  1. Let me pray now for the reading and preaching of God's Word.

  2. Heavenly Father,

  3. You have entrusted to us

  4. the mystery of the Gospel.

  5. That precious message,

  6. good news of salvation in Jesus.

  7. And Lord, we want to be faithful stewards of that message.

  8. We want to cherish it,

  9. pass on the deposit,

  10. that apostolic deposit that has been passed down to us.

  11. We want to share the good news of Jesus Christ

  12. with our friends and neighbors and our family.

  13. But Lord, in order to do that,

  14. we need boldness.

  15. We need to be empowered by Your Holy Spirit.

  16. So we ask that You would do that tonight

  17. by speaking to us through Your Word,

  18. in Your Word.

  19. In Jesus' name we pray. Amen.

  20. Acts chapter 4, verses 13 through 31.

    Acts 4:13–31

  21. Now when they saw the boldness of Peter and John

  22. and perceived that they were uneducated, common men,

  23. they were astonished,

  24. and they recognized that they had been with Jesus.

  25. But seeing the man who was healed standing beside them,

  26. they had nothing to say in opposition.

  27. But when they had commanded them to leave the council,

  28. they conferred with one another,

  29. saying,

  30. What shall we do with these men?

  31. For that a notable sign that has been performed through them

  32. is evident to all the inhabitants of Jerusalem,

  33. and we cannot deny it.

  34. But in order that it may spread no further among the people,

  35. let us warn them to speak no more to anyone in this name.

  36. So they called them and charged them

  37. not to speak or teach at all in the name of Jesus.

  38. But Peter and John answered them,

  39. Whether it is right in the sight of God

  40. to listen to you rather than to God,

  41. you must judge.

  42. For we cannot but speak

  43. of what we have seen and heard.

  44. And when they had further threatened them,

  45. they let them go,

  46. finding no way to punish them

  47. because of the people.

  48. For all were praising God for what had happened.

  49. For the man on whom this sign of healing was performed

  50. was more than 40 years old.

  51. When they were released,

  52. they went to their friends

  53. and reported what the chief priests

  54. and the elders had said to them.

  55. And when they heard it,

  56. they lifted their voices together to God

  57. and said,

  58. Sovereign Lord,

  59. who made the heaven and the earth

  60. and the sea and everything in them,

  61. who through the mouth of our father David,

  62. your servant,

  63. said by the Holy Spirit,

  64. why did the Gentiles rage

  65. and the peoples plot in vain?

  66. The kings of the earth set themselves

  67. and the rulers were gathered together

  68. against the Lord

  69. and against his anointed.

  70. For truly,

  71. in this city,

  72. there were gathered together

  73. against your holy servant Jesus,

  74. whom you anointed,

  75. both Herod and Pontius Pilate,

  76. along with the Gentiles

  77. and the peoples of Israel,

  78. to do whatever your hand

  79. and your plan

  80. had predestined to take place.

  81. And now,

  82. Lord,

  83. look upon their threats

  84. and grant to your servants

  85. to continue to speak your word

  86. with all boldness

  87. while you stretch out your hand to heal

  88. and signs and wonders

  89. are performed through the name

  90. of your holy servant Jesus.

  91. And when they had prayed,

  92. the place in which they were gathered together

  93. was shaken

  94. and they were all filled

  95. with the Holy Spirit

  96. and continued to speak

  97. the word of God

  98. with boldness.

  99. This is God's holy

  100. and authoritative word.

  101. In 1521,

  102. Martin Luther stood on trial

  103. before the Holy Roman Emperor

  104. in the Diet of Worms.

  105. He was being charged for heresy

  106. because he published

  107. the 95 Theses,

  108. which denounced the use

  109. of indulgences

  110. by the Roman Catholic Church.

  111. An indulgence was something

  112. that believers can purchase

  113. with money

  114. in order to reduce

  115. their punishment for sin.

  116. A popular preacher

  117. and really a precursor

  118. to the modern prosperity

  119. gospel preachers

  120. was Johann Tetzel.

  121. And the Pope was engaged

  122. in the most expensive

  123. church building project

  124. up to that point,

  125. St. Peter's Basilica.

  126. And he needed a lot of fundraisers.

  127. And Johann Tetzel

  128. was one of the most effective

  129. fundraisers he had.

  130. He would often repeat this refrain

  131. in front of captivated audiences.

  132. As soon as the coin

  133. in the coffer rings,

  134. the soul into heaven springs.

  135. But Martin Luther challenged

  136. this claim on the basis

  137. of Scripture,

  138. insisting that forgiveness

  139. for sin cannot be purchased

  140. with money.

  141. And that salvation

  142. is only by God's grace alone,

  143. through faith in Jesus Christ alone.

  144. And for his stand

  145. for this biblical truth,

  146. Luther was now standing

  147. trial for heresy

  148. at the Diet of Worms.

  149. And at the end

  150. of the interrogation,

  151. after he had been commanded

  152. to recant all that he had taught,

  153. Luther,

  154. standing before

  155. Charles V,

  156. the emperor

  157. of the Roman Empire,

  158. standing before

  159. Dr. Jeremy Scherf,

  160. the Wittenberg professor

  161. in canon law,

  162. standing before

  163. Dr. Johann Eck,

  164. the renowned

  165. German scholastic theologian,

  166. so standing before

  167. basically the highest

  168. political authority,

  169. the academic authority,

  170. and the clerical authority,

  171. all the movers

  172. and shakers

  173. of his world,

  174. Luther said this,

  175. quote,

  176. unless I am convinced

  177. by the testimony

  178. of the Scriptures

  179. or by clear reason,

  180. for I do not trust

  181. either in the Pope

  182. or in councils alone,

  183. since it is well known

  184. that they have often

  185. erred and contradicted

  186. themselves,

  187. I am bound

  188. by the Scriptures

  189. I have quoted,

  190. and my conscience

  191. is captive

  192. to the Word of God.

  193. I cannot

  194. and will not

  195. recant anything,

  196. since it is neither safe

  197. nor right

  198. to go against conscience.

  199. Here I stand.

  200. I can do no other.

  201. May God help me.

  202. Amen.

  203. He was immediately

  204. declared a heretic

  205. and an outlaw,

  206. and the council

  207. permitted anyone

  208. to kill Luther

  209. without legal consequence.

  210. But Luther's bold testimony

  211. was an inflection point

  212. in church history.

  213. It propelled

  214. the Protestant Reformation

  215. and changed the course

  216. of world history.

  217. But where does

  218. such boldness

  219. come from?

  220. What is its origin?

  221. What is the basis

  222. for such boldness?

  223. If you are like me,

  224. there have been times

  225. you didn't feel bold at all.

  226. Perhaps you are familiar

  227. with the feeling

  228. of being in a group conversation

  229. that is disparaging

  230. of Christ and His Word,

  231. but you are cowered

  232. by the sneering

  233. and mocking

  234. and just go along

  235. with the flow

  236. of the conversation

  237. without saying anything.

  238. Perhaps you are familiar

  239. with the feeling

  240. of not being able

  241. to share the good news

  242. of Jesus Christ,

  243. even when your conversation

  244. with your friend

  245. or neighbor

  246. presents a wonderful

  247. opportunity for it

  248. because you feel awkward

  249. and afraid,

  250. maybe even ashamed.

  251. Maybe you have wondered,

  252. how can I be more bold

  253. for the sake of Christ?

  254. Acts chapter 4,

    Acts 4 chapter mention

  255. 13 to 31,

  256. teaches us this,

  257. that we must speak

  258. the Word of God

  259. with boldness

  260. despite opposition

  261. from the powers that be.

