  1. Well, it's a blessing to be here with you guys. Wonderful. It's been a while. I think the last time I spoke with you, I brought the Word of God on a Sunday was over a year ago, maybe two or three years ago even.

  2. So I'm glad I get to be here with you. It's a delight. And I bring greetings from King of Grace Church and Haverhill Mass.

  3. And we're grateful for the connection with you guys and all that God's doing here.

  4. What I want to look at this evening is the book of Malachi. It's a book written for the people of God struggling with spiritual lethargy.

  5. It teaches us that we wake up out of spiritual slumber by seeing God for who He really is.

  6. And that's really what the book is about. It's a call from God around many different topics.

  7. But a call for the people of God to return to the Lord, to wake up and to see Him for who He really is.

  8. It was given to a people who had replaced God-fueled hope and vitality with myopic cynicism and slumber.

  9. And I think it applies to us today because we, like those who are the original audience from Malachi's prophetic word,

  10. we too can trade hope and vitality for cynicism and slumber.

  11. Jason Dusing, in his book, Mere Hope, Life in the Age of Cynicism, writes the following.

  12. With instant global interconnectedness alerting us to all forms of tragedy and conflict,

  13. our society appears to have defaulted either to resigned despair or distracted indifference.

  14. When regularly our leaders disappoint us by their actions and their human flaws are flouted and magnified due to our relentless and merciless scrutiny,

  15. it's easy to see why many have come to a collective understanding that no one can stand with a message of hope.

  16. Once a small genre of fiction literature, dystopian-themed novels, games, and movies seem now to be the predominant world in which entertainment takes place,

  17. and increasingly in the real world as well.

  18. Hope, rather than dystopia, is the fiction of our day.

  19. What happened?

  20. Going to quote Mohamed Farouz, he writes,

  21. The age of anxiety has given way to an age of cynicism.

  22. Among my generation, cynicism is no longer a bad word.

  23. It's being celebrated, and it is often mistaken for intelligence.

  24. The age of cynicism, Farouz continues, is where it is better to be wry and distrustful than to be open and trusting.

  25. And Ducing says,

  26. Christians should take heed, for we, as those living in this world, are prone to bend toward it.

  27. Often the pull toward cynicism is easier to follow than the struggle to resist.

  28. Sarcasm comes too easily.

  29. Complaining is default small talk, and despair can mark us more than joy.

  30. I think he's right in his assessment.

  31. And God does not leave us alone to kind of figure this out on our own.

  32. He gives us his word.

  33. And his word has truth, and his word has power to address us in our cynicism, in our struggle with cynicism.

  34. And this book was written for people who were struggling with cynicism.

  35. If you don't know the storyline, what had gone on with the people of God at the time,

  36. they had come back from exile, and there had been wonderful promises of restoration.

  37. There were wonderful promises for the people of God going back hundreds and hundreds of years,

  38. and God had blessed them in so many ways.

  39. They had rebelled, and after really hundreds of years of gross rebellion,

  40. God finally brought what he said he would.

  41. He brought discipline.

  42. And exile on them.

  43. But then miraculously, he brought them back.

  44. He restored them as a people after military devastation.

  45. It really is just an amazing miracle, even just historically,

  46. what God did in bringing his people back and putting them back in the land.

  47. But something happened along the way, and you can read it in other books of the Bible besides Malachi,

  48. and the book of Nehemiah and Ezra.

  49. They came back with wonderful promise, wonderful anticipation of what God might do,

  50. but things didn't pan out quite how they expected.

  51. They ran into opposition.

  52. There were those opposing them around them.

  53. They were still under a foreign rule.

  54. They didn't have their own king.

  55. Another people group there, the Edomites, had stabbed them in the back in the process,

  56. then taken over much of their territory.

  57. The governors of the surrounding territories were making life hard for them.

  58. The city was broken down.

  59. The walls were not put together.

  60. They were struggling economically, and there were some bad harvests and pest infestations.

  61. And in face of all this adversity and their heartfelt disappointment, cynicism crept in and took over.

  62. And spiritual malaise became the M.O. of the day for the people of God.

  63. It polluted everything.

  64. And instead of believing in God and experiencing hope for the future and joy in the present,

  65. cynicism became the trait that marked them.

  66. And that's where we'll pick up from God's Word.

  67. I encourage you to read this whole book, maybe this week even, to read through it.

  68. But I'm going to start in chapter 3, verse 13, as God addresses the people.

  69. And this is the end of the book, and so he's in many ways bringing everything together to address them

  70. and address their hearts and call them to something besides cynicism.

