  1. Let me pray for the reading and preaching of God's Word.

  2. Dear Father,

  3. we thank you for calling us into your family,

  4. rescuing us from sin and death,

  5. giving us eternal life,

  6. this joyful fellowship we share with you

  7. and with one another, your people.

  8. We humble ourselves once again before your Word.

  9. We have come to worship you.

  10. We pray for you.

  11. To pledge our allegiance once again to you

  12. and to your Son, our Lord Jesus Christ.

  13. We want to hear from you

  14. in the reading and preaching of God's Word

  15. that we might know how,

  16. as one church,

  17. we might build up one another.

  18. We pray for conviction

  19. that you lay on each and every member's heart

  20. a specific way you are calling him or her

  21. to build up this body

  22. and use their gifts.

  23. And we pray that you'd impress deeply upon us

  24. our sense of dependence on you

  25. and our interdependence

  26. with each other

  27. as members of the body of Christ.

  28. Speak to us.

  29. We are listening to you.

  30. In Jesus' name we pray.

  31. Amen.

  32. Acts chapter 11, verses 19 to 30.

    Acts 11:19–30

  33. Now those who were scattered

  34. because of the persecution

  35. that arose over Stephen

  36. traveled as far as

  37. Phoenicia and Cyprus and Antioch,

  38. speaking the word to no one except Jews.

  39. But there were some of them,

  40. men of Cyprus and Cyrene,

  41. who on coming to Antioch

  42. spoke to the Hellenists also,

  43. preaching the Lord Jesus.

  44. And the hand of the Lord was with them,

  45. and a great number who believed

  46. turned to the Lord.

  47. The report of this came to the ears

  48. of the church in Jerusalem,

  49. and they sent Barnabas to Antioch.

  50. When he came and saw the grace of God,

  51. he was glad,

  52. and he exhorted them all

  53. to remain faithful to the Lord

  54. with steadfast purpose.

  55. For he was a good man,

  56. full of the Holy Spirit and of faith.

  57. And a great many people

  58. were added to the Lord.

  59. So Barnabas went to Tarsus

  60. to look for Saul,

  61. and when he had found him,

  62. he brought him to Antioch.

  63. For a whole year,

  64. they met with the church

  65. and taught a great many people.

  66. And in Antioch,

  67. the disciples were first called Christians.

  68. Now in these days,

  69. prophets came down

  70. from Jerusalem to Antioch,

  71. and one of them named Agabus

  72. stood up and foretold by the Spirit

  73. that there would be a great famine

  74. over all the world.

  75. This took place in the days of Claudius.

  76. So the disciples determined

  77. everyone according to his ability

  78. to send relief

  79. to the brothers living in Judea.

  80. And they did so,

  81. sending it to the elders

  82. by the hand of Barnabas and Saul.

  83. This is God's holy

  84. and authoritative word.

  85. When I was a student

  86. at the Sovereign Grace Pastors College,

  87. there was a class on church planting,

  88. and we were learning about

  89. how best,

  90. some of the best practices

  91. for planting a church,

  92. starting a new church

  93. in an area where there's no church.

  94. And we had several instructors,

  95. and one of them was someone

  96. who leads a denomination

  97. and that has been,

  98. by all appearances,

  99. very successful in planting churches.

  100. And he said something

  101. that was surprising

  102. and has stuck with me.

  103. He said,

  104. quote,

  105. it's easy to plant a church service,

  106. but it's hard to plant a church.

  107. What he meant by that was this,

  108. that it's easy to find

  109. a gifted speaker

  110. or someone with a charismatic personality,

  111. team them up with a team

  112. of gifted musicians

  113. and graphic artists,

  114. and put together

  115. an impressive service.

  116. And when you do that,

  117. when you have an attractive product,

  118. an appealing product,

  119. it's not hard to get consumers.

  120. People come.

  121. It's not hard to get a crowd.

  122. But if you want more than consumers,

  123. if you want a congregation

  124. of people who have deep relationships

  125. with one another,

  126. if you want people who love

  127. and serve one another,

  128. in other words,

  129. if you want to plant a church,

  130. not just a church service,

  131. that takes the hand of God.

  132. That's why it says in verse 21

  133. that the hand of the Lord

  134. was with them.

  135. That's why it says

  136. in chapter 11, verse 23,

  137. that the grace of God

  138. was evident among the Christians

  139. there in Antioch.

  140. It takes,

  141. on top of that,

  142. all the various members

  143. of the body of Christ

  144. pitching in

  145. and using their gifts

  146. to build up the church.

  147. That's what the church

  148. is meant to be.

  149. And that's what we see here

  150. in Acts 11,

    Acts 11:19–30

  151. verses 19 to 30.

  152. Some of you might have wondered

  153. at times,

  154. you know,

  155. what can I possibly do

  156. to serve Christ and His church?

  157. There are so many other gifted people,

  158. so many other mature people.

  159. What can I possibly do

  160. for this church?

  161. Well, if you are a member

  162. of this body of Christ,

  163. then you do have a role to play.

  164. God has given you,

  165. in particular,

  166. gifts that this specific body needs.

  167. In this passage,

  168. we see believers

  169. serving in many different ways.

  170. We see evangelists speak.

  171. We see apostles established.

  172. We see shepherds exhort.

  173. We see teachers teach.

  174. We see prophets prophesy.

  175. And we see disciples give.

  176. And the main point

  177. of all of this is

  178. that Luke is trying

  179. to convey to us

  180. is that the church grows

  181. as its interdependent members

  182. partner and serve together

  183. in the grace of God.

  184. The church grows

  185. as its interdependent members

  186. partner and serve together

  187. in the grace of God.

  188. First, we see the evangelists

  189. speak in verses 19 to 21.

  190. We already saw in chapter 8

  191. how believers were scattered

  192. by the persecution

  193. that broke out against the church

  194. after martyrdom of Stephen

  195. had the effect of actually

  196. spreading the gospel abroad,

  197. pushing the believers

  198. out of Jerusalem and Judea

  199. to Samaria,

  200. where the Samaritans,

  201. kind of a half-Jews,

  202. were living.

  203. The great scattering

  204. of the church by persecution

  205. led to the great spread

  206. of the gospel

  207. by those very same believers.

  208. And we see the same phenomenon

  209. happening here

  210. in verses 19 to 20.

  211. It says,

  212. Now those who were scattered

  213. because of the persecution

  214. that arose over Stephen

  215. traveled as far as

  216. Phoenicia and Cyprus

  217. and Antioch,

  218. speaking the word

  219. to no one except Jews.