  262. It tells us the reason

  263. to speak the Word

  264. with boldness,

  265. the authority

  266. to speak the Word

  267. with boldness,

  268. and finally,

  269. the power

  270. to speak the Word

  271. with boldness.

  272. So let's look at those

  273. three things in turn.

  274. Verse 13 tells us

  275. that when the Jewish rulers,

  276. elders, and scribes

  277. saw the boldness

  278. of Peter and John

  279. and perceived

  280. that they were

  281. uneducated common men,

  282. they were astonished.

  283. The word boldness

  284. refers to how

  285. Peter and John

  286. frankly, freely,

  287. and fearlessly

  288. taught the people

  289. about Jesus Christ.

  290. But it's not simply

  291. their boldness

  292. that astonishes

  293. these Jewish rulers.

  294. It's their boldness

  295. despite the fact

  296. that they were

  297. uneducated common men.

  298. Human pride, too,

  299. can produce boldness.

  300. Degrees,

  301. noble birth,

  302. societal rank,

  303. fame,

  304. celebrity,

  305. power,

  306. authority,

  307. they can make

  308. people bold.

  309. That's what made

  310. these Jewish rulers

  311. bold

  312. in their own way.

  313. If you remember

  314. from earlier

  315. in chapter 4,

  316. they barged in

  317. aggressively,

  318. interrupted Peter and John

  319. as they were teaching

  320. the people,

  321. and they apprehended them.

  322. They were so bold

  323. to do such things

  324. because they thought

  325. to themselves,

  326. well, this is our jurisdiction.

  327. We are the religious

  328. authorities.

  329. We have the

  330. scholarly education

  331. and the proper

  332. credentials.

  333. That's why

  334. they were bold.

  335. Peter and John

  336. had no such things.

  337. They were uneducated

  338. common men,

  339. fishermen by trade,

  340. manual laborers.

  341. They had no formal

  342. rabbinical training.

  343. They were ordinary men,

  344. lay people,

  345. amateurs.

  346. And yet,

  347. before the leading

  348. politicians

  349. and scholars

  350. and lawyers

  351. and judges

  352. and the clerics

  353. of their day,

  354. they had boldness

  355. because this boldness

  356. rested not on

  357. themselves

  358. and their abilities,

  359. but on the authority

  360. of Christ

  361. who had commissioned them.

  362. In Matthew chapter 28,

    Matthew 28 chapter mention

  363. 18 to 20,

  364. when Jesus commissions

  365. his disciples,

  366. he says,

  367. all authority

  368. in heaven and on earth

  369. has been given to me.

  370. Go therefore

  371. and make disciples

  372. of all nations.

  373. Jesus' authority

  374. in all of heaven

  375. and earth

  376. is the basis

  377. for the commission

  378. to go out

  379. and make disciples

  380. of all nations.

  381. And for this reason,

  382. Peter and John

  383. needed no further

  384. accreditation

  385. or authorization

  386. from the Jewish leaders.

  387. Likewise,

  388. you don't need

  389. to have

  390. a seminary degree

  391. or be a pastor

  392. to be a bold witness

  393. for Christ.

  394. You don't need

  395. to have read

  396. all the apologetics books

  397. in order to be

  398. a bold witness

  399. for Christ.

  400. But you do need

  401. one thing.

  402. You must know Christ.

  403. You need to have

  404. been with Him.

  405. And the Jewish rulers

  406. make this connection

  407. at the end

  408. of verse 13.

  409. It says that

  410. they recognize

  411. that Peter and John

  412. had been with Jesus.

  413. In Mark 3, 14,

  414. Jesus appoints

  415. His 12 apostles

  416. to follow Him.

  417. And He says explicitly

  418. that He did so

  419. in order that

  420. they might be with Him

  421. and He might send them

  422. out to preach.

  423. The phrase

  424. to be with Jesus

  425. is a language

  426. of discipleship.

  427. It means to be

  428. a follower of Jesus,

  429. to accompany Him,

  430. imitate Him,

  431. to learn from Him,

  432. be His apprentice.

  433. This is the one condition

  434. for bearing

  435. bold witness

  436. to Jesus.

  437. In order to bear witness

  438. to Jesus,

  439. you must be

  440. His follower.

  441. You have to have

  442. been with Him.

  443. Peter and John

  444. say later in verse 20,

  445. for we cannot

  446. but speak

  447. of what we have

  448. seen and heard.

  449. Peter and John

  450. have seen

  451. Jesus' signs

  452. and wonders.

  453. They had heard

  454. His teachings.

  455. They had a relationship

  456. with Him.

  457. They knew His character.

  458. They witnessed

  459. His life,

  460. death,

  461. and resurrection,

  462. and ascension

  463. to heaven.

  464. In short,

  465. they had been

  466. with Jesus

  467. and those

  468. who have been

  469. with Jesus

  470. can't help

  471. but speak

  472. of what they

  473. have seen

  474. and heard.

  475. Because Jesus

  476. is so real

  477. to them,

  478. so compelling

  479. to them,

  480. they can't be silent.

  481. Peter and John

  482. can't help

  483. but speak

  484. of what they

  485. have seen

  486. and heard,

  487. but in contrast,

  488. the Jewish rulers

  489. are silenced.

  490. It says in verse 14,

  491. But seeing the man

  492. who was healed

  493. standing beside them,

  494. they had nothing

  495. to say

  496. in opposition.

  497. The proof

  498. of the authority

  499. and power

  500. of the name

  501. of Jesus

  502. is clearly

  503. in display here

  504. with the man

  505. who had been

  506. born lame

  507. now standing

  508. healed

  509. beside them.

  510. So the Jewish rulers

  511. have nothing

  512. to say

  513. because the proof

  514. is right there

  515. in that man.

  516. They can say

  517. nothing to contradict

  518. Peter and John's

  519. claims.

  520. And you would think

  521. that this would lead

  522. them to faith

  523. in Jesus,

  524. but it doesn't.

  525. It says in verses

  526. 15 to 17,

  527. But when they had

  528. commanded them

  529. to leave the council,

  530. they considered

  531. with one another,

  532. saying,

  533. What shall we do

  534. with these men?

  535. For that a notable sign

  536. has been performed

  537. through them

  538. is evident

  539. to all the inhabitants

  540. of Jerusalem

  541. and we cannot deny it.

  542. But in order

  543. that it may spread

  544. no further

  545. among the people,

  546. let us warn them

  547. to speak no more

  548. to anyone

  549. in this name.

  550. This is in stark

  551. contrast

  552. to the congregation's

  553. response to Peter's

  554. sermon earlier

  555. in Acts chapter 2

    Acts 2:37

  556. verse 37.

  557. When they heard

  558. Peter's teaching,

  559. it says that

  560. they asked themselves,

  561. Brothers,

  562. what shall we do?

  563. In contrast,

  564. here the Jewish rulers

  565. in our passage,

  566. in chapter 4

  567. verse 16,

  568. asked themselves,

  569. What shall we do

  570. with these men?

  571. They are not concerned

  572. with the claim

  573. of the gospel

  574. of Jesus Christ,

  575. the claim of God's word

  576. upon their lives.

  577. They are not concerned

  578. with reforming

  579. their own erroneous beliefs

  580. and are instead

  581. only concerned

  582. with shushing up

  583. Peter and John,

  584. who has become

  585. a nuisance for them.

  586. Instead of listening

  587. to their message,

  588. they are only concerned

  589. with shutting them up.

  590. This is the kind

  591. of hard-heartedness

  592. that our sinful

  593. human hearts

  594. are capable of.

  595. These Jewish rulers

  596. have witnessed

  597. a clear miracle.

  598. They call it themselves

  599. a notable sign,

  600. a sign that points

  601. to the work of God.

