  1. We live nowadays in a designer society where people like everything customized to their

  2. personal preferences and needs, and increasingly people apply that approach to religion as

  3. well.

  4. Many people in the U.S. still claim to be Christians, but are completely untethered from traditional

  5. beliefs and practices of Christians.

  6. For example, one woman named Carol from Illinois, and this is a result from a survey, says that

  7. she drifted through a few mainline Protestant denominations in her youth, then experimented

  8. with the Baha'i faith for several years, but now finds herself enmeshed in Native American

  9. traditional healing practices, but she still identifies as Christian.

  10. This isn't happening to Christianity only.

  11. Nadine Epstein of the Jewish magazine Moment writes that most Jewish people nowadays believe

  12. that there can be Judaism without God.

  13. Their approach, she summarizes, is, quote, you pick and choose the part of religion that

  14. makes sense to you, end quote.

  15. Identifying these trends, religion statistics expert George Barna exaggerates to drive home

  16. a point when he says that the U.S. is headed for 310 million people with 310 million religions.

  17. That kind of buffet approach to religion, well, that kind of buffet approach in general, it works

  18. with things like diets.

  19. You can take a paleo diet or a keto diet and modify them to suit your preferences and needs,

  20. but you can't do that with historic Christianity.

  21. Because historic Christianity teaches what we call the apostolic faith.

  22. It's what the apostles taught, and it's what the apostles transmitted, handed down to us.

  23. This is why the 12 apostles of Jesus Christ play such a foundational role in the history of Christianity.

  24. And the main point of this passage is that God appointed the 12 apostles to be vice-regents of the kingdom of God

  25. who bear witness to Christ the King.

  26. So let me pray before we read this text and I preach it.

  27. God, we ask for your help.

  28. You place this account of the appointment of the 12th apostle, Matthias, here for a reason.

  29. Amen.

  30. To edify us, to teach us.

  31. To impart to us the importance of the gospel, the sacred trust that you have given us.

  32. So please, speak to us now.

  33. In Jesus' name we pray.

  34. Amen.

  35. Acts 1, 15 to 26.

  36. In those days, Peter stood up among the brothers.

  37. The company of persons was in all about 120.

  38. And said,

  39. Brothers, the scripture had to be fulfilled,

  40. which the Holy Spirit spoke beforehand by the mouth of David concerning Judas,

  41. who became a guide to those who arrested Jesus.

  42. For he was numbered among us and was allotted his share in this ministry.

  43. Now this man acquired a field with the reward of his wickedness.

  44. And falling headlong, he burst open in the middle and all his bowels gushed out.

  45. And it became known to all the inhabitants of Jerusalem,

  46. so that the field was called in their own language,

  47. a keldama, that is, field of blood.

  48. For it is written in the book of Psalms,

  49. may his camp become desolate and let there be no one else,

  50. no one to dwell in it.

  51. And let another take his office.

  52. So one of the men who have accompanied us during all the time that the Lord Jesus went in and out among us,

  53. beginning from the baptism of John until the day when he was taken up from us,

  54. one of these men must become with us a witness to his resurrection.

  55. And they put forward two,

  56. Joseph, called Barsabbas,

  57. who was also called Justice,

  58. and Matthias.

  59. And they prayed and said,

  60. You, Lord, who know the hearts of all,

  61. show which one of these two you have chosen

  62. to take the place in this ministry and apostleship,

  63. from which Judas turned aside to go to his own place.

  64. And they cast lots for them,

  65. and the lot fell in Matthias.

  66. And he was numbered with the eleven apostles.

  67. Last week we saw that Jesus gave special parting instructions to the apostles whom he had chosen.

  68. And in verse 13, Luke listed the names of these apostles.

  69. Conspicuously, there were only eleven apostles in that list,

  70. as we noted last week,

  71. because Judas Iscariot, who had betrayed Jesus to his death,

  72. had been omitted from the list.

  73. And this betrayal and Judas' kind of departure from the apostles

  74. was a sore point for the remaining eleven apostles.

  75. And it raised a host of questions.

  76. You know, how could Judas do this?

  77. Why did it happen?

  78. Was it supposed to happen?

  79. Was that part of God's plan?

  80. What happened to Judas afterward anyway?

  81. And also because Jesus chose the twelve apostles in Luke 6

  82. intentionally to show that he is reconstituting the people of God,

  83. because in the Old Testament,

  84. the people of God were made up for the twelve tribes of Israel,

  85. descended from the twelve sons of Jacob.

  86. And in Luke 22, verses 28 to 30,

    Luke 22:28–30

  87. Jesus had said to his apostles,

  88. You are those who have stayed with me in my trials.

  89. And I assigned to you,

  90. as my Father assigned to me,

  91. a kingdom,

  92. that you may eat and drink at my table in my kingdom

  93. and sit on thrones,

  94. judging the twelve tribes of Israel.

  95. The twelve apostles were appointed

  96. to sit on thrones in the kingdom of God

  97. to judge the people of God,

  98. the twelve tribes of Israel.

  99. This is most likely why in Revelation chapter 4,

    Revelation 4 chapter mention

  100. around the throne of God,

  101. there are twenty-four elders

  102. seated on twenty-four thrones,

  103. signifying the unity of God's people

  104. represented by the twelve tribes of Israel

  105. from the Old Testament

  106. and the twelve apostles of the New Testament church.

  107. So the betrayal of Judas

  108. naturally raised the question,

  109. Who will be the twelfth apostle?

  110. Because there's only eleven now.

  111. And so starting in verse 15,

  112. Luke answers all of these questions.

  113. He's really addressing the elephant in the room

  114. as the early disciples are gathered together.

  115. He says in verse 15,

  116. In those days,

  117. Peter stood up among the brothers.

  118. The company of persons was in all about hundred and twenty.

  119. So in those days refers to

  120. the period between Jesus' ascent to heaven

  121. in chapter 1, verse 9,

  122. and the Holy Spirit's descent in chapter 2,

  123. which we'll see shortly next week.

  124. And Peter, as the leader of the twelve apostles,

  125. stands up to address the early believers.

  126. It says that there were about 120 people,

  127. so this is a larger crowd

  128. than the group of apostles

  129. along with the other disciples

  130. and the woman and the Mary,

  131. the mother of Jesus and his brothers,

  132. who are praying together in the upper room

  133. in chapter 1, verses 13 to 14.

  134. And the word brothers here stands collectively,

  135. so it represents both brothers and sisters

  136. that are gathered among them.

  137. And we know that Peter was the leader among the twelve

  138. because he is always listed first

  139. in the list of the twelve apostles.

  140. Matthew 10, verse 2, Mark 3, verse 16.

    Matthew 10:2 Mark 3:16

  141. And he always speaks first on behalf of the twelve.

  142. You see that all throughout the Gospels as well.

  143. Throughout the book of Acts also,

  144. we see Peter playing a leading role

  145. in the life of the church in Jerusalem

  146. and in their missionary outreaches

  147. until he's forced to leave the city in Acts 12, 17.

