  1. Thanks, John, for showing that kind of last minute.

  2. Also want to thank all the people who decided to take the technical difficulties away from

  3. me.

  4. It seems like there always has to be a couple, and so I appreciate that.

  5. But this morning we're going to be looking at Proverbs chapter 15, the whole chapter.

    Proverbs 15 chapter mention

  6. Last week, Sean used a few of the verses, but we're going to take the whole chapter this

  7. morning.

  8. And so let's start off by reading that together.

  9. Proverbs chapter 15.

    Proverbs 15 chapter mention

  10. A soft answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger.

  11. The tongue of the wise commends knowledge, but the mouths of fools pour out folly.

  12. The eyes of the Lord are in every place, keeping watch on the evil and the good.

  13. A gentle tongue is a tree of life, but perversionness in it breaks the spirit.

  14. A fool despises his father's instruction, but whoever heeds reproof is prudent.

  15. In the house of the righteous there is much treasure, but trouble befalls the income of

  16. the wicked.

  17. The lips of the wise spread knowledge, not so the hearts of fools.

  18. The sacrifice of the wicked is an abomination to the Lord, but the prayer of the upright is

  19. acceptable to him.

  20. The way of the wicked is an abomination to the Lord, but he loves him who pursues righteousness.

  21. There is severe discipline for him who forsakes the way.

  22. Whoever hates reproof will die.

  23. Sheol and Abaddon lie open before the Lord.

  24. How much more the hearts of the children of man.

  25. A scoffer does not like to be reproved.

  26. He will not go to the wise.

  27. A glad heart makes a cheerful face.

  28. But by sorrow of heart the spirit is crushed.

  29. The heart of him who has understanding seeks knowledge.

  30. But the mouths of fools feed on folly.

  31. All the days of the afflicted are evil, but the cheerful of heart has a continual feast.

  32. Better is a little with the fear of the Lord than great treasure in trouble with it.

  33. Better is a dinner of herbs where love is than a fattened ox in hatred with it.

  34. A hot-tempered man stirs up strife, but he who is slow to anger quiets contention.

  35. The way of a slugger is like a hedge of thorns, but the path of the upright is a level highway.

  36. A wise son makes a glad father, and a foolish man despises his mother.

  37. Folly is a joy to him who lacks sense, but a man of understanding walks straight ahead.

  38. Without counsel, plans fail, and with many advisors they succeed.

  39. But with many advisors they succeed.

  40. To make an apt answer is a joy to a man, and a word in season how good it is.

  41. The path of life leads upward for the prudent, that he may turn away from Sheol beneath.

  42. The Lord tears down the house of the proud, but maintains the widow's boundaries.

  43. The thoughts of the wicked are an abomination to the Lord, but gracious words are pure.

  44. Whoever is greedy for unjust gain troubles his own household, but he who hates bribes will live.

  45. The heart of the righteous ponders how to answer, but the mouth of the wicked pours out evil things.

  46. The Lord is far from the wicked, but he hears the prayer of the righteous.

  47. The light of the eyes rejoices the heart, and good news refreshes the bones.

  48. The ear that listens to life-giving reproof will dwell among the wise.

  49. Whoever ignores instruction despises himself, and he who listens to reproof gains intelligence.

  50. The fear of the Lord is instruction in wisdom, and humility comes before honor.

  51. I think it's probably safe to say of most of us that when we were growing up, there was parental advice that we would get at different times.

  52. For me, one of those phrases that I remember was, you're either going to be a leader or a follower.

  53. And I don't remember a specific situation where that was said to me.

  54. It was usually when we were going out, maybe for a weekend or hanging out with friends.

  55. But we knew with that, Matt, right?

  56. You were either going to stand strong and be a leader and make right decisions, regardless of what other people did.

  57. Or you were going to be a follower and just follow after what everyone else decided.

  58. That's a helpful statement, and it's true, but I think for this morning's passage, I want to go with a statement that's a little different.

  59. And that is that everyone is a leader in their own way.

  60. Everyone is a leader, whether good or bad.

  61. They are a leader in some way.

  62. You may be a leader and good at it or bad at it.

  63. You may be a follower, but in your following, you lead.

  64. You lead as an example, whether doing it well or doing it poorly.

  65. Each of us lead in a different way in our household, in our family, in the group of friends or roommates that we live with.