  71. The title of the message is, Wake Up Cynic.

  72. And it's a message for us as well today.

  73. So let's pray before we read God's Word that we might hear and respond.

  74. Lord, we thank you for your Word.

  75. We thank you, Lord, that you don't leave us alone.

  76. You love us enough to confront us, to speak to our thoughts and our heart,

  77. and to draw us back to yourself.

  78. Thank you for your Word that's living and active, that works in our lives.

  79. And, Lord, we need to hear from you.

  80. We need the fresh repentance and faith and hope and joy that you intend for us.

  81. All of us, O Father, have been affected by cynicism, and some of us are deep in it.

  82. And we pray, Lord, lift us out and make us your holy people.

  83. Draw all to yourself this evening, we pray in Christ's name.

  84. Amen.

  85. Malachi chapter 3, verse 13.

    Malachi 3:13

  86. Your words have been hard against me, says the Lord.

  87. But you say, how have we spoken against you?

  88. You have said, it's vain to serve God.

  89. What is the profit of our keeping his charge of walking as in mourning before the Lord of hosts?

  90. And now we call the arrogant blessed.

  91. Evildoers not only prosper, but they put God to the test and they escape.

  92. Then those who feared the Lord spoke with one another.

  93. The Lord paid attention and heard them.

  94. And a book of remembrance was written before him of those who feared the Lord and esteemed his name.

  95. They shall be mine, says the Lord of hosts, in the day when I make up my treasured possession,

  96. and I will spare them as a man spares his son who serves him.

  97. Then once more you shall see the distinction between the righteous and the wicked,

  98. between one who serves God and one who does not serve him.

  99. For behold, the day is coming, burning like an oven,

  100. when all the arrogant and all evildoers will be stubble.

  101. The day that is coming shall set them ablaze, says the Lord of hosts,

  102. that it will leave them neither root nor branch.

  103. But for you who fear my name,

  104. the sun of righteousness shall rise with healing in its wings.

  105. You shall go out leaping like calves from the stall,

  106. and you shall tread down the wicked,

  107. for they shall be ashes under the soles of your feet on the day when I act,

  108. says the Lord of hosts.

  109. Remember the law of my servant Moses,

  110. the statutes and rules that I commanded him at Horeb for all Israel.

  111. Behold, I will send you Elijah the prophet before the great and awesome day of the Lord comes,

  112. and he will turn the hearts of the fathers to their children,

  113. and the hearts of the children to their fathers,

  114. lest I come and strike the land with a decree of utter destruction.

  115. God's word from Malachi 3 and 4.

  116. What I submit to you, the central message here,

  117. is a call to not grow cynical,

  118. but to realize that God has this.

  119. God's got this.

  120. Don't grow cynical.

  121. God's got this.

  122. So I want to first just look at this reality of cynicism in the text and in our lives.

  123. He tells the Israelites in the beginning,

  124. your words have been hard against me.

  125. He says it earlier actually in chapter 2 as well,

  126. that their words have wearied him.

  127. The wording here is stronger.

  128. These are not words that are just slightly off,

  129. but these are words full of grumbling.

  130. God is stepping up his rebuke

  131. and summarizing the core problem with the Israelites in Malachi's day.

  132. They've lost sight of God,

  133. and they've exchanged faith and hope and love

  134. for doubt and cynicism and compromise.

  135. And brothers and sisters, this is happening in our age as well,

  136. and it happens in our lives as well.

  137. They had lost sight of God,

  138. and they can only see themselves and their problems.

  139. Any mention of God is to blame him.

  140. Any thought of God only brings deeper bitterness.

  141. Now they're facing difficulties that are part of God's discipline on their lives

  142. because they are wandering and God's seeking to bring them back.

  143. But they're also facing difficulties that are just part of life.

  144. Life in this world until Christ returns and makes all things right

  145. has trials, has difficulties.

  146. And those difficulties come in seasons on both the wicked and the good.

  147. And as they struggle with these difficulties,

  148. whatever they might be in particular,

  149. they're turning away from God, not towards him.

  150. The Lord calls us to turn towards him.

  151. He calls us to build our houses on the rock, not on the sand.

  152. The storms and the floods come against both houses,

  153. the one on the rock and one on the sand,

  154. but the one on the rock stands,

  155. the one on the sand is washed away.

