  1. Everybody can grab their seat.

  2. As Jen said, my name is Matt.

  3. I'm one of the, or I'm an intern.

  4. We've changed the title a couple times, so I get mixed up.

  5. But basically, Elder in Training.

  6. I want to just give you a brief update.

  7. Thank you for those who prayed for my last test.

  8. I did pass that, and so I'm moving on to the next one.

  9. Thanks for that.

  10. So I go down the end of August down to Covenant Fellowship Church,

  11. where I'll get drilled by, I think, three pastors for like three hours,

  12. and that's the next test.

  13. So, you know, it's a little nerve-wracking, but at the same time,

  14. it's a good and helpful process to go through.

  15. So pray for me for that.

  16. Once that gets done, then it'll move into like a period where we'll set up

  17. like the ordination service itself.

  18. I don't know if there's any other things to pass at that point.

  19. And I'm not sure what that means as a church for us.

  20. So that's another thing you can be praying for.

  21. Like, I'll move into being an elder, but what does that mean?

  22. I still have a full-time job.

  23. And so we haven't really talked about that.

  24. This is just where God is leading.

  25. And so pray that we as a church and the elders, the leaders,

  26. can decide how God is moving us forward as a church in this area.

  27. That would be great and helpful.

  28. I'm going to pray, and then we'll start out.

  29. Lord, thank you for the opportunity that we have to be here tonight.

  30. In this place, being able to hear your word,

  31. Lord, we pray that you would awaken our hearts,

  32. that you would awaken this city,

  33. even as we are affected by the gospel,

  34. and as you push us out through the power of the Holy Spirit

  35. to affect the world around us.

  36. Lord, we pray that even now you would be preparing the hearts of unbelievers

  37. in our neighborhoods and around where we live.

  38. Lord, may this passage teach us and encourage us

  39. and help us this week as we strive to follow you.

  40. Lord, we ask these things in your holy and precious name.

  41. Amen.

  42. Acts chapter 13 is where we find ourselves this evening.

    Acts 13 chapter mention

  43. We're going to start in verse 13 and go to the end of the chapter.

  44. It's a little long, but it's a story that goes together,

  45. so that's why it is not broken up.

  46. Acts chapter 13, starting in verse 13.

    Acts 13 chapter mention

  47. Now Paul and his companions set sail from Paphos

  48. and came to Perga and Pamphylia,

  49. and John left them and returned to Jerusalem.

  50. I just want to pause there for a minute.

  51. It's not part of the message,

  52. but there's a few parts as we read that I just want to pause for,

  53. and that is John Mark leaves them at this point

  54. and goes back to Jerusalem.

  55. He's traveled with them for over 400 miles,

  56. so he's committed to the mission,

  57. but for some reason we find here that he goes back to Jerusalem,

  58. and we're not sure why Paul talks about it later

  59. as being something that's not really favorable in his eyes.

  60. So there's some animosity,

  61. there's sort of a struggle there.

  62. Again, we don't know why he left.

  63. He just did.

  64. So I wanted to point that out,

  65. but the other thing I wanted to point out

  66. is in verse 13,

  67. starting from here and moving on through the rest of Acts,

  68. it's not Barnabas and the team.

  69. It's not Barnabas and Paul,

  70. but after the last,

  71. the beginning of chapter 13,

  72. when Sean preached it last week,

  73. you saw how Paul got into the face of this magician.

  74. From then on,

  75. there's this transition in leadership,

  76. and now it's Paul and Barnabas.

  77. It's Paul and the team,

  78. and we see that from here on out.

  79. And I bring that out because I think it's helpful,

  80. because up to this point,

  81. Barnabas, the son of encouragement,

  82. has been such a scene as a big part in the church,

  83. and he still is.

  84. But we see that Barnabas had no problem

  85. stepping to the side

  86. when he saw God bringing up someone

  87. that he wanted to use

  88. more in a primary front seat position.

  89. So this transition,

  90. while it's kind of quiet,

  91. it's important for us,

  92. because we can be those who struggle

  93. with position in the church,

  94. with a title,

  95. with what we can do or not do,

  96. or what someone else is doing.

  97. So I would just encourage you with that

  98. to observe Barnabas' humility

  99. as he serves the Lord.

  100. We pick up in verse 14.

  101. But they went on from Perga

  102. and came to Antioch in Pisidia.

  103. And on the Sabbath day,

  104. they went into the synagogue and sat down.

  105. After the reading from the law and the prophets,

  106. the rulers of the synagogue

  107. sent a message to them saying,

  108. Brothers, if you have any word of encouragement

  109. for the people, say it.

  110. So Paul stood up

  111. and motioning with his hands said,

  112. Men of Israel and you who fear God,

  113. listen.

  114. The God of this people Israel

  115. chose our fathers

  116. and made the people great

  117. during their stay in the land of Egypt.

  118. I'm just going to pause there.

  119. This is the last time I'm going to do this.

  120. It's not part of the message.

  121. But another important thing to remember here

  122. is he says that the people were made great

  123. during their stay in Egypt.

  124. They were in slavery in Egypt.

  125. Their people grew, yes,

  126. but they were in slavery and it was hard.

  127. And yet here, Paul says they were made great

  128. during their time in Egypt.

  129. And so, although it may not seem like it,

  130. this is an encouragement

  131. because we're going to find,

  132. if we haven't already,

  133. that blessing and strength

  134. from the Lord

  135. often comes through times of struggle.

  136. And in this case, slavery.

  137. The people were made stronger,

  138. brought closer to God

  139. through their slavery.

  140. We'll continue on.

  141. Verse 17.

  142. The God of this people Israel

  143. chose our fathers

  144. and made the people great

  145. during their stay in the land of Egypt.

  146. And with uplifted arm,

  147. he led them out.

  148. And for about 40 years,

  149. he put up with them in the wilderness.

  150. And after destroying seven nations

  151. in the land of Canaan,

  152. he gave them their land as an inheritance.

  153. All this took about 450 years.

  154. And after that,

  155. he gave them judges

  156. until Samuel the prophet.

  157. Then they asked for a king,

  158. and God gave them Saul,

  159. the son of Kish,

  160. a man of the tribe of Benjamin,

  161. for 40 years.

  162. And when he had removed him,

  163. he raised up David to be their king,

  164. of whom he testified and said,

  165. I have found in David

  166. the son of Jesse,

  167. a man after my heart,

  168. who will do all my will.

  169. Of this man's offspring,

  170. God has brought to Israel a savior,

  171. Jesus, as he's promised.

  172. Before his coming,

  173. John had proclaimed

  174. the baptism of repentance

  175. to all the people of Israel.

  176. And as John was finishing his course,

  177. he said,

  178. What do you suppose that I am?

  179. I am not he.

  180. No, but behold,

  181. after me one is coming,

  182. the sandals of whose feet

  183. I am not worthy to untie.

  184. Brothers,

  185. sons of the family of Abraham,

  186. and those among you who fear God,

  187. to us has been sent the message

  188. of this salvation.

  189. For those who live in Jerusalem

  190. and their rulers,

  191. because they did not recognize him,

  192. nor understand the utterances

  193. of the prophets,

  194. which are read every Sabbath,

  195. fulfilled them by condemning him.

  196. And though they found in him

  197. no guilt worthy of death,

  198. they asked Pilate

  199. to have him executed.

  200. And when they had carried out

  201. all that was written of him,

  202. they took him down from the tree

  203. and laid him in a tomb.

  204. But God raised him from the dead.

  205. And for many days,

  206. he appeared to those

  207. who come up with him

  208. from Galilee to Jerusalem,

  209. who are now his witnesses

  210. to the people.

