  1. We're in Acts chapter 13 today, going from verse 1 to verse 12.

    Acts 13 chapter mention

  2. Let me pray for the reading and preaching of God's Word.

  3. Heavenly Father,

  4. we have gathered around your Word and around your table again,

  5. because we are your people.

  6. You are our Lord, our King, our God.

  7. We worship you.

  8. We want to hear you speak to us in your Word.

  9. Amen.

  10. Address us.

  11. Bring conviction by your Spirit.

  12. And as we incline our ears, our hearts to you,

  13. we pray that you would make us a church

  14. that exemplifies the truth that we find in this passage.

  15. A church that has a heart toward reaching the lost.

  16. A heart to go to the end of the earth.

  17. A church where missionaries are set apart

  18. and sent out for your glory.

  19. For the glory of the name of your Son, Jesus.

  20. We pray that you would do that mighty work among us

  21. even as we go,

  22. as we hear.

  23. Use me, Lord.

  24. May the words of my mouth

  25. and the meditations of all of our hearts

  26. be pleasing in your sight.

  27. Oh, Lord, our rock and redeemer.

  28. In Jesus' name we pray.

  29. Amen.

  30. Amen.

  31. Acts chapter 13, verses 1 to 12.

    Acts 13:1–12

  32. Now there were in the church at Antioch

  33. prophets and teachers,

  34. Barnabas,

  35. Simeon who was called Nigel,

  36. Lucius of Cyrene,

  37. Manan,

  38. a lifelong friend of Herod the Tetrarch,

  39. and Saul.

  40. While they were worshiping the Lord and fasting,

  41. the Holy Spirit said,

  42. Set apart for me Barnabas and Saul

  43. for the work to which I have called them.

  44. Then after fasting and praying,

  45. they laid their hands on them

  46. and sent them off.

  47. So being sent out by the Holy Spirit,

  48. they went down to Seleucia

  49. and from there they sailed to Cyprus.

  50. When they arrived at Salamis,

  51. they proclaimed the word of God

  52. in the synagogues of the Jews

  53. and they had John to assist them.

  54. When they had gone through the whole island

  55. as far as Paphos,

  56. they came upon a certain magician,

  57. a Jewish false prophet named Bar-Jesus.

  58. He was with the proconsul,

  59. Sergius Paulus,

  60. a man of intelligence

  61. who summoned Barnabas and Saul

  62. and sought to hear the word of God.

  63. But Elimas the magician,

  64. for that is the meaning of his name,

  65. opposed them,

  66. seeking to turn the proconsul

  67. away from the faith.

  68. But Saul, who was also called Paul,

  69. filled with the Holy Spirit,

  70. looked intently at him and said,

  71. You son of the devil,

  72. you enemy of all righteousness,

  73. full of all deceit and villainy,

  74. will you not stop making crooked

  75. the straight paths of the Lord?

  76. And now, behold,

  77. the hand of the Lord is upon you,

  78. and you will be blind

  79. and unable to see the sun for a time.

  80. Immediately,

  81. mist and darkness fell upon him,

  82. and he went about seeking people

  83. to lead him by the hand.

  84. Then the proconsul believed

  85. when he saw what had occurred,

  86. for he was astonished

  87. at the teaching of the Lord.

  88. This is God's holy and authoritative word.

  89. Far from being of Western religion

  90. or white man's religion

  91. that it's frequently made out to be nowadays,

  92. Christianity from its very inception

  93. has been a multi-ethnic

  94. and trans-regional movement.

  95. The entire Gospel of Luke

  96. has a general movement toward Jerusalem,

  97. where Jesus dies on the cross

  98. and is raised from the dead

  99. for the salvation

  100. of all those who put their faith in him.

  101. And the entire book of Acts,

  102. which is Luke's sequel,

  103. has a movement away from Jerusalem,

  104. outward from Jerusalem to Samaria

  105. and to the end of the earth.

  106. And we have seen the Gospel spread

  107. in Jerusalem and in Samaria,

  108. and starting in chapter 13,

  109. in earnest we begin to see

  110. the mission go forward

  111. among the Gentiles

  112. to the end of the earth.

  113. And at first,

  114. the Gospel of Jesus, as we know,

  115. took hold primarily in Asia,

  116. Africa, and Europe,

  117. reaching Jews, Samaritans,

  118. Romans, Greeks, Armenians,

  119. Copts, Ethiopians, Indians,

  120. Berbers, Syrians, and Persians.

  121. But then,

  122. it spread out even further west and east,

  123. reaching the Vandals,

  124. the Celts,

  125. the Anglo-Saxons,

  126. Vikings, Slavs,

  127. Turks, Russians, and Chinese.

  128. Obviously, it has continued to spread

  129. even beyond that,

  130. taking hold in North and South America.

  131. Just 100 years ago,

  132. the countries with the largest

  133. population of Christians

  134. were in the order.

  135. U.S.,

  136. Russia,

  137. Germany,

  138. France,

  139. and Britain.

  140. But today,

  141. it's, again,

  142. in order,

  143. U.S.,

  144. Brazil,

  145. Russia,

  146. China,

  147. and Mexico.

  148. Just in 100 years.

  149. the gravitational center of Christianity

  150. has moved all across the earth,

  151. and the gospel has flourished

  152. in every single continent,

  153. so that one can truly say

  154. that there is no such thing

  155. as a particular Christian culture

  156. or Christian civilization.

  157. In fact,

  158. there has already been

  159. multiple Christian cultures

  160. and Christian civilizations.

  161. civilizations.

  162. Why is this the case?

  163. Well, one,

  164. because our God

  165. is the God of all peoples.

  166. And just,

  167. not,

  168. He's not just for one

  169. people group.

  170. And two,

  171. because Christianity

  172. has been,

  173. from the beginning,

  174. a missionary religion.

  175. That's what we see here

  176. in Acts chapter 13.

    Acts 13 chapter mention

  177. This passage teaches us

  178. that missionaries

  179. are sent out by the Holy Spirit

  180. to the end of the earth

  181. to proclaim

  182. the Word of Christ.

  183. And we learn

  184. several important things

  185. about Christian missionaries.

  186. They are,

  187. one,

  188. sent by the Spirit,

  189. two,

  190. set apart by the church,

  191. three,

  192. opposed by the devil,

  193. four,

  194. filled with the Spirit,

  195. and five,

  196. focused on the Word.

  197. So first,

  198. let's look at this

  199. in order that missionaries

  200. are sent by the Spirit.

  201. Look how,

  202. look at how Luke emphasizes

  203. the initiating role

  204. of the Holy Spirit

  205. throughout this passage.

  206. It says in verse 2

  207. that while the church

  208. at Antioch

  209. were worshiping the Lord

  210. and fasting,

  211. the Holy Spirit said,

  212. set apart for me Barnabas

  213. and Saul

  214. for the work

  215. to which I have called them.

  216. The Spirit of God

  217. is speaking directly.

  218. The triune God

  219. reigns over the church

  220. and the Lord Jesus

  221. is King

  222. over His church

  223. and for this reason

  224. it is His Spirit,

  225. the Holy Spirit,

  226. that provides

  227. the initial impetus

  228. for this commissioning

  229. of Barnabas and Saul

  230. for mission.

  231. There's a conceptual

  232. connection between

  233. the Holy Spirit

  234. and His command

  235. to set apart

  236. for Him

  237. Barnabas and Saul.

  238. The word holy

  239. itself means

  240. set apart,

  241. consecrated.

  242. So then Barnabas

  243. and Saul

  244. are being set apart

  245. for the work

  246. of God

  247. who is set apart.

  248. when you go to weddings,

  249. usually the first

  250. two rows of seats

  251. have a sign

  252. that says

  253. they are reserved.

  254. You may have noticed

  255. that there is no such sign

  256. on the first two rows

  257. in our church.