  156. And often that experience of being washed away is not so dramatic.

  157. It's often a gradual cynicism and bitterness

  158. and a loss of hope

  159. and just going through the motions

  160. that eventually leads to walking away.

  161. Think about it, right?

  162. If you know people that are older

  163. and perhaps bitter have become cynical

  164. and walked away from the faith

  165. or walked away from hope,

  166. they weren't always like that.

  167. Most people at some point in life have hope

  168. and are optimistic about the future.

  169. And it's how they deal with the difficulties in life

  170. that will shape and mold them

  171. and determine whether they end up

  172. fruitful and faithful or bitter and cynical.

  173. That's what's going on here.

  174. They've faced difficulty

  175. and instead of turning to the Lord,

  176. they're turning away,

  177. they're turning to cynicism.

  178. So listen to how they talk.

  179. It's vain to serve God.

  180. What is the profit of our keeping his charge

  181. or of walking as in mourning

  182. before the Lord of hosts?

  183. And now we call the arrogant blessed.

  184. Evildoers not only prosper,

  185. but they put God to the test

  186. and they escape.

  187. You might not say it that way.

  188. Maybe you or I would say it this way.

  189. It's a waste of time to follow God.

  190. What do you really get

  191. for all this constant repenting

  192. and attempts at holiness?

  193. Why go to church?

  194. Why give up a weekend day?

  195. Why go to small group?

  196. I'm too busy for this stuff.

  197. Why should I tithe?

  198. No one else does

  199. and they all seem perfectly fine without it.

  200. Even the worst sort of people are doing well.

  201. How can it be that God cares?

  202. And if he doesn't care,

  203. why should I?

  204. Forget it.

  205. If God doesn't keep up his end of the deal,

  206. I'm not keeping up mine.

  207. I'm done.

  208. More or less what the Israelites were saying

  209. and maybe what enters our own minds at times.

  210. The bane of the believer actually

  211. is to be walking with God

  212. or at least appearing to walk with God

  213. while you forget God.

  214. while you turn away from him.

  215. Such a person is to be pitied.

  216. There are many better ways to live

  217. than in that place of pretending

  218. and going through the motions

  219. and yet feeling like it's not worth it.

  220. But the problem in all this,

  221. the problem with the Israelites,

  222. the problem with us,

  223. is the goal of our faith is off.

  224. What's the expectation of someone

  225. with that orientation?

  226. I think often

  227. it's a sort of pragmatic

  228. self-realization program

  229. that we've signed up for

  230. thinking it's Christianity.

  231. We think if we put enough effort

  232. into believing and doing good,

  233. we'll get back something in reward.

  234. And those things are often things

  235. like success in life,

  236. a good job,

  237. friends,

  238. maybe a spouse and kids,

  239. whatever else we might think

  240. constitutes the good life.

  241. And we forget in this

  242. what it's really all about.

  243. And we set ourselves up

  244. for cynicism.

  245. Now the people of God

  246. would have been well served

  247. in the day of Malachi

  248. to turn to Psalm 73.

  249. And we as well

  250. are well served

  251. to turn to Psalm 73.

  252. For this is a psalm

  253. written by a cynic

  254. who learns the answer

  255. to the root of his cynicism.

  256. It says in Psalm 73,

  257. Truly God is good to Israel,

  258. to those who are pure in heart.

  259. But as for me,

  260. my feet had almost stumbled,

  261. my steps had nearly slipped.

  262. For I was envious of the arrogant

  263. when I saw the prosperity

  264. of the wicked.

  265. All in vain have I kept

  266. my heart clean

  267. and washed my hands in innocence.

  268. For all the day long

  269. I've been stricken

  270. and rebuked every morning.

  271. Then he goes on,

  272. When my soul was embittered,

  273. when I was bricked in heart,

  274. I was brutish and ignorant.

  275. I was like a beast toward you.

  276. Nevertheless,

  277. this is the turning point

  278. for the psalmist,

  279. Nevertheless,

  280. I am continually with you.

  281. You hold my right hand.

  282. You guide me with your counsel.

  283. And afterward,

  284. you will receive me to glory.

  285. Whom have I in heaven but you?

  286. And there is nothing on earth

  287. that I desire besides you.

  288. My flesh and my heart may fail,

  289. but God is the strength of my heart

  290. and my portion forever.

  291. You see,

  292. God has something way better

  293. than a good career,

  294. stable friends,

  295. the good life.

