  1. Now is the time for the reading and preaching of God's Word, and it's my joy and honor to introduce my friend Eric Raymond.

  2. Eric is quite an accomplished pastor.

  3. He's authored several books, including one entitled Chasing Contentment, Trusting God in a Discontented Age.

  4. And he writes regularly for blogs and websites that I follow, like Nine Marks, Gospel Coalition.

  5. He has a blog entitled Ordinary Pastor that's hosted by the Gospel Coalition website.

  6. He is actually a Massachusetts native but moved to Nebraska because he was with the Air Force and came back to serve as the lead pastor of Redeemer Fellowship Church in Watertown.

  7. I don't know how he finds the time for all the stuff he does, especially with six children, right?

  8. Undoubtedly, he has an excellent helper in his wife, Christy, who's also here with him.

  9. It's an honor to meet you, and I'm glad that you guys could all join us.

  10. But more than any of those things that I've just mentioned, what impresses me the most about Eric is he's a faithful pastor.

  11. He's a faithful, humble, local church pastor, as you can tell from his blog title, Ordinary Pastor.

  12. And he's brought together a group of pastors in the area, and we're calling it the Charles River Pastors Network.

  13. And with his leadership, that's been outside of our local church leadership team.

  14. That's been the single most encouraging group that I've been a part of, extra local, but in this area.

  15. So I'm really grateful for his leadership in that and for his example.

  16. And so I'm really excited for you guys to meet him, to hear from him.

  17. I'm really excited to hear from you, Mike.

  18. So thank you, Eric.

  19. Please come up and preach for us.

  20. Thank you.

  21. Well, thank you very much, Sean.

  22. It's certainly a privilege to be with you guys tonight.

  23. Thank you for the opportunity, and we rejoice with you at the birth of your new baby.

  24. We're grateful to God for his blessing.

  25. And I just want to, on behalf of Redeemer Fellowship Church in Watertown, just want to say we are grateful for you and your witness as a church.

  26. We pray for you guys regularly.

  27. And we're just so thankful for the fellowship in the gospel that we have together as brothers and sisters of the Lord Jesus Christ.

  28. Let's go ahead and turn in our Bibles to Psalm 94, the 94th Psalm.

  29. And this will be the scripture reading for tonight.

  30. I want to read the whole Psalm, and we're going to focus on one verse mainly tonight, and that is verse 19.

  31. So if you go ahead and turn to Psalm 94.

  32. I want to read the whole Psalm, and then pray, and then we'll consider God's word together.

  33. Let's hear God's word.

  34. O Lord, God of vengeance.

  35. O God of vengeance, shine forth.

  36. Rise up, O judge of the earth.

  37. Repay to the proud what they deserve.

  38. O Lord, how long shall the wicked, how long shall the wicked exult?

  39. They pour out their arrogant words.

  40. All the evildoers boast.

  41. They crush your people, O Lord, and afflict your heritage.

  42. They kill the widow and the sojourner, and murder the fatherless.

  43. And they say, the Lord does not see.

  44. The God of Jacob does not perceive.

  45. Understand, O dullest of the people.

  46. Fools, when will you be wise?

  47. He who planted the ear, does he not hear?

  48. He who formed the eye, does he not see?

  49. He who disciplines the nations, does he not rebuke?

  50. He who teaches man knowledge, the Lord knows the thoughts of man.

  51. They are but a breath.

  52. Blessed is the man whom you discipline, O Lord,

  53. and whom you teach out of your law,

  54. to give him rest from days of trouble,

  55. until a pit is dug for the wicked.

  56. For the Lord will not forsake his people.

  57. He will not abandon his heritage.

  58. For justice will return to the righteous,

  59. and all the upright in heart will follow it.

  60. Who rises up for me against the wicked?

  61. Who stands up for me against evildoers?

  62. If the Lord had not been my help,

  63. my soul would have soon lived in the land of silence.

  64. When I thought, my foot slips,

  65. your steadfast love, O Lord, held me up.

  66. When the cares of my heart are many,

  67. your consolations cheer my soul.

  68. Can wicked rulers be allied with you,

  69. those who frame injustice by statute?

  70. They band together against the life of the righteous

  71. and condemn the innocent to death.

  72. But the Lord has become my stronghold,

  73. and my God, the rock of my refuge.

  74. He will bring back on them their iniquity

  75. and wipe them out for their wickedness.

  76. The Lord, our God, will wipe them out.

  77. This is the word of God.

  78. Let's pray.

  79. Our Father, it is our prayer tonight

  80. that you would take the reading of this word

  81. and bless it to our ears,

  82. and to our hearts, and to our lives.

  83. Help us now, we pray, to hear this word,

  84. hear the scriptures,

  85. for they are life to us.

  86. We pray in Jesus' name.

  87. Amen.

  88. As I mentioned, I want to focus on verse 19.

  89. What we have in this verse here

  90. is an abundance of cares

  91. and sufficient consolation from God.

  92. We have a psalm here

  93. where the psalmist is enduring

  94. some season of difficulty.