  258. You guys can move up

  259. whenever you like.

  260. That is not part

  261. of the sermon.

  262. But,

  263. I lost my place.

  264. Sorry.

  265. You have seats

  266. reserved at weddings

  267. because they are

  268. seats that are

  269. set apart.

  270. They are consecrated.

  271. It is reserved

  272. for family members

  273. of the bride

  274. and the groom.

  275. And similarly,

  276. Barnabas and Saul

  277. have been

  278. set apart.

  279. Meaning,

  280. they are to be

  281. set aside

  282. for a special purpose,

  283. for God's

  284. missionary purpose

  285. in this case.

  286. this is an important

  287. point.

  288. Because it is not

  289. the church

  290. or a missions

  291. agency

  292. or a spiritual

  293. mentor

  294. that calls

  295. people into

  296. ministry.

  297. It is the spirit

  298. of God

  299. who calls

  300. people

  301. into ministry.

  302. Some Christian

  303. denominations

  304. use the language

  305. of search

  306. and call

  307. to refer to

  308. local churches

  309. hiring their ministers.

  310. So,

  311. they form

  312. a search committee,

  313. they start

  314. interviewing

  315. candidates,

  316. they search

  317. for ministers,

  318. and then

  319. when they find

  320. someone that they like,

  321. they call them.

  322. But,

  323. strictly speaking,

  324. it is not the church

  325. that calls

  326. a minister.

  327. It is God

  328. who calls them.

  329. Set apart

  330. for me,

  331. says the Holy Spirit,

  332. Barnabas and Saul,

  333. for the work

  334. to which I

  335. have called them.

  336. That means,

  337. at the very least,

  338. that it is incumbent

  339. upon missionaries

  340. and other Christian

  341. laborers

  342. to do

  343. God's will.

  344. God's will.

  345. They serve

  346. the church,

  347. yes.

  348. And they evangelize

  349. for the sake

  350. of the lost,

  351. yes.

  352. But their Lord,

  353. their commander,

  354. is not other people.

  355. It's not an agency.

  356. It's God.

  357. It is their delight

  358. and privilege

  359. to carry out

  360. the will

  361. of their master.

  362. And this is

  363. a liberating truth,

  364. especially when

  365. various people,

  366. agencies,

  367. institutions,

  368. and cultural

  369. forces,

  370. say and demand

  371. conflicting things

  372. of us.

  373. God's labors

  374. are not

  375. like politicians

  376. who must carry out

  377. the will

  378. of their voting

  379. constituency.

  380. We sure can listen

  381. and learn from

  382. what other people

  383. have to say,

  384. but ultimately,

  385. the Christian laborer

  386. must obey

  387. the word of God

  388. and the spirit

  389. of God.

  390. They are sent

  391. by the spirit.

  392. But this doesn't

  393. mean that every

  394. Christian missionary

  395. or minister

  396. is a freelancer

  397. that is unaccountable

  398. to any other

  399. group of people.

  400. The Holy Spirit

  401. calls and sends,

  402. but it is the church

  403. that sets apart

  404. Barnabas and Saul

  405. for their missionary work.

  406. Look at what the Holy Spirit

  407. says in verse 2.

  408. Set apart for me,

  409. Barnabas and Saul,

  410. for the work

  411. to which I have

  412. called them.

  413. the Holy Spirit

  414. commands the church

  415. to set them apart,

  416. to consecrate them,

  417. to dedicate them

  418. to this mission.

  419. It's not the called

  420. missionary alone

  421. who has a role

  422. to play.

  423. The local church

  424. has a role to play

  425. in the sending out

  426. of missionaries.

  427. Why do I say that

  428. this is the role

  429. of the local church?

  430. Verse 1 says,

  431. Now there were

  432. in the church

  433. at Antioch

  434. prophets

  435. and teachers.

  436. Barnabas,

  437. Simeon,

  438. who was called

  439. Niger,

  440. Lucius of Cyrene,

  441. Manan,

  442. a lifelong friend

  443. of Herod the Tetrarch,

  444. and Saul.

  445. It is the local church,

  446. a gathering of God's people

  447. in the city of Antioch

  448. that while they were

  449. worshiping and fasting,

  450. together they received

  451. this revelation,

  452. this instruction

  453. from the Lord.

  454. This short verse,

  455. verse 1,

  456. tells us a number

  457. of things about

  458. the church at Antioch.

  459. One,

  460. it's a local church.

  461. It's not the universal church

  462. all over the world.

  463. It's a church at Antioch.

  464. It's the local church.

  465. Barnabas and Saul

  466. are not sent off

  467. by a separate group

  468. or agency.

  469. They are sent off

  470. by the local church itself.

  471. Nor are they sent off

  472. to Jerusalem

  473. to get approval

  474. from the apostolic headquarters

  475. or to be sent out

  476. by them.

  477. Or to use a modern day

  478. analogy,

  479. they are not sent to Rome

  480. to get

  481. to papal headquarters.

  482. They are not sent

  483. to Louisville

  484. to get denominational

  485. headquarters.

  486. No,

  487. it's the local church

  488. that sends them.

  489. Two,

  490. the gifts of the Spirit

  491. were functioning

  492. in this local church.

  493. There were prophets

  494. and teachers among them,

  495. though this verse

  496. doesn't mention

  497. all of the five-fold

  498. ministries listed

  499. in Ephesians 4.11,

  500. the apostles,

  501. the prophets,

  502. the evangelists,

  503. the teachers,

  504. and the pastors.

  505. We can tell

  506. from chapters 12 and 13

  507. that in fact

  508. all of those gifts

  509. were functioning

  510. in this church

  511. at Antioch.

  512. And prophets

  513. and teachers

  514. are explicitly mentioned

  515. as serving in the church.

  516. Prophets receive

  517. and communicate

  518. what God reveals to them,

  519. what the Holy Spirit

  520. wants of them

  521. to a specific group

  522. of people

  523. at a particular time.

  524. That's what prophets do.

  525. Teachers,

  526. on the other hand,

  527. expound and proclaim

  528. the timeless Word of God,

  529. stuarting the apostolic

  530. deposit of the Gospel,

  531. which is for all people

  532. at all times.

  533. And these two gifts

  534. complement each other.

  535. Both are necessary.

  536. Prophets ensure

  537. that the church

  538. is open

  539. to new insights

  540. and initiatives

  541. of the Holy Spirit.

  542. Teachers ensure

  543. that the church

  544. is always grounded

  545. in the unchanging,

  546. universal,

  547. and authoritative

  548. Word of God.

  549. This doesn't necessarily

  550. imply that prophets

  551. and teachers

  552. are different people.

  553. It seems here

  554. that Peter,

  555. Paul,

  556. and Barnabas

  557. all functioned

  558. both as prophets

  559. and teachers

  560. and apostles,

  561. in fact.

  562. And the important

  563. takeaway is that

  564. all of these gifts

  565. were functioning

  566. within this local church.

  567. Third,

  568. we see that this church

  569. was not defined

  570. by ethnicity,

  571. race,

  572. or socioeconomic class,

  573. but by their common

  574. commitment

  575. to the Lord Jesus.

  576. Christians.

  577. We know this

  578. because verse 1

  579. gives us a portrait

  580. of a very diverse church.

  581. We already know

  582. Barnabas and Saul

  583. pretty well.

  584. That's why Luke

  585. doesn't give us

  586. another introduction

  587. of who they are.

  588. And Barnabas

  589. was a Jew

  590. from the tribe

  591. of Levi.

  592. He was originally

  593. a native of Cyprus,

  594. but he had most recently

  595. lived in Jerusalem,

  596. which is where we first

  597. encountered him

  598. in Acts 4.

  599. Saul,

  600. as we know,

  601. is a Jew

  602. of the tribe

  603. of Benjamin,

  604. named after King Saul.