  211. And we bring you the good news

  212. that what God promised

  213. to the fathers,

  214. this he has fulfilled to us,

  215. their children,

  216. by raising Jesus.

  217. As it is written

  218. in the second psalm,

  219. you are my son,

  220. today I have begotten you.

  221. As for the fact

  222. that he raised him

  223. from the dead,

  224. no more to return

  225. to corruption,

  226. he has spoken in this way,

  227. I will give you the holy

  228. and sure blessings of David.

  229. Therefore, he says also

  230. in another psalm,

  231. I will not let your holy ones

  232. see corruption.

  233. For David,

  234. after he had served

  235. the purpose of God

  236. in his own generation,

  237. fell asleep

  238. and laid with his fathers

  239. and saw corruption.

  240. But he whom God raised up

  241. did not see corruption.

  242. Let it be known to you,

  243. therefore, brothers,

  244. that through this man

  245. forgiveness of sins

  246. is proclaimed to you.

  247. And by him,

  248. every one who believes

  249. is freed

  250. from everything

  251. from which you could not

  252. be freed

  253. by the law of Moses.

  254. Beware, therefore,

  255. lest what is said

  256. in the prophets

  257. should come about.

  258. Look, you scoffers,

  259. be astonished and perish,

  260. for I am doing a work

  261. in your days,

  262. a work that you will not believe

  263. even if one tells it to you.

  264. As they went out,

  265. the people begged

  266. that these things

  267. might be told to them

  268. the next Sabbath.

  269. And after the meeting

  270. of the synagogue broke up,

  271. many Jews

  272. and devout converts

  273. to Judaism

  274. followed Paul and Barnabas,

  275. who, as they spoke with them,

  276. urged them to continue

  277. in the grace of God.

  278. The next Sabbath,

  279. almost the whole city

  280. gathered to hear

  281. the word of the Lord.

  282. But when the Jews

  283. saw the crowds,

  284. they were filled

  285. with jealousy

  286. and began to contradict

  287. what was spoken

  288. by Paul,

  289. reviling him.

  290. And Paul and Barnabas

  291. spoke out boldly,

  292. saying,

  293. It was necessary

  294. that the word of God

  295. be spoken first to you,

  296. since you thrust it aside

  297. and judge yourselves

  298. unworthy of eternal life.

  299. Behold,

  300. we are turning

  301. to the Gentiles,

  302. for so the Lord

  303. has commanded us,

  304. saying,

  305. I have made you

  306. a light for the Gentiles,

  307. that you may bring salvation

  308. to the ends of the earth.

  309. And when the Gentiles

  310. heard this,

  311. they began rejoicing

  312. and glorifying

  313. the word of the Lord.

  314. And as many as were appointed

  315. to eternal life

  316. believed.

  317. And the word of the Lord

  318. was spreading

  319. throughout the whole region.

  320. But the Jews

  321. incited the devout women

  322. of high standing,

  323. and the leading men

  324. of the city

  325. stirred up persecution

  326. against Paul and Barnabas

  327. and drove them

  328. out of their district.

  329. But they shook off

  330. the dust from their feet

  331. against them

  332. and went to Iconium.

  333. And the disciples

  334. were filled with joy

  335. and with the Holy Spirit.

  336. When I was about

  337. eight to ten years old,

  338. I lived in Tennessee.

  339. And one activity

  340. that our church did

  341. was on a regular basis

  342. we would go up

  343. about an hour and a half away

  344. and visit this church,

  345. Mount Pisgah Baptist Church.

  346. It was just a little bit

  347. outside of Knoxville.

  348. But it was a Baptist church,

  349. but a few years before

  350. they had gotten a calling

  351. that they thought

  352. was from the Lord

  353. to set up a printing ministry.

  354. They were going to be

  355. printing Bibles.

  356. They felt that that's

  357. what God called them to do

  358. and they raised money

  359. and they bought

  360. what they needed.

  361. They set up shop

  362. in a bus garage

  363. that was big enough

  364. to hold the equipment.

  365. And we would go up there.

  366. I think it was about

  367. once a month.

  368. We would go up there

  369. and spend a few hours

  370. just putting Bibles together.

  371. So it was pretty cool

  372. as a kid

  373. because you got to see

  374. these pieces of machinery

  375. that are used

  376. to make Bibles.

  377. So it was pretty cool

  378. just to see

  379. like these big cutters

  380. that would just cut

  381. like stacks of Bibles

  382. that were like five high.

  383. And you got to see

  384. the machine

  385. where it would like

  386. slide it through the glue

  387. and put the cover on it.

  388. That was really cool

  389. but what was also neat

  390. about it is

  391. it wasn't hard

  392. to connect

  393. to the mission

  394. that they were on.

  395. They were printing Bibles

  396. that were going to be

  397. sent out

  398. across the world

  399. and they were going to be

  400. doing that

  401. so that they could

  402. spread the gospel

  403. in the way that they felt

  404. God was using them

  405. to do that.

  406. It was a really cool mission.

  407. It was also a hard mission.

  408. We, for us

  409. it wasn't very hard.

  410. We just gave up

  411. some time on a Saturday.

  412. Sometimes it was hot.

  413. It was,

  414. what I remember doing most

  415. was these long tables

  416. and you walked around

  417. with this holder

  418. and you just grabbed

  419. little packs of paper

  420. that were small sections

  421. of the Bible

  422. and you just piled them

  423. on top of each other

  424. walking around the table

  425. and you just do that

  426. over and over again

  427. but they used that

  428. and pass it on

  429. to the next person

  430. who would fold it

  431. and cut it

  432. and glue it together

  433. and it would get

  434. put together

  435. and stacked

  436. and put in boxes

  437. and shipped out.

  438. So it was work

  439. but you saw the mission.

  440. You were able to see

  441. the bigger picture

  442. of what was going on.

  443. It was worthwhile

  444. and you know what?

  445. That's an important mission

  446. and there's,

  447. there's thousands

  448. if not millions

  449. like that.

  450. Not that make Bibles

  451. but that do something

  452. for the mission of God

  453. all over the world.

  454. And so,

  455. our passage tonight,

  456. we're going to be looking

  457. at God's mission.

  458. We're going to be looking

  459. at three points.

  460. One is mission directed.

  461. One is mission denied.

  462. And the last one

  463. is mission driven.

  464. So as you can pick up,

  465. it's all about the mission.

  466. The mission that God

  467. is doing in this passage,

  468. in his church,

  469. in his people.

  470. And so those are the points

  471. but as we move through it,

  472. the question

  473. that it leaves for us

  474. is what is our involvement

  475. in God's mission?

  476. It may not be to go

  477. and help put Bibles together

  478. but if you're a Christian tonight,

  479. God does have something

  480. for you to be doing

  481. that is part of his mission.

  482. So that's what I want you

  483. to be thinking

  484. as we move through this.

  485. Last week we saw how

  486. last week it was Barnabas

  487. and Paul,

  488. how they were set apart.

  489. And we saw how they

  490. and also the church

  491. in Antioch,

  492. they became both part

  493. of the mission, right?

  494. The church laid their hands

  495. on them

  496. and set them apart

  497. and gave them what they needed

  498. to send them out.

  499. And Barnabas and Paul

  500. were on the mission

  501. to go and take that gospel

  502. to several places

  503. being led by the Spirit.

  504. And so that's where

  505. we find ourselves tonight.

  506. They arrived at Perga

  507. and that's where

  508. John Mark leaves them.

  509. I have a map

  510. that we'll put up.

  511. I like pictures

  512. so I can see

  513. as we're moving around.

  514. Is that big enough?

  515. Yeah.

  516. Just to get an idea

  517. of where they started,

  518. so they're Antioch

  519. over here on your right side.

  520. That's Antioch in Syria.

  521. They travel down to

  522. Salamis and Paphos.

  523. That's a message

  524. that was last week.

