  1. Okay.

  2. Please turn with me to Philippians chapter 3, verses 12 to 21.

    Philippians 3:12–21

  3. Let me seek God's help as we read and preach.

  4. God, we ask you again, we seek you,

  5. because without your power,

  6. without you speaking to us through your word,

  7. I myself can accomplish nothing.

  8. Lord, we want to,

  9. in just the same way that

  10. immigrants, foreigners, when they just arrive

  11. to this country,

  12. stand out.

  13. It's obvious they're not from here.

  14. Lord, we want to be Christians

  15. who are so heavenly-minded,

  16. who live according to our citizenship in heaven,

  17. so it is obvious to the world

  18. we're not from here.

  19. This is not our home.

  20. We belong to another kingdom.

  21. God, with your word,

  22. our charter,

  23. our constitution,

  24. our founding document,

  25. we pray that you would reorient us this evening.

  26. and fix

  27. our minds,

  28. our eyes,

  29. on Christ Jesus,

  30. our heavenly price.

  31. In Jesus' name we pray.

  32. Amen.

  33. Philippians chapter 3,

    Philippians 3:12–21

  34. verses 12 to 21.

  35. Not that I have already obtained this,

  36. or am already perfect,

  37. but I press on to make it my own,

  38. because Christ Jesus has made me his own.

  39. Brothers,

  40. I do not consider that I have made it my own,

  41. but one thing I do,

  42. forgetting what lies behind

  43. and straining forward to what lies ahead.

  44. I press on toward the goal

  45. for the prize of the upward call of God

  46. in Christ Jesus.

  47. Let those of us who are mature think this way,

  48. and if in anything you think otherwise,

  49. God will reveal that also to you.

  50. Only let us hold true to what we have attained.

  51. Brothers,

  52. join in imitating me.

  53. And keep your eyes on those

  54. who walk according to the example

  55. you have in us.

  56. For many of whom I have often told you,

  57. and now tell you even with tears,

  58. walk as enemies of the cross of Christ.

  59. Their end is destruction.

  60. Their God is their belly.

  61. And they glory in their shame

  62. with minds set on earthly things.

  63. But our citizenship is in heaven,

  64. and from it we await a Savior,

  65. the Lord Jesus Christ,

  66. who will transform our lowly body

  67. to be like his glorious body

  68. by the power that enables him

  69. even to subject all things to himself.

  70. This is God's holy and authoritative word.

  71. After winning his fourth NBA championship

  72. and his fourth finals MVP trophy last season

  73. with the Los Angeles Lakers,

  74. LeBron James,

  75. one of the greatest basketball players of all time,

  76. entered his 18th season

  77. as a 36-year-old,

  78. which makes him ancient

  79. by professional athlete standards.

  80. And what's amazing is that he is still

  81. arguably one of the best players in the NBA.

  82. His feats of athleticism are incredible,

  83. but his longevity,

  84. his endurance is what's even more impressive.

  85. And this is because of the way

  86. he completely dedicates himself to the sport.

  87. He spends $1.5 million per year

  88. in order to maintain his body

  89. and prevent injuries.

  90. He regularly uses creotherapy,

  91. meaning he intentionally subjects his body

  92. to freezing temperatures

  93. in order to relieve muscle pain,

  94. sprains, and swelling.

  95. He also uses hyperbaric oxygen therapy,

  96. where he intentionally subjects himself

  97. to high atmospheric pressures

  98. in order to oxygenate his body

  99. and reduce inflammation.

  100. And he also adheres to a...

  101. I mean, I don't know the merits

  102. of all those therapies,

  103. but he does these things.

  104. He also adheres to a strict diet,

  105. avoiding sugar and dairy altogether,

  106. and following the lowest possible carb diet.

  107. And of course,

  108. he subjects himself daily

  109. to the grueling workouts.

  110. And all of these are unpleasant,

  111. uncomfortable,

  112. even painful experiences.

  113. And yet LeBron James subjects himself to these

  114. because to him,

  115. winning an NBA championship

  116. and becoming the greatest basketball player

  117. of all time

  118. outweighs these pains,

  119. these expenses.

  120. His eyes are set on a greater prize.

  121. And that focus is the key to his perseverance.

  122. And in this passage,

  123. Paul uses the metaphor

  124. of an athletic competition,

  125. a race,

  126. one of his favorite metaphors,

  127. which he uses in at least six places

  128. to teach us that,

  129. like a runner in a race,

  130. we should press on with our minds

  131. set on the heavenly prize

  132. in Christ Jesus.

  133. So first, we're going to talk about

  134. setting our minds on our heavenly prize,

  135. verses 12 to 16.

  136. And then we'll talk about

  137. keeping our eyes on heavenly people.

  138. We'll just go to the end of the chapter,

  139. chapter 3, verse 17 to 21.

  140. So let's first talk about

  141. setting our minds on our heavenly prize,

  142. verses 12 to 16.

  143. In the preceding passage,

  144. Paul just said that he was,

  145. he has suffered the loss of all things

  146. and counted them as rubbish

  147. in order that he might gain Christ.

  148. So in order that he might know Christ

  149. and the power of his resurrection,

  150. Paul says he's forsaken all things

  151. in order to do that.

  152. Now he's qualifying that statement

  153. in verse 12.

  154. He says,

  155. Not that I have already obtained this

  156. or am already perfect,

  157. but I press on to make it my own,

  158. because Christ Jesus has made me his own.

  159. This is the already but not yet reality

  160. of the Christian salvation.

  161. On the one hand,

  162. Paul says Christ Jesus has made me his own.

  163. It's already happened.

  164. But on the other hand,

  165. he says,

  166. Paul's Christ,

  167. I have not yet obtained this.

  168. So he presses on to make it his own.

  169. Already, but not yet.

  170. If you are a Christian,

  171. then you know Christ truly,

  172. but you do not yet know him fully.

  173. We know the power of his resurrection truly,

  174. but we do not yet know it fully.