  605. He was from Tarsus.

  606. And then in this church

  607. also there was

  608. Simeon who was called

  609. Niger,

  610. and the word Niger

  611. means dark complexion

  612. or black.

  613. So Simeon

  614. may have had

  615. African origin.

  616. Lucius of Cyrene

  617. is also mentioned,

  618. and Cyrene

  619. was in North Africa.

  620. And lastly,

  621. Manan,

  622. a lifelong friend

  623. of Herod the Tetrarch.

  624. Herod the Tetrarch

  625. is not Herod Agrippa

  626. that just killed

  627. Apostle James

  628. in the previous chapter.

  629. This is Herod Antipas

  630. who is the one

  631. ruling at the time

  632. of Jesus' ministry

  633. that you see

  634. throughout the Gospels.

  635. And this man

  636. was a lifelong friend

  637. of Herod the Tetrarch,

  638. which means

  639. he was likely

  640. a member

  641. of the nobility

  642. with access

  643. to the royal court,

  644. a very prominent

  645. member of society,

  646. a high-ranking

  647. socioeconomic class.

  648. All of these men

  649. had diverse

  650. racial,

  651. ethnic,

  652. and socioeconomic

  653. backgrounds,

  654. but those things

  655. were not brought

  656. together.

  657. They were not brought

  658. together by common

  659. interests

  660. or common hobbies

  661. other than

  662. their common

  663. commitment

  664. to the Lord Jesus.

  665. Four,

  666. this was a local church

  667. that regularly

  668. prayed and fasted.

  669. Note that the

  670. prophetic revelations

  671. of the Holy Spirit

  672. in verse 2

  673. is bracketed by

  674. mentions of prayer

  675. and fasting.

  676. Verse 2,

  677. the Holy Spirit

  678. spoke to them

  679. while they were

  680. worshiping the Lord

  681. and fasting.

  682. And then verse 4,

  683. after prayer and fasting,

  684. they laid their hands

  685. on them and sent

  686. them off.

  687. To pray is to speak

  688. with God in the context

  689. of our relationship

  690. with Him.

  691. To fast is to

  692. abstain from food

  693. and drinks

  694. and sometimes

  695. other things

  696. that ordinarily

  697. occupy our time

  698. in order to give

  699. ourselves more fully

  700. to prayer,

  701. to discern God's will.

  702. It's our way

  703. of declaring

  704. that we need God.

  705. We need the bread

  706. of God more

  707. than even food

  708. to sustain us.

  709. This church

  710. was attentive

  711. to God,

  712. was receptive

  713. to the voice

  714. of the Holy Spirit

  715. because they

  716. prayed and fasted.

  717. And it's this

  718. prayerful,

  719. Christ-united,

  720. Spirit-empowered

  721. local church

  722. that set apart

  723. Barnabas

  724. and saw

  725. for this

  726. particular

  727. missionary work

  728. that the Spirit

  729. of God

  730. had called them to.

  731. After fasting

  732. and praying,

  733. it says in verse 3

  734. that they lay

  735. their hands on them

  736. and sent them off.

  737. In the book of Acts,

  738. the laying on of hands

  739. often is associated

  740. with the impartation

  741. of the Holy Spirit's power.

  742. It is probably

  743. for that reason

  744. that the church

  745. in Antioch

  746. lays their hands

  747. on them in this moment

  748. and sends them off.

  749. Just like in Acts

    Acts 6:6

  750. chapter 6,

  751. verse 6,

  752. when the 12 apostles

  753. appointed the seven

  754. to take charge

  755. of the distribution

  756. of food to widows,

  757. they lay their hands

  758. on them to authorize

  759. their role

  760. in the church.

  761. So this shows

  762. that the church

  763. in Antioch

  764. is officially

  765. commissioning

  766. Saul and Barnabas

  767. for and publicly

  768. recognizing

  769. their role

  770. as missionaries

  771. being sent off.

  772. And they're investing

  773. in them

  774. with the authority

  775. that they need

  776. to discharge

  777. their duties.

  778. And this is why

  779. it's only after

  780. this official commissioning

  781. by the church

  782. at Antioch

  783. that Barnabas

  784. starts being called

  785. an apostle.

  786. In Acts 14,

    Acts 14:14

  787. verse 14,

  788. he is called

  789. an apostle.

  790. The word apostle

  791. comes from

  792. the Greek word

  793. apostello.

  794. Sounds similar,

  795. which means

  796. to send.

  797. And that's very similar

  798. to a word

  799. that we often use,

  800. maybe more often use,

  801. the word missionary,

  802. which comes from

  803. the Latin word

  804. missio.

  805. They mean the same thing.

  806. They both mean

  807. someone who is sent out.

  808. And though

  809. it's the,

  810. I prefer to use

  811. the term missionary

  812. in our context

  813. because using the term

  814. apostle can cause

  815. confusion

  816. because people

  817. can confuse

  818. someone who is

  819. called an apostle

  820. with the twelve

  821. or with other

  822. foundational apostles

  823. who are commissioned

  824. directly by the risen

  825. Lord himself,

  826. which none of the

  827. apostles or missionaries

  828. nowadays are like that.

  829. However,

  830. there are

  831. modern day

  832. lowercase a

  833. apostles

  834. who are missionaries

  835. sent out to proclaim

  836. or assist

  837. in the proclamation

  838. of the gospel,

  839. the good news

  840. of Jesus Christ.

  841. I add the phrase

  842. to proclaim

  843. or to assist

  844. in the proclamation

  845. of the gospel

  846. because that's

  847. what some missionaries

  848. in fact do.

  849. For example,

  850. my friend

  851. Joyce Lynn

  852. who was a seminary

  853. friend of mine

  854. was a pilot

  855. with Mission

  856. Aviation Fellowship.

  857. She flew planes

  858. to remote villages

  859. that are parts

  860. of the world

  861. that are difficult

  862. to access

  863. to supply missionaries

  864. who are proclaiming

  865. the gospel.

  866. She died in May

  867. 2020 last year

  868. while transporting

  869. food

  870. and COVID

  871. rapid test kits

  872. and school supplies

  873. to a village

  874. in Papua

  875. because her

  876. plane crashed.

  877. She wasn't

  878. the primary

  879. evangelist

  880. or teacher

  881. but she was

  882. a missionary.

  883. She was called

  884. the missionary pilot.

  885. She was sent out

  886. by the church

  887. to discharge her duties.

  888. This is very similar

  889. to the way

  890. Epaphroditus

  891. is called

  892. an apostle

  893. in Philippians 2.25.

  894. Epaphroditus

  895. was not a traditional

  896. preaching missionary

  897. whether he was

  898. sent out

  899. by the Philippian church

  900. to minister

  901. to Paul

  902. and his temporal needs

  903. because Paul

  904. was a preaching

  905. missionary.

  906. but Epaphroditus

  907. was an authorized

  908. representative

  909. of the Philippian church

  910. who delivered

  911. to Paul

  912. their letter

  913. and the supplies

  914. a care package

  915. for him

  916. while he was

  917. in prison.

  918. And so

  919. because of that

  920. role

  921. the ESV

  922. translates

  923. the word

  924. apostle

  925. as messenger.

  926. He calls

  927. Epaphroditus

  928. a messenger

  929. but it's the

  930. exact same word

  931. that is used

  932. throughout

  933. the New Testament

  934. it's the apostle.

  935. So missionaries

  936. are those

  937. who proclaim

  938. the gospel

  939. who are sent

  940. out by the church

  941. to proclaim

  942. the gospel

  943. to assist

  944. in the proclamation

  945. of the gospel.

  946. So because of that

  947. by definition

  948. being an apostle

  949. or being a missionary

  950. involves

  951. a kind of travel.

  952. It entails

  953. a change

  954. in geographic

  955. locale.

