  1. We are in Proverbs chapter 21.

    Proverbs 21 chapter mention

  2. We ended at verse 2 last week.

  3. We're going to start there and go all the way to verse 31.

  4. Let me pray for the reading and preaching of God's Word.

  5. Father, we confess that your wisdom often confounds our human wisdom.

  6. Your grace, your lavish mercy confounds our sense of what should be.

  7. Because your ways are not our ways.

  8. As far as the heavens are higher than the earth, your ways are higher than our ways.

  9. And so, Lord, we do not approach your Word arrogantly,

  10. seeking to conform it to our own liking.

  11. But, Lord, we approach it humbly,

  12. wanting to submit ourselves to your will, to your kingship.

  13. So please address us now in the reading and preaching of your Word.

  14. In Jesus' name we pray.

  15. Amen.

  16. Proverbs 21, verses 2 to 31.

    Proverbs 21:2–31

  17. Every way of a man is right in his own eyes,

  18. but the Lord weighs the heart.

  19. To do righteousness and justice

  20. is more acceptable to the Lord than sacrifice.

  21. Haughty eyes and a proud heart,

  22. the lamp of the wicked are sin.

  23. The plans of the diligent lead surely to abundance,

  24. but everyone who is hasty comes only to poverty.

  25. The getting of treasures by a lying tongue

  26. is a fleeting vapor and a snare of death.

  27. The violence of the wicked will sweep them away

  28. because they refuse to do what is just.

  29. The way of the guilty is crooked,

  30. but the conduct of the pure is upright.

  31. It is better to live in a corner of the housetop

  32. than in a house shared with a quarrelsome wife.

  33. The soul of the wicked desires evil.

  34. His neighbor finds no mercy in his eyes.

  35. When a scoffer is punished,

  36. the simple becomes wise.

  37. When a wise man is instructed,

  38. he gains knowledge.

  39. The righteous one observes the house of the wicked.

  40. He throws the wicked down to ruin.

  41. Whoever closes his ear to the cry of the poor

  42. will himself call out and not be answered.

  43. A gift in secret averts anger

  44. and a concealed bribe strong wrath.

  45. When justice is done,

  46. it is a joy to the righteous,

  47. but terror to evildoers.

  48. One who wanders from the way of good sense

  49. will rest in the assembly of the dead.

  50. Whoever loves pleasure will be a poor man.

  51. He who loves wine and oil will not be rich.

  52. The wicked is a ransom for the righteous

  53. and the traitor for the upright.

  54. It is better to live in a desert land

  55. than with the quarrelsome and fretful woman.

  56. Precious treasure and oil are in a wise man's dwelling,

  57. but a foolish man devours it.

  58. Whoever pursues righteousness and kindness

  59. will find life, righteousness, and honor.

  60. A wise man scales the city of the mighty

  61. and brings down the stronghold in which they trust.

  62. Whoever keeps his mouth and his tongue

  63. keeps himself out of trouble.

  64. Scoffer is the name of the arrogant,

  65. haughty man who acts with arrogant pride.

  66. The desire of the sluggard kills him,

  67. for his hands refuse to labor.

  68. All day long he craves and craves,

  69. but the righteous gives and does not hold back.

  70. The sacrifice of the wicked is an abomination.

  71. How much more when he brings it with evil intent?

  72. A false witness will perish,

  73. but the word of a man who hears will endure.

  74. A wicked man puts on a bold face,

  75. but the upright gives thought to his ways.

  76. No wisdom, no understanding,

  77. no counsel can avail against the Lord.

  78. The horse is made ready for the day of battle,

  79. but the victory belongs to the Lord.

  80. God's holy and authoritative word.

  81. Justice is a buzzword nowadays.

  82. Using Google Books and Graham Viewer,

  83. you can search for words or phrases

  84. from over 25 million of their digitized books

  85. to analyze trends.

  86. And if you search for the phrase social justice,

  87. you see steady growth in the use of the phrase

  88. starting in the 20th century,

  89. with sharp exponential growth happening

  90. starting in around 2000, 2004.

  91. And using LexisNexis,

  92. that's the name of a company,

  93. their database,

  94. which has over 82 billion legal

  95. and public records related documents,

  96. you can do a similar search of popular publications

  97. like the New York Times,

  98. which yields very similar results.

  99. Between 2000 and 2020,

  100. the number of articles

  101. mentioning the phrase social justice

  102. spiked from about 170 a year

  103. to 800 per year.

  104. And you see the same exponential growth

  105. with other often associated phrases

  106. such as white privilege,

  107. male privilege, etc.

  108. Some pundits call this the great awokening.

  109. Now, justice is undoubtedly a hot issue,

  110. but what exactly is justice?

  111. Everybody seems to agree

  112. that justice is a good thing,

  113. but people disagree vehemently

  114. about what it should look like

  115. and how it should be attained.

  116. How should a Christian think about justice?

  117. What does it look like for the Christian

  118. as we are commanded to do

  119. in Micah 6, verse 8,

    Micah 6:8

  120. to do justice and to love kindness

  121. and to walk humbly with our God?

  122. Our passage for today

  123. answers some of those questions for us.

  124. And its main point is this,

  125. that we should do righteousness and justice

  126. trusting that God will fight on our behalf.

  127. First, we see the sacrifice of the righteous

  128. in verses 2 to 8,

  129. the ransom for the righteous

  130. in verses 9 to 18,

  131. and finally the reward of the righteous

  132. in verses 19 to 31.

  133. This passage begins with a twofold mention

  134. of the Lord in verses 2 to 3

  135. and verses 30 to 31.

  136. The book ends the passage

  137. showing God's sovereignty over this entire thing

  138. of justice, of human society, over it.

  139. And it says in verses 2 to 3,

  140. every way of a man is right in his own eyes,

  141. but the Lord weighs the heart.

  142. To do righteousness and justice

  143. is more acceptable to the Lord

  144. than sacrifice.

  145. Immediately, this sets off a sharp distinction

  146. between the biblical understanding of justice

  147. and our cultural understanding of justice.

