  1. Here is in the book of Acts. We are going to cover Acts 6, 8 to 7, 60 today. It's a relatively long

  2. section and so during the sermon I'm not going to be reading large chunks of scripture like I

  3. normally do. I'll be summarizing a lot of it so when I'm reading it in the beginning please try

  4. to pay attention and pay attention in particular to the themes of rejection and themes of

  5. God's presence transcending Jerusalem and its locale. But let me pray before for the reading

  6. and preaching of God's word. Heavenly Father, we humble ourselves before you. Lord, it is

  7. our sin. To care so much about looking good than being good. To care so much about seeming

  8. righteous rather than being righteous. To care so much about the recognition and

  9. acknowledging from men and not from you, Lord. Forgive us and now address us by your word.

  10. Transform us so that we might be faithful witnesses who live with an eternal perspective,

  11. who live to receive that acknowledgement and commendation from the heavenly court, from our Lord Jesus Christ.

  12. And not to please men.

  13. In Jesus' name we pray. Amen.

  14. Amen.

  15. Amen.

  16. Amen.

  17. Acts chapter 6 verse 8 to chapter 7 verse 60.

    Acts 6:8

  18. And Stephen, full of grace and power, was doing great wonders and signs among the people.

  19. Then some of those who belonged to the synagogue of the freedmen, as it was called, and of the

  20. Cyrenians and of the Alexandrians and of those from Cilicia and Asia, rose up and disputed with Stephen.

  21. But they could not withstand the wisdom and the spirit with which he was speaking.

  22. Then they secretly instigated men who said,

  23. We have heard him speak blasphemous words against Moses and God.

  24. And they stirred up the people and the elders and the scribes, and they came upon him and seized him

  25. and brought him before the council.

  26. And they set up false witnesses who said,

  27. This man never ceases to speak words against this holy place and the law.

  28. For we have heard him say that this Jesus of Nazareth will destroy this place and will change the customs that Moses delivered to us.

  29. And gazing at him, all who sat in the council saw that his face was like the face of an angel.

  30. And the high priest said,

  31. Are these things so?

  32. And Stephen said,

  33. Brothers and fathers, hear me.

  34. The God of glory appeared to our father Abraham when he was in Mesopotamia,

  35. before he lived in Haran,

  36. and said to him,

  37. Go out from your land and from your kindred and go into the land that I will show you.

  38. Then he went out from the land of the Chaldeans and lived in Haran.

  39. And after his father died, God removed him from there into this land in which you are now living.

  40. Yet he gave him no inheritance in it, not even a foot's length,

  41. but promised to give it to him as a possession and to his offspring after him,

  42. who he had no child.

  43. And God spoke to this effect,

  44. that his offspring would be sojourners in a land belonging to others,

  45. who would enslave them and afflict them four hundred years.

  46. But I will judge the nation that they serve, said God.

  47. And after that they shall come out and worship me in this place.

  48. And he gave him the covenant of circumcision.

  49. And so Abraham became the father of Isaac and circumcised him on the eighth day.

  50. And Isaac became the father of Jacob and Jacob of the twelve patriarchs.

  51. And the patriarchs, jealous of Joseph, sold him into Egypt.

  52. But God was with him and rescued him out of all his afflictions

  53. and gave him favor and wisdom before Pharaoh,

  54. king of Egypt, who made him ruler over Egypt and over all his household.

  55. Now there came a famine throughout all Egypt and Canaan and great affliction.

  56. And our fathers could find a food.

  57. But when Jacob heard that there was grain in Egypt,

  58. he sent out our fathers on their first visit.

  59. And on the second visit, Joseph made himself known to his brothers

  60. and Joseph's family became known to Pharaoh.

  61. And Joseph sent and summoned Jacob, his father, and all his kindred,

  62. seventy-five persons in all.

  63. And Jacob went down into Egypt and he died, he and our fathers.

  64. And they were carried back to Shechem and laid in the tomb

  65. that Abram had bought for a sum of silver from the sons of Hamor in Shechem.

  66. But as the time of the promise grew near, which God had granted to Abraham,

  67. the people increased and multiplied in Egypt.

  68. But until there arose over Egypt another king who did not know Joseph,

  69. he dealt shrewdly with our race and forced our fathers to expose their infants

  70. so that they would not be kept alive.

  71. At this time, Moses was born and he was beautiful in God's sight.

  72. And he was brought up for three months in his father's house.

  73. And when he was exposed, Pharaoh's daughter adopted him and brought him up as her own son.

  74. And Moses was instructed in all the wisdom of the Egyptians,

  75. and he was mighty in his words and deeds.

  76. When he was forty years old, he came into his heart to visit his brothers,

  77. the children of Israel.

  78. And seeing one of them being wronged, he defended the oppressed men

  79. and avenged them by striking down the Egyptians.

  80. He supposed that his brothers would understand that God was giving them salvation by his hand,

  81. but they did not understand.

  82. And on the following day, he appeared to them as they were quarreling

  83. and tried to reconcile them, saying,

  84. Men, you are brothers.

  85. Why do you wrong each other?

  86. But the man who was wronging his neighbor thrust him aside,

  87. saying, Who made you a ruler and a judge over us?

  88. Do you want to kill me as you killed the Egyptian yesterday?

  89. At this retort, Moses fled and became an exile in the land of Midian,

  90. where he became the father of two sons.

  91. Now, when forty years had passed, an angel appeared to him in the wilderness of Mount Sinai

  92. in a flame of fire in a bush.

  93. When Moses saw it, he was amazed at the sight,

  94. and as he drew near to look, there came the voice of the Lord.

  95. I am the God of your fathers, the God of Abraham and of Isaac and of Jacob.

  96. And Moses trembled and did not dare to look.

  97. Then the Lord said to him,

  98. Take off the sandals from your feet,

  99. for the place where you are standing is holy ground.

  100. I have surely seen the affliction of my people who are in Egypt

  101. and have heard their groaning,

  102. and I have come down to deliver them.

  103. And now, come, I will send you to Egypt.

  104. This Moses, whom they rejected, saying,

  105. Who made you a ruler and a judge?

  106. This man God sent as both ruler and redeemer

  107. by the hand of the angel who appeared to him in the bush.

  108. This man led them out, performing wonders and signs in Egypt

  109. and at the Red Sea and in the wilderness for forty years.

  110. This is the Moses who said to the Israelites,

  111. God will raise up for you a prophet like me from your brothers.

  112. This is the one who was in the congregation in the wilderness

  113. with the angel who spoke to him at Mount Sinai and with our fathers.

  114. He received living oracles to give us.

  115. Our fathers refused to obey him, but thrust him aside,

  116. and in their hearts they turned to Egypt,

  117. saying to Aaron,

  118. Make for us gods who will go before us.

  119. As for this Moses who led us out from the land of Egypt,

  120. we do not know what has become of him.

  121. And they made a calf in those days

  122. and offered a sacrifice to the idol

  123. and were rejoicing in the works of their hands.

  124. But God turned away and gave them over to worship the host of heaven.

  125. As it is written in the book of the prophets,

  126. Did you bring to me slain beasts and sacrifices

  127. during the forty years in the wilderness, O house of Israel?

  128. You took up the tent of Moloch

  129. and the star of your god, Rephon,

  130. the images that you made to worship,

  131. and I will send you into exile beyond Babylon.

  132. Our fathers had the tent of witness in the wilderness,

  133. just as he who spoke to Moses directed him to make it

  134. according to the pattern that he had seen.

  135. Our fathers, in turn, brought it in with Joshua

  136. when they dispossessed the nations that God drove out before our fathers.

  137. So it was until the days of David

  138. who found favor in the sight of God

  139. and asked to find a dwelling place for the God of Jacob.