  95. We're not sure precisely what it is.

  96. It doesn't lay it out for us.

  97. But we can be sure that the opposition

  98. was directed at him personally

  99. and in large part because of his faith in God.

  100. That's this contrast between the wicked

  101. and the righteous.

  102. And really, what's helpful about this psalm

  103. is that the precise circumstances

  104. are not important for us to nail down,

  105. to take application from it.

  106. But rather, we can see how God helps him

  107. amid his difficulty.

  108. And what we'll see tonight,

  109. really as our main point,

  110. is that God consoles his children

  111. amidst swelling concerns.

  112. God consoles his children

  113. amidst their swelling concerns.

  114. And we see it in verse 19.

  115. When the cares of my heart are many,

  116. your consolations cheer my soul.

  117. So it's really three progressions for us

  118. in seasons of uncertainty.

  119. And these progressions begin with the problem.

  120. The overwhelming concerns.

  121. The prescription,

  122. divine consolations.

  123. And the prognosis,

  124. personal contentment.

  125. So we'll see those three tonight.

  126. First, the problem,

  127. overwhelming concerns.

  128. We see in verse 19,

  129. he says,

  130. when the cares of my heart are many,

  131. this word that's rendered cares

  132. could be worries.

  133. So he could be saying,

  134. the worries of my heart are many.

  135. Or the anxious thoughts of my heart are many.

  136. You get the idea.

  137. It's what's heavy upon his mind.

  138. It's what he wakes up thinking about.

  139. What he goes to bed thinking about.

  140. What occupies his mind

  141. as his brain goes into neutral.

  142. It's a disquieting concern

  143. that he can't get off of his mind.

  144. And for the psalmist,

  145. likely there's some degree of personal attacks

  146. that he's dealing with.

  147. But really,

  148. what issue he's facing

  149. that really exacerbates the problem

  150. is not primarily the issue

  151. that he's facing with people,

  152. but rather the issue

  153. that he perceives

  154. that God is not doing anything about it.

  155. What really seems to vex him

  156. is that he wants to see God act

  157. in the midst of it.

  158. And the lack of action,

  159. according to his perception,

  160. causes him to be discouraged

  161. and even have anxiety multiplied.

  162. And that's what ends up tying him in knots.

  163. We see in the first seven verses

  164. where he's making the case for God to act.

  165. He's petitioning God.

  166. He's calling him a God of vengeance.

  167. And he's asking him to judge

  168. and to deal with those who are proud.

  169. In verses one through three,

  170. he's basically saying,

  171. God, you're a judge

  172. who punishes those who do wrong.

  173. And in then verses four through seven,

  174. he's laying out the case for them

  175. and their need for punishment.

  176. He's talking about arrogant words,

  177. evildoers,

  178. crushing the people,

  179. afflicting your heritage.

  180. They're attacking those who you love.

  181. They kill the widow.

  182. They murder the fatherless.

  183. And they even mock God

  184. to say that the God of Jacob

  185. does not see.

  186. This is brutal stuff.

  187. The psalmist's question is,

  188. why isn't God doing anything?

  189. There's many concerns.

  190. Notice even the plural.

  191. When the cares of my heart are many.

  192. Multiple cares, many.

  193. Swelling concerns.

  194. I wonder if you can relate to the psalmist.

  195. Many concerns.

  196. Do you have any concerns?

  197. Perhaps a concern to go with

  198. every hour or every minute of the day.

  199. Swelling concerns,

  200. like bees buzzing around the head.

  201. Insects that won't leave you alone.

  202. These concerns that just seem to weigh on you.

  203. Do you find it difficult

  204. to collect your thoughts

  205. and process through burdens?

  206. Do you have any concerns tonight?

  207. Do you have anxieties and fears?

  208. Kind of expanding fears,

  209. expanding anxieties,

  210. crowding together.

  211. Very difficult to subdue and rule them.

  212. They just dominate.

  213. We know really across the world right now,

  214. with COVID-19,

  215. there's swelling fears.

  216. Constant concerns.

  217. There's a spread of a virus.

  218. There's health for yourself

  219. and for others.

  220. We're constantly hit with numbers

  221. of cases and deaths,

  222. spread, rates, hospitalizations.

  223. We're always reminded of the stats.

  224. And even the news anchors

  225. and the news articles

  226. and the websites

  227. just seem to,

  228. if you might be not having an anxious day,

  229. seem to just throw gasoline on the fire

  230. and cause it even to fan into a flame

  231. of more anxiety and more concern.

  232. There's economic impact of the virus.

  233. There's political concerns

  234. as a result of it.

  235. There's anxiety multiplying

  236. throughout our time.

  237. That's just one issue

  238. that happens to be served up to us

  239. right now

  240. that causes

  241. a collective,

  242. global swelling of concerns.

  243. But then even in our lives,

  244. I've been in pastoral ministry

  245. to know that

  246. in most churches,

  247. there's relationship issues

  248. even within the church

  249. and within extended family

  250. and friends in workplace.

  251. There's relationship burdens

  252. that we have.

