  1. Please turn with me in your Bibles to the book of Acts, chapter 2.

    Acts 2 chapter mention

  2. We just began our sermon series in the book of Acts a couple of weeks ago.

  3. We're in chapter 2 today.

  4. I was a little ambitious, I think, and attempted to cover up to verse 36 today, but that would

  5. have been a really, really long sermon, so I cut it down.

  6. You guys could thank me later.

  7. And I'll try to cover that last part next week as part of next week's passage.

  8. So Acts chapter 2, verses 1 to 21.

    Acts 2:1–21

  9. Let me pray for the reading and preaching of God's Word.

  10. Heavenly Father, we feel keenly our weakness,

  11. our shortcomings,

  12. our weariness.

  13. But Lord, in your Word, we see your Spirit's life and power.

  14. And Lord, we want our lives as your people to be characterized by that spiritual power.

  15. Lord, we hunger for the feeling of your Spirit.

  16. We know that you've given us the Holy Spirit to us, to all of us, to your church, to your people,

  17. as deposit.

  18. We sense His power coursing through us.

  19. And Lord, we want to be filled by Him more and more.

  20. So we ask for your help, Lord.

  21. Meet with us this evening.

  22. Speak to us.

  23. We hang on your every word.

  24. In Jesus' name we pray.

  25. Amen.

  26. Let's read Acts chapter 2, verses 1 to 21.

    Acts 2:1–21

  27. When the day of Pentecost arrived,

  28. they were all together in one place.

  29. And suddenly, there came from heaven a sound like a mighty rushing wind,

  30. and it filled the entire house where they were sitting.

  31. And divided tongues as of fire appeared to them and rested on each one of them.

  32. And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit gave them utterance.

  33. Now, there were dwelling in Jerusalem Jews, devout men from every nation under heaven.

  34. And at this sound, the multitude came together, and they were bewildered,

  35. because each one was hearing them speak in his own language.

  36. And they were amazed and astonished, saying,

  37. Are not all these who are speaking Galileans?

  38. And how is it that we hear each of us in his own native language?

  39. Parthians and Medes and Elamites and residents of Mesopotamia,

  40. Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia,

  41. Phrygia and Pamphylia,

  42. Egypt and the parts of Libya belonging to Cyrene,

  43. and visitors from Rome,

  44. both Jews and proselytes,

  45. Cretans and Arabians.

  46. We hear them telling in our own tongues the mighty works of God.

  47. And all were amazed and perplexed, saying to one another,

  48. What does this mean?

  49. But others, mocking, said,

  50. They are filled with new wine.

  51. But Peter, standing with the eleven,

  52. lifted up his voice and addressed them,

  53. Men of Judea and all who dwell in Jerusalem,

  54. let this be known to you and give ear to my words.

  55. For these people are not drunk, as you suppose,

  56. since it is only the third hour of the day.

  57. But this is what was uttered through the prophet Joel.

  58. And in the last days it shall be, God declares,

  59. that I will pour out my Spirit on all flesh,

  60. and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy,

  61. and your young men shall see visions,

  62. and your old men shall dream dreams.

  63. Even on my male servants and female servants in those days,

  64. I will pour out my Spirit,

  65. and they shall prophesy.

  66. And I will show wonders in the heavens above,

  67. and signs on the earth below,

  68. blood and fire and vapor of smoke.

  69. The sun shall be turned to darkness,

  70. and the moon to blood,

  71. before the day of the Lord comes,

  72. the great and magnificent day.

  73. And it shall come to pass,

  74. that everyone who calls upon the name of the Lord

  75. shall be saved.

  76. This is God's holy and authoritative word.

  77. Many of us in this room have seen

  78. undeniable demonstrations of God's power.

  79. Whether it's supernatural healing,

  80. or a compelling prophecy,

  81. casting out of demons,

  82. or something else.

  83. And all of these are enabled by the Holy Spirit,

  84. who is the third person of the Trinity,

  85. the one who manifests or makes apparent God's presence.

  86. And this passage teaches us that the risen and ascended Lord Jesus Christ

  87. sends the Holy Spirit to indwell God's people,

  88. and empower them to be His witnesses among the nations.

  89. We're going to see first the Spirit,

  90. the Spirit of power,

  91. verses 1 to 13,

  92. and the Spirit of prophecy,

  93. verses 14 to 21.

  94. So let's look at verses 1 to 13 first.

  95. It begins in verse 1.

  96. When the day of Pentecost arrived,

  97. they were all together in one place.

  98. So day is a reference to the 120 disciples mentioned in chapter 1, verse 15,

  99. who were all gathered together in the selection of the 12th apostle.

  100. And this group included the 12 apostles, of course,

  101. but other disciples as well.

  102. And it says it was the day of Pentecost.

  103. Literally, Pentecost means the 50th part.

  104. And it refers to the Feast of Harvest that Exodus 23 talks about.

  105. Because the Feast of Harvest was celebrated 50 days after Passover,

  106. it also came to be known as Pentecost, 50th part.

  107. It's also called the Feast of Weeks in the Old Testament

  108. because it marks a week of weeks,

  109. seven weeks,

  110. seven complete 49 days.

  111. So that culminates with the celebration on the 50th day,

  112. which is the Pentecost.

  113. And it's appropriate that the Holy Spirit fell upon the church at Pentecost

  114. because now the harvest of the saints

  115. begins in earnest

  116. with the power of the Holy Spirit.

  117. And moreover, because after having been delivered from their slavery in Egypt

  118. at the time of the Passover,

  119. Israel arrived at Mount Sinai about on the third month,

  120. it says in Exodus chapter 19.

    Exodus 19 chapter mention

  121. So after a week of weeks.

  122. Because of that,

  123. the festival Pentecost eventually came to be associated

  124. not only with the harvest,

  125. but also with the covenant,

  126. the making of the covenant

  127. and the giving of the law on Mount Sinai

  128. at the time of Moses.

  129. And so this is,

  130. the coming of the Holy Spirit

  131. is a fulfillment of the prophecy in Jeremiah 31, 33,

  132. where it says,

  133. For this is the covenant

  134. that I will make with the house of Israel

  135. after those days,

  136. declares the Lord.