  140. But it was Solomon who built the house for him.

  141. Yet the Most High does not dwell in houses made by hands.

  142. As the prophet says,

  143. Heaven is my throne and the earth is my footstool.

  144. What kind of house would you build for me, says the Lord?

  145. Or what is the place of my rest?

  146. Did not my hand make all these things?

  147. You stiff-necked people,

  148. uncircumcised in heart and ears,

  149. you always resist the Holy Spirit.

  150. As your fathers did, so do you.

  151. Which of the prophets did your fathers not persecute?

  152. And they killed those who announced beforehand

  153. the coming of the Righteous One,

  154. whom you have not betrayed and murdered.

  155. You who received the law as delivered by angels

  156. and did not keep it.

  157. Now when they heard these things,

  158. they were enraged,

  159. and they ground their teeth at him.

  160. But he, full of the Holy Spirit,

  161. gazed into heaven and saw the glory of God

  162. and Jesus standing at the right hand of God.

  163. And he said,

  164. Behold, I see the heavens opened

  165. and the Son of Man standing at the right hand of God.

  166. But they cried out with a loud voice

  167. and stopped their ears and rushed together at him.

  168. Then they cast him out of the city and stoned him.

  169. And the witnesses laid down their garments

  170. at the feet of a young man named Saul.

  171. And as they were stoning Stephen,

  172. he called out,

  173. Lord Jesus, receive my spirit.

  174. And falling to his knees,

  175. he cried out with a loud voice,

  176. Lord, do not hold this sin against them.

  177. And when he had said this,

  178. he fell asleep.

  179. This is God's holy and authoritative word.

  180. We were introduced to Stephen

  181. in the preceding passage

  182. as one of the seven appointed

  183. to distribute bread, food,

  184. to the widows in the church.

  185. He was described as full of spirit and wisdom,

  186. full of faith and of the Holy Spirit.

  187. And so it's not surprising then now

  188. to see him ministering effectively

  189. among the Greek-speaking Jews.

  190. He says that he was ministering

  191. full of grace and power,

  192. was doing great wonders and signs

  193. among the people in chapter 6, verse 8.

  194. But as always,

  195. as Stephen is growing in favor

  196. with God and man

  197. and his ministry is thriving,

  198. there are detractors that come

  199. to speak against him.

  200. It says in verses 9 to 10,

  201. then some of those who belonged

  202. to the synagogue of the freedmen,

  203. as it was called,

  204. and of the Cyrenians

  205. and of the Alexandrians

  206. and of those from Cilician Asia,

  207. rose up and disputed with Stephen.

  208. It's unclear whether this represents

  209. all distinct synagogues

  210. or whether it's one synagogue

  211. of the freedmen

  212. that had all these people

  213. from different ethnicities

  214. or different regions represented there.

  215. But it seems that Stephen was ministering

  216. to the Greek-speaking Jews in particular.

  217. These are all regions

  218. of parts of the Roman Empire

  219. of where the Jewish diaspora lived.

  220. The synagogue of the freedmen

  221. likely was a synagogue

  222. made up of Jews

  223. who had been formerly slaves

  224. but emancipated.

  225. And so he's ministering

  226. to fellow Hellenist Jews.

  227. Stephen himself was a Greek-speaking Jew

  228. who is culturally Greek, Hellenist,

  229. even though he's ethnically Jewish.

  230. But some of them, it says,

  231. disputed with Stephen,

  232. but they could not withstand

  233. the wisdom and the spirit

  234. with which he was speaking

  235. because Stephen was full

  236. of the Holy Spirit.

  237. However, when prideful, foolish men

  238. can't win,

  239. they cheat.

  240. So in verses 11 to 14,

  241. it says that they secretly

  242. instigated men who said,

  243. we have heard him speak

  244. blasphemous words

  245. against Moses and God.

  246. They're conspiring to destroy Stephen

  247. by accusing him with blasphemy,

  248. which was supposed to be punished

  249. by stoning with death,

  250. according to Leviticus chapter 24.

    Leviticus 24 chapter mention

  251. So on the one hand,

  252. they secretly instigate men

  253. to falsely charge Stephen

  254. with blasphemy.

  255. And on the other hand,

  256. they stir up the people in public

  257. in response to that charge

  258. that they themselves instigated.

  259. And so they fire up the crowd

  260. and see Stephen

  261. and drag him before the court

  262. in the Sanhedrin.

  263. And once there,

  264. they continue their malicious work

  265. by setting up false witnesses.

  266. And they say this,

  267. this man never ceases

  268. to speak words against

  269. this holy place and the law.

  270. For we have heard him say

  271. that this Jesus of Nazareth

  272. will destroy this place

  273. and will change the customs

  274. that Moses delivered to us.

  275. So the charge is primarily twofold.

  276. The charge of blasphemy.

  277. First, they allege that Stephen said

  278. Jesus will destroy the temple.

  279. And then secondly,

  280. they charge that Stephen said

  281. Jesus changes the customs of Moses.

  282. As is often the case

  283. with false accusations,

  284. there's at least a modicum of truth

  285. in both of these allegations.

  286. And that gives it an air of credibility

  287. because Jesus did prophesy

  288. during his ministry

  289. of the destruction of the temple.

  290. What's false, however,

  291. is that he never claimed

  292. that he himself will destroy.

  293. And Jesus also said in John 2, verse 19,

    John 2:19

  294. destroy this temple

  295. and in three days I will raise it up.

  296. The Jews misunderstood this statement

  297. to mean the literal temple,

  298. the physical temple standing in Jerusalem.

  299. And John clarifies in that context

  300. that Jesus was not speaking of the temple

  301. but of his body.

  302. If they destroy him and kill him,

  303. that he will be raised on the third day.

  304. He was pointing to the once and for all sacrifice

  305. he would make in his own flesh

  306. by dying and being raised from the dead

  307. so that to make sacrifices for sin

  308. in the temple no longer necessary.

  309. But to devout Jews

  310. and maybe especially to the diaspora Jews,

  311. the Hellenist Jews

  312. who had returned to Jerusalem

  313. to be near the temple,

  314. this would have been a particularly offensive claim

  315. because they had come intentionally

  316. to be more actively, intentionally Jewish

  317. and to practice their faith

  318. within the temple.

  319. And so they twist Stephen's words

  320. and charge him with blasphemy

  321. and we can see their murderous intent

  322. because they know very well

  323. that the punishment for blasphemy is stoning.

  324. And in their wickedness,

  325. they raise up false witnesses

  326. even though they know

  327. that the law also prohibits

  328. being a false witness.

  329. But they're willing to violate the law

  330. as long as it suits their agenda.

  331. And in chapter 7, verse 1,

  332. the high priest calls upon Stephen

  333. to defend himself

  334. and he says,

  335. Are these things so?

  336. Are you really preaching

  337. against the temple of God

  338. and the law of Moses?

  339. Are you really preaching

  340. that Jesus will destroy the temple

  341. and change the customs of Moses,

  342. the two charges?

  343. This is not a question

  344. that Stephen can answer

  345. with the simple yes or no.

  346. because he could have

  347. totally disavowed those claims

  348. in order to get himself off the hook.

  349. But if he did that,

  350. he would not be bearing

  351. faithful witness to Jesus.

  352. Because it is true

  353. that salvation is found

  354. in no one else

  355. but in the name of Jesus.

  356. Jesus does supersede the temple.

  357. Jesus does bring the law of Moses

  358. to its intended end,

  359. as it says in Romans 10, verse 4.

    Romans 10:4

  360. Jesus does not destroy the temple

  361. or abolish the law,

  362. but he does fulfill

  363. both of those things.

  364. Jesus is the new

  365. and the greater Moses.

  366. And so simply replying

  367. yes or no

  368. would not have sufficed.