  253. We have friends that have suffered.

  254. We have friendships

  255. that have suffered.

  256. We have people that have died.

  257. Some have died

  258. in the midst of this COVID time.

  259. And it's very difficult

  260. for people to grieve

  261. and say goodbye

  262. to family and loved ones.

  263. There's wayward children

  264. who grow up believing

  265. and then walk away

  266. from the faith.

  267. Then there's personal concerns.

  268. Your future,

  269. school,

  270. work,

  271. marriage,

  272. where the church is going to meet.

  273. When is it going to go back to normal?

  274. All of the things that we want.

  275. These swelling concerns

  276. that come up.

  277. And then personal depression,

  278. anxiety,

  279. bitterness over the past,

  280. uncertainty over the future.

  281. And then there's the spiritual concern.

  282. Guilt over personal sin.

  283. What do I do with my sin?

  284. Is God angry?

  285. What about these evil thoughts

  286. in my mind

  287. or impure thoughts

  288. that circle through the mind

  289. like gnats?

  290. Or anger or frustration

  291. or doubts about God?

  292. Or feeling personally

  293. far from God

  294. like God is withdrawn?

  295. Hard time reconciling

  296. what's going on in the world

  297. with what we read in the Bible.

  298. These are just examples

  299. of swelling concerns

  300. that could fill out

  301. our personal prayer list

  302. before the Lord.

  303. And as of yet,

  304. we're not intending

  305. to solve the problem.

  306. We're just trying to show

  307. the commonness

  308. of swelling concerns

  309. at this point.

  310. When the concerns

  311. of our heart are many,

  312. what do we do?

  313. Well, that's the problem.

  314. Overwhelming concerns.

  315. Now, what do we do about it?

  316. That's the prescription.

  317. The verse says,

  318. when the cares of my heart

  319. are many,

  320. the overwhelming concerns,

  321. what is the prescription?

  322. It is divine consolations

  323. or sacred care.

  324. This is the prescription.

  325. If you have swelling concerns,

  326. according to the psalmist,

  327. it's divine consolations.

  328. We need God

  329. to care for us.

  330. We're intended to see

  331. the medicine

  332. that handles

  333. the sickness.

  334. You see how it's

  335. side by side

  336. in verse 19.

  337. Cares of my heart,

  338. your consolations.

  339. Many cares,

  340. many consolations.

  341. It's as if

  342. there is a consolation

  343. in God

  344. for every one

  345. of our swelling concerns.

  346. This is an outstanding statement.

  347. It's a bold statement

  348. that God is able

  349. to console

  350. the cares

  351. of every one

  352. of his children.

  353. Well, think about this.

  354. The psalmist

  355. is endeavoring

  356. in this psalm

  357. to understand

  358. his circumstances

  359. in light

  360. of God's character.

  361. See, this is a problem

  362. we face often.

  363. So often

  364. when we get into

  365. this analysis

  366. of swelling concerns,

  367. we're dealing

  368. with the concerns

  369. of our circumstances

  370. or things

  371. that are in our mind,

  372. we look through

  373. the lens

  374. of our circumstance

  375. and we see

  376. God's character.

  377. And we say,

  378. based upon what

  379. I'm dealing with,

  380. God must be like this.

  381. So for example,

  382. if things are difficult,

  383. we might feel like

  384. God doesn't love us

  385. because we expect

  386. things to be easy.

  387. So through our circumstances,

  388. we look at God's character.

  389. But the Bible teaches us

  390. to look a different way.

  391. Instead of looking

  392. at our circumstances

  393. and making judgment

  394. upon God's character,

  395. we're to look at

  396. God's character

  397. and then judge

  398. our circumstances.

  399. So we should evaluate

  400. our circumstances

  401. in light of the character

  402. of God

  403. and not the other way around.

  404. Because when we do that,

  405. we're always going

  406. to have trouble.

  407. And that's what

  408. the psalmist teaches us

  409. here in the psalm.

  410. He goes to God

  411. as the source

  412. of His consolations,

  413. His character.

  414. And what are some things

  415. that we see about God?

  416. Well, in general,

  417. just in thinking about

  418. dealing with concerns,

  419. we need to be reminded

  420. of the fact

  421. that God is sovereign.

  422. God is in control.

  423. The coronavirus

  424. may have caught

  425. the World Health Organization

  426. by surprise,

  427. the CDC,

  428. the President

  429. of the United States,

  430. and many of us,

  431. but it didn't catch God

  432. by surprise.

  433. He's sovereign

  434. over everything.

  435. He's in absolute control.

  436. Psalm 115, verse 3,

    Psalms 115:3

  437. Our God is in the heavens.

  438. He does whatever

  439. He pleases.

  440. Isaiah 46.10,

  441. He declares the end

  442. from the beginning.

  443. From ancient times

  444. to things not done,

  445. saying,

  446. My counsel shall stand.

  447. I will accomplish

  448. my good purpose.

  449. But not only is God

  450. sovereign,

  451. but He's also good.

