  1. Heavenly Father, we are excited to begin our study of the book of Acts, to hear what you

  2. have to say in your word about your son Jesus Christ, about the Holy Spirit, about the church,

  3. who we are, about our mission. And Lord, we want to use this opportunity to examine ourselves,

  4. and we want to be stirred up by the examples we see in the Christian brothers and sisters who have

  5. gone before us. And we want to be more empowered, filled by your Holy Spirit in our life and ministry.

  6. So please do that, Lord. In Jesus' name we pray. Amen.

  7. Amen. That's chapter 1. I will read verses 1 to 14.

  8. In the first book, O Theophilus, I have dealt with all that Jesus began to do and teach,

  9. until the day when he was taken up, after he had given commands through the Holy Spirit to the

  10. apostles whom he had chosen. He presented himself alive to them after his suffering by many proofs,

  11. appearing to them during forty days and speaking about the kingdom of God.

  12. And while staying with them, he ordered them not to depart from Jerusalem, but to wait for the promise

  13. of the Father, which he said,

  14. You heard from me, for John baptized with water, but you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit not many days

  15. from now. So when they had come together,

  16. they asked him,

  17. Lord, will you at this time restore the kingdom to Israel?

  18. He said to them,

  19. It is not for you to know times or seasons that the Father has fixed by his own authority,

  20. but you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you,

  21. and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria and to the end of the earth.

  22. And when he had said these things as they were looking on, he was lifted up,

  23. and a cloud took him out of their sight.

  24. And while they were gazing into heaven as he went, to behold,

  25. two men stood by them in white robes and said,

  26. Men of Galilee,

  27. why do you stand looking into heaven?

  28. This Jesus who was taken up from you into heaven

  29. will come in the same way as you saw him go into heaven.

  30. Then they returned to Jerusalem from the mountain called Olivet,

  31. which is near Jerusalem, a Sabbath day journey away.

  32. And when they had entered, they went up to the upper room where they were staying,

  33. Peter and John and James and Andrew,

  34. Philip and Thomas,

  35. Bartholomew and Matthew,

  36. James the son of Alphaeus and Simon the zealot,

  37. and Judas the son of James.

  38. All these with one accord were devoting themselves to prayer,

  39. together with the woman,

  40. and Mary the mother of Jesus and his brothers.

  41. This is God's holy and authoritative word.

  42. We are in Acts chapter 1, verses 1 to 14,

    Acts 1:1–14

  43. beginning our series in the book of Acts.

  44. As I said earlier, the author is Luke, the evangelist.

  45. That's attested as early as 2nd century,

  46. and we see evidence of that throughout the book of Acts

  47. because he includes himself in the narrative by using the pronoun we.

  48. And we know that Luke was a companion of Paul's

  49. from Philemon 24, 2 Timothy 4.11, and other places.

  50. And since the last recorded event in the book of Acts took place around 62 A.D.,

  51. and since the book never mentions several key events in church history

  52. and in the history of Israel from 65 to 70 A.D.,

  53. it seems examples of that would be in the Neronian persecution,

  54. death of Paul and Peter,

  55. significant events, destruction of Jerusalem.

  56. It seems likely that Acts was finished before that,

  57. so the date of composition is somewhere between 62 and 65 A.D.

  58. And in verse 1, Luke says,

  59. In the first book of Theophilus,

  60. I have dealt with all that Jesus began to do and teach.

  61. So from this, we know that Acts is the second of a two-volume series.

  62. And the first volume is the Gospel of Luke,

  63. which was also dedicated to this person named Theophilus,

  64. who was likely a patron that funded the copying and distribution of Luke's work.

  65. And in Luke 1, verse 3,

    Luke 1:3

  66. he has said that having followed all things closely for some time past,

  67. that he has written an orderly account of what Jesus did and taught.

  68. That was what Luke said about his Gospel.

  69. So the genre of the book of Acts, likewise, is history, just like Luke.

  70. And more specifically, it's biblical history,

  71. since it emulates the style and theological themes of Old Testament history.

  72. And I noted in our sermon series through Luke

  73. that Luke is a first-rate historian

  74. whose attention to detail is noted by many modern historians and archaeologists.

  75. And perhaps this is not surprising,

  76. considering that he was a doctor.

  77. He's called the beloved physician in Colossians 4, verse 14.

    Colossians 4:14

  78. And now in this sequel,

  79. with the same orderliness and meticulousness we expect of him,

  80. he tells us about what Jesus continues to do through his apostles.

  81. But it's important to note that this wasn't just Dr. Luke's hobby

  82. or a mere academic exercise because he likes history.

  83. He likes to keep a record of things that happened.

  84. There's a reason why the church tradition calls him Luke the Evangelist.

  85. Luke sought to preserve this history

  86. so that you might believe in Jesus Christ and be saved.

  87. We saw this purpose clearly at the beginning of his Gospel

  88. in Luke chapter 1, verse 4.

    Luke 1:4

  89. He said,

  90. That you may have certainty concerning the things you have been taught.

  91. That's the purpose of the Gospel of Luke and the book of Acts, its sequel.

  92. Especially because the early church was persecuted,

  93. so intensely persecuted,

  94. and in many cases by the Jews themselves,

  95. there were many opportunities for doubt to creep in.

  96. So Luke wrote the Gospel of Luke and the book of Acts

  97. to reassure people that Jesus really is who he said he was.

  98. That he really died on the cross and was raised on the third day.

  99. That he really ascended to the heavens.

  100. That he really sent the Spirit of God down.

  101. That these events really were the work of God.

  102. And it was the fulfillment of God's promises from of old.

  103. And that the church really is the true people of God.

  104. And that the apostles are the ones who are continuing the things that Jesus did and taught.

  105. My prayer is that as we go through this,

  106. that you be reassured of these things also.

  107. So the intended structure of the book of Acts is made apparent by the summary statements

  108. at the end of each section,

  109. where Luke mentions one way or another that the Word of God continued to increase,

  110. or that the church multiplied and was built up.

  111. These are examples of all the summary statements.

  112. Acts 2, 6, 9, 12, 16, 19, and 28.

  113. And if you use those as kind of as guiding markers to form an outline,

  114. it looks like this.

