  1. So first, let's turn to Acts chapter 9, verses 32 to 43.

    Acts 9:32–43

  2. And let me pray for the reading and preaching of God's Word.

  3. Heavenly Father, we humble ourselves before your Word again.

  4. And we want to receive your Word as it really is.

  5. Not the words of men, but the Word of God.

  6. Amen.

  7. Grant us the humility and faith that is necessary.

  8. To take you at your Word.

  9. To be challenged, comforted, transformed by it.

  10. For the glory of your name.

  11. In Jesus' name we pray. Amen.

  12. Acts chapter 9, verses 32 to 43.

    Acts 9:32–43

  13. Now, as Peter went here and there among them all, he came down also to the saints who lived at Lydda.

  14. There he found a man named Aeneas, bedridden for eight years, who was paralyzed.

  15. And Peter said to him, Aeneas, Jesus Christ heals you.

  16. Rise and make your bed.

  17. And immediately he rose.

  18. And all the residents of Lydda and Sharon saw him and they turned to the Lord.

  19. Now, there was in Joppa a disciple named Tabitha, which translated means Dorcas.

  20. She was full of good works and acts of charity.

  21. In those days, she became ill and died.

  22. And when they had washed her, they laid her in an upper room.

  23. Since Lydda was near Joppa, the disciples, hearing that Peter was there, sent two men to him, urging him,

  24. Please come to us without delay.

  25. So Peter rose and went with them.

  26. And when he arrived, they took him to the upper room.

  27. All the widows stood beside him, weeping and showing tunics and other garments that Dorcas made while she was with them.

  28. But Peter put them all outside and knelt down and prayed.

  29. And turning to the body, he said, Tabitha, arise.

  30. And she opened her eyes, and when she saw Peter, she sat up.

  31. And he gave her his hand and raised her up.

  32. Then, calling the saints and widows, he presented her alive.

  33. And it became known throughout all Joppa, and many believed in the Lord.

  34. And he stayed in Joppa for many days with one Simon, a tanner.

  35. The main point of this passage is that the Lord Jesus Christ continues to work powerfully through his chosen witnesses

  36. to turn many people toward himself.

  37. The summary verse before this was chapter 9, verse 31.

  38. It said that the church throughout all Judea and Galilee and Samaria had peace and was being built up,

  39. and walking in the fear of the Lord and in the comfort of the Holy Spirit, it multiplied.

  40. So our passage continues to tell us how the church was being built up and was multiplying.

  41. It was in verse 33, it says that while ministering in Lydda, Peter found a man named Aeneas, bedridden for eight years, was paralyzed.

  42. So he's been a paralytic for eight years, and he's a man and not a child.

  43. So that means he wasn't paralyzed his entire life.

  44. So something happened to him during his life, something tragic, perhaps a freak accident or a stroke.

  45. And whatever the cause, Aeneas was bedridden now for eight long years.

  46. And Peter says to him, Aeneas, Jesus Christ heals you.

  47. Rise and make your bed.

  48. And the paralytic in faith obeys this command immediately rising from his bed,

  49. which he had not been able to get up off of for eight years.

  50. And then Luke tells us another, even more remarkable story in verses 36 to 42.

  51. Recently, a woman named Tabitha had passed away.

  52. Her Greek name was Dorcas, which means gazelle.

  53. She had died in Joppa.

  54. She was a Christian, which is why she's called a disciple.

  55. And since Lydda, where Peter was staying, was near Joppa,

  56. they rushed some messengers to Peter to have him come to pay a visit.

  57. And they urged him to come without delay, hoping, presumably, that Peter will be able to do something for Dorcas.

  58. Peter arrives on the scene, kneels and prays to God and seeks his healing power.

  59. And then he commands the dead body, Tabitha, arise.

  60. And because Peter speaks with the authorization of the risen Lord,

  61. even the corpse has no choice but to obey.

  62. And Tabitha opens her eyes and sits up.

  63. What's notable about these two instances of healing and resurrection is that they parallel the healing miracles of Jesus' ministry.

  64. Peter's healing of Aeneas of his paralysis parallels Jesus' healing of the paralytic in Luke chapter 5, verses 17 to 26.

    Luke 5:17–26

  65. And Peter's raising of Tabitha parallels Jesus' raising of Jairus' daughter in Luke 8, 49 to 56.

  66. Peter commanded Aeneas in verse 34,

  67. Rise and make your bed, similar to how Jesus commanded the paralytic in Luke chapter 5, verse 24.

    Luke 5:24

  68. Rise, pick up your bed, and go home.

  69. Peter asked everyone to leave the upper room that Tabitha was lying in,

  70. as Jesus did in Luke 8, 51.

  71. When he allowed no one to enter with him to raise the daughter of Jairus from the dead.

  72. And Peter commands, Tabitha, arise.

  73. Just as Jesus said in Luke 8, 54.

  74. Child, arise.

  75. And Peter takes her by the hand,

  76. just as Jesus, in Luke 8, 41, gives her his hand and raises her up.

  77. So the point that Luke is trying to make with these parallels is that it is Jesus who, by his Holy Spirit,

  78. continues to do signs and wonders through his apostles.

  79. Note the way Peter speaks to Aeneas in verse 34.

  80. Aeneas,

  81. Jesus Christ heals you.

  82. Rise and make your bed.

  83. Peter is fully aware that he has no power within himself to heal a paralytic or to raise the dead.

  84. It's Jesus Christ himself who is doing these very things.

  85. Look also at the outcome of these miracles.

  86. After Aeneas is healing,

  87. the result is not Peter becoming more famous

  88. and gaining more fans and followers,

  89. but repentance and faith.

  90. It says in verse 35,

  91. And all the residents of Lydda and Sharon saw him,

  92. and they turned toward whom?

  93. Not to Peter, but to the Lord.

  94. They turned to the Lord,

  95. meaning they repented of their sinful ways

  96. and reoriented their lives around the way of Jesus,

  97. trusting in him and following his teachings.

  98. The miraculous signs do not bring attention to themselves,

  99. but point to the person and work of Jesus Christ.

  100. And the witnesses of Jesus, including Peter,

  101. do not turn people's attention toward themselves,

  102. but toward Jesus.

  103. We see the same pattern after Tabitha is raised from the dead in verse 42.

  104. He says,

  105. And it became known throughout all Joppa,

  106. and many believed in the Lord.

  107. The effect of these signs and wonders

  108. is to turn people to repentance and faith in Jesus Christ.

  109. Have you turned toward Jesus?

  110. That means to reorient your life,

  111. your entire life,

  112. around him.

  113. That means to repent of your sins.

  114. Consider for a moment

  115. the direction of your life.

  116. Is it on the way of Christ?

  117. Or are you doing your own thing?

  118. Going about your own way?

  119. No one is saved by proximity.

  120. Having some Christian friends will not save you.

  121. Having attended church worship on occasion will not save you.

  122. Getting involved with Christian charitable organizations will not save you.

  123. Have you personally turned toward Jesus in your own life?

  124. Have you trusted in Jesus?

  125. Have you believed in Jesus?

  126. That means to entrust your entire life to him.

  127. To put your faith in him

  128. and nothing else for your salvation.

  129. Paralyzed, Aeneas, on the one hand,

  130. and dead, Tabitha on the other,

  131. are both highly apt pictures

  132. of our spiritual condition apart from Jesus.

  133. Aeneas could never get off his bed

  134. on his own.

  135. Never.

  136. Tabitha could not lift a finger

  137. to do anything for herself.

  138. Likewise, we can do absolutely nothing

  139. to save ourselves,

  140. and that's the consistent testimony of Scriptures

  141. Ephesians 2, verse 4 says,

    Ephesians 2:4

  142. But God, being rich in mercy,

  143. because of the great love with which he loved us,

  144. even when we were dead in our trespasses,

  145. made us alive together with Jesus.

  146. By grace you have been saved.

  147. God does not let us bring any of our own merit

  148. of righteousness to him

  149. because he has determined to save us

  150. by his grace alone

  151. for his glory alone.

  152. None of us has sufficient merit

  153. or spiritual, moral standing

  154. to earn our salvation.

