  1. I'm going to skip around a little bit this morning because we already covered most of chapter 13 three weeks ago when we were going through Proverbs 11, I think.

  2. So I think we're going to start verse 12, chapter 13, go through verse 9, and then we're going to jump to chapter 14 and read verses 1 to 15.

  3. So I'll start in chapter 13, verses 12 to 19.

  4. Hope deferred makes the heart sick, but a desire fulfilled is a tree of life.

  5. Whoever despises the word brings destruction on himself, but he who reveres the commandment will be rewarded.

  6. The teaching of the wise is a fountain of life that one may turn away from the snares of death.

  7. Good sends wind's favor, but the way of the treacherous is their ruin.

  8. Every prudent man acts with knowledge, but a fool flaunts his folly.

  9. A wicked messenger falls into trouble, but a faithful envoy brings healing.

  10. Poverty and disgrace come to him who ignores instruction, but whoever heeds reproof is honor.

  11. A desire fulfilled is sweet to the soul, but to turn away from evil is an abomination to fools.

  12. Let's skip ahead a little bit to chapter 14, verses 1 to 15.

  13. The wisest of women builds her house, but folly with her own hands tears it down.

  14. Whoever walks in uprightness fears the Lord, but he who is devious in his ways despises him.

  15. By the mouth of a fool comes a rod for his back, but the lips of the wise will preserve them.

  16. Where there are no oxen, the manger is clean, but abundant crops come by the strength of the ox.

  17. A faithful witness does not lie, but a false witness breathes out lies.

  18. A scoffer seeks wisdom in vain, but knowledge is easy for a man of understanding.

  19. Leave the presence of a fool, for there you do not meet words of knowledge.

  20. The wisdom of the prudent is to discern his way, but the folly of fools is deceiving.

  21. Fools mock at the guilt offering, but the upright enjoy acceptance.

  22. The heart knows its own bitterness, and no stranger shares its joy.

  23. The house of the wicked will be destroyed, but the tent of the upright will flourish.

  24. There is a way that seems right to a man, but its end is the way to death.

  25. Even in laughter the heart may ache, and the end of joy may be grief.

  26. The backslider in heart will be filled with the fruit of his ways,

  27. and a good man will be filled with the fruit of his ways.

  28. The simple believes everything, but the prudent gives thought to his steps.

  29. This is God's holy and authoritative word.

  30. We have an oversized box of Cheerios at our house that we've been trying to finish for the last few months.

  31. It has a picture of a red heart-shaped bowl on the cover,

  32. and a caption that says,

  33. It can help lower cholesterol as part of a heart-healthy diet.

  34. But even though it's supposed to be a healthier alternative

  35. to virtually all the other sugary breakfast cereals,

  36. our family still hasn't managed to finish that one box over the last several months.

  37. And the reason for that is quite simple.

  38. It only has two grams of sugar.

  39. And if it had any less sugar, it will taste like you're eating the cardboard box itself.

  40. And that's because we want healthy hearts in theory,

  41. but not necessarily in practice.

  42. And this illustrates kind of the spiritual problems that we have all experienced,

  43. that the desires of our hearts are not aligned with the will of God.

  44. We don't desire the things that we should desire.

  45. We don't want the things that God wants.

  46. We don't have a strong enough appetite for godly, heavenly things.

  47. And so we need new hearts, realigned hearts.

  48. And this passage teaches us that only those who humbly receive God's word

  49. will have the desires of their hearts fulfilled.

  50. It speaks of the desires of the heart, chapter 13, verses 12 to 19.

  51. And it speaks of the deceptiveness of the heart, chapter 14, verses 1 to 15.

  52. And I also bring in chapter 15, verses 11 to 19 later,

  53. which I didn't read earlier, and talk about the delight of the heart.

  54. And since, as I mentioned, I already preached on Proverbs 13 three weeks ago,

  55. along with chapter 10,

  56. I'm not going to dive into those verses in detail this morning.

  57. But just to remind you of the context,

  58. chapter 13 teaches that the righteous gain lasting wealth

  59. by working diligently and saving gradually.

  60. And so chapter 13, verse 11 gives us a flavor of that.

  61. It says,

  62. Wealth gained hastily will dwindle,

  63. but whoever gathers little by little will increase it.

  64. Now, it's in that context we get the teaching of chapter 13, verses 12 to 19,

  65. which talks about the desire of the heart, desires of the heart.

  66. And verses 12 to 19 is a subunit of its own,

  67. and it's structured concentrically.

  68. First half is mirrored by the second half.

  69. So verse 12 is matched by verse 19,

  70. verse 13 by verse 18,

  71. verse 14 by verse 17, and so on.

  72. And it's helpful for interpreting when we look at those matching verses together.

  73. And so verse 12 and 19,

  74. they bracket this unit,

  75. and they both speak of how the desires of the righteous will be fulfilled.

  76. Verse 12 says,

  77. Hope deferred makes the heart sick,

  78. but a desire fulfilled is a tree of life.

  79. And similarly,

  80. verse 19 says,

  81. A desire fulfilled is sweet to the soul,

  82. but to turn away from evil is an abomination to fools.

  83. The wicked cannot resist the lure of get-rich-quick schemes,

  84. whether it's by cheating or stealing or gambling.

  85. But wealth, Proverbs teaches us,

  86. wealth that is gained hastily will dwindle.

  87. Only he who gathers little by little through hard work will increase it.

  88. And for this reason,

  89. they will not have the wicked who seek to gain quickly through unjust means,

  90. will not have their desire fulfilled.

  91. To the wise, however,

  92. who desire the things of God,

  93. the fulfillment of a righteous desire is sweet to their soul.

  94. But to the fool who does not desire the things of God,

  95. turning away from evil is an abomination to him.

  96. He says,

  97. So the wise,

  98. this is telling us,

  99. the wise have a taste,

  100. an appetite for godly things,

  101. while the fools have a taste only for ungodly things.