  148. And it's because Peter was the leader

  149. and representative of the twelve

  150. that Jesus says specifically to him

  151. in Matthew, chapter 16, verses 18 to 19.

    Matthew 16:18–19

  152. And I tell you, you are Peter,

  153. and on this rock I will build my church.

  154. And the gates of...

  155. It should be Hades.

  156. Gates of Hades shall not prevail against it.

  157. I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven,

  158. and whatever you bind on earth

  159. shall be bound in heaven,

  160. and whatever you lose on earth

  161. shall be loosed in heaven.

  162. Now, the name Peter means rock.

  163. And so Jesus is here very clearly saying

  164. that he will build a church on Peter.

  165. But this is not because God intended Peter to be...

  166. Peter and his successor to be some sort of pope

  167. who is the head over the entire church.

  168. Rather, Jesus is saying this to Peter

  169. as a representative of the twelve,

  170. the twelve apostles.

  171. Because later in Matthew 18, 18,

  172. he gives the exact same promise

  173. that he just gave to Peter

  174. to all the apostles.

  175. Truly I say to you,

  176. that's plural you,

  177. whatever you bind on earth

  178. will be bound in heaven,

  179. and whatever you lose on earth

  180. will be loosed in heaven.

  181. So this is not a promise

  182. that's given exclusively to Peter.

  183. It's given to all of the apostles.

  184. And that's because the apostles,

  185. as Ephesians 2.20 says,

  186. are the foundation of the church,

  187. with Christ Jesus himself being a cornerstone.

  188. So he is building the church on Peter

  189. as representative of the apostles.

  190. And by extension,

  191. then this is the authority

  192. given to the apostolic church,

  193. the church that holds fast

  194. to the apostolic gospel.

  195. All that to say,

  196. Peter is the leader of the twelve,

  197. which is why he is the one

  198. that stands up to dress

  199. the company of believers here.

  200. And the fact that Peter

  201. still holds this position of leadership

  202. is itself a testimony of God's mercy.

  203. You were with us

  204. when we were going through Luke.

  205. And in Luke chapter 22,

    Luke 22 chapter mention

  206. 31 to 32,

  207. when prophesying of Peter's

  208. eventual denial of him three times,

  209. Jesus said to him,

  210. but I pray for you

  211. that your faith may not fail.

  212. And when you have turned again,

  213. strengthen your brothers.

  214. And as Jesus predicted,

  215. Peter denied the Lord three times

  216. and then he wept bitterly,

  217. it says,

  218. because of his failure.

  219. But as Jesus exhorted him,

  220. commanded him,

  221. now after having turned back,

  222. Peter strengthens his brothers.

  223. And Peter says this

  224. in verses 16 to 17,

  225. brothers,

  226. the scripture had to be fulfilled,

  227. which the Holy Spirit

  228. spoke beforehand

  229. by the mouth of David

  230. concerning Judas,

  231. who became a guide

  232. to those who arrested Jesus.

  233. For he was numbered among us

  234. and was allotted his share

  235. in this ministry.

  236. The phrase,

  237. scripture had to be fulfilled,

  238. answers the question,

  239. all the questions really

  240. that I raised earlier.

  241. Was Judas' betrayal necessary?

  242. Was this part of God's plan?

  243. The Holy Spirit,

  244. according to Peter,

  245. had already spoken beforehand

  246. about how Judas

  247. would become a guide

  248. to those who arrested Jesus.

  249. And Peter proves this

  250. by citing Psalm 69,

    Psalms 69:25

  251. verse 25,

  252. and Psalm 109,

    Psalms 109:8

  253. verse 8,

  254. in verse 20.

  255. It says in verse 20,

  256. for it is written

  257. in the book of Psalms,

  258. may his camp become desolate,

  259. and let there be no one

  260. to dwell in it,

  261. and let another take his office.

  262. If you were to read

  263. these Psalms independently,

  264. you might have never guessed

  265. that they're actually

  266. predicting this about Judas

  267. and about Jesus.

  268. But these,

  269. but this,

  270. the Bible authors,

  271. the biblical writers

  272. make the kinds of connections

  273. that they make here

  274. because they are thinking

  275. typologically.

  276. What I mean by that

  277. is that they see

  278. the figures

  279. and the offices

  280. and the institutions

  281. of the Old Testament

  282. as all prefiguring

  283. Jesus Christ

  284. and all pointing to

  285. and foreshadowing

  286. and ultimately being fulfilled

  287. by Jesus Christ.

  288. And so Israel's 40 days

  289. in the wilderness

  290. becomes a type

  291. of Jesus's 40 days

  292. in the wilderness.

  293. They're 40 years,

  294. Jesus's 40 days.

  295. And King David

  296. becomes a type

  297. of King Jesus

  298. who is the ultimate fulfillment

  299. from the line of David.

  300. The temple

  301. becomes a type

  302. of Jesus

  303. who describes himself

  304. as the new temple of God

  305. who makes atonement

  306. for sin.

  307. So this is typological

  308. interpretation

  309. of Scripture.

  310. Now,

  311. using this,

  312. they make some

  313. compelling

  314. and interesting connections

  315. to the Psalms.

  316. So Psalm 69

  317. is a Psalm of David

  318. where he cries out

  319. to God

  320. for salvation

  321. from his enemies

  322. who,

  323. according to verse 4,

  324. hate him without cause.

  325. Now,

  326. John 15, 25

  327. cites that verse

  328. to describe

  329. the enemies of Jesus

  330. as those who hate him

  331. without cause.

  332. So this is other

  333. biblical writers

  334. making the same kinds

  335. of connections

  336. that Peter is making here.

  337. David also says

  338. in Psalm 69,

    Psalms 69:9

  339. verse 9,

  340. for zeal for your house

  341. has consumed me

  342. and the reproaches

  343. of those who reproach you

  344. have fallen on me.

  345. And John quotes

  346. this verse

  347. after Jesus'

  348. cleansing of the temple

  349. in John 2, 17

  350. to describe Jesus'

  351. zeal for the temple

  352. of God.

  353. So once again,

  354. Jesus fulfilling

  355. what was said

  356. about David.

  357. And then in Psalm 69,

    Psalms 69:21

  358. verse 21,

  359. David says

  360. of his enemies,

  361. for my thirst

  362. they give me

  363. sour wine to drink.

  364. And then John

  365. recounts its fulfillment

  366. in chapter 19,

  367. verses 28 to 29.

  368. Jesus said

  369. to fulfill the scripture,

  370. I thirst.

  371. And a jar full

  372. of sour wine

  373. stood there,

  374. so they put a sponge

  375. full of the sour wine

  376. on a hyssop branch

  377. and held it to his mouth.

  378. Moreover,

  379. describing the Jews

  380. who rejected Jesus

  381. in Romans 11, 9 to 10,

  382. Paul quotes Psalm 69,

  383. 22 to 23.