  66. The people we may work around or do Zoom with more often.

  67. Whatever our life situation, we lead ourselves and we also lead or affect people around us.

  68. And either that leading is towards God, wisdom, and life, or it's towards self-destruction or towards foolishness.

  69. So you're leading yourself towards a destination, and in that, you affect other people.

  70. So what does that have to do with our chapter this morning, Proverbs 15?

  71. There are a lot of topics that are hit in this Proverbs, but there's a heavier focus on our words, how we speak, and the condition or the stance of our heart.

  72. And we're also told a little bit about how those are connected together, and we'll get into that.

  73. So how are you leading?

  74. Are you leading yourselves and others towards what is good and what you say and what your heart is like?

  75. Or are you leading others away from God and in a wrong direction?

  76. I think of it kind of like online reviews, right?

  77. We may be reading them more lately because we're buying more online, but whether it's food or places or things that we're purchasing,

  78. we look at the reviews from other people and it affects us.

  79. They lead people one way or another, right?

  80. They affect my choices, and I'm sure they affect yours.

  81. I'm a big fan of online reviews, but I also hate online reviews.

  82. The reason is because they're in conflict sometimes with one another.

  83. You read two different things in a review and it's not helpful.

  84. Our leading can be like that also, right?

  85. Our leading can be in conflict with or out of step with what God calls us to do,

  86. how we're saying to one person the living in a different way.

  87. So our goal as a Christian is to present a good review to others,

  88. to be able to lead them toward God and not away from Him.

  89. So before we begin, let's open in the word of prayer, and we'll start in verse 1.

  90. Lord, I ask for your help this morning as I preach,

  91. and Lord, I ask for ears that are open, not to hear the words that I have to say,

  92. but to hear the words that you have to say from your word.

  93. Lord, I pray that you would give me the words to speak,

  94. that you would give me wisdom as I preach this chapter with a goal of teaching all of us

  95. what you desire, what you desire of our life, what you desire from our heart and how we live.

  96. Lord, we seek to honor you.

  97. So Lord, we ask that you would help us this morning at this time to learn how to do that

  98. in a good and a right way so that we can bring you glory and you honor.

  99. And Lord, we ask these things in your precious name. Amen.

  100. All right, so here's the summary.

  101. In our words and in our heart,

  102. how are we leading ourselves and others?

  103. In wisdom towards God or in foolishness away from Him?

  104. So as we look at Proverbs 15, there are a number of verses that deal with the tongue.

  105. And I'll apologize ahead of time.

  106. Just the way that this chapter is written,

  107. we're going to jump around a little bit.

  108. So just bear with me and turn quickly and we'll try to cover them all.

  109. Verse 1 says,

  110. A soft answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger.

  111. When it comes to the words that we say,

  112. how do we lead, how do we affect those around us?

  113. Are you the soft answer or the harsh word?

  114. Here, harsh word means a word of pain.

  115. A word of pain given usually invokes anger in another person.

  116. So we affect others by what we say and how we say it.

  117. Do your words stir up anger or do they soothe and promote peace?

  118. In Matthew 5 verse 9,

    Matthew 5:9

  119. Jesus said,

  120. Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God.

  121. When you get upset,

  122. do you make your people feel how upset you are?

  123. Or do you have to continue to argue so that your point is made?

  124. Do you have to get your say in there?

  125. Or are you able to hold back that harsh word and instead give a soft answer?

  126. So is your speech peaceful?

  127. Jumping down to verse 18,

  128. it says,

  129. A hot-tempered man stirs up strife,

  130. but he who is slow to anger quiets contention.