  148. Righteousness and justice

  149. are not standards that are determined by man.

  150. It's determined by God.

  151. Why?

  152. Because every way of a man

  153. is right in his own eyes.

  154. In our community group this past Friday,

  155. we talked about how this proverb

  156. reminded us of the refrain in the book of Judges,

  157. that in those days,

  158. there was no king in Israel.

  159. Everyone did what was right in his own eyes.

  160. This is the consequence

  161. whenever a sinful human being

  162. refuses to submit to Christ the King.

  163. Every man for himself.

  164. A sinful human being

  165. is incapable of correctly defining

  166. righteousness and justice

  167. because he is too prideful.

  168. He is too self-righteous.

  169. He is too biased toward himself.

  170. Only the Lord who weighs the heart

  171. can be the true judge.

  172. Only he can be the arbiter of justice.

  173. This reality runs contrary to popular opinion

  174. because we live in a functionally atheistic society

  175. that tries to untether

  176. its ethical system from God's law.

  177. Once you lose that vertical accountability to God,

  178. what God says is right and just,

  179. once you're untethered from that,

  180. then all you have left

  181. is horizontal accountability.

  182. You should do no harm to other people.

  183. So then, to give you an example,

  184. the entire realm of sexual ethics, for example,

  185. gets reduced to consent.

  186. In this context,

  187. there is no higher law

  188. by which people can say

  189. fornication

  190. or homosexual relations

  191. or adultery

  192. or pornography

  193. is immoral.

  194. There's no basis for that.

  195. No one can say

  196. that that is sin

  197. because God has been removed

  198. from the picture.

  199. All they can ask is,

  200. was it consensual?

  201. Did your boyfriend or girlfriend

  202. consent to it?

  203. Well then,

  204. it's fine

  205. even if you're not married.

  206. Did the other man or woman

  207. consent to the same-sex relationship?

  208. Well then,

  209. it's fine

  210. because

  211. you get to choose

  212. whomever you want to love.

  213. Did your husband or wife

  214. consent to it?

  215. Well then,

  216. it's not adultery.

  217. That's an open marriage.

  218. Was the pornography marriage,

  219. the pornography video rather,

  220. legally produced

  221. and distributed

  222. with the consent

  223. of all the individuals

  224. involved in it?

  225. Well then,

  226. there's nothing wrong with it.

  227. It's just business.

  228. This is a woefully inadequate

  229. and unreliable

  230. standard of ethics.

  231. It is the Lord,

  232. not man,

  233. that sets the standard

  234. for righteousness

  235. and justice.

  236. Verse 3 says,

  237. To do righteousness

  238. and justice

  239. is more acceptable

  240. to the Lord

  241. than sacrifice.

  242. The words

  243. righteousness

  244. and justice

  245. are often paired together

  246. and have some

  247. overlap in meaning.

  248. But with the risk

  249. of oversimplification,

  250. one can say

  251. that righteousness

  252. refers to right living

  253. and justice

  254. refers to fair judgment.

  255. Deuteronomy 6,

    Deuteronomy 6:25

  256. verse 25 says,

  257. And it will be

  258. righteousness for us

  259. if we are careful

  260. to do all this commandment

  261. before the Lord our God

  262. as He has commanded us.

  263. So righteousness

  264. entails living

  265. in accordance

  266. with God's commands.

  267. Deuteronomy 16,

    Deuteronomy 16:19–20

  268. verses 19-20

  269. defines the word

  270. justice this way.

  271. You shall not

  272. pervert justice.

  273. You shall not

  274. show partiality.

  275. And you shall not

  276. accept a bribe,

  277. for bribe blinds

  278. the eyes of the wise

  279. and subverts

  280. the cause of the righteous.

  281. Justice,

  282. only justice,

  283. you shall follow.

  284. So justice entails

  285. judging everyone,

  286. whether they're rich

  287. or poor,

  288. man or a woman,

  289. strong or weak,

  290. white or black,

  291. on their own merits

  292. rather than

  293. showing partiality.

  294. It means to give people

  295. what is their rightful due.

  296. That's why in Genesis 18-25,

  297. Abraham reasons with God

  298. this way,

  299. Far be from you

  300. to do such a thing

  301. to put the righteous

  302. to death

  303. with the wicked,

  304. so that the righteous

  305. fare as the wicked.

  306. Far be that from you.

  307. Shall not the judge

  308. of all the earth

  309. do what is just?

  310. To do what is just

  311. is to give people

  312. what is their due.

  313. To punish the righteous

  314. along with the wicked

  315. would be an injustice

  316. because it's not

  317. judging people

  318. fairly based on their merits.

  319. We'll unpack

  320. these two terms further

  321. in the following verses,

  322. but these are

  323. good working definitions

  324. for now

  325. to understand

  326. what this means.

  327. In verse 3,

  328. to do righteousness

  329. and justice

  330. is more acceptable

  331. to the Lord

  332. than sacrifice.

  333. This comparative construction

  334. takes something

  335. that is otherwise

  336. considered good,

  337. in this case sacrifice,

  338. and compares it

  339. to something

  340. that is even better,

  341. righteousness

  342. and justice,

  343. in order to emphasize

  344. just how important

  345. that really is.

  346. Sacrifice is not unimportant.

  347. It is commanded by God,

  348. as we see clearly

  349. in Leviticus chapters 1-7.

    Leviticus 1 chapter mention

  350. But to do righteousness

  351. and justice

  352. is more acceptable

  353. to the Lord

  354. than even sacrifice.

  355. And this truth,

  356. this is not an isolated incident,

  357. this truth echoes

  358. again and again

  359. throughout many pages

  360. of Scripture.

  361. God does not care

  362. for empty rituals

  363. devoid of sincere devotion.

  364. God does not care

  365. for worship

  366. without obedience.

  367. That you are joining us

  368. this Sunday,

  369. whether here in person

  370. or virtually,

  371. is a good thing.

  372. It is commendable.

  373. God commands it.

  374. And it's indispensable

  375. for your perseverance

  376. and faith.