  369. So he chooses

  370. to use this last opportunity,

  371. his last few breaths,

  372. to preach the gospel,

  373. to speak of Jesus.

  374. Jesus.

  375. And Luke's main point

  376. in including this narrative here

  377. in Acts

  378. is to teach us

  379. that whoever acknowledges Christ

  380. before the court of men

  381. will be acknowledged by him

  382. in the court of God.

  383. And he answers the two charges.

  384. So first,

  385. he talks about how Jesus

  386. is the new temple.

  387. And then secondly,

  388. he talks about how Jesus

  389. is the new Moses.

  390. First, Stephen recounts

  391. the history of Israel

  392. to make a biblical case

  393. that God's presence

  394. has always transcended

  395. Jerusalem and its temple.

  396. And in doing so,

  397. he supports his assertion

  398. that Jesus is the new temple of God.

  399. And beginning with Abraham,

  400. the father of faith,

  401. he speaks about this

  402. in verses 2 to 8.

  403. He begins with a conciliatory tone,

  404. addressing the Jews

  405. as brothers and fathers,

  406. affirming that they're his fellow Jews.

  407. But then later,

  408. when he's speaking of Abraham

  409. entering the promised land,

  410. in verse 4,

  411. he distances himself

  412. from his audience.

  413. And he says,

  414. God removed him from there

  415. into this land

  416. in which you are now living.

  417. He doesn't say

  418. this land in which we are now living.

  419. He distances himself

  420. from the land

  421. and from the fellow Jews.

  422. He's trying to make

  423. a theological point.

  424. This is a point that he,

  425. notice how he emphasizes

  426. Abraham's geographical movements

  427. in that section,

  428. verses 2 to 8.

  429. In verse 2,

  430. he says that God appeared

  431. to Abraham where?

  432. Not in Israel,

  433. but when he was in Mesopotamia.

  434. And after that,

  435. Abraham doesn't enter

  436. the promised land right away,

  437. but then he lives

  438. in among the Chaldeans

  439. in Haran.

  440. It's only after that

  441. that Abraham finally

  442. enters the promised land.

  443. But even when he does,

  444. Stephen notes in verse 5,

  445. God gave him

  446. no inheritance in it,

  447. not even a foot's length,

  448. but promised to give it to him

  449. as a possession

  450. and to his offspring after him.

  451. This is a remarkable point.

  452. God didn't merely

  453. promise Abraham

  454. that he would give his land

  455. to his offspring.

  456. He promised it to Abraham

  457. himself as a possession,

  458. but then he didn't give him

  459. a foot's length.

  460. This is why it says

  461. in Hebrews 11, 8 to 10,

  462. that by faith Abraham obeyed

  463. when he was called

  464. to go out to a place

  465. that he was to receive

  466. as inheritance.

  467. And he went out

  468. not knowing where he was going.

  469. By faith he went to live

  470. in the land of the promise

  471. as in a foreign land,

  472. living in tents

  473. with Isaac and Jacob,

  474. heirs with him

  475. of the same promise.

  476. For he was looking forward

  477. to the city

  478. that has foundations,

  479. whose designer

  480. and builder is God.

  481. In other words,

  482. the land of Canaan

  483. represents and points

  484. to something far bigger,

  485. far better.

  486. It represents the city of God.

  487. Living in the presence of God,

  488. in perfect communion with him,

  489. it's a type

  490. or a foreshadowing of heaven.

  491. Similarly,

  492. Abraham's descendants

  493. won't immediately possess

  494. Canaan either.

  495. God told Abraham

  496. that his offspring

  497. would be sojourners,

  498. aliens,

  499. foreigners

  500. in a land belonging to others.

  501. Stephen's pointing out

  502. to his Jewish audience

  503. that though they make

  504. much of the fact

  505. that they now occupy

  506. the land that God himself

  507. had promised to them,

  508. that though they occupy

  509. the Jerusalem

  510. where the temple is,

  511. Abraham and many

  512. of his descendants

  513. never themselves

  514. physically possessed

  515. the land.

  516. They were instead

  517. sojourners,

  518. and yet they were fathers

  519. and exemplars

  520. of the faith.

  521. Being a faithful Jew,

  522. in other words,

  523. is not so inextricably

  524. tied to the Holy Land.

  525. moving on from Abraham,

  526. Stephen makes the same point

  527. about Joseph

  528. and the other patriarchs

  529. in verses 9 to 16.

  530. Joseph was sold

  531. into slavery

  532. by his jealous brothers.

  533. Nonetheless,

  534. despite the fact

  535. that Joseph had been

  536. forcibly disinherited

  537. from the land of Canaan

  538. and removed

  539. from the promised land,

  540. Stephen notes

  541. in verse 9

  542. that God was with him

  543. in the foreign land.

  544. And by God's favor,

  545. Joseph rose to become

  546. a ruler over Egypt.

  547. And during the time

  548. of the great famine

  549. all over Egypt and Canaan,

  550. God used Joseph

  551. to summon all of Jacob

  552. and his household

  553. to live in Egypt

  554. because in Egypt

  555. there was still grain

  556. because of God-given wisdom

  557. that Joseph had.

  558. So once again,

  559. the 12 patriarchs

  560. during this time

  561. did not live

  562. in the land of Canaan,

  563. but in Egypt

  564. where God's nonetheless

  565. blessed them

  566. and prospered them.

  567. Of course,

  568. Stephen is aware

  569. that Joseph specifically

  570. asked his brothers

  571. in Genesis 48-25

  572. to carry his bones

  573. from Egypt

  574. and to bury them

  575. in the land of Canaan

  576. after his death.

  577. This was his expression

  578. of his faith

  579. in God's promise

  580. to Abraham

  581. that he would occupy

  582. the promised land.

  583. But then,

  584. even in recounting

  585. that detail,

  586. Stephen highlights

  587. in verse 16

  588. that they were carried

  589. back to Shechem

  590. and laid in the tomb

  591. that Abraham had bought

  592. for a sum of silver

  593. from the sons of Hamor

  594. in Shechem.

  595. The city of Shechem

  596. mentioned twice here

  597. is significant

  598. because it's

  599. a Samaritan city

  600. at the foot

  601. of Mount Gerizim,

  602. the holiest site

  603. in Samaritan worship.

  604. As some of you

  605. might recall

  606. from Jesus' dialogue

  607. with the Samaritan woman

  608. in John chapter 4,

    John 4 chapter mention

  609. there was bad blood

  610. between Jews

  611. and Samaritans.

  612. They avoided each other

  613. like a plague

  614. because the Samaritans

  615. were descendants

  616. of Jews

  617. after the Assyrian invasion

  618. who had remained

  619. in the land

  620. that was occupied

  621. by their conquerors.

  622. They stayed

  623. and settled there

  624. and intermarried

  625. with the Assyrians.

  626. And because of this,

  627. the Jews saw them

  628. not only as political rebels

  629. but also as racial half-breeds

  630. whose religion

  631. had been adulterated.

  632. And one notable difference

  633. between Samaritan worship

  634. and Jewish worship

  635. was that Samaritans

  636. constructed a rival temple

  637. on Mount Gerizim

  638. at Shechem.

  639. And the Jews

  640. worshipped on Mount Zion

  641. in Jerusalem.

  642. And Stephen

  643. makes it a point

  644. to emphasize

  645. that Joseph,

  646. a patriarch

  647. that the Jews revered,

  648. is not buried

  649. in Jerusalem,

  650. not in Judea,

  651. but in Shechem,

  652. in Samaria.

  653. This is yet another way

  654. that Stephen

  655. is undercutting

  656. the Jewish contention

  657. that the gracious presence

  658. of God

  659. is confined

  660. to Jerusalem

  661. and its temple.