  956. Verses 4 to 5

  957. tell us that

  958. Paul and Barnabas

  959. assisted by John

  960. traveled 16 miles

  961. to Seleucia

  962. where they got

  963. on a ship

  964. to sail

  965. 62 miles

  966. to Cyprus

  967. and then

  968. arrived at

  969. Salamis

  970. and then

  971. later

  972. they traveled

  973. to Paphas

  974. which is

  975. another

  976. 112 miles

  977. away from

  978. Salamis.

  979. All that to say

  980. it is the church's

  981. role to set

  982. apart missionaries

  983. and send them

  984. out from

  985. their congregation.

  986. I'm focusing

  987. on this

  988. because we

  989. as a church

  990. are walking

  991. through this

  992. right now.

  993. We're trying

  994. to learn

  995. about how

  996. we can send

  997. out missionaries

  998. from our midst.

  999. And I think

  1000. setting apart

  1001. missionaries

  1002. as a local

  1003. church

  1004. at the very

  1005. least involves

  1006. assessing

  1007. and affirming

  1008. their missionary

  1009. call

  1010. and in preparing

  1011. and dedicating

  1012. them for that

  1013. call.

  1014. Remember that

  1015. the Holy Spirit

  1016. commanded the church

  1017. to set apart

  1018. the missionaries.

  1019. Assessment

  1020. is necessary

  1021. because some

  1022. people romanticize

  1023. traveling to

  1024. exotic places

  1025. as missionaries

  1026. without understanding

  1027. the price

  1028. and the persecution

  1029. that missions

  1030. work entails.

  1031. the church

  1032. needs to

  1033. ensure

  1034. that

  1035. what

  1036. motivates

  1037. these

  1038. missionaries

  1039. are God's

  1040. call

  1041. and not

  1042. their own

  1043. fancy.

  1044. The church

  1045. needs to

  1046. make sure

  1047. that they

  1048. are suited

  1049. for the

  1050. task

  1051. that they

  1052. are being

  1053. sent out

  1054. for.

  1055. If they're

  1056. going to

  1057. be primary

  1058. teachers

  1059. then they

  1060. better be

  1061. scripturally

  1062. competent

  1063. and theologically

  1064. equipped.

  1065. They better

  1066. have a strong

  1067. personal walk

  1068. with Jesus.

  1069. Robust

  1070. spiritual

  1071. disciplines

  1072. because

  1073. switching

  1074. your locale

  1075. doesn't

  1076. automatically

  1077. make you

  1078. a more

  1079. devout

  1080. Christian.

  1081. A Christian

  1082. that does

  1083. not read

  1084. his or her

  1085. Bible

  1086. or pray

  1087. here at

  1088. home

  1089. is not

  1090. all of a

  1091. sudden

  1092. going to

  1093. start

  1094. doing that

  1095. just because

  1096. they were

  1097. sent out

  1098. abroad.

  1099. Note that

  1100. Barnabas and

  1101. Saul have

  1102. already proven

  1103. their worth

  1104. by this time.

  1105. Barnabas had

  1106. a proven

  1107. record of

  1108. proclaiming

  1109. the Lord

  1110. Jesus.

  1111. He was

  1112. already

  1113. recognized

  1114. by the

  1115. apostles

  1116. for his

  1117. godliness

  1118. in chapter

  1119. 4.

  1120. In Acts

    Acts 11:24

  1121. 11

  1122. verse 24

  1123. he described

  1124. Barnabas as

  1125. a good

  1126. man full

  1127. of the

  1128. Holy Spirit

  1129. and of

  1130. faith.

  1131. And that's

  1132. why the

  1133. Jerusalem

  1134. church sent

  1135. him out

  1136. in the

  1137. first place

  1138. to Antioch

  1139. to minister

  1140. to the

  1141. new

  1142. converts

  1143. there.

  1144. Similarly

  1145. after his

  1146. conversion

  1147. Saul

  1148. it says

  1149. in Acts

  1150. 9

  1151. 19

  1152. to 20

  1153. for some

  1154. days

  1155. was with

  1156. the

  1157. disciples

  1158. at

  1159. Damascus

  1160. and

  1161. immediately

  1162. proclaimed

  1163. Jesus

  1164. in the

  1165. synagogue.