  296. And those things aren't bad,

  297. but God has something better

  298. and he wants us to set our heart

  299. on that thing that is better

  300. and it is the only thing

  301. that will sustain you

  302. and protect you from

  303. cynicism.

  304. He gives us

  305. himself.

  306. himself.

  307. He gives us

  308. himself.

  309. That in him

  310. we might have

  311. true life

  312. and overcome

  313. and recognize

  314. all these other things

  315. are so much lesser

  316. that I can hold my hands

  317. open to them.

  318. And if I have them,

  319. great.

  320. And if I don't,

  321. that's okay too.

  322. I've learned the secret

  323. of being content

  324. because I have him

  325. and he has me.

  326. Jesus defines

  327. eternal life this way.

  328. This is eternal life

  329. that they may know you,

  330. the only true God

  331. and Jesus Christ

  332. whom you have sent.

  333. Paul says,

  334. I've been crucified

  335. with Christ.

  336. It is no longer I

  337. who live,

  338. but Christ

  339. who lives in me

  340. and the life

  341. I now live in the flesh.

  342. I live by faith

  343. in the Son of God

  344. who loved me

  345. and gave himself

  346. for me.

  347. When we are grumbling

  348. against God

  349. and tempted

  350. towards cynicism,

  351. it's likely

  352. we've lost sight

  353. of this truth

  354. that he has given himself

  355. wholly to us,

  356. bearing our sins

  357. on the cross,

  358. living the righteous life

  359. we never could,

  360. dying on that cross

  361. for us,

  362. rising again,

  363. on the third day,

  364. victorious over sin

  365. and death

  366. so that we might

  367. have his victory

  368. in us and through us.

  369. Performing that work

  370. and then by the Spirit

  371. of God in time

  372. revealing that to us

  373. that we might have him

  374. holy

  375. and that he might have us.

  376. the cure

  377. to cynicism

  378. is to get your eyes

  379. off yourself

  380. and your circumstances

  381. and get your eyes

  382. on the Lord

  383. of mercy

  384. and glory

  385. who loves you so.

  386. I think of this

  387. actually in ways

  388. that are analogous

  389. as a pastor

  390. who does a lot

  391. of marriage counseling.

  392. What I find

  393. in marriages often

  394. is when the spouses

  395. have their eyes

  396. on what they should

  397. be getting

  398. from that other spouse.

  399. It usually leads

  400. to failure

  401. and what can happen

  402. is over years

  403. and years of doing that

  404. it's just all about

  405. how this person

  406. let me down,

  407. the other one

  408. let me down

  409. and you live

  410. in that place

  411. and the way

  412. that you break it,

  413. the way that they

  414. need to break it

  415. is to realize

  416. you know what?

  417. The glorious God

  418. has given himself

  419. for me.

  420. All my sins

  421. are forgiven.

  422. I'm free,

  423. I'm forgiven in him

  424. and now I'm called

  425. in him

  426. as he's given himself

  427. to me

  428. to give myself

  429. to my spouse.

  430. So I oint myself

  431. in this marriage

  432. not to what I can get

  433. but what I can give.

  434. Certainly there's

  435. receiving

  436. in a healthy relationship

  437. but that's not

  438. to be the primary

  439. orientation.

  440. So similarly

  441. in our walks

  442. with God

  443. when we get our eyes

  444. off of God

  445. you owe me

  446. I need this thing

  447. this is my dream

  448. you have to fulfill

  449. my dream

  450. but instead

  451. Lord

  452. you've given

  453. yourself to me

  454. holy

  455. I give myself

  456. to you holy

  457. however you want

  458. to use me

  459. when we live

  460. that way

  461. it protects us

  462. from bitterness

  463. and cynicism

  464. and you'll experience

  465. joy even in

  466. your trials.

  467. So let me ask you

  468. what is it

  469. you've felt

  470. like God owes you?

  471. What is that thing

  472. that you're holding

  473. on to?

  474. What is that

  475. disappointment?

  476. disappointment?

  477. Maybe there is

  478. something you were

  479. holding on to

  480. and it fell through

  481. and you're still

  482. holding on to it

  483. even though you

  484. don't have it

  485. and you never will.

  486. What is that thing?

  487. Let it go

  488. and give it to him

  489. he's given himself

  490. holy to you

  491. and find your life

  492. in loving him

  493. and worshiping others

  494. worshiping him

  495. and serving others

  496. find your life

  497. in him

  498. that

  499. will rescue you

  500. from cynicism.

