  1. Awesome. I'm excited to be in front of you tonight because Sean has let me preach the first message from our book in Philippians.

  2. We've been going through Proverbs. That's been a joy and a help in learning about wisdom.

  3. And now we are moving into Philippians.

  4. So, my prayer is that I do well with God's Word for your encouragement and your growth.

  5. Let's pray before we get started.

  6. Lord, I pray for your help as I preach tonight.

  7. And Lord, I pray for our church as we get to hear from your Word.

  8. As we break into Philippians.

  9. Just a small passage tonight.

  10. But Lord, I pray that you would encourage us.

  11. I pray that we would see more of your glory and your goodness.

  12. Lord, I pray that you would whet the appetite of everyone so that they would come back.

  13. So that as we take this journey through Philippians, we would grow together in joy in our partnership of the gospel for your glory.

  14. God, work your Word into our life.

  15. And help us to work out our own selfishness.

  16. And all the things that we pull in.

  17. All of our sin.

  18. Lord, forgive us.

  19. And make us more Christ-like for you.

  20. We pray these things in your glorious name.

  21. Amen.

  22. Amen.

  23. Amen.

  24. There's a lot to talk about.

  25. So I'm going to try to move through it quickly.

  26. Although we're not covering a big passage.

  27. I just feel like there's a lot.

  28. So if I missed something that you wanted me to talk about, bring it up with your community group and discuss it that way.

  29. And I'll apologize in advance.

  30. But Philippians, the theme that we have chosen to put on Philippians is a joyful partnership in the gospel.

  31. And our passage this evening is just the first 11 verses of this book.

  32. And if we had to put a title on it, it would be the same thing.

  33. Joyful partnership in the gospel.

  34. So since that's the case, I would like to take, and since this is the first message of this book, I would like to take that theme.

  35. And just talk about each word real briefly because I think it's helpful for us as we spend the next two months or so looking at Philippians.

  36. Joyful partnership in the gospel.

  37. That phrase needs all of the words.

  38. And if we leave any of those words or the concepts out of the message, it leaves us lacking.

  39. It becomes less than what God intended it to be.

  40. All right, so let's start with joyful.

  41. If we take out joyful, we're left with something that doesn't satisfy.

  42. We're left with a job or a purpose that is just dry and empty.

  43. Lifeless.

  44. Not empty, but lifeless.

  45. You end up with a gospel that doesn't line up with the good news.

  46. All right?

  47. We move to partnership.

  48. If we take partnership out, we have a pretty lonely mission.

  49. A joyful gospel is great for an individual, but if there is no partnership, it falls short.

  50. See, God's building a church, a people, for his own self, for his own glory.

  51. So we need the partnership.

  52. It isn't aloneness.

  53. It isn't, if it's not together for the gospel, it becomes alone for the gospel.

  54. And there's no encouragement in that.

  55. And churches become weak and individualistic.

  56. And I think we see that in a lot of churches today, if we're not careful.

  57. The other word in that phrase is gospel.

  58. Take that out and you're left with a joyful partnership.

  59. That's nice, but there's no depth.

  60. There's no lasting foundation in that partnership.

  61. It's service.

  62. It's a relationship.

  63. And it will satisfy maybe for a time, but if you take God out of it, you're left empty in the end.

  64. I was thinking of the Christmas song, Joy to the World.

  65. There's meaning behind those words, joy to the world.

  66. The joy that came wasn't just a nice child in a manger that made Christmas season really nice and feel good,

  67. but it was lasting, eternal joy that was coming to the world for our salvation.

  68. He came for us.

  69. He knew there was nothing in this world that could satisfy us except himself.

  70. So he made a way for himself to be known and to find that satisfaction.

  71. A lasting, a real joy through Jesus Christ.

  72. So let me ask you something tonight as we begin.

  73. What words in that short theme, joyful partnership in the gospel, connect with you?

  74. What words in there connect with you?

  75. And which ones might be missing in your life?

  76. Are you missing joy?

  77. Are you missing partnership?

  78. Are you missing Jesus in the gospel?

  79. Let me encourage you.

  80. If you are, you've come to the right place.

  81. Because over the next, like I said, two months or so, as we move through Philippians as a church,

  82. I want to encourage you to stay with us.

  83. Because this theme will grow and continue.

  84. And each one of those words we're going to build upon

  85. and see the fullness of this joyful participation in the gospel.

  86. So whether you know Jesus tonight or not,

  87. what we're going to learn from Philippians can change your life.

  88. And if we've learned anything from this year,

  89. it is that we have no control over anything.

  90. We know that things can change instantly.

  91. There's nothing in this world that is going to bring us joy and satisfaction.

  92. Nothing.

  93. Nothing.

  94. Now you cannot believe me and you could waste the rest of your life trying to find those things,

  95. but in the end it will leave you empty.

  96. Or you can go after that which God has for you

  97. and you can live with a satisfaction and joy that nothing can take away.

  98. That's Philippians.

  99. That's what we get to jump into for the next little bit.

  100. Philippians is seen as the happiest book in the Bible,

  101. yet it is written by Paul while he's in prison.

  102. That's fantastic.

  103. Who better could write about joy than Paul?

  104. Possessions and obviously circumstances did not bring him joy.

  105. Only Christ brought him joy.

  106. All right, that's our intro.

  107. Let's dig into Philippians.

  108. Just a quick background of Philippians.

  109. Written by Paul around 62 AD.

  110. So we're talking about roughly 30 years after the death of Jesus Christ,

  111. after his resurrection and he goes back to heaven.

  112. Paul's in prison in Rome.

  113. And this book was written while in prison.

  114. It was written as a thank you note to the church in Philippi for their support,

  115. basically for a monetary gift that was sent to Paul while he was in prison.

  116. So Paul writes this thank you letter, but it's not just a thank you letter.

  117. It's meant to be a letter of encouragement.

  118. And we'll look into the encouragement part shortly.

  119. But it's helpful to realize that this letter is different than all of Paul's other letters.

  120. See, there's no correction or discipline in this book.

  121. It's just encouragement.

  122. So we see something special in the church of Philippi.

  123. We see something special in the relationship between Paul and the people in the church of Philippi.

  124. So be encouraged that we're digging into a book that hopefully doesn't leave you feeling like I can't do enough.

  125. There's more I need to be doing.

  126. But hear Philippians as an encouragement for who we are in Jesus Christ.

  127. As we go through these 11 verses,

  128. actually, let me just, let me read the passage first and then we'll talk about this section.