  155. No one.

  156. No one in this room.

  157. No one in this entire world.

  158. In fact, we all have a mountain of demerit.

  159. We have a debt we could never hope to repay

  160. because of our sins.

  161. But Jesus died for us on the cross

  162. and in our place

  163. to pay our debt,

  164. and he was raised from the dead

  165. so that we might live forever.

  166. So that we might have salvation.

  167. That's the good news of Jesus Christ

  168. that this healing and raising

  169. of Tabitha and Ineos is a picture of.

  170. Now let me turn to my second topical sermon

  171. that I told you guys about

  172. on women in ministry.

  173. We are a complementarian church

  174. which believes that men and women

  175. have complementary,

  176. interdependent roles

  177. as opposed to interchangeable roles,

  178. both in the home and in the church.

  179. More explicitly,

  180. we believe that in marriage,

  181. God calls husbands to headship

  182. and wives to helpership

  183. in accordance with Genesis 2, 18-25

  184. and Ephesians 5, 22-33.

  185. Similarly, we believe that in the church,

  186. God calls only men to teach

  187. and exercise authority over the church

  188. in accordance with 1 Timothy 2, 8-15,

  189. which means at minimum

  190. that only men may be elders and pastors,

  191. while women are called

  192. to utilize their various gifts

  193. in other contexts of the church body.

  194. And it's that latter question

  195. that I want to address today.

  196. What can women do in the church?

  197. What does women in ministry look like?

  198. This question was raised

  199. by several members of our church

  200. at our members' meeting in 2020

  201. and so when we were first

  202. scheduling out our series

  203. in the book of Acts,

  204. we had planned to address this

  205. as a topical sermon

  206. at this point of the book.

  207. And we see the ministry

  208. of many men throughout the book of Acts,

  209. but the essential

  210. and indispensable ministry of women

  211. often is missed.

  212. And so we're going to survey

  213. the book of Acts

  214. to look at women in the early church

  215. and their involvement in ministry

  216. and bring in other scripture passages

  217. as well to illuminate this subject.

  218. And though the sermon

  219. is primarily addressed

  220. toward our sisters,

  221. men will find plenty to glean

  222. from God's word

  223. because much of this

  224. applies to you as well.

  225. So let's begin with the passage

  226. that we already looked at today,

  227. Acts 9, 36-43.

  228. First, it says in verse 36,

  229. Now there was in Joppa

  230. a disciple named Tabitha,

  231. which translated means Dorcas.

  232. Before we talk about

  233. the ministries of women,

  234. we need to first address

  235. their identity

  236. as disciples of Jesus Christ.

  237. Women in the church

  238. are disciples of Jesus Christ,

  239. meaning they are discipled

  240. by Jesus Christ

  241. and commissioned to make

  242. disciples of Jesus Christ.

  243. They are taught by Jesus

  244. to follow Him in His way.

  245. At the time of the early church,

  246. Jewish rabbis

  247. did not accept

  248. women disciples.

  249. For example,

  250. Rabbi Eliezer

  251. from the first century

  252. expressed the popular

  253. cultural sentiment

  254. of the day

  255. when he said this,

  256. Rather,

  257. should the words

  258. of the Torah

  259. or the law of God

  260. be burned

  261. than entrusted

  262. to a woman?

  263. Whoever teaches

  264. his daughter the Torah

  265. is like one

  266. who teaches

  267. her lasciviousness.

  268. But in stark contrast,

  269. Jesus

  270. calls every woman

  271. to be

  272. His disciple.

  273. In Luke 8,

  274. 1-3,

  275. we see that outside

  276. of the twelve apostles,

  277. Jesus had a larger group

  278. of disciples

  279. that followed Him around,

  280. a group that included

  281. women like Mary Magdalene,

  282. Joanna,

  283. and Susanna,

  284. among others.

  285. And Jesus'

  286. discipling of women

  287. is beautifully illustrated

  288. in Luke 10,

    Luke 10:39

  289. verse 39,

  290. where when Jesus

  291. enters the home

  292. of Martha,

  293. it says she had

  294. a sister named Mary

  295. who sat at the Lord's feet

  296. and listened to His teaching.

  297. To sit at the Lord's feet

  298. is the technical way

  299. of describing

  300. the posture

  301. and relationship

  302. of a disciple

  303. to his or her teacher.

  304. Sitting at the feet

  305. of a Jewish rabbi

  306. was an exclusive

  307. prerogative reserved

  308. for His disciples.

  309. And that's where

  310. we find Mary.

  311. Acts 22,

    Acts 22:3

  312. verse 3,

  313. says that Paul

  314. was educated

  315. at the feet

  316. of Gamaliel.

  317. Gamaliel would not

  318. have let Mary

  319. sit at his feet

  320. as one of his disciples,

  321. but Jesus does.

  322. He calls every single

  323. one of you,

  324. man and woman,

  325. to be His disciple,

  326. and He commissions you

  327. then to make disciples

  328. of Jesus Christ.

  329. Mary's sister Martha

  330. who was slaving away

  331. in the kitchen

  332. and was frustrated

  333. and angry

  334. with her sister Mary

  335. for sitting at Jesus' feet,

  336. listening to Him

  337. and not helping her

  338. in the kitchen.

  339. So she storms

  340. into the living room

  341. and then confronts Jesus

  342. and says,

  343. Lord, do you not care

  344. that my sister

  345. has left me

  346. to serve alone?

  347. Tell her then

  348. to help me.

  349. But Jesus is unyielding.

  350. He says,

  351. Martha, Martha,

  352. you are anxious

  353. and troubled

  354. about many things,

  355. but one thing

  356. is necessary.

  357. Mary has chosen

  358. the good portion

  359. which will not be

  360. taken away from her.

  361. Mary had chosen

  362. to be with Jesus.

  363. She had chosen

  364. to listen to Jesus

  365. at His feet.

  366. She had chosen

  367. to be His disciple.

  368. In effect,

  369. Jesus is saying,

  370. Martha,

  371. I didn't come

  372. into your house

  373. so I could eat

  374. the delicious meal

  375. that you work hard

  376. to prepare.

  377. I came to your house

  378. that you might be with me.

  379. That you might listen

  380. to me.

  381. The word portion

  382. is a metaphor

  383. for portions of food.

  384. Mary chose to sit

  385. at the Lord's feet

  386. to listen to His teaching,

  387. literally to listen

  388. to His word.

  389. Martha was busy

  390. doling out food,

  391. but Mary had chosen

  392. the better portion

  393. of God's word.

  394. She had chosen

  395. the better dish,

  396. the bread of God

  397. rather than

  398. the bread of man.

  399. Many things

  400. are expected

  401. of women these days.

  402. Many things demand

  403. your time,

  404. energy,

  405. and attention.

  406. But the late

  407. Anne Ortlund,

  408. wife of Pastor

  409. Ray Ortlund Sr.,

  410. counsels women

  411. this way in her book,

  412. Disciplines of the Beautiful Woman.

  413. Quote,

  414. Don't think of yourself

  415. first as a wife

  416. or a single person

  417. or a mother

  418. or a worker

  419. in some field.

  420. You will someday

  421. stand before God

  422. all by yourself.

  423. of course,

  424. God wants you

  425. to be a faithful wife

  426. and a mother

  427. and a worker

  428. and a student,

  429. but never

  430. to the neglect

  431. of being

  432. a disciple

  433. of Jesus Christ.

  434. Are you regularly

  435. sitting at His feet?

  436. Are you listening

  437. to His Word?

  438. Or are you too busy

  439. to listen to anything

  440. He is saying to you?

  441. Rise up,

  442. women of God

  443. who cherish

  444. the Word of God

  445. and prioritize

  446. the worship of God.

  447. So first,

  448. God calls women

  449. to be disciples

  450. of Jesus Christ.

  451. Second,

  452. God calls women

  453. to be ministers

  454. of mercy.

  455. Verse 36 tells us

  456. that Tabitha

  457. was full of good works

  458. and acts of charity.

  459. Verse 39

  460. gives us an example

  461. of the good works

  462. that Tabitha did.