  1166. Saul

  1167. loses

  1168. no time

  1169. he knows

  1170. that he

  1171. is called

  1172. to proclaim

  1173. the gospel

  1174. and right

  1175. there where

  1176. he was

  1177. in Damascus

  1178. where he

  1179. was converted

  1180. he starts

  1181. proclaiming

  1182. the Lord

  1183. Jesus

  1184. and then

  1185. he does

  1186. this in

  1187. Arabia

  1188. according to

  1189. Galatians

  1190. 1

  1191. 16

  1192. to 18

  1193. and then

  1194. he goes

  1195. to Jerusalem

  1196. to do

  1197. the same

  1198. thing

  1199. in Acts

  1200. 9

  1201. 26

  1202. to 29

  1203. and then

  1204. presumably

  1205. he's doing

  1206. the same

  1207. thing

  1208. in Tarsus

  1209. which is

  1210. where

  1211. Barnabas

  1212. finds

  1213. him

  1214. and recruits

  1215. him

  1216. for

  1217. this

  1218. ministry

  1219. work

  1220. in

  1221. Antioch

  1222. they're

  1223. not

  1224. sending

  1225. there's

  1226. I mean

  1227. there's

  1228. no

  1229. expendable

  1230. member

  1231. in the

  1232. church

  1233. but

  1234. to use

  1235. the term

  1236. today

  1237. they're

  1238. not

  1239. sending

  1240. expendable

  1241. people

  1242. they're

  1243. not

  1244. they're

  1245. sending

  1246. their

  1247. very

  1248. best

  1249. the most

  1250. faithful

  1251. men and

  1252. women

  1253. that's

  1254. what

  1255. the

  1256. church

  1257. should

  1258. do

  1259. it

  1260. appears

  1261. to me

  1262. that

  1263. God

  1264. has

  1265. called

  1266. some

  1267. of

  1268. us

  1269. as

  1270. missionaries

  1271. and that

  1272. means

  1273. in the

  1274. coming

  1275. months

  1276. and years

  1277. we will

  1278. have

  1279. to do

  1280. the

  1281. hard

  1282. work

  1283. of

  1284. setting

  1285. them

  1286. apart

  1287. and

  1288. sending

  1289. them

  1290. off

  1291. to

  1292. set

  1293. apart

  1294. for

  1295. missionary

  1296. work

  1297. necessarily

  1298. means

  1299. that

  1300. we

  1301. may

  1302. not

  1303. use

  1304. them

  1305. for

  1306. other

  1307. work

  1308. it

  1309. means

  1310. that

  1311. we

  1312. lose

  1313. them

  1314. at

  1315. least

  1316. for

  1317. a

  1318. time

  1319. from

  1320. our

  1321. local

  1322. congregation

  1323. it

  1324. means

  1325. we

  1326. will

  1327. miss

  1328. their

  1329. contribution

  1330. to

  1331. our

  1332. church

  1333. we

  1334. will

  1335. miss

  1336. their

  1337. personality

  1338. their

  1339. character

  1340. their

  1341. gifts

  1342. but

  1343. that

  1344. hard

  1345. work

  1346. is

  1347. necessary

  1348. because

  1349. there

  1350. are

  1351. people

  1352. in

  1353. the

  1354. world

  1355. who

  1356. have

  1357. not

  1358. heard

  1359. the

  1360. gospel

  1361. of

  1362. Jesus

  1363. Christ

  1364. and

  1365. our

  1366. Lord

  1367. Jesus

  1368. has

  1369. commanded

  1370. us

  1371. to

  1372. go

  1373. to

  1374. the

  1375. end

  1376. of

  1377. the

  1378. earth

  1379. in

  1380. 3

  1381. John

  1382. 5

  1383. to

  1384. 8

  1385. apostle

  1386. John

  1387. commends

  1388. believers

  1389. who

  1390. are

  1391. actually

  1392. supporting

  1393. these

  1394. missionaries

  1395. who are

  1396. visiting

  1397. them

  1398. and then

  1399. sending

  1400. them

  1401. off

  1402. and he

  1403. says

  1404. this

  1405. you

  1406. will

  1407. do

  1408. well

  1409. to

  1410. send

  1411. them

  1412. on

  1413. their

  1414. journey

  1415. in

  1416. a

  1417. manner

  1418. worthy

  1419. of

  1420. God

  1421. for

  1422. they

  1423. have

  1424. gone

  1425. out

  1426. for

  1427. the

  1428. sake

  1429. of

  1430. the

  1431. name

  1432. accepting

  1433. nothing

  1434. from

  1435. the

  1436. Gentiles

  1437. therefore

  1438. we

  1439. ought

  1440. to

  1441. support

  1442. people

  1443. like

  1444. workers

  1445. for

  1446. the

  1447. truth

  1448. John

  1449. is

  1450. saying

  1451. here

  1452. that

  1453. instead

  1454. of

  1455. expecting

  1456. missionaries

  1457. that we

  1458. send off

  1459. to be

  1460. supported

  1461. by the

  1462. people

  1463. that they

  1464. are

  1465. ministering

  1466. to

  1467. that

  1468. we

  1469. should

  1470. support

  1471. them

  1472. furnish

  1473. their

  1474. needs

  1475. pay

  1476. their

  1477. expenses

  1478. because

  1479. missionaries

  1480. are

  1481. ministering

  1482. and

  1483. they're

  1484. usually

  1485. going

  1486. to

  1487. areas

  1488. where

  1489. there

  1490. are

  1491. not

  1492. other

  1493. established

  1494. churches

  1495. and

  1496. that's

  1497. why

  1498. missionary

  1499. work

  1500. is often

  1501. a

  1502. lonely

  1503. work

  1504. that's

  1505. why

  1506. in the

  1507. early

  1508. church

  1509. their

  1510. mode of

  1511. operation

  1512. is always

  1513. to send

  1514. out

  1515. teams

  1516. in this

  1517. case

  1518. Barnabas

  1519. Saul

  1520. and

  1521. John

  1522. Mark

  1523. who

  1524. is

  1525. assisting

  1526. them

  1527. so that

  1528. missionaries

  1529. go as

  1530. extensions

  1531. of

  1532. the

  1533. sending

  1534. church

  1535. assuming

  1536. that

  1537. they're

  1538. not

  1539. joining

  1540. an

  1541. existing

  1542. church

  1543. where

  1544. they're

  1545. going

  1546. and

  1547. they

  1548. will

  1549. need

  1550. the

  1551. church's

  1552. financial

  1553. support

  1554. emotional

  1555. support

  1556. spiritual

  1557. support

  1558. they need

  1559. the

  1560. church's

  1561. prayer

  1562. isn't

  1563. it amazing

  1564. 3 John

  1565. 5 says

  1566. we ought

  1567. to send

  1568. them off

  1569. in a

  1570. manner

  1571. worthy

  1572. of

  1573. God

  1574. what a

  1575. call

  1576. we ought

  1577. to give

  1578. them a

  1579. send off

  1580. worthy

  1581. of

  1582. God

  1583. why

  1584. because

  1585. they are

  1586. God's

  1587. workers

  1588. because

  1589. the

  1590. Holy

  1591. Spirit

  1592. called

  1593. them

  1594. because

  1595. they are

  1596. Christ's

  1597. representatives

  1598. because

  1599. remember

  1600. that's

  1601. the Lord

  1602. that they

  1603. serve

  1604. that's

  1605. the Lord

  1606. that they

  1607. represent

  1608. if we

  1609. were hosting

  1610. and sending

  1611. off

  1612. the king

  1613. himself

  1614. would we

  1615. be sparing

  1616. in our

  1617. expenses

  1618. would we

  1619. treat him

  1620. like a

  1621. beggar

  1622. we must

  1623. not shirk

  1624. our

  1625. responsibility

  1626. as a

  1627. church

  1628. to set

  1629. apart

  1630. and send

  1631. missionaries

  1632. because

  1633. churches

  1634. have

  1635. sometimes

  1636. not done

  1637. this

  1638. sometimes

  1639. missionaries

  1640. are not

  1641. sent

  1642. they

  1643. just

  1644. go

  1645. but

  1646. that's

  1647. not

  1648. the way

  1649. it

  1650. should

  1651. be

  1652. it's

  1653. the

  1654. church's

  1655. responsibility

  1656. to set

  1657. apart

  1658. the

  1659. missionaries

  1660. for the

  1661. service

  1662. of

  1663. God