  384. And David says,

  385. let their table

  386. become a snare

  387. and a trap,

  388. a stumbling block

  389. and a retribution

  390. for them.

  391. Let their eyes

  392. be darkened

  393. so that they cannot see

  394. and bend their backs

  395. forever.

  396. So,

  397. given all of these

  398. connections,

  399. it's not surprising

  400. to see Peter

  401. making a connection

  402. between David

  403. and the life

  404. and ministry

  405. of Jesus

  406. in Psalm 69.

  407. So he quotes

  408. Psalm 69,

    Psalms 69:25

  409. verse 25,

  410. and quotes it here

  411. in Acts 1, 20.

  412. For it is written

  413. in the book of Psalms,

  414. may his camp

  415. become desolate

  416. and let there be

  417. no one to dwell in it.

  418. The camp

  419. is a reference

  420. to the plot of land

  421. that was purchased

  422. by Judas

  423. or purchased

  424. using the money

  425. that Judas had

  426. from betraying Jesus.

  427. And this was the prophecy

  428. that was fulfilled

  429. when after Judas' death,

  430. the plot of land

  431. was used

  432. as a burying ground,

  433. unclean cemetery.

  434. So it became

  435. a desolate place

  436. and no one

  437. would dwell in it.

  438. And using that same method,

  439. Peter also applies

  440. Psalm 109, verse 8

    Psalms 109:8

  441. to what happened

  442. to Jesus.

  443. Psalm 109

  444. is also a Davidic psalm.

  445. There he describes

  446. his enemies

  447. who in return

  448. for his love

  449. accuse him

  450. and reward him

  451. evil for good

  452. and hatred

  453. for his love.

  454. And then,

  455. very interestingly

  456. in the psalm,

  457. after describing

  458. his enemies

  459. in the plural,

  460. all of a sudden

  461. he takes a turn

  462. and starts describing

  463. this singular enemy

  464. as if he has

  465. a particular individual

  466. in mind.

  467. And he says,

  468. may his days

  469. be few.

  470. May another

  471. take his office.

  472. So Peter

  473. takes that unusual

  474. turn in the Psalm 109

  475. and interprets it

  476. as a specific prophecy

  477. concerning Judas

  478. who,

  479. like the enemies

  480. who opposed King David,

  481. opposed King Jesus.

  482. In particular,

  483. Judas

  484. who would betray him.

  485. and using this

  486. as his basis,

  487. he argues that

  488. the scripture

  489. had to be fulfilled

  490. and the office

  491. of apostle

  492. now must be filled.

  493. Someone must

  494. take his office.

  495. Verses 18 to 19

  496. are placed inside

  497. a parenthesis

  498. because the translators

  499. concluded that

  500. that's a narrator's

  501. commentary,

  502. Luke's commentary,

  503. rather than part

  504. of Peter's speech.

  505. In,

  506. if we're honest,

  507. it's actually

  508. impossible to be

  509. certain of that

  510. because ancient Greek

  511. doesn't use quotation marks

  512. and it doesn't use

  513. parentheses

  514. and so

  515. they're just guessing

  516. that this is

  517. Luke's commentary.

  518. It could just as well

  519. be part of Peter's

  520. actual speech.

  521. But regardless,

  522. what it tells us

  523. is important,

  524. verses 18 to 9,

  525. it says,

  526. Now this man

  527. acquired a field

  528. with the reward

  529. of his wickedness

  530. and falling headlong

  531. he burst open

  532. in the middle

  533. and all his bowels

  534. gushed out

  535. and he became known

  536. to all the inhabitants

  537. of Jerusalem

  538. so that the field

  539. was called

  540. in their own language

  541. that is filled

  542. of blood.

  543. The fuller account

  544. in Matthew chapter 27

    Matthew 27 chapter mention

  545. provides more details.

  546. It says that

  547. when Judas,

  548. his betrayer,

  549. saw that Jesus

  550. was condemned,

  551. he changed his mind

  552. and brought back

  553. the 30 pieces of silver

  554. to the chief priests

  555. and the elders

  556. saying,

  557. I have sinned

  558. by betraying

  559. innocent blood.

  560. They said,

  561. What is that to us?

  562. See to it yourself.

  563. And throwing down

  564. the pieces of silver

  565. into the temple,

  566. Judas disparted

  567. and he went

  568. and hanged himself.

  569. But the chief priests

  570. taking the pieces

  571. of silver

  572. said,

  573. It is not lawful

  574. to put them

  575. into the treasury

  576. since it is blood money.

  577. It's ironic

  578. that people

  579. who killed Jesus

  580. are now not wanting

  581. money that's been

  582. tainted with blood.

  583. So they took counsel

  584. and bought with them

  585. the potter's field

  586. as a burial place

  587. for strangers.

  588. Therefore,

  589. that field

  590. has been called

  591. a field of blood

  592. to this day.

  593. So Matthew and Luke's

  594. seemingly divergent

  595. accounts of Judas' death

  596. have raised some questions.

  597. Did Judas die

  598. by hanging,

  599. as Matthew says,

  600. or did he die

  601. by falling headlong

  602. and bursting open

  603. in the middle

  604. and all his bowels

  605. gushing out,

  606. as Luke says?

  607. Did Judas buy the field

  608. or did the chief priests

  609. buy the field?

  610. The most likely scenario

  611. appears to be

  612. that Judas hanged himself

  613. and that as the body

  614. was decomposing

  615. the branch

  616. that it was hanging from

  617. or whatever it was,

  618. that something snapped

  619. and fell

  620. and the body

  621. dropped onto the ground

  622. and as it hit the ground

  623. it burst open

  624. so that his entrails

  625. spilled out.

  626. That would make sense

  627. because a normal body

  628. when it falls to the ground

  629. wouldn't burst like that.

  630. Only a decomposing body

  631. would do that.

  632. And so then Matthew

  633. is describing

  634. how Judas died

  635. and Luke is describing

  636. the gruesome aftermath

  637. to show the severe consequence

  638. of the one who betrayed

  639. the innocent,

  640. righteous,

  641. Son of God.

  642. And then since

  643. the high priest

  644. could not take back

  645. Judas' money

  646. because it was considered

  647. blood money,

  648. they used it

  649. to buy a field

  650. in Judas' stead

  651. because they can't actually

  652. accept it into the treasury

  653. as his executor of sorts

  654. with Judas' money.

  655. So then a ritually unclean cemetery

  656. is purchased

  657. with ritually unclean money

  658. so that it's appropriate

  659. both to say

  660. that Judas bought the field

  661. and the high priests

  662. bought the field

  663. and that field

  664. came to be known

  665. as a keldama,

  666. a field of blood

  667. because it's not really

  668. what this passage is about

  669. but because of its association

  670. with Judas Iscariot,

  671. it's been taught

  672. among some Christian circles

  673. that suicide

  674. is an unforgivable sin.

  675. It is a terrible sin.

  676. It's an attack on God

  677. who is the author of life.