  137. I will put my law within them

  138. and I will write it on their hearts

  139. and I will be their God

  140. and they shall be my people.

  141. So in the same way God made a covenant with Israel

  142. on Mount Sinai and gave his law,

  143. he's making a new covenant with God's people

  144. at Pentecost

  145. and giving not a law on a tablet of stone,

  146. but on the tablet of our hearts.

  147. He's writing,

  148. he's engraving his law by the Spirit.

  149. Verses 2 to 4 describe what happened.

  150. It says,

  151. And suddenly there came from heaven

  152. a sound like a mighty rushing wind

  153. and it filled the entire house

  154. where they were sitting.

  155. And divided tongues as a fire

  156. appeared to them

  157. and rested on each one of them.

  158. And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit

  159. and began to speak in other tongues

  160. as the Spirit gave them utterance.

  161. So Luke notes three things here.

  162. He notes sound, sight, and speech.

  163. First thing is sound.

  164. A sound like a mighty rushing wind.

  165. Imagine like a whirlwind filling this place.

  166. Grab everybody's attention.

  167. Second, there is sight.

  168. Divided tongues as a fire

  169. appeared to them

  170. and rested on each of them.

  171. It says it's like fire.

  172. So it may not be literal fire.

  173. However, it's something

  174. with the appearance of fire.

  175. It looks like tongues of fire

  176. that's resting on each believer.

  177. You see that.

  178. And then third, there is speech.

  179. They were all filled with the Holy Spirit

  180. and began to speak in other tongues

  181. as the Spirit gave them utterance.

  182. So three things.

  183. Both the mighty rushing wind and fire

  184. often appear throughout Scripture

  185. to represent the powerful presence of God.

  186. 2 Kings 2, verse 11,

    2 Kings 2:11

  187. God takes Elijah up into heaven

  188. by a whirlwind

  189. in the midst of chariots and horses of fire.

  190. In Ezekiel 1, verse 4,

    Ezekiel 1:4

  191. when God appears,

  192. it says,

  193. Behold, a stormy wind came out of the north

  194. and a great cloud with brightness around it

  195. and fire flashing forth continually.

  196. And in the midst of the fire,

  197. as it were, a gleaming metal.

  198. Gleaming metal.

  199. So this is a fulfillment

  200. of John the Baptist's prophecy

  201. in Luke 3, verse 16,

    Luke 3:16

  202. when it says that the Messiah

  203. would baptize you

  204. with the Holy Spirit and fire.

  205. It's the fulfillment of Jesus' promise

  206. in Luke 24, verse 49,

    Luke 24:49

  207. in Acts 1-8,

  208. that,

  209. Behold, I am sending the promise

  210. of my Father upon you,

  211. but stay in the city

  212. until you are clothed with power

  213. from on high.

  214. Jesus had said it in John 16, verse 7,

    John 16:7

  215. only after His ascension

  216. can He send the Holy Spirit to us.

  217. And now He keeps that promise

  218. as the risen and ascended Lord.

  219. He sends the Spirit

  220. to indwell God's people

  221. and empower them

  222. to be His witnesses

  223. among the nations.

  224. We saw in Acts 1-11

  225. that Jesus ascended into heaven,

  226. and now we see the Spirit

  227. in Acts 2-2

  228. coming down from heaven.

  229. Sorry, I'm just going to put this down

  230. because I'm short

  231. and I can't see the other faces.

  232. I'm like in the way.

  233. I think it's important

  234. to ask ourselves at this point,

  235. do we associate the Spirit of God

  236. with power

  237. as we see in this passage?

  238. Look at the dramatic entrance, right?

  239. It's unmistakable.

  240. The mighty rushing wind

  241. tongues as a fire.

  242. Is that how you think

  243. of the Holy Spirit?

  244. Or do you tend to think

  245. of the Holy Spirit

  246. as kind of a wallflower?

  247. The quiet type.

  248. Maybe even silent.

  249. That imperceptible,

  250. unnoticeable person

  251. of the Trinity

  252. who stays out of our way.

  253. In our Western world,

  254. we are impressed by

  255. and make much of

  256. physical power,

  257. military power,

  258. political power,

  259. rhetorical power,

  260. rational power even.

  261. But have we uncritically accepted

  262. a materialistic worldview

  263. that underestimates

  264. or ignores spiritual power?

  265. Power from the unseen realms.

  266. Isaiah chapter 31,

    Isaiah 31:1–3

  267. verses 1 to 3,

  268. contrasts spiritual power

  269. from physical power.

  270. It says,

  271. Woe to those who go down to Egypt

  272. for help and rely on horses,

  273. who trust in chariots

  274. because they are many,

  275. and in horsemen

  276. because they are very strong.

  277. But do not look

  278. to the Holy One of Israel

  279. or consult the Lord.

  280. The Egyptians are man

  281. and not God,

  282. and their horses are flesh

  283. and not spirit.

  284. When the Lord

  285. stretches out His hand,

  286. the helper will stumble

  287. and he who is helped

  288. will fall

  289. and they will all perish together.

  290. It's the spirit,

  291. not the flesh,

  292. that is more real

  293. and more powerful

  294. and more dependable,

  295. according to Scripture.

  296. Scripture.

  297. And yet,

  298. too often,

  299. we rely on our own

  300. fleshly strength

  301. related on the Spirit's power

  302. because we are walking

  303. by sight

  304. and not by faith.

  305. So we've seen here

  306. the Spirit's manifestation

  307. in sound and sight,

  308. and the final phenomenon

  309. that Luke notes

  310. is speech.

  311. They were all filled

  312. with the Holy Spirit

  313. and began to speak

  314. in other tongues

  315. as the Spirit

  316. gave them utterance.

  317. So the divided tongues

  318. as of fire

  319. that rested on each believer

  320. is connected

  321. to their speaking

  322. in other tongues.

  323. It's the same word.

  324. Tongues of fire

  325. and speaking other tongues.

  326. So the Greek word

  327. for tongue

  328. is the same

  329. as the word for language.

  330. So then it's

  331. the Spirit of God

  332. resting on them

  333. like a tongue of fire.

  334. That is what enables them

  335. to speak,

  336. to diversify speech

  337. in other languages.