  602. They admit that

  603. it is undeniable

  604. and yet still

  605. they try to figure out

  606. a way to silence

  607. the first Christians.

  608. They don't want

  609. the teaching

  610. accompanied,

  611. accompanying that

  612. notable sign

  613. that they have admitted.

  614. Here's clear proof

  615. that faith

  616. is necessary,

  617. is a necessary

  618. divinely appointed means

  619. by which God saves us.

  620. It's impossible

  621. to demonstrate

  622. the truth

  623. of the gospel

  624. in such a way

  625. that no faith

  626. is necessary.

  627. It's impossible.

  628. No matter how clear

  629. the proof,

  630. there will always

  631. be people

  632. who refuse

  633. to believe

  634. because God

  635. has ordained

  636. that we can be

  637. saved by His grace

  638. through faith

  639. in Jesus Christ alone.

  640. We can only see

  641. through eyes of faith.

  642. God

  643. and what the Jewish

  644. rulers

  645. are opposing

  646. here is clear.

  647. Look at verse 17.

  648. It says,

  649. Let us warn them

  650. to speak no more

  651. to anyone in this name.

  652. And again,

  653. in verse 18,

  654. they charge them

  655. not to speak

  656. or teach

  657. at all

  658. in the name of Jesus.

  659. These Jewish rulers

  660. have no problem

  661. with the apostles

  662. going around

  663. and healing people

  664. and doing good deeds.

  665. but they do

  666. have a problem

  667. if they're speaking

  668. in the name

  669. of Jesus.

  670. Isn't this the case

  671. in our day

  672. and age also?

  673. People have

  674. no problem

  675. with Christians

  676. doing charity work,

  677. community service.

  678. They have no problem

  679. whatsoever

  680. with you being

  681. a spiritual person.

  682. People don't object

  683. to you praying

  684. or meditating.

  685. Most people

  686. don't even object

  687. to us talking

  688. generally about God

  689. and faith.

  690. But as soon

  691. as we start speaking

  692. of the name

  693. of Jesus,

  694. people squirm

  695. and withdraw.

  696. Or at times

  697. become downright

  698. dismissive

  699. or hostile.

  700. That's because,

  701. as we said

  702. early in verse 12,

  703. there is no

  704. one else.

  705. There's salvation

  706. in no one else

  707. for there is

  708. no other name

  709. under heaven

  710. given among men

  711. by which we must

  712. be saved.

  713. Satan and his minions

  714. know this well.

  715. And as the prince

  716. of the power

  717. of the air,

  718. the ruler

  719. of this fallen world

  720. as the Bible calls it,

  721. Satan shudders

  722. at the name

  723. of Jesus.

  724. And he opposes

  725. with all his might

  726. the spread

  727. of the name

  728. of Jesus.

  729. And as Christians,

  730. as followers

  731. of Christ,

  732. we must expect

  733. this resistance

  734. and persevere

  735. in proclaiming

  736. the name

  737. of Jesus.

  738. It says in

  739. verses 19-20,

  740. but Peter and John

  741. answer them,

  742. whether it is right

  743. in the sight of God

  744. to listen to you

  745. rather than to God,

  746. you must judge,

  747. for we cannot

  748. but speak

  749. of what we have

  750. seen and heard.

  751. Peter and John

  752. are Jews,

  753. so they did have

  754. some obligation

  755. to these Jewish rulers.

  756. The high priests,

  757. the elders of Jerusalem,

  758. the scribes,

  759. the Sanhedrin,

  760. they were subject

  761. to these authorities.

  762. And yet,

  763. Peter and John

  764. insist that they have

  765. a higher allegiance

  766. to God.

  767. Contrast Peter and John's

  768. stand here

  769. in verses 19-20

  770. with the Jewish rulers,

  771. compromise,

  772. and cowardice

  773. in verses 21-22.

  774. He says,

  775. And when they had

  776. further threatened them,

  777. they let them go,

  778. finding no way

  779. to punish them

  780. because of the people.

  781. For all were praising God

  782. for what had happened.

  783. For the man on whom

  784. this sign of healing

  785. was performed

  786. was more than 40 years old.

  787. The lame man

  788. that was healed

  789. was more than 40 years old,

  790. meaning his healing

  791. was well beyond

  792. the realm

  793. of natural possibilities.

  794. It cannot be explained

  795. by anything but a miracle.

  796. And because they cannot

  797. deny the miracle

  798. and knowing that

  799. the people

  800. were quite excited

  801. about this sign

  802. from God

  803. and were praising God

  804. in response,

  805. they decide merely

  806. to threaten

  807. Peter and John

  808. and let them go.

  809. They want to do more.

  810. They want to

  811. put them in jail.

  812. They want to punish them.

  813. Maybe they even

  814. want to harm them.

  815. But they're afraid

  816. of the people.

  817. Afraid that there might

  818. be a riot,

  819. an uproar.

  820. They make this decision

  821. because of the people.

  822. In contrast,

  823. Peter and John

  824. do what they do

  825. because that's what

  826. is right in the sight

  827. of God.

  828. This is the difference

  829. between the fear

  830. of God

  831. and the fear

  832. of man.

  833. Fear of man

  834. manifests itself

  835. in our susceptibility

  836. to peer pressure

  837. or our preoccupation

  838. with self-esteem.

  839. Both of these things

  840. reveal that our lives

  841. revolve around

  842. what others think of us.

  843. And the heart

  844. of the problem

  845. with the fear of man

  846. is that we need

  847. people for our own glory

  848. rather than loving

  849. people for God's glory.

  850. And the antidote

  851. to the fear

  852. of man

  853. is the fear

  854. of God.

  855. To be so consumed

  856. by God's glory,

  857. to be so aware

  858. of God's importance,

  859. that what a mere man

  860. says about us

  861. matters little.

  862. If you seek to do

  863. what is right

  864. in the sight of man,

  865. you will learn quickly

  866. that you cannot

  867. please everyone

  868. and that human beings

  869. are quite fickle.

  870. You will need

  871. constantly to update

  872. your beliefs

  873. and behaviors,

  874. to conform

  875. to their ever-changing

  876. whims.

  877. But that's not

  878. what Christians

  879. are called to do.

  880. We are called to do

  881. what is right

  882. in the sight

  883. of God.

  884. We are to speak

  885. and act

  886. not because of the people,

  887. but because of God.

  888. If we are controlled

  889. by the fear of man

  890. rather than the fear

  891. of God,

  892. we will never be

  893. bold witnesses

  894. for Jesus Christ.

  895. Frederick the Great,

  896. the 18th century

  897. king of Prussia,

  898. is said to have

  899. once invited

  900. some of the nobles

  901. and notable people

  902. to his royal table

  903. to dine with him,

  904. and that included

  905. an invitation

  906. to all of his

  907. top-ranking generals

  908. in the army.

  909. One of those generals

  910. was Hans Joachim

  911. von Zieten.

  912. He declined

  913. this invitation

  914. because he wanted

  915. to partake

  916. in corporate worship

  917. of the church

  918. and communion

  919. in his church.

  920. And at a later banquet

  921. when von Zieten

  922. was present

  923. to dine with

  924. the king of Prussia,

  925. Frederick the Great,

  926. Frederick mocked

  927. the general

  928. for his religious beliefs.

  929. And the other guests

  930. gladly joined in

  931. on the fun,

  932. joking about

  933. the Lord's Supper,

  934. making fun

  935. of General von Zieten.

  936. And finally,

  937. the general stood up

  938. and respectfully

  939. addressed the monarch.

  940. Quote,

  941. Our Majesty knows well

  942. that in war

  943. I have never feared

  944. any danger

  945. and have everywhere

  946. boldly risked my life

  947. for you

  948. and my country.