  115. The church of Christ established and empowered in chapter 1 to chapter 2, verse 41.

  116. And then the church in Jerusalem, chapter 2 to 6.

  117. The church in Judea and Samaria, chapter 6 to 9.

  118. Peter and the first Gentile convert.

  119. And Paul turning to the Gentiles.

  120. And then to the end of the earth.

  121. And finally to Jerusalem and to Rome in 1921 to 2831.

  122. In this particular passage, Luke teaches us that as followers of Jesus,

  123. we are to bear witness to Jesus Christ to the end of the earth

  124. by the power of the Holy Spirit.

  125. That's the main point of our passage this evening.

  126. And I'm going to talk about that in three parts.

  127. First, the power for Christian mission, chapter 1, verses 1 to 5.

  128. Then the purview of Christian mission, verses 6 to 11.

  129. And finally, prayer and Christian mission, verses 12 to 14.

  130. In Luke chapter 24, verse 19, after Jesus' resurrection,

    Luke 24:19

  131. we see two of Jesus' disciples on the road to Emmaus

  132. speaking about how Jesus was a prophet mighty in deed and word

  133. before God and all the people.

  134. And echoing that language, Luke says here in chapter 1, verses 1 to 2 of Acts,

  135. In the first book of Theophilus,

  136. I have dealt with all that Jesus began to do and teach

  137. until the day when he was taken up,

  138. after he had given command through the Holy Spirit

  139. to the apostles whom he had chosen.

  140. But what exactly did Jesus say and do?

  141. What exactly did Jesus command his apostles?

  142. Verses 3 to 5 give us more detail.

  143. It says,

  144. He presented himself alive to them after his suffering by many proofs,

  145. appearing to them during 40 days and speaking about the kingdom of God.

  146. And while staying with them,

  147. he ordered them not to depart from Jerusalem,

  148. but to wait for the promise of the Father,

  149. which he said,

  150. You heard from me.

  151. For John baptized with water,

  152. but you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit not many days from now.

  153. This verse closely parallels what Luke said at the end of his gospel

  154. in chapter 24, verses 46 to 49,

  155. which also contains these three elements of what Jesus did and said.

  156. First is Christ's suffering,

  157. which includes his death,

  158. his death on the cross.

  159. Second is Christ's resurrection.

  160. Third is Christ's message about the kingdom of God.

  161. In Luke 24, 46, 47,

  162. he unpacks it and says,

  163. Thus it is written that the Christ should suffer,

  164. and on the third day rise from the dead,

  165. and that repentance for the forgiveness of sins

  166. should be proclaimed in his name to all nations,

  167. beginning from Jerusalem.

  168. So once again,

  169. Christ's suffering,

  170. Christ's resurrection,

  171. and Christ's proclamation of the kingdom of God,

  172. which entails coming under the gracious reign of Christ

  173. by receiving forgiveness of sins

  174. through repentance and faith.

  175. This is what Christ did and said.

  176. He first suffered,

  177. died on the cross for our sins.

  178. He tasted death for our sake

  179. so that we might have eternal life

  180. by putting our trust in him.

  181. Second, he was raised.

  182. The fact that he was raised

  183. is proof that his death,

  184. his atoning sacrifice,

  185. was accepted by the Father.

  186. And the third,

  187. it is Christ's death and resurrection

  188. that makes possible our repentance

  189. for the forgiveness of sins.

  190. And true repentance is not merely a mental ascent,

  191. but it's a turning,

  192. a reorienting of one's entire life.

  193. When you renounce your autonomy

  194. and submit to the lordship of Christ,

  195. when you renounce your sinful ways

  196. and submit to the ways of God,

  197. that is true repentance

  198. that leads to forgiveness of sins.

  199. And only those who have received forgiveness of sins

  200. in this way

  201. are reconciled to God

  202. as citizens of the kingdom of God.

  203. They're no longer under the dominion of Satan,

  204. but under the gracious reign of Jesus Christ, the king.

  205. That's why the proclamation,

  206. the message of the kingdom,

  207. the good news of the kingdom,

  208. and the good news of Christ's death

  209. and resurrection

  210. are intimately related.

  211. Jesus did and taught these things.

  212. And the apostles continued to do

  213. and teach these things.

  214. And now we are to do and teach these things.

  215. We are called to suffer as Christ suffered.

  216. The Greek word that's translated as witnesses in verse 8

  217. is the word from which we get the English word martyr.

  218. Not all Christian witness involves martyrdom,

  219. but all Christian witness involves suffering.

  220. At the time of Paul's conversion in Acts 9, 15-16,

  221. Jesus says concerning him,

  222. He is a chosen instrument of mine

  223. to carry my name before the Gentiles and kings

  224. and the children of Israel.

  225. For I will show him how much he must suffer

  226. for the sake of my name.

  227. Being a Christian witness entails

  228. carrying the name of Jesus

  229. and suffering for the name of Jesus.

  230. If you live the way Christ lived

  231. and if you say the things that Christ said,

  232. you're going to be persecuted

  233. no matter where you live on this planet.

  234. Because the enemies of Christ

  235. will not leave you alone.

  236. But take heart,

  237. because those who suffer with Christ

  238. will also rise with him.

  239. Those who partake in his suffering

  240. will also partake in his resurrection glory.

  241. And so we are being called to follow this pattern

  242. that Christ has set for us.

  243. But curiously, verse 1

  244. describes the entirety of Jesus' earthly ministry

  245. right up to his ascension to heaven

  246. as what Jesus began to do and teach.

  247. Isn't that interesting?

  248. Isn't that interesting?

  249. In one sense, his earthly ministry is finished.

  250. And yet, that's only what he has begun to do.

  251. This is because his ministry now continues

  252. through the apostles and through the church.

  253. He says,

  254. He commanded through the Holy Spirit

  255. to the apostles whom he had chosen.

  256. The word apostle comes from the Greek word

  257. that means to send.

  258. The Latin equivalent of that word is missio

  259. from which we get the word missions.

  260. The apostles are missionaries.

  261. Sent out with the authority

  262. of the risen Christ.

