  1. Acts 4, 32.

  2. Now the full number of those who believed were of one heart and soul.

  3. And no one said that any of the things that belonged to him was his own,

  4. but they had everything in common.

  5. And with great power, the apostles were giving their testimony

  6. to the resurrection of the Lord Jesus.

  7. And great grace was upon them all.

  8. There was not a needy person among them,

  9. for as many as were owners of lands or houses sold them

  10. and brought the proceeds of what was sold

  11. and laid it all at the apostles' feet.

  12. And it was distributed to each as any had need.

  13. Thus Joseph, who was also called by the apostles Barnabas,

  14. which means son of encouragement, a Levite, a native of Cyprus,

  15. sold a field that belonged to him and brought the money

  16. and laid it at the apostles' feet.

  17. But a man named Ananias with his wife Sapphira

  18. sold a piece of property.

  19. And with his wife's knowledge, he kept back for himself

  20. some of the proceeds and brought only a part of it

  21. and laid it at the apostles' feet.

  22. But Peter said,

  23. Ananias, why has Satan filled your heart

  24. to lie to the Holy Spirit

  25. and to keep back for yourself part of the proceeds of the land?

  26. While it remained unsold, did it not remain your own?

  27. And after it was sold, was it not at your disposal?

  28. Why is it that you have contrived this deed in your heart?

  29. You have not lied to men, but to God.

  30. When Ananias heard these words,

  31. he fell down and breathed his last.

  32. And great fear came upon all who heard of it.

  33. The young man rose and wrapped him up

  34. and carried him out and buried him.

  35. After an interval of about three hours,

  36. his wife came in, not knowing what had happened.

  37. And Peter said to her,

  38. Tell me whether you sold the land for so much.

  39. And she said,

  40. Yes, for so much.

  41. But Peter said to her,

  42. How is it that you have agreed together

  43. to test the Spirit of the Lord?

  44. Behold, the feet of those who have buried your husband

  45. are at the door and they will carry you out.

  46. Immediately she fell down at his feet

  47. and breathed her last.

  48. When the young men came in,

  49. they found her dead.

  50. And they carried her out

  51. and buried her beside her husband.

  52. And great fear came upon the whole church

  53. and upon all who heard these things.

  54. This is God's holy and authoritative word.

  55. Troy Polamalu is a two-time Super Bowl champion

  56. with the Pittsburgh Steelers.

  57. He was inducted into the Football Hall of Fame last year.

  58. And he is a vocal Christian

  59. who has spoken often of how the humility and sacrifice

  60. that the Christian life requires

  61. has helped him in his football career.

  62. And he says that football likewise requires

  63. a selflessness in the name of greater good.

  64. When he was voted the most valuable player

  65. on his team one year,

  66. he said, quote,

  67. I've never been a fan of individual awards

  68. because football is such a team sport.

  69. There's so many things that goes into making plays.

  70. It's about teammates trusting one another

  71. and working together.

  72. When an individual plays selfishly

  73. in an attempt to keep the spotlight on himself,

  74. the team inevitably suffers.

  75. That's why there are players in various team sports

  76. who are exceptionally talented

  77. and have stellar individual stats,

  78. and yet when you add them to a new team,

  79. that team curiously gets worse, not better.

  80. That's because these players lift themselves up

  81. at the expense of others

  82. rather than humbling themselves

  83. and making personal sacrifices

  84. in the service of the team.

  85. In Acts 4, 32 to 5, 11,

  86. we see a similar dynamic in play.

  87. We are given a positive example of Barnabas

  88. who makes personal sacrifices

  89. for the sake of the church,

  90. and we're also given a negative example

  91. of Ananias and Sapphira

  92. who seek to elevate their personal standing

  93. within the church using deceit.

  94. And the main point of this passage

  95. is that the filling of the Holy Spirit

  96. enables the church to bear witness to Jesus

  97. with one heart and soul.

  98. We're going to first look at the unity of the church

  99. filled by the Spirit,

  100. and then we're going to look at the duplicity

  101. of those filled by Satan.

  102. First, we see a wonderful picture

  103. of the unity of the church filled by the Spirit.

  104. It says in verse 32,

  105. Now the full number of those who believe

  106. were of one heart and soul.

  107. The full number of believers

  108. refers to the multitude.

  109. It's the same word that's sometimes translated

  110. congregation.

  111. It's a reference to the gathered church.

  112. And they were of one heart and one soul.

  113. The many, the multitude, were one.

  114. The heart, in Jewish understanding,

  115. is the effective center of a person,

  116. the seed of one's thoughts,

  117. the seed of one's emotions, intentions.

  118. Proverbs chapter 4, verse 23,

    Proverbs 4:23

  119. says that from the heart flows the springs of life.

  120. The heart, in other words,

  121. is the source of our words and actions,

  122. all that we do.

  123. Similarly, the soul, in Jewish understanding,

  124. refers to the life and vitality of a person.

  125. Together, the words heart and soul

  126. refer to the totality of your inner self.

  127. When you put your heart into something,

  128. when you put your heart and soul into something,

  129. it doesn't mean that you're just putting

  130. a part of yourself into it.

  131. It means you're putting all of yourself into it.

  132. So likewise, the first Christians

  133. were of one heart and soul.

  134. They were united in their purposes and priorities.

  135. They were of one mind.

  136. And one tangible evidence of this unity

  137. was that they shared what belonged to them,

  138. their possessions.

  139. It says in verse 32,

  140. And no one said that any of the things

  141. that belonged to him was his own,

  142. but they had everything in common.

  143. The full number was one,

  144. and no one selfishly refused to share

  145. what belonged to him or her.

  146. What was one's own was held in common.

  147. So we could call this common ownership.

  148. But this is not a socialistic community

  149. where private ownership is abolished.

  150. People still own things,

  151. and those things are at their disposal,

  152. as we will see clearly in Peter's conversation with Ananias.

  153. But nobody insists that his things are his own.

  154. Meaning he doesn't keep those things to himself,

  155. but freely shares them voluntarily.

  156. So perhaps common use is a more accurate description

  157. than common ownership of property.

  158. I've personally seen many of you do this

  159. for one person or another in our church,

  160. whether it's sharing or giving away

  161. an unused phone or headphones

  162. or to someone who had need of it,

  163. or whether it's sharing your drill,

  164. your tent,

  165. your car,

  166. or even your house

  167. with someone who has need.

  168. So the early church likewise shared everything in common.

  169. They also had a common message.

  170. Verse 33 says,

  171. And with great power the apostles were giving their testimony

  172. to the resurrection of the Lord Jesus,

  173. and great grace was upon them all.