  102. And they have a great distaste,

  103. in fact,

  104. for the righteousness of God.

  105. So it prevents them from turning away from evil.

  106. And this is why,

  107. Proverbs teaches us,

  108. the appetite of the wicked will not be satisfied,

  109. ultimately speaking.

  110. And that's why verse 12 goes on to say,

  111. hope deferred makes the heart sick.

  112. The wicked will have their hope deferred,

  113. meaning not merely delayed temporarily,

  114. but denied indefinitely.

  115. This disappointment and frustration will lead to sickness of heart.

  116. Earlier in Proverbs chapter 4,

    Proverbs 4:23

  117. verse 23,

  118. it said that,

  119. it said,

  120. The Bible describes the heart,

  121. which represents the inner being of the person,

  122. as a source from which our lives flow,

  123. what we say,

  124. what we do.

  125. It is like the root of a plant.

  126. When the root is rotted,

  127. the plant does not long survive.

  128. Likewise,

  129. a sick heart ultimately leads to death.

  130. A sinful heart leads to eternal death.

  131. And this is why verse 12 continues,

  132. but a desire fulfilled is a tree of life.

  133. This is not a shallow statement about how people who get what they want are happy,

  134. but people who don't get what they want are sad.

  135. It's rather contrasting the desires of the wicked from the desires of the righteous.

  136. And we know this because an evil desire fulfilled is never described elsewhere as a tree of life,

  137. which is a symbol of vitality,

  138. healing,

  139. and ultimately eternal life.

  140. So the wicked's desires then are thwarted,

  141. and because their hearts are contrary to the will of God,

  142. for this reason they end up getting hearts sick.

  143. But the righteous desire are fulfilled,

  144. because their desires are aligned with the will of God.

  145. And so they find healing,

  146. life,

  147. walling up to eternal life in the end.

  148. The wicked might flourish,

  149. this assumes,

  150. for a little while,

  151. but when they do,

  152. they are like a plant that sprouts up quickly,

  153. because it has only a shallow root.

  154. And it will soon wither away,

  155. for the lack of its depth.

  156. In contrast,

  157. the righteous might suffer for a little while in this life,

  158. like a plant that seems to have trouble sprouting up,

  159. but all the while it's laying deep roots,

  160. and soon it will outgrow and outlast the wicked,

  161. and the righteous will be rewarded in eternity.

  162. And that's the reason why verse 13 exhorts the reader to heed the divinely inspired wisdom of God's word.

  163. Read with me in verse 13.

  164. It says,

  165. Whoever despises the word brings destruction on himself,

  166. but he who reveres the commandment will be rewarded.

  167. Now verse 13 is matched by verse 18.

  168. Poverty and disgrace come to him who ignores instruction,

  169. but whoever heeds reproof is honored.

  170. Poverty and disgrace stalk those who ignore instruction,

  171. but honor accompanies those who heed reproof.

  172. In other words,

  173. those who think highly of God and his word will be honored,

  174. while those who think God's word beneath them,

  175. because they think too highly of themselves,

  176. will be disgraced.

  177. And as we have seen throughout the book of Proverbs,

  178. the word poverty is used consistently in a negative way,

  179. in contrast with the word poor,

  180. which is used primarily in a positive way.

  181. The poor refer to those who are poor

  182. because of injustices in the world,

  183. through outside circumstances,

  184. outside of their control.

  185. Poverty, however,

  186. is used to refer to God's judgment

  187. on those,

  188. on people,

  189. on sinners and the wicked,

  190. for their, for example,

  191. laziness,

  192. stinginess,

  193. love of luxury,

  194. or carelessness.

  195. And poverty and disgrace come to them,

  196. prideful sinners who ignore God's instruction.

  197. And then in verses 14 and 17,

  198. Solomon commends himself

  199. as the wise instructor

  200. who faithfully conveys the wisdom of God.

  201. He says in verse 14,

  202. the teaching of the wise is a fountain of life

  203. that one may turn away from the snares of death.

  204. Right?

  205. This is compared to verse 12,

  206. which spoke of a desire for the foot as a tree of life.

  207. So here now it says,

  208. the teaching of the wise is a fountain of life.

  209. If you wish the fulfillment of the desires of your heart

  210. like a tree of life,

  211. then you should heed the teaching of the wise,

  212. which is a fountain of life.

  213. And this is matched by verse 17.

  214. A wicked messenger falls into trouble,

  215. but a faithful envoy brings healing.

  216. There are wicked messengers

  217. who do not faithfully convey the message

  218. that they have been sent to relay

  219. by the author,

  220. the sender.

  221. They sow discord through their failure.

  222. or intentional or not.

  223. They sow discord between the sender and the recipient.

  224. They separate us from God

  225. through their false teaching.

  226. Their words are like snares

  227. that ultimately lead to death.

  228. And these messengers,

  229. these wicked messengers,

  230. will become subject themselves

  231. to the trouble that they cause others.

  232. But in contrast,

  233. if you listen to the wise,

  234. like Solomon who's teaching here,

  235. the faithful envoy brings healing.

  236. There are wisdom teachers like Solomon

  237. and other contributors to the book of Proverbs,

  238. and their teaching leads to life.

  239. And so he's encouraging us to heed it,

  240. listen to it.

  241. And then verse 15 is matched by verse 16.

  242. This is the center of the concentric structure.

  243. It continues the exhortation.

  244. Good sense wins favor,

  245. but the way of the treacherous is their ruin.

  246. Every prudent man acts with knowledge,

  247. but a fool flaunts his folly.

  248. And this is really the main point

  249. of this entire passage,

  250. that only those who humbly receive God's word

  251. will have the desires of their hearts fulfilled.

  252. The fool desires treachery and folly,

  253. and so he will not follow God's word,

  254. and will not therefore be rewarded in the end.

  255. So that's what this passage teaches us

  256. about the desires of the heart.