  662. moving on

  663. from Joseph,

  664. Stephen recounts

  665. the story of Moses,

  666. which is the longest

  667. section of this speech,

  668. verses 17 to 43.

  669. And here, too,

  670. he emphasizes

  671. the same theme.

  672. He notes that

  673. because of a wicked Pharaoh

  674. who threatened

  675. to kill

  676. the Jewish infants,

  677. in fact did,

  678. the Jews were forced

  679. to expose their infants

  680. to the elements.

  681. And Moses was exposed,

  682. it says in verses 21 and 22,

  683. it was the Egyptian Pharaoh's

  684. daughter

  685. who adopted him

  686. and brought him up

  687. as her own son.

  688. And Moses was instructed

  689. in all the wisdom

  690. of the Egyptians

  691. and he was mighty

  692. in his words

  693. and deeds.

  694. The Moses

  695. that the Jews revered,

  696. the person

  697. that the Jews revered

  698. above all other forefathers,

  699. was born a Jew

  700. but reared

  701. as an Egyptian.

  702. And not only that,

  703. when Moses tried

  704. to come to the defense

  705. of his fellow Israelites

  706. and struck down

  707. an Egyptian

  708. who was oppressing

  709. his fellow Jew,

  710. they rejected him

  711. saying,

  712. who made you a ruler

  713. and a judge over us?

  714. And it's their rejection,

  715. his Jewish brethren's

  716. rejection of Moses

  717. that made him free,

  718. he says,

  719. to become an exile

  720. in the land of Midian.

  721. Once again,

  722. a sojourner,

  723. an exile,

  724. removed from

  725. the promised land.

  726. After another 40 years,

  727. he says in verse 30,

  728. an angel appeared to him

  729. in the wilderness

  730. of Mount Sinai

  731. in a flame,

  732. a fire,

  733. and a bush.

  734. And when God spoke there,

  735. he says in verse 33,

  736. he said,

  737. take off the sandals

  738. from your feet

  739. for the place

  740. where you are standing

  741. is holy ground.

  742. Later,

  743. Jewish rabbis

  744. commented on this

  745. saying that

  746. God's revelation

  747. in the wilderness

  748. proves once and for all

  749. that there is no place

  750. that is too desolate

  751. for the presence of God.

  752. That's a similar point

  753. that Stephen is making here.

  754. Where did God

  755. appear to Moses?

  756. Not in Jerusalem,

  757. but in the wilderness.

  758. Not in Mount Sion,

  759. but on Mount Sinai.

  760. The Jews charged Stephen

  761. in verse 13 of chapter 6

  762. with speaking against

  763. this holy place,

  764. but Stephen insists

  765. that even the desolate

  766. wilderness of Sinai

  767. was consecrated

  768. and became

  769. a holy place

  770. when God revealed

  771. himself there.

  772. In other words,

  773. Jerusalem and its temple

  774. are not the only

  775. holy place.

  776. The holy place

  777. is wherever

  778. God's Spirit rests.

  779. all this serves

  780. to make the point

  781. that being a sojourner

  782. and an exile

  783. is the norm

  784. and not the exception

  785. in the life

  786. of God's people.

  787. That God's presence

  788. is not limited

  789. to Jerusalem

  790. and the temple.

  791. And even when

  792. God's people

  793. finally did come

  794. to occupy Jerusalem

  795. and built the temple,

  796. they did so

  797. with the understanding

  798. that God cannot

  799. be confined

  800. to such physical locales.

  801. to make this point,

  802. Stephen mentions

  803. in verses 44 to 45

  804. that the tabernacle,

  805. the tent of witness,

  806. which was the portable tent

  807. where the Israelites

  808. worshipped and made

  809. sacrifices and such

  810. during their time

  811. in the wilderness,

  812. that this tabernacle

  813. preceded the temple

  814. of God

  815. and God's presence

  816. moved with it.

  817. And even after

  818. conquering

  819. the land of Canaan

  820. in Joshua 18.1,

  821. this tent,

  822. the tabernacle,

  823. was set up

  824. in Shiloh

  825. and people

  826. continued

  827. to worship God

  828. there

  829. for approximately

  830. 300 years

  831. until the time

  832. of David.

  833. And when time

  834. finally came

  835. for them

  836. to build

  837. the great temple,

  838. it wasn't David

  839. the great king

  840. who built the temple,

  841. but it was

  842. his son Solomon.

  843. And when Solomon

  844. was dedicating

  845. the temple,

  846. Solomon himself

  847. said in 1 Kings 18

    1 Kings 18:27

  848. verse 27,

  849. Solomon well

  850. understood this

  851. and Stephen

  852. does as well.

  853. And so Stephen

  854. says in verse 48,

  855. the most high

  856. does not dwell

  857. in houses

  858. made by hands.

  859. And to drive

  860. that point home,

  861. he cites

  862. Isaiah 66

    Isaiah 66:1–2

  863. verses 1-2

  864. in verses 49-50,

  865. saying,

  866. heaven is my throne,

  867. where God says,

  868. heaven is my throne

  869. and the earth

  870. is my footstool.

  871. What kind of house

  872. will you build

  873. for me,

  874. says the Lord?

  875. Or what is the place

  876. of my rest?

  877. Did not my hand

  878. make all these things?

  879. How can the God

  880. who created

  881. the cosmos

  882. dwell,

  883. be confined

  884. to a man-made

  885. temple?

  886. How can the

  887. Most High God

  888. be constricted

  889. to such a lowly

  890. place on earth?

  891. It's absurd

  892. to think that God

  893. can be confined

  894. to a physical

  895. location.

  896. The temple

  897. was never meant

  898. to be

  899. the permanent

  900. exclusive dwelling

  901. place of God.

  902. It was a type,

  903. a shadow

  904. of the reality

  905. to come.

  906. And that reality

  907. is Jesus.

  908. In Jesus,

  909. the Son of God

  910. took on human

  911. flesh and became

  912. simultaneously

  913. Son of Man.

  914. And it says,

  915. in Him,

  916. the whole fullness

  917. of deity

  918. dwells bodily

  919. in Colossians 2

    Colossians 2:9

  920. verse 9.

  921. But that's not

  922. the end of the story.

  923. This amazing

  924. condescension of God

  925. in taking on

  926. human flesh

  927. continues in

  928. Colossians 2

    Colossians 2:10

  929. verse 10

  930. when he says

  931. that to believers,

  932. you have been

  933. filled in Him

  934. who is the head

  935. of all rule

  936. and authority.

  937. This is similar

  938. to what Paul says

  939. in Ephesians 1

  940. 22-23

  941. that God gave

  942. Christ as head

  943. over all things

  944. to the church

  945. which is His body,

  946. the fullness

  947. of Him

  948. who fills

  949. all in all.

  950. Human beings

  951. were alienated

  952. from God

  953. due to their sin

  954. and guilt

  955. before God.

  956. And God

  957. was alienated

  958. from human beings,

  959. sinful human beings

  960. because of His

  961. righteous wrath

  962. towards sinners.

  963. But by dying

  964. on the cross

  965. for our sins,

  966. Jesus

  967. simultaneously

  968. removes our guilt

  969. and satisfies

  970. God's wrath

  971. so that we can

  972. be reconciled

  973. to God.

  974. and when Jesus

  975. died on the cross,

  976. the curtain

  977. of the temple

  978. was torn in two,

  979. indicating that

  980. the barrier

  981. between God

  982. and man

  983. had been

  984. torn down.

  985. And now Jesus

  986. is the one

  987. mediator

  988. between God

  989. and man

  990. and when we

  991. repent of our sins

  992. and believe in Jesus,

  993. His death

  994. and His resurrection

  995. on our behalf,

  996. we are united

  997. to Jesus

  998. by faith.