  174. This is the common mission that God's people were driven by,

  175. to give their testimony to the resurrection of the Lord Jesus.

  176. Bearing witness to the fact that Jesus died for our sins

  177. and was raised from the dead

  178. and now reigns at the right hand of the Heavenly Father.

  179. That's the church's mission.

  180. We must never lose sight of that mission.

  181. In the book entitled Mission Drift,

  182. The Unspoken Crisis Facing Leaders, Charities, and Churches,

  183. Peter Greer and Chris Horst

  184. contrast originally Christian organizations

  185. that drifted from their mission.

  186. Like Harvard University,

  187. Child Fund,

  188. and YMCA.

  189. To organizations that stayed true

  190. to their explicitly Christian mission and values.

  191. Like Taylor University,

  192. and Compassion International.

  193. And they argue that this mission drift

  194. happens slowly and gradually,

  195. almost imperceptibly.

  196. They call it in one of their chapters,

  197. Death by Minnows.

  198. They write,

  199. quote,

  200. Too often the passions of the first generation

  201. become the preferences of the second

  202. and are irrelevant to the third generation.

  203. The authors of that book originally set out,

  204. according to their own testimony,

  205. to write the book thinking that mission drift

  206. was an organizational issue.

  207. But in the course of their research and writing,

  208. they changed their hypothesis

  209. and concluded that the mission drift

  210. is not an organizational problem,

  211. but a human problem.

  212. Quote,

  213. Individuals foiled by pride and sin

  214. and allured by success.

  215. They're the ones who drive mission drift.

  216. They continue,

  217. quote,

  218. Pride leads us to adopt

  219. the wrong definition of success.

  220. When we begin to see our priority

  221. as a growing ministry

  222. instead of a faithful one,

  223. we sow the seeds of drift.

  224. As we go through the book of Acts

  225. and as we've seen already

  226. in the first four chapters,

  227. it's tempting to try to replicate

  228. the explosive growth

  229. and visible success

  230. of the early church.

  231. It's tempting to try to replicate

  232. that using the various techniques

  233. and strategies

  234. and values of the modern world,

  235. but instead of fixating

  236. on what works

  237. from our limited human perspective,

  238. we need to focus on

  239. what the Lord has commanded us.

  240. The Lord has commanded us

  241. to bear witness to His life

  242. and death and resurrection,

  243. to make disciples of all nations.

  244. Our goal isn't a large,

  245. successful church,

  246. but a church that faithfully

  247. bears witness to Jesus.

  248. The church in Acts 4

  249. did not lose sight of this mission,

  250. and their ministry was attended,

  251. it says,

  252. with great power

  253. and great grace,

  254. according to verse 33.

  255. The power is the power

  256. of the Holy Spirit,

  257. which has been mentioned

  258. numerous times in Acts,

  259. and it refers to the power

  260. with which God performed

  261. many miracles through the apostles

  262. to corroborate the message

  263. that they were proclaiming,

  264. the gospel that they were proclaiming.

  265. The grace similarly refers

  266. to the grace of God.

  267. In Acts chapter 11,

    Acts 11:21–23

  268. verse 21 to 23,

  269. it says that,

  270. So this is the grace of God

  271. to see what was happening,

  272. and it says that,

  273. when he came and saw the grace of God,

  274. he was glad,

  275. and he exhorted them all

  276. to remain faithful to the Lord

  277. with steadfast purpose.

  278. So this is the grace of God

  279. that is in view

  280. when it says here in Acts 4.33

  281. that grace,

  282. great grace was upon them all.

  283. Grace is the favor of God.

  284. It is his favorable disposition

  285. and blessing toward his people,

  286. which is evidenced in many people

  287. turning to faith in the Lord.

  288. Whenever the church experiences

  289. great revival in history,

  290. when the gospel is boldly proclaimed

  291. and many people repent of their sins

  292. and believe in Jesus

  293. and God's power is displayed

  294. in signs and wonders,

  295. whenever such revivals break out in history,

  296. it's always the result of great power

  297. and great grace of God.

  298. In other words,

  299. the source of such revival

  300. is the filling of the Holy Spirit.

  301. Remember what we learned

  302. from the preceding passage last week.

  303. It said in Acts 4.31,

  304. and when they had prayed,

  305. the place in which they were gathered together

  306. was shaken,

  307. and they were all filled

  308. with the Holy Spirit

  309. and continued to speak

  310. the Word of God with boldness.

  311. The ongoing revival we see here

  312. in verses 32 to 37

  313. is a result of that filling

  314. of the Holy Spirit

  315. in response to the concerted prayers

  316. of the church.

  317. On a static, you know,

  318. pond,

  319. boats can go all kinds of directions, right?

  320. Depending on which way people are rowing,

  321. depending on which direction

  322. the wind is blowing.

  323. People are all doing their own thing

  324. on such a pond.

  325. But as soon as you put those boats down

  326. on the rapids,

  327. they all start going down

  328. in the same direction

  329. in the irresistible flow of the river.

  330. In the same way,

  331. people who are doing different things

  332. and living for different reasons,

  333. when they come under

  334. the mighty torrent of the Holy Spirit,

  335. they all start flowing

  336. in the same direction.

  337. The many become one.

  338. And that's what's happened here.

  339. And once again,

  340. Luke tells us in verses 34 to 35,

  341. one obvious evidence of this unity

  342. is the way they generously

  343. and sacrificially give to one another.

  344. Luke returns to this theme

  345. because he wants to give us

  346. two examples of this,

  347. specific examples of this.

  348. We saw earlier that they share

  349. the things that they owned,

  350. but that's not all they did.

  351. They also sold the things

  352. that they owned

  353. to give away the proceeds

  354. to their Christian brothers and sisters

  355. who needed them.

  356. So he says in verses 34 and 35,

  357. there was not a needy person among them,

  358. for as many as were owners

  359. of lands or houses

  360. sold them and brought the proceeds

  361. of what was sold

  362. and laid it at the apostles' feet.

  363. And it was distributed to each

  364. as any had need.

  365. There was no needy person.

  366. Why?

  367. For as many as were owners

  368. of lands or houses

  369. sold them and gave the proceeds

  370. to distribute it to each

  371. as any had need.

  372. Any who had need

  373. was satisfied

  374. because the many who had

  375. generously gave.

  376. Whenever there was someone with need,

  377. someone with means

  378. rose to meet that need.

  379. The landowners and homeowners

  380. did not insist on keeping

  381. their properties to themselves.

  382. They could have said,

  383. well, do you know how hard

  384. I work to save up for this house?

  385. Do you know how many years

  386. of backbreaking labor

  387. it took me to buy

  388. this parcel of land?