  463. It says,

  464. All the widows

  465. stood beside him

  466. weeping and showing

  467. tunics and other garments

  468. that Dorcas made

  469. while she was with them.

  470. Of course,

  471. every Christian man

  472. or woman

  473. are called to abound

  474. in good works,

  475. but good works

  476. are also specifically

  477. commanded

  478. for Christian women

  479. as their proper

  480. spiritual adornment

  481. in 1 Timothy 2

    1 Timothy 2:9–10

  482. verses 9-10.

  483. It says,

  484. Women should adorn

  485. themselves

  486. in respectable apparel

  487. with modesty

  488. and self-control,

  489. not with braided hair

  490. and gold

  491. or pearls

  492. or costly attire,

  493. but with what is proper

  494. for women

  495. who profess godliness

  496. with good works.

  497. Same phrase.

  498. The proper attire

  499. for Christian women

  500. is not expensive articles

  501. and elaborate adornments

  502. that bring attention

  503. to themselves,

  504. but rather good works

  505. that serve others.

  506. Christian women

  507. should beautify themselves

  508. not with things

  509. that bring attention

  510. to themselves,

  511. but by paying attention

  512. to and serving others.

  513. in the same letter

  514. in 1 Timothy 5,

  515. Paul outlines

  516. qualifications

  517. for widows

  518. who should be enrolled

  519. to receive financial support

  520. from the local church.

  521. He says that,

  522. among other things,

  523. these widows

  524. should have,

  525. quote,

  526. a reputation

  527. for good works.

  528. And he further specifies

  529. these good works

  530. by saying,

  531. if she has brought up

  532. children,

  533. has shown hospitality,

  534. has washed the feet

  535. of the saints,

  536. has cared for the afflicted,

  537. and has devoted herself

  538. to every good work.

  539. The focus of good works

  540. here seems,

  541. in this passage,

  542. seems to be

  543. mercy ministries.

  544. Rearing dependent children,

  545. showing hospitality

  546. to travelers,

  547. washing the feet

  548. of the saints,

  549. caring for the afflicted.

  550. Similarly,

  551. the Greek word

  552. that is translated

  553. charity

  554. comes from the word

  555. that means mercy.

  556. and most often

  557. refers to giving

  558. to the poor.

  559. It's the same word

  560. that was used

  561. in Acts chapter 3,

    Acts 3:2–3

  562. verses 2 to 3,

  563. to describe the lame man

  564. asking for alms

  565. from passerbys.

  566. So once again,

  567. in modern terms,

  568. we might say

  569. that Tabitha

  570. excelled

  571. in mercy ministries.

  572. Her husband

  573. is not mentioned.

  574. We might,

  575. she was surrounded

  576. by widows,

  577. so we could infer

  578. that she was likely

  579. a widow herself.

  580. But she was not

  581. disillusioned

  582. or aimless

  583. in the waning years

  584. of her life.

  585. She was full

  586. of good works.

  587. She had made tunics

  588. and other garments

  589. to clothe

  590. the poor widows

  591. around her.

  592. She probably also

  593. cooked for them

  594. and nursed them

  595. in their sickness.

  596. Tabitha was a pillar

  597. of the early church

  598. in Lydda,

  599. in Joppa.

  600. And her ministry

  601. was invaluable

  602. and indispensable.

  603. It's much like

  604. the diacoma ministry

  605. that we'll be

  606. talking about,

  607. we've talked about

  608. in the past.

  609. These widows

  610. had been so well loved

  611. by Tabitha

  612. that they couldn't

  613. let her go.

  614. They got Peter

  615. and God graciously

  616. raised her from the dead

  617. as a gift

  618. to this church.

  619. There are Tabithas

  620. in our church.

  621. There will be more

  622. Tabithas in our church

  623. in the years to come.

  624. So rise up

  625. to serve,

  626. to do ministries

  627. of mercy,

  628. to wash the feet

  629. of the saints.

  630. Third,

  631. women along with men

  632. are called

  633. to be prayer warriors.

  634. Now turn with me

  635. to the beginning

  636. of the book of Acts,

    Acts 1:14

  637. chapter 1,

  638. verse 14.

  639. It says there,

  640. all these with one accord

  641. were devoting themselves

  642. to prayer

  643. and together

  644. with the woman

  645. and Mary,

  646. the mother of Jesus

  647. and his brothers.

  648. In Acts,

  649. we see Christian women

  650. who are devoted

  651. to prayer,

  652. spending much

  653. of their lives

  654. praying.

  655. 19th century

  656. Pastor Oswald Chambers

  657. says this,

  658. quote,

  659. prayer does not fit us

  660. for the greater work.

  661. Prayer is

  662. the greater work.

  663. When we pray to God,

  664. we are having

  665. conference

  666. with the King of Kings,

  667. the Lord of Lords

  668. himself.

  669. what greater work

  670. is there than that?

  671. His authority

  672. and power

  673. infinitely exceed ours.

  674. Does it not make sense

  675. for us

  676. to ask him

  677. to intervene

  678. and act

  679. instead of taking things

  680. into our own hands

  681. and trying to do

  682. everything ourselves?

  683. I share this

  684. with one of the

  685. women's ministry sessions,

  686. but there was

  687. a great Christian revival

  688. in the Scottish

  689. Islands

  690. called

  691. the Hebrides

  692. in the middle

  693. of the 20th century

  694. and it began

  695. with two sisters,

  696. Peggy

  697. and Christine Smith,

  698. 82

  699. and 84

  700. years old

  701. respectively.

  702. Peggy

  703. was completely

  704. blind,

  705. Christine

  706. was bent over

  707. with arthritis,

  708. but they

  709. were burdened

  710. due to the

  711. depressed

  712. spiritual state

  713. of their

  714. village church.

  715. They sensed

  716. the Lord

  717. speaking to them

  718. about revival

  719. from Isaiah 44

    Isaiah 44:3

  720. verse 3

  721. and so they

  722. began to pray

  723. in their small

  724. cottage

  725. two to three

  726. nights per week

  727. from 10pm

  728. to 3am.

  729. After several

  730. weeks of praying

  731. in this way,

  732. Peggy had a vision

  733. of her church

  734. being crowded

  735. with young people

  736. who at that point

  737. didn't want anything

  738. to do with the church.

  739. And she also

  740. had a vision

  741. of an unknown

  742. preacher

  743. ministering

  744. from the pulpit.

  745. Peggy

  746. then sent

  747. for their

  748. minister,

  749. Reverend James

  750. Murray McKay

  751. and she told

  752. him that they

  753. sensed the Lord

  754. was going to

  755. send revival

  756. and that we

  757. must get

  758. the churches

  759. around in the

  760. area to spend

  761. some dedicated

  762. time in prayer.

  763. Pastor McKay

  764. respected

  765. this sister's

  766. spiritual judgment

  767. and he made

  768. the call

  769. to pray.

  770. And then

  771. later Peggy

  772. Smith also

  773. told her

  774. pastor

  775. James McKay

  776. that he

  777. was supposed

  778. to invite

  779. someone to

  780. preach during

  781. the revival.

  782. But she

  783. didn't know

  784. who he was.

  785. She only

  786. saw her

  787. face in

  788. the vision.

  789. And so

  790. McKay made

  791. some contacts

  792. and found

  793. Duncan Campbell

  794. and asked

  795. him to come.

  796. Campbell

  797. was at that

  798. time already

  799. involved in an

  800. evangelistic campaign

  801. on the island

  802. of Skye

  803. and conversions

  804. were taking

  805. place there.

  806. and so

  807. when he

  808. received

  809. this letter

  810. to come

  811. to the

  812. village

  813. of Barbas

  814. he said

  815. he couldn't

  816. come.

  817. And McKay

  818. Pastor McKay

  819. relayed this

  820. to Sister

  821. Peggy

  822. and she

  823. responded

  824. Mr. McKay

  825. that is what

  826. man is saying

  827. but God

  828. has said

  829. something else

  830. and he

  831. will be here

  832. within a

  833. fortnight.

