  1. Sean and the Woos are dear friends of ours. I got the privilege of meeting Sean at our

  2. pastor's college back in 2013-14 and I would say that it is very true that

  3. his iron sharpens iron so spending time with Sean Woo was some of the most

  4. edifying and blessed time of being there for a year and he's the only regret of

  5. not being able to spend more time with him of the way in which Sean encourages

  6. challenges and spurs us on in our faith and you are blessed to have him as your

  7. pastor and we love to get to know the Woos as well and they have a few more since we last met them and

  8. what a blessing they are. As Sean said this morning this evening we're going to be in Psalm 25

  9. but before we get there let me pray and give some more opening words of introduction.

  10. Would you pray with me? Father God we are very much aware of our need for you this evening

  11. of your need to speak to help to help us concentrate. Thank you for the facilities we meet in but even

  12. then we need help to focus things are still not the way we expect them to be and anything it seems

  13. can distract us from what is truly valuable what is truly going to help us and speak to us. Help me

  14. as I preach help us all as we listen to be submitted to your word and by your spirit working in and in

  15. us and through us will change us more into the likeness of your son Jesus Christ. In his name we pray.

  16. Amen. Amen.

  17. Like I say we're going to turn to Psalm 25 but before I read there let me ask you are you familiar

  18. with what with one of the shortest and yet perhaps the most terrifying questions that known to man

  19. and it's the question are we there yet? It's a question which most parents have received during

  20. some long car journey or other and you may well have even asked it yourself at one point or another.

  21. It's a short yet terrifying question because we know that it is not an honest inquiry about

  22. geographic location about distance and travel times but it is a question loaded with hidden meaning.

  23. Maybe it really means I'm hungry or I'm thirsty or I'm tired or I'm bored or my brother hit me or I need

  24. the bathroom or I feel sick or any other thing and you as the parent receiving this request are now

  25. expected to deal with it to be the answer and address this need. You heard the struggle now respond.

  26. Now as adults we don't tend to ask that question anymore at least not in that way we don't articulate

  27. it but I think we still carry within us the same spirit about many of the things we experience through

  28. the journey of life. Many of us and we're all experiencing obviously the impacts of COVID-19,

  29. the health impacts and then responding and dealing with various precautions and response to the virus

  30. and it's right and appropriate in our souls to ask are we there yet? But there may be many other

  31. things that we experience struggles with where we ask that same essential question. Maybe it's some

  32. difficult relationship within our families or within our with our work colleagues. Maybe it's just the

  33. struggle with holding down a decent paying job even though you've tried your hardest to apply yourself.

  34. Maybe it's an ongoing struggle with sin and guilt that doesn't seem to move and it's just a question of

  35. Lord are we there yet? I want to be done with this. And although we may not articulate those words

  36. I think we're somewhere often in a spectrum of how we handle complaints and struggles. On one end

  37. it may be that complaining becomes very easy to you and you will complain in every breath every

  38. opportunity anyone who will listen. And with the advance of social media obviously we've all got a

  39. platform 24-7 in which to share our complaints and find someone at least who's going to jump on that

  40. complaint and join with us in it. But on the other end of the spectrum maybe you don't know how to

  41. complain or maybe you've been brought up like I have in a culture where we really don't complain at all.

  42. I am British and part of our ethos is to keep a stiff upper lip. Complaining just won't do. We don't do that.

  43. And generally speaking obviously everyone's different. Cultures are different and vary widely.

  44. But I would say New England we tend to endorse that attitude don't we?

  45. No I'm not going to complain. I won't say anything. I don't want to rock the boat.

  46. Well wherever you are on that spectrum

  47. we will be wrong in how we address and handle complaints if we don't do so in the way God

  48. intends to us. Intends us to handle our struggles and our complaints before him.

  49. And this evening we're going to look in the Psalms to help us, guide us and teach us

  50. in how to handle complaints in a way which is honoring to God and his word

  51. rather than be informed by our natural bent or by our culture around us.

  52. Actually if you're not familiar the Psalms have a rich content of various different Psalms

  53. of different types and dynamics but actually the most common of all the Psalms

  54. are Psalms of lament or Psalms of complaint.

  55. So clearly we can take from that that God wants us to know how we can and how we should bring our struggles to him

  56. and how to do so.

  57. So we're going to look at Psalm 20-25 as a good lesson for us

  58. in how to bring our struggles to God

  59. and by God's grace I trust that we're going to learn

  60. the way God intends for us to pour out our soul and our struggles to him

  61. because of his steadfast love and his mercy and goodness to us in Christ Jesus.

  62. So read with me in Psalm 25 starting in verse 1.

  63. The Psalmist David says this,

  64. To you O Lord I lift up my soul.

  65. O my God in you I trust.

  66. Let me not be put to shame.

  67. Let not my enemies exult over me.

  68. Indeed none who wait for you shall be put to shame.

  69. They shall be ashamed who are wantonly treacherous.

  70. Make me to know your ways O Lord.

  71. Teach me your paths.

  72. Lead me in your truth and teach me.

  73. For you are the God of my salvation.

  74. For you I will wait all the day long.

  75. Remember your mercy O Lord and your steadfast love

  76. for they have been from of old.

  77. Remember not the sins of my youth or my transgressions.

  78. According to your steadfast love remember me.

  79. For the sake of your goodness O Lord.

  80. Good and upright is the Lord.

  81. Therefore he instructs sinners in the way.

  82. He leads the humble in what is right

  83. and teaches the humble his way.

  84. All the paths of the Lord are steadfast love

  85. and faithfulness

  86. for those who keep his covenant and his testimonies.

  87. For your namesake O Lord pardon my guilt

  88. for it is great.