  175. So let this be an encouragement to you.

  176. If you have lamented that you do not know the Lord

  177. as you ought to,

  178. if you have wept at the slow progress

  179. of your own sanctification,

  180. if you have longed to see Christ face to face

  181. and not as in a dim reflection,

  182. then you can take heart,

  183. because you have not yet arrived.

  184. What you have in your possession now,

  185. what you experience now,

  186. is not all there is.

  187. There's so much more in store.

  188. And so we ought to press on

  189. to make it our own.

  190. But for those of us who are complacent,

  191. for those of us who are living like

  192. we have already attained the fullness of Christ,

  193. let this be a warning.

  194. You have not arrived.

  195. If you're coasting now

  196. like you're on a victory lap,

  197. you are badly mistaken.

  198. You're like the Slovenian cyclist,

  199. Luca Pibernic,

  200. who raises his arm

  201. and pumps his fist in celebration

  202. at the Tour of Italy

  203. when there's still one lap left to go.

  204. And consequently loses the race

  205. going from first place to 148th place.

  206. The race isn't over.

  207. We have not yet arrived.

  208. And Paul was motivated

  209. to press on by this great reality.

  210. He says in verse 12,

  211. Because Christ Jesus has made me his own.

  212. That's the reason why Paul presses on.

  213. He says something similar

  214. in 1 Corinthians 6, 19.

  215. You are not your own,

  216. for you were bought with a price.

  217. 1 Peter 2, 14-19 says,

  218. Do not be conformed to the passions

  219. of your former ignorance,

  220. but as he who called you is holy,

  221. you also be holy in all your conduct,

  222. knowing that you were ransomed

  223. from the futile ways

  224. inherited from your forefathers,

  225. not with perishable things,

  226. such as silver or gold,

  227. but with the precious blood of Christ.

  228. You establish ownership over something

  229. by paying for it.

  230. Christ owns us because he purchased us

  231. with his own blood.

  232. This was Paul's reason for pressing on.

  233. He's saying,

  234. I was worthless,

  235. a damaged good,

  236. an undeserving sinner,

  237. incapable of fulfilling my God-given purpose,

  238. and yet for some inexplicable reason,

  239. Christ paid the highest price

  240. to make me his own.

  241. Me, the chief of sinners.

  242. I'm his own.

  243. I'm no longer my own man.

  244. I belong to another.

  245. If Christ died to make me his own,

  246. I will live to make him my own.

  247. He is my master,

  248. and I shall do his bidding

  249. until the day I die

  250. and eternity thereafter.

  251. That's Paul's mindset.

  252. We don't strive in order

  253. to belong to Christ.

  254. No, we strive

  255. because we already belong to Christ.

  256. He has paid the highest price for us.

  257. And this is very important

  258. because if you strive

  259. in your own strength,

  260. out of your own willpower

  261. and character,

  262. you will surely fail.

  263. Paul was able to press on

  264. till the very end

  265. only because he was spurred on

  266. by what Christ did for him.

  267. Christ was his impetus

  268. and his goal.

  269. We are not our own.

  270. We are Christ's.

  271. But we have not yet fully

  272. made Christ our own.

  273. And that's our lifelong pursuit.

  274. As those who already belong to Christ,

  275. we press on toward that day

  276. when Christ will be our all in all.

  277. And so Paul says in verses 13 to 14,

  278. brothers,

  279. I do not consider

  280. that I have made it my own,

  281. but one thing I do,

  282. forgetting what lies behind

  283. and straining forward

  284. to what lies ahead,

  285. I press on toward the goal

  286. for the prize of the upward call

  287. of God in Christ Jesus.

  288. Paul lived with this singular focus

  289. in his life.

  290. He was only concerned

  291. about one thing.

  292. Paul accomplished many things

  293. during his time on earth,

  294. as we know.

  295. He was instrumentally in establishing

  296. or helping to establish

  297. more than a dozen churches.

  298. He says in Romans 15, 19,

  299. from Jerusalem

  300. and all the way around to Illyricum,

  301. I have fulfilled the ministry

  302. of the gospel of Christ.

  303. That's from modern-day Israel

  304. up north through Lebanon and Syria

  305. across Turkey

  306. and westward toward Greece

  307. all the way to Albania,

  308. where our,

  309. where Mr. Bishop,

  310. our resident missionary,

  311. is serving.

  312. That covers a distance

  313. of more than 1,500 miles

  314. in days before cars and planes.

  315. Paul wrote 13 of the 24 books

  316. in the New Testament,

  317. more than half.

  318. And he did all of this

  319. as a bivocational minister

  320. while working as a tent maker

  321. in order not to be

  322. a financial burden

  323. to those whom he ministered to.

  324. In short,

  325. Paul was a man

  326. of prodigious productivity,

  327. and yet Paul says,

  328. one thing I do.

  329. In his mind,

  330. Paul wasn't doing

  331. a hundred different things.

  332. He wasn't busy

  333. doing a lot of different things.

  334. Paul was doing one thing

  335. in a hundred different ways.

  336. He made tents

  337. so that he might

  338. preach Christ.

  339. He ate and drank

  340. so that he might

  341. preach Christ.

  342. He planted churches

  343. so that he might

  344. preach Christ.

  345. He wrote letters

  346. so that he might

  347. preach Christ.

  348. For him to live

  349. was Christ

  350. and to die

  351. was gain.

  352. And his goal

  353. was Christ

  354. and nothing else.

  355. What will people

  356. put on your epitaph?

  357. What will people

  358. say on your gravestone?

  359. When people

  360. examine your life,

  361. what will they say

  362. was your purpose,

  363. your calling?

  364. For the Christian,

  365. the answer

  366. should always be

  367. Christ.

  368. And this entails

  369. forgetting what lies behind

  370. and straining forward

  371. to what lies ahead.

  372. In a race,

  373. all that matters

  374. is what's ahead of you.