  834. And due

  835. to a change

  836. of events

  837. lo and behold

  838. Duncan Campbell

  839. came

  840. within 10

  841. days

  842. within a

  843. fortnight.

  844. and as

  845. he preached

  846. the gospel

  847. and the

  848. people

  849. continued

  850. to pray

  851. for revival

  852. the spirit

  853. of God

  854. descended

  855. in power

  856. upon the

  857. Scottish

  858. islands.

  859. People

  860. became aware

  861. of the

  862. palpable

  863. presence

  864. of God.

  865. They were

  866. captured

  867. by the

  868. reality

  869. of eternal

  870. things.

  871. People

  872. were lining

  873. up to attend

  874. church services.

  875. They were

  876. standing room

  877. only and

  878. many many

  879. people

  880. were being

  881. converted

  882. for the

  883. first time.

  884. It all

  885. began

  886. with blind

  887. and arthritic

  888. 80 year old

  889. woman

  890. who had

  891. no physical

  892. vigor

  893. who had

  894. no societal

  895. position

  896. who had

  897. no intellectual

  898. clout

  899. but who

  900. had

  901. spiritual

  902. power

  903. because

  904. they had

  905. direct access

  906. to the

  907. king of

  908. kings

  909. by prayer.

  910. So

  911. rise up

  912. women of

  913. God

  914. prayer

  915. warriors

  916. whose

  917. voices

  918. may

  919. not be

  920. heard

  921. in the

  922. quarters of

  923. power

  924. in this

  925. world

  926. but whose

  927. voices

  928. are heard

  929. and well

  930. known

  931. in the

  932. heavenly

  933. courts.

  934. That

  935. is the

  936. more

  937. powerful

  938. voice.

  939. That

  940. is the

  941. most

  942. important

  943. place

  944. to be

  945. heard.

  946. I think

  947. I have

  948. a picture

  949. of her

  950. up there.

  951. Peggy

  952. and

  953. Christine

  954. Smith.

  955. If you

  956. guys

  957. have

  958. that.

  959. Fourth,

  960. women in

  961. the church

  962. may also

  963. be called

  964. to be

  965. prophetesses

  966. of God.

  967. Prophets

  968. of God.

  969. Please

  970. turn with me

  971. to chapter

  972. 2 verses

  973. 14 to

  974. 18.

  975. Sorry for

  976. making you

  977. searcher all

  978. over scripture.

  979. This is good

  980. practice for

  981. you.

  982. We are

  983. in the

  984. same

  985. book.

  986. You

  987. don't

  988. have

  989. to

  990. look

  991. far.

  992. chapter

  993. 2 verses

  994. 14 to

  995. 18.

  996. There

  997. quoting

  998. Joel 2,

  999. Peter

  1000. explains the

  1001. significance

  1002. of the

  1003. outpouring

  1004. of the

  1005. Holy

  1006. Spirit

  1007. at

  1008. Pentecost

  1009. in

  1010. verses

  1011. 17

  1012. to

  1013. 18.

  1014. He

  1015. says,

  1016. And in

  1017. the last

  1018. days it

  1019. shall

  1020. be,

  1021. God

  1022. declares,

  1023. that I

  1024. will pour

  1025. out my

  1026. spirit on

  1027. all flesh,

  1028. and your

  1029. sons and

  1030. your daughters

  1031. shall

  1032. prophesy,

  1033. and your

  1034. young men

  1035. shall see

  1036. visions,

  1037. and your

  1038. old men

  1039. shall

  1040. dream dreams,

  1041. and on

  1042. my male

  1043. servants and

  1044. female

  1045. servants in

  1046. those days I

  1047. will pour

  1048. out my

  1049. spirit,

  1050. and they

  1051. shall

  1052. prophesy.

  1053. In the

  1054. Old Testament

  1055. period,

  1056. the Spirit

  1057. of God

  1058. came upon

  1059. a select

  1060. group of

  1061. people,

  1062. temporarily

  1063. to help

  1064. them fulfill

  1065. specific

  1066. charges that

  1067. God had

  1068. given them.

  1069. But in

  1070. the New

  1071. Covenant

  1072. Age,

  1073. the Spirit

  1074. of God

  1075. and the

  1076. power

  1077. comes upon

  1078. all those

  1079. who repent

  1080. and are

  1081. baptized in

  1082. the name

  1083. of Jesus

  1084. Christ.

  1085. Whether

  1086. they be

  1087. young or

  1088. old,

  1089. slave or

  1090. free,

  1091. male or

  1092. female.

  1093. This great

  1094. privilege that

  1095. in the Old

  1096. Testament was

  1097. reserved for

  1098. kings,

  1099. prophets,

  1100. priests,

  1101. judges,

  1102. is now

  1103. yours in

  1104. Jesus Christ.

  1105. And in

  1106. 1 Corinthians

  1107. 11,

  1108. Paul gives

  1109. specific

  1110. instructions for

  1111. how women

  1112. should prophesy

  1113. in the context

  1114. of the church

  1115. worship.

  1116. So clearly

  1117. he thinks that

  1118. there are

  1119. prophetesses

  1120. in the church

  1121. who ought to

  1122. share the

  1123. revelation that

  1124. God gives

  1125. them just

  1126. as we

  1127. have earlier

  1128. Jan and

  1129. Lauren share

  1130. the prophecies

  1131. that they

  1132. received from

  1133. God.

  1134. Acts chapter

    Acts 21:9

  1135. 21 verse

  1136. 9 tells us

  1137. that Philip

  1138. the evangelist,

  1139. my role model

  1140. and aspiration

  1141. in raising

  1142. daughters,

  1143. had four

  1144. unmarried

  1145. daughters who

  1146. prophesied.

  1147. God's

  1148. father.

  1149. Where are

  1150. the women

  1151. who will

  1152. rise up

  1153. full of

  1154. the Holy

  1155. Spirit,

  1156. attentive

  1157. and familiar

  1158. with the

  1159. voice of

  1160. the Lord?

  1161. Fifth,

  1162. women in the

  1163. church may

  1164. serve as

  1165. patrons of

  1166. the gospel.

  1167. after Peter

  1168. is rescued

  1169. by God

  1170. from

  1171. imprisonment

  1172. in Acts

    Acts 12 chapter mention

  1173. chapter 12

  1174. it says

  1175. in verse 12

  1176. that he

  1177. went to

  1178. the house

  1179. of Mary

  1180. the mother

  1181. of John

  1182. whose other

  1183. name was

  1184. Mark

  1185. where many

  1186. were gathered

  1187. together

  1188. and were

  1189. praying.

  1190. Here Mary

  1191. was the

  1192. host

  1193. and patron

  1194. of the

  1195. local

  1196. gathering

  1197. of the

  1198. church.

  1199. We see

  1200. a similar

  1201. ministry

  1202. of women

  1203. in Acts

    Acts 16:11–15

  1204. chapter 16

  1205. verses 11

  1206. to 15.

  1207. Please turn

  1208. there with

  1209. me.

  1210. This is

  1211. when Paul

  1212. is preaching

  1213. the gospel

  1214. in the

  1215. city of

  1216. Philippi

  1217. in Acts

    Acts 16:11–15

  1218. 16

  1219. verses 11

  1220. to 15.

  1221. It says

  1222. there

  1223. verses 14

  1224. and 15

  1225. one who

  1226. heard us

  1227. was a

  1228. woman named

  1229. Lydia

  1230. from the

  1231. city of

  1232. Thyatira

  1233. a seller

  1234. of purple

  1235. goods

  1236. who was a

  1237. worshiper

  1238. of God.

  1239. The Lord

  1240. opened her

  1241. heart to

  1242. pay attention

  1243. to what

  1244. was said

  1245. by Paul

  1246. and after

  1247. she was

  1248. baptized

  1249. and her

  1250. household

  1251. as well

  1252. she urged

  1253. us saying

  1254. if you

  1255. have judged

  1256. me to be

  1257. faithful to

  1258. the Lord

  1259. come to

  1260. my house

  1261. and stay

  1262. and she

  1263. prevailed

  1264. upon us.