  89. Who is the man who fears the Lord?

  90. Him will he instruct in the way that he should choose.

  91. His soul shall abide in well-being

  92. and his offspring shall inherit the land.

  93. The friendship of the Lord is for those who fear him

  94. and he makes known to them his covenant.

  95. My eyes are ever toward the Lord

  96. for he will pluck my feet out from the net.

  97. Turn to me and be gracious to me

  98. for I am lonely and afflicted.

  99. The troubles of my heart are enlarged.

  100. Bring me out of my distresses.

  101. Consider my affliction and my trouble

  102. and forgive all my sins.

  103. Consider how many are my foes

  104. and with what violent hatred they hate me.

  105. O God my soul and deliver me.

  106. Let me not be put to shame

  107. for I take refuge in you.

  108. May integrity and uprightness preserve me

  109. for I wait for you.

  110. Redeem Israel O God

  111. out of all his troubles.

  112. This is God's word from Psalm 25.

  113. I encourage you to keep that open

  114. in front of you if you can

  115. because we'll be referencing

  116. various verses through that

  117. through this message.

  118. I'm sure you've seen as we were reading that

  119. that this psalm doesn't cover

  120. one single struggle that David has

  121. but it's rather many entwined threads

  122. throughout this psalm

  123. entwined threads of David's

  124. the psalmist is struggling with

  125. of what he's expecting from God

  126. and how he is approaching God

  127. because of them.

  128. And I think life is like that

  129. for all of us isn't it?

  130. Rarely are we presented with one issue

  131. all by itself

  132. one struggle at a time.

  133. Often we have many

  134. and they are all connected

  135. in one form or another.

  136. If not directly in what's causing them

  137. then at least in how they impact us

  138. in terms of maybe our body

  139. or our mind

  140. or our souls at least

  141. before the Lord.

  142. So to help us see

  143. these elements in the psalm

  144. we're going to consider it

  145. under three questions

  146. and with each question

  147. we're going to try to tease out

  148. those entwined threads

  149. so that we can better appreciate

  150. and benefit from it

  151. once we put them all back together.

  152. So the three questions

  153. we're going to look at

  154. from this psalm is

  155. what shall we bring to God?

  156. What should we bring to God?

  157. What should we expect from God?

  158. And then how should we wait for God?

  159. What should we bring to God?

  160. What should we expect from God?

  161. And how should we wait for God?

  162. And for each of those

  163. we're going to kind of tease out

  164. four threads of thought

  165. that we see through the psalms

  166. through that psalm.

  167. So first of all

  168. let's start with

  169. what should we bring to God?

  170. And the first thread

  171. we tease out in that

  172. answering that question

  173. is the need

  174. that we bring to God

  175. of being lost

  176. and in need of direction.

  177. Look at verse four.

  178. He says

  179. make me to know your ways

  180. O Lord

  181. teach me your paths

  182. lead me in your truth

  183. and teach me

  184. for you are the God

  185. of my salvation.

  186. We're perhaps

  187. very keenly aware

  188. of our need

  189. under these current

  190. unprecedented circumstances

  191. with COVID

  192. and the regularly changing

  193. guidance and directives

  194. that we're asking

  195. this question

  196. aren't we of one another

  197. and of God

  198. what should we do?

  199. What does wisdom look like

  200. regarding my personal health?

  201. Regarding the health

  202. of my loved ones?

  203. What's the right thing

  204. to do about my work situation?

  205. Whether I'm still employed

  206. and I'm having to adjust

  207. to new working arrangements

  208. or maybe I'm now

  209. out of work

  210. and I'm looking for new work

  211. perhaps in a completely

  212. different field

  213. than before.

  214. What about coming to church?

  215. Do I come to church?

  216. Do I stay home?

  217. What should our service

  218. look like?

  219. I'm sure your elders

  220. are wrestling

  221. with those sorts of questions.

  222. What about school?

  223. What does school look like

  224. when we go back to school

  225. and how will that affect

  226. our decision

  227. as to what we do next year?

  228. We have all of these things

  229. in common to some degree

  230. of feeling lost

  231. and in need of direction

  232. under these present circumstances

  233. but we don't need to pretend

  234. that these struggles

  235. only started with COVID.

  236. All of these sorts of questions

  237. and many more

  238. are regular questions we face.

  239. Questions around our career,

  240. our family,

  241. health,

  242. relationships,

  243. finances.

  244. Psalm 25 tells us

  245. that we can channel

  246. all of these struggles

  247. about feeling lost

  248. and in need of direction

  249. to God.

  250. The second theme

  251. or thread we see here

  252. in terms of bringing

  253. our needs to God,

  254. our struggles to God

  255. is in terms of attack

  256. from our enemies.

  257. Verse 2 says,

  258. Oh my God,

  259. in you I trust.

  260. Let me not be put to shame.

  261. Let not my enemies

  262. exult over me.

  263. And then later in verse 19,

  264. Consider how many

  265. are my foes

  266. and with what violent hatred

  267. do they hate me.

  268. Now you may not think

  269. of many people around you

  270. as enemies as such,

  271. but I think we all know

  272. what it means

  273. to have people oppose us

  274. at one time or another

  275. in different ways.

  276. It may be something

  277. as simple as the person

  278. who cut you off

  279. in market basket parking lot

  280. to something far more

  281. long lasting

  282. as the work colleague

  283. who is persistently

  284. seeking to undermine you

  285. for the last 10 years.

  286. Or perhaps it's opposition

  287. that you experience

  288. for speaking out

  289. for Christian truth

  290. and values

  291. in the matters of race

  292. or ethnicity.

  293. Or challenging either side

  294. of the political spectrum

  295. when either policy

  296. or character

  297. conflicts with God

  298. and his ways.