  1664. third

  1665. a

  1666. missionary

  1667. that is

  1668. sent

  1669. by

  1670. God

  1671. and

  1672. set

  1673. apart

  1674. by

  1675. the

  1676. church

  1677. will

  1678. undoubtedly

  1679. be

  1680. opposed

  1681. by

  1682. the

  1683. devil

  1684. that's

  1685. my

  1686. third

  1687. point

  1688. please

  1689. follow

  1690. along

  1691. as I

  1692. read

  1693. verses

  1694. 6

  1695. to

  1696. 8

  1697. when

  1698. they

  1699. had

  1700. gone

  1701. through

  1702. the

  1703. whole

  1704. island

  1705. as far

  1706. as

  1707. pathos

  1708. they

  1709. came

  1710. upon

  1711. a

  1712. certain

  1713. magician

  1714. a

  1715. Jewish

  1716. false

  1717. prophet

  1718. named

  1719. Bar

  1720. Jesus

  1721. he

  1722. was

  1723. with

  1724. the

  1725. proconsul

  1726. Sergius

  1727. Paulus

  1728. a man

  1729. of

  1730. intelligence

  1731. who

  1732. summoned

  1733. Barnabas

  1734. and

  1735. Saul

  1736. and

  1737. sought

  1738. to

  1739. hear

  1740. the

  1741. word

  1742. of

  1743. God

  1744. but

  1745. Elemus

  1746. the

  1747. magician

  1748. for that

  1749. is

  1750. the

  1751. meaning

  1752. of

  1753. his

  1754. name

  1755. opposed

  1756. them

  1757. seeking

  1758. to

  1759. turn

  1760. the

  1761. proconsul

  1762. away

  1763. from

  1764. the

  1765. faith

  1766. just

  1767. as

  1768. Peter

  1769. confronted

  1770. Simon

  1771. the

  1772. magician

  1773. in

  1774. chapter

  1775. 8

  1776. Barnabas

  1777. and

  1778. Saul

  1779. encounter

  1780. Elemus

  1781. the

  1782. magician

  1783. here

  1784. in

  1785. chapter

  1786. 13

  1787. like

  1788. Simon

  1789. Elemus

  1790. was

  1791. not

  1792. a

  1793. magician

  1794. in

  1795. the

  1796. sense

  1797. of

  1798. someone

  1799. who

  1800. uses

  1801. sleight

  1802. of

  1803. hand

  1804. or

  1805. illusions

  1806. to

  1807. entertain

  1808. people

  1809. like

  1810. Daniel

  1811. that's

  1812. totally

  1813. fine

  1814. activity

  1815. Simon

  1816. the

  1817. magician

  1818. and

  1819. Elemus

  1820. the

  1821. magician

  1822. are

  1823. sorcerers

  1824. they're

  1825. men

  1826. who

  1827. practice

  1828. witchcraft

  1829. they're

  1830. people

  1831. who

  1832. are

  1833. associated

  1834. with

  1835. the

  1836. occult

  1837. who

  1838. traverse

  1839. in

  1840. the

  1841. realm

  1842. of

  1843. evil

  1844. spirits

  1845. and

  1846. demons

  1847. who

  1848. call

  1849. down

  1850. curses

  1851. on

  1852. people

  1853. who

  1854. use

  1855. incantations

  1856. and

  1857. he

  1858. is

  1859. described

  1860. here

  1861. as

  1862. a

  1863. Jewish

  1864. false

  1865. prophet

  1866. named

  1867. Bar

  1868. Jesus

  1869. he

  1870. was

  1871. a

  1872. Jew

  1873. but

  1874. evidently

  1875. not

  1876. a

  1877. faithful

  1878. Jew

  1879. because

  1880. he

  1881. is

  1882. described

  1883. as

  1884. a

  1885. false

  1886. prophet

  1887. unlike

  1888. the

  1889. true

  1890. prophets

  1891. of

  1892. the

  1893. Lord

  1894. in

  1895. the

  1896. church

  1897. at

  1898. Antioch

  1899. who

  1900. received

  1901. the

  1902. command

  1903. of

  1904. the

  1905. Holy

  1906. Spirit

  1907. this

  1908. Elemus

  1909. is

  1910. a

  1911. false

  1912. prophet

  1913. who

  1914. opposes

  1915. the

  1916. voice

  1917. of the

  1918. Spirit

  1919. the

  1920. Word

  1921. of

  1922. God

  1923. Elemus

  1924. was

  1925. with

  1926. the

  1927. proconsul

  1928. it says

  1929. which

  1930. implies

  1931. that he

  1932. served

  1933. as an

  1934. advisor

  1935. a

  1936. of

  1937. the

  1938. Roman

  1939. province

  1940. was

  1941. appointed

  1942. by

  1943. the

  1944. Roman

  1945. senate

  1946. and

  1947. the

  1948. proconsul

  1949. himself

  1950. was

  1951. interested

  1952. in what

  1953. Saul and

  1954. Barnabas

  1955. were

  1956. proclaiming

  1957. all

  1958. throughout

  1959. the

  1960. region

  1961. however

  1962. Elemus

  1963. the

  1964. magician

  1965. opposed

  1966. them

  1967. he

  1968. was

  1969. contradicting

  1970. what they

  1971. were saying

  1972. he

  1973. was

  1974. undermining

  1975. what

  1976. they

  1977. were

  1978. saying

  1979. he

  1980. was

  1981. trying

  1982. to

  1983. discredit

  1984. Saul

  1985. and

  1986. Barnabas

  1987. they

  1988. stood

  1989. in

  1990. the

  1991. way

  1992. and

  1993. he

  1994. tried

  1995. actively

  1996. to

  1997. turn

  1998. the

  1999. proconsul

  2000. away

  2001. from

  2002. the

  2003. faith

  2004. I

  2005. wonder

  2006. why

  2007. I

  2008. mean

  2009. obviously

  2010. he

  2011. is

  2012. the

  2013. representative

  2014. of

  2015. the

  2016. devil

  2017. that's

  2018. why

  2019. he's

  2020. called

  2021. the

  2022. son

  2023. of

  2024. the

  2025. devil

  2026. but

  2027. probably

  2028. also

  2029. because

  2030. the

  2031. limousine

  2032. magician

  2033. was

  2034. well

  2035. aware

  2036. that

  2037. if

  2038. the

  2039. proconsul

  2040. were

  2041. to

  2042. come

  2043. to

  2044. faith

  2045. in

  2046. the

  2047. Lord

  2048. Jesus

  2049. and

  2050. to

  2051. pledge

  2052. allegiance

  2053. to

  2054. him

  2055. that

  2056. would

  2057. be

  2058. the

  2059. end

  2060. of

  2061. his

  2062. career

  2063. this

  2064. is

  2065. a

  2066. good

  2067. reminder

  2068. of

  2069. the

  2070. fact

  2071. that

  2072. the

  2073. gospel

  2074. of

  2075. Jesus

  2076. is

  2077. disruptive

  2078. it

  2079. disrupts

  2080. families

  2081. Christians

  2082. in other

  2083. cultures

  2084. are often

  2085. disowned

  2086. by their

  2087. own

  2088. family

  2089. members

  2090. after

  2091. their

  2092. conversion

  2093. it

  2094. disrupts

  2095. careers

  2096. witches

  2097. and

  2098. sorcerers

  2099. lose

  2100. their

  2101. jobs

  2102. imams

  2103. and

  2104. Buddhist

  2105. monks

  2106. and

  2107. Hindu

  2108. gurus

  2109. and

  2110. atheist

  2111. philosophers

  2112. lose

  2113. their

  2114. credibility

  2115. people

  2116. who

  2117. make

  2118. and

  2119. sell

  2120. idols

  2121. pendants

  2122. talismans

  2123. lose

  2124. their

  2125. profit

  2126. it's

  2127. no

  2128. wonder

  2129. then

  2130. that

  2131. missionaries

  2132. are

  2133. opposed

  2134. missionaries

  2135. are making

  2136. forays

  2137. into

  2138. enemy

  2139. territory

  2140. the

  2141. spiritual

  2142. forces

  2143. of

  2144. evil

  2145. will

  2146. oppose

  2147. them

  2148. that

  2149. is

  2150. guaranteed

  2151. we

  2152. should

  2153. be

  2154. prepared

  2155. for

  2156. it

  2157. we

  2158. should

  2159. prepare

  2160. the

  2161. missionaries

  2162. that we

  2163. set

  2164. apart

  2165. in

  2166. sand

  2167. for

  2168. it

  2169. we

  2170. should

  2171. pray

  2172. for

  2173. them

  2174. for

  2175. God's

  2176. protection

  2177. over

  2178. them

  2179. that

  2180. they

  2181. might

  2182. be

  2183. fortified

  2184. with

  2185. the

  2186. armor

  2187. of