  257. Now, only if it were easy to discern

  258. the desires of the heart,

  259. we would have no trouble distinguishing right from wrong

  260. and aligning ourselves and our desires

  261. with the will of God.

  262. Unfortunately, however, it's not easy,

  263. and that's due to the deceptiveness of the heart.

  264. It's what chapter 14, verses 1 to 15 speak of.

  265. Solomon builds his case gradually

  266. by continuing the contrast

  267. between the righteous and the wicked first.

  268. He says in verse 1,

  269. The wisest of women builds her house,

  270. but folly with her own hands tear it down.

  271. As I mentioned before,

  272. the word house, like in English,

  273. can refer to a physical building,

  274. but also to your family,

  275. to your household.

  276. And so here,

  277. the building and tearing down of the house

  278. figuratively represents

  279. what a wise woman does to her household.

  280. The wisest of women builds up her household.

  281. She makes her family flourish.

  282. In contrast,

  283. folly with her own hands tears it down.

  284. Of course,

  285. no one in her right mind

  286. would tear down her own household

  287. with her own hands,

  288. but the woman of folly,

  289. that's the point,

  290. has no idea that's what she is doing.

  291. By her own incompetence,

  292. by her own lack of discretion,

  293. by her own hot temper,

  294. by her own failure to bridle her tongue,

  295. these are the things we see throughout Proverbs,

  296. the foolish woman tears down her own household.

  297. And in verse 2,

  298. continues the contrast

  299. between the righteous and the wicked.

  300. Whoever walks in uprightness fears the Lord,

  301. but he who is devious in his ways

  302. despises him.

  303. Whoever walks upright,

  304. whoever fears the Lord,

  305. walks in a straight path,

  306. uprightly,

  307. but he who despises the Lord,

  308. goes astray,

  309. deviates.

  310. He has devious ways,

  311. crooked ways.

  312. And then verses 3 and 5,

  313. both contrast the speech of the righteous

  314. with the speech of the wicked.

  315. By the mouth of a fool

  316. comes a rod for his back,

  317. but the lips of the wise

  318. will preserve them.

  319. So the foolish speech of the fool

  320. is his own doing.

  321. It's as if his tongue itself

  322. becomes a rod

  323. with which he lashes his own back.

  324. In contrast,

  325. rather than being attacked

  326. and jeopardized by their own words,

  327. the wise are preserved,

  328. it says,

  329. by their words.

  330. And the things that the wicked say

  331. are not only characterized by folly,

  332. but also falsehood,

  333. as verse 5 says.

  334. A faithful witness does not lie,

  335. but a false witness

  336. breathes out lies.

  337. Whenever he opens his mouth,

  338. there is a lie.

  339. He lies as frequently

  340. and mindlessly

  341. as he breathes.

  342. He does not care for the truth.

  343. He has no regard for God

  344. and his commands,

  345. but only about getting

  346. his own selfish way.

  347. And then this brings us

  348. to verse 4,

  349. which shows us that

  350. the wicked person's folly

  351. is not seen only in his speech,

  352. but also in the way he works.

  353. It's a very cool proverb.

  354. Verse 4 says,

  355. Where there are no oxen,

  356. the manger is clean,

  357. but abundant crops

  358. come by the strength

  359. of the ox.

  360. A farmer can save himself

  361. a lot of labor and cost,

  362. of course,

  363. associated with keeping oxen

  364. by getting rid of all

  365. of his oxen.

  366. But if you did that,

  367. you would have no oxen

  368. to do the work

  369. so that you could have

  370. and enjoy

  371. an abundant harvest.

  372. And the word clean

  373. and word abundant

  374. are right next to each other

  375. in this verse.

  376. And the two words

  377. in Hebrew

  378. are spelled

  379. exactly the opposite.

  380. So if you spell

  381. clean backwards,

  382. it would be abundant

  383. in Hebrew.

  384. So this kind of

  385. highlights the contrast

  386. and this inversely,

  387. this inversely

  388. proportional relationship

  389. between having

  390. a clean manger

  391. and having

  392. an abundant crop.

  393. Yes, it's nice

  394. not to have

  395. to clean

  396. a dirty manger,

  397. but if you don't

  398. have a dirty manger

  399. to clean

  400. because you have

  401. no oxen,

  402. then you lack

  403. abundant crops

  404. only oxen can bring.

  405. There's so much

  406. wisdom in this verse.

  407. Foolish people

  408. do not want to

  409. roll up their sleeves

  410. and work

  411. and get dirt

  412. under their fingernails.

  413. They want easy money.

  414. Their mentality

  415. is cheat on that exam,

  416. plagiarize that paper

  417. to get a good grade,

  418. fudge the data

  419. or forge the evidence

  420. to win your argument.

  421. They want all the pleasure

  422. without any of the pain,

  423. all the acclaim

  424. without any of the work,

  425. but that's not how

  426. God has created

  427. this world to work.

  428. Human flourishing

  429. comes through

  430. the hard and messy

  431. work of life.

  432. If you are hospitable,

  433. your house is not

  434. going to remain

  435. in its pristine condition

  436. for long

  437. as people come and go.

  438. If you haven't

  439. raised children,

  440. they're going to

  441. derail some of your plans,

  442. perhaps some of your

  443. most cherished plans.

  444. If you cook and eat,

  445. you're going to have

  446. dirty dishes to clean.

  447. If you form a team

  448. to work on something

  449. you can't do by yourself,

  450. you're going to have to deal

  451. with interpersonal conflict.

  452. If you want to grow

  453. and scale up your business,

  454. you're going to have

  455. to invest in new systems,

  456. staff, and equipment.

  457. But this wisdom

  458. is beyond the reach

  459. of the fool.

  460. It says in verse 6,

  461. The scoffer seeks

  462. wisdom in vain,

  463. but knowledge is easy

  464. for a man of understanding.

  465. And that's because

  466. wisdom entails

  467. humble submission to God.

  468. The scoffer,

  469. one who scoffs

  470. at God's wisdom

  471. is by his very nature

  472. incapable of gaining wisdom

  473. because wisdom requires

  474. humbling oneself before God.