  299. The psalmist does not hesitate

  300. to bring this opposition

  301. to God

  302. and encourages us

  303. to do the same.

  304. The third thing we see here

  305. in what the psalmist

  306. brings to God

  307. is the need

  308. around loneliness.

  309. In verse 16,

  310. Turn to me

  311. and be gracious to me

  312. for I am lonely

  313. and afflicted.

  314. So often with opposition

  315. either directed

  316. to me personally

  317. or impersonally

  318. by virtue

  319. just of the group

  320. that I identify with

  321. or groups I identify with

  322. that coupled with opposition

  323. comes a deep sense

  324. of being alone.

  325. Even though others

  326. may be around me physically,

  327. if they stand against me

  328. or against my beliefs,

  329. we feel that distance

  330. between us

  331. in our souls,

  332. don't we?

  333. We feel very much

  334. that sense of us

  335. and them

  336. which leads to

  337. our isolation.

  338. Or again,

  339. in this climate

  340. of COVID,

  341. many are physically

  342. alone

  343. and isolated

  344. in a way

  345. which is unprecedented.

  346. And it doesn't take long

  347. under those circumstances

  348. for loneliness

  349. to be a constant

  350. and unwelcome companion

  351. from the moment

  352. you wake up

  353. to the moment

  354. you go to bed

  355. at night.

  356. And Psalm 25

  357. invites us

  358. to pour out

  359. that loneliness

  360. to God.

  361. The fourth struggle

  362. that we see here

  363. in this psalm

  364. is with sin

  365. and with guilt.

  366. Verse 7

  367. says,

  368. Remember not

  369. the sins

  370. of my youth

  371. and my transgressions.

  372. And in verse 11,

  373. For your namesake,

  374. O Lord,

  375. pardon my guilt

  376. for it is great.

  377. The psalmist

  378. does not either

  379. hide past

  380. or present sin

  381. or guilt

  382. over that sin

  383. from God

  384. but regardless

  385. for all of us

  386. whether you came

  387. to Christ

  388. as an adult

  389. as I did

  390. or whether you

  391. grew up

  392. in a Christian home

  393. and have always

  394. walked with him

  395. as long as you

  396. can remember,

  397. most of us

  398. I would imagine

  399. can look back

  400. at our youth

  401. our younger days

  402. and have regret

  403. for things

  404. that we did

  405. or things

  406. that we said

  407. or things

  408. that we neglected

  409. to do

  410. that did not

  411. meet God's

  412. standard

  413. of character

  414. or his ways.

  415. And yet sadly

  416. our fight

  417. with sin

  418. isn't confined

  419. simply to our youth

  420. or to our younger days

  421. although by God's grace

  422. we should see progress

  423. year by year

  424. yet the nearer

  425. we walk

  426. with Jesus

  427. the more

  428. is exposed

  429. within us

  430. that does not

  431. meet God's standard

  432. which the Bible

  433. calls sin.

  434. And sometimes

  435. that sense

  436. of sin

  437. perhaps either

  438. because of the sense

  439. of its magnitude

  440. or because of a sense

  441. of how persistently

  442. it remains

  443. and lingers

  444. plaguing us

  445. and without any

  446. appreciable progress

  447. that sin

  448. and guilt

  449. can weigh heavily

  450. on our souls.

  451. and yet God's word

  452. in Psalm 25

  453. encourages us

  454. to see

  455. that there is no end

  456. to being able

  457. to bring

  458. our burden

  459. of sin

  460. and guilt

  461. before God.

  462. Whether it is

  463. fresh from this morning

  464. or where it is

  465. from decades ago

  466. Psalm 25

  467. shows us

  468. that God wants us

  469. to pour out

  470. our souls

  471. and our struggles

  472. with sin

  473. to him.

  474. Now Psalm 25

  475. is not an exhaustive

  476. list of struggles

  477. that we can bring

  478. to God

  479. but as I say

  480. there are many

  481. other Psalms

  482. of lament

  483. which cover

  484. struggles

  485. with physical

  486. affliction

  487. struggles

  488. with feeling

  489. great distance

  490. and separation

  491. from God.