  220. But there were some of them,

  221. men of Cyprus and Cyrene,

  222. who on coming to Antioch

  223. spoke to the Hellenists also,

  224. preaching the Lord Jesus.

  225. The word Hellenists

  226. is the same word

  227. that we saw in chapter 6

  228. where the Hellenized

  229. Gratian Jews

  230. were in conflict with

  231. and had a complaint

  232. against the Jews,

  233. the Hebraic Jews,

  234. about the distribution

  235. of food to the widows.

  236. And in that case,

  237. in that context,

  238. the Hellenists

  239. referred not to Gentiles,

  240. for which we have

  241. a separate word,

  242. but to Jewish believers

  243. who had been Hellenized,

  244. Greek-speaking Jews,

  245. Jews who were culturally

  246. Greek,

  247. Hellenist.

  248. We know that

  249. that was the case there

  250. because the Hellenist Jews

  251. are not contrasted

  252. with the Greeks

  253. and the Gentiles,

  254. but they are instead

  255. contrasted with

  256. Hebraic Jews.

  257. So it's Hellenized Jews

  258. versus Hebraic Jews.

  259. But here in chapter 11,

  260. the Hellenists

  261. are not contrasted

  262. with other

  263. Hebraic Jews,

  264. other Jews,

  265. but he's contrasted

  266. in general with Jews.

  267. It's the Hellenists

  268. versus the Jews,

  269. not the Hebrews

  270. versus the Grecian Jews.

  271. So this here

  272. is an ethnic division.

  273. It's referring to

  274. the actual Greeks,

  275. the Gentiles.

  276. So some of the believers

  277. who had been scattered

  278. by the persecution

  279. that broke out

  280. against the church

  281. went about spreading

  282. the gospel

  283. to no one except Jews.

  284. That was what

  285. most of them were doing.

  286. However,

  287. some of them

  288. who on coming to Antioch

  289. spoke not only

  290. to fellow Jews,

  291. not only to Hellenist Jews,

  292. but also to the Greeks,

  293. the Gentiles.

  294. The Gentile mission

  295. of the church

  296. didn't begin in earnest

  297. until chapter 10

  298. when Peter preached

  299. the gospel to Cornelius.

  300. And so then

  301. these believers

  302. who were preaching

  303. Jesus among the Greeks,

  304. they were doing so

  305. after that

  306. has already happened.

  307. So then,

  308. not only did the persecution

  309. led by Saul

  310. lead to the gospel

  311. spreading to Samaritans,

  312. it's now going

  313. to the end of the earth,

  314. to among the Gentiles also.

  315. And this is a wonderful reminder

  316. of God's sovereignty

  317. to all of us.

  318. And it's a great comfort

  319. to me personally

  320. because when there are

  321. setbacks and disappointments

  322. in ministry,

  323. just like the persecuted church

  324. in Jerusalem experienced,

  325. we need not

  326. to hang our heads

  327. in despair

  328. because of God's

  329. sovereign work

  330. in and through

  331. all of that.

  332. What we might see

  333. as regression,

  334. as a disappointment,

  335. we must remember

  336. that God might not

  337. see that way

  338. because we don't see

  339. personally all that

  340. God himself is doing.

  341. We have seen

  342. similar patterns

  343. throughout church history.

  344. One notable one

  345. is when Constantinople

  346. fell to the Muslim Turks

  347. in 1453.

  348. It looked like

  349. the end of Christendom.

  350. The Byzantine Empire,

  351. Constantinople,

  352. was the heart,

  353. the capital

  354. of the Byzantine Empire

  355. which was the cultural

  356. and political center

  357. of Christendom.

  358. And however,

  359. what happened

  360. with that

  361. was the church

  362. which was back then

  363. an empty shell

  364. in a lot of ways

  365. was exposed

  366. and the conquest,

  367. the Islamic conquest

  368. of Constantinople

  369. pushed a lot

  370. of the Eastern

  371. Greek-speaking

  372. biblical scholars

  373. to the West,

  374. to the Latin-speaking West.

  375. And when that happened

  376. they brought their

  377. original Greek manuscripts

  378. of the New Testament

  379. with them.

  380. And at the time

  381. there was

  382. kind of a

  383. scholarly revival

  384. happening

  385. called Back to the Sources.

  386. They were trying

  387. to go back

  388. to the sources

  389. of the teachings

  390. and the things

  391. that they were learning

  392. and the Christians

  393. likewise

  394. were trying to go

  395. back to the sources.

  396. Let's go back

  397. to the scriptures,

  398. to the original scriptures

  399. and see

  400. what is taught.

  401. See what we're

  402. supposed to believe.

  403. See how we're

  404. supposed to live.

  405. And because

  406. of this new influx

  407. of the original manuscripts

  408. of the Greek New Testament

  409. people were seeing

  410. things that they were

  411. never taught before.

  412. They were seeing

  413. things again

  414. recovering these doctrines

  415. that were lost.

  416. And that led

  417. to the Renaissance

  418. and more particularly

  419. to the Protestant Reformation

  420. which led to

  421. an unprecedented

  422. period of

  423. restoration

  424. restoration

  425. and recovery

  426. and renewal

  427. in the church

  428. and sparked

  429. some much needed reforms.

  430. Similarly,

  431. when our hard work

  432. appears to come

  433. to nothing,

  434. we have to remember

  435. that God is still

  436. sovereignly at work.

  437. Maybe some of you

  438. have been sharing

  439. the gospel

  440. with an unbelieving

  441. friend of yours.

  442. She seemed

  443. really open to it

  444. until they suddenly

  445. turned

  446. and seemed to have

  447. closed the door

  448. on the gospel.

  449. Maybe

  450. some of you

  451. have experienced

  452. setbacks within

  453. your respective

  454. ministries that you

  455. serve in the church.

  456. You thought the team

  457. was growing and thriving

  458. but then

  459. you lost some people,

  460. there were some

  461. disagreements on how

  462. to go about things

  463. and now you feel like

  464. there's been a setback.

  465. Maybe you were discipling

  466. or personally ministering

  467. to someone,

  468. to another believer

  469. in the church

  470. and you thought you

  471. had taken two steps

  472. forward

  473. but now you feel like

  474. you've taken three steps

  475. backward.

  476. Whatever the case

  477. might be,

  478. don't be discouraged.

  479. Remember that God

  480. is at work in ways

  481. that you do not see.

  482. We can keep

  483. on plowing,

  484. keep on sowing,

  485. keep on praying,

  486. keep on speaking

  487. the word

  488. knowing that God

  489. is at work in ways

  490. we can't discern.

  491. Note also the emphasis

  492. on speaking the word

  493. in verses 19 to 20.