  999. we become

  1000. one with Him,

  1001. we become

  1002. His body

  1003. and by extension

  1004. because Jesus

  1005. is the temple

  1006. of God,

  1007. we ourselves

  1008. become temple

  1009. of the Holy Spirit

  1010. as 1 Corinthians

  1011. 3 says.

  1012. And that's why

  1013. where we meet

  1014. for corporate worship

  1015. is ultimately

  1016. not important.

  1017. We are looking

  1018. hard right now

1019. for a place to meet,

  1020. for a permanent

  1021. home for our church.

  1022. But in light

  1023. of this truth,

  1024. it's not ultimately

  1025. important.

  1026. we can worship

  1027. God at a building

  1028. dedicated to His

  1029. worship like this

  1030. place,

  1031. or at a rented

  1032. school facility

  1033. like we used to,

  1034. or even outdoors.

  1035. The Spirit of God

  1036. indwells God's

  1037. people.

  1038. The church

  1039. is the gathered

  1040. people of God.

  1041. So it's not

  1042. inside a church

  1043. building,

  1044. but wherever we are

  1045. gathered as God's

  1046. people,

  1047. that God

  1048. is present.

  1049. And this is such

  1050. a wonderful

  1051. privilege.

  1052. Think about it.

  1053. God dwells

  1054. with us.

  1055. All of the other

  1056. major religions

  1057. have pilgrimages

  1058. to sites

  1059. that they deem

  1060. holy.

  1061. You have to make

  1062. long,

  1063. arduous journeys

  1064. in order to make

  1065. merit

  1066. by visiting

  1067. these holy sites.

  1068. Every other

  1069. major world

  1070. religion has this.

  1071. but true

  1072. biblical Christianity

  1073. has no such

  1074. requirement.

  1075. God is not

  1076. over there

  1077. in the distant

  1078. land,

  1079. in some holy

  1080. place quarantined

  1081. from rest of

  1082. sinful humanity.

  1083. He is with

  1084. us.

  1085. He is

  1086. imminent.

  1087. He inhabits

  1088. us.

  1089. He befriends

  1090. us.

  1091. us.

  1092. Look at the

  1093. intimate way

  1094. in which

  1095. Revelation 3

  1096. 20 describes

  1097. God's indwelling

  1098. presence among

  1099. us.

  1100. The Lord Jesus

  1101. says,

  1102. Behold,

  1103. I stand at

  1104. the door

  1105. and knock.

  1106. If anyone

  1107. hears my

  1108. voice and

  1109. opens the

  1110. door,

  1111. I will come

  1112. into him

  1113. and eat

  1114. with him

  1115. and he

  1116. with me.

  1117. The living

  1118. God comes

  1119. into our

  1120. home.

  1121. into our

  1122. life,

  1123. into our

  1124. body,

  1125. he dines

  1126. with us.

  1127. You get

  1128. that in no

  1129. other religion.

  1130. God comes

  1131. to

  1132. God.

  1133. God

  1134. is

  1135. God.

  1136. And the

  1137. implication of

  1138. this is that

  1139. we can't

  1140. box God

  1141. in.

  1142. We can't

  1143. set him

  1144. aside somewhere

  1145. in a neat

  1146. little box

  1147. where he

  1148. doesn't disturb

  1149. our lives.

  1150. God

  1151. God

  1152. is

  1153. God.

  1154. This is

  1155. Stephen's

  1156. main charge

  1157. against his

  1158. fellow Jews.

  1159. The problem

  1160. is not the

  1161. temple itself.

  1162. The problem

  1163. is the way

  1164. they use

  1165. the temple

  1166. to box

  1167. God in,

  1168. to try to

  1169. contain him

  1170. and control

  1171. him.

  1172. In a

  1173. similar way,

  1174. people nowadays

  1175. reduce God

  1176. to amulets

  1177. and pendants

  1178. and talismans,

  1179. as if we

  1180. can put God

  1181. in our

  1182. pockets and

  1183. carry him

  1184. around like

  1185. a good luck

  1186. charm.

  1187. We reduce

  1188. God to

  1189. rituals and

  1190. formulas and

  1191. legal requirements

  1192. as if we

  1193. can control

  1194. him and

  1195. manipulate him

  1196. to do what

  1197. we want him

  1198. to do.

  1199. As one of the

  1200. prayers we

  1201. sometimes use

  1202. for a confession

  1203. of sin says,

  1204. we often

  1205. worship not

  1206. your true

  1207. self, but

  1208. who we wish

  1209. you to be.

  1210. We too

  1211. often ask you

  1212. to bless

  1213. what we

  1214. do,

  1215. rather than

  1216. seeking to

  1217. do what

  1218. you bless.

  1219. Forgive us

  1220. for seeking

  1221. concessions when

  1222. we should be

  1223. seeking guidance.

  1224. Forgive us

  1225. when our

  1226. worship shapes

  1227. you into

  1228. what we

  1229. want,

  1230. instead of

  1231. shaping us

  1232. into what

  1233. you want.

  1234. In what

  1235. ways have

  1236. you compartmentalized

  1237. God in your

  1238. life?

  1239. Sunday

  1240. worship is

  1241. God's

  1242. time, but

  1243. the rest

  1244. of the

  1245. week is

  1246. mine.

  1247. Is that

  1248. your attitude?

  1249. No,

  1250. every hour

  1251. of your

  1252. life you

  1253. are alive

  1254. to glorify

  1255. God.

  1256. A tithe of

  1257. my income

  1258. belongs to

  1259. God, but

  1260. the rest of

  1261. the paycheck

  1262. is mine.

  1263. Is that

  1264. your attitude?

  1265. No,

  1266. every dollar

  1267. in your

  1268. bank account

  1269. is a gift

  1270. from God

  1271. that you

  1272. might glorify

  1273. God with

  1274. it.

  1275. Do you

  1276. behave

  1277. yourself,

  1278. wear nice

  1279. clothes and

  1280. abstain from

  1281. profanity and

  1282. put on a

  1283. smile during a

  1284. worship service

  1285. only to live

  1286. in a way

  1287. that is

  1288. completely

  1289. contrary to

  1290. the gospel

  1291. of Jesus

  1292. Christ the

  1293. rest of the

  1294. week?

  1295. God cannot

  1296. be contained.

  1297. He cannot

  1298. be boxed

  1299. in and

  1300. set aside

  1301. so that our

  1302. life and

  1303. worship is

  1304. compartmentalized.

  1305. Our entire

  1306. life is

  1307. supposed to

  1308. be a

  1309. living sacrifice,

  1310. a spiritual

  1311. worship to

  1312. God because

  1313. our bodies

  1314. themselves are

  1315. the temple

  1316. of the

  1317. living God.

  1318. That's

  1319. Stephen's

  1320. charge,

  1321. his defense.

  1322. The

  1323. Sanhedrin's

  1324. second charge

  1325. against Stephen

  1326. was that he

  1327. spoke against

  1328. the law of

  1329. Moses,

  1330. that he

  1331. told them

  1332. not to

  1333. follow Moses'

  1334. customs,

  1335. the customs

  1336. handed down

  1337. to them by

  1338. Moses.

  1339. And Stephen

  1340. answers this

  1341. charge by

  1342. demonstrating that

  1343. Jesus is the

  1344. new and

  1345. greater Moses,

  1346. who instead of

  1347. merely giving the

  1348. law engraved in

  1349. stone, who now

  1350. engraves the

  1351. very law of God

  1352. onto our hearts

  1353. so that we can

  1354. actually obey

  1355. him.

  1356. Even before

  1357. Moses, God

  1358. had ordained that

  1359. he would deliver

  1360. his people from

  1361. the upcoming

  1362. famine by making

  1363. Joseph a ruler

  1364. over them.