  475. In contrast,

  476. knowledge is easy

  477. for a man of understanding.

  478. The person who is

  479. in right relationship

  480. with God readily

  481. gain new knowledge.

  482. So it says in verse 7,

  483. Leave the presence

  484. of a fool,

  485. for there you do not

  486. meet words of knowledge.

  487. But telling the fool

  488. apart from the wise

  489. is the work of wisdom,

  490. isn't it?

  491. Verse 8 says,

  492. The wisdom of the prudent

  493. is to discern his way,

  494. but the folly of fools

  495. is deceiving.

  496. The prudent are discerning,

  497. they are careful

  498. in their way,

  499. and therefore

  500. will not be fooled.

  501. The fools, however,

  502. are deceiving.

  503. They deceive others

  504. and are themselves deceived

  505. by their lack of discernment.

  506. And verses 8 to 15

  507. here in chapter 14

  508. are also structured

  509. concentrically,

  510. like chapter 13

  511. verses 12 to 19.

  512. And so the second half

  513. mirrors the first half.

  514. So verse 8

  515. is matched by verse 15.

  516. It says,

  517. The simple believes everything,

  518. but the prudent

  519. gives thought to his steps.

  520. Again, prudent discerns his way,

  521. gives thought to his steps,

  522. but the folly of fools

  523. is deceiving.

  524. The simple believe everything.

  525. Things are not always

  526. as they seem

  527. because the folly of fools

  528. is deceiving.

  529. Therefore,

  530. it's imperative

  531. that the prudent,

  532. the wise,

  533. the shrewd

  534. give thought to their steps

  535. instead of believing everything.

  536. And fools who do not

  537. take heed to their ways

  538. are incapable of making amends.

  539. Verse 9 says,

  540. The fools mock at the guilt offering,

  541. but the upright

  542. enjoys acceptance.

  543. They laugh at the idea

  544. of a guilt offering

  545. because they always

  546. see themselves

  547. to be in the right

  548. and therefore see no need

  549. to make amends.

  550. They see no need

  551. to make the guilt sacrifice.

  552. And so they,

  553. and so that,

  554. but the righteous,

  555. on the other hand,

  556. they acknowledge

  557. their guilt freely

  558. and because they

  559. humble themselves

  560. in that way,

  561. they make the appropriate sacrifice

  562. and in doing so,

  563. find acceptance

  564. before God.

  565. And this verse

  566. is matched by verse 14,

  567. which also speaks

  568. of the consequences

  569. of sin and righteousness.

  570. The backslider in heart

  571. will be filled

  572. with the fruit of his ways

  573. and a good man

  574. will be filled

  575. with the fruit of his ways.

  576. Exact same phrases

  577. highlight

  578. that they will both

  579. get what they deserve.

  580. The backslider in heart

  581. who does not repent,

  582. but instead mocks

  583. at the guilt offering,

  584. will be filled

  585. with the fruit of his ways,

  586. what his pride

  587. and scoffing deserve.

  588. And likewise,

  589. good man

  590. who perseveres

  591. in his righteousness

  592. will be filled

  593. with the fruit

  594. of his ways.

  595. In the final analysis,

  596. God is perfectly just

  597. and he sees

  598. into every human heart

  599. both the righteous

  600. and the wicked

  601. and therefore

  602. they will get

  603. what they deserve.

  604. And so in the end,

  605. there will be

  606. a clear separation

  607. between the righteous

  608. and the wicked,

  609. but we need to remember

  610. that in the present,

  611. things are not always

  612. as they appear.

  613. The heart

  614. has its own secrets

  615. that no one knows of.

  616. It says in verse 10,

  617. the heart knows

  618. its own bitterness

  619. and no stranger

  620. shares its joy.

  621. Such a poignant proverb.

  622. Bitterness and joy

  623. represent the full range

  624. of human emotions.

  625. And your heart,

  626. it is saying,

  627. has secrets

  628. that are known

  629. to no one else

  630. but you.

  631. The heart

  632. has its own secrets.

  633. This proverb speaks

  634. to the profound loneliness

  635. of human existence

  636. apart from God.

  637. Of course,

  638. your family and friends

  639. can share

  640. your joys and sorrows

  641. in part,

  642. but there is a sense

  643. in which everyone

  644. outside of you

  645. is a stranger

  646. to your emotions,

  647. to your own heart.

  648. They cannot fully share

  649. the bitterness

  650. or joy

  651. of your heart.

  652. In fact,

  653. even you

  654. do not fully understand

  655. the motivations

  656. and emotions

  657. of your own heart.

  658. Only God sees

  659. us wholly

  660. and knows us

  661. perfectly.

  662. And this verse

  663. is matched

  664. and complemented

  665. by verse 13.

  666. Even in laughter

  667. the heart may ache

  668. and the end

  669. of joy

  670. may be grief.

  671. Even those

  672. who are laughing

  673. and playing

  674. and partying

  675. and living it up

  676. might be masking

  677. a deep heartache.

  678. A smile

  679. on one's face

  680. might be hiding

  681. deep bitterness

  682. of heart.

  683. The end of joy

  684. may be grief.

  685. For them,

  686. it actually simply says

  687. the end of joy

  688. is grief.

  689. Why is the end

  690. of joy grief

  691. for such people?

  692. To understand this,

  693. we need to look at

  694. verses 11 to 12.

  695. It says,

  696. The house of the wicked

  697. will be destroyed,

  698. but the tent

  699. of the upright

  700. will flourish.

  701. There is a way

  702. that seems right

  703. to a man,

  704. but its end

  705. is the way

  706. to death.

  707. These two verses

  708. match each other.

  709. First,

  710. the house of the wicked

  711. is contrasted

  712. with the tent

  713. of the upright.

  714. The house

  715. is a more permanent

  716. and secure

  717. dwelling place

  718. than the tent.