  131. A hot-tempered man is someone who doesn't have control of their anger, their emotions.

  132. They're not under control.

  133. And so they stir up strife.

  134. That is, conflict that wasn't there is now there because they have created it.

  135. A person who is slow to anger, they have their emotions and their words under control.

  136. And so they're able to quiet contention or smooth the waters.

  137. A decision made in the heart to keep the words, our words, in check.

  138. Humbly saying,

  139. I will control myself and hold back what I really want to say so that there is peace.

  140. So that I can lead in righteousness and love.

  141. And so that God is pleased even in this conversation.

  142. So is your speech humble and patient?

  143. Jumping back to verse 2.

  144. The tongue of the wise commends knowledge.

  145. That is, what the wise says makes knowledge appealing.

  146. Knowledge becomes something people want because of the way it is said.

  147. But the mouth of fools pour out folly.

  148. In other words, what the fool has to say, no one wants.

  149. What the wise has to say makes people want it even more.

  150. This verse connects well, actually, if you jump down to verse 28.

  151. It says,

  152. Why does the righteous ponder how to answer?

  153. Verse 23 gives us the answer to that.

  154. It says,

  155. To make an apt answer is a joy to a man and a word in season how good it is.

  156. Who doesn't want to give that appropriate answer at the right time?

  157. Doesn't it feel good when you have that answer?

  158. To be able to give that word of encouragement, that word of comfort, or wise input to someone who's struggling.

  159. It feels good.

  160. But not only that, it's helpful to others when we're able to do that.

  161. So the question is, is our speech desirable by others?

  162. The gentle tongue, in verse 4, can be used for good or bad.

  163. It says,

  164. A gentle tongue is a tree of life, but perverseness in it breaks the spirit.

  165. So kind and encouraging words are a tree of life.

  166. They can bring healing to someone who is hurting and in pain.

  167. However, that same gentle tongue can also bring with it something that's mean or twisted.

  168. So that's the perverseness that this verse is talking about.

  169. The perverseness in it that breaks the spirit.

  170. So a gentle tongue can be used for good or for bad.

  171. For healing or for hurt.

  172. So hopefully our speech, our words, are healing.

  173. Verse 5 says,

  174. A fool despises his father's instruction, but whoever heeds reproof, that is, takes the instruction to heart.

  175. That person is prudent.

  176. We can quickly see a connection between verse 5 and verse 20, because we're talking about parents here.

  177. It says,

  178. A wise son makes a glad father, but a foolish man despises his mother.

  179. This isn't a verse that's not a good person.

  180. This isn't a verse that's talking about, you know, if my kid's good, he's mine, and if the kid's bad, he's mom's.

  181. This is talking about godly parents.

  182. And so wisdom that comes from godly parents, the source of that is God's word.

  183. And a fool does not want those words of wisdom.

  184. Verse 12 says,

  185. A scoffer, a fool, does not like to be reproved or corrected.

  186. He will not go to the wise.

  187. So here we see just a continuation of that.

  188. That son or that daughter who does not want to hear godly advice from a godly parent or from another godly influence.

  189. They do not want it.

  190. They won't go to the wise person because they don't want that wisdom in their life.

  191. Learning to be wise means not just learning facts, but it's receiving correction.

  192. And that receiving correction takes humility.

  193. So are you open to wise instruction?

  194. It's no surprise that there's a connection between our words and our heart.

  195. I think we all know that.

  196. A lot of times what we're feeling comes out.

  197. Verse 7 points this out.

  198. It says,

  199. The lips of the wise spread or disperse knowledge, not so the hearts of fools.

  200. In verse 2 we saw how the tongue or the words of the wise commends and makes knowledge look desirable.

  201. Here we see something a little different.

  202. They are able to spread or give out knowledge, the wise are, because it's in their heart.

  203. But you can't disperse something that you don't have.

  204. You can't disperse wisdom if you have foolishness in your heart.

  205. Foolish hearts spread foolish words.

  206. So what is in your heart comes out in your words and in your actions.

  207. Proverbs 23 verse 7 says,

    Proverbs 23:7

  208. For as he thinketh in his heart, so is he.

  209. So are you able, from the stance of your heart, are you able to give wise instruction?

  210. Along with these verses dealing with our speech, we also have some verses of warning and judgment.

  211. We cannot properly lead ourselves and others toward God if we don't know what God desires.

  212. And if we don't know the points of correction along the way when we're not doing that.

  213. So verse 3 is the first one that we come across.

  214. It says this in verse 3,

  215. The eyes of the Lord are in every place, keeping watch on the evil and the good.

  216. Just a few things from this verse I wanted to point out.

  217. And the first one is how the word Lord is in all capitals.

  218. This means God's covenant name Yahweh.

  219. Expressing God in his fullness as sovereign Lord and creator of all.

  220. And this verse is saying he hates the sacrifices of the wicked,

  221. but the prayer of the upright is acceptable to him.