  494. Some of the scattered

  495. believers traveled

  496. as far as Phoenicia

  497. and Cyprus

  498. and Antioch

  499. speaking the word

  500. to no one except Jews.

  501. But there were some

  502. of the men of Cyprus

  503. and Cyrene

  504. who on coming to Antioch

  505. spoke to the Hellenists

  506. also preaching

  507. the Lord Jesus.

  508. Gospel ministry

  509. involves speaking.

  510. If you want to see

  511. your family,

  512. friends,

  513. and neighbors

  514. saved by Jesus,

  515. you must speak

  516. the word of Jesus.

  517. There's a famous saying

  518. that is often attributed

  519. to Francis of Assisi

  520. goes something like this,

  521. preach the gospel

  522. at all times,

  523. when necessary,

  524. use words.

  525. It's an appealing sentiment

  526. because we all

  527. squirm a little bit

  528. at the thought

  529. of having to break out

  530. of our comfort zones

  531. to share the gospel

  532. and actually speak it

  533. to somebody.

  534. The reality is

  535. Francis of Assisi

  536. never said such a thing.

  537. The quote is actually

  538. a misleading paraphrase

  539. of what Francis

  540. actually said.

  541. And this is the actual quote,

  542. No brother should preach

  543. contrary to the form

  544. and regulation

  545. of the Holy Church,

  546. nor unless he has been

  547. permitted by his minister.

  548. The minister should take care

  549. not to grant this permission

  550. to anyone indiscriminately.

  551. All the friars,

  552. however,

  553. should preach

  554. by their deeds.

  555. Far from saying

  556. that the preaching

  557. the gospel with words

  558. is usually unnecessary,

  559. he was so concerned

  560. with ensuring

  561. that the preaching

  562. of the gospel

  563. is done faithfully,

  564. he was trying

  565. to stop friars

  566. who were doing it poorly

  567. while still encouraging

  568. them to live

  569. in a manner

  570. worthy of the gospel

  571. until they can be

  572. properly trained

  573. and authorized

  574. to do so.

  575. He believed

  576. that preaching the gospel

  577. with words

  578. was of utmost importance.

  579. If news can be spread

  580. without words,

  581. there would be no need

  582. for newspapers

  583. and news anchors.

  584. The good news

  585. that Jesus

  586. is the messianic king

  587. sent by God

  588. to save us,

  589. that he died on the cross

  590. for our sins

  591. and was raised

  592. from the dead

  593. for our justification,

  594. that if we repent

  595. of our sins

  596. and believe in Jesus,

  597. we can be saved,

  598. that we can receive

  599. the Holy Spirit

  600. and have eternal life.

  601. This good news

  602. cannot be conveyed

  603. by deeds alone.

  604. The good news

  605. of Jesus Christ

  606. must be spoken.

  607. And the people

  608. we must speak

  609. the word of Christ

  610. to are all the nations,

  611. all peoples.

  612. Though some of the

  613. Jewish Christians

  614. spoke the word

  615. to no one except Jews,

  616. others of them

  617. spoke to the Hellenists

  618. also.

  619. They crossed ethnic lines

  620. and preached the gospel

  621. to the Greeks,

  622. the Gentiles also.

  623. And this latter group

  624. of Christians

  625. who spoke to the Hellenists

  626. are commended

  627. in verse 21.

  628. It says,

  629. And the hand of the Lord

  630. was with them,

  631. and a great number

  632. of who believed

  633. turned to the Lord.

  634. God blessed their ministry

  635. so that a great number

  636. of Greeks believed

  637. and turned to the Lord.

  638. For decades now,

  639. what missiologists call,

  640. scholars of missions theology,

  641. called the homogeneous unit principle,

  642. has dominated Christian thinking

  643. about missions

  644. for decades.

  645. A proponent of that principle

  646. famously encapsulated

  647. the principle

  648. when he said,

  649. quote,

  650. men like to become Christians

  651. without crossing racial,

  652. linguistic,

  653. or class barriers.

  654. For this reason,

  655. he argued that Christians

  656. should evangelize

  657. within existing cultural lines

  658. and social networks

  659. because that's when

  660. the church grows the fastest.

  661. However,

  662. there's a big difference

  663. between saying that

  664. this is the way

  665. things often are

  666. and saying that

  667. that is the way

  668. things should be.

  669. The fact that

  670. that's the easiest

  671. and fastest way

  672. to do things

  673. or to grow a church

  674. does not mean

  675. that that is the best

  676. way to do things.

  677. When applied,

  678. the homogeneous unit principle

  679. has meant

  680. evangelizing along

  681. racial lines

  682. in America,

  683. along tribal lines

  684. in Africa,

  685. along economic lines

  686. in South America

  687. and along caste lines

  688. in India,

  689. and so on.

  690. In contrast,

  691. however,

  692. throughout the book

  693. of Acts,

  694. we see believers

  695. proclaiming the gospel

  696. to all people,

  697. Jews and Gentiles,

  698. men and women,

  699. slave and free,

  700. rich and poor,

  701. without partiality,

  702. without distinction.

  703. In fact,

  704. the very breaking down

  705. of the dividing wall

  706. of hostility

  707. between Jews and Gentiles

  708. that Paul speaks of

  709. in Ephesians chapter 2

    Ephesians 2 chapter mention

  710. is a distinguishing mark

  711. of the church.

  712. This is why

  713. theologian Edmund Clowney

  714. has gone so far

  715. as to say

  716. that the point

  717. at which human barriers

  718. are surmounted

  719. is the point

  720. at which a believer

  721. is joined to Christ

  722. and his people.

  723. Here in verses 19 to 20,

  724. we see that

  725. while the scattered

  726. Jewish Christians

  727. spoke the word

  728. to no one except Jews,

  729. some of them

  730. spoke to the Hellenists

  731. also.

  732. Unless someone

  733. crosses racial

  734. and ethnic

  735. and cultural

  736. and socioeconomic

  737. boundaries

  738. to speak the word

  739. of Christ,

  740. the gospel will never

  741. reach all the nations.

  742. And that's

  743. our explicit commission

  744. from our Lord.

  745. Make disciples

  746. of all nations.

  747. Be witnesses

  748. of Jesus Christ

  749. not only in Jerusalem

  750. to the Jews

  751. but also to

  752. all Judea and Samaria

  753. among the Samaritans

  754. and also to the end

  755. of the earth

  756. among the Gentiles.

  757. We are called

  758. to bear witness

  759. not only to people

  760. who are of our own

  761. culture only,

  762. of our own language

  763. only,

  764. of our own race

  765. only,

  766. of our own

  767. socioeconomic class

  768. only,

  769. but to all

  770. peoples.