  719. That's why

  720. King David

  721. expresses his desire

  722. to build a temple

  723. for God

  724. in this way

  725. in 2 Samuel 7,

    2 Samuel 7:2

  726. verse 2.

  727. He says,

  728. See now,

  729. I dwell in a house

  730. of cedar,

  731. but the ark

  732. of God

  733. dwells in a tent.

  734. He saw

  735. the incongruity

  736. of that.

  737. He saw that

  738. that needed

  739. to be corrected.

  740. So,

  741. but surprisingly,

  742. this proverb says,

  743. The house

  744. of the wicked,

  745. that more permanent

  746. and secure

  747. seemingly dwelling,

  748. that will be destroyed,

  749. but the tent

  750. of the upright

  751. will flourish.

  752. Even though

  753. during this short

  754. lifespan here on earth,

  755. the wicked

  756. may seem to be

  757. more established

  758. and secure.

  759. They might seem

  760. to prosper more.

  761. In the end,

  762. it's the righteous

  763. who will be established,

  764. who will endure.

  765. And that's because

  766. there is a way

  767. that seems right

  768. to a man,

  769. but its end

  770. is the way

  771. to death.

  772. This teaches us

  773. that it's not

  774. always wise

  775. to follow your heart.

  776. it is not

  777. always wise

  778. to obey

  779. your conscience

  780. because of the

  781. deceptiveness

  782. of our hearts.

  783. It's not

  784. our consciences

  785. sometimes

  786. need to be

  787. recalibrated,

  788. adjusted,

  789. realigned

  790. with the teachings

  791. of God's Word.

  792. Our sense

  793. of right

  794. and wrong

  795. itself

  796. can be wrong.

  797. There is a way

  798. that seems

  799. right to a man,

  800. but its end

  801. is the way

  802. to death.

  803. Our deceptive

  804. hearts

  805. must be

  806. subjected

  807. to the truth

  808. of God's Word.

  809. Only the all-knowing

  810. and all-seeing

  811. God

  812. can be a sure

  813. guide to eternal life.

  814. That's what this passage

  815. is teaching us.

  816. We can't rely

  817. on sinful humanity

  818. to discover

  819. spiritual truths

  820. on its own.

  821. We must rely

  822. on what God

  823. has revealed

  824. to us

  825. in His Word.

  826. No matter

  827. how right

  828. and true

  829. and good

  830. a way of life

  831. might seem

  832. to you,

  833. if it is not

  834. the way

  835. of the Lord,

  836. its end

  837. is the way

  838. to death.

  839. And this

  840. illuminates

  841. verse 13.

  842. Even in laughter

  843. the heart

  844. may ache

  845. and the end

  846. of joy

  847. may be grief.

  848. The end

  849. of joy

  850. is grief.

  851. For those

  852. who do not

  853. know God,

  854. for those

  855. who do not

  856. possess the wisdom

  857. of God,

  858. no matter

  859. how much

  860. you flourish

  861. and thrive

  862. in this life,

  863. the end

  864. of joy

  865. is grief

  866. because it

  867. ends finally

  868. in death.

  869. There's a way

  870. that seems

  871. right to a man

  872. and its end

  873. is death.

  874. One Bible

  875. commentator

  876. puts it this way,

  877. quote,

  878. since humans

  879. die,

  880. joy inevitably

  881. ends in grief.

  882. The party

  883. always ends.

  884. Acts of love

  885. cease.

  886. We have a similar

  887. English proverb

  888. don't we?

  889. It says,

  890. all good things

  891. must come

  892. to an end.

  893. The unavoidability

  894. of death

  895. means that

  896. all the joys

  897. of life

  898. eventually

  899. come to

  900. an end,

  901. leaving only

  902. regret

  903. and resignation.

  904. If you look

  905. at an

  906. electrocardiography

  907. reading,

  908. the heart

  909. measuring the

  910. graph

  911. has all

  912. these spikes

  913. and imagine

  914. that that's

  915. like the

  916. joys of life.

  917. But the

  918. depressing reality

  919. is that

  920. that graph

  921. in the end

  922. always ends

  923. in that

  924. flat line.

  925. That's the

  926. reality of life.

  927. That's the

  928. backdrop

  929. behind all

  930. of your

  931. joys

  932. that is

  933. the destiny

  934. of every

  935. human being.

  936. If

  937. you do not

  938. have the

  939. eternal life

  940. that God

  941. offers you.

  942. If even

  943. in the

  944. laughter

  945. the heart

  946. may ache

  947. and the

  948. end of

  949. joy may

  950. be grief,

  951. if there's

  952. a way that

  953. seems right

  954. to a man

  955. but its

  956. end is the

  957. way to

  958. death,

  959. if our

  960. hearts are

  961. deceptive

  962. and cannot

  963. reliably guide

  964. us to the

  965. way of

  966. life,

  967. where can

  968. we turn?

  969. Jeremiah

  970. 17,

  971. 9-10

  972. says this,

  973. the heart

  974. is deceitful

  975. above all

  976. things and

  977. desperately

  978. sick.

  979. Who can

  980. understand it?

  981. And here's

  982. the answer,

  983. I the

  984. Lord

  985. search the

  986. heart and

  987. test the

  988. mind to

  989. give every

  990. man according

  991. to his

  992. ways,

  993. according to

  994. the fruit of

  995. his deeds.

  996. The answer

  997. is we need

  998. to turn to

  999. the Lord

  1000. because only

  1001. those who

  1002. humbly

  1003. receive God's

  1004. word will

  1005. have their

  1006. desires fulfilled.

  1007. heart.

  1008. And that

  1009. brings us to

  1010. the third

  1011. point,

  1012. the delight

  1013. of the

  1014. heart.

  1015. We need

  1016. to realign

  1017. our hearts

  1018. to the

  1019. ways of

  1020. the Lord

  1021. by delighting

  1022. ourselves

  1023. in him.

  1024. Turn to

  1025. chapter 15

  1026. verses 11-17

  1027. with me.