  1265. Lydia was

  1266. likely widowed

  1267. or divorced

  1268. since her

  1269. husband is

  1270. not mentioned

  1271. and she

  1272. seems to

  1273. be making

  1274. business

  1275. decisions

  1276. independently

  1277. of her

  1278. husband

  1279. and as

  1280. seller of

  1281. purple goods

  1282. she was

  1283. well-to-do

  1284. and she

  1285. used her

  1286. house

  1287. and her

  1288. wealth

  1289. to serve

  1290. the church

  1291. and from

  1292. that point

  1293. on the

  1294. church in

  1295. Philippi

  1296. met in

  1297. Lydia's

  1298. house

  1299. house

  1300. and her

  1301. home

  1302. became

  1303. the

  1304. base

  1305. for

  1306. Paul's

  1307. subsequent

  1308. missionary

  1309. work.

  1310. We saw

  1311. a woman

  1312. playing

  1313. similar

  1314. helping

  1315. and

  1316. supporting

  1317. roles

  1318. in

  1319. Jesus'

  1320. ministry

  1321. as well

  1322. Luke 8

  1323. 1-3

  1324. it says

  1325. that some

  1326. woman who

  1327. had been

  1328. healed of

  1329. evil spirits

  1330. and infirmities

  1331. Mary called

  1332. Magdalene from

  1333. whom seven

  1334. demons had

  1335. gone out

  1336. and Joanna

  1337. the wife

  1338. of Chusa

  1339. Herod's

  1340. household

  1341. manager

  1342. and Susanna

  1343. and many

  1344. others

  1345. traveled with

  1346. Jesus

  1347. and the

  1348. twelve

  1349. apostles

  1350. and

  1351. provided

  1352. for them

  1353. out of

  1354. their

  1355. means

  1356. end

  1357. quote

  1358. this

  1359. appears

  1360. to have

  1361. been a

  1362. common

  1363. practice

  1364. back in

  1365. the day

  1366. Paul says

  1367. Corinthians

  1368. 9

  1369. verses

  1370. 3-6

  1371. this is

  1372. my

  1373. defense

  1374. to those

  1375. who would

  1376. examine

  1377. me

  1378. do we

  1379. not have

  1380. the right

  1381. to eat

  1382. and drink

  1383. do we

  1384. not have

  1385. the right

  1386. to take

  1387. along

  1388. a believing

  1389. wife

  1390. as do

  1391. the other

  1392. apostles

  1393. and the

  1394. brothers

  1395. of the

  1396. Lord

  1397. and Cephas

  1398. or is

  1399. it only

  1400. Barnabas

  1401. and I

  1402. who have

  1403. no right

  1404. to refrain

  1405. from

  1406. working

  1407. for a

  1408. living

  1409. in the

  1410. context

  1411. of that

  1412. passage

  1413. Paul is

  1414. speaking

  1415. of the

  1416. apostles

  1417. right

  1418. a

  1419. traveling

  1420. missionary

  1421. right

  1422. to have

  1423. his

  1424. needs

  1425. furnished

  1426. by the

  1427. saints

  1428. so that

  1429. he could

  1430. refrain

  1431. from

  1432. working

  1433. for a

  1434. living

  1435. if you

  1436. keep that

  1437. context

  1438. in mind

  1439. it doesn't

  1440. actually make

  1441. sense

  1442. that all

  1443. of a

  1444. sudden

  1445. he inserts

  1446. the

  1447. apostles

  1448. right

  1449. to marry

  1450. and take

  1451. along

  1452. a

  1453. believing

  1454. wife

  1455. the phrase

  1456. believing

  1457. wife

  1458. is

  1459. I believe

  1460. a

  1461. mistranslation

  1462. the

  1463. Greek

  1464. phrase

  1465. is literally

  1466. sister

  1467. woman

  1468. and it

  1469. refers

  1470. to

  1471. women

  1472. who are

  1473. Christian

  1474. sisters

  1475. just as

  1476. the phrase

  1477. brother

  1478. man

  1479. a

  1480. parallel

  1481. phrase

  1482. a

  1483. mirroring

  1484. phrase

  1485. which is

  1486. used

  1487. 14 times

  1488. throughout

  1489. the book

  1490. of Acts

  1491. invariably

  1492. refers to

  1493. men

  1494. who are

  1495. Christian

  1496. brothers

  1497. and not

  1498. to

  1499. believing

  1500. husbands

  1501. the

  1502. Wycliffe

  1503. Bible

  1504. translation

  1505. gets

  1506. this

  1507. right

  1508. and

  1509. fourth

  1510. century

  1511. pastor

  1512. Augustine

  1513. also

  1514. understood

  1515. that

  1516. verse

  1517. this

  1518. way

  1519. so

  1520. then

  1521. Paul

  1522. is

  1523. talking

  1524. about

  1525. an

  1526. apostle's

  1527. right

  1528. to be

  1529. accompanied

  1530. by

  1531. well-to-do

  1532. women

  1533. who provide

  1534. for them

  1535. out of

  1536. their

  1537. means

  1538. just as

  1539. Jesus

  1540. had

  1541. earlier

  1542. in his

  1543. ministry

  1544. earlier

  1545. in their

  1546. ministry

  1547. it seems

  1548. that in

  1549. the early

  1550. church

  1551. women of

  1552. means

  1553. who did

  1554. not

  1555. have

  1556. family

  1557. obligations

  1558. at home

  1559. often

  1560. travel

  1561. alongside

  1562. missionaries

  1563. to help

  1564. them

  1565. to provide

  1566. for them

  1567. to support

  1568. them

  1569. to finance

  1570. their trips

  1571. to take

  1572. care of

  1573. their lodging

  1574. and food

  1575. and likely

  1576. also to help

  1577. them with

  1578. visiting and

  1579. ministering

  1580. to women

  1581. these women

  1582. served in

  1583. the background

  1584. so didn't

  1585. get the

  1586. attention

  1587. and recognition

  1588. that the

  1589. apostles

  1590. received

  1591. but didn't

  1592. Jesus say

  1593. in Matthew

  1594. 20

  1595. whoever

  1596. would be

  1597. great

  1598. among you

  1599. must be

  1600. your servant

  1601. and whoever

  1602. would be

  1603. first among

  1604. you must

  1605. be your

  1606. slave

  1607. even as

  1608. the son

  1609. of man

  1610. came not

  1611. to be

  1612. served

  1613. but to

  1614. serve

  1615. and to

  1616. give his

  1617. life as

  1618. a ransom

  1619. for many

  1620. didn't

  1621. Jesus say

  1622. in Matthew

  1623. 6 that

  1624. those who

  1625. receive

  1626. recognition

  1627. from man

  1628. for their

  1629. good works

  1630. have already

  1631. received

  1632. their reward

  1633. but that

  1634. those who

  1635. go unrewarded

  1636. on earth

  1637. will be

  1638. rewarded

  1639. richly by

  1640. their heavenly

  1641. father in

  1642. heaven who

  1643. sees what

  1644. is done

  1645. in secret

  1646. so rise up

  1647. women of

  1648. God

  1649. women who

  1650. support and

  1651. do many

  1652. good deeds

  1653. for the sake

  1654. of the gospel

  1655. in the background

  1656. content that

  1657. their heavenly

  1658. father who

  1659. sees what

  1660. is done

  1661. in secret

  1662. will reward

  1663. them

  1664. rise up

  1665. women of

  1666. God

  1667. who store

  1668. up treasures

  1669. not on

  1670. earth

  1671. but in

  1672. heaven

  1673. as pastor

  1674. jonathan

  1675. lehman puts

  1676. it

  1677. european art

  1678. galleries are

  1679. filled with

  1680. paintings of

  1681. the great

  1682. men of

  1683. christendom

  1684. but heaven's

  1685. art galleries

  1686. could look a

  1687. little different

  1688. sixth

  1689. God

  1690. calls

  1691. women to

  1692. be mothers

  1693. of the

  1694. church

  1695. please turn

  1696. with me now

  1697. to acts

    Acts 16:1–3

  1698. chapter 16

  1699. verses 1

  1700. to 3

  1701. it says

  1702. paul came

  1703. also to

  1704. derby and

  1705. to lystra

