1122. thinks

  1123. very

  1124. highly

  1125. of

  1126. his

  1127. own

  1128. opinions

  1129. and

  1130. believes

  1131. that

  1132. everyone

  1133. should

  1134. benefit

  1135. by

  1136. hearing

  1137. from

  1138. him

  1139. verse

  1140. 11

  1141. once

  1142. again

  1143. returns

  1144. to

  1145. the

  1146. image

  1147. of

  1148. the

  1149. mouth

  1150. of

  1151. the

  1152. righteous

  1153. is

  1154. a

  1155. fountain

  1156. of

  1157. life

  1158. but

  1159. the

  1160. mouth

  1161. of

  1162. the

  1163. wicked

  1164. conceals

  1165. violence

  1166. now

  1167. everyone

  1168. needs

  1169. water

  1170. to

  1171. live

  1172. right

  1173. but

  1174. this

  1175. need

  1176. was

  1177. especially

  1178. felt

  1179. keenly

  1180. felt

  1181. in

  1182. the

  1183. arid

  1184. lands

  1185. of

  1186. the

  1187. ancient

  1188. near

  1189. east

  1190. where

  1191. there

  1192. wasn't

  1193. much

  1194. water

  1195. and

  1196. so

  1197. communities

  1198. literally

  1199. formed

  1200. out of

  1201. places

  1202. where

  1203. there

  1204. were

  1205. wells

  1206. fountains

  1207. of

  1208. water

  1209. which

  1210. were

  1211. literally

  1212. fountains

  1213. of

  1214. life

  1215. and

  1216. in

  1217. similar

  1218. to

  1219. that

  1220. the

  1221. words

  1222. of

  1223. the

  1224. wise

  1225. the

  1226. mouth

  1227. of

  1228. the

  1229. righteous

  1230. bring

  1231. people

  1232. together

  1233. by

  1234. his

  1235. teaching

  1236. and

  1237. infuse

  1238. the

  1239. community

  1240. with

  1241. spiritual

  1242. and

  1243. moral

  1244. vitality

  1245. in

  1246. contrast

  1247. the

  1248. mouth

  1249. of

  1250. the

  1251. wicked

  1252. conceals

  1253. violence

  1254. their

  1255. words

  1256. are

  1257. deceptive

  1258. divisive

  1259. and

  1260. destructive

  1261. they

  1262. bring

  1263. death

  1264. to

  1265. their

  1266. communities

  1267. compare

  1268. this

  1269. to

  1270. verse

  1271. 12

  1272. which

  1273. is

  1274. a

  1275. succinct

  1276. summary

  1277. of

  1278. what

  1279. we

  1280. covered

  1281. so far

  1282. hatred

  1283. stirs

  1284. up

  1285. strife

  1286. but

  1287. love

  1288. covers

  1289. all

  1290. offenses

  1291. the

  1292. word

  1293. cover

  1294. here

  1295. is

  1296. the

  1297. same

  1298. Hebrew

  1299. word

  1300. that's

  1301. translated

  1302. as

  1303. conceal

  1304. in

  1305. verses

  1306. 6

  1307. and

  1308. 11

  1309. to

  1310. say

  1311. that

  1312. the

  1313. wicked

  1314. conceals

  1315. violence

  1316. and

  1317. it's

  1318. also

  1319. the

  1320. same

  1321. word

  1322. that's

  1323. translated

  1324. in

  1325. verse

  1326. 18

  1327. as

  1328. the

  1329. one

  1330. who

  1331. conceals

  1332. hatred

  1333. has

  1334. lying

  1335. lips

  1336. the

  1337. wicked

  1338. conceal

  1339. the

  1340. wicked

  1341. cover

  1342. up

  1343. their

  1344. malicious

  1345. intent

  1346. through

  1347. deceit

  1348. but

  1349. the

  1350. righteous

  1351. cover

  1352. the

  1353. offenses

  1354. of

  1355. others

  1356. in

  1357. love

  1358. the

  1359. wicked

  1360. cover

  1361. their

  1362. own

  1363. offense

  1364. the

  1365. righteous

  1366. cover

  1367. the

  1368. others

  1369. offense

  1370. while

  1371. the

  1372. hatred

  1373. of

  1374. the