  525. And then they go up to Perga.

  526. And it's at Perga

  527. where John Mark

  528. decides to leave

  529. for whatever reason.

  530. So he's got a long journey

  531. to go back

  532. way down here

  533. to Jerusalem.

  534. But I showed you that

  535. because I think it's helpful

  536. to see

  537. where they're going

  538. on their mission.

  539. It wasn't an easy mission.

  540. Once John Mark leaves,

  541. they're traveling

  542. 100 more miles

  543. over mountains

  544. to get to Antioch.

  545. Not this Antioch,

  546. but Antioch in Pisidia.

  547. Antioch,

  548. not to be confusing,

  549. but it was a common,

  550. popular city name.

  551. And so that's why

  552. you might hear that.

  553. There's two different locations.

  554. I think there was about

  555. a half a dozen

  556. in that area

  557. at that time.

  558. So they travel there.

  559. Paul and Barnabas

  560. and their team.

  561. I don't know how many more

  562. were with them

  563. at this point.

  564. We don't know

  565. if they visited

  566. the synagogue

  567. in Antioch

  568. that week.

  569. Maybe they were

  570. wearing clothes

  571. that set them apart,

  572. but there was some reason

  573. why the rulers

  574. in the synagogue

  575. knew that they were

  576. not just somebody

  577. visiting the area,

  578. but of a rabbi status

  579. like Paul was.

  580. So after the reading

  581. of a portion

  582. of the law,

  583. a portion of the prophets,

  584. which is what they

  585. traditionally did

  586. during the service,

  587. they extend an invitation

  588. to Paul,

  589. and they say,

  590. hey, if you or anyone

  591. in your team

  592. has a word for the people,

  593. please say it.

  594. So Paul has a message

  595. that God has.

  596. It's probably not

  597. what the rulers

  598. were thinking.

  599. He stands up

  600. and he begins to preach

  601. to these people

  602. who were primarily Jewish.

  603. There were other people

  604. who were converts,

  605. so they were not Jews,

  606. but they believed in God

  607. and they feared

  608. who God was.

  609. So as we move

  610. into verse 17,

  611. what I want us

  612. to see first,

  613. our first point

  614. in our outline

  615. is a mission directed.

  616. It is a mission

  617. directed by God.

  618. If we start in verse 17

  619. and we move on,

  620. we see all the ways

  621. where God does something.

  622. Man is there,

  623. but it's God

  624. the one who leads.

  625. God the people of Israel,

  626. he's the one

  627. who chose the fathers.

  628. He made them great

  629. and then brought them

  630. out of Egypt.

  631. He's the one

  632. that led them

  633. through the wilderness

  634. and destroyed

  635. the seven nations.

  636. He brought them

  637. to the land

  638. that he promised them.

  639. It says here

  640. that it took

  641. about 450 years.

  642. It's basically

  643. a reference

  644. to their 400 years

  645. in slavery

  646. and then their 40 years

  647. in the wilderness

  648. and then about 10 years

  649. where they are doing battle

  650. as God brings them

  651. into the land of Canaan.

  652. After that,

  653. it says God

  654. gave them judges.

  655. Of course,

  656. they weren't happy

  657. and so they wanted a king.

  658. So it says that God

  659. gave them Saul

  660. and after 40 years,

  661. it says God

  662. removed him.

  663. In verse 22,

  664. it's interesting

  665. that it says

  666. God raised up David

  667. to be their king.

  668. So if we compare Saul,

  669. which we know

  670. didn't go well

  671. as a king,

  672. that's just what

  673. the people wanted.

  674. It says that God

  675. gave them Saul

  676. and when it came to David,

  677. God raised up David.

  678. So we have

  679. different language

  680. being used

  681. by two different kings.

  682. David was an ordinary man,

  683. a son of Jesse.

  684. The difference was

  685. he allowed God

  686. to lead his life

  687. and to shape his heart

  688. into being like God's heart

  689. and that's what we see here

  690. said in this passage.

  691. God's mission

  692. was David's mission.

  693. Now,

  694. some are probably

  695. questioning like most,

  696. but didn't David sin.

  697. Absolutely,

  698. in some really big ways.

  699. But notice that

  700. those sins

  701. didn't change

  702. God's testimony

  703. that he said about David.

  704. The reason why

  705. is because David

  706. was repentant.

  707. He repented

  708. of what he did.

  709. It wasn't good.

  710. It was very evil,

  711. bad things.

  712. But that didn't keep

  713. David from seeing

  714. his wrong sin

  715. and he repented

  716. before God.

  717. He didn't dwell in that.

  718. He didn't try

  719. to cover it up

  720. and make a reason.

  721. Well,

  722. he did try to cover it up,

  723. but once he realized

  724. his sin,

  725. the depth of his sin,

  726. then he repented

  727. and he makes it right

  728. and comes back to God.

  729. That's a message

  730. of hope

  731. to anyone out there

  732. who thinks

  733. that their sin

  734. is too large

  735. for God

  736. to do anything

  737. in their life with.

  738. there isn't a sin

  739. that God's grace

  740. and love

  741. can't cover over

  742. and can't forgive

  743. if we are to repent.

  744. Now we come to

  745. the core of the mission

  746. that God is directing

  747. and that is,

  748. as we all know,

  749. the core of the mission

  750. of the gospel

  751. is Jesus Christ.

  752. He's the promised Savior.

  753. Savior.

  754. We see that

  755. Paul jumps

  756. from David,

  757. King David,

  758. all the way to Jesus

  759. in his sermon here.

  760. So,

  761. 1,000 years

  762. he's jumping

  763. in this history summary

  764. that he is doing.

  765. And the connection

  766. he uses

  767. is in verse 23.

  768. Of this man's offspring,

  769. of David's offspring,

  770. God has brought

  771. to Israel

  772. a Savior,

  773. Jesus.

  774. He has promised.

  775. Now,

  776. this connection

  777. from David

  778. to Jesus

  779. would have

  780. been fully accepted

  781. by his Jewish audience

  782. because they knew

  783. the Messiah

  784. would come

  785. from David's line.

  786. Back in Matthew

    Matthew 22 chapter mention

  787. chapter 22,

  788. it says,

  789. now when the Pharisees

  790. were gathered together,

  791. Jesus asked them

  792. a question saying,

  793. what do you think

  794. about the Christ?

  795. Whose son is he?

  796. And they said to him,

  797. the son of David.

  798. So,

  799. they knew

  800. what to expect.

  801. They knew

  802. where the Messiah

  803. was coming from.

  804. Not only fulfilling

  805. the promise

  806. that would come

  807. through David,

  808. but highlighting again

  809. that God

  810. is the director

  811. of what is going on.

  812. God brought

  813. to his people

  814. a Savior.

  815. God made the promise.

  816. God made it happen.

  817. In verse 24,

  818. Paul mentions

  819. John.

  820. John the Baptist

  821. is who he's talking about,

  822. who was sent

  823. to prepare the way

  824. of Christ,

  825. of Jesus.

  826. He was sent

  827. to call people

  828. to repentance

  829. and to be baptized.

  830. It says,

  831. as he is finishing

  832. his course,

  833. that is,

  834. as his life

  835. and ministry

  836. is nearing

  837. an end,

  838. he says,

  839. what do you suppose

  840. that I am?

  841. See,

  842. some thought

  843. that maybe

  844. he was the prophet Elijah

  845. coming from

  846. the wilderness,

  847. and some even

  848. thought that he

  849. could be

  850. the Messiah.

  851. He said,

  852. do you think

  853. that I am

  854. the Savior?

  855. I am not.

  856. And then he adds

  857. to that,

  858. he uses an illustration

  859. of a servant.