  338. The miracle here

  339. is that believers

  340. are enabled

  341. by the Holy Spirit

  342. to speak foreign languages

  343. that they have never learned.

  344. And that's enabled

  345. by the tongue of fire

  346. that's resting on them.

  347. Now it says in verse 5,

  348. There were dwelling

  349. in Jerusalem Jews,

  350. devout men

  351. from every nation

  352. under heaven,

  353. and at this sound

  354. the multitude

  355. came together

  356. and they were bewildered

  357. because each one

  358. was hearing them

  359. speak in his own language.

  360. A sudden sound

  361. like a mighty rushing wind

  362. of course

  363. would attract the crowd

  364. and it does.

  365. And sure enough,

  366. when they gather,

  367. they are surprised

  368. by yet another sound.

  369. So Pentecost was

  370. the second

  371. of the three major festivals

  372. that the ancient Jews

  373. celebrated

  374. and some scholars

  375. estimate that

  376. close to a million people,

  377. a million pilgrims

  378. visited Jerusalem

  379. for Pentecost.

  380. So this could be

  381. a very sizable crowd.

  382. They're gathered

  383. because of the rushing wind

  384. and the sound

  385. that they hear

  386. and then they hear

  387. these people

  388. praising God

  389. in their own languages

  390. even though they've come

  391. from all these

  392. different nations.

  393. This is a reference

  394. to the Jewish diaspora

  395. who live outside

  396. of historic territories

  397. of Israel

  398. and it says

  399. that they were bewildered

  400. by these sounds

  401. of Galileans

  402. who did not have

  403. a reputation

  404. for being learned

  405. and knowing many languages

  406. speaking in fluently

  407. in these languages

  408. they have never learned.

  409. Let me digress

  410. for a moment

  411. just to explain

  412. the difference

  413. between the tongues

  414. mentioned here

  415. in Acts 2

  416. and the gift of tongues

  417. mentioned in other parts

  418. of the Bible

  419. especially 1 Corinthians 14.

  420. Paul tells us

  421. in 1 Corinthians 14

    1 Corinthians 14:2

  422. verse 2

  423. that the gift

  424. of tongues

  425. enables believers

  426. to utter mysteries

  427. in the spirit

  428. and that no one

  429. but God

  430. understands them.

  431. So in 1 Corinthians 13

  432. he calls it

  433. the tongue of angels

  434. tongues of angels

  435. and so for that reason

  436. in order to understand

  437. the gift of tongues

  438. 1 Corinthians 14

  439. 13 tells us

  440. that we need to pray

  441. that we may interpret.

  442. We need what

  443. 1 Corinthians 12

  444. 10 and 30

  445. calls the interpretation

  446. of tongues

  447. which is a spiritual gift.

  448. In summary then

  449. the gift of tongues

  450. is praise to God

  451. uttered in a heavenly

  452. angelic language

  453. which requires

  454. not a translator

  455. but a spiritual gift

  456. of interpretation.

  457. This is very different

  458. from what's going on

  459. here in Acts chapter 2.

    Acts 2 chapter mention

  460. In Acts chapter 2

    Acts 2:4

  461. verse 4

  462. it says that

  463. they were all filled

  464. with the Holy Spirit

  465. and began to speak

  466. in other tongues

  467. languages

  468. as the Spirit

  469. gave them utterance.

  470. And the fact

  471. that this is a reference

  472. to other human languages

  473. is confirmed

  474. by the Jews' response

  475. in Acts 2

  476. 7 to 8

  477. are not all these

  478. who are speaking Galileans?

  479. And how is it

  480. that we hear each of us

  481. in his own native language?

  482. The word used

  483. for language there

  484. is not the same word

  485. as the word tongue.

  486. It's the word

  487. that can only refer

  488. to a human language.

  489. And so these Jews

  490. from various nations

  491. heard their own

  492. native human language

  493. being spoken

  494. by these believers.

  495. believers.

  496. And the fact

  497. that they were able

  498. to understand

  499. what they were saying

  500. without the gift

  501. of interpretation

  502. also confirms

  503. that this is not

  504. the gift of tongues.

  505. And this is why

  506. some theologians

  507. make a technical

  508. distinction.

  509. They call the gift

  510. of tongues

  511. glossolalia

  512. and they call

  513. this ability

  514. to speak in

  515. other human languages

  516. xenolalia.

  517. But that raises

  518. the question

  519. if what's happening

  520. in Acts 2

  521. is not the spiritual

  522. gift of tongues

  523. what is it?

  524. Why is it happening

  525. at all?

  526. And in order

  527. to understand

  528. Acts 2

  529. we need to understand

  530. Genesis 10 to 12.

  531. In Genesis 10

  532. we find what is called

  533. the table

  534. of the nations.

  535. After the flood

  536. it lists the genealogies

  537. of Noah's three sons

  538. Shem, Ham, and Japheth

  539. and then concludes

  540. in Genesis 10.32

  541. that these are the clans

  542. of the sons of Noah

  543. according to their genealogies

  544. in their nations

  545. and from these

  546. the nations

  547. spread abroad

  548. on the earth

  549. after the flood.

  550. So in the ancient

  551. Greek translation

  552. of the Old Testament

  553. that the New Testament

  554. believers use

  555. the word nation

  556. there's the same word

  557. that's used here

  558. in Acts 2 verse 5

    Acts 2:5

  559. when it says

  560. now there were dwelling

  561. in Jerusalem Jews

  562. devout men

  563. from every nation

  564. under heaven.