1365. So this is part of

  1366. the history that

  1367. Stephen recounts.

  1368. And he revealed

  1369. this to Joseph in

  1370. a dream that he

  1371. would be a ruler

  1372. over God's people,

  1373. that he would be

  1374. used by him to

  1375. rescue them.

  1376. But Joseph's

  1377. brothers, the

  1378. patriarchs, were

  1379. jealous of Joseph.

  1380. They rejected

  1381. him and sold

  1382. him into slavery

  1383. in Egypt.

  1384. Much like the

  1385. Jewish leaders,

  1386. who are filled

  1387. with jealousy,

  1388. as it says in

  1389. Acts chapter 5,

    Acts 5:17

  1390. verse 17,

  1391. and Acts chapter

    Acts 13:45

  1392. 13, verse 45,

  1393. and in Acts

    Acts 17:5

  1394. chapter 17,

  1395. verse 5,

  1396. there's a

  1397. recurring theme.

  1398. He's setting up

  1399. a pattern that

  1400. the Jews that are

  1401. persecuting Christians

  1402. actually fit the

  1403. pattern of those

  1404. who reject God's

  1405. prophets and his

  1406. messengers time

  1407. and time again

  1408. out of jealousy.

  1409. And not only

  1410. Joseph, but Moses,

  1411. the lawgiver himself,

  1412. was rejected by

  1413. the Israelites.

  1414. Chapter 7,

  1415. verse 22,

  1416. described Moses

  1417. as mighty in his

  1418. words and deeds.

  1419. That's a phrase

  1420. that's not actually

  1421. found in the book

  1422. of Exodus,

  1423. but it's a phrase

  1424. that's actually found

  1425. later in Acts chapter,

1426. or in Luke chapter 24,

    Luke 24:19

  1427. verse 19,

  1428. where Jesus is

  1429. described as mighty

  1430. in deed and word.

  1431. So, immediately,

  1432. Luke is establishing

  1433. a connection between

  1434. Moses and Jesus

  1435. when he describes

  1436. Moses this way.

  1437. And then,

  1438. he further recounts

  1439. in verses 23-25

  1440. that when Moses

  1441. was 40 years old,

  1442. it came into his

  1443. heart to visit

  1444. his brothers,

  1445. and when he tried

  1446. to make peace

  1447. among them

  1448. by trying to

  1449. stop them

  1450. from fighting

  1451. against each other,

  1452. once again,

  1453. the Jews rejected

  1454. Moses,

  1455. retorted to him,

  1456. who made you

  1457. ruler and a judge

  1458. over us?

  1459. Repeatedly,

  1460. Moses is rejected.

  1461. The people don't

  1462. understand that God

  1463. is making him,

  1464. using him to rescue

  1465. them from their

  1466. slavery in Egypt.

  1467. Likewise,

  1468. the Jews,

  1469. in Stephen's day,

  1470. it says,

  1471. acted in ignorance

  1472. in chapter 3,

  1473. verse 17,

  1474. in crucifying Jesus.

  1475. They did not

  1476. understand.

  1477. And Stephen says

  1478. in verse 35-38

  1479. that this Moses

  1480. whom they rejected

  1481. as their ruler

  1482. and judge,

  1483. God himself

  1484. has made

  1485. both ruler

  1486. and redeemer.

  1487. He uses

  1488. Moses

  1489. to perform

  1490. signs and wonders.

  1491. He uses Moses

  1492. to speak

  1493. God's living

  1494. oracles.

  1495. And this,

  1496. once again,

  1497. establishes the

  1498. parallels to Jesus.

  1499. Like Moses

  1500. who performed

  1501. signs and wonders,

  1502. Jesus is described

  1503. as attested

  1504. to God

  1505. by mighty works

  1506. and wonders

  1507. and signs

  1508. in Acts chapter 2,

    Acts 2:22

  1509. verse 22.

  1510. Like Moses

  1511. was rejected

  1512. by his fellow Jews

  1513. from being ruler

  1514. and judge,

  1515. but nonetheless

  1516. appointed ruler

  1517. and judge

  1518. and redeemer,

  1519. Jesus is rejected,

  1520. but then God

  1521. appoints him,

  1522. it says in Acts

    Acts 5:31

  1523. chapter 5,

  1524. verse 31,

  1525. leader and savior

  1526. to give repentance

  1527. to Israel

  1528. and forgiveness

  1529. of sins.

  1530. In short,

  1531. Jesus is

  1532. the prophet

  1533. like Moses

  1534. that Moses

  1535. himself

  1536. had prophesied

  1537. that God

  1538. would raise up

  1539. in Deuteronomy

    Deuteronomy 18:15

  1540. chapter 18,

  1541. verse 15.

  1542. So it's no surprise

  1543. then that the Jews

  1544. in Stephen's day

  1545. reject Jesus

  1546. the same way

  1547. their forefathers

  1548. rejected Moses.

  1549. verses 39

  1550. to 40

  1551. and following

  1552. Stephen

  1553. talks about

  1554. how the Jews

  1555. continually

  1556. turned back

  1557. in their hearts

  1558. toward Egypt,

  1559. made an idol,

  1560. a golden calf,

  1561. and worshipped

  1562. other gods.

  1563. He quotes

  1564. from Amos

  1565. 5,

  1566. 25 to 27

  1567. there.

  1568. And having

  1569. observed

  1570. this pattern

  1571. in Israel's

  1572. history

  1573. of rejecting

  1574. God's

  1575. bookspersons,

  1576. Stephen challenges

  1577. the Jews

  1578. in verses

  1579. 51 to 53.

  1580. He says,

  1581. You stiff-necked

  1582. people,

  1583. uncircumcised

  1584. in heart and ears,

  1585. you always resist

  1586. the Holy Spirit

  1587. and as your

  1588. fathers did,

  1589. so do you.

  1590. Which of the

  1591. prophets

  1592. did your fathers

  1593. not persecute?

  1594. And they killed

  1595. those who announced

  1596. beforehand

  1597. the coming

  1598. of the righteous

  1599. one,

  1600. whom you have

  1601. now betrayed

  1602. and murdered.

  1603. As he did

  1604. earlier,

  1605. Stephen is now

  1606. again

  1607. distancing himself

  1608. from his

  1609. fellow Jews.

  1610. Previously,

  1611. he spoke of

  1612. our fathers,

  1613. but now he

  1614. says,

  1615. Your fathers

  1616. did.

  1617. He's trying

  1618. to make the

  1619. point that he's

  1620. trying to tell

  1621. them what

  1622. separates Stephen,

  1623. what separates

  1624. him from the

  1625. rest of the

  1626. Jews.

  1627. It's his

  1628. submission to,

  1629. his listening

  1630. to Jesus

  1631. as God's

  1632. chosen Messiah,

  1633. unlike his

  1634. fellow Jews

  1635. who reject

  1636. him.

  1637. The charge

  1638. of being

  1639. a stiff-necked

  1640. people,

  1641. of course,

  1642. was the

  1643. charge that

  1644. the Old

  1645. Testament uses

  1646. over and

  1647. over again

  1648. to refer

  1649. to God's

  1650. people and

  1651. their

  1652. rejection

  1653. of him.

  1654. And so

  1655. it's a

  1656. stinging

  1657. charge.

  1658. And even

  1659. though the

  1660. Jews took

  1661. pride in the

  1662. fact that

  1663. God gave

  1664. Abraham the

  1665. covenant of

  1666. circumcision,

  1667. he now calls

  1668. these proud

  1669. descendants of

  1670. Abraham

  1671. uncircumcised

  1672. in hearts

  1673. and ears.

  1674. once again,

  1675. Moses himself

  1676. had prophesied

  1677. in Deuteronomy

  1678. 30 that

  1679. one day

  1680. God would

  1681. circumcise

  1682. our hearts

  1683. so that we

  1684. can actually

  1685. obey him.