  1375. wicked

  1376. stirs

  1377. up

  1378. strife

  1379. the

  1380. love

  1381. of

  1382. the

  2196. that's

  2197. what

  2198. ultimately

  2199. leads

  2200. to

  2201. life

  2202. and

  2203. then

  2204. starting

  2205. in

  2206. verse

  2207. 18

  2208. Solomon

  2209. again

  2210. returns

  2211. to

  2212. the

  2213. importance

  2214. of

  2215. godly

  2216. speech

  2217. in

  2218. particular

  2219. the

  2227. in

  2228. verses

  2229. 19

  2230. to

  2231. 20

  2232. when

  2233. words

  2235. many

  2236. transgression

  2237. is

  2240. but

  2241. whoever

  2242. restrains

  2243. his lips

  2244. is

  2245. prudent

  2246. the

  2248. of

  2249. the

  2254. the

  2256. of

  2257. the

  2259. is

  2260. of

  2261. little

  2264. how

  2265. he

  2266. uses

  2267. the

  2268. metaphors

  2269. of

  2270. wealth

  2271. in

  2272. connection

  2273. with

  2274. speech

  2275. as

  2276. verse

  2277. 15

  2278. said

  2279. the

  2280. wise

  2281. store

  2282. up

  2283. knowledge

  2284. they

  2285. lay

  2286. up

  2287. knowledge

  2288. like

  2289. the

  2290. rich

  2291. man

  2292. who

  2293. stores

  2294. up

  2295. wealth

  2296. but

  2297. both

  2298. wealth

  2299. and

  2300. words

  2301. are

  2302. something

  2303. that

  2304. should

  2305. be

  2306. saved

  2307. not

  2308. something

  2309. we

  2310. shouldn't

  2311. be

  2312. spend

  2313. thrift

  2314. or

  2315. wasteful

  2316. with

  2317. similarly

  2318. the

  2319. tongue

  2320. of

  2321. the

  2322. righteous

  2323. is

  2324. choice

  2325. silver

  2326. the

  2327. heart

  2328. of

  2329. the

  2330. wicked

  2331. is

  2332. of

  2333. little

  2334. worth

  2335. choice

  2336. silver

  2337. is

  2338. referring

  2339. to

  2340. precious

  2341. silver

  2342. costly

  2343. silver

  2344. that's

  2345. valuable

  2346. precisely

  2347. because

  2348. it is

  2349. rare

  2350. in

  2351. contrast

  2352. the

  2353. heart

  2354. of

  2355. the

  2356. wicked

  2357. is

  2358. of

  2359. little

  2360. worth

  2361. it's

  2362. not

  2363. worth

  2364. much

  2365. it's

  2366. cheap

  2367. his

  2369. heart

  2370. gives

  2371. voice

  2372. to

  2373. many

  2374. words

  2375. and

  2376. transgression

  2377. therefore

  2378. is

  2379. not

  2380. lacking

  2381. in

  2382. other

  2383. words

  2384. when

  2385. there

  2386. are

  2387. many

  2388. words

  2389. there

  2390. is

  2391. a

  2394. wisdom

  2395. when

  2396. words

  2397. are

  2398. few

  2399. there

  2400. is

  2401. much

  2402. wisdom

  2403. words

  2404. are

  2405. like

  2406. money

  2407. the

  2408. more

  2409. money

  2410. you

  2411. print

  2412. into

  2413. circulation

  2414. the

  2415. less

  2416. value

  2417. it

  2418. has

  2419. the

  2420. more

  2421. you

  2422. speak

  2423. the

  2424. less

  2425. value

  2426. it

  2427. has

  2428. the

  2429. less

  2430. weight

  2431. it

  2432. has

  2433. the

  2434. less

  2435. wisdom

  2436. it

  2437. has

  2438. when

  2439. there

  2440. are

  2441. many

  2442. words

  2443. there

  2444. are

  2445. often

  2446. premature

  2447. words

  2448. imprecise

  2449. words

  2450. and

  2451. partial

  2452. unfair

  2453. words

  2454. words

  2455. that are

  2456. out of

  2457. place

  2458. words

  2459. that are

  2460. out of

  2461. turn

  2462. but once

  2463. they leave

  2464. our mouths