  222. Going back to verse 3.

  223. Sorry, that was supposed to be down a little bit.

  224. Going back to verse 3.

  225. The eyes of the Lord are in every place, keeping watch on the evil and the good.

  226. Notice here that it's not actions that God is watching, but it is the people.

  227. It's the good people.

  228. It's the evil people.

  229. Those are the ones God is watching.

  230. If I were watching good people and evil people, and I wrote this verse,

  231. if I said that my eyes were on them,

  232. I would probably say that my eyes are on every place.

  233. But we notice here that it says the eyes of the Lord are in every place.

  234. And I think there's something in that.

  235. The idea being that there is a deeper seeing that is going on.

  236. It's more than just seeing.

  237. It's a fully knowing what is happening.

  238. It's kind of like if you've ever watched a TV show that was muted.

  239. You see everything, right?

  240. You can guess what they're saying a little bit.

  241. You can kind of pick up part of the story, but you miss a lot of what's happening.

  242. Not so with God.

  243. He sees everything.

  244. He knows completely.

  245. Brothers and sisters, that should put us on alert this morning.

  246. We have a God who cares about how we talk to one another.

  247. He cares about how we love one another.

  248. And he holds us accountable for that.

  249. Accountable not just for the words we say, but the hard attitude behind it.

  250. Verse 8 says,

  251. The sacrifice of the wicked is an abomination to the Lord,

  252. but the prayer of the upright is acceptable to him.

  253. This goes back to verse 3 that we were talking about.

  254. This Lord that sees everything.

  255. That's the same Lord that finds the sacrifice of wicked,

  256. of the wicked and abomination.

  257. The mere act of offering sacrifice,

  258. apart from having a life that is righteous

  259. and set aside for God,

  260. is not acceptable to him.

  261. Hear these verses from Isaiah chapter 1.

    Isaiah 1 chapter mention

  262. It's verses 14 through 17.

  263. This is God speaking.

  264. Your new moons and your appointed feast,

  265. my soul hates.

  266. They have become a burden to me.

  267. I am weary of bearing them.

  268. When you spread out your hands,

  269. I will hide my eyes from you.

  270. Even though you make many prayers,

  271. I will not listen.

  272. Your hands are full of blood.

  273. Wash yourselves.

  274. Make yourselves clean.

  275. Remove the evil from your deeds from before my eyes.

  276. Cease to do evil.

  277. Learn to do good.

  278. Seek justice.

  279. Correct oppression.

  280. Bring justice to the fatherless.

  281. Plead the widow's cause.

  282. We must turn from our evil

  283. and repent before our prayers are accepted

  284. by a holy and perfect God.

  285. Verse 9 says,

  286. Jesus said in Matthew 17,

  287. You hypocrites, speaking to the Pharisees,

  288. Well did Isaiah prophesy of you when he said,

  289. This people honors me with their lips,

  290. but their heart is far from me.

  291. If our hearts are turned from God,

  292. then we can't pursue him.

  293. Righteousness can't be our goal

  294. if we are going the opposite or the wrong direction.

  295. So we want to lead in the direction of uprighteousness,

  296. not in foolishness and away from God.

  297. Because God hears our prayers.

  298. We want to strive after righteousness

  299. because it pleases God to do so.

  300. And we know that God loves those who pursue righteousness.

  301. Not perfection.

  302. I'm not saying we pursue perfection,

  303. but we pursue what is right and good in the eyes of God.

  304. Thinking back to verse 3,

  305. where God sees and knows what is happening.

  306. God is more concerned about the person and their heart

  307. than he is about the sacrifices and their actions.

  308. He's concerned more about that

  309. than our prayers and our sacrifices

  310. if our hearts are not on him.

  311. Now don't get me wrong.

  312. Prayer is important.

  313. I'm not saying that it isn't.

  314. And I'm not saying that our sacrifices to God,

  315. that is the giving of our time

  316. and our resources and money.