  860. A servant

  861. who already

  862. is in a lowly position,

  863. but the lowest thing

  864. that they could do

  865. is wash the feet

  866. of guests coming in.

  867. And to do that,

  868. they would have to

  869. untie their sandals.

  870. So,

  871. so here he's

  872. pointing out

  873. that he is not

  874. even worthy

  875. to serve in a position

  876. that is the lowest

  877. person doing

  878. the lowest job.

  879. Like,

  880. I,

  881. I am not the Savior,

  882. and up next to him,

  883. I don't even stand

  884. worthy to be

  885. the lowest of low,

  886. is what John the Baptist

  887. says.

  888. Paul continues

  889. in verse 26,

  890. and then talk about

  891. salvation

  892. has been sent

  893. to them.

  894. But we notice

  895. that his,

  896. in verse 26,

  897. his greeting changes.

  898. Previously,

  899. he had said

  900. men of Israel.

  901. In verse 26,

  902. he says,

  903. brothers,

  904. sons of the family

  905. of Abraham.

  906. He's,

  907. he's personalizing

  908. this.

  909. He's pointing out

  910. that they are children

  911. of the people

  912. of Israel,

  913. going back to

  914. the ones

  915. that God chose

  916. their fathers.

  917. their fathers

  918. were the very ones

  919. that God chose,

  920. and they are

  921. from that line,

  922. the sons

  923. of the family

  924. of Abraham.

  925. He's making it

  926. more personal.

  927. He's also reminding

  928. them that they are

  929. part of that family.

  930. Not just reminding

  931. them of that,

  932. but having them

  933. realize the weight

  934. that should accompany

  935. that.

  936. The character,

  937. the faith,

  938. the high standing

  939. that embodies

  940. the weight

  941. or the,

  942. the Abrahamic

  943. family name.

  944. Chosen

  945. and set apart

  946. by God.

  947. They should want

  948. to live up

  949. to that,

  950. that weight

  951. and live in a way

  952. that doesn't

  953. detract

  954. or diminish

  955. that heritage

  956. that God

  957. put in place.

  958. Now,

  959. I also don't want

  960. us to miss

  961. our connection

  962. to this

  963. because we also

  964. have been given

  965. a similar heritage.

  966. As children

  967. of God,

  968. we have been

  969. set apart

  970. by God.

  971. And like

  972. verse 26

  973. says,

  974. we have been

  975. sent the message

  976. of this salvation.

  977. So we should

  978. also live

  979. in a way

  980. that Paul

  981. is encouraging

  982. the Jews

  983. to do

  984. as God's people.

  985. Now,

  986. as we move

  987. into verse 27,

  988. Paul starts

  989. to address

  990. the problem

  991. and that brings

  992. us to our

  993. second point.

  994. So we have

  995. mission directed

  996. and then we have

  997. mission denied.

  998. God has promised

  999. salvation

  1000. salvation.

  1001. He has brought

  1002. it to them

  1003. and yet they

  1004. deny it.

  1005. They heard

  1006. the prophets

  1007. read it

  1008. every Sabbath.

  1009. They heard it

  1010. read from the

  1011. scrolls

  1012. and yet they

  1013. still condemned

  1014. him.

  1015. It says

  1016. they did not

  1017. recognize him

  1018. nor understand

  1019. the utterances

  1020. of the prophets

  1021. even though

  1022. they were read

  1023. every week

  1024. in the synagogue

  1025. that they

  1026. went to

  1027. faithfully.

  1028. they still

  1029. failed to

  1030. hear the

  1031. salvation

  1032. message.

  1033. The pointers

  1034. took Christ,

  1035. his death

  1036. and his

  1037. resurrection.

  1038. In recognizing

  1039. Jesus

  1040. and understanding

  1041. the words of the

  1042. prophets,

  1043. they failed

  1044. in both of

  1045. these.

  1046. And yet,

  1047. ironically,

  1048. in their

  1049. failure,

  1050. they fulfilled

  1051. them both.

  1052. Out of their

  1053. ignorance,

  1054. they fulfilled

  1055. what they

  1056. did not

  1057. understand.

  1058. Finding no

  1059. guilt in

  1060. him,

  1061. they executed

  1062. the innocent

  1063. one and

  1064. fulfilled all

  1065. that had been

  1066. written about

  1067. him.

  1068. But God

  1069. raised him

  1070. from the dead

  1071. and he was

  1072. seen for many

  1073. days and by

  1074. many witnesses.

  1075. I think it's

  1076. neat that he

  1077. is seen,

  1078. Jesus,

  1079. after he is

  1080. resurrected,

  1081. he goes to

  1082. his people,

  1083. his disciples,

  1084. close friends.

  1085. And that,

  1086. I think,

  1087. is not only

  1088. to comfort

  1089. them into

  1090. what has

  1091. taken place

  1092. because they

  1093. didn't understand,

  1094. but also,

  1095. like,

  1096. those were the

  1097. people who

  1098. would know,

  1099. who knew

  1100. him the

  1101. most.

  1102. Someone who

  1103. would not

  1104. be tricked

  1105. by it not

  1106. really being

  1107. Jesus or

  1108. him not

  1109. really being

  1110. dead.

  1111. These people

  1112. would know

  1113. a fraud.

  1114. But he

  1115. doesn't just

  1116. go to those

  1117. that Jesus

  1118. knew,

  1119. most

  1120. intimately,

  1121. but he

  1122. also went

  1123. to others

  1124. outside of

  1125. that group,

  1126. appearing to

  1127. 500 people

  1128. at a time

  1129. in one spot.

  1130. So Paul

  1131. lays out

  1132. the good

  1133. news for

  1134. them after

  1135. giving them

  1136. this in

  1137. verses 32

  1138. and 33

  1139. and reminds

  1140. them again

  1141. of their

  1142. heritage.

  1143. He says,

  1144. we bring

  1145. you the

  1146. good news

  1147. that what

  1148. God promised

  1149. to the

  1150. fathers,

  1151. this he

  1152. has fulfilled

  1153. to us,

  1154. their children,

  1155. by raising

  1156. Jesus.

  1157. Here,

  1158. notice he

  1159. says,

  1160. us,

  1161. their children.

  1162. He's including

  1163. with that

  1164. because he

  1165. comes from

  1166. the Jewish

  1167. line as

  1168. well.

  1169. He's also

  1170. leaving out

  1171. the Gentiles

  1172. who are in

  1173. the congregation

  1174. at this

  1175. point.

  1176. He's not

  1177. doing that

  1178. to make

  1179. them feel

  1180. secluded,

  1181. but Paul

  1182. is trying

  1183. really hard

  1184. to win

  1185. over his

  1186. Jewish

  1187. people,

  1188. emphasizing

  1189. that what

  1190. God has

  1191. done

  1192. and how

  1193. the whole

  1194. work of

  1195. Jesus was

  1196. done within

  1197. this Jewish

  1198. people,

  1199. within their

  1200. own people,

  1201. their own

  1202. family.

  1203. Next couple

  1204. verses,

  1205. Paul gives

  1206. some Old

  1207. Testament

  1208. quotations,

  1209. trying to get

  1210. the Jews

  1211. to see

  1212. this promise

  1213. of salvation

  1214. that is

  1215. being fulfilled.

  1216. I'm not

  1217. going to go

  1218. into each

  1219. of these

  1220. quotations

  1221. for sake

  1222. of time,

  1223. but each

  1224. one,

  1225. verse 33,

  1226. taken from

  1227. Psalm,

  1228. you are

  1229. my son,

  1230. today I

  1231. have begotten

  1232. you.

  1233. Verse 34

  1234. is taken

  1235. from Isaiah,

  1236. talking about

  1237. the everlasting

  1238. covenant made

  1239. with David.