  771. Evangelists

  772. speak the gospel

  773. to all.

  774. And note that

  775. these evangelists

  776. are everyday Christians.

  777. They were not

  778. one of the twelve

  779. commissioned in Acts 1.

  780. They were not

  781. even one of the seven

  782. commissioned in Acts 6.

  783. In fact,

  784. these evangelists

  785. are not even named.

  786. We don't even know

  787. who they were.

  788. But nonetheless,

  789. they spoke

  790. the gospel

  791. to these Greeks

  792. and the hand

  793. of the Lord

  794. was with them

  795. and a great number

  796. who believed

  797. turned to the Lord.

  798. There are evangelists

  799. among us

  800. in our church

  801. as well.

  802. I know that

  803. some of you

  804. are doing

  805. one-on-one

  806. Bible studies

  807. or book readings

  808. with other friends

  809. who are unbelievers,

  810. sharing the gospel

  811. with them

  812. in that context.

  813. I know that

  814. some of you

  815. are considering

  816. going into

  817. cross-cultural missions

  818. as witnesses

  819. for Jesus Christ.

  820. May you do so

  821. more and more.

  822. May God raise up

  823. more evangelists

  824. from our midst

  825. and let us

  826. remember that

  827. evangelism is not

  828. something that's

  829. received for only

  830. gifted evangelists

  831. but something

  832. that every Christian

  833. is called to do.

  834. And it says

  835. in verse 22

  836. that when,

  837. the report of this

  838. came to the years

  839. of the church

  840. in Jerusalem,

  841. they sent Barnabas

  842. to Antioch.

  843. That's my second point.

  844. The apostles

  845. established.

  846. It seems that

  847. the twelve apostles

  848. based in Jerusalem

  849. were responsible

  850. for authorizing

  851. and incorporating

  852. new congregations

  853. to the larger church.

  854. So in the same way

  855. that they sent

  856. Peter and John

  857. as delegates

  858. to Samaria

  859. in Acts 8,

  860. 14 to 17,

  861. this time

  862. they delegate

  863. the task

  864. to Barnabas

  865. who travels

  866. to Antioch.

  867. And then as we see

  868. in the following verses,

  869. Antioch in turn

  870. recruits Saul

  871. for his ministry

  872. in Antioch

  873. and it says

  874. in verse 26

  875. that for a whole year

  876. they met with the church

  877. and taught

  878. a great many people.

  879. In our context,

  880. modern day,

  881. this looks a lot

  882. like the extra-local

  883. denominational leaders

  884. who play this kind

  885. of role sometimes

  886. for churches.

  887. For example,

  888. our regional

  889. denominational leaders

  890. ensure that the pastors

  891. that we are ordaining

  892. as a local church

  893. uphold the Sovereign Grace Church's

  894. statement of faith.

  895. And they help us

  896. by administering

  897. some of the ordination exams.

  898. When we plant

  899. the new church

  900. in partnership

  901. with our denomination,

  902. Sovereign Grace Churches,

  903. they offer not only

  904. financial assistance,

  905. they also help

  906. in assessing

  907. and training leaders.

  908. Sometimes they send

  909. members of their church

  910. to be a part

  911. of our church plants.

  912. This kind of partnership

  913. that extends

  914. beyond the local church

  915. provides accountability

  916. and protection

  917. for local churches.

  918. We just had the privilege

  919. of having

  920. a leader in our denomination,

  921. a pastor from

  922. a sister church

  923. in this past weekend,

  924. Andy Farmer,

  925. to equip us

  926. and encourage us

  927. this past weekend.

  928. And as a pastor,

  929. I personally derive

  930. a lot of encouragement

  931. through these kinds

  932. of inter-church relationships.

  933. So in this way,

  934. evangelists speak the word

  935. and apostles establish

  936. the church.

  937. Third,

  938. shepherds exhort.

  939. Look at verses 22 to 24

  940. with me.

  941. It says that

  942. when the report of this

  943. came to the ears

  944. of the church in Jerusalem,

  945. they sent Barnabas

  946. to Antioch.

  947. When he came

  948. and saw the grace of God,

  949. he was glad

  950. and he exhorted them all

  951. to remain faithful

  952. to the Lord

  953. with steadfast purpose.

  954. For he was a good man,

  955. full of the Holy Spirit

  956. and of faith.

  957. And a great many people

  958. were added to the Lord.

  959. Barnabas was the perfect choice

  960. really for sending to Antioch

  961. for several reasons.

  962. First,

  963. we know from Acts 4.36

  964. that Barnabas

  965. was a native

  966. of Cyprus himself.

  967. Since the Jewish believers

  968. who preached Jesus

  969. to the Greeks

  970. in Antioch

  971. were men of Cyprus

  972. and Cyrene,

  973. it is possible

  974. that Barnabas

  975. already knew

  976. some of these believers

  977. and had a relationship

  978. with them.

  979. Secondly,

  980. we also know

  981. from Acts 4.36

  982. that Barnabas' actual name

  983. was Joseph,

  984. but that he was nicknamed

  985. Barnabas,

  986. which means

  987. son of encouragement.

  988. He was a man

  989. known for encouraging

  990. and exhorting

  991. those around him.

  992. Remember when Paul

  993. returned to Jerusalem

  994. after his conversion

  995. because of his history

  996. of persecuting the church,

  997. rounding up Christians

  998. and putting them into jail

  999. and getting them killed?

  1000. The apostles

  1001. were understandably

  1002. wary of them

  1003. and at that time

  1004. when they were not

1005. willing to take the risk

  1006. and bring Paul

  1007. into their midst,

  1008. it was Barnabas

1009. who went and grabbed Saul

  1010. and brought him in

  1011. and introduced him

  1012. to the apostles.

  1013. And later,

  1014. in Acts 15,

  1015. we'll also see

  1016. that when Saul

  1017. or Paul,

  1018. his Roman name,

  1019. when Paul insists

  1020. on not taking

  1021. John and Mark

  1022. along with them

  1023. on their missionary journey

  1024. because formerly

  1025. John and Mark

  1026. had deserted them,

  1027. it's Barnabas

  1028. who insists

1029. on giving John and Mark

  1030. a second chance.

  1031. Barnabas was a man

  1032. who always

  1033. thought the best

  1034. of people.

  1035. He always saw

  1036. the good

  1037. in people.

  1038. He encouraged

  1039. people in it.

  1040. And that's precisely

  1041. what Barnabas does

  1042. in verse 23.

  1043. When he came

  1044. and saw the grace

  1045. of God,

  1046. he was glad

  1047. and he exhorted

  1048. them all

  1049. to remain faithful

  1050. to the Lord

  1051. with steadfast purpose.