  377. But is the rest

  378. of your life,

  379. Monday through Saturday,

  380. consistent with the faith

  381. that you profess?

  382. Does your day-to-day life

  383. bear out the truth

  384. that you sing

  385. on Sunday morning

  386. during the worship service?

  387. If people were to observe

  388. your life,

  389. would they conclude

  390. that you love God

  391. with your whole heart?

  392. Would they even know

  393. that you are a Christian?

  394. Verse 27 escalates this further.

  395. The sacrifice of the wicked

  396. is an abomination.

  397. How much more

  398. when he brings it

  399. with evil intent?

  400. Why do you,

  401. it's helpful to ask,

  402. why do the wicked

  403. even bother

  404. to bring a sacrifice

  405. to God?

  406. They do it

  407. to preserve

  408. a sense,

  409. a semblance

  410. of piety

  411. and respectability.

  412. They do it

  413. to maintain

  414. their own credibility

  415. in order to advance

  416. further their evil agenda.

  417. But the Lord

  418. abominates

  419. such sacrifice.

  420. He rejects

  421. hypocritical worship.

  422. God cannot be

  423. any more emphatic

  424. than Amos chapter 5

    Amos 5:21–24

  425. verses 21 to 24.

  426. I hate,

  427. I despise

  428. your feasts

  429. and I take no delight

  430. in your solemn assemblies.

  431. Even though you offer me

  432. your burnt offerings

  433. and grain offerings,

  434. I will not accept them.

  435. And the peace offerings

  436. of your fat animals,

  437. I will not look upon them.

  438. Take away from me

  439. the noise of your songs

  440. to the melody

  441. of your harps,

  442. I will not listen.

  443. But let justice

  444. roll down like waters

  445. and righteousness

  446. like an ever-flowing stream.

  447. Are you living rightly

  448. in your relationship

  449. with God and man?

  450. Are you judging fairly

  451. and giving people

  452. what is their rightful due?

  453. According to Jesus,

  454. even in the New Testament,

  455. Mark chapter 12 verse 33,

    Mark 12:33

  456. to love God

  457. with all of your heart,

  458. with all the understanding

  459. and with all the strength

  460. and to love one's neighbor

  461. as oneself

  462. is much more

  463. than all whole burnt offerings

  464. and sacrifices.

  465. You may have

  466. a faith, sure,

  467. but is there love

  468. and good works

  469. to accompany it?

  470. Do you love your neighbors

  471. enough to serve them,

  472. to share the gospel

  473. of Jesus Christ

  474. with them?

  475. Is your work

  476. characterized by integrity?

  477. Is your spending

  478. characterized by generosity?

  479. Are your relationships

  480. characterized by selflessness?

  481. God cares intensely

  482. about how you live.

  483. God is jealous

  484. that you love Him

  485. with your whole heart.

  486. God insists

  487. on your total allegiance.

  488. The sacrifice

  489. of the righteous

  490. is not merely

  491. a cultic thing.

  492. It entails

  493. an ethic.

  494. That's why Romans 12 verse 1

    Romans 12:1

  495. says,

  496. I appeal to you,

  497. therefore,

  498. brothers,

  499. by the mercies of God

  500. to present your bodies

  501. as a living sacrifice,

  502. holy and acceptable

  503. to God,

  504. which is your

  505. spiritual worship.

  506. Then,

  507. Solomon gives

  508. some specific examples

  509. of this in verses 4 to 8.

  510. Verse 4 says,

  511. Haughty eyes

  512. and a proud heart,

  513. the lamp of the wicked,

  514. are sin.

  515. Like verse 2,

  516. this verse also mentions

  517. the eyes and the heart.

  518. And earlier,

  519. in Proverbs 20,

    Proverbs 20:17

  520. verse 17,

  521. it mentioned

  522. the spirit of man

  523. as the lamp

  524. of the Lord.

  525. That God,

  526. to God,

  527. even the inner,

  528. the hidden inner person,

  529. the spirit of man

  530. is illuminated.

  531. He uses it

  532. to search

  533. our innermost parts.

  534. So this verse

  535. is continuing

  536. that imagery.

  537. It's saying that

  538. the God who exposes

  539. the spirit of the wicked,

  540. the God who weighs

  541. the proud heart,

  542. the God who sees

  543. the haughty eyes,

  544. denounces them

  545. altogether as sin.

  546. Something that misses

  547. the mark,

  548. the standard that He

  549. has set for us

  550. to meet.

  551. Those with haughty eyes

  552. and a proud heart

  553. forsake righteousness

  554. and justice.

  555. This is evident

  556. in their greed.

  557. Look at verses 5 to 6

  558. with me.

  559. The plans of the diligent

  560. lead surely to abundance,

  561. but everyone who is hasty

  562. comes only to poverty.

  563. The getting of treasures

  564. by a lying tongue

  565. is a fleeting vapor

  566. and a snare of death.

  567. Here we see

  568. that the righteous

  569. are diligent

  570. and that the wicked

  571. are hasty

  572. in their attempt

  573. to gain wealth,

  574. which reveals

  575. their greed.

  576. They are willing

  577. to take shortcuts.

  578. They are willing

  579. to cheat others.

  580. They are because

  581. they believe

  582. that the end

  583. justifies the means.

  584. So they get treasures

  585. by a lying tongue,

  586. but this is ultimately,

  587. this passage teaches us,

  588. futile

  589. because of God's justice.

  590. Whoever is quick

  591. to breathe out lies

  592. in order to gain

  593. an advantage over others

  594. will learn that

  595. their wealth

  596. is but a breath,

  597. a fleeting vapor

  598. that vanishes

  599. in a moment.

  600. He comes only

  601. to poverty

  602. and gets caught

  603. in a snare of death

  604. in contrast

  605. to the righteous

  606. who,

  607. through patient

  608. diligence,

  609. not hasty schemes,

  610. arrives at wealth.

  611. Verses 7 to 8

  612. continue this theme

  613. of divine retribution.