  129. So Philippians 1, verses 1 through 11.

    Philippians 1:1–11

  130. Paul and Timothy, servants of Christ Jesus,

  131. to all the saints in Christ Jesus who were at Philippi with the overseers and deacons,

  132. grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.

  133. I thank my God in all my remembrance of you,

  134. always in every prayer of mine for you all,

  135. making my prayer with joy

  136. because of your partnership in the gospel from the first day until now.

  137. And I am sure of this,

  138. that he who began a good work in you will bring it to completion at the day of Jesus Christ.

  139. It is right for me to feel this way about you because I hold you in my heart.

  140. For you are all partakers with me of grace,

  141. both in my imprisonment and in the defense and confirmation of the gospel.

  142. For God is my witness,

  143. how I yearn for you all with the affection of Christ Jesus.

  144. And it is my prayer that your love may abound more and more with knowledge and all discernment,

  145. so that you may approve what is excellent,

  146. and so be pure and blameless for the day of Christ,

  147. filled with the fruit of righteousness that comes through Jesus Christ

  148. to the glory and praise of God.

  149. As we move through these 11 verses,

  150. we're going to see three sections that we're going to work out of.

  151. The greeting, the grounding, and the goal.

  152. So let's look at how this letter starts out.

  153. Now we know that Paul has lots of reasons why he can start out with a letter like this.

  154. Paul, leader and church planter, along with Timothy,

  155. my young pastor in training,

  156. we write to you, but he doesn't do that.

  157. We know that Paul's heritage and his training,

  158. his direct calling by God,

  159. his leadership,

  160. his persecution.

  161. All these things give him this ability to boast,

  162. but instead we find Paul

  163. giving this great example of humility right from the beginning.

  164. He says,

  165. Paul and Timothy,

  166. servants of Christ Jesus.

  167. We're who's writing to you,

  168. servants of Christ Jesus.

  169. And then how does he address the people

  170. at the church of Philippi?

  171. Again, it could be,

  172. I'm writing this to the pastors and the elders.

  173. Can you preach this or pass it on to your people?

  174. No, there's this partnership

  175. of all equalness that is happening here.

  176. He says to all the saints in Christ Jesus

  177. who are at Philippi.

  178. He's not favoring out the more spiritually mature

  179. or the most gifted or those who serve the most.

  180. He addresses the saints.

  181. They are saints not because they are perfect,

  182. but because they are in Christ.

  183. That is, they have put their faith and trust in Jesus.

  184. They are the saints.

  185. And then he says with the overseers and the deacons.

  186. The word overseers is,

  187. Paul uses elsewhere

  188. and it's synonymous with elder or bishop.

  189. So by him adding these words,

  190. we're able to see that this church of Philippi

  191. that he started

  192. actually is large enough

  193. to have governance and structure to it.

  194. leadership.

  195. That's encouraging to hear.

  196. And we look at verse 2.

  197. Verse 2 is Paul's greeting

  198. to the church.

  199. He says,

  200. Grace to you and peace

  201. from God our Father

  202. and the Lord Jesus Christ.

  203. We've seen this a lot

  204. because Paul uses this greeting

  205. in all of his letters

  206. with very little variation.

  207. So it's easy for us to miss it.

  208. But this isn't just a fluffy greeting,

  209. not meant to be just a nice,

  210. Hey, how you doing?

  211. Sorry to hear your football team's

  212. not doing well this year.

  213. How's the weather?

  214. He's not starting out like that.

  215. Paul writes a greeting

  216. that is meant to encourage

  217. and give hope.

  218. And that's the greeting

  219. that Paul uses

  220. for all of his letters.

  221. Grace to you and peace

  222. from God our Father

  223. and the Lord Jesus Christ.

  224. What is he saying by that?

  225. Paul is calling down

  226. grace and peace

  227. from God

  228. and the Lord Jesus Christ

  229. to the Philippians.

  230. That is,

  231. he expects grace and peace

  232. from God

  233. to the readers

  234. of this letter.

  235. He says that

  236. this because

  237. God has shown us grace.

  238. Each and every one of us,

  239. God has shown grace.

  240. And because of that,

  241. because of who God is,

  242. we have an unshakable peace

  243. available through Jesus Christ.

  244. Paul wants us

  245. to be reminded of this

  246. so he starts out

  247. his letter this way.

  248. That is his blessing.

  249. A proclaiming of a promise.

  250. A reminder of what is available

  251. to them in God

  252. and the Lord Jesus Christ.

  253. So,

  254. that's the first section.

  255. The second section,

  256. that was the greeting.

  257. The second section

  258. we're going to look at

  259. is the grounding.

  260. What do we mean by that?

  261. Let's read verses

  262. three through five.

  263. I thank my God

  264. in all my remembrance of you,

  265. always in every prayer of mine

  266. for you all

  267. making my prayer with joy

  268. because of your partnership

  269. in the gospel

  270. from the first day

  271. until now.

  272. I say grounding

  273. because

  274. we're looking at

  275. what grounds Paul

  276. in what he is saying

  277. to the Philippians

  278. because the Philippians

  279. don't want to hear

  280. just niceties.

  281. They want to know

  282. that it's grounded

  283. in something.

  284. And I would hope

  285. we would want

  286. the same thing.

  287. Don't preach something

  288. that just sounds nice

  289. but we want it grounded

  290. in truth.

  291. We want it grounded

  292. in the word of God.

  293. When you talk about joy

  294. that's real,

  295. that we can live for,

  296. I want it to have

  297. depth and meaning

  298. that we can go after.

  299. That's the grounding

  300. that Paul wants to give us.

  301. So to phrase that section

  302. a little different,

  303. Paul says,

  304. I'm thankful to God

  305. for all of you.

  306. All of you guys

  307. that have brought me

  308. so much joy.

  309. In all of my prayers for you,

  310. I just have joy.

  311. Every time

  312. I think about you

  313. and I pray for you,

  314. I'm just filled with joy.

  315. And for that,

  316. I'm just thankful.

  317. But why?

  318. Why is Paul thankful

  319. for the church of Philippi?

  320. Why does thinking about them

  321. bring him joy?

  322. Verse 5 says,

  323. because of the partnership

  324. in the gospel

  325. from the first day

  326. until now.

  327. in Philippians,

  328. Paul uses this gospel partnership

  329. to refer to

  330. a gospel-centered friendship

  331. and the gospel mission.

  332. So,

  333. as we move through Philippians

  334. and as we see that picture

  335. of joyful partnership

  336. in the gospel,

  337. it's important that we see

  338. both aspects of that.

  339. The friendship,

  340. and we see that

  341. with this church

  342. in Philippi,

  343. and the mission.