  452. I'm sure you see

  453. the need for God

  454. to be good

  455. as well as sovereign.

  456. If He was just sovereign,

  457. He might be

  458. a malevolent dictator.

  459. But He's sovereign

  460. and it's paired

  461. with His goodness.

  462. So His all power

  463. is combined

  464. with His all goodness.

  465. Psalm 119, verse 68

    Psalms 119:68

  466. says,

  467. You are good

  468. and you do good.

  469. Teach me your statutes.

  470. For you, O Lord,

  471. Psalm 86.5,

  472. are good and forgiving.

  473. O give thanks to the Lord

  474. for He is good.

  475. Psalm 107, verse 1.

    Psalms 107:1

  476. He's good

  477. and He's sovereign.

  478. He's also faithful.

  479. He keeps His word.

  480. If He makes a promise to you,

  481. you can take it to the bank.

  482. You can trust it.

  483. You can cling to it.

  484. Like an oak

  485. that will not be moved,

  486. God is trustworthy.

  487. Psalm 25, 8, 9.

  488. Good and upright

  489. is the Lord.

  490. Therefore He instructs

  491. sinners in the way.

  492. He leads the humble

  493. in what is right.

  494. We know the verse,

  495. Romans 8, 28,

  496. which says,

  497. We know that for those

  498. who love God,

  499. all things work together

  500. for good.

  501. For those who are called

  502. according to His purpose.

  503. So God is a God who cares.

  504. He's sovereign.

  505. He's good.

  506. He's faithful.

  507. And we need to remember

  508. these things

  509. when we are dealing

  510. with swelling concerns.

  511. And that's what we end up

  512. seeing from the text

  513. is that the psalmist,

  514. in the midst of his

  515. pleading to God,

  516. he finds himself instructed

  517. and he's grabbing a hold

  518. of God's character.

  519. And what he's clinging to

  520. is God's word,

  521. His work and His worth,

  522. who God is.

  523. And he makes it very personal.

  524. Did you notice when we read that

  525. how many personal pronouns

  526. he used?

  527. He's dealing with himself

  528. and the Lord.

  529. Look at verses 16-19.

  530. Who rises up for me

  531. against the wicked?

  532. Who stands up for me

  533. against the evildoers?

  534. If the Lord had not been my help,

  535. my soul would have lived

  536. in the land of silence.

  537. When I thought,

  538. my foot slips,

  539. your steadfast love

  540. held me up.

  541. When the cares of my heart

  542. are many,

  543. your consolations cheer

  544. my soul.

  545. Verse 22,

  546. but the Lord has become

  547. my refuge

  548. and the rock

  549. of my refuge,

  550. my stronghold.

  551. So we see that God's care,

  552. His goodness to His people.

  553. And He does it in surprising ways.

  554. These might be not ways

  555. that you would think about God

  556. caring for His people,

  557. but it is in fact

  558. what the psalmist grabs onto.

  559. In verse 12,

  560. He says,

  561. blessed is the man

  562. whom you discipline.

  563. An evidence of God's care

  564. for His people

  565. is discipline.

  566. I'm sure you can think

  567. of a passage

  568. in the New Testament

  569. that teaches this,

  570. Hebrews chapter 12,

    Hebrews 12 chapter mention

  571. that teaches us

  572. that God loves His children

  573. and He disciplines us.

  574. One of the ways

  575. that shows that He actually

  576. cares for us

  577. is He doesn't let us

  578. ruin our lives

  579. and the life of everybody else.

  580. He cares for us

  581. and disciplines us

  582. like a loving

  583. and faithful father.

  584. And that's what the psalmist

  585. is grabbing onto.

  586. Blessed is the man

  587. whom you discipline,

  588. even Himself.

  589. And then He teaches us.

  590. Verse 12,

  591. the second half of it,

  592. He teaches us

  593. out of His law.

  594. He teaches us

  595. from the Scriptures.

  596. These are good gifts of God.

  597. These consolations of God.

  598. Verse 13,

  599. He gives rest

  600. in the days of trouble.

  601. Those who are weary

  602. and heavy laden,

  603. He gives rest

  604. for their souls.

  605. Here in anticipation

  606. through the pages of Scripture,

  607. but ultimately

  608. in Jesus Christ

  609. He gives us rest.

  610. He's also faithful.

  611. Verse 14,

  612. you will not forsake

  613. His people.

  614. This is the consolation

  615. as He's dealing

  616. with this swelling concern.

  617. He's reminding Himself,

  618. God loves me.

  619. He disciplines me

  620. because I am a son.

  621. He teaches me His law.

  622. He gives me rest.

  623. He's faithful.

  624. He will not forsake me.

  625. Even verse 15,

  626. justice will return

  627. to the righteous.

  628. He will vindicate you.

  629. He's reminded

  630. that God's going to care

  631. for His people

  632. and absolutely vindicate Him.

  633. Verse 16,

  634. He defends His people.

  635. Who will rise up

  636. for me against the wicked?

  637. Who stands up for me

  638. against evildoers?

  639. The answer is God.

  640. God will do this.

  641. See how He's consoling Himself

  642. upon God.