  263. Eleven of these apostles

  264. are named in Acts 1, verse 13.

    Acts 1:13

  265. The original twelve minus Judas Iscariot,

  266. the traitor.

  267. And Jesus began his mission

  268. while here on earth.

  269. And he now continues that mission

  270. through the Holy Spirit

  271. in the ministry of the apostles.

  272. And that means we too

  273. are part of this ongoing mission.

  274. Because Ephesians 2, 19-21

  275. says that we are members

  276. of the household of God

  277. that is being built

  278. on the foundation of the apostles

  279. and prophets.

  280. Christ Jesus himself

  281. being the cornerstone.

  282. The people of God, the church,

  283. is the temple of the Lord

  284. being built up

  285. on the foundation of the apostles.

  286. We're part of the same building project

  287. as these apostles.

  288. And that's why the mission of Christ,

  289. the mission of the apostles

  290. is now also our mission.

  291. Sometimes we,

  292. as followers of Christ,

  293. become apathetic

  294. because we lose sight

  295. of our mission.

  296. Your life after conversion

  297. is not a victory lap.

  298. You're still in the race.

  299. Your mission is not yet complete.

  300. The confetti is not falling.

  301. You're not supposed to loiter around

  302. until you die and go to heaven.

  303. I don't know if you have ever been

  304. given a trust or responsibility

  305. that you felt was so weighty

  306. and important

  307. that you felt honored by it.

  308. Maybe you were selected

  309. to give a graduation speech

  310. as a representative of your class.

  311. Maybe it was when you first

  312. held a child in your arms.

  313. Maybe it was when you were given

  314. a special assignment by your boss

  315. or by your advisor.

  316. Brothers and sisters,

  317. this is the greatest honor

  318. of a Christian's life.

  319. Our mission is to know Christ

  320. and to make Him known.

  321. To treasure Christ

  322. and to trumpet Him to the world.

  323. The risen Lord Jesus Christ,

  324. whose name is exhausted

  325. above every other name,

  326. has given us personally

  327. a mission to fulfill.

  328. We are witnesses of the Lord Jesus.

  329. We are ambassadors

  330. of the kingdom of God.

  331. And don't think that the apostles

  332. were special, extraordinary men.

  333. The apostles were ordinary men.

  334. Acts chapter 4 verse 13

    Acts 4:13

  335. says that they were uneducated,

  336. common men.

  337. Not only that,

  338. they were sinful men.

  339. Men who often failed

  340. to grasp the significance

  341. of Jesus' teachings.

  342. Men who made many mistakes.

  343. And yet our merciful Lord

  344. gave them their sacred trust.

  345. And He extends that same trust

  346. to bumbling disciples like us.

  347. That He showed...

  348. I feel that keenly

  349. every time I stand on this pulpit

  350. because it was enough mercy

  351. for Him to save me.

  352. That was more than enough.

  353. And He could have said to me,

  354. Sean, now that I've saved you,

  355. just stay back

  356. and don't mess up

  357. anything I'm doing.

  358. But instead, He says,

  359. Sean, can you go

  360. and shepherd my flock?

  361. The precious ones

  362. I purchased with my own blood.

  363. Sean, can you go

  364. and preach the good news

  365. of the kingdom of God?

  366. Brothers and sisters,

  367. the Lord Jesus says

  368. also to you,

  369. here is my gospel,

  370. the pearl of greatest prize,

  371. the most precious treasure.

  372. Will you steward it?

  373. Will you share it

  374. that others too

  375. may be lifted out

  376. of their poverty

  377. of sin and shame?

  378. Here is my

  379. emancipation proclamation,

  380. the only message

  381. that can redeem people

  382. from their slavery to sin.

  383. Can you go

  384. and break the chains

  385. of my children?

  386. Brothers and sisters,

  387. in your home,

  388. at your school,

  389. at your workplace,

  390. in your neighborhood,

  391. among the nations,

  392. you have a most weighty

  393. and glorious mission

  394. in Jesus Christ.

  395. Do you remember it?

  396. Do you remember it?

  397. If that makes you,

  398. if you're champing

  399. at the bit to go

  400. when you hear that,

  401. that's probably

  402. how the apostles felt too.

  403. They just witnessed

  404. Jesus' resurrection.

  405. They're about to witness

  406. his ascension to heaven.

  407. You'd think they would be

  408. antsy and anxious

  409. to tell everyone

  410. about what they have seen.

  411. But Jesus tells them

  412. to hold their horses.

  413. He says in verses 4 to 5,

  414. While staying with them,

  415. Jesus ordered them

  416. not to depart from Jerusalem,

  417. but to wait

  418. for the promise

  419. of the Father,

  420. which he said,

  421. You heard from me,

  422. for John baptized with water,

  423. but you will be baptized

  424. with the Holy Spirit

  425. not many days from now.

  426. Why does Jesus do this?

  427. He feels like

  428. calling a timeout

  429. when your team is on a roll

  430. and scoring all the points.

  431. You just was raised

  432. from the dead,

  433. they couldn't stop you.

  434. Why must we wait?

  435. It's because until Jesus

  436. ascends to the right hand

  437. of the Father,

  438. the Spirit of God

  439. cannot descend.

  440. Because as Jesus said

  441. in John 16, verse 7,

    John 16:7

  442. If I do not go away,

  443. the Helper will not come to you,

  444. but if I go,

  445. I will send Him to you.

  446. It's only as the risen

  447. and ascended Lord

  448. that Jesus has the authority

  449. to send the Holy Spirit.

  450. And this is why

  451. He spends 40 days on earth

  452. after His resurrection,

  453. appearing to His disciples

  454. and speaking about

  455. the kingdom of God.

  456. Jesus' wilderness temptation

  457. in Luke chapter 4

    Luke 4 chapter mention

  458. was 40 days.

  459. Israel wandered in the wilderness

  460. for 40 years

  461. before coming into

  462. the promised land.

  463. The 40 days leading up

  464. to the final stage

  465. of Jesus'

  466. This 40 days

  467. is what's leading up

  468. to the final stage

  469. of Jesus' inauguration.

  470. His ascension to the throne.

  471. His full reign

  472. over His people.