  1028. We'll

  1029. preach on

  1030. this in

  1031. two weeks,

  1032. so I'm

  1033. not going

  1034. to get

  1035. into too

  1036. much detail,

  1037. but this

  1038. makes an

  1039. important

  1040. contribution

  1041. to the

  1042. understanding

  1043. of the

  1044. human

  1045. heart that

  1046. we're

  1047. talking about

  1048. today.

  1049. It says

  1050. in chapter

  1051. 15,

  1052. verse 11,

  1053. Sheol and

  1054. Abaddon

  1055. lie open

  1056. before the

  1057. Lord.

  1058. How much

  1059. more the

  1060. hearts of

  1061. the children

  1062. of man.

  1063. Sheol and

  1064. Abaddon are

  1065. figurative,

  1066. poetic terms

  1067. for death

  1068. and destruction.

  1069. They're the

  1070. shadowy

  1071. realms that

  1072. are completely

  1073. inaccessible

  1074. to humanity.

  1075. And yet

  1076. even they

  1077. lie open

  1078. before the

  1079. Lord.

  1080. The

  1081. mysterious

  1082. realm of

  1083. the dead

  1084. is like an

  1085. open book

  1086. to God.

  1087. If that's

  1088. the case,

  1089. how much

  1090. more than

  1091. do the

  1092. hearts of

  1093. the children

  1094. of man,

  1095. which,

  1096. even though

  1097. yes,

  1098. it's complex,

  1099. are far

  1100. less mysterious

  1101. than Sheol and

  1102. Abaddon,

  1103. how much

  1104. do they,

  1105. our hearts,

  1106. lie open

  1107. before God

  1108. who is all

  1109. knowing and

  1110. all seeing.

  1111. Our hearts

  1112. are transparent

  1113. to Him.

  1114. He sees

  1115. through it

  1116. all.

  1117. He knows

  1118. all the

  1119. hidden murmurings

  1120. and motivations

  1121. that even we

  1122. ourselves are not

  1123. aware of.

  1124. And for this

  1125. reason,

  1126. we need to

  1127. humbly submit

  1128. to God

  1129. His sober

  1130. judgment and

  1131. assessment of

  1132. ourselves and

  1133. our condition

  1134. rather than

  1135. relying on our

  1136. own indulgent

  1137. assessment of

  1138. ourselves and

  1139. our state.

  1140. We need to

  1141. be corrected,

  1142. we need to be

  1143. receptive to

  1144. learning.

  1145. And so verse

  1146. 12 says,

  1147. A scoffer does

  1148. not like to be

  1149. reproved,

  1150. he will not

  1151. go to the

  1152. wise.

  1153. But those who

  1154. humbly receive

  1155. God's word will

  1156. have the desires

  1157. of their hearts

  1158. fulfilled.

  1159. So it says

  1160. in verses

  1161. 13 to 14

  1162. of chapter 15,

  1163. A glad heart

  1164. makes a cheerful

  1165. face,

  1166. but by sorrow

  1167. of heart the

  1168. spirit is

  1169. crushed.

  1170. The heart of

  1171. him who has

  1172. understanding

  1173. seeks knowledge,

  1174. but the mouths

  1175. of fools feed

  1176. on falling.

  1177. It's the heart

  1178. that has

  1179. understanding

  1180. that seeks

  1181. further knowledge

  1182. and that kind

  1183. of heart is

  1184. a glad heart.

  1185. and a glad

  1186. heart cheers

  1187. up even

  1188. our face,

  1189. uplifts

  1190. even our

  1191. own spirit.

  1192. And verses

  1193. 15 to 17

  1194. continue,

  1195. All the days

  1196. of the afflicted

  1197. are evil,

  1198. but the cheerful

  1199. of heart

  1200. has a

  1201. continual feast.

  1202. Better is a

  1203. little with the

  1204. fear of the

  1205. Lord than

  1206. great treasure

  1207. and trouble

  1208. with it.

  1209. Better is a

  1210. dinner of herbs

  1211. where love is

  1212. than a fattened

  1213. ox and hatred

  1214. with it.

  1215. The word

  1216. cheerful is

  1217. repeated in

  1218. verse 15

  1219. from verse 13

  1220. and the word

  1221. better is

  1222. repeated twice

  1223. in verses

  1224. 16 to 17.

  1225. And the two

  1226. words,

  1227. word cheerful

  1228. and better

  1229. are actually

  1230. variations of

  1231. the exact

  1232. same Hebrew

  1233. word.

  1234. And so if we

  1235. render the

  1236. word better

  1237. as cheerful,

  1238. we can see

  1239. the logical

  1240. connection

  1241. between these

  1242. verses a

  1243. little more

  1244. clearly.

  1245. Because it

  1246. says that

  1247. all the days

  1248. of the wicked

  1249. are afflicted

  1250. with evil,

  1251. right?

  1252. But the

  1253. cheerful of

  1254. heart has

  1255. a continual

  1256. feast.

  1257. But how

  1258. can this

  1259. be the

  1260. case when

  1261. we know

  1262. from other

  1263. proverbs that

  1264. we've seen

  1265. that this

  1266. world is

  1267. full of

  1268. injustice,

  1269. where other

  1270. proverbs

  1271. acknowledge that

  1272. sometimes the

  1273. wicked prosper?

  1274. How can the

  1275. cheerful of

  1276. heart have a

  1277. continual feast?

  1278. The answer is

  1279. in verses 16

  1280. and 17.

  1281. Cheerful,

  1282. better,

  1283. remember the

  1284. same word,

  1285. cheerful is a

  1286. little with

  1287. the fear of

  1288. the Lord

  1289. than great

  1290. treasure and

  1291. trouble with

  1292. it.

  1293. Cheerful is a

  1294. dinner of herbs

  1295. where love is

  1296. than a

  1297. fattened ox

  1298. and hatred

  1299. with it.