  565. And then Luke

  566. lists the nations

  567. that were there

  568. represented in Jerusalem

  569. from east to west

  570. in verses 9 to 11

  571. his Parthians

  572. and Medes

  573. and Elamites

  574. and residents

  575. of Mesopotamia

  576. Judea

  577. and Tappadocia

  578. Pontus

  579. and Asia

  580. Phrygia

  581. and Temphylia

  582. Egypt

  583. and the parts

  584. of Libya

  585. belong to Cyrene

  586. and visitors

  587. from Rome

  588. both Jews

  589. and proselytes

  590. Cretans

  591. and Arabians

  592. now because

  593. Luke uses

  594. contemporary terms

  595. of his day

  596. the names

  597. of the nations

  598. are not exactly

  599. the same

  600. as the nations

  601. listed in the

  602. table of nations

  603. in Genesis chapter 10

    Genesis 10 chapter mention

  604. but if you put them

  605. on the map

  606. they refer to

  607. the exact same nations

  608. in the same

  609. geographic area

  610. so this first map

  611. I hope you guys

  612. can make it out

  613. is the nations

  614. that Luke lists

  615. in chapter 2

  616. of Acts

  617. so he kind of

  618. describes them

  619. from east to west

  620. starting in Parthia

  621. and ending in Rome

  622. but if you look

  623. at the second map

  624. there

  625. this is the map

  626. of the table

  627. of the nations

  628. in Genesis 10

  629. exact same

  630. geographic area

  631. and the description

  632. there

  633. goes in roughly

  634. kind of

  635. counterclockwise

  636. order

  637. from the

  638. northeast

  639. so they're

  640. the nations

  641. from

  642. that form

  643. kind of

  644. the farthest

  645. reaches

  646. of the known

  647. world

  648. at the time

  649. from the

  650. perspective

  651. of an ancient

  652. Jew

  653. and the fact

  654. that Luke

  655. had the table

  656. of the nations

  657. in mind

  658. is confirmed

  659. by what he says

  660. in Luke chapter 10

    Luke 10:1

  661. verse 1

  662. where he tells us

  663. that Jesus chose

  664. and sent out

  665. 72 disciples

  666. there's exactly

  667. 72 descendants

  668. of Noah

  669. in the table

  670. of nations

  671. in Genesis 10

  672. so Luke's

  673. telling us

  674. that God's people

  675. are called

  676. to be missionaries

  677. to all the nations

  678. of the earth

  679. and so he has

  680. that in mind

  681. as he's writing

  682. this

  683. the one notable

  684. difference

  685. is that while

  686. the table

  687. of the nations

  688. goes as far

  689. west as Tarshish

  690. which is modern

  691. day Spain

  692. Luke's list

  693. only goes

  694. as far as

  695. Rome

  696. and that's

  697. because

  698. the book

  699. of Acts

  700. only tracks

  701. Paul's journey

  702. to Rome

  703. that's where

  704. it ends

  705. that's all

  706. that he had

  707. access to

  708. but

  709. interestingly

  710. enough

  711. Paul mentions

  712. twice

  713. in Romans 15

  714. of his intention

  715. to go to Spain

  716. which is modern

  717. which is

  718. what the ancient

  719. city of Tarshish

  720. was

  721. and church

  722. tradition holds

  723. that Paul did

  724. after he's released

  725. from prison

  726. in Rome

  727. go there

  728. so then Luke

  729. is presenting

  730. to us here

  731. in Acts 2

  732. the initial

  733. impetus

  734. of the movement

  735. of the gospel

  736. going forward

  737. to every nation

  738. on earth

  739. and there's

  740. still more

  741. connections

  742. between Acts 2

  743. and Genesis 10

  744. to 12

  745. with the table

  746. of the nations

  747. in Genesis 10

  748. it looks like

  749. human beings

  750. are obeying

  751. their God-given

  752. mandate

  753. to be fruitful

  754. and multiply

  755. and fill the earth

  756. and subdue it

  757. so humans

  758. were created

  759. to reproduce

  760. and spread out

  761. filling the earth

  762. with the image

  763. of God

  764. but God's plan

  765. meets resistance

  766. in Genesis 11

  767. in the land

  768. of Shinar

  769. in the city

  770. of Babel

  771. which is a brazen

  772. name

  773. in Akkadian

  774. means

  775. the gate

  776. of the God

  777. people decide

  778. to settle down

  779. instead of

  780. spreading out

  781. and filling the earth

  782. as God

  783. commanded them

  784. to do

  785. and they say

  786. to each other

  787. in Genesis 11

    Genesis 11:4

  788. verse 4

  789. come let us

  790. build ourselves

  791. a city

  792. and a tower

  793. with its top

  794. in the heavens

  795. and let us

  796. make a name

  797. for ourselves

  798. lest we be

  799. dispersed

  800. over the face

  801. of the whole earth

  802. but God

  803. will have none

  804. of this human

  805. hubris

  806. so it says

  807. the Lord

  808. came down

  809. and confused

  810. their language

  811. so that they

  812. may not

  813. understand

  814. one another's

  815. speech

  816. and he

  817. dispersed

  818. them from

  819. there over

  820. the face

  821. of the earth

  822. and then

  823. there's a word

  824. play on the

  825. name Babel

  826. which in

  827. Hebrew

  828. sounds like

  829. the word

  830. that means

  831. confused

  832. so the

  833. famed

  834. gate of

  835. the God

  836. is reduced

  837. a city

  838. of confused

  839. babblers

  840. recalling

  841. this Babel

  842. incident

  843. Deuteronomy 32

  844. 8-9

  845. says this

  846. when the

  847. Most High

  848. gave to

  849. the nations

  850. their inheritance

  851. when he

  852. divided

  853. mankind

  854. he fixed