  949. But there is one

  950. above us

  951. who is greater

  952. than you or me,

  953. greater than all men.

  954. He is the Savior

  955. and Redeemer

  956. who has died

  957. also for your majesty

  958. and has dearly

  959. bought us

  960. with his own blood.

  961. This one

  962. I can never

  963. allow to be insulted

  964. for on him

  965. I repose my faith,

  966. my comfort,

  967. and my hope

  968. in life and death.

  969. And then the general

  970. asked to be excused.

  971. The stunned guests

  972. silently trembled

  973. realizing that

  974. von Zieten

  975. very well might get killed.

  976. However,

  977. Frederick recognized

  978. von Zieten's

  979. quality of character

  980. and knew that

  981. he was exactly

  982. the kind of man

  983. he wanted

  984. as his courageous general.

  985. And so he quickly

  986. grasped his hands

  987. and asked his forgiveness

  988. and requested

  989. that he remain.

  990. He promised

  991. that he would never

  992. again allow

  993. such a travesty

  994. to be made

  995. of sacred things.

  996. Of course,

  997. the response

  998. from people

  999. will not always

  1000. be favorable

1001. as was in the case

  1002. of von Zieten.

  1003. In certain parts

  1004. of the world,

  1005. it will lead

  1006. to overt persecution

  1007. and even martyrdom.

  1008. Even in free

  1009. and open

  1010. democratic societies

  1011. like ours,

  1012. Christians can face

  1013. ostracism

  1014. and discrimination

  1015. for standing firm

  1016. on their beliefs.

  1017. Remember what Jesus

1018. told us in John 15

    John 15:20

  1019. verse 20,

  1020. A servant is not

  1021. greater than his master.

  1022. If they persecuted me,

  1023. they will also

  1024. persecute you.

  1025. But regardless

  1026. of the outcome,

  1027. we must speak

  1028. the word of God

  1029. with boldness

  1030. despite opposition

  1031. from the powers

  1032. that be.

  1033. Why?

  1034. Because there is

1035. salvation in no one else.

  1036. For there is no

  1037. other name

  1038. under heaven

  1039. given among men

  1040. by which we must

  1041. be saved.

  1042. Why?

  1043. Must we proclaim

  1044. with boldness

  1045. because we have

  1046. been with Jesus.

  1047. because we cannot

  1048. but speak

  1049. of what we have

  1050. seen and heard.

  1051. This is the reason

  1052. to speak the word

  1053. with boldness.

  1054. Now let's look

  1055. at verses 23 to 28

  1056. which teaches

  1057. about the authority

  1058. to speak the word

  1059. with boldness.

1060. It says in verse 23,

  1061. When they were released,

1062. they went to their friends

  1063. and reported

  1064. what the chief priests

  1065. and the elders

  1066. had said to them.

  1067. Having been assailed

  1068. and threatened

  1069. by others,

  1070. Peter and John

  1071. returned to their friends.

  1072. The phrase literally means

1073. they went to their own.

  1074. In other words,

  1075. they went to those

  1076. to whom they belong.

  1077. They went to those

  1078. with whom they shared

  1079. their allegiance

  1080. to Jesus.

  1081. And then,

  1082. gathered together,

  1083. they called out

  1084. to God in prayer

  1085. in verses 24 to 25.

1086. And when they heard it,

  1087. they lifted their voices

  1088. together to God

  1089. and said,

  1090. Sovereign Lord,

  1091. who made heaven

  1092. and earth

  1093. and the sea

  1094. and everything in them,

  1095. who through the mouth

  1096. of our father David,

  1097. your servant,

1098. said by the Holy Spirit.

  1099. The Jewish rulers,

  1100. early in verse 15,

  1101. conferred with one another,

  1102. but we cannot,

1103. we not only can confer

  1104. with our friends,

  1105. with one another,

  1106. we can also confer

  1107. with God himself

  1108. through prayer.

  1109. That's the power

  1110. we have access to.

  1111. And the disciples explicitly

  1112. quote Psalm chapter 2,

    Psalms 2:1–2

  1113. verses 1 to 2,

  1114. and verses 25 to 26.

1115. But in addition to that,

1116. they also echo the language

  1117. of several other psalms

  1118. in their prayer.

  1119. So first,

1120. the way they address God here

  1121. in their prayer

  1122. echoes Psalm 146,

    Psalms 146:3–6

  1123. verses 3 to 6,

  1124. where God is addressed

  1125. as the Lord

1126. who made heaven and earth,

  1127. the sea and all

  1128. that is in them.

  1129. It's notable

1130. in that very same psalm

  1131. in verse 3,

  1132. it says,

  1133. put not your trust

  1134. in princes,

1135. in a son of man

  1136. in whom there is

  1137. no salvation.

  1138. In the Greek translation

  1139. of the Old Testament

1140. that the early believers used,

  1141. the word princes

1142. is the same Greek word

  1143. as the one used

  1144. in Acts 4,

    Acts 4:5

  1145. verse 5 and verse 8

  1146. to refer to

  1147. the Jewish rulers.

  1148. It's the same word

  1149. that is used

  1150. in the citation

  1151. of Psalm chapter 2,

    Psalms 2:2

  1152. verse 2 and verse 16

1153. to refer to the rulers.

  1154. And this allusion

  1155. to rulers

  1156. is intentional.

  1157. We are not

  1158. to put our trust

  1159. in human rulers,

  1160. including these

  1161. Jewish rulers,

  1162. because there is

  1163. no salvation in them,

  1164. as Psalm 146

  1165. makes clear.

  1166. Instead,

1167. we are to put our trust

  1168. in the Lord Jesus,

  1169. King Jesus,

  1170. in whose name alone

  1171. there is salvation.

  1172. Anas,

  1173. Caiaphas,

  1174. John,

  1175. Alexander,

  1176. the members

1177. of the high priestly family,

  1178. the rulers of Israel

  1179. cannot save anyone.

1180. They do not offer salvation,

1181. which can only be found

1182. in the name of Jesus Christ.

  1183. So Peter and John

  1184. and the other Christians

  1185. who are praying

  1186. in this moment

  1187. are saying,

  1188. is the temple

  1189. your domain,

  1190. you Jewish rulers?

  1191. Is Jerusalem

  1192. your jurisdiction?

  1193. Well,

  1194. we are praying

  1195. to the sovereign Lord

  1196. whose jurisdiction

  1197. is the heaven

  1198. and the earth

  1199. and the sea

  1200. and everything

  1201. that is in them.

1202. It is by His authority

  1203. that we proclaim

  1204. the name of Jesus

  1205. and His authority

  1206. trumps yours.

  1207. This is the authority

  1208. to speak the word

  1209. with boldness.

  1210. And then in verses

  1211. 25 to 26,

1212. they quote Psalm chapter 2

    Psalms 2:1–2

  1213. verses 1 to 2.

  1214. Why did the Gentiles

  1215. rage

  1216. and the peoples

  1217. plot in vain?

1218. The kings of the earth

  1219. set themselves

  1220. and the rulers

  1221. were gathered together

  1222. against the Lord

  1223. and against His anointed.

  1224. The main point

  1225. of Psalm 2

  1226. is that even when

  1227. we are embattled

  1228. by the nations

  1229. and their rulers

  1230. who oppose God

  1231. and His anointed,

  1232. we can take refuge

  1233. in God

  1234. because He remains

  1235. enthroned as King

  1236. over all.

  1237. It's a wonderful psalm

  1238. that we can't explore

  1239. in all its fullness

  1240. right now,

  1241. but in it,

1242. the nations of the earth

  1243. and their rulers

  1244. oppose God

  1245. and His anointed King,

  1246. which points to Jesus,

  1247. the Messianic King.