  375. It doesn't matter

  376. how far you've come

  377. or how little

  378. you've come

  379. if you don't

  380. finish the race.

  381. It doesn't matter

  382. what kind of

  383. blistering pace

  384. you have kept up.

  385. It's all for nothing

  386. if you don't

  387. finish the race.

  388. Early in chapter 3,

  389. Paul spoke of all

  390. the things that he

  391. used to put his

  392. confidence in.

  393. Circumcised on the

  394. eighth day,

  395. of the people of Israel,

  396. of the tribe of Benjamin,

  397. Hebrew of Hebrews,

  398. as to the law of Pharisee,

  399. as to zeal,

  400. a persecutor of the church,

  401. as to righteousness

  402. under the law,

  403. blameless.

  404. But, he said in verse 8,

  405. he counts all those

  406. things as trash.

  407. In order that he

  408. might gain Christ.

  409. We must forget

  410. all that we used

  411. to put our confidence in

  412. for our right standing

  413. with God.

  414. We must forget about them.

  415. Being successful,

  416. beautiful,

  417. intelligent,

  418. rich,

  419. or famous

  420. gets us places

  421. in this world,

  422. but not with God.

  423. We must put our

  424. former ways

  425. behind us.

  426. This is good news

  427. for those of us

  428. who have been

  429. struggling also.

  430. No matter what kind

  431. of sin is in your past,

  432. no matter what kind

  433. of pain,

  434. brokenness,

  435. hardness,

  436. is in your past,

  437. in your life now,

  438. you can forget it.

  439. Leave it behind

  440. and strain forward

  441. toward what is ahead

  442. because of what

  443. Christ has done.

  444. 2 Corinthians 5,

  445. 17 says,

  446. If anyone is in Christ,

  447. he is a new creation.

  448. The old has passed away.

  449. Behold,

  450. the new has come.

  451. A little earlier,

  452. a little before that

  453. in the same chapter,

  454. it says,

  455. Christ died for all

  456. that those who live

  457. might no longer

  458. live for themselves,

  459. but for him

  460. who for their sake

  461. died and was raised.

  462. Before Christ called us

  463. and purchased us,

  464. we live for ourselves.

  465. We follow the rebellious

  466. patterns of this world.

  467. We gratify the sinful

  468. desires of the flesh.

  469. But now that we belong

  470. to Christ,

  471. we must forget

  472. what lies behind

  473. and strain forward

  474. to what lies ahead.

  475. One of the most famous

  476. races in modern history

  477. was the One Mile Race

  478. at the 1954

  479. British Empire Games

  480. in Vancouver, Canada.

  481. Earlier that year,

  482. England's Roger Bannister

  483. had become the first man

  484. to run the mile

  485. under four minutes,

  486. which previously seemed

  487. to be an impossible barrier.

  488. But just 46 days later,

  489. his great rival,

  490. the Australian John Landy,

  491. beat his world record

  492. by 1.5 seconds,

  493. which is not a small amount

  494. in a mile race.

  495. And this drama

  496. created a great buildup

  497. toward the 1954

  498. British Empire Games

  499. where Roger Bannister

  500. and John Landy

  501. would compete together.

  502. The race between

  503. world's two fastest

  504. mile runners

  505. was billed by the press

  506. as the race of the century

  507. or the miracle mile.

  508. Over 100 million people

  509. tuned in by radio

  510. and millions more

  511. saw it on TV.

  512. You can actually see

  513. the whole race on YouTube.

  514. By the third

  515. of the four laps,

  516. it became a two-man race

  517. between Roger Bannister

  518. and John Landy

  519. who were far outpacing

  520. the rest of the field.

  521. John Landy

  522. had been ahead

  523. of Roger Bannister

  524. for the entirety

  525. of the race

  526. and for most

  527. of the final lap

  528. remained about

  529. eight feet or so ahead.

  530. But there's a dramatic

  531. moment in that

  532. final stretch

  533. of the final lap

  534. where Bannister

  535. starts to make his move

  536. trying to pass Landy.

  537. And at that point,

  538. the crowd is roaring

  539. and as they see

  540. that both men

  541. are on pace

  542. to break

  543. the four-minute barrier

  544. again,

  545. second time,

  546. and no longer

  547. able to hear

  548. the footfalls

  549. behind him

  550. due to the crowd,

  551. Landy looks over

  552. his left shoulder

  553. to see how close

  554. Bannister is

  555. behind him.

  556. And during that

  557. exact moment,

  558. to his great dismay,

  559. Roger Bannister

  560. passes him

  561. on his right.

  562. And there's a

  563. perfect,

  564. iconic

  565. picture

  566. of that exact

  567. moment

  568. with John Landy

  569. looking back

  570. and Roger Bannister

  571. looking straight ahead

  572. and soaring

  573. past him.

  574. It was made

  575. into a statue.

  576. And looking

  577. at the bronze

  578. sculpture

  579. of that moment,

  580. John Landy

  581. said one time,

  582. while Lot's wife

  583. was turned

  584. into a pillar

  585. of salt

  586. for looking back,

  587. I am probably

  588. the only one

  589. ever turned

  590. into bronze

  591. for looking back.

  592. At least he was

  593. a good sport.

  594. In his later

  595. recollections,

  596. Bannister said

  597. that seeing

  598. Landy glance back

  599. gave him

  600. great confidence

  601. that he could

  602. beat him

  603. because it

  604. exposes uncertainty

  605. and doubt.

  606. When you're

  607. running the race

  608. as a Christian,

  609. you're not

  610. supposed to

  611. look back.

  612. Jesus says

  613. in Luke 9,

  614. 62,

  615. no one

  616. who puts

  617. his hand

  618. to the plow

  619. and looks

  620. back

  621. is fit

  622. for the

  623. kingdom of

  624. God.

  625. If you're

  626. looking back,

  627. you cannot

  628. press on.

  629. You cannot

  630. strain forward.