  1240. And then

  1241. verse 35,

  1242. a quote

  1243. from Psalm

  1244. 16,

  1245. talking about

  1246. how David

  1247. was human

  1248. and how

  1249. at the end

  1250. of his

  1251. life he

  1252. did die.

  1253. He was

  1254. buried in

  1255. the ground

  1256. and his

  1257. physical body

  1258. did see

  1259. corruption.

  1260. But the

  1261. Holy One,

  1262. speaking of

  1263. Jesus at

  1264. this time,

  1265. whom God

  1266. raised from

  1267. the dead,

  1268. he did not

  1269. see corruption.

  1270. And now

  1271. in verses

  1272. 38 and

  1273. 39,

  1274. we get to

  1275. see the

  1276. salvation

  1277. point of

  1278. Paul's

  1279. message.

  1280. And he

  1281. begins us

  1282. with a

  1283. little bit

  1284. more

  1285. authoritative

  1286. tone.

  1287. Good thing

  1288. I wasn't

  1289. speaking then.

  1290. Let it

  1291. be known

  1292. to you

  1293. therefore,

  1294. brothers,

  1295. that through

  1296. this man,

  1297. through

  1298. Jesus Christ,

  1299. the one

  1300. that you

  1301. crucified,

  1302. the one

  1303. you didn't

  1304. believe in,

  1305. through him

  1306. has come

  1307. forgiveness

  1308. of sins

  1309. and is

  1310. being

  1311. proclaimed

  1312. to you.

  1313. And then

  1314. when he

  1315. adds

  1316. verse 39,

  1317. it's just

  1318. beautiful.

  1319. He says,

  1320. and by

  1321. him,

  1322. everyone

  1323. who believes

  1324. is freed

  1325. from everything

  1326. from which

  1327. you could

  1328. not be

  1329. freed by

  1330. the law

  1331. of Moses.

  1332. Jesus.

  1333. This word

  1334. freed,

  1335. translated

  1336. better from

  1337. the Greek,

  1338. is actually

  1339. the word

  1340. justified.

  1341. And you

  1342. can see how

  1343. they can

  1344. mean the

  1345. same thing,

  1346. but I

  1347. think justified

  1348. is just

  1349. stronger.

  1350. and by

  1351. him,

  1352. belief in

  1353. Jesus,

  1354. everyone

  1355. who believes

  1356. is justified

  1357. from everything

  1358. from which

  1359. you could

  1360. not be

  1361. justified

  1362. by the

  1363. law of

  1364. Moses.

  1365. The Jews

  1366. were all

  1367. about the

  1368. law of

  1369. Moses.

  1370. They lived

  1371. by this

  1372. law.

  1373. They

  1374. added to

  1375. this

  1376. law.

  1377. They

  1378. condemned

  1379. people

  1380. with this

  1381. law.

  1382. And Paul

  1383. is saying

  1384. there is

  1385. no

  1386. justification

  1387. from

  1388. this

  1389. law.

  1390. It's

  1391. not like

  1392. some sins

  1393. could be

  1394. removed

  1395. by the

  1396. law.

  1397. No

  1398. sins

  1399. can be

  1400. removed

  1401. by the

  1402. law.

  1403. No

  1404. freedom

  1405. comes

  1406. from

  1407. the

  1408. law.

  1409. It

  1410. only

  1411. brings

  1412. demands

  1413. and

  1414. requirements

  1415. that we

  1416. break.

  1417. And there

  1418. is no

  1419. freedom.

  1420. There

  1421. is only

  1422. the

  1423. pointing

  1424. out of

  1425. sin

  1426. and there's

  1427. guilt.

  1428. It is

  1429. only through

  1430. Jesus

  1431. Christ.

  1432. It's

  1433. his work

  1434. of

  1435. salvation.

  1436. It's

  1437. our

  1438. belief

  1439. in that

  1440. work

  1441. where we

  1442. find

  1443. freedom,

  1444. where we

  1445. find

  1446. justification.

  1447. Paul

  1448. ends

  1449. his

  1450. message

  1451. in

  1452. verses

  1453. 40

  1454. and

  1455. 41.

  1456. But as

  1457. he does,

  1458. he gives

  1459. a warning.

  1460. Again,

  1461. using an

  1462. Old Testament

  1463. quotation,

  1464. this time

  1465. from Habakkuk

    Habakkuk 1 chapter mention

  1466. chapter 1.

  1467. The

  1468. prophet

  1469. Habakkuk

  1470. is told

  1471. to prophesy

  1472. to the

  1473. Israelites

  1474. that God

  1475. will be

  1476. using the

  1477. Chaldeans

  1478. to come

  1479. in and

  1480. utterly

  1481. destroy

  1482. them.

  1483. the

  1484. problem

  1485. is

  1486. not a

  1487. single

  1488. one

  1489. believed

  1490. it

  1491. until

  1492. it

  1493. actually

  1494. happened.

  1495. And so

  1496. in

  1497. Paul's

  1498. warning,

  1499. he's

  1500. asking

  1501. the

  1502. hearers

  1503. if

  1504. such

  1505. unbelief

  1506. is

  1507. about

  1508. to

  1509. repeat

  1510. itself.

  1511. And

  1512. then

  1513. Paul

  1514. ends

  1515. his

  1516. message.

  1517. And

  1518. in

  1519. verse

  1520. 42,

  1521. we see

  1522. that

  1523. people

  1524. are

  1525. begging

  1526. to

  1527. hear

  1528. more.

  1529. The

  1530. meeting

  1531. broke

  1532. up

  1533. and

  1534. there

  1535. are

  1536. Jews

  1537. and

  1538. Jewish

  1539. converts

  1540. that

  1541. want

  1542. to

  1543. hear

  1544. more.

  1545. Verse

  1546. 43

  1547. says

  1548. that

  1549. they

  1550. followed

  1551. Paul

  1552. and

  1553. Barnabas.

  1554. They

  1555. spoke

  1556. to

  1557. them

  1558. and

  1559. Paul

  1560. and

  1561. Barnabas

  1562. are

  1563. encouraging

  1564. them,

  1565. persuading

  1566. them,

  1567. it says,

  1568. to continue

  1569. in the

  1570. grace

  1571. of God.

  1572. This

  1573. is

  1574. talking

  1575. about

  1576. the

  1577. message

  1578. of

  1579. salvation

  1580. that

  1581. they've

  1582. just

  1583. been

  1584. given.

  1585. Paul

  1586. is

  1587. encouraging

  1588. them,

  1589. listen,

  1590. you've

  1591. just

  1592. been

  1593. giving

  1594. this,

  1595. go

  1596. with

  1597. that,

  1598. don't

  1599. go

  1600. back

  1601. to

  1602. what

  1603. you

  1604. had

  1605. before,

  1606. but

  1607. continue

  1608. on.

  1609. So as

  1610. you can

  1611. imagine,

  1612. there is

  1613. no doubt

  1614. a lot

  1615. of talk

  1616. in the

  1617. city

  1618. that

  1619. week.

  1620. There

  1621. was a

  1622. message

  1623. that

  1624. was

  1625. given

  1626. in the

  1627. synagogue

  1628. that

  1629. had

  1630. never

  1631. been

  1632. heard

  1633. before,

  1634. and

  1635. many

  1636. people

  1637. wanted

  1638. to

  1639. hear

  1640. more.