  2188. God

  2189. in

  2190. order

  2191. to

  2192. counter

  2193. Satan

  2194. and the

  2195. evil

  2196. spirits

  2197. under

  2198. his

  2199. command

  2200. we

  2201. must

  2202. be

  2203. filled

  2204. with

  2205. the

  2206. Holy

  2207. Spirit

  2208. that's

  2209. my

  2210. fourth

  2211. point

  2212. it

  2213. says

  2214. in

  2215. verses

  2216. 9

  2217. to

  2218. 11

  2219. but

  2220. Saul

  2221. was

  2222. also

  2223. called

  2224. Paul

  2225. filled

  2226. with

  2227. the

  2228. Holy

  2229. Spirit

  2230. looked

  2231. intently

  2232. at

  2233. him

  2234. and

  2235. said

  2236. you

  2237. son

  2238. of

  2239. the

  2240. devil

  2241. you

  2242. enemy

  2243. of

  2244. all

  2245. righteousness

  2246. full

  2247. of

  2248. all

  2249. deceit

  2250. and

  2251. villainy

  2252. will

  2253. you

  2254. not

  2255. stop

  2256. making

  2257. crooked

  2258. the

  2259. straight

  2260. path

  2261. of

  2262. the

  2263. Lord

  2264. and

  2265. now

  2266. behold

  2267. the

  2268. hand

  2269. of

  2270. the

  2271. Lord

  2272. is

  2273. upon

  2274. you

  2275. and

  2276. you

  2277. will

  2278. be

  2279. blind

  2280. and

  2281. unable

  2282. to

  2283. see

  2284. the

  2285. sun

  2286. for

  2287. a

  2288. time

  2289. immediately

  2290. missed

  2291. the

  2292. darkness

  2293. fell

  2294. upon him

  2295. and he

  2296. went

  2297. about

  2298. seeking

  2299. people

  2300. to

  2301. lead

  2302. him

  2303. by

  2304. the

  2305. hand

  2306. these

  2307. verses

  2308. are

  2309. full

  2310. of

  2311. ironic

  2312. contrasts

  2313. Elimas

  2314. Aramaic

  2315. name

  2316. is

  2317. Bar

  2318. Jesus

  2319. which

  2320. means

  2321. son

  2322. of

  2323. Jesus

  2324. and

  2325. Jesus

  2326. means

  2327. Yehovah

  2328. is

  2329. savior

  2330. but

  2331. instead

  2332. Saul

  2333. calls

  2334. him

  2335. you

  2336. son

  2337. of

  2338. the

  2339. devil

  2340. Bar

  2341. Jesus

  2342. true

  2343. allegiance

  2344. is

  2345. not

  2346. the

  2347. Lord

  2348. but

  2349. the

  2350. devil

  2351. he

  2352. is

  2353. not

  2354. the

  2355. son

  2356. of

  2357. Jesus

  2358. he

  2359. does

  2360. not

  2361. resemble

  2362. Jesus

  2363. he

  2364. is

  2365. a

  2366. son

  2367. of

  2368. the

  2369. devil

  2370. unlike

  2371. John

  2372. the

  2373. Baptist

  2374. who

  2375. made

  2376. straight

  2377. the

  2378. path

  2379. of

  2380. the

  2381. Lord

  2382. Elimas

  2383. makes

  2384. crooked

  2385. the

  2386. straight

  2387. paths

  2388. of

  2389. the

  2390. Lord

  2391. furthermore

  2392. Saul

  2393. he

  2394. says

  2395. is

  2396. filled

  2397. with

  2398. the

  2399. Holy

  2400. Spirit

  2401. but

  2402. that

  2403. contrasts

  2404. with

  2405. Elimas

  2406. who

  2407. is

  2408. full

  2409. of

  2410. all

  2411. deceit

  2412. and

  2413. villainy

  2414. and

  2415. therefore

  2416. Saul

  2417. pronounces

  2418. God's

  2419. judgment

  2420. of

  2421. Elimas

  2422. and

  2423. he

  2424. struck

  2425. with

  2426. temporary

  2427. blindness

  2428. unable

  2429. to

  2430. see

  2431. the

  2432. sun

  2433. for

  2434. a

  2435. time

  2436. and

  2437. darkness

  2438. fell

  2439. upon

  2440. him

  2441. and

  2442. that's

  2443. ironic

  2444. also

  2445. because

  2446. according to

  2447. the eastern

  2448. bible dictionary

  2449. Elimas

  2450. the name

  2451. is derived

  2452. from the

  2453. arabic word

  2454. Elim

  2455. which means

  2456. aware

  2457. or knowing

  2458. Elimas

  2459. his name

  2460. indicates that

  2461. he knows

  2462. and sees

  2463. things that

  2464. other people

  2465. do not

  2466. he's the

  2467. magician

  2468. but here

  2469. he is

  2470. punished

  2471. with

  2472. blindness

  2473. becoming

  2474. unaware

  2475. of even

  2476. his immediate

  2477. surroundings

  2478. not able

  2479. to see

  2480. what

  2481. other

  2482. people

  2483. see

  2484. and

  2485. note

  2486. that

  2487. Saul

  2488. doesn't

  2489. try to

  2490. out

  2491. debate

  2492. Elimas

  2493. he relies

  2494. on the

  2495. power

  2496. of the

  2497. Holy

  2498. Spirit

  2499. to

  2500. smite

  2501. him

  2502. and

  2503. he

  2504. knew

  2505. what

  2506. to

  2507. do

  2508. in

  2509. this

  2510. situation

  2511. because

  2512. he

  2513. was

  2514. filled

  2515. with

  2516. the

  2517. Holy

  2518. Spirit

  2519. he

  2520. was

  2521. attentive

  2522. to

  2523. the

  2524. promptings

  2525. of

  2526. the

  2527. Holy

  2528. Spirit

  2529. he

  2530. knew

  2531. he

  2532. was

  2533. familiar

  2534. with

  2535. the

  2536. voice

  2537. of

  2538. the

  2539. Spirit

  2540. only

  2541. those

  2542. who

  2543. are

  2544. full

  2545. of the

  2546. Spirit

  2547. can

  2548. become

  2549. those

  2550. who

  2551. are

  2552. full

  2553. of

  2554. deceit

  2555. and

  2556. villainy

  2557. it's

  2558. a bit

  2559. jarring

  2560. to see

  2561. the phrase

  2562. the hand

  2563. of the

  2564. Lord

  2565. is upon

  2566. you

  2567. here

  2568. to refer

  2569. to God's

  2570. judgment

  2571. of

  2572. Elimas

  2573. in

  2574. Luke

  2575. 1

  2576. 66

  2577. Luke

  2578. used

  2579. the

  2580. exact

  2581. same

  2582. phrase

  2583. to

  2584. refer

  2585. to

  2586. John

  2587. the

  2588. Baptist

  2589. saying

  2590. the

  2591. hand

  2592. of

  2593. the

  2594. Lord

  2595. was

  2596. with

  2597. him

  2598. and

  2599. Luke

  2600. also

  2601. used

  2602. that

  2603. same

  2604. language

  2605. in

  2606. Acts

  2607. 11

  2608. 21

  2609. to

  2610. say

  2611. that

  2612. the

  2613. hand

  2614. of

  2615. the

  2616. Lord

  2617. was

  2618. with

  2619. those

  2620. who

  2621. preached

  2622. the

  2623. Lord

  2624. Jesus

  2625. to

  2626. the

  2627. Hellenists

  2628. at

  2629. Antioch

  2630. the

  2631. only

  2632. difference

  2633. in the

  2634. expression

  2635. is

  2636. the

  2637. preposition

  2638. in

  2639. those

  2640. two

  2641. occasions

  2642. the

  2643. hand

  2644. of

  2645. the

  2646. Lord

  2647. was

  2648. with

  2649. them

  2650. but

  2651. here

  2652. the

  2653. hand

  2654. of

  2655. the

  2656. Lord

  2657. is

  2658. upon

  2659. Elimas

  2660. that's

  2661. a

  2662. fearful

  2663. thing

  2664. if

  2665. you

  2666. follow

  2667. the

  2668. Lord

  2669. you

  2670. are

  2671. going

  2672. with

  2673. the

  2674. spirit

  2675. of

  2676. the

  2677. Lord

  2678. then

  2679. the

  2680. hand

  2681. of

  2682. the

  2683. Lord

  2684. empowers

  2685. you

  2686. and

  2687. pushes

  2688. the

  2689. Lord

  2690. if

  2691. you

  2692. are

  2693. following

  2694. the

  2695. course

  2696. of

  2697. this

  2698. world

  2699. going

  2700. with

  2701. the

  2702. evil

  2703. spirit

  2704. then

  2705. the

  2706. hand

  2707. of

  2708. the

  2709. Lord

  2710. the

  2711. immovable

  2712. hand

  2713. of

  2714. the

  2715. Lord

  2716. stands

  2717. in

  2718. your

  2719. way

  2720. it's

  2721. kind of a