  389. They were entitled to that.

  390. The land was deeded

  391. to their name.

  392. But instead of selfishly

  393. insisting on their right,

  394. they sacrificially surrendered

  395. their right for the sake

  396. of their fellow church members.

  397. I said earlier

  398. that this is not

  399. a socialistic community

  400. where private ownership

  401. is abolished.

  402. But it's also true

  403. that this is not

  404. a capitalistic community

  405. where private ownership

  406. is prized and guarded

  407. and where the desire

  408. to increase one's own capital

  409. governs all commercial dealings.

  410. It's like comparing

  411. apples and oranges

  412. because the early church

  413. functioned

  414. not as an economy

  415. but as a family.

  416. The clause,

  417. there was not

  418. a needy person among them

  419. echoes an Old Testament

  420. ideal within the family of God.

  421. The word needy

  422. occurs only once

  423. in the entire New Testament

  424. right here.

  425. And it's the same word

  426. that occurs

  427. in the ancient Greek translation

  428. of Deuteronomy chapter 15

    Deuteronomy 15:4

  429. verse 4

  430. where it says,

  431. but there will be

  432. no needy person

  433. among you.

  434. Acts 4.34

  435. is a fulfillment

  436. of that word.

  437. This command

  438. in Deuteronomy

  439. is given in the context

  440. of directions

  441. about the sabbatical year,

  442. a year of rest.

  443. Jewish lenders

  444. were permitted

  445. to exact

  446. what was owed to them

  447. from their borrowers

  448. if those borrowers

  449. were foreigners.

  450. However,

  451. they were forbidden

  452. from exacting

  453. what was owed to them

  454. from their fellow Jews.

  455. And when the sabbath year

  456. came,

  457. the seventh year

  458. of rest came,

  459. they were commanded

  460. to forgive

  461. any outstanding loan

  462. of their Jewish brethren.

  463. So it says

  464. in Deuteronomy 15

    Deuteronomy 15:2

  465. verse 2,

  466. every creditor

  467. shall release

  468. what he has lent

  469. to his neighbor.

  470. He shall not exact it

  471. of his neighbor,

  472. his brother,

  473. because the Lord's release

  474. has been proclaimed.

  475. This is how family works.

  476. I recently received

  477. a check

  478. for serving

  479. on jury duty.

  480. It's not much

  481. and the tax

  482. is already taken out.

  483. But it's money

  484. that I earned

  485. with the work

  486. that I did

  487. and the check

  488. had my name on it.

  489. But it really

  490. doesn't matter

  491. in the end

  492. because it all goes

  493. into the family

  494. bank account.

  495. In fact,

  496. I told Hannah

  497. that I'm giving

  498. my jury check

  499. to her

  500. to use as she desires

  501. since she had to work

  502. extra hard at home

  503. to make sure

  504. I can go to jury duty

  505. and then do church work

  506. at night

  507. and weekends

  508. because I wouldn't have

  509. been able to serve

  510. on that jury

  511. if it weren't for her.

  512. Some of the money

  513. undoubtedly

  514. will end up

  515. going to our kids

  516. who are net negative

  517. on our account.

  518. They don't contribute

  519. to our family's earning

  520. in any way.

  521. In fact,

  522. they're quite a drain.

  523. But that's how

  524. families work.

  525. They take care

  526. of each other's needs.

  527. They share

  528. what belongs

  529. to them

  530. with one another.

  531. So it is

  532. within the family

  533. of God.

  534. The church

  535. is the family

  536. of God.

  537. Church is not

  538. a worship service

  539. that you attend

  540. or a building

  541. that you enter into.

  542. it's a congregation

  543. of believers

  544. as it says

  545. in chapter 4

  546. verse 32.

  547. The full number

  548. or congregation

  549. the multitude

  550. of those who believed

  551. were of one heart

  552. and soul.

  553. The church

  554. is a gathering

  555. of people

  556. a community

  557. of followers

  558. of Jesus Christ

  559. who meet together

  560. for prayer

  561. and teaching

  562. and the breaking

  563. of bread

  564. who live

  565. closely enough

  566. to know

  567. each other's needs

  568. and who love

  569. each other enough

  570. to meet

  571. those needs

  572. as they arise.

  573. And I want to commend

  574. many of you

  575. who have done this

  576. within our church

  577. as well.

  578. Some of you

  579. have used

  580. your own money

  581. to pay

  582. for another member's

  583. medical expense

  584. or housing expense.

  585. Note that

  586. at this point

  587. in the book of Acts

  588. the church

  589. did not have

  590. its formal structure

  591. with the elders

  592. and the deacons

  593. as specified

  594. in 1 Timothy chapter 3.

    1 Timothy 3 chapter mention

  595. At this point

  596. there's still

  597. only one church

  598. in all the world

  599. the church

  600. in Jerusalem

  601. and the apostles

  602. functioned

  603. as the elders

  604. of that church.

  605. This is why

  606. people bring

  607. the proceeds

  608. of what was sold

  609. and laid

  610. at the apostles' feet.

  611. The apostles

  612. being leaders

  613. of the church

  614. had a fuller picture

  615. of the various

  616. needs within the church

  617. and by having them

  618. coordinate

  619. the distribution

  620. of funds

  621. they made sure

  622. that every need

  623. was met

  624. and that there

  625. wasn't any

  626. reduplication

  627. of efforts

  628. with several people

  629. trying to meet

  630. the same need

  631. not knowing

  632. that it was already met.

  633. This is what

  634. we do

  635. as a local church

  636. as well

  637. when we take up

  638. offerings

  639. for a collective fund.

  640. It's what we did

  641. at our members meeting

  642. last Sunday

  643. when we established

  644. the benevolence fund

  645. for future deacons

  646. to allocate

  647. to those who are in need.

  648. Having made his point

  649. about the unity

  650. of the church

  651. and how they met

  652. one another's needs

  653. Luke now gives us

  654. two specific examples

  655. a positive one

  656. and a negative one.

  657. We see the positive example

  658. in verses 36 to 37.

  659. Thus Joseph

  660. who was also called

  661. by the apostles

  662. Barnabas

  663. which means

  664. son of encouragement

  665. a Levite

  666. a native of Cyprus

  667. sold a field

  668. that belonged to him

  669. and brought the money

  670. and laid it

  671. at the apostles feet.

  672. This brother's name

  673. was Joseph

  674. but we know him

  675. by his more famous nickname

  676. which the apostles

  677. called him by

  678. Barnabas

  679. which means

  680. son of encouragement.

  681. He's one of the most

  682. prominent believers

  683. in the book of Acts.

  684. His name occurs

  685. again and again

  686. and we'll encounter him

  687. many times

  688. and it's not surprising

  689. for that reason

  690. that the apostles

  691. had a special nickname

  692. for him.