  631. Twice,

  632. Paul says,

  633. I press on.

  634. I press on.

  635. Verse 12,

  636. verse 14,

  637. the word means

  638. to pursue,

  639. run after

  640. something.

  641. And in verse 13,

  642. he speaks of

  643. straining forward

  644. to what lies ahead.

  645. that word recalls

  646. how the runner

  647. lurches forward

  648. at the finish line

  649. with all his might

  650. to get ahead,

  651. cross the line

  652. before everyone else.

  653. There should be

  654. a direction

  655. in the Christian's

  656. life.

  657. Our lives should be

  658. directed heavenward.

  659. Every aspect of our lives

  660. should be stretched out

  661. toward the heavenly prize

  662. that lies before us.

  663. And Paul describes

  664. that heavenly prize

  665. in verse 14,

  666. I press on

  667. toward the goal

  668. for the prize

  669. of the upward call

  670. of God

  671. in Christ Jesus.

  672. Paul's talking

  673. about the day

  674. when his knowledge

  675. of Christ,

  676. his union with Christ

  677. will be consummated.

  678. When having shared

  679. in Christ's sufferings,

  680. he will finally

  681. get to share

  682. in Christ's

  683. resurrection glory.

  684. It's tragic

  685. that many Christians

  686. live like the rest

  687. of the world,

  688. trying to make

  689. this life last forever.

  690. We live in a culture

  691. that is perpetually

  692. trying to defy age

  693. and delay death.

  694. We pluck our white hairs,

  695. fill in our wrinkles,

  696. get facelifts.

  697. We exercise,

  698. eat organic.

  699. Some call millennials,

  700. those born between

  701. 1981 and 1996,

  702. the wellness generation,

  703. because so many of them

  704. claim that health

  705. and wellness

  706. are an important factor

  707. in their lives,

  708. one of the most important

  709. factors in their lives.

  710. And because they eat

  711. healthier and exercise

  712. more than previous generations.

  713. Of course,

  714. it's good for us

  715. to eat healthy

  716. and exercise,

  717. but our goal

  718. in those things

  719. shouldn't be

  720. to perpetuate

  721. this life.

  722. That's like

  723. wanting to stay

  724. in the race

  725. without ever

  726. finishing the race.

  727. Why would you

  728. want that?

  729. Our lives

  730. should be characterized

  731. by straining

  732. forward

  733. toward eternity.

  734. That's where

  735. our prize is.

  736. But Paul understands

  737. that not everybody

  738. has the same level

  739. of spiritual maturity.

  740. He says in verses 15 to 16,

  741. let those of us

  742. who are mature

  743. think this way,

  744. and if in anything

  745. you think otherwise,

  746. God will reveal

  747. that also to you.

  748. Only let us hold true

  749. to what we have attained.

  750. Mature Christians,

  751. Paul says,

  752. think this way.

  753. Paul repeats

  754. that verb twice

  755. in verse 15.

  756. This is the same word

  757. that Paul used

  758. earlier in Philippians

    Philippians 2:2

  759. chapter 2,

  760. verse 2,

  761. when he exhorted

  762. the Philippian believers

  763. to have the same mind,

  764. one mind.

  765. It's the same word

  766. that he used

  767. in chapter 2,

  768. verse 5,

  769. to say,

  770. have this mind

  771. among yourselves,

  772. which is yours

  773. in Christ Jesus.

  774. Namely,

  775. the mindset

  776. of Christ

  777. in which he endured

  778. humiliation

  779. and suffering

  780. in obedience

  781. to his Father

  782. and was subsequently

  783. glorified because of it.

  784. Paul uses

  785. the same word

  786. in verse 19

  787. to denounce

  788. those who have

  789. their minds

  790. set on earthly things.

  791. In short,

  792. then the mindset

  793. that Paul is

  794. commending to us

  795. is the mindset

  796. of Christ,

  797. the mindset

  798. that embraces

  799. sharing in

  800. Christ's suffering,

  801. sharing in

  802. the death of Christ,

  803. dying to ourselves

  804. daily

  805. in order

  806. to attain

  807. to the resurrection

  808. of the dead.

  809. The mind

  810. that is set

  811. on the heavenly

  812. prize,

  813. Christ Jesus,

  814. and not on

  815. earthly things.

  816. This is

  817. very important,

  818. our mindset,

  819. not what we

  820. claim to think.

  821. There are many

  822. things we claim

  823. to think,

  824. but Paul's

  825. talking about

  826. what we

  827. actually think,

  828. what we

  829. actually believe.

  830. We might say

  831. what we believe

  832. in our hearts.

  833. If you actually

  834. have this mindset,

  835. it governs,

  836. it controls

  837. the way we live.

  838. That's why

  839. Paul says

  840. in Romans 12

    Romans 12:2

  841. verse 2,

  842. do not be

  843. conformed

  844. to this world

  845. but be

  846. transformed

  847. by the

  848. renewal

  849. of your

  850. mind.

  851. Paul

  852. trusts

  853. that

  854. even

  855. for

  856. believers,

  857. however,

  858. who have

  859. not attained

  860. a mature

  861. mindset,

  862. that God

  863. will eventually

  864. reveal that

  865. also to

  866. them.

  867. Paul's

  868. faith in

  869. God here

  870. is exemplary.

  871. It's

  872. very helpful

  873. and instructive

  874. for me.

  875. If you

  876. have ever

  877. tried to

  878. disciple

  879. someone

  880. or minister

  881. to someone,

  882. you know

  883. what it

  884. feels like

  885. to be

  886. disappointed,

  887. and even

  888. exasperated

  889. by a

  890. person's

  891. dullness,

  892. slowness,

  893. or lack

  894. of progress.