  492. Whatever they may be

  493. these Psalms

  494. function to help

  495. us see that

  496. however messy

  497. however entwined

  498. and knits together

  499. God intends us

  500. to bring them

  501. to him

  502. so that in general

  503. we will be able

  504. to echo

  505. verse 17

  506. of this Psalm

  507. the troubles

  508. of my heart

  509. are enlarged

  510. bring me

  511. out of my

  512. distresses

  513. Now it is

  514. one thing

  515. to be invited

  516. to pour out

  517. our soul

  518. and our struggles

  519. to God

  520. it's another thing

  521. to know what

  522. God promises

  523. to do in response

  524. is God

  525. just a listening

  526. ear

  527. or is he

  528. willing to help

  529. us in these

  530. struggles

  531. and if he's

  532. willing to help

  533. is he able

  534. to help us

  535. in them

  536. so that leads

  537. us to our

  538. second question

  539. what should we

  540. expect from

  541. God

  542. and again

  543. we're going to

  544. go back to the

  545. same four threads

  546. that we see

  547. woven through

  548. this Psalm

  549. so first of all

  550. regarding the

  551. need for direction

  552. we can expect

  553. teaching and

  554. guidance

  555. if you look at

  556. verse 8

  557. we read

  558. good and upright

  559. is the Lord

  560. therefore he

  561. instructs sinners

  562. in the way

  563. he leads

  564. the humble

  565. in what is

  566. right and

  567. teaches the

  568. humble his

  569. way

  570. and then

  571. verse 12

  572. who is the

  573. man who

  574. fears the

  575. Lord

  576. him he will

  577. instruct in

  578. the way that

  579. he should

  580. choose

  581. when we bring

  582. our need for

  583. guidance and

  584. direction to

  585. God he

  586. promises to

  587. teach and

  588. to guide

  589. now

  590. unfortunately

  591. this is not

  592. the sermon to

  593. go into great

  594. detail on how

  595. God teaches

  596. and guides

  597. but to

  598. suffice to

  599. say that

  600. God has

  601. given us

  602. his word

  603. that is

  604. enough for

  605. the man of

  606. God to be

  607. complete

  608. equipped for

  609. every good

  610. work according

  611. to 2 Timothy

  612. 3 16

  613. and he has

  614. given Christians

  615. his spirit who

  616. guides us into

  617. all truth

  618. in John

  619. 16 13

  620. so that is to

  621. say that we

  622. can be confident

  623. that when we

  624. come to God

  625. pouring out our

  626. needs to him

  627. for guidance

  628. we can hear

  629. him speak to

  630. us

  631. he instructs

  632. us and he

  633. teaches us

  634. through his

  635. word so we

  636. must couple

  637. our prayers

  638. with reading

  639. his word

  640. and we can be

  641. encouraged that

  642. we are not

  643. left to our

  644. own intellect

  645. and our own

  646. ability to

  647. figure out what

  648. he is saying

  649. to us

  650. although God

  651. does those

  652. gifts are

  653. gifts from

  654. God and he

  655. certainly uses

  656. them but rather

  657. he also gives

  658. us his Holy

  659. Spirit to be

  660. with us

  661. to be with

  662. us and in

  663. us and to

  664. speak through

  665. his word

  666. to guide us

  667. certainly God

  668. can and does

  669. use other

  670. means and ways

  671. to speak to

  672. us through

  673. prophetic ministry

  674. for example

  675. but the normal

  676. means that God

  677. has given to

  678. speak to us

  679. and to receive

  680. instruction and

  681. that we need to

  682. look to is

  683. through his

  684. written word

  685. now clearly

  686. though scripture

  687. does not address

  688. directly how

  689. to reopen

  690. schools under

  691. COVID-19

  692. or a myriad

  693. of many other

  694. very specific

  695. needs for

  696. guidance that

  697. we can

  698. legitimately

  699. bring to

  700. him asking

  701. for direction

  702. but scripture

  703. and Psalm 25

  704. tells us that

  705. God is more

  706. inclined to

  707. direct us

  708. through informing

  709. us and shaping

  710. us to cause

  711. us to be

  712. spiritually aligned

  713. with his ways

  714. of moral

  715. uprightness

  716. his paths

  717. of righteousness

  718. so that when

  719. we are feeling

  720. lost and in

  721. need of direction

  722. and look to

  723. God for

  724. guidance

  725. God's way

  726. and the way

  727. that we discern

  728. to be the best

  729. way increasingly

  730. come into

  731. alignment

  732. so we can

  733. expect the

  734. teaching and

  735. guidance that

  736. our souls

  737. truly need

  738. now regarding

  739. struggles with

  740. enemies and

  741. opposition

  742. we should

  743. expect

  744. deliverance

  745. look at

  746. verse 3

  747. the psalmist

  748. says

  749. indeed

  750. none who

  751. wait for you

  752. shall be put

  753. to shame

  754. they shall be

  755. ashamed who

  756. are wantonly

  757. treacherous

  758. the psalmist

  759. declares his

  760. confidence to

  761. trust in God

  762. over fearing

  763. his enemies

  764. and that he

  765. knows God

  766. will safely

  767. deliver him

  768. the apostle

  769. Paul had a

  770. very similar

  771. confidence to

  772. declare

  773. if God is

  774. for us

  775. who can be

  776. against us

  777. in Romans

  778. 8

  779. 31

  780. now such

  781. confidence for

  782. Paul and for