  855. the borders

  856. of the peoples

  857. according to

  858. the number

  859. of the sons

  860. of God

  861. but the

  862. Lord's

  863. portion

  864. is his

  865. people

  866. Jacob

  867. his

  868. allotted

  869. heritage

  870. sons of

  871. God

  872. does not

  873. mean

  874. that God

  875. has other

  876. sons

  877. besides

  878. Jesus

  879. the Lord

  880. Yehovah

  881. is called

  882. the Most High

  883. God

  884. who is like

  885. no other

  886. God

  887. he's the

  888. Lord of

  889. Lords

  890. and God

  891. of Gods

  892. and he

  893. exists

  894. in three

  895. persons

  896. Father

  897. Son

  898. and Holy

  899. Spirit

  900. he is

  901. the one

  902. true

  903. God

  904. the

  905. son

  906. is

  907. described

  908. as

  909. his

  910. only

  911. begotten

  912. son

  913. in

  914. John

  915. 3-16

  916. Jesus

  917. is called

  918. his

  919. only

  920. son

  921. in

  922. 1 John

    1 John 4:9

  923. chapter

  924. 4

  925. verse

  926. 9

  927. Jesus

  928. is

  929. unique

  930. but

  931. the

  932. phrase

  933. sons

  934. of

  935. something

  936. in

  937. Hebrew

  938. is

  939. an

  940. idiom

  941. that

  942. doesn't

  943. necessarily

  944. refer

  945. to

  946. paternity

  947. Psalm

  948. 89

  949. 22

  950. for

  951. example

  952. calls

  953. a

  954. wicked

  955. person

  956. a son

  957. of

  958. wickedness

  959. Proverbs

  960. 31

  961. 5

  962. describes

  963. those

  964. who

  965. are

  966. afflicted

  967. as

  968. sons

  969. of

  970. affliction

  971. so

  972. these

  973. sons

  974. of

  975. God

  976. then

  977. are

  978. not

  979. literal

  980. sons

  981. of

  982. God

  983. but

  984. they

  985. are

  986. like

  987. God

  988. like

  989. beings

  990. they

  991. they

  992. are

  993. spiritual

  994. beings

  995. who

  996. are

  997. members

  998. of

  999. the

  1000. divine

  1001. council

  1002. which

  1003. you

  1004. see

  1005. in

  1006. 1

  1007. Kings

  1008. 22

  1009. and

  1010. Job

    Job 1 chapter mention

  1011. chapter

  1012. 1

  1013. and

  1014. 2

  1015. God

  1016. divided

  1017. up

  1018. the

  1019. created

  1020. world

  1021. into

  1022. nations

  1023. ethnic

  1024. people

  1025. groups

  1026. and

  1027. within

  1028. their

  1029. respective

  1030. borders

  1031. according

  1032. to the

  1033. number

  1034. of the

  1035. sons

  1036. of

  1037. God

  1038. meaning

  1039. there's

  1040. a

  1041. spiritual

  1042. being

  1043. that

  1044. rules

  1045. over

  1046. each

  1047. nation

  1048. Israel

  1049. however

  1050. is the

  1051. portion

  1052. of

  1053. Yahweh

  1054. the

  1055. Yehovah

  1056. the

  1057. most

  1058. high

  1059. God

  1060. but

  1061. then

  1062. in

  1063. Psalm

  1064. 82

  1065. God

  1066. rebukes

  1067. these

  1068. sons

  1069. of

  1070. God

  1071. for

  1072. governing

  1073. these

  1074. nations

  1075. with

  1076. injustice

  1077. and

  1078. wickedness

  1079. and

  1080. he

  1081. declares

  1082. that

  1083. he

  1084. will

  1085. demote

  1086. them

  1087. and

  1088. destroy

  1089. them

  1090. in

  1091. the

  1092. future

  1093. it

  1094. says

  1095. in

  1096. 82

  1097. verses

  1098. 6

  1099. to

  1100. 8

  1101. I

  1102. said

  1103. you

  1104. are

  1105. God

  1106. sons

  1107. of

  1108. the

  1109. most

  1110. high

  1111. all

  1112. of

  1113. you

  1114. nevertheless

  1115. like

  1116. men

  1117. you

  1118. shall

  1119. die

  1120. and

  1121. fall

  1122. like

  1123. any

  1124. prince

  1125. arise

  1126. oh

  1127. God

  1128. judge

  1129. the

  1130. earth

  1131. for

  1132. you

  1133. shall

  1134. inherit

  1135. all

  1136. the

  1137. nations

  1138. Asaph

  1139. who

  1140. is

  1141. the

  1142. author

  1143. of

  1144. this

  1145. psalm

  1146. prophesies

  1147. of a

  1148. time

  1149. when

  1150. the

  1151. Lord

  1152. will

  1153. dethrone

  1154. and

  1155. destroy

  1156. these

  1157. so-called

  1158. gods

  1159. of the

  1160. nations

  1161. and

  1162. then

  1163. inherit

  1164. all

  1165. the

  1166. nations

  1167. for

  1168. himself

  1169. so

  1170. all

  1171. of

  1172. this

  1173. forms

  1174. the

  1175. background

  1176. that

  1177. helps

  1178. us

  1179. to

  1180. make

  1181. sense

  1182. of

  1183. what's

  1184. happening

  1185. here

  1186. at

  1187. Pentecost

  1188. the

  1189. word

  1190. divided

  1191. in

  1192. divided

  1193. tongues

  1194. used

  1195. in

  1196. Acts

  1197. 2

  1198. is

  1199. the

  1200. same

  1201. word

  1202. used

  1203. in

  1204. Deuteronomy

  1205. 32

  1206. 8

  1207. to

  1208. refer

  1209. to

  1210. the

  1211. divided

  1212. mankind

  1213. according

  1214. to

  1215. the

  1216. number

  1217. of

  1218. the

  1219. sons

  1220. of

  1221. God

  1222. and

  1223. the

  1224. expression

  1225. other

  1226. languages

  1227. and

  1228. the

  1229. bewilderment

  1230. that is

  1231. caused

  1232. by those

  1233. speaking

  1234. in

  1235. other

  1236. languages

  1237. is

  1238. the

  1239. same

  1240. word

  1241. that

  1242. is

  1243. translated

  1244. as

  1245. confused

  1246. in

  1247. the

  1248. account

  1249. of

  1250. Babel

  1251. in

  1252. Genesis

  1253. 11

  1254. so

  1255. what's

  1256. happening

  1257. here

  1258. in

  1259. Jerusalem

  1260. is

  1261. not

  1262. a

  1263. mere

  1264. local

  1265. event