  895. But Paul

  896. has an

  897. incredible

  898. capacity for

  899. patience

  900. because he

  901. really believes

  902. what he said

  903. earlier in

  904. chapter 1

  905. verse 6,

  906. that,

  907. and I am

  908. sure of

  909. this,

  910. that he

  911. who began

  912. a good work

  913. in you

  914. will bring

  915. it to

  916. completion

  917. at the

  918. day of

  919. Jesus

  920. Christ.

  921. Not only

  922. in his

  923. own life,

  924. but also

  925. with regard

  926. to the

  927. lives of

  928. other

  929. believers,

  930. Paul had

  931. the long

  932. view,

  933. a lifetime

  934. of discipleship

  935. in light

  936. of eternity.

  937. That's an

  938. encouragement,

  939. that should be

  940. an encouragement

  941. to us,

  942. brothers and

  943. sisters,

  944. you have

  945. not yet

  946. arrived,

  947. but you

  948. will

  949. arrive

  950. because Christ

  951. promises

  952. to take

  953. us there.

  954. You just

  955. need to

  956. hold on,

  957. stand

  958. firm,

  959. persevere.

  960. Brothers and

  961. sisters,

  962. I am

  963. burdened

  964. daily as

  965. I think

  966. about some

  967. people who

  968. might not

  969. persevere to

  970. the end.

  971. We need

  972. to hold

  973. on.

  974. what matters

  975. is that we

  976. hold true,

  977. Paul says,

  978. to what we

  979. have attained.

  980. Whatever the

  981. level of faith

  982. God has

  983. granted to

  984. us,

  985. we should

  986. live in

  987. proportion

  988. to that

  989. faith,

  990. following the

  991. pattern of

  992. Christ's

  993. death and

  994. resurrection,

  995. dying to

  996. selfish,

  997. sinful desires

  998. and living

  999. to Christ.

  1000. The phrase

  1001. hold true

  1002. is a

  1003. translation of

  1004. the Greek

  1005. term that

  1006. originally meant

  1007. to be drawn

  1008. up in a

  1009. line,

  1010. especially in

  1011. a military

  1012. context.

  1013. It's used

  1014. here in a

  1015. figurative

  1016. sense.

  1017. We are to

  1018. hold the

  1019. lines,

  1020. so to

  1021. speak.

  1022. However far

  1023. along we

  1024. have advanced

  1025. in our

  1026. Christian walk,

  1027. make every

  1028. aspect of

  1029. your life

  1030. down the

  1031. line conformed

  1032. to that

  1033. line.

  1034. We are

  1035. comrades in

  1036. arms.

  1037. And whenever

  1038. by God's

  1039. grace we

  1040. advance another

  1041. step in our

  1042. knowledge of

  1043. Him,

  1044. in our faith

  1045. in Him,

  1046. then we

  1047. bring every

  1048. aspect of

  1049. our lives

  1050. once again

  1051. into conformity

  1052. with that

  1053. line.

  1054. Hold

  1055. true.

  1056. Then take

  1057. another step.

  1058. Then take

  1059. another step

  1060. until that

  1061. day when

  1062. finally we

  1063. arrive in

  1064. our heavenly

  1065. kingdom.

  1066. Until that

  1067. day when

  1068. we're finally

  1069. home.

  1070. that's the

  1071. first half of

  1072. our passage,

  1073. setting our

  1074. minds on

  1075. our heavenly

  1076. prize.

  1077. In the

  1078. second half,

  1079. Paul tells

  1080. us to keep

  1081. our eyes on

  1082. heaven-minded

  1083. Christians,

  1084. keeping our

  1085. eyes on

  1086. heavenly

  1087. people.

  1088. He says

  1089. in verse

  1090. 17,

  1091. brothers,

  1092. join in

  1093. imitating

  1094. me and

  1095. keep your

  1096. eyes on

  1097. those who

  1098. walk according

  1099. to the

  1100. example you

  1101. have in

  1102. us.

  1103. many

  1104. Christians are

  1105. uneasy about

  1106. such language

  1107. of imitation.

  1108. It strikes

  1109. us as

  1110. brash and

  1111. boastful

  1112. perhaps.

  1113. Imitate

  1114. you?

  1115. Why should

  1116. I do

  1117. that?

  1118. Why should

  1119. I imitate

  1120. you?

  1121. But this

  1122. attitude

  1123. simultaneously

  1124. exposes

  1125. one, our

  1126. ignorance,

  1127. and two,

  1128. our lack

  1129. of humility

  1130. and teachability.

  1131. First, it

  1132. exposes our

  1133. ignorance of

  1134. the fact that

  1135. whether we

  1136. like it or

  1137. not, we

  1138. are already

  1139. imitating

  1140. someone.

  1141. We're social

  1142. creatures.

  1143. We are

  1144. always imitating

  1145. somebody in

  1146. one way or

  1147. another.

  1148. There's not a

  1149. single person

  1150. on earth who

  1151. is not

  1152. influenced by

  1153. other people.

  1154. If you say,

  1155. well, I'm

  1156. going to be

  1157. my own

  1158. person, I'm

  1159. going to be

  1160. different,

  1161. unique, a

  1162. non-conformist,

  1163. well, then

  1164. you're imitating

  1165. thousands of

  1166. other non-conformists

  1167. that have gone

  1168. before you.

  1169. It might be

  1170. our parents,

  1171. siblings,

  1172. colleagues,

  1173. professors,

  1174. celebrities,

  1175. politicians,

  1176. or friends,

  1177. but we are

  1178. already imitating

  1179. someone.

  1180. Second, it

  1181. exposes our

  1182. lack of

  1183. humility and

  1184. teachability.

  1185. We don't

  1186. like the

  1187. idea of

  1188. imitating

  1189. someone because

  1190. we think more

  1191. highly of

  1192. ourselves than

  1193. others.

  1194. our pride

  1195. expresses itself

  1196. in rugged

  1197. individualism

  1198. and self-sufficiency.

  1199. But imitation

  1200. is an

  1201. essential part

  1202. of discipleship

  1203. that we find

  1204. all over

  1205. Scripture.

  1206. Paul says

  1207. this no less

  1208. than seven

  1209. times throughout

  1210. his letters.