  783. the psalmist

  784. is available to

  785. us

  786. and it comes

  787. from knowing

  788. that just like

  789. with David

  790. and with Paul

  791. the deliverance

  792. they sought

  793. and they

  794. received

  795. it doesn't

  796. make enemies

  797. suddenly disappear

  798. or suddenly

  799. change their

  800. ways

  801. although God

  802. can make

  803. both of those

  804. things happen

  805. but they

  806. had confidence

  807. that their

  808. enemies would

  809. not overcome

  810. God's hand

  811. upon them

  812. and in the

  813. final reckoning

  814. their enemies

  815. had no hope

  816. for victory

  817. because God

  818. is on their

  819. side

  820. God will

  821. rescue his

  822. people from

  823. shame

  824. we may not

  825. see that

  826. until the

  827. courts of

  828. eternal

  829. judgment

  830. for all

  831. to see

  832. but God

  833. will advocate

  834. for you

  835. and deliver

  836. you

  837. the third

  838. thing we see

  839. in terms of

  840. what to expect

  841. from God

  842. regarding loneliness

  843. is we can

  844. expect his

  845. presence

  846. look at verse

  847. 14

  848. it says

  849. the friendship

  850. of the Lord

  851. is for those

  852. who fear him

  853. and he makes

  854. known to them

  855. his covenant

  856. now in the

  857. ESV translation

  858. which I'm

  859. reading from

  860. with friendship

  861. there's a little

  862. footnote

  863. which says

  864. secret counsel

  865. and other

  866. translations use

  867. those sorts of

  868. language

  869. it makes no

  870. difference really

  871. because the

  872. idea is of a

  873. person laying

  874. their loneliness

  875. before God

  876. and finding him

  877. that he takes

  878. them into his

  879. confidence

  880. the king of the

  881. universe ushers

  882. us into his

  883. throne room

  884. to hear our

  885. struggle

  886. and he doesn't

  887. issue direction

  888. from afar

  889. rather he

  890. welcomes us

  891. and directs us

  892. to the seat

  893. beside him

  894. he leans over

  895. and he lets us

  896. be privy

  897. not just to any

  898. counsel

  899. not just to any

  900. promises

  901. but to his

  902. counsel

  903. and to his

  904. promises

  905. Jesus said

  906. something very

  907. similar in

  908. John 15

    John 15:15

  909. verse 15

  910. he said

  911. no longer

  912. do I call

  913. you servants

  914. for the servant

  915. does not know

  916. what his

  917. master is doing

  918. but I have

  919. called you

  920. friends

  921. for all that

  922. I have heard

  923. from my

  924. father

  925. I have made

  926. known to

  927. you

  928. the lonely

  929. have confidence

  930. to expect

  931. from God

  932. his presence

  933. and his

  934. comfort

  935. and then

  936. lastly

  937. for sin

  938. and guilt

  939. we should

  940. expect mercy

  941. and love

  942. in verse 6

  943. we read

  944. remember your

  945. mercy

  946. oh lord

  947. and your

  948. steadfast love

  949. for they have

  950. been from of

  951. old

  952. remember not

  953. the sins of

  954. my youth

  955. or my

  956. transgressions

  957. according to

  958. your steadfast love

  959. remember me

  960. for the sake

  961. of your

  962. goodness

  963. oh lord

  964. when we

  965. bring our

  966. struggles

  967. before God

  968. whether they're

  969. a jumble

  970. or just

  971. one single

  972. struggle

  973. and whether

  974. it includes

  975. guilt

  976. or the

  977. burden

  978. of sin

  979. or not

  980. at some

  981. point

  982. I'm sure

  983. we've all

  984. heard the

  985. small voice

  986. of our

  987. conscience

  988. blended

  989. with the

  990. voice of

  991. the evil

  992. one that

  993. whispers to

  994. us

  995. God's not

  996. going to

  997. listen to

  998. you

  999. not after

  1000. what you've

  1001. done

  1002. do you

  1003. really expect

  1004. that God's

  1005. going to

  1006. listen to

  1007. you and

  1008. help you

  1009. with that

  1010. sin in

  1011. your life

  1012. or in

  1013. your past

  1014. as I

  1015. imagine

  1016. I say

  1017. we've all

  1018. had that

  1019. sort of

  1020. temptation

  1021. I would

  1022. expect

  1023. and we

  1024. attempted

  1025. with a

  1026. response

  1027. of perhaps

  1028. one of

  1029. two things

  1030. either to

  1031. give up

  1032. coming to

  1033. God

  1034. altogether

  1035. or just

  1036. to try to

  1037. make up

  1038. for our

  1039. sin and

  1040. our failure

  1041. by trying

  1042. all the more

  1043. hard to

  1044. win

  1045. got back

  1046. God's

  1047. affection

  1048. and

  1049. Psalm 25

  1050. speaks loudly

  1051. and a

  1052. wonderful truth

  1053. to drown

  1054. out and

  1055. correct the

  1056. error and

  1057. wickedness of

  1058. that temptation

  1059. verse 8

  1060. speaks gloriously

  1061. good and

  1062. upright is

  1063. the Lord

  1064. therefore

  1065. he instructs

  1066. sinners

  1067. in the

  1068. way

  1069. Psalm 25

  1070. reminds us

  1071. that God

  1072. chooses to

  1073. relate to

  1074. us not

  1075. on the

  1076. basis of

  1077. who we

  1078. are

  1079. but on

  1080. the basis

  1081. of who

  1082. he is

  1083. and that

  1084. doesn't mean

  1085. that sin

  1086. is irrelevant

  1087. to our

  1088. relationship

  1089. with God

  1090. but it

  1091. means that