  317. All that is important.

  318. But it has to start with our heart.

  319. If our heart is far from God,

  320. then all and everything that we do

  321. is abomination to the Lord.

  322. Verse 11 says,

  323. Sheol and Abaddon,

  324. death and destruction,

  325. lie open before the Lord.

  326. How much more the hearts of the children of men.

  327. So death and destruction are not hidden from God.

  328. These are things that are mysteries to us.

  329. We don't know about death.

  330. We know what it is to die.

  331. We don't know anything after that

  332. except for what we learned from the word.

  333. It is unknown to us.

  334. It is a mystery to us,

  335. but it is not a mystery to God.

  336. He knows them and uses them for his purposes.

  337. How much more does he know our hearts?

  338. We also see another warning in verse 10.

  339. It says,

  340. There is severe discipline for him who forsakes the way.

  341. For the person who leaves or departs from God's path,

  342. out of love and mercy,

  343. God will discipline them and bring them back.

  344. For the purpose of bringing them back

  345. and restoring joy,

  346. because he loves them.

  347. And for the person who pushes back harder

  348. and does not want to turn from his ways,

  349. it says,

  350. Whoever hates reproof will die.

  351. We know this.

  352. We can see examples of this all the time,

  353. where rules are where they are for a purpose,

  354. or someone is warned about something

  355. and they do not change,

  356. has an effect.

  357. Right?

  358. It catches up to a person.

  359. The person who does not turn back.

  360. The person who hates correction.

  361. And they remain on the course away from God.

  362. We know the end result of that is hell.

  363. Man's ways lead away from God.

  364. God's ways,

  365. only available to us through Jesus,

  366. brings us back to him.

  367. John 14, 6 says,

  368. Jesus said to him,

  369. I am the way,

  370. I am the truth,

  371. and the life.

  372. No one comes to the Father except through me.

  373. We also see a couple of verses of correction

  374. in verses 24 and 25 and 26.

  375. So we'll look at those.

  376. Verse 24 says,

  377. The path of life leads upward for the prudent.

  378. The prudent, that is the wise person

  379. who is concerned about their future.

  380. They care about that path of life

  381. because they care about their future.

  382. The path leads upward

  383. that he may turn from shield or from death.

  384. Such a person seeks to be wise.

  385. The further they are towards wisdom,

  386. the further they are away from foolishness.

  387. I mentioned earlier that

  388. the leading of ourselves,

  389. the path that we're on,

  390. what we do,

  391. it also affects others.

  392. If we're leading towards God or not,

  393. that is if we're following him,

  394. others are affected by that.

  395. There's a few verses actually in this chapter

  396. that talk about that.

  397. Look at verse 25.

  398. It says,

  399. The Lord tears down the house of the proud

  400. but maintains the widow's boundaries.

  401. The proud are at odds with God.

  402. 1 Peter 5.5 says,

  403. God opposes the proud.

  404. Psalm 147.6 says,

  405. The Lord lifts up the humble.

  406. He casts the wicked to the ground.

  407. So in this verse,

  408. we see how God tears down

  409. those who are proud.

  410. In this verse,

  411. the widow is an example

  412. of the humble person.

  413. A widow in the Old Testament

  414. is someone who had no one left

  415. to protect her

  416. or to secure her land.

  417. And so she depended on God.

  418. God maintained the widow's boundaries,

  419. her possessions, her land.

  420. So are you protected

  421. where you live

  422. as you live humbly for God?

  423. Or do you live in pride

  424. and at odds with God?

  425. Do others see damaging pride

  426. by how you live?

  427. Or do they find strength

  428. in your humility?

  429. Verse 6 says,

  430. In the house of the righteous

  431. there is much treasure,

  432. but trouble befalls

  433. the income of the wicked.

  434. Now, the income of the wicked

  435. here refers not only to

  436. the methods used to get rich

  437. or to bring that income in,

  438. speaking of dishonesty and bribery,

  439. but there's also the desire

  440. for more of it,

  441. the desire for more money

  442. and possessions.

  443. We pick up on this connection

  444. by looking at verse 27.