  678. It's a brazen act

  679. of trying to take one's life

  680. into one's own hands

  681. but with all of that said,

  682. the Bible never describes

  683. suicide as an unforgivable sin.

  684. Judas Iscariot's case

  685. is unique.

  686. Prophesying of his betrayal,

  687. Jesus said in Matthew 26, 24,

  688. woe to that man

  689. by whom the Son of Man

  690. is betrayed.

  691. It would have been better

  692. for that man

  693. if he had not been born.

  694. So Judas is condemned.

  695. He perishes.

  696. His situation is irredeemable

  697. and there was no true repentance

  698. from him, only remorse.

  699. But Luke is not commenting here

  700. on the theological implications

  701. of suicide as such.

  702. He's simply interested

  703. in the fact that

  704. the scriptures were fulfilled

  705. in Judas' betrayal and death.

  706. Judas' camp became desolate.

  707. Judas' life was cut short.

  708. The plot of land he purchased

  709. became a field of blood

  710. and now all that remained

  711. to be fulfilled

  712. is that prophecy

  713. of another taking his office.

  714. So this is Peter's rationale

  715. for the necessity

  716. of the 12th apostle

  717. appointing the 12th apostle.

  718. Then in verses 21 to 26,

  719. we see the actual selection process.

  720. It says in verses 21 to 22,

  721. so one of the men

  722. who have accompanied us

  723. during all the time

  724. that the Lord Jesus

  725. went in and out among us,

  726. beginning from the baptism of John

  727. until the day

  728. when he was taken up from us,

  729. one of these men

  730. must become with us

  731. a witness to his resurrection.

  732. These verses outline

  733. specifically the criteria

  734. that need to be met

  735. for inclusion

  736. among the 12 apostles.

  737. First, Judas' replacement

  738. had to be a man

  739. who had been among

  740. Jesus' disciples

  741. during his earthly ministry.

  742. We know from Luke 6, 13

  743. that in addition

  744. to the 12 apostles,

  745. Jesus had a number

  746. of other disciples

  747. that a larger group

  748. that followed him.

  749. Second criterion is this.

  750. The candidates for the 12th spot

  751. had to have been a witness

  752. of Jesus' physical resurrection.

  753. He had to have seen

  754. the risen Christ.

  755. These are the criteria

  756. of the apostolic office.

  757. I'm going to digress here

  758. for a few minutes

  759. just to explain

  760. the term apostle

  761. and the way it's used

  762. variously throughout Scripture

  763. for the sake of clarity.

  764. In the same way

  765. that the word president

  766. has the underlying meaning

  767. of leader or executive

  768. in modern usage,

  769. but it can still be used

  770. variously in different contexts.

  771. It could refer to

  772. the president of our country.

  773. It could refer to

  774. the president of a college.

  775. It could refer to

  776. the president of the local

  777. Boys and Girls Club.

  778. Right?

  779. But they're all presidents.

  780. In a similar way,

  781. the word apostle

  782. has the common underlying meaning

  783. of being someone

  784. who has been commissioned,

  785. sent out,

  786. a missionary.

  787. But the word apostle

  788. is still used

  789. throughout Scripture

  790. in different ways.

  791. So we need to pay

  792. close attention

  793. to the context

  794. to see what kind of apostle

  795. it's speaking of.

  796. The first way it is used

  797. is to refer to

  798. the twelve apostles.

  799. They are the ones

  800. from Jesus

  801. personally appointed

  802. in Luke 22

  803. as 1830,

  804. which I read to you earlier,

  805. 28 to 30 rather,

  806. that I read to you earlier,

  807. to sit on thrones

  808. judging the twelve tribes

  809. of Israel.

  810. They're the ones

  811. described in Revelation 21

    Revelation 21:14

  812. verse 14

  813. as the twelve foundations

  814. of the new Jerusalem.

  815. There's only twelve

  816. of these kinds of apostles

  817. in all of human history.

  818. And they are Simon,

  819. known as Peter,

  820. Andrew, his brother,

  821. James and John,

  822. sons of Zebedee,

  823. Philip, Bartholomew,

  824. Matthew, Thomas,

  825. James, the son of Alphaeus,

  826. Simon, the zealot,

  827. and Judas,

  828. the son of James,

  829. and finally,

  830. as we see in our text,

  831. Matthias,

  832. who replaces

  833. Judas Iscariot.

  834. That's it.

  835. That's the twelve.

  836. No one else

  837. can ever be added

  838. to that list.

  839. That's why

  840. once Judas Iscariot,

  841. the traitor is replaced.

  842. The list is fixed

  843. and never changed.

  844. Even after James,

  845. one of the twelve,

  846. is killed

  847. in Acts chapter 12

    Acts 12:1–2

  848. verses 1 to 2,

  849. there is no mention

  850. ever of replacing him

  851. because that list is done.

  852. It's complete.

  853. It's fixed.

  854. The second way

  855. the word apostle

  856. is used

  857. is what I call

  858. capital A apostles.

  859. These are people

  860. who occupy

  861. the first century

  862. office of apostle.

  863. They meet

  864. the apostolic criteria

  865. of having

  866. accompanied Jesus

  867. in his earthly ministry

  868. and having witnessed

  869. Jesus' resurrection.

  870. These are the

  871. capital A apostles

  872. who have been

  873. commissioned

  874. by the risen Christ

  875. as eyewitnesses

  876. of his resurrection.

  877. They're the ones

  878. that are described

  879. in Ephesians 2.20

  880. along with the twelve

  881. as the foundation

  882. of the church.

  883. We know that

  884. this additional category

  885. of the apostolic office

  886. exists because

  887. in 1 Corinthians

    1 Corinthians 15:5–8

  888. chapter 15

  889. verses 5 to 8

  890. it talks about

  891. how Jesus

  892. after his resurrection

  893. appeared to all

  894. the apostles

  895. I mean

  896. appeared to the twelve

  897. and then

  898. distinctly

  899. later on

  900. it says

  901. he appeared

  902. later to

  903. all the apostles

  904. so it distinguishes

  905. clearly the twelve

  906. from the rest

  907. of the apostles

  908. all the apostles

  909. so this second

  910. category is the

  911. category that Paul

  912. includes himself in

  913. and but because

  914. Paul himself

  915. wasn't

  916. a disciple of Jesus

  917. during his earthly

  918. ministry

  919. and because he

  920. didn't see

  921. the risen Christ

  922. in the flesh

  923. but only saw

  924. the vision

  925. of the risen Christ

  926. after his ascension

  927. that's why

  928. Peter

  929. I mean Paul

  930. is very apologetic

  931. about his

  932. apostleship

  933. and he says

  934. in 1 Corinthians

  935. 15

  936. 8

  937. he describes

  938. himself

  939. as an

  940. untimely

  941. born

  942. apostle

  943. he knew

  944. that he was

  945. a capital

  946. A apostle

  947. but he knew

  948. that he was

  949. an exception

  950. not the rule

  951. so the

  952. office

  953. of apostle

  954. the second

  955. category

  956. also no longer

  957. exists

  958. an office

  959. is an

  960. officially

  961. recognized

  962. and authorized

  963. position

  964. a trust

  965. a responsibility

  966. within the

  967. community

  968. and the

  969. function of

  970. the apostolate

  971. is already

  972. complete

  973. because

  974. they have

  975. borne witness

  976. to Jesus'