  1641. So

  1642. on

  1643. the

  1644. next

  1645. Sabbath,

  1646. Luke

  1647. says

  1648. that

  1649. almost

  1650. the

  1651. whole

  1652. city

  1653. came

  1654. out

  1655. to

  1656. hear

  1657. the

  1658. word

  1659. of

  1660. the

  1661. Lord.

  1662. Can you

  1663. imagine

  1664. a city

  1665. where

  1666. people,

  1667. whether

  1668. believers

  1669. or

  1670. unbelievers,

  1671. were excited

  1672. to come

  1673. together

  1674. and hear

  1675. the word

  1676. of the

  1677. Lord?

  1678. It

  1679. would

  1680. really

  1681. be a

  1682. great

  1683. revival

  1684. service

  1685. to be

  1686. part

  1687. of.

  1688. But

  1689. from

  1690. this

  1691. passage,

  1692. we

  1693. know

  1694. that

  1695. there

  1696. is

  1697. trouble

  1698. brewing.

  1699. Verse

  1700. 45,

  1701. when

  1702. the Jews

  1703. saw

  1704. the

  1705. crowds,

  1706. they

  1707. were

  1708. filled

  1709. with

  1710. jealousy

  1711. and

  1712. began

  1713. to

  1714. contradict

  1715. what

  1716. was

  1717. spoken

  1718. by

  1719. Paul.

  1720. Paul

  1721. is

  1722. preaching

  1723. the

  1724. gospel

  1725. of

  1726. Jesus

  1727. Christ.

  1728. He's

  1729. talking

  1730. about

  1731. what

  1732. God

  1733. has

  1734. done,

  1735. what

  1736. he

  1737. has

  1738. promised,

  1739. and

  1740. the

  1741. work

  1742. that

  1743. he

  1744. is

  1745. doing.

  1746. So

  1747. when

  1748. they

  1749. contradict

  1750. Paul,

  1751. they're

  1752. contradicting

  1753. God.

  1754. When

  1755. they

  1756. revile

  1757. against

  1758. him,

  1759. they're

  1760. actually

  1761. doing

  1762. it

  1763. against

  1764. God.

  1765. If

  1766. we

  1767. think

  1768. about

  1769. that,

  1770. how

  1771. crazy

  1772. and

  1773. futile

  1774. that

  1775. is.

  1776. God's

  1777. people

  1778. that

  1779. he

  1780. called

  1781. are

  1782. now

  1783. contradicting

  1784. the

  1785. mission

  1786. that

  1787. he

  1788. is

  1789. doing,

  1790. the

  1791. work

  1792. that

  1793. he

  1794. is

  1795. doing

  1796. to

  1797. save

  1798. them.

  1799. And

  1800. as

  1801. the

  1802. Jews

  1803. start

  1804. to

  1805. argue

  1806. here

  1807. in

  1808. this

  1809. passage

  1810. and

  1811. they're

  1812. contradicting

  1813. Paul,

  1814. verse

  1815. 46

  1816. says

  1817. that

  1818. Paul

  1819. and

  1820. Barnabas

  1821. had

  1822. to

  1823. get

  1824. loud.

  1825. Right?

  1826. Before

  1827. they

  1828. lost

  1829. their

  1830. chance

  1831. to

  1832. say

  1833. any

  1834. more

  1835. to

  1836. this

  1837. crowd

  1838. as

  1839. they

  1840. get

  1841. louder,

  1842. they

  1843. had

  1844. something

  1845. else

  1846. that

  1847. they

  1848. still

  1849. needed

  1850. to

  1851. say.

  1852. It

  1853. was

  1854. another

  1855. important

  1856. detail

  1857. that

  1858. they

  1859. had

  1860. to

  1861. pass

  1862. on,

  1863. and

  1864. it

  1865. was

  1866. this.

  1867. They

  1868. said,

  1869. it

  1870. was

  1871. necessary

  1872. that

  1873. the

  1874. word

  1875. of

  1876. God

  1877. be

  1878. spoken

  1879. to

  1880. you

  1881. first.

  1882. You

  1883. Jewish

  1884. people,

  1885. but

  1886. since

  1887. you

  1888. have

  1889. thrusted

  1890. aside

  1891. and

  1892. you

  1893. judge

  1894. yourselves

  1895. unworthy

  1896. of

  1897. eternal

  1898. life,

  1899. that

  1900. is,

  1901. you

  1902. are

  1903. pushing

  1904. away

  1905. the

  1906. message

  1907. of

  1908. salvation,

  1909. and

  1910. by that

  1911. act

  1912. you

  1913. are

  1914. pronouncing

  1915. that

  1916. the

  1917. final

  1918. verdict

  1919. for

  1920. yourself

  1921. is

  1922. that

  1923. you're

  1924. not

  1925. worthy

  1926. of

  1927. saving,

  1928. you're

  1929. not

  1930. worthy

  1931. of

  1932. eternal

  1933. life.

  1934. And

  1935. Paul

  1936. says

  1937. for

  1938. that

  1939. reason

  1940. we're

  1941. turning

  1942. to

  1943. the

  1944. Gentiles.

  1945. And

  1946. that

  1947. brings

  1948. us

  1949. to

  1950. our

  1951. last

  1952. point,

  1953. which

  1954. is

  1955. a

  1956. mission

  1957. driven.

  1958. It

  1959. is

  1960. driven

  1961. forward

  1962. even

  1963. through

  1964. denial.

  1965. Paul

  1966. says

  1967. that

  1968. God

  1969. told

  1970. us

  1971. to

  1972. move

  1973. on

  1974. from

  1975. you

  1976. to

  1977. the

  1978. Gentiles.

  1979. This

  1980. was

  1981. God's

  1982. plan

  1983. all

  1984. along.

  1985. He

  1986. quotes

  1987. Isaiah

  1988. 49

  1989. reminding

  1990. them

  1991. that

  1992. God's

  1993. mission

  1994. was

  1995. always

  1996. to

  1997. start

  1998. with

  1999. the

  2000. Jews.

  2001. To

  2002. make

  2003. them

  2004. a

  2005. light,

  2006. an

  2007. example,

  2008. a

  2009. beacon

  2010. of

  2011. hope

  2012. to

  2013. the

  2014. world.

  2015. To

  2016. bring

  2017. salvation

  2018. to

  2019. the

  2020. world.

  2021. Not

  2022. keep

  2023. salvation

  2024. just

  2025. to

  2026. the

  2027. Jews

  2028. themselves.

  2029. And

  2030. when the

  2031. Gentiles

  2032. heard

  2033. this

  2034. from

  2035. Paul

  2036. and

  2037. from

  2038. Barnabas,

  2039. as you

  2040. can imagine,

  2041. they're

  2042. filled

  2043. with joy.

  2044. Right?

  2045. Excitement.

  2046. There's

  2047. this gospel

  2048. party going

  2049. on as

  2050. they glorified

  2051. the word

  2052. of the

  2053. Lord as

  2054. salvation is

  2055. being given

  2056. to them.

  2057. People,

  2058. Gentile

  2059. people,

  2060. like us,

  2061. who were

  2062. once outside,

  2063. are now

  2064. brought

  2065. inside.

  2066. And people

  2067. got saved.

  2068. And the

  2069. gospel is

  2070. growing through

  2071. the region.

  2072. Through the region.

  2073. brothers and

  2074. sisters,

  2075. it is a

  2076. glorious

  2077. thing

  2078. when

  2079. cold,

  2080. dead

  2081. hearts

  2082. are brought

  2083. to life

  2084. by the

  2085. word of

  2086. God.

  2087. And people

  2088. realize

  2089. that God's

  2090. mission

  2091. included

  2092. their

  2093. salvation.

  2094. When the

  2095. God of the

  2096. universe

  2097. shows up

  2098. and touches

  2099. a life

  2100. and gives

  2101. it a

  2102. purpose

  2103. that spans

  2104. eternity,

  2105. that

  2106. experience

  2107. cannot be

  2108. matched by

  2109. anything else.