  1052. the word

  1053. translated

  1054. exhorted

  1055. is the verb

  1056. form of the word

  1057. encouragement

  1058. in Barnabas,

  1059. son of encouragement.

  1060. I'm sure

  1061. this new church

  1062. in Antioch

  1063. was not perfect

  1064. just like

  1065. every other church

  1066. that's ever existed.

  1067. Particularly

  1068. considering the fact

  1069. that this included

  1070. Greek converts

  1071. who were really new

  1072. to this whole

  1073. faith,

  1074. Jewish faith

  1075. or the Christianity.

  1076. they were probably

  1077. doing a lot

  1078. of things wrong.

  1079. They probably

  1080. were clueless

  1081. about a lot

  1082. of things.

  1083. But nevertheless

  1084. it says that

  1085. when Barnabas

  1086. came and saw

  1087. the grace

  1088. of God

  1089. he was glad.

  1090. However imperfect

  1091. this church

  1092. may have been,

  1093. Barnabas acknowledged

  1094. the grace

  1095. of God

  1096. at work

  1097. among them.

  1098. He saw

  1099. that they were

  1100. genuine believers

  1101. and he was

  1102. gladdened in his

  1103. heart because

  1104. of it.

  1105. and he exhorted

  1106. them to be

  1107. faithful to the

  1108. Lord with

  1109. steadfast purpose.

  1110. Though uncertainties

  1111. and doubts

  1112. can creep

  1113. into the minds

  1114. and hearts

  1115. of young believers

  1116. especially new

  1117. believers,

  1118. Barnabas exhorted

  1119. them to be

  1120. unwavering in

  1121. their faith

  1122. in the Lord.

  1123. I thank God

  1124. that we have

  1125. many such

  1126. encouragers

  1127. in our church.

  1128. I've personally

  1129. been built up

  1130. by and encouraged

  1131. by some of you

  1132. when I've been

  1133. discouraged at times.

  1134. And I've heard

  1135. of many instances

  1136. of you all

  1137. counseling one

  1138. another,

  1139. comforting one

  1140. another,

  1141. exhorting one

  1142. another.

  1143. I pray that you'll

  1144. do so more

  1145. and more.

  1146. And that God

  1147. would raise up

  1148. more and more

  1149. people like

  1150. Barnabas in

  1151. our church,

  1152. sons and

  1153. daughters of

  1154. encouragement.

  1155. Let's be a

  1156. people who

  1157. even in the

  1158. midst of

  1159. difficulties,

  1160. even in the

  1161. midst of

  1162. disagreements

  1163. and conflicts,

  1164. a people who

  1165. can see the

  1166. grace of God

  1167. at work in

  1168. each other,

  1169. who can celebrate

  1170. that and thank

  1171. God for that,

  1172. encourage one

  1173. another in that.

  1174. But how can we

  1175. become more like

  1176. Barnabas?

  1177. Verse 24 tells us

  1178. why Barnabas was

  1179. the way he was.

  1180. It says,

  1181. for he was a

  1182. good man,

  1183. full of the

  1184. Holy Spirit

  1185. and of faith.

  1186. good.

  1187. The word good

  1188. is an adjective

  1189. that is particularly

  1190. associated with

  1191. God throughout

  1192. the scriptures.

  1193. That's what Jesus

  1194. says in Mark

  1195. 10, 18,

  1196. no one is good

  1197. except God

  1198. alone.

  1199. Barnabas was a

  1200. good man,

  1201. meaning he was

  1202. a godly man.

  1203. He exemplified

  1204. the goodness of

  1205. God in his own

  1206. dealings with

  1207. others.

  1208. He was a man

  1209. of integrity.

  1210. He was also full

  1211. of the Holy Spirit

  1212. and of faith.

  1213. He was not

  1214. controlled by his

  1215. own impulses

  1216. and selfish

  1217. desires.

  1218. He was controlled

  1219. by the Spirit

  1220. who indwelled him.

  1221. And the power

  1222. of the Spirit

  1223. of God was

  1224. evidenced in his

  1225. ministry in

  1226. whatever he did.

  1227. He was also

  1228. full of faith.

  1229. Barnabas was not

  1230. a man who did

  1231. things merely

  1232. by what he

  1233. could see,

  1234. how he felt.

  1235. He's someone

  1236. who acted

  1237. and made decisions

  1238. according to

  1239. what he believed,

  1240. what he knew

  1241. to be true

  1242. through his

  1243. faith in the

  1244. Word of God.

  1245. Barnabas was

  1246. an effective

  1247. encourager and

  1248. bridge builder

  1249. in this church,

  1250. not because he

  1251. had mastered

  1252. some strategy

  1253. of making

  1254. friends and

  1255. influencing people,

  1256. but because he

  1257. was a good

  1258. man,

  1259. because he

  1260. was a godly

  1261. man.

  1262. There is no

  1263. shortcut or

  1264. silver bullet

  1265. to spiritual

  1266. power.

  1267. If you want

  1268. to empower

  1269. people,

  1270. you must be

  1271. empowered by

  1272. the Holy Spirit.

  1273. If you want

  1274. to produce

  1275. praying disciples,

  1276. you must be

  1277. a man and

  1278. woman of

  1279. prayer yourself.

  1280. Let's pray

  1281. that we might

  1282. be filled

  1283. with the Spirit

  1284. more and

  1285. more,

  1286. as Barnabas

  1287. was,

  1288. to come under

  1289. his influence

  1290. and power

  1291. more and

  1292. more,

  1293. to come under

  1294. the influence

  1295. of God's

  1296. Word more

  1297. and more,

  1298. so that we

  1299. too might be

  1300. good man and

  1301. woman who

  1302. can encourage

  1303. and build

  1304. up others.

  1305. And as Barnabas

  1306. is serving this

  1307. way in verse

  1308. 24,

  1309. he says,

  1310. a great

  1311. many people,

  1312. more people

  1313. are added

  1314. to the Lord.

  1315. My fourth

  1316. point is this,

  1317. teachers teach.

  1318. The addition

  1319. of great

  1320. many people

  1321. produced some

  1322. new needs

  1323. in this new

  1324. church in

  1325. Antioch,

  1326. and others

  1327. needed to

  1328. step up

  1329. to fill

  1330. the void.