  977. resurrection

  978. and the

  979. foundation

  980. of the

  981. church

  982. has already

  983. been laid

  984. and because

  985. there are

  986. no more

  987. eyewitnesses

  988. of Jesus'

  989. resurrection

  990. so that

  991. office

  992. has been

  993. fulfilled

  994. it's

  995. complete

  996. this is

  997. why

  998. when the

  999. offices

  1000. of the

  1001. church

  1002. are

  1003. mentioned

  1004. in the

  1005. rest

  1006. of the

  1007. New

  1008. Testament

  1009. there are

  1010. only two

  1011. offices

  1012. that are

  1013. mentioned

  1014. Philippians 1

  1015. 1

  1016. 1

  1017. Timothy 3

  1018. Titus 1

  1019. there is

  1020. no mention

  1021. of the

  1022. office

  1023. of

  1024. apostles

  1025. there is

  1026. no mention

  1027. of any

  1028. other

  1029. office

  1030. for that

  1031. matter

  1032. only two

  1033. are

  1034. mentioned

  1035. the

  1036. office

  1037. of

  1038. elder

  1039. and

  1040. the

  1041. office

  1042. of

  1043. deacon

  1044. but there's

  1045. still a third

  1046. way that the

  1047. word apostle

  1048. is used

  1049. in scripture

  1050. and this is

  1051. what I call

  1052. lowercase

  1053. a

  1054. apostles

  1055. these do

  1056. not occupy

  1057. the first

  1058. century

  1059. office

  1060. of

  1061. apostles

  1062. but they

  1063. possess

  1064. the gift

  1065. of

  1066. apostleship

  1067. which is

  1068. mentioned

  1069. in Ephesians

    Ephesians 4:11–12

  1070. chapter 4

  1071. verses 11

  1072. to 12

  1073. it says

  1074. that God

  1075. gives

  1076. gifts

  1077. these are

  1078. not

  1079. offices

  1080. but they're

  1081. gifts

  1082. God gives

  1083. gifts

  1084. of

  1085. apostles

  1086. prophets

  1087. evangelists

  1088. shepherds

  1089. and teachers

  1090. to equip

  1091. the saints

  1092. for the

  1093. work of

  1094. ministry

  1095. for building

  1096. up the

  1097. body

  1098. of Christ

  1099. these are

  1100. five

  1101. essential

  1102. ministries

  1103. for the

  1104. building

  1105. up of

  1106. the

  1107. church

  1108. today

  1109. and

  1110. apostles

  1111. are

  1112. one

  1113. of

  1114. them

  1115. so I

  1116. would

  1117. put

  1118. modern

  1119. day

  1120. frontier

  1121. missionaries

  1122. who are

  1123. sent out

  1124. to preach

  1125. the gospel

  1126. to bear witness

  1127. to Jesus

  1128. in new

  1129. places

  1130. I would

  1131. place them

  1132. in that

  1133. category

  1134. of having

  1135. the gift

  1136. of

  1137. apostles

  1138. Barnabas

  1139. and

  1140. Apollos

  1141. were such

  1142. people

  1143. they are

  1144. described

  1145. as apostles

  1146. in the

  1147. New Testament

  1148. and yet

  1149. they are

  1150. unlikely

  1151. to have

  1152. been

  1153. witnesses

  1154. to Jesus

  1155. resurrection

  1156. for

  1157. example

  1158. Apollos

  1159. is

  1160. described

  1161. in

  1162. Acts

  1163. 18

  1164. 24

  1165. to 26

  1166. as

  1167. knowing

  1168. only

  1169. the

  1170. baptism

  1171. of

  1172. John

  1173. until

  1174. he

  1175. is

  1176. instructed

  1177. further

  1178. by

  1179. Priscilla

  1180. and Aquila

  1181. and then

  1182. he was

  1183. definitely

  1184. not

  1185. so that

  1186. means

  1187. he was

  1188. definitely

  1189. not

  1190. directly

  1191. appointed

  1192. and

  1193. commissioned

  1194. by the

  1195. risen

  1196. Christ

  1197. and yet

  1198. he is

  1199. called

  1200. an

  1201. apostle

  1202. in

  1203. 1 Corinthians

    1 Corinthians 4:6–9

  1204. chapter 4

  1205. verses 6

  1206. to 9

  1207. similarly

  1208. Barnabas

  1209. is called

  1210. a prophet

  1211. and a teacher

  1212. of the church

  1213. at Antioch

  1214. in Acts

    Acts 13:1

  1215. 13

  1216. verse 1

  1217. but only

  1218. after he

  1219. is sent

  1220. out

  1221. later

  1222. in that

  1223. same

  1224. chapter

  1225. as a

  1226. missionary

  1227. he begins

  1228. to be

  1229. called

  1230. an apostle

  1231. in Acts

    Acts 14 chapter mention

  1232. chapter 14

  1233. so this

  1234. is the

  1235. third

  1236. category

  1237. of

  1238. apostles

  1239. that

  1240. now

  1241. continues

  1242. today

  1243. that's

  1244. the gift

  1245. and it

  1246. describes

  1247. the

  1248. function

  1249. rather than

  1250. an office

  1251. all that

  1252. to say

  1253. scripture

  1254. itself

  1255. gives

  1256. evidence

  1257. of

  1258. three

  1259. different

  1260. tiers

  1261. of

  1262. apostles

  1263. and

  1264. what

  1265. we're

  1266. dealing

  1267. with

  1268. here

  1269. in

  1270. Acts

    Acts 1 chapter mention

  1271. chapter 1

  1272. is

  1273. the

  1274. highest

  1275. level

  1276. the

  1277. twelve

  1278. those

  1279. who

  1280. will

  1281. sit

  1282. on

  1283. throne

  1284. to

  1285. judge

  1286. the

  1287. twelve

  1288. tribes

  1289. of

  1290. Israel

  1291. and

  1292. Luke

  1293. continues

  1294. his

  1295. description

  1296. of

  1297. the

  1298. selection

  1299. of

  1300. the

  1301. twelfth

  1302. apostle

  1303. in

  1304. verses

  1305. 23

  1306. to

  1307. 26

  1308. and

  1309. they

  1310. put

  1311. forward

  1312. to

  1313. Joseph

  1314. called

  1315. Barsabbas

  1316. who was

  1317. also

  1318. called

  1319. Justice

  1320. and

  1321. Matthias

  1322. and

  1323. they

  1324. prayed

  1325. and

  1326. said

  1327. you

  1328. lord

  1329. who

  1330. know

  1331. the

  1332. hearts

  1333. of

  1334. all

  1335. show

  1336. which

  1337. one

  1338. of

  1339. these

  1340. two

  1341. you

  1342. have

  1343. chosen

  1344. to

  1345. take

  1346. the

  1347. place

  1348. in