  1211. 1 Corinthians

    1 Corinthians 4 chapter mention

  1212. chapter 4,

  1213. 15 to 7,

  1214. he says,

  1215. I urge you

  1216. then,

  1217. be imitators

  1218. of me.

  1219. 1 Corinthians

  1220. 11,

  1221. 1,

  1222. be imitators

  1223. of me as

  1224. I am of

  1225. Christ.

  1226. Philippians

  1227. 4,

  1228. 9,

  1229. what you

  1230. have heard

  1231. and seen

  1232. in me,

  1233. practice

  1234. these things.

  1235. 1 Thessalonians

  1236. 1,

  1237. 6,

  1238. you became

  1239. imitators

  1240. of us

  1241. and of

  1242. the Lord.

  1243. 2 Thessalonians

  1244. 3,

  1245. 7,

  1246. and 9,

  1247. you yourselves

  1248. know how

  1249. you ought

  1250. to imitate

  1251. us.

  1252. Whenever

  1253. Paul says

  1254. imitate me,

  1255. he is

  1256. saying,

  1257. imitate me

  1258. as I

  1259. imitate

  1260. Christ.

  1261. He is

  1262. concerned

  1263. with making

  1264. Christ

  1265. followers,

  1266. not Paul

  1267. followers.

  1268. And that is

  1269. why he adds,

  1270. keep your

  1271. eyes on

  1272. those who

  1273. walk according

  1274. to the

  1275. example you

  1276. have in

  1277. us.

  1278. Paul is

  1279. just one

  1280. example among

  1281. many.

  1282. And he

  1283. wants the

  1284. Philippian

  1285. believers to

  1286. imitate those

  1287. whose lives

  1288. follow the

  1289. pattern of

  1290. Christ and

  1291. his gospel.

  1292. Like

  1293. Timothy

  1294. and Epaphroditus

  1295. that Paul

  1296. commended earlier

  1297. in chapter

  1298. 2.

  1299. This pattern

  1300. of instruction

  1301. and imitation

  1302. was modeled

  1303. by Christ

  1304. himself.

  1305. In Mark

    Mark 3:14

  1306. chapter 3

  1307. verse 14,

  1308. perhaps a

  1309. paradigmatic

  1310. verse for

  1311. discipleship,

  1312. when Jesus

  1313. chooses his

  1314. twelve

  1315. disciples,

  1316. it says that

  1317. he appointed

  1318. them so

  1319. that they

  1320. might be

  1321. with him

  1322. and he

  1323. might send

  1324. them out

  1325. to preach

  1326. and have

  1327. authority to

  1328. cast out

  1329. demons.

  1330. This verse

  1331. encapsulates

  1332. what we

  1333. might call

  1334. the three

  1335. ingredients

  1336. of discipling.

  1337. One,

  1338. presence.

  1339. Two,

  1340. preaching.

  1341. Three,

  1342. power.

  1343. Jesus

  1344. teaches them

  1345. to preach

  1346. the word,

  1347. to proclaim

  1348. the gospel,

  1349. but he

  1350. also imparts

  1351. them with

  1352. spiritual

  1353. authority,

  1354. spiritual

  1355. power.

  1356. But that's

  1357. not all.

  1358. he spends

  1359. time with

  1360. them.

  1361. They do

  1362. life together.

  1363. He offers

  1364. them his

  1365. presence

  1366. and invites

  1367. them to

  1368. watch and

  1369. imitate his

  1370. life.

  1371. To put it

  1372. another way,

  1373. discipling requires

  1374. three things,

  1375. the church,

  1376. the word,

  1377. and the

  1378. spirit.

  1379. God is

  1380. the

  1381. God.

  1382. The

  1383. church, the

  1384. gathering of

  1385. Christians,

  1386. supplies the

  1387. presence, the

  1388. body of in

  1389. the flesh

  1390. believers who

  1391. are covenanted

  1392. together and

  1393. accountable to

  1394. each other,

  1395. whose examples

  1396. we can

  1397. imitate.

  1398. The word of

  1399. God is what we

  1400. must be taught to

  1401. obey and

  1402. proclaim.

  1403. Then the

  1404. spirit of God is

  1405. the one who

  1406. imparts the

  1407. authority, the

  1408. power necessary

  1409. for us to

  1410. fulfill God's,

  1411. the commission that

  1412. God has given.

  1413. So the

  1414. church, the

  1415. word, the

  1416. spirit, the

  1417. presence, the

  1418. preaching, the

  1419. power, and I

  1420. want to challenge

  1421. all of our

  1422. members to be

  1423. involved in

  1424. discipling someone.

  1425. You can call it

  1426. beating together,

  1427. you could call it

  1428. accountability, you

  1429. can call it

  1430. discipling, whatever

  1431. you call it.

1432. You need to be in

  1433. intentional relationships

  1434. with other members

  1435. of the church in

  1436. which you are being

  1437. helped and

  1438. helping others

  1439. to follow Jesus

  1440. and become more

  1441. like him.

  1442. On the one

  1443. hand, if you

  1444. don't think there

  1445. is anyone mature

  1446. enough or

  1447. suitable enough to

  1448. disciple you,

  1449. remember that

  1450. there is no

  1451. perfect discipler

  1452. and that God

  1453. uses imperfect

  1454. human vessels

  1455. to fulfill his

  1456. perfect purpose.

  1457. The more mature

  1458. and humble you

  1459. are, the more

  1460. you will find that

  1461. you can learn

  1462. from others.

  1463. I'm regularly

  1464. challenged by

  1465. men I disciple

  1466. and I learn

  1467. from them.

  1468. On the other

  1469. hand, if you

  1470. think you're

  1471. not mature

  1472. enough to

  1473. disciple people,

  1474. remember that

  1475. any true

  1476. follower of

  1477. Christ can

  1478. disciple

  1479. because at

  1480. the very least

  1481. you know the

  1482. gospel of

  1483. Jesus Christ.

  1484. That's what it

  1485. means to be a

  1486. Christian.

  1487. So that means

  1488. you can share

  1489. the gospel with

  1490. unbelievers around

  1491. you and you can

  1492. disciple them.