  501. don't be cynical

  502. put your eyes

  503. on the Lord

  504. that's the message

  505. of Malachi

  506. that's the message

  507. of scripture

  508. well Malachi

  509. goes on to give

  510. other things

  511. related to this

  512. the central idea

  513. here being

  514. don't be cynical

  515. God's got this

  516. and so what he

  517. talks about next

  518. is that God's got this

  519. he's paying attention

  520. this wonderful

  521. strength

  522. that we receive

  523. in this truth

  524. it says in verse 16

  525. then those who feared

  526. the Lord

  527. spoke with one another

  528. the Lord paid attention

  529. and heard them

  530. and a book of remembrance

  531. was written before him

  532. of those who feared

  533. the Lord

  534. and esteemed his name

  535. so while there were

  536. so many that were cynical

  537. there were those

  538. who feared the Lord

  539. there were those

  540. who put their eyes

  541. on the Lord

  542. and said Lord

  543. we're looking to you

  544. in our hardship

  545. in our trials

  546. we look to you

  547. and it says

  548. those who feared

  549. the Lord

  550. spoke with one another

  551. so there were

  552. ones who regard

  553. the Lord

  554. they spoke with one another

  555. isn't that interesting

  556. they spoke with one another

  557. and it says

  558. the Lord paid attention

  559. and heard them

  560. and a book of remembrance

  561. was written before him

  562. the Lord writes

  563. a book of remembrance

  564. of his people

  565. who are fearing him

  566. and looking to him

  567. they speak with one another

  568. about their situation

  569. probably about their temptations

  570. to be cynical as well

  571. this is hard

  572. I'm disappointed

  573. my neighbors

  574. are all disappointed

  575. they've been complaining

  576. all the time

  577. this is hard

  578. but what are you doing

  579. how can we help each other

  580. they speak with one another

  581. it's likely actually

  582. where it says

  583. the Lord paid attention

  584. and heard them

  585. that actually

  586. that's a quote

  587. of what they spoke

  588. to one another

  589. because in the Hebrew

  590. the word them

  591. is not there

  592. there's no quotes

  593. in Hebrew

  594. so I think we can read it

  595. those who feared

  596. the Lord spoke with one another

  597. and said to each other

  598. the Lord's paying attention

  599. and he hears us

  600. they remind each other

  601. that God is paying attention

  602. that they are not

  603. on their own

  604. they're not lost

  605. to struggle

  606. with these things

  607. on their own

  608. but God is with them

  609. and this points to a reality

  610. that we need each other

  611. in all this

  612. we need encouragement

  613. we will always

  614. all of us

  615. will tend towards

  616. drifting away

  617. towards disappointment

  618. and towards cynicism

  619. but we need each other

  620. we need encouragement

  621. and so Hebrews 3

  622. 13 says

  623. parallel to this

  624. but encourage one another

  625. daily

  626. as long as it is called

  627. today

  628. so that none of you

  629. may be hardened

  630. by sin's deceitfulness

  631. sin will deceive us

  632. and harden us

  633. and lead us

  634. towards cynicism

  635. but we need to encourage

  636. one another

  637. and remind each other

  638. that God is for us

  639. that he's given himself

  640. for us

  641. that he knows

  642. what's going on

  643. he takes note

  644. he pays attention

  645. here it says

  646. that he has a book

  647. of remembrance

  648. in Psalm 56

  649. it says

  650. you have kept

  651. count of my tossings

  652. put my tears

  653. in your bottle

  654. are they not

  655. in your book

  656. so God himself

  657. is remembering

  658. and keeping record

  659. of your struggles

  660. of your petitions

  661. to him

  662. as you bring

  663. those things to him

  664. and say

  665. Lord help me

  666. in my disappointment

  667. help me in my loss

  668. and he brings comfort

  669. real comfort

  670. don't trade

  671. real comfort

  672. for the false comfort

  673. of cynicism

  674. but come to the Lord

  675. the God of all comfort

  676. 2 Corinthians chapter 1

    2 Corinthians 1 chapter mention

  677. it says

  678. blessed be the God

  679. and Father

  680. of our Lord Jesus Christ

  681. the Father of mercies

  682. and God of all comfort

  683. who comforts us

  684. in all our affliction

  685. so that we may be able

  686. to comfort those

  687. who are in any affliction

  688. with a comfort

  689. with which we ourselves

  690. are comforted by God

  691. for as we share abundantly

  692. in Christ's suffering

  693. so through Christ

  694. we share abundantly

  695. in comfort

  696. too

  697. God is one

  698. who's there

  699. to comfort us

  700. he knows

  701. what we're going through

  702. he's near to those

  703. who call upon him

  704. he's aware

  705. God's got this

  706. he's paying attention

  707. you're not on your own

  708. in your trials

  709. in your loneliness

  710. in your struggles

  711. you're not alone

  712. he is ever aware

  713. your tears are in a bottle

  714. as he notes

  715. what you're going through

  716. in the 1947 classic

  717. It's a Wonderful Life

  718. and probably a lot of you

  719. have seen this

  720. more than once

  721. in the story

  722. George barely reaches