  2722. side

  2723. point

  2724. but note

  2725. here

  2726. also

  2727. that

  2728. when

  2729. Luke

  2730. that

  2731. this

  2732. is

  2733. where

  2734. Luke

  2735. starts

  2736. to

  2737. use

  2738. Saul's

  2739. Roman

  2740. name

  2741. Paul

  2742. to

  2743. refer

  2744. to

  2745. him

  2746. it

  2747. says

  2748. in

  2749. verse

  2750. 9

  2751. but

  2752. Saul

  2753. was

  2754. also

  2755. called

  2756. Paul

  2757. this

  2758. shows

  2759. that

  2760. Saul

  2761. did

  2762. not

  2763. change

  2764. his

  2765. name

  2766. to

  2767. Paul

  2768. he

  2769. just

  2770. had

  2771. multiple

  2772. names

  2773. he

  2774. had

  2775. his

  2776. Jewish

  2777. name

  2778. Saul

  2779. and

  2780. then

  2781. he

  2782. had

  2783. his

  2784. Roman

  2785. name

  2786. Paul

  2787. maybe

  2788. Luke

  2789. is

  2790. reflecting

  2791. Paul's

  2792. actual

  2793. practice

  2794. this

  2795. might

  2796. be

  2797. when

  2798. Paul

  2799. started

  2800. using

  2801. the

  2802. name

  2803. Paul

  2804. for

  2805. himself

  2806. in

  2807. all

  2808. of

  2809. his

  2810. letters

  2811. Paul

  2812. refers

  2813. to

  2814. himself

  2815. as

  2816. Paul

  2817. not

  2818. Saul

  2819. refusing

  2820. to

  2821. use

  2822. the

  2823. name

  2824. that

  2825. he

  2826. had

  2827. taken

  2828. from

  2829. the

  2830. first

  2831. Israelite

  2832. king

  2833. instead

  2834. taking

  2835. on

  2836. the

  2837. name

  2838. that

  2839. means

  2840. small

  2841. or

  2842. humble

  2843. a

  2844. Roman

  2845. name

  2846. that

  2847. his

  2848. Gentile

  2849. audience

  2850. that

  2851. he

  2852. was

  2853. ministering

  2854. to

  2855. would

  2856. relate

  2857. to

  2858. finally

  2859. missionaries

  2860. are

  2861. focused

  2862. on

  2863. the

  2864. word

  2865. Luke

  2866. ends

  2867. this

  2868. account

  2869. in

  2870. verse

  2871. 12

  2872. by

  2873. telling

  2874. us

  2875. that

  2876. then

  2877. the

  2878. proconsul

  2879. believed

  2880. when he

  2881. saw

  2882. what

  2883. had

  2884. occurred

  2885. for

  2886. he

  2887. was

  2888. astonished

  2889. at

  2890. the

  2891. teaching

  2892. of

  2893. the

  2894. Lord

  2895. this

  2896. is

  2897. a

  2898. similar

  2899. reaction

  2900. as

  2901. the

  2902. one

  2903. that

  2904. Jesus'

  2905. onlookers

  2906. had

  2907. in

  2908. Mark

  2909. 1

  2910. 27

  2911. and

  2912. 28

  2913. when

  2914. Jesus

  2915. was

  2916. teaching

  2917. it

  2918. says

  2919. that

  2920. they

  2921. were

  2922. amazed

  2923. so

  2924. that

  2925. they

  2926. questioned

  2927. among

  2928. themselves

  2929. saying

  2930. what

  2931. is

  2932. this

  2933. a

  2934. new

  2935. teaching

  2936. with

  2937. authority

  2938. he

  2939. commands

  2940. even

  2941. the

  2942. unclean

  2943. spirits

  2944. and

  2945. they

  2946. obey

  2947. him

  2948. in

  2949. a

  2950. similar

  2951. way

  2952. people

  2953. realize

  2954. that

  2955. that

  2956. when

  2957. what

  2958. Paul

  2959. was

  2960. preaching

  2961. was

  2962. not

  2963. just

  2964. a

  2965. mere

  2966. teaching

  2967. without

  2968. power

  2969. and

  2970. authority

  2971. but

  2972. that

  2973. it

  2974. was

  2975. a

  2976. teaching

  2977. that

  2978. had

  2979. authority

  2980. and

  2981. power

  2982. and

  2983. he

  2984. was

  2985. astonished

  2986. by it

  2987. when

  2988. he

  2989. saw

  2990. how

  2991. Elemus

  2992. was

  2993. struck

  2994. with

  2995. blindness

  2996. these

  2997. miraculous

  2998. signs

  2999. and

  3000. wonders

  3001. serve

  3002. to

  3003. authenticate

  3004. the

  3005. gospel

  3006. message

  3007. and

  3008. that

  3009. relationship

  3010. is

  3011. important

  3012. God

  3013. does

  3014. not

  3015. perform

  3016. signs

  3017. and

  3018. wonders

  3019. through

  3020. his

  3021. people

  3022. just

  3023. to

  3024. show

  3025. off

  3026. or

  3027. to

  3028. entertain

  3029. people

  3030. in

  3031. scripture

  3032. the

  3033. signs

  3034. always

  3096. that is

  3097. the power

  3098. of God

  3099. for salvation

  3100. to everyone

  3101. who believes

  3102. this is

  3103. why

  3104. missionaries

  3105. are either

  3106. proclaiming

  3107. the word

  3108. or assisting

  3109. or enabling

  3110. the proclamation

  3111. of the word

  3112. note this

  3113. emphasis

  3114. throughout the

  3115. passage

  3116. what did

  3117. Paul and

  3118. Barnabas do

  3119. when they

  3120. arrived at

  3121. Salamis

  3122. in verse

  3123. 5

  3124. they

  3125. proclaim

  3126. the word

  3127. of God

  3128. why did

  3131. summon

  3132. Saul and

  3133. Barnabas

  3134. to come

  3135. to him

  3136. he says

  3137. in verse

  3138. 7

  3139. to hear

  3140. the word

  3141. of God

  3142. this is

  3143. what our

  3144. life and

  3145. ministry

  3146. should be

  3147. about

  3148. Jesus

  3149. is the

  3150. son of

  3151. God

  3152. and son

  3153. of man

  3154. who lived

  3155. the perfect

  3156. life of

  3157. righteousness

  3158. and yet

  3159. he died

  3160. the death

  3161. of sinners

  3162. on the cross

  3163. and he was

  3164. raised from

  3165. the dead

  3166. to give

  3167. us

  3168. eternal

  3169. life

  3170. and Jesus

  3171. did this

  3172. because it

  3173. was the

  3174. only way

  3175. to save

  3176. us

  3177. there is

  3178. no other

  3179. name under

  3180. heaven by

  3181. which we

  3182. must be

  3183. saved

  3184. in the

  3185. name of

  3186. Jesus

  3187. he received

  3188. the punishment

  3189. that we

  3190. deserve

  3191. for our

  3192. treason

  3193. against

  3194. God

  3195. there was

  3196. no path

  3197. between us

  3198. and God

  3199. no way

  3200. for us

  3201. to return

  3202. to God

  3203. we had

  3204. dishonored

  3205. him

  3206. disavowed

  3207. him

  3208. disbelieved

  3209. him

  3210. we were

  3211. living in

  3212. sinful

  3213. rebellion

  3214. against

  3215. him

  3216. we burned

  3217. we had

  3218. burned

  3219. all the

  3220. bridges

  3221. but God

  3222. sent his

  3223. only son

  3224. Jesus

  3225. to be

  3226. the pathway

  3227. for us

  3228. to be

  3229. restored

  3230. to right

  3231. relationship

  3232. with God

  3233. and because

  3234. of that

  3235. it is our

  3236. missionary

  3237. task

  3238. to point

  3239. people

  3240. to this

  3241. pathway

  3242. that is

  3243. Jesus

  3244. we are

  3245. in this

  3246. sense

  3247. guides

  3248. someone

  3249. tells you

  3250. what your

  3251. calling is

  3252. why you

  3253. live

  3254. what you

  3255. do

  3256. tell them

  3257. I'm a

  3258. guide

  3259. I'm an

  3261. that leads

  3262. people to

  3263. the way

  3265. people to

  3266. the way

  3267. there is

  3272. the Lamb

  3273. of God

  3274. who takes

  3275. away

  3276. the sin

  3279. there is

  3292. ourselves to

  3293. be the

  3319. will raise

  3320. up missionaries

  3321. from our midst

  3322. to go to the

  3323. end of the

  3324. earth

  3327. have no way