  1300. The cheerful

  1301. of heart has

  1302. a continual

  1303. feast.

  1304. Even when he

  1305. only has

  1306. meager herbs

  1307. for dinner,

  1308. even when he

  1309. only has

  1310. little treasure,

  1311. because his

  1312. heart is

  1313. satisfied in

  1314. the fear of

  1315. the Lord,

  1316. because his

  1317. heart is

  1318. characterized by

  1319. his love for

  1320. God and his

  1321. neighbor,

  1322. the cheerful

  1323. heart that

  1324. loves the

  1325. Lord has a

  1326. continual feast.

  1327. his cheerfulness

  1328. does not

  1329. depend on

  1330. health and

  1331. wealth,

  1332. and therefore

  1333. it overcomes

  1334. all affliction.

  1335. So then all

  1336. the days of

  1337. the wicked are

  1338. afflicted with

  1339. evil even when

  1340. they enjoy

  1341. health and

  1342. wealth.

  1343. In contrast,

  1344. the cheerful

  1345. of heart has a

  1346. continual feast

  1347. even when he

  1348. is sick and

  1349. poor,

  1350. because the

  1351. delight of his

  1352. heart is in

  1353. the Lord.

  1354. No matter

  1355. what happens,

  1356. I will be

  1357. making my

  1358. food to do

  1359. the will of

  1360. him who

  1361. sent me.

  1362. That's the

  1363. attitude,

  1364. that's the

  1365. heart that

  1366. has a

  1367. continual

  1368. feast.

  1369. As Psalm

    Psalms 37:4

  1370. 37 verse

  1371. 4 says,

  1372. delight yourself

  1373. in the Lord

  1374. and he will

  1375. give you the

  1376. desires of

  1377. your heart.

  1378. this doesn't

  1379. mean that he

  1380. will cater to

  1381. our every

  1382. whim.

  1383. This doesn't

  1384. mean that God

  1385. is a genie

  1386. or a butler,

  1387. but those who

  1388. delight in the

  1389. Lord.

  1390. In other words,

  1391. those who think

  1392. God's thoughts

  1393. after him,

  1394. those who love

  1395. the things that

  1396. God loves,

  1397. they will find

  1398. that God gives

  1399. them the desires

  1400. of their hearts

  1401. because every

  1402. true Christian's

  1403. deepest desire

  1404. and longing

  1405. is the glory

  1406. of God.

  1407. to love

  1408. and serve

  1409. him with

  1410. our whole

  1411. life.

  1412. And that

  1413. desire will

  1414. never be

  1415. disappointed.

  1416. It's those

  1417. whose hearts

  1418. delight in

  1419. the Lord,

  1420. those who

  1421. humbly

  1422. receive God's

  1423. word who

  1424. have the

  1425. desires of

  1426. their hearts

  1427. fulfilled.

  1428. So we've

  1429. talked about

  1430. the desires

  1431. of the heart,

  1432. the deceptiveness

  1433. of the heart,

  1434. and the delight

  1435. of the heart,

  1436. but I've been

  1437. dancing around

  1438. the question

  1439. that I posed

  1440. at the beginning

  1441. of the sermon.

  1442. What are we

  1443. to do when

  1444. the desires

  1445. of our hearts

  1446. are not

  1447. aligned?

  1448. When we,

  1449. when our

  1450. hearts don't

  1451. delight in

  1452. the Lord

  1453. and desire

  1454. the things

  1455. of God?

  1456. If you are

  1457. not yet a

  1458. Christian,

  1459. please don't

  1460. think that

  1461. this is

  1462. something that

  1463. you can attain

  1464. with little

  1465. adjustments in

  1466. your desires

  1467. and habits

  1468. here and

  1469. there.

  1470. You can't

  1471. fix a

  1472. spiritually

  1473. malfunctioning

  1474. heart by

  1475. being a

  1476. little more

  1477. religious

  1478. and observing

  1479. a few

  1480. more rules.

  1481. This is

  1482. not something

  1483. that can

  1484. be remedied

  1485. with spiritual

  1486. antacids.

  1487. It requires

  1488. a heart

  1489. transplant.

  1490. And that's

  1491. precisely what

  1492. God promised

  1493. us in

  1494. chapter 36

  1495. verses 25

  1496. to 27.

  1497. I will

  1498. sprinkle

  1499. clean water

  1500. on you

  1501. and you

  1502. shall be

  1503. clean from

  1504. all your

  1505. uncleanness.

  1506. And from

  1507. all your

  1508. idols I

  1509. will cleanse

  1510. you and

  1511. I will give

  1512. you a

  1513. new heart

  1514. and a

  1515. new spirit

  1516. I will

  1517. put within

  1518. you and

  1519. I will

  1520. remove the

  1521. heart of

  1522. stone from

  1523. your flesh

  1524. and give

  1525. you a

  1526. heart of

  1527. flesh.

  1528. And I

  1529. will put

  1530. my spirit

  1531. within you

  1532. and cause

  1533. you to

  1534. walk in

  1535. my statutes

  1536. and be

  1537. careful to

  1538. obey my

  1539. rules.

  1540. That is

  1541. the only

  1542. hope for

  1543. change,

  1544. only hope

  1545. for salvation

  1546. and God

  1547. fulfilled this

  1548. promise to

  1549. give us new

  1550. hearts through

  1551. the person

  1552. and work

  1553. of Jesus

  1554. Christ.

  1555. He says

  1556. in Hebrews

    Hebrews 10:19–22

  1557. chapter 10

  1558. verses 19

  1559. to 22,

  1560. Therefore,

  1561. brothers,

  1562. since we

  1563. have confidence

  1564. to enter the

  1565. holy places

  1566. by the

  1567. blood of

  1568. Jesus,

  1569. by the

  1570. new and

  1571. living way

  1572. that he

  1573. opened for

  1574. us through

  1575. the curtain

  1576. that is

  1577. through his

  1578. flesh,

  1579. and since

  1580. we have a

  1581. great priest

  1582. over the

  1583. house of

  1584. God,

  1585. let us

  1586. draw near

  1587. with a

  1588. true heart,

  1589. in full

  1590. assurance of

  1591. faith,

  1592. with our

  1593. hearts

  1594. sprinkled

  1595. clean from

  1596. an evil

  1597. conscience,

  1598. and our

  1599. bodies washed

  1600. with pure

  1601. water.