  2465. you can't

  2466. get any

  2467. of it

  2468. back

  2469. so the

  2470. wise

  2471. for that

  2472. reason

  2473. restrain

  2474. their

  2475. tongue

  2476. the

  2477. wise

  2478. don't

  2479. have

  2480. a

  2481. hot

  2482. take

  2483. on

  2484. every

  2485. single

  2486. trending

  2487. issue

  2488. on

  2489. Twitter

  2490. just

  2491. as we

  2492. save up

  2493. money

  2494. we should

  2495. be

  2496. concerned

  2497. with

  2498. saving

  2499. our

  2500. words

  2501. it's

  2502. what

  2503. Solomon

  2504. is

  2505. trying

  2506. to

  2507. teach

  2508. us

  2509. honestly

  2510. this

  2511. is

  2512. one

  2513. of

  2514. the

  2515. most

  2516. dangerous

  2517. occupational

  2518. hazards

  2519. of being

  2520. a

  2521. pastor

  2522. because

  2523. he is

  2524. often

  2525. teaching

  2526. and

  2527. expected

  2528. to

  2529. speak

  2530. much

  2531. but

  2532. James

    James 3:1

  2533. chapter

  2534. 3

  2535. verse

  2536. 1

  2537. says

  2538. not

  2539. many

  2540. of

  2541. you

  2542. should

  2543. become

  2544. teachers

  2545. for

  2546. you

  2547. know

  2548. that

  2549. we

  2550. who

  2551. teach

  2552. will

  2553. be

  2554. judged

  2555. with

  2556. greater

  2557. strictness

  2558. I've

  2559. erred

  2560. many

  2561. times

  2562. erred

  2563. many

  2564. times

  2565. in my

  2566. speaking

  2567. even

  2568. this

  2569. past

  2570. week

  2571. I

  2572. had

  2573. a

  2574. conversation

  2575. with

  2576. some

  2577. people

  2578. and

  2579. then

  2580. felt

  2581. afterward

  2582. that

  2583. I

  2584. had

  2585. spoken

  2586. too

  2587. soon

  2588. and

  2589. too

  2590. much

  2591. it's

  2592. a

  2593. dangerous

  2594. thing

  2595. to

  2596. open

  2597. your

  2598. mouth

  2599. so

  2600. brothers

  2601. and

  2602. sisters

  2603. be

  2604. wary

  2605. of

  2606. many

  2607. words

  2608. there's

  2609. yet

  2610. another

  2611. more

  2612. pragmatic

  2613. way

  2614. in which

  2615. words

  2616. are

  2617. connected

  2618. with

  2619. wealth

  2620. in

  2621. Proverbs

    Proverbs 14:23

  2622. chapter

  2623. 14

  2624. verse

  2625. 23

  2626. and

  2627. 24

  2628. say

  2629. this

  2630. in

  2631. all

  2632. toil

  2633. there

  2634. is

  2635. profit

  2636. but

  2637. mere

  2638. talk

  2639. tends

  2640. only

  2641. to

  2642. poverty

  2643. the

  2644. crown

  2645. of the

  2646. wise

  2647. is

  2648. their

  2649. wealth

  2650. but

  2651. the

  2652. folly

  2653. of

  2654. fools

  2655. brings

  2656. folly

  2657. quite

  2658. simply

  2659. if

  2660. you're

  2661. busy

  2662. talking

  2663. you're

  2664. not

  2665. busy

  2666. working

  2667. if

  2668. you

  2669. don't

  2670. apply

  2671. yourself

  2672. with

  2673. working

  2674. with

  2675. your

  2676. hands

  2677. and

  2678. only

  2679. with

  2680. running

  2681. your

  2682. mouth

  2683. instead

  2684. of

  2685. reaping

  2686. wealth

  2687. you

  2688. will

  2689. reap

  2690. more

  2691. folly

  2692. that's

  2693. another

  2694. connection

  2695. between

  2696. wealth

  2697. and

  2698. words

  2699. and

  2700. then

  2701. now

  2702. turn

  2703. with

  2704. me

  2705. one

  2706. final

  2707. time

  2708. to

  2709. chapter

  2711. this

  2712. time

  2713. verses

  2714. 1

  2715. to

  2716. 6

  2717. which