  445. It says,

  446. Whoever is greedy

  447. for unjust gain

  448. troubles his household,

  449. but he who hates bribes

  450. will live.

  451. Trouble comes to the house

  452. where there is dishonesty

  453. and greed.

  454. But for the house

  455. of the righteous

  456. there is freedom.

  457. It says,

  458. There is much treasure,

  459. meaning there is satisfaction

  460. and enjoyment

  461. that abounds.

  462. Why?

  463. Because the freedom

  464. in living

  465. honestly

  466. and righteously.

  467. There is contentment

  468. in following God

  469. and trusting Him

  470. and not seeking after

  471. how you can gain things

  472. by your own doing.

  473. 1 Timothy 6,

  474. 6 and 7

  475. says this,

  476. But godliness

  477. with contentment

  478. is great gain,

  479. for we brought nothing

  480. into the world

  481. and we cannot take anything

  482. out of the world.

  483. So how is your house?

  484. Maybe a house,

  485. an apartment,

  486. a condo,

  487. a shared space,

  488. whatever it is,

  489. are those around you

  490. in your house

  491. affected negatively

  492. through your pride?

  493. Maybe through

  494. your dishonesty

  495. or your desire

  496. for more of the world?

  497. Or are they affected

  498. in a good way

  499. through your humility,

  500. through your righteousness,

  501. through your honesty?

  502. Again,

  503. goes back to

  504. like reading a review.

  505. It affects people

  506. what they read.

  507. It affects people

  508. how you live.

  509. Here are some verses

  510. that talk about,

  511. that look into our heart.

  512. So as we,

  513. let's do,

  514. um,

  515. how is your heart?

  516. Like,

  517. the words

  518. that you say,

  519. they come out

  520. of the stance

  521. of your heart.

  522. How do they affect others?

  523. Look at verse 13.

  524. It says,

  525. a glad heart

  526. makes a cheerful face,

  527. but by sorrow of heart

  528. the spirit is crushed.

  529. By sorrow of heart,

  530. and know at times,

  531. because we live

  532. in a fallen world,

  533. we are going to have

  534. sorrow of heart

  535. and spirit

  536. that feels crushed.

  537. we're going to have

  538. things that happen

  539. in our life.

  540. Even as Christians,

  541. it doesn't mean

  542. life is great.

  543. We're going to have

  544. hard times,

  545. and we,

  546. our fear,

  547. our spirit

  548. will feel crushed.

  549. But outside of those times,

  550. do you have

  551. a cheerful face?

  552. Do you have a heart

  553. that is glad,

  554. generally glad,

  555. overall,

  556. happy and content

  557. in the Lord?

  558. verses 14 and 15

  559. say,

  560. the heart of him

  561. who has understanding

  562. seeks knowledge,

  563. but the mouths of fools

  564. feed on folly.

  565. All the days of the afflicted

  566. are evil,

  567. but the cheerful of heart

  568. has a continual feast.

  569. The person having

  570. a heart of understanding

  571. and wanting to grow

  572. in wisdom,

  573. they will seek

  574. after more of it.

  575. Fools, however,

  576. will feed on

  577. more foolishness.

  578. So,

  579. a happy heart

  580. accompanies that person

  581. whose understanding

  582. and desire

  583. is to seek

  584. more knowledge.

  585. There's a continual

  586. feast of delight

  587. and contentment

  588. because of where

  589. their focus is.

  590. Their focus is not

  591. on foolishness,

  592. on things that don't matter.

  593. Their focus is on

  594. wisdom

  595. and righteousness.

  596. Our path to wisdom

  597. should bring us joy.

  598. It should bring us

  599. contentment in God.

  600. So,

  601. if we find that

  602. the path we're on

  603. is not bringing us

  604. closer to God,

  605. is not bringing us

  606. more joy

  607. and contentment,

  608. then we need to

  609. pause

  610. and analyze

  611. the path that we're on

  612. because something

  613. is out of whack.

  614. whether God chooses

  615. to bless you

  616. with wealth

  617. or not,

  618. the contentment

  619. in life

  620. with whatever

  621. our circumstances

  622. are should be

  623. one of our attributes.