  1686. Prophet

  1687. Ezekiel in

  1688. chapter 36

  1689. also said

  1690. that God

  1691. would give

  1692. us a new

  1693. heart and

  1694. a new

  1695. spirit and

  1696. cause us to

  1697. walk in his

  1698. statutes.

  1699. This promise

  1700. is fulfilled

  1701. ultimately by

  1702. the person

  1703. and work

  1704. of Jesus

  1705. Christ.

  1706. As it

  1707. says in

  1708. Romans 2

  1709. 28-29,

  1710. what matters

  1711. is not

  1712. physical

  1713. circumcision,

  1714. but the

  1715. circumcision

  1716. of the

  1717. heart.

  1718. And that

  1719. circumcision

  1720. of the

  1721. heart is

  1722. performed

  1723. not by

  1724. human hands,

  1725. but it

  1726. says by

  1727. the spirit

  1728. in Romans

  1729. 2-29.

  1730. it's

  1731. when we

  1732. have the

  1733. obedience

  1734. of faith

  1735. to Jesus

  1736. Christ,

  1737. when we

  1738. accept him

  1739. as our

  1740. Lord and

  1741. Savior,

  1742. as the

  1743. Messiah sent

  1744. by God

  1745. for our

  1746. redemption,

  1747. to be our

  1748. ruler and

  1749. king,

  1750. that's when

  1751. we are

  1752. indwelled by

  1753. the spirit

  1754. of God.

  1755. So

  1756. according to

  1757. Stephen,

  1758. it's not

  1759. him who

  1760. has rejected

  1761. the law

  1762. of Moses.

  1763. Moses.

  1764. It's his

  1765. Jewish

  1766. accusers who

  1767. have rejected

  1768. Moses,

  1769. because they

  1770. have rejected

  1771. the prophet

  1772. like Moses

  1773. that Moses

  1774. himself

  1775. prophesied

  1776. of.

  1777. These Jews

  1778. sought to

  1779. justify

  1780. themselves by

  1781. keeping the

  1782. letter of

  1783. the law

  1784. when God

  1785. himself had

  1786. ordained that

  1787. we should be

  1788. justified by

  1789. faith in

  1790. Jesus Christ.

  1791. These Jews

  1792. put their

  1793. confidence in

  1794. their own

  1795. flesh, in

  1796. the trappings,

  1797. the external

  1798. trappings of

  1799. religion,

  1800. rather than in

  1801. the inward

  1802. testimony of

  1803. the Holy

  1804. Spirit.

  1805. Do you

  1806. put your

  1807. confidence in

  1808. the external

  1809. religious

  1810. trappings?

  1811. Do you

  1812. put your

  1813. confidence in

  1814. your religious

  1815. heritage,

  1816. your pedigree,

  1817. your father

  1818. as a pastor

  1819. or a seminary

  1820. professor,

  1821. that your

  1822. family has

  1823. been Christians

  1824. for many

  1825. generations?

  1826. Many Jews

  1827. of Stephen's

  1828. day could say

  1829. the same

  1830. thing, and

  1831. yet they were

  1832. uncircumcised in

  1833. hearts and

  1834. ears.

  1835. Do you put

  1836. your confidence

  1837. in your own

  1838. moral or

  1839. religious

  1840. observance,

  1841. that you go

  1842. to church

  1843. every week,

  1844. that you read

  1845. the Bible and

  1846. pray regularly,

  1847. that you subscribe

  1848. to the right

  1849. theology,

  1850. or that you're

  1851. part of the

  1852. right denomination,

  1853. that you have

  1854. not committed any

  1855. blatant sins

  1856. recently, or that

  1857. you support the

  1858. right social and

  1859. political causes,

  1860. or that you're

  1861. an upstanding

  1862. citizen, or that

  1863. you donate money

  1864. to charity.

  1865. Many Jews of

  1866. Stephen's day could

  1867. say the same

  1868. thing, and yet

  1869. they were

  1870. uncircumcised in

  1871. hearts and

  1872. ears.

  1873. The only way to

  1874. have right standing

  1875. with God, the

  1876. only way to be

  1877. saved is to

  1878. believe in the

  1879. name of Jesus,

  1880. the righteous

  1881. one.

  1882. Instead of

  1883. resisting the

  1884. Holy Spirit, we

  1885. are to yield to

  1886. the Holy Spirit by

  1887. repenting of our

  1888. sins and trusting

  1889. in Jesus Christ

  1890. alone for our

  1891. salvation.

  1892. I want to

  1893. plead with those

  1894. of you who are

  1895. living with guilt

  1896. that hasn't been

  1897. dealt with, or

  1898. with shame in

  1899. your own

  1900. identities.

  1901. stop trying to

  1902. save yourself.

  1903. Stop trying to

  1904. atone for your

  1905. own sins.

  1906. Stop putting your

  1907. confidence in your

  1908. own flesh, in your

  1909. own qualifications,

  1910. as Stephen's

  1911. Jewish contemporaries

  1912. did.

  1913. It's not our own

  1914. labors.

  1915. It's not our own

  1916. righteousness.

  1917. It's not our own

  1918. piety or devotion

  1919. that atones for

  1920. our sins.

  1921. Only those who

  1922. come naked to the

  1923. cross,

  1924. can be clothed

  1925. with the

  1926. righteousness of

  1927. Jesus.

  1928. Only those who

  1929. come empty

  1930. handed to the

  1931. cross of Jesus

  1932. can receive God's

  1933. mercy and be

  1934. filled with the

  1935. Holy Spirit.

  1936. Jesus alone

  1937. saves us.

  1938. Unfortunately,

  1939. Stephen's Jewish

  1940. audience didn't

  1941. heed this warning,

  1942. and instead, we

  1943. are told in

  1944. verses 54 to 58

  1945. that they were

  1946. enraged, they

  1947. ground their teeth

  1948. at him.

  1949. And after hearing

  1950. of Stephen's

  1951. vision of the

  1952. glory of God

  1953. and Jesus

  1954. standing at the

  1955. right hand of

  1956. God, verse 57

  1957. says, they cried

  1958. out with a loud

  1959. voice and stopped

  1960. their ears and

  1961. rushed together at

  1962. him.

  1963. Covering their ears,

  1964. a gesture of

  1965. righteousness,

  1966. self-righteousness,

  1967. saying that I can't

  1968. bear to hear the

  1969. blasphemous words that

  1970. are coming out of

  1971. Stephen's mouth.

1972. But all it does is

  1973. to confirm what

  1974. Stephen said earlier,

  1975. that they are

  1976. uncircumcised in

  1977. their ears.

  1978. They are deaf to

  1979. the truth of

  1980. Jesus.

  1981. They throw Stephen

1982. out of the city and

  1983. stone him to death.

  1984. It's a brutal way

  1985. to die, a

  1986. punishment reserved

  1987. for the most

  1988. heinous of sins in

  1989. the Old Testament,

  1990. sins that threaten

  1991. the very survival of

  1992. the Jewish faith

  1993. community from

  1994. which the Messiah

  1995. had to be born.

  1996. sins like

  1997. blasphemy.

  1998. When stoning

  1999. someone to death,

  2000. they lower you to

  2001. a pit or to a

  2002. valley outside the

  2003. city and then

  2004. starting with the

  2005. witnesses of the

  2006. trial themselves,

  2007. they throw stones

  2008. at you.

  2009. And they don't

  2010. pelt you with these

  2011. little pebbles.

  2012. They crush you by

  2013. hurling large stones

  2014. at you.

  2015. And since this

  2016. happened during the

  2017. trial before the

  2018. Sanhedrin, it

  2019. seems the Sanhedrin

  2020. sanctioned it.