  1349. this

  1350. ministry

  1351. and

  1352. apostleship

  1353. from which

  1354. Judas

  1355. turned

  1356. assigned

  1357. to

  1358. go

  1359. to

  1360. his

  1361. own

  1362. place

  1363. and

  1364. they

  1365. cast

  1366. lots

  1367. for

  1368. them

  1369. and

  1370. the

  1371. lot

  1372. fell

  1373. on

  1374. Matthias

  1375. and

  1376. he

  1377. was

  1378. numbered

  1379. with

  1380. the

  1381. eleven

  1382. apostles

  1383. so

  1384. this

  1385. passage

  1386. is

  1387. not

  1388. a

  1389. manual

  1390. for

  1391. how

  1392. to

  1393. select

  1394. church

  1395. leaders

  1396. because

  1397. it's

  1398. about

  1399. the

  1400. selection

  1401. of

  1402. the

  1403. twelfth

  1404. apostle

  1405. which

  1406. is

  1407. unique

  1408. we

  1409. never

  1410. have

  1411. to

  1412. do

  1413. this

  1414. again

  1415. it's

  1416. nonetheless

  1417. instructive

  1418. for us

  1419. we

  1420. can

  1421. use

  1422. it

  1423. tells

  1424. us

  1425. our

  1426. common

  1427. sense

  1428. and

  1429. rule

  1430. out

  1431. people

  1432. who

  1433. are

  1434. not

  1435. qualified

  1436. the

  1437. apostles

  1438. and

  1439. the

  1440. rest

  1441. of

  1442. the

  1443. early

  1444. disciples

  1445. put

  1446. forward

  1447. only

  1448. two

  1449. they

  1450. don't

  1451. put

  1452. all

  1453. the

  1454. names

  1455. in

  1456. the

  1457. lot

  1458. they

  1459. put

  1460. two

  1461. people

  1462. in

  1463. the

  1464. lot

  1465. right

  1466. and

  1467. Joseph

  1468. called

  1469. Barsabbas

  1470. who was

  1471. also

  1472. called

  1473. Justice

  1474. and

  1475. Matthias

  1476. these

  1477. two

  1478. men

  1479. were

  1480. in

  1481. their

  1482. estimation

  1483. already

  1484. qualified

  1485. they

  1486. met

  1487. all

  1488. the

  1489. criteria

  1490. for

  1491. apostleship

  1492. and

  1493. then

  1494. they

  1495. prayed

  1496. you

  1497. Lord

  1498. know

  1499. the

  1500. hearts

  1501. of

  1502. all

  1503. show

  1504. which

  1505. one

  1506. of

  1507. these

  1508. two

  1509. you

  1510. have

  1511. chosen

  1512. to

  1513. take

  1514. the

  1515. place

  1516. in

  1517. this

  1518. ministry

  1519. and

  1520. apostleship

  1521. they

  1522. pray

  1523. that

  1524. God

  1525. would

  1526. reveal

  1527. whom

  1528. he

  1529. has

  1530. chosen

  1531. just

  1532. as

  1533. Jesus

  1534. chose

  1535. the

  1536. original

  1537. twelve

  1538. apostles

  1539. as we

  1540. saw

  1541. in

  1542. Acts

  1543. 1

  1544. 2

  1545. so

  1546. he

  1547. must

  1548. now

  1549. complete

  1550. the

  1551. twelve

  1552. by

  1553. appointing

  1554. Judas

  1555. his

  1556. replacement

  1557. the

  1558. word

  1559. Lord

  1560. is

  1561. most

  1562. likely

  1563. referenced

  1564. to

  1565. the

  1566. Lord

  1567. Jesus

  1568. already

  1569. mentioned

  1570. in

  1571. verse

  1572. 21

  1573. and

  1574. so

  1575. to

  1576. dispel

  1577. all

  1578. suspicion

  1579. of

  1580. human

  1581. meddling

  1582. they

  1583. cast

  1584. lots

  1585. that's

  1586. because

  1587. these

  1588. men

  1589. knew

  1590. their

  1591. Old

  1592. Testament

  1593. scriptures

  1594. Proverbs

    Proverbs 16:33

  1595. 16

  1596. verse

  1597. 33

  1598. says

  1599. the

  1600. lot

  1601. is

  1602. cast

  1603. into

  1604. the

  1605. lap

  1606. but

  1607. its

  1608. every

  1609. decision

  1610. is

  1611. from

  1612. the

  1613. Lord

  1614. even

  1615. something

  1616. that

  1617. seems

  1618. completely

  1619. out of

  1620. control

  1621. like

  1622. a

  1623. lot

  1624. is

  1625. under

  1626. God's

  1627. sovereign

  1628. superintendence

  1629. it's

  1630. ultimately

  1631. decided

  1632. by

  1633. the

  1634. Lord

  1635. and

  1636. Proverbs

  1637. 18

  1638. 18

  1639. says

  1640. the

  1641. lot

  1642. puts

  1643. an

  1644. end

  1645. to

  1646. quarrels

  1647. and

  1648. decides

  1649. between

  1650. powerful

  1651. contenders

  1652. in

  1653. some

  1654. situations

  1655. when

  1656. there

  1657. is

  1658. a

  1659. stalemate

  1660. in

  1661. a

  1662. conflict

  1663. or

  1664. a

  1665. debate

  1666. or

  1667. when

  1668. you're

  1669. faced

  1670. with

  1671. a

  1672. decision

  1673. among

  1674. I guess

  1675. between

  1676. two

  1677. equally

  1678. good

  1679. options

  1680. a

  1681. lot

  1682. can

  1683. end

  1684. the

  1685. debate

  1686. because

  1687. it's

  1688. considered

  1689. seen

  1690. as

  1691. impartial

  1692. some

  1693. Bible

  1694. scholars

  1695. make

  1696. much

  1697. of

  1698. the

  1699. fact

  1700. that

  1701. this

  1702. is

  1703. the

  1704. last

  1705. instance

  1706. in

  1707. scripture

  1708. where

  1709. the

  1710. casting

  1711. of

  1712. lots

  1713. happen

  1714. to

  1715. make

  1716. a

  1717. decision

  1718. they

  1719. note

  1720. that

  1721. after

  1722. Pentecost

  1723. when

  1724. the

  1725. spirit

  1726. of

  1727. God

  1728. comes

  1729. in

  1730. his

  1731. fullness

  1732. upon

  1733. God's

  1734. people

  1735. that

  1736. there's

  1737. no

  1738. more

  1739. mention

  1740. of

  1741. casting

  1742. lots

  1743. it's

  1744. especially

  1745. interesting

  1746. that

  1747. in

  1748. Acts

    Acts 6 chapter mention

  1749. chapter

  1750. 6

  1751. when

  1752. the

  1753. apostles

  1754. appoint

  1755. the

  1756. seven

  1757. who

  1758. will

  1759. assist

  1760. them

  1761. in

  1762. the

  1763. administration

  1764. of

  1765. food

  1766. for

  1767. the

  1768. Greek