  473. And when He ascends,

  474. Jesus fully comes

  475. into His kingdom

  476. over the church,

  477. over His people

  478. as the Messianic King.

  479. And from there,

  480. He reigns and sends His Spirit

  481. to empower His believers.

  482. And it's imperative

  483. that the apostles wait for that.

  484. Because without the Holy Spirit,

  485. they cannot accomplish

  486. their mission.

  487. They must first,

  488. it says,

  489. be baptized

  490. with the Holy Spirit.

  491. This is an allusion

  492. to Luke 3.16

  493. where John the Baptist

  494. spoke of how Jesus,

  495. who was to come after Him,

  496. would baptize people

  497. in the Spirit and fire.

  498. To baptize literally means

  499. to immerse.

  500. Just as John

  501. literally immersed

  502. people in water,

  503. signifying their repentance,

  504. Jesus will figuratively

  505. immerse people

  506. with the Holy Spirit

  507. and fire,

  508. pointing to the cleansing

  509. and purifying work

  510. of the Holy Spirit.

  511. It is the Spirit

  512. who sanctifies us,

  513. consecrates us

  514. for His God's special purposes.

  515. And not only that,

  516. it's the Spirit

  517. who empowers us

  518. for His mission.

  519. Jesus says in verse 8,

  520. but you will receive power

  521. when the Holy Spirit

  522. has come upon you.

  523. Without this power,

  524. the apostles are impotent,

  525. incapable of doing

  526. what Jesus has commissioned

  527. them to do.

  528. in Ezekiel 37,

  529. God paints a dramatic picture

  530. of the Holy Spirit's power.

  531. God brings prophet Ezekiel

  532. and sets him down

  533. in the middle of a valley

  534. full of bones,

  535. very dry bones,

  536. it says,

  537. which means these people

  538. have been dead

  539. for a long time.

  540. And God commands Ezekiel,

  541. prophesy over these bones

  542. and say to them,

  543. O dry bones,

  544. hear the word of the Lord.

  545. It's the toughest

  546. preaching assignment

  547. you can receive.

  548. Tell dry bones

  549. to hear the word of the Lord.

  550. And yet,

  551. when Ezekiel prophesies

  552. over them,

  553. the bones start to rattle

  554. and come together,

  555. sinews and flesh

  556. start to appear,

  557. skin starts to cover

  558. over them.

  559. And God commands Ezekiel,

  560. prophesy to the breath.

  561. Breath is the same word

  562. as spirit in Hebrew.

  563. Prophesy to the breath,

  564. thus says the Lord God,

  565. come from the four winds,

  566. O breath,

  567. and breathe on these slain

  568. that they may live.

  569. And when the breath of God

  570. enters what was once

  571. dry bones,

  572. the breath came into them

  573. and they lived

  574. and stood on their feet

  575. an exceedingly great army.

  576. And afterward,

  577. God explains to Ezekiel,

  578. these bones

  579. are the whole house

  580. of Israel.

  581. Behold,

  582. they say,

  583. our bones are dried up

  584. and our hope is lost.

  585. We are indeed cut off.

  586. Therefore,

  587. prophesy and say to them,

  588. thus says the Lord God,

  589. behold,

  590. I will open your graves

  591. and raise you

  592. from your graves,

  593. O my people.

  594. And I will put

  595. my spirit within you

  596. and you shall live.

  597. There can be

  598. no spiritual quickening,

  599. no spiritual awakening

  600. apart from the Spirit of God.

  601. Ephesians chapter 2,

    Ephesians 2:1

  602. verse 1 says

  603. that all unbelievers

  604. are dead

  605. in their trespasses

  606. and sins.

  607. And preaching

  608. to dead people

  609. is futile.

  610. Now,

  611. I guarantee you

  612. that at the end

  613. of that prophetic vision,

  614. Ezekiel was not

  615. patting himself

  616. on the back

  617. thinking what a great

  618. preacher he was.

  619. Look at me.

  620. Look at these bones

  621. coming together.

  622. But isn't that exactly

  623. what we do sometimes?

  624. It's easy for us

  625. mistakenly to think

  626. that people are saved

  627. by the eloquence

  628. of our preaching,

  629. the zeal

  630. of our evangelism,

  631. the efficiency

  632. of our organization,

  633. or the brilliance

  634. of our strategies,

  635. but souls

  636. are never

  637. saved by such things.

  638. When a spiritually

  639. dead person

  640. is made alive

  641. in Christ,

  642. when a spiritually

  643. blind person

  644. is made to see,

  645. it is always

  646. the mighty work

  647. of the Spirit

  648. of God.

  649. And so Jesus

  650. doesn't tell

  651. the apostles,

  652. hey,

  653. go and brainstorm

  654. for a little while,

  655. come up with

  656. a five-year plan

  657. for world domination.

  658. No,

  659. he tells them,

  660. go,

  661. wait

  662. for the Holy Spirit.

  663. Because the Holy Spirit

  664. is the power

  665. for Christian mission.

  666. Now look at the purview

  667. of Christian mission

  668. in verses 6 to 11.

  669. In verse 6,

  670. the apostles

  671. start to wonder,

  672. Lord,

  673. will you at this time

  674. restore the kingdom

  675. to Israel?

  676. They thought

  677. Israel's hope

  678. had been dashed

  679. with the death

  680. of Jesus,

  681. but now that he

  682. has risen from the dead,

  683. they were beginning

  684. to entertain thoughts

  685. of a national revolution

  686. and a political

  687. hegemony again.

  688. Jesus had already

  689. corrected this

  690. misunderstanding

  691. in Luke chapter 17,

    Luke 17 chapter mention

  692. 20 to 21,

  693. when the Pharisees

  694. asked him,

  695. when the kingdom

  696. of God would come,

  697. Jesus answered them,

  698. the kingdom of God

  699. is not coming

  700. in ways that can

  701. be observed,

  702. nor will they say,

  703. look,

  704. here it is,

  705. or there,

  706. for behold,

  707. the kingdom of God

  708. is in the midst

  709. of you.