  624. An attribute

  625. of a Christian

  626. should be contentment.

  627. Why?

  628. Because

  629. their foundation

  630. is Jesus Christ.

  631. Their eternity

  632. is heaven.

  633. Verse 16 says,

  634. Better is a little

  635. with the fear

  636. of the Lord

  637. than great treasure

  638. and trouble with it.

  639. It is more important

  640. to live

  641. with the proper fear

  642. of the Lord

  643. than to have anything else.

  644. Even if it means

  645. to have very little

  646. compared to having

  647. a great abundance,

  648. the trouble

  649. with having great treasure

  650. is that it easily

  651. moves our dependence

  652. away from God

  653. and onto

  654. that abundance,

  655. that great treasure.

  656. and to not have

  657. the fear

  658. of the Lord

  659. puts us on the path

  660. to foolishness.

  661. That brings us

  662. to our last set

  663. of verses.

  664. Let's look at

  665. verse 30

  666. through 33.

  667. The light of the eyes

  668. rejoices the heart

  669. and good news

  670. refreshes the bones.

  671. We spoke about this

  672. in another sermon,

  673. but the eyes

  674. are like a lamp

  675. to the whole body.

  676. So when the eyes

  677. see something

  678. to be happy about,

  679. that could be

  680. seeing a close friend

  681. or getting a good report,

  682. finishing a project

  683. that you've been waiting on,

  684. that makes the heart glad.

  685. And good news

  686. refreshes the bones.

  687. Another translation

  688. says good news

  689. makes the bones fat,

  690. meaning that

  691. to receive good news

  692. is healthy for us.

  693. The cheer

  694. that our spirit

  695. receives from that

  696. is like a feast

  697. that is spread

  698. before us

  699. and it fattens us.

  700. It makes us

  701. healthy

  702. in our bones.

  703. We find the ultimate

  704. example

  705. of this

  706. in the gospel.

  707. The news that Jesus

  708. died on the cross

  709. for our sins

  710. so that we can

  711. have salvation

  712. so that we,

  713. through our trust

  714. in Jesus,

  715. can have forgiveness

  716. and relationship

  717. with God.

  718. Without question,

  719. that is,

  720. and will always be

  721. the ultimate news

  722. that lightens

  723. our eyes.

  724. It rejoices

  725. our heart

  726. and refreshes

  727. our bones.

  728. Nothing will be able

  729. to do that

  730. on any level

  731. like the gospel,

  732. the saving gospel

  733. of Jesus Christ.

  734. It provides

  735. that healing

  736. and salvation

  737. for eternity.

  738. Verse 31 says,

  739. The ear that listens

  740. to life-giving reproof

  741. will dwell among

  742. the wise.

  743. The gospel

  744. is that life-giving

  745. reproof.

  746. If you were

  747. not a believer

  748. this morning,

  749. I want to encourage

  750. you to hear

  751. God's instruction.

  752. Do not close

  753. yourself to this

  754. good news,

  755. this life-giving,

  756. ultimate good news.

  757. Because without it,

  758. there is no dwelling

  759. with the wise

  760. that he talks about here.

  761. That is,

  762. the righteous

  763. that are in heaven.

  764. Jesus said

  765. in Mark 4, 9,

  766. He who has ears,

  767. let him hear.

  768. Don't not hear

  769. this loving word

  770. from the Lord

  771. to bring good news

  772. that makes your bones

  773. fat,

  774. that makes them

  775. healthy for eternity.

  776. Maybe you are

  777. a believer

  778. this morning.

  779. Have you

  780. been listening

  781. to God?

  782. Or have you

  783. been listening

  784. to yourself?

  785. Are your ears

  786. open

  787. to His guidance?

  788. The next verse,

  789. verse 32,

  790. says this,

  791. Whoever ignores

  792. instruction

  793. despises himself,

  794. but he who

  795. listens to reproof

  796. gains intelligence.

  797. Do you listen

  798. to godly instruction

  799. and follow it?

  800. When your words

  801. are off the mark

  802. and your heart

  803. is drifting

  804. from God

  805. and the Holy Spirit

  806. that's speaking

  807. to you

  808. that you're

  809. in the wrong,

  810. do you hear

  811. that correction?