  1248. And they conspire together

  1249. and marshal

  1250. all their forces

  1251. against God.

  1252. But it says

  1253. in verse 4

  1254. of Psalm 2,

  1255. He who sits

  1256. in the heavens

  1257. laughs.

  1258. The Lord holds them

  1259. in derision.

  1260. The phrase

  1261. He who sits

  1262. is a literal translation

  1263. that can be rendered

  1264. He is enthroned.

  1265. and it highlights

  1266. God's sovereign worship.

  1267. When the kings

  1268. and rulers

  1269. of the nations

  1270. are plotting

  1271. and assembling

  1272. together

  1273. against God,

  1274. God is not

  1275. standing up

  1276. and leaning forward,

  1277. looking out,

  1278. concerned.

  1279. God is not

  1280. pacing around

  1281. wracked

  1282. with anxiety

  1283. as the nations

  1284. are gathering together

  1285. and marshaling

  1286. their forces.

  1287. No,

  1288. He is rather

  1289. sitting

  1290. and laughing.

  1291. When I was

  1292. a young boy,

  1293. I used to love

  1294. wrestling

1295. with one of my uncles.

  1296. Being an

  1297. undersized

  1298. but spirited

  1299. boy that I was,

  1300. I always thought

  1301. I had a fighting chance

  1302. and I'd use

  1303. all my strength

1304. to try to trip him up.

  1305. But my uncle,

  1306. being the strong

  1307. and heavyset man

  1308. that he was,

  1309. would never budge.

1310. And it drove me crazy

  1311. that every time

  1312. he wrestled,

  1313. he was laughing.

  1314. I'd be grunting

  1315. and sweating

  1316. and straining

  1317. and he'd be laughing.

  1318. He was laughing

  1319. because he was

  1320. having fun

  1321. and because he was

  1322. never at any point

  1323. threatened.

  1324. He was laughing

  1325. because it was amusing

  1326. to watch

  1327. me struggle.

  1328. In a similar way,

  1329. God cannot

  1330. be threatened.

  1331. He is the

  1332. sovereign

  1333. Lord.

  1334. The word

  1335. Lord

  1336. means

  1337. master.

  1338. And this is

  1339. highlighted further

  1340. by the repetition

  1341. of the word

  1342. servant,

  1343. which can also

  1344. be translated

  1345. slave

  1346. in verses 25,

  1347. 27,

  1348. 29,

  1349. and 30.

  1350. We are God's

  1351. servants.

  1352. King David

  1353. is God's

  1354. servant.

  1355. Jesus was his

  1356. holy servant,

  1357. the set-apart servant,

  1358. special servant

  1359. like no other.

  1360. God is the

  1361. sovereign

  1362. Lord,

  1363. the master,

  1364. and there is no

  1365. higher authority.

  1366. He is not

  1367. accountable to

  1368. anyone.

  1369. He is not

  1370. subject to

  1371. anyone.

  1372. He can do

  1373. as he pleases.

  1374. That's what it

  1375. means to be

  1376. sovereign.

  1377. And then

  1378. verses 27

  1379. to 28

  1380. explain the

  1381. significance

  1382. of this

  1383. reference to

  1384. Psalm 2.

  1385. For truly

  1386. in this city

  1387. there were

  1388. gathered together

  1389. against their

  1390. holy servant

  1391. Jesus,

  1392. whom you

  1393. anointed,

  1394. both Herod

  1395. and Pontius

  1396. Pilate,

  1397. along with

  1398. the Gentiles

  1399. and the

  1400. peoples of

  1401. Israel,

  1402. to do

  1403. whatever

  1404. your hand

  1405. and your

  1406. plan

  1407. had predestined

  1408. to take

  1409. place.

  1410. Jesus

  1411. is the

  1412. Lord's

  1413. anointed

  1414. king,

  1415. mentioned

  1416. in Psalm 2.

  1417. He is the

  1418. one whom

  1419. God has

  1420. appointed to

  1421. reign forever

  1422. over all

  1423. the people.

  1424. But the

  1425. kings of

  1426. the earth

  1427. set themselves

  1428. up against

  1429. him.

  1430. They gathered

  1431. against him,

  1432. both Herod

  1433. Antipas and

  1434. Pontius Pilate.

  1435. They represent

  1436. respectively the

  1437. Jewish ruler

  1438. and the

  1439. Gentile ruler.

  1440. Along with

  1441. the Gentiles

  1442. and the

  1443. peoples of

  1444. Israel,

  1445. including all

  1446. the Jewish

  1447. elders,

  1448. scribes,

  1449. high priests,

  1450. the Sanhedrin,

  1451. the Jewish

  1452. rulers,

  1453. were gathered

  1454. all conspiring

  1455. against the

  1456. Lord to

  1457. oppose Jesus

  1458. Christ.

  1459. But they

  1460. are saying,

  1461. the already

  1462. Christians are

  1463. saying,

  1464. it was all

  1465. in vain.

  1466. Because they

  1467. could not

  1468. stop what

  1469. the Lord,

  1470. what God's

  1471. hand and

  1472. plan had

  1473. predestined to

  1474. take place.

  1475. Verses 27 to

  1476. 28.

  1477. The reference

  1478. to Jesus as

  1479. God's servant

  1480. is an allusion

  1481. to Isaiah

  1482. 53,

  1483. where Jesus

  1484. is described

  1485. as the

  1486. suffering

  1487. servant of

  1488. the Lord

  1489. who bears

  1490. our

  1491. iniquities,

  1492. our sins

  1493. and transgressions

  1494. and dies

  1495. on the cross

  1496. in our

  1497. place so

  1498. that we

  1499. might be

  1500. forgiven and

  1501. redeemed from

  1502. our slavery

  1503. to sin.

  1504. And these

  1505. rulers of

  1506. the earth

  1507. thought that

  1508. they had

  1509. gotten the

  1510. better of

  1511. Jesus,

  1512. the Lord's

  1513. anointed,

  1514. by crucifying

  1515. him.

  1516. But God

  1517. raised him

  1518. from the

  1519. dead

  1520. triumphantly,

  1521. and Jesus

  1522. ascended into

  1523. the right hand

  1524. of God

  1525. the Father,

  1526. there to

  1527. reign forever.

  1528. And that's

  1529. the word,

  1530. that's that

  1531. good news of

  1532. Jesus and

  1533. his reign,

  1534. the salvation

  1535. that is found

  1536. in the death

  1537. and resurrection

  1538. of Jesus.

  1539. That is the

  1540. word that we

  1541. are to boldly

  1542. proclaim.

  1543. And it's

  1544. because we

  1545. are commissioned

  1546. by the

  1547. unimpeachable

  1548. sovereign Lord,

  1549. and because we

  1550. are commissioned

  1551. by the ascended

  1552. Lord Jesus who

  1553. reigns from the

  1554. right hand of

  1555. the Father,

  1556. we have

  1557. the authority

  1558. and the

  1559. warrant to

  1560. speak the

  1561. word with

  1562. boldness.

  1563. But where

  1564. does the

  1565. power to

  1566. speak the

  1567. word with

  1568. boldness come

  1569. from?

  1570. We've looked

  1571. at the

  1572. reason to

  1573. speak the

  1574. word with

  1575. boldness and

  1576. the authority

  1577. to speak the

  1578. word with

  1579. boldness,

  1580. but where

  1581. do we get

  1582. the power

  1583. to do so?

  1584. Authority is

  1585. the right

  1586. to do

  1587. something.

  1588. Power is

  1589. the might

  1590. to do

  1591. something.