  1602. This is the

  1603. way God

  1604. gives us

  1605. new and

  1606. true hearts.

  1607. This is the

  1608. way God

  1609. gives us

  1610. a new

  1611. nature,

  1612. and gives

  1613. us full

  1614. assurance of

  1615. faith.

  1616. This is how

  1617. God sprinkles

  1618. our hearts

  1619. clean,

  1620. just as a

  1621. heart transplant

  1622. physically requires

  1623. someone else's

  1624. death.

  1625. spiritual

  1626. regeneration,

  1627. receiving of

  1628. new hearts,

  1629. requires

  1630. someone else's

  1631. death,

  1632. and Jesus

  1633. died that

  1634. death for

  1635. us.

  1636. He bore

  1637. our sins,

  1638. he took

  1639. our place,

  1640. he shed

  1641. his blood

  1642. for the

  1643. cleansing of

  1644. our own

  1645. hearts,

  1646. and it's

  1647. when we

  1648. repent of

  1649. our sins

  1650. and believe

  1651. in him

  1652. for our

  1653. salvation

  1654. that God

  1655. pours out

  1656. his holy

  1657. spirit into

  1658. us so

  1659. that we

  1660. have a

  1661. new life

  1662. principle

  1663. pulsating

  1664. from within

  1665. us.

  1666. And it's

  1667. only then

  1668. can we

  1669. walk in

  1670. the statutes

  1671. and be

  1672. careful to

  1673. obey rules.

  1674. Now,

  1675. this doesn't

  1676. mean that

  1677. everything is

  1678. smooth sailing

  1679. once you

  1680. become a

  1681. Christian.

  1682. Even after

  1683. someone has

  1684. a heart

  1685. transplant to

  1686. replace a

  1687. defective

  1688. heart,

  1689. though he

  1690. has a

  1691. new heart,

  1692. he still

  1693. needs time

  1694. to learn

  1695. to breathe

  1696. and live

  1697. on his

  1698. own.

  1699. So for

  1700. a little

  1701. while,

  1702. after the

  1703. surgery,

  1704. he'll still

  1705. be hooked

  1706. onto a

  1707. ventilator

  1708. and a

  1709. variety of

  1710. catheters.

  1711. And it's

  1712. only when

  1713. the patient

  1714. after surgery

  1715. has grown

  1716. much stronger

  1717. that those

  1718. things can

  1719. be removed

  1720. from his

  1721. body,

  1722. and the

  1723. new heart

  1724. begins to

  1725. pump blood

  1726. and life

  1727. into the

  1728. rest of

  1729. his body

  1730. so that he

  1731. can start

  1732. a new

  1733. life.

  1734. similarly

  1735. for us,

  1736. we have

  1737. been made

  1738. new in

  1739. Christ,

  1740. and we

  1741. have been

  1742. given new

  1743. hearts,

  1744. but our

  1745. flesh is

  1746. still accustomed

  1747. to the

  1748. old life.

  1749. It still

  1750. operates like

  1751. it has a

  1752. defective

  1753. heart.

  1754. And it

  1755. takes time

  1756. for us to

  1757. be weaned

  1758. off from

  1759. those old

  1760. ways and to

  1761. function fully

  1762. with the

  1763. new hearts

  1764. God has

  1765. given.

  1766. And that's

  1767. what is

  1768. happening

  1769. throughout

  1770. our entire

  1771. lives.

  1772. That's the

  1773. process that

  1774. we call

  1775. sanctification.

  1776. Until we

  1777. die and

  1778. we shed

  1779. our old

  1780. flesh,

  1781. and then

  1782. when Christ

  1783. returns,

  1784. we will be

  1785. retrofitted

  1786. with these

  1787. new glorious

  1788. resurrection

  1789. bodies that

  1790. will be

  1791. worthy of

  1792. the new

  1793. hearts we've

  1794. been given

  1795. through Jesus,

  1796. through his

  1797. costly

  1798. sacrifice.

  1799. And I

  1800. want to

  1801. encourage you,

  1802. brothers and

  1803. sisters,

  1804. those of you

  1805. who are already

  1806. Christians,

  1807. followers of

  1808. Christ,

  1809. are you

  1810. discouraged that

  1811. you do not

  1812. love the

  1813. Lord as

  1814. you ought

  1815. to?

  1816. Are you

  1817. disappointed

  1818. that you

  1819. do not

  1820. desire God

  1821. and delight

  1822. in him as

  1823. much as

  1824. you should?

  1825. Let me ask

  1826. you,

  1827. isn't that

  1828. desire,

  1829. isn't that

  1830. desire to

  1831. desire him

  1832. more?

  1833. Isn't that

  1834. desire to

  1835. be more

  1836. pleasing to

  1837. him?

  1838. Isn't that

  1839. desire also

  1840. a sign of

  1841. your new

  1842. birth?

  1843. A sign of

  1844. your regeneration?

  1845. Is that

  1846. not evidence

  1847. that you

  1848. have tasted

  1849. and delighted

  1850. in him?

  1851. Is not

  1852. God tenderly

  1853. and patiently

  1854. walking beside

  1855. you to

  1856. strengthen you

  1857. every step

  1858. of the way?

  1859. Remember

  1860. what Christ

  1861. did for

  1862. you.

  1863. Take hold

  1864. of him

  1865. by faith

  1866. and his

  1867. love poured

  1868. into your

  1869. hearts will

  1870. renew you,

  1871. renew your

  1872. love for

  1873. him and

  1874. enable you to

  1875. persevere to

  1876. the end.