  614. The violence

  615. of the wicked

  616. will sweep them away

  617. because they refuse

  618. to do what is just.

  619. The way of the guilty

  620. is crooked,

  621. but the conduct

  622. of the pure

  623. is upright.

  624. Though the wicked

  625. do violence

  626. to others,

  627. in order to get

  628. their way,

  629. in God's poetic justice,

  630. they will be undone

  631. by their own violence.

  632. As all of you know,

  633. the shortest distance

  634. between two points

  635. is a straight line.

  636. Though the guilty

  637. try to take shortcuts,

  638. their way is crooked,

  639. so they end up

  640. going the long way around

  641. and in fact

  642. never arrive

  643. at their destination.

  644. In contrast,

  645. the conduct

  646. of the pure

  647. is upright.

  648. It's literally

  649. straight.

  650. They are the ones

  651. who will prosper

  652. in the end.

  653. And then in verses

  654. 9 to 18,

  655. Solomon talks about

  656. the ruin of the wicked

  657. and how they will become

  658. the ransom

  659. for the righteous.

  660. But between these sections,

  661. we find an unexpected verse.

  662. Verse 9 says,

  663. It is better to live

  664. in a corner

  665. of the housetop

  666. than in a house

  667. shared with

  668. a quarrelsome wife.

  669. This same surprising thing

  670. happens between

  671. the next two sections

  672. of this passage as well.

  673. It says in verse 19,

  674. It is better

  675. to live in a desert land

  676. than with a quarrelsome

  677. and fretful woman.

  678. And these verses,

  679. if you're like me

  680. and you're just reading

  681. through it,

  682. come out of the blue,

  683. don't they?

  684. Like, what in the world

  685. is going on?

  686. What does this have to do

  687. with righteousness

  688. and justice?

  689. That's the theme

  690. of this passage.

  691. One of the most

  692. prominent metaphors

  693. in this book,

  694. in the book of Proverbs,

  695. is that of the woman

  696. or the wife

  697. as a personification

  698. of either

  699. wisdom or folly.

  700. So, for example,

  701. in Proverbs 8.35,

  702. Lady Wisdom says,

  703. Whoever finds me

  704. finds life

  705. and obtains favor

  706. from the Lord.

  707. And this was paralleled

  708. as we saw

  709. in chapter 18,

  710. verse 22.

  711. He who finds a wife

  712. finds a good thing

  713. and obtains favor

  714. from the Lord.

  715. So often,

  716. literary units

  717. within Proverbs

  718. begin with an exhortation

  719. to listen to

  720. or find wisdom.

  721. And sometimes,

  722. that's substituted

  723. by Proverbs

  724. about the wife

  725. as the organizing principle.

  726. Solomon's doing

  727. the same thing here.

  728. The comparison format

  729. of verses 9 and 19

  730. bring to mind

  731. the comparison

  732. of verse 3,

  733. which began

  734. the first section

  735. of this chapter.

  736. To do righteousness

  737. and justice

  738. is better,

  739. is more acceptable

  740. to the Lord

  741. than sacrifice.

  742. It is better

  743. to live

  744. in a corner

  745. of a housetop

  746. than in a house

  747. shared with a quarrelsome wife.

  748. It is better

  749. to live

  750. in a desert land

  751. than with a quarrelsome

  752. and fretful woman.

  753. Even though Proverbs

  754. speaks repeatedly

  755. of the fact

  756. that it is a good thing

  757. to find a wife,

  758. a wise wife,

  759. just that it's a good thing

  760. to find wisdom

  761. and that both things

  762. are a gift

  763. from the Lord.

  764. Having no wife

  765. is better

  766. than having a quarrelsome

  767. and foolish one.

  768. Living in a corner

  769. of the housetop

  770. like living

  771. in the desert land

  772. is a lonesome

  773. and tiresome experience.

  774. It means being exposed

  775. to the harsh elements,

  776. to the beating rain,

  777. to the scorching sun,

  778. and yet,

  779. the Proverbs tell us,

  780. such a life

  781. is better

  782. than sharing a house

  783. with a quarrelsome wife.

  784. This makes

  785. the obvious point

  786. that a wife

  787. should strive

  788. to cultivate

  789. the gentle

  790. and quiet spirit

  791. that 1 Peter 3,

    1 Peter 3:4

  792. verse 4 tells us

  793. is very precious

  794. in God's sight,

  795. but it makes

  796. another less obvious

  797. point.

  798. Having the semblance

  799. of respectability

  800. by having a wife

  801. to share a home with,

  802. having the appearance

  803. of wisdom,

  804. being a scoffer

  805. who acts like

  806. he already has

  807. all the wisdom

  808. he needs

  809. is worse

  810. than being unmarried

  811. and unsheltered,

  812. is worse

  813. than being known

  814. as a simpleton

  815. who lacks wisdom.

  816. It is better

  817. not to offer

  818. sacrifices at all

  819. than to offer

  820. disingenuous sacrifices.

  821. It is better

  822. not to worship

  823. than to worship

  824. hypocritically

  825. without doing

  826. righteousness

  827. and justice.

  828. Verses 10 to 12

  829. continue,

  830. The soul of the wicked

  831. desires evil.

  832. His neighbor

  833. finds no mercy

  834. in his eyes.

  835. When a scoffer

  836. is punished,

  837. the simple

  838. becomes wise.

  839. When a wise man

  840. is instructed,

  841. he gains knowledge.

  842. The righteous one

  843. observes the house

  844. of the wicked.

  845. He throws the wicked

  846. down to ruin.

  847. Verses 10 and 12

  848. repeat the words

  849. wicked and evil

  850. to bracket these verses.

  851. And the word ruin

  852. in verse 12

  853. is the same Hebrew word

  854. that is translated

  855. evil in verse 10.

  856. And this repetition

  857. highlights once again

  858. God's poetic justice.

  859. The soul of the wicked

  860. desires evil

  861. to bring evil

  862. upon others.

  863. But God overthrows

  864. the wicked

  865. down to evil.