  1266. it's

  1267. a

  1268. cosmic

  1269. event

  1270. it's

  1271. nothing

  1272. less

  1273. than

  1274. the

  1275. reversal

  1276. of

  1277. Babel

  1278. at

  1279. Babel

  1280. people

  1281. sought

  1282. to

  1283. exalt

  1284. their

  1285. own

  1286. names

  1287. and

  1288. God

  1289. came

  1290. down

  1291. and

  1292. confused

  1293. their

  1294. language

  1295. so

  1296. that

  1297. they

  1298. could

  1299. not

  1300. understand

  1301. one

  1302. another

  1303. speech

  1304. and

  1305. God

  1306. dispersed

  1307. the

  1308. people

  1309. over

  1310. the

  1311. face

  1312. of

  1313. the

  1314. earth

  1315. but

  1316. at

  1317. Pentecost

  1318. God

  1319. comes

  1320. down

  1321. again

  1322. but

  1323. this

  1324. time

  1325. he

  1326. gathers

  1327. all

  1328. the

  1329. nations

  1330. to

  1331. himself

  1332. and

  1333. enables

  1334. them

  1335. to

  1336. understand

  1337. each

  1338. other's

  1339. diverse

  1340. languages

  1341. and

  1342. people

  1343. are

  1344. now

  1345. confused

  1346. that

  1347. they

  1348. can't

  1349. understand

  1350. each

  1351. other

  1352. and

  1353. they

  1354. are

  1355. not

  1356. trying

  1357. to

  1358. promote

  1359. their

  1360. own

  1361. names

  1362. but

  1363. they

  1364. are

  1365. instead

  1366. praising

  1367. the

  1368. name

  1369. of

  1370. Christ

  1371. and

  1372. the

  1373. wondrous

  1374. things

  1375. that

  1376. God

  1377. has

  1378. done

  1379. through

  1380. him

  1381. at

  1382. Pentecost

  1383. the

  1384. spirit

  1385. of

  1386. God

  1495. the

  1516. we

  1517. are

  1551. these

  1556. to sin

  1557. were bound

  1558. to these

  1559. hostile

  1560. spiritual

  1562. of evil

  1563. might be

  1564. absolved

  1565. of their

  1567. and

  1568. redeemed

  1569. rescued

  1570. from

  1571. their

  1577. reign

  1578. of

  1579. Christ

  1580. the

  1581. king

  1582. this

  1583. is

  1584. why

  1585. in

  1586. Peter's

  1587. sermon

  1588. ensuing

  1589. sermon

  1590. he

  1591. explains

  1592. Pentecost

  1593. as proof

  1594. of the

  1595. lordship

  1596. of

  1597. Christ

  1598. he

  1599. explains

  1600. Pentecost

  1601. in terms

  1602. of

  1603. Christ's

  1604. lordship

  1605. I hope

  1606. this is

  1607. exciting

  1608. for you

  1609. guys

  1610. this is

  1611. an epic

  1612. mission

  1613. we're

  1614. part of

  1615. a cosmic

  1616. warfare

  1617. this is

  1618. why

  1619. spiritual

  1620. warfare

  1621. is real

  1622. this is

  1623. why

  1624. we feel

  1625. it here

  1626. this is

  1627. why

  1628. if you

  1629. go to

  1630. mission

  1631. fields

  1632. the

  1633. frontier

  1634. where

  1635. these

  1636. so

  1637. called

  1638. gods

  1639. rule

  1640. the

  1641. battle

  1642. is

  1643. much

  1644. more

  1645. intense

  1646. and

  1647. you

  1648. see

  1649. a

  1650. very

  1651. vivid

  1652. and

  1653. undeniable

  1654. conflict

  1655. because

  1656. there are

  1657. spiritual

  1658. forces

  1659. who have

  1660. had a

  1661. stranglehold

  1662. over these

  1663. nations

  1664. in the

  1665. past

  1666. that are

  1667. now

  1668. opposing

  1669. us

  1670. fighting

  1671. against

  1672. us

  1673. one

  1674. one of

  1675. my

  1676. one of

  1677. my

  1678. favorite

  1679. songs

  1680. facing

  1681. a

  1682. task

  1683. unfinished

  1684. and

  1685. the

  1686. verse

  1687. and

  1688. chorus

  1689. of

  1690. the

  1691. psalm

  1692. captures

  1693. this

  1694. this is

  1695. where

  1696. other

  1697. lords

  1698. beside

  1699. thee

  1700. hold

  1701. their

  1702. unhindered

  1703. sway

  1704. where

  1705. forces

  1706. that

  1707. defy

  1708. thee

  1709. defy

  1710. thee

  1711. still

  1712. today

  1713. with

  1714. none

  1715. to

  1716. heed

  1717. their

  1718. crying

  1719. for

  1720. life

  1721. and

  1722. love

  1723. and

  1724. light

  1725. unnumbered

  1726. souls

  1727. are dying

  1728. and pass

  1729. into

  1730. the

  1731. night

  1732. we

  1733. go

  1734. to

  1735. all

  1736. the

  1737. world

  1738. with

  1739. kingdom

  1740. hope

  1741. unfurled

  1742. no

  1743. other

  1744. name

  1745. has

  1746. power

  1747. to

  1748. save

  1749. but

  1750. Jesus

  1751. Christ

  1752. the

  1753. Lord

  1754. but

  1755. in

  1756. order

  1757. to be

  1758. effective

  1759. witnesses

  1760. of

  1761. Jesus

  1762. Christ

  1763. we

  1764. must

  1765. be

  1766. empowered

  1767. by

  1768. the

  1769. Holy

  1770. Spirit

  1771. it

  1772. says

  1773. in

  1774. verses

  1775. 12

  1776. to

  1777. 13

  1778. and

  1779. all

  1780. were

  1781. amazed

  1782. and

  1783. perplexed

  1784. saying

  1785. to

  1786. one

  1787. another

  1788. what

  1789. does

  1790. this

  1791. mean

  1792. but

  1793. others

  1794. mocking

  1795. said

  1796. they

  1797. are

  1798. filled

  1799. with

  1800. new

  1801. wine

  1802. when

  1803. we

  1804. come

  1805. under

  1806. the

  1807. influence

  1808. and

  1809. power

  1810. of

  1811. the

  1812. Holy

  1813. Spirit

  1814. some

  1815. people

  1816. will

  1817. mock

  1818. us

  1819. and

  1820. say

  1821. that

  1822. we

  1823. are

  1824. filled

  1825. with

  1826. new

  1827. wine

  1828. that

  1829. they're

  1830. crazy

  1831. this

  1832. contrast

  1833. between

  1834. being

  1835. filled

  1836. with

  1837. wine