  1592. authority

  1593. authorizes

  1594. you to

  1595. act in

  1596. a certain

  1597. capacity.

  1598. Power

  1599. enables

  1600. you or

  1601. empowers

  1602. you to

  1603. act in

  1604. a certain

  1605. capacity.

  1606. And we

  1607. see the

  1608. answer in

  1609. verses 29

  1610. to 31.

  1611. And now

  1612. Lord,

  1613. look upon

  1614. their threats

  1615. and grant

  1616. to your

  1617. servants to

  1618. continue to

  1619. speak your

  1620. word with

  1621. all boldness

  1622. while you

  1623. stretch out

  1624. your hand

  1625. to heal

  1626. and signs

  1627. and wonders

  1628. are performed

  1629. through the

  1630. name of your

  1631. holy servant

  1632. Jesus.

  1633. And when

  1634. they had

  1635. prayed,

  1636. the place

  1637. in which

  1638. they were

  1639. gathered

  1640. together

  1641. was shaken

  1642. and they

  1643. were all

  1644. filled with

  1645. the Holy

  1646. Spirit and

  1647. continued to

  1648. speak the

  1649. word of

  1650. God with

  1651. boldness.

  1652. This is a

  1653. very challenging

  1654. prayer and I

  1655. think if we

  1656. are honest

  1657. with ourselves,

  1658. we'd admit

  1659. that the way

  1660. these believers

  1661. pray is quite

  1662. different from

  1663. the way

  1664. modern day

  1665. Christians

  1666. pray.

  1667. Imagine that

  1668. you were

  1669. threatened

  1670. with bodily

  1671. harm and

  1672. charged to

  1673. never again

  1674. speak in the

  1675. name of the

  1676. Lord Jesus

  1677. by the very

  1678. people who

  1679. killed our

  1680. Lord Jesus

  1681. just over a

  1682. month or so

  1683. ago.

  1684. How would

  1685. you respond?

  1686. How would

  1687. you pray?

  1688. We might

  1689. pray for

  1690. God's

  1691. protection

  1692. protection

  1693. from their

  1694. threats.

  1695. We might

  1696. pray for

  1697. God's

  1698. wisdom

  1699. about how

  1700. we might

  1701. go about

  1702. preaching the

  1703. gospel in

  1704. light of

  1705. these new

  1706. threats.

  1707. We might

  1708. pray that

  1709. God would

  1710. change these

  1711. rulers'

  1712. hearts for

  1713. a change of

  1714. policy so

  1715. that one day

  1716. in the future

  1717. we might

  1718. speak God's

  1719. word.

  1720. But the

  1721. early church

  1722. doesn't do

  1723. that.

  1724. They do

  1725. not pray for

  1726. protection from

  1727. the threats of

  1728. the Sanhedrin.

  1729. They do not

  1730. pray that they

  1731. might be spared

  1732. from persecution

  1733. and execution.

  1734. They are

  1735. completely disposed

  1736. to the will of

  1737. God as his

  1738. servants or

  1739. better as his

  1740. slaves.

  1741. Instead they

  1742. pray that God

  1743. would help them

  1744. to continue to

  1745. speak God's

  1746. word with all

  1747. boldness.

  1748. they are

  1749. not concerned

  1750. for their

  1751. safety and

  1752. well-being but

  1753. for the

  1754. exaltation and

  1755. the spread of

  1756. the name of

  1757. the Lord

  1758. Jesus.

  1759. That's what

  1760. drives them.

  1761. And this is

  1762. why this

  1763. passage began

  1764. with the

  1765. mention of

  1766. Peter and

  1767. John's boldness

  1768. in verse 13

  1769. and it ends

  1770. with the

  1771. prayer for

  1772. continued

  1773. boldness in

  1774. verse 29

  1775. and 31.

  1776. God is

  1777. comforting us

  1778. and exhorting

  1779. us by the

  1780. hand of

  1781. Luke to

  1782. be bold in

  1783. our witness

  1784. for Jesus.

  1785. We don't

  1786. need to

  1787. concern

  1788. ourselves with

  1789. how people

  1790. respond to

  1791. our declaration

  1792. of Jesus.

  1793. Some people

  1794. will be

  1795. receptive.

  1796. Others will

  1797. be resistant.

  1798. Some people

  1799. will listen

  1800. and believe.

  1801. Others will

  1802. reject our

  1803. message.

  1804. Some people

  1805. will honor

  1806. us and

  1807. thank us.

  1808. Others will

  1809. revile us

  1810. and persecute

  1811. us.

  1812. But their

  1813. response is

  1814. not our

  1815. responsibility.

  1816. Our

  1817. responsibility is

  1818. simply to

  1819. speak the

  1820. word of

  1821. Christ.

  1822. To

  1823. proclaim the

  1824. gospel of

  1825. Jesus.

  1826. This is why

  1827. I don't want

  1828. any of you

  1829. to be

  1830. discouraged

  1831. when people

  1832. that you

  1833. share the

  1834. gospel with

  1835. don't turn

  1836. to Jesus

  1837. in faith.

  1838. God

  1839. if you

  1840. have

  1841. shared it

  1842. if you

  1843. have spoken

  1844. the word

  1845. then you

  1846. have been

  1847. a faithful

  1848. servant of

  1849. the Lord

  1850. Jesus.

  1851. Don't

  1852. count how

  1853. many people

  1854. have been

  1855. converted by

  1856. your witness

  1857. to Christ

  1858. for that's

  1859. not ultimately

  1860. in our

  1861. control.

  1862. Count

  1863. instead the

  1864. number of

  1865. times you

  1866. have shared

  1867. the good

  1868. news of

  1869. Jesus with

  1870. those who

  1871. do not

  1872. know him.

  1873. verses 29

  1874. and 30

  1875. compliment each

  1876. other.

  1877. It says

  1878. grant to

  1879. your servants

  1880. to continue

  1881. to speak

  1882. your word

  1883. with all

  1884. boldness

  1885. while you

  1886. stretch out

  1887. your hand

  1888. to heal

  1889. and signs

  1890. and wonders

  1891. are performed

  1892. through the

  1893. name of

  1894. your holy

  1895. servant

  1896. Jesus.

  1897. To put it

  1898. simply

  1899. we do

  1900. the speaking

  1901. God

  1902. does the

  1903. healing.

  1904. We do

  1905. the telling

  1906. God

  1907. does the

  1908. saving.

  1909. We do

  1910. the proclaiming

  1911. God

  1912. does

  1913. the

  1914. demonstrating.

  1915. Leave

  1916. God's

  1917. part

  1918. up to

  1919. God

  1920. and focus

  1921. on your

  1922. part.

  1923. The

  1924. signs and

  1925. wonders

  1926. that God

  1927. performs

  1928. are God's

  1929. sovereign

  1930. prerogative.

  1931. They are

  1932. not something

  1933. we can

  1934. manipulate

  1935. and control

  1936. with different

  1937. formulas

  1938. and rituals.

  1939. We can't

  1940. guarantee

  1941. God's

  1942. healing

  1943. by naming

  1944. it and

  1945. claiming

  1946. it.

  1947. We can't

  1948. demand

  1949. that God

  1950. heal

  1951. because we

  1952. have faith

  1953. or because we

  1954. have already

  1955. given thanks to

  1956. God ahead of

  1957. time for the

  1958. miracle.

  1959. Such

  1960. attitudes

  1961. betray human

  1962. pride and

  1963. presumption

  1964. rather than

  1965. humble

  1966. dependence on

  1967. God.

  1968. We can

  1969. in faith

  1970. ask God

  1971. to heal

  1972. certainly

  1973. and we

  1974. should

  1975. but we

  1976. must leave

  1977. the results

  1978. to God.