  344. They were on a mission together.

  345. He says,

  346. partnership in the gospel

  347. from the first day

  348. until now.

  349. to get an accurate understanding

  350. of what that means

  351. from the first day

  352. until now,

  353. I think it's helpful

  354. that we see

  355. what he's talking about.

  356. Paul has this affection

  357. of this church,

  358. and he says,

  359. from the first day

  360. until now.

  361. So,

  362. I think we need

  363. a little bit of background

  364. on the church of Philippi,

  365. which Paul started.

  366. Okay?

  367. So,

  368. let's jump back

  369. just a little bit.

  370. A hundred years,

  371. Philippi is established

  372. as a Roman colony.

  373. It's governed

  374. by Roman law.

  375. Its citizens

  376. were Roman citizens.

  377. Philippi itself

  378. was modeled

  379. after Rome

  380. as a miniature Rome.

  381. Even its style

  382. and architecture

  383. was laid out

  384. to match that of Rome.

  385. And this is the city

  386. where Paul finds himself

  387. because God directs him

  388. and he starts

  389. his first church.

  390. How did he get there?

  391. Actually,

  392. he got there

  393. from a few failures.

  394. Paul's goal

  395. was to minister

  396. in Asia,

  397. in Bithynia.

  398. Only God closes

  399. those doors

  400. and he points them

  401. towards Philippi.

  402. You can read more

  403. about it

  404. in Acts chapter 16.

    Acts 16 chapter mention

  405. For the sake of time,

  406. I just want to

  407. summarize it up for you

  408. so we get an idea

  409. of what this church

  410. is,

  411. what it looks like

  412. and where it is

  413. when Paul is in prison.

  414. So,

  415. Paul

  416. and a small team,

  417. evangelistic team,

  418. on a mission,

  419. they arrive at Philippi.

  420. There's no synagogue

  421. in Philippi

  422. so Paul finds

  423. a women's prayer meeting

  424. down by the river.

  425. See,

  426. in order to have

  427. a synagogue,

  428. there must be

  429. ten or more

  430. Jewish men

  431. in a city

  432. and then a synagogue

  433. can be established.

  434. Obviously,

  435. there's not enough there

  436. so there's women

  437. praying down

  438. by the river.

  439. The kingdom of God

  440. is about to break open

  441. on European soil

  442. for the first time

  443. and it starts

  444. with women

  445. humbly praying

  446. down by the river.

  447. Prayer

  448. is powerful

  449. and it's important.

  450. So,

  451. I'm going to take

  452. a minute

  453. since we're here

  454. to talk about prayer

  455. and its importance

  456. because I think

  457. we need it

  458. right now.

  459. Are you feeling

  460. disconnected?

  461. Are you feeling

  462. like nothing's

  463. happening

  464. inside

  465. spiritually?

  466. then I want

  467. to encourage

  468. you

  469. to check

  470. your prayer

  471. life

  472. because

  473. there's life

  474. that God

  475. has for us

  476. if we keep

  477. that communication

  478. open

  479. with Him.

  480. When we close

  481. that

  482. and we seek

  483. life

  484. elsewhere

  485. then it

  486. fails us

  487. and we really

  488. see that now

  489. because of the

  490. time that we're

  491. in.

  492. God

  493. uses

  494. this

  495. little

  496. humble

  497. prayer

  498. meeting

  499. down

  500. by the

  501. river

  502. to start

  503. a church

  504. in Philippi

  505. to give us

  506. this letter

  507. to encourage

  508. us.

  509. That's

  510. what came

  511. out of

  512. the little

  513. prayer

  514. meeting.

  515. I'll admit

  516. I haven't

  517. gone to

  518. prayer

  519. meeting

  520. very much

  521. in a while

  522. but I

  523. want to

  524. encourage

  525. you

  526. to try

  527. it

  528. if you

  529. have time

  530. in your

  531. schedule

  532. to do

  533. it.