  723. the point of despair

  724. and is ready

  725. to take his life

  726. because it seems

  727. that everyone

  728. would be better off

  729. if he were dead

  730. but at that point

  731. in the movie

  732. heaven intervenes

  733. and the heavenly dialogue

  734. if you don't remember

  735. goes like this

  736. hello Joseph

  737. trouble

  738. looks like we'll have

  739. to send someone down

  740. a lot of people

  741. are asking for help

  742. for a man named

  743. George Bailey

  744. George Bailey

  745. yes

  746. tonight's his crucial night

  747. you're right

  748. little does George know

  749. that heaven

  750. has been watching

  751. all along

  752. his whole life

  753. and expecting

  754. this very moment

  755. of trial for him

  756. as the angel says

  757. tonight's his crucial night

  758. now although

  759. entirely fiction

  760. this tale

  761. this popular movie

  762. is based on

  763. a solid biblical truth

  764. that God

  765. is not surprised

  766. nor uninvolved

  767. heaven does take note

  768. of your life

  769. heaven is for you

  770. he's paying attention

  771. and he's ready

  772. to be there

  773. for you

  774. God's got this

  775. so remember

  776. that he remembers

  777. remind each other

  778. of this

  779. speak with one another

  780. encourage one another

  781. daily

  782. remind each other

  783. that

  784. that

  785. he is for us

  786. I love the promise

  787. of Romans 8 32

  788. it says

  789. he who did not

  790. spare his own son

  791. but gave him up

  792. for us all

  793. how will he not

  794. also with him

  795. graciously give us

  796. all things

  797. if he's given

  798. his very son

  799. for you

  800. shedding his blood

  801. for your sins

  802. paying for your sins

  803. completely

  804. if he's already

  805. done that

  806. given them

  807. the most precious

  808. commodity

  809. ever

  810. for you

  811. how will he not

  812. take care of all

  813. this other stuff

  814. encourage each other

  815. with these truths

  816. be an agent

  817. of the encourager

  818. the Holy Spirit

  819. the Holy Spirit

  820. is the encourager

  821. and as you

  822. encourage each other

  823. he will be working

  824. in you

  825. to strengthen

  826. you in this

  827. let us fear the Lord

  828. and speak with one another

  829. let us remind each other

  830. that God's got this

  831. he's paying attention

  832. and then finally

  833. third point

  834. God's got this

  835. he will make it right

  836. as it goes into chapter 4

  837. Malachi says

  838. remember the law

  839. of my servant Moses

  840. the statutes and rules

  841. that I commanded him

  842. at Horeb

  843. for all Israel

  844. behold I will send you

  845. Elijah the prophet

  846. before the great

  847. and awesome day

  848. of the Lord comes

  849. and he will turn

  850. the hearts of fathers

  851. to their children

  852. and the hearts of children

  853. to their fathers

  854. lest I come and strike

  855. the land with the decree

  856. of utter destruction

  857. he calls his people

  858. to realize

  859. that he is making

  860. all things right

  861. he calls them

  862. to remember the law

  863. this lifestyle

  864. of faith

  865. and obedience

  866. that had been given

  867. to the people of Israel

  868. and then he speaks

  869. of a final day

  870. something he's going to do

  871. where he's going to make

  872. all things right

  873. and it's throughout

  874. the text here

  875. he says that he'll send

  876. this Elijah

  877. Elijah

  878. and we know

  879. from the New Testament

  880. that this Elijah

  881. actually is metaphorically

  882. John the Baptist

  883. and he's sent

  884. before the great

  885. and awesome day

  886. of the Lord

  887. to turn the hearts

  888. of the children

  889. to their fathers

  890. and the fathers

  891. to the children

  892. actually if we look

  893. at the parallel verse

  894. in Luke chapter 1

    Luke 1 chapter mention

  895. we understand

  896. a little bit better

  897. what's being said

  898. it says

  899. and he will turn

  900. many of the children

  901. of Israel

  902. to the Lord their God

  903. and he will go before him

  904. in the spirit

  905. and power of Elijah

  906. to turn the hearts

  907. of the fathers

  908. to the children

  909. and the disobedient

  910. to the wisdom

  911. of the just

  912. to make ready

  913. for the Lord

  914. a people prepared

  915. so this isn't literal

  916. fathers and sons

  917. and fathers and children

  918. this is basically

  919. spiritual fathers

  920. and spiritual children

  921. because it says

  922. turn the hearts

  923. of the fathers

  924. to the children

  925. and the disobedient

  926. to the wisdom

  927. of the just

  928. so young disobedient ones

  929. to the wisdom

  930. of the word of God

  931. the wisdom

  932. of those

  933. who have been faithful

  934. before them

  935. so that's what's going on

  936. in the life

  937. of John the Baptist

  938. as he prepares

  939. God's people

  940. to receive Christ

  941. as king

  942. and so it's interesting

  943. to note

  944. as you read through it

  945. Malachi is saying

  946. there will be this great day

  947. that will come

  948. and Elijah will go

  949. ahead of me

  950. and work

  951. and the people

  952. to prepare them

  953. but when did that day

  954. of Elijah happen?