  1979. God

  1980. it is

  1981. God

  1982. who

  1983. stretches

  1984. out

  1985. his

  1986. hand

  1987. to

  1988. heal.

  1989. It is

  1990. our

  1991. task

  1992. to speak

  1993. God's

  1994. word

  1995. with all

  1996. boldness.

  1997. Let me

  1998. bring your

  1999. attention back

  2000. to the way

  2001. scripture is

  2002. described in

  2003. verse 25.

  2004. It says

  2005. that God

  2006. through the

  2007. mouth of

  2008. our father

  2009. David

  2010. said by

  2011. the Holy

  2012. Spirit.

  2013. What that

  2014. means is

  2015. this.

  2016. The author

  2017. of scripture

  2018. ultimately

  2019. is God.

  2020. The humans

  2021. who write

  2022. it or speak

  2023. it are

  2024. merely

  2025. instruments.

  2026. The means

  2027. through which

  2028. God speaks.

  2029. It is

  2030. therefore the

  2031. scriptures are

  2032. inspired by

  2033. God.

  2034. They are

  2035. inerrant.

  2036. They are

  2037. infallible.

  2038. It is what

  2039. God said

  2040. by the

  2041. Holy Spirit

  2042. and when

  2043. God speaks

  2044. things happen.

  2045. Creation

  2046. obeys

  2047. because he

  2048. is a

  2049. sovereign Lord

  2050. with all

  2051. authority in

  2052. heaven and

  2053. earth.

  2054. This is why

  2055. the gospel

  2056. is the

  2057. power of

  2058. God for

  2059. salvation to

  2060. everyone who

  2061. believes.

  2062. This is why

  2063. Paul says in

  2064. 1 Corinthians

  2065. chapter 2

  2066. verses 45

  2067. that his

  2068. speech and

  2069. his message

  2070. were not

  2071. in plausible

  2072. words of

  2073. wisdom but

  2074. in demonstration

  2075. of the spirit

  2076. and of power

  2077. so that your

  2078. faith might not

  2079. rest in the

  2080. wisdom of man

  2081. but in the

  2082. power of God.

  2083. Don't worry

  2084. about appealing

  2085. to the wisdom

  2086. of man.

  2087. don't worry

  2088. about being

  2089. eloquent

  2090. and powerful

  2091. in speech.

  2092. With the

  2093. ability you

  2094. have,

  2095. with the

  2096. knowledge you

  2097. have,

  2098. just speak

  2099. the word

  2100. and let

  2101. God verify

  2102. the proclamation

  2103. of his word

  2104. with his

  2105. power.

  2106. 19th century

  2107. pastor and

  2108. preacher

  2109. Charles Spurgeon

  2110. once said

  2111. this,

  2112. there seems

  2113. to me to

  2114. have been

  2115. twice as

  2116. much done

  2117. in some

  2118. ages in

  2119. defending the

  2120. Bible as

  2121. in expounding

  2122. it.

  2123. But if the

  2124. whole of our

  2125. strength shall

  2126. henceforth go

  2127. to the exposition

  2128. and spreading

  2129. of it,

  2130. we may leave

  2131. it pretty much

  2132. to defend

  2133. itself.

  2134. I do not

  2135. know whether

  2136. you see

  2137. that lion.

  2138. It is very

  2139. distinctly before

  2140. my eyes.

  2141. A number of

  2142. persons advance

  2143. to attack

  2144. him,

  2145. while a host

  2146. of us would

  2147. defend him.

  2148. Pardon me

  2149. if I offer a

  2150. quiet suggestion.

  2151. Open the

  2152. door and let

  2153. the lion

  2154. out.

  2155. He will take

  2156. care of

  2157. himself.

  2158. Why?

  2159. They are

  2160. gone.

  2161. He no sooner

  2162. goes forth in

  2163. his strength

  2164. than his

  2165. assailants flee.

  2166. The way to

  2167. meet infidelity

  2168. is to spread

  2169. the Bible.

  2170. The answer

  2171. to every

  2172. objection

  2173. against the

  2174. Bible is

  2175. the Bible.

  2176. Let the

  2177. word of God

  2178. out.

  2179. Let the

  2180. lion

  2181. demonstrate

  2182. his power.

  2183. Speak the

  2184. word with

  2185. boldness and

  2186. let God

  2187. work in

  2188. power through

  2189. it.

  2190. There are

  2191. a couple

  2192. of things

  2193. that we

  2194. can identify

  2195. as the

  2196. source of

  2197. this boldness

  2198. highlighted in

  2199. this last

  2200. section.

  2201. First,

  2202. there is a

  2203. contrast between

  2204. the gathering

  2205. of the

  2206. enemies of

  2207. God and

  2208. the gathering

  2209. of God's

  2210. servants.

  2211. Verse 26,

  2212. that the king

  2213. says,

  2214. the kings of

  2215. the earth

  2216. set themselves

  2217. and the

  2218. rulers were

  2219. gathered

  2220. together

  2221. against the

  2222. Lord and

  2223. against his

  2224. anointed.

  2225. Verse 27

  2226. says,

  2227. for truly in

  2228. this city

  2229. were gathered

  2230. together,

  2231. against your

  2232. holy servant

  2233. Jesus,

  2234. both Herod

  2235. and Pontius

  2236. Pilate,

  2237. along with the

  2238. Gentiles and

  2239. the peoples

  2240. of Israel.

  2241. But contrasted

  2242. with these

  2243. unholy

  2244. gatherings

  2245. is the

  2246. gathering of

  2247. the people

  2248. of God.

  2249. He says in

  2250. verse 31,

  2251. and when they

  2252. had prayed,

  2253. the place in

  2254. which they

  2255. were gathered

  2256. together was

  2257. shaken.

  2258. there's a

  2259. physical

  2260. manifestation

  2261. of the

  2262. power of

  2263. the Holy

  2264. Spirit

  2265. where his

  2266. people are

  2267. gathered

  2268. together.

  2269. Brothers

  2270. and sisters,

  2271. the enemies

  2272. of God

  2273. have gathered

  2274. themselves

  2275. together.

  2276. The world

  2277. and the

  2278. devil have

  2279. conspired

  2280. against the

  2281. Lord and

  2282. his anointed

  2283. to snuff

  2284. out the

  2285. name of

  2286. Jesus from

  2287. under

  2288. heaven.

  2289. They

  2290. systematically

  2291. undermine

  2292. and discredit

  2293. the name

  2294. of Jesus.

  2295. They oppose

  2296. those who

  2297. proclaim the

  2298. name of

  2299. Jesus.

  2300. And it is

  2301. for that

  2302. reason,

  2303. it's all

  2304. the more

  2305. important that

  2306. we gather

  2307. together in

  2308. the name

  2309. of Jesus.

  2310. In a

  2311. football game,

  2312. before the

  2313. players go

  2314. out to face

  2315. their opponents,

  2316. they gather

  2317. together in

  2318. a huddle to

  2319. face their

  2320. friends, to

  2321. plan together,

  2322. to encourage

  2323. and exhort

  2324. one another,

  2325. so that

  2326. they might

  2327. make a

  2328. concerted

  2329. push against

  2330. their opponents.

  2331. Remember

  2332. verse 23,

  2333. when Peter

  2334. and John

  2335. were released,

  2336. where did

  2337. they go?

  2338. They went

  2339. to their

  2340. friends.

  2341. They went

  2342. to their

  2343. own.