  2110. And that's

  2111. what happened

  2112. here for

  2113. the non-Jewish

  2114. believers.

  2115. And that's

  2116. what's happened

  2117. here to

  2118. all of us

  2119. outside of

  2120. the Jewish

  2121. people.

  2122. So be

  2123. encouraged

  2124. today.

  2125. Now look,

  2126. Luke could

  2127. have ended

  2128. this passage

  2129. with verse

  2130. 49,

  2131. but he

  2132. didn't.

  2133. And I

  2134. think that

  2135. allows us

  2136. to see

  2137. something

  2138. important.

  2139. If you're

  2140. a Christian

  2141. this morning,

  2142. if you're

  2143. doing God's

  2144. work,

  2145. people are

  2146. being

  2147. changed

  2148. and saved

  2149. and people

  2150. are coming

  2151. to church

  2152. and their

  2153. lives are

  2154. being affected

  2155. by the

  2156. Lord,

  2157. there will

  2158. be persecution.

  2159. persecution.

  2160. It's safe

  2161. to say

  2162. that if

  2163. your life

  2164. is void

  2165. of persecution,

  2166. that you

  2167. are not

  2168. part of

  2169. God's

  2170. mission

  2171. very strongly.

  2172. And I

  2173. know that

  2174. sounds

  2175. rough.

  2176. If your

  2177. life is

  2178. void of

  2179. persecution,

  2180. you're probably

  2181. not very

  2182. serious in

  2183. your mission

  2184. with God.

  2185. God's

  2186. love.

  2187. I

  2188. say that

  2189. because I

  2190. want to be

  2191. honest with

  2192. you and I

  2193. want you to

  2194. be honest

  2195. with yourself

  2196. because we

  2197. know that

  2198. Satan is

  2199. alive and

  2200. well.

  2201. And we

  2202. know that

  2203. if we're

  2204. doing things

  2205. for the

  2206. Lord,

  2207. Satan will

  2208. want to

  2209. knock us

  2210. off.

  2211. So if

  2212. persecution

  2213. and trials

  2214. are coming

  2215. at you,

  2216. then you

  2217. can rest

  2218. assured that

  2219. Satan is

  2220. not happy

  2221. with what

  2222. you're doing.

  2223. But the

  2224. other side

  2225. of that

  2226. is if

  2227. you are

  2228. attending

  2229. church once

  2230. a week,

  2231. like these

  2232. Jewish rulers,

  2233. and your

  2234. life comes

  2235. with no

  2236. persecution,

  2237. then you

  2238. should question

  2239. what are you

  2240. doing for

  2241. God?

  2242. Because Satan

  2243. is not

  2244. afraid of

  2245. you.

  2246. Satan is

  2247. not afraid

  2248. of any

  2249. work that

  2250. you're doing,

  2251. most likely

  2252. because you're

  2253. not doing

  2254. any work.

  2255. So I

  2256. know that

  2257. comes out

  2258. strong,

  2259. but I

  2260. want to

  2261. encourage you

  2262. to be

  2263. about the

  2264. battle against

  2265. Satan and

  2266. the mission

  2267. for God.

  2268. Verse 50

  2269. says that

  2270. the Jews,

  2271. those who

  2272. were supposed

  2273. to know

  2274. and love

  2275. and follow

  2276. God,

  2277. they were

  2278. jealous,

  2279. they were

  2280. angry,

  2281. they were

  2282. stirred up

  2283. by these

  2284. crowds that

  2285. were brought,

  2286. not because

  2287. of them,

  2288. but because

  2289. of the

  2290. word of

  2291. the Lord.

  2292. And they

  2293. brought

  2294. persecution

  2295. against

  2296. Paul and

  2297. Barnabas,

  2298. and they

  2299. drove them

  2300. out of

  2301. the city.

  2302. Most

  2303. likely,

  2304. this

  2305. kicking

  2306. them

  2307. out of

  2308. the city

  2309. was not

  2310. a painless

  2311. ordeal.

  2312. Several

  2313. commentators

  2314. think that

  2315. there was a

  2316. beating involved

  2317. with kicking

  2318. them out.

  2319. And so,

  2320. again,

  2321. I remind us

  2322. that Paul

  2323. and Barnabas

  2324. were not

  2325. wondering,

  2326. why am I

  2327. getting beat

  2328. because I'm

  2329. doing what

  2330. God wants

  2331. me to do?

  2332. They understand

  2333. why they're

  2334. getting beat

  2335. because the

  2336. word of

  2337. the Lord

  2338. is going

  2339. out and

  2340. Satan and

  2341. unbelievers

  2342. are fighting

  2343. against that.

  2344. The reminder

  2345. points us

  2346. back to

  2347. Jesus Christ.

  2348. We know

  2349. that Jesus

  2350. lived a

  2351. perfect life.

  2352. We also

  2353. know that

  2354. his message

  2355. was rejected.

  2356. He was

  2357. persecuted

  2358. and he

  2359. was crucified.

  2360. If he,

  2361. our Savior,

  2362. went through

  2363. that,

  2364. then why

  2365. would not

  2366. us,

  2367. his followers,

  2368. go through

  2369. something similar?

  2370. A couple

  2371. verses just

  2372. to remind

  2373. us.

  2374. John

    John 15:18

  2375. chapter 15

  2376. verse 18.

  2377. If the

  2378. world hates

  2379. you,

  2380. keep in

  2381. mind that

  2382. it hated

  2383. me first.

  2384. Speaking of

  2385. Jesus.

  2386. 2 Timothy

  2387. 3.12

  2388. In fact,

  2389. everyone who

  2390. wants to

  2391. live a godly

  2392. life in

  2393. Christ Jesus

  2394. will be

  2395. persecuted.

  2396. That's just

  2397. what comes

  2398. with a

  2399. Christian's

  2400. life.

  2401. We're

  2402. commanded to

  2403. share the

  2404. gospel.

  2405. Our job

  2406. is not to

  2407. take the

  2408. gospel and

  2409. change it

  2410. to make

  2411. it pretty

  2412. or soft,

  2413. more acceptable

  2414. to an

  2415. unbelieving

  2416. world.

  2417. They are

  2418. going to

  2419. fight against

  2420. it.

  2421. Many will

  2422. hate it.

  2423. But it's

  2424. the message

  2425. that God

  2426. uses to

  2427. save his

  2428. people.

  2429. It's the

  2430. same message

  2431. that if

  2432. you were

  2433. saved here

  2434. tonight,

  2435. was used

  2436. to bring

  2437. you to

  2438. salvation.

  2439. Verse 51

  2440. says,

  2441. they shook

  2442. off the

  2443. dust from

  2444. their feet

  2445. against them.

  2446. That is to

  2447. say,

  2448. I tried to

  2449. tell you,

  2450. and now the

  2451. weight of

  2452. unbelief and

  2453. the judgment

  2454. from that is

  2455. on your

  2456. head.

  2457. And then

  2458. they went

  2459. to Iconium.

  2460. And it

  2461. says the

  2462. disciples were

  2463. encouraged,

  2464. filled with

  2465. happiness.

  2466. They were

  2467. filled with

  2468. the Holy

  2469. Spirit.

  2470. The disciples

  2471. they're referring

  2472. to, those

  2473. who were

  2474. left there

  2475. in Antioch,

  2476. they weren't

  2477. referring to

  2478. Paul and

  2479. Barnabas.

  2480. Those who

  2481. were left

  2482. there, they

  2483. were filled

  2484. with the

  2485. Holy Spirit

  2486. to continue

  2487. the mission.