  955. It happened

  956. in the days

  957. of Jesus

  958. and so we live

  959. in the days

  960. of fulfillment

  961. of the final days

  962. we live

  963. in the final days

  964. when Christ came

  965. those final days

  966. started

  967. and they'll be completed

  968. when he returns

  969. and so we live

  970. under the fulfillment

  971. of this promise

  972. of God making

  973. all things right

  974. he's already started

  975. in the ministry

  976. of Christ

  977. and most profoundly

  978. in his death

  979. and resurrection

  980. and he's continuing

  981. to work in our lives

  982. making things right

  983. and he will finish it

  984. when Christ comes back

  985. rewarding the faithful

  986. and bringing recompense

  987. to those

  988. who have refused

  989. to trust

  990. and follow him

  991. he says in Malachi 4

  992. but for you

  993. who fear my name

  994. the son of righteousness

  995. will rise

  996. with healing

  997. in its wings

  998. you shall go out

  999. leaping like calves

  1000. from the stall

  1001. and you shall tread

  1002. down the wicked

1003. for they will be ashes

  1004. under the soles

  1005. of your feet

  1006. on the day

  1007. when I act

1008. as the Lord of hosts

  1009. again the fullness

  1010. of this

  1011. comes upon his return

  1012. but it has already

  1013. happened in great measure

  1014. the son of righteousness

  1015. has risen already

  1016. his name is Jesus

  1017. and he has overcome

  1018. our sin

  1019. and overcome death

  1020. and will finalize

  1021. that victory

  1022. and in him

  1023. we have forgiveness

  1024. and we have healing

  1025. in him

  1026. he promises

1027. that this son of righteousness

  1028. shall rise

  1029. with healing

  1030. in the swings

  1031. we have healing

  1032. Isaiah 53 teaches us

  1033. he was pierced

  1034. for our transgressions

  1035. he was crushed

  1036. for our iniquities

  1037. upon him

  1038. was the chastisement

  1039. that brought us peace

  1040. and by his wounds

  1041. we are healed

1042. God's already been at work

  1043. he's at work

  1044. in our lives

  1045. he's making things right

  1046. he's rescuing us

  1047. he's healing us

  1048. he's restoring us

  1049. he's leading us

  1050. the promises

  1051. to the people

  1052. in Malachi's day

  1053. are being realized now

  1054. and we are part

  1055. of that day

  1056. and this truth

  1057. is important

  1058. because I think

  1059. it adjusts us

  1060. even more

  1061. to recognize

1062. we live in this day

  1063. that the Old Testament

  1064. people

  1065. the ones who feared

  1066. the Lord

  1067. in Malachi's day

  1068. would have longed for

1069. if only I could be

  1070. a part of what he's doing

  1071. in Cambridge

  1072. in 2021

  1073. as this work

  1074. as this promise

  1075. is being realized

  1076. that adjusts us

  1077. I think

  1078. because we recognize

  1079. we are so privileged

  1080. in this grace

1081. that we have in Christ

  1082. and privileged to be

  1083. part of the mission

  1084. of this going forward

  1085. of him making

  1086. all things right

  1087. of him winning people

  1088. from all tribes

  1089. and tongues

  1090. people and nations

1091. he is making things right

1092. and he will finalize it

1093. and he will reward those

1094. who have looked to him

  1095. and feared his name

1096. those who have turned aside

  1097. those who have let

  1098. cynicism rule them

1099. and take them to its final

  1100. the final destination

  1101. it takes them

  1102. they will receive judgment

1103. but those who have said

1104. I'm going to look to the Lord

1105. I'm going to trust in the one

1106. who's given himself fully to me

  1107. there will be blessing

  1108. and reward

  1109. he has this

1110. he's making all things right

  1111. he's working now