  710. In other words,

  711. the kingdom of God

  712. is unobservable

  713. to the physical eye,

  714. yet already

  715. the kingdom of God

  716. is in our midst,

  717. it's among us,

  718. wherever Christ

  719. and his followers are,

  720. wherever Christ the king

  721. and his subjects are,

  722. that is where

  723. the kingdom of God

  724. is,

  725. because the kingdom

  726. of God

  727. is the dominion

  728. of the realm

  729. of God's rule.

  730. sometimes we too

  731. can be tempted

  732. to speak of the kingdom

  733. of God

  734. in geopolitical terms.

  735. In much the same way,

  736. the ancient Jews

  737. expected the establishment

  738. of the kingdom of God

  739. through the overthrow

  740. of the Roman Empire.

  741. But the kingdom of God

  742. does not come

  743. in observable ways.

  744. No matter how Christian

  745. its history

  746. and values are,

  747. and no matter how Christian

  748. the United States

  749. becomes,

  750. this country

  751. or any other country

  752. for that matter

  753. will never be

  754. the kingdom of God.

  755. Rather,

  756. the kingdom of God

  757. becomes manifest

  758. when we live

  759. in submission

  760. to God's rule

  761. as his people.

  762. And this kingdom

  763. continues to grow

  764. and spread

  765. until it takes hold

  766. among every nation

  767. on earth.

  768. And then Christ the king

  769. will return in glory

  770. to consummate his kingdom.

  771. over all the earth.

  772. And until that time,

  773. political power

  774. or military triumph

  775. is not the lot

  776. of God's people.

  777. So Jesus gently redirects them

  778. in verses 7 to 8.

  779. It is not for you

  780. to know times or seasons

  781. that the Father

  782. has fixed

  783. by his own authority.

  784. But you will receive power

  785. when the Holy Spirit

  786. has come upon you

  787. and you will be my witnesses

  788. in Jerusalem

  789. and in all Judea

  790. and Samaria

  791. and to the end

  792. of the earth.

  793. They will receive power,

  794. all right,

  795. but not the power

  796. to crush Roman armies,

  797. not the power

  798. for political domination,

  799. not the power

  800. to rule over the heathens,

  801. but the power

  802. to bear witness

  803. to Jesus

  804. among them.

  805. Jesus masterfully

  806. adjusts the worldly

  807. dynamics of power

  808. that the apostles

  809. had uncritically accepted.

  810. Furthermore,

  811. Jesus tells us

  812. that it is not for us

  813. to know

  814. when the end will be.

  815. Instead of being

  816. unduly preoccupied

  817. with predicting the end,

  818. we should be occupied

  819. with bearing faithful witness

  820. till the end.

  821. As Matthew 24,

    Matthew 24:14

  822. verse 14 says,

  823. And this gospel

  824. of the kingdom

  825. will be proclaimed

  826. throughout the whole world

  827. as a testimony

  828. to all nations,

  829. and then the end

  830. will come.

  831. The focus should be

  832. on what Christ

  833. commands us to do

  834. in the meanwhile

  835. and not on when

  836. Christ will return.

  837. We know that

  838. Christ will return

  839. and that's enough.

  840. We do not need

  841. to know when.

  842. And this is what

  843. Jesus commands us

  844. to be my witnesses,

  845. he says.

  846. A witness affirms

  847. or attests

  848. to something,

  849. something outside

  850. of themselves.

  851. Followers of Christ

  852. are commanded

  853. to attest to

  854. and give testimony

  855. regarding the person

  856. and work

  857. of Jesus Christ.

  858. His life,

  859. his death,

  860. his resurrection,

  861. his ascension.

  862. Our mission

  863. is not to create

  864. platforms for ourselves

  865. to rise to prominence

  866. ourselves,

  867. to proclaim ourselves

  868. and our experiences.

  869. But it is to make

  870. Christ prominent,

  871. to proclaim Christ,

  872. who he is

  873. and what he has done.

  874. And we can't forget this,

  875. brothers and sisters,

  876. we're not the saviors

  877. of this world.

  878. Christ is the savior

  879. that this world needs

  880. and our task

  881. is to point the world

  882. to him,

  883. the only person

  884. who can save.

  885. It is not our job

  886. to save this world.

  887. That's what we're witnesses.

  888. Christ is on trial

  889. before the eyes

  890. of our neighbors.

  891. Christ is on trial

  892. before the eyes

  893. of the watching world.

  894. And they're asking,

  895. is Jesus

  896. who he really claimed to be?

  897. Is Jesus really

  898. the messianic king?

  899. Is Jesus really

  900. the son of God?

  901. Is Jesus really

  902. the lamb of God

  903. who takes away

  904. the sin of the world?

  905. Can Jesus

  906. give me hope

  907. and cleanse me

  908. from my sins?

  909. Can Jesus

  910. reconcile me

  911. to God?

  912. The world

  913. is literally

  914. dying

  915. before our eyes.

  916. And worse,

  917. they are perishing

  918. forever,

  919. spiritually.

  920. Spiritually.

  921. And there are those

  922. who perish

  923. even now

  924. without hearing

  925. one witness.

  926. Stand up for Christ

  927. and say,

  928. yes,

  929. I know this Jesus.

  930. He is my Lord

  931. and King

  932. and he is everything

  933. he says he is.

  934. this is why

  935. we have to go

  936. and make disciples

  937. of all nations.

  938. He has asked us

  939. be my witnesses.

  940. And where should we go?

  941. Jesus tells us

  942. you will be my witnesses

  943. in Jerusalem

  944. and in all Judea

  945. and Samaria

  946. and to the end

  947. of the earth.

  948. This verse functions

  949. as the thesis statement

  950. of the entire book.

  951. The entire Gospel of Luke

  952. had a movement

  953. toward Jerusalem

  954. where climactically

  955. Jesus would die

  956. and be raised

  957. from the dead.

  958. And then the entire

  959. book of Acts

  960. is a movement

  961. away from Jerusalem.

  962. Following

  963. the apostles

  964. for spreading

  965. the good news

  966. of Jesus

  967. from Jerusalem

  968. to Judea and Samaria

  969. and to the end

  970. of the earth.