  534. It's

  535. easier

  536. now

  537. because

  538. we're

  539. quarantined

  540. because

  541. we're

  542. locked up

  543. because

  544. we can't

  545. meet

  546. together

  547. and

  548. let me

  549. while we're

  550. talking about

  551. it

  552. let me

  553. push

  554. aside

  555. any

  556. temptation

  557. of

  558. thoughts

  559. that Satan

  560. puts into

  561. your mind

  562. about how

  563. you can't

  564. come

  565. because

  566. I have

  567. to get

  568. dressed

  569. up

  570. well

  571. you don't

  572. have to

  573. get

  574. dressed

  575. up

  576. it's

  577. available

  578. online

  579. so it's

  580. easy

  581. to connect

  582. to

  583. you don't

  584. have to

  585. pray

  586. and I

  587. say that

  588. because I

  589. don't want

  590. you to

  591. stay where

  592. you don't

  593. pray

  594. but at

  595. the same

  596. time

  597. there's

  598. more you

  599. get from

  600. a prayer

  601. meeting

  602. by being

  603. there

  604. and hearing

  605. the saints

  606. praying

  607. than you

  608. do by

  609. not coming

  610. at all

  611. is it

  612. difficult

  613. yes

  614. is it

  615. hard to

  616. sing songs

  617. over

  618. zoom

  619. yeah

  620. it is

  621. but it's

  622. there

  623. and it's

  624. a church

  625. on a

  626. mission

  627. trying to

  628. stay

  629. grounded

  630. in the

  631. word of

  632. God

  633. and encourage

  634. one another

  635. so I

  636. want to

  637. encourage

  638. you

  639. to try

  640. to make

  641. it

  642. put a

  643. picture up

  644. if you

  645. don't want

  646. them to

  647. see your

  648. living room

  649. mute it

  650. if there's

  651. noise in

  652. the background

  653. if you

  654. have to

  655. run and

  656. eat

  657. dinner

  658. while

  659. you're

  660. on it

  661. that's

  662. okay

  663. what I'm

  664. saying is

  665. Satan wants

  666. to give

  667. you every

  668. opportunity

  669. not to

  670. connect to

  671. the church

  672. because he

  673. doesn't want

  674. you

  675. connected

  676. to the

  677. church

  678. prayer

  679. prayer

  680. is

  681. important

  682. and

  683. Satan

  684. knows

  685. it

  686. okay

  687. so

  688. prayer

  689. meeting

  690. down by

  691. the river

  692. Paul

  693. seeks out

  694. Lydia

  695. Lydia

  696. is a

  697. prominent

  698. woman

  699. who

  700. sells

  701. purple

  702. cloth

  703. she

  704. is a

  705. God

  706. fearer

  707. which

  708. means

  709. she

  710. worshiped

  711. God

  712. she knew

  713. about

  714. God

  715. but she

  716. doesn't

  717. know what

  718. it means

  719. to be

  720. a

  721. Christian

  722. Paul

  723. starts

  724. to teach

  725. her

  726. and it

  727. says

  728. that God

  729. opened her

  730. heart

  731. and mind

  732. to believe

  733. the gospel

  734. Lydia

  735. gets

  736. saved

  737. her house

  738. gets

  739. saved

  740. next we

  741. see Paul

  742. out of

  743. frustration

  744. he casts

  745. a spirit

  746. out of

  747. a young

  748. woman

  749. because

  750. seems like

  751. she's just

  752. annoying

  753. his

  754. preaching

  755. of the

  756. gospel

  757. so he

  758. casts

  759. out a

  760. spirit

  761. only that

  762. upsets

  763. the owners

  764. of this

  765. young

  766. lady

  767. because

  768. they

  769. were

  770. profiting

  771. off

  772. of her

  773. because

  774. she

  775. was

  776. fortune

  777. telling

  778. there's

  779. something

  780. there

  781. about

  782. fortune

  783. telling

  784. and

  785. the

  786. spirit

  787. that

  788. made

  789. that

  790. possible

  791. just

  792. throw

  793. that

  794. out

  795. there

  796. for those

  797. who

  798. struggle

  799. with that

  800. or are

  801. tempted

  802. to know

  803. about

  804. those

  805. things

  806. anyway

  807. he upsets

  808. the owners

  809. and for

  810. that reason

  811. Paul and

  812. Silas get

  813. thrown into

  814. jail

  815. not the

  816. ideal place

  817. to have

  818. church

  819. and yet

  820. Paul and

  821. Silas

  822. are

  823. singing

  824. and praying

  825. in this

  826. prison

  827. note another

  828. connection

  829. there

  830. they're

  831. having

  832. their

  833. own

  834. little

  835. prayer

  836. meeting

  837. and

  838. an

  839. earthquake

  840. breaks

  841. out

  842. jail

  843. doors

  844. are

  845. open

  846. chains

  847. fall

  848. off

  849. all

  850. the

  851. prisoners

  852. the

  853. guard

  854. is

  855. about

  856. to

  857. kill

  858. himself

  859. because

  860. he

  861. thinks

  862. they're

  863. all

  864. going

  865. to

  866. make

  867. safe

  868. and

  869. Paul

  870. says

  871. hold

  872. up

  873. let

  874. me

  875. comfort

  876. you

  877. with

  878. the

  879. fact

  880. that

  881. all

  882. of

  883. us

  884. are

  885. still

  886. here

  887. and

  888. what

  889. does

  890. the

  891. prisoner

  892. do

  893. he

  894. breaks

  895. and says

  896. what

  897. do I

  898. have

  899. to

  900. do

  901. to

  902. be

  903. saved

  904. that's

  905. how

  906. the

  907. church

  908. of

  909. Philippi

  910. started

  911. those

  912. are

  913. the

  914. first

  915. converts

  916. of

  917. this

  918. church

  919. that's

  920. roughly

  921. ten

  922. years

  923. before

  924. Philippians

  925. is

  926. written

  927. that's

  928. the

  929. history

  930. of

  931. their

  932. partnership

  933. there

  934. were

  935. others

  936. that

  937. came

  938. to

  939. Christ

  940. there's

  941. more

  942. in

  943. that

  944. and

  945. we'll

  946. learn

  947. more

  948. about

  949. that

  950. when

  951. we

  952. jump

  953. into

  954. Acts

  955. but

  956. they're

  957. on

  958. mission

  959. with

  960. him

  961. there's

  962. there

  963. is

  964. genuine

  965. love

  966. for

  967. one

  968. another

  969. this

  970. connection

  971. between

  972. this

  973. work

  974. that

  975. got

  976. started

  977. in

  978. Philippi

  979. their

  980. work

  981. for

  982. the

  983. Lord