  1112. he's bringing redemption

  1113. he's bringing healing

1114. and we get to be a part of that

  1115. don't give up

  1116. don't lose hope

  1117. God's got this

1118. and he will make it all right

1119. and he is doing that

  1120. now

  1121. in Malachi's day

  1122. we could say that

1123. they were in the first half

  1124. of a football game

1125. we're definitely in the second half

1126. we might even be in overtime

  1127. I don't know

  1128. don't lose heart

1129. as you're called to this

  1130. football game

  1131. so to speak

  1132. now if you're

  1133. a Patriots fan

  1134. you've learned

  1135. it's not over

  1136. until it's over

  1137. four years ago

  1138. they played the Falcons

  1139. and I watched it

1140. with a lot of my friends

1141. we watched the game together

  1142. I don't know if you watched

  1143. that Super Bowl game

1144. midway through the third quarter

1145. there were a lot of cynical people

1146. it was doom and gloom

  1147. but it all changed

  1148. imagine if Tom Brady

  1149. during halftime

  1150. had grown cynical

  1151. you can imagine him

  1152. in the locker room

  1153. and I don't know

1154. what he would have been like

  1155. in the locker room

  1156. but imagine him

  1157. in the locker room

  1158. thinking

  1159. why should I continue

1160. it always goes this way

  1161. we get behind

1162. and then they expect me

1163. to do something about it

  1164. I'm sick of it

  1165. it's your fault

  1166. I'm done

1167. I'm not going to give any try

  1168. it's not

1169. it's not going to work

1170. they're so far ahead of us

  1171. just forget it

  1172. I give up

  1173. this is just

  1174. such a stupid game

  1175. anyhow

  1176. but he didn't

  1177. and they came back

  1178. we have someone

1179. much better than Tom Brady

  1180. who's our captain

  1181. and he's at work

  1182. and you might feel

  1183. in your life

  1184. that it's 28 to 3

  1185. you're down right now

1186. but the king of kings

  1187. is for you

  1188. and with you

1189. and he's going to work

  1190. in your life

  1191. and through you

  1192. to accomplish things

  1193. that are beyond

  1194. your imagination

  1195. he wants to

  1196. form you into

  1197. the image of Christ

  1198. the most wonderful thing

1199. he wants to use you

1200. to help make things right

  1201. to bring the gospel

  1202. to others

  1203. that they might

  1204. encounter him

1205. he wants to use you

  1206. together corporately

  1207. as a church

1208. to image who Jesus is

  1209. to this area

1210. to show the glories of God

  1211. he's at work

1212. we live in an amazing time

  1213. God has a lot

  1214. for you to do

  1215. get in the game

  1216. don't grow cynical

  1217. put your eyes

  1218. on the Lord

  1219. God's got this

  1220. he's paying attention

1221. he will make all things right

  1222. brother or sister

  1223. I plead with you

  1224. to examine your heart

  1225. and see where

1226. it may have grown cynical

  1227. take that

  1228. to God

1229. ask him to help you

1230. ask him to help you

  1231. look to him

1232. ask him to help you

  1233. remember

  1234. he's paying attention

1235. he's making all things right

  1236. let's pray

  1237. Lord we thank you

  1238. for your word

  1239. thank you for Malachi

1240. thank you for these truths

1241. thank you for your care

  1242. for us

  1243. Lord we need you

  1244. because we do

  1245. tend to grow cynical

  1246. and we want to

  1247. have fresh hope

  1248. and fresh strength

1249. and we want to follow you

  1250. we want to remember

  1251. we want to serve

1252. we want to be in

  1253. what you're doing

1254. this game so to speak

  1255. this wonderful

  1256. plan you have

  1257. so I pray

  1258. work in our hearts

  1259. draw us to yourself

1260. and lead us in your ways

  1261. we pray

  1262. in Christ's name

  1263. Amen

  1264. Amen