  1092. sin is not

  1093. an impediment

  1094. to our

  1095. relationship

  1096. with God

  1097. sin is not

  1098. a permanent

  1099. barrier

  1100. to our

  1101. relationship

  1102. with him

  1103. God chooses

  1104. to show

  1105. mercy

  1106. and steadfast

  1107. love to

  1108. sinners

  1109. and that

  1110. is not

  1111. man's

  1112. wishful

  1113. thinking

  1114. that is

  1115. God's

  1116. word to

  1117. us right

  1118. here in

  1119. this

  1120. Psalm

  1121. and so

  1122. that's the

  1123. confidence

  1124. that we

  1125. can have

  1126. when we

  1127. come to

  1128. God

  1129. bearing the

  1130. struggle

  1131. with sin

  1132. and guilt

  1133. we can

  1134. pour out

  1135. our soul

  1136. and our

  1137. struggles

  1138. to God

  1139. because of

  1140. his steadfast

  1141. love

  1142. and goodness

  1143. and it

  1144. occurs to

  1145. me that

  1146. we have

  1147. a glimpse

  1148. a little

  1149. more keenly

  1150. of the

  1151. magnitude

  1152. of God's

  1153. steadfast

  1154. love

  1155. and goodness

  1156. on display

  1157. right now

  1158. under

  1159. COVID

  1160. you see

  1161. for me

  1162. it just

  1163. takes one

  1164. child of

  1165. mine to

  1166. ask are

  1167. we there

  1168. yet

  1169. for me

  1170. to find

  1171. my patience

  1172. a little

  1173. tested

  1174. a little

  1175. tried

  1176. but with

  1177. God

  1178. I'm sure

  1179. that it's

  1180. not simply

  1181. one of

  1182. his children

  1183. asking him

  1184. are we

  1185. there yet

  1186. but rather

  1187. his children

  1188. around the

  1189. world

  1190. are crying

  1191. out day

  1192. by day

  1193. hour

  1194. by hour

  1195. Lord

  1196. are we

  1197. there yet

  1198. and our

  1199. father

  1200. does not

  1201. once

  1202. roll

  1203. his eyes

  1204. not once

  1205. mutter

  1206. under his

  1207. breath

  1208. but

  1209. patiently

  1210. responds

  1211. with his

  1212. counsel

  1213. with his

  1214. deliverance

  1215. with his

  1216. presence

  1217. and with

  1218. his mercy

  1219. and with

  1220. his love

  1221. but having

  1222. said that

  1223. it is very

  1224. important to

  1225. know one

  1226. final thread

  1227. that is woven

  1228. through this

  1229. psalm of

  1230. struggle

  1231. and that's

  1232. the thread

  1233. of waiting

  1234. in verse

  1235. 3

  1236. and in

  1237. verse 5

  1238. and in

  1239. verse 21

  1240. we hear this

  1241. similar

  1242. message

  1243. from the

  1244. psalmist

  1245. that for

  1246. you

  1247. I wait

  1248. all the

  1249. day

  1250. long

  1251. and if

  1252. we truly

  1253. value the

  1254. counsel

  1255. and the

  1256. care

  1257. and the

  1258. comfort

  1259. that God

  1260. promises

  1261. his

  1262. children

  1263. then we

  1264. will want

  1265. to receive

  1266. them

  1267. according to

  1268. God's

  1269. time scale

  1270. and not

  1271. according to

  1272. our own

  1273. it's not

  1274. that God

  1275. simply enjoys

  1276. keeping us

  1277. in suspense

  1278. but it is

  1279. that in

  1280. his wisdom

  1281. not only does

  1282. he know

  1283. what we

  1284. need

  1285. but he

  1286. also knows

  1287. when we

  1288. need it

  1289. and that

  1290. leads us

  1291. to the

  1292. last and

  1293. third question

  1294. we want to

  1295. consider from

  1296. this psalm

  1297. how should

  1298. we wait

  1299. for God

  1300. and in

  1301. psalm 25

  1302. again we see

  1303. these four

  1304. threads

  1305. for how the

  1306. psalmist

  1307. waits for

  1308. God

  1309. the first

  1310. we see in

  1311. verse 9

  1312. is that he

  1313. waits with

  1314. humility

  1315. and in

  1316. verse 12

  1317. with fear

  1318. let me read

  1319. those two

  1320. verses 9

  1321. and 12

  1322. he leads

  1323. the humble

  1324. in what

  1325. is right

  1326. and teaches

  1327. the humble

  1328. his way

  1329. and then

  1330. who is the

  1331. man who

  1332. fears the

  1333. Lord

  1334. him he

  1335. will instruct

  1336. in the way

  1337. that he

  1338. should choose

  1339. humility

  1340. before God

  1341. submits

  1342. to hear

  1343. to receive

  1344. and to

  1345. follow

  1346. God's

  1347. way

  1348. it says

  1349. to God

  1350. you know

  1351. best

  1352. and your

  1353. way is

  1354. best

  1355. I will

  1356. choose

  1357. no other

  1358. way

  1359. and the

  1360. fear of

  1361. God

  1362. puts the

  1363. consequences

  1364. of not

  1365. following

  1366. him

  1367. and his

  1368. ways

  1369. above

  1370. any

  1371. gain

  1372. that

  1373. might

  1374. be

  1375. had

  1376. from

  1377. following

  1378. another

  1379. way

  1380. that God

  1381. says

  1382. is off

  1383. limits

  1384. and I

  1385. tie those

  1386. two

  1387. together

  1388. because of

  1389. James 4

  1390. 6

  1391. which says

  1392. God

  1393. opposes

  1394. the

  1395. proud

  1396. but gives

  1397. grace

  1398. to the

  1399. humble

  1400. the fear

  1401. of God's

  1402. opposition

  1403. is to

  1404. lead us

  1405. to shun

  1406. pride

  1407. and that

  1408. same

  1409. desire

  1410. for God's

  1411. grace

  1412. is to

  1413. lead us

  1414. to embrace

  1415. a humble

  1416. spirit

  1417. in submission

  1418. to God

  1419. as we

  1420. wait

  1421. for him

  1422. we also

  1423. wait