  971. The mission

  972. of the church

  973. begins in Jerusalem

  974. because that's where

  975. Joel chapter 2

    Joel 2:32

  976. verse 32

  977. prophesied

  978. that the promised

  979. Holy Spirit

  980. would come.

  981. Jerusalem,

  982. the ancient capital

  983. of Judah,

  984. the city of David,

  985. where the temple

  986. of God is,

  987. the very center

  988. of Jewish worship.

  989. This is,

  990. that's the origin

  991. from which the reign

  992. of Christ,

  993. the Messiah,

  994. the ultimate king

  995. spreads.

  996. Then it moves

  997. to all Judea and Samaria

  998. which includes

  999. the territories

  1000. that were once

  1001. part of the southern

  1002. kingdom of Judah

  1003. and the northern

  1004. kingdom of Israel

  1005. after the division

  1006. during the days

  1007. of Rehoboan.

  1008. And then the end

  1009. of the earth,

  1010. finally,

  1011. is the known

  1012. inhabited world.

  1013. At the time,

  1014. Acts was written

  1015. that was considered

  1016. to be

  1017. Scythia to the north,

  1018. Ethiopia to the south,

  1019. which is modern-day

  1020. Sudan,

  1021. Spain to the west,

  1022. and India and China

  1023. to the east.

  1024. And since Luke

  1025. explicitly mentions

  1026. Philip's ministry

  1027. to the Ethiopian eunuch

  1028. in Acts 8,

  1029. and since Paul

  1030. mentions the Scythians

  1031. in Colossians 3.11

  1032. and also expresses

  1033. his desire to go

  1034. to Spain

  1035. in Romans 15,

  1036. it seems that the

  1037. apostles took this

  1038. command quite literally

1039. that they were to go

1040. to the end of the earth,

  1041. as far as they

  1042. possibly can go.

1043. And if they did this

  1044. on foot,

  1045. with their limited

  1046. understanding of

  1047. world geography,

  1048. we who have uncovered

  1049. the farthest extremities

  1050. of earth

  1051. have no reason

  1052. not to go.

  1053. But this commission

  1054. is not merely

  1055. geographical in scope,

  1056. it's also ethnic.

  1057. As I mentioned earlier,

  1058. Jerusalem was a center

  1059. of Jewish worship.

  1060. And further out,

1061. in all Judea and Samaria,

  1062. you found more folk

  1063. and syncretistic

  1064. expressions of Jewish faith.

  1065. For example,

  1066. Samaria was the capital

  1067. of the northern kingdom

  1068. of Israel,

  1069. and that name,

  1070. Samaria,

  1071. gets sometimes used

1072. to refer to the entire

  1073. northern kingdom.

  1074. And when the Assyrians

  1075. captured Samaria

  1076. in 722 B.C.,

  1077. they deported

  1078. all the Israelites

  1079. of substance and means

  1080. and then settled

1081. the rest of the land

  1082. with foreigners.

  1083. And these foreigners

  1084. then intermarried

  1085. with the Jews

  1086. who were left there,

  1087. leading to a form

  1088. of syncretized religion.

  1089. And because of this,

  1090. Jews,

  1091. who had been deported

  1092. and then later returned

  1093. to their homeland

  1094. from exile,

  1095. they viewed

  1096. these Samaritans

  1097. not only as children

  1098. of political rebels,

  1099. compromisers,

  1100. but also as racial

  1101. half-breeds

  1102. and syncretistic,

  1103. adulterated believers.

  1104. But the apostles

  1105. are called to go

  1106. even to the Samaritans.

  1107. And then finally,

1108. the end of the earth.

1109. This is where you find

  1110. the Gentiles,

  1111. the pagans

  1112. who are farthest

  1113. removed

  1114. from the Jewish faith.

  1115. That was me

  1116. and many of you.

  1117. That this ethnic scope

  1118. is in view here

  1119. is confirmed

  1120. by the Messianic prophecy

  1121. of Isaiah 49,

    Isaiah 49:6

  1122. verse 6,

  1123. which Acts 1a

  1124. alludes to.

  1125. It says,

1126. It is too light a thing

  1127. that you should be

  1128. my servant

  1129. to raise up

  1130. the tribes of Jacob

  1131. and to bring back

  1132. the preserved

  1133. of Israel.

  1134. I will make you

  1135. as a light

  1136. for the nations,

  1137. some translations

  1138. say to the Gentiles,

  1139. that my salvation

  1140. may reach

  1141. to the end

  1142. of the earth.

  1143. Reaching the end

  1144. of the earth

  1145. means to go

  1146. to the nations.

  1147. And that word nation

  1148. refers to ethnic

  1149. people groups.

  1150. This is also confirmed

  1151. by the parallel

  1152. in Luke chapter 24,

    Luke 24:47

  1153. verse 47,

  1154. where Jesus says

1155. that He died and rose

  1156. so that repentance

  1157. for the forgiveness

  1158. of sins

  1159. should be proclaimed

  1160. in His name

  1161. to all nations

  1162. beginning from Jerusalem.

  1163. Once again,

  1164. referring to ethnic

  1165. people groups.

  1166. So this command

  1167. to be Christ's witnesses

  1168. in Jerusalem

  1169. and in all Judea

  1170. and Samaria

  1171. and to the end

  1172. of the earth

  1173. not only traverses

  1174. geographic boundaries,

  1175. but it also

  1176. transgresses

  1177. ethnic divisions.

  1178. this is why

  1179. as a church

  1180. we pray each month

  1181. for a specific

  1182. people group

  1183. of a country.

  1184. For the Sheikh

  1185. people in Bangladesh,

  1186. the Sunda people

  1187. in Indonesia,

  1188. the Persian people

  1189. in Iran,

  1190. the Bammar people

  1191. in Myanmar,

  1192. the Hausa people

  1193. in Nigeria,

  1194. and so on.

  1195. All of these

  1196. people groups

  1197. we pray for

  1198. are considered

  1199. unreached

  1200. or least reached,

  1201. which means

  1202. no more than

  1203. 2% of their

  1204. population

  1205. are gospel-believing

  1206. Christians,

  1207. which means

  1208. they lack

  1209. the sheer numbers

  1210. and the resources

  1211. necessary.