  866. In other words,

  867. they get what

  868. was coming to them.

  869. And since righteousness

  870. includes obeying

  871. and imitating

  872. the righteous one,

  873. it requires mercy

  874. toward our neighbors.

  875. But the wicked person

  876. finds no mercy

  877. in his eyes

  878. for his neighbor.

  879. And once again,

  880. here we see

  881. three types of people

  882. that appear

  883. again and again

  884. throughout the book

  885. of Proverbs.

  886. The scoffer,

  887. the simple,

  888. and the wise.

  889. As we saw in 1925,

  890. the scoffer

  891. is the close-minded person,

  892. the proud.

  893. The simple

  894. is empty-minded,

  895. and the wise person

  896. is open-minded.

  897. The scoffer,

  898. as verse 24 says,

  899. is a haughty man

  900. who acts

  901. with arrogant pride.

  902. He is brazen.

  903. He's fixed

  904. in his sinful,

  905. erroneous ways.

  906. And for this reason,

  907. the scoffer

  908. never learns,

  909. even when he is punished.

  910. But if justice

  911. is executed,

  912. it's upheld,

  913. and the wicked

  914. are punished.

  915. The simple

  916. who sees that

  917. and learn,

  918. sees the wicked

  919. punished,

  920. sees the scoffer

  921. punished,

  922. will learn

  923. and become wise.

  924. In contrast,

  925. both the scoffer

  926. and the simple,

  927. a wise man

  928. only needs

  929. a word of instruction,

  930. and he gets

  931. wiser still.

  932. That's the hallmark

  933. of wisdom,

  934. humility,

  935. the receptiveness

  936. toward the word of God.

  937. The wisest among men

  938. is the most teachable

  939. before God,

  940. while the foolish scoffer

  941. is incorrigible.

  942. And it's better

  943. to be a simpleton

  944. whose ignorance

  945. is exposed

  946. than a scoffer

  947. whose folly

  948. is hidden,

  949. just as it is better

  950. to live in the corner

  951. of the housetop

  952. than in a house

  953. shared with the quarrelsome way.

  954. Then in verses 13-15,

  955. Solomon gives us

  956. more details

  957. about the demands

  958. of justice.

  959. Whoever closes

  960. his ear

  961. to the cry

  962. of the poor

  963. will himself

  964. call out

  965. and not be answered.

  966. A gift in secret

  967. averts anger

  968. and a concealed bribe

  969. strong wrath.

  970. When justice is done,

  971. it is a joy

  972. to the righteous

  973. but terror

  974. to evildoers.

  975. In order to do justice,

  976. and this is expanding

  977. our working definition

  978. of justice,

  979. we must not close

  980. our ears

  981. to the cry

  982. of the poor.

  983. Why?

  984. Because as we saw

  985. earlier in chapter 17,

  986. verse 5,

  987. whoever mocks

  988. the poor

  989. insults his maker.

  990. Because every human being,

  991. no matter how downtrodden

  992. and poor they are,

  993. is created in the image

  994. of Almighty God.

  995. There is a basic decency,

  996. basic respect

  997. that is owed to them,

  998. that is due to them,

  999. and that is not

  1000. merely a matter

  1001. of charity,

  1002. it is a matter

  1003. of justice.

  1004. And for that reason,

  1005. even though

  1006. bribes are often

  1007. effective

  1008. in this sinful world,

  1009. we must never

  1010. receive or take

  1011. bribes,

  1012. because doing so

  1013. subverts justice

  1014. for the poor

  1015. who cannot afford

  1016. to pay a bribe.

  1017. And when justice

  1018. is done,

  1019. it is a joy

  1020. to the righteous,

  1021. but terror

  1022. to evildoers,

  1023. because the righteous

  1024. know and can live

  1025. confidently

  1026. that their integrity

  1027. will be vindicated

  1028. in the end,

  1029. while the evildoers

  1030. will learn

1031. that they will be punished

  1032. for their wickedness.

  1033. Deuteronomy chapter 10,

    Deuteronomy 10 chapter mention

  1034. 17 to 19

  1035. says this,

  1036. The Lord your God

  1037. is God of gods

  1038. and Lord of lords,

  1039. the great,

  1040. the mighty,

  1041. and the awesome God

  1042. who is not partial

  1043. and takes no bribe.

  1044. He executes justice

  1045. for the fatherless

  1046. and the widow

  1047. and loves the sojourner,

  1048. giving him food

  1049. and clothing.

1050. This is a wonderful passage

  1051. because it juxtaposes

  1052. how high and mighty

  1053. God is,

  1054. God of gods

  1055. and Lord of lords,

  1056. the great,

  1057. mighty,

  1058. awesome God,

  1059. and it juxtaposes that

  1060. with people

  1061. who are most powerless

  1062. in society,

  1063. the fatherless,

  1064. the widow,

  1065. the sojourner,

  1066. the immigrant,

  1067. the most vulnerable

  1068. members of society,

  1069. whose rights

  1070. were often

  1071. disregarded by people,

  1072. by people

  1073. who were more empowered

  1074. and better resourced.

  1075. Giving them

  1076. what is their due,

  1077. these poor people,

  1078. as God defines it,

  1079. giving them legal protection,

  1080. giving them basic provision,

1081. this is not a matter

  1082. of charity,

  1083. it's a matter of justice,

  1084. giving them

  1085. what is their due.

  1086. This shows us

  1087. how nuanced

  1088. God's wisdom is,

  1089. how nuanced

  1090. the biblical picture

  1091. of justice is.

  1092. You can't

  1093. fit it neatly

  1094. into our conservative

  1095. or liberal

  1096. political categories.

  1097. On the one hand,

  1098. conservative economic

  1099. theorists

  1100. generally emphasize

  1101. individual responsibility

  1102. and believe

  1103. that the root

  1104. causes of poverty

  1105. are broken families,

  1106. character defects,

  1107. like lack of self-control

  1108. and laziness,

  1109. and bad habits

  1110. and lifestyles.