  1424. with

  1425. confession

  1426. look at

  1427. verse 11

  1428. which says

  1429. for your

  1430. name's sake

  1431. oh Lord

  1432. pardon my

  1433. guilt

  1434. for it

  1435. is great

  1436. and in

  1437. verse 18

  1438. consider

  1439. my

  1440. affliction

  1441. and my

  1442. trouble

  1443. and forgive

  1444. all my

  1445. sins

  1446. we've already

  1447. seen that we

  1448. can pour out

  1449. our struggles

  1450. with sin

  1451. to God

  1452. we wait

  1453. for God

  1454. to wait

  1455. for God

  1456. with confession

  1457. means that we

  1458. recognize that

  1459. sin damages

  1460. our relationship

  1461. with God

  1462. and creates

  1463. interference

  1464. between us

  1465. yes

  1466. we can

  1467. and we

  1468. should

  1469. bring sin

  1470. and guilt

  1471. before God

  1472. but not

  1473. simply to

  1474. offload it

  1475. as if to

  1476. try to get

  1477. it off of

  1478. our chest

  1479. like some

  1480. sort of

  1481. therapeutic

  1482. experience

  1483. rather the

  1484. way we

  1485. bring sin

  1486. and guilt

  1487. before God

  1488. is with

  1489. confession

  1490. and with

  1491. repentance

  1492. we take

  1493. responsibility

  1494. for our

  1495. sin

  1496. and for

  1497. sin's

  1498. consequences

  1499. we say

  1500. sorry

  1501. sincerely

  1502. desiring

  1503. to turn

  1504. away

  1505. from that

  1506. sin

  1507. and trusting

  1508. that in

  1509. God's mercy

  1510. and his

  1511. steadfast love

  1512. that he

  1513. will pardon

  1514. us

  1515. and bring

  1516. forgiveness

  1517. and power

  1518. to overcome

  1519. sin

  1520. through the

  1521. atonement

  1522. of his

  1523. son

  1524. Jesus

  1525. Christ

  1526. to which

  1527. we will

  1528. return more

  1529. in just a

  1530. moment

  1531. now these

  1532. verses

  1533. don't mean

  1534. that each

  1535. and every

  1536. time we

  1537. want to

  1538. pour out

  1539. our souls

  1540. to God

  1541. we have

  1542. to list

  1543. this kind

  1544. of long

  1545. catalogue

  1546. of old

  1547. sins

  1548. reconfessing

  1549. things as

  1550. we go

  1551. each and

  1552. every time

  1553. as if

  1554. we didn't

  1555. do it

  1556. right

  1557. the first

  1558. time

  1559. or in

  1560. case

  1561. that's

  1562. just

  1563. what

  1564. God

  1565. needs

  1566. us

  1567. to do

  1568. rather

  1569. these

  1570. verses

  1571. mean

  1572. that we

  1573. should

  1574. never

  1575. lose

  1576. sight

  1577. of

  1578. the

  1579. fact

  1580. that we

  1581. are

  1582. forgiven

  1583. sinners

  1584. undeserving

  1585. of God's

  1586. help

  1587. apart

  1588. from

  1589. his

  1590. mercy

  1591. and

  1592. his

  1593. love

  1594. with

  1595. no

  1596. right

  1597. to

  1598. expect

  1599. God

  1600. to

  1601. work

  1602. to

  1603. our

  1604. timeline

  1605. so

  1606. we

  1607. wait

  1608. patiently

  1609. for

  1610. his

  1611. thirdly

  1612. we

  1613. wait

  1614. with

  1615. obedience

  1616. verse

  1617. 10

  1618. says

  1619. all

  1620. the

  1621. paths

  1622. of

  1623. the

  1624. Lord

  1625. are

  1626. steadfast

  1627. love

  1628. and

  1629. faithfulness

  1630. for

  1631. those

  1632. who

  1633. keep

  1634. his

  1635. covenant

  1636. and

  1637. his

  1638. testimonies

  1639. and

  1640. in

  1641. verse

  1642. 21

  1643. says

  1644. may

  1645. integrity

  1646. and

  1647. uprightness

  1648. preserve

  1649. me

  1650. for

  1651. I

  1652. wait

  1653. for

  1654. you

  1655. even

  1656. if

  1657. you're

  1658. seeking

  1659. God's

  1660. direction

  1661. for

  1662. a

  1663. very

  1664. specific

  1665. path

  1666. and

  1667. guidance

  1668. and

  1669. it's

  1670. unclear

  1671. to

  1672. you

  1673. nevertheless

  1674. he

  1675. has

  1676. clearly

  1677. given

  1678. us

  1679. guidance

  1680. for

  1681. the

  1682. way

  1683. of

  1684. godliness

  1685. in

  1686. his

  1687. word

  1688. and

  1689. we

  1690. can

  1691. wait

  1692. for

  1693. God

  1694. while

  1695. walking

  1696. out

  1697. the

  1698. way

  1699. of

  1700. holiness

  1701. now

  1702. clearly

  1703. that

  1704. can't

  1705. mean

  1706. that

  1707. God

  1708. only

  1709. guides

  1710. and

  1711. preserves

  1712. the

  1713. perfect

  1714. those

  1715. who

  1716. perfectly

  1717. obey

  1718. him

  1719. we've

  1720. just

  1721. looked

  1722. at

  1723. how

  1724. God

  1725. extends

  1726. forgiveness

  1727. to

  1728. the

  1729. sinner

  1730. but

  1731. it

  1732. does

  1733. mean

  1734. that

  1735. forgiveness

  1736. is not

  1737. an

  1738. excuse

  1739. for

  1740. ongoing

  1741. disobedience

  1742. God

  1743. desires

  1744. his

  1745. children

  1746. to

  1747. enjoy

  1748. blessing

  1749. that

  1750. carry

  1751. on

  1752. from

  1753. generation

  1754. to

  1755. generation

  1756. look at

  1757. verse

  1758. 13

  1759. he says

  1760. his

  1761. soul

  1762. shall

  1763. abide

  1764. in

  1765. well

  1766. being

  1767. and

  1768. his

  1769. offspring

  1770. shall

  1771. inherit

  1772. the

  1773. land

  1774. but

  1775. God

  1776. has

  1777. made

  1778. clear

  1779. that

  1780. those

  1781. blessings

  1782. his love

  1783. and his

  1784. faithfulness

  1785. are found

  1786. in the

  1787. context