  693. And what a great nickname

  694. son of encouragement.

  695. To refer to someone

  696. as a son of something

  697. is an idiomatic way

  698. in Hebrew

  699. to describe

  700. the character

  701. of a person

  702. and because

  703. the Greek New Testament

  704. is influenced

  705. written by Jews

  706. it reflects that influence.

  707. So a son of

  708. Ephesians 5, 6

  709. calls disobedient people

  710. son of disobedience.

  711. So then

  712. a son of encouragement

  713. is someone

  714. who is often

  715. given toward

  716. encouraging others.

  717. If encouragement

  718. had a son

  719. it would look like

  720. Barnabas.

  721. The word encouragement

  722. means to exhort

  723. and embolden

  724. another person

  725. in his or her belief

  726. or course of action.

  727. The same word

  728. is used

  729. later in chapter 9

  730. verse 31

  731. to refer to the comfort

  732. of the Holy Spirit.

  733. He's a son

  734. who gives comfort

  735. to others

  736. brings encouragement

  737. to others.

  738. We see him

  739. doing this often

  740. throughout the book of Acts.

  741. When Paul

  742. returned to Jerusalem

  743. after his conversion

  744. the apostles

  745. were wary of him

  746. knowing his reputation

  747. as a fierce

  748. persecutor

  749. of the church.

  750. However,

  751. it's Barnabas

  752. who personally

  753. takes Paul

  754. by his hand

  755. and introduces him

  756. to the apostles

  757. assuring them

  758. that he has

  759. genuinely converted

  760. and that he's safe.

  761. In Acts chapter 9

    Acts 9:27

  762. verse 27

  763. When a new church

  764. begins to take

  765. shape in Antioch

  766. the apostles

  767. send who?

  768. Barnabas.

  769. They're to encourage

  770. them and build them up.

  771. Acts 11

  772. 22-26

  773. And then

  774. when those same

  775. Christians in Antioch

  776. hear a prophecy

  777. that anticipates

  778. a famine

  779. throughout Judea

  780. they send relief

  781. by the hand

  782. of Barnabas.

  783. When Paul

  784. insists on not

  785. taking John Mark

  786. along with him

  787. on their missionary

  788. journey

  789. being unwilling

  790. to give Mark

  791. a second chance

  792. because Mark

  793. had deserted them

  794. in one leg

  795. of the journey

  796. previously

  797. it's Barnabas

  798. who insists

  799. on giving Mark

  800. a second chance

  801. is in Acts chapter 15

    Acts 15:37–40

  802. verse 37-40

  803. Paul virtually admits

  804. later in his life

  805. that Barnabas was right

  806. because in 2 Timothy 4-11

  807. he asks Timothy

  808. to get Mark

  809. and bring him with you

  810. for he's very useful

  811. to me in my ministry.

  812. So Joseph

  813. was a godly man

  814. who was often

  815. encouraging other believers

  816. and building up the church

  817. so he was nicknamed

  818. Barnabas

  819. and fittingly

  820. Barnabas

  821. sold a field

  822. that belonged to him

  823. and brought the money

  824. to and laid it

  825. at the apostles' feet

  826. so that it might be used

  827. to meet the needs

  828. of the saints.

  829. While Levites

  830. were not given

  831. an inheritance

  832. in the land of Israel

  833. by this time

  834. Israel was not

  835. a theocracy

  836. governed by

  837. the Mosaic law

  838. rather they were

  839. a conquered nation

  840. subjects of the Roman Empire

  841. and so under

  842. these changed circumstances

  843. it appears

  844. Levites also owned land.

  845. So Barnabas

  846. a Levite

  847. sold his land

  848. and donated

  849. it to the church.

  850. But lest you think

  851. that this is

  852. just an idealized

  853. depiction

  854. of the early church

  855. Luke gives us

  856. a negative example

  857. as well.

  858. The early church

  859. was not perfect.

  860. Wherever the spirit

  861. of God

  862. is powerfully at work

  863. Satan always tries

  864. to do his worst.

  865. And we see this

  866. beginning in chapter 5

  867. says in verses 1-2

  868. but a man named

  869. Ananias

  870. with his wife

  871. Sapphira

  872. sold a piece

  873. of property

  874. and with his wife's

  875. knowledge

  876. he kept back

  877. for himself

  878. some of the proceeds

  879. and brought only

  880. a part of it

  881. and laid it

  882. at the apostles' feet.

  883. It's clear

  884. that Ananias

  885. and Sapphira

  886. were part of

  887. the Christian community

  888. in Jerusalem.

  889. They knew

  890. who the apostles

  891. were and they knew

  892. that it was common

  893. practice to sell

  894. one's property

  895. and bring the proceeds

  896. to the apostles

  897. to be distributed

  898. to those who are in need.

  899. But Jesus also taught us

  900. in Matthew 13

  901. 24-30

  902. that among God's people

  903. there will always be

  904. weeds mixed in

  905. with the wheat

  906. and that it will not

  907. be possible

  908. to separate them out

  909. until the last day

  910. the judgment day.

  911. So it's possible

  912. that Ananias

  913. and Sapphira

  914. were not genuine believers.

  915. Considering

  916. the divine judgment

  917. that befalls them later

  918. I think it's possible

  919. that they were

  920. not true Christians.

  921. But Peter

  922. prophetically sees

  923. right through

  924. Ananias and Sapphira's

  925. deception

  926. and he asks Ananias

  927. a series of questions

  928. in verses 3-4.

  929. Ananias,

  930. why has Satan

  931. filled your heart

  932. to lie to the Holy Spirit

  933. and to keep back

  934. for yourself

  935. part of the proceeds

  936. of the land?

  937. While it remained

  938. on sold

  939. did it not

  940. remain your own?

  941. And after it was sold

  942. was it not

  943. at your disposal?

  944. Why is it that

  945. you have contrived

  946. this deed in your heart?

  947. You have not lied

  948. to man

  949. but to God.

  950. Peter's questions

  951. reveal exactly

  952. what Ananias

  953. and Sapphira

  954. did wrong.

  955. First,

  956. they had no obligation

  957. to sell their piece

  958. of land.

  959. Peter says,

  960. while it remained

  961. on sold

  962. did it not

  963. remain your own?

  964. There was no

  965. church policy

  966. demanding that

  967. everybody relinquish

  968. their property

  969. and bring it

  970. to the apostles.

  971. it was theirs

  972. to do with it

  973. whatever they pleased

  974. and yet

  975. he sold

  976. they decided

  977. to sell it.