  1706. a disciple

  1707. was there

  1708. named

  1709. timothy

  1710. the son

  1711. of a

  1712. jewish

  1713. woman

  1714. who was

  1715. a believer

  1716. but his

  1717. father was

  1718. a greek

  1719. he was

  1720. well spoken

  1721. of by the

  1722. brothers at

  1723. lystra

  1724. and iconium

  1725. and paul

  1726. wanted timothy

  1727. to accompany

  1728. him and he

  1729. took him and

  1730. circumcised him

  1731. because of the

  1732. jews who were

  1733. in those

  1734. places where

  1735. they all knew

  1736. that his

  1737. father was

  1738. a greek

  1739. timothy

  1740. was paul's

  1741. son in the

  1742. faith he

  1743. accompanied paul

  1744. on many of

  1745. his missionary

  1746. journeys and

  1747. became an

  1748. indispensable and

  1749. trusted minister

  1750. of the gospel

  1751. paul heaps

  1752. high praises

  1753. on timothy

  1754. in philippians

  1755. 2 19

  1756. to 20

  1757. saying i

  1758. hope in

  1759. the lord

  1760. jesus to

  1761. send timothy

  1762. to you

  1763. soon so

  1764. that i

  1765. too may

  1766. be

  1767. cheered

  1768. by news

  1769. of you

  1770. for i

  1771. have

  1772. no one

  1773. like him

  1774. who will

  1775. be genuinely

  1776. concerned for

  1777. your welfare

  1778. that's high

  1779. praise from

  1780. the apostle

  1781. paul

  1782. and who

  1783. raised a

  1784. faithful christian

  1785. man like

  1786. timothy

  1787. one of the

  1788. pillars of the

  1789. early church

  1790. we know that

  1791. his father

  1792. didn't bring

  1793. him up that

  1794. way

  1795. because his

  1796. father was a

  1797. greek

  1798. he was a

  1799. gentile

  1800. an unbeliever

  1801. it was his

  1802. mother

  1803. a jewish

  1804. woman who

  1805. was a

  1806. believer

  1807. in his

  1808. letter to

  1809. timothy

  1810. paul says

  1811. timothy

  1812. chapter 1

  1813. verse 5

  1814. i am

  1815. reminded of

  1816. your sincere

  1817. faith

  1818. a faith

  1819. that dwelt

  1820. first in

  1821. your grandmother

  1822. lois

  1823. and your

  1824. mother

  1825. eunice

  1826. and now

  1827. i am sure

  1828. dwells in

  1829. you as

  1830. well

  1831. there's a

  1832. legacy of

  1833. faith that

  1834. has been

  1835. passed on

  1836. to timothy

  1837. through the

  1838. woman

  1839. in his

  1840. family

  1841. mothering is

  1842. a form of

  1843. discipling

  1844. a most

  1845. intensive

  1846. and immersive

  1847. form of

  1848. it

  1849. in 1

  1850. timothy

  1851. 2

  1852. 11

  1853. 15

  1854. paul writes

  1855. that a

  1856. woman will

  1857. be saved

  1858. through

  1859. childbearing

  1860. if they

  1861. continue in

  1862. faith and

  1863. love and

  1864. holiness with

  1865. self-control

  1866. meaning if

  1867. she gives

  1868. evidence of

  1869. her faith in

  1870. the lord

  1871. jesus christ

  1872. by her

  1873. obedience to

  1874. her god-given

  1875. creational

  1876. mandate

  1877. she will be

  1878. saved

  1879. bible scholar

  1880. stephen

  1881. dempster

  1882. argues that

  1883. one of the

  1884. major themes

  1885. of the old

  1886. testament is

  1887. quote woman

  1888. against the

  1889. beast

  1890. he says

  1891. eve versus

  1892. the serpent

  1893. sarah and

  1894. rebecca versus

  1895. barrenness

  1896. tamar versus

  1897. judah

  1898. jockabed and

  1899. miriam versus

  1900. the pharaoh

  1901. deborah and

  1902. jael versus

  1903. sisera

  1904. ruth and

  1905. naomi versus

  1906. death

  1907. hannah versus

  1908. barrenness

  1909. jehoshabba versus

  1910. ataliah

  1911. and in all these

  1912. examples of

  1913. struggle these

  1914. women of faith

  1915. are engaged in a

  1916. battle to save

  1917. the people of

  1918. god

  1919. the victory

  1920. of esther

  1921. over

  1922. haman

  1923. dramatically

  1924. continues that

  1925. theme

  1926. throughout the

  1927. old testament

  1928. the seed of

  1929. abraham the

  1930. line of

  1931. david from

  1932. which the

  1933. promised

  1934. messiah would

  1935. come is

  1936. beset with

  1937. threats on

  1938. every side

  1939. and is

  1940. always seemingly

  1941. one tenuous

  1942. generation away

  1943. from extinction

  1944. and that

  1945. struggle continues

  1946. into the new

  1947. testament after

  1948. jesus is born

  1949. as mary battles

  1950. herod who

  1951. massacres the

  1952. innocent male

  1953. babies in his

  1954. futile attempt to

  1955. wipe out jesus from

  1956. the planet

  1957. but the promise of

  1958. god prevails and

  1959. jesus the promised

  1960. one of genesis

  1961. 3 15 the seed of

  1962. the woman who

  1963. will crush the

  1964. satan's head the

  1965. serpent's head

  1966. comes survives

  1967. redeems god's

  1968. people by dying

  1969. for them on the

  1970. cross and being

  1971. raised from the

  1972. dead

  1973. mothering is one

  1974. of the most

  1975. selfless things

  1976. that any human

  1977. being can do

  1978. a woman

  1979. sacrifices her

  1980. own body

  1981. dedicates her

  1982. own life

  1983. to carry

  1984. bear

  1985. nurse

  1986. and rear

  1987. someone else

  1988. she gives

  1989. herself for the

  1990. sake of another

  1991. where are the

  1992. loises and

  1993. eunuses of our

  1994. generation

  1995. rise up a woman

  1996. of god

  1997. and give rise

  1998. to and pass on

  1999. the gospel to

  2000. the future

  2001. generations

  2002. there's a call

  2003. here for unmarried

  2004. women as well

  2005. because god

  2006. created marriage

  2007. to be a picture

  2008. of this relationship

  2009. between christ and

  2010. the church

  2011. now that christ

  2012. has come

  2013. the spiritual

  2014. family tree

  2015. is not traced

  2016. by biological

  2017. descent from

  2018. abraham

  2019. but rather it is

  2020. traced by the

  2021. spiritual heritage

  2022. of faith

  2023. as it says in

  2024. romans 9

  2025. it's not jews

  2026. who are saved

  2027. but christians

  2028. who are born

  2029. again of the

  2030. spirit of god

  2031. for that reason

  2032. it's not

  2033. childbearing

  2034. that is ultimate

  2035. but disciple

  2036. making

  2037. that is ultimate

  2038. the creational

  2039. and cultural

  2040. mandate

  2041. continues

  2042. so there is

  2043. still the work

  2044. of procreation

  2045. to do

  2046. however

  2047. now the work

  2048. of new

  2049. creation

  2050. is ultimate

  2051. so what

  2052. jesus

  2053. when jesus

  2054. is told

  2055. that his

  2056. biological

  2057. family

  2058. is looking

  2059. for him

  2060. what does

  2061. he say

  2062. in mark

  2063. chapter 3

  2064. verses 31

  2065. to 36

  2066. who are my

  2067. mother and

  2068. my brothers

  2069. here are my

  2070. mother and

  2071. my brothers

  2072. for whoever

  2073. does the

  2074. will of god

  2075. he is my

  2076. brother and

  2077. sister and

  2078. my mother

  2079. and so paul

  2080. timothy

  2081. chapter 5

  2082. verses 1

  2083. to 2

  2084. commands

  2085. timothy

  2086. to treat

  2087. an older

  2088. man as a

  2089. father

  2090. younger men