  1788. of his

  1789. ways

  1790. and we

  1791. must be

  1792. obedient

  1793. to walk

  1794. in those

  1795. ways

  1796. to enjoy

  1797. those blessings

  1798. for ourselves

  1799. and that

  1800. means that

  1801. when God's

  1802. ways don't

  1803. seem popular

  1804. in the world

  1805. around us

  1806. or the ways

  1807. of our

  1808. foes

  1809. who oppose

  1810. us

  1811. seem to be

  1812. very productive

  1813. in the short

  1814. term

  1815. even though

  1816. they oppose

  1817. God

  1818. it means

  1819. it means that

  1820. with fear

  1821. and humility

  1822. before God

  1823. we don't

  1824. abandon

  1825. his ways

  1826. to take

  1827. up the

  1828. ways

  1829. of the

  1830. wicked

  1831. but we

  1832. continue

  1833. to submit

  1834. ourselves

  1835. to God's

  1836. ways

  1837. in obedience

  1838. and we

  1839. wait

  1840. for him

  1841. the final

  1842. thread

  1843. in terms

  1844. of waiting

  1845. is we

  1846. wait

  1847. with

  1848. faith

  1849. look at the

  1850. opening

  1851. verses

  1852. of our

  1853. psalm

  1854. verse 1

  1855. says

  1856. to you

  1857. oh Lord

  1858. I lift

  1859. up my

  1860. soul

  1861. oh my

  1862. God

  1863. in you

  1864. I trust

  1865. let me

  1866. not be

  1867. put

  1868. to shame

  1869. we

  1870. wait

  1871. for God

  1872. with

  1873. faith

  1874. just as

  1875. the

  1876. psalmist

  1877. does

  1878. who

  1879. wasn't

  1880. trusting

  1881. in who

  1882. he

  1883. was

  1884. or what

  1885. he

  1886. had

  1887. done

  1888. to

  1889. deserve

  1890. God's

  1891. counsel

  1892. God's

  1893. care

  1894. and God's

  1895. comfort

  1896. but who

  1897. trusted

  1898. in who

  1899. God

  1900. was

  1901. in God's

  1902. steadfast

  1903. love

  1904. and his

  1905. unchanging

  1906. goodness

  1907. and mercy

  1908. now the

  1909. psalmist

  1910. had God's

  1911. word

  1912. revealed

  1913. to him

  1914. as it

  1915. was

  1916. in that

  1917. time

  1918. and we

  1919. have that

  1920. too

  1921. but we

  1922. also have

  1923. the fullness

  1924. of God's

  1925. word revealed

  1926. to us

  1927. in his

  1928. son

  1929. Jesus

  1930. Christ

  1931. and we

  1932. have the

  1933. full

  1934. revelation

  1935. of his

  1936. gospel

  1937. on which

  1938. to base

  1939. our hope

  1940. in which

  1941. to pour

  1942. out our

  1943. souls

  1944. and our

  1945. struggles

  1946. to God

  1947. to trust

  1948. that he

  1949. hears us

  1950. that he

  1951. wants good

  1952. for us

  1953. and to

  1954. wait on

  1955. him

  1956. in faith

  1957. and we

  1958. can do

  1959. that because

  1960. we know

  1961. that there

  1962. was one

  1963. who poured

  1964. out his

  1965. soul

  1966. to God

  1967. in the

  1968. form of

  1969. another

  1970. song

  1971. of lament

  1972. and yet

  1973. was not

  1974. heard

  1975. by his

  1976. father

  1977. in order

  1978. that we

  1979. could be

  1980. both the

  1981. gospels of

  1982. Matthew

  1983. and Mark

  1984. record

  1985. Jesus'

  1986. words as

  1987. he hung

  1988. on the

  1989. cross

  1990. words taken

  1991. from Psalm

  1992. 22

  1993. my

  1994. God

  1995. my

  1996. God

  1997. why

  1998. have

  1999. you

  2000. forsaken

  2001. me

  2002. the

  2003. one

  2004. who

  2005. had

  2006. every

  2007. reason

  2008. to

  2009. expect

  2010. his

  2011. father's

  2012. counsel

  2013. his

  2014. father's

  2015. care

  2016. and his

  2017. father's

  2018. comfort

  2019. was

  2020. denied

  2021. all of

  2022. these

  2023. blessings

  2024. choosing

  2025. instead

  2026. to bear

  2027. the sin

  2028. and the

  2029. guilt

  2030. of man

  2031. and to

  2032. endure

  2033. the full

  2034. measure

  2035. of God's

  2036. wrath

  2037. against

  2038. those

  2039. things

  2040. so that

  2041. we

  2042. could

  2043. escape

  2044. them

  2045. and

  2046. Jesus'

  2047. resurrection

  2048. to new

  2049. life

  2050. declares

  2051. loudly

  2052. that

  2053. his

  2054. mission

  2055. is

  2056. accomplished

  2057. that

  2058. God

  2059. wants

  2060. there

  2061. to be

  2062. no

  2063. doubts

  2064. for

  2065. those

  2066. who

  2067. trust

  2068. that

  2069. Jesus

  2070. paid

  2071. their

  2072. penalty

  2073. for

  2074. their

  2075. sin

  2076. who

  2077. turned

  2078. from

  2079. their

  2080. sin

  2081. and

  2082. to

  2083. seek

  2084. to

  2085. live

  2086. out

  2087. the

  2088. new

  2089. life

  2090. available

  2091. to

  2092. us

  2093. in

  2094. Jesus

  2095. Christ

  2096. God

  2097. wants

  2098. there

  2099. to

  2100. be

  2101. no

  2102. doubt

  2103. that

  2104. we

  2105. can

  2106. pour

  2107. out

  2108. our

  2109. soul

  2110. and

  2111. our

  2112. struggles

  2113. to

  2114. him

  2115. because

  2116. of

  2117. his

  2118. steadfast

  2119. love

  2120. and

  2121. goodness

  2122. to

  2123. us

  2124. in

  2125. his

  2126. son

  2127. Jesus

  2128. Christ

  2129. brothers and

  2130. sisters

  2131. as we

  2132. journey

  2133. through

  2134. God's

  2135. path

  2136. through

  2137. this

  2138. life

  2139. we

  2140. should

  2141. expect

  2142. to

  2143. face

  2144. trials

  2145. and

  2146. struggles

  2147. of

  2148. many

  2149. kinds

  2150. and

  2151. psalms

  2152. of

  2153. lament