  2344. When we

  2345. are bombarded

  2346. with counter

  2347. messaging and

  2348. pressure from

  2349. the world,

  2350. day in and

  2351. day out,

  2352. when we are

  2353. faced with

  2354. innumerable

  2355. temptations,

  2356. day in and

  2357. day out,

  2358. we need the

  2359. body of Christ

  2360. to remind us

  2361. we believe

  2362. in God,

  2363. the Father

  2364. Almighty,

  2365. creator of

  2366. heaven and

  2367. earth.

  2368. We believe

  2369. in Jesus

  2370. Christ,

  2371. his only

  2372. son,

  2373. our Lord.

  2374. We believe

  2375. in the

  2376. Holy Spirit,

  2377. the holy

  2378. universal

  2379. church,

  2380. the communion

  2381. of saints,

  2382. the forgiveness

  2383. of sins,

  2384. the resurrection

  2385. of the body,

  2386. and the life

  2387. everlasting.

  2388. God's

  2389. God's

  2390. God's

  2391. God's

  2392. word read

  2393. and preached,

  2394. when we sing

  2395. God's word to

  2396. one another,

  2397. when we partake

  2398. in God's

  2399. word embodied

  2400. in the

  2401. sacraments,

  2402. we are

  2403. renewed,

  2404. recalibrated,

  2405. reminded.

  2406. It is no

  2407. surprise then

  2408. that Ephesians

  2409. 5, 18 to

  2410. 20 command us

  2411. to be filled

  2412. with the

  2413. Spirit by

  2414. addressing one

  2415. another in

  2416. psalms and hymns

  2417. of spiritual

  2418. songs,

  2419. singing and

  2420. making melody

  2421. to the

  2422. Lord with

  2423. your heart,

  2424. giving thanks

  2425. always and

  2426. for everything

  2427. to God the

  2428. Father in

  2429. the name of

  2430. our Lord

  2431. Jesus,

  2432. submitting to

  2433. one another

  2434. out of

  2435. reverence for

  2436. Christ.

  2437. It's when we

  2438. are addressing

  2439. one another

  2440. with the

  2441. word of

  2442. Christ,

  2443. when we

  2444. are giving

  2445. thanks to

  2446. God together,

  2447. when we

  2448. are submitting

  2449. to each

  2450. other in

  2451. humility and

  2452. mutual

  2453. servanthood,

  2454. that we are

  2455. filled with

  2456. the Spirit

  2457. of God.

  2458. And that

  2459. leads me to

  2460. the ultimate

  2461. source of

  2462. power for

  2463. bold witness.

  2464. It says in

  2465. verse 31,

  2466. And when they

  2467. had prayed,

  2468. the place in

  2469. which they

  2470. were gathered

  2471. together was

  2472. shaken,

  2473. and they

  2474. were all

  2475. filled with

  2476. the Holy

  2477. Spirit and

  2478. continued to

  2479. speak the

  2480. word of

  2481. God with

  2482. boldness.

  2483. The power

  2484. to speak the

  2485. word with

  2486. boldness comes

  2487. from the

  2488. filling of

  2489. the Holy

  2490. Spirit,

  2491. which in

  2492. turn comes

  2493. through the

  2494. means of

  2495. prayer.

  2496. If we

  2497. want to

  2498. be bold,

  2499. we must

  2500. be filled

  2501. with the

  2502. Spirit,

  2503. possessed

  2504. and controlled

  2505. by the

  2506. Spirit,

  2507. and this

  2508. boldness is

  2509. not something

  2510. that we can

  2511. conjure up

  2512. with our

  2513. sheer willpower.

  2514. This

  2515. boldness that

  2516. Scripture speaks

  2517. of is not a

  2518. force of

  2519. personality.

  2520. It's something

  2521. that is

  2522. supernatural in

  2523. its origin.

  2524. It's something

  2525. that comes

  2526. from the

  2527. Holy Spirit.

  2528. J.

  2529. Edwin

  2530. Orr,

  2531. one of the

  2532. great historians

  2533. of Christian

  2534. revival,

  2535. says this,

  2536. no great

  2537. spiritual

  2538. awakening has

  2539. begun anywhere

  2540. in the world

  2541. apart from

  2542. united prayer.

  2543. We see

  2544. again and

  2545. again throughout

  2546. the book of

  2547. Acts that

  2548. the early

  2549. church's

  2550. success in

  2551. the spread

  2552. of the

  2553. gospel had

  2554. nothing to

  2555. do with

  2556. brilliant

  2557. human

  2558. strategy,

  2559. well-packaged

  2560. programs,

  2561. or sociological

  2562. and marketing

  2563. principles.

  2564. It had

  2565. everything to

  2566. do with

  2567. speaking God's

  2568. word in the

  2569. power of the

  2570. Holy Spirit

  2571. and the

  2572. appropriation of

  2573. that Spirit's

  2574. power through

  2575. prayer.

  2576. prayer.

  2577. It's good to

  2578. pray for the

  2579. conversion of

  2580. our friends

  2581. and neighbors,

  2582. but we also

  2583. need to follow

  2584. Apostle Paul's

  2585. example in

  2586. Ephesians 6,

  2587. 17 to 20,

  2588. where he tells

  2589. us to take

  2590. the sword of

  2591. the Spirit,

  2592. which is the

  2593. Word of God,

  2594. praying at

  2595. all times in

  2596. the Spirit,

  2597. with all

  2598. prayer and

  2599. supplication.

  2600. To that

  2601. end,

  2602. keep alert

  2603. with all

  2604. perseverance,

  2605. making

  2606. supplication

  2607. or prayer

  2608. for all

  2609. the saints,

  2610. and also

  2611. for me,

  2612. that words

  2613. may be

  2614. given to

  2615. me in

  2616. opening my

  2617. mouth boldly

  2618. to proclaim

  2619. the mystery

  2620. of the

  2621. gospel,

  2622. for which I

  2623. am an

  2624. ambassador in

  2625. chains,

  2626. that I

  2627. may declare

  2628. it boldly

  2629. as I

  2630. ought to

  2631. speak.

  2632. We are

  2633. to wield

  2634. the sword

  2635. of the

  2636. Spirit,

  2637. which is

  2638. the Word

  2639. of God,

  2640. and we

  2641. do that

  2642. by praying

  2643. at all

  2644. times in

  2645. the Spirit.

  2646. This is

  2647. why we

  2648. must pray

  2649. that we

  2650. might boldly

  2651. proclaim the

  2652. gospel.

  2653. That's one

  2654. simple reason

  2655. why the

  2656. early church

  2657. was bold,

  2658. that they

  2659. prayed for

  2660. boldness.

  2661. Prayer is

  2662. not something

  2663. that we

  2664. add on at

  2665. the end

  2666. of our

  2667. important

  2668. activities.

  2669. It is

  2670. one of

  2671. our most

  2672. important

  2673. activities,

  2674. because it

  2675. helps us

  2676. realize that

  2677. the most

  2678. important agent

  2679. the actor

  2680. in our

  2681. ministry

  2682. is not

  2683. us,

  2684. but God.

  2685. So let's

  2686. let God

  2687. do His

  2688. work,

  2689. and let's

  2690. be faithful

  2691. to do

  2692. our part

  2693. in speaking

  2694. the Word

  2695. of God

  2696. with boldness,

  2697. despite

  2698. opposition

  2699. from the

  2700. powers that

  2701. be.

  2702. Please take

  2703. a moment

  2704. now to

  2705. think about

  2706. that.

  2707. how is

  2708. God

  2709. convicting

  2710. you,

  2711. calling you

  2712. to respond

  2713. to this

  2714. message?

  2715. Take a

  2716. moment to

  2717. think about

  2718. it in

  2719. silence,

  2720. and then

  2721. we're going

  2722. to respond

  2723. together

  2724. corporately

  2725. by praying.

  2726. on.

  2727. ch