  1212. they need

  1213. witnesses of

  1214. Jesus

  1215. to be sent

  1216. among them.

  1217. And I pray

  1218. that God

  1219. sends more

  1220. laborers

  1221. into that

  1222. harvest

  1223. even from

  1224. among us.

  1225. This is the

  1226. purview of

  1227. Christian mission.

  1228. Our mission

  1229. is global

  1230. in scope

  1231. because it

  1232. is too

  1233. small a

  1234. thing

  1235. for the

  1236. Lord Jesus

  1237. who is

  1238. exalted

  1239. above

  1240. every other

  1241. name

  1242. to save

  1243. the Jews

  1244. only,

  1245. to rule

  1246. over

  1247. Israel

  1248. only.

  1249. He will

  1250. instead

  1251. save

  1252. and reign

  1253. over Jews,

  1254. Samaritans,

  1255. and Gentiles,

  1256. people from

  1257. all the

  1258. nations.

  1259. We live

  1260. in Cambridge

  1261. in Boston,

  1262. the Jerusalem

  1263. of modern

  1264. education.

  1265. And because

  1266. of this,

  1267. we have

  1268. people from

  1269. these very

  1270. unreached

  1271. people groups

  1272. coming into

  1273. our city

  1274. from all

  1275. over the

  1276. world.

  1277. The nations

  1278. are among

  1279. us and so

  1280. let's be

  1281. faithful to

  1282. bear witness

  1283. to them.

  1284. The fact

  1285. that we

  1286. live in a

  1287. highly transient

  1288. city also

  1289. presents a

  1290. unique opportunity

  1291. for us

  1292. as long as

  1293. we remember

  1294. that our

  1295. identity

  1296. is as

  1297. witnesses

  1298. of Jesus,

  1299. that we

  1300. are sent

  1301. ones.

  1302. So if

  1303. you're not

  1304. here for

  1305. a time

  1306. just to

  1307. get your

  1308. degree

  1309. or finish

  1310. your

  1311. research

  1312. or project

  1313. or to

  1314. work a

  1315. job

  1316. until you

  1317. move to

  1318. the next

  1319. step,

  1320. while you're

  1321. here,

  1322. you are

  1323. witnesses

  1324. of Jesus

  1325. Christ.

  1326. And when

  1327. you leave

  1328. this place,

  1329. you are not

  1330. just going to

  1331. another place

  1332. to do

  1333. something else,

  1334. you're also

  1335. sent out

  1336. there as

  1337. witnesses

  1338. of Jesus

  1339. Christ.

  1340. And after

  1341. giving the

  1342. apostles this

  1343. charge,

  1344. Jesus ascends

  1345. to heaven

  1346. in verses

  1347. 9 to

  1348. 11,

  1349. and when

  1350. he has

  1351. said these

  1352. things as

  1353. they were

  1354. looking on,

  1355. he was

  1356. lifted up,

  1357. and a

  1358. cloud took

  1359. him out

  1360. of their

  1361. sight.

  1362. And while

  1363. they were

  1364. gazing into

  1365. heaven as

  1366. he went,

  1367. behold,

  1368. two men

  1369. stood by

  1370. them in

  1371. white robes

  1372. and said,

  1373. Men of

  1374. Galilee,

  1375. why do you

  1376. stand looking

  1377. into heaven?

  1378. This Jesus

  1379. who was taken

  1380. up from you

  1381. into heaven

  1382. will come

  1383. in the same

  1384. way as

  1385. you saw

  1386. him go

  1387. into heaven.

  1388. This verse

  1389. intentionally

  1390. parallels the

  1391. account of the

  1392. transfiguration in

  1393. Luke chapter

    Luke 9 chapter mention

  1394. 9,

  1395. where his

  1396. clothing also

  1397. became dazzling

  1398. white.

  1399. He was joined

  1400. by two men

  1401. there,

  1402. and then a

  1403. cloud came and

  1404. overshadowed

  1405. them.

  1406. And the

  1407. difference is that

  1408. the transfiguration

  1409. was only for a

  1410. moment,

  1411. but at his

  1412. ascension,

  1413. Jesus is

  1414. translated into

  1415. glory permanently.

  1416. And Jesus'

  1417. ascension is the

  1418. guarantee that he

  1419. will return in

  1420. glory in the

  1421. same way he

  1422. went up.

  1423. And that

  1424. reality should

  1425. give us hope

  1426. as we bear

  1427. witness to

  1428. Jesus,

  1429. because though

  1430. we might be

  1431. rejected,

  1432. and we will

  1433. be,

  1434. though people

  1435. might not

  1436. believe us,

  1437. though people

  1438. might persecute

  1439. us,

  1440. we bear witness

  1441. knowing that

  1442. Christ will

  1443. return to

  1444. vindicate us.

  1445. He will come

  1446. back in glory.

  1447. And that brings

  1448. me to my

  1449. final point,

  1450. prayer and

  1451. Christian mission.

  1452. Please follow

  1453. along with me

  1454. as I read

  1455. verses 12 to

  1456. 14.

  1457. Then they

  1458. returned to

  1459. Jerusalem from

  1460. the mount

  1461. called Olivet,

  1462. which is near

  1463. Jerusalem, a

  1464. Sabbath day's

  1465. journey away.

  1466. And when they

  1467. had entered,

  1468. they went up to

  1469. the upper room

  1470. where they were

  1471. staying, Peter

  1472. and John and

  1473. James and

  1474. Andrew, Philip

  1475. and Thomas,

  1476. Bartholomew and

  1477. Matthew, James

  1478. the son of

  1479. Alphaeus and

  1480. Simon the

  1481. Zealot, and

  1482. Judas the son

  1483. of James.

  1484. All these,

  1485. with one

  1486. accord, were

  1487. devoting

  1488. themselves to

  1489. prayer, together

  1490. with the woman

  1491. and Mary, the

  1492. mother of Jesus,

  1493. and his

  1494. brothers.

  1495. After Jesus

  1496. then sends to

  1497. heaven on the

  1498. Mount of Olives,

  1499. the apostles make

  1500. their way back to

  1501. their abode in

  1502. Jerusalem, wherever

  1503. they were staying

  1504. in Jerusalem.