  2091. as brothers

  2092. older women

  2093. as mothers

  2094. younger women

  2095. as sisters

  2096. this is why

  2097. singleness

  2098. which was

  2099. viewed as

  2100. abnormal

  2101. and undesirable

  2102. in the old

  2103. testament

  2104. is viewed as

  2105. a special

  2106. gift in the

  2107. new testament

  2108. because then

  2109. you can have

  2110. undivided

  2111. devotion to

  2112. the lord

  2113. you can live

  2114. as a bride

  2115. of christ

  2116. as solely

  2117. a bride

  2118. of christ

  2119. as we

  2120. will be

  2121. in heaven

  2122. this means

  2123. every woman

  2124. married or

  2125. unmarried

  2126. must do

  2127. the work

  2128. of spiritual

  2129. mothering

  2130. by making

  2131. disciples of

  2132. jesus christ

  2133. and discipling

  2134. by its very

  2135. nature entails

  2136. teaching

  2137. this is my

  2138. second point

  2139. when we are

  2140. called

  2141. seventh point

  2142. sorry

  2143. when we are

  2144. called to be

  2145. teachers of the

  2146. word

  2147. god calls

  2148. women

  2149. it says

  2150. in jesus

  2151. because the

  2152. great commission

  2153. applies to us

  2154. all

  2155. matthew 28

  2156. 19 to 20

  2157. go therefore

  2158. and make

  2159. disciples of

  2160. all nations

  2161. baptizing them

  2162. in the name

  2163. of the father

  2164. and of the son

  2165. and of the

  2166. holy spirit

  2167. teaching them

  2168. to observe

  2169. all that i

  2170. have commanded

  2171. you

  2172. to be a

  2173. disciple

  2174. is to be

  2175. a learner

  2176. and to be

  2177. to disciple

  2178. another person

  2179. involves teaching

  2180. that person

  2181. all that jesus

  2182. has commanded

  2183. them

  2184. because of

  2185. the creational

  2186. order in

  2187. which god

  2188. creates adam

  2189. before eve

  2190. and because god

  2191. intends the

  2192. relationship between

  2193. man and woman

  2194. and man and wife

  2195. in particular

  2196. to be to reflect

  2197. the relationship

  2198. within the godhead

  2199. where it says

  2200. in first corinthians

  2201. 11 3

  2202. the head of every

  2203. man is christ

2204. and the head of a

  2205. wife is her husband

  2206. and the head of

  2207. christ is god

  2208. men are to be

  2209. heads of their

  2210. households

  2211. to lead their

  2212. households

  2213. and this

  2214. creational order

  2215. is reflected

  2216. in the church

  2217. as well

  2218. where god

  2219. calls certain

  2220. men

  2221. to be elders

  2222. to serve

  2223. as leaders

  2224. within the

  2225. household of

  2226. god

  2227. this is why

  2228. first timothy

    1 Timothy 2 chapter mention

  2229. chapter 2

  2230. 11 to 12

  2231. says let a

  2232. woman learn

  2233. quietly with

  2234. all submissiveness

  2235. i do not

  2236. permit a woman

  2237. to teach

  2238. or to exercise

  2239. authority over

  2240. a man

  2241. rather she

  2242. is to remain

  2243. quiet

  2244. this is to

  2245. preserve god's

  2246. good design

  2247. in creation

  2248. which in turn

  2249. reveals

  2250. who god

  2251. is

  2252. his character

  2253. but this

  2254. does not mean

  2255. that woman

  2256. may never

  2257. teach

  2258. the prohibition

  2259. is specifically

  2260. about teaching

  2261. or exercising

  2262. authority

  2263. over a man

  2264. because of the

  2265. creation order

  2266. i mentioned

  2267. earlier

  2268. so then

  2269. women may

  2270. freely use

  2271. their teaching

  2272. gifts to

  2273. teach other

  2274. women

  2275. as well as

  2276. children

  2277. titus chapter

    Titus 2 chapter mention

  2278. 2 in fact

  2279. commands it

  2280. when he says

  2281. in verses 3

  2282. to 5

  2283. older women

  2284. likewise are

  2285. to be reverent

  2286. in behavior

  2287. not slanderers

  2288. or a slave

  2289. to much wine

  2290. they are to

  2291. teach what

  2292. is good

  2293. and so

  2294. train the

  2295. young woman

  2296. to love

  2297. their husbands

  2298. and children

  2299. to be

  2300. self-controlled

  2301. pure

  2302. working at

  2303. home

  2304. kind and

  2305. submissive

  2306. to their

  2307. own husbands

  2308. that the

  2309. word of

  2310. god may

  2311. not be

  2312. reviled

  2313. women ought

  2314. to use

  2315. their teaching

  2316. gifts to

  2317. train up

  2318. and disciple

  2319. other women

  2320. moreover

  2321. first

  2322. timothy

  2323. 2

  2324. 12

  2325. doesn't

  2326. mean

  2327. that

  2328. women

  2329. may

  2330. not

  2331. teach

  2332. in any

  2333. sense

  2334. of the

  2335. word

  2336. men

  2337. in any

  2338. context

  2339. there is

  2340. a general

  2341. exhortation

  2342. to both

  2343. men and

  2344. women

  2345. given in

  2346. colossians

  2347. 3

  2348. 16

  2349. that the

  2350. word of

  2351. christ

  2352. dwell in

  2353. you

  2354. richly

  2355. teaching

  2356. and

  2357. admonishing

  2358. one another

  2359. in all

  2360. wisdom

  2361. so then

  2362. there is

  2363. a general

  2364. exhorting

  2365. and teaching

  2366. that we

  2367. all ought

  2368. to do

  2369. men and

  2370. women

  2371. to one

  2372. another

  2373. when a

  2374. woman makes

  2375. an insightful

  2376. comment about

  2377. a passage of

  2378. scripture in

  2379. community group

  2380. and people

  2381. including men

  2382. learn from

  2383. that she's

  2384. doing some

  2385. teaching but

  2386. that's not the

  2387. kind of teaching

  2388. in view in

  2389. first timothy

    1 Timothy 2:12

  2390. 2

  2391. verse 12

  2392. what paul is

  2393. prohibiting is

  2394. formal public

  2395. teaching in the

  2396. corporate gathering

  2397. of the church

  2398. because that

  2399. undermines the

  2400. creation order

  2401. between man and

  2402. a woman

  2403. please turn with

  2404. me to

  2405. acts chapter

    Acts 18 chapter mention

  2406. 18

  2407. that's the

  2408. final passage

  2409. i'm going to

  2410. turn your

  2411. attention to

  2412. chapter 18

  2413. we're introduced

  2414. here to

  2415. priscilla and

  2416. aquila

  2417. jews who had

  2418. converted to

  2419. christianity even

  2420. before paul

  2421. priscilla is

  2422. sometimes referred

  2423. to as

  2424. prisca for

  2425. short

  2426. throughout the

  2427. new

  2428. testament

  2429. and this

  2430. husband and

  2431. wife duo

  2432. accompanied paul

  2433. on his

  2434. missionary journeys

  2435. they were also

  2436. traveling

  2437. missionaries

  2438. and they

  2439. became

  2440. indispensable

  2441. fellow workers

  2442. of paul

  2443. in romans

    Romans 16:3–4

  2444. chapter 16

  2445. verses 3

  2446. to 4

  2447. paul says

  2448. that these

  2449. two risk

  2450. their necks

  2451. for his

  2452. life

  2453. and that for

  2454. that reason

  2455. not only he

  2456. but all the

  2457. churches of the

  2458. gentiles give

  2459. thanks to

  2460. priscilla and

  2461. aquila

  2462. and acts

  2463. 18 to 20

  2464. verses 24

  2465. to 28 tell us

  2466. an interesting

  2467. story about

  2468. this couple

  2469. it says