  1331. He says

  1332. in verses

  1333. 25 to 26,

  1334. so Barnabas

  1335. went to

  1336. Tarsus

  1337. to look

  1338. for Saul,

  1339. and when

  1340. he had

  1341. found him,

  1342. he brought

  1343. him to

  1344. Antioch.

  1345. For a

  1346. whole year

  1347. they met

  1348. with the

  1349. church and

  1350. taught a

  1351. great many

  1352. people,

  1353. and in

  1354. Antioch the

  1355. disciples were

  1356. first called

  1357. Christians.

  1358. Barnabas

  1359. traveled to

  1360. Tarsus to

  1361. recruit Saul

  1362. for his

  1363. ministry in

  1364. Antioch,

  1365. and Saul,

  1366. it appears,

  1367. was a

  1368. particularly

  1369. effective

  1370. teacher.

  1371. Later in

  1372. Acts 14,

  1373. 12,

  1374. we learn

  1375. that when

  1376. Barnabas

  1377. and Saul

  1378. are traveling

  1379. together on

  1380. their missionary

  1381. journeys,

  1382. Saul came

  1383. to be known

  1384. as the

  1385. chief speaker,

  1386. likely because

  1387. he was

  1388. maybe more

  1389. knowledgeable

  1390. about the

  1391. word or

  1392. theology or

  1393. because he

  1394. was a

  1395. more effective

  1396. teacher.

  1397. this is an

  1398. important aspect

  1399. of being a

  1400. part of the

  1401. church.

  1402. When Jesus

  1403. commissioned his

  1404. apostles in

  1405. Matthew 28,

  1406. 18 to 20,

  1407. he didn't

  1408. merely command

  1409. them to

  1410. baptize people.

  1411. He told

  1412. them to

  1413. teach them

  1414. to observe

  1415. everything I

  1416. have commanded

  1417. you.

  1418. Discipling

  1419. others does

  1420. not end with

  1421. conversion.

  1422. It doesn't

  1423. end with

  1424. baptism.

  1425. It continues

  1426. with teaching

  1427. everything that

  1428. Jesus has

  1429. commanded us.

  1430. So it's

  1431. reductionistic and

  1432. simplistic to

  1433. say, well, I

  1434. believe the

  1435. gospel and

  1436. that's all

  1437. that matters.

  1438. There's

  1439. something wrong

  1440. with the

  1441. baby that

  1442. doesn't grow

  1443. after being

  1444. born.

  1445. Likewise,

  1446. there's

  1447. something wrong

  1448. with the

  1449. Christian who

  1450. is born

  1451. again through

  1452. faith in

  1453. Jesus Christ

  1454. by the

  1455. Spirit of

  1456. God and

  1457. yet does

  1458. not grow

  1459. in faith

  1460. and obedience

  1461. to his

  1462. or her

  1463. Lord Jesus

  1464. Christ.

  1465. teachers are

  1466. a gift to

  1467. the church

  1468. given by

  1469. God to

  1470. instruct us

  1471. in the

  1472. will of

  1473. God.

  1474. Once again,

  1475. I'm grateful

  1476. for the

  1477. teachers that

  1478. God has

  1479. placed in

  1480. our midst.

  1481. There are

  1482. many people

  1483. among us

  1484. who are

  1485. gifted to

  1486. study the

  1487. Bible deeply

  1488. and then to

  1489. communicate the

  1490. findings clearly.

  1491. I pray that

  1492. God will

  1493. bless all of

  1494. you to do

  1495. so more and

  1496. more for

  1497. his glory as

  1498. well.

  1499. Fifth,

  1500. prophets

  1501. prophesied.

  1502. It says in

  1503. verses 27

  1504. to 28,

  1505. Now in

  1506. these days

  1507. prophets came

  1508. down from

  1509. Jerusalem to

  1510. Antioch and

  1511. one of them

  1512. named Agabus

  1513. stood up and

  1514. foretold by the

  1515. Spirit that

  1516. there would be a

  1517. great famine over

  1518. all the world.

  1519. This took place

  1520. in the days of

  1521. Claudius.

  1522. A group of

  1523. prophets came

  1524. down from

  1525. Jerusalem to

  1526. Antioch and

  1527. they used

  1528. their gifts to

  1529. minister to

  1530. the church

  1531. there, the

  1532. new growing

  1533. church in

  1534. Antioch.

  1535. Agabus was

  1536. one of those

  1537. prophets.

  1538. He was a

  1539. highly gifted

  1540. and a

  1541. prominent prophet

  1542. in the early

  1543. church.

  1544. We'll encounter

  1545. him again later

  1546. in Acts chapter

    Acts 21 chapter mention

  1547. 21.

  1548. And it says

  1549. that he

  1550. foretold by

  1551. the Spirit

  1552. that there

  1553. would be a

  1554. famine, great

  1555. famine over

  1556. all the world.

  1557. The phrase

  1558. over all the

  1559. world doesn't

  1560. literally refer

  1561. to the entire

  1562. globe, but is

  1563. a phrase that

  1564. is often used

  1565. in ancient

  1566. literature to

  1567. refer to the

  1568. entire inhabited

  1569. world known at

  1570. the time or

  1571. to the Roman

  1572. Empire more

  1573. narrowly.

  1574. And Luke

  1575. adds an

  1576. editorial note

  1577. here to

  1578. confirm that

  1579. the famine

  1580. did indeed

  1581. occur in

  1582. the days of

  1583. Claudius,

  1584. which was

  1585. between 41

  1586. and 54

  1587. AD.

  1588. Other

  1589. historians

  1590. corroborate that

  1591. this famine

  1592. did take

  1593. place.

  1594. It was a

  1595. widespread

  1596. famine that

  1597. encompassed

  1598. Egypt, Syria,

  1599. Judea, and

  1600. Greece during

  1601. 45 to 47

  1602. AD, which

  1603. would have

  1604. been about a

  1605. year after

  1606. Agabus'

  1607. prophecy.

  1608. And this

  1609. prophecy enabled

  1610. the church in

  1611. Antioch, which

  1612. was wealthier

  1613. than the church

  1614. in Judea, to

  1615. collect and

  1616. send relief to

  1617. the saints

  1618. there, the

  1619. brothers living

  1620. in Judea.

  1621. Prophecy is a

  1622. gift of the

  1623. Holy Spirit by

  1624. which a

  1625. believer receives

  1626. and then

  1627. communicates

  1628. divine revelation.

  1629. And the

  1630. purpose of it is

  1631. to build up the

  1632. church, as it

  1633. says in 1

  1634. Corinthians 14.

  1635. Prophecy is not

  1636. something that

  1637. adds to the

  1638. salvific content

  1639. of Scripture.

  1640. Scriptures, as it

  1641. says in 2

  1642. Timothy 3.15, are

  1643. able to make us

  1644. wise for salvation

  1645. through faith in

  1646. Christ Jesus.

  1647. Prophecy doesn't

  1648. add anything to

  1649. that.