  1493. And when it

  1494. comes to other

  1495. church members,

  1496. you can initiate

  1497. spiritual conversations

  1498. instead of just

  1499. talking about the

  1500. latest TV show

  1501. or the NFL

  1502. playoffs, talk

  1503. about last week's

  1504. sermon.

  1505. Ask them about

  1506. what God has been

  1507. teaching them.

  1508. Share what you

  1509. have been learning

  1510. from God.

  1511. Ask them how

  1512. they are doing

  1513. spiritually.

  1514. What has been

  1515. hard in their

  1516. lives.

  1517. Ask them how

  1518. you can pray

  1519. for them.

  1520. Our own

  1521. discipleship

  1522. following Christ

  1523. entails

  1524. discipling

  1525. others.

  1526. So if we're

  1527. not following

  1528. Christ well,

  1529. we're not doing

  1530. our own

  1531. discipleship if

  1532. we're not

  1533. discipling others.

  1534. You don't have

  1535. to be perfect

  1536. in order to

  1537. disciple others.

  1538. Paul himself

  1539. says, I have

  1540. not obtained

  1541. this.

  1542. I'm not already

  1543. perfect.

  1544. The important

  1545. part of

  1546. discipling relations

  1547. is confessing

  1548. your own sins

  1549. and weaknesses.

  1550. And showing

  1551. people that

  1552. you can lean

  1553. on Christ

  1554. through them.

  1555. So then

  1556. another helpful

  1557. practice is to

  1558. invite correction

  1559. and feedback.

  1560. Usually it

  1561. will be the

  1562. case in

  1563. these discipling

  1564. relations that

  1565. older believers

  1566. will disciple

  1567. younger believers.

  1568. That's usually

  1569. the case.

  1570. 1 Timothy 5,

  1571. 1-2 says,

  1572. Do not rebuke

  1573. an older man,

  1574. but encourage

  1575. him as you

  1576. would a father.

  1577. Younger men

  1578. as brothers,

  1579. older women

  1580. as mothers,

  1581. younger women

  1582. as sisters

  1583. in all

  1584. purity.

  1585. But scripture

  1586. also has

  1587. numerous examples

  1588. in the Old

  1589. and New

  1590. Testament of

  1591. the younger

  1592. teaching the

  1593. older.

  1594. And the

  1595. older we

  1596. get,

  1597. thankfully,

  1598. most of us

  1599. have long

  1600. ways to go.

  1601. The older

  1602. we get,

  1603. the more we

  1604. will also

  1605. have to

  1606. grow in

  1607. humility

  1608. and learn

  1609. from our

  1610. peers and

  1611. those who

  1612. are younger

  1613. than us.

  1614. Because if we

  1615. don't,

  1616. we won't have

  1617. any teachers

  1618. left.

  1619. Let's try

  1620. to make

  1621. verse 17

  1622. more common

  1623. in our church.

  1624. Brothers,

  1625. join in imitating

  1626. me and keep

  1627. your eyes on

  1628. those who walk

  1629. according to

  1630. the example

  1631. you have

  1632. in us.

  1633. We're a

  1634. small and

  1635. young church,

  1636. but there's

  1637. still plenty

  1638. of people

  1639. here who

  1640. are carrying

  1641. their cross

  1642. and following

  1643. Jesus,

  1644. whose examples

  1645. you should

  1646. aspire to.

  1647. Since we're

  1648. in the process

  1649. of evaluating

  1650. our deacon

  1651. candidates,

  1652. let me just

  1653. highlight some

  1654. of the deacon

  1655. candidates.

  1656. You will,

  1657. you probably

  1658. will not be

  1659. able to

  1660. imitate

  1661. John So's

  1662. dry sense

  1663. of humor,

  1664. but you

  1665. should

  1666. imitate the

  1667. way he

  1668. invests

  1669. intentionally

  1670. in relationships,

  1671. in people,

  1672. pours into

  1673. their lives

  1674. with the

  1675. word of

  1676. God.

  1677. You might

  1678. not be

  1679. able to

  1680. imitate

  1681. Lauren

  1682. Miller's

  1683. delicious

  1684. cooking,

  1685. but you

  1686. should

  1687. imitate

  1688. the way

  1689. she uses

  1690. her home

  1691. as a

  1692. base

  1693. to

  1694. integrate

  1695. people

  1696. into the

  1697. church,

  1698. bring them

  1699. into the

  1700. fold,

  1701. welcome

  1702. them,

  1703. to

  1704. counsel

  1705. them.

  1706. You

  1707. should

  1708. imitate

  1709. that.

  1710. you

  1711. might

  1712. never

  1713. give

  1714. birth

  1715. to

  1716. and

  1717. raise

  1718. six

  1719. children

  1720. like

  1721. Cheryl's

  1722. doing,

  1723. but you

  1724. should

  1725. imitate

  1726. the

  1727. humility,

  1728. the

  1729. gentleness,

  1730. and the

  1731. warm,

  1732. nurturing

  1733. love with

  1734. which Cheryl

  1735. has showered

  1736. many people

  1737. in her

  1738. church.

  1739. imitate

  1740. such

  1741. people.

  1742. There

  1743. are many

  1744. others in

  1745. the church

  1746. I can

  1747. point to.

  1748. Keep

  1749. your eyes

  1750. on heaven

  1751. minded

  1752. Christians.

  1753. Good

  1754. godly

  1755. examples

  1756. of others

  1757. are

  1758. especially

  1759. important

  1760. because

  1761. sometimes

  1762. well not

  1763. sometimes

  1764. all the

  1765. time

  1766. we are

  1767. bombarded

  1768. by the

  1769. world

  1770. with bad

  1771. examples.