  1838. and

  1839. being

  1840. filled

  1841. with

  1842. Holy

  1843. Spirit

  1844. occurs

  1845. again

  1846. in

  1847. Ephesians

    Ephesians 5 chapter mention

  1848. chapter

  1849. 5

  1850. 18

  1851. which

  1852. says

  1853. do

  1854. not

  1855. get

  1856. drunk

  1857. with

  1858. wine

  1859. for

  1860. that

  1861. is

  1862. debauchery

  1863. but

  1864. be

  1865. filled

  1866. with

  1867. the

  1868. Spirit

  1869. even

  1870. though

  1871. as

  1872. we

  1873. Holy

  1874. Spirit

  1875. this

  1876. doesn't

  1877. mean

  1878. that

  1879. every

  1880. believer

  1881. is

  1882. full

  1883. of

  1884. the

  1885. Holy

  1886. Spirit

  1887. this

  1888. is

  1889. why

  1890. throughout

  1891. Acts

  1892. Luke

  1893. describes

  1894. certain

  1895. people

  1896. as

  1897. being

  1898. full

  1899. of

  1900. the

  1901. Holy

  1902. Spirit

  1903. which

  1904. implies

  1905. that

  1906. some

  1907. others

  1908. are

  1909. not

  1910. full

  1911. of

  1912. the

  1913. Holy

  1914. Spirit

  1915. for

  1916. example

  1917. in

  1918. Acts

    Acts 6:3

  1919. chapter

  1954. as

  1955. a

  1956. man

  1958. of

  1959. faith

  1960. and

  1961. of

  1962. the

  1963. Holy

  1965. similarly

  1966. Barnabas

  1967. in

  2006. we

  2007. are

  2012. continually

  2013. the

  2014. infilling

  2015. of

  2016. the

  2017. Holy

  2018. Spirit

  2019. and

  2020. this

  2021. is

  2022. why

  2023. the

  2034. with

  2035. the

  2036. Holy

  2037. Spirit

  2038. is

  2039. helpful

  2040. many

  2041. linguists

  2042. speculate

  2043. that

  2044. the

  2045. word

  2046. alcohol

  2047. is

  2048. derived

  2049. from

  2050. the

  2051. Arabic

  2052. word

  2053. which

  2054. means

  2055. spirit

  2056. ancient

  2057. Arabic

  2058. speakers

  2059. may have

  2060. believed

  2061. that a

  2062. drunkard

  2063. was

  2064. possessed

  2065. by a

  2066. spirit

  2067. that

  2068. produced

  2069. intoxication

  2070. whether

  2071. that

  2072. etymology

  2073. is true

  2074. or not

  2075. it

  2076. highlights

  2077. that

  2078. useful

  2079. contrast

  2080. between

  2081. being

  2082. filled

  2083. and

  2084. controlled

  2085. with

  2086. wine

  2087. and

  2088. being

  2089. filled

  2090. and

  2091. controlled

  2092. by

  2093. the

  2094. spirit

  2095. in

  2096. both

  2097. cases

  2098. you

  2099. are

  2100. ceding

  2101. your

  2102. lordship

  2103. and

  2104. your

  2105. possession

  2106. of

  2107. yourself

  2108. I've

  2109. shared

  2110. this

  2111. story

  2112. with

  2113. some

  2114. of

  2115. you

  2116. before

  2117. but

  2118. there's

  2119. a

  2120. homeless

  2121. man

  2122. that

  2123. I've

  2124. come

  2125. to

  2126. know

  2127. in

  2128. East

  2129. Cambridge

  2130. and

  2131. one

  2139. at

  2140. Dunkin

  2141. Donuts

  2142. in

  2143. a

  2144. rare

  2145. and

  2146. remarkable

  2147. moment

  2148. of

  2149. sobriety

  2150. and

  2151. what

  2152. controls

  2153. me

  2154. the

  2155. saddest

  2156. thing

  2157. you can

  2158. hear

  2159. from

  2160. an

  2161. alcoholic

  2162. what

  2163. controls

  2164. you

  2165. we

  2166. call

  2167. drunk

  2168. driving

  2169. DUI

  2170. driving

  2171. under

  2172. the

  2173. influence

  2174. it's

  2175. illegal

  2176. because

  2177. when

  2178. you're

  2179. drunk

  2180. you

  2181. are

  2182. not

  2183. actually

  2184. in

  2186. to

  2187. be

  2188. filled

  2648. prophethood

  2649. priesthood

  2650. judgeship

  2651. kingship

  2652. the

  2653. Spirit

  2654. of God

  2655. came upon

  2656. a

  2657. select

  2658. group

  2659. of

  2660. people

  2661. temporarily

  2662. to

  2663. help

  2664. them

  2665. fulfill

  2666. specific

  2667. charges

  2668. but

  2669. in

  2670. the

  2671. New

  2672. Testament

  2673. age

  2674. the

  2675. Spirit

  2676. of

  2677. power

  2678. comes

  2679. upon

  2680. all

  2681. flesh

  2682. without

  2683. discrimination

2684. of course it's only for those who repent and are baptized in the name of jesus christ for the

2685. forgiveness of sins as peter will qualify in verse 38 but the holy spirit indwells all true

2686. christians whether they are male or female young or old slave or free

2687. and this great privilege that was once the prerogative of kings and prophets and priests

2688. of old is now ours every member of the church

2689. prophecy in a narrow sense is relaying what god reveals to us in the form of speech

2690. words phrases sentences that sometimes god speaks audibly or other times just plants into our minds

2691. spontaneously visions are what god reveals to us in the form of sounds and pictures audio visually

2692. while we are while we are awake dreams are similar except it's what happens when we are sleeping

2693. but all of these can be put under the general category of prophecy as peter does in verse 18

2694. because they're all forms of divine revelation now every believer can hear the voice of god

2695. now this doesn't mean that all believers are prophets

2696. throughout the book of acts luke refers to certain individuals with the title prophet which implies

2697. that not every believer is a prophet for example he calls barnabas simeon lucius and manan prophets in

2698. acts 13 verse 1 he calls judas and silas prophets in acts 15 verse 32 he calls agabus a prophet in acts 21

    Acts 13:1 Acts 15:32 Acts 21:10

2699. verse 10 so not all are prophets and that's confirmed by first corinthians 12 28 to 29 as well where paul