  978. Second,

  979. after selling it

  980. Ananias and Sapphira

  981. did not have

  982. the obligation

  983. to donate

  984. any or all

  985. of the proceeds

  986. to the church.

  987. Peter says,

  988. and after it was sold

  989. was it not

  990. at your disposal?

  991. You could have

  992. kept 100%

  993. of the proceeds

  994. for yourself

  995. or you could have

  996. kept 80%

  997. of the proceeds

  998. for yourself

  999. and then donated

  1000. 20% to the church.

  1001. Nobody would have

  1002. faulted you for it.

  1003. You could have

  1004. done whatever you

  1005. wanted with the

  1006. proceeds from the sale.

  1007. It was your money.

  1008. The problem

  1009. was not that

  1010. Ananias and Sapphira

  1011. withheld part

  1012. of the proceeds.

  1013. The problem

  1014. was that they

  1015. withheld the proceeds

  1016. while lying

  1017. that they were

  1018. donating all

  1019. of the proceeds.

  1020. The problem

  1021. was not

  1022. that they

  1023. were cheap.

  1024. Even donating

1025. a part of the proceeds

  1026. would have been

  1027. very generous.

  1028. The problem

  1029. was not

  1030. that they

  1031. were withholding

  1032. what they

  1033. had already

  1034. dedicated to God.

  1035. The money

  1036. was theirs

  1037. to dispose of

  1038. as they wish.

  1039. The problem

  1040. was that

  1041. they lied

  1042. to God.

  1043. And why

  1044. would they

  1045. do something

  1046. like this?

  1047. Well,

  1048. because Joseph

  1049. had recently

  1050. donated all

  1051. of his proceeds

  1052. from the sale

  1053. of his land

  1054. and the apostles

  1055. and the rest

  1056. of the church

  1057. loved him.

  1058. They even

  1059. gave him

  1060. a nickname.

  1061. They called him

  1062. Barnabas,

  1063. son of encouragement.

  1064. Ananias' name

  1065. means the Lord

  1066. has shown favor,

  1067. but the favor

  1068. of God

  1069. shown in Jesus

  1070. wasn't enough

  1071. for him.

  1072. He wanted

  1073. man's favor.

  1074. He wanted

  1075. man's acclaim.

  1076. He wanted

  1077. to be

  1078. a beloved

  1079. of the apostles.

  1080. I want

  1081. to call

  1082. me

  1083. a son

  1084. of generosity.

  1085. Maybe

  1086. you can

  1087. be called

  1088. the daughter

  1089. of hospitality,

  1090. Sephira.

  1091. Oh,

  1092. but I really

  1093. want some

  1094. of that money

  1095. too.

  1096. Hey,

  1097. I've got

  1098. an idea.

  1099. Since we

  1100. got a great

  1101. deal on this

  1102. sale,

  1103. we can just

  1104. give a part

  1105. of the proceeds

  1106. and it will

  1107. still look

  1108. like we are

  1109. giving away

  1110. the entirety

  1111. of our profit.

  1112. This way

  1113. we can have

  1114. the best

  1115. of both worlds,

  1116. a sterling

  1117. reputation

  1118. in the church

  1119. and sparkling

  1120. riches at home.

  1121. How about

  1122. that idea?

  1123. But nothing

  1124. can be hidden

  1125. from the all-knowing

  1126. and all-seeing

  1127. God.

  1128. God is light

  1129. and in him

  1130. there is no

  1131. darkness at all.

  1132. If we say

  1133. we have fellowship

  1134. with him

  1135. and yet walk

  1136. in the darkness,

  1137. we lie

  1138. and do not

  1139. practice the truth.

  1140. every single

  1141. person in the

  1142. universe stands

  1143. completely exposed

  1144. before the

  1145. light of God.

  1146. So God

  1147. reveals Ananias

  1148. and Sapphira's

  1149. duplicity to

  1150. Peter and

  1151. Peter gets

  1152. right to the

  1153. heart of the

  1154. issue.

  1155. Twice he

  1156. repeats the

  1157. word heart.

  1158. He says in

  1159. verse 3,

  1160. Ananias,

  1161. why has

  1162. Satan filled

  1163. your heart

  1164. to lie to

  1165. the Holy

  1166. Spirit?

  1167. And again

  1168. in verse 4,

  1169. why is it

  1170. that you have

  1171. contrived this

  1172. deed in your

  1173. heart?

  1174. You have not

  1175. lied to man

  1176. but to God.

  1177. We see both

  1178. Satan and

  1179. Ananias' own

  1180. sinful flesh

  1181. at work here.

  1182. Satan has

  1183. filled his

  1184. heart and

  1185. Ananias has

  1186. contrived

  1187. the misdeed

  1188. in his own

  1189. heart.

  1190. And notice

  1191. the contrast

  1192. between this

  1193. description of

  1194. Ananias and

  1195. the description

  1196. of the

  1197. believers early

  1198. in chapter 4

  1199. verse 31,

  1200. where he said

  1201. that they were

  1202. all filled

  1203. with the

  1204. Holy Spirit.

  1205. When the

  1206. church is

  1207. filled by the

  1208. Holy Spirit,

  1209. there is unity.

  1210. unity.

  1211. But when

  1212. its members

  1213. like Ananias

  1214. are filled

  1215. instead by

  1216. Satan,

  1217. there is

  1218. duplicity and

  1219. disunity.

  1220. Earlier in

  1221. chapter 4,

  1222. verse 32,

  1223. it said the

  1224. believers were

  1225. of one heart,

  1226. but Ananias and

  1227. Sapphira were

  1228. not one of

  1229. them because

  1230. they let

  1231. Satan fill

  1232. their hearts.

  1233. So their

  1234. hearts were

  1235. divided,

  1236. double-minded.

  1237. Brothers and

  1238. sisters,

  1239. be watchful of

  1240. your heart.

  1241. When your

  1242. heart is full

  1243. of envy of

  1244. another church

  1245. member,

  1246. when your

  1247. heart is full

  1248. of rivalry,

  1249. when your

  1250. heart is full

  1251. of desire for

  1252. man's approval

  1253. or acclaim,

  1254. when your

  1255. heart is full

  1256. of pride that

  1257. thinks it can

  1258. hide things

  1259. from God,

  1260. that is not

  1261. the work of

  1262. the Holy Spirit

  1263. but the work

  1264. of Satan.

  1265. Such attitudes

  1266. are destructive

  1267. to the church,

  1268. it sows

  1269. discord.

  1270. When we see

  1271. one another

  1272. not as

  1273. teammates,

  1274. members of

  1275. the same

  1276. family of

  1277. God,

  1278. but as

  1279. competitors,

  1280. when we are

  1281. out to gain

  1282. glory for

  1283. ourselves rather

  1284. than for

  1285. God,

  1286. we begin to

  1287. act independently

  1288. instead of

  1289. interdependently

  1290. as we should.