  984. and

  985. this

  986. mission

  987. of

  988. sharing

  989. the

  990. gospel

  991. that's

  992. the

  993. partnership

  994. Paul

  995. is

  996. talking

  997. about

  998. look

  999. at

  1000. verse

  1001. 6

  1002. he

  1003. says

  1004. I

  1005. am

  1006. sure

  1007. of

  1008. this

  1009. speaking

  1010. of

  1011. God

  1012. here

  1013. he

  1014. who

  1015. began

  1016. a

  1017. good

  1018. work

  1019. in

  1020. you

  1021. will

  1022. bring

  1023. it

  1024. to

  1025. completion

  1026. at

  1027. the

  1028. day

  1029. of

  1030. Jesus

  1031. Christ

  1032. Paul's

  1033. confidence

  1034. is in

  1035. their

  1036. partnership

  1037. or

  1038. Paul's

  1039. confidence

  1040. in their

  1041. partnership

  1042. is not

  1043. an empty

  1044. confidence

  1045. it's a

  1046. confidence

  1047. in God

  1048. knowing

  1049. that God

  1050. is behind

  1051. it

  1052. and God

  1053. will

  1054. continue

  1055. it

  1056. see

  1057. what

  1058. God

  1059. starts

  1060. God

  1061. finishes

  1062. if

  1063. God

  1064. calls

  1065. a

  1066. person

  1067. and

  1068. saves

  1069. them

  1070. he

  1071. doesn't

  1072. let it

  1073. go

  1074. and drop

  1075. it

  1076. off

  1077. but

  1078. he

  1079. continues

  1080. that

  1081. work

  1082. to

  1083. completion

  1084. we

  1085. are

  1086. active

  1087. in that

  1088. relationship

  1089. with

  1090. God

  1091. it

  1092. isn't

  1093. that

  1094. we

  1095. don't

  1096. do

  1097. anything

  1098. but

  1099. it

  1100. is

  1101. God

  1102. who

  1103. supplies

  1104. what

  1105. we

  1106. need

  1107. spiritually

  1108. emotionally

  1109. physically

  1110. God

  1111. provides

  1112. and

  1113. directs

  1114. that

  1115. so

  1116. that

  1117. in the

  1118. end

  1119. we

  1120. would

  1121. be

  1122. complete

  1123. and

  1124. perfect

  1125. like

  1126. Christ

  1127. not

  1128. complete

  1129. now

  1130. but

  1131. at

  1132. the

  1133. day

  1134. of

  1135. Jesus

  1136. Christ

  1137. verse

  1138. 7

  1139. he

  1140. says

  1141. it is

  1142. right

  1143. for me

  1144. to feel

  1145. this

  1146. way

  1147. about

  1148. you

  1149. because

  1150. I

  1151. hold

  1152. you

  1153. in

  1154. my

  1155. heart

  1156. for

  1157. you

  1158. are

  1159. all

  1160. partakers

  1161. with

  1162. me

  1163. of

  1164. grace

  1165. both

  1166. in

  1167. my

  1168. imprisonment

  1169. and

  1170. in

  1171. the

  1172. defense

  1173. and

  1174. confirmation

  1175. of

  1176. the

  1177. gospel

  1178. Paul

  1179. is

  1180. grounded

  1181. in

  1182. the

  1183. fact

  1184. that

  1185. they

  1186. are

  1187. partakers

  1188. of

  1189. grace

  1190. with

  1191. him

  1192. in

  1193. his

  1194. imprisonment

  1195. in

  1196. his

  1197. sharing

  1198. of

  1199. the

  1200. gospel

  1201. and

  1202. his

  1203. defending

  1204. the

  1205. gospel

  1206. Paul

  1207. is

  1208. grounded

  1209. in

  1210. the

  1211. fact

  1212. they

  1213. are

  1214. partakers

  1215. what

  1216. does

  1217. that

  1218. mean

  1219. that

  1220. they

  1221. are

  1222. partakers

  1223. the

  1224. grace

  1225. of

  1226. God

  1227. that

  1228. is

  1229. sustaining

  1230. and

  1231. protecting

  1232. and

  1233. securing

  1234. and

  1235. holding

  1236. Paul

  1237. they

  1238. are

  1239. sharers

  1240. of

  1241. the

  1242. church

  1243. of

  1244. Philippi

  1245. is

  1246. connected

  1247. to

  1248. Paul

  1249. so

  1250. what

  1251. sustains

  1252. Paul

  1253. is

  1254. what

  1255. is

  1256. sustaining

  1257. them

  1258. that

  1259. trust

  1260. that

  1261. Paul

  1262. has

  1263. is

  1264. the

  1265. trust

  1266. that

  1267. they

  1268. hold

  1269. on

  1270. and

  1271. lean

  1272. to

  1273. the

  1274. God

  1275. that

  1276. that

  1277. is

  1278. moving

  1279. Paul

  1280. along

  1281. wherever

  1282. he

  1283. is

  1284. is

  1285. what

  1286. is

  1287. moving

  1288. the

  1289. church

  1290. along

  1291. with

  1292. him

  1293. so

  1294. instead

  1295. of

  1296. giving

  1297. up

  1298. on

  1299. Paul

  1300. when

  1301. he

  1302. is

  1303. sent

  1304. to

  1305. prison

  1306. because

  1307. as

  1308. you

  1309. can

  1310. imagine

  1311. there's

  1312. shame

  1313. that

  1314. comes

  1315. along

  1316. with

  1317. being

  1318. sent

  1319. to

  1320. prison

  1321. I

  1322. don't

  1323. quite

  1324. know

  1325. what

  1326. it

  1327. would

  1328. be

  1329. like

  1330. at

  1331. this

  1332. time

  1333. but

  1334. it

  1335. feels

  1336. like

  1337. it

  1338. would

  1339. be

  1340. that

  1341. way

  1342. now

  1343. when

  1344. someone

  1345. is

  1346. sent

  1347. to

  1348. jail

  1349. there's

  1350. shame

  1351. that

  1352. goes

  1353. along

  1354. with

  1355. that

  1356. and

  1357. so

  1358. when

  1359. the

  1360. planter

  1361. of

  1362. your

  1363. church

  1364. is

  1365. sent

  1366. to

  1367. prison

  1368. there

  1369. is

  1370. obviously

  1371. some

  1372. shame

  1373. that

  1374. can

  1375. accompany

  1376. that

  1377. that

  1378. had

  1379. no

  1380. effect

  1381. not

  1382. on

  1383. them

  1384. they

  1385. were

  1386. on

  1387. mission

  1388. with

  1389. Paul

  1390. they

  1391. knew

  1392. why

  1393. Paul

  1394. was

  1395. in

  1396. jail

  1397. and

  1398. they

  1399. supported

  1400. him

  1401. through

  1402. it

  1403. verse

  1404. 8

  1405. Paul

  1406. here

  1407. is

  1408. calling

  1409. God

  1410. as

  1411. a

  1412. witness

  1413. in

  1414. order

  1415. to

  1416. bring

  1417. emphasis

  1418. and

  1419. truth

  1420. to

  1421. what

  1422. he

  1423. is

  1424. saying

  1425. the

  1426. new

  1427. living

  1428. translation

  1429. says

  1430. this

  1431. God

  1432. knows

  1433. how

  1434. much

  1435. I

  1436. love

  1437. you

  1438. and

  1439. long

  1440. for

  1441. you

  1442. with

  1443. the

  1444. tender

  1445. compassion

  1446. of

  1447. Christ

  1448. Jesus

  1449. Paul

  1450. says

  1451. I