  1769. widows

  1770. that

  1771. they

  1772. don't

  1773. cast

  1774. lots

  1775. in

  1776. that

  1777. situation

  1778. with

  1779. all of

  1780. that

  1781. said

  1782. however

  1783. because

  1784. Luke

  1785. himself

  1786. never

  1787. tells

  1788. us

  1789. that

  1790. we

  1791. no

  1792. longer

  1793. need

  1794. lots

  1795. because

  1796. we

  1797. have

  1798. the

  1799. Holy

  1800. Spirit

  1801. and

  1802. because

  1803. he

  1804. doesn't

  1805. seem

  1806. to

  1807. paint

  1808. the

  1809. selection

  1810. of

  1811. Matthias

  1812. by

  1813. lot

  1814. as

  1815. or

  1816. embarrassing

  1817. I

  1818. think

  1819. this

  1820. is

  1821. at

  1822. best

  1823. a

  1824. suggestive

  1825. but

  1826. inconclusive

  1827. inference

  1828. from

  1829. the

  1830. text

  1831. the

  1832. fact

  1833. that

  1834. we

  1835. now

  1836. have

  1837. the

  1838. Holy

  1839. Spirit

  1840. in

  1841. fullness

  1842. does

  1843. not

  1844. mean

  1845. that

  1846. believers

  1847. never

  1848. disagree

  1849. anymore

  1850. as

  1851. we

  1852. see

  1853. in

  1854. the

  1855. disagreement

  1856. and

  1857. split

  1858. between

  1859. Paul

  1860. and

  1861. Barnabas

  1862. later

  1863. in

  1864. Acts

  1865. 15

  1866. nor

  1867. does

  1868. it

  1869. mean

  1870. that

  1871. decision

  1872. making

  1873. is

  1874. now

  1875. easy

  1876. and

  1877. fail

  1878. safe

  1879. because

  1880. we

  1881. have

  1882. the

  1883. Holy

  1884. Spirit

  1885. when

  1886. faced

  1887. with

  1888. a

  1889. consequential

  1890. decision

  1891. that

  1892. can

  1893. be

  1894. contentious

  1895. some

  1896. impartial

  1897. means

  1898. of

  1899. deciding

  1900. could

  1901. be

  1902. an

  1903. effective

  1904. means

  1905. of

  1906. ruling

  1907. out

  1908. controversy

  1909. of

  1910. course

  1911. after

  1912. taking

  1913. the

  1914. necessary

  1915. steps

  1916. of

  1917. eliminating

  1918. bad

  1919. options

  1920. and

  1921. spending

  1922. much

  1923. time

  1924. in

  1925. prayer

  1926. to

  1927. God

  1928. seeking

  1929. his

  1930. guidance

  1931. but

  1932. as I

  1933. said

  1934. before

  1935. Luke's

  1936. not

  1937. trying

  1938. to

  1939. teach

  1940. us

  1941. how

  1942. churches

  1943. should

  1944. make

  1945. decisions

  1946. here

  1947. he's

  1948. primarily

  1949. concerned

  1950. with

  1951. demonstrating

  1952. that

  1953. the

  1954. choice

  1955. of

  1956. Matthias

  1957. as

  1958. the

  1959. 12th

  1960. apostle

  1961. was

  1962. not

  1963. made

  1964. by

  1965. men

  1966. but

  1967. made

  1968. by

  1969. God

  1970. the

  1971. 12

  1972. are

  1973. divinely

  1974. appointed

  1975. for

  1976. their

  1977. unique

  1978. foundational

  1979. role

  1980. in the

  1981. church

  1982. and

  1983. here's

  1984. why

  1985. this

  1986. is

  1987. important

  1988. and

  1989. I

  1990. apologize

  1991. so much

  1992. of

  1993. what I've

  1994. talked

  1995. about

  1996. so far

  1997. have

  1998. seemed

  1999. technical

  2000. like

  2001. teaching

  2002. and

  2003. not

  2004. preaching

  2005. here's

  2006. why

  2007. this

  2008. is

  2009. important

  2010. these

  2011. 12

  2012. apostles

  2013. are

  2014. leaders

  2015. of

  2016. the

  2017. reconstituted

  2018. people

  2019. of

  2020. God

  2021. the

  2022. Old

  2023. Testament

  2024. people

  2025. of

  2026. God

  2027. came

  2028. from

  2029. the

  2030. 12

  2031. sons

  2032. of

  2033. Jacob

  2034. and

  2035. the

  2036. New

  2037. Testament

  2038. people

  2039. of

  2040. God

  2041. the

  2042. church

  2043. descend

  2044. from

  2045. these

  2046. 12

  2047. apostles

  2048. of

  2049. Jesus

  2050. Christ

  2051. this

  2052. reality

  2053. hides

  2054. both

  2055. the

  2056. continuity

  2057. with

  2058. the

  2059. Old

  2060. Testament

  2061. and

  2062. discontinuity

  2063. from

  2064. the

  2065. Old

  2066. Testament

  2067. on the

  2068. one hand

  2069. if you

  2070. want to

  2071. know

  2072. God

  2073. if you

  2074. want to

  2075. be

  2076. saved

  2077. you

  2078. no

  2079. longer

  2080. need

  2081. to

  2082. become

  2083. a

  2084. Jew

  2085. you

  2086. now

  2087. need

  2088. to

  2089. become

  2090. a

  2091. Christian

  2092. a

  2093. follower

  2094. of

  2095. Christ

  2096. and

  2097. devote

  2098. yourself

  2099. not to

  2100. the

  2140. historian

2141. and Eusebius, all 12 apostles except for John were martyred for bearing witness to Jesus.

2142. Christianity is not a matter of cultural or personal preference. It's either true or it's not.

2143. Peter bore witness to Jesus from Jerusalem all the way to modern-day Turkey

2144. and then was crucified by Emperor Nero after bearing witness in Rome.

2145. James bore witness to Christ throughout Judea and was killed by King Herod Agrippa I, as noted in Acts chapter 12.

    Acts 12 chapter mention

2146. John bore witness to Jesus throughout Asia until he was exiled into the island of Patmos

2147. under the persecutions of Emperor Domitian. He was the only one of the twelve to die by natural causes.

2148. Andrew bore witness to Jesus as far as modern-day Ukraine, southern Russia, and Kazakhstan.

2149. And then he was crucified in Patras, Greece.

2150. Bartholomew bore witness to Jesus as far as modern-day India, Armenia, where he was flayed to death for his faith.

2151. James, the son of Alphaeus, bore witness to Jesus as far as Egypt, where he was crucified for his faith.

2152. Judas, the son of James, also known as Jude or Thaddeus, bore witness to Jesus in Iran, Syria, and Lebanon,

2153. where he was beheaded for his faith.