  1650. It's not something

  1651. that is normative

  1652. and authoritative for

  1653. all Christians at

  1654. all times in all

  1655. places.

  1656. Rather, prophecy

  1657. has a more

  1658. specific circumstantial

  1659. content.

  1660. For example,

  1661. Agabus'

  1662. prophecy applied to

  1663. people in that

  1664. particular place

  1665. at that particular

  1666. time.

  1667. It does not

  1668. apply to us.

  1669. Similarly, when

  1670. people prophesy in

  1671. our church, it's a

  1672. prophecy that's given

  1673. in that particular

  1674. time to this

  1675. particular people

  1676. to build them up.

  1677. Prophecy was not

  1678. something that our

  1679. church was

  1680. historically strong

  1681. in.

  1682. But 1 Corinthians

    1 Corinthians 14:1

  1683. chapter 14,

  1684. verse 1,

  1685. teaches us to

  1686. pursue love,

  1687. and earnestly

  1688. desire the

  1689. spiritual gifts,

  1690. especially that

  1691. you may prophesy.

  1692. So that's what we

  1693. did.

  1694. We invited a team

  1695. of prophets from

  1696. a sister church in

  1697. our denomination to

  1698. visit us a couple

  1699. years ago.

  1700. They preached for

  1701. us and did a

  1702. prophecy seminar for

  1703. us, which was a

  1704. powerful time of

  1705. ministry for many

  1706. of you who were

  1707. able to participate.

  1708. We prayed

  1709. earnestly that God

  1710. would impart and

  1711. distribute the

  1712. gifts of prophecy

  1713. more liberally among

  1714. us.

  1715. And he has

  1716. answered that

  1717. prayer to a

  1718. large degree.

  1719. not only has

  1720. God brought in

  1721. new people who

  1722. have the gifts

  1723. of prophecy,

  1724. he has also

  1725. raised up from

  1726. our own midst

  1727. people with

  1728. gifts of

  1729. prophecy.

  1730. I'm so thankful

  1731. for many of you

  1732. who use your

  1733. gifts to build up

  1734. our church in

  1735. this way.

  1736. You have been

  1737. hearing regularly

  1738. from these

  1739. prophets, people

  1740. with gifts of

  1741. prophecy during our

  1742. church services.

  1743. many of you have

  1744. not heard from

  1745. other prophets in

  1746. our church who

  1747. also have strong

  1748. gifts of prophecy,

  1749. some of whom have

  1750. not been able to

  1751. come during COVID

  1752. during extenuating

  1753. circumstances.

  1754. But I look forward

  1755. to, I can't wait to

1756. have you all hear from

  1757. them also, Lord

  1758. willing, in the

  1759. near future.

  1760. Sixth, disciples

  1761. give.

  1762. It says in

  1763. verses 29 to 30,

  1764. so the disciples

  1765. determined everyone

  1766. according to his

  1767. ability to send

  1768. relief to the

  1769. brothers living in

  1770. Judea.

  1771. And they did so,

  1772. sending it to the

  1773. elders by the hand

  1774. of Barnabas and

  1775. Saul.

  1776. The disciples of

  1777. Jesus Christ in

  1778. Antioch determined

  1779. everyone according

  1780. to his ability to

  1781. send relief to the

  1782. brothers living in

  1783. Judea.

  1784. From the very

  1785. beginnings of the

  1786. church here in

  1787. Acts, we see that

  1788. the early church,

  1789. there was inter-church

  1790. partnership among

  1791. them.

  1792. Christians in the

  1793. early church didn't

  1794. have the attitude of,

  1795. well, I care about

  1796. my own local church

  1797. and nothing else.

  1798. They were partnered

  1799. with each other

  1800. and served each

  1801. other.

1802. We see this in the

  1803. repeated mentions of

  1804. other believers'

  1805. travels and the

  1806. act of sending out

  1807. believers to other

  1808. churches throughout

  1809. this passage.

  1810. Verse 22, they

  1811. sent Barnabas to

  1812. Antioch.

  1813. Verse 27, now in

  1814. these days prophets

  1815. came down from

  1816. Jerusalem to

  1817. Antioch.

  1818. Verse 29, the

  1819. disciples determined

  1820. to send relief to

  1821. the brothers living in

  1822. Judea.

  1823. And finally, verse 30,

  1824. they did so, sending

1825. it to the elders by

  1826. the hand of Barnabas

  1827. and Saul.

  1828. The more theologically

  1829. mature and spiritually

  1830. gifted congregation in

  1831. Jerusalem sent others

  1832. who were gifted from

  1833. their church to minister

  1834. to the burgeoning church

  1835. in Antioch.

  1836. And likewise, the new

  1837. church in Antioch,

  1838. which was more

  1839. financially wealthy,

  1840. better off, then sent

  1841. financial gifts to the

1842. church in Judea in order

  1843. to help them in

  1844. anticipation of the

1845. famine in a time of

  1846. need.

1847. I've seen you guys do

  1848. this also time and

  1849. time again.

1850. I've seen many of you

  1851. give generously to the

  1852. needs of this church.

  1853. I remember last year

1854. when in a span of two

1855. weeks, each of you gave

  1856. according to your own

  1857. ability and we

  1858. collected $20,000 toward

  1859. the COVID emergency

  1860. fund.

  1861. which we have now

  1862. designated as part of

  1863. our benevolence fund to

  1864. help the needy saints

  1865. among us.

1866. Over the last four years,

  1867. we have given a

  1868. cumulative sum of

  1869. around $40,000 to

  1870. Sovereign Grace

  1871. Churches, our

  1872. denomination, much of

1873. which has been used to

  1874. help needy sister

  1875. churches and to plant

  1876. new churches throughout

  1877. the U.S. and abroad.

  1878. In partnerships like

  1879. this, we can accomplish

  1880. more toward Christ's

1881. mission than we can on

  1882. our own.

1883. And I pray that God

1884. will help us to do so

  1885. and lean into these

  1886. partnerships more and

  1887. more in the future.

  1888. Notice that the word

1889. church is used twice in

  1890. this passage.

  1891. First in verse 22,

1892. where it refers to the

  1893. church in Jerusalem.

  1894. Second in verse 26,

1895. where it refers to the

  1896. church in Antioch.

  1897. This shows that the

  1898. church in Antioch,

1899. made up of new Greek

  1900. believers, is just as

1901. much a church as the

  1902. original church in

  1903. Jerusalem, made up

  1904. primarily of Jews,

  1905. Jewish converts.

  1906. There may be multiple

  1907. congregations, multiple

  1908. local churches, but there

  1909. is one universal church.