  1291. Different parts

  1292. of the same

  1293. body vying

  1294. for prominence

  1295. instead of

  1296. each doing

  1297. its part

  1298. for the

  1299. benefit of

  1300. the whole.

  1301. It's not

  1302. the way

  1303. it's meant

  1304. to be.

  1305. Do you

  1306. struggle with

  1307. envy when

  1308. you see

  1309. another brother

  1310. or sister

  1311. in the church

  1312. enjoying the

  1313. favor of

  1314. other members

  1315. and or

  1316. the leaders

  1317. of the

  1318. church?

  1319. Do you

  1320. feel tempted

  1321. to do

  1322. good deeds,

  1323. to serve

  1324. diligently,

  1325. to speak

  1326. knowledgeably,

  1327. or to give

  1328. generously,

  1329. not primarily

  1330. out of your

  1331. love for

  1332. God and

  1333. for his

  1334. people,

  1335. but out

  1336. of your

  1337. desire for

  1338. recognition?

  1339. That's

  1340. what Ananias

  1341. was doing.

  1342. And God

  1343. would not

  1344. stand for

  1345. it.

  1346. It says in

  1347. verses 5 to

  1348. 6,

  1349. when Ananias

  1350. heard these

  1351. words,

  1352. he fell

  1353. down and

  1354. breathed his

  1355. last.

  1356. And great

  1357. fear came

  1358. upon all

  1359. who heard

  1360. of it.

  1361. The young

  1362. man rose

  1363. and wrapped

  1364. him up and

  1365. carried him

  1366. out and

  1367. buried him.

  1368. Peter neither

  1369. condemns nor

  1370. curses Ananias,

  1371. yet God

  1372. himself brings

  1373. down this

  1374. spontaneous

  1375. judgment,

  1376. and Ananias

  1377. falls down

  1378. and breathes

  1379. his last.

  1380. Maybe he

  1381. died of a

  1382. heart attack

  1383. at the shock

  1384. and shame

  1385. of being

  1386. exposed in

  1387. public like

  1388. that.

  1389. We can't

  1390. know for

  1391. sure,

  1392. but what we

  1393. do know is

  1394. that this

  1395. was an

  1396. act of

  1397. divine

  1398. judgment.

  1399. The result

  1400. of that

  1401. judgment was

  1402. great fear

  1403. among all

  1404. those who

  1405. heard it.

  1406. Great power

  1407. and great

  1408. grace were

  1409. upon the

  1410. church in

  1411. verse 33,

  1412. and this

  1413. inspires

  1414. great fear

  1415. among all

  1416. those who

  1417. hear of

  1418. the mighty

  1419. acts of

  1420. God.

  1421. Verse 7

  1422. says,

  1423. After an

  1424. interval of

  1425. about three

  1426. hours,

  1427. Ananias'

  1428. wife came

  1429. in,

  1430. not knowing

  1431. what had

  1432. happened.

  1433. This is

  1434. ironic.

  1435. Early in

  1436. verse 2,

  1437. a slightly

  1438. different form

  1439. of the same

  1440. word to

  1441. know was

  1442. used to

  1443. tell us

  1444. that Ananias,

  1445. with his

  1446. wife's

  1447. knowledge,

  1448. kept back for

  1449. himself some of

  1450. the proceeds

  1451. and brought

  1452. only a part

  1453. of it and

  1454. laid it at

  1455. the apostles'

  1456. feet.

  1457. At that

  1458. time,

  1459. it was only

  1460. Sapphira who

  1461. was in the

  1462. know, so

  1463. to speak.

  1464. Only she

  1465. was aware of

  1466. her husband's

  1467. ploy, or so

  1468. she thought.

  1469. But now,

  1470. Sapphira is the

  1471. only person who

  1472. is not in the

  1473. know.

  1474. Peter knows,

  1475. the young

  1476. man who

  1477. carried out

  1478. Ananias'

  1479. corpse knows,

  1480. and of

  1481. course God

  1482. knows, but

  1483. Sapphira herself

  1484. does not

  1485. know what

  1486. has happened.

  1487. May this be a

  1488. warning to

  1489. those of us

  1490. who think

  1491. that we can

  1492. hide things

  1493. from God

  1494. and get

  1495. away with

  1496. sin.

  1497. We might

  1498. deceive man,

  1499. but we can

  1500. never deceive

  1501. the all-knowing

  1502. God.

  1503. If you think

  1504. you know

  1505. something that

  1506. God doesn't

  1507. know in

  1508. truth, you're

  1509. the one who

  1510. doesn't know

  1511. what God

  1512. knows.

  1513. Peter asks

  1514. Sapphira in

  1515. verse 8,

  1516. tell me whether

  1517. you sold the

  1518. land for so

  1519. much.

  1520. It's possible

  1521. that Peter was

  1522. at this point

  1523. unaware that

  1524. Sapphira was

  1525. Ananias'

  1526. partner in

  1527. crime, in

  1528. which case he's

  1529. trying to

  1530. determine

  1531. Sapphira's

  1532. knowledge and

  1533. role in the

  1534. matter.

  1535. If Peter

  1536. already knew

  1537. prophetically that

  1538. Sapphira was

  1539. part of the

  1540. ploy, then he

  1541. is here offering

  1542. her a second

  1543. chance to

  1544. repent and

  1545. tell the

  1546. truth.

  1547. Is the money

  1548. that your

  1549. husband dropped

  1550. off earlier

  1551. today really

  1552. the full

  1553. amount that

  1554. you received

  1555. for the

  1556. sale of

  1557. your land?

  1558. And Sapphira

  1559. responds,

  1560. yes, for

  1561. so much.

  1562. And Peter

  1563. says, how

  1564. is it that

  1565. you have

  1566. agreed together

  1567. to test the

  1568. spirit of

  1569. the Lord?

  1570. Behold, the

  1571. feet of those

  1572. who have buried

  1573. your husband are

  1574. at the door and

  1575. they will carry

  1576. you out.

  1577. Immediately she

  1578. fell down at

  1579. his feet and

  1580. breathed her

  1581. last.

  1582. When the

  1583. young men

  1584. came in,

  1585. they found

  1586. her dead and

  1587. they carried

  1588. her out and

  1589. buried her beside

  1590. her husband.

  1591. And once

  1592. again, the

  1593. result is

  1594. great fear

  1595. that came upon

  1596. the whole

  1597. church and

  1598. upon all

  1599. those who

  1600. heard of

  1601. these things.