  812. Or do you

  813. respond like

  814. the fool

  815. and you ignore

  816. it because you

  817. don't want to

  818. hear it?

  819. You're content

  820. in your foolishness.

  821. There are times

  822. when we will

  823. sin.

  824. It's those times

  825. where it's easy

  826. to start down

  827. a path

  828. that takes us

  829. towards foolishness.

  830. We become

  831. wrapped in

  832. ourselves

  833. and we

  834. begin to

  835. turn from

  836. God.

  837. It is then

  838. that we need

  839. to listen

  840. to that

  841. spirit

  842. inside.

  843. The words

  844. of correction

  845. from someone

  846. else

  847. or from

  848. the word

  849. of God

  850. if we're

  851. open to

  852. that at

  853. that point.

  854. But we

  855. need to

  856. be able

  857. to listen

  858. to that

  859. correction.

  860. We need

  861. to humble

  862. ourselves

  863. and repent.

  864. Turn back

  865. to the one

  866. who loves

  867. you.

  868. The one

  869. that died

  870. for you

  871. and the one

  872. who has

  873. plans for

  874. you.

  875. The last

  876. verse,

  877. verse 33,

  878. says this,

  879. The fear

  880. of the

  881. Lord is

  882. instruction

  883. and wisdom

  884. and humility

  885. comes before

  886. honor.

  887. To know

  888. the Lord,

  889. to have

  890. the proper

  891. reverence

  892. and awe

  893. for who

  894. he is

  895. and to

  896. live in

  897. that light

  898. that is

  899. wisdom.

  900. That is

  901. true fear

  902. of the

  903. Lord and

  904. living

  905. according

  906. to it.

  907. An

  908. important

  909. aspect of

  910. that fear

  911. of the

  912. Lord is

  913. humility.

  914. when we

  915. realize

  916. and we

  917. accept

  918. who we

  919. are as

  920. sinners,

  921. given this

  922. free gift

  923. of salvation

  924. by a

  925. holy and

  926. just God,

  927. then we

  928. are humbled.

  929. We should

  930. be humbled.

  931. And the

  932. honor of

  933. being a

  934. child of

  935. God

  936. comes only

  937. after we

  938. humble

  939. ourselves

  940. as sinners

  941. before him.

  942. So today,

  943. as you think

  944. about how

  945. you lead

  946. with your

  947. words

  948. and your

  949. heart,

  950. do it

  951. not for

  952. your

  953. salvation,

  954. do it

  955. because of

  956. your

  957. salvation.

  958. Jesus,

  959. the Son

  960. of God,

  961. came as

  962. the Word

  963. and wisdom

  964. of God.

  965. So as we

  966. think about

  967. how we

  968. use our

  969. words,

  970. we think

  971. about how

  972. Jesus was

  973. the ultimate

  974. Word.

  975. He led

  976. with words

  977. of comfort

  978. and healing.

  979. He spoke

  980. wisdom and

  981. kindness.

  982. He taught,

  983. He exhorted,

  984. He loved,

  985. He served

  986. humbly and

  987. He loved

  988. greatly.

  989. It is

  990. because of

  991. His leading

  992. that we

  993. have hope,

  994. a purpose

  995. in Christ

  996. and for

  997. Christ.

  998. So this

  999. morning,

  1000. let us

  1001. lead

  1002. ourselves

  1003. and let

  1004. us lead

  1005. others

  1006. in that

  1007. hope.

  1008. You take a

  1009. couple minutes

  1010. just to

  1011. think about

  1012. that thought

  1013. of how you

  1014. lead with

  1015. your words

  1016. and your

  1017. heart

  1018. and how

  1019. you serve

  1020. as a

  1021. review

  1022. pointing to

  1023. God,

  1024. pointing to

  1025. the hope

  1026. of Christ.

  1027. How do

  1028. others read

  1029. that review

  1030. and is it

  1031. helpful to

  1032. them?

  1033. operation

  1034. living

  1035. to

  1036. tumble

  1037. to

  1038. last

  1039. time

  1040. and

  1041. to

  1042. to

  1043. .

  1044. Probably

  1045. something

  1046. here

  1047. is