  643. It's as if His soul

  644. is restless,

  645. but He's laying upon

  646. the pillow

  647. of God's character

  648. and He's being consoled

  649. and saying,

  650. this is who God is.

  651. this is what I need

  652. to remember.

  653. He's being brought back

  654. to health

  655. through His contemplation

  656. of God.

  657. Verse 17,

  658. If the Lord had not been

  659. my help,

  660. my soul would have lived

  661. in the land of silence.

  662. He's reminding Himself

  663. that God has helped him.

  664. Has God helped you?

  665. Has God been your defense?

  666. Has God proven

  667. His faithfulness to you?

  668. Has God given you rest?

  669. Has He taught you

  670. from His Word?

  671. Has He disciplined you?

  672. Then verse 18,

  673. He's the sustainer.

  674. When I thought my foot slips,

  675. your steadfast love,

  676. O Lord,

  677. held me up.

  678. We're basically like,

  679. we're like toddlers

  680. walking on ice.

  681. And God is like

  682. the loving Father

  683. with His arms

  684. underneath our arms

  685. helping us to move.

  686. We'll make a hash

  687. of everything.

  688. But God is faithful.

  689. And He's being reminded

  690. that I didn't slip

  691. not because I'm so good,

  692. but because God is so good.

  693. And because He's so faithful.

  694. The consolations

  695. of God

  696. are cheering His soul.

  697. And then verse 19,

  698. He's the consoler.

  699. When the cares of my heart

  700. are many,

  701. your consolations

  702. cheer my soul.

  703. They console

  704. like a crying baby

  705. that's been consoled

  706. and cared for

  707. by her mother.

  708. That is the psalmist.

  709. And even further,

  710. you have God's character.

  711. He's no ally of the wicked.

  712. He will never partner

  713. with lawless.

  714. It says in verse 20,

  715. the wicked rulers

  716. cannot be allied with you.

  717. He's a refuge

  718. for His people.

  719. Verse 22,

  720. the Lord has become

  721. my stronghold

  722. and the refuge.

  723. My refuge.

  724. And He's the judge.

  725. He is going to vindicate

  726. His character.

  727. Verse 23,

  728. He will bring back on them

  729. their iniquity.

  730. He will wipe them out

  731. for their wickedness.

  732. There are limitations

  733. to human justice,

  734. but there is no limitation

  735. to divine justice.

  736. Everyone will stand

  737. before Almighty God,

  738. the judge,

  739. and give an account.

  740. You can take it to the bank.

  741. He will vindicate

  742. His righteousness

  743. and judgment.

  744. You may not see them

  745. judged in this life,

  746. but you will see them

  747. judged in the age to come.

  748. And that should console you

  749. when you see evil people,

  750. wicked people,

  751. people who do great harm

  752. to people,

  753. oppressed and injustice

  754. and hurt people,

  755. go through life

  756. and seemingly get off

  757. scot-free.

  758. They don't get off scot-free.

  759. They will stand before

  760. an Almighty judge

  761. and that consoles

  762. the psalmist.

  763. It's not that God

  764. has forgotten.

  765. It's that God

  766. is forbearing.

  767. And there is a time

  768. coming when He will

  769. judge everyone.

  770. And that reminds them

  771. that God is good.

  772. So you have the blessing

  773. of divine care

  774. for Him individually.

  775. You have the blessing

  776. of God's character.

  777. And so in the midst

  778. of this whole season

  779. where He's working

  780. through this difficulty,

  781. He's reminded

  782. that the preciousness

  783. of God's consolations

  784. is not in the absence

  785. of difficulty

  786. but in the promises

  787. of God.

  788. See, listen,

  789. we oftentimes think

  790. that if things are difficult,

  791. that means that God

  792. is angry.

  793. Or if things are hard,

  794. that means things

  795. are not going the way

  796. they should be going.

  797. That's because we like

  798. things to go easy

  799. and we want things

  800. to be comfortable.

  801. But we just have to look

  802. at the Lord Jesus Christ

  803. and know that that's not

  804. the way it works

  805. even for the faithful.

  806. Oftentimes,

  807. difficulty comes to us

  808. for the purpose

  809. of strengthening us

  810. and making us

  811. more like Christ.

  812. To endure suffering well.

  813. The psalmist would not

  814. have known God's consolations

  815. if he had not felt

  816. the provocations

  817. around him

  818. and the roaring sea within.

  819. He's brought to be

  820. consoled by God

  821. because his soul

  822. is disquieted

  823. in the midst

  824. of difficulty.

  825. In other words,

  826. your comfort in this world

  827. is not primarily

  828. an easy path

  829. but a faithful God.

  830. Your consolation

  831. is God himself,

  832. not an easy life.

  833. If you're equating

  834. God's love for you

  835. with the absence

  836. of difficulty,

  837. you end up distorting

  838. what the Bible says

  839. about God

  840. and what it says

  841. about us.