  1602. Why does

  1603. God act with

  1604. such severe

  1605. immediate

  1606. judgment of

  1607. Ananias and

  1608. Sapphira?

  1609. Verse 3

  1610. says that

  1611. Ananias lied

  1612. to the Holy

  1613. Spirit.

  1614. Verse 4

  1615. says that

  1616. he lied

  1617. not to

  1618. man but

  1619. to God.

  1620. Similarly,

  1621. verse 9

  1622. says that

  1623. Ananias and

  1624. Sapphira agreed

  1625. to test the

  1626. spirit of the

  1627. Lord.

  1628. That's the

  1629. crux of

  1630. the matter.

  1631. Lying to

  1632. God, or to

  1633. put it another

  1634. way, testing

  1635. God is a

  1636. serious offense.

  1637. First, Ananias and

  1638. Sapphira were

  1639. lying to God.

  1640. They lied to

  1641. Peter and the

  1642. apostles, but

  1643. Peter says that

  1644. in doing so,

  1645. they have not

  1646. lied to man but

  1647. to God.

  1648. Peter's not

  1649. claiming to be

  1650. God.

  1651. He's rather

  1652. speaking like

  1653. Jesus does

  1654. later in Acts

    Acts 9:4

  1655. chapter 9,

  1656. verse 4.

  1657. The risen Jesus

  1658. says to Saul who

  1659. was persecuting the

  1660. church, Saul, Saul,

  1661. why are you

  1662. persecuting me?

  1663. Because the

  1664. church is the

  1665. body of Christ and

  1666. Christ is the

  1667. head of the

  1668. church.

  1669. The church is the

  1670. temple of the

  1671. very spirit of

  1672. God.

  1673. To persecute the

  1674. church, then it's

  1675. to persecute Christ

  1676. himself.

  1677. And in trying to

  1678. deceive the church

  1679. and its

  1680. representatives,

  1681. Ananias sought to

  1682. deceive God

  1683. himself.

  1684. When children are

  1685. little, it's

  1686. patently obvious

  1687. that they are

  1688. lying.

  1689. That's the case

  1690. with some

  1691. adults too,

  1692. but especially

  1693. with very young

  1694. children.

  1695. So it's almost

  1696. cute when a

  1697. parent catches a

  1698. child doing

  1699. that.

  1700. But the case of

  1701. Ananias and

  1702. Sophia is far

  1703. worse than

  1704. that.

  1705. It's absurd

  1706. to think that

  1707. one can deceive

  1708. the omniscient

  1709. God.

  1710. In fact, to

  1711. lie to him is

  1712. to make a

  1713. mockery of him.

  1714. You don't

  1715. really see all

  1716. that I do,

  1717. do you?

  1718. You don't

  1719. really know

  1720. everything I

  1721. know, do

  1722. you?

  1723. You're not

  1724. really God,

  1725. are you?

  1726. Ananias and

  1727. Sapphira lied

  1728. to God, and in

  1729. doing so, they

  1730. were also

  1731. testing God.

  1732. When the

  1733. Israelites tested

  1734. God in the

  1735. wilderness, God

  1736. called it

  1737. rebellion in

  1738. Psalm 78.

  1739. to test God

  1740. in this

  1741. instance is to

  1742. know that

  1743. something is

  1744. wrong, but

  1745. to do it

  1746. anyway in

  1747. defiance of

  1748. God, to

  1749. test him, to

  1750. see whether

  1751. God is really

  1752. serious about

  1753. his prohibition

  1754. or not, to

  1755. test it to see

  1756. whether God

  1757. will really

  1758. react or

  1759. not.

  1760. Sorry for all

  1761. the parenting

  1762. analogies here,

  1763. but there comes a

  1764. moment in

  1765. parenting when

  1766. you realize that

  1767. your toddler is

  1768. not the innocent

  1769. angel that you

  1770. thought he or

  1771. she was, but a

  1772. willful, sinful

  1773. human being like

  1774. the rest of us.

  1775. We have a

  1776. plant in our

  1777. house whose

  1778. leaf is poisonous

  1779. to humans if

  1780. you consume it.

  1781. It's fittingly

  1782. called a snake

  1783. plant.

  1784. And of course,

  1785. our toddler likes

  1786. to crawl over to

  1787. this plant, rip

  1788. off the leaves,

  1789. and try to eat

  1790. it.

  1791. One time, she

  1792. was trying to do

  1793. exactly this as I

  1794. was watching her,

  1795. and I looked her

  1796. in the eyes and

  1797. told her,

  1798. no, you

  1799. can't eat that,

  1800. no.

  1801. And then she

  1802. looked at me very

  1803. intently with a

  1804. serious look on

  1805. her face, and I

  1806. knew she understood

  1807. exactly what I was

  1808. telling her.

  1809. And then after a

  1810. few seconds of

  1811. staring me down

  1812. and as if daring

  1813. me to do

  1814. something about it,

  1815. she began to

  1816. test me by

  1817. proceeding to

  1818. rip off the

  1819. leaf.

  1820. I got even

  1821. closer to her

  1822. and told her

  1823. again, no.

  1824. And this time,

  1825. she knew she

  1826. couldn't get away

  1827. with it.

  1828. So she looked at

  1829. me with the

  1830. saddest little

  1831. face and started

  1832. crying.

  1833. Thankfully, she

  1834. doesn't do that

  1835. anymore.

  1836. She hasn't tried

  1837. it since.

  1838. Doing the wrong

  1839. thing unknowingly

  1840. is one thing,

  1841. but to do it

  1842. knowingly,

  1843. willfully,

  1844. that's something

  1845. else.

  1846. That's hubris,

  1847. defiance,

  1848. rebellion,

  1849. and it must be

  1850. addressed.

  1851. And Ananias and

  1852. Sapphira agreed

  1853. together to test

  1854. the spirit of the

  1855. Lord.

  1856. And that's a

  1857. serious offense

  1858. because God is

  1859. not someone to be

  1860. trifled with.

  1861. He's not someone

  1862. you can treat

  1863. lightly.

  1864. I love this

  1865. illustration from

  1866. The Chronicles of

  1867. Narnia,

  1868. The Lion, the Witch,

  1869. and the Wardrobe.

  1870. When Mr. Beaver

  1871. is talking to

  1872. Susan, Mr. Beaver

  1873. says, Aslan is a

  1874. lion, the lion,

  1875. the great lion.

  1876. Oh, said Susan,

  1877. I thought he was

  1878. a man.

  1879. Is he quite safe?

  1880. I shall feel rather

  1881. nervous about meeting

  1882. a lion.

  1883. Safe?

  1884. said Mr. Beaver.

  1885. Who said anything

  1886. about safe?