  1910. Though many of the

  1911. believers in the church

  1912. in Antioch likely have

  1913. never met the believers

  1914. in the church in

  1915. Jerusalem, they still

  1916. call them brothers in

1917. verse 29, out of their

  1918. recognition that they are

  1919. members of the same

  1920. family of God.

  1921. Christians all over the

  1922. world look different and

  1923. they talk differently.

  1924. We have many differences

  1925. among us.

1926. Christians in the south are

  1927. very different from the

  1928. Christians in the north.

  1929. Christians in Africa and

  1930. Asia are very different

  1931. from the Christians in

  1932. Europe.

1933. But we must remember that

  1934. Christ binds us all

  1935. together by one spirit.

1936. He says at the end of

1937. verse 26 that in Antioch

  1938. the disciples were first

  1939. called Christians.

  1940. I love that little

  1941. insertion by Luke, the

  1942. historian here.

1943. The form of the word

  1944. Christian suggests that it

1945. was a word that had Latin

  1946. origins, which means it's

1947. not a term that the

  1948. Christians adopted for

  1949. themselves.

  1950. rather it's a term that

  1951. others label them with,

  1952. probably the Romans.

1953. It may well have been a

  1954. derogatory term, which

1955. started as the church was

  1956. starting to establish

  1957. itself among the Greeks.

1958. Now that there were Greek

  1959. converts joining the church,

1960. they can no longer just

  1961. call Christianity a Jewish

  1962. sect.

1963. They were like, what do we

  1964. call these guys?

  1965. Oh, let's call them

  1966. Christians, since they

1967. follow that guy that they

  1968. call the Christ.

  1969. But the Christians

  1970. embraced that label.

  1971. Because they were proud

1972. to follow a man named

1973. Jesus, who is the Christ,

  1974. the Messiah, the King,

1975. the Son of God, who died

1976. to save them and was raised

  1977. from the dead victoriously.

  1978. A couple years ago, I met

  1979. a Christian chaplain at a

  1980. prominent university.

1981. It was like a gathering

  1982. for ministers.

1983. And he was supposed to be

  1984. a Christian chaplain for

  1985. this university, but he

1986. not only denied the death

  1987. and resurrection of Jesus

  1988. Christ, he expressly

  1989. refused to call himself

  1990. a Christian.

1991. He called himself instead a

  1992. follower of Jesus the

  1993. Nazarene.

  1994. Nazarene.

  1995. I respectfully told him

1996. and quoted this verse to

  1997. him, in Antioch, the

  1998. disciples were first called

  1999. Christians.

2000. And tried to talk to him

2001. about the fact that you

  2002. can't associate yourself

  2003. with Christ and then

  2004. dissociate yourself with

  2005. Christ's body, his bride,

  2006. his people.

  2007. That Christian, the term,

  2008. has a venerable heritage.

2009. That we are not merely

  2010. followers of some man

2011. named Jesus who did some

2012. good works and then said

  2013. some wise things.

2014. But that we are those who

  2015. have pledged allegiance to

  2016. Jesus called the Christ,

  2017. the King, the Messiah,

2018. the Savior of the world.

2019. And that we are called to

2020. submit to him and follow

2021. him in all of life.

2022. I think there are people

  2023. who increasingly, in this

  2024. area especially, were

  2025. embarrassed to be called

  2026. Christians.

2027. Who are embarrassed of other

  2028. Christians.

  2029. Sometimes I see Christians

  2030. Christians who are more

  2031. critical and more

  2032. slanderous toward other

  2033. Christians than

  2034. unbelievers.

2035. That should not be the

  2036. case.

  2037. There was a time when I

  2038. was this immature elementary

2039. school kid in South Korea

  2040. growing up.

  2041. I had, for a short time,

  2042. my paternal grandfather

2043. living with me and my

  2044. family.

2045. And being the insecure and

  2046. socially awkward kid that

  2047. I was, I was so embarrassed

  2048. of my grandfather.

2049. I didn't want him to come to

  2050. my school.

  2051. So I told him, don't come

  2052. anywhere near my school.

2053. Of course, he comes, of all

  2054. things, picking up garbage,

2055. trying to clean up the area.

  2056. And I was mortified.

  2057. I was like, grandfather, I

2058. told you not to come.

2059. I was really mean to him.

  2060. Scolded at him.

2061. Even though he probably had

2062. more reasons to be embarrassed

2063. of me than I had of him.

2064. I'm ashamed of that now,

  2065. looking back.

2066. Because no matter how much I

2067. didn't want to be associated

2068. with him, he was my

  2069. grandfather.

2070. He was proud of me because

2071. I was his only grandson.

  2072. I didn't want anything to do

  2073. with him.

2074. It's the same way for us.

2075. You might be embarrassed by some

2076. of the political views of

2077. Christians, some of the things

2078. that they said, some of the

2079. things that they do, some of the

2080. things that we have, churches have

  2081. done throughout church history.

2082. Well, if they got to take a good

2083. look at us and have a relationship

2084. with us, to be honest, they'll

2085. probably be embarrassed of all of us

  2086. as well.

2087. But none of that changes the fact

2088. that if we have faith in the

2089. Christ who died and was raised,

2090. we belong to the same family of

  2091. God.

  2092. Remember this, brothers and

  2093. sisters, before you are

2094. anything else, you are a

  2095. Christian.

2096. And as such, let us embrace

2097. the church of God, love his

2098. people, serve his people, because

2099. the church grows as its

  2100. interdependent members partner and

2101. serve together in the grace of

  2102. God.

2103. Let me close by reading a part of

2104. this Charles Spurgeon quote that

2105. Andy Farmer shared last Sunday.

2106. It's very impactful for me.

2107. He says, I felt that I could not

2108. be happy without fellowship with

  2109. the people of God.

2110. I wanted to be wherever they

  2111. were.

2112. And if anybody ridiculed them, I

2113. wished to be ridiculed with them.

2114. And if people had an ugly name

2115. for them, I wanted to be called by

  2116. that ugly name.

2117. For I felt that unless I suffered

2118. with Christ in his humiliation,

2119. I could not expect to reign with

  2120. him in his glory.

2121. Heavenly Father, we pray that you

2122. will help us to be a people who

2123. are unashamed of the gospel.

2124. help us to be a people who are unashamed of the

2125. people who are unashamed of the gospel.

2126. For it is the power of God for salvation for

  2127. those who believe.

2128. Help us to remember our identity as

  2129. Christians.

2130. That we belong to you.

2131. And that for that reason, we belong to

2132. one another as brothers and sisters in

  2133. Christ.

2134. help us to love and serve one another

2135. as you command us to.

2136. In Jesus' name we pray.

  2137. Amen.