  842. And if we do so,

  843. even subtly,

  844. we are nibbling

  845. at the hook

  846. of the prosperity gospel

  847. which teaches

  848. that this life

  849. is all about

  850. our personal prosperity

  851. and if we don't

  852. experience that,

  853. there's something wrong

  854. with God or us.

  855. That's a lie from hell.

  856. Look at Jesus

  857. and see what he went through.

  858. We know that he was

  859. the most faithful man

  860. who ever lives.

  861. Think of the hymn,

  862. Fear not,

  863. I am with thee,

  864. O be not dismayed,

  865. for I am thy God

  866. and will still give thee aid.

  867. I'll strengthen thee,

  868. help thee,

  869. and cause thee to stand

  870. upheld by my righteous,

  871. omnipotent hand.

  872. He's with us

  873. in the midst of it.

  874. It wasn't ease

  875. that made him smile,

  876. but God's preciousness

  877. to him.

  878. Remember Herod

  879. in Acts chapter 12,

    Acts 12 chapter mention

  880. he was scared

  881. sitting on his throne,

  882. but the apostle Paul

  883. and Silas

  884. were singing in prison.

  885. On the one hand,

  886. Herod had a guilty conscience

  887. and he was terrified.

  888. Paul and Silas

  889. had a clean conscience

  890. and they were rejoicing.

  891. It's all about your respect

  892. to God

  893. one way or the other.

  894. So what are some

  895. practical examples?

  896. Let's just think about this.

  897. How do you practically

  898. do this?

  899. How do you take this medicine

  900. on the day-to-day?

  901. How do you do that?

  902. We don't want to let anxiety

  903. or fear live rent-free

  904. in our head

  905. where we're just constantly

  906. going in this place

  907. of anxiety and fear

  908. and this constant

  909. swelling concerns

  910. of our hearts.

  911. We want to be the landlord

  912. of our mind.

  913. We want to take

  914. every thought captive

  915. as 2 Corinthians chapter 10

    2 Corinthians 10:5

  916. verse 5 says

  917. in obedience to Christ.

  918. Take every example

  919. you can think of

  920. and take it

  921. in obedience to Christ.

  922. Is there suffering?

  923. Take it into

  924. obedience with Christ.

  925. Think of this

  926. the whole COVID crisis.

  927. What is the root concern

  928. that everybody has?

  929. The root concern

  930. is not contracting

  931. the virus.

  932. The root concern

  933. why people are

  934. freaking out

  935. and so upset

  936. is people are scared

  937. to die.

  938. That's the issue.

  939. We're scared to die

  940. as a people.

  941. That's enslavement

  942. to a fear of death.

  943. Hebrews chapter 2

    Hebrews 2 chapter mention

  944. tells us that

  945. in verses 14 through 18.

  946. But the reality is

  947. for the Christian

  948. he says that he has

  949. freed us

  950. from slavery

  951. to a fear of death

  952. through Jesus Christ.

  953. Or anxiety

  954. about the future.

  955. We trust in God

  956. who's in control.

  957. Jesus tells his followers

  958. in Matthew chapter 6

    Matthew 6 chapter mention

  959. basically take a walk

  960. and look at the birds.

  961. see them neither

  962. laboring or toiling

  963. but they're fed.

  964. God knows how to

  965. take care of the birds.

  966. He can take care of you.

  967. Is it grief or sadness?

  968. Remember that this God

  969. according to Psalm 56

    Psalms 56:8

  970. verse 8

  971. he puts our tears

  972. in his bottle.

  973. He doesn't have a literal

  974. bottle where he catches

  975. our tears

  976. but it's a way of

  977. communicating that

  978. God is near to you

  979. in the midst of your sorrow

  980. gathering up your tears.

  981. He loves you

  982. and cares for you.

  983. This is our God.

  984. Is it doubt

  985. over your own acceptance

  986. with God?

  987. Is that the cause

  988. of the anxiety?

  989. Do you believe

  990. in the Lord Jesus Christ?

  991. Have you trusted in him?

  992. Is he your Savior

  993. and Lord?

  994. Then he's yours.

  995. He's your Lord.

  996. He's your Savior.

  997. If you trusted in him

  998. if you turned from your sin

  999. your sin is gone.

1000. And listen to Romans 8

1001. trying to nail this down

  1002. for us

  1003. verses 31 through 34

  1004. what shall we say

  1005. to these things?

1006. If God is for us

1007. who can be against us?

  1008. He who did not

  1009. spare his own son

1010. but gave him up for us all

  1011. how will he also

  1012. not with him

  1013. graciously give us

  1014. all things?

1015. Who will bring a charge

  1016. against God's elect?

1017. It is God who justifies.

  1018. Who's there to condemn?

  1019. Christ Jesus

1020. is the one who died.

  1021. More than that

  1022. who was raised?

1023. Who is at the right hand

  1024. interceding for us?

1025. As the hymn writer says

  1026. that soul

  1027. that on Jesus

  1028. has leaned for repose

  1029. I will not

  1030. I will not

  1031. desert to his foes.