  1887. Of course he isn't

  1888. safe.

  1889. But he's good.

  1890. He's the king,

  1891. I tell you.

  1892. God's the king.

  1893. He is holy.

  1894. He sits enthroned

  1895. far above the

  1896. heavens.

  1897. And yet we

  1898. sometimes think

  1899. that God is

  1900. someone who

  1901. will put up

  1902. with endless

  1903. indignities

  1904. at our own

  1905. sinful hands

  1906. and never

  1907. respond.

  1908. God is the king.

  1909. If this instance

  1910. of divine judgment

  1911. makes you uneasy,

  1912. you're not alone.

  1913. That's in fact

  1914. the appropriate

  1915. response.

  1916. That's why

  1917. twice we are told

  1918. that great fear

  1919. came upon all

  1920. those who

  1921. heard this

  1922. incident.

  1923. Later,

  1924. chapter 5,

  1925. verse 13,

  1926. it says,

  1927. none of the

  1928. rest there

  1929. joined them,

  1930. the church,

  1931. but the people

  1932. held them in

  1933. high esteem.

  1934. Unbelievers

  1935. who observed

  1936. the kinds of

  1937. things that

  1938. were happening

  1939. in the church

  1940. realized that

  1941. God is holy,

  1942. that his church

  1943. is sacred,

  1944. so they were

  1945. careful around

  1946. the gathering

  1947. of believers.

  1948. They did not

  1949. treat them

  1950. irreverently

  1951. or flippantly.

  1952. They treated

  1953. the church

  1954. with respect.

  1955. They didn't

  1956. saunter over

  1957. to a church

  1958. gathering

  1959. like a

  1960. cackling

  1961. spectator

  1962. at a

  1963. carnival.

  1964. They wouldn't

  1965. dare to do

  1966. that.

  1967. When we see

  1968. a terrifying

  1969. act of judgment

  1970. like the one

  1971. we see here

  1972. in this passage,

  1973. we need to

  1974. be reminded

  1975. that God

  1976. is a holy

  1977. God who

  1978. hates sin

  1979. and judges

  1980. sinners.

  1981. Even if you

  1982. don't receive

  1983. immediate judgment

  1984. like Ananias

  1985. and Sapphira,

  1986. every sinner

  1987. will receive

  1988. ultimate judgment,

  1989. on the final

  1990. judgment day

  1991. when Christ

  1992. returns.

  1993. God created

  1994. all of us

  1995. for His glory

  1996. to obey Him

  1997. and to represent

  1998. Him,

  1999. but we have

  2000. all defied

  2001. His authority,

  2002. rebelled against

  2003. Him,

  2004. and that's

  2005. what we call

  2006. sin.

  2007. And apart

  2008. from divine

  2009. intervention,

  2010. we are all

  2011. liable to the

  2012. same punishment

  2013. that befell

  2014. Ananias and

  2015. Sapphira,

  2016. death.

  2017. And physical

  2018. death is just

  2019. a symptom of

  2020. spiritual death,

  2021. our separation

  2022. from God.

  2023. And if we

  2024. don't repent

  2025. of our sins

  2026. and receive

  2027. forgiveness from

  2028. God for our

  2029. sins,

  2030. we will be

  2031. punished with

  2032. the second

  2033. death,

  2034. eternal

  2035. separation from

  2036. God.

  2037. But it's

  2038. precisely because

  2039. God's judgment

  2040. is so real

  2041. that God's

  2042. mercy is also

  2043. so real.

  2044. sin.

  2045. You don't

  2046. feel that

  2047. God's mercy,

  2048. the power of

  2049. it,

  2050. until you

  2051. have felt

  2052. viscerally

  2053. the impending

  2054. doom,

  2055. the threat

  2056. of God's

  2057. judgment.

  2058. it.

  2059. We can't

  2060. save ourselves

  2061. from Ananias

  2062. and Sapphira's

  2063. fate because

  2064. that's what we

  2065. all deserve.

  2066. But God in

  2067. mercy sent

  2068. His only

  2069. Son,

  2070. Jesus,

  2071. to die on

  2072. the cross

  2073. for our

  2074. sins.

  2075. We should

  2076. have been

  2077. exposed in

  2078. all our

  2079. nakedness of

  2080. sin and

  2081. shame.

  2082. But instead,

  2083. Jesus hung

  2084. naked on

  2085. the cross,

  2086. exposed in

  2087. shame,

  2088. bearing our

  2089. sin.

  2090. We should

  2091. have been

  2092. punished for

  2093. our willful

  2094. rebellion against

  2095. God, but

  2096. instead,

  2097. Jesus, the

  2098. perfectly

  2099. obedient Son,

  2100. bore the

  2101. punishment for

  2102. our treason and

  2103. endured the

  2104. just wrath of

  2105. God, His

  2106. Father.

  2107. And having

  2108. paid the

  2109. price, Jesus

  2110. rose in

  2111. victory from

  2112. the dead so

  2113. that all those

  2114. who put their

  2115. trust in Him

  2116. might be

  2117. forgiven and

  2118. reconciled to

  2119. God.

  2120. so that we

  2121. might no longer

  2122. be under

  2123. God's judgment,

  2124. but under

  2125. His mercy.

  2126. If you're not

  2127. yet a believer

  2128. in Jesus

  2129. Christ, if

  2130. you're not

  2131. yet a part

  2132. of the

  2133. church, the

  2134. congregation of

  2135. God's people,

  2136. then now is

  2137. your chance.

  2138. Because there

  2139. is no turning

  2140. back after

  2141. death.

  2142. Notice the

  2143. finality with

  2144. which Ananias

  2145. and Sapphira's

  2146. death is

  2147. described.

  2148. Ananias,

  2149. breathe his

  2150. last.

  2151. Sapphira,

  2152. breathe her

  2153. last.

  2154. Once we

  2155. draw our

  2156. last breath

  2157. and expire,

  2158. there can be

  2159. no turning

  2160. back to

  2161. God.

  2162. So turn to

  2163. Jesus today

  2164. and receive

  2165. His mercy

  2166. rather than

  2167. judgment.

  2168. For those of

  2169. us who are

  2170. already members

  2171. of the church

  2172. of God,

  2173. let's pray

  2174. continually

  2175. and seek

  2176. the filling

  2177. of the Holy

  2178. Spirit.

  2179. who enables

  2180. us to bear

  2181. witness to

  2182. Jesus with

  2183. one heart

  2184. and soul.

  2185. Let's

  2186. respond to

  2187. this message

  2188. by praying.

  2189. God.

  2190. Godcue the

  2191. God,

  2192. God,

  2193. God,

  2194. God,