  1111. They would applaud

  1112. verses like

  1113. verse 5,

1114. The plans of the diligent

  1115. lead surely to abundance,

1116. but everyone who is hasty

  1117. comes only to poverty.

  1118. It's the lack

  1119. of diligence

  1120. and falling

  1121. forget-rich-quick schemes

  1122. that brings poverty.

  1123. Or verse 17,

  1124. Whoever loves pleasure

1125. will be a poor man.

1126. He who loves wine and oil

  1127. will not be rich.

1128. It's the love of pleasure,

  1129. a taste for luxury

  1130. that leads to poverty.

  1131. Or verse 20,

  1132. Precious treasure and oil

  1133. are in a wise man's dwelling,

  1134. but a foolish man

  1135. devours it.

  1136. It's undisciplined spending,

  1137. devouring one's goods

  1138. too quickly

  1139. that leads to poverty.

  1140. Or verse 25,

1141. The desire of the slugger

  1142. kills him,

1143. for his hand refuses to labor.

  1144. It's sluggishness,

  1145. indolence,

  1146. the unwillingness to work

  1147. that leads to poverty.

1148. And they would be right.

1149. And it's for this reason

  1150. they argue

  1151. that there being

  1152. prosperity for some

  1153. and poverty for some

  1154. they argue is just.

  1155. Because people are different.

  1156. Their work ethic

  1157. is different.

  1158. Their intelligence

  1159. is different.

  1160. Their character

  1161. is different.

  1162. So then engineering

  1163. equal outcomes

  1164. for different people

  1165. is to treat them

  1166. unequally,

  1167. which is inverted

  1168. injustice,

  1169. they argue.

  1170. On the other hand,

  1171. liberal economic theorists

  1172. generally emphasize

  1173. societal responsibility

  1174. and believe

  1175. that root causes

  1176. of poverty

  1177. are systemic injustices

  1178. beyond people's control,

  1179. such as racial prejudice,

  1180. joblessness,

  1181. educational deprivation,

  1182. mass incarceration,

  1183. redlining,

  1184. etc.

  1185. They would applaud

  1186. verses like

  1187. Proverbs 13, 23.

  1188. The fellow ground

  1189. of the poor

  1190. would yield much food,

1191. but it is swept away

  1192. through injustice.

  1193. It's the injustice

  1194. of the wicked

  1195. that wipes out

  1196. the gains

  1197. of the hardworking poor.

  1198. Or chapter 21,

  1199. verse 14,

  1200. in our passage,

  1201. a gift in secret

  1202. avert's anger

  1203. and a concealed bribe

  1204. strong wrath.

  1205. The judicial system

  1206. and the economic system

  1207. are both weighted

  1208. toward the powerful

  1209. and the wealthy,

  1210. keeping others

  1211. trapped in poverty.

  1212. And they, too,

  1213. would be right.

  1214. And for this reason,

  1215. they argue that

  1216. income inequality

  1217. is fundamentally unjust.

  1218. But they both

  1219. miss a part

  1220. of the picture

  1221. because Scripture

  1222. highlights both

  1223. individual responsibility

  1224. and societal responsibility.

  1225. Both individual sins

  1226. and systemic injustices.

  1227. The Christian

  1228. who seeks to do

  1229. righteousness

  1230. and justice

  1231. must recognize both.

  1232. And Proverbs

  1233. carefully makes

  1234. this distinction

  1235. consistently.

  1236. As I've said

  1237. several times

  1238. throughout this series,

  1239. while the word

  1240. poverty

  1241. is used

  1242. consistently

  1243. in a negative way

  1244. in Proverbs,

  1245. the word

  1246. poor

  1247. is used

  1248. consistently

  1249. in a positive way.

  1250. Poverty

  1251. in wisdom literature

  1252. is a result

  1253. of divine judgment

  1254. for sins

  1255. such as laziness,

  1256. stinginess,

  1257. love of luxury,

  1258. carelessness.

  1259. But the poor

  1260. are so

  1261. because of circumstances

  1262. that are outside

  1263. of their control,

  1264. such as

  1265. societal injustice.

  1266. and therefore

  1267. they receive

  1268. God's special

  1269. compassion and care.

  1270. Chapter 21,

  1271. verse 17

  1272. is not an exception

  1273. to this rule.

  1274. Even though the ESV

  1275. obfuscates this

  1276. by translating it

  1277. poor man,

  1278. that expression

  1279. is literally

  1280. in the Hebrew

  1281. man of poverty.

  1282. Whoever loves pleasure

  1283. will be a man

  1284. of poverty.

  1285. Yes,

  1286. the wicked

  1287. should come

  1288. to poverty.

  1289. That is just.

  1290. But we cannot

  1291. assume,

  1292. therefore,

  1293. that all poor

  1294. are wicked.

  1295. Instead,

  1296. our disposition

  1297. must be one

  1298. of mercy

  1299. because we serve

  1300. a God

  1301. who has been

  1302. merciful to us

  1303. even though

  1304. we were all

  1305. spiritually

  1306. impoverished.

  1307. God is described

  1308. as the defender

  1309. of the poor,

  1310. orphans,

  1311. widows,

  1312. and immigrants.

  1313. God will not

  1314. listen to the cries

  1315. of those who

  1316. refuse to listen

  1317. to the cry

  1318. of the poor.

  1319. The one who

  1320. wanders from

  1321. the way

  1322. of good sense,

  1323. though it might

  1324. seem like they're

  1325. doing just fine

  1326. for a while,

  1327. will ultimately

  1328. rest in the

  1329. assembly of the

  1330. dead,

  1331. as verse 16

  1332. says.

  1333. Because as

  1334. verse 18

  1335. says,

  1336. the wicked

  1337. is a ransom

  1338. for the righteous

  1339. and the traitor

  1340. for the upright.

  1341. The wicked

  1342. seek to sacrifice

  1343. the righteous

  1344. for their own

  1345. enrichment.

  1346. They seek to

  1347. use the righteous

  1348. as stepping

  1349. stones to

  1350. climb the

  1351. ladder of

  1352. society.