  1032. That soul

  1033. though all hell

  1034. should endeavor to shake

  1035. I will never

  1036. no never

  1037. no never

  1038. forsake.

  1039. That soul

  1040. that leans upon Christ

  1041. will never forsake.

  1042. So isolate

  1043. the source fear

  1044. that is causing

  1045. the raging concerns

1046. and take the proper medicine

  1047. the divine consolation

  1048. find your rest

  1049. in God.

  1050. And then we see

  1051. the results

  1052. the prognosis

  1053. personal contentment.

  1054. You see swelling concerns

  1055. you see divine consolations

  1056. and then finally

  1057. personal contentment.

1058. What I think is so interesting here

1059. is that most of our concerns

1060. that you and I have

  1061. are external to us.

1062. We worry about all kinds of things

  1063. of natural life

  1064. and that's fine

  1065. that's right

1066. God cares about these things

  1067. but the solution

  1068. to dealing with

  1069. most of our concerns

  1070. is internal.

1071. God works from the inside out.

  1072. The medicine is applied

  1073. to the heart

  1074. the soul.

  1075. It's the storm

  1076. on the inside

  1077. that needs quieting

  1078. first

  1079. before the outside.

1080. Just like the sea of Galilee

  1081. Jesus speaks a word

  1082. of peace

  1083. to our hearts.

  1084. You see the phrase

  1085. in verse 19

1086. when the cares of my heart

  1087. are many

  1088. your consolations

  1089. cheer

  1090. my soul.

  1091. This word

  1092. cheer

  1093. means to delight

  1094. or have pleasure.

  1095. It expresses refreshment

  1096. and satisfaction

  1097. it's another word

  1098. for contentment.

  1099. It's even used

  1100. in Isaiah 66 12

  1101. to describe the care

  1102. that a mother

1103. provides to a restless child.

  1104. Listen to Isaiah 66 12 and 13

1105. For thus says the Lord

  1106. Behold I will extend

  1107. peace to her

  1108. that is his people

  1109. like a river

1110. in the glory of the nations

  1111. like an overflowing stream

  1112. and you shall nurse

1113. and you shall be carried

  1114. upon her hip

1115. and bounced on her knee

  1116. that is the word

  1117. cheered

  1118. bounced upon her knees

1119. as one whom the mother

  1120. comforts

1121. so I will comfort you

  1122. you shall be comforted

  1123. in Jerusalem.

  1124. This is how God

  1125. deals with his people.

  1126. In the midst of

  1127. swelling concerns

  1128. the divine consolations

  1129. cheer the soul

  1130. like a baby's

  1131. crying eyes

  1132. go to laughing

  1133. on the mother's

  1134. bouncing knee.

  1135. The look of affirmation

  1136. love

  1137. care

  1138. acceptance

  1139. providing love

  1140. and just

  1141. being close

  1142. to one's mother

  1143. takes the swelling

  1144. concerns

  1145. to cheer

  1146. and that's what Isaiah

  1147. is saying

  1148. look at a mother

  1149. console her child

  1150. and see

  1151. that's how God's

  1152. consolations

  1153. cheer his people.

  1154. This is how God

  1155. deals with us.

  1156. This is superior

  1157. comfort

  1158. to our

  1159. issues.

  1160. See food

  1161. may nourish the body

  1162. wine

  1163. can cheer the heart

  1164. music

  1165. soothes

  1166. the ear

  1167. art

  1168. can captivate

  1169. the eyes

  1170. sleep

  1171. refreshes

  1172. the body

  1173. but the only

  1174. thing

  1175. that consoles

  1176. the heart

  1177. and soul

  1178. is the

  1179. consolation

  1180. of God.

  1181. That's the only

  1182. thing

  1183. that ultimately

  1184. brings rest.

  1185. And you know

  1186. if we think about

  1187. the Lord Jesus Christ

  1188. we could see him

  1189. in the midst

  1190. of this verse

  1191. when the cares

  1192. of his heart

  1193. were many

  1194. your consolations

  1195. cheered

  1196. his soul.

  1197. Do you remember

  1198. Jesus in the

  1199. garden of Gethsemane?

  1200. There when he

  1201. told his disciples

  1202. to pray

  1203. and he goes

  1204. and he said

  1205. his soul

  1206. was distressed

  1207. and dispirited

  1208. to the point

  1209. of death

  1210. and he fell

  1211. upon the ground

  1212. and he pleaded

  1213. with his father

  1214. pleading with him

  1215. to take the cup

  1216. of wrath

  1217. which was going

  1218. to be the judgment

  1219. upon our sin

  1220. which he was going

  1221. to bear.

  1222. He said

1223. if it is your will

  1224. will you allow

  1225. this cup

  1226. to pass for me?

  1227. Nevertheless

  1228. not my will

  1229. but your will

  1230. be done.

  1231. In the midst

  1232. of great agony

  1233. in the garden

  1234. Jesus is faced

  1235. with the agony

  1236. of the cup

  1237. but his consolation

  1238. is ultimately

  1239. in the will

  1240. of God

  1241. and nevertheless

  1242. not my will

  1243. but your will

  1244. be done.