  2718. also

  2719. illuminate

  2720. the connection

  2721. between

  2722. wealth

  2723. and

  2724. words

  2725. chapter

  2726. 13

  2727. verses

  2728. 1

  2729. to

  2730. 6

  2731. it

  2732. says

  2733. a wise

  2734. son

  2735. hears

  2736. his

  2737. father's

  2738. instruction

  2739. but

  2740. a

  2741. scoffer

  2742. does

  2743. not

  2744. listen

  2745. to

  2746. rebuke

  2747. from

  2748. the

  2749. fruit

  2750. of

  2751. his

  2752. mouth

  2753. a

  2754. man

  2755. eats

  2756. what

  2757. is

  2758. good

  2759. but

  2760. the

  2761. desire

  2762. of

  2763. the

  2764. treacherous

  2765. is

  2766. for

  2767. violence

  2768. whoever

  2769. guards

  2770. his

  2771. mouth

  2772. preserves

  2773. his

  2775. he

  2776. who

  2777. opens

  2778. wide

  2779. his

  2780. lips

  2781. comes

  2782. to

  2783. ruin

  2784. the

  2785. soul

  2786. of

  2787. the

  2788. sluggard

  2789. craves

  2790. and

  2791. gets

  2792. nothing

  2793. while

  2794. the

  2795. soul

  2796. of

  2797. the

  2798. diligent

  2799. is

  2800. richly

  2801. supplied

  2802. the

  2803. righteous

  2804. hates

  2805. falsehood

  2806. but

  2807. the

  2808. wicked

  2809. brings

  2810. shame

  2811. and

  2812. disgrace

  2813. righteousness

  2814. guards

  2815. him

  2816. whose

  2817. way

  2818. is

  2819. blameless

  2820. but

  2821. sin

  2822. overthrows

  2823. the

  2824. wicked

  2825. the

  2826. word

  2827. desire

  2828. in

  2829. verse

  2830. 2

  2831. the

  2832. word

  2833. life

  2834. in

  2835. verse

  2836. 3

  2837. and

  2838. the

  2839. word

  2840. soul

  2841. in

  2842. verse

  2843. 4

  2844. are

  2845. all

  2846. different

  2848. of

  2849. the

  2850. same

  2851. Hebrew

  2852. word

  2853. so

  2854. then

  2855. there's

  2856. a

  2857. parallel

  2858. between

  2859. the

  2860. desire

  2861. of

  2862. the

  2870. who

  2871. craves

  2872. and

  2873. gets

  2874. nothing

  2875. the

  2876. sluggard

  2877. and

  2880. they

  2881. open

  2882. wide

  2883. their

  2884. lips

  2885. that

  2886. has a

  2887. double

  2888. meaning

  2889. they

  2890. open

  2891. wide

  2892. their

  2893. lips

  2894. by

  2895. speaking

  2896. much

  2897. and

  2898. they

  2899. open

  2900. wide

  2901. their

  2902. mouths

  2903. to

  2904. be

  2905. satisfied

  2906. their

  2907. craving

  2908. for

  2909. violence

  2910. and

  2911. unearned

  2912. unjust

  2913. income

  2914. in

  2915. contrast

  2916. whoever

  2917. guards

  2918. his

  2920. preserves

  2921. his

  2922. life

  2923. or

  2924. preserves

  2925. his

  2927. appetite

  2928. and

  2929. that

  2930. too

  2931. is

  2932. a

  2934. play

  2935. he

  2941. his

  2942. lips

  2943. will

  2944. be

  2945. satisfied

  2946. with

  2947. rich

  2948. food

  2949. the

  2950. soul

  2951. of

  2952. the

  2953. diligent

  2954. is

  2955. richly

  2956. supplied

  2957. when

  2958. you

  2959. guard

  2960. your

  2961. mouth

  2962. as

  2963. verse

  2964. 3

  2965. says

  2966. righteousness

  2967. guards

  2968. you

  2969. as

  2970. verse

  2971. 6

  2972. says

  2973. now

  2974. this

  2975. doesn't

  2976. mean

  2977. that

  2978. we

  2979. should

  2980. never

  2981. speak

  2982. let's

  2983. return

  2984. to

  2985. chapter

  2986. 10

  2987. look

  2988. at

  2989. verse

  2990. 21

  2991. it

  2992. says

  2993. the