  2470. now a jew

  2471. named apollos

  2472. a native of

  2473. alexandria

  2474. came to

  2475. ephesus

  2476. he was an

  2477. eloquent man

  2478. competent in

  2479. the scriptures

  2480. he had been

  2481. instructed in

  2482. the way of

  2483. the lord

  2484. and being

  2485. fervent in

  2486. spirit he

  2487. spoke and

  2488. taught accurately

  2489. the things

  2490. concerning

  2491. jesus

  2492. though he

  2493. knew only

  2494. the baptism

  2495. of john

  2496. he began to

  2497. speak boldly

  2498. in the

  2499. synagogue

  2500. but when

  2501. priscilla and

  2502. aquila heard

  2503. him

  2504. they took

  2505. him aside

  2506. and explained

  2507. to him

  2508. the way of

  2509. god

  2510. more

  2511. accurately

  2512. this is

  2513. a fascinating

  2514. passage

  2515. that we'll

  2516. explain further

  2517. when we

  2518. actually get

  2519. to it

  2520. in the

  2521. book of

  2522. acts

  2523. but for

  2524. now

  2525. it suffices

  2526. to say

  2527. that apollos

  2528. had an

  2529. accurate

  2530. but still

  2531. deficient

  2532. understanding

  2533. of jesus

  2534. he said

  2535. that he

  2536. only knew

  2537. the baptism

  2538. of john

  2539. which

  2540. no one

  2541. knows

  2542. exactly

  2543. what that

  2544. means

  2545. in this

  2546. specific

  2547. context

  2548. but most

  2549. likely

  2550. it means

  2551. that he

  2552. wasn't

  2553. aware

  2554. of the

  2555. spirit

  2556. baptism

  2557. that had

  2558. come upon

  2559. the jews

  2560. at pentecost

  2561. and upon

  2562. the samaritans

  2563. in the city

  2564. of samaria

  2565. in acts

    Acts 8 chapter mention

  2566. chapter 8

  2567. so when

  2568. priscilla and

  2569. aquila heard

  2570. him

  2571. they took

  2572. him aside

  2573. and explained

  2574. to him

  2575. the way

  2576. of god

  2577. more

  2578. accurately

  2579. here we

  2580. see a

  2581. woman

  2582. priscilla

  2583. in partnership

  2584. with her

  2585. husband

  2586. aquila

  2587. teaching

  2588. a man

  2589. and not

  2590. just a man

  2591. but a

  2592. prominent

  2593. teacher

  2594. in the

  2595. church

  2596. but note

  2597. well the

  2598. way they

  2599. do it

  2600. they take

  2601. him aside

  2602. in order

  2603. to teach

  2604. him

  2605. meaning

  2606. they talk

  2607. to him

  2608. privately

  2609. not

  2610. publicly

  2611. priscilla

  2612. and aquila

  2613. do not

  2614. grandstand

  2615. in the

  2616. public

  2617. gathering

  2618. of the

  2619. church

  2620. to teach

  2621. apollos

  2622. and increase

  2623. their standing

  2624. in the

  2625. church

  2626. by correcting

  2627. him

  2628. no

  2629. they do

  2630. it

  2631. discreetly

  2632. privately

  2633. in the

  2634. informal

  2635. context

  2636. of the

  2637. home

  2638. rather

  2639. than in

  2640. the

  2641. context

  2642. of the

  2643. gathered

  2644. church

  2645. so

  2646. rise up

  2647. woman

  2648. woman

  2649. of god

  2650. who

  2651. know

  2652. rightly

  2653. to handle

  2654. the word

  2655. of god

  2656. who can

  2657. teach

  2658. others

  2659. to proclaim

  2660. it

  2661. more

  2662. accurately

  2663. all of

  2664. that to

  2665. say

  2666. there are

  2667. rich

  2668. and varied

  2669. responsibilities

  2670. to which

  2671. christian

  2672. women are

  2673. called

  2674. to

  2675. and carrying

  2676. out these

  2677. responsibilities

  2678. is a

  2679. challenge

  2680. even to

  2681. the most

  2682. gifted

  2683. and prolific

  2684. of women

  2685. the women

  2686. are commanded

  2687. not to teach

  2688. or exercise

  2689. authority

  2690. over men

  2691. in the

  2692. formal public

  2693. context

  2694. of the

  2695. gathered

  2696. church

  2697. it is

  2698. simply

  2699. not

  2700. true

  2701. that

  2702. women

  2703. are

  2704. therefore

  2705. unfulfilled

  2706. without

  2707. doing

  2708. those

  2709. things

  2710. that

  2711. is

  2712. an

  2713. unbiblical

  2714. assertion

  2715. if

  2716. you

  2717. see

  2718. god's

  2719. law

  2720. as

  2721. a

  2722. straitjacket

  2723. intended

  2724. to

  2725. restrain

  2726. you

  2727. you're

  2728. going

  2729. to

  2730. want

  2731. to

  2732. wear

  2733. it

  2734. as

  2735. loosely

  2736. as

  2737. possible

  2738. to

  2739. sneak

  2740. out

  2741. of

  2742. it

  2743. as

  2744. much

  2745. as

  2746. possible

  2747. to

  2748. push

  2749. the

  2750. boundaries

  2751. as

  2752. far

  2753. as

  2754. you

  2755. possibly

  2756. can

  2757. but

  2758. if

  2759. you

  2760. see

  2761. god's

  2762. law

  2763. as

  2764. a

  2765. life

  2766. jacket

  2767. intended

  2768. to

  2769. save

  2770. you

  2771. you're

  2772. going

  2773. to

  2774. want

  2775. to

  2776. fit

  2777. snugly

  2778. into

  2779. that

  2780. make

  2781. sure

  2782. that

  2783. it's

  2784. strapped

  2785. on

  2786. properly

  2787. because

  2788. you

  2789. see

  2790. it

  2791. as

  2792. a

  2793. conduit

  2794. of

  2795. blessing

  2796. we

  2797. need

  2798. to

  2799. make

  2800. sure

  2801. that

  2802. our

  2803. perspective

  2804. is

  2805. aligned

  2806. with

  2881. we

  2882. see

  2883. the

  2885. of

  2886. the

  2888. of

  2926. at

  2927. the

  2929. we

  2934. of

  2935. god

  2936. submitting

  2937. to

  2960. people

  2961. of

  2962. this

  2967. jesus

  2968. who

  2969. died

  2970. in

  2971. his

  2973. at

  2974. the

  2983. what

  2984. tragedy

  2985. think

  2986. of

  2988. that

  2989. jesus

  2990. could

  2993. if

  2994. he

  3001. he

  3010. he

  3023. to

  3024. heal

  3025. and

  3026. to

  3027. live

  3028. and

  3029. to

  3030. preach

  3031. for

  3032. another

  3033. 40

  3034. years

  3035. but

  3036. they

  3037. don't

  3038. understand

  3039. that

  3040. only

  3041. the

  3043. of

  3044. man

  3045. can

  3046. bear

  3047. the

  3048. sins

  3049. of

  3050. men

  3051. and

  3052. women

  3053. they

  3054. don't

  3056. that

  3057. only

  3058. jesus

  3059. death

  3060. can

  3061. bring

  3062. atonement

  3063. for

  3064. sins

  3065. they

  3066. would

  3067. have

  3068. never

  3069. foreseen

  3070. that

  3071. jesus

  3072. humiliation

  3073. and

  3074. death

  3075. would

  3076. lead

  3077. to

  3078. his

  3080. and

  3081. eternal

  3082. glory

  3085. hand

  3086. of

  3087. the

  3094. us

  3095. every

  3096. cross

  3097. we

  3098. bear

  3099. for

  3100. the

  3101. sake

  3102. of

  3103. jesus

  3104. christ

  3105. is

  3106. a

  3107. prelude

  3108. to

  3109. resurrection

  3110. every

  3111. death

  3112. we

  3113. die

  3114. to

  3115. ourselves

  3116. to

  3117. our

  3118. selfish

  3119. pride

  3120. is

  3121. a

  3123. to

  3124. growth

  3125. and

  3126. new

  3127. life

  3128. so

  3129. let

  3130. us

  3131. gladly

  3132. submit

  3133. to

  3134. our

  3135. lord

  3136. and

  3137. savior

  3138. in

  3139. every

  3141. trusting

  3142. that

  3143. the

  3145. who

  3146. gave

  3147. his

  3157. from

  3158. us

  3159. to