  1772. Paul says

  1773. in verses

  1774. 18 to

  1775. 19

  1776. for many

  1777. of whom

  1778. I have

  1779. often told

  1780. you and

  1781. now tell

  1782. you even

  1783. with tears

  1784. walk as

  1785. enemies of

  1786. the cross

  1787. of Christ

  1788. their end

  1789. is destruction

  1790. their god

  1791. is their

  1792. belly

  1793. and they

  1794. glory in

  1795. their shame

  1796. with

  1797. minds set

  1798. on earthly

  1799. things.

  1800. Paul

  1801. implores the

  1802. Philippians

  1803. even with

  1804. tears

  1805. because he's

  1806. concerned for

  1807. them because

  1808. there's so

  1809. many bad

  1810. examples that

  1811. might lead

  1812. them astray

  1813. so that

  1814. people don't

  1815. make it to

  1816. the end.

  1817. Don't follow

  1818. such people.

  1819. he says

  1820. they live

  1821. as enemies

  1822. of the

  1823. cross of

  1824. Christ

  1825. because

  1826. their

  1827. lives

  1828. contradict

  1829. the

  1830. pattern

  1831. of

  1832. Christ's

  1833. death

  1834. and

  1835. resurrection

  1836. instead

  1837. of

  1838. modeling

  1839. a

  1840. cross

  1841. shaped

  1842. life

  1843. a

  1844. life

  1845. characterized

  1846. by

  1847. sharing

  1848. in the

  1849. suffering

  1850. of

  1851. Christ

  1852. dying

  1853. to

  1854. our

  1855. sinful

  1856. desires

  1857. counting

  1858. what the

  1859. world

  1860. considers

  1861. gain

  1862. as

  1863. loss

  1864. because

  1865. of

  1866. the

  1867. surpassing

  1868. worth

  1869. of

  1870. knowing

  1871. Christ

  1872. instead

  1873. of

  1874. doing

  1875. that

  1876. these

  1877. enemies

  1878. of

  1879. the

  1880. cross

  1881. of

  1882. Christ

  1883. considered

  1884. worldly

  1885. and

  1886. fleshly

  1887. things

  1888. their

  1889. gain

  1890. this is a

  1891. broad description

  1892. that fits

  1893. many people

  1894. the Judaizers

  1895. that we talked

  1896. about last

  1897. week were

  1898. such people

  1899. Paul uses

  1900. very similar

  1901. language to

  1902. describe them

  1903. in Galatians

  1904. 6

  1905. 12-15

  1906. he says

  1907. it is those

  1908. who want

  1909. to make

  1910. a good

  1911. showing

  1912. in the

  1913. flesh

  1914. who would

  1915. force

  1916. you to

  1917. be

  1918. circumcised

  1919. and only

  1920. in order

  1921. that they

  1922. may not

  1923. be

  1924. persecuted

  1925. for the

  1926. cross

  1927. of

  1928. Christ

  1929. for

  1930. even

  1931. those

  1932. who

  1933. are

  1934. circumcised

  1935. do not

  1936. themselves

  1937. keep

  1938. the

  1939. law

  1940. but

  1941. they

  1942. desire

  1943. to

  1944. have

  1945. you

  1946. circumcised

  1947. that

  1948. they

  1949. may

  1950. boast

  1951. in

  1952. your

  1953. flesh

  1954. but

  1955. far

  1956. be it

  1957. from

  1958. me

  1959. to

  1960. boast

  1961. except

  1962. in

  1963. the

  1964. cross

  1965. of

  1966. our

  1967. Lord

  1968. Jesus

  1969. Christ

  1970. by

  1971. which

  1972. the

  1973. world

  1974. has

  1975. been

  1976. crucified

  1977. to

  1978. me

  1979. and

  1980. I

  1981. to

  1982. the

  1983. world

  1984. for

  1985. neither

  1986. circumcision

  1987. counts

  1988. for

  1989. anything

  1990. nor

  1991. uncircumcision

  1992. but a

  1993. new

  1994. creation

  1995. don't

  1996. follow

  1997. those

  1998. who

  1999. would

  2000. take

  2001. your

  2002. eyes

  2003. off

  2004. of

  2005. the

  2006. cross

  2007. of

  2008. Christ

  2009. don't

  2010. follow

  2011. those

  2012. who

  2013. would

  2014. tell

  2015. you

  2016. that

  2017. there's

  2018. another

  2019. way

  2020. to

  2021. be

  2022. saved

  2023. don't

  2024. follow

  2025. those

  2026. who

  2027. would

  2028. say

  2029. that

  2030. there's

  2031. this

  2032. other

  2033. criteria

  2034. you

  2035. have

  2036. to

  2037. meet

  2038. apart

  2039. from

  2040. Christ

  2041. the

  2042. description

  2043. of these

  2044. enemies

  2045. of the

  2046. cross

  2047. of

  2048. Christ

  2049. in

  2050. verse

  2051. 19

  2052. is

  2053. intentionally

  2054. contrasted

  2055. with

  2056. verse

  2057. 20

  2058. and

  2059. 21

  2060. which

  2061. describes

  2062. Paul

  2063. and

  2064. the

  2065. Philippian

  2066. believers

  2067. they are

  2068. the

  2069. bearers

  2070. of

  2071. the

  2072. cross

  2073. of

  2074. Christ

  2075. verse

  2076. 19

  2077. says

  2078. of the

  2079. enemies

  2080. their

  2081. end

  2082. is

  2083. destruction

  2084. the

  2085. end

  2086. of the

  2087. enemies

  2088. of the

  2089. cross

  2090. stand

  2091. in

  2092. stark

  2093. contrast

  2094. to

  2190. in

  2191. Romans

  2192. 16

  2264. submit

  2265. to

  2266. the

  2330. 21

  2331. which

  2332. says

  2333. that

  2334. the

  2379. reliance

  2380. on

  2386. Christ

  2387. all

  2388. of

  2389. these

  2390. things

  2391. are