  2021. However, we know

  2022. from John chapter

    John 18 chapter mention

  2023. 18 that the Jews

  2024. did not have the

  2025. right under Roman

  2026. rule to execute

  2027. people.

  2028. They did not have

  2029. the right to meet

  2030. a capital punishment.

2031. So this is not an

  2032. official killing.

  2033. It's not an

  2034. execution.

  2035. This is a

  2036. lynching.

  2037. Unauthorized

  2038. lynching.

  2039. that's how the

  2040. first martyr of the

  2041. faith died.

  2042. But there are

  2043. several details that

  2044. suggest a great

  2045. reversal of what's

  2046. happening.

  2047. In the Mishnah, the

  2048. official commentary of

  2049. the rabbis, of the

  2050. Jewish rabbis, it

  2051. details the steps that

  2052. you're supposed to

  2053. take when you're

  2054. stoning someone to

  2055. death.

  2056. death.

  2057. And it specifies that

  2058. the person that is

  2059. being stoned is

  2060. supposed to be

  2061. stripped of his

  2062. clothing.

  2063. But interestingly, in

  2064. verse 58, it's not

  2065. Stephen, but the

  2066. witnesses, the false

  2067. witnesses who testified

  2068. against him, who are

  2069. stripped of their

  2070. clothing.

  2071. They take their

  2072. garments off and lay

2073. them at the feet of a

  2074. young man named

  2075. Saul.

  2076. The Mishnah also

  2077. specifies that the

  2078. person that's being

  2079. stoned to death is

  2080. supposed to confess at

  2081. the time of his

  2082. stoning and say, may

  2083. my death atone for

  2084. all my sins.

  2085. But instead, Stephen

  2086. prays in verse 60,

  2087. Lord, do not hold

  2088. this sin against

  2089. them.

  2090. Stephen does not

  2091. confess his sin, but

  2092. the sins of his

  2093. accusers and

  2094. persecutors, and he

  2095. pleads for God's

  2096. mercy on their

  2097. behalf.

  2098. And of course, in

  2099. doing this, he's

  2100. following in the

  2101. footsteps of his

  2102. master, Jesus, who

  2103. himself was charged

  2104. with the same

  2105. charge that Stephen

  2106. is being charged

  2107. of, who himself

  2108. had false

  2109. accusers, false

  2110. witnesses brought

  2111. against him, who

  2112. himself was unjustly

  2113. tried and executed,

  2114. and who himself

  2115. cried out, Father,

  2116. into your hands I

  2117. commit my spirit, who

  2118. himself prayed for

  2119. his executioners, saying,

  2120. Father, forgive them,

2121. for they know not what

  2122. they do.

  2123. Luke intentionally

  2124. presents Stephen's

  2125. martyrdom in the

  2126. pattern of Jesus'

  2127. death, because he

  2128. wants to teach us

2129. that this is not an

  2130. isolated incident.

  2131. This is a pattern

  2132. that every Christian

  2133. is called to follow.

  2134. We should not be

  2135. surprised when, as a

  2136. church, we face

  2137. determined and

  2138. organized opposition

  2139. and persecution.

  2140. We should not be

  2141. surprised when people

  2142. launch smear campaigns

2143. against us, or drag us

2144. to court, sue us for

  2145. our allegiance to

  2146. Christ.

2147. But when we suffer in

2148. this way, we must not

  2149. lose hope.

  2150. And there's a

  2151. wonderful hope here

  2152. in verses 55 to 56.

  2153. We are told that

  2154. Stephen sees Jesus at

2155. the right hand of God,

  2156. which is a fulfillment

  2157. of Luke chapter 22,

    Luke 22:69

  2158. verse 69, that Jesus

  2159. himself prophesied when

2160. he was standing on trial

  2161. before the Sanhedrin.

2162. He said that you will

2163. see the Son of Man at

2164. the right hand of God.

  2165. So that's been

  2166. fulfilled.

  2167. So Jesus has been

  2168. vindicated.

  2169. He has been raised

  2170. from the dead, ascended

  2171. to the heaven.

2172. Now he's seated at the

  2173. right hand of the

  2174. Father.

2175. But that's not the only

  2176. thing.

  2177. There's something curious

  2178. here.

2179. He says that the Son of

2180. Man is standing at the

  2181. right hand of God.

2182. This is a curious detail

  2183. because wherever Scripture

  2184. mentions Jesus' session,

  2185. ascension, his ascension

  2186. and being ascended at

2187. the right hand of God,

  2188. he's being seated at

2189. the right hand of God,

  2190. it always specifies that

  2191. he is seated.

  2192. It implies completion,

  2193. that it's finished.

2194. Jesus is sitting at the

  2195. right hand of God.

  2196. But uniquely in this

2197. verse, it says that Jesus

2198. is standing at the right

  2199. hand of God.

  2200. Why is he standing?

  2201. Isaiah chapter 3, verse

    Isaiah 3:13

2202. 13 says that when the

  2203. Lord judges the nations,

  2204. he stands.

2205. When God is about to

  2206. issue his verdict, he

  2207. stands.

2208. So then, this is likely

  2209. connected to what Jesus

2210. said in Luke 12, verse

    Luke 12:8

  2211. 8.

2212. I think we have that on

2213. the screen for you guys

  2214. to look at everyone

  2215. who acknowledges me

  2216. before men.

2217. The Son of Man also

  2218. will acknowledge before

  2219. the angels of God.

  2220. While Stephen is

  2221. being condemned by

  2222. the human court,

  2223. Jesus stands to

  2224. vindicate him.

  2225. While the Sanhedrin

  2226. declares Stephen guilty

  2227. of blasphemy,

  2228. Jesus declares him

  2229. not guilty and

  2230. commends him for

  2231. bearing faithful

  2232. witness to him.

  2233. by every earthly

  2234. appearance, it's Stephen

  2235. who is on trial.

  2236. And it's Stephen who

  2237. is the loser.

  2238. In the heavenly

  2239. court, it's not Stephen

2240. who is on trial, but his

  2241. persecutors who are on

  2242. trial.

  2243. And he is, Stephen

  2244. himself is victorious.

  2245. He is vindicated.

  2246. And we must remember

  2247. this heavenly reality

  2248. when we are persecuted

  2249. for bearing witness to

  2250. Jesus on earth.

  2251. Even when all men

  2252. reject us

  2253. and forsake us,

  2254. Jesus, our Lord,

  2255. will stand for us.

  2256. For all of those

2257. who are faithful to him

  2258. till the end.

  2259. Let's pray.

  2260. Heavenly Father,

  2261. Lord,

  2262. we do not desire

  2263. the applause of men.

  2264. Lord, we do not

2265. want to make a name

  2266. for ourselves here on

  2267. earth.

  2268. but Lord,

2269. from our heart of hearts,

2270. from the depth of our

  2271. innermost being,

  2272. we desire

  2273. the commendation of our

  2274. Lord,

  2275. our King Jesus,

  2276. standing up

  2277. to vindicate us,

  2278. to receive us

  2279. into his kingdom,

2280. and to say to us,

  2281. well done,

  2282. my good

  2283. and faithful servant.

  2284. God,

  2285. we cannot

  2286. bear faithful witness

  2287. to you

  2288. and acknowledge you

  2289. before men

  2290. without your help.

  2291. So, Lord,

  2292. fill us with your

  2293. Holy Spirit.

  2294. embolden us,

  2295. empower us.

  2296. Let us not,

  2297. let us be

  2298. men and women

  2299. who

  2300. do not

  2301. love their lives

  2302. even unto death.

  2303. And may Jesus

  2304. be exalted

  2305. in our lives.

  2306. In his precious

  2307. name we pray.

  2308. Amen.

  2309. Amen.