2154. Matthew bore witness to Jesus as far as modern-day Sudan.

2155. And church tradition holds that he too was martyred.

2156. Philip bore witness to Jesus as far as modern-day Greece, Syria, and Turkey,

2157. where he was beheaded for his faith.

2158. Simon, the zealot, bore witness to Jesus as far as Mauritania, Libya, and Britain,

  2159. where he was crucified.

2160. Thomas bore witness to Jesus as far as India, where he too was martyred.

2161. And Matthias, finally the last apostle to be appointed to replace Judas Iscariot,

2162. bore witness to Jesus in modern-day Azerbaijan, Armenia, and Georgia,

2163. where he was stoned to death.

  2164. These are real people.

  2165. And we, as Bible-believing, gospel-proclaiming Christians,

2166. stand in as heirs of these 12 apostles.

2167. There are no more 12 apostles.

2168. There are no more apostles who are eyewitnesses Jesus' death and resurrection.

2169. So then, any so-called Christian church or denomination that claims to have new apostles

2170. who can modify the church's apostolic teaching is a cult, not the true church.

2171. We are not inventing new doctrines.

2172. We're not in the business of customizing or updating Christianity

2173. to fit our personal or cultural preferences.

2174. We stand in the line of this venerable tradition,

2175. and we're not at liberty to change it to our liking.

2176. That's what this passage teaches us.

2177. And this is why, later in Acts chapter 2, verse 42,

    Acts 2:42

2178. it says that the early Christians devoted themselves

  2179. to the apostles' teaching.

2180. Not to any itinerant philosopher's teaching.

  2181. Not to any so-called Christian's teaching.

2182. Not to the teachings of those who have the highest platforms

  2183. and the loudest microphones.

2184. But to the apostles' teaching.

  2185. Likewise, Jude chapter 3,

2186. Jude verse 3, rather, because it only is one chapter,

  2187. it says,

2188. The word delivered is a technical word that conveys

2189. an official transmission of apostolic teaching

2190. from one generation to another.

2191. Luke uses that same word in Luke chapter 1, verse 2,

    Luke 1:2

2192. to say that he is writing an orderly account

2193. of what those who from the beginning

2194. were eyewitnesses and ministers of the word

2195. have delivered to him and others.

2196. The Christian faith, the gospel of Jesus Christ,

2197. is not something that some self-proclaimed,

2198. self-help guru conjured up in his own mind.

2199. It's not something that some mystic dreamed up

2200. in the middle of some psychedelic ecstasy.

2201. It's based on historical realities.

  2202. What really happened.

  2203. Jesus' life.

  2204. Jesus' death.

  2205. Jesus' resurrection.

  2206. Jesus' ascension.

2207. It's based on what Jesus himself entrusted

  2208. to these 12 apostles

2209. to faithfully hand down to future generations.

2210. This is why the church is often described

2211. as one holy, universal, apostolic church.

  2212. In other words,

2213. this is not a game of telephone

  2214. where people line up,

2215. one person conveys a message to the next person.

2216. It gets distorted at every level.

2217. And then at the end of the line,

  2218. the person says something

  2219. that's completely different

  2220. from the original message

2221. to abroarious laughter of the crowd

  2222. that's having a good time.

2223. And in that game, of course,

2224. the more distorted it is,

  2225. the funnier it is.

2226. But when it comes to the apostolic gospel,

  2227. that cannot happen.

2228. Because it's a matter of life and death.

2229. And when that message is distorted,

2230. it does grave, eternal, spiritual damage.

2231. That's the sacred trust God's given to us

  2232. as his people,

2233. as the church that's founded

  2234. on these apostles' teachings.

2235. Do you believe what these apostles believed?

  2236. Do you devote yourself

  2237. to these apostles' teachings?

2238. Do you search the scriptures

  2239. that they wrote

2240. with the inspiration of the Holy Spirit?

2241. Do you search the scriptures

2242. to devote yourself to it?

  2243. What does God say?

2244. What is the apostolic deposit?

2245. Do you believe what the apostles say

  2246. about Christ's life, death,

  2247. and resurrection and ascension?

  2248. Some people say,

  2249. nowadays, that's just...

  2250. Disciples, the apostles,

2251. Jesus resurrected in people's hearts.

  2252. Jesus was raised again

  2253. in people's hearts.

2254. He lives on in their memory.

2255. The apostles didn't believe that.

2256. They believed that he was raised

  2257. from the dead.

2258. Are you a faithful steward,

  2259. a guardian,

  2260. of the apostolic deposit

2261. that's been handed down to you

  2262. from generation after generation?

2263. Do we are not one of the twelve apostles?

  2264. We nevertheless continue

2265. the ministry of the apostles.

2266. And what was their ministry,

  2267. says in verse 22,

  2268. to be witnesses

  2269. to Christ's resurrection.

  2270. And of course,

  2271. resurrection assumes

  2272. and entails his death.

2273. That Jesus died on the cross

  2274. to bear the punishment

2275. that we deserve as sinners

2276. so that we might be forgiven,

2277. so that we might be cleansed,

2278. and that Jesus was raised

2279. from the dead on the third day,

  2280. defeating death,

2281. to free us from our slavery to sin,

2282. to grant us eternal resurrection life,

2283. so that we who entrust ourselves to him

2284. might be citizens of the kingdom of God

  2285. where Christ reigns.

2286. That was the ministry of the apostles.

2287. That's what they lived and died for.

2288. Is that what you are living for?

2289. Is that what you are willing to die for?

2290. Do you plan your life,

  2291. your calendar,

  2292. your budget,

  2293. your location,

  2294. living situation,

  2295. your occupation,

  2296. your relationships,

2297. you plan all of those things around

2298. being a witness to Jesus

2299. because that is your God-given mission.

  2300. Let's be reminded

2301. this evening, brothers and sisters,

2302. that we have no other message

2303. but this message of Christ crucified

  2304. and Christ resurrected,

2305. and we have no other religion

  2306. but the apostolic gospel.

  2307. Let's pray together.

  2308. O God,

2309. let us not be a generation

  2310. that goes astray

  2311. and misses the message

2312. that has faithfully been guarded

2313. and passed down to us.

  2314. O let us be a generation

2315. that passes on the baton again

  2316. to the next generation.

2317. Let us be a people

  2318. who live

2319. with a crystal clear understanding

  2320. of our mission.

2321. With a crystal clear understanding

  2322. of our identity

  2323. as witnesses

  2324. of Jesus Christ.

  2325. In Jesus' name,

  2326. we pray.

  2327. Amen.

  2328. Amen.

  2329. Thank you.

  2330. Amen.

  2331. Amen.

  2332. Amen.

  2333. Amen.

  2334. Thank you.