  1353. But in the

  1354. end,

  1355. they will be

  1356. reduced to a

  1357. ransom for

  1358. the righteous,

  1359. paying the

  1360. price for the

  1361. freedom,

  1362. the vindication,

  1363. and prosperity

  1364. of the righteous.

  1365. Having spoken

  1366. of the ruin of

  1367. the wicked,

  1368. how they become

  1369. the ransom for

  1370. the righteous,

  1371. Solomon finally

  1372. speaks of the

  1373. reward of the

  1374. righteous in

  1375. verses 19 to

  1376. 29,

  1377. which is again

  1378. introduced by a

  1379. better than proverb

  1380. about the

  1381. quarrelsome wife.

  1382. And then it

  1383. says in verse

  1384. 21,

  1385. whoever pursues

  1386. righteousness and

  1387. kindness will

  1388. find life,

  1389. righteousness,

  1390. and honor.

  1391. Once again,

  1392. the theme of

  1393. righteousness and

  1394. justice predominate

  1395. this passage.

  1396. And here,

  1397. righteousness is

  1398. paired with

  1399. kindness.

  1400. This is a

  1401. wonderful verse

  1402. with a pun on

  1403. the word

  1404. righteousness,

  1405. which depending

  1406. on the context

  1407. can also mean

  1408. vindication or

  1409. salvation.

  1410. So it says,

  1411. whoever pursues

  1412. righteousness and

  1413. kindness will

  1414. find life,

  1415. righteousness or

  1416. salvation,

  1417. vindication,

  1418. and honor.

  1419. It's teaching us

  1420. this, don't be

  1421. fixated on the

  1422. pursuit of honor,

  1423. on the pursuit of

  1424. health, on the

  1425. pursuit of wealth,

  1426. on the pursuit of

  1427. the worldly good

  1428. life.

  1429. Aim higher than

  1430. that.

  1431. Pursue instead

  1432. righteousness and

  1433. kindness.

  1434. Pursue instead

  1435. justice.

  1436. And then to

  1437. your surprise

  1438. and delight,

  1439. you will find

  1440. life, salvation,

  1441. and honor.

  1442. Look at verses

  1443. 25 to 26.

  1444. The desire of

  1445. the slugger kills

  1446. him.

  1447. The desire of the

  1448. slugger kills

  1449. him, for his

  1450. hands refuse to

  1451. labor.

  1452. All day long he

  1453. craves and

  1454. craves, but the

  1455. righteous gives

  1456. and does not

  1457. hold back.

  1458. The wicked are

  1459. defined by their

  1460. cravings.

  1461. The righteous

  1462. are defined by

  1463. their giving.

  1464. This is so

  1465. counterintuitive, but

  1466. it is wonderfully

  1467. true.

  1468. If you are

  1469. driven by your

  1470. cravings, if you

  1471. are concerned

  1472. primarily with

  1473. pursuing wealth

  1474. and pleasure,

  1475. then you will

  1476. hoard.

  1477. But if you are

  1478. primarily concerned

  1479. with doing

  1480. righteousness and

  1481. justice, then you

  1482. will give and not

  1483. hold back.

  1484. look and you

  1485. will learn that

  1486. you cannot

  1487. outgive God.

  1488. And you will

  1489. find life,

  1490. salvation, and

  1491. honor.

  1492. As Proverbs

  1493. 11, 24 said,

  1494. one gives

  1495. freely, yet

  1496. grows all the

  1497. richer.

  1498. Another withholds

  1499. what he should

  1500. give and only

  1501. suffers want.

  1502. Generosity, not

  1503. stinginess, is the

  1504. principle of

  1505. prosperity.

  1506. prosperity.

  1507. This paradox is

  1508. seen in verses

  1509. 22 to 23 as

  1510. well.

  1511. A wise man

  1512. scales the city

  1513. of the mighty

  1514. and brings down

  1515. the stronghold in

  1516. which they trust.

  1517. Whoever keeps

  1518. his mouth and

  1519. his tongue keeps

  1520. himself out of

  1521. trouble.

  1522. This is not

  1523. another way of

  1524. saying simply

  1525. that brain is

  1526. better than

  1527. brawn.

  1528. It's not talking

  1529. about human

  1530. intelligence or

  1531. worldly wisdom.

  1532. It's saying

  1533. something much

  1534. deeper than that,

  1535. and it's a

  1536. shocking image.

  1537. A single

  1538. wise man, a

  1539. solitary wise

  1540. man, scales the

  1541. city of the

  1542. mighty.

  1543. And after having

  1544. climbed up, he

  1545. single-handedly

  1546. brings down the

  1547. stronghold in

  1548. which they trust.

  1549. The stronghold of

  1550. the world's

  1551. mighty, fortified

  1552. with their ungodly

  1553. riches, connections,

  1554. and power, is

  1555. no match against

  1556. a single wise

  1557. man who is

  1558. backed by the

  1559. wisdom of

  1560. the almighty

  1561. God.

  1562. It is better to

  1563. be alone on

  1564. God's side than

  1565. to be with the

  1566. millions arrayed

  1567. against God.

  1568. And verse 23 is

  1569. linked to verse 22

  1570. by the military

  1571. metaphor.

  1572. The word keep is

  1573. the same word that

  1574. refers to guarding

  1575. or defending a

  1576. fortress.

  1577. And so this verse

  1578. teaches that the

  1579. security of the

  1580. wise comes from

  1581. guarding, defending

  1582. his mouth by being

  1583. judicious in his

  1584. speech and refusing

  1585. to speak evil

  1586. unlike the

  1587. blabbering fool

  1588. who gets himself

  1589. into trouble.

  1590. And this military

  1591. metaphor is

  1592. continued and

  1593. brought to a

  1594. climax in verses

  1595. 30 to 31 at the

  1596. end of this

  1597. chapter.

  1598. No wisdom, no

  1599. understanding, no

  1600. counsel can avail

  1601. against the Lord.

  1602. The horse is made

  1603. ready for the day

  1604. of battle, but the

  1605. victory belongs to

  1606. the Lord.