  1505. And then they

  1506. head up into the

  1507. upper room where

  1508. they were staying.

  1509. It's possible that

  1510. this is the same

  1511. upper room where

  1512. Jesus had the

  1513. Last Supper, but

  1514. Luke does not

  1515. specify, and there

  1516. were many such

  1517. upper rooms, so

  1518. it's impossible to

  1519. say for sure.

  1520. But what's

  1521. important is what

  1522. they do there.

  1523. And it says what

  1524. they're doing as

  1525. they're waiting for

  1526. the Holy Spirit in

  1527. Jerusalem.

  1528. It says in verse

  1529. 14, all these with

  1530. one accord were

  1531. devoting themselves

  1532. to prayer.

  1533. The verb

  1534. devote means to be

  1535. busily engaged in

  1536. something.

  1537. Too often, we as

  1538. modern believers are

  1539. too busily engaged in

  1540. other activities to

  1541. pray.

  1542. But the earliest

  1543. believers were

  1544. devoting themselves

  1545. to prayer.

  1546. What would your

  1547. biographer say that

  1548. you were devoted to

  1549. in life?

  1550. That you were

  1551. devoted to your

  1552. spouse, your kids,

  1553. your work, your

  1554. studies, to a

  1555. hobby, a football

  1556. team, sports?

  1557. Traveling?

  1558. Drinking?

  1559. What would a

  1560. historian writing

  1561. about our church

  1562. one day say we

  1563. were devoted to?

  1564. The early believers

  1565. were devoted to

  1566. prayer.

  1567. And they were also

  1568. doing this with one

  1569. accord.

  1570. It says in unity,

  1571. not only together in

  1572. one place, but also

  1573. together in one

  1574. heart and one

  1575. mind.

  1576. If you remember from

  1577. the Gospel of Luke,

  1578. before every pivotal

  1579. moment of Jesus' life

  1580. and ministry, Luke

  1581. tells us that Jesus

  1582. was praying before

  1583. he's baptized and the

  1584. Spirit of God

  1585. descends on him and

  1586. the Father speaks of

1587. him saying, this is my

  1588. beloved Son in whom

  1589. I am well pleased.

  1590. Jesus is praying

  1591. before that.

  1592. Before he chooses

  1593. his twelve apostles,

  1594. Jesus is praying.

  1595. Before he teaches

1596. them how to pray with

  1597. the Lord's Prayer,

  1598. Jesus is praying.

  1599. Before Peter's

  1600. breakthrough confession

  1601. that Christ, Jesus

1602. is the Christ of God,

  1603. Jesus was praying.

  1604. Before the

  1605. transfiguration and

  1606. his transform

  1607. into glory, Jesus

  1608. was praying.

  1609. And before his

  1610. betrayal and death,

  1611. Jesus was praying.

  1612. And Luke is going

  1613. to continue that

  1614. emphasis throughout

  1615. the book of Acts.

  1616. And once again, we

  1617. see here, before the

  1618. descent of the Holy

  1619. Spirit to empower the

  1620. church for mission,

  1621. prayer.

  1622. And the believers

  1623. are not just waiting

  1624. about doing nothing.

  1625. They are devoting

  1626. themselves to prayer.

  1627. Prayer is a

  1628. hallmark of faith.

  1629. It's one of our

  1630. greatest Christian

  1631. vocations.

  1632. None of us are

  1633. apostles.

1634. Yet all of us can

  1635. pray like the woman

  1636. disciples that are

  1637. mentioned here.

  1638. And Mary, the mother

  1639. of Jesus and his

  1640. brothers who are

  1641. praying with the

  1642. apostles.

  1643. Not everyone can be

  1644. preachers and pastors,

1645. yet all of us can

  1646. pray.

  1647. And as the 19th

  1648. century English

  1649. pastor Charles Spurgeon

  1650. puts it, prayer is

  1651. the slender nerve that

  1652. moves the muscle of

  1653. omnipotence.

  1654. successful Christian

  1655. missions work is

  1656. never a calculable

  1657. result, a

  1658. predictable result of

  1659. correct methods and

  1660. strategies.

  1661. It is always the

  1662. sovereign work of the

  1663. Holy Spirit.

  1664. And for that reason,

  1665. it is always the

  1666. fruit of concerted

  1667. prayer.

  1668. So missiologist

  1669. Wilbert Schenk puts it

  1670. this way.

  1671. Missionary obedience

1672. is first of all an

  1673. act of submission to

  1674. the leadership of the

  1675. Holy Spirit.

  1676. Strategic thinking

  1677. ought to begin and

  1678. end with the

  1679. prayer, your will be

  1680. done.

  1681. And that's my prayer

  1682. this evening.

  1683. That we would bear

  1684. witness to Jesus

1685. Christ to the end of

1686. the earth by the power

  1687. of the Holy Spirit

1688. and that we would be

  1689. a people who devote

  1690. ourselves to pray in

  1691. preparation for that,

  1692. for the empowerment

1693. that we need for that.

  1694. Let's pray.

1695. God, we do seek this

  1696. power.

1697. Lord, please wake us up

1698. to our senses to realize

  1699. how impotent we are,

  1700. how futile all our

  1701. endeavors are apart from

  1702. the empowering work of

  1703. your Holy Spirit.

  1704. Grant us that power,

  1705. Lord.

1706. Fill us with your Spirit,

  1707. Lord.

  1708. Move us to prayer,

  1709. Lord.

  1710. That we might bear

1711. witness to the name of

1712. Jesus to the end of the

  1713. earth.

1714. In Jesus' name we pray.

  1715. Amen.

  1716. Amen.

  1717. Amen.

  1718. Amen.

  1719. Amen.

  1720. Amen.

  1721. Amen.

  1722. Amen.

  1723. Amen.

  1724. Amen.

  1725. Amen.

  1726. Amen.

  1727. Amen.

  1728. Amen.

  1729. Amen.

  1730. Amen.

  1731. Amen.

  1732. Amen.

  1733. Amen.

  1734. Amen.