  2488. Remember,

  2489. Jesus, when

  2490. he was going

  2491. back to

  2492. heaven, said

  2493. he was sending

  2494. us the

  2495. Holy Spirit

  2496. to live

  2497. in us for

  2498. the purpose

  2499. of God's

  2500. mission, to

  2501. encourage us,

  2502. to strengthen

  2503. us, to

  2504. help us, to

  2505. drive us

  2506. forward in

  2507. God's mission.

  2508. Now I know

  2509. in this room

  2510. tonight there

  2511. are two

  2512. groups of

  2513. people.

  2514. There are

  2515. those who

  2516. are saved

  2517. and those

  2518. who are

  2519. not.

  2520. And so

  2521. like Paul

  2522. was preaching

  2523. the gospel

  2524. to the people

  2525. in Antioch,

  2526. I'm

  2527. presenting

  2528. to you

  2529. the gospel

  2530. from God's

  2531. word, not

  2532. man's words, not

  2533. my word, but

  2534. God's word.

  2535. God has made

  2536. salvation available

  2537. to you.

  2538. If you don't

  2539. know that

  2540. salvation, if

  2541. you have not

  2542. put your trust

  2543. in Jesus,

  2544. you can't

  2545. know God,

  2546. you can't be

  2547. on God's

  2548. mission if

  2549. there is no

  2550. belief in

  2551. his son.

  2552. And so

  2553. if you

  2554. haven't trusted

  2555. Jesus, I

  2556. would urge

  2557. you not

  2558. to continue

  2559. like the

  2560. Jews in

  2561. unbelief and

  2562. risk and

  2563. eternity

  2564. separated from

  2565. God.

  2566. And so I

  2567. would encourage

  2568. you to come

  2569. talk to me

  2570. after the

  2571. service.

  2572. Come talk

  2573. to someone

  2574. next to

  2575. you.

  2576. Reach out

  2577. to someone.

  2578. For those

  2579. who already

  2580. know and

  2581. have put

  2582. their belief

  2583. in Jesus,

  2584. let me ask

  2585. you something

  2586. this evening.

  2587. Are you

  2588. on God's

  2589. mission or

  2590. your own

  2591. mission?

  2592. Are you a

  2593. religious person

  2594. going to church

  2595. every week and

  2596. you hear the

  2597. word and

  2598. that's your

  2599. part?

  2600. And has

  2601. God moved

  2602. on from you

  2603. because you

  2604. are not like

  2605. Paul and

  2606. Barnabas and

  2607. the people who

  2608. are being

  2609. saved?

  2610. You're not

  2611. desiring to

  2612. be part of

  2613. the mission

  2614. to allow

  2615. the Holy

  2616. Spirit to

  2617. work?

  2618. Is there

  2619. no involvement

  2620. in what God

  2621. wants you to

  2622. be doing?

  2623. Maybe it's

  2624. because of a

  2625. stubborn heart

  2626. or unwillingness

  2627. to do what

  2628. God wants.

  2629. Maybe it's

  2630. stop clinging

  2631. to something

  2632. that God's

  2633. calling you

  2634. to let go.

  2635. So there's

  2636. this battle.

  2637. I urge you

  2638. to let those

  2639. things go

  2640. and let God

  2641. be your

  2642. director

  2643. tonight.

  2644. A couple

  2645. practical

  2646. aspects of

  2647. this passage

  2648. and some

  2649. of you I

  2650. know do

  2651. this very

  2652. well.

  2653. So I want

  2654. to encourage

  2655. you to keep

  2656. doing those

  2657. things.

  2658. things.

  2659. But if

  2660. you're a

  2661. new Christian

  2662. or maybe

  2663. you've been

  2664. a Christian

  2665. for a few

  2666. years and

  2667. you find

  2668. yourself not

  2669. you just feel

  2670. not connected

  2671. to God's

  2672. mission.

  2673. You don't

  2674. know what

  2675. God is

  2676. doing in

  2677. your life.

  2678. Sometimes you

  2679. feel like you're

  2680. moving backwards

  2681. and not forward.

  2682. a couple

  2683. things that

  2684. you can be

  2685. doing.

  2686. And these

  2687. are basic

  2688. things.

  2689. I say basic

  2690. things because

  2691. we never

  2692. move away

  2693. from them.

  2694. And that

  2695. is Bible

  2696. reading.

  2697. We can't

  2698. know God

  2699. outside of

  2700. his word.

  2701. So read

  2702. the Bible.

  2703. We know

  2704. that prayer

  2705. has power.

  2706. So we need

  2707. to be about

  2708. praying to

  2709. our God.

  2710. So make

  2711. prayer a

  2712. habit.

  2713. Make Bible

  2714. reading a

  2715. habit.

  2716. And as we

  2717. do those

  2718. things, like

  2719. David, we

  2720. allow God's

  2721. will to

  2722. become our

  2723. will, we

  2724. won't miss

  2725. the mission

  2726. that he has

  2727. for us.

  2728. Last night

  2729. after I put

  2730. Juliet to

  2731. bed, it's

  2732. part of our

  2733. nighttime

  2734. routine where

  2735. I sit next

  2736. to her bed

  2737. and I just

  2738. do work.

  2739. I read on

  2740. my phone or

  2741. I type on

  2742. the computer

  2743. and she

  2744. lays in

  2745. bed and

  2746. she likes

  2747. to fall

  2748. asleep that

  2749. way.

  2750. So I

  2751. usually get

  2752. about 10-15

  2753. minutes where

  2754. she's fallen

  2755. asleep.

  2756. And as I

  2757. did, I was

  2758. thinking about

  2759. Mount Pisgah

  2760. where I

  2761. helped make

  2762. Bibles.

  2763. And so I was

  2764. just curious and

  2765. I looked it

  2766. up and it

  2767. was pretty cool

  2768. because they're

  2769. still there,

  2770. right?

  2771. They've actually

  2772. grown bigger.

  2773. So now, 40

  2774. years later,

  2775. they're still

  2776. printing Bibles.

  2777. I think in

  2778. over 16

  2779. different languages,

  2780. they're still

  2781. sending out

  2782. Bibles all

  2783. over the

  2784. world.

  2785. So I'm just

  2786. thinking about

  2787. that mission

  2788. and how they're

  2789. continuing on.

  2790. As people of

  2791. God, let us

  2792. connect to the

  2793. mission that God

  2794. is directing.

  2795. Let us not

  2796. deny our

  2797. responsibility in

  2798. that mission

  2799. mission and

  2800. let us allow

  2801. the Holy Spirit

  2802. to drive us

  2803. forward in

  2804. all that God

  2805. has for us.

  2806. Let's close

  2807. in prayer.

  2808. Lord God,

  2809. again, we

  2810. thank you for

  2811. your word and

  2812. for these

  2813. missionary

  2814. stories.

  2815. about how

  2816. you are

  2817. doing a

  2818. work.

  2819. Lord, help

  2820. us not to

  2821. just get

  2822. comfortable in

  2823. our life and

  2824. deny what you

  2825. are doing and

  2826. disconnect from

  2827. the one who

  2828. has given us

  2829. salvation.

  2830. God, help us

  2831. move in each

  2832. person's life,

  2833. knowing that each

  2834. person's situation

  2835. is different and

  2836. what you call

  2837. from them for

  2838. them to do,

  2839. is different.

  2840. Lord, work in

  2841. their lives and

  2842. their hearts.

  2843. Help them not

  2844. to deny

  2845. what you are

  2846. doing.

  2847. Lord, help

  2848. them to follow

  2849. the Spirit.

  2850. Help us to

  2851. follow the Spirit.

  2852. Help us to

  2853. seek you in

  2854. your word.

  2855. And God, may

  2856. we be driven

  2857. forward in

  2858. your mission

  2859. through the

  2860. work of the

  2861. Holy Spirit.

  2862. Lord, in your

  2863. name we pray.

  2864. Amen.