  1245. He rests

  1246. in God's will

  1247. in his character

  1248. as the swelling

  1249. concerns of his heart

  1250. were many

  1251. he was cheered

  1252. even by the will

  1253. of God

  1254. and that's what

  1255. we end up reading

  1256. in verses 1 and 2

  1257. of Hebrew.

  1258. Look to the Jesus

  1259. the founder

  1260. and perfecter

  1261. of our faith

  1262. for the joy

  1263. that was set

  1264. before him

  1265. endured the cross

  1266. despised the shame

  1267. and is seated

  1268. at the right hand

  1269. of God.

  1270. Jesus is the model

  1271. of being consoled

  1272. by God

  1273. and the joy

  1274. set before him.

  1275. He's also the motivation

  1276. for us to live

  1277. in that way.

  1278. We look at Jesus

  1279. the one who lived

  1280. for us

  1281. died for us

  1282. and was raised

  1283. on the third day

  1284. and we see him

  1285. in the way

  1286. that he bore up

  1287. under such anguish

  1288. and we're reminded

1289. that God cares for us

  1290. because of what Christ

  1291. has done

  1292. and we find ourselves

  1293. clinging to him.

  1294. He is the consoler

  1295. for the weary soul.

  1296. We find our rest

  1297. in him.

  1298. We can be content

  1299. in God

  1300. because he supplies

  1301. our need.

  1302. So in the midst

  1303. of a pandemic

  1304. of fear,

  1305. anxiety,

  1306. and uncertainty

  1307. the soul's medicine

  1308. is God himself.

  1309. His consolations

  1310. cheer our soul.

  1311. So I trust

  1312. that today

  1313. and this week

  1314. in the midst

  1315. of constant alerts,

  1316. bad news,

  1317. difficult phone calls,

  1318. tough conversations,

  1319. personal,

  1320. spiritual,

  1321. relational,

  1322. physical issues,

  1323. that your reflex

  1324. is going to be

  1325. to worry

  1326. and to be filled

  1327. with anxiety

  1328. and just march

  1329. and step

  1330. with everyone else

  1331. that's filled

  1332. with anxiety.

  1333. But I trust

  1334. that you may remember

  1335. by God's grace

  1336. the kindness

  1337. of the Holy Spirit

  1338. if you be reminded

  1339. of this verse

  1340. that when the cares

  1341. of my heart

  1342. are many,

  1343. your consolations

  1344. cheer my soul.

  1345. Your soul

  1346. can be cheered

  1347. by divine consolations.

  1348. May God

  1349. be pleased

  1350. to make that so

  1351. this week

  1352. for all of us.

  1353. Let's pray.

  1354. Let's pray.

  1355. Our Father,

  1356. we are very needy

  1357. people

  1358. and we thank you

  1359. that our neediness

  1360. finds your sufficiency.

  1361. Everything we need

  1362. and we lack

  1363. you have provided

  1364. for us in Christ.

  1365. Christ.

1366. And so we thank you

  1367. for your wonderful grace,

  1368. your patience,

  1369. and your mercy.

  1370. And we do pray

  1371. that in the midst

  1372. of this time

  1373. in particular

  1374. that we would find

  1375. ourselves resting

  1376. upon you

  1377. and your consolations,

  1378. your character

  1379. and your commitment

  1380. to your people.

  1381. Forgive us

  1382. for the ways

1383. in which we turn away

  1384. and we reflect

  1385. the old nature

  1386. and demonstrate

  1387. an unbelief

1388. and a lack of faith.

  1389. We pray that we

  1390. would wear out

  1391. a new path,

  1392. one that goes back

  1393. to Christ

  1394. and we find

  1395. our rest in Him,

1396. the one who is gentle

  1397. and lowly

  1398. and humble

  1399. and welcomes us

  1400. with a light burden

  1401. and a yoke

  1402. that is easy

  1403. to give rest

  1404. for our souls.

  1405. I pray that we

  1406. would rejoice

1407. in our Lord Jesus Christ

  1408. and we would cling

  1409. to your Word.

  1410. And I pray, Lord,

  1411. for this church,

  1412. Trinity Cambridge,

  1413. that you would use

1414. the people of this church

  1415. to be an encouragement

  1416. to one another,

  1417. to remind one another,

  1418. to speak the truth

  1419. and love,

  1420. reminding each other

  1421. of the divine consolations,

  1422. to cheer the souls

  1423. in the midst

  1424. of swelling concerns.

  1425. And I pray

  1426. for a faithful witness

  1427. to those outside

  1428. of Christ

  1429. in the church

1430. to speak the good word

  1431. of the gospel

  1432. where one might find

  1433. hope and peace

  1434. in the midst

  1435. of their own

  1436. swelling concerns.

  1437. Thank you

  1438. for your sufficiency

  1439. in the midst

  1440. of our weakness.

  1441. Thank you

  1442. for your love

  1443. in the midst

  1444. of our great need.

  1445. We pray

  1446. in Jesus' name.

  1447. Amen.