  1452. yearn

  1453. for

  1454. you

  1455. this

  1456. is

  1457. not

  1458. an

  1459. earthly

  1460. based

  1461. on

  1462. my

  1463. feelings

  1464. yearning

  1465. this

  1466. is

  1467. a

  1468. spiritual

  1469. yearning

  1470. one

  1471. with

  1472. an

  1473. affection

  1474. that

  1475. comes

  1476. from

  1477. Jesus

  1478. Christ

  1479. see

  1480. they

  1481. are

  1482. all

  1483. in

  1484. Christ

  1485. they

  1486. belong

  1487. to

  1488. Christ

  1489. they

  1490. have

  1491. been

  1492. found

  1493. and

  1494. saved

  1495. by

  1496. Christ

  1497. so

  1498. that

  1499. affection

  1500. is

  1501. from

  1502. Christ

  1503. Paul

  1504. is

  1505. imitating

  1506. Christ

  1507. and

  1508. how

  1509. he

  1510. has

  1511. affection

  1512. for

  1513. others

  1514. who

  1515. are

  1516. in

  1517. Christ

  1518. are

  1519. you

  1520. it's

  1521. a

  1522. little

  1523. confusing

  1524. but

  1525. are

  1526. you

  1527. seeing

  1528. the

  1529. connection

  1530. there

  1531. Paul

  1532. is

  1533. imitating

  1534. Christ

  1535. and

  1536. how

  1537. he

  1538. has

  1539. affection

  1540. for

  1541. others

  1542. who

  1543. are

  1544. in

  1545. Christ

  1546. and

  1547. Paul

  1548. has

  1549. this

  1550. affection

  1551. for

  1552. all

  1553. the

  1554. saints

  1555. in

  1556. the

  1557. church

  1558. at

  1559. Philippi

  1560. he

  1561. says

  1562. so

  1563. back

  1564. in

  1565. the

  1566. beginning

  1567. if

  1568. we

  1569. are

  1570. united

  1571. to

  1572. others

  1573. in

  1574. Christ

  1575. like

  1576. what

  1577. Paul

  1578. is

  1579. talking

  1580. about

  1581. do

  1582. we

  1583. church

  1584. have

  1585. a

  1586. similar

  1587. affection

  1588. for

  1589. them

  1590. does

  1591. our

  1592. spiritual

  1593. affections

  1594. which

  1595. come

  1596. from

  1597. Christ

  1598. imitate

  1599. his

  1600. affections

  1601. for

  1602. his

  1603. followers

  1604. you

  1605. see

  1606. the

  1607. connection

  1608. definitely

  1609. an area

  1610. that

  1611. I can

  1612. grow

  1613. in

  1614. I'm

  1615. sure

  1616. others

  1617. can

  1618. grow

  1619. in

  1620. they're

  1621. of

  1622. Christ

  1623. do

  1624. I

  1625. do

  1626. I

  1627. care

  1628. for

  1629. them

  1630. do

  1631. I

  1632. love

  1633. them

  1634. like

  1635. Christ

  1636. loved

  1637. them

  1638. so

  1639. what

  1640. is

  1641. Paul's

  1642. grounding

  1643. or

  1644. foundation

  1645. for

  1646. this

  1647. letter

  1648. of

  1649. encouragement

  1650. it's

  1651. their

  1652. willful

  1653. and

  1654. joyful

  1655. partnership

  1656. with

  1657. Paul

  1658. in

  1659. the

  1660. gospel

  1661. our

  1662. last

  1663. section

  1664. is

  1665. the

  1666. goal

  1667. verses

  1668. 9

  1669. through

  1670. 11

  1671. cover

  1672. that

  1673. what's

  1674. Paul's

  1675. goal

  1676. in

  1677. verses

  1678. 9

  1679. through

  1680. 11

  1681. or rather

  1682. we'll see

  1683. the goal

  1684. in

  1685. 9

  1686. through

  1687. 11

  1688. about

  1689. what

  1690. his

  1691. goal

  1692. is

  1693. for

  1694. this

  1695. passage

  1696. as well

  1697. as

  1698. the book

  1699. of

  1700. Philippians

  1701. Paul's

  1702. goal

  1703. let's

  1704. read

  1705. verse

  1706. 9

  1707. I

  1708. don't

  1709. want

  1710. you

  1711. to

  1712. hear

  1713. what

  1714. I

  1715. think

  1716. Paul's

  1717. goal

  1718. is

  1719. I

  1720. want

  1721. you

  1722. to

  1723. see

  1724. what

  1725. the

  1726. word

  1727. of

  1728. God

  1729. says

  1730. is

  1731. Paul's

  1732. goal

  1733. verse

  1734. 9

  1735. and it

  1736. is

  1737. my

  1738. prayer

  1739. that

  1740. your

  1741. love

  1742. may

  1743. abound

  1744. more

  1745. and

  1746. more

  1747. with

  1748. knowledge

  1749. and

  1750. all

  1751. discernment

  1752. that

  1753. was

  1754. Paul's

  1755. goal

  1756. and

  1757. it's

  1758. going

  1759. to

  1760. build

  1761. for

  1762. these

  1763. next

  1764. three

  1765. verses

  1766. that

  1767. their

  1768. love

  1769. would

  1770. abound

  1771. more

  1772. and

  1773. more

  1774. there

  1775. are

  1776. two

  1777. things

  1778. going

  1779. on

  1780. here

  1781. again

  1782. Paul

  1783. is

  1784. encouraging

  1785. them

  1786. to

  1787. increase

  1788. their

  1789. love

  1790. and

  1791. we'll

  1792. speak

  1793. to

  1794. that

  1795. in

  1796. a

  1797. minute

  1798. but

  1799. secondly

  1800. at

  1801. the

  1802. same

  1803. time

  1804. he

  1805. is

  1806. showing

  1807. them

  1808. the

  1809. importance

  1810. of

  1811. prayer

  1812. see

  1813. Paul

  1814. is

  1815. separated

  1816. from

  1817. the

  1818. church

  1819. that

  1820. he

  1821. started

  1822. he

  1823. didn't

  1824. leave

  1825. to go

  1826. on

  1827. mission

  1828. to do

  1829. other

  1830. things

  1831. but

  1832. he

  1833. is

  1834. now

  1835. in

  1836. prison

  1837. and

  1838. he

  1839. can't

  1840. leave

  1841. prison

  1842. to

  1843. go

  1844. visit

  1845. them

  1846. it's

  1847. a

  1848. church

  1849. that

  1850. he

  1851. loves

  1852. very

  1853. much

  1854. and

  1855. yet

  1856. he

  1857. can't

  1858. go

  1859. see

  1860. them

  1861. not

  1862. them

  1863. or

  1864. any

  1865. church

  1866. while

  1867. there's

  1868. no

  1869. pandemic

  1870. going

  1871. on

  1872. it

  1873. is

  1874. if

  1875. he

  1876. is

  1877. in

  1878. quarantine

  1879. unable

  1880. to

  1881. go

  1882. to

  1883. church

  1884. unable

  1885. to

  1886. sing

  1887. and

  1888. worship

  1889. and

  1890. hear

  1891. the

  1892. word

  1893. from

  1894. any

  1895. other

  1896. church

  1897. and

  1898. what

  1899. do

  1900. we

  1901. see

  1902. Paul

  1903. doing

  1904. he

  1905. prays

  1906. for

  1907. them

  1908. we

  1909. see

  1910. Paul

  1911. praying

  1912. for

  1913. them

  1914. and

  1915. encouraging

  1916. them

  1917. that's

  1918. what

  1919. he

  1920. does

  1921. so