2700. asks the rhetorical question are all prophets assuming that the answer is no because god created the church

2701. to be an interdependent body with diverse gifts not everyone has not one person has all the gifts

2702. because god designed this so that every member of the church is interdependent on each other

2703. so not all are prophets however according to acts 2 17 to 18 every christian has access to the spirit of prophecy

2704. the holy spirit who according to first corinthians 1 searches the depths of god

2705. and comprehends the thoughts of god we all of us have access to this holy spirit

2706. and so in that sense it's not inappropriate to say to speak of the prophethood of all believers

2707. in the same way we speak of the priesthood of all believers

2708. while as a pastor i do represent christ and his authority to the local church i am not a mediator

  2709. between you and god

2710. you need no other human mediator

2711. because there is one god and there is one mediator between god and man the man christ jesus

2712. the god who hears me and speaks to me is the same god who hears you and speaks to you

2713. the very spirit of the living god dwells within you

2714. are you living today like you have this kind of privileged access

2715. sometimes christians live like people who are wandering around the outskirts of a concert venue

2716. trying to peek in to see what's going on inside

2717. wondering if the ticket that they have is even legitimate whether the security guards will kick them out or not

  2718. when in reality

2719. the ticket they have is vip access with full access backstage

2720. if only you draw near to him

2721. if only you would incline your ears to him

2722. you would hear him speak to you

2723. the spirit of the living god dwells within you

  2724. his power

  2725. is yours

  2726. that prophecy in joel

2727. cited here in verses 17 to 18 have already been fulfilled

2728. on the other hand verses 90 to 20 predict future events that have not yet been fulfilled

2729. this and i will show wonders in the heavens above and signs on the earth below blood and fire and vapor of smoke

2730. the sun shall be turned to darkness and the moon to blood before the day of the lord comes

2731. the great and magnificent day

2732. notice that in verse 17 it says the last days in the plural

  2733. but then

2734. in verse 20 it speaks of the last day in the singular

2735. the last days begin with the birth of christ with the coming of christ his first coming

2736. but the last day singular comes when christ returns his second coming

2737. so the joel's prophecy here

  2738. spans that whole gap

  2739. that whole range

2740. so the first part of the events the coming outpouring of the holy spirit has already been fulfilled

2741. it's part of the last days

2742. but these events that precipitate

2743. the return of christ are not yet

2744. it waits to be fulfilled before the last day in the singular

2745. but joel quotes the full passage because he wants to get to joel 2 verse 32

    Joel 2:32

2746. which he quotes in verse 21

2747. and he shall come to pass that everyone who calls upon the name of the lord

  2748. shall be saved

2749. this is the pivot point in peter's sermon

2750. this is when he starts getting evangelistic

2751. the lord's name represents his authority

  2752. his person his power

2753. and to call upon the name of the lord

2754. is to entrust ourselves to his saving work

2755. but who exactly is this lord

2756. in joel's prophecy this lord is

  2757. the lord god jehovah

2758. but as we will see in the following passage next week

2759. peter tells us more specifically that we need to call that this lord

2760. is the lord jesus christ

2761. who died and was raised and ascended to the right hand of the father

2762. this is an incredible statement

2763. he's identifying the man jesus christ

  2764. the son of god

2765. with the lord god of all creation

2766. because it's the risen and ascended lord jesus

2767. who sends the gift of his spirit

  2768. to empower his people

2769. many people in the world are spiritually seeking

  2770. they seek spiritual highs

2771. through a hodgepodge of different practices

  2772. longing for salvation

2773. longing for some experience of transcendence

2774. but if you want a relationship

2775. with the god of the universe

2776. if you want a fellowship

  2777. intimacy

  2778. with the triune god

2779. if you want to receive the gift of the holy spirit

2780. that peter's been speaking of here

2781. that we see here at pentecost

2782. the only way is by repenting of your sinful ways

2783. and believing in jesus and calling upon his name

2784. that is the only way

2785. for there is no other name under heaven

2786. given to mankind by which

  2787. we must be saved

2788. our sinful pride and rebellion against god

2789. our refusal to acknowledge him

  2790. and live for him

2791. we must renounce those things

  2792. we must renounce ourselves

2793. and pledge our allegiance to jesus

  2794. and believe in his

  2795. atoning death

2796. that he paid for our sins

2797. on the cross for us

  2798. that's the only way

  2799. in ezekiel chapter 10

    Ezekiel 10 chapter mention

  2800. prophet ezekiel describes

2801. a sad picture of the spirit of god

  2802. the glory of god

2803. departing the temple in jerusalem

2804. and then later he prophesies

  2805. in ezekiel chapter 36

    Ezekiel 36 chapter mention

2806. of how the spirit of god

  2807. will return

  2808. he will gather

2809. his people from among the nations

  2810. cleanse them

2811. sprinkle clean water on them

2812. he will give them a new heart

  2813. and a new spirit

2814. he will put within them

2815. he will remove the heart of stone

  2816. from your flesh

2817. and give you a heart of flesh

2818. and he will put my spirit within you

2819. and cause you to walk in my statutes

2820. and be careful to obey my rules

  2821. that's what we're seeing

  2822. here in pentecost

  2823. in acts chapter 2

    Acts 2 chapter mention

  2824. the spirit of god

  2825. and 1 corinthians 6

  2826. describes

  2827. believers

  2828. christians

2829. as a temple of the holy spirit

2830. if you want to be a temple

  2831. of the holy spirit

2832. if you want the spirit of god

  2833. to dwell within you

2834. the spirit is not coming

  2835. when you are still

  2836. alienated from god

2837. and defiled by your sins

2838. he is a holy spirit

  2839. and this is why

2840. you must turn to jesus

  2841. entrust yourself to him

2842. be reconciled to god the father

  2843. through jesus

2844. and then he will sprinkle

2845. his clean water on you

2846. then he will give you

  2847. a new heart

  2848. and he will come

  2849. and dwell within you

  2850. then

  2851. you will taste

  2852. this power

2853. of the spirit of god

  2854. let's pray together

  2855. heavenly father

2856. we pray for all those

  2857. who are

  2858. watching

  2859. or listening

2860. and all those who are here

2861. who do not yet know you