  1607. verses 30 to 31

  1608. form a powerful

  1609. poetic pair in

  1610. Hebrew.

  1611. The words wisdom,

  1612. understanding,

  1613. counsel, battle,

  1614. victory, they all

  1615. end with the same

  1616. vowel sound.

  1617. And word no is

  1618. repeated three times

  1619. at the beginning of

  1620. each phrase in the

  1621. verse 30.

  1622. And these poetic

  1623. devices, this

  1624. alliteration,

  1625. anaphorah, they

  1626. build toward this

  1627. halting, this

  1628. interrupting,

  1629. climactic declaration

  1630. that nothing can

  1631. avail against the

  1632. Lord, which is the

  1633. last word of verse

  1634. 30.

  1635. Words wisdom and

  1636. counsel are often

  1637. used in the context

  1638. of waging warfare.

  1639. Proverbs 20, 18

  1640. says plans are

  1641. established by

  1642. counsel.

  1643. By wise guidance

  1644. wage war.

  1645. Proverbs 24, 6

  1646. says for by wise

  1647. guidance you can

  1648. wage your war.

  1649. In abundance of

  1650. counselors there is

  1651. victory.

  1652. But this proverb

  1653. assures us that no

  1654. amount of counselors

  1655. and worldly

  1656. wisdom can prevail

  1657. against the

  1658. Lord.

  1659. There is an

  1660. insurmountable gap

  1661. between the Lord

  1662. and man.

  1663. Like a biker

  1664. that comes to a

  1665. splattering halt

  1666. as he sprints

  1667. headlong into an

  1668. immovable wall

  1669. thinking he can

  1670. crush it.

  1671. Human wisdom,

  1672. understanding,

  1673. counsel have no

  1674. chance against the

  1675. Lord.

  1676. And this is why

  1677. those who pursue

  1678. righteousness and

  1679. justice can rest

  1680. assured in their

  1681. ultimate victory,

  1682. on their ultimate

  1683. vindication.

  1684. The horse is made

1685. ready for the day of

  1686. battle but the

  1687. victory belongs to

  1688. the Lord.

  1689. As Jeremiah chapter

    Jeremiah 9 chapter mention

  1690. 9, 23-24 says,

1691. let not the wise man

  1692. boast in his

  1693. wisdom, let not

  1694. the mighty man

  1695. boast in his

  1696. might, let not

  1697. the rich man

  1698. boast in his

  1699. riches, but let

  1700. him who boasts

  1701. boast in this,

  1702. that he understands

  1703. and knows me,

  1704. that I am the

  1705. Lord who practices

  1706. steadfast love,

  1707. justice, and

  1708. righteousness in the

  1709. earth.

  1710. For in these

  1711. things I delight,

  1712. declares the

  1713. Lord.

  1714. As Emily shared

  1715. during the

  1716. prophecy, we live

  1717. in a really

  1718. broken world.

  1719. We live in a

  1720. sinful world and

  1721. we lament that,

  1722. we mourn that.

  1723. Wouldn't it be

1724. nice to live in a

  1725. world where God's

  1726. perfect justice

  1727. reigns?

  1728. Wouldn't it be

1729. nice to live in a

  1730. world where all the

  1731. wicked are punished

  1732. justly and all the

  1733. righteous thrive and

  1734. flourish?

  1735. But that's not the

  1736. world we live in.

  1737. And this points to

  1738. something that is

  1739. most important for

  1740. us to understand.

1741. Do we always like to

  1742. think of ourselves as

  1743. being on the right

  1744. side of history?

1745. Do we always like to

  1746. think of ourselves as

  1747. being righteous?

  1748. Scripture tells us,

  1749. God's infallible

  1750. word tells us,

  1751. that there is no

  1752. one righteous,

  1753. no, not one.

  1754. We think that

  1755. those wicked people

  1756. should be sacrificed

  1757. for our flourishing,

  1758. that they should be

  1759. the ransom for the

  1760. righteous.

  1761. But in reality,

  1762. we are like the

  1763. rat that Lauren

  1764. saw in her prophecy.

1765. We are the scums of

  1766. the earth,

  1767. spiritually speaking.

  1768. we are the rats,

  1769. the filth of society

  1770. that pollutes our

  1771. streets,

  1772. that should be

  1773. exterminated.

1774. We are the ones who

  1775. should be the ransom

  1776. for the righteous one,

  1777. Jesus Christ,

  1778. the Son of God.

  1779. that is what justice

  1780. looks like.

  1781. But instead,

  1782. the righteous one,

  1783. instead,

  1784. Jesus Christ,

  1785. for whom we should

  1786. have been sacrificed,

  1787. the righteous one

  1788. gives his life

1789. and dies on the cross

  1790. for our sins,

  1791. for our vindication,

  1792. for our salvation,

  1793. so that we

  1794. might live.

  1795. brothers and sisters,

  1796. that's not

  1797. justice.

  1798. That's mercy.

  1799. Jesus satisfies

  1800. God's justice

  1801. so that God

  1802. might show

  1803. mercy

  1804. to undeserving

  1805. people like us.

  1806. if you want

  1807. to live

  1808. a life

  1809. of righteousness

  1810. and justice,

  1811. the only way

  1812. is to be

  1813. gripped

  1814. by the God

  1815. whose steadfast

  1816. love,

  1817. whose faithfulness,

  1818. whose righteousness

  1819. and justice

  1820. has made way

  1821. for our salvation.

  1822. please take a moment

  1823. to reflect on that.

  1824. How is God

  1825. speaking to you

  1826. this morning

  1827. through this passage,

  1828. comforting you,

  1829. convicting you?

  1830. And after you've

  1831. reflected for a moment,

  1832. we're going to respond

  1833. corporately together

1834. by praying as a church.

  1835. Amen.

  1836. Amen.

  1837. Amen.

  1838. Amen.

  1839. Amen.

  1840. Amen.

  1841. Amen.

  1842. Amen.

  1843. Amen.