  1922. what

  1923. do

  1924. we

  1925. do

  1926. for

  1927. others

  1928. in

  1929. our

  1930. church

  1931. do

  1932. we

  1933. pray

  1934. for

  1935. them

  1936. are

  1937. our

  1938. prayers

  1939. mostly

  1940. if

  1941. we

  1942. have

  1943. time

  1944. to

  1945. pray

  1946. consumed

  1947. with

  1948. our

  1949. needs

  1950. we

  1951. do

  1952. have

  1953. needs

  1954. I'm

  1955. not

  1956. saying

  1957. don't

  1958. pray

  1959. for

  1960. those

  1961. but

  1962. do

  1963. we

  1964. pray

  1965. for

  1966. our

  1967. church

  1968. that

  1969. we

  1970. should

  1971. be

  1972. on

  1973. mission

  1974. the

  1975. gospel

  1976. with

  1977. all

  1978. right

  1979. so

  1980. let's

  1981. go

  1982. back

  1983. to

  1984. the

  1985. first

  1986. section

  1987. we

  1988. saw

  1989. we

  1990. see

  1991. prayer

  1992. going

  1993. on

  1994. there

  1995. but

  1996. the

  1997. big

  1998. part

  1999. is

  2000. the

  2001. encouraging

  2002. the

  2003. encouragement

  2004. for

  2005. them

  2006. to

  2007. increase

  2008. their

  2009. love

  2010. he's

  2011. praying

  2012. that

  2013. their

  2014. love

  2015. would

  2016. grow

  2017. and

  2018. abound

  2019. more

  2020. and

  2021. more

  2022. but

  2023. also

  2024. realize

  2025. he's

  2026. not

  2027. just

  2028. talking

  2029. about

  2030. growing

  2031. with

  2032. no

  2033. direction

  2034. and

  2035. no

  2036. no

  2037. limits

  2038. just

  2039. aimlessly

  2040. growing

  2041. in love

  2042. we all

  2043. just

  2044. love

  2045. each

  2046. other

  2047. no

  2048. he's

  2049. specific

  2050. in

  2051. saying

  2052. with

  2053. knowledge

  2054. and

  2055. all

  2056. discernment

  2057. as

  2058. I

  2059. hear

  2060. that

  2061. knowledge

  2062. and

  2063. all

  2064. discernment

  2065. I'm

  2066. reminded

  2067. of

  2068. wisdom

  2069. and

  2070. what

  2071. we

  2072. just

  2073. went

  2074. through

  2075. in

  2076. Proverbs

  2077. he

  2078. wants

  2079. us

  2080. to

  2081. abound

  2082. in

  2083. our

  2084. love

  2085. using

  2086. wisdom

  2087. why

  2088. pray

  2089. for

  2090. love

  2091. to

  2092. abound

  2093. more

  2094. and

  2095. more

  2096. Paul

  2097. verse

  2098. 10

  2099. so

  2100. that

  2101. you

  2102. may

  2103. approve

  2104. what

  2105. is

  2106. excellent

  2107. and

  2108. so

  2109. be

  2110. pure

  2111. and

  2112. blameless

  2113. for

  2114. the

  2115. day

  2116. of

  2117. Christ

  2118. that's

  2119. why

  2120. he

  2121. prays

  2122. for

  2123. our

  2124. love

  2125. to

  2126. abound

  2127. so

  2128. that

  2129. we

  2130. may

  2131. approve

  2132. that

  2133. is

  2134. that

  2135. we

  2136. would

  2137. accept

  2138. or

  2139. agree

  2140. with

  2141. what

  2142. is

  2143. excellent

  2144. now

  2145. in

  2146. order

  2147. to

  2148. approve

  2149. what

  2150. is

  2151. excellent

  2152. we

  2153. have

  2154. to

  2155. know

  2156. what

  2157. excellence

  2158. is

  2159. so

  2160. there

  2161. needs

  2162. to be

  2163. some

  2164. knowledge

  2165. of that

  2166. not

  2167. just

  2168. knowledge

  2169. as in

  2170. facts

  2171. but

  2172. experience

  2173. see

  2174. as we

  2175. learn

  2176. to

  2177. live

  2178. like

  2179. Christ

  2180. we

  2181. learn

  2182. to

  2183. love

  2184. others

  2185. more

  2186. excellent

  2187. because

  2188. we

  2189. all

  2190. know

  2191. that

  2192. sometimes

  2193. when

  2194. we

  2195. love

  2196. others

  2197. it's

  2198. mixed

  2199. with

  2200. sin

  2201. and

  2202. sometimes

  2203. we

  2204. say

  2205. things

  2206. or

  2207. do

  2208. things

  2209. that

  2210. don't

  2211. come

  2212. out

  2213. right

  2214. they

  2215. mess

  2216. things

  2217. up

  2218. but

  2219. we

  2220. don't

  2221. turn

  2222. and

  2223. stop

  2224. loving

  2225. we

  2226. just

  2227. fix

  2228. what

  2229. we

  2230. did

  2231. we

  2232. work

  2233. it

  2234. out

  2235. we

  2236. talk

  2237. to

  2238. that

  2239. brother

  2240. that

  2241. sister

  2242. and

  2243. we

  2244. move

  2245. on

  2246. because

  2247. we're

  2248. called

  2249. to

  2250. love

  2251. them

  2252. and to

  2253. grow

  2254. in

  2255. that

  2256. and we

  2257. can't

  2258. become

  2259. more

  2260. excellent

  2261. in our

  2262. love

  2263. unless

  2264. we

  2265. keep

  2266. doing

  2267. it

  2268. and

  2269. learning

  2270. from

  2271. the

  2272. mistakes

  2273. that

  2274. we

  2275. make

  2276. and we

  2277. will

  2278. make

  2279. mistakes

  2280. stupid

  2281. and

  2282. not

2283. or to not cause offense.

2284. So that's why we want to grow in our love

2285. and so be pure and blameless for the day of Christ.

2286. It is important to remind us again,

2287. because we often get wrapped up in the world,

2288. but Christ is coming back.

2289. We need to be living in that truth,

2290. because we need to reorder our priorities at times

2291. in light of the knowledge that God is coming back

2292. for his church, for his people.

2293. Jesus gives us a parable about this that is helpful

  2294. in Matthew 25.

2295. I'm not going to read it.

  2296. It's a marriage scene.

  2297. The groom is coming,

2298. and everything is being ready.

  2299. Everything is being done.

2300. Everything is being scheduled and set up

  2301. for that big event.

  2302. The groom will arrive,

2303. and there will be a marriage and a celebration.

  2304. For that to happen,

2305. things have to be in place.

2306. Plans have to be made.

2307. Schedules have to be set up.

  2308. Priorities set, maybe readjusted.

2309. And for those who are not prepared,

  2310. they're left out.

2311. And Jesus' parable is talking about those

2312. who don't prepare and are left out

2313. and are not part of the kingdom of God

  2314. and are left behind.

2315. So we look towards the day of Christ,

2316. and we plan for that.

2317. We look forward to being made complete

  2318. and whole and perfect

2319. when we see Jesus' face.

2320. perfecting our love for others

2321. as that day draws near.

2322. That's what Paul wants to encourage us to do.

2323. But wait, Paul is not done with this goal

  2324. that he has

2325. so we can grow in our love wisely,

2326. so we can approve what is excellent,

2327. so we can move towards being pure

  2328. and blameless before Christ.

  2329. In verse 11,

2330. filled with the fruit of righteousness

2331. that comes through Jesus Christ.

2332. Paul's talking about having righteous fruit.

2333. That is, fruit of the Spirit

2334. that grows from our relationship with Jesus.

2335. Galatians chapter 5 talks about

    Galatians 5 chapter mention

2336. all the fruits of the Spirit,

  2337. love, joy, peace.

  2338. Those things don't grow

2339. outside of a relationship with Jesus.

  2340. They grow

2341. as a result of the Spirit's work inside of us.

2342. Paul doesn't want to just leave us here

  2343. thinking all these things

2344. are things we have to do

  2345. on our own power.

  2346. Living towards purity,

  2347. growing in righteousness,

  2348. our love abounding,

  2349. becoming more perfect.

2350. These things are not of us.

2351. We play an active part

  2352. in pursuing those things,

2353. but it comes through Jesus Christ.

2354. We aren't to do it on our own strength

2355. because we're going to mess it up.

  2356. We're to do it

2357. through the power of the Holy Spirit.

  2358. Lastly,

  2359. Paul brings us to

2360. the very end of verse 11,

  2361. the ultimate goal,

2362. to the glory and praise of God.

  2363. Paul ends his prayer

  2364. in thanksgiving

  2365. with this reason,

2366. that God may be glorified.

  2367. There is no purpose.

2368. There is no goal in life

  2369. higher than glorifying God.

  2370. We don't glorify God

2371. so that we can do something else

2372. or so that we can get something.

2373. That is the end goal of all things

  2374. is to glorify God.

2375. This lines up with Paul's,

2376. he has a few other similar prayers.

2377. One is in 2 Thessalonians.

  2378. He says,

  2379. To this end,

2380. we always pray for you

2381. that our God may make you

  2382. worthy of his calling

  2383. and may fulfill

  2384. every resolve for good

2385. and every work of faith

  2386. by his power

  2387. so that the name

2388. of our Lord Jesus Christ

2389. may be glorified in you

  2390. and you in him

  2391. according to the grace

  2392. of our God.

  2393. This also lines up

  2394. with what Jesus taught.

  2395. Remember how Jesus taught

  2396. his disciples to pray

  2397. in Matthew.

  2398. He says,

  2399. Our Father in heaven,

  2400. hallowed be your name.

  2401. God our Father

  2402. is to be honored

  2403. as holy

  2404. and set apart.

  2405. Also,

  2406. Jesus says this

  2407. in John 15, 8,

  2408. By this my Father

  2409. is glorified,

2410. that you bear much fruit

  2411. and so be proved

  2412. to be my disciples.

  2413. The end,

2414. the goal of it all

  2415. is to glorify God.

  2416. So in summary,

  2417. Paul is praying

  2418. that the church

  2419. would grow

  2420. in love and wisdom,

2421. that they would be pure

  2422. and blameless

  2423. and bear fruit

2424. for the glory of God.

  2425. As we spend

  2426. the next two months

  2427. or so in Philippians,

2428. I want to encourage you

  2429. to look to Christ.

  2430. Study Paul,

2431. one of the most joyful

  2432. people in the Bible

2433. and yet one of the most

  2434. persecuted.

2435. Hear what God has to say

2436. and see how he works

  2437. through Paul

2438. as we study this book.

  2439. I had this thought

  2440. while I was preparing

  2441. the message.

  2442. If we could think

  2443. of the journey,

  2444. our journey

  2445. through Philippians

  2446. as a picture

  2447. that is being painted.

  2448. A painting

  2449. of that theme,

  2450. joyful partnership

  2451. in the gospel.

  2452. what that painting

  2453. looks like

  2454. describes

  2455. what that partnership

  2456. looks like

  2457. in your life.

  2458. You see where

  2459. I'm going with this?

  2460. So there's a picture

  2461. that as we walk

  2462. through Philippians,

  2463. I want you

  2464. to allow the word

  2465. of God

  2466. to start to paint

  2467. that picture,

  2468. that description

  2469. of that partnership

  2470. in your life.

  2471. Now that's going

  2472. to look different

  2473. for different people.

  2474. For some of us,

  2475. that painting

  2476. right now

  2477. is blank.

  2478. For some of us,

  2479. that painting

  2480. might be very colorful.

  2481. For some of us,

  2482. that painting

  2483. might be dark

  2484. and lonely.

  2485. For some of us,

  2486. maybe there's

  2487. some missing parts.

  2488. Maybe it's hard

  2489. to tell what color

  2490. that used to be

  2491. in that area.

  2492. of our joyful

  2493. partnership

  2494. in the gospel.

  2495. But I want you

  2496. to be encouraged.

  2497. I don't want you

  2498. to leave the painting

  2499. there.

  2500. Because from now

  2501. until when Jesus

  2502. comes back,

  2503. that painting

  2504. of that joyful

  2505. partnership

  2506. in the gospel

  2507. can always

  2508. be progressing

  2509. and made

  2510. more beautiful.

  2511. So let's allow

  2512. God to work

  2513. through this book,

  2514. this book of Philippians

  2515. as we study it,

  2516. and let's allow him

  2517. to paint for us

  2518. what that picture

  2519. should look like

  2520. as we are

  2521. growing

  2522. in that

  2523. partnership.

  2524. Brightening

  2525. the spots

  2526. that are

  2527. hindering joy.

  2528. Putting new color

  2529. over the faded

  2530. hues of

  2531. discontentment.

  2532. Maybe filling

  2533. in the white

  2534. areas

  2535. that are

  2536. empty

  2537. with

  2538. self-centeredness

  2539. and worldliness.

  2540. I don't say

  2541. this to condemn,

  2542. I say this

  2543. because there's

  2544. hope

  2545. to be found

  2546. in Philippians,

  2547. in Christ,

  2548. as we are

  2549. in joyful

  2550. partnership

  2551. from the gospel.

  2552. the goal

  2553. when we're

  2554. done Philippians

  2555. is that we

  2556. would have

  2557. this beautiful

  2558. picture

  2559. of joyful

  2560. partnership

  2561. in the gospel

  2562. that God

  2563. has painted

  2564. for our lives.

  2565. It's for

  2566. our joy

  2567. and it's

  2568. for God's

  2569. glory.

  2570. Take a moment

  2571. just to think

  2572. about that

  2573. quietly

  2574. and then we'll

  2575. have a time

  2576. a prayer.
